Syrian Refugees Should Be Banned
Why should I as an African American be alarmed by the Muslim Ban or welcome the Syrian
Refugees into the United States? Many people fear America only getting worse under Trump s
administration, so if that was the case would these Muslim majority countries accept us African
Americans? Keep in mind that the United Statesis not the only country that has rejected refugees
from Syria in recent years. Numerous countries in Europe and the Middle Easthave refused to
accept what would undoubtedly become a burden to any country. In my opinion this is not a
Muslim ban as the media like to refer to it as. There are countless factors involved and it does not
simply boil down to religion. If this order was based on religion, then the visa ban would... Show

The UK and other wealthy nations in Europe have resettled less than 2% of Syrian refugees.
Only around 5,500 Syrians had been granted asylum or refugee status in Britain since the conflict
began in 2011. The United States should not be criticized for doing what every other country
should be doing, which is looking out for our interests. Especially when other wealthy nations and
even majority Muslim neighbors to Syria refuse to accept Syrian refugees. I know this is might be
an unpopular opinion or viewpoint but I was not as outraged as other African Americans about this
executive order. There is this rhetoric that I should be equally as alarmed as the groups that are
being affected by this policy. That while it may not affect me directly, somehow after targeting
illegal immigrants and Muslim immigrants, African Americans are next in line . This does not
make much sense to me because in my opinion, being Black in America means we are always
under attack. This has been nonstop since my ancestors step foot off the slave ship, and throughout
the years both the Hispanic and Arab/middle eastern communities have been silent. Why should I
try to defend those who never cared to

Transnational Cinema Essay
As cultural identity being questioned in global screen due to the influences of transnational cinema
and Diasporas in different places, this clip question further the possibilities in future transnational
cinema. Through the emergence of cinema styles, all films are to be considered transnational. This
essay will argue that transnational cinema could be emerging to a new level in the filmindustry. The
clip provided with the essay explores the potential of transnational films with the context of films
studied included in this subject.
As Ezra and Rowden argues, the key to transnationalism is the recognition of the decline of
national sovereignty as a regulatory force in global coexistence. The impossibility of assigning a

Hess and Zimmermann mention that conventional categories have blurred and there s demands for
new political and aesthetic responses in transnational cinema (John Hess 2006). These transnational
films I believe would be growing significantly in the film industry as a part of film history.
As seen in most third transnational films from Asia countries, popular cultural products criss cross
cultural borders everyday therefore these cultures remain circulating in transnational cinema
(Aquilia 2006). The power of transnational cinema could not be ignored as global screen reflects a
transnational cultural exchange (Aquilia 2006). My clip shows that those sections of films we
studied consisting crossover boundaries of actors and actresses, overseas settings and different
cultures portrayed. Athique also argues that non Indians and people with little Indian history
background found enjoyment in the mixture of Bombay films (Athique 2008). Thus, transnational
cinema in both ways depicted the cultural identity audiences can relate to, as well as transnational
culture exchange among the globe.
Transnational cinema is a developing concept. It changes alongside the film industry. The ever
increasing of Diasporas and ever developing cultural identity help shape transnational cinema.
Transnational cinema is an emergence of cultural phenomenon and it develops though time. The

Essay On Your Daughter Dances Flamenco
A red and black swirl, that s how it all started. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother and
I were standing in line at a frame shop. There was a girl with a black leotard and a red flowy skirt
standing in front of us, with her mother. Your daughter dances Flamenco, right? Where does she
take classes? My mother asked the girl s mother. Next thing I remember, I was in a dancestudio,
staring at a group of dancers who seemed to be flying across the room, all wearing long skirts
and dance shoes. I couldn t take my eyes off of them. I didn t know it right then, but fourteen
years later, I would be able to dance just like any of those dancers I was staring at with dreamy
eyes. Practicing dance, preparing dance plays and performances... Show more content on

I can relate dancing to playing in two different ways. The first one, of course, whenever I am
dancing I can certainly feel like I am playing a game. By this I don t mean that I don t take dance
seriously. For the contrary, I enjoy dance to a level where I feel just like when I am playing a
videogame. Each new step I have to learn, represents a new challenge. Once I am able to
correctly perform said step, I have to keep practicing until I can perform it perfectly, then I can
move on to the next step. Once a choreography is complete, we, as dancers, are supposed to
rehearse it over and over again until we feel as confident as we can in order to be able to perform
it in the theatre. Reaching that point for me is like defeating the boss in a Mario Bros. game. One
can say the turtles, owls, and other enemies in the game could be represented by blisters, twisted
ankles, mistakes committed, and some other challenges we may encounter while trying to master a
piece of choreography.
The other way I can relate dance to play, which is kind of the most obvious one, are dance plays.

A History of Product Placement in Film and Television
A History of Product Placement in Film and Television
Peter Rush Product placement in the marketing world has become more and more evident in the
past few decades. More specifically, product placement in the movie industry has been one of the
most successful ways to advertise products. Oftentimes, products are associated with a film, or vice
versa. Such is the case with Reese s Pieces candies and Stephen Spielberg s film, E.T . While it is
a very expensive way of companies to advertise their brands, it is one that pays off immensely if
executed properly. Although it seems as if product placement in film and television is a relatively
new way of marketing products to the public, it has been around as early as the late ... Show more

But although some of the Edison films were obvious offers of products and services, product
placements as subtle efforts to influence audience attitude and behavior became a specialty of
Edison s. His catalog listed hundreds of travelogues, such as trips to the Far West, Niagara Falls,
and Hawaii, along with dozens of railroad films. The business of product placement had begun. In
the United States, cinematic art and business intertwined in the 1910s and 1920s as manufacturers
and government distributed advertising films that combined drama and commerce to the small
town circuit. Producers of these films included International Harvester, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, and the YMCA. From 1914 to 1921, Ford Motor Company created a series of
newsreels titled Ford Animated Weekly and Ford Educational Weekly. A typical serial included
Model T races and news footage that sometimes incorporated Henry Ford meeting with
government officials. These advertising films were distributed at low cost to exhibitors and found
an early approval in small towns, with Ford claiming a viewership of 3 million per week (Journal
of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 2006). Not only did the product placement within the movie
help to reimburse both parties of the agreement, but the American films initiated a worldwide trade
in American products as well.

Ethnic Groups in Pakistan
Since its birth, Pakistan has been home to various multi ethnic societies and groups in all its
provinces. The activities of these groups have had varying impact on the political history of
Pakistan. This paper analyses the impact of the Sindhi ethnic society (also known as the Jeeya
Sindh movement ) on the political history of Pakistan during the 1970s. I then provide a critique of
the government s response to the demands of these movements and then suggest my opinion as to
how the government should have reacted so as to have a better outcome.
At the creation of Pakistan, a large number Mohajirs migrated from India and settled in to Sindh.
From 1947 to 1951 nearly 1 million Mohajirs settled into Sindh (Rais, Rasul Buksh). They had also

transform into political parties. This had to different outcomes, groups with similar interests joined
together to become stronger parties. During this process they also learned to co operate with each
other and settle differences within themselves. The other outcome of formation of groups was that
due to difference in interests of different groups, political parties could not work together hence the
country landed into inconsistent leadership. There was also alienation due to large majority of one
community. Above all these differences in parties lead to unequal development for different groups
in fields of government jobs, education and urbanization.
The states response to the Sindhi nationalist movement has been mixed. Z.A Bhutto s introduction
of the quota system to safeguard the interests of the Sindhis in my opinion was biased as it
aggravated intra provincial ethnic divides in Pakistan. In my opinion, the government shouldn t
have imposed a quota, it instead should have aided the Sindhis in forms of educational institutions
and training so that they could compete with the Mohajirs in a fair manner. As the competition
would have been fair, it would have been unlikely for the Mohajirs to start a movement of their own.
Another main mistake by Z.A Bhutto was the introduction of Urdu as the official language in
NWFP and Balochistan after sharing power with the

Essay about Gun Control Problems and Solutions
The problem with guns is fairly obvious: they decrease the difficulty of killing or injuring a
person. In Jeffrey A. Roth s Firearms and Violence (NIJ Research in Brief, February 1994), he
points out the obvious dangers. About 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in
1989 (about 12,000 people) were killed with firearms. Firearm attacks injured another 70,000
victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled. In 1985, the cost of shootings was an
estimated $14 billion nationwide for medical care, long term disability, and premature death. In
robberies and assaults, victims are far more likely to die when the perpetrator is armed with a gun
than when he or she has another weapon or is unarmed. I believe that... Show more content on

This has been the position of the NRA for quite some time, and it is certainly one with which I
agree; Felons and ex cons should not have access to weapons, and many misdemeanors and
juvenile crimes should also count against a person s adult record. Stiffer sentences for gun
crimes would be effective in using fear of reprimand as a crime deterrent. National as well as
community funded gun education courses would increase gun awareness and safety. These
programs could even be extended to public schools. Many guns are involved in accidents that
could easily have been prevented by a little care or forethought. Also gun purchasers could be
required to take lessons in gun safety, at the purchaser s expense. Again, the NRA has long been
a proponent of gun education. Gun control is severely weakened by the few loopholes that exist
in the system. These loopholes make it possible for minors and felons to obtain outlawed and
high powered weapons. They also serve to weaken the strength of the Brady Bill and Gun
registration. Adults are prohibited from transferring firearms to juveniles, but are not required to
store guns in securely locked cabinets. This allows kids to get access to them. This Child Access
Prevention (CAP) proposal would require parents to keep loaded firearms out of the reach of
children and would hold gun owners criminally responsible if a child gains access to an unsecured
firearm and uses it to injure himself or

Difference Between Beauty And Social Comparison Theory
CHAPTER 1
1.0INTRODUCTION
1.1BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Beauty can be defined as the combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses of an
individual especially the sight. Dillard (2008) defines the term beauty as one who holds physical
characteristics that a largely majority of people may consider visually desirable. Moreover, beauty
has been typically defined as the attractiveness in advertising literature and research, thus has been
measured, almost invariably, on a single attractive or unattractive dimension (Langmeyer Shank,
1994).
It can be seen that beauty is the most observable and accessible characteristic upon a person.
Eventually this might as well be the reason that beauty is vital and its influence pervasive in the
lives of almost every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theory explained how humans tend to constantly evaluate themselves by comparing themselves
to others. As a result, one is constantly making self and other evaluations across variety of domains
such as; intelligence, wealth, success, and even attractiveness. Eventually, this is not a passive act
whereby people are actively engaged towards comparing themselves to others through social
interactions and also media consumption.
Festinger (1954) divided the comparisons into two divisions; downwards and upwards. Mainly,
this research focuses on upward comparison whereby people tend to compare themselves to
someone else and find themselves to be lacking. In other words, one tends to compare themselves
in order to find out what they need to do in order to be more like the person they are comparing
themselves to.
As to illustrate the upward comparison; when an individual sees a beautiful or physically attractive
model featured in an advertisement promoting a particular product or service, it is certain that most
probably she would compare certain attributes that she has to that of the

Similarly, in the book assigned Oglala Women Myth, Ritual and Reality by Marla N. Powers,

tribe and to their families and religions. Furthermore, Power tries to educate her reader about the
gender and diversity of world s religion through her book. The most interesting chapter from
Powers book was the Old Age , chapter 6. In this chapter, she describes the roles of a
grandmother and of a medicine women and how they are important part of Lakota culture. I
would extend my knowledge on this chapter and focus on the particular roles Lakota s women
had to accomplish and what was expected of them. I consider grandmothers and medicine women
to be vital for the Lakota culture and their traditions. In how they are viewed and respected for
their wisdom and power. In addition, I would also focus on the online reading on the soul of the
Indian, including further research to state my point. Comparing the readings and how they are

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Research Paper
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder which effects around five million women of
reproductive age in the United States (activebeat.co). The ovaries and adrenal glands excrete
abnormally high levels of male hormones which prevents the regular release of an egg, causing
many fluid filled sacs, or cysts, to form on the ovaries. Several types of cysts can be found on the
ovaries of someone diagnosed with PCOS, the most common being those developed during the
menstrual cycle, functional cysts. Follicular cysts are a subcategory of functional cysts formed by
the overgrown follicle resulting from an unreleased egg. When a follicle ruptures following the
release of an egg, the follicle may reseal and cause fluid buildup, resulting in a corpus luteum cyst;
these cysts may enlarge considerably, causing pain, bleeding, or twisting of the ovary (PCOS
Awareness Association). Some cysts resolve themselves in one to three months while others grow

Their experiment was a success, but further researches needs to be conducted to make sure the
vaccines are easier to be distributed to other countries around the world. The potato is not an ideal
vehicle for vaccines, since it is not a common food in many developing countries and may lose its
effectiveness when cooked (Williams, 2002).
Field Trials Researchers utilizing the transgenic plants to produce vaccine for us humans are the
main purpose of molecular farming. Numerous transgenic plant vaccines are being created and field
tested each and every day. Several test of the hepatitis B vaccine in the potato were hampered by the
low levels of antigen produced in the plant, and by the safety requirement that only individuals
previously immunized with injected vaccine should be exposed to the plant vaccine (Cummins,

individual susceptible to the hepatitis B virus (Cummins, 2011). When experimenting with a

Dystopian Differences In The Hunger Games And The Hunger...
Dystopian films and books have become popular over the past few years. These tend to reflect
the way in which society could possibly soon turn if expecting extremes. Dystopian literature and
media also tend to have utopian elements as well. While the societies in these works are strict
and controlling, they do offer something that our society could possibly benefit from. Divergent
has this element. The population is broken up into five factions that represent the different types
of people in society and separate those who would fight easily due to their personal morals. The
Hunger Games on the other hand (when modern society crumbled) they punished their citizens
for fighting the government. While yes there was a chance for riches in the Hunger Games, it
took risking your life to get it. In addition, if one did win the Hunger Games they would have an
extremely easy life due to riches and a free luxury house. Divergent does not have this part, as its
utopian aspect is the fact different ideals are separated from each other. Utopian literature is a
reflectionthat is a perceived direction society may go. In these stories, mirrorsare a device used to
symbolically state the universe of the filmis a reflection not a reality. The Hunger Games series is
based of the book trilogy of the same name. In this series, the Hunger Games are a pageant based
on a punishment for a rebellion that occurred approximately 100 years before. In this pageant, two

The Origin Of The Clarinet In The 1600 s
The origination of the clarinet began in the 1600 s. It was an improved version of the Chalumeau
the first narrow reed instrument. The difference between the two instruments was that, the clarinet
now had two extra keys, and it contained a higher range by over two octaves! He also invented a
better mouthpiece, and a slightly improved bell. 1690, the clarinetwas created. It is known to be a
single reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube . All the credit for this creation goes to
Johann Christopher Denver and his son Jacob Denver. Nuremberg, Germany was the location
where the clarinet was made. Even though the Clarinet came to existence in 1690, it took many
decades afterwards for it be finalized. Towards the end of the 1700 s, the clarinet met new designs
and features. The cut holes, where we cover our fingers with, was experimented on many times.
They needed to see which shape and size had the best effect, in terms of sound. After the cut holes
were mastered, notes became an issue to create. But, with the help of Iwan Mutters 13 keyed model

Ali Hale Writing Process Analysis
In this week s article, the author, Ali Hale wrote about the five steps of the writing process. These
steps includes prewriting, writing, revising, editing and publishing. Prewriting is the first step of
the writing process, this step allows the writer to form ideas and write them down. Once they get an
idea of what to write, they can either brainstorm or free write. Brainstorm means writingdown any
ideas that comes to mind on a piece of paperwith the main idea in the center. These ideas can be

their ideas down about the topic and not worry about grammar, spelling and punctuations. After the

Because I Could Not Stop For Death Essay
Death can be perceived in many different ways. Most people would describe death as frightening,
cold, and dark. But, it is really the unknown that causes us to question it. It is inevitable, a fate that
we all must come to terms with. In these two literary pieces, death comes in different but relatable
forms. Both characters when facing death, has similar reactions but different outcomes. They give
us a sense of ease that we wouldn t feel when thinking about death. The poem, Because I could not
stop for Death by Emily Dickinson, describes death as kind and patient. The character states that
she could not stop for death, so death kindly stopped for her. In this poem death seems to
sympathize that she doesn t want to die. Death is in no rush to take her life, but instead
reminisces about her childhood while passing a school yard. Death seemed to be gentle in taking
the characters life and knew no haste during the last stroll of her life. In the play Death Knocks by
Woody Allen, death is perceived as funny, clumsy, and sarcastic. The first part of the play death is

Essay on Nationalism in German Music During the Early...
Nationalism in German Music During the Early Romantic Period
Until the nineteenth century, music was generally regarded as an international language. Folk
music had always been in place and linked directly with particular regions. On a larger scale
though, European music was a device for expression through the application of Italian techniques
and styles. In other words, its technical vocabulary was Italian, and from the time of the early
baroque, European music, in general, had evolved its styles and technical devices from the
developments of Italian composers. Furthermore, court opera was nearly always performed in
Italian, whether in Dresden or in London, no matter who composed it or where it was performed.

Sonatas written a few years later are designated for the Hammerklavier and not for the pianoforte,
Italian for piano. Such subtle changes in traditional composition direction foreshadowed ever
increasing tendencies toward German nationalistic ideas in music. As Henry Raynor puts it, the
Napoleonic invasions which turned Beethoven from a simple revolutionary into a patriotic
Austrian revolutionary seem to have made him feel that his own language was a perfectly
satisfactory way of telling pianists how he wanted his music played. These early feelings of
nationalism, if not just for Beethoven, stemmed from the years of unity under the auspices of
Napoleon s Empire, which gave a considerable portion of central Europe reason to realize their
collective similarities. This large area shared a common language and historical legacy. Traditions
were similar as were aspirations. Indeed, ...the complex that was to become the German Empire
presented a more or less homogeneous state, united by language and culture but forced by political
organization into political disunity... Nonetheless, the idea of German unity had surfaced years
earlier, long before the revolutionary borders of Central Europe were rationalized by Napoleon and
before Beethoven s use of German vocabulary for instruction in his music. The prominent German
Enlightenment thinkers Johann Gottfried Herder and Johann Gottlieb Fichte had espoused that

Soil Music Analysis
How does Dirt Music articulate the main concepts which foregrounds your personal reading?
Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music explores universal experiences and the fragility of the human
condition, enabling the extrapolation of many personal readings due to its textual integrity. A
personal reading foregrounds self imposed solitude catalysed by paralysis from grief and traumatic
events, which results in emotional suppression and deterioration of identity. Post modern
globalisation exacerbates such alienation to marginalise non conformists by preventing fulfilling
human connections. Thus, painful cathartic processes are required to resolve the detriments of
disconnection through immersion into restorative landscapes to confront the past and heal.
Trauma can lead to an individual s desire for isolation from the physical world as a coping
mechanism to medicate grief and loss. Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music portrays the healing story
of Georgie and Lu who painfully confront their pasts to reinvigorate life. Solitude imposed by the
oblivion of virtuality is articulated when Georgie swims with the dog by the metaphor and
emotional adjectives, she lay back in the water, wishing some portal would open, that she might
click on some dopey icon and proceed safely, painlessly, without regret or memory, highlighting the
artificial suppression of emotions as alleviation from the debilitating consequences of grief.
Moreover, disconnection as a protective barrier against loss is

In the Nobel Lecture written in 1996, Szymborska pinpoints the inspiration of her poetry by asking
the question I don t know . Szymborska continues to elaborate on this concept by stating it s just not
easy to explain to someone else what you don t understand yourself. Using this notion to pinpoint
the themes she develops throughout the context of her poems, she portrays The End and the

Referring to the concept of the two perspectives, Szymborska s diction, tone, and imagery
introduces a theme of war. She titles the poem this way to express one perspective of war, which is
defined through the context of the poem, the end. This aspect is thoroughly emphasized through
Baranczak and Cavanaugh s translation. The diction provided by Baranczak and Cavanaugh s
translation provides the tone and imagery that form this poem. The descriptive element in this
literary work creates an effect of imagery. The audience can vividly comprehend the idea that
Szymborska introduces unlike Trzeciak s translation, which expresses a more concise tone. The
brevity of her translation makes the piece less descriptive and introduces little imagery. Baranczak
and Cavanaugh s translation acknowledges the tone of the poem, which is the acknowledgment of
the end of the war instead of the beginning. The meaning of the end and the beginning can reflect
multitudes of themes. Szymborska s diction introduces the theme of war. This theme is better

Swimming South Analysis
The documentary Swimming South which premiered on 29 January 2017, would have sent a shock
through many of the viewers of channel 9 s weekly 60 minutes program. As it describes a threat
that could cost the Australian tourism industry billions and even have the potential to kill, it is
called the Irukandji jellyfish. Throughout the documentary 60 minutes has cleverly depicted the
jellyfish to be a lethal killer, to really gain the audiences focus while then informing viewers of the
damage this animal can do to not only us but to are whole economy. With various techniques being

Providing video footage of them both actually being stung by the Irukandji gives the realistic
image to the viewers. As with actual evidence and proof of the stings occurring it provides the
viewers with a more realistic feel of what this creature can actually do to us. As the immense pain
being shown by them, it creates a fear for the audience since this creature could be very likely
swimming alongside us in the water. The archival footage just adds to the whole documentaries
persona of the Irukandji being the bad guy and 60 minutes being the hero saving us. By
continuing the bias side of the documentary saying we even have proof of how deadly the
jellyfish is. To cleverly hook the audience to the one side of the topic they are being shown, being
the Jellyfish is pure evil nothing else. Not considering the fact that we are swimming in its home
but this clearly portrays the director s intent as well to only have the audience react due to the bad
effects of this animal. To have the audience think they have to do something about this and have
them worried about this massive threat to us and the tourism industry.
The documentary Swimming south combines a variety of specific techniques such as Camera
techniques, Narration and Archival footage to effectively position the audience to be against this
threat.

Pat is a former teacher with a likable and inviting personality about him but can be tell by the

Synthesis Of Pnitroaniline From Aniline Essay
This experiment takes a longer time then other experiments, taking approximately three weeks to
complete. It involves a three step synthesis to make pnitroaniline from aniline and then we will be
characterizing our product using the new and useful technique of thin layer chromatography (TLC).
We will not be doing the first part of this experiment only parts two and three.
Electrophiles are reagents which are attracted to other electrons and in order to bond to
nucleophiles, they accept electron pairs. Electrophiles attack benzene and this results in hydrogen
substitution. Nonetheless, this isn t thermodynamically favoured due to a sp3 hybridized carbon
being generated. This disrupts the cyclic conjugation. In order for the aromatic ring to be
regenerated, a proton will be lost at the sp3 hybridized carbon. This means pnitroaniline can be
prepared by electrophilic aromatic substitution. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Acetyl groups are electron withdrawing. This reduces the activity of the lone pair on the nitrogen
either in a protonation reaction or an oxidation reaction. The conditions required for nitration are

In the second part of the experiment, we will be performing the nitration of Acetanilide. We will
first need to form the nitronium ion in situ by the dehydration of the nitric acid. The dehydrating
agent for this experiment is sulphuric acid. The nitronium ion is an extremely strong and powerful

How Coyotes Killed Deer Hunting
As a deer hunter, I never like to hear about whether another fellow hunter s herd is much smaller
this year. To understand what the author is conveying and whether the reader is engaged and
informed of the issue, we need to look at the points Honeycutt is making. Coyotes predatory
behaviour on white tail deeris the main reason why herd numbers are so small. Furthermore to
understand if his message is getting across we need to look at the importance of the points he is
making. Not many hunters realize that coyotes are having a significant impact on herd numbers.
This is the point the author of the article How Coyotes Killed Deer Huntingmakes.
One point Honeycutt made was how did coyotes spread east of the Mississippi River? While there
is no definite way to determine how the coyotes got there in the first place, we can infer that habitat
destruction and human settlement has pushed the coyotes towards the east. Honeycutt doesn t state
this specifically, but he hints at it when he says between 1900 1950 they spread into the great lake
regions and on into northeastern states. Then during the late 1900 s and early 2000 s they spread
from southern plains eastward to the southeastern region of the country (Honeycutt, 2016). A

agree with Honeycutt is because I have family in the southern states, and deer is a good source of

eat. Many families in the south rely on hunting, but not as a sport, they rely on it to

Summary Of The Portrait Of A Lady In A Blue Dress
Copley s piece titled Portrait of a Lady in a Blue Dress created in 1763 by John Singleton
Copley, represents an unnamed female portrait painted with oil on canvas. The piece currently
resides in the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. The work of art can be seen from one
side only because it hangs on the wall. There is a great deal of indications in the paintingto show the
viewer who this womanwas and how she ranked high within society.
The portrait is displayed horizontally with a gold trimmed frame. The subject is a female that
looks to be in her early 20 s sitting upright on a large brown chair. If the viewer travels up the
painting the first indication of the woman s class is her satin, blue dress. The saturated blue shines
and falls in the light like water. Paired with the dress are her exceptionally detailed endings to her
sleeves. The lace is even painted as though it is translucent, allowing a little of the blue dress to
show through the sleeve. Flowers throughout history have symbolized innocence of a woman and
her virginity. The repeating theme of flowers, in the sleeve cuffs and ribbon) in the woman s attired
suggests her purity or innocent nature. Another very details section of the painting includes the
corset/torso details. The sewing suggests texture in the torso with small beading in between.
Towards the top of the chest in the center, the female seems to bear an extravagant, ribbon piece
with a tear drop bead in the center. The light pink

Merck, The FDA, And The Vioexx Recall
The Central Problem
In the Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall case study, the question as to whether or not Merck
conducted itself in a socially responsible and ethical manner with regard to Vioxx is the central
problem we will examine in this case. Many argue that the sole problem lies within the
pharmaceutical company Merck and Co., Inc., and while that may in fact be the case, other parties
such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can be held responsible as well. Merck a research
driven pharmaceutical company dedicated to putting patients first, is one of the largest
pharmaceutical companies throughout the world (Presley, 2). The American pharmaceutical giant

Merck focused solely on financial gains and the impact the drug had on company revenue,
neglecting its ethical responsibility to both consumers and its shareholders.
Important facts of the case
If you search the web regarding Merck, the FDA, and the Vioxx Recall you ll find a number of
primary and secondary sources with central facts regarding the Vioxx case. While there are a
number of variables to consider, I focused on the factual data that provided integral facts about
this case. In the early 90s congress passed the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) that
requires pharmaceutical companies to pay the FDA to review proposed medicines. This came as
a result of pressure to get drugs into the market quickly as consumers were fearful that they were
not receiving medicines quickly. This act allows the FDA to provide reviews that approve or
disapprove various drugs companies seek to enter into the market; yet the process was found that
two thirds of the survey lacked confidence that adequately monitors the safety of prescriptions once
they are on the market (Lawrence, 483). Because there was pressure to get drugs into the market
the FDA shortened the approval time which caused the approval percentage to increase from 1.56
percent to 5.35 percent in 2001. While at the same

Hrothgar In Beowulf
TV cameras have a knack for only picking up the good things world leaders do. These shots are
meant to paint someone like the US President in a positive light. It turns out even epics from
Anglo Saxon times would do everything they could to make their kings seem great and generous,
but as with everything else there is a side not seen by the public eye. In the epic of Beowulfa king
named Hrothgar is seen on the outside as the greatest and most generous king the land had ever
seen, but on the inside he is much more human. Hrothgar like all great leaders comes with many
flaws. He is very similar to current and past world leaders and brings a new meaning to the word
great. Despite being thought about in a positive light he certainly has his warts. These include his
heavy drinking habit, a lack of self control, and no desire whatsoever to be king of the Danes....

The early cantos in the textual iteration of Beowulf describe Hrothgar of this great and generous
king. A whole column is used to describe his generous deeds, such as harboring Beowulf s father
in his darkest hour. There s one scene in particular in which the cantos depiction and the movie s
depiction are incredibly different. It comes when Hrothgar throws a party the night before
Beowulf s battle with Grendel. In the cantos Hrothgar seems to be in control and enjoying
everyone s company, none more so than his lovely wife Wealtheow. However in the film Hrothgar
seems to be forcing himself upon his wife, who doesn t seem to enjoy her marriage in the first
place. During the films interpretation of the party Hrothgar seems to be ridiculously intoxicated,
slurring his speech and stumbling all around Heorot. It is this drastic difference that makes a
person realize that maybe Hrothgar is not as great as it seems, but that s not

The high acid content of strawberry juice helps you to remove discolorations from your tooth

Consider using natural coconut oil for whitening your teeth. Giving your teeth a 10 minute daily
rinse in coconut oil can have great effects on the whiteness of your smile. After approximately 10
minutes, make sure to spit it out, then brush like normal. You should start seeing results after just a
few days.
TIP! These bits of food will get caught in your teeth and leave stains. A great way to avoid getting
stains is by chewing sugar free gum.
Toothpastes that claim they will make your teeth whiter usually dont work. Although these
toothpastes provide some degree of whitening, you are going to need other, stronger methods to get
your teeth as white as you want them. If you insist on buying a whitening toothpaste, make sure to
get one that has baking soda in it.
Although mouthwashes help to improve the health of your mouth, they also cause teeth
discoloration. If you still prefer to use mouthwash, opt for a formula that is not brightly colored or

human flourishing which is imperative to creating a whole person and directly applies to Augustine

even though his mother Monica pushes for him to be religious. His lack of religious affiliation is

with. The association of these friends served Augustine s satisfaction for rebellion. Augustine was

Research has found that while stress contributes to alcoholism, a positive social support can prevent
alcohol abuse from taking place (Mulia, Schmidt, Bond, Jacobs, Korcha, 2008). African Americans
represent 12 percent of the U.S. population, and more than half are women, and about 35 percent of
those women live in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). There are various patterns when it comes

Polyphemus is speaking to Odysseus in response to the last quote. He may be ugly, but he is no
dummy. You are not going to fool me. We Kyklopes care not a whistle for your thundering
Zeus..... (12) In this quote, Homer using figurative language simile to emphasize and compare
Zeus s thundering as whistle to him. He s not afraid of any Gods. That s where it revealed
Cyclops personality and perspective. We can see it by reason of Zeus. He was known as the
ruler of the Olympian Gods. He s the most powerful gods in their culture. But, he compares Zeus
s thundering matching with a whistling. So, it provided the effects of hyperbole. In But in one
stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat
their brains out, spattering the floor, then he dismembered them and made his meal..... (13 15)
This quote revealed the monster s personality is that they are so powerful and almighty. The
effects of imagery illuminates the conflicts among them as a result of monster s personality, this
means war to them, but Odysseus and his people are not his opponents. Due to the use of simile
give us a sense that how strong they are. Two men in his hands are like puppies. (13) Then he
dismembered them and made his meal..... (15) This quote revealed monster s characterization by
saying he dismembered them. It gave us a sense of monsters are not the people you should mess
with. The characteristic of them is always uncivil and

Harry Erskine Series Essay
The Harry Erskine series is a set of novels by renowned British horror novelist Graham
Masterton. Given that Graham dabs in so many other genres and has many other series under
his belt, the publication of the six novels in the series has been sporadic. That being said the bulk
of the novels have been published between 1976 and 2009. The lead character in the series is the
self styled psychic Harry Erskine. When we first come across the enigmatic Erskine, he is a
shaman earning his living through providing psychic reading to an assortment of old rich ladies in
New York City. Nonetheless, given the high demand for his services, he frequently travels to other
cities on the Eastern seaboard such as Miami. Harry Erskine had been skeptical of the... Show more

In these novels, the crime committed involves the killing of Native Americans and taking away of
their land by European settler centuries ago. The crimes that were committed by the early settlers
are now coming back to haunt their children in the form of a Manitou spiritual bodies of the Native
Algonquin peoples. In the Graham Masterton novels, the Manitou is Misquamacus one of the most
powerful Native American Medicine Men who ever lived who makes his first appearance in the
first novel, The Manitou. An ancient Arabian genie is the main antagonist in the Djinn, the
second novel of the series. The Harry Erskine series of novels has variously been described as
one of the best fiction novels that you could ever read. Masterton creates a brilliant supernatural
threat, lovable, memorable characters, and fantastic pacing that provides an ever increasing sense
of dread. The novels provide some good descriptions where you just need them and are vague
enough to leave you in suspense, which is what you would want from a horror novel. The
antagonist Misquamacus is a frightening though vague figure that has the power to conjure the
most frightening of North American demons. With such a formidable foe, you are left wondering
if Harry Erskine and his sidekick could ever learn enough, to stop the

A Blink Of An Eye
In a Blink of an Eye Flannels, big square glasses, always smiling, and of course his silly since of
humor. Those are some of the best things I remember about my Grandpa. His name was Colon
Lee Sykes Sr., but everyone called him Pop. He recently left this world, on March 27, 2015. The
day, the week, even months leading up to his death are memories I cant seem to forget. Ever since
I could remember my grandpa lived with my family. While includes my mom, dad, brother, and
myself. While we were little he took care of us while our parents went to work. We were very
close to our Grandpa. Even as we got older my parents would go out with my Aunts, and
Grandpa to play BINGO. Pop would take us kids, plus our cousin Douglas, and my best friend
Jessica, out to go eat and to the mall every weekend. His stories were so amazing to hear. I loved
when he would tell us about something he experienced as he was growing up. One story I
remember is about him and his twin brother Carol. As kids they would go into the cow fields and
pick up the baby cows and run with them. They thought it was so funny when the momma cows
would start running after them. He would tell us about how it was like before TV, before,
internet, before all of technology. Not only did he have stories for days, he was a very smart man
also. He could do math in his head like a genius. Of course he learned how to do math before there
was a such thing as a calculator. He didn t finish much school though. I think up until

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Clinical
A.Clinical Strengths Needs:
I was unable to be at clinical today, therefore, these strengths aren t directly related to the clinical
day. I wasn t sure if you still wanted me to apply these objectives to my day.
Strengths: Today was a difficult day but I was able to meet some objectives even though they didn
t directly apply to the clinical setting. Objectives that I met were objective 2 and 5. I meet objective
2, communicating effectively with staff, by calling you and letting you know about my situation.
Even though I didn t want to call in, I knew it was best to discuss my options, therefore, I was
effective in communicating. In my future career as a nurse, as well as other careers, you need to be

My last week, course objectives were:
1) Start studying for my second health assessment exam, which is on November 3rd. The last
N317 exam was worded difficulty, therefore, I plan to study in between 2 3 hours each day. I also
plan to study with a classmate because we can quiz each other.
2) I plan to get more clinical skills checked off. I will do this by choosing a second resident that
needs care for those desired skills.
3) I plan to be more confident in giving immunizations to avoid the push and poke technique. I plan
to do this by practicing immunization techniques at least 5 times a day.
I was able to meet my first goal as I studied at least two hours each day and had a study buddy. I
was unable to meet my second and third goal as I wasn t at clinical due to a family emergency,
therefore, I am transferring these to my next week goals. However, I was able to practice
immunization techniques at least 5 times each day. I am determined to meet these two goals I was

My Ability As An Effective Teacher
I have always questioned my ability as an effective teacher. Every lesson I teach or conjure up in the
wee hours of the night requires the learner in mind. Hospitals are for patients, so schools should be
for students. Yet, there is a constant gravitation towards running schools based on money and
logistics. These issues are out of the educator s hands, but the ideals, and the decision makers, that
fuel them can have detrimental effects on the teachers recruited to the field and the effectiveness
with which these teachers continue through their career.
Year after year, professional development in public educationseems to try to fix the same issues
with the same conversations and the same quick fix band aids. If these conversations were ... Show

I learned more about pedagogical skills, or the actual art of forming and lesson, reaching different
types of learners, meeting different needs, and closing achievement gaps in my graduate studies to
becoming a reading specialist, my principal certification, and my own personal experiences as a
teacher in the classroom. Although at the time I wanted my student teaching to be completed as
fast as possible, I now understand that more knowledge of my subject was necessary. Professional
development books became a weekly buy at Barnes and Noble because I was constantly trying to
figure out a better way to educate students.
University programs feel their programs are extensive enough to prepare individuals for the
classroom. As long as departments meet accreditation requirements, the effectiveness with which
these courses are taught weaken and only passing rates on final exams are scrutinized. One
semester of student teaching, coupled with field experience and a few education classes are
deemed enough to fill much needed teaching positions simply because there is a shortage of
teachers. If the track to obtain a degree is easy, there are more students. More students mean more
money for the university. More graduates mean more empty teaching jobs filled.
Student achievement is the underpinning of education and is directly correlated to teacher
effectiveness; therefore,

Information Technology Audit
INFORMATION SYSTEMS AUDIT
Introduction An information technology audit, or information systems audit, is an examination of
the controls within an Information technology (IT) infrastructure. IT auditing is a branch of general
auditing concerned with governance (control) of information and communications technologies
(computers). IT auditors primarily study computer systems and networks from the point of view of
examining the effectiveness of their technical and procedural controls to minimise risks. IT audits
are also known as automated data processing (ADP) audits and computer audits or IS, IT or ICT
auditing and systems auditing. They were formerly called electronic data processing (EDP) audits

What Is A Hinge Joint In The Knee
The knee is the largest join in the human body, it is a hinge joint which means it allows extension
and flexion of the leg. The knee is full of tendons, ligaments, and cartilage that help the knee with its
structure and function. Also the knee joint has a variety of bones for example, femur, tibia, and
patella ACL, anterior cruciate ligament, is an important ligamentlocated in the knee, and within the
knee, it connects the femur to the tibia. The femur is a bone located in the thigh, that extends
from the hip to the knee, while the tibia is located near the front of the lower leg between the
ankle and patella. The ACL is located on either side of the knee, and cross each other in the front,
helping the knee keep from bending inward. The ACL

The Instruction Of Spoken Language
The instruction of spoken language is one of the most important for language classrooms since
communication has been the main priority for language teachers. The use of discourse analysis
(DA) for language teaching (LT) has been indispensable; due to the immense number of elements
that contribute significantly to this field. In addition, Schiffrin et al. (2001:707) cited Olshtain and
Celce Murcia who claim that pragmatics and DA are related to languageteaching. Both of these
create essential connections that make teaching of spoken language relevant; nevertheless, there are
more elements are linked to DA and the instruction of this productive skill.
The aim of this paper is to examine how DA relates and benefits LT. First, I would like to... Show

For this reason, spoken production can be improved if these elements are taught adequately.
Nevertheless, a question may be aroused after this, what amount of vocabulary, grammar and
phonology do instructors need to teach?
Teaching speaking effectively goes in hand with DA and several language applications which
focus on how oral speech needs to be delivered. Hence, vocabulary one of the three main
elements is the one that deals with the lexicon of the language. Instructors need to teach words in
context; as a consequence, the new lexis will be storage faster and it will be ready to be used either
in spoken or written language (Scrivener 2011:200).
Therefore, vocabulary plays an important role in the instruction of spoken language. Nonetheless,
words can express more than one meaning and this can cause a couple of difficulties to students
while they are learning such language. As part of this, if DA takes place in the classroom, it can be
found easily that words may vary from meaning to meaning. In addition, DA and semantics also
alter the way that speakers select words to be used. Finch (2003) defines semantics as the study of
the meaning; thus, what words or utterances can be meant at the moment of using them. By the
same token, Lakoff and Johnson (1990) claim that there are two types of meaning literal and
figurative . The first one represents what it has been said; whereas the second one focuses on the

Lancelot As A Hero In King Arthur And His Knight
Within any story, the hero must contain three integral qualities: he or she must be the apparent
protagonist of the novel, he or she must commit oneself to noble qualities and doings without
exception, and he or she must be figuratively or literally invisible.
In King Arthur His Knights, the three main contenders to be the hero of the story are Lancelot, King
Arthur, and Galahad. However, each has a fatal flaw that annuls their ability to become the hero,
for none of them adhere to all three qualities of a hero.
Lancelot has the most plausible chance to be the hero of the story. He exhibits two of the three
qualities needed to be the hero. He seems to be the protagonist because his existence is necessary
for the progression of the story, and he is literally invincible. He can easily destroy any foe that
blocks him from success from bouts with an invisible knight to bouts with up to 15 knights at
once (). Lancelot apparently exhibits the strong qualities of a knight, so why is he not the hero of
the story? He does not fit the heroic quality of committing himself to nobility. The notable example
of this lack of quality is his affair with Guinevere. In The Knight of the Cart Lancelot heroically
rides to save Guinevere, but later that night sleeps with her while committing treason against King
Arthur (). Some may excuse his actions with the belief that he is in love with Guinevere and
Guinevere with him. However, love does not always have to express with sex and thus

  • 2. Syrian Refugees Should Be Banned Why should I as an African American be alarmed by the Muslim Ban or welcome the Syrian Refugees into the United States? Many people fear America only getting worse under Trump s administration, so if that was the case would these Muslim majority countries accept us African Americans? Keep in mind that the United Statesis not the only country that has rejected refugees from Syria in recent years. Numerous countries in Europe and the Middle Easthave refused to accept what would undoubtedly become a burden to any country. In my opinion this is not a Muslim ban as the media like to refer to it as. There are countless factors involved and it does not simply boil down to religion. If this order was based on religion, then the visa ban would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The UK and other wealthy nations in Europe have resettled less than 2% of Syrian refugees. Only around 5,500 Syrians had been granted asylum or refugee status in Britain since the conflict began in 2011. The United States should not be criticized for doing what every other country should be doing, which is looking out for our interests. Especially when other wealthy nations and even majority Muslim neighbors to Syria refuse to accept Syrian refugees. I know this is might be an unpopular opinion or viewpoint but I was not as outraged as other African Americans about this executive order. There is this rhetoric that I should be equally as alarmed as the groups that are being affected by this policy. That while it may not affect me directly, somehow after targeting illegal immigrants and Muslim immigrants, African Americans are next in line . This does not make much sense to me because in my opinion, being Black in America means we are always under attack. This has been nonstop since my ancestors step foot off the slave ship, and throughout the years both the Hispanic and Arab/middle eastern communities have been silent. Why should I try to defend those who never cared to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Transnational Cinema Essay As cultural identity being questioned in global screen due to the influences of transnational cinema and Diasporas in different places, this clip question further the possibilities in future transnational cinema. Through the emergence of cinema styles, all films are to be considered transnational. This essay will argue that transnational cinema could be emerging to a new level in the filmindustry. The clip provided with the essay explores the potential of transnational films with the context of films studied included in this subject. As Ezra and Rowden argues, the key to transnationalism is the recognition of the decline of national sovereignty as a regulatory force in global coexistence. The impossibility of assigning a fixed national ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hess and Zimmermann mention that conventional categories have blurred and there s demands for new political and aesthetic responses in transnational cinema (John Hess 2006). These transnational films I believe would be growing significantly in the film industry as a part of film history. As seen in most third transnational films from Asia countries, popular cultural products criss cross cultural borders everyday therefore these cultures remain circulating in transnational cinema (Aquilia 2006). The power of transnational cinema could not be ignored as global screen reflects a transnational cultural exchange (Aquilia 2006). My clip shows that those sections of films we studied consisting crossover boundaries of actors and actresses, overseas settings and different cultures portrayed. Athique also argues that non Indians and people with little Indian history background found enjoyment in the mixture of Bombay films (Athique 2008). Thus, transnational cinema in both ways depicted the cultural identity audiences can relate to, as well as transnational culture exchange among the globe. Transnational cinema is a developing concept. It changes alongside the film industry. The ever increasing of Diasporas and ever developing cultural identity help shape transnational cinema. Transnational cinema is an emergence of cultural phenomenon and it develops though time. The clip I created aims to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay On Your Daughter Dances Flamenco A red and black swirl, that s how it all started. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mother and I were standing in line at a frame shop. There was a girl with a black leotard and a red flowy skirt standing in front of us, with her mother. Your daughter dances Flamenco, right? Where does she take classes? My mother asked the girl s mother. Next thing I remember, I was in a dancestudio, staring at a group of dancers who seemed to be flying across the room, all wearing long skirts and dance shoes. I couldn t take my eyes off of them. I didn t know it right then, but fourteen years later, I would be able to dance just like any of those dancers I was staring at with dreamy eyes. Practicing dance, preparing dance plays and performances... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I can relate dancing to playing in two different ways. The first one, of course, whenever I am dancing I can certainly feel like I am playing a game. By this I don t mean that I don t take dance seriously. For the contrary, I enjoy dance to a level where I feel just like when I am playing a videogame. Each new step I have to learn, represents a new challenge. Once I am able to correctly perform said step, I have to keep practicing until I can perform it perfectly, then I can move on to the next step. Once a choreography is complete, we, as dancers, are supposed to rehearse it over and over again until we feel as confident as we can in order to be able to perform it in the theatre. Reaching that point for me is like defeating the boss in a Mario Bros. game. One can say the turtles, owls, and other enemies in the game could be represented by blisters, twisted ankles, mistakes committed, and some other challenges we may encounter while trying to master a piece of choreography. The other way I can relate dance to play, which is kind of the most obvious one, are dance plays. Last year, I played the role of Anastasia Romanov at the Foro de Arte y Cultura in Guadalajara, Mexico. At some points it did, in fact, feel like I was playing pretend. I wore a costume that looked exactly like what Anastasia wore in the animated movie and dyed my hair copper. Of course, I watched the movie probably a hundred times trying to ... I m going to talk about the geography, some civilizations connected to it, and why it is just as important today as it was in the past. • 6. A History of Product Placement in Film and Television A History of Product Placement in Film and Television Peter Rush Product placement in the marketing world has become more and more evident in the past few decades. More specifically, product placement in the movie industry has been one of the most successful ways to advertise products. Oftentimes, products are associated with a film, or vice versa. Such is the case with Reese s Pieces candies and Stephen Spielberg s film, E.T . While it is a very expensive way of companies to advertise their brands, it is one that pays off immensely if executed properly. Although it seems as if product placement in film and television is a relatively new way of marketing products to the public, it has been around as early as the late ... But although some of the Edison films were obvious offers of products and services, product placements as subtle efforts to influence audience attitude and behavior became a specialty of Edison s. His catalog listed hundreds of travelogues, such as trips to the Far West, Niagara Falls, and Hawaii, along with dozens of railroad films. The business of product placement had begun. In the United States, cinematic art and business intertwined in the 1910s and 1920s as manufacturers and government distributed advertising films that combined drama and commerce to the small town circuit. Producers of these films included International Harvester, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the YMCA. From 1914 to 1921, Ford Motor Company created a series of newsreels titled Ford Animated Weekly and Ford Educational Weekly. A typical serial included Model T races and news footage that sometimes incorporated Henry Ford meeting with government officials. These advertising films were distributed at low cost to exhibitors and found an early approval in small towns, with Ford claiming a viewership of 3 million per week (Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 2006). Not only did the product placement within the movie help to reimburse both parties of the agreement, but the American films initiated a worldwide trade in American products as well. ... • 7. Ethnic Groups in Pakistan Since its birth, Pakistan has been home to various multi ethnic societies and groups in all its provinces. The activities of these groups have had varying impact on the political history of Pakistan. This paper analyses the impact of the Sindhi ethnic society (also known as the Jeeya Sindh movement ) on the political history of Pakistan during the 1970s. I then provide a critique of the government s response to the demands of these movements and then suggest my opinion as to how the government should have reacted so as to have a better outcome. At the creation of Pakistan, a large number Mohajirs migrated from India and settled in to Sindh. From 1947 to 1951 nearly 1 million Mohajirs settled into Sindh (Rais, Rasul Buksh). They had also ... This had to different outcomes, groups with similar interests joined together to become stronger parties. During this process they also learned to co operate with each other and settle differences within themselves. The other outcome of formation of groups was that due to difference in interests of different groups, political parties could not work together hence the country landed into inconsistent leadership. There was also alienation due to large majority of one community. Above all these differences in parties lead to unequal development for different groups in fields of government jobs, education and urbanization. The states response to the Sindhi nationalist movement has been mixed. Z.A Bhutto s introduction of the quota system to safeguard the interests of the Sindhis in my opinion was biased as it aggravated intra provincial ethnic divides in Pakistan. In my opinion, the government shouldn t have imposed a quota, it instead should have aided the Sindhis in forms of educational institutions and training so that they could compete with the Mohajirs in a fair manner. As the competition would have been fair, it would have been unlikely for the Mohajirs to start a movement of their own. • 8. Essay about Gun Control Problems and Solutions The problem with guns is fairly obvious: they decrease the difficulty of killing or injuring a person. In Jeffrey A. Roth s Firearms and Violence (NIJ Research in Brief, February 1994), he points out the obvious dangers. About 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1989 (about 12,000 people) were killed with firearms. Firearm attacks injured another 70,000 victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled. In 1985, the cost of shootings was an estimated $14 billion nationwide for medical care, long term disability, and premature death. In robberies and assaults, victims are far more likely to die when the perpetrator is armed with a gun than when he or she has another weapon or is unarmed. I believe that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has been the position of the NRA for quite some time, and it is certainly one with which I agree; Felons and ex cons should not have access to weapons, and many misdemeanors and juvenile crimes should also count against a person s adult record. Stiffer sentences for gun crimes would be effective in using fear of reprimand as a crime deterrent. National as well as community funded gun education courses would increase gun awareness and safety. These programs could even be extended to public schools. Many guns are involved in accidents that could easily have been prevented by a little care or forethought. Also gun purchasers could be required to take lessons in gun safety, at the purchaser s expense. Again, the NRA has long been a proponent of gun education. Gun control is severely weakened by the few loopholes that exist in the system. These loopholes make it possible for minors and felons to obtain outlawed and high powered weapons. They also serve to weaken the strength of the Brady Bill and Gun registration. Adults are prohibited from transferring firearms to juveniles, but are not required to store guns in securely locked cabinets. This allows kids to get access to them. This Child Access Prevention (CAP) proposal would require parents to keep loaded firearms out of the reach of children and would hold gun owners criminally responsible if a child gains access to an unsecured firearm and uses it to injure himself or ... • 9. Difference Between Beauty And Social Comparison Theory CHAPTER 1 1.0INTRODUCTION 1.1BACKGROUND OF STUDY Beauty can be defined as the combination of qualities that pleases the aesthetic senses of an individual especially the sight. Dillard (2008) defines the term beauty as one who holds physical characteristics that a largely majority of people may consider visually desirable. Moreover, beauty has been typically defined as the attractiveness in advertising literature and research, thus has been measured, almost invariably, on a single attractive or unattractive dimension (Langmeyer Shank, 1994). It can be seen that beauty is the most observable and accessible characteristic upon a person. Eventually this might as well be the reason that beauty is vital and its influence pervasive in the lives of almost every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theory explained how humans tend to constantly evaluate themselves by comparing themselves to others. As a result, one is constantly making self and other evaluations across variety of domains such as; intelligence, wealth, success, and even attractiveness. Eventually, this is not a passive act whereby people are actively engaged towards comparing themselves to others through social interactions and also media consumption. Festinger (1954) divided the comparisons into two divisions; downwards and upwards. Mainly, this research focuses on upward comparison whereby people tend to compare themselves to someone else and find themselves to be lacking. In other words, one tends to compare themselves in order to find out what they need to do in order to be more like the person they are comparing themselves to. As to illustrate the upward comparison; when an individual sees a beautiful or physically attractive model featured in an advertisement promoting a particular product or service, it is certain that most probably she would compare certain attributes that she has to that of the ... However, this is not only a man s world but also a woman s. Women s contributions are equally important for the development of the society. Similarly, in the book assigned Oglala Women Myth, Ritual and Reality by Marla N. Powers, demonstrates the life of women from a Lakota tribe and what their gender role contributes to the tribe and to their families and religions. Furthermore, Power tries to educate her reader about the gender and diversity of world s religion through her book. The most interesting chapter from Powers book was the Old Age , chapter 6. In this chapter, she describes the roles of a grandmother and of a medicine women and how they are important part of Lakota culture. I would extend my knowledge on this chapter and focus on the particular roles Lakota s women had to accomplish and what was expected of them. I consider grandmothers and medicine women to be vital for the Lakota culture and their traditions. In how they are viewed and respected for their wisdom and power. In addition, I would also focus on the online reading on the soul of the Indian, including further research to state my point. Comparing the readings and how they are related to the Oglala Women book. Including my critical response in how my own religion and culture is similar to the Oglala culture. • 11. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Research Paper Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder which effects around five million women of reproductive age in the United States (activebeat.co). The ovaries and adrenal glands excrete abnormally high levels of male hormones which prevents the regular release of an egg, causing many fluid filled sacs, or cysts, to form on the ovaries. Several types of cysts can be found on the ovaries of someone diagnosed with PCOS, the most common being those developed during the menstrual cycle, functional cysts. Follicular cysts are a subcategory of functional cysts formed by the overgrown follicle resulting from an unreleased egg. When a follicle ruptures following the release of an egg, the follicle may reseal and cause fluid buildup, resulting in a corpus luteum cyst; these cysts may enlarge considerably, causing pain, bleeding, or twisting of the ovary (PCOS Awareness Association). There are some medications that are available viral treatment therapies and as well as vaccineshots. Their experiment was a success, but further researches needs to be conducted to make sure the vaccines are easier to be distributed to other countries around the world. The potato is not an ideal vehicle for vaccines, since it is not a common food in many developing countries and may lose its effectiveness when cooked (Williams, 2002). Field Trials Researchers utilizing the transgenic plants to produce vaccine for us humans are the main purpose of molecular farming. Numerous transgenic plant vaccines are being created and field tested each and every day. Several test of the hepatitis B vaccine in the potato were hampered by the low levels of antigen produced in the plant, and by the safety requirement that only individuals previously immunized with injected vaccine should be exposed to the plant vaccine (Cummins, 2011). In this case, the oral vaccine preparations will induce immune tolerance , thereby making the individual susceptible to the hepatitis B virus (Cummins, 2011). When experimenting with a transgenic potato, the process started out as inserting with genes for cholera, E.coli antigens and rotavirus enterotoxin. Adult mice were found to produce antibodies to the toxins after feeding on the transgenic potatoes (Cummins, 2011). • 13. Dystopian Differences In The Hunger Games And The Hunger... Dystopian films and books have become popular over the past few years. These tend to reflect the way in which society could possibly soon turn if expecting extremes. Dystopian literature and media also tend to have utopian elements as well. While the societies in these works are strict and controlling, they do offer something that our society could possibly benefit from. Divergent has this element. The population is broken up into five factions that represent the different types of people in society and separate those who would fight easily due to their personal morals. The Hunger Games on the other hand (when modern society crumbled) they punished their citizens for fighting the government. While yes there was a chance for riches in the Hunger Games, it took risking your life to get it. In addition, if one did win the Hunger Games they would have an extremely easy life due to riches and a free luxury house. Divergent does not have this part, as its utopian aspect is the fact different ideals are separated from each other. Utopian literature is a reflectionthat is a perceived direction society may go. In these stories, mirrorsare a device used to symbolically state the universe of the filmis a reflection not a reality. The Hunger Games series is based of the book trilogy of the same name. In this series, the Hunger Games are a pageant based on a punishment for a rebellion that occurred approximately 100 years before. In this pageant, two tributes are chosen per district ... The difference between the two instruments was that, the clarinet now had two extra keys, and it contained a higher range by over two octaves! He also invented a better mouthpiece, and a slightly improved bell. 1690, the clarinetwas created. It is known to be a single reed woodwind instrument with a cylindrical tube . All the credit for this creation goes to Johann Christopher Denver and his son Jacob Denver. Nuremberg, Germany was the location where the clarinet was made. Even though the Clarinet came to existence in 1690, it took many decades afterwards for it be finalized. Towards the end of the 1700 s, the clarinet met new designs and features. The cut holes, where we cover our fingers with, was experimented on many times. They needed to see which shape and size had the best effect, in terms of sound. After the cut holes were mastered, notes became an issue to create. But, with the help of Iwan Mutters 13 keyed model everything was falling together. • 16. Because I Could Not Stop For Death Essay Death can be perceived in many different ways. Most people would describe death as frightening, cold, and dark. But, it is really the unknown that causes us to question it. It is inevitable, a fate that we all must come to terms with. In these two literary pieces, death comes in different but relatable forms. Both characters when facing death, has similar reactions but different outcomes. They give us a sense of ease that we wouldn t feel when thinking about death. The poem, Because I could not stop for Death by Emily Dickinson, describes death as kind and patient. The character states that she could not stop for death, so death kindly stopped for her. In this poem death seems to sympathize that she doesn t want to die. Death is in no rush to take her life, but instead reminisces about her childhood while passing a school yard. Death seemed to be gentle in taking the characters life and knew no haste during the last stroll of her life. Nationalism in German Music During the Early Romantic Period Until the nineteenth century, music was generally regarded as an international language. Folk music had always been in place and linked directly with particular regions. On a larger scale though, European music was a device for expression through the application of Italian techniques and styles. In other words, its technical vocabulary was Italian, and from the time of the early baroque, European music, in general, had evolved its styles and technical devices from the developments of Italian composers. Furthermore, court opera was nearly always performed in Italian, whether in Dresden or in London, no matter who composed it or where it was performed. For example, ... Such subtle changes in traditional composition direction foreshadowed ever increasing tendencies toward German nationalistic ideas in music. As Henry Raynor puts it, the Napoleonic invasions which turned Beethoven from a simple revolutionary into a patriotic Austrian revolutionary seem to have made him feel that his own language was a perfectly satisfactory way of telling pianists how he wanted his music played. These early feelings of nationalism, if not just for Beethoven, stemmed from the years of unity under the auspices of Napoleon s Empire, which gave a considerable portion of central Europe reason to realize their collective similarities. This large area shared a common language and historical legacy. Traditions were similar as were aspirations. Indeed, ...the complex that was to become the German Empire presented a more or less homogeneous state, united by language and culture but forced by political organization into political disunity... • 20. Soil Music Analysis How does Dirt Music articulate the main concepts which foregrounds your personal reading? Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music explores universal experiences and the fragility of the human condition, enabling the extrapolation of many personal readings due to its textual integrity. A personal reading foregrounds self imposed solitude catalysed by paralysis from grief and traumatic events, which results in emotional suppression and deterioration of identity. Post modern globalisation exacerbates such alienation to marginalise non conformists by preventing fulfilling human connections. Thus, painful cathartic processes are required to resolve the detriments of disconnection through immersion into restorative landscapes to confront the past and heal. Trauma can lead to an individual s desire for isolation from the physical world as a coping mechanism to medicate grief and loss. Tim Winton s novel Dirt Music portrays the healing story of Georgie and Lu who painfully confront their pasts to reinvigorate life. Solitude imposed by the oblivion of virtuality is articulated when Georgie swims with the dog by the metaphor and emotional adjectives, she lay back in the water, wishing some portal would open, that she might click on some dopey icon and proceed safely, painlessly, without regret or memory, highlighting the artificial suppression of emotions as alleviation from the debilitating consequences of grief. It involves a three step synthesis to make pnitroaniline from aniline and then we will be characterizing our product using the new and useful technique of thin layer chromatography (TLC). We will not be doing the first part of this experiment only parts two and three. Electrophiles are reagents which are attracted to other electrons and in order to bond to nucleophiles, they accept electron pairs. Electrophiles attack benzene and this results in hydrogen substitution. Nonetheless, this isn t thermodynamically favoured due to a sp3 hybridized carbon being generated. This disrupts the cyclic conjugation. In order for the aromatic ring to be regenerated, a proton will be lost at the sp3 hybridized carbon. The piece currently resides in the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. The work of art can be seen from one side only because it hangs on the wall. There is a great deal of indications in the paintingto show the viewer who this womanwas and how she ranked high within society. The portrait is displayed horizontally with a gold trimmed frame. Flowers throughout history have symbolized innocence of a woman and her virginity. The repeating theme of flowers, in the sleeve cuffs and ribbon) in the woman s attired suggests her purity or innocent nature. • 48. The Instruction Of Spoken Language The instruction of spoken language is one of the most important for language classrooms since communication has been the main priority for language teachers. The use of discourse analysis (DA) for language teaching (LT) has been indispensable; due to the immense number of elements that contribute significantly to this field. In addition, Schiffrin et al. (2001:707) cited Olshtain and Celce Murcia who claim that pragmatics and DA are related to languageteaching. Both of these create essential connections that make teaching of spoken language relevant; nevertheless, there are more elements are linked to DA and the instruction of this productive skill. For this reason, spoken production can be improved if these elements are taught adequately. Nevertheless, a question may be aroused after this, what amount of vocabulary, grammar and phonology do instructors need to teach? Teaching speaking effectively goes in hand with DA and several language applications which focus on how oral speech needs to be delivered. Hence, vocabulary one of the three main elements is the one that deals with the lexicon of the language. Instructors need to teach words in context; as a consequence, the new lexis will be storage faster and it will be ready to be used either in spoken or written language (Scrivener 2011:200). Therefore, vocabulary plays an important role in the instruction of spoken language. Nonetheless, words can express more than one meaning and this can cause a couple of difficulties to students while they are learning such language. As part of this, if DA takes place in the classroom, it can be found easily that words may vary from meaning to meaning. In addition, DA and semantics also alter the way that speakers select words to be used. Finch (2003) defines semantics as the study of the meaning; thus, what words or utterances can be meant at the moment of using them. By the same token, Lakoff and Johnson (1990) claim that there are two types of meaning literal and figurative . Lancelot As A Hero In King Arthur And His Knight Within any story, the hero must contain three integral qualities: he or she must be the apparent protagonist of the novel, he or she must commit oneself to noble qualities and doings without exception, and he or she must be figuratively or literally invisible. In King Arthur His Knights, the three main contenders to be the hero of the story are Lancelot, King Arthur, and Galahad. However, each has a fatal flaw that annuls their ability to become the hero, for none of them adhere to all three qualities of a hero. Lancelot has the most plausible chance to be the hero of the story. He exhibits two of the three qualities needed to be the hero. He seems to be the protagonist because his existence is necessary for the progression of the story, and he is literally invincible. He can easily destroy any foe that blocks him from success from bouts with an invisible knight to bouts with up to 15 knights at once (). Lancelot apparently exhibits the strong qualities of a knight, so why is he not the hero of the story? He does not fit the heroic quality of committing himself to nobility. The notable example of this lack of quality is his affair with Guinevere. In The Knight of the Cart Lancelot heroically rides to save Guinevere, but later that night sleeps with her while committing treason against King Arthur ().
