Comparing Magic In The Eye Of The World And The Magician
Magic or unexplained science, some would say, is the human brain s way of understanding what
appears impossible. Magic is also a way one can feel special because magic allows things to
appear out of thin air or happen instantly and everyone wishes this were true. Everyone person who
has an encounter with magic, deals with magic in different ways, yet there can be similarities.
Similarities can be seen in the novels, The Magicians by Lev Grossman, The Eye of the World
by Robert Jordan, and The Magician by Raymond E. Feist. Each novel has a main character who
becomes deeply involved with magic, but with different end games. When dealing with magic, one
must learn the significance of it which in turn helps the wielder of magic or reader feel as if the
impossible has become possible.
Within the novel, The Magician Pug doesn t understand the significance of magic and this cause
him to struggle while learning his craft. While Pug is talking with Father Tully he says, Each time I
try one of the simple spells Kulgan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dear Princess Carline learned the true value of magic when Pug used it to save her life. She
stepped closer to him and placed a hand on his arm. Thank you, (Feist, 54). The Princess Carline
had not felt guilty when she had left Pug alone with the trolls who Pug had drowned using
magic, but when he came back to her in one piece, Pug could tell the Princess knew she was in
the wrong. The Princess, before Pug used magic to kill the trolls, disregarded magic, even hated
it some might say, but through Pug using it to save her life instead of kill her with it, allowed
the Princess to see why magic was so valued in her kingdom. Pug learned to value magic in a
different way, in a different world to be more precise and the way he valued magic is different than

Case Study Of Barclays
3.6.2Barclays Case study
3.6.2.1Barclays: Historical Perspective on the British giant
Throughout the history of multinational banking, British banks have retained large market
shares in a variety of countries over long periods of time (Jones, 1990 and Wilkins, 1970). As
outlined at the initial stage of this dissertation, CSR as a concept appeared for the first time in
the 1950s (Bowen, 1953). On that basis, this sub section will focus on a historical perspective of
Barclays from the post war period onwards. The main banking strategies of the post war period
(1945 1980) emphasized geographical diversification. Barclays established branches overseas on
the grounds that British multinational manufacturers would need the dynamic assistance of British
banks in the post war world. By establishing foreign branches, Barclays signalled to its clients that
it was willing to guarantee all its global assets for local activities. Moreover, several banks
established development corporations, with the intention of providing credit facilities in developing
economies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Barclays shifted the group s international ambitions at that time. It had the intention to
become a major global bank, by moving away from its legacy in retail banking, but offering
Foreign Exchange (FX), broking, corporate finance and investment management services
worldwide. In the last decade of the 20th century Barclays developed its two pillar strategy of
international expansion: expansion in the markets of developed economies and emphasis on
investment, rather than on retail banking. Regarding the Asian market, Barclays was devoted to the
narrow product service offering. In Singapore it was offering investment banking services solely,
while in Australia it was engaged in lending to small and medium sized

Limitations Of Rapid Diagnostics
Timely administration of appropriate antibiotics is essential for decreasing hospital mortality in
patients with sepsis12. Kumar et al. demonstrated that with each hour delay, there is a 7.6%
decrease in survival. Moreover, delaying appropriate antibiotics can increase healthcare costs, length
of stay and antimicrobial resistance13, 14. Traditional methods of microbial identification have
time concerns. Most laboratories take 48 72 hours to determine microorganisms susceptibility
testing10, 15. Kerremans et al. did a prospective randomized controlled trial over two years period

methods15. The intervention group had 20 hours mean reduction for... Show more content on

In another study by the same author, compared a historical control group with MALDI TOF MS
coupled with antimicrobial stewardship and showed mortality benefits (21% vs 8.9%; p = 0.01)19.
The later study overcame some of the limitations of the previous study and included only patients
with antibiotic resistance gram negative bacteremia with sufficient sample size. Selecting the most
appropriate and cost effective rapid diagnostic testing is somehow challenging given the wide range
of commercially available diagnostic tools. Some of these tools require labor intensive clinical
laboratories work with high complexity10. For gram negative bacteremia, two tools have potential
clinical benefits, Verigene gram negative blood culture (BC GN) and FilmArray blood culture
identification (BCID) given their ability to detect resistance patterns in certain microorganisms and
have a short turnaround time after a positive blood culture. A study by MacVane S et al. examined
the usefulness of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) coupled with BCID versus
conventional organism identification coupled with ASP or conventional organism identification
(controls) alone20. Although microorganism identification was shorter in the BCID group (17
hours vs 54 to 57 hours; p 0.001), there was no

Breakfast of Champions Essay
Breakfast of Champions When one hears the phrase Breakfast of Champions, he envisions a
grinning picture of Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan slam dunking, or Dale Earnhardt in a racecar on
a box of Wheaties, a popular breakfast cereal. A few avid Saturday Night Live fans might recall a
skit performed by James Belushi. In the skit, Belushi s Breakfastof Championswas beer, cigarettes,
and donuts. Neither of these examples are the subject of Kurt Vonnegut s Breakfast of Champions
or Good Bye Blue Morning. A Breakfast of Champions is actually a martini.
Breakfast of Champions is a work of fiction with semi autobiographical allusions. The main
characters of the book are Kilgore Trout, Dwayne Hoover, and Philboyd Sludge. ... Show more

prepares to make a grand entrance as a red eyed, filthy old creature but is thwarted when the desk
clerk recognizes him.
Kilgore cleans up and travels down to the cocktail lounge, where he would soon meet Dwayne
Hoover. Kilgore s luminescent shirt under the ultraviolet lights attracts Hoover to his table.
Hoover demands for Kilgore to give him the message. Hoover snatches Now It Can Be Told, one
of Kilgore s novels, from the table. The book says that there is only one being with free will,
everyone else is a robot (253). The book drives Hoover insane. He believes he is the only one
with free will. He begins attacking people in the lounge. He bites off Kilgore s middle finger.
Hoover leaves the hotel and attacks the people he meets outside until he is placed in a mental
hospital. After Kilgore leaves the hospital, he meets Philboyd Sludge, who reveals that he is
Kilgore s creator. Philboyd then frees him.
Vonnegut makes several social commentaries throughout the novel. The most noticeable are color
and freedom. He describes Christopher Columbus as a white sea pirate who discovers a

Dorothy Parkera Poem Analysis
Coda by Dorothy Parker has a negative connotation on the view of life. It is accurate to describe
this as someone who is very pessimistic, or even a little bit depressed. Therefore I made the tone
of my melody very dark and not inspiring to reflect the personality of the poem. In each subsequent
bar I decrease the initial notedown by a note to represent how the author believes that there is no
reason or motivation for living life. It is seen in each bar that I begin an upward trend with each
initial note but towards the end of each bar I placed a chord that sounds like it is disrupting the
flow of progress and motivation. I see pessimism as a dangerous entity that can harm the happiness
of others and I believe it is clearly seen with the scheme in which I have wrote my melody. In the
beginning of the 5th bar I begin an upward trend of each subsequent initial note that emphasizes the
author s slight change in tone, form completely negative to only slightly negative, indicating that
there might be a change in the author s thoughts. But as the melody continues to build up it all
comes crashing down once the author wrote throwing the battle , and Would you kindly direct me
to hell? . The decreasing melody of sixteenth notes emphasizes the throwing of the battle. A battle
is something that is built up and the end of a battle a victor is decided, but instead of building up
the author decides to throw the battle. Finally, the last note represent hell . It is the lowest note out

The Destiny Of The Republic By Candice Millard
President James Garfield s tragic death is brought to new life in the book The Destiny of the
Republic. Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation
together. This being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had
everything under its belt but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time.
Through poverty, war, a surprising turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President
Garfield s life was a downward spiral and he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was
unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware that they were slowly beginning to unite
over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau. Millard didn t just write a book of
a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly of the personal yet
challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story. The author
really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy
because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father,
worked endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going
onto congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount
of time. These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and
hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make

Hydraulic Fracking In Oklahoma
Oklahoma, the center of what your local meteorologist might call Tornado Alley experiences on
average forty seven twisters per year; however, surprising or not, tornados are no longer the leading
climate related disturbance throughout the state. In fact, since 2008 it has become eighty percent
more likely to experience an earthquake rather than a tornadoin the sooner state. Hydraulic oil
fracturing is the cause of all these relatively new reoccurring earthquakes. Hydraulic fracturing or
fracking is pumping millions of gallons of wastewater deep into the earth s crust in order to
release and extract oil or gas. Oil corporations throughout Oklahoma and Texas use this method of
extricating oil. Fifty years ago people believed that by the year... Show more content on

causes earthquakes. It s known that fracking can cause earthquakes and has caused earthquakes

order to feed his pack. Even though this sounds like id, this is ego because it is a realistic

he is taking Manny and the baby to his pack to be eaten, however even though this is harming

A Surreal Moment Of My Surprise
A Surreal Moment
My heart was pounding, the ballroom was silent and there I was standing in the top two on the
Miss Teen USA stage. All of my hard work and dedication had paid off in that moment. As I was
standing there hand in hand with Miss California Teen, I felt like I had been there before. I had
dreamed about this moment but never expected it to really happen. Strangely, I had a sense of
peace I knew something big was about to happen, and that my life was about to change. The crown
was placed on my head, tears ran down my face, and I took my first walk as Miss Teen USA. It all
started when I was fourteen years old and after much encouragement from others I decided to
compete in the Miss Louisiana Teen USApageant. As the youngest contestant, I felt I was at a
disadvantage but decided to do it for the experience. To my surprise, I was crowned the youngest
ever Miss Louisiana Teen USA in October of my freshman year of high school. I was now
qualified to compete for the title of Miss Teen USA and had ten months to prepare while also
representing the state of Louisiana at numerous charity events. There was much more preparation
than just getting on stage in front of thousands of people in a beautiful gown. I had to learn how
to do my own makeup and hair, work on interview skills, have an evening gown and swimsuit
routine and be prepared to answer an on stage question which was my greatest fear. Being a high
school freshman and juggling

Machiavelli s Once Argentina
How to solve a century long dispute between two countries is much debated over the past few
weeks. In 1833 the diplomatic tension between the United Kingdom and Argentina began over
claims of the Falkland Islands, a remote island south of the Argentine. Decades have passed since
Argentina surrendered to the British army losing the islands. Populist president Cristina Kirchner
has exacerbated the tension with her insulting demands and threats. Recently a new era has
dawned over the country of Argentina with new president Mauricio Macri. Philosopher Niccolo
Machiavelli s plan would advocate that good can come from evil actions. While Mozi s plan
would be to learn from mistakes and figure out what is best for the people and country. While

This is the way to order for the world, and it should not be neglected . Mozi is saying that
President Macri shouldn t just focus his attention on what is best for Argentina and its people.
Mozi says to pay attention to the people of the Falkland Islands as well. If he wants sovereignty
of the islands he has to make sure he wins their trust and loyalty. Mozi s philosophy argues that
people in power should care for all people the same. Some people might argue and say that a
leader should act above everyone else to be able to enforce the rules. But Mozi insists that
President Macri must view the people of the Falkland Islands as if they were his own. A
referendum held on the island in 2013 said 99.8% of the population wanted to remain the current
situation of being an overseas territory under the control of the UK. Treating the islanders as his
own people and not neglect them would help to avoid any type of rebellion. Machiavelli s
solution could ensure that the UK would never interfere with Argentina and the Falkland Islands.
But it would mean that they would have to relive another war that they could lose yet again. Mozi
s plan is superior to Machiavelli s because it would mean President Macri would not be making the
same mistakes as the former leaders. It would mean gaining a new relationship with the UK and the
islands Argentina has repeatedly fought

My Current Views On Epistemic Analysis
My Current Views on Epistemology This essay will lay out my current views of epistemic
topics we have discussed throughout the course. I will explain my current views on Skepticism,
Perception, Gettier Problem, Justification, A Priori, and the role of the Two Systems. I will first
explain my current views I hold and the reasons behind why I hold my current viewpoints of the
six topics listed above. I will begin by discussing my viewpoints of Skepticism. While looking back
at my first exam of the course, my viewpoints of Skepticism were based off of Hume s
Skepticism. Looking back, I would say that I still have to agree with some of Hume s ideas about
Skepticism. In my exam I wrote about how the external world helps us form ideas and opinions....

Externalism, with little disadvantages. Also, my viewpoints of perception could change if I
unexpectedly become deaf or blind, which could alter my experience of the world completely. As
I grow older my experiences will change me into a different person and have a significant impact

The Impact Of Technological Development On The Growth And...
Distribution had always been costly process for the tourism industry until technology was
introduced. Technological development in the tourism industry of distribution systems consists of
three main stages from the evolution and development of airline reservation systems (ARS),
computer reservation systems such as SABREand global distribution systems (GDS) that are now
currently in place. The roles of these distributors and stages will be assessed. The impacts of the
growth and development of distribution via the internet causes global distribution system
companies to create changes in their business models to adapt to the evolution of new technology.
Before any technological systems, airlines took the initiative to create systems to solve issues
such as informing possible passengers about whether or not they are able to book a seat. This
process was very slow and required a lot of work to be done manually, bookings were usually
made through telegrams, letters or even over the phone. The lack of direct communication
between customers and airlines caused problems with over booking seats and under booking
seats for a certain flight (Copeland, D and Mckenney, J. 1988). This made office jobs at airlines
more labour intensive and stressful. Neither efficient for the customer nor the service provider.
Therefore airlines created the card system, each airline office in each city would have a boards on
the wall for particular flights which then had slots to represent the number of

The team just wanted to bounce a few ideas off of them, but Ben thought it was a formal meeting
that he had to be present and a part of. The team was angry because Ben was so aggressive. They
just needed to be reminded that IFG had certain protocols they needed to follow. Josh s team
also struggled with coming up with the costs and benefits of their proposed work for Sheema
(McKeen et al., 2012). They wouldn t be aware of the fiscal cost until they knew exactly what
they were capable of. It would be difficult for his team to outline their budget, but they could come
up with an approximate estimate of their costs and benefits for Sheema. They could sit down with
her and explain the possible worth of their proposed ideas, so she would not be bothering them
during their process.
How can Josh win support for his team s three point plan to use technology to help IFG reach its
customers? When Josh and his team was finally ready for his presentation, it was picked apart by
the IT office. They exploited every hole in his three point plan. Sheema was concerned about the

What Is Howard Shore s Music
Howard Shore is one of the most legendary and esteemed composer and music conductor in
present time. The Lord of the Rings is his most well known compositions and has been the best
of his achievements in his entire career. This trilogy alone has earned him three academy awards.
This three part trilogy cost a whopping $300 million dollars. The setting for his music was placed
in Middle Earth, and Shore had to write music for Hobbits, Dwarfs, Elves and all the other
creatures belonging to Tolkien s fantasy world.
At first, Howard did not have a clear concept or plan; he had only read the novels but did not
know how to get started. Until he finally decided that, the LOTR should be operatic. The reason
behind this choice was that Shore saw the tragedy and struggle in the novels, and saw how it was
already an Opera. Opera and 19th century choral pieces became his inspiration. He made these
compositions otherworldly by using instruments like the penny whistle, African flutes, Indian

did for the Lord of the Rings. For this composition, Howard used strings and piano melodies to

abilities and mastery of composing works of art. This composition is a softer sweater side to his
works in contrast to the beautiful texture and LOTR.
The Fellowship of the Ring contains two and a half hours of music. In this Shore uses strings,
brass and choral sections creating in depth moments. Enya a famous Celtic singer also contributed
to Shores work, giving the music a sense of peacefulness. The first of the movies was all about the
character development and Shore was able to create music that was at first peaceful but changing it

DTCA Sales Promotion
Synapsis
Direct to consumer advertising of prescription medicines (DTCA) can be defined as an effort
(usually via popular media) made by a pharmaceutical company to promote its prescription
products directly to patients.[1] DTCA is prohibited in Canada, under two provisions in Food and
Drugs Act, which is enforced by Health Canada. Despite this prohibition, Health Canada currently
allows two forms of advertising that mention either the product (reminder ads) or the indication
(help seeking ads), but not both.[1,2] The United States and New Zealand are the only countries
where direct to consumer advertising, including full product claim ads, is legal.[1,2] The $395
billion US pharmaceutical industry spent $5.2 billion on DTCA in 2015.[3]

According to an Apr. 2013 survey, 68% of doctors agree that prescription drugs are marketed
before safety profiles can be known.[3] In response to the Vioxx recall from the market in 2004, it
was proposed to institute a mandatory waiting period for new drugs before DTCA is being
permitted. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended a two year advertising moratorium to
conduct adequate post marketing safety surveillance.[1] The same approach could be adopted as a
policy in Canada, to ensure patient safety, while promoting consumer empowerment by enabling
them to participate in informed decisions about their health care with their doctors.
Option 3: Mandatory Pre clearance of Drug Advertising by Health Canada
Drug advertisements should be reviewed and pre cleared by Health Canada in accordance with
their mandates. They have to contain a fair balance of information be provided to consumers,[4]
and require the disclosure of risks that are common and significant, as well as those that are rare
but serious (for example, paralysis or death). Health Canada could impose a fee for this service to
be paid by the pharmaceutical companies.

Family Food Traditions
Family Food Traditions Eating brings people closer together everyday, and for everyone, there
are important memories that have been created because of food. Whether it s a formal dinner, or
an informal picnic, there will always be special bonds between people because food was
involved. We need to have traditions with food because they form and strengthen the bonds
between us. There are holidays in every culture where the food is the focal point. For example,
the most important tradition involving food in the U.S. is Thanksgiving. According to a 2015
poll, 95% of people in the U.S. spend Thanksgiving with their families. Thanksgiving by the
Numbers. Fox Business, Fox Business, 23 Nov. 2016. This is because people in the U.S. grew
up making memories with their families, and they want to make more memories with their
children. These traditions are important to people because they make them nostalgic, so it s
necessary for people to take a break and spend time with their families. To relate the topic of
nostalgia with food to my life, I recall a cherished memory I have about making enchiladas with
my grandma when I was nine. My mom s father is hispanic, but her mother is not, so she learned
how to make hispanic food just for him. I have always admired this, because she learned how to
do this just to make my grandpa happy. She made us many hispanic dishes, but my favorite is still
her enchiladas. I still remember the smell of the chicken and beef that my grandma had prepared

Persuasive Essay On The Future Of The Postal System
The United States Postal Service has been very prominent in everyone s lives, even if most
people don t realize it. Although, over the years many of our needs have changed and email rose
to the top as a new way of sending mail, much of what the USPS had used to its advantage, such as
the large amount of mailthat has been sent physically, has been slowly dissipating over the last
decade or so. From 2008 to 2009, the mail volume dropped by 30 billion, which is a drastic
change compared to the 4 or 5 billion fluctuation between previous years (Source B). As it is
evident, the postal system has changed with our growing need for faster forms of transportation of
information subsided by email. The postal system has been extremely affected by our advances in
technology and it is time that we understand that this process was inevitable, and the USPS needs
to be restructured by doing Sunday delivery, and strategically closing branches to save money and
accommodate to the needs of a changing world .
The major point of competition for the USPS would have to be email, and in some cases, other
postal services (Source E). Over the years whenever the postal service was in its prime, it kept
much of our communication constant, whether mail was being sent from person to person, or even
from the government to the citizens of the U.S. (Source F). Many have worried that without
permanent record of things such as letters, bills, and other information sent through postage, we

Character Strength in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich is a novel about survival.
Solzhenitsyn shows us how even in seemingly atrocious circumstances each person can find
sources of strength that gives them the will to carry on. Many of the things that the prisoners think
of as their sources of strengths would mean nothing to us, but if one thinks about it, without them
we would perhaps lose the will to carry on.
Most of the prisoners have more than one source of strength, perhaps subconsciously they have
made their own fail safes. If they lost one source, they would have other more personal reasons to
carry on. The two main factors of strength that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He studies the New Testament and he uses literature to cut out the outside world. Shukhov does not
seem like a religious man, but as one goes further into the novel, one begins to see him taking a
bigger interest in religion, and more importantly, faith. Alyosha tries to show Shukhov that faith
is the strongest source of strength, and he tells Shukhov to try to see the importance of spiritual
goods rather than material goods. However, objects have a lot of importance to all of the
prisoners. Aloysha hides his New Testament to avoid it being confiscated just Shukhov hides his
bread. This shows us that the Bible is as important to Alyosha as bread is to Shukhov. At the end
of the novel Shukhov gives away a biscuit to Alyosha and expects nothing in return. This shows
that he has taken Alyosha s advice and has chosen to feel spiritual accomplishment rather than
keeping the material good. Property is another source of strength in the novel. Possessing
something that other prisoners do not have is a way of showing individuality in a place where
all the prisoners are marked as the same, ignoring what they have or have not done. Shukhov s
spoon is also very symbolic. Shukhov is forced to hide the spoon in order to keep it from being
taken by the guards. In a way this shows us how the camp tries to take away anything that gives the
prisoners a sense of individuality, or anything that gives them happiness.

Waterfall and Extreme Programming are two software project methods used for project
management. Although there are a number of opinions comparing the two methods regarding how
they should be applied, none have used project data to clearly conclude which one is better. In this

The faculty decided to use Extreme Programming as the method for the Foundations course
because it was an agile method, it had good engineering practices, and it was a safe sandbox
environment for engineers to try paired programming since many managers in industry were
initially skeptical about its benefits. In 2005, the faculty allowed three of the sixteen teams tried
our new curriculum to see if there were any serious issues in the switch, while other thirteen teams
continued to follow a start point in 2004. The feedback was extremely positive so in 2006, all
teams followed Extreme Programming. For the project plan duration, Waterfall teams needed
fifteen weeks to finish their tasks where as Extreme Programming teams were given only thirteen
weeks, a 13% reduction in time.

Causes Of The Old Regime And The French Revolution
In the Old Regime and the French Revolution, by Alexis de Tocqueville, he detailed the ways in
which the French nation was corrupt and how these led to the chaos of the French Revolution.
Among the causes Alexis de Tocqueville listed, the feudal system s corruption was the root of the
French revolution s turmoil. This feudal system was certain to lead to a revolution because of the
anger it was creating among the peasants. In a document written by Abbe Sieyes, What is the Third
Estate, it is revealed that the peasants were being exploited, as they were doing all of the work for
the nation, while receiving nothing in return from their nobles who had promised to protect them
but weren t, and still obtained all of the power. The citizens of the third estate, including the
peasants realized that this system was unjust and began the anarchic French revolution.
The people of the third estate had finally come to realize the corruption of the feudal system, so
they created the National Assembly. The creation of the National Assembly by the third estate,
wreaked havoc among the French nation and marked the beginning of the French Revolution
because the third estate had no legal right to act as the National Assembly. The members of the
National Assembly wanted to reform the government by writing a new constitution and destroying
the old regime, so taxation could be less for them because they ultimately did everything for the
nation. By 1799, there had been five different

Relationship Between Individual Identities And...
Our everyday behaviour, whether at work or at home is believed to be shaped through our
individual identities (Watson, 2006), however the extent to which these individual identities are
shaped by the organisation is questionable. This essay will scrutinize the relationship between
individual identities and organisational culture, looking at whether individualidentities are actually
shaped by the corporate culture, whilst reflecting on whether or not experiences outside of work
can also have an influence. Firstly, looking at definitions of culture and how it controls behaviour
through a soft bureaucracy will allow the development of ideas of whether this shapes the

Rather than using rules and acting as a bureaucracy to achieve the corporate goals, a culture aims to
act as guidance and shape the organisation almost in the way of a soft bureaucracy. Instead of
controlling employees through rules, organisational culture aims to determine the behaviour of
employees and implement control in a very subtle way (McAuley et al, 2014), to ensure that the
values and norms are consistent and behaviours are attached to meaning that reflect and pursue the
goals of the organisation. By encouraging people to become part of the culture and making goals
consistent, it brings about this idea of reshaping individuals within the work place. In this context,
individual identity refers to a work based self concept, constituted of a combination of
organizational, occupational, and other identities that shapes the roles a person adopts and the
corresponding ways he or she behaves when performing his or her work (Walsh and Gordon, 2008,
p47). This highlights the idea that in different organisations, individuals will act differently in line
with either the rules the company sets out or its culture. However, it is important to recognize that
identity within the workplace is only one aspect of an individual s identity. To further this, Watson,
2006, p96) highlights the concept of process relational thinking and how this implies that identities
are adaptable and tend to change as the person shapes and reshapes

Example Of Sociological Imagination
Defined by C. Wright Mills sociological imagination is being able to detect the relationship
between cultural change and the actions of people. Any behavior can have social imagination
applied to it by thinking outside the box and looking at everyday situations with a new
perspective. A person can look at their own personal issues and compare them to society. For
example a person living in poverty might connect their issues to the government in which they
live in. Due to the society changing every day, many problems people face today are often social
problems and similar to others around the world. The lack of living life is seen as a personal
weakness therefore this makes the problem worse. The idea of sociological imaginationcan be

best example we have for how Myth has shaped and developed the feminist movement. Sophocles
drama Antigone, written around 441 BCE, is one of his three Theban plays that chronicle the dark
fortunes of the house of Oedipus, king of Thebes. After Oedipus death, there is a struggle over the
kingship between his two sons Eteocles and Polyneices. The army of Polyneices marches on
Thebes and is defeated, but both brothers are killed in the battle. The new ruler, Creon, decrees that
whereas Eteocles will be buried with full honours for defending the city, the rebel Polyneices
must be denied holy rites and left to rot in the field and if anyone disobeys him they are to be
punished by death. The state and patriarchy take high place within the novel as it does in many
Grecian teaching places. The play was used to teach the subjects of the citadel about respect for the

thrilling themes of fear, death, and tragedy, Poe s work goes beyond the purpose of literary
entertainment and revealing his own inner demons. His writing may be heavily influenced by his

impulse of doing something counterintuitive to to self help. Overall the idea of acting on impulse
was not being studied and ignored. The narrator feels strongly that people should study and
understand all sides of man, and especially the perverse side. He believes that the way men live
should be based on nature rather than how they should be living. This is not to say that men
should commit murder, rather simply understand what they are capable of and to explain the
natural desire to do so. It would have been wiser, it would have been safer, to classify (if classify

Expat Kids How to Cope With the Right Attitude!
By Steven McManus
Jul 15, 2009
Is being an expat all about attitude, and if so, does this have an immense influence on expat
children and how they perceive their situation in this new environment?
After much research on the topic there were a few points that stood out for me on how to be an
expat child these are discussed below:
1. Attitude
Your attitude as the adult and parent is going to greatly influence how your children settle in the
country and accept the move.
We can decide whether to be positive or negative about becoming expats. The more positive parent
results in a well adjusted child who looks at the glass half full, finds the positive in every situation
and tries to adjust as much as you do.
Trudie says: We saw this move as a wonderful opportunity to expose our children to the world and
maybe broaden their horizons.
Shirley says: I hated where we moved to and people were not as friendly as I thought they would
be and it was hard and lonely. I had to work hard to change, but with a positive attitude, my children
have become so much happier.
2. Being Open minded:
In every case of becoming an expat, the circumstances you are going to experience are different. If
you have not been brought up in the culture it is going to be an adjustment. Parents need to be open
minded and to allow their children to do the same.
Monique says: Being an expat parent really depends on a lot of things, e.g. where you are

Essay On Estrogen
Jenna Gunselman
12/1/2011
Biochemistry Extra Credit Paper
Estrogen and Its Effects Estrogens are steroids that are important in the reproductive cycles of
humans and some animals, and they are the main female sex hormones. They easily diffuse across
cell membranes, and once they are inside, they bind to estrogen receptors to control many genes and
their expressions. In human women, there are three types of estrogen: estradiol, which is the
dominant form of estrogen in women who are not pregnant, estrone, which is produced during
menopause, and estriol, which is found in pregnant women.
Estradiol is the most potent of the three types of estrogen found in women, almost ten times
stronger than estrone and almost eighty times stronger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both groups were then exposed for another 24 hours to etoposide, a drug used in chemotherapy that
promotes apoptosis. The results of this test showed that caspase 3 activity decreased in cells treated
with estrogen, but increased in cells not treated with estrogen. This supports the hypothesis that
estradiol does have an effect on apoptosis in bone cells, and that without it, cell death will increase
and bone density will diminish.
In addition to its effects on bone health, estrogen also has a huge effect on the cardiovascular
system. Studies have shown that it increases the levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, decreases the
levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, and relaxes and dilates blood vessels so that blood flow will
increase. There is also evidence that estrogens contribute to the maintenance of the health of the
endothelium, or the lining of the blood vessels, thus further protecting the cardiovascular system
from plaque and heart disease. With menopause, estradiol levels drop, and so these effects on the
heart and blood vessels are lowered, giving postmenopausal women a higher risk of heart disease
than premenopausal women.
A study done by Kim and Levin in 2006 at the University of California states that 17 beta estradiol
typically has a protective property on the cardiovascular system, and that it decreases the amount of
cell death in cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells. To test this theory, female rats

Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Of The D
Author Thomas Hardy is typically distinguished for following a trend in which all his fiction is
characterized by chance being the incarnation of the blind forces controlling human destiny. As J
Clipper once said, Hardy reflected Nietzsche s agonized cry that God is dead , in his novels. His
view of life was that since there is no God to give meaning to life, Man is alone in the Universe,
no better and no worse than other creatures who live or have lived for a brief moment on this

Tess is exposed to the cruelty of fate from the moment that God places her into the Durbyfield
family. Born into a poverty stricken and uneducated family, she is subject to the hardships that
that entails. Her Father an alcoholic and her Mother less of a woman than she is herself, her
upbringing already sets her apart from the rest of the world, and she recognizes her
underprivileged condition. Did you say the stars were worlds, Tess? Yes. All like ours? I don t
know, but I think so. They sometimes seem to be like the apples on our stubbard tree. Most of
them splendid and sound a few blighted. Which do we live on a Splendid one or a blighted one?
A blighted one. (Hardy 54) Tess is raised in an environment that encourages a belief in a kind of
predetermination and fatality, demonstrated by the fact that her mother often consults the
complete fortune teller, an old book of astrological guidance. Tess however has been educated,
and thus does not subscribe to the same beliefs that her mother does. In a similar way, Hardy uses
Tess s father John Durbyfield to illustrate the power of fate to change one s life. In chapter one,
when John is told of the nobility that exists in their bloodline, he believes that their life will soon
be catastrophically changed. Don t you really know, Durbyfield, that you are the lineal

Eastern New Mexico University Analysis
Eastern New Mexico University is the optimal choice for me because the faculty cherishes the
success of the students. The first time I visited Eastern, I was fortunate enough to meet with Mr.
Seifert, who truly inspired me to make my decision to attend ENMU. After our initial conversation,
he gave me a tour of the music building. His generosity with his time meant a lot to me. This
particular touch shows the integrity of the universityas unpretentious and attentive, which is
incredibly refreshing specifically at the university level. The stereotypical thought of college to a
high schoolstudent is that college is a frenzy, with students left to fend for themselves, in a high
pressure, an almost impossible atmosphere. My impression of eastern is that the entirety of the
university is involved in the success of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There, the quest for knowledge seems unending, the work environment healthy, the journey
enjoyable, and an atmosphere where I am consistently trying my best to go above and beyond the
expectations. The music faculty is regarded as the best in the state, having a Grammy nominated
faculty member shows the caliber of the music program. When I visited the university, Mr.Seifert
invited me to sit in on a Wind Symphony rehearsal. That Greyhound sound is the cleanest I have
heard. The faculty seems to put an especially personal touch in supporting the accomplishments of
their students. Becoming a music educator, while it is unlikely to achieving a lavish lifestyle,
however, I was reminded at my audition that music really is my passion. This prompted me into
reconsidering music, the support of the faculty and confidence in my playing helped me to decide
on music education. ENMU has the environment, and the best music staff that I know of. I believe
that with these elements, I will achieve my professional

Camp David Accords
The State of Israel formerly known as Palestine is known as one of the most conflict infected
areas. Problems between the Palestinian Arab population and the Israeli one constantly happen.
But how did this come to be? Palestine was an area that was home to an Arab majority prior to
World War II, but do to many factors the Jewish population increased. These factors included
heavy migration into Palestine after the establishment of the British mandate and the Balfour
Declaration, which was signed in 1917. Migration increased as well due to anti Semitism in
Europe and the Holocaust. Due to Britain s lack of control of migration, and problems arising in
the region as well, the decision was given to the U.N. It was a partition plan in 1947 between the
Arabs and the Jewish population, but soon after that Israeldeclared its independence.

A)Government Actors involved in the Camp David Accords.
I.Egypt, more specifically the Egyptian President Anwar Saadat is the first actor, and an
extremely important one since the Camp David Accords involved making a peace agreement
between Israel and Egypt. Egypt was extremely disappointed in prior negotiations with Israel that
called for withdraw of the 1967 border. Prior to that Sadat tried to help make a Middle Eastern
settlement with Israel such as speaking to the Israeli parliament.
II.Minachem Begin was the prime minister of Israel during the time of the Camp David Accords.
Unlike many of the prior prime ministers of Israel he was willing to attend the meet and an
agreement was eventually settled.
III.Jimmy Carter was an extremely important, for he was the one who facilitated the talks. Sadat
and Begin were at a deadlock in negotiations, and Jimmy Carter was able to get Egypt and Israel to
come up with an agreement between the two states.

Master Of Suspense Essay
Alfred Hitchcock the dubbed Master of Suspense created a theory which revolved around the idea
of shock vs. suspense; this theory was called bomb theory . Within this theory, Hitchcock identifies
how if you place a bomb underneath a table and tell the audience of the bomb s presence the
audience will be waiting in anticipation for the moment the bomb goes off. The spectator is
suspended in a state of anticipation and fear; hence, suspense. Following this theory, Under the
Shadow creates Hitchcock s proverbial bomb under the table with a literal warhead crashing
through the roof of our protagonist s home very early into the film. From this point onwards, our
sense of control within the film is lost though the undetonated bomb leaves the film without
exploding, a metaphorical bomb remains which we know has go off at some point. This
metaphorical bomb being an era appropriate, authentic horror with a supernatural being we do not
truly understand.
Overall, Under the Shadow is a film which utilizes horror of both the personal and the natural
which causes it to have striking aesthetic resemblance to Jenifer Kent s The Babadook and Roman
Polanski s Repulsion. These three films deal with the fear of insanity through the use of the other ;
the monsters which plague their minds. However, is there actually a monster or just madness?

Firstly, Babak Anvari the director of Under the Shadow is very stylistic in his editing techniques.

Parliamentary vs Presidential, Which is Better for the...
The parliamentary system is a system of democratic governance wherein the executive and
legislative branches of the government are intertwined and are lead collectively by a Prime
Minister who must have been proven to be competent and capable, as chosen among his party
members. However, the Philippines is currently under the presidential system, also a system of
democratic but republican governance, which is led this time by a president, and wherein there is a
separation of powersbetween the executive and the legislative. In the presidential system, people
have the collective power to vote for the president. On one hand, the similarities between the two
systems can be summed up in one word: democracy. This entails the basic standards of... Show

Another is that Filipinos have a culture of apathy and tend to use religion incorrectly and
passively. People depend on religion and settle for what s okay. In addition, the initial reaction of
Filipinos to change is resistance, and this is why the country does not necessarily progress, or at
least, progress at a continuous rate. Then, countries like Spain and Portugal only rode the economic
tiger after they realized that the only way to survive was change (3.Y). Plus, according to another
critic, the Philippines already had the experience of being under the parliamentary system during the
time of Marcos which only resulted in a People Power Revolution. So why should the country
bother going back to that? (4.Y) However, it was Marcos who envisioned a New Society or a
Bagong Lipunan that urged the poor and privileged to work as one for the country s economic
goals through self realization. (5.Y) Which, as previously stated, are work and/or study ethics of
the Chinese and Jewish (a strong sense of self of hunger for knowledge). In addition, it was also
during Marcos regime that the GNP (Gross National Product, a development indicator of a country

1972 with an average annual growth rate of 6.6%. It was also during this time

Purpose of the Declaration of Independence
Rights of the People
A democracy is a system of government controlled by the people, not by one certain group or
individual. In the Declaration of Independence it states that all men are created equal, an idea which
leads to the concept that all citizens should have the same rights, responsibilities, and influence in
the governing of their country. In writing the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson was
trying to break his ties with the harsh and non democratic rule of the British and begin a new, equal
society and government for America.
Democracy is defined as A system of government in which ultimate political authorityis vested in

He believed that it was time for America to break away from Britain s rule and become its own
nation, which could govern itself. To do this, though, it was necessary to write some sort of
document which would state to the world the basic beliefs on which the nation s new government
would be built. This document was the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson felt that Britain was
doing nothing but hurting America with unfair rules and all sorts of ridiculous taxes. The colonies
and colonists had no rights in determining the very laws which dictated the way they led their lives.
The Declaration of Independence was a formal document stating that the people of America were
breaking away from Britain and that the American colonies were now Free and Independent States.
The Declaration of Independence was the cornerstone of American freedom and equality. By
writing this document, the American Colonies could now begin the process of starting a new way
of life and a new government. Obviously, at the time the Declaration of Independence was written
the concept of equality was more limited than it is today. Certainly, all members of colonial
America did not share equal status. However the concepts of the Declaration of Independence have

But, over the years, the reverse has more often than not be the case in Nigeria. Before and after
independence, the state of Nigeria has always been riddled with the problem of ethnicity, and the
civil service as an institution that is suppose to be transparent and impartial has been affected by
this trend, so much so that the citizenry are beginning to lose faith in the civil service institution
due to poor and ineffective service delivery. Given the above view, this paper intends to ascertain
the claim that, ethnicity has impacted negatively on civil service delivery in Nigeria. In the
circumstance effort will be made to answer the following questions:
(i)What gave rise to ethnicity in the civil service?
(ii)How has it affected the service?
(iii)What concrete measures have been take to solve the problem?
(iv)How could such problems be overcome?
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK In other to help us analyze and understand the concept of
ethnicity and how it is being sustained in the Nigerian civil service structure, the theory of
prebendalism will serve as a guide. The theory of prebendalism is said to be associated with the

The Scratch Of A Pen Chapter Summaries
The Scratch of a Pen by Colin Calloway helps further our understanding of what was happening
during and after the Treaty of Paris. He explains all of the empires in the nation and how they
changed throughout the Seven Years War and leading to the Revolution. While many historians
focus on the Anglo centric perspective of America, Calloway makes sure to stray from this. By
focusing on all of the groups in America he is able to integrate them to show just how complicated
the Treaty s effects were. Calloway also shows these affects as the led up to the Revolution in the
1770s. By looking at different empires and their interactions he shows just how much change
occurred. This also plays into the tensions that occurred between the empires leading... Show more

After the Treaty of Paris, the French are stripped of much of their land however, many people
forget about them. French however, were still in America with no empire to help protect them.
People like Duc de Choiseul tried to rebuild the empire and stand up against the British. This was
difficult since many left or fled from the area. Jesuits left the area trying to find new areas for
missions but were subdued by many different groups. The Spanish especially tried to stop the
Jesuits. Many scattered through North America. In Louisiana, they tried to rebuild with little
avail. The Treaty of Paris did protect the French rights but they had no money and little
settlement. The British did make efforts to try to assimilate the people left however, many
attempts failed since many Americans wanted to forget about the French. Some government did
change and English tried to implement their economy to the areas. French were also split up and
sent to other colonies, many who did not like their presence. Another act called the Quebec Act
of 1774 secured French law but changed the justice laws to English and allowed an open
economy with support of English. Calloway makes sure not to summarize all the French in one
way and tells of the Interior French whose lives changed in a different way. In this area, French
and Natives lived more interconnected and were more spread out. Many crossed the Mississippi and

The Pros And Cons Of Homelessness In America
There are approximately 11,448 people, composed of men, women, and children, who fall in the
homeless category in the state of North Carolina. Of that 11,448, 1,303 are families with small
children. 2,014 of those people live in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, which makes up 20%
of the total homeless population. 1 out of 5 homeless children live within 8 miles of uptown
Charlotte(urbanministrycenter.org). Although there are many programs and services that are
offered to homeless people, there are all sorts of stipulations that come with these services. Chronic
Homelessnessis one of the biggest issues in this country and as a state, North Carolinais doing all
that it can to put an end to this tragedy. As it relates to programs and services offered to the
homeless, there is Coordinated Assessment (CA), which is a community wide system that connects
those who are homeless, to available shelters or housing in the community. HRC or Homeless
Resource Center provides space and community service that serve meals to the homeless during
evening and weekend hours. Shelter Plus Care, also known as SPC is a federally funded housing
program for the homeless. Housing Stability Funding (HSF) is a collaboration between
Mecklenburg County, the city of Charlotte, and Charlotte Housing Authority to coordinate a
funding process to support permanent housing stability for the homeless. Last but not least, there is

Globalizatons and Cherokees
Globalization has caused extreme change on the Cherokee ways of life, institutions, customs and
traditions. The Cherokee people are incorporating more and more of their past traditions in to
their institutions way of life in a means of trying to preserve them in this every changing world.
Once a culture of people that held high their beliefs and way of life was nearly an extinct culture
after the European, and colonization forced these people out of their land. It is important to see
look at the affects that globalization has on the Cherokeepeople because looking at this we can see
how globalization affects human dignity both in a positive manner and in a negative manner.
The education institutions that are on the boundary give the Cherokee children the right to self
fulfillment; it does this by providing them with the right education to go to college or so on if
they wish. The school has incorporated ideas from all over to make sure that their children have
the best possible education that they can get to survive and thrive in the modern world today. Our
culture has played a huge impact on how they view technology. Our culture is constantly obsessing
over the newest and greatest technology, because of this there are tons of jobs in this field. The
Cherokee schools teach children as early as elementary school how to work with different
technology to give them a head start in the culture that surrounds them so that they can keep at a
solid pace with us.

Essay on The Relationship between Dido and Aeneas
The Relationship between Dido and Aeneas
Throughout the beginning of the Aeneid Dido, the queen of Carthage, and Aeneas, son of Venus
and leader of the Trojans have an intimate relationship that ends in death. The relationship begins in
Book I when Venus, the goddess of love, has her other son Cupidfill Dido with passion for Aeneas,
to ensure Aeneas s safety in this new land. Meanwhile Venus/Plotted new stratagems, that Cupid,
changed/ In form and feature, should appear instead/ Of young Ascanius, and by his gifts/ Inspire
the queen to passion, with his fire/ Burning her very bones. (693) Venus did this to protect Aeneas
and his son, in fear that Dido would have otherwise been cruel to them.

They both do this for their own personal well being, but it does bring the couple together even
more then originally intended. Dido s passion has gone out of control, which causes physical and
emotional disorder. What woman/ In love is helped by offerings or altars?/ Soft fire consumes the
marrow bones, the silent/ Wound grows, deep in the heart. (67) This is an excellent example of
Dido s inability to control her passion, whereas she resembles the fire, and the wounds make the
fire grow deeper. The reference to her marrowbones is probably in place to reinforce the lust that
cupid had burned within her bones earlier. Her burning passion for Aeneas makes her grow
physically sick.
Dido has realized that her relationship with Aeneas is over, and that her compelling passion for
him will bring her to an end, and she is still unable to change the course of events. When Dido
learns about Aeneas s departure she is overcome by rage, and despair, which brings her to the
decision that she will kill herself. Then Dido prays for death at last; (488). She has hoped that
Aeneas would fall and die, untimely, let him like unburied on the sand. (662). At this time she lies
down on the funeral pyre and stabs herself with Aeneas s sword.
Although Aeneas was a star struck lover, he is driven by fate to his only true love, Italy, and it
appears that he has replaced his love for Dido with the love for his future home. Shove off, be
gone! A

Les Miserables at Imperial Theater Essay
Les Miserables Play
A few weeks ago, I had a chance to watch Les Miserables at Imperial Theater. Les Miserables is
play based on Victor Hugo s award winning novel. I must admit that the play made me realize the
great stories that will continue be told in mass media for years to come. Much to my astonishment,
the characters in the play essentially delivered a great show, ranging from their acting to their
singing.
I believe that Les Miserables is one of the most intricate stories with a plot featuring heroic life of a
simple and good man, Jean Valjean, a role performed in the play by Matt Kinley. The original novel
to which the play was based on has been my personal favorite since it portrays its lead actor as a
morally upright person. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The members of the orchestra were dressed in button down and a tie, and dress coats, while ladies
wore uniform dresses based on the culture that existed during the writing of the novel by Hugo.
The play attracted an audience of almost a thousand, majority of which were senior adults who
wanted to see how the young generation could bring out the concepts of Hugo s novel into
action. A good number of the poorer audience members were allowed to pay a few bucks to stand
in front of the stage while the affluent majority sat on the covered galleries, paying twice as much
as the poor audience for their seats. I could realize that the attendance was beyond the expectations
of the play s organizer because most people complained about missing a ticket to watch it.
The play was so well done, and the opening section was somewhat grand considering the fact that
actors and actresses played their part and portrayed the characters in a way I could really relate to. I
have always like live performances, and one thing the producer of Les Miserables introduced was
the orchestra switch their voices between prerecorded and live scenes, this gave the play a sense of
immediacy and power.
With this I mind, I noticed that staging a play doesn t have to be about the exact plat or characters
of its original

Initiation Rites Of Womanhood Analysis
The Initiation Rites of Womanhood: An Analysis of the Connection of the Sande Costumes of
Sierra Leone and Human Communication This communications study will definer the important
ritual of the initiation rites of womanhood in the symbolic use of costumes as form of human
communication in Sierra Leone. The Sande female society in Liberia, Sierra Leone has a long
standing tradition of using the Bundu Mask and hair covered costume as a way for older women to
welcome girls into womanhood after their three month seclusion in the forest. In this manner, the
costume serves as a symbolic welcoming gesture to young women that are entering into
womanhood by the elder women of the community: On this occasion, the masks are worn by
women with some rank in society to welcome the younger women at the end of their three month
seclusion in the forest. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In modern times, the Sande costume is still used in the fertility/coming of age ritual, yet women in
Sierra Leone are extremely aware of the ancient form of communication that it represents in the 21st
century: The traditional costume is indeed worn in the bush, but the girls return to ordinary life
dressed in the most up to date Creole fashions (Little 56). In this way, the girls and the older women
partake in wearing the costumes, which represent an ancient confirmation of womanhood within
the context of modern 21st century culture. The Sande female society utilizes the symbolic
costumes of fertility and womanhood as way to communicate an acknowledge identity in the
community. This is an important aspect of how women communicate with each other in these
intensively ritualistic aspects of the coming of age traditions in Sierra Leone. These are important
modes of human communication involving the Sande coming of age costumes for females in Sierra

  • 2. Comparing Magic In The Eye Of The World And The Magician Magic or unexplained science, some would say, is the human brain s way of understanding what appears impossible. Magic is also a way one can feel special because magic allows things to appear out of thin air or happen instantly and everyone wishes this were true. Everyone person who has an encounter with magic, deals with magic in different ways, yet there can be similarities. Similarities can be seen in the novels, The Magicians by Lev Grossman, The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, and The Magician by Raymond E. Feist. Each novel has a main character who becomes deeply involved with magic, but with different end games. When dealing with magic, one must learn the significance of it which in turn helps the wielder of magic or reader feel as if the impossible has become possible. Within the novel, The Magician Pug doesn t understand the significance of magic and this cause him to struggle while learning his craft. While Pug is talking with Father Tully he says, Each time I try one of the simple spells Kulgan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dear Princess Carline learned the true value of magic when Pug used it to save her life. She stepped closer to him and placed a hand on his arm. Thank you, (Feist, 54). The Princess Carline had not felt guilty when she had left Pug alone with the trolls who Pug had drowned using magic, but when he came back to her in one piece, Pug could tell the Princess knew she was in the wrong. The Princess, before Pug used magic to kill the trolls, disregarded magic, even hated it some might say, but through Pug using it to save her life instead of kill her with it, allowed the Princess to see why magic was so valued in her kingdom. Pug learned to value magic in a different way, in a different world to be more precise and the way he valued magic is different than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Case Study Of Barclays 3.6.2Barclays Case study 3.6.2.1Barclays: Historical Perspective on the British giant Throughout the history of multinational banking, British banks have retained large market shares in a variety of countries over long periods of time (Jones, 1990 and Wilkins, 1970). As outlined at the initial stage of this dissertation, CSR as a concept appeared for the first time in the 1950s (Bowen, 1953). On that basis, this sub section will focus on a historical perspective of Barclays from the post war period onwards. The main banking strategies of the post war period (1945 1980) emphasized geographical diversification. Barclays established branches overseas on the grounds that British multinational manufacturers would need the dynamic assistance of British banks in the post war world. By establishing foreign branches, Barclays signalled to its clients that it was willing to guarantee all its global assets for local activities. Moreover, several banks established development corporations, with the intention of providing credit facilities in developing economies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Barclays shifted the group s international ambitions at that time. It had the intention to become a major global bank, by moving away from its legacy in retail banking, but offering Foreign Exchange (FX), broking, corporate finance and investment management services worldwide. In the last decade of the 20th century Barclays developed its two pillar strategy of international expansion: expansion in the markets of developed economies and emphasis on investment, rather than on retail banking. Regarding the Asian market, Barclays was devoted to the narrow product service offering. In Singapore it was offering investment banking services solely, while in Australia it was engaged in lending to small and medium sized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Limitations Of Rapid Diagnostics Timely administration of appropriate antibiotics is essential for decreasing hospital mortality in patients with sepsis12. Kumar et al. demonstrated that with each hour delay, there is a 7.6% decrease in survival. Moreover, delaying appropriate antibiotics can increase healthcare costs, length of stay and antimicrobial resistance13, 14. Traditional methods of microbial identification have time concerns. Most laboratories take 48 72 hours to determine microorganisms susceptibility testing10, 15. Kerremans et al. did a prospective randomized controlled trial over two years period included 1489 patients to determine the utility of rapid diagnostic testing against traditional methods15. The intervention group had 20 hours mean reduction for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In another study by the same author, compared a historical control group with MALDI TOF MS coupled with antimicrobial stewardship and showed mortality benefits (21% vs 8.9%; p = 0.01)19. The later study overcame some of the limitations of the previous study and included only patients with antibiotic resistance gram negative bacteremia with sufficient sample size. Selecting the most appropriate and cost effective rapid diagnostic testing is somehow challenging given the wide range of commercially available diagnostic tools. Some of these tools require labor intensive clinical laboratories work with high complexity10. For gram negative bacteremia, two tools have potential clinical benefits, Verigene gram negative blood culture (BC GN) and FilmArray blood culture identification (BCID) given their ability to detect resistance patterns in certain microorganisms and have a short turnaround time after a positive blood culture. A study by MacVane S et al. examined the usefulness of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) coupled with BCID versus conventional organism identification coupled with ASP or conventional organism identification (controls) alone20. Although microorganism identification was shorter in the BCID group (17 hours vs 54 to 57 hours; p 0.001), there was no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Breakfast of Champions Essay Breakfast of Champions When one hears the phrase Breakfast of Champions, he envisions a grinning picture of Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan slam dunking, or Dale Earnhardt in a racecar on a box of Wheaties, a popular breakfast cereal. A few avid Saturday Night Live fans might recall a skit performed by James Belushi. In the skit, Belushi s Breakfastof Championswas beer, cigarettes, and donuts. Neither of these examples are the subject of Kurt Vonnegut s Breakfast of Champions or Good Bye Blue Morning. A Breakfast of Champions is actually a martini. Breakfast of Champions is a work of fiction with semi autobiographical allusions. The main characters of the book are Kilgore Trout, Dwayne Hoover, and Philboyd Sludge. ... He continues hitchhiking and is picked up various truckers. He walks to his hotel after being caught in a traffic jam a mile away. Kilgore s arrives at the hotel. He prepares to make a grand entrance as a red eyed, filthy old creature but is thwarted when the desk clerk recognizes him. Kilgore cleans up and travels down to the cocktail lounge, where he would soon meet Dwayne Hoover. Kilgore s luminescent shirt under the ultraviolet lights attracts Hoover to his table. Hoover demands for Kilgore to give him the message. Hoover snatches Now It Can Be Told, one of Kilgore s novels, from the table. The book says that there is only one being with free will, everyone else is a robot (253). The book drives Hoover insane. He believes he is the only one with free will. He begins attacking people in the lounge. He bites off Kilgore s middle finger. Hoover leaves the hotel and attacks the people he meets outside until he is placed in a mental hospital. After Kilgore leaves the hospital, he meets Philboyd Sludge, who reveals that he is Kilgore s creator. Philboyd then frees him. Vonnegut makes several social commentaries throughout the novel. • 6. Dorothy Parkera Poem Analysis Coda by Dorothy Parker has a negative connotation on the view of life. It is accurate to describe this as someone who is very pessimistic, or even a little bit depressed. Therefore I made the tone of my melody very dark and not inspiring to reflect the personality of the poem. In each subsequent bar I decrease the initial notedown by a note to represent how the author believes that there is no reason or motivation for living life. It is seen in each bar that I begin an upward trend with each initial note but towards the end of each bar I placed a chord that sounds like it is disrupting the flow of progress and motivation. I see pessimism as a dangerous entity that can harm the happiness of others and I believe it is clearly seen with the scheme in which I have wrote my melody. In the beginning of the 5th bar I begin an upward trend of each subsequent initial note that emphasizes the author s slight change in tone, form completely negative to only slightly negative, indicating that there might be a change in the author s thoughts. But as the melody continues to build up it all comes crashing down once the author wrote throwing the battle , and Would you kindly direct me to hell? . The decreasing melody of sixteenth notes emphasizes the throwing of the battle. A battle is something that is built up and the end of a battle a victor is decided, but instead of building up the author decides to throw the battle. Finally, the last note represent hell . It is the lowest note out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Destiny Of The Republic By Candice Millard President James Garfield s tragic death is brought to new life in the book The Destiny of the Republic. Author Candice Millard shows readers just how that very incident brought one nation together. This being in the middle of the Gilded Age, at times it looked like the nation had everything under its belt but in reality, people didn t see the corrupt happenings at that time. Through poverty, war, a surprising turn in events, to downright failure in medicine, President Garfield s life was a downward spiral and he wasn t even aware. As much as Garfield was unaware of that, Americans at the time were unaware that they were slowly beginning to unite over the ignorance of both Doctor Bliss and Charles Guiteau. Millard didn t just write a book of a detailed and historic biography, she wrote somewhat effortlessly of the personal yet challenging circumstances Garfield and his family were in and simply told a story. The author really goes in depth and is interested in Garfield s poverty stricken family as a young boy because this is one of the many reasons America adored him so much. As he lost his father, worked endlessly to be able to attend college, became a teacher after just one year, and then going onto congress, he rose up to become the best president the nation has ever had in that short amount of time. These details portrayed about his upbringing, show people how remarkably significant and hardworking this man was. Millard shows that Garfield knew he was brought up to make ... Hydraulic Fracking In Oklahoma Oklahoma, the center of what your local meteorologist might call Tornado Alley experiences on average forty seven twisters per year; however, surprising or not, tornados are no longer the leading climate related disturbance throughout the state. In fact, since 2008 it has become eighty percent more likely to experience an earthquake rather than a tornadoin the sooner state. Hydraulic oil fracturing is the cause of all these relatively new reoccurring earthquakes. • 10. A Surreal Moment Of My Surprise A Surreal Moment My heart was pounding, the ballroom was silent and there I was standing in the top two on the Miss Teen USA stage. All of my hard work and dedication had paid off in that moment. As I was standing there hand in hand with Miss California Teen, I felt like I had been there before. I had dreamed about this moment but never expected it to really happen. Strangely, I had a sense of peace I knew something big was about to happen, and that my life was about to change. The crown was placed on my head, tears ran down my face, and I took my first walk as Miss Teen USA. It all started when I was fourteen years old and after much encouragement from others I decided to compete in the Miss Louisiana Teen USApageant. As the youngest contestant, I felt I was at a disadvantage but decided to do it for the experience. To my surprise, I was crowned the youngest ever Miss Louisiana Teen USA in October of my freshman year of high school. I was now qualified to compete for the title of Miss Teen USA and had ten months to prepare while also representing the state of Louisiana at numerous charity events. There was much more preparation than just getting on stage in front of thousands of people in a beautiful gown. I had to learn how to do my own makeup and hair, work on interview skills, have an evening gown and swimsuit routine and be prepared to answer an on stage question which was my greatest fear. In 1833 the diplomatic tension between the United Kingdom and Argentina began over claims of the Falkland Islands, a remote island south of the Argentine. Decades have passed since Argentina surrendered to the British army losing the islands. Populist president Cristina Kirchner has exacerbated the tension with her insulting demands and threats. Recently a new era has dawned over the country of Argentina with new president Mauricio Macri. Philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli s plan would advocate that good can come from evil actions. This is the way to order for the world, and it should not be neglected . Mozi is saying that President Macri shouldn t just focus his attention on what is best for Argentina and its people. Mozi says to pay attention to the people of the Falkland Islands as well. If he wants sovereignty of the islands he has to make sure he wins their trust and loyalty. Mozi s philosophy argues that people in power should care for all people the same. Some people might argue and say that a leader should act above everyone else to be able to enforce the rules. But Mozi insists that President Macri must view the people of the Falkland Islands as if they were his own. A referendum held on the island in 2013 said 99.8% of the population wanted to remain the current situation of being an overseas territory under the control of the UK. Treating the islanders as his own people and not neglect them would help to avoid any type of rebellion. Machiavelli s solution could ensure that the UK would never interfere with Argentina and the Falkland Islands. But it would mean that they would have to relive another war that they could lose yet again. Mozi s plan is superior to Machiavelli s because it would mean President Macri would not be making the same mistakes as the former leaders. It would mean gaining a new relationship with the UK and the islands Argentina has repeatedly fought ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. The Impact Of Technological Development On The Growth And... Distribution had always been costly process for the tourism industry until technology was introduced. Technological development in the tourism industry of distribution systems consists of three main stages from the evolution and development of airline reservation systems (ARS), computer reservation systems such as SABREand global distribution systems (GDS) that are now currently in place. The roles of these distributors and stages will be assessed. The impacts of the growth and development of distribution via the internet causes global distribution system companies to create changes in their business models to adapt to the evolution of new technology. Before any technological systems, airlines took the initiative to create systems to solve issues such as informing possible passengers about whether or not they are able to book a seat. This process was very slow and required a lot of work to be done manually, bookings were usually made through telegrams, letters or even over the phone. The lack of direct communication between customers and airlines caused problems with over booking seats and under booking seats for a certain flight (Copeland, D and Mckenney, J. 1988). This made office jobs at airlines more labour intensive and stressful. Neither efficient for the customer nor the service provider. Therefore airlines created the card system, each airline office in each city would have a boards on the wall for particular flights which then had slots to represent the number of ... This three part trilogy cost a whopping $300 million dollars. The setting for his music was placed in Middle Earth, and Shore had to write music for Hobbits, Dwarfs, Elves and all the other creatures belonging to Tolkien s fantasy world. At first, Howard did not have a clear concept or plan; he had only read the novels but did not know how to get started. Until he finally decided that, the LOTR should be operatic. Causes Of The Old Regime And The French Revolution In the Old Regime and the French Revolution, by Alexis de Tocqueville, he detailed the ways in which the French nation was corrupt and how these led to the chaos of the French Revolution. Among the causes Alexis de Tocqueville listed, the feudal system s corruption was the root of the French revolution s turmoil. This feudal system was certain to lead to a revolution because of the anger it was creating among the peasants. In a document written by Abbe Sieyes, What is the Third Estate, it is revealed that the peasants were being exploited, as they were doing all of the work for the nation, while receiving nothing in return from their nobles who had promised to protect them but weren t, and still obtained all of the power. The citizens of the third estate, including the peasants realized that this system was unjust and began the anarchic French revolution. The people of the third estate had finally come to realize the corruption of the feudal system, so they created the National Assembly. The creation of the National Assembly by the third estate, wreaked havoc among the French nation and marked the beginning of the French Revolution because the third estate had no legal right to act as the National Assembly. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rather than using rules and acting as a bureaucracy to achieve the corporate goals, a culture aims to act as guidance and shape the organisation almost in the way of a soft bureaucracy. Instead of controlling employees through rules, organisational culture aims to determine the behaviour of employees and implement control in a very subtle way (McAuley et al, 2014), to ensure that the values and norms are consistent and behaviours are attached to meaning that reflect and pursue the goals of the organisation. By encouraging people to become part of the culture and making goals consistent, it brings about this idea of reshaping individuals within the work place. In this context, individual identity refers to a work based self concept, constituted of a combination of organizational, occupational, and other identities that shapes the roles a person adopts and the corresponding ways he or she behaves when performing his or her work (Walsh and Gordon, 2008, p47). This highlights the idea that in different organisations, individuals will act differently in line with either the rules the company sets out or its culture. However, it is important to recognize that identity within the workplace is only one aspect of an individual s identity. Due to the society changing every day, many problems people face today are often social problems and similar to others around the world. The new ruler, Creon, decrees that whereas Eteocles will be buried with full honours for defending the city, the rebel Polyneices must be denied holy rites and left to rot in the field and if anyone disobeys him they are to be punished by death. The state and patriarchy take high place within the novel as it does in many Grecian teaching places. By Steven McManus Jul 15, 2009 Is being an expat all about attitude, and if so, does this have an immense influence on expat children and how they perceive their situation in this new environment? After much research on the topic there were a few points that stood out for me on how to be an expat child these are discussed below: 1. Attitude Your attitude as the adult and parent is going to greatly influence how your children settle in the country and accept the move. We can decide whether to be positive or negative about becoming expats. The more positive parent results in a well adjusted child who looks at the glass half full, finds the positive in every situation and tries to adjust as much as you do. Trudie says: We saw this move as a wonderful opportunity to expose our children to the world and maybe broaden their horizons. Shirley says: I hated where we moved to and people were not as friendly as I thought they would be and it was hard and lonely. I had to work hard to change, but with a positive attitude, my children have become so much happier. 2. Being Open minded: In every case of becoming an expat, the circumstances you are going to experience are different. If you have not been brought up in the culture it is going to be an adjustment. Parents need to be open minded and to allow their children to do the same. Monique says: Being an expat parent really depends on a lot of things, e.g. where you are ... Essay On Estrogen Jenna Gunselman 12/1/2011 Biochemistry Extra Credit Paper Estrogen and Its Effects Estrogens are steroids that are important in the reproductive cycles of humans and some animals, and they are the main female sex hormones. They easily diffuse across cell membranes, and once they are inside, they bind to estrogen receptors to control many genes and their expressions. In human women, there are three types of estrogen: estradiol, which is the dominant form of estrogen in women who are not pregnant, estrone, which is produced during menopause, and estriol, which is found in pregnant women. Estradiol is the most potent of the three types of estrogen found in women, almost ten times stronger than estrone and almost eighty times stronger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both groups were then exposed for another 24 hours to etoposide, a drug used in chemotherapy that promotes apoptosis. The results of this test showed that caspase 3 activity decreased in cells treated with estrogen, but increased in cells not treated with estrogen. This supports the hypothesis that estradiol does have an effect on apoptosis in bone cells, and that without it, cell death will increase and bone density will diminish. In addition to its effects on bone health, estrogen also has a huge effect on the cardiovascular system. Studies have shown that it increases the levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, decreases the levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, and relaxes and dilates blood vessels so that blood flow will increase. There is also evidence that estrogens contribute to the maintenance of the health of the endothelium, or the lining of the blood vessels, thus further protecting the cardiovascular system from plaque and heart disease. With menopause, estradiol levels drop, and so these effects on the heart and blood vessels are lowered, giving postmenopausal women a higher risk of heart disease than premenopausal women. A study done by Kim and Levin in 2006 at the University of California states that 17 beta estradiol typically has a protective property on the cardiovascular system, and that it decreases the amount of cell death in cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells. • 42. Master Of Suspense Essay Alfred Hitchcock the dubbed Master of Suspense created a theory which revolved around the idea of shock vs. suspense; this theory was called bomb theory . Within this theory, Hitchcock identifies how if you place a bomb underneath a table and tell the audience of the bomb s presence the audience will be waiting in anticipation for the moment the bomb goes off. The spectator is suspended in a state of anticipation and fear; hence, suspense. Following this theory, Under the Shadow creates Hitchcock s proverbial bomb under the table with a literal warhead crashing through the roof of our protagonist s home very early into the film. • 52. Les Miserables at Imperial Theater Essay Les Miserables Play A few weeks ago, I had a chance to watch Les Miserables at Imperial Theater. Les Miserables is play based on Victor Hugo s award winning novel. I must admit that the play made me realize the great stories that will continue be told in mass media for years to come. Much to my astonishment, the characters in the play essentially delivered a great show, ranging from their acting to their singing. I believe that Les Miserables is one of the most intricate stories with a plot featuring heroic life of a simple and good man, Jean Valjean, a role performed in the play by Matt Kinley. The original novel to which the play was based on has been my personal favorite since it portrays its lead actor as a morally upright person. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The members of the orchestra were dressed in button down and a tie, and dress coats, while ladies wore uniform dresses based on the culture that existed during the writing of the novel by Hugo. The play attracted an audience of almost a thousand, majority of which were senior adults who wanted to see how the young generation could bring out the concepts of Hugo s novel into action. A good number of the poorer audience members were allowed to pay a few bucks to stand in front of the stage while the affluent majority sat on the covered galleries, paying twice as much as the poor audience for their seats. I could realize that the attendance was beyond the expectations of the play s organizer because most people complained about missing a ticket to watch it. The play was so well done, and the opening section was somewhat grand considering the fact that actors and actresses played their part and portrayed the characters in a way I could really relate to. I have always like live performances, and one thing the producer of Les Miserables introduced was the orchestra switch their voices between prerecorded and live scenes, this gave the play a sense of immediacy and power. With this I mind, I noticed that staging a play doesn t have to be about the exact plat or characters of its original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
