A Simple Barcoding System Has Changed Inventory Management...
Introduction Throughout history, a simple barcoding system has changed inventory management
forever. As the United States Postal Service required barcoding to make the mail sorting process
more efficient, grocery stores had a huge need to manage the quantities of thousands of items. As
inventory management evolved, the barcoding spread throughout supply chain management aiding
in less waste, storage costs, process tracking throughout the manufacturing processes, and helped
improve customer satisfaction. This short paper will go over how businesses have used barcoding,
the history of barcoding and some of the newer technologies like Radio Frequency Identification
and Global Positioning Systems.

For the purpose of this paper, it will steer away from most of the historical facts and stick with
how they tracked letters and packages. ( The history of the United States Postal Service, n.d.) After
a drastic increased demand for the postal services, the Post Office was looking towards
technologies to help it automate processes with postal sorters, address readers and an advanced
coding system for the times. By the 1970 s, the gained confidence in the service, demands
increased even more. Again the USPS had to reach out to the latest and greatest technologies. It
was early in the 1980 s when the USPS first purchased and used its first computer driven, single
line Optical Character Reader (OCR) which converted all of the data into a barcode. This became a
huge money saver as forward post offices only had to have a less expensive barcode sorting system.
( The history of the United States Postal Service, n.d.) As technology aided in the efficiencies of
the scanning processes, the USPS started giving discounts to letters and packages that were pre
barcoded. Having the letters pre barcoded allowed for faster scanning, less manpower, and allowed
the letters to bypass the OCR scanners. By the year 2000, 59% of all letters were pre barcoded, a
drastic increase of only 7% being pre barcoded in 1990. By 2004, as technologies continued to
improve and were able to now process 9,500

The CCC s impact on the state of Tennessee is undeniable as they helped build 98 lookout houses
and towers; erected 3,959 miles of telephone lines; built 1,469 miles of roads; constructed
387,208 check dams for erosion control; planted 36,091,000 trees; fought forest fires; and helped
build the first state parks . The CCC was involved with the development of 19 state parks totaling
108,608 acres5. These parks include but are not limited to Pickett, Reelfoot, Frozen Head, Norris
Dam, Big Ridge, T.O. Fuller, Booker T. Washington, Harrison Bay, Cove Lake, Pickwick Landing,
Cumberland Mountain, and Cedars of Lebanon. The designs and guidelines for parks in Tennessee

Post New Deal, the Tennessee Parksystem continued to thrive as more parks were transferred to
the State from federal agencies. Tennessee was slowly becoming a recreational destination to
those seeking water related activities. Tennessee had another park resurgence from 1971 to 1980
when it added sixteen State Parks and has continued to grow over the last two decades (TDEC
2017). The New Deal ideology of preserving Tennessee s natural landscapewhile providing public
recreation is still a main goal of the park system.
New Deal Era State Park Examples
Below are descriptions of three New Deal Era state parks that represent a variety of state parks
TVA and the CCC were involved with. While some of them were designated as a state park
during the great depression, others were deeded or leased to the state in the late 1940s and 1950s.
Each of the parks provide an insight to the importance TVA and/or CCC had on State Park
development. See Attachment A for more details on all 25 New Deal influenced parks.
Norris Dam State Park
TVA s first hydroelectric dam project was completed by 1936 in Norris, Tennessee. Once the dam
was completed, the facilities and associated lands were available for recreational development.
This park was one of the five recreation demonstration parks created by TVA in cooperation with
the NPS and CCC. TVA provided the land, some materials,

You want to go inside or just eat in the car? I usually eat in the car because so many people want
to talk sports or ask about my college plans if I eat at a table. I hate the attention and feel
obligated to be civil, but I must admit, it usually ruins my lunch. I think people forget that I m
just a kid trying to enjoy his senior year in high school. Everybody seems to know what s better

Travis told her that he had known Bella or, more precisely, that he had known about Bella, since
grade school. He admitted that he had felt sorry for her. Even if she had walked with a limp, she
had seemed so normal and happy until polio had crippled her. And she had become so sad and
withdrawn afterwards. He told Doris how Bella had stayed to herself all the time, always alone
and always excluded. He said that when he was a junior in high school, he had been asked by his
English teacher to help grade papers and he saw an essay Bella had written entitled, The Weight
and Measure of a Soul. It was a beautifully composed piece that quoted Chaucer, St. Thomas
Aquinas, C.S. Lewis and even Mark Twain. In contrast to the blatant plagiarism o her class

Corruption Of Power Essay
The body, mind, and soul of an individual are capable of becoming corrupted by power. Power
makes one feel as if that person was a God, which is a sign of the corruption in that individual.
According to Lord Actin, Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, states that power
can make an individual vulnerable to corruption. The second portion of Lord Actin?s quote
discusses absolute power corrupting absolutely which implies that absolute power can corrupt an
individual as well as the individual?s surroundings. This idea of corruption can be located in
fictional novels such as Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is a story about animals
dictated by a former animal comrade. The dictator in the novel, Napoleon,... Show more content on

The absolute power Hussein possessed led to the absolute corruption of Iraq for nearly twenty four
years. During Hussein?s rule, 200,000 people were killed or ?disappeared?. Another major dictator
was Adolf Hitler who dictated and killed countless human beings. Hitler?s philosophy of thinking
made him kill retarded, crippled, and disabled children along with homosexuals and Jewish people.
The power that Hitler received when he became leader corrupted him and made him kill six million
Jews, nearly committing genocide on the Jewish population. The corruption increased, with Hitler?s
desired to expand Nazi Germany. In addition, the dictatorship and corruption caused by power is
also expressed in fictional stories.
Power corrupting individuals also applies to literature and fictional novels. One example of
power causing corruption is found in a novel called Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm
is a story about animals ruled and dictated by humans. Eventually, the animals overthrow their
human dictator, Mr. Jones, and try to form their own government. After a pig named Napoleon
was declared leader, he gained power which caused him to become corrupted. Napoleon dictated
the animals and the entire farm throughout the novel. Napoleon considering himself as powerful as

How Did Florence Nightingale Contribute To Nursing
Florence Nightingale is often commonly believed by many to be a significant person who not
only improved nursing, but the Army and medical education as well. Born in 1820 to a wealthy
family she was allowed the opportunity to become educated to a higher degree and obtaining
extensive knowledge in statistics and math, which later allowed her to revolutionize nursing, as
well as establish nursing as an actual profession. Hospitals during this time were unclean,
disorderly, and an incredibly infectious environment for patients. Hospitals were not considered
places of healing, but places where people died, and therefore a place many people avoided. It was
for this reason that Florence Nightingales parents advised her not to enter this profession.

The Era Of The American Civil War
After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen
to rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the
hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early
1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new
laws to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D.
Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of
the economy with their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all
four were important, Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest,
becoming among the richest and most successful people the world has ever seen with the
exception of some royalty. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to
Total War economies. With all industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused
on the war effort, many relatively new industries grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North
grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly 75%. However, relatively small companies
controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin
buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad networks ever seen. The latter
parts of the Civil War and the early reconstruction saw the rise of a new

Why did a thirty second mobile app game advertisement catch so many people s attention during
the 2015 Super Bowl? The thirty second advertisement for the game called, Game of War which

draw America s attention, one of them being by using a women s sexual figure to promote the
recognition of the game. Additionally, they also use gender, media and advertisingto promote fame
and this is a clever way for the use of advertising companies. Advertising companies now seem to
be using attractive woman and men as their strategy to promote sales because they can use the
women s sexual figure and the men s powerful subject to lure people s interest. Our group has

It seems as if this was intentionally done to draw more male attention to the game. In my opinion,

The Awakening Questions
1.One parallel between the song and the book is they both show an awakening against
oppression. In the song the line take this pink ribbon off my eyes is showing the desire to wake
up . Later Edna realizes that she can become free by swimming, A feeling of exultation overtook
her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body
and her soul (Chopin 29).
2.The credo shaped her novel by introducing a theme of solitude. Throughout the novel Chopin
includes solitude to show the negative effects freedom can have on an individual instead of on
society. But when she was there beside the sea, absolutely alone, she stood naked in the open ...

The reader thinks Edna might just be frustrated with her husband. As the novel shifts to New
Orleans, it is clear that she has changed. Edna starts to feel motivated to take action. Finally the
setting comes back to Grand Isle, and it is the climax of Edna s awakening. It is also where she
drowns herself. Nobody know for sure whether it was intentional or not since Chopin said, Even as
a child she had lived her own small life all within herself. At a very early period she had
apprehended instinctively the dual life that outward existence which conforms, the inward life
which questions (Chopin 58).
7.Romanticism put a lot of influence on changing, and in the novel Edna is influenced by art to
transform herself. As the book progresses Edna learns to do what she wants even if it defied
normal social guidelines for women. Chopin makes this easy to see when she says, But when she
was there beside the sea, absolutely alone, she stood naked in the open air... (Chopin 124).
8.Freedom is found in the book through symbolism. The caged birds in the novel are a constant
reminder of Edna s own encagement to society. Edna gets brief periods of time where she feels like
she is free. Like when she learns to swim, A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power
of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body and her soul (Chopin
29). As Edna is heading toward the beach so she can drown herself she sees some of her

Review of Paddy Whacked Essay
English, T. J. Paddy Whacked: The Untold Story of the Irish American Gangster. New York:
Regan, 2006, 442 p.p
Throughout his career T.J English has written five books and a multitude of articles for the LA
Times, The New York Times, Playboy, and a variety of other magazines and newspapers. All of
his books (The Westies, Born to Kill, Havana Nocturne, and The Savage City) and articles cover
some aspect of the criminal world, whether it be the criminal themselves, or the act that they carry
out. T.J English was awarded the New York Press Club Award for Best Crime Reporting back in

Another misconception I had was that gangsters/mobsters controlled only corrupt policemen and
judges when in fact, they controlled people at all levels of the government, occasionally even the
president. Important characters like president James K. Polk, the Kennedy s, and several senators
had a relationship with Irish American gangsters that contributed to the politician as well as the
gangster s success. Their strongest relationships though, were with the police force. Becoming a
policeman was encouraged by the White Anglo Saxon Protestants because who better to take on
the dangerous, low paying job than a Paddy? (61) And so, Irishmen who often had grown up
with famous mobsters ended up as the majority of the police force; mobsters not only gained
more power in the local area due to this, but the stage was now set for corruption at all levels as
well.
In addition to the educational facts, I also learned some neat fun facts about gangsters and their
traditions. Old Smoke Morrissey was the first true Irish Mob Boss, and as such he was the one who
established the looks, desires, and attitude that we derive our stereotypes from. He started the
tendency of wearing striped suits, hats, big rings, and pocket watches, as well as having a well
kept beard and hoping to be accepted by aristocratic society through money. The famous book The
Great Gatsby was actually inspired by the mixture of glamour and danger that

Human red blood cells (6 8Ојm)
Red blood cells (also referred to as erythrocytes) are the most common type of blood cell and the
vertebrateorganism s principal means of delivering oxygen (O2) to the body tissues via the blood
flow through thecirculatory system. They take up oxygen in the lungs or gills and release it while
squeezing through the body scapillaries.
These cells cytoplasm is rich in hemoglobin, an iron containing biomolecule that can bind oxygen
and is responsible for the blood s red color.
In humans, mature red blood cells are flexible biconcave disks that lack a cell nucleus and most

Membrane composition
The membrane of the red blood cell plays many roles that aid in regulating their surface
deformability, flexibility, adhesion to other cells and immune recognition. These functions are
highly dependent on its composition, which defines its properties. The red blood cell membrane is
composed of 3 layers: the glycocalyx on the exterior, which is rich in carbohydrates; the lipid
bilayer which contains many transmembrane proteins, besides its lipidic main constituents; and the
membrane skeleton, a structural network of proteins located on the inner surface of the lipid
bilayer. In human erythrocytes, like in most mammal erythrocytes, half of the membrane mass is
represented by proteins and the other half are lipids, namely phospholipids and cholesterol.[29]

The erythrocyte cell membrane comprises a typical lipid bilayer, similar to what can be found in
virtually all human cells. Simply put, this lipid bilayer is composed of cholesterol andphospholipids
in equal proportions by weight. The lipid composition is important as it defines many physical
properties such as membrane permeability and fluidity. Additionally, the activity of many
membrane proteins is regulated by interactions with lipids in the bilayer.

Jack Nicholson Characteristics
Movies have played a large role in American society for a over a century. It is almost an
obsession compared to some parts of the world and because of this there have been many larger
than life individuals come about in the movie industry. In today s Hollywood, international ticket
sales have a massive influence on the movies that get made and how they are marketed
(internationalstudentguide) People become so iconic by their superb acting skills even if the
movie itself is not so superb. Jack Nicholsonis a true example of an iconic actor. The skills he
possesses and demonstrates on the screen are beyond doubt some of the best his time. What has
made Jack Nicholson so iconic is taking on so many challenging roles that other actors will shy
away from. Nicholson is brilliant with his roles of men that are angry, crazy, or the antagonist.
Many still go to see a film just because he is in it, even being the antagonist because he is so
widely praised for his skills on the screen.
When considering Jack Nicholson, one of the first things to think about is his use of anger in
many of his movies. Not only just anger, but the intensity he brings with his anger is what
makes you believe it. Anger takes over him, every inch of Nicholson is full of rage, you can see it
in his eyes, hear it in his voice, and see it with his body. Jack can be show anger in different ways,
for example, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo s Nest Jack plays a criminal who pleads insanity and

The Sioux Treaty of 1868 Violation The BLB was a response to the violation of the Sioux treaty
of 1868. Both, the Sioux tribes and the U.S. Government (USG) signed a treaty in 1868,
guaranteeing the Indians ownership of the Black Hills and hunting rights (Staff, 2009). However,
General Custer led an expedition of miners into the Black Hills that discovered gold in 1874.
According to Corbin (2000), the Black Hills stretch across western South Dakota, northeast
Wyoming and southeast Montana. Indians consider the Black Hills a sacred landscape because it
is the spiritual center of the Sioux nation. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills attracted gold
hunters who crossed into Indian lands, not caring of the significance of the land. According to the
History Channel, this betrayal and breach of the treaty led many Sioux and Cheyenne tribesmen to
leave their reservations and joined Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse (Famous Sioux warrior leaders)
in Montana. By spring of 1876, more than 10,000 Native Americans gathered in a camp along the
Little Bighorn River (UNK, 2009). The USG offered to buy the Black Hills for $6

The next witness had a conversation with the defendant. The defendant had told the witness don t

Why does the prosecutor have to go over everything? There was a constant repetition of the

The Transition Of Medieval And Modern Times
The transition of Medieval to Modern happened over a long period of time. The middle ages
marked a dark time in Europe s history, and the people were anxious to get out. The Renaissance

away from the Roman Catholic Church, and many Protestant religions emerged. The Scientific
Revolution also marked a change in medical to modern by creating new ways to look at the world

During the end of the Middle Ages, the Church became corrupt and started focusing on money
instead of power. Therefore, many reformers emerged onto the scene to help stop these corrupt
methods. Martin Luther was the first to go against the church, and he was followed by many other
reformers soon after. Luther, along with other reformers, marked a change in the way religion was

Courting And Courtship

admires as well, but the guy doesn t need to know that yet. As time goes by, ways of courting
also changes. In the old tradition, one cannot just approach a woman on the streets and ask for
her number the courting needs to be done in steps. They say that in the traditional way, courting
is like playing baseball. The man is said to reach first base if the woman accepts his proposal to
go out on a date for the first time. But it s really not that easy. If the guy is really serious and

Different Forms Of Literature Display Multiple Scenarios
Have you ever considered the different ways one s family makes an influence on how
individuals view themselves? Many different forms of literature display multiple scenarios where
the parents or sibling s perception of the world altar their own judgments of life or possibly even
oneself. Think for a moment, from childhood the person or persons that you are the most familiar
with most likely are the very people that you interact with on a daily basis. Most of the time, it
would be your familyor siblings that reside with you in your household. For example, a male who
has continuously watched his father abuse his mother may one day become physically aggressive
with his future companion or might even want to make sure he never puts his hands on any woman
based on how it affects his mother. The way a person grows up and the influences that individual
encounters can completely change the character of just about any human. Judgment from the ones
who you consider family occasionally alters more than just an injured self esteem but overall the
perception they have for themselves.

very prosperous before they came to their conclusions. These civilizations were very advanced
for their times. The Mayan Society and Their Decline The Mayans had a very intricate and
prosperous civilization. Suzanne Hopkins writes They studied the stars and developed
sophisticated and accurate calendars; practiced elaborate... religious rituals... developed
complex hieroglyphic writing... [and had] a mathematical system based on the unit 20 ( Mayan
Civilization 56). The Mayan society was strictly hierarchical, divided up into social classes. First
there was the king, then the nobles. Below the nobles was the middle class made up of priests
and commoners; slaves made up the lowest level. The society was prosperous until around AD
800. The Mayans decline is thought to have been caused be the large growth in population. There
was not enough farmers or land to provide enough food for the communities. In the reading
Mayan Civilization by Suzanne Hopkins it says, Food production plummeted, and famine forced
people to leave the urban centers (57). By AD 950, the cities were mostly abandoned, swallowed
up by the jungle. However, the Mayan people were still around, dispersed across Central America;

To What Extent Can Blanche Dubois Be Described as a Victim...
This play is about people who display cruelty and harshness in their treatment to others,
especially those who are weak and vulnerable. Blanche Dubois is the central victim of
mistreatment even though she had tried to make Stanley the victim. She displays her self as
fragile and moth like, dealing out her share of insensitivities that happened during her younger
days. Also because of her moth like image, the other characters see her as an easy target to knock
down and use her insecurities against her. Her figure and appearance also reveals her vulnerability
and delicacy. Slim figure, face of delicate, fading beauty All this and her clinging on to material
preferences, being reassured by alcohol make her a victim to ours and the other... Show more

He desperate attempts to reinvent her self in front of Steila and Stanley ends up with her
sympathizing with her self and allowing them to pick up on her disturbing past. On Stanley s
behalf they end up rejecting her like she rejected her husband and shortly enough she slips into
her own insanity. It was not just her self that put her in the lime light of being a victim; it is also
her new change of environment and people. Stanley is Stella s husband; he is described to be
very masculine and aware of his sexual magnetism. Strongly, compactly built . He is mostly at
ease with people however, if they lack loyalty and affection to him, he will bully them.
Especially women, as he believes them just to be easy conflict. It is seen in scene 3 that Stanley
has little respect for women. I said to hush up! This is addressed to his wife who is seen
emotionless and impassive in this play. As for Blanche how is fussy and at edge, she would be
very effected by the crude attitude that Stanley presents and so tries to hysterical take Stella
away from her husband. Stanley does not forget of this act of interference and makes him all the
more determined to be rid of Stella s charity case . The real reason for Stanley s bulling is that
Blanche immediately received all Stella s attention. How about my supper huh? I m not going to
no Galatorires for supper This made Stella dominant in power over Stanley and Blanche,
something Stanley was not used to. I put you a cold plate on ice .

Literary Devices In Catcher In The Rye
The world of adults is full of phonies and the only way to combat it is to be as innocent as a
child. Today, people have become so self interested that they fail to listen to everyone even
themselves. These are the points J.D. Salinger brings up in his novel The Catcher in the Rye.
Throughout the novel, J.D. Salinger s uses of voice, conflict, aposiopesis, irony, and metaphor
emphasize these points. The Catcher in the Rye is a story of a battle to preserve innocence.
The Catcher in the Rye follows the adventures of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden
has changed schools several times over the past years because he either failed all his classes or
harbored strong feelings of hate and disgust towards his school. Holden, during the book s events,
is 16 years old, quite tall, and already has some gray hair. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Holden coins this phrase for himself based on a poem that he heard during events that that
occurred before the events of the book. This poem is called Coming thro the Rye by Robert
Burns. The irony between the poem and the novel begins with the two different interpretations of
a catcher in the rye . Holden says that he sees himself catch[ing] everybody [children] if they
start to go over the cliff. . . I d just be the catcher in the rye and all (Salinger ). Holden believes
that being a catcher in the rye involves protecting and preserving the innocence of the children
around him. However, the poem Holden gets this interpretation from is interpreted by most to not
be about innocence, but rather casual sex. Holden now seems to understand how disgusting and
phony sexuality and adulthood is. Holden wants to save children from the horrors that come with
growing up, but the irony lies in Holden basing his own beliefs on a poem about sex. Salinger s
deviation from the traditional meaning of Robert Burns poem gives interesting irony that both
shows how mature and naГЇve Holden really

Finding Justice In Frankenstein By Mary Shelly
In the novel Frankenstein written by Mary Shelly the theme of justice was present for every
character. Specifically, Victor had trouble identifying what was right or wrong. Although he was
successful, he had a lot of setbacks that lead to his understanding and importance of such. Victor
frankenstein at first did not comprehend the nature of what finding justice was. For example ,
when the first victim was killed which was his brother he wanted to find justice. As soon as he
started investigating he had a sense of regret afterwards. This lead to his discovery that the killer of
William was his own creation: The creature. This resulted in Victor blaming himself for the deaths
that followed such as Justine, William , Elizabeth and Henry. Victor

Essay On Homotopy Analysis Method
Abstract
This research presents Homotopy Analysis Method to Fredholm integral equations of the second
kind. An analytical method solving linear and nonlinear equations. The Homotopy Analysis Method
provides an efficient and powerful tool in solving integral equations. The method provides a great
freedom in choosing an auxiliary parameter h, an auxiliary linear operator L,an auxiliary nonlinear
operator N, to analyze strongly linear and nonlinear problems. Application of the method to
Fredholm integral equations of the second kind is analyzed which gives a rapid convergence for the
solutions.

Social Meida Addiction Essay
On the night of my first Media and Society class, my instructor Ann, sternly stated (while going

use only class related reasons or taking notes. No social media networks, tweeting or sending
messages. I found myself thinking this is an adult college program; why was it necessary for her
to tell us that? Is there a problem here that required such a statement? Ann then asked how many
of us use Social Media (that is what the class is about, media and its effect on society) what we

As many as 1 in 8 Americans suffer from problematic social media usage, according to Stanford
University, not only are people obsessed and over use it, but they are actually becoming addicted.
There are several online social medias that people are becoming addicted to; the five most prevalent
are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube
, Dating sites and online gaming, in particular Warcraft. Anyone
who has access to technology, a computer, smart phone etc. and access to the internet is at stake in
this new aged addiction, regardless of age, race or gender. Social Media Addiction is now being
recognized as a psychological disorder all over the world, not just here in the U.S. In the 90 s
studies were focused on Internet Addiction (IA), but the new decade with its advances in social
media sites have now added yet another addiction to study.
Facebook seems to be the number one social web site that has the highest addiction count.
Facebook has 800 million active users, two billion posts are liked and commented on per day
and approximately 10 billion minutes (all together) are logged on the site each day. It is so
addictive for so many that is has been said to be as addictive as smoking. Studies have revealed
that people feel upset, fidgety and agitated if they are denied access to the internet and their social
media sites. Some even stating that they feel lonely, depressed and anxious if they are unable to

The Consequences Of The Goose Girl, A Fairy Tale
Goose Girl is a fairy tale collected by the Grimm brothers who s story line is about a young
Princess arranged for a marriage with a far away prince, and is deceived from her title on her
way to her bridegroom. Deceived and over powered by her waiting woman, the Princess shows
development, but our dreamer for this analysis is the waiting woman. Fairy tales are all about
embracing birth rights, and this is exactly what the waiting woman is deviant about: she broke
from the system and tries to work her way up a class that she is not born into. The waiting
woman struggles with her individuation, the process of accepting the daily events. Through
this analysis, the consequences of not accepting the life you are born to live will serve as an
example of a deeper evil. First, to begin this analysis, the archetypes are to be assigned. We will
start with the shadow, represented by the Princess. Accordingly, this is a same sex character that
at first embodies the elements a waiting woman should have: quiet, submissive, and compliant
because she had to give away and let it be as [the waiting woman] said (583). The Princess
carries the qualities that are considered to be expected of a waiting woman. The opposite sex
character that represents the animus in the waiting woman s story is the horse, Falada. The
horse noticed and remembered the acts the waiting woman commits, so she later on tries to get
rid of the horse, who later develops the story in an indirect way (583). The waiting woman s self
is represented by the casket dragged by horses idea she pitched in for the King. Her refusal to
become who she was intended to be led her to declaring her own fate. Moreover, to explain these
labels, the important events relevant to the development of the waiting woman should be
recognized and explained. The waiting woman is first set on her journey to fulfill her duties
beside the Princess after mounting their respective horses. On both occasions that the Princes has
been thirsty, the waiting woman declares I will not be your slave. If you want a drink, you may
get it yourself; I am not going to be your slave (582). To this, the Princess does not respond; the
second time around, as she bends to drink her water, she looses

Proper Wear of Shoulder Sleeve Insignia Former Wartime...
The original intent behind the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia Former Wartime Service (SSI FWTS),
more commonly referred to as a Combat Patch, was to show appreciation for an individual
soldier s support in combat operations. It was also, originally, applicable only to soldiers who
were assigned or serving with larger deployed echelons such as brigades, divisions, corps, Army
commands or higher. The Army Regulation (AR) covering the Wear and Appearance of Army
Uniforms and Insignia is 670 1. In Paragraph 28, sub section 17, the guidelines for the combat
patch are specifically detailed and outlined. The general guidelines for wear of the combat patch

This policy change is effective immediately and is not retroactive. In addition, the policy change
and guidance is applicable to Soldiers of all components that deploy during periods of service
designated for wear of the SSI FWTS, in accordance with AR 670 1, Paragraph 28 17. Originally,
for a Soldier to be authorized to wear a combat patch , the regulation required a minimum of
thirty days in the specified combat zone before approval of a combat patch could be authorized
for wear. Under the new guidance, this also has changed and states that there is now no time in
theater requirement to be authorized to wear the SSI FWTS. When a Soldier is initially assigned
or re assigned to a new unit, they are authorized and required to wear the patch specific to that
command on their left sleeve. Under the new guidance, when a Soldier is deployed to a designated
combat zone, those Soldiers are now authorized to wear the company level or higher patch that they
serve with on their right sleeves. One of the most prevalent changes is that the authorization of a
combat patch is no longer dictated by the Unit s Headquarters element deploying. It also no longer
matters how many times the Units alignment or Operational Control (OPCON) changes during the
deployment. When an element below Company level deploy, the Soldiers assigned to that element
are now mandated to wear the

Customization Of Firearms
From what I ve gathered out of this article is simply the following: Customization isn t
something that can only be obtained by modernized sporting rifles(Bolt Guns and AR s). With a
few rather simplistic steps any Gunsmith can tailor an old shotgun(smoothbore and rifled) to fit
a specific shooter in some pretty ingenious ways. First would be correcting the length of pull. In
my mind, I like to compare this aspect of firearms to a good compound bow, you can buy higher
end ones and if the draw length is off it simply will not perform what you expect of it. The same
principle applies to firearms, regardless of whether it would be a rifle or shotgun. Improper fit in
this aspect will result in sub par accuracy and more importantly, it will... Show more content on

The overall length of pull was short, the comb height was non existent and I would have to break
cheek weld all the time, and lastly the pitch was awful. The pitch is what I ll cover seeing how it
was the most problematic for me. If the shooter were to draw a line that bisected the rifle from
the bore to the Buttstock it would become obvious the problem with this old rifle. It simply was
not anywhere in line. It would ve been four fifths of the stock were below the bisection. Meaning
the recoil was pretty nasty and made follow up shots difficult. After reading this article, I ve
come to the conclusion of how to fix my old fabled Mauser, one being a new stock with more of
the bore being in line to the Buttstock. The second modification will be the porting of the barrel to
help some of the muzzle climb. Most younger gun enthusiasts associate a ported barrel directly to
a Glock. I ve personally had the same train of thought as well. The benefits of porting an old
Shotgun become almost ideal for any application. Most younger folks will probably seek out
porting to fit the bill of 3 Gun Comps or for use in the good old outdoors. Either way you cannot
go wrong. Particularly if the shooter is a small framed individual that has to absorb the majority of
recoil from slugs or other heavy loads. Not only will the shooter s shoulder forgive them it will
also allow them more longevity on the gun

Segregated Education, By Jonathan Kozol
Segregated Education
It has become common today to dismiss the lack of education coming from impoverished schools.
Jonathan Kozol an award winning social injustice writer, trying to bring to light how our school
system genuinely ponders their students. In his essay Still Separate, Still UNEQUAL, Kozol visits
many public high schools as well as elementary schools across the country, realizing the outrageous
truth about segregating in our public education system. Kozol, cross examining children
describing their feelings as being put away where no one desires your presence. Children feeling
diminished for being a minority; attending a school that does not take into consideration at the
least the child s well being. Showing clear signs of segregation in the education system. Diane
Ravitch a research professor of education at New York University, spoke about an interesting
truth, saying, The achievement gaps are rooted in social, political, and economic structures. If
we are unwilling to change the root cause, we are unlikely ever to close the gaps. The success of
our children s education is mainly caused by economic, social and political statue. If one does
not end the cycle the gap will most likely never close. This ties in with when Kozol cites Marina
Warner, an essayist and novelist, saying, There are expensive children and there are cheap
children, just as there are expensive women and cheap women. (354) There are some children that

Sexual Desires In The Awakening And Adventure By Sherwood...
Women in history have always been the less dominant sex. They have to conform to societal
standard and act the part that is stereotypically place in society for them. Women are
stereotypically mothers, wives and caretakers of their family. The Awakening by Kate Chopin and
Adventure by Sherwood Anderson are two literature pieces that share the theme of suppressed
sexual desires. Chopin work tells of a womanby the name of Edna, who is living in the Victorian
era. She is a mother and wife that is unhappy with the life she is currently living. To bring
happiness and pleasure into her life she starts to seek attention from other men, which leads to her

by a constraining society, as a result they become isolated, lonely and frustrated. Edna find

Edna and Alice are both isolating themselves because they cannot express their sexual feelings the
way they want to, due to societal standards. Edna in The Awakening is detached from people

society. As quoted, Once she stopped, and taking off her wedding ring, flung it upon the carpet.
When she saw it lying there, she stamped her heel upon it, striving to crush it (57). This is the

The Dynamic Partnership Of Richard Rodgers And Oscar...
The dynamic partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein are often considered to
have fathered of the golden age of musical theater; a distinct and radical departure in musical
story telling that had not previously been conceived. Their first venture, Oklahoma!, was
inspired by the 1931 stage play, Green Grow the Lilacs, by Cherokee author, poet, and
playwright, Rollie Lynn Riggs. Despite the success of this musical adaptation, one must consider
Oklahoma! in relation to its source material; although Rodgers and Hammerstein proved to
redefine the genre, the eventual product was radically different from the play on which it was
based. The changes made by the duo induce an entirely different tone, presenting the audience
with a whitewashed display, rather than Rigg s childhood observations of the social, legal and
cultural changes that took place in the midst of Oklahoma s impending statehood. Richard
Charles Rodgers was born on June 28th, 1902 in Queens, New York to respected physician Dr.
William Abrahams Rodgers and wife Mamie (nГ©e Levy). In his autobiography, Musical Stages,
he confesses that, despite being born into a German Jewish household, the death of his
grandmother marked the end of orthodox Judaism in his family (pg. 4). He continues, From that
time on, my parents, my brother, and I were Jewish for socioethnic reasons rather than because of
any deep religious conviction (pg. 4). Though Rodgers formal training of the piano began at age

Arguments Against Altruism
Altruism and profit are often at different ends of the spectrum when it comes to medicine and
health care as a whole. Altruism is the belief and practice of self less concern for others over a
person s own self. One of the biggest problems in our health care system today and possibly even
during Henrietta s time is that medicine and health care as a whole are so commercialized and
are only concerned with earning a profit. Henrietta s cells were stolen without any notice and her
family was not compensated for this crime. Eventually Henrietta s cells became so important
and eventually earned researchers millions of dollars. The theft of her cells had nothing to do
with Henrietta as a person, but rather the doctors and researchers wanting to make a dollar off of
a dead woman s cells. Dr. Gey and others did not know that Henrietta s cells were going to change
medicine but the fact that they did change medicine and no compensation was given to Henrietta
and her family show that many doctors are not concerned with their patients, they are more
concerned about their paycheck and whether or not they will be remembered in history forever.

Improvement Of Technology And Its Use Has Been The...
Improvement of technology and its use has been the foundation for American economics. Although
such innovation does create jobs, customs, and cultures that contribute to the American lifestyle, it
can also create pollution that harms the environment and brings about environmental injustice.
People focus on outcome effects of a certain project. Whether its main goal is for economic
gains, to help improve the way American people live, or even if it is harming the ecosystem in
any way, they will intervene. However, what people don t pay attention to is the tool that is being
used to accomplish such goals that can produce complications as it relates to the environment and
injustice that comes with the utilization of technology. This creates a selective exposure mentality
in the sense that if the tool being used has been here before the person was born or even if the
tool is used to support daily activities within the American household and lifestyle, then in no way
should it be harmful to humans or the environment. There must be a different way in which
American citizens can identify such potential dangers so that disaster can be avoided. One
approach is to have professionals in the related field expose such technologies that people believe
are helping them but instead are causing damage to the environment. As a previous low voltage

The Naming Of Trachoma, Inclusion Conjunctivitis Disease
The naming of Trachoma, inclusion conjunctivitis disease, has come a long way to reach its
present name. Its naming originated from the appearance of inclusions; foreign substances that are
contained within the cytoplasm of cells. Why trachoma? The name is a transliteration of the
Greek word for roughness because of the typical white lumps that appear in the under surface of
the upper eyelid which cause a roughened sensation. Not only has the naming of the disease come
a long way, the history of trachoma goes back probably as far as the existence of man. The first
documented evidence of the disease was five to ten millennia ago when humans settled together in

In some cases both phases occur simultaneously. We now know that trachoma is a tropical,
contagious infection of the eye which begins after an incubation period of five to twelve days and
is a major cause of preventable blindness in the world. According to a review published in 2013
approximately 1.2 million have lost their sight due to complications from the disease, and an
estimated 40.6 million people suffer actively. The disease is indigenous to 58 countries, primarily
in Africa, in which Ethiopia exhibits the highest rate of trachoma worldwide. Trachoma affects
children in particular since they maintain close contact with people around them and do not keep
their face free of secretions, yet the blinding effects do not appear until adulthood. According to
the description of the disease it is clear that Trachoma affects the visual system in particular. The
anatomy of this system contains several elements of which the accessory structures of the eye
include the following: eyebrows, eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus, and external eye
muscles. The function of eyebrows and the eyelids is protect the eyes; also the eyelids moisten the
eyes by reflex blinking. Within the eyelids are the orbicularis oculi and levator palpebrae superioris

Aristotle And Socrates
To answer the question, I will be comparing Pericles s, Aristotle s and Socrates s thoughts about
whether to think ourselves as friends or as strangers. Pericles and Aristotle conceptualize political
communities largely as associations of friends. Pericles believes that participation in democracy, is
in a way allows Athenians to become great warriors, to develop friendship and to have communal
beliefs. Friendship and community are integral to democracy. Pericles said, a man who is private
has no business in Athens. The idea of Democracy is that citizens get the opportunities to
participate in state affairs and help to make certain decisions. Athens is a democratic city, they give
equal rights and opportunities to their citizens to participate in political matters and let their citizens

Feminism Is A Conflict Theory
In this essay it will assess to what extent feminism has added to our understanding of society.
Firstly, Feminism is a conflict theory that believes that all religions are instruments set up by men
to oppress women with the set of beliefs and practices. There are many different branches of
feminism; the ones being evaluated are called Liberal, Radical and Marxist feminists. Feminists
believe that society is malestream and not mainstream as people believe. The first main flaw in
feminist theory is the fact that feminists only examine society from the viewpoint of women, they
do this because they believe they are in fact helping fight against the oppression of women but the
problem is that they do not examine the views of many male counterparts and therefore cannot help
us completely understand our society. The main differentiation between the different feminist
theories is the way that the oppression against women is caused. Firstly, Liberal feminist are
focused on human and civil rights and freedom of individuals, to summarise, they believe that all
humans should have equal rights within their society. They believe that society changing itself to
help women does not happen. Liberal feminists believe the status of women changing can become
a reality if laws that are oppressing for women change because it would create more opportunities
for women to prove that they are equal to men. Oakley explains a difference between sex and gender

The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System
Incorporating the Success of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline (TAPS) into the Building Regulations of
the States of Washington and California.
Abstract
When a large magnitude earthquake strikes, roads might buckle, dams sometimes fail, and
buildings can collapse. As more earthquakes occur, building regulations have been altered to ensure
that buildings experience minimal damage. The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS), which
transports oil from Prudhoe Bay to the Gulf of Alaska, had engineering in place so when the
earthquake struck the Denali fault in Alaska in 2002, the pipeline didn t leak any oil (Nyman,
Johnson, and Roach, 2003). The success of the pipeline came from its supporting structures. The
engineering used in the TAPS should be applied to buildings in areas that are also prone to large
magnitude earthquakes, such as Washington and California. California is home to the San Andreas
fault, a major transform fault, just like the Denali, and Washington is home to the Seattle Basin,
whose geometry and geological units amplify main and aftershock waves. Washington and
California should first implement better building regulations, and if the premise is successful, it
could be applied anywhere large magnitude earthquakes occur.
Introduction
Large magnitude earthquakes occur on plate boundaries and can produce hazards such as
movement along faults, landslides, and tsunamis. In North America, the western coast is an active
margin, meaning that it is home to earthquakes and

The Collapse of the Madoff Pyramid Essay
Our economy has been built upon for decades creating growth within the business industry.
Businesses provide jobs, finances, and security for individual s within society and is a main
source of what defines our prosperous country. Every business has an ethical responsibility to its
members and employee s and to society at large. Ethical responsibility is a major component in
which society needs to reinforce because it helps create principles, values, and standards, all of
which help to guide a person s behavior (Ferrel et al. 2013). Ethics help to create balance which in
turn will have positive results for the business versus negative results. It seems that no matter where
we look today, companies like Enron, WorldCom, AIG and many, many

Madoff had an exaggerated feeling of self importance. In understanding how he became unethical
within his business, it is important to gain insight into the history of the business and its
impeccable growth. Madoff opened his firm, Madoff Investment Securities, in 1960 (The
Madoff). The firm began honest growth when his father in law Saul Alpern, joined to the firm as
an accountant. During this time, there were a plethora of competing firms on the New York
Stock Exchange, so to gain a competitive edge, Madoff s firm began using innovative computer
information technology to disseminate its quotes. The technology his firm developed proved to
be so successful, that it became the NASDAQ (Weiner). The development of this technology
provided the firm with exceptional income and drove his firm to become one of the most
successful on Wall Street. Unfortunately, the firm s success was not enough for Madoff and in the
early 1990 s he transitioned from an influential trader to a fabricator of returns by creating the
largest Ponzi scheme in history. Madoff claimed to combine blue chip securities with derivatives to
hedge risk, which provided rock solid and steady returns, even in down markets. This easily sold
his client into investing significant amounts of money, and for some, their life savings. What
Madoff s investors did not realize was that, in reality, the returns for current investors perpetuated by
acquiring funds for new

Internal Control Project Paper
Introduction of Dentistar and the problem Dentistar, Inc. was formed in 1985 to provide dental
and orthodontic services to subscribers of their prepaid dental plans. This report examines the
western region s office, located in Los Angeles, and its issuance of excessive manual checks that
resulted in multiple bank overdrafts. Results indicate that only minimal efforts have been made for
internal control measures in this office and companywide, and that weaknesses have allowed the
Finance Coordinator to embezzle funds. There are many issues to be addressed, and several
remedial actions to be taken to prevent these types of losses going forward. Strengths in the internal

If any unauthorized transactions took place, the evidence is gone when the account is deleted.
Errors in segregation of duties are prevalent as well. The current tasks for the Finance Coordinator
position leave Dentistar open to internal control nightmares. This position is given responsibility to
consolidate information and calculate amounts for manual disbursements, prepare checks, maintain
regional accounting files, collect past due accounts receivable, organize financial data for audit,
and assist with human resources. Beyond that he is indirectly, through severe weaknesses in
internal control, given the ability to authorize refunds, issue payments for operating expenditures
and affect the general ledger. These duties and implied responsibilities effectively give him
custody, authority, recording, and review powers, which is a gross disregard for internal control.
Moreover, all personnel can create operating expenditures instead of one or a small number of
people, so auditors aren t able to trace expenses to individuals. Adequate speed of updating
information and open lines of communication are important for all companies. However, slow
reactions are causing control deficiencies. Regional employees are allowed to issue disbursements
that would take too long for the home office to make, but these transactions draw from accounts
with an unknown balance, and they have no

The Polo Shirt, The Smell Of Season Steak Sizzling On The...
Peanuts scattered throughout the restaurant floor; the smell of season steak sizzling on the
cooker. I can never get enough of Roadhouse grill food or my position as a hostess dressed and
khakis with a white polo shirt, and black slippery proof shoes. The country music play in the
background while I greet incoming customers, welcome to roadhouse grill! How many are in
your party? I always wear a smile because everyone I work with including my boss are polite and
entertaining. It was a crazy coincidence when I discovered that my college lover, Dustin
worked at the restaurant as well. Word spread fast to my boss then laughed over it. It will be 2
of us now and the other guy coming soon, the older Spanish guy with the beard replies. As I
walked the men to their table, I make small talk to everyone who comes in as I normally do and
make jokes to cheer them. It seems as though the Spanish men were in some type of construction
work clothing because their polo shirt has a company logo and small words above the chest
area, blue jeans and steel toe boots that have cement powder on them. It is not normal to see men
of this race in a restaurant like this and with company logo on. In Biloxi, Mississippi and
Lucedale, Mississippi there are only Mexicans, who did field work or did odd jobs. I noticed one
of the men obviously old enough to be my grandfather take interest in me by flirting. A southerner
never is rude unless forced to be, so I laughed and smiled not giving too much

The Effect Of Stock Market On Gdp Growth
Extensive amount of studies have been undertaken to examine the effect of stock market on GDP
growth. Some of the studies on this topic are Demirguc Kunt and Levine (1995), Levine and
Zervos (1993, 1995, 1998) etc. In theory well developed stock market should enduce saving and
efficiently allocate capital to productive investments which would later lead to increase in the rate
of real output. Stock markets contribute to accumulation of domestic savings by enhancing the
scope of financial instruments available to savers and investors trough diversification of their
portfolios. Dailami and Aktin (1990) think stock markets provide important source of capital
investment at low cost which should serve as an obvious benefit for the economy in general. In
developed economies with developed stock markets share ownership provides individuals with
probably the most liquid means of sharing the risks and benefits of investing in promising projects.
The main advantage of liquid stock market is that it provides investors to cope with liquididy risk
by allowing participants hit by illiquidity constraints to sell their stakes to othe participants who at
the time do not suffer form the same problem. These transactions are done in real time with
frictions in the market being at the minimum. The ending result of this process is that capital is not
prematurely withdrawn form firms to meet short term liquidity need. It is just changing hands.
Stock markets also play an important role in

Volunteering In College
Winston Churchill once stated, We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what
we give. According to this great leader, making money is not the only basis for happiness; he
feels that one must also give of one s time in order to live a more fulfilling life. Following this
ideology, volunteering in one s community would be a means to accomplish a more rewarding
existence. This idea has sparked a debate about whether students should be required to volunteer in
order to gain their diplomas. Requiring volunteer hours to graduate should not be considered
because being made to help others could lead to apathy, there is not a course of study for
volunteering, and volunteering could affect the monetary situation for some students. First and
foremost, forced volunteerism for high schoolseniors may lead to a greater apathy toward the
needs of others. When students are made to give of their time, they may show their resentment by
performing poorly. For instance, last fall I worked at a soup kitchen. One of the helpers had been
required to be there because his mother wanted him to see how privileged he was. This young man
spilled more food than he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Concern for others must be fostered at an early age. Pres school would be a better venue for this
service idea. Plus, there are students with disorders such as Autism who would have severe
difficulty fulfilling the requirements. Volunteering is not a feasible request of all seeking a high
school diploma. Though volunteering and giving back to the community are important, making
volunteer hours a requirement for graduation is a bad decision. Mandatory volunteerism is an
oxymoron. The want to help has to be present and should not enter into the realm of regulation for
graduating seniors. Each individual must choose what he or she gives and the life he or she

  • 2. A Simple Barcoding System Has Changed Inventory Management... Introduction Throughout history, a simple barcoding system has changed inventory management forever. As the United States Postal Service required barcoding to make the mail sorting process more efficient, grocery stores had a huge need to manage the quantities of thousands of items. As inventory management evolved, the barcoding spread throughout supply chain management aiding in less waste, storage costs, process tracking throughout the manufacturing processes, and helped improve customer satisfaction. This short paper will go over how businesses have used barcoding, the history of barcoding and some of the newer technologies like Radio Frequency Identification and Global Positioning Systems. For the purpose of this paper, it will steer away from most of the historical facts and stick with how they tracked letters and packages. ( The history of the United States Postal Service, n.d.) After a drastic increased demand for the postal services, the Post Office was looking towards technologies to help it automate processes with postal sorters, address readers and an advanced coding system for the times. By the 1970 s, the gained confidence in the service, demands increased even more. Again the USPS had to reach out to the latest and greatest technologies. It was early in the 1980 s when the USPS first purchased and used its first computer driven, single line Optical Character Reader (OCR) which converted all of the data into a barcode. This became a huge money saver as forward post offices only had to have a less expensive barcode sorting system. ( The history of the United States Postal Service, n.d.) As technology aided in the efficiencies of the scanning processes, the USPS started giving discounts to letters and packages that were pre barcoded. Having the letters pre barcoded allowed for faster scanning, less manpower, and allowed the letters to bypass the OCR scanners. By the year 2000, 59% of all letters were pre barcoded, a drastic increase of only 7% being pre barcoded in 1990. By 2004, as technologies continued to improve and were able to now process 9,500 ... The New Deal ideology of preserving Tennessee s natural landscapewhile providing public recreation is still a main goal of the park system. Power makes one feel as if that person was a God, which is a sign of the corruption in that individual. The second portion of Lord Actin?s quote discusses absolute power corrupting absolutely which implies that absolute power can corrupt an individual as well as the individual?s surroundings. • 7. The Era Of The American Civil War After the American Civil War, a laissez faire government allowed for a new class of businessmen to rise to power: those who dominated an entire industry, sometimes several markets. They were the hallmark of the so called Gilded Age, which lasted from the end of reconstruction until the early 1900s. These men, known as Robber Barons, shaped the American economy, necessitating new laws to be signed to limit their power . Although there were only four main Barons (John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan), they controlled much of the economy with their four respective trades: Oil, steel, railroads, and banking . Although all four were important, Rockefeller and Carnegie stand head and shoulders above the rest, becoming among the richest and most successful people the world has ever seen with the exception of some royalty. During the Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy converted to Total War economies. With all industries, from manufacturing to agriculture to textiles, focused on the war effort, many relatively new industries grew surpassingly large. Railroads in the North grew by around 16,000 miles, an increase of nearly 75%. However, relatively small companies controlled relatively small sections of track privately. This set the stage for Vanderbilt to begin buying up companies until he controlled one of the largest railroad networks ever seen. Another misconception I had was that gangsters/mobsters controlled only corrupt policemen and judges when in fact, they controlled people at all levels of the government, occasionally even the president. Important characters like president James K. Their strongest relationships though, were with the police force. Becoming a policeman was encouraged by the White Anglo Saxon Protestants because who better to take on the dangerous, low paying job than a Paddy? (61) And so, Irishmen who often had grown up with famous mobsters ended up as the majority of the police force; mobsters not only gained more power in the local area due to this, but the stage was now set for corruption at all levels as well. In addition to the educational facts, I also learned some neat fun facts about gangsters and their traditions. Both, the Sioux tribes and the U.S. Government (USG) signed a treaty in 1868, guaranteeing the Indians ownership of the Black Hills and hunting rights (Staff, 2009). However, General Custer led an expedition of miners into the Black Hills that discovered gold in 1874. According to Corbin (2000), the Black Hills stretch across western South Dakota, northeast Wyoming and southeast Montana. Indians consider the Black Hills a sacred landscape because it is the spiritual center of the Sioux nation. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills attracted gold hunters who crossed into Indian lands, not caring of the significance of the land. According to the History Channel, this betrayal and breach of the treaty led many Sioux and Cheyenne tribesmen to leave their reservations and joined Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse (Famous Sioux warrior leaders) in Montana. [and had] a mathematical system based on the unit 20 ( Mayan Civilization 56). The Mayan society was strictly hierarchical, divided up into social classes. First there was the king, then the nobles. Below the nobles was the middle class made up of priests and commoners; slaves made up the lowest level. The society was prosperous until around AD 800. The Mayans decline is thought to have been caused be the large growth in population. There was not enough farmers or land to provide enough food for the communities. In the reading Mayan Civilization by Suzanne Hopkins it says, Food production plummeted, and famine forced people to leave the urban centers (57). By AD 950, the cities were mostly abandoned, swallowed up by the jungle. However, the Mayan people were still around, dispersed across Central America; they are still ... This play is about people who display cruelty and harshness in their treatment to others, especially those who are weak and vulnerable. Blanche Dubois is the central victim of mistreatment even though she had tried to make Stanley the victim. She displays her self as fragile and moth like, dealing out her share of insensitivities that happened during her younger days. Also because of her moth like image, the other characters see her as an easy target to knock down and use her insecurities against her. Her figure and appearance also reveals her vulnerability and delicacy. Stanley is Stella s husband; he is described to be very masculine and aware of his sexual magnetism. Strongly, compactly built . He is mostly at ease with people however, if they lack loyalty and affection to him, he will bully them. Especially women, as he believes them just to be easy conflict. It is seen in scene 3 that Stanley has little respect for women. I said to hush up! This is addressed to his wife who is seen emotionless and impassive in this play. As for Blanche how is fussy and at edge, she would be very effected by the crude attitude that Stanley presents and so tries to hysterical take Stella away from her husband. Stanley does not forget of this act of interference and makes him all the more determined to be rid of Stella s charity case . The real reason for Stanley s bulling is that Blanche immediately received all Stella s attention. How about my supper huh? • 22. Literary Devices In Catcher In The Rye The world of adults is full of phonies and the only way to combat it is to be as innocent as a child. Today, people have become so self interested that they fail to listen to everyone even themselves. These are the points J.D. Salinger brings up in his novel The Catcher in the Rye. Throughout the novel, J.D. Salinger s uses of voice, conflict, aposiopesis, irony, and metaphor emphasize these points. The Catcher in the Rye is a story of a battle to preserve innocence. The Catcher in the Rye follows the adventures of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield. Holden has changed schools several times over the past years because he either failed all his classes or harbored strong feelings of hate and disgust towards his school. Holden, during the book s events, is 16 years old, quite tall, and already has some gray hair. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holden coins this phrase for himself based on a poem that he heard during events that that occurred before the events of the book. This poem is called Coming thro the Rye by Robert Burns. The irony between the poem and the novel begins with the two different interpretations of a catcher in the rye . Holden says that he sees himself catch[ing] everybody [children] if they start to go over the cliff. . . I d just be the catcher in the rye and all (Salinger ). Holden believes that being a catcher in the rye involves protecting and preserving the innocence of the children around him. However, the poem Holden gets this interpretation from is interpreted by most to not be about innocence, but rather casual sex. Holden now seems to understand how disgusting and phony sexuality and adulthood is. Holden wants to save children from the horrors that come with growing up, but the irony lies in Holden basing his own beliefs on a poem about sex. • 27. The Consequences Of The Goose Girl, A Fairy Tale Goose Girl is a fairy tale collected by the Grimm brothers who s story line is about a young Princess arranged for a marriage with a far away prince, and is deceived from her title on her way to her bridegroom. Deceived and over powered by her waiting woman, the Princess shows development, but our dreamer for this analysis is the waiting woman. Fairy tales are all about embracing birth rights, and this is exactly what the waiting woman is deviant about: she broke from the system and tries to work her way up a class that she is not born into. The waiting woman struggles with her individuation, the process of accepting the daily events. Through this analysis, the consequences of not accepting the life you are born to live will serve as an example of a deeper evil. First, to begin this analysis, the archetypes are to be assigned. We will start with the shadow, represented by the Princess. Accordingly, this is a same sex character that at first embodies the elements a waiting woman should have: quiet, submissive, and compliant because she had to give away and let it be as [the waiting woman] said (583). The Princess carries the qualities that are considered to be expected of a waiting woman. The opposite sex character that represents the animus in the waiting woman s story is the horse, Falada. The horse noticed and remembered the acts the waiting woman commits, so she later on tries to get rid of the horse, who later develops the story in an indirect way (583). The waiting woman s self is represented by the casket dragged by horses idea she pitched in for the King. Her refusal to become who she was intended to be led her to declaring her own fate. Moreover, to explain these labels, the important events relevant to the development of the waiting woman should be recognized and explained. The waiting woman is first set on her journey to fulfill her duties beside the Princess after mounting their respective horses. On both occasions that the Princes has been thirsty, the waiting woman declares I will not be your slave. If you want a drink, you may get it yourself; I am not going to be your slave (582). Originally, for a Soldier to be authorized to wear a combat patch , the regulation required a minimum of thirty days in the specified combat zone before approval of a combat patch could be authorized for wear. Under the new guidance, this also has changed and states that there is now no time in theater requirement to be authorized to wear the SSI FWTS. When a Soldier is initially assigned or re assigned to a new unit, they are authorized and required to wear the patch specific to that command on their left sleeve. Under the new guidance, when a Soldier is deployed to a designated combat zone, those Soldiers are now authorized to wear the company level or higher patch that they serve with on their right sleeves. One of the most prevalent changes is that the authorization of a combat patch is no longer dictated by the Unit s Headquarters element deploying. Customization Of Firearms From what I ve gathered out of this article is simply the following: Customization isn t something that can only be obtained by modernized sporting rifles(Bolt Guns and AR s). With a few rather simplistic steps any Gunsmith can tailor an old shotgun(smoothbore and rifled) to fit a specific shooter in some pretty ingenious ways. First would be correcting the length of pull. In my mind, I like to compare this aspect of firearms to a good compound bow, you can buy higher end ones and if the draw length is off it simply will not perform what you expect of it. The same principle applies to firearms, regardless of whether it would be a rifle or shotgun. Improper fit in this aspect will result in sub par accuracy and more importantly, it will... If the shooter were to draw a line that bisected the rifle from the bore to the Buttstock it would become obvious the problem with this old rifle. It simply was not anywhere in line. It would ve been four fifths of the stock were below the bisection. Meaning the recoil was pretty nasty and made follow up shots difficult. After reading this article, I ve come to the conclusion of how to fix my old fabled Mauser, one being a new stock with more of the bore being in line to the Buttstock. The second modification will be the porting of the barrel to help some of the muzzle climb. Most younger gun enthusiasts associate a ported barrel directly to a Glock. I ve personally had the same train of thought as well. The benefits of porting an old Shotgun become almost ideal for any application. Most younger folks will probably seek out porting to fit the bill of 3 Gun Comps or for use in the good old outdoors. Either way you cannot go wrong. If one does not end the cycle the gap will most likely never close. The dynamic partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein are often considered to have fathered of the golden age of musical theater; a distinct and radical departure in musical story telling that had not previously been conceived. Their first venture, Oklahoma!, was inspired by the 1931 stage play, Green Grow the Lilacs, by Cherokee author, poet, and playwright, Rollie Lynn Riggs. Despite the success of this musical adaptation, one must consider Oklahoma! in relation to its source material; although Rodgers and Hammerstein proved to redefine the genre, the eventual product was radically different from the play on which it was based. The changes made by the duo induce an entirely different tone, presenting the audience with a whitewashed display, rather than Rigg s childhood observations of the social, legal and cultural changes that took place in the midst of Oklahoma s impending statehood. Altruism is the belief and practice of self less concern for others over a person s own self. Henrietta s cells were stolen without any notice and her family was not compensated for this crime. Dr. Gey and others did not know that Henrietta s cells were going to change medicine but the fact that they did change medicine and no compensation was given to Henrietta and her family show that many doctors are not concerned with their patients, they are more concerned about their paycheck and whether or not they will be remembered in history forever. Firstly, Feminism is a conflict theory that believes that all religions are instruments set up by men to oppress women with the set of beliefs and practices. There are many different branches of feminism; the ones being evaluated are called Liberal, Radical and Marxist feminists. Feminists believe that society is malestream and not mainstream as people believe. The first main flaw in feminist theory is the fact that feminists only examine society from the viewpoint of women, they do this because they believe they are in fact helping fight against the oppression of women but the problem is that they do not examine the views of many male counterparts and therefore cannot help us completely understand our society. The main differentiation between the different feminist theories is the way that the oppression against women is caused. Firstly, Liberal feminist are focused on human and civil rights and freedom of individuals, to summarise, they believe that all humans should have equal rights within their society. They believe that society changing itself to help women does not happen. Liberal feminists believe the status of women changing can become a reality if laws that are oppressing for women change because it would create more opportunities for women to prove that they are equal to men. • 41. The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System Incorporating the Success of the Trans Alaskan Pipeline (TAPS) into the Building Regulations of the States of Washington and California. Abstract When a large magnitude earthquake strikes, roads might buckle, dams sometimes fail, and buildings can collapse. As more earthquakes occur, building regulations have been altered to ensure that buildings experience minimal damage. The Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS), which transports oil from Prudhoe Bay to the Gulf of Alaska, had engineering in place so when the earthquake struck the Denali fault in Alaska in 2002, the pipeline didn t leak any oil (Nyman, Johnson, and Roach, 2003). The success of the pipeline came from its supporting structures. The engineering used in the TAPS should be applied to buildings in areas that are also prone to large magnitude earthquakes, such as Washington and California. California is home to the San Andreas fault, a major transform fault, just like the Denali, and Washington is home to the Seattle Basin, whose geometry and geological units amplify main and aftershock waves. Washington and California should first implement better building regulations, and if the premise is successful, it could be applied anywhere large magnitude earthquakes occur. Introduction Large magnitude earthquakes occur on plate boundaries and can produce hazards such as movement along faults, landslides, and tsunamis. In North America, the western coast is an active margin, meaning that it is home to earthquakes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Collapse of the Madoff Pyramid Essay Our economy has been built upon for decades creating growth within the business industry. Businesses provide jobs, finances, and security for individual s within society and is a main source of what defines our prosperous country. Every business has an ethical responsibility to its members and employee s and to society at large. Ethical responsibility is a major component in which society needs to reinforce because it helps create principles, values, and standards, all of which help to guide a person s behavior (Ferrel et al. 2013). Ethics help to create balance which in turn will have positive results for the business versus negative results. In understanding how he became unethical within his business, it is important to gain insight into the history of the business and its impeccable growth. Madoff opened his firm, Madoff Investment Securities, in 1960 (The Madoff). The firm began honest growth when his father in law Saul Alpern, joined to the firm as an accountant. During this time, there were a plethora of competing firms on the New York Stock Exchange, so to gain a competitive edge, Madoff s firm began using innovative computer information technology to disseminate its quotes. The technology his firm developed proved to be so successful, that it became the NASDAQ (Weiner). The development of this technology provided the firm with exceptional income and drove his firm to become one of the most successful on Wall Street. Unfortunately, the firm s success was not enough for Madoff and in the early 1990 s he transitioned from an influential trader to a fabricator of returns by creating the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Madoff claimed to combine blue chip securities with derivatives to hedge risk, which provided rock solid and steady returns, even in down markets. This easily sold his client into investing significant amounts of money, and for some, their life savings. What Madoff s investors did not realize was that, in reality, the returns for current investors perpetuated by acquiring funds for new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Internal Control Project Paper Introduction of Dentistar and the problem Dentistar, Inc. was formed in 1985 to provide dental and orthodontic services to subscribers of their prepaid dental plans. This report examines the western region s office, located in Los Angeles, and its issuance of excessive manual checks that resulted in multiple bank overdrafts. Results indicate that only minimal efforts have been made for internal control measures in this office and companywide, and that weaknesses have allowed the Finance Coordinator to embezzle funds. There are many issues to be addressed, and several remedial actions to be taken to prevent these types of losses going forward. Strengths in the internal control system Dentistar s internal control system has some... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If any unauthorized transactions took place, the evidence is gone when the account is deleted. Errors in segregation of duties are prevalent as well. The current tasks for the Finance Coordinator position leave Dentistar open to internal control nightmares. This position is given responsibility to consolidate information and calculate amounts for manual disbursements, prepare checks, maintain regional accounting files, collect past due accounts receivable, organize financial data for audit, and assist with human resources. Beyond that he is indirectly, through severe weaknesses in internal control, given the ability to authorize refunds, issue payments for operating expenditures and affect the general ledger. These duties and implied responsibilities effectively give him custody, authority, recording, and review powers, which is a gross disregard for internal control. Moreover, all personnel can create operating expenditures instead of one or a small number of people, so auditors aren t able to trace expenses to individuals. Adequate speed of updating information and open lines of communication are important for all companies. However, slow reactions are causing control deficiencies. Regional employees are allowed to issue disbursements that would take too long for the home office to make, but these transactions draw from accounts with an unknown balance, and they have no ... • 44. The Polo Shirt, The Smell Of Season Steak Sizzling On The... Peanuts scattered throughout the restaurant floor; the smell of season steak sizzling on the cooker. I can never get enough of Roadhouse grill food or my position as a hostess dressed and khakis with a white polo shirt, and black slippery proof shoes. The country music play in the background while I greet incoming customers, welcome to roadhouse grill! How many are in your party? I always wear a smile because everyone I work with including my boss are polite and entertaining. It was a crazy coincidence when I discovered that my college lover, Dustin worked at the restaurant as well. Word spread fast to my boss then laughed over it. It will be 2 of us now and the other guy coming soon, the older Spanish guy with the beard replies. As I walked the men to their table, I make small talk to everyone who comes in as I normally do and make jokes to cheer them. It seems as though the Spanish men were in some type of construction work clothing because their polo shirt has a company logo and small words above the chest area, blue jeans and steel toe boots that have cement powder on them. It is not normal to see men of this race in a restaurant like this and with company logo on. In Biloxi, Mississippi and Lucedale, Mississippi there are only Mexicans, who did field work or did odd jobs. I noticed one of the men obviously old enough to be my grandfather take interest in me by flirting. A southerner never is rude unless forced to be, so I laughed and smiled not giving too much ... • 45. The Effect Of Stock Market On Gdp Growth Extensive amount of studies have been undertaken to examine the effect of stock market on GDP growth. Some of the studies on this topic are Demirguc Kunt and Levine (1995), Levine and Zervos (1993, 1995, 1998) etc. In theory well developed stock market should enduce saving and efficiently allocate capital to productive investments which would later lead to increase in the rate of real output. Stock markets contribute to accumulation of domestic savings by enhancing the scope of financial instruments available to savers and investors trough diversification of their portfolios. Dailami and Aktin (1990) think stock markets provide important source of capital investment at low cost which should serve as an obvious benefit for the economy in general. In developed economies with developed stock markets share ownership provides individuals with probably the most liquid means of sharing the risks and benefits of investing in promising projects. The main advantage of liquid stock market is that it provides investors to cope with liquididy risk by allowing participants hit by illiquidity constraints to sell their stakes to othe participants who at the time do not suffer form the same problem. These transactions are done in real time with frictions in the market being at the minimum. The ending result of this process is that capital is not prematurely withdrawn form firms to meet short term liquidity need. It is just changing hands. Stock markets also play an important role in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Volunteering In College Winston Churchill once stated, We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give. According to this great leader, making money is not the only basis for happiness; he feels that one must also give of one s time in order to live a more fulfilling life. Following this ideology, volunteering in one s community would be a means to accomplish a more rewarding existence. This idea has sparked a debate about whether students should be required to volunteer in order to gain their diplomas. Requiring volunteer hours to graduate should not be considered because being made to help others could lead to apathy, there is not a course of study for volunteering, and volunteering could affect the monetary situation for some students. First and foremost, forced volunteerism for high schoolseniors may lead to a greater apathy toward the needs of others. When students are made to give of their time, they may show their resentment by performing poorly. For instance, last fall I worked at a soup kitchen. One of the helpers had been required to be there because his mother wanted him to see how privileged he was. This young man spilled more food than he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Concern for others must be fostered at an early age. Pres school would be a better venue for this service idea. Plus, there are students with disorders such as Autism who would have severe difficulty fulfilling the requirements. Volunteering is not a feasible request of all seeking a high school diploma. Though volunteering and giving back to the community are important, making volunteer hours a requirement for graduation is a bad decision. Mandatory volunteerism is an oxymoron. The want to help has to be present and should not enter into the realm of regulation for graduating seniors. Each individual must choose what he or she gives and the life he or she ...
