State of Racism and Gender Discrimination
State of Racism and Gender Discrimination
What is discrimination? Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of a different person or groups of
people based on certain characteristics. In the United States there are seven protected characteristics or
classes that are defined by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination
Employment Act, and the American Disabilities Act that can not be discriminated against: race, color,
religion, national origin, sex, age, and disability. This paper focuses on two of the protected classes:
race and gender discrimination.
What is racism? Racism (also known as discrimination against a race or races) is a belief that all

These requirements are important to becoming a fire fighter and many argue that they are more than
necessary. However, this does not mean that the fire department does not want to work with women. It
is just the policy to set the standards high. Another interesting example: A male employee was fired by
his employer because he refused to work at night ( Small Business Encyclopedia 2002). This company
had a policy saying that women did not have to work at night because the company was located in a
high crime area. The male employees had to work the night shifts for the company, while the women
employees did not. The male employee in question filed a suit under Title VII against his employer
claiming sexual discrimination. The company claimed that several female employees would quit if
they were forced to work at night. The company also claimed the policy was a bona fide occupational
qualification (BFOQ). This case is interesting because BFOQ can be used as a defense to allow certain
discrimination. BFOQ is an exception provided by Title VII for jobs that require a specific religion,
sex, national origin, or age as a reasonable necessity for normal operations of a business. Although
BFOQ applies to the fire department qualifications, the courts deemed that the company who asked
only its male workers to take the night shift was could not use BFOQ as a valid defense ( Small

Tenement House Law Research Paper
Tenement houses are mainly for people that are/were poor. They do not exist in America. They do
exist in India and overpopulated and poor countries. The purpose of these was to solve the problems
of the homeless. It solved the problem but the conditions were way too harsh for them. Conditions in
these were terrible, Most people had no lights or any air. They were overcrowded. They were very
dirty. Laws were eventually made to improve the conditions in these tenement houses. They made
changes because people were dying from terrible conditions. One law that improved conditions was
the Tenement House Act of 1867, which required a toilet for every 20 people. The Tenement House
Law outlawed the building of any more tenements on a 25 foot lot.

Struggle for Children’s Rights
I want a permanent divorce, this is a saying of a 10 year old wife who was suffering from child
marriage (Worth, Voices Child Marriage Yemen ). Child marriage is a terrible scenario for children,
especially for little girls. They are forced to marry, before they are mature enough due to social norms,
traditions and their family members, whom they are depending on. According to statistics in 2013, in
Bangladesh, the child marriage prevalence under the age of 18 is 66%. 240 among 100,000 child
wives died, when they gave birth. In Niger, this figure rises to 75% and 339. In Chad, this figure is
68% and maternal mortality rate rises to 1100 (UNICEF State of the World s Children 2013, Table 9:

That means society has to suffer because of increasing abundance of illiteracy in a population.
Because child wives are not received enough education. Therefore, they are unable to take a job
because of lack of necessary skills and knowledge. It maintains their [child wives] low societal status
and makes their families vulnerable to an intergenerational cycle of poverty that hinders the
development of their communities ( Child Marriage ). Also, child marriage causes the decreasing of
the number of skilled labors that is about to participate in economic activities in local and even in
national level. Therefore, the economic growth is slowed down exponentially. The changes and renew
in the laws to prevent child marriage should be done to make society develop and help little girls
improve their values and social status. Although child marriage causes many serious problems for the
society, process of preventing from child marriage is not easy.
Protecting children from child marriage is problematic and in long term scale. Although people are

Oregon Trail Emigrants
Tens of thousands of people died during the westward expansion, and many groups in particular
resisted great hardships, but one group stands out. Groups that faced difficulty are the gold rush
pioneers, the Chinese railroad workers, and the Oregon trail emigrants. Out of the three, the Oregon
Trail emigrants faced the greatest difficulty because of the harsh geography, disease, and accidents the
emigrants were exposed to on the trail. Because the geography of which the Oregon ran through was
rough and brutal, it had a large impact on the travellers. The snow covered trails made it difficult to
travel on the trail, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Going through snowstorms in the mountains
was considered certain death in some areas. there would be large snow storms, this gave a large threat

In fact, 90% of all deaths on the Oregon Trail were a result of incurable illnesses. Most people who
died during the trip west became ill from diseases for which there was no cure (Illinois State). Since
there was no cure for the illnesses, emigrants suffered greatly before they died. Bad water, polluted by
hastily constructed latrines, made it difficult for travelers to get an essential human right from the
rivers: water. Disease spread through convoys and wagon trains rapidly, infecting many at a time.
People witnessed the decline and death of family and friends on the trail. You see we have lost 7
persons in a few short days, all died of Cholera (Freel). Martha Freel, a traveling emigrant, witnessed
the death of her friends and father to cholera,a very frequent killer on the trail. The illnesses not only
physically damaged the travellers, but mentally as well. Witnessing such sickness of friends and
family took a toll on the travellers, and lowered the will to

The Battles Of The Korean War Essay
On June 25, 1950, a war broke out on the peninsula of North and South Korea. The causes of this war
were mostly attributed to North Korea s attempted conquest of the entire Korean peninsula. North
Korea invaded the South and thus began the Korean War. This was a war that ultimately involved the
forces of the United States and numerous other countries. The Korean War cost the lives of 2,000,000
people in only three years. This catastrophic loss of life was due to the events took place during the
war. Many, many battles took place during the Korean War.
At dawn on June 25, 1950, 90,000 soldiers were sent into the Southern Republic of Korea or South
Korea. These 90,000 men made up two thirds of the 135,000 man army of North Korea. On June ...

With a boost in morale, the UN forces continue to push forward. Soon, Pyongyang, the North Korean
capital, was captured. At this point, the end of the war appears to be in sight.
China, however, did not like the close proximity that the battles were reaching to China. China
threatened to send soldiers to assist North Korea if the United Nations didn t back off from the Yalu
River. In hopes of ending the war before Christmas, General MacArthur ignored China s warnings and
pressed forward trying to oppress North Korean forces to force them into surrendering.
On November 25, the Chinese launched a major offensive which resulted in immense casualties for
the UN forces. The U.S. 2nd and 25th divisions were defeated and were forced to retreat from the Yalu
River. After several days of fighting the forces at the river, the Chinese force the UN allies to retreat.
Once UN forces retreat, they once again become encircled by the communists and attempt to escape in
one of the most bloody and desperate actions of the war. The Chinese continued to press onward and
managed to press UN forces 50 miles south of the 38th parallel, an imaginary boundary which
separated the North and South sides of Korea.
With the aid of the Chinese, North Korean forces capture Seoul for the second time. Shortly after
however, UN forces consolidate their lines just under the 37th parallel in South Korea. On January 25,
1951, the UN forces resume their offensive on communist

Chipotle vs Panera
Chipotle vs. Panera Bread Company
Introduction Fast Casual Restaurant fast casual restaurant is a type of restaurant that does not offer full
table service but promises a higher quality of food and atmosphere than a fast food restaurant. In the
USA it is a relatively new and growing concept to fill the space between fast food and casual dining.
The typical cost per meal is in the US$8 $15 range. Two emerging fast casual restaurants are Chipotle
Mexican Grill and Panera Bread.
When Chipotle opened its first store in 1993, the idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast

Panera is proficient in making good, quality products. Their financial position is strong; and they are
known for quality products and great customer service. Panera is not trying to be the Wal Mart,
Starbucks or Microsoft. In a down economy, CEO Ron Shaich continues to target the 92% of
Americans who still have jobs.
Shaich is also taking advantage of the company s cash position and the slow real estate market by
bargaining down lease rates by 20% to 25% from 2008 levels. Plus, Panera can lock in these low
terms for the next 20 years (2009). Chipotle, on the other hand, seems to have created a sustainable
branding strategy that leverages its good food, humorous ads, distinctive interior design, and in store
world music (Wikinvest.com, 2010). The company is positioned to capitalize on their organic and
farm raised food, and high quality ingredients. According to the organic Trade Association (OTA),
organic food sales are growing at a 20% clip annually in the US, although such food only accounts for
3% of all food and beverage sales (Wikinvest.com, 2010). Chipotle is also positioned to tap multiple
markets: baby boomers who can afford to dine out, Hispanics, two income families who do not have
time to cook, and the socially conscious consumer.

expansion. The company has a highly selective process and requires franchisees to

Victorian Era Tea
During the Victorian Era tea became very popular. In fact, it became so widely liked that ale was
displaced as the most favorite of all beverages and tea reigned supreme. During the time of Queen
Victoria, there was a lady in waiting, Anne, the duchess of Bedford. The meals in England consisted of
a huge breakfast, slightly lesser lunch and dinner. After lunch, the duchess would ask her maids to get
her some tea and little cakes to go with it. She drank it in solitude at first, but later, she began inviting
her friends and other ladies to join her. The drinking of tea led to the birth of a thing beyond a habit or
addiction. It became a culture. Tea rooms popped up all over the place, private teas and teas in hotels

Social, Political, And Economical Cause Of The Mexican...
Social, Political, and Economical Causes of the Mexican Revolution There were an abundance of
social, political, and economical factors that led to the Mexican Revolution. Socially, there was a great
displacement in the treatment between the elite and rich classes and the poor classes. Politically, what
once started out as a Republic, after they had won their independence, had transitioned into a
tyrannical dictatorship. Economically, Mexico was over dependent on loans from foreign nations such
as France, Spain, England, and The United State of America.
AFTERMATH OF WAR OF INDEPENDENCE Mexico had gained its independence from Spain in
the year of 1821, although a substantial amount of damage had been inflicted as Mexico was in
disorder and decay. The economy was in shambles, as Mexico owed money to The United States of
America, France, and England. Also, the social classes experienced a drop off in upper class citizens
as every Spaniard was forced out of Mexico after the war for independence. Economically, many
industries such as mining, textile, and others became useless, as there was lack of production, because
of the absence of the Spaniards. The effects of war were very visible throughout all of Mexico as
villages were left ruined, roads were neglected, and about 15 30 percent of the male populations were
unemployed.

Jesus of Nazareth had twelve disciples throughout his public ministry. Of all of Jesus disciples, the
greatest of them was Simon, later renamed Peter. Peter was the Prince of the Apostles . He held
primacy over the other eleven apostles for various reasons. Jesus appointed Saint Peter to be the first
pope; he gave him the keys to the gates of heaven. Saint Peter witnessed numerous miracles and
eventually Jesus passed him the rock . Historically, Saint Peter was the first pope. Regarding the
bishops of Rome, the apostle Peter had founded their bishopric. Jesus told Peter that he [is] Peter, and

Classification Between The Objects Is Easy Task For Humans
Classification between the objects is easy task for humans but it has proved to be a complex problem
for machines. The raise of high capacity computers, the availability of high quality and low priced
video cameras, and the increasing need for automatic video analysis has generated an interest in object
classification algorithms. A simple classification system consists of a camera fixed high above the
interested zone, where images are captured and consequently processed. Classification includes image
sensors, image preprocessing, object detection, object segmentation, feature extraction and object
classification. Classification system consists of database that contains predefined patterns that
compares with detected object to classify in to proper category. Image classification is an important
and challenging task in various application domains, including biomedical imaging, biometry, video
surveillance, vehicle navigation, industrial visual inspection, robot navigation, and remote sensing.

Benjamin Franklin s Plan For Self Improvement
Benjamin Franklin s plan for self improvement was quite a complex one. He knew that he had certain
areas of work in his life that he wanted to better. Among these areas were temperance, silence, order,
resolution, frugality, industry, sincerity, justice, moderation, cleanliness, tranquility, chastity, and
humility. His take on silence was to, Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling
conversation. For tranquility; it was, Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or
unavoidable. Lastly, he looked at helping his efficiency with frugality, which he saw as, Make no
expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing. Benjamin Franklin s plans for self

Franklin defined this as, Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable. This went
along great with silence. Franklin was basically adopting the idea of cutting all unnecessary things out
of his life, in order to make it more effective in general. His virtue of tranquility also benefited society
greatly. Like silence, this gave less of a chance of uproar when things happened. If Franklin acted as if
small things were such a big deal, then it would lead everyone else in society to overreact as well. If
he acted as if nothing was wrong when small accidents happened, then it would take stress from the
communities as well. Because he decided that tranquility was a virtue to impose upon himself, it
affected society positively, because they no longer needed to be worried about every tiny thing that

War Luigi Pirandello Analysis
Is it honourable to die fighting for one s country? Luigi Pirandello assesses this in his short story, War,
and Wilfred Owen discusses this in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. But which one does a better job
at describing the emotional impact of armed conflicts? Perhaps it is Pirandello s portrayal of parental
love, or Owen s portrayal of emotional scars. Nevertheless, there is one story that relates more: War is
a far better example of the emotional impact of war than Dulce et Decorum Est.
The short story War explores war s emotional impact through parental love. This type of love is first
explored when the Italian passengers are awaiting a connecting line at the train station (Pirandello, 1)
and are talking and grieving over their sons who have gone to war. The subject is first brought up
when they explain that they have sons at the front (Pirandello, 2) and are extremely worried about
their children; a true exemplification that they care for their children immensely. Furthermore, a
woman is pitied by war (Pirandello, 2) and a man [breaks] into harrowing, heart breaking,
uncontrollable sobs (Pirandello, 5) over the death of his son. Despite the fact that some of the parents
feel that they should laugh. . . or at least thank God (Pirandello, 4) that their sons are dying
honourably, deep down, they feel the pain and grief related to the thought of potentially losing their
children. This is a very common feeling associated with the idea of war; many

The Family Tree Of Zoroastrianism, Judaism, And Christianity
This week we read about the family tree of Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and Christianity. These three
religions offer a beautiful perspective of evolutionary religious development, while still representing
independence of faith way.
Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion from Ancient Iran with a current following of 124,000 to 190,000
practitioners left, although it is believed that for roughly 1000 years it was the reigning faith practice
of the Iranian empire. Zoroastrianism was founded by Zarathushtra, a trained Indo Iranian priest and
mystical seeker. Zoroastrianism was possibly the first monotheistic religion and known in Iran as
Mazdayasna the worship of the Wise Lord, Ahura Mazda (1). The God of Zoroastrianism was Ahura
Mazda the creator god , (1) Ahura Mazda was surrounded by angelic presences manifesting six
attributes of the divine (1). It is believed that these attributes were separate deities at one point and that
Zarathushtra molded these to fit hit monotheistic belief system. While Zoroastrianism greatly
influenced Judaism and Christianity (as well as Hinduism), yet ritualistically the practices differ such
as The devout will often dip their finger into water, apply it to their eyes and forehead...it is a great sin
to pollute water...Zoroastrians regard the natural world with profound reverence and are taught from
childhood to avoid defiling it.(2) As previously mentioned Zoroastrianism greatly influenced a
multitude of religions, one of which was

Although both films begin slowly Saving Private Ryan gets started a lot quicker and has a faster pace
throughout the whole film.
After the man has collapsed to the floor the camera zooms into his eyes and the scene changes. It
focuses on another mans face with the caption Dog Green sector Omaha Beach June 6th 1944. This is
a flashback and a complete contrast from the cemetery. It s very loud and the colours are grey and
dark. The camera then focuses on the man s shaking hands and the men around him who are clearly
nervous, praying or being sick; Spiel burg is determined to show from the start that the war is not
glamorous or a game. You see how stormy it is and how many boats there are approaching the beach.
Bullets start straight away and people are killed before they have even got off the boats. When they
start going in to the water the camera does a number of underwater shots whilst bullets fire past them.
It is as if the camera is seeing through the eyes of one of the soldiers, making you feel very involved
in the struggle. The water becomes clouded with blood and at one point the camera bobs up and down
in the water, seeming like a drowning man. All of this adds to making the viewer feel like they are
right there with them making it quite personal.
When they get on the beach it focuses again on John Miller who

primary source for stress, forty three percent of students viewed tests as a primary stressor, and thirty
three percent said the pressure of keeping grades up is a primary stressor. Only one percent of students
said that homework wasn t stressful. Students sometimes give up sleep just to finish homework.
Losing sleep over homework is a negative effect on the child s ability to understand the material being
taught and they are more likely to struggle on assignments and tests being given to them on the next
day. Children losing sleep also affects their brain activity. If a child doesn t have at least eight hours of
sleep at night, he/she will be less prepared for the day ahead. Also if a child loses sleep, due to
finishing homework, it is very likely they will fall asleep in class the next day and not learn the new
material being taught then they will not be able to understand and do the homework that it given that
day or do assignments and exams over that material. Without sleep and rest the human body and brain
will not function properly. It is very important for a child to get enough sleep and not stress over

stands for Islamic state in Iraq and Syria. Members of Isis were first a part of al Qaeda, then in 2013
became its own group. This paper will answer: How was Isis formed, and why is it the way it is
today? Under its former name Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), it was formed in April 2013,
growing out of al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI). The organization is led by Abu Bakr al Baghdadi. Little is
known about him, but it is believed he was born in Samarra, north of Baghdad, in 1971 and joined the
insurgency that erupted in Iraq soon after the 2003 US led invasion. In 2010 he emerged as the leader
of al Qaeda in Iraq, one of the groups that later became Isis. Baghdadi is regarded as a battlefield
commander and tactician, which analysts say makes his group more attractive to young jihadists than
al Qaeda, which is led by Ayman al Zawahiri, an Islamic theologian. IS claims to have fighters from
the UK, France, Germany and other European countries, as well as the US, the Arab world and the
Caucasus (The Islamic State militant group). This quote explains how Isis was formed and how it was
first organized. One of its main leaders includes a man named Abu Bakr al Baghdadi. He also tries

Miranda Warnings Essay
Miranda warnings can render a subsequent confession admissible if sufficient time has passed to purge
the taint of the illegal seizure. (Brown v. Illinois (1975) 422 U.S. 604 (even if subsequent statements
were voluntarily under the Fifth Amendment, it must be a sufficient act of free will to purge the
primary taint).) Moreover, if a defendant is unlawfully detained, incriminating or inculpatory
statements stemming from custodial interrogation are inadmissible, even if the defendant was
Mirandized and a valid waiver was obtained prior to interrogation. (Brown, supra, 422 U.S. 604 (in

In this case, Meyers was subject to an unreasonable search and seizure in violation of the Fourth
Amendment rights when he was unlawfully detained and searched by the staircase without sufficient
reasonable suspicion. Based on items seized during the unlawful search of his person, and statements
made thereof, officers placed Meyers under arrest and transported him to the police station for further
questioning. Only then was Meyers advised of his Miranda rights, which is insufficient to purge the
taint of his initial detention.
Although Mirandized, officers did not secure a valid waiver to continue questioning Meyers.
Moreover, the time period between his initial detention, arrest, interrogation, and alleged consent to
search was only a matter of hours, with Meyers in continuous custody and without an intervening
circumstance. Furthermore, Meyers statements were obtained without a valid warning and waiver of

Alien Acts Dbq
John Adams and many other Federalists alongside him brought in a new law into play during 1798
that would change the way many Americans viewed the government. Adams introduced the Alien and
Sedition Acts to Congress while he was the former President of the United States. The way of these
Acts were simple, the first being an Alien Act which main focus was to make the United States more
secure from alien (foreign) spies and domestic traitors(Citation). The second Act was the Sedition Act,
which made it illegal for anyone to express any false scandals. Overall these Acts had a great impact,
not only on citizens but also Congress itself. In turn because of these Acts, the American political
debates during the early 1800s was greatly impacted. These Alien and Sedition Acts greatly affected
and influenced the people and government of America in the late 18th century and early 19th century.

What Mysterious Effect Does Calcium Found In Every Milk...
What mysterious effect does calcium found in every milk carton have? The answer to this question
will be explored throughout the essay. Today, there are many people who want to know the numerous
benefits of drinking milk. So what exactly are they? Extensive research has shown that milk is healthy
for humans and contains very important nutrients and vitamins, so everyone should try to drink milk.
In addition to the nutrition, milk is vital to growing children and even to those that have digestion
issues with milk. As it s well known, milk contains many nutrients like calcium and vitamins A and D.
According to the authors at ProCon.org, [m]ilk is an excellent source of calcium, which can help build
and maintain strong bones and teeth (ProCon.org). Calcium and vitamins A and D help to build strong
bones, so humans should drink milk. For example, if a child drinks lots of milk while growing up,
they will grow up into an adult with a strong bone structure and lower their risk of bone disease, such
as osteoporosis. For a growing child, milk has many kinds of nutrients that are important and needed.

Political Campaign Rhetoric
Political Campaign Rhetoric
In 2004 the United States of America held a presidential election as it does every four years.
Throughout the process, from primary to convention, from the debates to Election Day, both the
candidates and the media relied on rhetoric to influence the thoughts of the electorate. Because of the
close results of the 2000 election and the bitter court battle that followed, the rhetoric of the
campaigns of both major candidates in 2004 was stronger and more focused than before. To show the
uses of this rhetoric and its effects on the public through the media, several topics are discussed
within. First, the language used by the candidates, followed by a discussion of the political
conventions and a look at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Considering the pre rational nature of religious affiliation for many Americans, then, we can see how
Bush s rhetoric concerning values and faith was not unlike propaganda, which seeks to short circuit
rational thought in order to illicit some desired response from the audience. By only discussing values
on the most superficial level, Bush was able to use people s faith to gain their support, when after
further debate and consideration they may have found that they did not agree with his stance.
In contrast with the typical conservative appeal to people of faith used by President Bush is the typical
liberal appeal to the class consciousness of the working class used by former vice presidential
candidate John Edwards. On the campaign trail he spoke of two Americas: people who are set for life
and do not work, and those who scrape by living paycheck to paycheck (Miller 2005). According to
Miller, Edwards intends for the audience to imagine the first as idle aristocrats. Considering the
semantics of the language used, the term set for life, describing the non worker, and the vivid imagery
of the wage earner struggling to survive form a sharp contrast that is intended to convince the working
class individual of two things: firstly, that they are in conflict

The Importance Of The Purpose Of The Constitution
Section A: General Understanding of the Purpose of the Constitution The Constitution had many
important purposes and ideas. One of those ideas was establishing justice: the act of the government
creating fair laws, establishing freedom, liberty, and equality. It is very evident throughout the
Constitution that this goal has been met. For example, Full Faith and Credit explains that states cannot
discriminate against other citizens. The Constitution states, Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each
state to the public, Acts, Records, and Judicial Proceedings of every other state (Article 4 Section 1
Clause 1). This is an example of a fair law because it explains states have to respect the judicial ruling
of other states. A common example of Full Faith and Credit is a driver s license. If a random teenager
gets a driver s license in Illinois, Wisconsin has to respect that license, even though one has to be older
to obtain a driver s license. This is fair because Illinois ruled that this citizen is eligible for the right to
drive. Another example of the Constitution establishing justice occurs in the first amendment in the
Bill of Rights. According to the First Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a
redress of grievances. This amendment is

Aestheticism In Wilde s Lady Gertrude Chiltern
Lady Gertrude Chiltern Correspondingly, Wilde utilises Aestheticism to characterise Lady Gertrude
Chiltern dissimilar to Lord Goring and Mrs Cheveley and as a touchstone of moral stability (Bose,
1999) to indicate her restraints towards the model upper class standards. Hence, Wilde undermines the
Victorian English notions, particularly of marriage, as exaggeratingly hypocritical and non naturalistic
(HornychovĂĄ, 2010) as it led to Lady Chiltern s disillusion and disappointment from her morally rigid
admiration towards her husband s façade. Consequently, Wildes creates dramatic irony into Lady
Chiltern s dialogue and develops her distaste towards Mrs Cheveley. Primarily through dramatic irony
established from Lady Chiltern s prudent dialogue, Wilde depicts her stagnant pride highly tuned from
societal conventions to dramatise the hypocrisy of Victorian English strictures as it negatively impacts
the relationship between Lady Chiltern and Sir Chiltern. In Act 1 Scene 6, Sir Chiltern hints at his
pastime indiscretions to observe Lady Chiltern s reaction where her replying dialogue stresses that one
s past is what one is and that would be the only way people should be judged (1.6) and thus ironically
conveys her Victorian English morality when the audience already have knowledge about Sir Chiltern
s political misdemeanours. This is further noted in her dialogue where she will love him always (1.6)
but only because he will always be worthy of her love (1.6) rather than

Analysis of Elizabeth Bishops the Moose
Elizabeth Bishop s The Moose is a narrative poem of 168 lines. Its twenty eight six line stanzas are
not rigidly structured. Lines vary in length from four to eight syllables, but those of five or six
syllables predominate. The pattern of stresses is lax enough almost to blur the distinction between
verse and prose; the rhythm is that of a low keyed speaking voice hovering over the descriptive
details. The eyewitness account is meticulous and restrained.
The poem concerns a bus traveling to Boston through the landscape and towns of New Brunswick.
While driving through the woods, the bus stops because a moose has wandered onto the road. The
appearance of the animal interrupts the peaceful hum of elderly passengers voices. ... Show more

Thus the first part, devoted to the landscape, is richly descriptive, replete with qualifying epithets that,
toward the end (in line 75 and in line 81), come in by threes, like beads on a string. In the second part,
dealing with the passengers plight, learned, latinate words such as divagation, auditory, hallucination,
eternity, and acceptance signal the presence of the narrator commentator. In the third part—the one
reserved for the moose—epithets return. In the climactic twenty fourth stanza, the most distinctly
poetic devices—explicit comparisons—are bestowed on the protagonist: high as a church,/ homely as a
house. Moreover, the four additional epithets lavished on the moose contribute to the grandeur of its
appearance: towering, antlerless, and grand, otherworldly.
By careful calibration and timing of her tropes, Bishop succeeds superbly in achieving her ends.
Contrast is attained by her control over all compartments of language, and her austere, restrained tone
and strategy of deferral and understatement are dramatically effective.
Themes and Meanings The Moose is ultimately about the human need to be purged and, if possible,
cured of selfhood. Self absorption or narcissism is not only a passing malaise afflicting teenagers.
Older people regard themselves in the mirror of their

suspenseful movies and novels go, they would probably pick C. People are able to pick out certain
aspects of a novel or movie and know that something bad is about to happen. Same as in the movie
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, originally written by Seth Grahame Smith, and then produced into a
movie by Burr Steers. Vampires and zombies, such as in these novels and movies, would make
someone scared, mostly because of how strange and different they are from us, also known as The
Other. The ideas of suspense, monstrous or scary beings, and The Other shown throughout Pride and
Prejudice and Zombies were all influenced by the classic novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker.
The idea of suspense is represented differently depending on what the movie or novel is about. Movies

Women Play A Special Role
I believe that women play a special role in religious life . Firstly, the dictionary definition of a role is
the function assumed or part played by a person or thing in a particular situation . So a special role in
the context of the question is an important part played by women in religious life. This is very true in
relation to Christianity and Judaism. In Christianity I will look at important women saints in the
religion and the leadership roles that women can play in the church. In Judaism I will look at the
importance of women in the faith and the special roles they play in the home and the synagogue and
Rosh Chodesh. Important figures like saints play a special role in religious life because they often give
an image of what people should and should not do and give a guideline on how to be like them in
Christianity. A very important woman in Christianity is Mary. She is the mother of Christ and she is
unique as she was chosen by God to look after Jesus because she was free of original sin (the tendency
to evil supposedly innate in all human beings, held to be inherited from Adam and Eve in the Garden
of Eden, online definition). Mary can be called Saint Mary , The Virgin Mary and The Blessed Virgin
Mary which shows her reverence in Christianity. This has made Mary a role model for many
Christians as they aspire to live without sin and please God as she did. Another key woman in
Christianity is Mary Magdalene. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the

The Glies In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
TCA 1 To start off, Golding s purpose is shaped through theme. His purpose is to show people are
evil. According to the passage it says, She was black and pink; and the great bladder of her belly was
fringed with a row of piglets that slept or burrowed and squeaked (Golding 1). This statement shows
that all of the British boys, except Simon, attacks a mother pig who runs in the clearing. Simon
watches all of the boys literally killing the mother pig. This is the climactic part of the novel because
the boys completely lost their innocence. In doing so, the boys find pleasure and it represents no
civilization left. The slaughter of innocence shows that the boys can not go back to civilization.
Another example from the passage states that, Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted
over his hands. The sow collapsed under them and they were heavy and fulfilled upon her. The
butterflies still danced, preoccupied in the center of the clearing (Golding 12). This sentence shows
that all the boys turn into savages and that Jack, the boy that adores hunting and killing just for the fun
of it, influences the boys into enjoying rubbing the blood all over their bodies. The boys kill the
mother pig and simultaneously cheer and laugh. All in all, symbolically, when the boys put the pig s
head on a stick, it represents the darkness and evil within all humanity. The human s actions about
savagery v.s. the order of human civilization. Adding on, Golding s purpose of showing

Persuasive Essay On Breastfeeding
Women in this world have a right to bear children and take care of them. As a new parent, there are
millions of questions, worries, and decisions one deals with throughout the whole child s life. When a
child is first born, a mother has to decide whether or not to breastfeed or formula feed. The nutrition a
baby receives in the first months of life is what determines if the baby has a good or bad start. Women
should breastfeed their children because breastfeeding boosts chances of success for their child, allows
their baby to receive natural immunity from antibodies, mothers are less likely to develop diseases
such as cancers or diabetes, and breastfeeding stimulates oxytocin to promote bonding between
mother and child. Breastfeeding is the best choice for a baby.
The natural process of breastfeeding is the most beneficial for the baby and many studies have
concluded that breastfeeding boosts chances of success. In Brazil, a group of doctors took on a project
to see if there was a difference from a breastfed child and a formula fed one. These doctors randomly
picked out more than 3,000 babies and studied them from the time they were born until they turned
thirty years old (Breast Feeding). Once these babies reach thirty, they were given an IQ test that
concluded, the subjects who were breast fed for 12 months or more had a higher IQ than those who
were breast fed for less than one month. The difference in IQ was 3.76 points (Horta). Not only does
breastfeeding have an

It is just the policy to set the standards high. Another interesting example: A male employee was fired by his employer because he refused to work at night ( Small Business Encyclopedia 2002). This company had a policy saying that women did not have to work at night because the company was located in a high crime area. The male employees had to work the night shifts for the company, while the women employees did not. The male employee in question filed a suit under Title VII against his employer claiming sexual discrimination. The company claimed that several female employees would quit if they were forced to work at night. The company also claimed the policy was a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ). This case is interesting because BFOQ can be used as a defense to allow certain discrimination. BFOQ is an exception provided by Title VII for jobs that require a specific religion, sex, national origin, or age as a reasonable necessity for normal operations of a business. Social, Political, and Economical Causes of the Mexican Revolution There were an abundance of social, political, and economical factors that led to the Mexican Revolution. Socially, there was a great displacement in the treatment between the elite and rich classes and the poor classes. Politically, what once started out as a Republic, after they had won their independence, had transitioned into a tyrannical dictatorship. Economically, Mexico was over dependent on loans from foreign nations such as France, Spain, England, and The United State of America. AFTERMATH OF WAR OF INDEPENDENCE Mexico had gained its independence from Spain in the year of 1821, although a substantial amount of damage had been inflicted as Mexico was in disorder and decay. The economy was in shambles, as Mexico owed money to The United States of America, France, and England. Also, the social classes experienced a drop off in upper class citizens as every Spaniard was forced out of Mexico after the war for independence. Economically, many industries such as mining, textile, and others became useless, as there was lack of production, because of the absence of the Spaniards. The effects of war were very visible throughout all of Mexico as villages were left ruined, roads were neglected, and about 15 30 percent of the male populations were unemployed. ... Like silence, this gave less of a chance of uproar when things happened. If Franklin acted as if small things were such a big deal, then it would lead everyone else in society to overreact as well. • 14. War Luigi Pirandello Analysis Is it honourable to die fighting for one s country? Luigi Pirandello assesses this in his short story, War, and Wilfred Owen discusses this in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. But which one does a better job at describing the emotional impact of armed conflicts? Perhaps it is Pirandello s portrayal of parental love, or Owen s portrayal of emotional scars. Nevertheless, there is one story that relates more: War is a far better example of the emotional impact of war than Dulce et Decorum Est. The short story War explores war s emotional impact through parental love. This type of love is first explored when the Italian passengers are awaiting a connecting line at the train station (Pirandello, 1) and are talking and grieving over their sons who have gone to war. The subject is first brought up when they explain that they have sons at the front (Pirandello, 2) and are extremely worried about their children; a true exemplification that they care for their children immensely. Furthermore, a woman is pitied by war (Pirandello, 2) and a man [breaks] into harrowing, heart breaking, uncontrollable sobs (Pirandello, 5) over the death of his son. Despite the fact that some of the parents feel that they should laugh. . . or at least thank God (Pirandello, 4) that their sons are dying honourably, deep down, they feel the pain and grief related to the thought of potentially losing their children. This is a very common feeling associated with the idea of war; many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion from Ancient Iran with a current following of 124,000 to 190,000 practitioners left, although it is believed that for roughly 1000 years it was the reigning faith practice of the Iranian empire. Zoroastrianism was founded by Zarathushtra, a trained Indo Iranian priest and mystical seeker. The God of Zoroastrianism was Ahura Mazda the creator god , (1) Ahura Mazda was surrounded by angelic presences manifesting six attributes of the divine (1). It is believed that these attributes were separate deities at one point and that Zarathushtra molded these to fit hit monotheistic belief system. • 27. Political Campaign Rhetoric Political Campaign Rhetoric In 2004 the United States of America held a presidential election as it does every four years. Throughout the process, from primary to convention, from the debates to Election Day, both the candidates and the media relied on rhetoric to influence the thoughts of the electorate. Because of the close results of the 2000 election and the bitter court battle that followed, the rhetoric of the campaigns of both major candidates in 2004 was stronger and more focused than before. To show the uses of this rhetoric and its effects on the public through the media, several topics are discussed within. First, the language used by the candidates, followed by a discussion of the political conventions and a look at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Considering the pre rational nature of religious affiliation for many Americans, then, we can see how Bush s rhetoric concerning values and faith was not unlike propaganda, which seeks to short circuit rational thought in order to illicit some desired response from the audience. By only discussing values on the most superficial level, Bush was able to use people s faith to gain their support, when after further debate and consideration they may have found that they did not agree with his stance. In contrast with the typical conservative appeal to people of faith used by President Bush is the typical liberal appeal to the class consciousness of the working class used by former vice presidential candidate John Edwards. On the campaign trail he spoke of two Americas: people who are set for life and do not work, and those who scrape by living paycheck to paycheck (Miller 2005). According to Miller, Edwards intends for the audience to imagine the first as idle aristocrats. Considering the semantics of the language used, the term set for life, describing the non worker, and the vivid imagery of the wage earner struggling to survive form a sharp contrast that is intended to convince the working class individual of two things: firstly, that they are in conflict ... • 28. The Importance Of The Purpose Of The Constitution Section A: General Understanding of the Purpose of the Constitution The Constitution had many important purposes and ideas. One of those ideas was establishing justice: the act of the government creating fair laws, establishing freedom, liberty, and equality. It is very evident throughout the Constitution that this goal has been met. For example, Full Faith and Credit explains that states cannot discriminate against other citizens. The Constitution states, Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each state to the public, Acts, Records, and Judicial Proceedings of every other state (Article 4 Section 1 Clause 1). This is an example of a fair law because it explains states have to respect the judicial ruling of other states. A common example of Full Faith and Credit is a driver s license. If a random teenager gets a driver s license in Illinois, Wisconsin has to respect that license, even though one has to be older to obtain a driver s license. This is fair because Illinois ruled that this citizen is eligible for the right to drive. Another example of the Constitution establishing justice occurs in the first amendment in the Bill of Rights. According to the First Amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. This amendment is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 30. Aestheticism In Wilde s Lady Gertrude Chiltern Lady Gertrude Chiltern Correspondingly, Wilde utilises Aestheticism to characterise Lady Gertrude Chiltern dissimilar to Lord Goring and Mrs Cheveley and as a touchstone of moral stability (Bose, 1999) to indicate her restraints towards the model upper class standards. Hence, Wilde undermines the Victorian English notions, particularly of marriage, as exaggeratingly hypocritical and non naturalistic (HornychovĂĄ, 2010) as it led to Lady Chiltern s disillusion and disappointment from her morally rigid admiration towards her husband s façade. Consequently, Wildes creates dramatic irony into Lady Chiltern s dialogue and develops her distaste towards Mrs Cheveley. Primarily through dramatic irony established from Lady Chiltern s prudent dialogue, Wilde depicts her stagnant pride highly tuned from societal conventions to dramatise the hypocrisy of Victorian English strictures as it negatively impacts the relationship between Lady Chiltern and Sir Chiltern. In Act 1 Scene 6, Sir Chiltern hints at his pastime indiscretions to observe Lady Chiltern s reaction where her replying dialogue stresses that one s past is what one is and that would be the only way people should be judged (1.6) and thus ironically conveys her Victorian English morality when the audience already have knowledge about Sir Chiltern s political misdemeanours. This is further noted in her dialogue where she will love him always (1.6) but only because he will always be worthy of her love (1.6) rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Analysis of Elizabeth Bishops the Moose Elizabeth Bishop s The Moose is a narrative poem of 168 lines. Its twenty eight six line stanzas are not rigidly structured. Lines vary in length from four to eight syllables, but those of five or six syllables predominate. The pattern of stresses is lax enough almost to blur the distinction between verse and prose; the rhythm is that of a low keyed speaking voice hovering over the descriptive details. The eyewitness account is meticulous and restrained. The poem concerns a bus traveling to Boston through the landscape and towns of New Brunswick. While driving through the woods, the bus stops because a moose has wandered onto the road. The appearance of the animal interrupts the peaceful hum of elderly passengers voices. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the first part, devoted to the landscape, is richly descriptive, replete with qualifying epithets that, toward the end (in line 75 and in line 81), come in by threes, like beads on a string. In the second part, dealing with the passengers plight, learned, latinate words such as divagation, auditory, hallucination, eternity, and acceptance signal the presence of the narrator commentator. In the third part—the one reserved for the moose—epithets return. In the climactic twenty fourth stanza, the most distinctly poetic devices—explicit comparisons—are bestowed on the protagonist: high as a church,/ homely as a house. Moreover, the four additional epithets lavished on the moose contribute to the grandeur of its appearance: towering, antlerless, and grand, otherworldly. By careful calibration and timing of her tropes, Bishop succeeds superbly in achieving her ends. Contrast is attained by her control over all compartments of language, and her austere, restrained tone and strategy of deferral and understatement are dramatically effective. Themes and Meanings The Moose is ultimately about the human need to be purged and, if possible, cured of selfhood. Self absorption or narcissism is not only a passing malaise afflicting teenagers. Suddenly, there is eerie and suspenseful music playing in the back of the character s mind and they think, What in the world is that? They think A. It must be a song they heard a long time ago, B. Some cute and fuzzy cartoon characters are about to come out and start singing, or C. They re about to run into a scary monster or murder. Odds are, if the watcher know how suspenseful movies and novels go, they would probably pick C. People are able to pick out certain aspects of a novel or movie and know that something bad is about to happen. Same as in the movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, originally written by Seth Grahame Smith, and then produced into a movie by Burr Steers. Vampires and zombies, such as in these novels and movies, would make someone scared, mostly because of how strange and different they are from us, also known as The Other. The ideas of suspense, monstrous or scary beings, and The Other shown throughout Pride and Prejudice and Zombies were all influenced by the classic novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker. The idea of suspense is represented differently depending on what the movie or novel is about. Movies that have characters that are considered to be fictional would more likely have stronger suspense than a movie that has characters that were living in real times. • 38. Women Play A Special Role I believe that women play a special role in religious life . Firstly, the dictionary definition of a role is the function assumed or part played by a person or thing in a particular situation . So a special role in the context of the question is an important part played by women in religious life. This is very true in relation to Christianity and Judaism. In Christianity I will look at important women saints in the religion and the leadership roles that women can play in the church. In Judaism I will look at the importance of women in the faith and the special roles they play in the home and the synagogue and Rosh Chodesh. Important figures like saints play a special role in religious life because they often give an image of what people should and should not do and give a guideline on how to be like them in Christianity. A very important woman in Christianity is Mary. She is the mother of Christ and she is unique as she was chosen by God to look after Jesus because she was free of original sin (the tendency to evil supposedly innate in all human beings, held to be inherited from Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, online definition). Mary can be called Saint Mary , The Virgin Mary and The Blessed Virgin Mary which shows her reverence in Christianity. This has made Mary a role model for many Christians as they aspire to live without sin and please God as she did. Another key woman in Christianity is Mary Magdalene. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Glies In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding TCA 1 To start off, Golding s purpose is shaped through theme. His purpose is to show people are evil. According to the passage it says, She was black and pink; and the great bladder of her belly was fringed with a row of piglets that slept or burrowed and squeaked (Golding 1). This statement shows that all of the British boys, except Simon, attacks a mother pig who runs in the clearing. Simon watches all of the boys literally killing the mother pig. This is the climactic part of the novel because the boys completely lost their innocence. In doing so, the boys find pleasure and it represents no civilization left. The slaughter of innocence shows that the boys can not go back to civilization. Another example from the passage states that, Then Jack found the throat and the hot blood spouted over his hands. The sow collapsed under them and they were heavy and fulfilled upon her. The butterflies still danced, preoccupied in the center of the clearing (Golding 12). This sentence shows that all the boys turn into savages and that Jack, the boy that adores hunting and killing just for the fun of it, influences the boys into enjoying rubbing the blood all over their bodies. The boys kill the mother pig and simultaneously cheer and laugh. All in all, symbolically, when the boys put the pig s head on a stick, it represents the darkness and evil within all humanity. The human s actions about savagery v.s. the order of human civilization. Adding on, Golding s purpose of showing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Persuasive Essay On Breastfeeding Women in this world have a right to bear children and take care of them. As a new parent, there are millions of questions, worries, and decisions one deals with throughout the whole child s life. When a child is first born, a mother has to decide whether or not to breastfeed or formula feed. The nutrition a baby receives in the first months of life is what determines if the baby has a good or bad start. Women should breastfeed their children because breastfeeding boosts chances of success for their child, allows their baby to receive natural immunity from antibodies, mothers are less likely to develop diseases such as cancers or diabetes, and breastfeeding stimulates oxytocin to promote bonding between mother and child. Breastfeeding is the best choice for a baby. The natural process of breastfeeding is the most beneficial for the baby and many studies have concluded that breastfeeding boosts chances of success. In Brazil, a group of doctors took on a project to see if there was a difference from a breastfed child and a formula fed one. These doctors randomly picked out more than 3,000 babies and studied them from the time they were born until they turned thirty years old (Breast Feeding). Once these babies reach thirty, they were given an IQ test that concluded, the subjects who were breast fed for 12 months or more had a higher IQ than those who were breast fed for less than one month. The difference in IQ was 3.76 points (Horta). Not only does breastfeeding have an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
