The Only Crime Is Pride Critical Lens
Reflection Essay The quote Think: all men make mistakes, But a good man yields when he
Knows his course is wrong, And repairs the evil: The only Crime is pride, said by Teiresias.
(This excerpt is from Antigone, by the classical Greek playwright Sophocles.) This quote can
mean several different things. It all depends on how you interpret it. I believe that Teiresias is
explaining that a good man knows how to admit when he is wrong and tries to fix the problem
that his mistake has caused. The only crime is pride. Teiresias is demonstrating the negative side of
a man and what bad guys do instead. There is no crime in being wrong, however, when someone s
pride is blinding them from admitting their wrongs , then that is when someone... Show more

We are going to mess up. We were created to make mistakes so that way we could learn from
them. It is our job to fix our miscalculations. Letting your pride keep you from telling the truth
will result in a worse outcome than the original predicament. Teiresias makes it clear that it is
alright to make mistakes, but trying to cover the mistakes up is not the right thing to do. Think
about it, every time you choose to tell a lie you have to tell 1,000 more just to cover up the first
lie. Wouldn t it just me easier to tell the truth? It takes a good man to confess his wrongs, those
who can not always find themselves in bad predicaments all the time. Telling the truth is always
the way to go. I use to have the hardest time confessing the things that I do incorrectly. It was
hard for me to accept that I could mess up, but when I got older I started playing sports. Playing
basketball and soccer you have to confess to the things you did/do wrong or otherwise you will
not be able to improve as a player. Now I am the first to admit what I have done before my
coaches even have the time to acknowledge what I did wrong. This makes the situation easier and
makes my coaches job simpler as

The morning ritual for millions of Americans is waking up in the morning and drinking their
favorite blend of coffee. What would happen if you didn t drink coffee and changed this routine?
How would you react? What would you do instead? What would you realize? Habits have this
insurmountable power that can shape every aspect of our lives. From the way we dress, to what
we eat, to how we communicate can all reflect back to comfort, personality, and routine with
controlling aspects in our lives. We act this way because society believes it is acceptable or we
dress this way to remain professional in the workplace. It s possible this thought process could be

The Selection of Task Reasoning The selection of this task presented several reasons for choosing to
work with confronting sexual orientation and homophobia. I initially was curious about working
with task because of my current residence in relationship the task. In research conducted by
Schrimshaw, Siegal, DowningJr., and Parsons (2013) outlined the correlations of socioeconomic
status and social support as predictors of maintaining concealment of sexual orientation.
Furthermore the impact of internalized homophobia of self and others can significantly impact an
individual s level of comfort associated with concealment. Personally, living in a town with
varying levels of SES and social support of same sex couples led me to choose this task.
Additionally, choosing this task led me to understand the perceptions of where I lived and to gain a
deeper understanding related to further research necessary with this population.
There were many reasons as to why I choose this task. It specifically led me to looking at the
political perspective related to same sex couples. Research conducted by Slenders, Sieben, and
Verbakel (2014) studied the relationship of tolerance amongst 40 European countries and found that
the use of legislation and political party can influence or deter tolerance towards homosexuality. In

Taking a Look at Audio Compression
Audio compression is most important strategies in multimedia applications in recent years. In
communication, the main objective is to communicate without noise and loss of information. This
paper emphasis the enhanced lossless compression and noise suppression in mobile phones and
hearing aids. An effective technique is needed to transfer the audio signals with reduced bandwidth
and storage space, without noise and loss of information in the signal during compression. Wavelet
transformation method produces better lossless compression than other methods. The proposed
method uses Haar wavelet and the algorithm used for lossless compression and noise reduction
are: MLT PSPIHT ( Modulated Lapped Transform Perceptual Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees)
and HANC (Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling) algorithm.
Keywords: Audio lossless compression, noise suppression, Haar wavelet, MLT SPIHT algorithm,
HANC algorithm.
INTRODUCTION:
Audio compression technique is increasingly becomes more significant in multimedia applications,
since it produce extensively reduced bit rate than the original signal, the bandwidth , storage space
and expense for the transmission of audio signal is also reduced correspondingly.
General frame work of audio compression
In specific to the multimedia application, the suppression of noise and the compression with no
loss of data is most mandatory in the use of mobile phones and hearing aids. Due to the
transmission of signal along with the noises like

She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb Essay
Before taking this course, I always looked at films and read books just as the average person
does; interesting plot and how long will it hold my interest, but this course gave me an entire
different perspective when watching films and reading books. Now that I have taken this course
and have watched the required films, the most important thing when watching other movies and
reading books, is the meaning behind each scene and how they relate and affect our world. For
this paper, I will discuss a book that I read a long time ago, which is She s Come Undone by
Wally Lamb and how this book relates to this course. She s Come Undone is a story about a girl
named Dolores Price. In this book, the author takes you through Dolores life, starting... Show more

In this particular film Harold was very interested in death, and because of this he attempted many
fake suicide attempts as a cry for help and attention. When Harold meets a woman named Maude,
she teaches him many life lessons and the importance of living life to the fullest. In turn Harold
opens up to her about his thoughts and feelings and the two of them become great friends. This
film relates to She s Come Undone because just like Harold, Dolores battled her own issues and
attempted suicide. Both of these characters meet people who help them understand that life is
worth living no matter the struggles or hardships we face. With Harold, there was Maude and
for Dolores, there was Dr. Shaw. Dr. Frost mentioned something in the notes that I believe helped
both of these characters get through there hard times and that is: One of the most powerful and
saving emotions is laughter. It helps keep us healthy both emotionally and physically. We can
literally laugh our way out of illness! During the talks with Maude and the therapy sessions with
Dr. Shaw, both Harold and Dolores were able to laugh through their troubles. As I mentioned
before, I really enjoyed this course because it gave me a different perspective on what to look for
when watching films and read books. She s Come Undone was a great book the first time I read it
and even better this time around. This book relates to the other films as well, but the

Have you ever tried a slice of real, famous New York pizza? It s nearly impossible to find that
quality outside of NY, especially down here in the South. However, I had heard of this place right
off Issaqueena Trail in Clemson that claimed to take you to New York City with one bite. After
visiting Joe s, I realized they weren t lying! Joe s New York Pizzasets the bar high for other pizza
places due to its high food quality, prompt service, and overall welcoming environment. The sun
hung low in the sky as I walked up to the entrance to Joe s. When the front door opened, scents of
roasted garlic, melted cheese, and spices and a smile greeted me. The place was spotless with
glimmering floors, and the glass looked like you could put your hand through it. There was no
mistaking that this was a Clemson oriented shop; orange and purple tables, booths, chairs, and
walls filled the building. On the main wall, there was a mural stretching to both ends depicting a
roaring tiger, Death Valley post win, and a plethora of Clemson sports. Towards the back of the
dining room, there was an open kitchen, guarded by two stainless steel shelves. I could see the
industrial oven through the window, as they pulled out hot, freshly baked pizzas, cut them, and sent
them on. Sounds of clanking plates, a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Doctor Found Polyps, Now What?
Doctors recommend having regular colonoscopy screenings beginning at age 50, because being
over that age is the greatest single risk factor for developing colon polyps. In fact, the American
Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (http://www.asge.org/patients/patients.aspx?id=396)
estimates that one out of every four seniors has at least one polyp. And that excludes those who
have other risk factors for developing colon cancer or other growths. This means about 25 percent

During these lab tests, specially trained technicians will be able to determine if they contain cancer,
have a potential to develop into malignant masses or if their characteristics indicate other polyps
may form in the same area in the future.
A polypectomy is considered a routine part of a colonoscopy, and does not typically complicate
the outpatient screening. While very rare, there are a few possible complications that can occur
as a result of having a polyp removed. These are usually minor, and can often be corrected during
the colonoscopy. They include bleeding from the site where the polyp was removed, and the
possibility of perforating the colon. Although a colonoscopy can identify about 95 percent of all
polyps (http://www.medicinenet.com/colon_polyps
/page4.htm#how_are_colon_polyps_diagnosed), some polyps may be too large or dangerous to
remove during the screening. In some cases, the growths will be biopsied to determine if they
could be cancerous. Treatment of non cancerous polyps may include endoscopic removal spread
over several colonoscopies. Cancerous, precancerous or symptomatic polyps may require surgical

Two problems with interventions and outcomes
Patient was nothing by mouth (NPO) for a procedure. When I was at clinical his nutritional status
was changed from to NPO clear liquid diet. While the patient was NPO he was complaining about
having a dry mouth and being hungry. Discussing NPO discontinuation with the physician was a
great intervention. The patient could start a clear liquid diet during my time with him. He was
satisfied and was not complaining about not being able to eat. This was also a positive outcome to
prevent skin breakdown from dry, chapped lips.
Patient was ordered to receive immunizations for the flu and pneumonia as discussed before. By
looking at the patient s charge it appeared he was refusing his vaccinations. The problem with him
not being vaccinated is increased risk of these virus, which create more complications with the
older adults over 65 years old. I intervened by discussing positive and negative outcomes of the
vaccine. I found that he had the flu vaccine already and was interested in the pneumococcal vaccine.
The outcome was positive and he is vaccinated now, fighting against the flu and

Seventeen years later, all of my older children were lined up at the front of the church, with the
minister in the middle, along with the siblings of their soon to be husbands. My oldest daughters
wanted to get married at the same time, and no amount of fatherly persuasion could convince them
otherwise, so I walked both of them down the aisle at the same time, one on the right arm, and the
other on the left. My younger children carried and threw flower petals, or carried the rings, and
other ceremonial portions of the service.
More than anything, I was simply praying that my daughters would be serious enough not to pull
any pranks during the service, or for one of them to catch fire during the service as one of the men
of honor had done the night of dress rehearsals when he backed into a lit candle and his mullet
ignited.
Our minister knew these two girls, plus their 12 other biological siblings, and the half dozen other
adopted children my wife and I raised, and at times buried. The minister who performed their
dedication in infancy was also the same one who was about to perform the marriage, and he knew
my kids penchant for creative mischief, but all of them had sworn to be on their best behavior and
all of them of course promised that there would be no pranks at their own weddings.

Roots of Anti-Semitism Essay
After learning about the Holocaust, I ve asked myself many times how this could have happened.
Why would anyone believe it s acceptable to massacre an entire people? This is my reasoning for
writing my paper on how Christian theology influenced anti Semitism. Much of the Holocaust
appears to have it s beginning with Christian theology. I will begin my paper with the early writings
of Christians and continue chronologically until after World War II.
The Apostle Paul was one the first people to criticize the Jewish people. At first, he tried to explain
to the Christians not to adopt a superior attitude towards the Jews.

quot; The Gospel of John contains some of the most hostile anti Jewish statement in the Christian
scriptures. So sharp is the contrast in that gospel between Jesus exhortations to his followers to love
one another and the hostile references to the Jews...John is a gospel of Christian love and Jew

Some examples of John s apparent sentiments towards the Jewish people include the following.

[JOHN 18:36]

Many scholars believe the Jews and Christians were still worshipping together around the middle
of the first century. They discussed and acknowledged their differences, like a family fight. Yet,
towards the end of the first century their relationships deteriorated. After the destruction of the
second Temple in 70 CE, the Gentiles appeared to break away from the Jews. Jewish leaders who

so many new forms of literature introduced during the first and second centuries? When researching

depicting what is fact or fiction. This due mostly to the fact that much of the history of these

Causes Of The Treaty Of Versailles In Germany
In 1919, after World War I, a representative from England (Lloyd George), Italy (Orlando), France
(Clemenceau) and the US (Woodrow Wilson) came together, agreeing that Germany was at fault
for the cost of the damage that world war one had caused and drafted the Treaty of Versailles. The
main terms of the Treaty were:
That the starting of World War One was Germanys fault
The amount of 6,600 million pounds was to be paid by Germany for the damage the war caused
Germany s army was restructured to a small army with only six naval ships.
Germany had land taken from them and give to other countries.
Germany itself was in hardship due to World War One. Although they were forced to accept the
blame, the country was very poor, jobs were hard to find, food and basic goods were too costly.
The people of Germany were unhappy and thus put their trust in the power of a man who promised
to defend them against the Treaty of Versailles. This man was Adolf Hitler. In 1993 Adolf Hitler
became the Chancellor of Germany. Hitler s actions:
Built up an army, increasing it s weapons size, warships and the air force. He also introduced
compulsory military service. All of this was done in attempted secrecy to the other countries.
The rise of communism was real to the European nations. France and Britain, although aware of the
actions of Hitler, thought Germany may help prevent this rise of communism in the West.
In 1936, Hitler made alliances with Italy and Japan.

Various Global Marketing Environments
Various Marketing Environments
All the factors that are external to the organization form the marketing environment for it. These
factors also form the marketing environment when we talk about it in a global context. These
factors cannot be controlled, even though the marketers can influence these factors to some extent.
Social environment can have a great deal of effect on marketing globally. By the social environment
we mean the consumption trends of groups and individuals. The main factors that come under the
category of social environment are demographic and cultural trends. These two factors mainly
control the social environment for marketing. Economic environment consists of the relationship
between the production of goods and their purchase in a particular set up. The economic
environment also explains the consumption power of the customers. The market activities are also
influenced by the political and legal environment. This implies that the market will suffer if there
any potential threats and it will grow if the conditions are peaceful. Moreover the laws and
regulations of a particular country also constraint the activities of the marketers; however most of
the marketers are able to identify the opportunities that result from the regulations and political
trends (Vitullo Martin, 1997).
If marketers want to make a good deal of profit, they need to keep a constant check on the
technological advances. Many innovative techniques have been introduced that have

Literature Of Old Kingdom Egypt Served
The Instruction literature of Old Kingdom Egypt served as a means to educate and guide its
audience in an artistic manner. These texts were highly regarded by ancient Egyptians, as some of
their greatest writers wrote instruction literature. Most of these texts were also administrative, and
therefore intended to be read by a large audience. The contents of these texts included themes of
personal morality, personal behavior, social norms, strategic behavior, and general advice about life.
As a patriarchal society, the ancient Egyptian authors were not as concerned with instructions for
women, but rather, how men should treat women. Today s American culture has granted women
many more liberties; however, cultural norms still deem the man... Show more content on

Regardless, the texts shed some light on the cultural values of their intended audience. The
introduction of the instructions clarifies why Ptahhotep thought it was necessary to write
instructions for the people, for no one is born wise (Simpson, 131). Following a narration,
Ptahhotep begins by addressing his son. Among the first instructions, silence and moderation are
seen as important aspects of Ma at, or the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, and
honor. Ptahhotep then discusses how to deal with nobility as well as the proper treatment of a son,
a wife, relatives, and friends. The instructions conclude with discussion of more political aspects of
ancient Egyptian life, including how to deal with noblemen and how to act as a nobleman, which
Ptahhotep was likely concerned with since he was an official. One statement of note is Ptahhotep s
advice that one should Follow [their] heart as long as [they] live (Simpson, 135). At first glance,
from an American perspective, the statement comes across as quite idealistic and modern:
Ptahhotep seems to advise young people to follow their emotions. However, it is important to note
that ancient Egyptians did not associate emotion with the

Forensic Anthropology
Not many people realize that bones can talk, if you listen close enough and have the right
education. Forensic Anthropology is the study of talking bones or more properly as told by Burns
(2013), the discipline that applies the scientific knowledge of physical anthropology (and often
archeology) to the collection and analysis of legal evidence (p.3). This discipline brings together
the fields of physical anthropology, biology, and many other physical sciences to allow for the
proper identification of mostly human remains. The basis of forensic anthropology is to help
solve cases using the extensive knowledge of bones that has been built up over the years and is
still being shaped today. The first recorded use of skeletal information on... Show more content on

Also, the vertebrae and pubic symphysis can help discover the estimated age. If the forensic
anthropologist is using the vertebrae, they would have to look at the epiphyseal to see if it is
either absent, in the process of fusing, fully fused, or completely destroyed. They can also check
if osteoarthritis is becoming present, if the line of fusion is visible or no longer noticeable and if
the bone has become porous. Lastly, the pubic symphysis can be used. There are ten phases that
the bone endures from the age of 18 to 50 and upward. The changes of the pubic symphysis are
similar to the vertebrae with looking for the fusion or ossification of certain parts of the bone.
However, depending on the sex of the decedent, there are variations of testing for age because of
childbirth within women causing destructive trauma to the bone. Nonetheless, anthropologists do

Green Mountain High School Research Paper
Off Period
Most freshmen at Green Mountain High School could greatly benefit by having an off period I
sure would! High Schools need to make changes to the freshmen schedule to accommodate for an
off period so that freshmen are less stressed, have more quality time to do their work, and show up
on time more often. If students want more credits or have to take an extra class then, they can
choose to have an off period.
Each teacher in each period expects your best until dismissal. Having seven classes give you
projects to do at home and work to be done in class with possible tests coming up is stressful for a
freshman who just came from a middle school and is just getting into the motions of high school.
With vague projects and ones that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At home, or elsewhere, students may not feel like doing homework and instead play games, hang
out with friends, go online, or anything else. A paper that would normally take an hour could
take two or more at home. Frustration from not knowing what to do or having too much to do
could cause a one to disdain homework in general or from a specific teacher resulting in giving
up on that class/s. Students that don t have access to the internet and have to type a paper or
research could utilize the time that an off period gives, especially during block days when periods
are 90 minutes long. Off periods not only give pure work time, but allows more time to do
necessary tasks before, during, and after school.
It is incontrovertible that not everyone is a morning person or can get to school on time without
any complications, so if freshmen who are frequently tardy could get first period off, then that
would give them more time to sleep, to get to school, and to get ready for the day as their brains
might start working later in the day. Students with siblings that need to get to other schools which
are far away could have plausible difficulty arriving on time as it is common that schools start

Disadvantages Of Technology And Media
Impacts of Technology and Media Baym (2015), Murthy (2013), and Andrejevic (2013) together
demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages that technology and media have on today s society.
These three authors provide multiple thoughts that relate to each other, but also have different
outlooks on many other points. Social mediaallows the immediate spread of information. While
Twitter has negative effects on humans, some research shows that there it is possible to have
positive outcomes as well. Murthy (2013) focuses on how Twitter has helped shape communication
in today s world. Unlike most social media sites, Twitter uses a 140 character count to ensure
messages are concise. Translating complex thoughts into just one hundred or so words can be
challenging for most, but the message will turn out just as powerful, if not more. Baym (2015)
stated that new technologycould have a positive impact on families In the context of contemporary
digital media, the hope remains that new communication technologies will bring families and
loved ones together (p. 41). For example, if a child had something to say to their parents that was
very important, they might feel more comfortable doing it through technology. People find it
easier to text or post something rather than saying it face to face because it gives people more
time to choose the perfect wording. Once a person say something verbally, there is no delete key to
take back the words that were said. New forms of technology and media are being used without
forethought, which is causing mania, panic, and misinformation. Baym (2013) proposes different
theories to support the various consequences of machines. Technological determinism being one of
her perspectives, argues that machines change humans (Baym, 2015, p. 27). An example of
machines altering humans would be the constant desire to have the newest technological device.
Not only is it a negative aspect to be controlled by machines, but it can also be detrimental to the
human character to believe that in order to function properly one must have the most advanced
machine by their side. Similarly to Baym (2015), Andrejevic (2013) discusses the dangers of

The book, The Latehomecomer, is a fascinating story about a Hmong family and their struggle to

they do not want to forget their culture. One can clearly see that the Hmong people hold close their
identity and do not want to conform to the Vietnamese way. They take pride in their culture, their

It was very tough for the Hmong s that were still in Vietnam and Laos after the war. The American
armed forces was these people s only protection and after they just picked up and left for their
home shores the Hmong people that were still alive faced severe hardships. They had no food
and water and most of their homes were all destroyed. Most of the men and young adult boys
were killed in the war and the Vietnamese and Laos soldiers were still pursing the Hmong people
because they wanted to terminate the Hmong people. It was also tough for the Hmong people
that were left because the American s had stopped bringing food drops along with medical
supplies. I believe family is such an important part in this family s life because they are all that
each other has got. They hold close to their family because they have been through so much and
they see death all around them, so they see the importance of their family. They also are taught
from a very young age to respect their elders in the family because they have seen much more
and know much more about all aspects of life. They are viewed as wise and knowledgeable and
the young family members cherish the opportunity to learn from them. In the movie Gran Torino

Example Of Existentialism
Existentialism is a movement in philosophy and literature that began in the mid to late 19th and
reach its peak in mid 20th century, and was largely spread through the works of French
existentialist like Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir (Mastin L, 2008). There
is no agreed definition of existentialism, as those who are considered as existentialist do not share
the same exact thought on the subject though the starting point may be fairly linked. Jean Paul
Sartre, defines existentialism as a school of thought where one s existence comes before his
essence. Being an atheist existentialist, he argues that there is no God and that man existed first
and defines himself afterwards. Thus there is no human nature, because there is no God to have a
conception of it. Man simply is (Jean Paul Sartre,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eliza Binte Elahi (2014), explains that metaphysics deals with questions that can t be answered

questioning the pure existence of human beings on earth. TS Eliot is considered to be a fine
example of a metaphysical poet as he wrestles with noumenal experiences using extended
metaphor, as the Things of God s cannot be known in any other way (Dr Niamh C, 2012).
According to his biography, one of his famous poem The Waste Land, was written when he was
facing some hardships in his life; his marriage was falling and he was suffering of nervous
disorder. The physical and mental distress of the poet may provide an indication about the state of
mind in which The Waste Land was written, which seems to have greatly influenced the choice of
the title of the poem itself. The sub title The Burial of the Dead is equally troubling providing an
obscure and dark atmosphere about the poem. It seems like the titles chosen act as a foretaste of

The school can get over the difficulties it faces if certain guidelines and measures are followed. The
important solutions include; Communication and consultation. No institution can strive and be
productive without consultation. All business requires a platform whereby communication
amongst the people is involved. Regarding this university, parties involved includes the students,
tutors and other stockholders of the institution. If working platforms to enhance better
communication is put in place, low risks of tussles in the school will be reduced. Also since the
Dekan is concerned about the number of meetings held in the school every year, few meetings

mismanagement and wasting of university s funds which can be diverted to help settle other issues
of the university. However, If the capital assigned to the meetings are sufficient to hold up to four
or less meetings in a year, communication amongst the officials should be effective on which of the
meetings should be given high priorities or not. The distribution of funds should be vividly
deliberated, and the funding will be properly utilized. Research in the university is not to be

George began his professional career in quot;Tin Pan Alley, quot; a location in New York City

Two years after he started work for Jerome Remick, George had his first song published. quot; When

with a few more pieces for piano and orchestra as well as piano solo, including Concerto in F

Challenges Faced by Immigrants
The changing environments throughout the ages have caused the movement of thousands of
families out of their homelands. Whether forced to make such decisions or doing so by their own
desires, all immigrants have had to survive the physical and psychological challenges encountered
along the way. To speak about the experiences of all these different people using the same ideas
and examples would be quite inaccurate. They all, however, had to live through similar situations

everything I knew and everything I loved. The cool breeze of that autumn day rushed through

choice of turning back did not exist. As I was going up the stairs of the plane, I looked around at

The Character of Ophelia Essay
The Character of Ophelia
In Shakespeare s tragedies, the characters all have flaws that eventually lead to their undoing. In
the play Hamlet, the character of Ophelia is ultimately killed by her flaw.
It is apparent that Ophelia is an obedient person but, upon closer inspection, the audience can see
that she is not merely obedient. Ophelia s thoughts and actions go beyond obedience to show that
she is a weak and entirely dependent character. Nothing that she says or does is a representation of
herself but mostly that of her father. Ophelia s cruel actions towards Hamlet, which go against her
feelings for him, demonstrate her obedience to her father. In the beginning of the play, Ophelia tells
her father that she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ophelia s obedience and weakness as a character can be traced to her complete dependence on other
people. Her dependence on others is evident in the very beginning:
I do not know, my lord, what I should think. POL: Marry, I will teach you. Think yourself a
baby... (act 1, scene 3). This shows how Ophelia depends on her father to determine what she
should think and feel. Ophelia s complete dependence, or lack of independence, is what leads to
her demise. Still, Ophelia s dependence on others was not entirely her fault. It could have been
caused by her father and brother s protection over her. Polonius and Laertes were always there
for Ophelia, whether she needed it or not, causing her to develop a major character flaw. Her
flaw was her complete dependence on others, which can also be shown through her obedience
and overall weakness as a character. Ophelia s dependence on others is, sadly, what lead to her
death. She could not cope with the events in her life because she was so adapted to being told
how to think and act that she went mad. When she was forced to take care of herself, she could not
handle it and ended up committing suicide to keep from facing her problems

The Concept Of National Competitiveness
Introduction
The concept of national competitiveness has become a key issue to managers of firms and
understanding it has important ramification for policy makers as well. While most agree on the
idea of competitive firms, the notion of competitive nations is vague at best. Even with all the
debate, discussion, and research there is still no pervasive theory. In fact, there is not even an
accepted definition. Classical economic theorists dismiss the concept of competitiveness all together
and instead look to comparative advantage and the drivers of trade surplus to explain national
prosperity as a positive sum game. Harvard s Michael Porter approaches the subject from a
different view, asserting that defining competitiveness as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Article Review
In a unique study that addresses the debate directly, Thompson (2004) questioned if alterations in
relative business costs underpinned by currency change would affect national competitiveness
(strict economists view) more or less than institutional ( legal, governmental, public policy and other
factors) changes (the view of business/management scholars like Porter). To do so he studied a
specimen economy, Hong Kong which experienced a considerable decline between 1997 2002.
During this period the Hong Kong dollar appreciated and sweeping institutional changes occurred as
Hong Kong returned to China. At the same time, Hong Kong dropped from third place to seventh
place in the World Competitiveness Yearbook and from second to eighteenth place in the Global
Competitiveness Report. Cost competitiveness had nothing to do with these declines instead they
reflected significant changes by the governments of Hong Kong and China that were counter to the
institutional foundations of Hong Kong s past competitiveness. Thus Hong Kong presents a unique
opportunity to separate the contributions to national competitiveness of

Examples Of Alienation In The Thin Red Line
For instance in James Jones s novel The Thin Red Line (1962), the inhuman and brutal acts , such
as the disinterring of a Japanese corpse for fun, the extraction of their corpses gold teeth, and the
summary execution of Japanese prisoners, all of these explore the idea that each soldier suffers
the emotional and physical predicament of war by himself. However, some readers will be grateful
to an author who has honestly attempted to tell the truth in his own artistic way. One such person
was Romain Gary who expressed his appreciation of the novelin his April 22, 1962, letter to Jones.
The Thin Red Line, the line between man and beast, so easily crossed, is a realistic fable,
symbolic without symbols, mythological and yet completely factual, a sort of Moby Dick without
the white whale, deeply philosophical without any philosophizing whatsoever. . . . The book
belongs to that vein of poetical realism which is the rarest and to me the most precious thing in the
whole history of the novel , it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wright has exposed the human predicaments of his individualism through his characters with
their sufferings that they underwent due to their color, as well as he exposed the reality by
bringing out the hidden pain of the blacks. The effects of alienation in a society can be noted
through the novels of Wright such as, Black Boy and Native Son. In the novel Black Boy,
Richard Wright had a constant feeling of alienation. Richard expresses his physical or emotional
hunger, his disagreements with injustice, or his unwillingness to conform, he always felt this way.
Racism plays a strong role in Wright s Black Boy, due to the fact that this thought was very
popular in this time period. Richard struggled to liberate himself from the alienation of white
people and the working system because it was strongly looked down upon by whites and

Christopher Wren Research Paper
Christopher Wren can be called the largest phenomena of English architecture of the period of the
second half of 17th century and beginning of 18th century. His life is free from the rebellious
quest of the previous generation and to the brim is filled with often very bold, but sure and planned
development of what has been achieved in the field of exact sciences and then architecture. Fine
arts, literature and, in general, the humanities, apparently did not fascinate him. The son of the
abbot of Windsor Abbey and the nephew of the bishop, and hence the representative of the
privileged social stratum, with its settled way of life and influential connections, Christopher
received a brilliant education at that time and early surrendered to scientific interests, discovering,

In a Newton s opinion he was one of the three most outstanding mathematicians of his time. Wren
was a professor of astronomy at Oxford. He developed many inventions, including construction
mechanisms, and later became one of the founders and first presidents of the Royal Society created
in 1660. However, Wren went down in history, first of all, as the most outstanding architectof his
country. To the architecture of Wren turned relatively late, in the thirty third year of life, and then
after repeated insistence of influential customers. This in itself testifies to a new attitude to
architecture, perceived by that time as an activity requiring deep, diverse knowledge and a broad
outlook. And one of the turning point in his life, which led to appeal to architecture, was the Great
Fire of London in 1666. Wren creates a project for a radical redevelopment of the city, rejected,
however, by the reactionary authorities. At the same time, Wren received the order for the
construction his the most monumental structure of the St. Paul s Cathedral in London and
rebuilding burned churches, of which he built more than

The Muotte-Bailey Castle
Castles were the core of a society in the Middle Ages, acting as a fort and defense. One of the
first castles meant to as a defense fort was the motte bailey castle, one of the earliest fortifications
of the Middle Ages. The motte and bailey castle date back to the early s, . This design would have
the castleupon an elevated set of land known as the motte. The motte was surrounded by a
defensive ditch which also separated the motte from the palisade, this was known as the bailey. A
bridge connected the motte to the lower bailey, this construct was meant to guarantee that the keep,
the stronghold or center of the kingdom, was harder to get to during invasions. Surrounding the
entire kingdom was a wooden fence that contained a girded and barbed

Contributing Factors:
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2016), a strong positive correlation exists
between the number of adverse events in a child s life and the probability of negative outcomes as
they grow from adolescence into adulthood (cdc.gov). Adverse events in the life of the Native

The Secretary Chant, By Marge Piercy
What attitudes does each of the three authors have about the consequences of work? The authors
of the three texts all share a similar attitude towards the consequences of work, which is that it
can be detrimental to one s physical and mental wellbeing. Author of text One The Secretary
Chant, Marge Piercy describes the stressful life of a secretary and how the accumulation of
stressful events leads to the secretary feeling mechanical and dehumanised. Piercy implies that,
with overwork, people can begin to lose a sense of who they are. In this instance, the Secretary
believes she is no longer a human, but instead a part of the office as her voice has been lost in the
quantity of work that must be done. Similarly, Steven Poole, who wrote text... Show more content

This is further enhanced by the use of emotive language and a detached and melancholy tone.
The use of the verb, hang, and the noun, chains, acts as a possible allusion to other historical
events of oppression such as slavery. Such vocabulary choices emphasise the way in which the
secretary feels trapped and objectified in her own work environment. The secretary feels
trapped because of the way that she has been objectified, which suggests that she is only valued
for her ability to work like other office equipment, evident in line 1 where she states, my hips are
a desk. The mechanical way that the secretary is employed establishes how she no longer feels
as though she is a human. Instead, she is simply part of the office and the repetitive
onomatopoeic, buzz, and, clicks, that define workplace environments. This is supported by line
21, where the persona states, file me under W because I wonce was a woman. In a similar way,
text 2 considers the damaging effect of work through a satirical narrative voice. This is achieved
by exploring how humans are essentially slaves of the digital world. When humans go on
holiday; an event that epitomises quite the opposite of work, they are still plagued by, the fear
that catching up on a fortnight s email will be epically disgusting labour. Whilst the prospect of
reading one s emails is not the crux of the article, it acts as a humours anecdote that reminds
readers of the dangers of letting the digital world control them. The light hearted narrative voice of
the text is emphasised by the use of colloquial terms and inclusive language, such as, that first
volume of Karl Ove Knausgard you ve been meaning to read, as it appeals to the demographic of
The Guardian and encourages the

What Does Dido Mean In The Aeneid
The lengths people will go to in order to keep the person they love can be extreme. They may
poke a hole in a condom so their partner feels obligated to stay with a baby on the way or make
them feel guilty enough to stay. Virgil explores this idea in the Aeneid using Queen Dido. When
Aeneas is preparing to leave to fulfill his legacy, the Queen tries using anger, their marriage,
manipulation, and guilt tripping as means to keep him in Tyria by her side. In Didos first approach,
she is very irrational and angry. Her first words to him are You even hoped to keep me in the dark
as to this outrage, did you, two faced man, and slip away in silence? (Aeneid397 399) The Queen is
rash and uncaring with her words. Her words mean to keep him there to argue and argue until the
fight has left him and is willing to stay just to stop the fighting. As the argument drags on, she
grows furious and wishes that If divine justice counts for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though a good marriage is a perfectly reasonable to stay with somebody, Aeneasdoes not
know their relationship as a marriage. In response to her ramblings about their marriage , he says
I never held the torches of a bridegroom, never entered upon the pact of marriage. (Aeneid 443
444) To most people, this is a perfectly reasonable response but not in this situation. According to
Wall Street Insanity, Queen Dido is a crazy chick because She clings tightly to truths she s decided
on, even if there s no evidence to support them (Henderson) such as the marriage between her and
Aeneas. When dealing with someone who is slightly unstable like Queen Dido, it is best to not
anger them as Aeneas did with his careless words even though they are true. This method is tried
and untrue as her entire argument comes from something that is not recognized by both

  • 2. The Only Crime Is Pride Critical Lens Reflection Essay The quote Think: all men make mistakes, But a good man yields when he Knows his course is wrong, And repairs the evil: The only Crime is pride, said by Teiresias. (This excerpt is from Antigone, by the classical Greek playwright Sophocles.) This quote can mean several different things. It all depends on how you interpret it. I believe that Teiresias is explaining that a good man knows how to admit when he is wrong and tries to fix the problem that his mistake has caused. The only crime is pride. Teiresias is demonstrating the negative side of a man and what bad guys do instead. There is no crime in being wrong, however, when someone s pride is blinding them from admitting their wrongs , then that is when someone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are going to mess up. We were created to make mistakes so that way we could learn from them. It is our job to fix our miscalculations. Letting your pride keep you from telling the truth will result in a worse outcome than the original predicament. Teiresias makes it clear that it is alright to make mistakes, but trying to cover the mistakes up is not the right thing to do. Think about it, every time you choose to tell a lie you have to tell 1,000 more just to cover up the first lie. Wouldn t it just me easier to tell the truth? It takes a good man to confess his wrongs, those who can not always find themselves in bad predicaments all the time. Telling the truth is always the way to go. I use to have the hardest time confessing the things that I do incorrectly. It was hard for me to accept that I could mess up, but when I got older I started playing sports. Playing basketball and soccer you have to confess to the things you did/do wrong or otherwise you will not be able to improve as a player. Now I am the first to admit what I have done before my coaches even have the time to acknowledge what I did wrong. This makes the situation easier and makes my coaches job simpler as ... What would happen if you didn t drink coffee and changed this routine? How would you react? What would you do instead? What would you realize? Habits have this insurmountable power that can shape every aspect of our lives. From the way we dress, to what we eat, to how we communicate can all reflect back to comfort, personality, and routine with controlling aspects in our lives. We act this way because society believes it is acceptable or we dress this way to remain professional in the workplace. In communication, the main objective is to communicate without noise and loss of information. This paper emphasis the enhanced lossless compression and noise suppression in mobile phones and hearing aids. An effective technique is needed to transfer the audio signals with reduced bandwidth and storage space, without noise and loss of information in the signal during compression. Wavelet transformation method produces better lossless compression than other methods. The proposed method uses Haar wavelet and the algorithm used for lossless compression and noise reduction are: MLT PSPIHT ( Modulated Lapped Transform Perceptual Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees) and HANC (Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling) algorithm. Keywords: Audio lossless compression, noise suppression, Haar wavelet, MLT SPIHT algorithm, HANC algorithm. INTRODUCTION: Audio compression technique is increasingly becomes more significant in multimedia applications, since it produce extensively reduced bit rate than the original signal, the bandwidth , storage space and expense for the transmission of audio signal is also reduced correspondingly. • 6. She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb Essay Before taking this course, I always looked at films and read books just as the average person does; interesting plot and how long will it hold my interest, but this course gave me an entire different perspective when watching films and reading books. Now that I have taken this course and have watched the required films, the most important thing when watching other movies and reading books, is the meaning behind each scene and how they relate and affect our world. For this paper, I will discuss a book that I read a long time ago, which is She s Come Undone by Wally Lamb and how this book relates to this course. She s Come Undone is a story about a girl named Dolores Price. In this book, the author takes you through Dolores life, starting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this particular film Harold was very interested in death, and because of this he attempted many fake suicide attempts as a cry for help and attention. When Harold meets a woman named Maude, she teaches him many life lessons and the importance of living life to the fullest. In turn Harold opens up to her about his thoughts and feelings and the two of them become great friends. This film relates to She s Come Undone because just like Harold, Dolores battled her own issues and attempted suicide. Both of these characters meet people who help them understand that life is worth living no matter the struggles or hardships we face. With Harold, there was Maude and for Dolores, there was Dr. Shaw. Dr. Frost mentioned something in the notes that I believe helped both of these characters get through there hard times and that is: One of the most powerful and saving emotions is laughter. It helps keep us healthy both emotionally and physically. We can literally laugh our way out of illness! During the talks with Maude and the therapy sessions with Dr. Shaw, both Harold and Dolores were able to laugh through their troubles. As I mentioned before, I really enjoyed this course because it gave me a different perspective on what to look for when watching films and read books. My younger children carried and threw flower petals, or carried the rings, and other ceremonial portions of the service. More than anything, I was simply praying that my daughters would be serious enough not to pull any pranks during the service, or for one of them to catch fire during the service as one of the men of honor had done the night of dress rehearsals when he backed into a lit candle and his mullet ignited. These factors also form the marketing environment when we talk about it in a global context. These factors cannot be controlled, even though the marketers can influence these factors to some extent. Social environment can have a great deal of effect on marketing globally. By the social environment we mean the consumption trends of groups and individuals. The main factors that come under the category of social environment are demographic and cultural trends. These two factors mainly control the social environment for marketing. Economic environment consists of the relationship between the production of goods and their purchase in a particular set up. The economic environment also explains the consumption power of the customers. The market activities are also influenced by the political and legal environment. This implies that the market will suffer if there any potential threats and it will grow if the conditions are peaceful. Moreover the laws and regulations of a particular country also constraint the activities of the marketers; however most of the marketers are able to identify the opportunities that result from the regulations and political trends (Vitullo Martin, 1997). These texts were highly regarded by ancient Egyptians, as some of their greatest writers wrote instruction literature. Most of these texts were also administrative, and therefore intended to be read by a large audience. The contents of these texts included themes of personal morality, personal behavior, social norms, strategic behavior, and general advice about life. The introduction of the instructions clarifies why Ptahhotep thought it was necessary to write instructions for the people, for no one is born wise (Simpson, 131). Following a narration, Ptahhotep begins by addressing his son. Among the first instructions, silence and moderation are seen as important aspects of Ma at, or the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, and honor. Ptahhotep then discusses how to deal with nobility as well as the proper treatment of a son, a wife, relatives, and friends. The instructions conclude with discussion of more political aspects of ancient Egyptian life, including how to deal with noblemen and how to act as a nobleman, which Ptahhotep was likely concerned with since he was an official. One statement of note is Ptahhotep s advice that one should Follow [their] heart as long as [they] live (Simpson, 135). Disadvantages Of Technology And Media Impacts of Technology and Media Baym (2015), Murthy (2013), and Andrejevic (2013) together demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages that technology and media have on today s society. These three authors provide multiple thoughts that relate to each other, but also have different outlooks on many other points. Social mediaallows the immediate spread of information. While Twitter has negative effects on humans, some research shows that there it is possible to have positive outcomes as well. Murthy (2013) focuses on how Twitter has helped shape communication in today s world. Unlike most social media sites, Twitter uses a 140 character count to ensure messages are concise. Translating complex thoughts into just one hundred or so words can be challenging for most, but the message will turn out just as powerful, if not more. Baym (2015) stated that new technologycould have a positive impact on families In the context of contemporary digital media, the hope remains that new communication technologies will bring families and loved ones together (p. 41). For example, if a child had something to say to their parents that was very important, they might feel more comfortable doing it through technology. People find it easier to text or post something rather than saying it face to face because it gives people more time to choose the perfect wording. Once a person say something verbally, there is no delete key to take back the words that were said. New forms of technology and media are being used without forethought, which is causing mania, panic, and misinformation. Baym (2013) proposes different theories to support the various consequences of machines. Technological determinism being one of her perspectives, argues that machines change humans (Baym, 2015, p. 27). An example of machines altering humans would be the constant desire to have the newest technological device. Not only is it a negative aspect to be controlled by machines, but it can also be detrimental to the human character to believe that in order to function properly one must have the most advanced machine by their side. There is no agreed definition of existentialism, as those who are considered as existentialist do not share the same exact thought on the subject though the starting point may be fairly linked. Ophelia s thoughts and actions go beyond obedience to show that she is a weak and entirely dependent character. This shows how Ophelia depends on her father to determine what she should think and feel. Ophelia s complete dependence, or lack of independence, is what leads to her demise. Still, Ophelia s dependence on others was not entirely her fault. It could have been caused by her father and brother s protection over her. In contrast, he ignores the contribution of the masses as he sees them as largely irrational, passive and anarchic in their demands and actions. From Pipes view the Revolution was lead by the superior organisation and subterfuge of the masses by an elite whose goal was to seize power. Post revolutionary events proved to be undemocratic, authoritarian and intolerant nature of the October revolutionaries developing the totalitarian tendencies: Bolsheviks were the only legal party, a one ideology state which had control over every aspect of its population. In Pipes eyes, the Revolution was a totalitarian coup meaning that the main aspects of autocracy were carried on, therefore, Stalinism was a continuation of the Russian autocracy and the Revolution did not bring many significant ... Examples Of Alienation In The Thin Red Line For instance in James Jones s novel The Thin Red Line (1962), the inhuman and brutal acts , such as the disinterring of a Japanese corpse for fun, the extraction of their corpses gold teeth, and the summary execution of Japanese prisoners, all of these explore the idea that each soldier suffers the emotional and physical predicament of war by himself. However, some readers will be grateful to an author who has honestly attempted to tell the truth in his own artistic way. One such person was Romain Gary who expressed his appreciation of the novelin his April 22, 1962, letter to Jones. The Thin Red Line, the line between man and beast, so easily crossed, is a realistic fable, symbolic without symbols, mythological and yet completely factual, a sort of Moby Dick without the white whale, deeply philosophical without any philosophizing whatsoever. . . . The book belongs to that vein of poetical realism which is the rarest and to me the most precious thing in the whole history of the novel , it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His life is free from the rebellious quest of the previous generation and to the brim is filled with often very bold, but sure and planned development of what has been achieved in the field of exact sciences and then architecture. Fine arts, literature and, in general, the humanities, apparently did not fascinate him. The son of the abbot of Windsor Abbey and the nephew of the bishop, and hence the representative of the privileged social stratum, with its settled way of life and influential connections, Christopher received a brilliant education at that time and early surrendered to scientific interests, discovering, like many... However, Wren went down in history, first of all, as the most outstanding architectof his country. To the architecture of Wren turned relatively late, in the thirty third year of life, and then after repeated insistence of influential customers. This in itself testifies to a new attitude to architecture, perceived by that time as an activity requiring deep, diverse knowledge and a broad outlook. And one of the turning point in his life, which led to appeal to architecture, was the Great Fire of London in 1666. Wren creates a project for a radical redevelopment of the city, rejected, however, by the reactionary authorities. At the same time, Wren received the order for the construction his the most monumental structure of the St. Paul s Cathedral in London and rebuilding burned churches, of which he built more than ... • 46. The Secretary Chant, By Marge Piercy What attitudes does each of the three authors have about the consequences of work? The authors of the three texts all share a similar attitude towards the consequences of work, which is that it can be detrimental to one s physical and mental wellbeing. Author of text One The Secretary Chant, Marge Piercy describes the stressful life of a secretary and how the accumulation of stressful events leads to the secretary feeling mechanical and dehumanised. Piercy implies that, with overwork, people can begin to lose a sense of who they are. In this instance, the Secretary believes she is no longer a human, but instead a part of the office as her voice has been lost in the quantity of work that must be done. Similarly, Steven Poole, who wrote text... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is further enhanced by the use of emotive language and a detached and melancholy tone. The use of the verb, hang, and the noun, chains, acts as a possible allusion to other historical events of oppression such as slavery. Such vocabulary choices emphasise the way in which the secretary feels trapped and objectified in her own work environment. The secretary feels trapped because of the way that she has been objectified, which suggests that she is only valued for her ability to work like other office equipment, evident in line 1 where she states, my hips are a desk. The mechanical way that the secretary is employed establishes how she no longer feels as though she is a human. Instead, she is simply part of the office and the repetitive onomatopoeic, buzz, and, clicks, that define workplace environments. This is supported by line 21, where the persona states, file me under W because I wonce was a woman. In a similar way, text 2 considers the damaging effect of work through a satirical narrative voice. This is achieved by exploring how humans are essentially slaves of the digital world. When humans go on holiday; an event that epitomises quite the opposite of work, they are still plagued by, the fear that catching up on a fortnight s email will be epically disgusting labour. Whilst the prospect of reading one s emails is not the crux of the article, it acts as a humours anecdote that reminds readers of the dangers of letting the digital world control them. The light hearted narrative voice of the text is emphasised by the use of colloquial terms and inclusive language, such as, that first volume of Karl Ove Knausgard you ve been meaning to read, as it appeals to the demographic of The Guardian and encourages the ... They may poke a hole in a condom so their partner feels obligated to stay with a baby on the way or make them feel guilty enough to stay. Virgil explores this idea in the Aeneid using Queen Dido. When Aeneas is preparing to leave to fulfill his legacy, the Queen tries using anger, their marriage, manipulation, and guilt tripping as means to keep him in Tyria by her side. In Didos first approach, she is very irrational and angry. Her first words to him are You even hoped to keep me in the dark as to this outrage, did you, two faced man, and slip away in silence? (Aeneid397 399) The Queen is rash and uncaring with her words. Her words mean to keep him there to argue and argue until the fight has left him and is willing to stay just to stop the fighting. According to Wall Street Insanity, Queen Dido is a crazy chick because She clings tightly to truths she s decided on, even if there s no evidence to support them (Henderson) such as the marriage between her and Aeneas. When dealing with someone who is slightly unstable like Queen Dido, it is best to not anger them as Aeneas did with his careless words even though they are true. This method is tried and untrue as her entire argument comes from something that is not recognized by both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
