Connect Malcolm Gladwell Analysis
Connect: On page 6, Malcolm Gladwell states, "giants are not what we think they are. The same
qualities that appear to give them strength are often the source of great weakness." I knew that many
people, in today's standards, take advantage of what helps them the most. For example, I think
technology is our greatest strength, in relation to Gladwell's book when he talks about Goliath,
because with it, we accomplish so much and we can learn something new with a push of a button. It
is also a weakness because with a push of a button our society could crash or your identity could be
stolen.
Extend: Malcolm made me see the term "giant" in a whole new light. I would usually say my
brother is a "giant" compared to me, or that the ride is gigantic. ... Show more content on

He writes "many people used to think that what defines dyslexics is that they get the word
backwards– "cat" would be "tac," or something like that– making it sound like dyslexia is a problem
in the way that the words are seen. But it is much more profound than that (pg. 100)." I knew that
dyslexia was a hard challenge for those who have it. I, for one, could not imagine having it because I

David And Goliah Chapter 6 Summary
In chapter 6 of David and Goliath, the author Malcolm Gladwell illustrates underdogs can be
powerful when face against with unfair rules because they can be fearless since they have no other
choice, they will immorally break the rules with trickery. In chapter 6, Gladwell mentions the
movement of Civil Rights in the 1960's and the idea that underdogs may act unscrupulously and
immorally to achieve their goals since they have nothing to lose and running out of options. Martin
Luther King Jr's and one of his companions named Wayne Walker was facing problems like being
outnumbered and the organization they were involved with was losing influence . However, they
learned from a march that tricky tactics was the key point.Just like the story of Br'er Rabbit, the
rabbit tricked the fox to escape. So they started to bend the rules considered unacceptable by society
and use all the resources they had , to achieve the goal. For example, King and Walker were using
children that were still in high school as tools to face against the police, and tried to set up a picture
of children being attacked by the police and their dogs to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

One of the plans was getting arrested on purpose. However, the plan only works in Birmingham,
because the local police of other cities treated the protesters with respect and kindness. That was not
the quality King and Walker were looking for to create an attractive subject. The reason it worked in
Birmingham was because Walker took advantage of the public safety commissioner who's strongly
disliked Black people , to made a huge play for publicity. The public safety commissioner ordered
his men to use the different kinds of violence, which was exactly Walker wanted for the

Comparing Gladwell's 'David And Goliath'
While reading David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm
Gladwell it became clear to me that many things I perceive in real life are not actually as they seem
and small choices can have big effects. He uses stories from history as well as stories and studies he
has put together supplemented by real statistics and information to shine a light on a lot of
misconceptions people have with how the world works. He presents an alternate way to look at the
world and obstacles we have to overcome during our lives and that our ancestors had to overcome.
His stories directly tie into many of the concepts we have discussed in class I will be discussing how
Motivation and Nature V Nurture directly relate to the disadvantages ... Show more content on

How preconceived notions or in other words stereotypes stopped many people from taking on
Goliath because he was perceived as invincible. However only David who was able to look past the
Stereotype was able to see Goliath for what he really was, a blind Giant who was an easy foe to take
down. Gladwell goes into depth to explain that while you would expect this not to be true the
underdog wins more often than you would think. Gladwell also talks about how Goliath's own
shortcomings were what failed him in the end, because of his selective attention he was only able to
focus on David coming at him and not realize the imminent threat until it was too late. Part of this
was due to his inability to see and part of it was due to our brains own faulty system of focussing on
one illicit detail and filling in the rest around us automatically. Goliath was only focused on weak
David coming at him while David had actually taken the time to fully scan Goliath and figure out
his weakness. David overcame his selective attention and was able to beat Goliath who was
perceived as invincible. Gladwell also uses history about the Impressionist movement in Paris's
struggle to break past the stereotypes of the time to become one of the most successful art style ever.
The Impressionist movement was broke and looked down upon in the society of France because
they didn't fit into societies mold of what art should be. They broke out of the typical stereotypes of
what art needed to be ; clean with no visible brush strokes vividly detailing a noble scene. Only
because they did not get bogged down by the stereotypes of the time and kept pushing forward does
the world now have impressionism and all the culture that came to the world because of

How Are Casey And Goliath Similar
In the poem "Casey at Bat" and story "David and Goliath," a comparison of David and Casey shows
differences and similarities. Their first similarity is that they were both extremely confident. This is
true because the poem states, "There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place; There
was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile on Casey's face.", Also the story states, "When Goliath
started forward, David ran toward him." This means that Casey is confident because he wasn't
scared he was just acting calm. That proves that David is confident because Goliath was at least two
times his size and he wanted to kill him. A second similarity between Casey and David is that they
were both dutiful. This is true because the poem states, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A second difference between David and Casey is that not many people knew who David was, but
many people knew Casey. The story proved this point when it exclaimed, "Who are you?" The man
didn't know who David was even after David killed Goliath. Casey is well known because the poem
mentioned, "Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt." This makes him
popular because five thousand people were cheering for him since they knew who he was and what
he could do. The third difference is that David won his battle and Casey lost his. When the story
stated, "The bodies of the Philistines were scattered all along the road from Shaaraim to Gath and
Ekron." it proved that point. The Israelites were fighting the Philistines and all of them ether died or
ran away so that means that he

Difference Between David And Goliath
Being disadvantaged at birth is rather painful and should be avoided at all costs. However, as
humans, we have evolved over the years to adapt to both internal and external environment. For
example, David and Goliath, a non– fiction book that represents the fight between the underdog and
giant and advantage vs. drawback, shows that those who are outnumbered can manipulate his or her
surroundings in favor with strategy. Vice versa, those who are deemed advantageous are more
susceptible to becoming arrogant and cocky. Thus, advantage is relative to the environment and the
people within. While the dictionary defines advantage as an antonym of drawback , reality has failed
to meet our expectations, only to give rise to a group of people known ... Show more content on

As a result, my aspiration prior to reading David and Goliath was to graduate from an Ivy League.
However, startling statistics from the book backed up by research showed that by attending a
university with a higher average in SAT scores, I had a higher chance of dropping out from a STEM
major during those four years. To clarify, the author introduced a concept known as the fish in the
pond. For example, those who possess a potential to achieve high GPAs and test scores were
classified as a Big fish. Likewise, those who have average grades were considered to be a small fish.
Ideally, every student should be a big fish inside a small but friendly pond. Unfortunately, our
abilities are relative to others, and the fact that our success largely depend on who we are competing
with. For instance, a very bright student who graduated from a mediocre high school gets admitted
to an Ivy league. He or she is probably accustomed to a friendly environment with little or no
competition. However, an Ivy league, in this case, serves no longer as an advantage, but a drawback.
As soon as the confidence declines, the particular student will no longer possess the needed
adrenaline to complete his or her classes due to prodigy–like

Comparing Donatello's David And Goliath
The story of David and Goliath is inspirational. It is about a courageous shepherd called David,
who's rescued Israel by defying a colossal giant called Goliath and killing him with a slingshot and a
bag of stone–rocks. Donatello and Gianlorenzo Bermini made each a sculpture showing David.
Each sculpture differs from each other starting with material, size, and style. One important thing to
consider is the material used to create these statues. Donatello's David is nude and made of bronze.
Definitely, Donatello made it to history with this first male free standing statue that was entirely
unsupported, also Donatello captured the emotions in the statue. Whereas, Bernini's David is half
clothed and made of Marble, also the energy seen on donatello's David is not projected on bermini's
David. Bermini was more of an action men, and projected David with an ideal body. Donatello's
David is shown more weak and incapable of causing the killing of a giant. I would say Donatello's
sculpture is more realistic than the idealization statue of Bermini's David. ... Show more content on

Donatello's David measurements are about 5 feet and 2.25 inches .While Bermini's David is at about
5 feet and 7 inches. The size is really important specially when working with different materials to

size statue. They both had different styles and were made in different stages in life, for example
Donatello's David was made during the Renaissance period, whereas, Bermini's David was made
during the Baroque period. Which have a lot to do with the way they sculptured David because the

David And Goliath Research Paper
In the story of David and Goliath, David youngest son of Jesse is the story of an army that was
bound to be loser against the great Goliath. Goliath was this nine–foot giant that was fully equipped
with good armor and was prepared to fight the Israelites. Goliath was a part of the philistine army.
And the Philistine army was prepared way more than the Israelites and they both gather to camp out
on either sides of a deep valley. While camped Goliath mocked the Israelites and their army. David
was sent to give food to the Israel army. In doing so heard Goliath William Harkey: William Harkey:

Originally he wasn't even a part of the fighting army. But came out and believed in himself and god
and achieve what an entire army thought would be grandest of tasks to completed. David was an
underdog. Underdogs have existed since the beginning of time. Like Gideon. Gideon was part of an
army that where full of men 30,000 plus, but was told by the lord that he would let them win they
had to first get rid of some of their men. So the lord told Gideon to tell any many afraid of battle to
turn around and go home. 22,000 men left the army. But that wasn't enough. The lord said to Gideon
I will help you win but you still have to many men. So he told him to take them by the water. And
near the water he was to separate them by those who drink the water by using their tongue to lap it
up like a dog will be in one group. And those who bend down to drink will be in the other group.
300 men used their hands to bring water to their mouth and lapped it like dogs do. Those 300 went

Compare And Contrast Casey And Goliath
In the two articles "Casey at the Bat" and "David and Goliath" there are similarities and differences.
One similarity is that both David and Casey were cocky or confident. In David and Goliath this is
shown in verse 38 through 39 it says "Saul had his own military clothes and armor put on David,
and he gave David a bronze helmet to wear. David strapped on the sword and tried to walk around,
but he was not used to wearing those things. Then David says I can't move with all this stuff on and
takes it off." This shows David is cocky because he says he can take on Goliath a massive warrior
with no armor or a sword he just thinks that he will take out Goliath. In Casey at the Bat it is
explained where it says "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said." This shows
that Casey is cocky because he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In David in Goliath it says "32 "Your Majesty," he said, "this Philistine shouldn't turn us into
cowards. I'll go out and fight him myself!"33 "You don't have a chance against him," Saul replied.
"You're only a boy, and he's been a soldier all his life." This explains that David wasn't believed in
because everyone was telling him not to do it because he wouldn't leave alive. In Casey at the Bat an
example is where it says 'They thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that –We'd put up
even money, now, with Casey at the bat." This explains that Casey was believed in because they said
that they would put money up for Casey to be able to hit and that they believed in him and that they
thought he would get a hit if he got a chance. The final difference is that Casey disappointed people
and that David made the entire Israelite army happy. An example from David and Goliath is where it
says "But the soldiers of Israel and Judah let out a battle cry and went after them as far as Gath and
Ekron." This shows that they were happy because they did something that they had been scared to
do and attacked the rest of the army because Goliath wasn't there

Katniss And Haymitch
Communication to Haymitch strikes a stark resemblance to the way we pray to our Father in heaven.
When Katniss was near death due to lack of water during the Games, she desperately begged aloud
for water to be sent from Haymitch. When there was no response to her plea, no silver parachute
containing the essential liquid, she started to doubt Haymitch. Katniss finally realized why he didn't
send her water when the book explains her thoughts, "Maybe he's sending you a message, it says. A
message. Saying what? Then I know. There's only one good reason Haymitch could be withholding
water from me. Because he knows I've almost found it" (169). This starts the construction of Katniss

Found within the book of Matthew in the New Testament is the parable of the foolish man and the
wise man. The similarities from The Hunger Games are portrayed through the stark contrast of the
Capitol and the districts. In this parable, "the foolish man" is depicted by the dictating Capitol, while
"the wise man" stands for the destitute districts. A strong foundation of solid rock is used for
building "the wise man's" house, which in this example would be the people's lives. Most of the
district members build their lives upon firm ground, meaning high standards, moral character,
humility, hard–work, and justice. They know that what the Capitol is doing is wicked and unjust.
This builds a strong moral character inside them, placing their houses upon rock, so when the rains
come down, and the floods come up, they will be able to stand steadfast amidst the destruction. On
the other hand, the Capitol is symbolized as "the foolish man" because of their unwise decision to
construct their lives upon loose and fluctuating sand. The sand is constituted of traits such as:
shallowness, pride, laziness, selfishness, trivialness and de–sensitivity. Therefore, once the heavy
rains come bearing down, they will simply be washed away. In this quote, the people of the Capitol
are explaining how they felt or what they did when a certain event in the Hunger Games took place,
" 'I was still in bed!' 'I had just had my eyebrows dyed!' 'I swear I nearly fainted!' Everything is
about them, not the dying boys and girls in the arena" (354). The example of selfishness and shallow
character is clearly depicted through this piece of dialogue in the novel. The selfishness of the
Capitol, and the good–heartedness of the districts, establish a likeness to the bible story of the
foolish man and the wise

Sticks And Stones Gladwell Analysis
Sticks and Stones
"Choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me... If he be able to fight with me, and to
kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our
servants, and serve us." (1 Samuel 17:8–9, KJV) A story that has an unlikely ending, one of which
most of Christendom and Judaism thoroughly believe. Yet, there is a antagonist who does not see the
story of David and Goliath as it is. But as tale of a boy who had every chance to win. Malcolm
Gladwell tells of his side, his view of that epic battle that happen over three thousand years ago. The
question that stands is this; Was David the underdog or was he as Gladwell states, a victor from the
start.
Gladwell is very versed in his writing abilities and work history. His history of writing comes from a
deep and well established background. As a former writer for The Washington Post, Gladwell
established his firm writing style in many forms of informational pieces. He has spoken about what

audience in by portraying what may interest most people. Being that the "underdogs" are actually

Essay Comparing Gladwell's 'David And Goliath'
In this difficulty paper, I choose to write about the introduction of "David and Goliath", authored by

Palestine and Israel armies, and how the end up fighting each other in the first place. Moreover, he
introduced the concept of 'David and Goliath" in his book, where he emphasis on how David, a
small shepherd can beat Goliath, the giant as six foot nine, which was one of history's most famous

Prompt #2 David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell investigates the psychology behind being an
underdog, and whether or not it is a disadvantage. Citing an academically accomplished student–
Caroline Sacks, Gladwell argues traditional understandings about what makes for a disadvantage is
not always what it seems. Caroline Sacks attends Brown University instead of University of
Maryland in hopes of having a more successful future at a more selective college: "But the problem
was, Sacks wasn't comparing herself to all the students in the world taking Organic Chemistry. She

In the classic story of David and Goliath, David–a small, agile fighter– battles Goliath–a very large

` David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell (Rough draft 2)
David and Goliath is a bible story about two armies, Philistines, and Israelites camps who battles to
win over a region known as the Shephelah. In the Philistines, there is a big six–foot giant warrior,
Goliath who is undoubtedly undefeatable. Whereas, on the other side, the Israelites did not have any
strong warriors who know have such courage to confront a giant like Goliath. However, the
Israelites had a shepherd boy, David, who overhears a conversation between his King Saul and army
about how terrified it was to win the battle. David goes up to the king to decide to confront Goliath.
During the battle, Goliath was fully armed and covered with heavy steel, whereas David picked with
little stones and his leather pouch of a sling. Goliath was all covered with heavy armor, which made
him slow. He also had a problem with his eyesight, he saw David in double vision. David took
advantage of that and used his clever mind and tried to shoot his stones on Goliath's face. After
shooting a few stones, Goliath falls down and David runs toward Goliath snatched his sword and
cuts his head off. David, who was an underdog happens to win the mysterious battle because he
looked at Goliath's advantage as a disadvantage, which helped him to win the battle.
The main idea of this story focuses on how people can misinterpret the advantage

they charged one–eighth of an ounce of silver for sharpening picks, axes and the sticks used to guide

Caravaggism In Claude Vignon'sDavid With The Head Of Goliath?
Claude Vignon's work called David with the Head of Goliath, is an interpretation of the artist
Caravaggio's original masterpiece, which shows art's familiar paradigm, every painter paints
himself. His motivation for creating this piece was from visiting rome in 1610, he was influenced by
Caravaggism, which was art inspired in the style of Caravaggio. "Some art historians regard him as
a precursor of Rembrandt." Painted circa 1620–1623, it is an oil on canvas, made in Paris, France,
133.7 cm x 98 cm (52 5/8 in. x 38 9/16 in.). "Vignon was a French painter, printmaker and
illustrator, and, in 1623, was one of the most respected, productive, and successful artists in France,
in which his patrons were king Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu." He was born into a wealthy
family and started art lessons when he was a young boy. A theme could be religious rebellion against
others who were seen as powerful such as Goliath, and were not fit to be in power.
David is holding Goliath's head in his left hand, and the sword in his right. His face has a nonchalant
expression on it while he is holding the head as if he is not impressed or phased by his decapitated
head. There is more variety with David's human–like face and Goliath's green and bleeding face.
There is unity in the similar color scheme, but the visual elements are varied in order to achieve
intricate and complex relationships in it. The piece is asymmetrical with david taking a large portion
of the left side, however there is

David And Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits
The plight of the underdog acts as the cornerstone of Malcolm Gladwell's book, David and Goliath:
Underdogs, Misfits, and the art of battling giants, and both Simon Caulkin and Janet Maslin target
the idea in their reviews of Gladwell's work. Caulkin, an award winning business writer and blogger,
takes an approach quite different from that of Maslin. As a much more experienced literary critic,
Maslin provides a much less supportive review of David and Goliath then that of Caulkin. Caulkin's
approach vastly differs from that of Maslin in that he takes a much more victim–based look at why
some reviewers disliked this piece of Gladwell's portfolio. However, these reviewers both provide
key insight into why David and Goliath struggles to prove ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Throughout the book, his carefully selected stories seem either almost deceptive in nature or overly
simplified. At first, Gladwell's analysis of the popular religious parable of David and Goliath seems
apt for the topic of the book and similarly the story of Vivek Ranadivé's basketball team follows
what seems to be an appropriate trajectory for the topic of Gladwell's book, however, it almost
seems as if he has begun to run out of proper examples following the basketball story. The first of
many questionable moves by Gladwell comes in his choice to look at Shepaug Valley Middle
School and the effects of classroom size on student success. Based on the limited data he presents,
Gladwell concludes that, "the evidence suggests that the thing we are convinced is such a big
advantage might not be such an advantage at all"(Gladwell 28). However, in his conclusion that
class size does not matter in predicting child success he neglects to look at how the idea of success
is measured following graduation and how the difference in class size may very well change across
racial divides and along the divide between private academies and public schools. There seem to be
multiple rocks that Gladwell leaves unturned in an attempt to preserve his

David And Goliath Casey At Bat Analysis
Case and David out line
In the poem "Casey at Bat" and the story of "David and Goliath" when comparing there are
differences and similarities shown. The first similarity is that they both are in a losing period or need
help in winning the game or war. In "Casey at Bat" it says "The Outlook wasn't brilliant for the
Mudville nine that day The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play" and in "David
and Goliath" it says "Saul and his men heard what Goliath said, but they were so frightened of
Goliath that they couldn't do a thing". The reason for the the first quote from "Casey at Bat" is
because the quote shows that they were losing and in "David and Goliath the quote shows that they
could not do anything they were too afraid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the evidence from "David and Goliath" to show the second difference, " But if I kill him,
your people will be our slaves", and for the evidence from "Casey at Bat" to show the difference is
"But there is no joy in Mudville – mighty Casey has struck out". In "David and Goliath" how the
quote shows the difference is by when Goliath says if I kill the Israelites soldier and David is going
to be the soldier, so that means he is going to die. In "Casey at Bat" how the quote shows the
difference is the quote is at the end and it doesn't say anything about him dieing and at the end. The
third and last difference is that in "Casey at Bat" it is just a game for show or entertainment and in
"David and Goliath" the people are fighting for a country and slavery. The evidence in "David and
Goliath" is is when the story says "your people will be our slaves." and in "Casey at Bat" the
evidence to show the difference is when it says "A sickly silence fell upon the patrons of the game.".
In the quote from "David and Goliath" shows the difference by when Goliath says the people will be
our slaves which is in the quote and the Israelis are fighting so they won't be slaves and in "Casey at
Bat" how the quote shows it is different is that when it says game and games are made

are many differences in the story and the poem and many similarities. The first similarity between
Casey and David is that they both had faith that they would win. David had faith that he would win
because David stated " I'll knock you down and cut off your head," this quote shows that David had
all faith that he would beat Goliath. Also in the poem "Casey at the bat" Casey had faith that he
would win. This is correct because the author stated, "Defiance gleamed in Casey's eye, a sneer

David was not afraid to fail because he had faith that God would help him defeat Goliath. A quote

This quote shows that David has faith that the Lord will help him defeat Goliath, which also means
that he is not afraid to fail. In the passage " Casey at the Bat" Casey was not afraid to fail also. A
quote from "Casey at the Bat" that explains this is the author stated, "That ain't my style," said
Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said." This quote explains that Casey was not afraid to fail from the
quote. In addition, there are differences between Casey and David for instance David was the
underdog in David and Goliath and Casey was the person that everyone thought would win. A quote
that explains the difference in the passage is the author stated, " "Do you think I'm a dog?" Goliath
asked." This quote explains that David is an underdog because Goliath asked him if he was a dog. In

In the book of 1st Samuel, in chapter four, the Philistines and the Israelites were deep in battle. After
being defeated in one of the skirmishes, the extant Israelite soldiers returned to camp. Upon the
soldiers return, the elders were informed of the thrashing.
The elders, inquisitive as to why God had allowed the Philistines to win, decided that the Ark of the
Covenant should be brought to the next encounter as extra assurance. The elders sent for the Ark of
the Covenant to be brought to the camp at Shiloh.
Eventually the Philistines found out about this new strategy (turns out, Israelites are loud partiers)
and became concerned. Concerned, because the God that struck the Egyptians with horrible plagues,
was now in the Israelite's camp. The Philistines did not want to be the example of God's wrath, so
they did what they thought was the best plan of action. They attacked the camp at Shiloh,
slaughtered the Israelites, and stole the Ark of the Covenant. (1 Samuel 4: 1–10)
Now, we all know that God is not a fan of murder (Deuteronomy 5:17) or theft (Deuteronomy 5:19),
so he did what Old Testament God did best, He smote them.

Consequently, the people of Ashdod demanded that the Ark be removed. Nevertheless, the Ark was
then sent to the Philistine city of Gath. Of course this caused the people of Gath to be next on God's

demanded that the Ark be removed. It was decided that the Ark should be taken to Ekron. At this
point, word of what's happened to the people of Ashdod, and Gath had already reached Ekron.
Hearing that they were the next stop on God's Philistine Punishment Tour, they quickly demanded
that the Ark of the Covenant be returned to the Israelites. (1 Samuel 5:

Donatello's Donato Di Niccolo Di Betto Bardi
The story of David and Goliath is a well–known story from Old Testament that provides imagery of
bravery and intellect overcoming brute force. The story goes that Jerusalem was being threatened by
an enemy army led by a giant, Goliath. To settle the war without mass death, Goliath challenges one
soldier to a one–on–one combat. Not one person would accept this challenge other than a young
shepherd boy named David. Armed only with stones and a sling, David defeated the larger and
stronger Goliath, after which he cut off Goliath's head and delivering it to the King. David's heroism
saved the city from a terrible battle, thereby protecting the people's civic and religious rights.

The marble statue shows and older, more solider type fully clothed David and is in a more Gothic
than Classical style. This David was supposed to go in the Cathedral on one of the buttresses.
However, it was removed when other statues got too big and it was deemed too small for the
Cathedral . After the end of the Medici rule in 1494, the city government acquired the statue to place
in city hall. [With an inscription on the strap this David is holding – if you are patriotic, God will

Verrocchio Compared to the classical style of Donatello 40 years earlier, the bronze statue David by
Andrea del Verrocchio is in a more humanist style, with a more delicate linear quality. Popular
legend holds that Leonardo da Vinci, then a young artist in Verrocchio's studio, served as a model
for the sculpture.
More like Donatello's David that than the more humble David of Michelangelo, Verrocchio's David
has a brash quality. However, while young, Verrocchio's David is several years older than
Donatello's David. He also not nude but is dressed in a jerkin and skirt. These qualities makes him
appear less vulnerable. Further, while this David still has a somewhat detached quality, his stance is
more self–assured and aggressive than that of Donatello's

David And Goliath
The story of David and Goliath is an iconic story from the bible, which many artists have tried to
capture in sculptures. The story goes that there was a young boy that tended sheep, and one day he
went to go see his brothers that were in the Israel army called Israelites. The Israelites were at war
with the Philistines whom had a great warrior his name was Goliath, he stood nine feet tall and was
enormous compared to everyone else. Goliath carried giant weapons and was afraid of no man. For
Forty days Goliath would go to the battlefield and demand to give him a man and let them fight each

But to compare the age I would say that Donatello's David is the youngest and most boy like of all
three. Michelangelo's and Bernini's depict David as a young man or someone that could actually
fight, they make him look muscular and more defined than Donatello's depiction also Donatello's is
the only sculpture casted in bronze rather than the other two being made of marble. Also the hair in
Donatello's David is longer and more of a biblical looking David than the others. They are all in
different times as well the first made sculpture was Donatello's and his David was made after the
battle of him and Goliath, but Michelangelo's is seen as right before the battle when he is looking at
Goliath. And the last made was Bernini's and in his David is in the action of throwing the stone at
Goliath. In Michelangelo's David he is just made by himself with one thing keeping him up where in
the others David's is in a action like throwing in Bernini's or is standing on something like in
Donatello's. The facial expressions in all of these are actually quite different as well if you really
look at them. In Bernini's his face is distressed and in concentration. But in Michelangelo's his face
is almost blank but with a look as if to no shock of the giant in front of him. And finally Donatello's
has a face of a grin or smirk where he has defeated the great Goliath and he is now happy. They also

Weaknesses In Gladwell's David And Goliath
Does weakness always means a disadvantage? If it is true, then does all the strength means an
advantage and will always be the winner? In Gladwell's book David and Goliath, the author used a
variety of ways to show that a perceived weakness can be a strength, even if sometimes the power
seems to be unbeatable. The entire book had suggested Gladwell's idea such that giants are not what
we think they are. The same qualities that appear to give them strength are often the sources of great
weakness. There are many different data and resources that supports Gladwell's claim. In the book
of David and Goliath, he wrote, "But the existence of these eminent orphans does suggest that in
certain circumstances a virtue can be made of necessity." (143). ... Show more content on

In the article Malala Yousafzai: Being shot by Taliban made me stronger, by Ian Johnston, he
provides another example that corresponds to the previous, "Terrorists thought that they would
change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this – weakness, fear
and hopelessness died, strength, power and courage was born." The reason why Malala eventually
success, is that she survived under the first shot from the terrorists. After the event Malala becomes
braver because she had once been put in a dangerous situation and overcame the obstacle. The
disadvantage of been shot in head suddenly transform to the advantage she gained of strength,
courage and determination. If weakness may not be a disadvantage, then strength may not always be
an advantage. "The extremists showed what they fear most–a girl with a book." The terrorists seem
to be scared and unbeatable, but their strength was hollow and it has its great fear inside. Malala
seems to be weak, but she has the knowledge to keep her strong. Just like David and Goliath, the
greatest power of the terrorists turn out to be the greatest weakness. The lack of power of Malala has
turn out to be strong. From what was been said, power and strength may not always be the

Analysis Of Aaron Sapiro And Henry Ford
Aaron Sapiro and Henry Ford confrontation on hate speech is iconic in nature. In Sapiro v. Ford,
Sapiro sues Ford for framing Sapiro in a Jewish conspiracy. This confrontation shows that aspects of
hate speech is disregarded. At the end of the case, Ford issues an apology, which is written by his
lawyer, Louis Marshall. (Woeste 1). This apology fails to mention that Ford never wrote it to begin
with, which is why Ford later writes a book about his court case with Sapiro (Woeste 1). Antisemitic
attitudes were present during this time, but they were "muted" unlike "the more violent expressions
of Jew hatred" that was seen in Europe (Woeste 3). Due to these muted attitudes, Ford was never
prosecuted for being antisemitic, until Sapiro sued him. Another factor is the fact that Ford was
praised in America, which in turn, helped him during his lawsuit in a societal method. Since Ford
was praised, Ford's attitudes and feelings were prevalent in society and were praised. Due to these
factors, the end results Sapiro had hoped for was a near failure.
In Gladwell's David and Goliath, certain aspects of this iconic story is disregarded, which is why
Gladwell states we have interpreted this story wrong. One of the issues Gladwell brings up is that
Goliath was ready for close to close combat, but was caught off guard by David's approach in
combat. David instead "reaches down and picks up five smooth stones" as his choice for combat
(Gladwell 8). Later on, Gladwell discusses how there was

The Battle Of Israel Argumentative Essay
"OBEDEDOM THE GITTITE"
Now Israel went out to war against the Philistines, and Israel was defeated and 4,000 Israelite
soldiers were smitten by the Philistines in the battlefield. The children of Israel thought they should

they brought the Ark of the Lord that the Philistines slaughtered 30,000 more Israelites soldiers and

them more than war itself (1 Samuel 5:1–12; 6:1, 21). When the Philistine called for the people of

Literary Analysis of David and Goliath
A Character Analysis of David and Goliath When studying any piece of literature there are many
different methods and techniques that can be used. The Bible, in specific, is often referred to as a
source of moral code, hope, and answers to social, ethical, and political questions. However, this
incredibly influential book can also be read as if it were any other novel. The events, settings, and
characters can all be evaluated for what they are, forgetting the notion that they are from a religious
text. This approach is called narrative criticism. When regarding to the Bible in this way, we do not
need to know any historical information or focus on seeking a deeper theological meaning. Instead,
the stories are evaluated in terms of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point, it is hard to side with either the Philistines or the Israelites since neither show desirable
qualities. Goliath, though strong and powerful, shows nothing beyond that. He shows no faith in
God and is entirely dependant on his fancy armor and swords. Goliath has no other source of
strength other than his physical stature and possessions. David, on the other hand, is depicted as a
character that is lacking brute strength and weaponry. We are told through the voice of Goliath that
he is "only a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance" (1 Samuel 17: 42). It is evident that David
is meant to appear as an average kid with no exceedingly superior or spectacular qualities. This
simple portrayal of David is significant because it sets in motion the development of realistic
empathy from the implied reader towards David. It is important for the implied reader to feel
empathetic towards David because even though David kills Goliath in the end, we are meant to view
him as a hero, not a murder. Building a connection between the implied reader and David makes this
possible. Though David represents a seemingly common boy at the time, he has several qualities
that make him stand out. However, these character traits are never simply told to us. Instead, the
implied author uses David's actions, decisions, and beliefs to

Underdogs Misfits Giants
Underdogs, misfits, and giants. These three words are the focus of Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling
novel, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants. Gladwell's
comparison of these words is strange. Their meanings have very little to do with one another, yet out
of the 171,476 words in the Oxford English Dictionary, he choose them. Sure underdogs can be
misfits, misfits underdogs, and even giants misfits, but besides that, the three go their separate ways.
Gladwell, through intensive study, innovative thought, and real–life comparisons, finds a way to
connect these foreign words, and that is what makes this novel so special.
To summarize the two hundred ninety–five pages of text found within this bestseller would be a feat
in and of itself if Gladwell didn't make such a point of relating everything back to his overall
argument. Chapters centered around Goliath, Vivek Ranadivé, Konrad Kellen, Emil Freireich, and
many more all enforce the idea that, "... effort can trump ability and that conventions are made to be
challenged." (Gladwell, 35).

unrealized advantage. The nonconformists such as Ranadivé are given the '... freedom to try things

toxic cocktail of drugs, the ten people that this book featured used their title as an 'underdog' or
'misfit' to their advantage in realizing that it's people like them that change the world. Similarly,
Wilma Derksen, David Boies, and André Trocmé all recognized something that no one else did.

One story that stuck out to me was the tale of Vivek Randive and his daughter's junior high
basketball team. Randive understood that the team's greatest weakness was lack of experience. In
understanding this weakness, Randive decided to introduce a full court press into their preparation.
He did this because he figured you didn't need to have experience in basketball to play tough,
suffocating defense. In most cases, teams would only use the full court press in the last moments of
the game. Randive unconventionally used this press throughout the entire duration of the game
instead of just the last moments like most previous teams did. The teams who played them were
puzzled as to why they were overmatched by such a team with lack of talent and skill. The main
reason Randive's team was effective in their strategy was because what they implemented a temp–

and experience and made up for it with determination, heart, and unrelenting pressure to win. Part

Critical Reflection
"Anyone can turn his weaknesses into strengths", I was reading the book David and Goliath by
Malcolm Gladwell, and the book was about a battle between David, the underdog, and Goliath, the
giant, and it explains how David defeated a giant by using his unconventional strategies. It also talks
about how some underdogs can overcome their weaknesses; in addition, it also explains how power
comes in different forms. Malcolm Gladwell proved his arguments by providing some real–life
experiences of different underdogs. According to Gladwell, an underdog is a person who is
underestimated by everyone to perform any task successfully. Malcolm Gladwell also explains
many other terms to prove his argument. I have experiences in my student life where I felt like an
underdog. I felt disempowered because of my weaknesses. I still remember the first day of my
English 838 class at College of San Mateo, and I felt so unconfident in the classroom because I was
not a native speaker. There were also moments in my college classes where I felt empowered
because of my strengths; for example, I felt empowered in my Math–120 and pre–calculus class
because I already knew the concepts of these classes. I had a lot of moments in my life where I felt
empowered and disempowered as a student, but learning from those moments helped me to succeed
in my college classes.
I felt disempowered in my English 838 classroom because English was not my native language. I
have been in the United States for a year now. Earlier I was at the University of North Texas for a
semester, then I transferred to College of San Mateo because of some financial issues in spring
2017. I registered for my English 838 class for the spring semester, but I was really worried about
this class. I was so nervous for taking English class because It was my first time taking an English
class in the United States. I came from a country where English is not a native language. Even
though I was from an English medium high school in India, I was so nervous because I wasn't sure
that if I am ready to take a college–level English Class. I was so nervous on the first day of my

Underdog: A Redemptive Poem
Jonathan Weber Jennifer Sigler British Literature 7 October 2014 Underdog as a redemptive analogy
Bang! Underdog flew smack into a sign while quoting his infamous saying "Nor bird, Nor Plane, or
even frog. Just little old me." He then recovered and said sheepishly "Underdog" before flying off
into the night (Underdog). Underdog is a heroic story in which there is a battle of good and evil
going on similiar to that of the great controversy. A redemptive analogy is using modern stories and
seeing how we can parallel those to the story of redemption. Underdog comes to save the damsel in
distress Polly Purebred when she cries out for help (Underdog). Jesus is our hero who like Underdog

would be a parallel to Christ. Christ does not encourage disobedience to the law but wants everyone

An Analysis Of David Slaying Goliath By Peter Paul Rubens
"David Slaying Goliath" by Peter Paul Rubens is an example of Renaissance art. This painting
depicts a well–known Bible story of a young Israelite boy named David who kills the giant, Goliath,
with a slingshot, and chops off his head with a sword. Rubens has chosen to illustrate this Bible
story at the moment when David is about to hack off Goliath's head with the giant's sword. In
addition, we see armor–clad soldiers rushing into battle in the background. In "David Slaying
Goliath," Peter Paul Rubens uses color, value, and line to illustrate the dynamism and energy within
the painting that makes it look realistic. In addition, these elements contribute to the sense of
excitement and anticipation of the event depicted. First of all, Rubens uses dark and light colors
throughout the painting to emphasize movement and fluidity. The most obvious use of movement
through color appears on David. David's bright red drapery is what draws our eyes in first because
David is the most important object in the painting. The different shades of red emphasize movement
because it accentuates the folds of the drapery, making it flow. The warmth of the red in his drapery
contrasting with the darkness of the ground gives off intensity and seriousness of the scene.
Furthermore, there is bright red blood on Goliath's forehead, where David struck him with a rock.
The red blood sticks out, making the scene a bit more realistic and exciting. The dark and light
colors used in the sky also shows

Why Did David Kill Goliath?
David and Goliath is the age old story that began numerous tales of the underdog coming out on top
and defeating the giant that stands before him. The traditional story involves David, a shepherd boy
with no formal training in combat, and Goliath, a Philistine giant who was the most feared and
powerful warrior among his camp. In a battle between the two, it is traditionally taught that David
faced Goliath with great courage and prevailed over him with just a sling, a stone, and, most
importantly, the power of God. However, this account is believed to have happened differently by
various scholars, groups of people, and individuals as well. Questions have arisen as to whether
David truly did fight Goliath or if it was another soldier as well ... Show more content on

One possible explanation is how the original Hebrew text reads that Goliath was killed by his own
sword after David forced him to bow down before the Lord. According to James–Michael Smith, the
founder of Disciple Dojo Online ministries, dyeing by the hands of one's own sword was especially
humiliating during that time period. This would also give reasoning as to why Goliath was not killed
on impact by the stone. God wanted to make Goliath fall before him in humiliation before he
defeated him (Smith 2). This would prove to the Philistines that God was on the side of the
Israelites. It would also explain another common misconception in thinking that Goliath was struck
in the forehead with the stone. The Hebrew word 'mitschath' is only found in one other scripture in
the Bible, 1 Samuel 17:6, in which it describes the greaves of bronze that Goliath was wearing. Most
Hebrew scholars translate 'mitchath' to be "forehead," thus establishing the age old story that David
struck Goliath upon his forehead (Smith 2). If the word is translated as it is earlier in the chapter
then it is possible that David actually struck Goliath in the shin guards and knocked him from his
feet. This is a much better explanation as to why Goliath fell face down in verse 49. If the stone
were to hit him hard enough in the forehead to cripple or kill him then he

Religious Symbolism In Beowulf
Beowulf, a man of God who goes through trials that make him braver than any other. The epic of
Beowulf, author unknown and translated by Burton Raffel, tells of the hardships throughout battles
that a Geat prince goes through. With battles between a monster, the monster's mother, and a dragon,
Beowulf is put to the ultimate test involving God's helping hand in winning the battles. Within this
time frame, most people live by the pagan religion. This changes when people begin to adapt to the
newest religion of all mankind, Christianity. The religious symbolism throughout Beowulf is
portrayed through Beowulf's legacy.
An example of religious symbolism is found within Beowulf's first battle with a monster who goes
by the name of Grendel. This battle is an example of symbolism because of the similarity between
itself and the story David and Goliath. Before his fight with Grendel, Beowulf swears to defeat him
without any weaponry or armor. He wants to have a fair fight due to Grendel using nothing but his
hands as his weapon. David also went without any armor because he felt unworthy of it as explained
with the following, "And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had
not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And
David put them off him" (1 Samuel 17:39, KJV). David went into battle with only a bag of rocks as
a weapon because Goliath was armored and had a spear, which then made a fair fight. Beowulf

The Makings Of Heroes : David And Odysseus
The Makings of Heroes: David and Odysseus A hero can be described as someone who goes through
various obstacles and is able to overcome them. Both the Bible and The Odyssey depict heroism
through two similar characters, David and Odysseus. In the Bible, David rises above all others
through his heroic qualities and by ending the war between the Israelites and the Philistines with the
aid of God. On a related note, in The Odyssey, heroism is demonstrated by Odysseus in the way that
he conquers multiple enemies, also with the assistance of the gods. However, heroes are not always
perfect and they often make mistakes throughout their journey. David and Odysseus are successful
as heroes because of the positive and negative characteristics that they possess, as well as their firm
relationship with the divine that ultimately assists them in overcoming their challenges. This
demonstrates that individual efforts were not enough to be a hero in their community and the help of
the divine was crucial. To begin with, the qualities that David and Odysseus share lead them on their
way to victory as heroes. In the First Book of Samuel, the strength and courage of David is
conveyed when he is the only one that volunteers to go up against Goliath of Gath, despite the fact
that he was not a soldier and had never fought a battle (17:32). Comparably, Odysseus is the only
one that is able to pass the test that Penelope invokes upon the suitors (Odyssey, 403–404) and even
with all the

Example Of Growth Mindset
All three texts, Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, "What is your own big plan?" by Obama, and David
and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, draws the conclusion that a growth mindset can change people's
outlook on life by learning life lessons, having a successful future, and being a happier person with
dedication. Changing someone's outlook on life starts with learning from your mistakes. Following,
by learning lessons it leads to being more successful in your life. Lastly, being successful allows
people to be happy. The inference is that a growth mindset can fix someone's overall outlook on life.
A growth mindset can provide life lessons and change a person's view on life. In the article, "The
Mindsets" the author expresses in the beginning of the story her connections with 'failure' that she
had as a kid. Then throughout the story she continued to express to the readers to take failures and
conceive it as a lesson rather than a mistake. For instance, on page 6, Dweck explains, "...my
research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your
life"(Dweck 7). This proves that if something traumatizes a person's brain it can change the way
they view something so they end up learning from it in the end. Also in "The Mindsets" the author
explains, "...everyone can change and grow through application and experience"(Dweck 7). This
demonstrates that through events an individual can change their thoughts and learn from it. Just
think positively from

The Intruder AnalysisEssay
In Andre Dubus's short story "The Intruder", Dubus tells a story of a young boy losing his innocence
to protect his sister's, while struggling to find his place between boyhood and manhood. The young
boy, who is named Kenneth, can be associated with many biblical allusions concerning the scenarios
he is put in. In "The Intruder", Kenneth's relationship with Connie is being intruded on and he must
protect it with his gun, the only symbol of manliness and power he has. In some ways, Kenneth can
be portrayed as a Christ figure because of his sacrifice for his sister like Jesus did for the world.
Kenneth can be seen as many things, but all he wants to be is a manly hero.
Even though he commits a sin, Kenneth does many things that can be ... Show more content on

Douglas does not find Kenneth threatening in any way – even when Kenneth shows him his gun:
"Whatcha got there?". "Twenty–two." "Let's see." "Better dry it." He briskly wiped it with a dry
cloth and handed it to Douglas. Quickly Douglas worked the bolt, aimed at the ceiling, and pulled
the trigger. "Nice trigger," he said. He held in front of his waist and looked at it then gave it to
Kenneth. (Dubus 223–224)
Douglas is accepted by the family and Kenneth is the only one left between Douglas and Connie,
like David was the only one brave enough to fight Goliath. Kenneth can also be portrayed as Moses
leading people to safety because he does with Connie when he kills the intruder. Kenneth's
experience can also be compared to the story of Adam and Eve. "Another way of saying "loss of
innocence," of couse is 'the Fall.' Adam and Eve, the garden, the serpent, the forbidden fruit. Every
story about the loss of innocence is really about someone's private reenactment of the fall from
grace". (Foster 49) Kenneth and Connie both loss some form of innocence in this story and their
introduction to real death and violence is the forbidden fruit – Kenneth loses the most innocence
because he commits a sin of murder. While defending against the intruder, Kenneth acts on what he
thinks is right, just like the biblical characters

Connect Malcolm Gladwell Analysis

  • 1. Connect Malcolm Gladwell Analysis Connect: On page 6, Malcolm Gladwell states, "giants are not what we think they are. The same qualities that appear to give them strength are often the source of great weakness." I knew that many people, in today's standards, take advantage of what helps them the most. For example, I think technology is our greatest strength, in relation to Gladwell's book when he talks about Goliath, because with it, we accomplish so much and we can learn something new with a push of a button. It is also a weakness because with a push of a button our society could crash or your identity could be stolen. Extend: Malcolm made me see the term "giant" in a whole new light. I would usually say my brother is a "giant" compared to me, or that the ride is gigantic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He writes "many people used to think that what defines dyslexics is that they get the word backwards– "cat" would be "tac," or something like that– making it sound like dyslexia is a problem in the way that the words are seen. But it is much more profound than that (pg. 100)." I knew that dyslexia was a hard challenge for those who have it. I, for one, could not imagine having it because I love to read. • 3. David And Goliah Chapter 6 Summary In chapter 6 of David and Goliath, the author Malcolm Gladwell illustrates underdogs can be powerful when face against with unfair rules because they can be fearless since they have no other choice, they will immorally break the rules with trickery. In chapter 6, Gladwell mentions the movement of Civil Rights in the 1960's and the idea that underdogs may act unscrupulously and immorally to achieve their goals since they have nothing to lose and running out of options. Martin Luther King Jr's and one of his companions named Wayne Walker was facing problems like being outnumbered and the organization they were involved with was losing influence . However, they learned from a march that tricky tactics was the key point.Just like the story of Br'er Rabbit, the rabbit tricked the fox to escape. So they started to bend the rules considered unacceptable by society and use all the resources they had , to achieve the goal. For example, King and Walker were using children that were still in high school as tools to face against the police, and tried to set up a picture of children being attacked by the police and their dogs to ... • 5. Comparing Gladwell's 'David And Goliath' While reading David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants by Malcolm Gladwell it became clear to me that many things I perceive in real life are not actually as they seem and small choices can have big effects. He uses stories from history as well as stories and studies he has put together supplemented by real statistics and information to shine a light on a lot of misconceptions people have with how the world works. He presents an alternate way to look at the world and obstacles we have to overcome during our lives and that our ancestors had to overcome. His stories directly tie into many of the concepts we have discussed in class I will be discussing how Motivation and Nature V Nurture directly relate to the disadvantages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How preconceived notions or in other words stereotypes stopped many people from taking on Goliath because he was perceived as invincible. However only David who was able to look past the Stereotype was able to see Goliath for what he really was, a blind Giant who was an easy foe to take down. Gladwell goes into depth to explain that while you would expect this not to be true the underdog wins more often than you would think. Gladwell also talks about how Goliath's own shortcomings were what failed him in the end, because of his selective attention he was only able to focus on David coming at him and not realize the imminent threat until it was too late. Part of this was due to his inability to see and part of it was due to our brains own faulty system of focussing on one illicit detail and filling in the rest around us automatically. Goliath was only focused on weak David coming at him while David had actually taken the time to fully scan Goliath and figure out his weakness. David overcame his selective attention and was able to beat Goliath who was perceived as invincible. Gladwell also uses history about the Impressionist movement in Paris's struggle to break past the stereotypes of the time to become one of the most successful art style ever. The Impressionist movement was broke and looked down upon in the society of France because they didn't fit into societies mold of what art should be. They broke out of the typical stereotypes of what art needed to be ; clean with no visible brush strokes vividly detailing a noble scene. Only because they did not get bogged down by the stereotypes of the time and kept pushing forward does the world now have impressionism and all the culture that came to the world because of ... • 7. How Are Casey And Goliath Similar In the poem "Casey at Bat" and story "David and Goliath," a comparison of David and Casey shows differences and similarities. Their first similarity is that they were both extremely confident. This is true because the poem states, "There was ease in Casey's manner as he stepped into his place; There was pride in Casey's bearing and a smile on Casey's face.", Also the story states, "When Goliath started forward, David ran toward him." This means that Casey is confident because he wasn't scared he was just acting calm. That proves that David is confident because Goliath was at least two times his size and he wanted to kill him. A second similarity between Casey and David is that they were both dutiful. This is true because the poem states, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A second difference between David and Casey is that not many people knew who David was, but many people knew Casey. The story proved this point when it exclaimed, "Who are you?" The man didn't know who David was even after David killed Goliath. Casey is well known because the poem mentioned, "Five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them on his shirt." This makes him popular because five thousand people were cheering for him since they knew who he was and what he could do. The third difference is that David won his battle and Casey lost his. When the story stated, "The bodies of the Philistines were scattered all along the road from Shaaraim to Gath and Ekron." it proved that point. The Israelites were fighting the Philistines and all of them ether died or ran away so that means that he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Difference Between David And Goliath Being disadvantaged at birth is rather painful and should be avoided at all costs. However, as humans, we have evolved over the years to adapt to both internal and external environment. For example, David and Goliath, a non– fiction book that represents the fight between the underdog and giant and advantage vs. drawback, shows that those who are outnumbered can manipulate his or her surroundings in favor with strategy. Vice versa, those who are deemed advantageous are more susceptible to becoming arrogant and cocky. Thus, advantage is relative to the environment and the people within. While the dictionary defines advantage as an antonym of drawback , reality has failed to meet our expectations, only to give rise to a group of people known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, my aspiration prior to reading David and Goliath was to graduate from an Ivy League. However, startling statistics from the book backed up by research showed that by attending a university with a higher average in SAT scores, I had a higher chance of dropping out from a STEM major during those four years. To clarify, the author introduced a concept known as the fish in the pond. For example, those who possess a potential to achieve high GPAs and test scores were classified as a Big fish. Likewise, those who have average grades were considered to be a small fish. Ideally, every student should be a big fish inside a small but friendly pond. Unfortunately, our abilities are relative to others, and the fact that our success largely depend on who we are competing with. For instance, a very bright student who graduated from a mediocre high school gets admitted to an Ivy league. He or she is probably accustomed to a friendly environment with little or no competition. However, an Ivy league, in this case, serves no longer as an advantage, but a drawback. As soon as the confidence declines, the particular student will no longer possess the needed adrenaline to complete his or her classes due to prodigy–like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Comparing Donatello's David And Goliath The story of David and Goliath is inspirational. It is about a courageous shepherd called David, who's rescued Israel by defying a colossal giant called Goliath and killing him with a slingshot and a bag of stone–rocks. Donatello and Gianlorenzo Bermini made each a sculpture showing David. Each sculpture differs from each other starting with material, size, and style. One important thing to consider is the material used to create these statues. Donatello's David is nude and made of bronze. Definitely, Donatello made it to history with this first male free standing statue that was entirely unsupported, also Donatello captured the emotions in the statue. Whereas, Bernini's David is half clothed and made of Marble, also the energy seen on donatello's David is not projected on bermini's David. Bermini was more of an action men, and projected David with an ideal body. Donatello's David is shown more weak and incapable of causing the killing of a giant. I would say Donatello's sculpture is more realistic than the idealization statue of Bermini's David. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 15. Compare And Contrast Casey And Goliath In the two articles "Casey at the Bat" and "David and Goliath" there are similarities and differences. One similarity is that both David and Casey were cocky or confident. In David and Goliath this is shown in verse 38 through 39 it says "Saul had his own military clothes and armor put on David, and he gave David a bronze helmet to wear. David strapped on the sword and tried to walk around, but he was not used to wearing those things. Then David says I can't move with all this stuff on and takes it off." This shows David is cocky because he says he can take on Goliath a massive warrior with no armor or a sword he just thinks that he will take out Goliath. In Casey at the Bat it is explained where it says "That ain't my style," said Casey. "Strike one," the umpire said." This shows that Casey is cocky because he ... This explains that David wasn't believed in because everyone was telling him not to do it because he wouldn't leave alive. In Casey at the Bat an example is where it says 'They thought, if only Casey could get but a whack at that –We'd put up even money, now, with Casey at the bat." This explains that Casey was believed in because they said that they would put money up for Casey to be able to hit and that they believed in him and that they thought he would get a hit if he got a chance. The final difference is that Casey disappointed people and that David made the entire Israelite army happy. An example from David and Goliath is where it says "But the soldiers of Israel and Judah let out a battle cry and went after them as far as Gath and Ekron." This shows that they were happy because they did something that they had been scared to do and attacked the rest of the army because Goliath wasn't there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Found within the book of Matthew in the New Testament is the parable of the foolish man and the wise man. The similarities from The Hunger Games are portrayed through the stark contrast of the Capitol and the districts. In this parable, "the foolish man" is depicted by the dictating Capitol, while "the wise man" stands for the destitute districts. A strong foundation of solid rock is used for building "the wise man's" house, which in this example would be the people's lives. Most of the district members build their lives upon firm ground, meaning high standards, moral character, humility, hard–work, and justice. They know that what the Capitol is doing is wicked and unjust. This builds a strong moral character inside them, placing their houses upon rock, so when the rains come down, and the floods come up, they will be able to stand steadfast amidst the destruction. On the other hand, the Capitol is symbolized as "the foolish man" because of their unwise decision to construct their lives upon loose and fluctuating sand. The sand is constituted of traits such as: shallowness, pride, laziness, selfishness, trivialness and de–sensitivity. Therefore, once the heavy rains come bearing down, they will simply be washed away. In this quote, the people of the Capitol are explaining how they felt or what they did when a certain event in the Hunger Games took place, " 'I was still in bed!' 'I had just had my eyebrows dyed!' 'I swear I nearly fainted!' Everything is about them, not the dying boys and girls in the arena" (354). The example of selfishness and shallow character is clearly depicted through this piece of dialogue in the novel. • 25. David And Goliath Short Story Anchit Sethi Professor Ninetta Papadomichelaki Basic Writing 003 (020) 16 November 2017 ` David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell (Rough draft 2) David and Goliath is a bible story about two armies, Philistines, and Israelites camps who battles to win over a region known as the Shephelah. In the Philistines, there is a big six–foot giant warrior, Goliath who is undoubtedly undefeatable. Whereas, on the other side, the Israelites did not have any strong warriors who know have such courage to confront a giant like Goliath. However, the Israelites had a shepherd boy, David, who overhears a conversation between his King Saul and army about how terrified it was to win the battle. David goes up to the king to decide to confront Goliath. During the battle, Goliath was fully armed and covered with heavy steel, whereas David picked with little stones and his leather pouch of a sling. Goliath was all covered with heavy armor, which made him slow. He also had a problem with his eyesight, he saw David in double vision. David took advantage of that and used his clever mind and tried to shoot his stones on Goliath's face. After shooting a few stones, Goliath falls down and David runs toward Goliath snatched his sword and cuts his head off. David, who was an underdog happens to win the mysterious battle because he looked at Goliath's advantage as a disadvantage, which helped him to win the battle. "Vignon was a French painter, printmaker and illustrator, and, in 1623, was one of the most respected, productive, and successful artists in France, in which his patrons were king Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu." He was born into a wealthy family and started art lessons when he was a young boy. Throughout the book, his carefully selected stories seem either almost deceptive in nature or overly simplified. At first, Gladwell's analysis of the popular religious parable of David and Goliath seems apt for the topic of the book and similarly the story of Vivek Ranadivé's basketball team follows what seems to be an appropriate trajectory for the topic of Gladwell's book, however, it almost seems as if he has begun to run out of proper examples following the basketball story. The first of many questionable moves by Gladwell comes in his choice to look at Shepaug Valley Middle School and the effects of classroom size on student success. Based on the limited data he presents, Gladwell concludes that, "the evidence suggests that the thing we are convinced is such a big advantage might not be such an advantage at all"(Gladwell 28). However, in his conclusion that class size does not matter in predicting child success he neglects to look at how the idea of success is measured following graduation and how the difference in class size may very well change across racial divides and along the divide between private academies and public schools. After being defeated in one of the skirmishes, the extant Israelite soldiers returned to camp. Upon the soldiers return, the elders were informed of the thrashing. The elders, inquisitive as to why God had allowed the Philistines to win, decided that the Ark of the Covenant should be brought to the next encounter as extra assurance. The elders sent for the Ark of the Covenant to be brought to the camp at Shiloh. Eventually the Philistines found out about this new strategy (turns out, Israelites are loud partiers) and became concerned. Concerned, because the God that struck the Egyptians with horrible plagues, was now in the Israelite's camp. The Philistines did not want to be the example of God's wrath, so they did what they thought was the best plan of action. They attacked the camp at Shiloh, slaughtered the Israelites, and stole the Ark of the Covenant. Ford, Sapiro sues Ford for framing Sapiro in a Jewish conspiracy. This confrontation shows that aspects of hate speech is disregarded. At the end of the case, Ford issues an apology, which is written by his lawyer, Louis Marshall. (Woeste 1). This apology fails to mention that Ford never wrote it to begin with, which is why Ford later writes a book about his court case with Sapiro (Woeste 1). Antisemitic attitudes were present during this time, but they were "muted" unlike "the more violent expressions of Jew hatred" that was seen in Europe (Woeste 3). Due to these muted attitudes, Ford was never prosecuted for being antisemitic, until Sapiro sued him. Another factor is the fact that Ford was praised in America, which in turn, helped him during his lawsuit in a societal method. Since Ford was praised, Ford's attitudes and feelings were prevalent in society and were praised. Due to these factors, the end results Sapiro had hoped for was a near failure. In Gladwell's David and Goliath, certain aspects of this iconic story is disregarded, which is why Gladwell states we have interpreted this story wrong. One of the issues Gladwell brings up is that Goliath was ready for close to close combat, but was caught off guard by David's approach in combat. David instead "reaches down and picks up five smooth stones" as his choice for combat (Gladwell 8). Later on, Gladwell discusses how there was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Battle Of Israel Argumentative Essay "OBEDEDOM THE GITTITE" Now Israel went out to war against the Philistines, and Israel was defeated and 4,000 Israelite soldiers were smitten by the Philistines in the battlefield. The children of Israel thought they should bring the ark of the covenant to the battlefield, so they can defeat their enemies. However, when they brought the Ark of the Lord that the Philistines slaughtered 30,000 more Israelites soldiers and took the Ark of the Lord from them (1 Samuel 4:1–10). The Philistine brought the ark of God to Ebenezer to the city of Ashdod, into the house of Dagon and set it beside Dagon their idol. God destroyed their idol and the Lord caused very deadly destruction among the people of Ashdod including the people living in its territory, by causing them to have a painful tumors or ... Finally, after the ark was in the land of the Philistine for seven months, the lords of the Philistine decided to return the ark to the Lord back to the people of Israel because it was killing them more than war itself (1 Samuel 5:1–12; 6:1, 21). When the Philistine called for the people of Israel to have the ark of the Lord back to them, David gathered together 30,000 chosen men of Israel, and went to the land of the Philistine to bring the ark back to Israel. • 49. Literary Analysis of David and Goliath A Character Analysis of David and Goliath When studying any piece of literature there are many different methods and techniques that can be used. The Bible, in specific, is often referred to as a source of moral code, hope, and answers to social, ethical, and political questions. However, this incredibly influential book can also be read as if it were any other novel. The events, settings, and characters can all be evaluated for what they are, forgetting the notion that they are from a religious text. This approach is called narrative criticism. When regarding to the Bible in this way, we do not need to know any historical information or focus on seeking a deeper theological meaning. Instead, the stories are evaluated in terms of how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point, it is hard to side with either the Philistines or the Israelites since neither show desirable qualities. Goliath, though strong and powerful, shows nothing beyond that. He shows no faith in God and is entirely dependant on his fancy armor and swords. Goliath has no other source of strength other than his physical stature and possessions. David, on the other hand, is depicted as a character that is lacking brute strength and weaponry. We are told through the voice of Goliath that he is "only a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance" (1 Samuel 17: 42). It is evident that David is meant to appear as an average kid with no exceedingly superior or spectacular qualities. This simple portrayal of David is significant because it sets in motion the development of realistic empathy from the implied reader towards David. It is important for the implied reader to feel empathetic towards David because even though David kills Goliath in the end, we are meant to view him as a hero, not a murder. Building a connection between the implied reader and David makes this possible. Though David represents a seemingly common boy at the time, he has several qualities that make him stand out. However, these character traits are never simply told to us. Instead, the implied author uses David's actions, decisions, and beliefs to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Underdogs Misfits Giants Underdogs, misfits, and giants. These three words are the focus of Malcolm Gladwell's bestselling novel, David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants. Gladwell's comparison of these words is strange. Their meanings have very little to do with one another, yet out of the 171,476 words in the Oxford English Dictionary, he choose them. Sure underdogs can be misfits, misfits underdogs, and even giants misfits, but besides that, the three go their separate ways. Gladwell, through intensive study, innovative thought, and real–life comparisons, finds a way to connect these foreign words, and that is what makes this novel so special. To summarize the two hundred ninety–five pages of text found within this bestseller would be a feat in and of itself if Gladwell didn't make such a point of relating everything back to his overall argument. Chapters centered around Goliath, Vivek Ranadivé, Konrad Kellen, Emil Freireich, and many more all enforce the idea that, "... effort can trump ability and that conventions are made to be challenged." (Gladwell, 35). Every person, whether or not they would like to admit it, has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whether it be the full court press or unthinkable use of a toxic cocktail of drugs, the ten people that this book featured used their title as an 'underdog' or 'misfit' to their advantage in realizing that it's people like them that change the world. Malcolm Gladwell is an English born Canadian journalist, author, and motivational speaker. He was born on September 3, 1963 in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His mother is Joyce Gladwell, a Jamaican born psychotherapist and his father is Graham Gladwell, who was a mathematics professor from Kent, England. Gladwell states that his mother is his role model as a writer, due to her willingness to be open minded and curious towards alternative thoughts and solutions to difficult problems. One story that stuck out to me was the tale of Vivek Randive and his daughter's junior high basketball team. Randive understood that the team's greatest weakness was lack of experience. In understanding this weakness, Randive decided to introduce a full court press into their preparation. He did this because he figured you didn't need to have experience in basketball to play tough, suffocating defense. In most cases, teams would only use the full court press in the last moments of the game. Randive unconventionally used this press throughout the entire duration of the game instead of just the last moments like most previous teams did. The teams who played them were puzzled as to why they were overmatched by such a team with lack of talent and skill. The main reason Randive's team was effective in their strategy was because what they implemented a temp– late that most teams and coaches were not prepared for. They used their weakness in lack of talent and experience and made up for it with determination, heart, and unrelenting pressure to win. Critical Reflection "Anyone can turn his weaknesses into strengths", I was reading the book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, and the book was about a battle between David, the underdog, and Goliath, the giant, and it explains how David defeated a giant by using his unconventional strategies. It also talks about how some underdogs can overcome their weaknesses; in addition, it also explains how power comes in different forms. Malcolm Gladwell proved his arguments by providing some real–life experiences of different underdogs. According to Gladwell, an underdog is a person who is underestimated by everyone to perform any task successfully. Malcolm Gladwell also explains many other terms to prove his argument. I have experiences in my student life where I felt like an underdog. I felt disempowered because of my weaknesses. I still remember the first day of my English 838 class at College of San Mateo, and I felt so unconfident in the classroom because I was not a native speaker. There were also moments in my college classes where I felt empowered because of my strengths; for example, I felt empowered in my Math–120 and pre–calculus class because I already knew the concepts of these classes. • 61. An Analysis Of David Slaying Goliath By Peter Paul Rubens "David Slaying Goliath" by Peter Paul Rubens is an example of Renaissance art. This painting depicts a well–known Bible story of a young Israelite boy named David who kills the giant, Goliath, with a slingshot, and chops off his head with a sword. Rubens has chosen to illustrate this Bible story at the moment when David is about to hack off Goliath's head with the giant's sword. In addition, we see armor–clad soldiers rushing into battle in the background. In "David Slaying Goliath," Peter Paul Rubens uses color, value, and line to illustrate the dynamism and energy within the painting that makes it look realistic. In addition, these elements contribute to the sense of excitement and anticipation of the event depicted. First of all, Rubens uses dark and light colors throughout the painting to emphasize movement and fluidity. The most obvious use of movement through color appears on David. David's bright red drapery is what draws our eyes in first because David is the most important object in the painting. The different shades of red emphasize movement because it accentuates the folds of the drapery, making it flow. The warmth of the red in his drapery contrasting with the darkness of the ground gives off intensity and seriousness of the scene. Furthermore, there is bright red blood on Goliath's forehead, where David struck him with a rock. The red blood sticks out, making the scene a bit more realistic and exciting. • 69. Why Did David Kill Goliath? David and Goliath is the age old story that began numerous tales of the underdog coming out on top and defeating the giant that stands before him. The traditional story involves David, a shepherd boy with no formal training in combat, and Goliath, a Philistine giant who was the most feared and powerful warrior among his camp. In a battle between the two, it is traditionally taught that David faced Goliath with great courage and prevailed over him with just a sling, a stone, and, most importantly, the power of God. However, this account is believed to have happened differently by various scholars, groups of people, and individuals as well. Questions have arisen as to whether David truly did fight Goliath or if it was another soldier as well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One possible explanation is how the original Hebrew text reads that Goliath was killed by his own sword after David forced him to bow down before the Lord. According to James–Michael Smith, the founder of Disciple Dojo Online ministries, dyeing by the hands of one's own sword was especially humiliating during that time period. This would also give reasoning as to why Goliath was not killed on impact by the stone. God wanted to make Goliath fall before him in humiliation before he defeated him (Smith 2). This would prove to the Philistines that God was on the side of the Israelites. It would also explain another common misconception in thinking that Goliath was struck in the forehead with the stone. The Hebrew word 'mitschath' is only found in one other scripture in the Bible, 1 Samuel 17:6, in which it describes the greaves of bronze that Goliath was wearing. Most Hebrew scholars translate 'mitchath' to be "forehead," thus establishing the age old story that David struck Goliath upon his forehead (Smith 2). If the word is translated as it is earlier in the chapter then it is possible that David actually struck Goliath in the shin guards and knocked him from his feet. This is a much better explanation as to why Goliath fell face down in verse 49. If the stone were to hit him hard enough in the forehead to cripple or kill him then he ... The epic of Beowulf, author unknown and translated by Burton Raffel, tells of the hardships throughout battles that a Geat prince goes through. With battles between a monster, the monster's mother, and a dragon, Beowulf is put to the ultimate test involving God's helping hand in winning the battles. Within this time frame, most people live by the pagan religion. This changes when people begin to adapt to the newest religion of all mankind, Christianity. The religious symbolism throughout Beowulf is portrayed through Beowulf's legacy. An example of religious symbolism is found within Beowulf's first battle with a monster who goes by the name of Grendel. This battle is an example of symbolism because of the similarity between itself and the story David and Goliath. Before his fight with Grendel, Beowulf swears to defeat him without any weaponry or armor. He wants to have a fair fight due to Grendel using nothing but his hands as his weapon. David also went without any armor because he felt unworthy of it as explained with the following, "And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him" (1 Samuel 17:39, KJV). • 73. The Makings Of Heroes : David And Odysseus The Makings of Heroes: David and Odysseus A hero can be described as someone who goes through various obstacles and is able to overcome them. Both the Bible and The Odyssey depict heroism through two similar characters, David and Odysseus. In the Bible, David rises above all others through his heroic qualities and by ending the war between the Israelites and the Philistines with the aid of God. On a related note, in The Odyssey, heroism is demonstrated by Odysseus in the way that he conquers multiple enemies, also with the assistance of the gods. However, heroes are not always perfect and they often make mistakes throughout their journey. David and Odysseus are successful as heroes because of the positive and negative characteristics that they possess, as well as their firm relationship with the divine that ultimately assists them in overcoming their challenges. This demonstrates that individual efforts were not enough to be a hero in their community and the help of the divine was crucial. To begin with, the qualities that David and Odysseus share lead them on their way to victory as heroes. In the First Book of Samuel, the strength and courage of David is conveyed when he is the only one that volunteers to go up against Goliath of Gath, despite the fact that he was not a soldier and had never fought a battle (17:32). • 75. Example Of Growth Mindset All three texts, Mindset by Carol S. Dweck, "What is your own big plan?" by Obama, and David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell, draws the conclusion that a growth mindset can change people's outlook on life by learning life lessons, having a successful future, and being a happier person with dedication. Changing someone's outlook on life starts with learning from your mistakes. Following, by learning lessons it leads to being more successful in your life. Lastly, being successful allows people to be happy. The inference is that a growth mindset can fix someone's overall outlook on life. A growth mindset can provide life lessons and change a person's view on life. In the article, "The Mindsets" the author expresses in the beginning of the story her connections with 'failure' that she had as a kid. Then throughout the story she continued to express to the readers to take failures and conceive it as a lesson rather than a mistake. For instance, on page 6, Dweck explains, "...my research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life"(Dweck 7). This proves that if something traumatizes a person's brain it can change the way they view something so they end up learning from it in the end. Also in "The Mindsets" the author explains, "...everyone can change and grow through application and experience"(Dweck 7). This demonstrates that through events an individual can change their thoughts and learn from it. Just think positively from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
