Civil War Spies
Male and female spies were essential sources of information during the Civil War. The best spies were
people you would never suspect. Spies were brave, faceless and they knew the environment very well.
Their presence was incredibly excepted. Whether they dressed as men and joined the army, posed as
mindless slaves, or just kept their ears opens in collective circles, spies provided necessary
information. It was even a woman spy who provided Union battle plans to Confederate Army, which
allowed them to win the First Battle of Manassass (First Bull Run). Throughout history, men have
been spies and the American Civil War was no exception. The finest spies are people you would never

There he shared the information that he had gathered on his journey. It is not known why he was such
a great spy but he was knoown as a sneaky man. On August 15, 1862, he was arrested, taken to
Richmond for trial, and sentenced to hang. He was arrested after sinking the ferry supplying Fort
Hudson, Georgia. On September 25, 1863 Spencer Kellogg Brown was hanged. Spencer once said
before his dreadful death, Did you ever pass through a tunnel under a mountain? My passage, my
death is dark, but beyond all is light and bright.
George Curtis, another first rate spy, was living in New York at the beginning of the Civil War, and he
joined a New York Infantry Regiment. He then became a Pinkerton agent, and a tremendous spy. He
was selected in 1862 to obtain information from Richmond. He made his way to the Confederate
capital as a contraband merchant selling gun caps, ammunition, and the much needed quinine. The day
after reaching Virginia he was taken to the Confederate lines and to an audience with Lt. General
Ambrose Powell Hill. General Hill gave him a pass to go on to Richmond and also asked Curtis if he
would carry some dispatches as well. Curtis gladly agreed to carry out his chore. When Curtis reached
Richmond he was introduced to Confederate Secretary of War Judah Benjamin where he negotiated
for the delivery of his contraband goods and received a pass to move in and out of Richmond freely.

Amelia Earhart Contributions
Over 100 years ago, when humanity looked for new places to conquer, two men looked to the skies.
Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first working motor airplane, and after that day, the world took a
huge interest in aviation, causing many leading pioneers and innovators in the aerospace field to
emerge, revolutionizing the way we look at the skies. Amelia Earhart was one of the first pilots to
revolutionize the skies, and what made her particularly iconic was the fact that she was one of the first
woman to fly. She discovered her love for flight after watching the Royal Flying Corps train in
Toronto, Canada whilst she served as a Red Cross nurse in WWI. She then had her first airplane ride
in December 1920 in California with WWI pilot Frank Hawks. After this confirmation of her love for
aviation, she began lessons with instructor Neta Snook, another early woman pilot. Amelia did all she
could (taking odd jobs) in order to pay for her lessons and then her first airplane: a Kinner Airster. She
passed her flight test and got her license in December 1921, and afterwards she set out to define
herself as a pioneer in the field of aviation, becoming the first woman to fly solo 14,000 feet above sea
level. Her biggest accomplishment was flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean, as she was the first
woman to do so. She continued to fly for many years, but then on a flight outside of the United States,
both she and her plane were lost near the Bermuda Triangle, and no wreckage was

Lightbo Lightbox Meaning
The title is a metaphor for apartments in the modern society, which have colossal windows that change
the way privacy is interpreted. The narrator, unnamed, describes lightboxes metaphorically [...] high
rise boxes [...] , [...] boxes of light [...] and [...] individual lightboxes [...] . In that sense, the title can be
associated with the modern way of living, living in modern apartments with colossal windows,
overusing computers and smartphone that all provide light, just like a lightbox. The indication is that
everyone can find a lot of information about other people, because people in the modern society have
a tendency to share every little detail about their life to the rest of the world, either by living in modern
apartments with large windows that project their lives to the rest of the world, or by sharing every
information over social media to the rest of the world. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The connection between an apartment and a box is also symbolic, that symbolises people in the
modern society, who construct their own identity in various boxes such as Facebook profiles, blogs,

are transparent and easily accessible. The narrator can snoop on Elsie because she has a very public
life with her online profile and blog, as well as colossal windows. For the narrator, being able to see
into Elsie s life makes it seem like they have a relationship when in reality they are total

The Demolition of Privacy Rights
The Demolition of Privacy Rights Civil liberties is a term coined by the United States that guarantees
certain rights to the people by the Bill of Rights. Although the Right to Privacy is not officially
enumerated into the Constitution, the Supreme Court ruled that citizens do in fact, have the right to
their own privacy in their own home and their own beliefs. Privacy rights are an essential part of
everyday American lives, in that everyone should be given the right to do whatever they want to do in
privacy without anyone judging them or knowing what they have done. The right to privacy can also
be considered jeopardizing to society because if someone is doing everything privately, including
planning some sort of abomination or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As stated above, privacy rights are considered an essential part of one s everyday life because
everyone has their own definition of privacy, in other words, everyone has to have their own form of
privacy; Google defined privacy as the state or condition of being free from being observed or
disturbed by other people but to some people privacy is what one does by themselves or what they do
with another person(s). According to the Patriot Act, the Government has the right to implement all
types of instruments that will further protect the country from terrorism by imposing extreme actions
that target certain rights, such as privacy. In today s society, teenagers and all people around the world
is constantly on their phone either updating a status on Facebook or posting a new picture on
Instagram, this could be very detrimental in protecting one s own private life; photos and status
updates may uncontrollably reveal one s personal life, such as a school s location or even a house
address. Essentially giving the criminal a treasure map. Furthermore the government should enact a
law that gives some type of privacy right while the right of privacy is a debatable subject, citizens
should not fear their government from taking away their right or abuse it for the good will of the
people. While Privacy Rights is considered a necessity for everyday life, the

Fallacies Of The New York Times Website
It would be difficult to find any two individuals on the planet who are able to agree on everything.
Because of this, there are many different issues in which any two people are going to fail to see eye to
eye on. Differing viewpoints lead to arguments that are created by people in order to argue their
points. While some arguments that are created are based in fact, some arguments are based upon false
assumptions and trickery, with these unsound arguments being known as fallacies. A study of fallacies
reveal the true nature of false arguments, and better equips an individual to identify invalid arguments.
Argument with Fallacies The Ebola virus is in danger of spreading rapidly in the United States. A
report on the New York Times website, written by Kevin Sack, has revealed the fact that Ebola has
spread from person to person at a Texas hospital. In order to protect the citizens of the United States, a
prompt and quick lock down of the entire state of Texas in needed and necessary in order to protect
the United States. Since Ebola has officially been confirmed to have spread from one person to
another in Texas, it can be assumed that the conditions exist in Texas that allow the spread of the virus
to occur. There must be something particular to Texas that allows the virus to gain strength, and jump
from person to person. It can only be assumed that the unique environment in Texas is one where
Ebola has the ability to survive and thrive. If it is not the environment in

The Legacy Of Abraham Cahan
Jews have been lashed out on, time and time again throughout history, but one man who saw this
hatred for Jews first hand and tried turning the tables, was a man by the name of Abraham Cahan. He
is known as being the first prominent writer to emerge from the biggest wave of Jewish immigration
from Russia, but he was much more than just a writer. He was an editor and critic of several New York
newspapers, a sociologists reformer, and a teacher of English to many Jewish immigrants following in
his footsteps. Cahan valued his Jewish religion, but not only that, he valued language and in particular
English and Yiddish which he wrote in. He believed in telling the story of immigration through fiction
which he did in his literature, by taking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is just one battle in a continuous war against maintaining his religion, but he had a changing
world around him tearing him apart from it. In this constant war, he ends up having to flee Europe in
particular Russia, because he gets tangled in a mess involving an assassination attempt of the Czar.
This journey leads him to America, where he is first greeted by the Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island.
When Cahan came to America many things changed for him, he was forced to leave behind his old life
and try his hardest to assimilate himself into American culture. He left behind many aspects of his
culture, but was still able to continue on with many of them. One piece of his life that was hardest to
maintain was his language. Although he held onto Yiddish, Russian, and Hebrew, he immediately had
to learn English which soon became a large part of his career and what made him so astounding.
America is said to be the home of the free, and this is what so many immigrants desired when coming
to America, and Cahan was no exception. He was a tremendous aid to those immigrants by devoting
the first years of his life in America to teaching English. While doing this, he also lectured and wrote
articles on Jewish life in the city for countless New York magazines. Within these articles he answers
many questions on tough arguments, mostly circled around religion. An example of one

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Eclectic Theory
Abstract This article is a short overview of the Eclectic theory or ideology of teaching English. A
discovery of where the origins of the philosophy were born, and why it evolved and stayed alive in
many fields of study to this day.. While many old school linguists see it as un principled and vague
without any structure, is does have strong concepts and principles about language acquisition and
learning environments, choices of activities and reasons for these varieties, A look at what prominent
linguists say about the advantages and the disadvantages of this theory.

Over the last hundred years or more, numerous second language methods and ... Show more content

Then there are standards of achievement which make it inconceivable that any single method could
achieve optimum success in all learning environments. Alan Maley (1983) said: Teachers need to offer
a variety of activities, techniques, and tasks in teaching to give equal opportunities to students with
different styles of learning so all students progress. Girard, (1972) said: Rather than fish in one
linguistic stream, we should cast our pedagogical net in all waters that might bring us in a profitable
catch (Dillon, J. M., and A. A. Long, 2004). It is a whole integrated approach, for example, a listening
activity with coordinated speaking or singing and supplementary features like pronunciation and form
of the language. In this regard Canale and Swain rightly said about the four dimensions of
communicative competence, grammar competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse
competence, and strategic competence (Richard, 1986, p.71). It is hard to sum up Eclectic theory in a
few sentences. It is not a scientific drill or methodology nor it a teaching tool or a learning method for
the learners. The causes for change in language teaching, and in new language teaching methods, lie,
in this view, in the main with social, political or philosophical factors (Pennycook, A.1989). Critical
pedagogy is, wary of progressivism concepts characteristic in second language teaching. With the
inception of applied linguistics, along with the concept of a scientific kind of language teaching
philosophies changed. This was seen prominently in the audio lingual methodology. Proponents of the
audio lingual method (ALM) thought that they could validate their teaching techniques by claiming
that the method was based on scientific

Basques Social Structure
The Basques are people who inhabit a region spanning over parts of north central Spain and
southwestern France. Some people are still confused as to where they have originated from. Basques
are now mainly found in an area traditionally known as Euskal Herria, which is located around the
western end of the Pyrenees on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. The Basques language is also called the
Euskera. The Basque language is an extremely complex language which has no close relatives
anywhere else in the world. I will be discussing the Basques infrastructure, social structure, and
superstructure how they maintained it all. The Basques infrastructure is not an industrial hub, but they
do maintain a unique regional identity. They can use an update with their infrastructure. Houses in the
city Bilbao houses many heavy industries, such as steel plants and shipbuildings facilities. They do not

How Did We Revolutionize Canada
Nothing could have better complimented the end of WW1 than the 1920s, also known as the roaring
twenties. This era is most notable for its help in revolutionizing Canada into a new modern age and
help shape Canada into what it is today. This was a time of many new remarkable inventions like the
automobile, the radio, and the telephone which all had advanced and change how we live today. This
era was also when Canada took the necessary steps in achieving greater autonomy from Britain.
Canadians believed that Canada should no longer be controlled by a European power, so in the
decades after war, Canada took steps toward independence. Canada joined the League of Nations in
1919. This was one of the first times canada took independent action in cooperation with a ... Show

The Rebirth Of A Forgotten Virtue By Daniel Akst
In the pugnacious article Thrift: The Rebirth of a Forgotten Virtue, the writer Daniel Akst uncovers the
characterization and slant of the utilization of thrift. Throughout the article, Akst gives a few
perspectives and cases of certain powerful individuals and their perspectives. Alongside the different
perspectives of the individuals, there are numerous quotes from well respected people. When Akst
uncovers his actual position on thrift towards the closure of his factious article, he trusts that thrift
makes solidness. The targeted group that Akst aims for is the general population of money spenders in
America. His intention of composing this article is to advise individuals about thrift and that by
thrifting you make budgetary opportunity. The rhetorical analysis strategies that will be exemplified
are pathos, as well as logos. Daniel Akst is successful in his contention that thrift makes opportunity
with illustrations of hurried speculations, quotes of persuasive individuals and measurable proof. The
strategy used by Akst as a part of his factious article is pathos, which is used to helped persuade his
audience through his use of logical reasoning. The use of pathos throughout the article shows faith in
how Americans burns through cash and how they ought to burn through cash. To the extent that thrift
produces wealth, it breeds envy (511). Akst is claiming that riches breeds or creates envy in everybody
naturally. Akst does not bolster his claim that riches makes

The Girl with The Silver Eyes
Hard boiled detective fiction sets the scene for a cold and harsh reality. Dashiell Hammett s, The Girl
with The Silver Eyes is no exception to this rule. In this short story Hammett paints a picture of a
brutally realistic urban center filled with characters that not many people would want to call friends.
The realistic qualities of Hammett s story are drawn from his own life s experience working as a
Pinkerton detective. The detective in The Girl With The Silver Eyes works for the Continental
Detective Agency and is, therefore, known simply as the Continental Op. In the beginning of the story
the Op professes, a detective, if he is wise, takes pains to make and keep as many friends as possible

observation of the situation, largely discouraging the small details that people want to include. The Op

involves student centered activities focusing on questioning, exploring, and posing explanations. The
goal of inquiry is to introduce a new way of learning where students can learn about the world around

The Public Enemy By William Wellman
The Public Enemy by William Wellman (1931) is a renowned gangster film that paved the way for an
emerging genre whilst maximizing the use of sound technology of which the effects were still
reverberating around Hollywood in the 1930 s to amplify and exaggerate the narrative as well as other
elements such as mise en scene but also to assault audience with a new experience. The emergence of
an all talking gangster film that capitalized upon and left a lasting impression on the audience and on
society as it commented on social and economic issues that surrounded the American people such as
race and social status. However, at the time when The Public Enemy was released in 1931, Hollywood
was beginning to feel the effects of the Wall Street Crash, which meant that they began producing
films that their audience wanted to see and that we re affordable which lead to the rise of the gangster
genre, which flourished for the next few years. Ruth Vasey s assessment of The Public Enemy is
incredibly insightful into how sound impacted the film and its audience but also how sound was used
in correlation with the other elements of the film to create its visceral impact on the audience.
However with the introduction of sound, more obstacles we re discovered such as the issue of
censorship as it had a perceived capacity to undermine middle class vales .

Runway Description Of Runway Lighting
Runway lighting. Runway lighting is composed of several different types of lighting, with specific
colors and positions on the runway, conveying vital information to the pilot during night operations, or
operations during low visibility. Some airports will have Runway End Identifier Lights, which provide
positive identification of the approach end of the runway. These lights are located on each side of the
runway threshold, consist of a pair of synchronized flashing lights, and may be unidirectional facing
the approach area or omnidirectional. Runway Edge Lights are white lights used to mark the edges of
the runway. Used for night or low visibility operations, these lights are classified as high, medium, or
low intensity lights. On instrument runways, amber lights are used on the last half of the runway, or
2,000 feet, whichever is less, with red lights marking the end of the runway. Touchdown Zone Lights
are flush lights that consist of two rows of lights on either side of the runway center line that designate
the desired touchdown area of the runway. Runway Centerline Lights consist of a single row of white
lights, beginning 75 feet from the landing threshold, spaced at 50 foot intervals, and run the length of
the centerline of the runway. Taxiway Turnoff Lights are installed on some precision runways, they
consist of flush lights which emit a steady green color, and designate where taxiways intersect the

Comback of Steroids in Sport
By the end of the 21st century steroids will be permitted in every professional sport. Professional
sports can put as many limitations on what athletes can take but it will never be enough. Many athletes
will have enough money to overcome these limitations. They may still get caught with the drugs but
they have enough money to control the media so people won t see what they did. There is only one
way to level the playing field. The only way is to make steroids legal in professional sports. In the
article, Why it s Time to Legalize Steroids in Professional Sports by Chris Smith, he says, Not only
would the playing field suddenly be even for all players, it would be at a higher level. I think that this
is exactly true. Legalizing steroids would make the sports more entertaining. Athletes in the sport will
be able to play at a higher level. Chris Smith also said, It also makes sense for professional sports to
allow steroids from a business standpoint. People will pay more money to watch the upper level
athletes perform. If steroids were legal it would make drug stores more money because more people
would be buying steroids. Not only will the legalization of steroids benefit the sport, it will benefit
other businesses as well. Athletes will have a choice of if they want to do steroids or not. There are
many side effects of using steroids. One of the side effects is that the body will stop producing natural
testosterone. The next side effect is that steroids cause

The Fight For Freedom By Harriet Jacobs

The Fight for Freedom
Harriet Jacobs, in her narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, was born into slavery in the
south. While her youth contained six years of happy childhood, a few tragedies and mistresses later,
Jacobs spent many years in pain under the possession of her cruel five year old mistress, Emily Flint,
and Emily s father, Dr. Flint. Once able to obtain freedom, Jacobs spent most of her life working for
the Anti Slavery office in New York, in hope that one day she could make a difference in the world.
She sought to win the respect and admiration of her readers for the courage with which she forestalled
abuse and for the independence with which she chose a lover rather than having one forced on her
(Jacobs 921). Linda Brett, the pseudonym that Jacobs uses to narrate her life story, endures the harsh
behavior women slaves were treated with in the south during the nineteenth century. The dominant
theme of the corruptive power and psychological abuse of slavery, along with symbolism of good and
evil, is demonstrated throughout her narrative to create a story that exposes the terrible captivity
woman slaves suffered. The reality of slavery in the past, versus slavery today is used to reveal how
the world has changed and grown in the idea of racism and neglect.
Slavery has existed for thousands of years throughout America. Though slavery in men is what is
revealed in most books, women slaves

Who Was Responsible For The Triangle Fire
The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire happened on March 25, 1911. The Triangle Fire is remembered as one of
the most tragic workplace incidents in the history of Industrial America. This tragic fire killed 146
female factory workers, some as young as age 15. During this time there was many problems with
sweatshops and unsafe working conditions, this fire proved those problems to be true. The Triangle
Shirtwaist Company was owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris. The company was started by Blanck
and Harris in 1900. Their company occupied the top three floors (8,9,10) of the Asch Building in
Manhattan. Each floor of their company had hundreds of girls at sewing machines, the floors were
very overcrowded. Many of the girls that worked at this company were ... Show more content on

The building had four elevators to reach the factory floors, however, in 1911 only one of those four
elevators were functional, workers also had to file down a long narrow hallway to reach it. In addition
to those elevators there were two stairways down. One of those stairways was unlocked. The other
stairway down was locked from the outside. The building also had a fire escape, but it was very
narrow and couldn t get that many people down it fast enough. With what happened on the Triangle
Fire of 1911, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris should be blamed for the tragic aftermath and so many
women dead with the fire. Their punishment for 146 females dying was very inadequate. Seeming
how they did not take the proper safety precautions and their factory was not up to city codes. Blanck
and Harris did not get charged of manslaughter or anything for the 146 females dying in this fire,
though they definitely should have. There had been strikes in years before about better working
conditions and more safe precautions in the factory. One reporter that was an eyewitness to the fire
said, I remembered their great strike of last year, in which these girls demanded more sanitary
workrooms, and more safety precautions in the shops. These dead bodies told the results. 1 The
workers wanted safer conditions the year before, so much so that they went on strike. Nothing
changed through this strike and the worst thing happened, the unsafe conditions killed 146

The Diet, The South Beach Diet
Introduction: We live in a society that is crazed in following latest diets whether it be the
Mediterranean diet, the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet etc. Each day there are new discoveries
displayed throughout the media regarding diets and lifestyles, yet for a society so obsessed in the
healthiest trend our statistics tend to show the flying numbers at which the population is diagnosed
with chronic diseases related to nutritional factors. Thus a sound nutrition is more essential than ever.
In the United States at least 4 of the 10 leading causes of are directly linked to what we eat. Majority if
not all of the chronic diseases have a nutritional/lifestyle component that if caught in time can be
reversed. Therefore the focus of the meal plan project was to gain an understanding of one s own
personal nutritional intake by measuring calories consumed throughout the course of one week. In
doing so the individual is made aware of any nutritional deficiencies or food excesses by the choices
made when selecting food. The individual is able to fully grasp their individual needs by analyzing the
data collected over their consumption of essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, water and
proteins. In the midst of attending class, work and club schedules, as well as inadequate sleep I
hypothesize that my overall nutrition will look be a downward spiral with insufficient calories and
deficiencies in minerals.

The Importance Of Physical Similarity
An old saying states that birds of a feather flock together. It can be quite comforting to meet someone
who is similar to yourself. Like minded individuals not only validate our beliefs about the world, but
also reduce the risk of conflicts and disagreements (Barelds Barelds Dijkstra, 2007, p. 479). In fact,
research has shown that people are more likely to be in relationships with others who are similar to
themselves in terms of attitudes, values, social group memberships, and physical appearances than
with dissimilar others (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Physical Similarity A study
conducted by Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson (2011) examined how seating preferences are affected by
physical similarity in strangers. The researchers proposed that people would sit closer to physically
similar others even when those physical similarities are unrelated to important markers of social
status, such as sex and race. The study states that without the opportunity to interact facilitated by
physical proximity, a relationship is less likely to form (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879).
Across 4 studies, it was found that people tend to sit closer to physically similar others than physically
dissimilar others. Study 1 revealed significant aggregation in seating patterns on two easily observed
characteristics: glasses wearing and sex. Seating arrangements at a Canadian university on campus
computer lab with 31 seats was observed on 21 (non overlapping) occasions over 3 months. Using a
seating diagram, the researcher recorded whether a person occupied each seat. In total, 356 individuals
were observed; 23% were wearing glasses (N = 82) and 57.6% were women (N = 205). This shows
that, as predicted, glasses wearers sat by other glasses wearers (and non glasses wearers by other non
glasses wearers) more frequently than expected by chance alone. Study 2 replicated this finding with a
wider variety of physical traits: race, sex, glasses wearing, hair length, and hair color. In the second
study, 18 university classes (freshman and sophomore level) were observed. Three large classrooms at
a Canadian university were chosen, and professors who taught courses in those classrooms were
emailed for permission to

The Frontier Of American History
In the Significance of the Frontier in American History, Frederick Jackson Turner discusses the
understanding of the West as a concept. Turner s claims included that the expansion into the frontier
fueled individualism, stimulated democracy and nationalism, and widened the opportunity of
advancement. In the census of 1890, the frontier no longer had a place in the report because the
previously unsettled areas had been broken into areas of settlement. Turner uses the definition of two
people per square mile of land as the frontier s official closing, and no longer a point of historical
relevance. In the essay, Turner points out the differences in America s expansion with other nations.
Other nations developed in a confined area, then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem developed from excess credit of one of the field s founders, Frederick Jackson Turner.
Although Turner s writings left out large groups of people, many Americans viewed Turner s thesis as
Western history. When Turner s ideas began to be criticized, that something had gone wrong in
Western history, not Turner s thesis. The view of Western history slowly began to change. Turner
recognized the national significance of the frontier, so abandoning him would threaten the place of the
West in American history (Limerick). In 1984, American historian Patricia Limerick attended a history
conference. All of the focus of the history of America was on the revolutionary war in the East. This
inspired her to write Legacy of Conquest. Limerick wanted to reclaim what other historians have said,
critique Turner, but not throw the idea of the west away. Her thesis argues the West as a place of
property and cultural dominance. Limerick defines the West as a place of conquest and diversity.
Limerick stresses the West as a place rather than a process, but didn t draw exact borders of the region.
Limerick deemphasizes the end of the frontier; she argues that the West was an important meeting
ground for a diversity of languages, cultures, and religions, including minorities Turner left out. This
blending of diversity in the West is an

Duality Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886, is a very peculiar
thriller which tells the story of a lawyer from London, named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates
a series of strange occurrences between one of his old friends, Dr. Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward
Hyde.
Robert Louis Stevenson believed that every human in this world have both good and evil within, and
therefore he decided to write a book that shows this duality of mankind in the form of an allegorical
story. However, the duality of mankind isn t the only important theme in this book since Stevenson
also wanted to criticize the Victorian Era, especially the city of London during the Victorian Era.

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Since Stevenson believed that everyone has good and evil within, he makes a
great deal of exaggerating both the evil and the good part of every human. The most obvious
indication of this is that Dr. Jekyll always enjoyed doing evil things, even though his consciousness
was troubling him whenever he did these evil acts, which lead to Dr. Jekyll separating the good and
bad parts of him and thus creating Mr. Hyde. In doing so, he showed how every person is affected by
two personalities which balance each other out, kind of like Yin and Yang. When he separated these to
personalities, there was nothing to keep his bad side in check and therefore it ran loose without

The Pros And Cons Of Free Community College
Perhaps one of the greatest concerns that torments America s new generation is pursuing higher
education in order to make more money and while avoiding being in debt, decades after graduation.
This topic has become even more as tuition continues to rise and politicians are left to ponder the best
course of action to insure that the next generation of Americans is more educated than the last. One
particular solution was posed by former president, Barack Obama, who promoted the idea of free
community college. Although, it may not be the most direct or most elegant solution, it would
certainly be a push in the right direction. By making community college tuition free nationwide, states
would become more invested in accommodating the influx of students, lead different school systems
to compete by lowering tuition prices, and finally address America s shortcoming in adults who
possess more than just high school diploma. Since free tuition would lead to overcrowding in schools,
more schools would have to be built to compensate a blessing in disguise. Here, in our lovely state of
California, more prisons have been built within the last couple of decades than universities. Thus, the
state would become pressured into finally making up for lost time and start chipping away at the
deficit our state has accrued. In an article by US News World Report regarding Obama s free
community college idea, it was stated , If more middle class students choose community college, it
could create an environment where states step up on funding. Moreover, the article continued to state
the following: With a more diverse group of students, community colleges could gain political capital
and funding that goes with it. Subsequently, education (that is financially feasible for this at or below
the poverty line) is essentially a ticket out of poverty, a chance to move forward and embody the
American dream. Ergo, (using California as part of this hypothetical scenario) by opening free
community colleges, more students are encouraged to attend, therefore more schools need to be built,
and lastly, once the schools are built more people will strive for a better life one devoid of being
uneducated and at a higher risk for criminality. The

Give Me Liberty By Eric Foner Summary
In this excerpt from Eric Foner s Give Me Liberty!, he discusses the significance of religion in the
lives of Native Americans, as well as the social relations of Native Americans and the freedom and
liberty they attempted to acquire. As mentioned in the previous discussion, certain tribes in North
America were diverse. Although, they shared a common ideal and that was religion. Despite what
most of us may think, their religion was not quite different to those of Europeans. Moreover, owning
property was also something Native Americans believe as being a common resource, not an economic
commodity, whereas in the United States, the only people that owned land and property were white
males. Like every society, social status played a major role in determining one s reputation. For
instance, kindness and trade were valued tremendously. In addition, the Native Americans valued
attributes like generosity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women s lives were different compared to other countries because women were open to do such tasks,
premarital sex, marriage, and divorce. Men, on the other hand, contributed in communities by hunting
and played a sort of role model of what a successful leader is like. Society wasn t really a patriarch yet
because women contributed in religious ceremonies as tribal leaders. Because of these different ideals
and beliefs, the Europeans perceived the Native Americans as noble savages, as opposed to their first
encounter describing them as beautiful of stature and build. However, as time went on, so did the
Europeans desire for conquest, which resulted in the conquering of their lands. The Native Americans
were then forced to do labor and like many endured throughout history, they were mistreated. The
arrival of the Europeans started the promotion of a patriarchal society, having women do housework
and men taking authority ultimately taking some freedom away from the Native

School Structure And Family Influences
Education never really seemed to be priority in my hometown. Fresno, the 5th largest city in
California, is listed as the 8th least literate city in the US. I grew up in a part of town where less than
75% of the residents age 25 and over received a high school diploma; less than 13% earned a Bachelor
s degree; and only 3% have a graduate or professional degree. It s surprising that I even made it to
graduate school after reading statistics like these. My objective is to reflect on my school experience,
and explore how culture, school structure and family influences contributed to my successful
completion of grades K 16, even when the odds were not in my favor.
I came from a working class family of six whose ethnicity was mixed my father, White and my
mother, Hispanic. My siblings and I all went to Slater Elementary School from Kindergarten to 6th
grade. The school was less than a mile from my home, and the community was made up mostly of
working and lower middle class families. The ethnic distribution of my neighborhood was 53.8%
Hispanic, 28.2% White, 9.3% Black, 5.5% Asian, and 2% mixed race. Coming from a mixed race
family had its own challenges. In addition to being a cultural outlier in the community, I was always
confused about who I was ethnically, and was forced to choose which one identified with more (White
or Hispanic) on standardized tests, or when participating with play groups.

Pros And Cons Of Robber Barons
To decide upon which of either title the titans deserve more of, let us first consider what exactly
identifies and discerns a captain from a filthy baron. A captain of industry is a leader in their field. The
prosperity their expertise generates does not necessarily go to them. It advances or benefits the entire
economy. They create wealth. A robber baron, by comparison, focuses all their efforts on creating or
benefiting themselves, at the expense of society as a whole. They exploit wealth and are filthy

It s Not That Many People
It s not that many people... right? I asked myself. Even the idea of taking a group of 19 people of

Mass Movement In Eric Kushner s A Bright Room Called Day
Nowadays, mass movement is defined as an assimilation process, where people throw away their own
personal identities and follow submissively the orders of their leaders. The idea of people being
obedient to some of the cruelest orders, such as killing millions of people in the Holocaust, surprises
many people. Thus, many authors decide to find out the answer by bringing up many opinions about
the creation of the mass movement in their own books or plays for discussion. One of those authors is
Eric Hoffer, who suggests that a mass movement is created by the cooperation between the man of
words , the fanatic , and the man of actions (147). In fact, he points out that the three groups have the
same craving for something new and different that they believe can only be obtained through a
revolution. At the same time, Tony Kushner also offers his own belief on the topic through his play A
Bright Room Called Day by establishing a setting in Berlin, where people follow their own party in a
fight against the development of a Nazi government. Moreover, many characters in the play perform
somewhat similar roles to the three groups duties described by Hoffer. In fact, the characteristics of
Baz as an outsider and a man of words, Agnes as a fanatic who joins the party out of boredom, and
Zillah as a person of action who refuses to accept the Reagan government will be discussed in this
essay to identify the similarities and differences between the viewpoints of two authors about

Summary Of William Penn s Treaty With The Indians
The painting of Benjamin West s William Penn s Treaty with the Indians participates in myth, memory
making, and in nation building. The way the West s painting participates in myth is by portraying a
more noble and peaceful relationship between European colonist and Native Americans as the colonist
continue to colonized the Native American s land. The way that the painting participates in memory
making is by letting us be able to visualize and remember the event on how the Pennsylvania colony

  • 2. Civil War Spies Male and female spies were essential sources of information during the Civil War. The best spies were people you would never suspect. Spies were brave, faceless and they knew the environment very well. Their presence was incredibly excepted. Whether they dressed as men and joined the army, posed as mindless slaves, or just kept their ears opens in collective circles, spies provided necessary information. It was even a woman spy who provided Union battle plans to Confederate Army, which allowed them to win the First Battle of Manassass (First Bull Run). Throughout history, men have been spies and the American Civil War was no exception. The finest spies are people you would never suspect. Spencer Kellogg Brown, George Curtis and Philip ... On August 15, 1862, he was arrested, taken to Richmond for trial, and sentenced to hang. He was arrested after sinking the ferry supplying Fort Hudson, Georgia. On September 25, 1863 Spencer Kellogg Brown was hanged. Spencer once said before his dreadful death, Did you ever pass through a tunnel under a mountain? My passage, my death is dark, but beyond all is light and bright. George Curtis, another first rate spy, was living in New York at the beginning of the Civil War, and he joined a New York Infantry Regiment. He then became a Pinkerton agent, and a tremendous spy. He was selected in 1862 to obtain information from Richmond. He made his way to the Confederate capital as a contraband merchant selling gun caps, ammunition, and the much needed quinine. The day after reaching Virginia he was taken to the Confederate lines and to an audience with Lt. General Ambrose Powell Hill. General Hill gave him a pass to go on to Richmond and also asked Curtis if he would carry some dispatches as well. Curtis gladly agreed to carry out his chore. When Curtis reached Richmond he was introduced to Confederate Secretary of War Judah Benjamin where he negotiated for the delivery of his contraband goods and received a pass to move in and out of Richmond freely. ... • 3. Amelia Earhart Contributions Over 100 years ago, when humanity looked for new places to conquer, two men looked to the skies. Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first working motor airplane, and after that day, the world took a huge interest in aviation, causing many leading pioneers and innovators in the aerospace field to emerge, revolutionizing the way we look at the skies. Amelia Earhart was one of the first pilots to revolutionize the skies, and what made her particularly iconic was the fact that she was one of the first woman to fly. She discovered her love for flight after watching the Royal Flying Corps train in Toronto, Canada whilst she served as a Red Cross nurse in WWI. She then had her first airplane ride in December 1920 in California with WWI pilot Frank Hawks. After this confirmation of her love for aviation, she began lessons with instructor Neta Snook, another early woman pilot. Amelia did all she could (taking odd jobs) in order to pay for her lessons and then her first airplane: a Kinner Airster. She passed her flight test and got her license in December 1921, and afterwards she set out to define herself as a pioneer in the field of aviation, becoming the first woman to fly solo 14,000 feet above sea level. Her biggest accomplishment was flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean, as she was the first woman to do so. She continued to fly for many years, but then on a flight outside of the United States, both she and her plane were lost near the Bermuda Triangle, and no wreckage was ... • 4. Lightbo Lightbox Meaning The title is a metaphor for apartments in the modern society, which have colossal windows that change the way privacy is interpreted. The narrator, unnamed, describes lightboxes metaphorically [...] high rise boxes [...] , [...] boxes of light [...] and [...] individual lightboxes [...] . In that sense, the title can be associated with the modern way of living, living in modern apartments with colossal windows, overusing computers and smartphone that all provide light, just like a lightbox. He is known as being the first prominent writer to emerge from the biggest wave of Jewish immigration from Russia, but he was much more than just a writer. He was an editor and critic of several New York newspapers, a sociologists reformer, and a teacher of English to many Jewish immigrants following in his footsteps. This journey leads him to America, where he is first greeted by the Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island. When Cahan came to America many things changed for him, he was forced to leave behind his old life and try his hardest to assimilate himself into American culture. He left behind many aspects of his culture, but was still able to continue on with many of them. One piece of his life that was hardest to maintain was his language. Although he held onto Yiddish, Russian, and Hebrew, he immediately had to learn English which soon became a large part of his career and what made him so astounding. America is said to be the home of the free, and this is what so many immigrants desired when coming to America, and Cahan was no exception. He was a tremendous aid to those immigrants by devoting the first years of his life in America to teaching English. Alan Maley (1983) said: Teachers need to offer a variety of activities, techniques, and tasks in teaching to give equal opportunities to students with different styles of learning so all students progress. Girard, (1972) said: Rather than fish in one linguistic stream, we should cast our pedagogical net in all waters that might bring us in a profitable catch (Dillon, J. M., and A. A. Long, 2004). It is a whole integrated approach, for example, a listening activity with coordinated speaking or singing and supplementary features like pronunciation and form of the language. In this regard Canale and Swain rightly said about the four dimensions of communicative competence, grammar competence, sociolinguistic competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence (Richard, 1986, p.71). The Fight For Freedom By Harriet Jacobs Mallory Bruns Prof. Wall English 2327 001 21 November 2014 The Fight for Freedom Harriet Jacobs, in her narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, was born into slavery in the south. While her youth contained six years of happy childhood, a few tragedies and mistresses later, Jacobs spent many years in pain under the possession of her cruel five year old mistress, Emily Flint, and Emily s father, Dr. Flint. Once able to obtain freedom, Jacobs spent most of her life working for the Anti Slavery office in New York, in hope that one day she could make a difference in the world. She sought to win the respect and admiration of her readers for the courage with which she forestalled abuse and for the independence with which she chose a lover rather than having one forced on her (Jacobs 921). Linda Brett, the pseudonym that Jacobs uses to narrate her life story, endures the harsh behavior women slaves were treated with in the south during the nineteenth century. The dominant theme of the corruptive power and psychological abuse of slavery, along with symbolism of good and evil, is demonstrated throughout her narrative to create a story that exposes the terrible captivity woman slaves suffered. The Diet, The South Beach Diet Introduction: We live in a society that is crazed in following latest diets whether it be the Mediterranean diet, the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet etc. Each day there are new discoveries displayed throughout the media regarding diets and lifestyles, yet for a society so obsessed in the healthiest trend our statistics tend to show the flying numbers at which the population is diagnosed with chronic diseases related to nutritional factors. Thus a sound nutrition is more essential than ever. In the United States at least 4 of the 10 leading causes of are directly linked to what we eat. Majority if not all of the chronic diseases have a nutritional/lifestyle component that if caught in time can be reversed. Therefore the focus of the meal plan project was to gain an understanding of one s own personal nutritional intake by measuring calories consumed throughout the course of one week. In doing so the individual is made aware of any nutritional deficiencies or food excesses by the choices made when selecting food. The individual is able to fully grasp their individual needs by analyzing the data collected over their consumption of essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, water and proteins. • 26. The Importance Of Physical Similarity An old saying states that birds of a feather flock together. It can be quite comforting to meet someone who is similar to yourself. Like minded individuals not only validate our beliefs about the world, but also reduce the risk of conflicts and disagreements (Barelds Barelds Dijkstra, 2007, p. 479). In fact, research has shown that people are more likely to be in relationships with others who are similar to themselves in terms of attitudes, values, social group memberships, and physical appearances than with dissimilar others (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Physical Similarity A study conducted by Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson (2011) examined how seating preferences are affected by physical similarity in strangers. The researchers proposed that people would sit closer to physically similar others even when those physical similarities are unrelated to important markers of social status, such as sex and race. The study states that without the opportunity to interact facilitated by physical proximity, a relationship is less likely to form (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011, p. 879). Across 4 studies, it was found that people tend to sit closer to physically similar others than physically dissimilar others. Study 1 revealed significant aggregation in seating patterns on two easily observed characteristics: glasses wearing and sex. Seating arrangements at a Canadian university on campus computer lab with 31 seats was observed on 21 (non overlapping) occasions over 3 months. Using a seating diagram, the researcher recorded whether a person occupied each seat. In total, 356 individuals were observed; 23% were wearing glasses (N = 82) and 57.6% were women (N = 205). This shows that, as predicted, glasses wearers sat by other glasses wearers (and non glasses wearers by other non glasses wearers) more frequently than expected by chance alone. Study 2 replicated this finding with a wider variety of physical traits: race, sex, glasses wearing, hair length, and hair color. In the second study, 18 university classes (freshman and sophomore level) were observed. Three large classrooms at a Canadian university were chosen, and professors who taught courses in those classrooms were emailed for permission to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Turner s claims included that the expansion into the frontier fueled individualism, stimulated democracy and nationalism, and widened the opportunity of advancement. In the census of 1890, the frontier no longer had a place in the report because the previously unsettled areas had been broken into areas of settlement. Turner uses the definition of two people per square mile of land as the frontier s official closing, and no longer a point of historical relevance. The problem developed from excess credit of one of the field s founders, Frederick Jackson Turner. Although Turner s writings left out large groups of people, many Americans viewed Turner s thesis as Western history. When Turner s ideas began to be criticized, that something had gone wrong in Western history, not Turner s thesis. The view of Western history slowly began to change. Turner recognized the national significance of the frontier, so abandoning him would threaten the place of the West in American history (Limerick). In 1984, American historian Patricia Limerick attended a history conference. All of the focus of the history of America was on the revolutionary war in the East. This inspired her to write Legacy of Conquest. Limerick wanted to reclaim what other historians have said, critique Turner, but not throw the idea of the west away. Her thesis argues the West as a place of property and cultural dominance. Limerick defines the West as a place of conquest and diversity. Limerick stresses the West as a place rather than a process, but didn t draw exact borders of the region. Limerick deemphasizes the end of the frontier; she argues that the West was an important meeting ground for a diversity of languages, cultures, and religions, including minorities Turner left out. • 30. The Pros And Cons Of Free Community College Perhaps one of the greatest concerns that torments America s new generation is pursuing higher education in order to make more money and while avoiding being in debt, decades after graduation. This topic has become even more as tuition continues to rise and politicians are left to ponder the best course of action to insure that the next generation of Americans is more educated than the last. One particular solution was posed by former president, Barack Obama, who promoted the idea of free community college. Although, it may not be the most direct or most elegant solution, it would certainly be a push in the right direction. By making community college tuition free nationwide, states would become more invested in accommodating the influx of students, lead different school systems to compete by lowering tuition prices, and finally address America s shortcoming in adults who possess more than just high school diploma. Since free tuition would lead to overcrowding in schools, more schools would have to be built to compensate a blessing in disguise. Here, in our lovely state of California, more prisons have been built within the last couple of decades than universities. Thus, the state would become pressured into finally making up for lost time and start chipping away at the deficit our state has accrued. In an article by US News World Report regarding Obama s free community college idea, it was stated , If more middle class students choose community college, it could create an environment where states step up on funding. Moreover, the article continued to state the following: With a more diverse group of students, community colleges could gain political capital and funding that goes with it. Subsequently, education (that is financially feasible for this at or below the poverty line) is essentially a ticket out of poverty, a chance to move forward and embody the American dream. Ergo, (using California as part of this hypothetical scenario) by opening free community colleges, more students are encouraged to attend, therefore more schools need to be built, and lastly, once the schools are built more people will strive for a better life one devoid of being uneducated and at a higher risk for criminality. Give Me Liberty By Eric Foner Summary In this excerpt from Eric Foner s Give Me Liberty!, he discusses the significance of religion in the lives of Native Americans, as well as the social relations of Native Americans and the freedom and liberty they attempted to acquire. As mentioned in the previous discussion, certain tribes in North America were diverse. Although, they shared a common ideal and that was religion. Despite what most of us may think, their religion was not quite different to those of Europeans. Moreover, owning property was also something Native Americans believe as being a common resource, not an economic commodity, whereas in the United States, the only people that owned land and property were white males. Like every society, social status played a major role in determining one s reputation. For instance, kindness and trade were valued tremendously. Mass Movement In Eric Kushner s A Bright Room Called Day Nowadays, mass movement is defined as an assimilation process, where people throw away their own personal identities and follow submissively the orders of their leaders. The idea of people being obedient to some of the cruelest orders, such as killing millions of people in the Holocaust, surprises many people. Thus, many authors decide to find out the answer by bringing up many opinions about the creation of the mass movement in their own books or plays for discussion. One of those authors is Eric Hoffer, who suggests that a mass movement is created by the cooperation between the man of words , the fanatic , and the man of actions (147). In fact, he points out that the three groups have the same craving for something new and different that they believe can only be obtained through a revolution. At the same time, Tony Kushner also offers his own belief on the topic through his play A Bright Room Called Day by establishing a setting in Berlin, where people follow their own party in a fight against the development of a Nazi government. Moreover, many characters in the play perform somewhat similar roles to the three groups duties described by Hoffer. In fact, the characteristics of Baz as an outsider and a man of words, Agnes as a fanatic who joins the party out of boredom, and Zillah as a person of action who refuses to accept the Reagan government will be discussed in this essay to identify the similarities and differences between the viewpoints of two authors about ...
