Throughout the 1920 s, before Women s Suffrage, women were viewed as inferior,
as well as subordinate to males because of many years of patriarchal dominance. In F.
Scott Fitzgerald s, The Great Gatsby, women are seen as lesser by the male
characters, yet show a great sense of power and domination over the actions and
storyline. The major plotline of Gatsby s love for Daisy and the American Dream
circulates around the mere factor of the power women have over men. Fitzgerald s
portrayal of women parallels with the 1920 s societal reflections on how men are
viewed as dominant, whereas women are treated as second class citizens. Daisy,
Jordan and Myrtle are portrayed poorly through their insouciant view on the world,
objectification by their male counterparts and their narcissism, but defy the

Musical Landscape . The pieces of music are being selected to represent different
landscapes. The image I have been is a glacier. This glacier and environment in the
picture is: dangerous, dramatic, cold, raw, jagged, rough, grand and mysterious. It is
my job to propose the work that represents the image the best. The two piece s
include: Nigel Westlake s The Last Place on Earth and Jean Sibelius Finlandia. After
analysing both pieces through the manipulation of the musical elements, it is
believed that The Last Place on Earth composed by Nigel Westlake represents the
selected image of a glacier more effectively. This is seen through the compositions use
Finlandia, composed by Jean Sibelius has use of articulation such as slurs and
tenutos (b.132 155) that portray an image that is too smooth to represent the
jagged iceberg. The articulation in this section illustrates an image of snow or
something not dangerous. However the use of dynamics in this piece create a
sound that is identical to the selected image of the iceberg. The dynamics in bars

Gowing up to spend the past 18 years of my life on the Chicago Westside has been
an interesting journey. I currently live in the Austin community, where there is a
population of 98,514 in 2010 and 85.1% is Black, 8.58% is Hispanic, and 4.43% is
White. Growing up in an area of complete violence and poverty felt like a game.
Making sure you stay on your side of the block, making sure you re home before
dark, and even making sure you never walk alone. Never. A lot of people get scared

Introduction:
In 2011, it was calculated that over 40 million immigrants lived within the United
States (figure 1 1). Among those forty million individuals, a reported 11.1 million
are illegal (figure 1 2)1. It is clear that we need to create a plan of attack to address
this large number of people living in this country illegally. There are essentially three
avenues that we could travel down in order to complete this task. Either the United
States could provide an easier path for citizenship for these people, or we could allow
them to stay in the country without becoming citizens through work visas or permits.

The first law passed regarding immigration was the Naturalization Act of 1790 that
was subsequent to the United States Constitution, which created the notion of
naturalization in Article 1, Section 8, Clause 42. Between 1870 and 1900, about
70% of the reported 12 million immigrants entered through the port at Ellis Island in
the New York Harbor3. These immigrants were primarily from Europe and Asia3.
However, beginning in the late 20th century and continuing on into the 21st century,
the majority of immigrants have been Hispanic, entering through our southern
border of Texas. Mexicans comprise the majority of immigrants who come to the
United States. In 2010 it was reported that out of the 11.1 million illegal immigrants
in the country, over five million of those individuals were from Mexico4.
Additionally, only thirty five to forty percent of Mexican immigrants decide to take
the legal path to citizenship4. There is a path of citizenship provided for these
individuals. Whether they can afford to apply or understand the application process
or not, we have provided a track for them.
