7. What is Professional learning communities?
Shirley Hord, an expert on school leadership, came
up with perhaps the most efficient description of the
strategy: “The three words explain the concept:
Professionals coming together in a group—a
community—to learn.”
8. A professional learning community or PLC, is a group of educators that meets regularly, shares expertise,
and works collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of students.
PLC uses small-group collaboration of schools or teaching faculties as a form of professional
development.
Professional learning communities have two major goals:
a) improved teacher practice
b) which leads to improved learner achievement.
Teachers discuss and reflect on their instructional techniques, lesson designs, and assessment practices,
while administrators may address leadership questions, strategies, and issues.
9. Importance Of Professional Learning Communities
For CPD:
PLCs help to achieve sustainable improvement in the learning takes place in the school.
They fulfil a need for more professional development to become more authentic, timely and relevant.
They help bridging the gap between education theory, policy and practice, creating spaces for addressing
practical issues and connecting pedagogical practice with subject content knowledge.
They provide spaces where teachers share innovative ideas with others.
This stimulates teachers to interrogate and renovate their practice rather than to recycle old ideas.

educators
