HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
According to Richards & Rodgers (2014) there are three main shifts of
language teaching:
• Major trends in 20-century
• Alternative 20-century approaches and methods
• Current approaches and methods
DEFINITION
Community Language Learning (CLL) is an educational method
where the learning experience is seen as a social process and
emphasises the concept of whole-person learning. In CLL, teachers act
as facilitators (called counsellors) rather than traditional instructors.
This method emphasizes a nondefensive learning environment where
learners work together in groups, often sitting in circles to promote a
sense of community.
DEFINITION
CLL Method takes its principles from the more general
Counselling-Learning approach developed by Charles A. Curran in the
1970s
DEFINITION-DERIVED PRINCIPLES
Whole-person learning means that teachers consider not only their
students’ intellect, but:
1. have some understanding of the relationship among students’
feelings
2. physical reactions
3. instinctive protective reactions
4. and desire to learn.
DEFINITION-DERIVED PRINCIPLES
A language counsellor does not mean someone trained in
psychology; it means someone who is a skilful ‘understander’ of the
struggle students face as they attempt to internalize another language.
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 1: Introduction
• Take Seats
• Introductions
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 2: Preparation for Conversation
• Plan Announcement
• Explain conversation plan
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 3: Conducting the Conversation
• Conversation started, with
teacher-assisted translation
• Record and discuss
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 4: Post-Conversation Analysis
• Students share and discuss
the experience
• Teacher writes and translates
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 5: Language Practice
• Practice pronunciation through
reading
• Pronunciation exercises
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 6: Creative Application
• Students use the news words
in sentences
THE EXPERIENCE | Phase 7: Ongoing Language Development
• Continues focus on skills with
practice
RETHINKING THE EXPERIENCE
There are five stages of Community Language Learning (CLL):
Stage (I) Reflection and Planning.
Stage (II) Translation and Recording.
Stage (III) Listening and Analysis.
Stage (IV) Practice and Experimentation.
Stage (V) Evaluation and Review.
RETHINKING THE EXPERIENCE
In Stages I, II, III
Main focus is on:
Being supporting of learners
Subordinate focus is on:
Fluency
In Stages IV, V
Main focus is on:
Fluency
Subordinate focus is on:
Being supporting of learners
RETHINKING THE EXPERIENCE
There are six elements for nondefensive learning in the Community
Language Learning (CLL) method, abbreviated as (SAARRD):
• Security.
• Aggression.
• Attention.
• Reflection.
• Retention.
• Discrimination.

CONCLUSION AND RECAP
• ‘Learning is persons,’ which means that whole-person learning of
another language takes place best in a relationship of trust, support,
and cooperation between teacher and students and among students.
• ‘Learning is dynamic and creative,’ which means that learning is an
ongoing developmental process.
