The Abstract Principles Of Sexuality And Race
The abstract principles of sexuality and race have always been delicate ideas for society to
comprehend. When you Google the word sexuality , you do not come across a gender specified
definition that constricts males and females to desire only one another. It simply states that it is the
sexual habits and desires of a person. Any person, male, female, transgender, or otherwise, can be
sexual with whomever they desire. So why is the dichotomy of homosexualityversus heterosexuality
such a pervasive notion?
There are multiple myths and facts about sexual orientation. Case Western Reserve University,
located in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the most LGBT friendly campuses in the country. On their
website they host an page about their gender friendly campus that answers any common questions
one might have about such issues. No one knows what causes sexual orientation. Many lesbian,
gay and bisexual people know that they are attracted to members of their own sex at an early age,
sometimes as young as 6 or 7 years old. Others learn much later in life, in their 30 s, 40 s or later
still. Some research indicates that sexual orientation is determined between birth and age 3, but no
one is sure what causes particular orientations.
As for race, considering and supporting the theory of color on individuals and collaborating the
ideas to our community, in my opinion, seems to be much more of a delicate matter than sexuality.
The concept of race is a modern concept. In the

Relationship Between Caesar And Octavian
Octavian, the sole heir and successor of Julius Caesar overcame significant impediments in his rise
to becoming Rome s first emperor. Aged only nineteen at the time of Caesars assassination in
March 44BC Octavian s intelligence and fortitude proved successful over the barriers of youth,
inexperience and the political opposition that he faced. Octavian went on to have one of the most
famous political careers of all time to defeat the Senate, Marc Antony, and gain sole control over the
Roman Empire.
Before Caesars assassination Caesar and Octavian had built a powerful relationship that proved
instrumental in Octavian s career. Octavian learned a great deal about provincial administration,
warfare and political manipulation while a part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antony s actions after Caesars death solidified his expectations of inheriting power as he moved to
take control of Caesars assets, and publically read his will and he thought himself to be the
strongest contender to carry on Caesars political legacy.
To assert political power in the Roman Empire Octavian s first action was to gain loyalty among
the Roman people and build his reputation. In Illyricum at the time of Caesars assassination he
took with him a small group of friends that went to the south of Italy to visit Caesars allies and
clients. Whilst there he assessed the position in Rome and the best course of action he could
take to gain control. Once in Rome he concentrated on commemorating Caesars death and
seeking vengeance against his assassins which was in contrast with Antony s views. Octavian
then began to build a relationship with the Roman mob, they were one of Caesars main power
bases and very influential in the Roman Empire. To build a positive relationship he first paid the
legacies that were left to the people of Rome by Caesar. As the processing of Caesars will was
held up and Antony refused to return Caesars money Octavian pad the people out of his own
pocket. This action gained loyalty and began to pave the way for a constructive relationship
between Octavian and the Roman people.
The next action that Octavian took was to undermine his political opponents, he wanted to achieve
a high political position in Rome and eliminate Marc Antony. To do

Abstract
Environmental issues influence all human activities and even more influent the business, especially
true in marketing. As society becomes more concerned with the natural environment, businesses
have begun to modify their behavior in an attempt to address society s new concerns, which is the
global warming. Some businesses have been quick to accept concepts like environmental

Global Warming as a Business Risk
Global warming has negative effects on industries. This means that this phenomenon should be
considered as forming part of the social and environmental risks that business firms needs to
consider in developing their business strategies. If not, businesses would find themselves
unprepared for the possible effects of global warming on their operations, profitability and even
viability. In the case of the tourism industry, tourism businesses would not be prepared to address
the actualization of problems caused by global warming if these firms do not understand the
impact of this phenomenon and include preventive plans and alternative solutions in case these
effects are actualized. This is to ensure the viability of tourism businesses or if not the shift in
business strategy of these firms to adjust to the market and industry changes brought about by the
manifestations of global warming. Risk is the probability that a particular adverse event occurs
during a stated period of time, or results from a particular challenge (1995, ). This could also

Summary Of The Protestant Ethic And The Spirit Of...
Written between 1904 and 1905, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is the
fundamental and best known work of Max Weber, a German philosopher and sociologist who
was also a political man: I chose this book because I was curious about the theories on how
capitalism emerged and because I have heard of Max Weberbefore which could make this report
less complex for me. In this book Weber notes that the Protestant religion is the predominant among
the German capitalist classes. With the difference between Protestant capitalists and Catholic
capitalists, Weber concludes that Protestant ideology in one way or another promotes the
construction of capitalism.
Max Weber begins his book pointing out how there was a common factor in his society, business
leaders and owners of capital, as well as the higher grades of skilled labour, and even more the
higher technically and commercially trained personnel of modern enterprises, are overwhelmingly
Protestant (3). This message unveils the sociological themes of the conflict theory and how culture
affects society. His style of writing is expository and persuasive, for this book can be treated as a
lengthy essay. Weber notes that the Protestant religion is the predominant among the German
capitalist classes. Being the difference between Protestant capitalists and Catholic capitalists, Weber
concludes that Protestant ideology in one way or another promotes the construction of capitalism.
The ethics of capitalism argue that the supreme end of our life is the acquisition of wealth by
themselves, the pursuit of enrichment is not seen as a means to an end; the capitalist entrepreneur
does not seek to enrich himself to retire but seeks enrichment for himself. Enjoyment, rest or
withdrawal are not the objectives of the capitalist mentality, although it may be the end of the
members of capitalist economies that are not integrated into the system.
One of the concepts that this book talks about is some of the essence of the macro level process
of capitalism. He tried to correlate the fact that the people who have wealth and have the control
over production, or capitalists, had a different way of seeing what was in front of them. He said
that capitalism acts as an

The Front De Liberation Du Quebec
Active since 1963, the Front de Liberation du Quebec s (FLQ) violent actions in October 1970 cost
Canadians citizens their rights and freedoms in an attempt to establish Quebec as a separate nation.
Prior to Canada becoming a nation and to this date, Quebec has engaged in a tense relationship with
English Canada and harbours longstanding resentments over language, religion and
multiculturalism. Throughout the 1960 s, the province underwent profound change during the
Quiet Revolution and Quebecnationalism soared. During this time, the FLQ organized several
bombings and riots. The culmination of the FLQ s actions in 1970 is referred to as the October
Crisiswhich translated into the kidnapping of British Trade Commissioner James Cross and the
murder of Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte. The October Crisis also represents Canada s
only encounter with domestic terrorism and the third time the War Measures Act was invoked. The
decision to invoke the War Measures Act was a controversial one made by Prime Minister Pierre
Trudeauand Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa since it imposed national martial law. Upon
examination of the FLQ s actions during the October Crisis, the response from the federal
government and the impact on Quebec nationalism and the rest of Canada, it is apparent that the
government handled the October Crisis tactfully and was correct to invoke the War Measures Act.
Through the FLQ s violent history, the kidnapping of James Cross and the murder of

The Philosophical Debate On Moral Responsibility
Philosophical debate on moral responsibility has a long history. Thousands of years, many
philosophers have debated on whether human beings are morally responsible for their actions. To
answer this question, philosophers use terms like free will, determinism, compatibility and
deservingness to help it. The question is still a major issue addressed today. To be morally
responsible means to accept praise, blame, reward, or punishment for an act or omission in
accordance with one s moral obligations. People could argue that they have free willor not.
According to general knowledge of free will, free will can be defined as the ability to do things
on ones own discretion. Thus, in this paper I will argue that humans are morally responsible for
their actions. I will prove this by using the concepts of Free will and determinism. Free will in the
sense that for humans to be morally responsible for an action, one has to be free and conscious of
his or her decision. In the case of Determinism, the presence of causation and external forces has
minimal effect or no effect on moral responsibility.
Free will
Human beings are morally responsible for their actions because they posess free will. Free will
is a choice or a desire to do something of ones accord. According to Paul Edward, a philosopher,
when we call an action free we mean that the agent is not compelled or constrained to perform it.
(Edward). One might argue that people act in certain ways because they have been drugged or

Adoption
There are many sides and opinion about adoption, me coming from the adoption system highly
agrees with adoption. In this paper, I m going to explain the history of adoption, the rules you have
to follow, the pros and cons of adoption and the process of adoption, and stories of adoption. Also,
I will talk and explain about the system and what could be improvements to the system.
Adoption is an old process. Adoption is a process where parents who cannot provide for their
kids can put them up for adoption to couples, or people would provide for the children. The
concept of adoption was not legally recognized in the United States until the 1850 s. Back then
there were no formal records of children being adopted. As the numbers of the informal adoption
grew, they soon realized that they needed to get a legal process of started. In 1851,

The Effects Of Social Media On Australian Contemporary...
BRIEF INTRODUCTION Good afternoon everyone I m here to talk about my Personal Interest
Project, which is based around the topic area FoMo ( defined by the Oxford dictionary as an
anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often
aroused by posts seen on a social media website. ) and its relation to adolescents using social
media in Australian contemporary society. FoMo is a concurrent issue in Australia (and
internationally) amongst teenagers, FoMo refers to a blend of anxiety, irritation, inadequacy,
and depression while skimming social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram FoMO is
new, a concept brought about by the digital era. WHY I CHOSE... I initially chose this area of
investigation because i had no other ideas for a PIP topic, time was running out, and so was my
capacity for good ideas. However, with further investigation and reflection on personal
experiences into FoMo, I soon began to find myself becoming more rapt with the phenomenon of
how one photo or status update could impact an individual s self concept and wellbeing.
Secondary research described the nature of FoMo as feelings of inadequacy and anxiety mainly
catalysed by living in a Western Society. I thought it was interesting how even big marketing
companies were using an internet meme as a basis for research. HYPOTHESIS And thus, i had
decided my hypothesis would be: how FoMo has become a psychological reality entity and how it

Gender Roles In Disney Movies
Disney is known for fairy tale films that are full of lovable characters that children cannot seem to
get enough of. The traits of many of the characters are great models for children to watch and learn
from. Adults tend to see a bit more than just the good qualities they embody, which leads to the
realization that these films are far from perfect. Upon closer inspection, Disney films embrace
patriarchal and sexist ideologies when it comes to their characters something that Disney has been
nearly successful in eradicating in their most recent films. From the earliest films to the most
recent, the portrayal of genderroles, of both the hero/heroine and the villain, has changed for the
better. The earliest princesses, Snow White, Cinderella,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In response to criticism and to avoid being called sexist, Disney started using more male villains.
According to Amy Davis, there exists several different types of male villain: pirate kings,
enemies of the earth, magically dangerous, criminally dangerous, comic, and idiotic. Ratcliffe,
from Pocahontas, is an enemy of the earth villain and concerned only with what wealth he can
gain from the land. The Shadow Man, from The Princess and the Frog, is a magically dangerous
villain and a practitioner of voodoo. He exerts his magical power to manipulate other people to
do what he wishes, and his primary goal consists of becoming ridiculously wealthy. Shan yu,
from Mulan, is a criminally dangerous and arrogant villain with a grandiose sense of self who is
intent on conquering the whole of China. Hans, from Frozen, is probably a criminally dangerous
villain, although he lacks mention in Davis s book. Being the youngest in his family, he feels as
though he does not get anything he believes he deserves, so he manipulates Anna to gain access to
her kingdom and wealth. Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast, is a comic villain composed of more
brawn than brain. He only cares about acquiring wealth, a category that also includes Belle. These
male villains all have similar characteristics greed, arrogance, overconfidence, and violent
tendencies (Amy Davis Ch.

Sonny s Character In The Rocket Boys
My favorite character in Rocket Boys is Sonny s father, Homer Hickman. This may seem like an
odd choice, given that Sonny s father is not always kind to Sonny, and often hinders him. Other
times, however, he helps Sonny greatly. For example, in the beginning of the story, he pours
Sonny s chemicals down the creek and forbids Sonny from launching rockets on company
property. Afterwards, he shows Sonny an area where he is allowed to launch rockets, the place that
becomes Cape Coalwood. Everything Sonny s father does often contradicts something done or said
earlier in the book, which seems at first to be very confusing.
These actions, however, all have a simple explanation. Sonny s father has two loves in his life: his
family and his mine. Additionally,

Wizard Of Oz Archetypes
The classic fantasy The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a story written by L. Frank Baum, who
suffered from a heart condition. Since he was unable to participate in many activities as a teen he
resulted in writing, allowing him to escape the real world and live through his fantasies. Starting in
Kansas and moving into the Land of Ozit is the reoccurring patterns of symbolic and situational
archetypes that bring the story to life. Although originally written as a piece of children s
literature, it is a story that people of all ages love. Literature has the ability to take readers to
another place better than the real world. Expressive use of vivid colours throughout the Land of Oz,
unfortunate situations that lead to newfound friendships and Dorothy s purposeful journey allows
readers to visualize how life would be living in a childhood fantasy.
Firstly, the symbolism of colour plays a major role in expressing various emotions throughout
the story. In the beginning, Dorothy sees nothing but the great grey prairie on every side (Baum

Alternative Energy Sources Essay
Imagine a world where nobody can use their iPhone, their computer, or even turn on the lights.
That is the kind of world the future may be like if there is not an overhaul of how electricity is
obtained. Ever since the Industrial Revolution, people have utilized fossil fuels to power their
homes, cars, and businesses. Unfortunately, our stores of fossil fuels are running low, and they
have been demonstrated to increase the temperature in the atmosphere and accelerate global
warming. As gas prices steadily rise, people need a newer, cleaner source of energy. The

All of the proven sources of oil will be depleted by the year 2055 according to Erika Antoniazzo,
a woman who is well read in terms of oil production.(eco info.net) On the other hand, renewable
resources can never be depleted. There will always be wind that can blow turbines. There will
always be a sun to heat solar panels. There will always be water to run through dams. The power
that can be drawn from these sources is limitless, which is obviously more sustainable than fossil
fuels, which clearly has a limit. Scientists are developing technology in the field of nuclear
fusion (the process in which the sun creates its energy), which if obtained will provide an
infinite amount of power. These alternative sources of energy will provide energy for the world
until the end of time. The government has been greatly influenced by big oil companies lobbying
for political power. No single group should have such a large amount of power over the
government. If our focus on fossil fuels is shifted over to a more general scope that includes
various renewable energy sources, then no single group of companies will have a significant
amount of power in the direction of the country. Since oil companies have an iron grip on
decisions the U.S. makes, we have gone to several wars over the pursuit of oil. General Zilmer

while generating its revenues (Parrino, 2011). For Microsoft, expenses would stem from the costs
of building its products, marketing them, developing new products, shipping them around the
world, etc. For Accenture, expenses would stem from the cost of all of its consultants, which
includes their wages, insurance, company laptops it provides to each of them, travel costs for
sending consultants around the world on projects, etc. Again both types of firms exhibit
expenses; some of them are just different. Net income shows the company s revenue relative to
its expenses. If revenues exceeds expenses then the company has a net profit and is in the black
for that time period (Parrino, 2011). On the other hand, if expenses exceed revenues then the
company has a net loss and is in the red for that time period (Parrino, 2011). By looking at financial

The Cyclist Poetry Commentary
The Cyclist poetry commentary
The Cyclist is a poem by Louis MacNeice which romanticizes the fleeting joys of childhood. These
joys are emphasised through imagery of summer be it activities, food, the beach, a bicycle ride,
various techniques such as juxtaposition and enjambment are used to evoke fond memories from
the reader.
MacNeice s poem is set in the southwest of England, on a hill with a chalk horse carved into it. It is
during the height of summer, when the grasshoppers are buzzing and the children are playing
outside. The character is a boy or a group of boys, and they are riding bicycles down a hill near to
the chalk horse. The structure of the poem is quite disjointed, with only five sentences throughout
three stanzas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Difference Between Arial And Helvetica
The drive to the core of absence is also evident in the realm of type design. In 1932, Beatrice
Warde, an American typographic expert, published an essay The Crystal Goblet , or known as
Printing Should Be Invisible , insists on an invisible or transparent typography in order to elevate
the printed words. In her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be
as transparent as crystal glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). A typeface, as a container, is calculated
to reveal and not to hide the beautiful content which it is meant to contain. The design of the
container should not call undue notice to itself. Her theory of invisible typefaces is in line with
Modernist simplicity as well as functionality, which perfect... Show more content on

They both are sans serif typefaces that are universally embraced by different applications. At first
glance, they seem extremely similar. But if designers examine the characters in each typeface
closely, the differences between them become apparent. Mark Simonson, an American graphic
designer, produced an analysis of these two typefaces, showing how much more refined Helvetica
than that of Arial (Simonson, 2001). The primary difference between the two is the treatments of
their endings. While Helvetica is vertically cut, Arial is slightly angled. For instance, the tail of the
a is gently curved in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial.
Similarly, the top of the t and the ends of the strokes in the C and S are perfectly horizontal in the
former, but slightly angled in the latter. Even though the distinguishing details are so tiny that
cannot be noticed unless they are scrutinized as Simonson has done. Yet it is these subtleties that
constitute Helvetica a finer example of design than Arial, especially for professionals. Functionally
the two types are roughly equal, both are admirably clear, but aesthetically Helvetica is

Essay On Evelina
The enthusiasm in Evelina s early letters to Mr. Villars is ironic considering many of the
experiences she has both in London and Bristol are difficult and unpleasant. Often in these
situations, she s the victim to social protocols. Throughout Evelina, the titular character is a victim
of a combination of physical, social, and mental constraint. During her time in London, Evelina is
the victim of physical restraint. Innocent places like a garden, an opera house, or a carriage turn
into a prison that can hold Evelina captive. Her walk with Miss Branghtons down the alley at
Vauxhall ends with her encountering a group of men who grab her and assume she s a prostitute.
Her rescuer Sir Clements, interprets her situation (walking in a dimly lit place unaccompanied) in a
negative light. Often Evelina is too frightened to intimidate or condemn her attackers. The carriage
incident shows the difference in power between Sir Clement and Evelina. Sir... Show more content

Pevelance and Effects of Rape
The Prevalence and Effects of Rape
The prevalence of rape is a major social problem that plagues America and other countries around
the world daily. Victims of rape are psychologically, and sometimes physically damaged from being
sexually assaulted. Although it would seem that it is a sexually motivated crime, rape is actually an
act of violence in which sex is used as a weapon against a powerless victim (Kendall 197).
Neither rapists, nor rape victims are concentrated to one specific class or race. However,
American women aged 16 24 are considered to be at the greatest risk of sexual assault
(Aronowitz, Lambert, and Davidoff 173). The majority of rapists are age twenty five and
younger. Almost all rape cases have female victims with male offenders. Men account for only
10% of all rape victims, and in some cases their rapist is also male. In regards to statistics, rape
appears rare because of victims fears that they will not be believed, or have stigmas about rape now
attached to them(Egan and Wilson 345).
According to Wolitzk Taylor et al., approximately 1 in 7 US women have been raped in their
lifetimes. Estimates from the 1990s and 2000s indicate that only 16% to 20% of forcible rape
victims report the rape to law enforcement (Wolitzky Taylor et al. 582). The reason for the
disproportion of rape victims to rape reports is likely the vast acceptance of rape myths in society.
Rape myths are stereotyped, or false beliefs about rape, rape victims, and rapists (Egan

Who Is The Narrator In Slaughterhouse Five
Endless End
Some say it s scary to think of death when not a lot has been lived, but others feel it s scarier to
live after seeing so much. In the satirical novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, an
unreliable narrator tells the story of a POW named Billy Pilgrim as he is Unstuck in time visiting
significant points in his life. Billy Pilgrim had been captured in World War II and lived
experiences that struck his life significantly to the point where he suffered from Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD). The unreliability of a narrator is never fully revealed but only hinted at
as the novel progresses. This strategic way compromises the story in a way where the reader isn t

reader s job is to determine whether the author ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

from the war and says I thought it would be easy for me to write about the destruction of

(Vonnegut 2). When something has a huge impact in one s life, such as war had on him, it is hard
to communicate if there isn t full understanding of the occurrences. His inability to express his
problems are evidence that the events he lived had serious consequences without him being aware
of it. As said by Susan Vee Gulani, Vonnegut s writing of Slaughterhouse Five can be seen as a
therapeutic process that allows him to uncover and deal with his trauma (Vee Gulani). What he
lived caused his conditions to be threatened. He was no longer his regular self. To explain his
experience he tells about Billy Pilgrim and his encounters during the same war. Both went through

Filariasis has no clear vaccine. Thus, the best way to eradicate the disease is by eliminating
microfilaria from the infected individuals, which therefore will interrupt the process of transmitting
the infection by the mosquito. Administration of diethylcarbamazine concurrently with albendazole
or invermectin (DEC) is proven to eliminate 99% of microfilaria from the infected individual.
Albeit advance treatment of this disease is currently available, vigorous action should be taken by
the communities and the respective agencies to abolish all potential breeding sites for mosquitoes.
WHO classify this disease a disease of the poor, due to its pervasiveness to occur in remote rural
areas. Thus, if I were to construct two premises on filariasis, I would say; first, to have a
filariasis is to live in poverty. Second, people are infected by filariasis. And therefore, I would
conclude that those who are infected by filariasis are most likely to live in poverty. As has been
stated by the WHO, the fight to eliminate filariasis is also a fight against poverty .
Malaria is another example of vector borne infectious disease that uses mosquitos as vectors and
would infects the blood. Malaria remains a big problem in many sub tropical and tropical
countries. The United States is considered Malaria free since it has been eradicated in this
country since early 1950 s. However, over 1300 cases of malaria, including 8 deaths were reported

Essay about Aristotle’s Three Categories of Friendships
Friendships are special relationships that begin the development of social skills in each human
person. Every time we open the door to form new friendships it begins with an experimental and
holistic practice of philosophy and science. Whether we recognize the use of philosophy and
science or not it s being applied to shape friendships. The formation and bond of friendships has
been studied for many years through science, philosophy, and theology. The point of this paper is
to give the point of view and purpose of friendshipaccording to science, philosophy, and theology

In order for the bond to last for a lifetime, self disclosure and supportiveness also needs to continue.
In life there are many changes that can cause a true friendship to go wary such as marriage, divorce,
birth of children, new careers, and sickness. However, through each of those events the two must
remember to keep the intimacy, the letting down of emotional barriers and the expression of
innermost thoughts and feelings, that which makes friendships thrive must be an enjoyable one
and to always interact (Karbo 3). Although psychologists continue to research the formation of
friendships the great philosopher Aristotle knew exactly how friendships formed and how the
lasted. In the book Aristotle and the Philosophy of Friendship, (based off the Nicomachean Ethics)
the author, Pangle, informed the audience that Aristotle believe in three different types of
friendships based off three different types of motives: Friendships of Utility, Friendships of
Pleasure, and Perfect Friendship. He identifies these types of friendships as different types of
sources of affection that are lovable as the good, the pleasant, and the useful. Before analyzing
Aristotle three types of friendships we must first understand what he meant by friendship. During
Aristotle s rein friendship was commonly known as the love one person had for another. Philia,

Reading And Writing On My Life
If I said that reading was important to me right now, I would definitely be lying. I can t sit down
for extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary
school, and even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was
younger I could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love
with reading as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii.
Sometimes I find it difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over
embarrassment is to talk about it right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my
love for reading. My earliest recollections about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me.
Reading had a huge impact on my life. In a way, I guess you could even say that some of these
experiences made me as literate and knowledgeable as I am today. It was the first time in my life

the time it was extremely useful and I loved having it around. I then moved on to own an HTC
and now an IPhone. And not long after I got my IPhone, I bought a Playstation 4, an Xbox 360,
and a Playstation 2. I honestly believe that technology was the main reason I stopped reading. Now

Recombinant Dna Techniques Essay
In this experiment, individuals were able to use recombinant DNA techniques such as cloning to
alter the DNA of a certain strain of yeast called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. By the use of cloning,
scientists are able to analyze and compare the genetic material of a specific organism to another. In
this lab, the recombinant DNAtechniques are used to transform AmpS E. Coli to AmpR E. Coli.
This was done by using an insert, a vector, and a host. The insert was S. Cerevisiae genomic
DNA, E. Coli plasmid was the vector, and E. Coli was the host. The technique of gel
electrophoresis was also used to determine whether the DNA was cut or not with restriction
enzymes. Uncut sequences of the DNA were sent to an outside laboratory for sequencing. Then
when the sequencing was complete, computer programs, such as BLAST, were used to determine
whether or not the genomic insert originates from a gene and if the yeast codes for a protein that
could be found within the human genome. Introduction Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, more

Socrates s Views On Socrates
Socrates could undeniably be described as one of the most influential philosophers and greatest
thinker of his time. His views can be interpreted many different ways, but most would agree that he
sought out wisdom and truth for the betterment of himself and his community. Though Socrates
was one of the most intelligent men of his time, he was very foolish to never write his own book.
For this reason, after his passing, one of his students, Plato, began to write a book about his
teachings and ideas called Plato: Five Dialogues. In this book, we examined Plato s Meno in which
Meno asks Socratescan virtue be taught? but, Socrates quickly transforms this question into what is
virtue? . This questions ultimately consumes the entirety of this dialogue, and in the end, Meno
proves to lack originality in his arguments by simply agreeing with each thing Socrates states.
While Meno thought he knew the answer to this question, Socrates provides a different opinion.
Although Meno does not learn anything in the course of this dialogue, Socrates still remains one of
the most influential teachers and philosophers of his time. In this essay I shall focus on the
question of who is Socrates, next I will examine what teaching and learning really mean, and finally
I will conclude with the fact that Meno does not actually learn anything from Socrates.

Values Of A Warrior Society As Seen In Beowulf
The Values of a Warrior Society As Seen in Beowulf When Nelson Mandela, the president of
South Africa died, thousands of people gathered to say their goodbyes. It was not a happy and
joyous occasion but rather one where people were mourning of the loss of a great man. They may
not have personal known him but they know of the great things that he has done to make the world
a better place. To them, it is what made his deathdifficult and sad. However, if we lived in a
warrior society his death would not have something to mourn; instead we would celebrate his life.

Scyld s funeral is not a somber occasion, but rather a joyous celebration. The people do not
mourn that he is dead but rather rejoice for the life that he led. Their celebration shows that they
do not grieve death. In this warrior society death is seen as honorable. The one who has died has
given the ultimate sacrifice, death, for their people. They may have followed their leader into
battle and died or they may have died of old age as is the case with Scyld. This is confirmed later
on when Beowulf is speaking Hrothgar on the death of his best thane. Beowulf states, Wise sir, do
not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us,
living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a
warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark (lines 1384 89). This statement solidifies
what is hinted at earlier on in the epic during Scyld s funeral. It is part of a heroic code. Death is
what comes to people who have earned it in their dedication to a cause or great warriors who
have earned it. Since death is found to be so honorable, the people do not mourn for the loss of
their king but celebrate his death. Scyld s funeral plays an important role in discovering what was
important to the society at this time including honor in death and the qualities found in a great

What Causes Obesity Is The Relationship Of Energy Intake...
The most rudimentary explanation for what causes obesity is the relationship of energy intake
and expenditure and its effect on energy balance. If energy intake is greater than energy
expenditure, weight gain will occur. In contrast, energy expenditure in excess of energy intake
will result in weight loss ( Dietz Gortmaker, 2001). However, Obesity is a complex disease that
involves interactions between genetics, regulation of energy balance, and strong environmental
influences such as increased caloric intake and decreased physical activity in today s modern
society. The genetic approach both in animal models and in humans has allowed immense progress
in the understanding of body weight regulation. Monogenic forms of obesity in humans have been
characterized and result from mutations in genes involved in the central pathways of food intake
regulation. However, these cases are extremely rare and generally obesity must be considered as a
complex polygenic disease involving interactions between multiple genes and the environment
(Clement Ferre, 2003) Genetics There are several genetic factors that contribute to an individual s
predisposition towards obesity in a common environment. Several investigators have provided
evidence for an association between candidate genes and obesity related phenotypes. Currently,
there are greater than 600 genes, markers and chromosomal regions linked to obesity related
phenotypes (PГ©russe et al., 2005). In a large

Reader Response to James Joyce s The Dead Essays
Reader Response to Joyce s The Dead
James Joyce s story The Dead has a tremendous impact on the
readers, especially those who are familiar with the political situation in
Ireland at the time about which the Joyce wrote the final story in
Dubliners. In exploring the meaning of James Joyce s long short story,
The Dead , there are many critical approaches to take. Each approach
gives readers a lens, a set of guidelines through which to examine and
express ideas of the meaning of The Dead. Joyce himself said that the
idea of paralysis was the intended theme of all the stories in The Dubliners
of which The Dead is the final story.

The images reflect Gabriels ego in a sense, at the same for his
marital relationship, and at the end death, which may not be physical but
spiritual. Gabriel who is tallish and stout symbolizes authority and also
wants to be perfect for all times. He has a mental block, which makes him
believe that he is more superior and different than others are. He s built
a screen around himself, which stops him from identifying himself with the
Common Man. The ...polished lenses and the bright gilt rims of the
glasses which screened his delicate and restless eyes.... (23,24). This
image perhaps tells us that the glasses are the screen that partition his
vision from the vision of others.
Joyce s intended theme of paralysis is exemplified in the
symbolization of snow. In the story, snow has a major role as it
symbolizes the political situation at the same time where everything was
cold and dead due to the political uncertainty at the time. Snow also
plays a major role as it interprets the reader to be on the alert, as
things at the end are not going to be as smooth as Gabriel had predicted.
This seen in the shift of mood when after the party had concluded, Gabriel
and his wife are heading towards the hotel and he s in a very

Themes of Honor and Shame in Invisible Man Essay
EXECUTE SHAME GENTLY
Invisible Man is a novel by Ralph Ellison, addressing many social and moral issues regarding
African American identity, including the inside of the interaction between the white and the black.
His novel was written in a time, that black people were treated like degraded livings by the white
in the Southern America and his main character is chosen from that region. In this figurative novel
he meets many people during his trip to the North, where the black is allowed more freedom. As a
character, he is not complex, he is even naГЇve. Yet, Ellison s narration is successful enough to
show that he improves as he makes radical decisions about his life at the end of the book.
The nameless narrator is a young black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
White people s idea of educating black is surrounded by abasement. What is seen on the surface
that the college tries to achieve is not what is beneath. The narrator realizes this when he has to
talk to Dr. Bledsoe after his misdeeds. Dr. Bledsoe s speech, although mostly reprimanding,
gives clues about many moral issues, which the people experiencing the racism and division of
races come across. Please him? And here you are a junior in college! Why, the dumbest black
bastard in the cotton patch knows that the only way to please a white man is to tell him a lie!
(pg.139) My God, boy! You re black and living in the South did you forget how to lie? These two
sentences, owned by Dr. Bledsoe suggest that the boy should lie to hide the inconvenient truth to
Mr. Norton. It brings a question of ethics, along with honor. Is a person who lies honorable? Is
lying permissible in this case? The investigation and the answers to these questions will make the
understanding of honor clearer. Negroes don t control this school or much of anything else haven
t you learned even that? No, sir, they don t control this school, nor white folk either. True they
support it, but I control it. I s big and black and I say Yes, suh as loudly as any burr head when it s
convenient, but I m still the king down here. (Pg.142) The reason that Dr. Bledsoe wants the
narrator to lie is apparent on the quotation above. His hunger for authority, his affection towards
power, his ambition to

Examinee Reflection
On February 20, 2016, I completed my fourth WISC V administration. I noticed several things that
I could have improved on as well as things that I did well on during the recorded administration.
The video began with me asking the examinee several rapport building questions. For example, I
asked him about his hobbies to get him to talk about what he liked to do in his free time. It is
important to build report with the examinee because he child is likely to be apprehensive before an
assessment. Rapport building helps increase the likelihood of a smooth administration and an
interested examinee. I didn t think my examinee was nervous, but I knew that he would have rather

One of the most obvious environmental distractions was the voice over the intercom saying that the
Russell Union was closing soon. It was unexpected to both me and the examinee because I had
never tested in that building near closing time. The intercom warning was made twice near the end
of the administration. Another distraction was my phone. I had forgotten to turn the vibrate option
on my phone off during the administration so my phone rang several times. This could have
distracted the examinee during administration and affected his performance. It should be noted that
I used my phone to text the examinee s mother back when she inquired about the status of the
administration. The examinee s mother lived about 15 minutes away from the site of the
administration and I knew that she needed time to get to the building. In the future, I will make

Lack Of Rule Of Law Enforcement Essay
There is systemic corruption in Latin America. Corruption is rooted in the psyche of the South
American population, which affects the length of their democratic processes, making it easier and
shorter to bribe rather than commit to broken processes. Moreover, corruption affects the highest
levels of government. In order to face this problem, Latin America has made significant progress in
combating poverty and inequality. The economic developmentof states in Latin America allows
them to benefit from the international trade but it is not enough to maintain economic stability
within states. Deviant globalization creates an opportunity for transnational criminal organizations
to benefit from different activities like drug trafficking, human trafficking. The Western
Hemisphere presents different problems unlike other regions of the world. Mainly Latin America
is affected by problems of corruption and drug trafficking. Weak states are the biggest challenge in
Western Hemisphere, because corruption in Latin America is one of the factor that creates lack of
rule of law. In addition, a weak economy and absence of adequate law enforcement creates a safe
haven for transnational criminal organization. Moreover, the region presents serious problems in
the quality of democracy regarding human rights, as well as illegal immigration. Globalization both
affects weak states positively and negatively. To respond to this challenge, states must cooperate to

Death Of Death By Radiation
Death By Radiation
Nickolas Natali
California Baptist University, College of Engineering
Abstract
WHAT:
In 1985, a Canadian built radiation treatment device began obliterating holes through patients
bodies. The Therac 25, designed and developed by AECL (Atomic Energy Canadian Limited) was
an advanced linear accelerator that could speed up electrons turning them into a high energy beam
that annihilated surface tumours on the skin, or could converted the electrons into x rays to
penetrate tumours deeper within the body. The Therac 25 was the latest and greatest version of the
French company s previous models, the Therac 6 and Therac 20. One million dollars were
invested into this machine to give radiation treatments to cancer patients. Most of the patients
receiving treatment from the Therac 25 had already endured a form of surgery to remove the
majority of the tumour and were using the Therac 25 as a means of eliminating any leftover
growth. This high powered radiation machine was controlled by a computer from a separate room
to protect the operator from being exposed to any unnecessary, moreover unwanted, doses of
radiation.
As previously stated, the Therac 25 had two main functionalities: low energy and high energy. To
be clear, low energy consists of an electron beam of [roughly] 200 rads that was meant to be aimed
directly at the patient. High energy mode consisted of turning the machine to full

Criminal Justice Personal Statement Examples
When I entered Loyola University Chicago in the fall on 2017, I still felt understandably unsure
as to what both my academic and my professional future might hold for me. After two semesters
of exploring my interests and growing more confident in my abilities, I feel very secure in what
the future may hold. I am a rising sophomore with dual major in political science and criminal
justice and criminology, currently with an interest in pre law. I hope to study the intersection of
policy and the criminal justice system with a lens of social justice and a focus on the ways that
institutional discrimination has shaped the our nation and our world. Through my studies in these
areas, I hope to gain a firm and confident grasp on the way that both domestic and foreign politics
unfold, how the American criminal justice system contributes or deflects from social justice, and
how the intersection of those two fields can be applied in tandem to achieve a more just social
order. Additionally, while I am still in the very early stages of constructing a proposal, I hope to

Black Lives Matter Persuasive Essay
The Black Lives Matter Movement continues to be defined as a divisive movement in the U.S due
to the aggressive tactics done by BLM supporters. In addition, the BLM movement continues to
remain misunderstood and is often criticized by the ignorant who have no idea of their cause.
Therefore, the movement must emphasize their accomplishments and rethink their tactics within
the BLM community to fight off the false perception white America force feeds onto its citizens.
The BLM movement must strive to tear down the false equivalence of being grouped up with
terrorist. While, the white supremacist who commit political tyranny against minorities are free
from the stigmatization unlike their counterpart which seeks to fend off the horrendous judicial
system which has been oppressing them for decades. Thus, the movement must rethink their
tactics within the BLM community and reach others who may very well be a victim of
oppression. Furthering their agenda and gaining support from those who believe in civil rights
but cannot align themselves with the movement due to erroneous perceptions. The aggressive
tactics the BLM movement has taken in some cases have had a divisive outcome to many civil
rights activists. For example, Barbara Reynolds a civil rights activist who played a role in the
1960s shared her opinion on the Black Lives Matter tactics. Barbara states: Black Lives Matter is

Complications of Diabetes Essay
Complications of Diabetes
Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of developing primarily vascular complications that
contribute to morbidity and mortality of diabetic patients. Poor glycaemic control leads to vascular
complications that affect large (macrovascular), small (microvascular) vessels or both.
Macrovascular complications include coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke.
Microvascular complications contribute to diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage), nephropathy
(kidney disease) and retinopathy (eye disease).

Moreover, CVD mortality risk in men with T2D is increased three times comparing with non
diabetic men (Church et al., 2009). Hypertension, dyslipidaemia, abdominal obesity and smoking
are other major risk factor for CVD.
Glucose fluctuations has been suggested as a main contributor to both micro and macrovascular
complications, therefore tight glycaemic control was fought to benefit in patients with type
diabetes mellitus. However, individual results from tree recent clinical trials the Action to
Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial, the Action in Diabetes and Vascular
Disease: Preterax and Diamicron Modified Release Controlled Evaluation (ADVANCE trial), and
the Veterans Affairs Diabetes Trial (VADT) failed to support a significant reduction in CVD
events in the intensive glycaemic groups (Buse et al., 2007; Patel et al., 2008; Duckworth et al.,
2009). In fact, in those studies intensive glucose control may increase risk in older patients with pre
existing CHD or longer duration of diabetes.
Furthermore, despite the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) did not show a significant
trend in the reduction of myocardial infarction (MI) rates, the 10 year follow up of this trial

Dehumanization Of Jewish People During The Holocaust
Nathan Vondergeest
Mrs. Cummins
English 2

Dehumanization of Jewish People during the Holocaust Imagine being treated like cattle living
one s life inside a fence, starved, killed for no reason. Would one hang on to their humanity, or
would they let go of their hope, their compassion, their faith? From 1939 to 1945, the Nazi German
military systematically kidnapped, tortured and killed millions of Jews in their twisted effort to
racially purify Germany. This genocide has come to be known as the Holocaust. During the
Holocaust, millions of Jews were mercilessly beaten, sadistically experimented upon, and killed for
pleasure. Through these three ways, the Jewish people were treated as subhuman; through these
three ways, the Jewish people began to believe it themselves.
Jewish people were subjected to terrible beatings, powerless at the hands of the German soldiers.
Evidence of this can be found in Night, Elie Wiesel s memoir of his experience as a Jewish captive
of Nazi Germany. When his father asks to use a bathroom, Elie claims the Kapo slapped [his]
father with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours (Wiesel
39). Obviously, such force exhibited by this Kapo was in humane and uncalled for; these acts, and
this attitude of violence and condescension taken by the German Kapos, contributed to the
dehumanization of the Jewish people. The spirit of anti semitism that was so prevalent in Germany
during the Holocaust led to

Different Models And Theories Associated With Adult Learning
There is several different models and theories associated with adult learning. Through my research it
seems that andragogy is the first thing educators think of when adult learning process is mentioned.
Malcolm Knowles says, Andragogy is the art and science of helping others learn (Merriam,
Caffarella, Baumgartner, 2007). Andragogy are learningstrategies focused on adults. It is often
interpreted as the process of engaging adultlearners with the structure of the learning experience
(Clardy, 2005). Andragogy is an assumption that there are different characteristics and requirements
when it comes to learning between adults and children. Therefore, the learning procedures used in
teaching adults must be altered from the pedagogical procedures related to teaching children.
Andragogy is based on five assumptions concerning the adult learner (ASTD, 2007).
First is the assumption that as a person matures, their self concept moves from a dependent
personality towards more of a self directing personality. (Merriam et al., 2007). At this point the
learner is considered self directed. The second assumption is that an adult accumulates a growing
reservoir of experience, which is a rich resource for learning (Merriam et al., 2007). Basically,
adults can utilize their experiences to influence themselves and others. Third, the readiness for an
adult to learn is in close relation to the developmental tasks of the adult s social role. (Clardy,
2005). This readiness to learn is a direct

Observation and Measurement in Human Services Research
Observation and measurement in human services research Types of reliability The theory of
reliability states that it is impossible to calculate the reliability of a study in an exact way.
Instead, reliability is estimated and this creates an imperfection in research. There are four
major types of reliability. The first is inter rater or inter observer reliability. This means the
reliability that is used to assess the degree to which the different people who are observing or
rating the items being studied give estimates that are consistent regarding the same phenomenon.
A good example is the popular example of a glass half empty and one that is half full. This is to
mean that people who are in essence similar in every nature may have different ideas or views of
the same phenomenon. This kind of reliability is estimated by using a pilot study which is used to
establish the expected reliability in the main study(Rosnow Rosenthal, 2012). The second form of
reliability is the test retest reliability. This kind of reliability is used to assess the consistency of a
measure from one period of time to another. This reliability is estimated when the same test is
administered to the same sample group but at two different periods in time. This approach makes
an assumption that there is no substantial change in the construct that is being measures in the two
different occasions(Rosnow Rosenthal, 2012). The third form of reliability is the parallel forms
reliability. This form

Webb (2017) stated that the competing middleware vendor Extension recently acquired a mobility
platform named Vocera. Although Vocera was considered as a mobility, communication platform,
COHC has made a significant investment with the use of the Apple iPhone and therefore the use
of Vocera would be a costly change in direction. Ouellette (2017) and Webb (2017) agreed that the
next step would be to explore the medical equipment integration capabilities of Connexall s alarm
management middleware solution.
Medical Equipment Interoperability. The project team evaluated the five primary types of medical
equipment systems that were determined that interoperability would be critical by NICU clinicians
for effective communication. Ouellette (2017) investigated critical medical equipment to determine
the feasibility for integration with alarm management middleware and mobile applications. The
NICU clinical team identified the Phillips patient monitoring, pumps, incubator, ventilator and the
nurse call as medical equipment that is vital to their workflow.
Physiological Monitoring. The Philips patient monitoring system can be centrally managed and has
the ability to send patient alarm data from the medical device via a transmission protocol to the
middleware alarm system. The system also has localized visibility and audible sounds on the local

Ramps Height
This investigation seeks to determine the distance that a marble can travel after leaving a ramp
with retrospect to the ramps height. This experiment wished to find the relationship between the
height of the ramp and the distance that the marble will travel from the end of the ramp (Diagram
1, value d). The ramp is positioned on top of a bench with the height of the ramp being the
dependent variable.
The reason that this subject is important is because it demonstrates a wide understanding of linear
motion. Secondly, this scenario has some extremely relevant physics components present in many
fields of experience, for example calculating the projectile of an unguided missile, or calculating
how particular objects are going to be affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the experiment is undertaken the distance from the ramp to the landing position of the ball
is recorded (value d in diagram 1). This means that the formula, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 can be used
to find the vertical component, however, (t) time is required for this formula. Using the equation
v=dtthe time can be found. vt=dt(dt=height of the table) t=dv Both the distance (d) and velocity (v)
are known so they can be substituted into the equation to find time (t). Going back to the original
equation Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 the known values can be added to the equation, Xv= X1+Vvt
+12at2where X1= initial position and Vv= initial velocity
в€
ґXv=12at2(Note X1= 0 and Vv = 0)
This equation now has to be derived to calculate the vertical velocity.
Vv=at
The vertical component therefore has a velocity of the acceleration (gravity = 9.8ms^ 1) multiplied
by the time.
With two sides of a right angle triangle being known a2+b2=c2can be used to find the last velocity.
a = 2ghr b = att = dtvv=

It is not a question of having more, or more significant, opportunities: the opportunity for me to
study is there now. Rather it is a question of being able to take advantage of the opportunity by
being in control of my life. Positive freedom in this example is a matter of my having the
capacity to take the rational option as well as having the opportunity: whereas, according to a
concept of negative freedom, the opportunities that I have alone determine the extent of my
freedom. I am free to study in the negative sense since no one is preventing me from doing it; no
one has locked away my books, or hidden my pen and paper; no one has dragged me out of the
door to go to the movies, or chained me to my easy chair in front of the television. However, I
am not free in the positive sense; I am not truly free, because I am a slave to my tendency to be
sidetracked. True positive freedom would involve seizing control of my life and making rational
choices for myself. Those who defend positive freedom believe that just because no one is
preventing you from doing something, it does not follow that you are genuinely free. Positive
freedom is a matter of achieving your potential, not just having

  • 2. The Abstract Principles Of Sexuality And Race The abstract principles of sexuality and race have always been delicate ideas for society to comprehend. When you Google the word sexuality , you do not come across a gender specified definition that constricts males and females to desire only one another. It simply states that it is the sexual habits and desires of a person. Any person, male, female, transgender, or otherwise, can be sexual with whomever they desire. So why is the dichotomy of homosexualityversus heterosexuality such a pervasive notion? There are multiple myths and facts about sexual orientation. Case Western Reserve University, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the most LGBT friendly campuses in the country. On their website they host an page about their gender friendly campus that answers any common questions one might have about such issues. No one knows what causes sexual orientation. Many lesbian, gay and bisexual people know that they are attracted to members of their own sex at an early age, sometimes as young as 6 or 7 years old. Others learn much later in life, in their 30 s, 40 s or later still. Some research indicates that sexual orientation is determined between birth and age 3, but no one is sure what causes particular orientations. As for race, considering and supporting the theory of color on individuals and collaborating the ideas to our community, in my opinion, seems to be much more of a delicate matter than sexuality. The concept of race is a modern concept. In the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Aged only nineteen at the time of Caesars assassination in March 44BC Octavian s intelligence and fortitude proved successful over the barriers of youth, inexperience and the political opposition that he faced. Octavian went on to have one of the most famous political careers of all time to defeat the Senate, Marc Antony, and gain sole control over the Roman Empire. Antony s actions after Caesars death solidified his expectations of inheriting power as he moved to take control of Caesars assets, and publically read his will and he thought himself to be the strongest contender to carry on Caesars political legacy. To assert political power in the Roman Empire Octavian s first action was to gain loyalty among the Roman people and build his reputation. In Illyricum at the time of Caesars assassination he took with him a small group of friends that went to the south of Italy to visit Caesars allies and clients. Whilst there he assessed the position in Rome and the best course of action he could take to gain control. Once in Rome he concentrated on commemorating Caesars death and seeking vengeance against his assassins which was in contrast with Antony s views. Octavian then began to build a relationship with the Roman mob, they were one of Caesars main power bases and very influential in the Roman Empire. To build a positive relationship he first paid the legacies that were left to the people of Rome by Caesar. As the processing of Caesars will was held up and Antony refused to return Caesars money Octavian pad the people out of his own pocket. This action gained loyalty and began to pave the way for a constructive relationship between Octavian and the Roman people. This means that this phenomenon should be considered as forming part of the social and environmental risks that business firms needs to consider in developing their business strategies. If not, businesses would find themselves unprepared for the possible effects of global warming on their operations, profitability and even viability. In the case of the tourism industry, tourism businesses would not be prepared to address the actualization of problems caused by global warming if these firms do not understand the impact of this phenomenon and include preventive plans and alternative solutions in case these effects are actualized. This is to ensure the viability of tourism businesses or if not the shift in business strategy of these firms to adjust to the market and industry changes brought about by the manifestations of global warming. • 10. Summary Of The Protestant Ethic And The Spirit Of... Written between 1904 and 1905, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is the fundamental and best known work of Max Weber, a German philosopher and sociologist who was also a political man: I chose this book because I was curious about the theories on how capitalism emerged and because I have heard of Max Weberbefore which could make this report less complex for me. In this book Weber notes that the Protestant religion is the predominant among the German capitalist classes. With the difference between Protestant capitalists and Catholic capitalists, Weber concludes that Protestant ideology in one way or another promotes the construction of capitalism. Max Weber begins his book pointing out how there was a common factor in his society, business leaders and owners of capital, as well as the higher grades of skilled labour, and even more the higher technically and commercially trained personnel of modern enterprises, are overwhelmingly Protestant (3). This message unveils the sociological themes of the conflict theory and how culture affects society. His style of writing is expository and persuasive, for this book can be treated as a lengthy essay. Weber notes that the Protestant religion is the predominant among the German capitalist classes. Being the difference between Protestant capitalists and Catholic capitalists, Weber concludes that Protestant ideology in one way or another promotes the construction of capitalism. The ethics of capitalism argue that the supreme end of our life is the acquisition of wealth by themselves, the pursuit of enrichment is not seen as a means to an end; the capitalist entrepreneur does not seek to enrich himself to retire but seeks enrichment for himself. Enjoyment, rest or withdrawal are not the objectives of the capitalist mentality, although it may be the end of the members of capitalist economies that are not integrated into the system. One of the concepts that this book talks about is some of the essence of the macro level process of capitalism. He tried to correlate the fact that the people who have wealth and have the control over production, or capitalists, had a different way of seeing what was in front of them. He said that capitalism acts as an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Front De Liberation Du Quebec Active since 1963, the Front de Liberation du Quebec s (FLQ) violent actions in October 1970 cost Canadians citizens their rights and freedoms in an attempt to establish Quebec as a separate nation. Prior to Canada becoming a nation and to this date, Quebec has engaged in a tense relationship with English Canada and harbours longstanding resentments over language, religion and multiculturalism. Throughout the 1960 s, the province underwent profound change during the Quiet Revolution and Quebecnationalism soared. During this time, the FLQ organized several bombings and riots. The culmination of the FLQ s actions in 1970 is referred to as the October Crisiswhich translated into the kidnapping of British Trade Commissioner James Cross and the murder of Quebec Labour Minister Pierre Laporte. The October Crisis also represents Canada s only encounter with domestic terrorism and the third time the War Measures Act was invoked. The decision to invoke the War Measures Act was a controversial one made by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeauand Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa since it imposed national martial law. Upon examination of the FLQ s actions during the October Crisis, the response from the federal government and the impact on Quebec nationalism and the rest of Canada, it is apparent that the government handled the October Crisis tactfully and was correct to invoke the War Measures Act. Through the FLQ s violent history, the kidnapping of James Cross and the murder of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Philosophical Debate On Moral Responsibility Philosophical debate on moral responsibility has a long history. Thousands of years, many philosophers have debated on whether human beings are morally responsible for their actions. To answer this question, philosophers use terms like free will, determinism, compatibility and deservingness to help it. The question is still a major issue addressed today. To be morally responsible means to accept praise, blame, reward, or punishment for an act or omission in accordance with one s moral obligations. People could argue that they have free willor not. According to general knowledge of free will, free will can be defined as the ability to do things on ones own discretion. Thus, in this paper I will argue that humans are morally responsible for their actions. I will prove this by using the concepts of Free will and determinism. Free will in the sense that for humans to be morally responsible for an action, one has to be free and conscious of his or her decision. In the case of Determinism, the presence of causation and external forces has minimal effect or no effect on moral responsibility. Free will Human beings are morally responsible for their actions because they posess free will. Free will is a choice or a desire to do something of ones accord. According to Paul Edward, a philosopher, when we call an action free we mean that the agent is not compelled or constrained to perform it. (Edward). One might argue that people act in certain ways because they have been drugged or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also, I will talk and explain about the system and what could be improvements to the system. Adoption is an old process. Adoption is a process where parents who cannot provide for their kids can put them up for adoption to couples, or people would provide for the children. The concept of adoption was not legally recognized in the United States until the 1850 s. Back then there were no formal records of children being adopted. As the numbers of the informal adoption grew, they soon realized that they needed to get a legal process of started. • 14. The Effects Of Social Media On Australian Contemporary... BRIEF INTRODUCTION Good afternoon everyone I m here to talk about my Personal Interest Project, which is based around the topic area FoMo ( defined by the Oxford dictionary as an anxiety that an exciting or interesting event may currently be happening elsewhere, often aroused by posts seen on a social media website. ) and its relation to adolescents using social media in Australian contemporary society. FoMo is a concurrent issue in Australia (and internationally) amongst teenagers, FoMo refers to a blend of anxiety, irritation, inadequacy, and depression while skimming social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram FoMO is new, a concept brought about by the digital era. WHY I CHOSE... I initially chose this area of investigation because i had no other ideas for a PIP topic, time was running out, and so was my capacity for good ideas. However, with further investigation and reflection on personal experiences into FoMo, I soon began to find myself becoming more rapt with the phenomenon of how one photo or status update could impact an individual s self concept and wellbeing. Secondary research described the nature of FoMo as feelings of inadequacy and anxiety mainly catalysed by living in a Western Society. I thought it was interesting how even big marketing companies were using an internet meme as a basis for research. HYPOTHESIS And thus, i had decided my hypothesis would be: how FoMo has become a psychological reality entity and how it affects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Gender Roles In Disney Movies Disney is known for fairy tale films that are full of lovable characters that children cannot seem to get enough of. The traits of many of the characters are great models for children to watch and learn from. Adults tend to see a bit more than just the good qualities they embody, which leads to the realization that these films are far from perfect. Upon closer inspection, Disney films embrace patriarchal and sexist ideologies when it comes to their characters something that Disney has been nearly successful in eradicating in their most recent films. From the earliest films to the most recent, the portrayal of genderroles, of both the hero/heroine and the villain, has changed for the better. The earliest princesses, Snow White, Cinderella,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In response to criticism and to avoid being called sexist, Disney started using more male villains. According to Amy Davis, there exists several different types of male villain: pirate kings, enemies of the earth, magically dangerous, criminally dangerous, comic, and idiotic. Ratcliffe, from Pocahontas, is an enemy of the earth villain and concerned only with what wealth he can gain from the land. The Shadow Man, from The Princess and the Frog, is a magically dangerous villain and a practitioner of voodoo. He exerts his magical power to manipulate other people to do what he wishes, and his primary goal consists of becoming ridiculously wealthy. Shan yu, from Mulan, is a criminally dangerous and arrogant villain with a grandiose sense of self who is intent on conquering the whole of China. Hans, from Frozen, is probably a criminally dangerous villain, although he lacks mention in Davis s book. Being the youngest in his family, he feels as though he does not get anything he believes he deserves, so he manipulates Anna to gain access to her kingdom and wealth. Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast, is a comic villain composed of more brawn than brain. He only cares about acquiring wealth, a category that also includes Belle. • 16. Sonny s Character In The Rocket Boys My favorite character in Rocket Boys is Sonny s father, Homer Hickman. This may seem like an odd choice, given that Sonny s father is not always kind to Sonny, and often hinders him. Other times, however, he helps Sonny greatly. For example, in the beginning of the story, he pours Sonny s chemicals down the creek and forbids Sonny from launching rockets on company property. Afterwards, he shows Sonny an area where he is allowed to launch rockets, the place that becomes Cape Coalwood. Everything Sonny s father does often contradicts something done or said earlier in the book, which seems at first to be very confusing. These actions, however, all have a simple explanation. In her essay, Warde adopted a metaphor that the design for typefaces should be as transparent as crystal glass for wine (Warde, 1936, p.6). For instance, the tail of the a is gently curved in Helvetica, as is the first connection of the bowl to the stem, but not in Arial. During her time in London, Evelina is the victim of physical restraint. Innocent places like a garden, an opera house, or a carriage turn into a prison that can hold Evelina captive. • 26. Pevelance and Effects of Rape The Prevalence and Effects of Rape The prevalence of rape is a major social problem that plagues America and other countries around the world daily. Victims of rape are psychologically, and sometimes physically damaged from being sexually assaulted. Although it would seem that it is a sexually motivated crime, rape is actually an act of violence in which sex is used as a weapon against a powerless victim (Kendall 197). Neither rapists, nor rape victims are concentrated to one specific class or race. However, American women aged 16 24 are considered to be at the greatest risk of sexual assault (Aronowitz, Lambert, and Davidoff 173). The majority of rapists are age twenty five and younger. Almost all rape cases have female victims with male offenders. Men account for only 10% of all rape victims, and in some cases their rapist is also male. In regards to statistics, rape appears rare because of victims fears that they will not be believed, or have stigmas about rape now attached to them(Egan and Wilson 345). According to Wolitzk Taylor et al., approximately 1 in 7 US women have been raped in their lifetimes. Estimates from the 1990s and 2000s indicate that only 16% to 20% of forcible rape victims report the rape to law enforcement (Wolitzky Taylor et al. 582). However, through each of those events the two must remember to keep the intimacy, the letting down of emotional barriers and the expression of innermost thoughts and feelings, that which makes friendships thrive must be an enjoyable one and to always interact (Karbo 3). Although psychologists continue to research the formation of friendships the great philosopher Aristotle knew exactly how friendships formed and how the lasted. In the book Aristotle and the Philosophy of Friendship, (based off the Nicomachean Ethics) the author, Pangle, informed the audience that Aristotle believe in three different types of friendships based off three different types of motives: Friendships of Utility, Friendships of Pleasure, and Perfect Friendship. I can t sit down for extended periods of time and enjoy a good book like I used to. When I was in elementary school, and even when I was going into high school, I was never seen without a book. When I was younger I could finish a new book every single week. But it was very easy for me to fall out of love with reading as I was being introduced to new technologies. It started with a Nintendo Wii. Sometimes I find it difficult to admit that I even owned one, but the best way to get over embarrassment is to talk about it right? Never the less, it was the beginning of the end of my love for reading. My earliest recollections about reading and writing were very enjoyable for me. Reading had a huge impact on my life. In a way, I guess you could even say that some of these experiences made me as literate and knowledgeable as I am today. It was the first time in my life that I can truly remember feeling genuinely good about myself. A while after I had gotten a Nintendo Wii, I got my first cell phone. It was a Nokia. Obviously it was nothing special, but at the time it was extremely useful and I loved having it around. I then moved on to own an HTC and now an IPhone. And not long after I got my IPhone, I bought a Playstation 4, an Xbox 360, and a Playstation 2. I honestly believe that technology was the main reason I stopped reading. Recombinant Dna Techniques Essay In this experiment, individuals were able to use recombinant DNA techniques such as cloning to alter the DNA of a certain strain of yeast called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. By the use of cloning, scientists are able to analyze and compare the genetic material of a specific organism to another. In this lab, the recombinant DNAtechniques are used to transform AmpS E. Coli to AmpR E. Coli. This was done by using an insert, a vector, and a host. The insert was S. Cerevisiae genomic DNA, E. Coli plasmid was the vector, and E. Coli was the host. The technique of gel electrophoresis was also used to determine whether the DNA was cut or not with restriction enzymes. Uncut sequences of the DNA were sent to an outside laboratory for sequencing. Then when the sequencing was complete, computer programs, such as BLAST, were used to determine whether or not the genomic insert originates from a gene and if the yeast codes for a protein that could be found within the human genome. Introduction Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, more commonly known as baker s yeast or brewer s yeast, is very favorable to use in biotechnology because of the wide range of environmental conditions it could live in. S. Cerevisiae is capable to live from freezing temperatures to about 55в—¦C, proliferate from 12в—¦C to 40в—¦C, grow within the pH range of 2.8 8.0, could be dried almost completely and still come back alive with the addition of water, grow and ferment at sugar concentrations of 3M, and can tolerate up to a ... His views can be interpreted many different ways, but most would agree that he sought out wisdom and truth for the betterment of himself and his community. Though Socrates was one of the most intelligent men of his time, he was very foolish to never write his own book. For this reason, after his passing, one of his students, Plato, began to write a book about his teachings and ideas called Plato: Five Dialogues. In this book, we examined Plato s Meno in which Meno asks Socratescan virtue be taught? but, Socrates quickly transforms this question into what is virtue? . This questions ultimately consumes the entirety of this dialogue, and in the end, Meno proves to lack originality in his arguments by simply agreeing with each thing Socrates states. While Meno thought he knew the answer to this question, Socrates provides a different opinion. Although Meno does not learn anything in the course of this dialogue, Socrates still remains one of the most influential teachers and philosophers of his time. In this essay I shall focus on the question of who is Socrates, next I will examine what teaching and learning really mean, and finally I will conclude with the fact that Meno does not actually learn anything from Socrates. They may not have personal known him but they know of the great things that he has done to make the world a better place. To them, it is what made his deathdifficult and sad. However, if we lived in a warrior society his death would not have something to mourn; instead we would celebrate his life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scyld s funeral is not a somber occasion, but rather a joyous celebration. The people do not mourn that he is dead but rather rejoice for the life that he led. Their celebration shows that they do not grieve death. In this warrior society death is seen as honorable. The one who has died has given the ultimate sacrifice, death, for their people. They may have followed their leader into battle and died or they may have died of old age as is the case with Scyld. This is confirmed later on when Beowulf is speaking Hrothgar on the death of his best thane. Beowulf states, Wise sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. Let whoever can win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark (lines 1384 89). This statement solidifies what is hinted at earlier on in the epic during Scyld s funeral. It is part of a heroic code. Death is what comes to people who have earned it in their dedication to a cause or great warriors who have earned it. Since death is found to be so honorable, the people do not mourn for the loss of their king but celebrate his death. • 41. What Causes Obesity Is The Relationship Of Energy Intake... The most rudimentary explanation for what causes obesity is the relationship of energy intake and expenditure and its effect on energy balance. If energy intake is greater than energy expenditure, weight gain will occur. In contrast, energy expenditure in excess of energy intake will result in weight loss ( Dietz Gortmaker, 2001). However, Obesity is a complex disease that involves interactions between genetics, regulation of energy balance, and strong environmental influences such as increased caloric intake and decreased physical activity in today s modern society. The genetic approach both in animal models and in humans has allowed immense progress in the understanding of body weight regulation. Monogenic forms of obesity in humans have been characterized and result from mutations in genes involved in the central pathways of food intake regulation. However, these cases are extremely rare and generally obesity must be considered as a complex polygenic disease involving interactions between multiple genes and the environment (Clement Ferre, 2003) Genetics There are several genetic factors that contribute to an individual s predisposition towards obesity in a common environment. Several investigators have provided evidence for an association between candidate genes and obesity related phenotypes. Currently, there are greater than 600 genes, markers and chromosomal regions linked to obesity related phenotypes (PГ©russe et al., 2005). In a large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dehumanization Of Jewish People During The Holocaust Nathan Vondergeest Mrs. Cummins English 2 9/28/15 Dehumanization of Jewish People during the Holocaust Imagine being treated like cattle living one s life inside a fence, starved, killed for no reason. Would one hang on to their humanity, or would they let go of their hope, their compassion, their faith? From 1939 to 1945, the Nazi German military systematically kidnapped, tortured and killed millions of Jews in their twisted effort to racially purify Germany. This genocide has come to be known as the Holocaust. During the Holocaust, millions of Jews were mercilessly beaten, sadistically experimented upon, and killed for pleasure. Through these three ways, the Jewish people were treated as subhuman; through these three ways, the Jewish people began to believe it themselves. Jewish people were subjected to terrible beatings, powerless at the hands of the German soldiers. Evidence of this can be found in Night, Elie Wiesel s memoir of his experience as a Jewish captive of Nazi Germany. When his father asks to use a bathroom, Elie claims the Kapo slapped [his] father with such force that he fell down and then crawled back to his place on all fours (Wiesel 39). Obviously, such force exhibited by this Kapo was in humane and uncalled for; these acts, and this attitude of violence and condescension taken by the German Kapos, contributed to the dehumanization of the Jewish people. • 52. Different Models And Theories Associated With Adult Learning There is several different models and theories associated with adult learning. Through my research it seems that andragogy is the first thing educators think of when adult learning process is mentioned. Malcolm Knowles says, Andragogy is the art and science of helping others learn (Merriam, Caffarella, Baumgartner, 2007). Andragogy are learningstrategies focused on adults. It is often interpreted as the process of engaging adultlearners with the structure of the learning experience (Clardy, 2005). Andragogy is an assumption that there are different characteristics and requirements when it comes to learning between adults and children. Therefore, the learning procedures used in teaching adults must be altered from the pedagogical procedures related to teaching children. Andragogy is based on five assumptions concerning the adult learner (ASTD, 2007). First is the assumption that as a person matures, their self concept moves from a dependent personality towards more of a self directing personality. (Merriam et al., 2007). At this point the learner is considered self directed. The second assumption is that an adult accumulates a growing reservoir of experience, which is a rich resource for learning (Merriam et al., 2007). Basically, adults can utilize their experiences to influence themselves and others. Third, the readiness for an adult to learn is in close relation to the developmental tasks of the adult s social role. (Clardy, 2005). This readiness to learn is a direct ... Observation and Measurement in Human Services Research Observation and measurement in human services research Types of reliability The theory of reliability states that it is impossible to calculate the reliability of a study in an exact way. Instead, reliability is estimated and this creates an imperfection in research. There are four major types of reliability. The first is inter rater or inter observer reliability. This means the reliability that is used to assess the degree to which the different people who are observing or rating the items being studied give estimates that are consistent regarding the same phenomenon. A good example is the popular example of a glass half empty and one that is half full. This is to mean that people who are in essence similar in every nature may have different ideas or views of the same phenomenon. This kind of reliability is estimated by using a pilot study which is used to establish the expected reliability in the main study(Rosnow Rosenthal, 2012). The second form of reliability is the test retest reliability. This kind of reliability is used to assess the consistency of a measure from one period of time to another. This reliability is estimated when the same test is administered to the same sample group but at two different periods in time. This approach makes an assumption that there is no substantial change in the construct that is being measures in the two different occasions(Rosnow Rosenthal, 2012). Although Vocera was considered as a mobility, communication platform, COHC has made a significant investment with the use of the Apple iPhone and therefore the use of Vocera would be a costly change in direction. Ouellette (2017) and Webb (2017) agreed that the next step would be to explore the medical equipment integration capabilities of Connexall s alarm management middleware solution. Medical Equipment Interoperability. The project team evaluated the five primary types of medical equipment systems that were determined that interoperability would be critical by NICU clinicians for effective communication. Ouellette (2017) investigated critical medical equipment to determine the feasibility for integration with alarm management middleware and mobile applications. The NICU clinical team identified the Phillips patient monitoring, pumps, incubator, ventilator and the nurse call as medical equipment that is vital to their workflow. Physiological Monitoring. The Philips patient monitoring system can be centrally managed and has the ability to send patient alarm data from the medical device via a transmission protocol to the middleware alarm system. The system also has localized visibility and audible sounds on the local patient monitor inside the patient room ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Ramps Height This investigation seeks to determine the distance that a marble can travel after leaving a ramp with retrospect to the ramps height. This experiment wished to find the relationship between the height of the ramp and the distance that the marble will travel from the end of the ramp (Diagram 1, value d). The ramp is positioned on top of a bench with the height of the ramp being the dependent variable. The reason that this subject is important is because it demonstrates a wide understanding of linear motion. Secondly, this scenario has some extremely relevant physics components present in many fields of experience, for example calculating the projectile of an unguided missile, or calculating how particular objects are going to be affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the experiment is undertaken the distance from the ramp to the landing position of the ball is recorded (value d in diagram 1). This means that the formula, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 can be used to find the vertical component, however, (t) time is required for this formula. Using the equation v=dtthe time can be found. vt=dt(dt=height of the table) t=dv Both the distance (d) and velocity (v) are known so they can be substituted into the equation to find time (t). Going back to the original equation Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 the known values can be added to the equation, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2where X1= initial position and Vv= initial velocity в€ ґXv=12at2(Note X1= 0 and Vv = 0) This equation now has to be derived to calculate the vertical velocity. Vv=at The vertical component therefore has a velocity of the acceleration (gravity = 9.8ms^ 1) multiplied by the time. With two sides of a right angle triangle being known a2+b2=c2can be used to find the last velocity. a = 2ghr b = att = dtvv= ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. Positive Freedom In Isaiah Berlin The notion of positive freedom in Isaiah Berlin Introduction Freedom can mean many different things. Here we re concerned with political freedom. Isaiah Berlin distinguished between a concept of negative freedom and a concept of positive freedom. You will examine these concepts and learn to recognize the difference between freedom from constraint and the freedom that comes from self mastery or self realization. It is not a question of having more, or more significant, opportunities: the opportunity for me to study is there now. Rather it is a question of being able to take advantage of the opportunity by being in control of my life. Positive freedom in this example is a matter of my having the capacity to take the rational option as well as having the opportunity: whereas, according to a concept of negative freedom, the opportunities that I have alone determine the extent of my freedom. I am free to study in the negative sense since no one is preventing me from doing it; no one has locked away my books, or hidden my pen and paper; no one has dragged me out of the door to go to the movies, or chained me to my easy chair in front of the television. However, I am not free in the positive sense; I am not truly free, because I am a slave to my tendency to be sidetracked. True positive freedom would involve seizing control of my life and making rational choices for myself. Those who defend positive freedom believe that just because no one is preventing you from doing something, it does not follow that you are genuinely free. Positive freedom is a matter of achieving your potential, not just having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
