The First Crusade And The Crusades
As the historian John Riley Smith points out The First Crusade was a violent and brutal episode during
which the crusaders cut out a swathe of suffering through Europe and Western Asia. In this description
of the First Crusade (1095/6 1099) Smith makes it difficult for us to see and, or uncover any elements
of pilgrimage in the crusaders actions. However, there are many different ways in which the crusades
have been described, the historian Christopher Tyerman on the other hand, steers towards the idea that
it is reasonable to label the Frist crusade as an armed Pilgrimage as it showed a defining commitment
to the church to accommodate the spiritual aspirations of the laity . However, it s worth pointing out
he labels other less sanctified ways in which the First Crusade could be described. The approach to
answer the question for this essay will focus mainly on whether the Crusaders joined and embarked on
the First Crusade with the belief of it representing an armed pilgrimage, as it seems important to focus
on the origins of the crusades in order to answer why it may be perceived so, after all every pilgrimage
must start from somewhere. However, in answering this question it s also important to consider other
factors such as the role of Pope Urban II, who has been labelled by some historians as playing a
pivotal role in crusaders participation and therefore the creation of the First Crusade and why it could
be perceived as an armed pilgrimage, or whether an

Biography Of Garson Kanin And David Crane And Hands On A...
This past week, I had the opportunity to experience a magnificent play called Born Yesterday by
Garson Kanin. This performance was the third of three plays I saw at the Arizona Repertory Theatre.
The other two plays were Epic Proportions by Larry Coen and David Crane and Hands on a Hardbody
by Doug Wright. These were the first plays I have been to, not only while attending the University of
Arizona, but in my generation as a teenager. All together, these performances were amazing and have
brought a newly improved insight to my perception of theatre. The hard work and dedication by the
actors, directors, producers, cast members, and sound developers were absolutely incredible and I
have tremendous respect for their efforts during the overall sequence of producing the plays. The most
recent performance I saw, Born Yesterday, can be described and reflected on through various topics
such as lighting, sound, directing and producing.
I decided to arrive a half hour early to witness all the elements of the stage, audience, and theater in
order to truly express my thoughts on the external features of the play. The Marroney theatre has 332
seats which were designed like movie theatre chairs. They were manufactured to be a bold red with
black carpet surrounding the floor to cover the entire theatre space. For the first thirty minutes before
Born Yesterday started, the theatre played classical music to soothe the ears of the audience and create
a bridge to a rather quiet prolonged

Noteabilitypro Essay
NoteAbilityPro is a music notation software editor developed by Hamel. This software was among the
first ones to address the issue of easing the integration between a musical score and a computational
music framework [Hammel, 2006]. NoteabilityPro started as a flexible music notation editor and later
the Integrated Interactive Music Performance Environment module (IIMPE) was added to support
interactivity with Max/Msp (PureData).
NoteAbiltyPro communicates with Max/Msp(PureData) by sending messages, so these messages are
added by the user to the score in the NotabilityPro environment as text messages and specifies the
measure and beat location with text numbers. Figure 5, shows one sample score of the NoteAbilityPro

2.2.2 Antescofo
Antescofo is a score following system that enables to code interactions between the instrumental parts
and the computer generated parts by providing a proprietary programming language [Giavitto, Cont
and Echeveste, 2015]. Antescofo stands for anticipatory synchronization and control of interactive
parameters in computer music, and its core is a score following system based on Hidden Markov
Models (HMM) with some variants to be able to model time changes which are one of the major
drawbacks of the HMM algorithm.
The Antescofo score following core performs tracking of audio events and triggers some customized
actions written in a text based programming descriptor. In Antescofo, the text based representation of
computer generated events follows a Score Language design pattern, which has a long tradition in
computer music since the debut of Mathews MUSIC N languages in the late 60 s [ Mathews, Miller,
Moore, Pierce, and Risset, 1969 ], but Antescofo extends the concept to a reactive language, meaning
that customized actions responds to events. The current Antescofo public version runs as a patch
extension of Max/Msp (or PureData).
Antescofo is an event based customizable score following, accordingly its most important
programming entities in Antescofo language are events and actions [Giavitto, Cont and Echeveste,
2015]. Figure 6 shows a sample code in Antescofo language with events and actions. Events

Maria Rowe 2 Ski Stores Case Study
This case was about Maria Howe, a ski enthusiast and owner of Howe 2 Ski stores, who opened this
store after graduation from college. Howe 2 Ski Stores is a chain of three ski and snowboarding shops
located in the suburbs of a large eastern city. (Nkomo et al., 2011, p. 202) She started this store
because she wanted to own a store that was full of state of the art equipment and clothing for skiers.
Her whole purpose was to have employees be students with expertise in the sport. After opening this
store, business grew and she ended up opening a couple more stores, with one focusing on
snowboarding. However, after opening these two more stores, her staff took a turn for the worse. She

Thomas Bambara The Lesson Summary
Being African American has been always difficult although they shaped American history through
sports, political science and by so many contributions. African Americans have been fighting for right,
freedom, and equality from the very beginning and they were dealing with a lot of social, economic
and political problem. Similarly, In the story The Lesson , Bambara reveal the bitter truth about the
economic and social inequality between white and Black Americans. She tries to show the actual
position of African Americans in 1960 and how they are compelled to live the miserable life. The way
she presents the story typically shows economic hardship of African Americans and the phycological
effect on children mental health. This story indirectly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

five dollars would pay for the rent and the piano bill too. What kinda work they do and how they live
and how come we ain t in on it? Where we are is who we are (Bambara 525). This scenario shows the
financial level among African American and white people. Black people are living very miserable life
and surviving with limited resources within the same country in other side white people were living
the superior and elevated life which shows the economic unfair between black and white people.
According the article African American in twentieth century by Thomas N. Maloney About half of
black men and about thirty five percent of black women who reported an occupation to the Census
said that they worked as a farmer or a farm laborer, as opposed to about one third of white men and
about eight percent of white women (Maloney 1). This census data shows that majority of black
people were involved in the farming where they were making very limited money in another side high
level and an official job was captured by the white people making having way more income than black
people. Therefore, this kind of unfair distribution of resources creates economic inequality between
these two races in 1960 s. Similarly, in this story, Miss More also tries to compare the economic level
of black and white people in so many

The Effects Of Child Labor Laws On Children And The Value...
Every single individual experiences childhood as a part of life s journey, yet no two individuals share
the same experiences, therefore when asking people to define childhood and what is considered
appropriate approaches to deal with children, perspectives and opinions vary significantly.
Independently of people s different perceptions of childhood, modern society has come to a consensus
that children are different from adults and must be spared from the burdens of the labor force.
However, child labor impacts the way society views children and the value it places upon them.
What is childhood and how is it perceived throughout history? The pioneer of the history of childhood
Philippe Ariès, defines it as a social construct that is culturally determined and establishes the
expectations set for children, which are determined by social leaders and experts (Hawes and Hiner
381). Since social values change overtime, the expectations that society places upon children also
changes. In order to understand the importance of child labor laws, and the factors that contributed to
the perception that children are not supposed to work, it is important to understand the role of child
labor and how the concept of childhood changed throughout history.
The perception of the importance of focusing on children and the part that they play in society, was
not a substantial matter of focus and study in previous eras. Consequently, history of childhood is
fairly new, and there are limited sources

Why College Athletes Should Be Paid
Why College Athletes Should Be Paid, and How The NCAA Can Do That The NCAA and the
universities represented by it are now making more money than ever through their athletic programs
than ever before. However, due to amateurism regulations set by the NCAA, the college athletes that
generate the massive revenue the NCAA receives are not paid at all. The article opens with the
argument that college athletes should be paid for their play. The argument is supported through
information proving that the NCAA undervalues athletes through the money they generate for their
school versus the amount of scholarship money the school provides them with. The article also
discusses how the NCAA also prevents athletes from marketing their own image and ... Show more

In fact, collegiate athletes are not permitted to use their own image for personal profit, as it violates
the NCAA s rules on amateurism. Paying college athletes has been debated and argued about for
years, with tensions increasing on both sides. However, one idea remains clear. The NCAA needs to
compensate college athletes, and can do so through salaries, compensation for games played, or
through endorsement deals. The NCAA is one of the largest sports organizations in the world,
representing college athletics through three divisions and over twenty different sports. It is a multi
billion dollar business that brings in revenue through ticket sales, television contracts, and sale of
memorabilia. However, with none of the profits going towards the athletes themselves, the NCAA is
using their students for personal gain within the organization. There are multiple ways the NCAA
profits off its athletes, by undervaluing players and giving them less compensation because of it, as
well as limiting their opportunities to make money on their own. Critics of compensating college
athletes claim that the scholarships the players receive is enough compensation for their play, as well
as earning an education. John Thelin of Time Magazine states that since scholarships are not taxed, it
becomes a better deal for athletes. He says an athlete with a $65,000 scholarship would be more

Laptops In Class Are Distracting America s Future...
The article written by Timothy D. Snyder in 2010 titled, Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting
America s Future Workforce is a persuasive article. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade
professors to ban laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. Snyder s arguments
against the use of laptops in classrooms are convincing, but he lacks evidence to support his stance
and he uses emotionally charge wording to sway the reader. One required element of persuasive
writing is the element of clearly defined terms. Snyder discusses various online activities students
engage in during class, such as making travel plans, reading the newspaper, or following the pennant
race, which is defined as the last few weeks of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One way Snyder does not use logical reasoning is the fact that he uses emotionally charged words.
Snyder uses a variety of emotionally charged words in his article, both positive and negative. The
positively charged words help sway the reader towards his point of view, while the negatively charged
words puts a negative connotation towards the opposing point of view. Snyder states, Meanwhile, we
are losing a long tradition of people learning from other people (166). Traditions are very special and
are passed down generations. Losing these traditions is very disheartening. Therefore, the use of the
word losing has a very negative emotional effect on a reader s attitudes towards the possible loss of
learning happening with laptops present. Another element of logical reasoning is making hasty
generalizations. Snyder states, I would not have the attention of these very gifted students if I did not
ban laptops and smartphones from my classroom (165). This is an example of a hasty generalization.
He is attributing their attention loss to laptops, not giving thought that even without computers, other
factors may play a role in attention loss. Students daydreaming or deep in thought, planning their day
would also be a barrier to keeping their

The Paralysis Of Eveline
Eveline faces a difficult dilemma: remain home like a dutiful daughter, or leave Dublin with her lover,
Frank, who is a sailor. Eveline Hill sits at a window in her home and reminisce the times when she as
a child played with other children in a field which now has been developed with new homes As
Eveline was trying to make a major decision whether or not to move to Buenos Ayres (escape) with
Frank. She holds two letters, one to her father, one to her brother Harry. She begins to favor the
sunnier memories of her old family life, when her mother was alive and her brother was living at
home. She thought back of the moment she promised her mom that she will put all her dedication in
maintaining this home. And she reasons that her life at home and doing all of those chores are hard,
but perhaps not in the worst position her father isn t always mean, after all. This memory is also
important for another reason as it suggests that a bond (or connection) still remains between Eveline,
her siblings and her father. Despite how her father treats her, Eveline still feels connected to him. This
pushes her to escape from the fate and embark on a new phase of life. Eveline s action, of dusting
every week for so many years is significant as it suggests repetition, doing the same thing, which in
turn would suggest a paralysis within Eveline. It is also significant that the dust remains. This suggests
that no matter how much Eveline does while at home nothing will change. Appears

Pearl Harbor Reaction Paper
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the single most important event of the century and there are
many lessons learned from this event that can be applied to modern day military principles.
Complacency on the part of the United States Government and senior military officials played a key
role in this attack being successful. No one ever thought the Japanese, or any other nation for that
matter, would directly attack the United States. Had the intelligence officials at the time utilized the
high impact, low probability critical thinking model to identify those high payoff targets, then maybe
the attack could have been prevented. In terms of technology, the United States had a distinct
advantage at the time, especially since the Japanese communications code was not only broken, but
remained unchanged for a significant amount of time. There were plenty of indicators that were
collected by United States intelligence activities and by Washington; however, most of the critical
information collected was never appropriately passed to the people that needed it most, the
commanders in the field. And finally, when the commanders in the field were weary of an impending
attack, their request for additional men, weapons, and equipment went unanswered despite
Washington having enough information to substantiate the concern.

Abstract
When discussing fashion women often talk about the amazing dress they picked up or the sexy peep
toe heels that they just couldn t bare to pass by, however, very often does one think of the bra and its
impact on fashion history. A necessary evil in most women s lives the over the shoulder boulder holder
has been around since ancient times in some form or another. Before the invention of the brassiere
women were suffocating in corsets that resulted in crushed rib cages and damaged reproductive
organs. But in 1914, Mary Phelps Jacob changed all that by stitching together the very first bra. The
rest, they say, is history.

Greek women are often depicted draped in a garment that exposes one breast, however, in states such
as Sparta where women often participated in sports a band of cloth called an apodesmos or
mastodeton was worn to bind down the breasts (Wikipedia History, 2010). The Romans tended to de
emphasize the breasts more so than the Greek, often wearing loose tunics in which the women would
also wear an adopted version of the Greek apodesme called a mamillare (Wikipedia History, 2010). In
the Middle Ages, the Holy Empire banned any form of breast binding instead tight laced bodices were
worn. Moving into the Renaissance Era emphasis was now on form with décolletage becoming
fashionable. Women achieved this with garments consisting of paste stiffened linen and eventually
included iron supports at the side and back. Upper class women favored firm breasts and wet nurses
were often used to keep the breasts from changing form. It wasn t until 1789 that the first corset
appeared, contraptions made from whalebone to make women s waists appear smaller and to confine
their breasts. Corsets caused many health problems, ranging from deformed rib cages to damaged
reproductive organs (Berry, 2006). Although women understood the dangers of wearing corsets,
proper ladies had little choice but to wear one otherwise be labeled as scandalous! Think Scarlett O

Abbot Suger of St. Denis and the Rise of Gothic Architecture Religion has always been a part of our
identity. Today, the population wander around the world seeing these wonderful churches and religious
buildings all around us. The architectural style of the Middle Ages was very prominent: high stone
vaults, internal elevations of multiple stories, rounded arches, and thick walls. This was characterized
as Romanesque architecture. Suger revolutionized everything. He reworked these ideas and
introduced, to the world, what is now known as the Gothic architectural style. Although Gothic
architecture played a prominent role during the Renaissance, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

People were criticizing the new building and was not very keen of the idea of renovation. Suger still
pushed for his project and fulfill his dreams to glorify the church. He began to rebuilt the church in
1137. One of the reasons behind this construction was that he was not contended with the dark and
sinister style of Romanesque architecture. He wanted the church to be an expression of modernity and
enlightenment. (Verdon and Dally 190 191). Suger considered it as modern because it was not heavy
looking and inspiring. His critics, including Bernard of Clairvaux, called it Gothic because it was
unrefined, barbaric and non Roman (Bradbury 295). These criticisms were all wrong because it was
completely renewed and this symbolized the top achievement of the medieval civilization. However,
they were right that it was completely not Roman. This building represented the apex of achievement
because, after centuries of being under the influence of the Roman empire, Suger gave birth to

Modernization Theory And The Theories Of Modernization Theory
DEVELOPMENT THEORIES
STUDENT NUMBER ; 1008455
Modernization theory represents the mixture of sociology theories within societies. It mainly reflects
the traditional views of society and highlight the internal factors of a country and development
(Bernstein, 1971). From the 18th century, it englight the individual ideas of modernism the civilians
living in the society. Whereas, the social changes were brought in revolution to change the view and
standards of living with the concept of functionalism, which focuses on interdependence (Tétreault
Abel, 1986). It is stated by the French philosopher Marquies de Condorcet, who bought a new division
of technology development and changes in the society.

Modernization theory argues that poor nations can change their status by increasing their economic

Dependency theory was arose in the response of modernization that where wealthy states are growing
quickly, on the other hand underdeveloped states still need some progress in the society (Seers, 1981).
Therefore, dependency theory brought a new concept to provide basic needs of poor nations such as
labor, markets, natural resources, etc.
Researcher highlighted, modernization has been the most dominant theory in societies and political
sector (Mihalache, 2007). Modernization theory faces criticism in the shape of dependency theory
because of the underdeveloped states were suffering and modernization theorist was focusing on the
development literature by neglecting the poor nations (Seers, 1981). The primary function of

How to Institutionalize Peace
Another major influence on the ability to institutionalize peace is the role of powerful national
individuals. Many people will follow an influential figure and do whatever they say if they believe in
what they are being told. This can be both good and bad depending on the situation. If the leader has
radical views and wants change, they will often resort to violence to get what is desired. That is the
worst case scenario because if peace is trying to be obtained, then fighting will only make the situation
worse. This is why major global powers such as the United States have overthrown important political
leaders in other countries to help restore order to the country. Larger, more powerful countries will
often make decisions to intervene if they feel it is in the best interest of the world or neighboring
countries. If such great power is put into the wrong hands, the consequences can be devastating.
McNamara is a good example of a powerful figure that had a terrific war mind, but wasn t the best
when it came to making or keeping peace. The Vietnam War was one that came with lots of
controversy because of how costly it was. The war lasted many years and resulted in the death of
many American soldiers. McNamara felt that we could win the war and continued to send troops into
battle. This was not good for any hopes of achieving peace because this did nothing but make the
Vietnamese unhappy and less likely to want to stop the war. Instead of trying to make peace

Punk Rock Is A Subclass Of Rock And Roll

different characteristics, while also evoking different feelings within the those who listen. This fact
hints at the concept of subclasses and super classes. For example, the genre rock and roll could be the
super class of punk rock, because Rock and Roll is a fairly broad category of music and punk rock is a
more specific type or flavor of rock; thus showing how punk rock is a subclass of Rock and Roll.
Punk Rock is a category within a category of music. Rock and Roll demonstrates how a genre can
evolve from being relatively specific to generally broad as time progresses and new music is
introduced over the years. With the superclass of Rock and Roll at the top of the hierarchy, under it
could be other subclasses like hard rock, blues rock, pop rock, psychedelic rock, Christian rock, Latin
Rock, southern rock, etc. I would not consider my grouping of music to be mutually exclusive. For

Mind Body Dualism
In The Concept of Mind, Gilbert Ryle labels the theory for mind body dualism as The Dogma of the
Ghost in the Machine (Ryle, 5). The argument for mind body dualism states that two substances exist:
physical substances and mental substances. Physical substances are composed of matter (Ryle, 3).
Moreover, physical substances are beings like bodies; they have a spatial location, but they cannot
think. In comparison, mental substances consist of consciousness (Ryle, 3). Mental substances are
beings like minds; they can think, but they do not have a spatial location. Furthermore, the theory for
mind body dualism states that every living person has both a mind, which is a mental substance, and a
body, which is a physical substance, and that the mind interacts with the body. Thus, when Ryle
speaks of the ghost in a machine, he is referring to the idea that there exists a mental substance, a
mind, which exists inside of the body, a physical substance. The mind is the ghost, which is inside the
body, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, analytic behaviorism is the idea that it is a specific behavior, the statements or claims an
individual makes, that an individual s mental state(s) can be explained. Analytic behaviorists hold that
claims about mental states analytically entail (Handout 3) a disposition to act in a specific manner.
This means that claims about mental states are the consequence of a specific mental state. For
example, if Donald Trump says I have a desire for soda , then one can reasonably deduce that Donald
Trump is likely to drink a soda that Trump has a behavioral disposition to drink soda. An analytic

her frustrations with America and wanting equality for black people. The curse word in the title made

lyrics, and how it led to many people, mainly Nina s white counterparts straying away once she

According to an interview of noted audio engineer Simon Kasprowicz what makes a good engineer
from a bad is totally subjective and depends upon individual desire because what may sound fantastic
to someone, others will find fault in (Kasprowicz, about.com).
When all of the tracks of a project have been recorded, assembled, and edited onto the digital audio
workstation or tape deck, the next step would be to individually mix the elements of their work in their
final edited forms. The mix down process occurs by routing the various tracks of a digital audio
workstation or tape based recorder through a hardware virtual mixing console to alter the overall
session s program, all which include getting relative level, spatial positioning, using equalizers, and
effects. Once these measures are taken care of, the engineer can then set up a rough mix of the song by
adjusting levels and the spatial pan positions. The producer who is mostly provides feedback to the
artist and the engineer during the session, listens to the mix and may ask the engineer to make specific
changes such as amplitude adjustments. Instruments in their isolated tracks are often soloed for
equalized changes to be made. The usual compression and limiting can be used in the mixing process
to make individual tracks sound fuller and more consistent

Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act
Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) the end of the tax heavens and the Banking Secrecy,
International cooperation or coercion?
The offshore tax evasion is a problem that most countries face mainly because there are many
structures that help sophisticated investors to avoid the payment of those taxes. Its been estimated that
the worldwide value of the offshore accounts is somewhere around $11.5 trillion. After the 2008
global financial crisis, the United States was going through one of the most severe recession, the tax
evasion crisis and the growing budget deficit at it highest point , in 2009 President Obama stated

Professor Bruce W. Bean refers to the implementation of FATCA as; FATCA is the most extraordinary
extension of Congressional extraterritorial overreach ever enacted . The unilateral decision made by
the U.S. government to impose these huge and costly compliance and reporting requirements to the
FFI s, it was alarming to the international financial community, only not because FFI s are forced to
implement expensive compliance programs in order to avoid the withholding that was imposed upon
them, but also because many jurisdictions rely heavily on their bank secrecy law as an asset for
making business and creating revenue in their own countries.

A Brief Look at Quantum Optics
Quantum optics tells us that left (l) and right (r) circularly polarized (CP) photon conveys integer spin
angular momentum, +ℏ and ℏ, respectively, although photon is massless elemental particle. The nature
of integer spin obeying Bose Einstein statics makes plural spins confine in an ultrasmall
temporalspace with the same quantum state, meanwhile, half integer spin like electron denies to share
the same quantum state in a molecular space, well known as Pauli exclusion principle. Intense CP
photon acts as an energy source that preferentially generate optically active substance from prochiral
substances and/or to preferentially decompose one enantiomer from racemic mixtures. On the other
hand, weak CP photon is used as a probe to detect substance chirality in the ground and photoexcited
states, known as circular dichroism (CD), optical rotation dispersion (ORD) and circularly polarized
luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy.1 Knowledge and understanding an efficient generation and
reversibility of optically active substances from achiral precursors in the absence of chiral chemical
influence has long been a challenging subject among chemists and scientists. This approach called
absolute asymmetric synthesis (AAS) is beneficial to avoid multiple step synthesis that often require
designed catalysts and specific chiral chemical sources with high ee.2 So far, several AASs have been
employed, including spontaneous symmetry breaking crystallization, vortex stirring,3f 3h

Explore the presentation of Orientalist discourses in the short film Surviving Sabu.
I will be exploring the short film Surviving Sabu which was written and directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid
in 1998, with reference to the 1942 film The Jungle Book. My analysis will question the presentation
of Indian and Muslim identities in both films.
Surviving Sabu presents the relationship between two characters: a father and his son. The family have
immigrated to England at some point in recent decades, although the audience is never told when or
specifically where from. The characters have anonymity, we are not even told their names. They could
be two individuals of any migrant Indian, Muslim family, and the son concludes that this is all that

They tell a kind of Indian folklore which is not of India, but constructed by Kipling himself. This is
not to suggest that what The Jungle Book depicts is a work of complete imagination; essentially an
idea with no corresponding reality, but rather that there are regular constellations of ideas which
become the pre eminent thing about the Orient . The Orient is conceptualised by strict and rigid lines
of thinking which can never do justice to the lives, histories and customs of the cultures and nations
whose location is in the East . It is the pre supposed authority of what is said about them (the Orient)
in the West which establishes the relationship between the Occident and the Orient as one of power, of
domination, of varying degrees of cultural hegemony. 5 Kipling arguably secures this authority in his
use of Hindi words and names; he can be perceived as merely documenting the true voices of the other
. In the same way, the 1942 film presents a character who is played by an actor of Indian heritage;
what is depicted henceforth says something true about Indian culture. Such presentations legitimise
stereotypical and problematic representations of Orientalist characters, for example the village men in
The Jungle Book as brutish, simple minded and power hungry. The greedy characters of the barber,
the pundit and Buldeo are easily corrupted by the

the headmaster informs his parents that he wasn t accepted at Whitehill. What happens next is a

I really dislike this trait in myself, so when I read it in Eli I took an immediate disliking to his
character in trying to suppress my own feelings about myself. But this is not the only flaw I noticed
about myself from the story.
Eli s mother Sylvia and I also have a lot in common. Through out the entire story she was enraptured
in talking about how many Remenzels had attended the Whitehill School and what contributions they
had made to it. She stated during one part of the drive to the school:
I look through this catalog, and I see all the buildings named after Remenzels, look through the back
and see all the hundreds of dollars given by Remenzels for scholarships, and I just can t help thinking
people named Remenzel are entitled to ask for a little something extra.
She was, infact, so enthralled by this information and talking of the school that she failed to notice the
strange and awkward behavior of her son. Again, it took reading the story a few times to understand
that this is another unattractive quality that I possess. I have the ability to become overly involved in
things and I forget to pay attention and listen to the people around me. What particularly stood out in
my mind and made me aware of this similarity was Sylvia s excessive repetition of the word I. To me
it represents her attention only being focused on what she

5.4 million people, with around 60 percent of people living within the major metropolitan areas of St.

impact agricultural output and general land use. Agriculture dominates Minnesota s landscape,
covering 46.7 percent of total land. The 2012 Census of Agriculture conducted by the United States

Forests cover 31 percent of total land in Minnesota, with 15.9 million acres classified as timberland,
While most homes are now fueled by hydrocarbons and fossil fuels, Minnesota timber is harvested for
several different purposes, including pulp and paper production as well as lumber for housing. Among
these trees, the Aspen species dominates the market with 61 percent of Minnesota s total timberland
cover. Private owners control 47 percent of the total timberland in Minnesota. The remaining 53
comes from a combination of federal, state, and local governments (Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources 2012). According to the von Thunen model, timber would have to be in close proximity to a
market in order to provide fuel for populations. In a modern perspective, however, timber forests, both
private and state owned are isolated away from society in areas with sparse populations. Thus, forests
and timberland may now be considered wilderness and potentially agree with the von Thunen model,
as they exist far from the confines of the city center. According to the University of Minnesota land
economics dataset, timberland values in closer proximity to the St. Paul Minneapolis metropolitan
area, specifically in Atkin County eclipse those of St. Louis County to the north. St. Louis County s
timberland is priced at $1,039 per acre, while Atkin County is priced at $1,329 per acre. Each of these
counties hold large amounts of timberland acreage, but Atkin may hold an advantage in land prices
due to its location closer to the city center. Another factor that may contribute to this difference in land
prices is the relative abundance in acreage and size of St. Louis County in comparison to Atkin. Sparse
population density and a larger number of trees in the area would increase the supply of timber in the

Epic Poem Parody
In the world of literature and poetry, it s typically not hard to find something written about a hero, or
something heroic, like an epic. Epics are long poems, typically told orally in ancient times, about the
adventures of a hero or heroine and their deeds. The Iliad should immediately come to the mind of any
student proficient in western literature. Nonetheless, the themes and archetypes of these works known
as epics are so well known, that they are even parodied, take completely out of context, and pasted on
the wall for laughs. One of the most recognized parodies of this kind would be Alexander Pope s The
Rape of the Lock. The Rape of the Lock is a story about taking a minor incident and satirizing it by
making it into a huge and important epic of divine proportions. One might think of the phrase a
tempest in a teapot , which perfectly describes this poem. In the poem, the main character, a girl
named Belinda, has her hair unwillingly cut by a baron, and the struggle to regain her lost hair even
pulls in mythical creatures like sylphs to describe this epic poem. Pope was actually asked to write
something like this in order to reconcile two Catholic families, as the hair cutting fiasco was based off
a real event that caused bad blood between the two aforementioned families. The man who requested
the poem, John Caryll, hoped that if the two families could laugh about the whole thing, they would
put the whole thing behind them and end their estrangement (Rippy, n.p.).

The Time Of The Butterflies By Julia Alvarez
The struggle for equality has existed for thousands of years. The first decree of human rights was
drafted by King Cyrus in 539 BCE and is still an evolving issue today (Finkel). The book In the Time
of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez is a historical fiction novel written to tell the tale of the Mirabal
sisters and their struggle against a dictator in the Dominican Republic. As women, the sisters were
objects of discrimination by the dictator s regime. Their struggle against obstacles forced
consequences upon them for speaking their minds in a censored society. Through Mate Mirabal, the
youngest sister, we see a shift in characterization from a cautious adolescent to a strong woman who
helps change her country. Joining the rebellion and spending time in jail changed Mate into a
courageous person. In In the Time of the Butterflies, Julia Alvarez uses the change in Mate s
characterization to describe the impact of oppression and people s need to have their voice heard.
During her first year at boarding school, Mate is portrayed as a shy girl who is unable to stand up for
herself. This is shown when Mate is unable to keep some girls from making fun of her. Her thoughts
are written in a diary and they give us insight into how she feels and reacts to certain situations. Her
diary is called her Little Book and she uses it to record her feelings when she is teased. Mate writes,

Terrorism Is A Very Real And Serious Threat
Terrorism is a very real and serious threat. The United States of America is not the only country under
attack by terrorists, the US is simply another target. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland,
Iraq, Myanmar, Yemen, Japan, and many other countries have all been under attack by terrorist
groups. The UK and Ireland were both under attack by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). They had a
simple plan outlined in their Green Book they wanted the establishment of a Democratic Socialist
Republic, for their long term goal. As for a short term goal, the book simply says, Brits out, (Boyne).
They had a goal and were working towards achieving it. As for the attacks in Japan, the most notable
attack there happened in the subway. A doomsday cult known as Aum Shinrikyo carried out the attack
by releasing sarin gas, a nerve gas, into the Tokyo subway system. Although the attack had a relatively
low number of fatalities, it still caused a major scare in Japan. Aum Shinrikyo believes that one is
allowed to kill another human who is committing evil deeds and destined for hell anyway (Seto).
Finally, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and many other Middle Eastern countries are still under attack by
many terrorist organizations. Groups such as the Taliban, Al Shabaab, and Al Qaeda are still very real
threats. Al Qaeda, for an example, have attacked America, the most famous being the attacks on the

Research Note On Distressed Debt
Research Note on Distressed Debt
Distressed securities are securities of companies or government that are experiencing distress (either
in financial or operational terms), default, or even bankruptcy. In case of debt, this is called distressed
debt. Investing in distressed debt can result in big returns, but the downside is that when a company
goes completely bankrupt, the value of your securities can go to zero.
Distressed debt sells at a very low percentage of par value, for example 30 cents on the dollar. This
percentage indicates that you can buy debt that is worth 1$ at maturity for 30 cents, which seems very
attractive but there is of course a reason that it is only worth 30 cents on the dollar. If the distressed
company emerges as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This limits the scope of potential investors to sophisticated individual investors, hedge funds, private
equity firms, vulture funds, and certain investment banks. The majority of distressed debt is bought by
these institutional investors because they have the resources, expertise, and sophisticated risk
management systems to assess the risk of these debt securities.
There are various ways investors can invest in distressed debt. The easiest way is to buy the distressed
debt in the bond market. Because most mutual funds are not allowed to invest in distressed debt, there
is ample supply of debt available shortly after a firm defaults. The second way is to buy distressed
debt directly from a mutual fund, since they have to sell according to their mandate. These
transactions are generally limited to institutional investors since large quantities of debt, and therefore
large quantities of cash, exchange hands. The third and final options is to buy directly into the
distressed firm. This involves working directly with the company to extend its credit, either in the
form of bonds or a revolving line of credit. Distressed companies usually need significant amounts of
cash for a turnaround, so it is common for a consortium of investment banks and hedge funds to
provide this cash to avoid overexposure to one

Comparison Of Receptors And Olfactory
Odors are a distinctive smell, especially an un unpleasant one. Odors attach to receptors of olfactory
cells in the nasal mucosa. Olfactory cells in the nasal mucosa are where they activate nerve signals.
These signals are processed in the olfactory bulb, a structure at the base of the forebrain that transmit
the signal to other brain areas. People have about 450 olfactory receptors. Each receptor can be
activated by many different odor molecules, and each odor molecule can activate several different
types of receptors. However, the forces that bind receptors and odor molecules can greatly differ in
strength, so that some interactions are better fits than others. The complication of receptors and their
synergy with odor molecules are what

Astonishing Strength Characteristics of Stone Thrower Wales Defects in Graphene under Compressive
Load
G. Rajasekaran Rajesh Kumar and Avinash Parashar Department of Mechanical and Industrial
Engineering Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee 247667, India
ABSTRACT: One atom thick sheet of carbon discovered this century is flaunted not just for its
electrical properties but also for its physical strength and flexibility. The bonds between carbon atoms
are well known as the strongest in nature, so a perfect sheet of graphene should withstand just about
anything, but to use it in real time applications, we have to understand the useful strength of graphene.
So for, researchers have looked extensively at graphene s electronic properties and tensile strength,
nobody, had taken comprehensive measurements of its ability to withstand a compressive load. We
find that, counter to standard reasoning, graphene sheets with Stone Thrower Wales (STW) defects are
able to bear high compressive stress as compared to pristine graphene. We show that this trend can be
understood by considering the critical bonds in the seven and five membered carbon rings which bears
the maximum compressive stress. Graphene with STW defects is stronger in compressive strength
point of view because they are able to better accommodate these strained rings. Our results provide
guidelines for designing graphene with STW defects to obtain maximum compressive strength, so that
we can get the benefit of this

Made Up Hypothesis
The following report is on the different hypotheses developed on the topic of the Origin of Life. It will
include six of the created hypotheses: Primordial Soup, Iron Sulfur, Deep Sea Vent, RNA World,
Community Clay, and Panspermia. It will explain who came up with each hypothesis, when it was
created, their claim, evidence supporting their claim, identification of testing if any of the hypothesis,
and reasoning for making their hypothesis. All sources used came from the worldwide web. What may
be interesting is that all hypotheses differ with how they believe life started and the evidence
supporting it. But some are closely connected to each other In conclusion, most, or even all, of these
hypotheses may be incorrect on how the world came to be. Having no witnesses present during the
beginning of time, no one is really sure of the actual circumstances of prehistoric Earth. However, all
claims are logical and are convincing hypotheses for the origin of biomolecules. ... Show more content

They believed that organisms were formed by the molecules found in Earth s primordial soup . That
chemicals and an energy source had combine to form the first organisms formed in water, a pond or
ocean, which was Earth s primordial soup. They had concluded to this hypothesis after realizing the
evolution of molecules which contained carbon. The Miller Urey experiment was how this hypothesis
was tested. By using a mixture of gases, the experiment was able to produce macromolecules, such as
amino acids. Their reason was that oxygen in the atmosphere prevented reactions to occur so results
wouldn t compare to ones billions of years

Ancient Civilizations Of Mesopotamia And Mesopotamia
Sumerian (3500 2300BC) Babylonian (1792 1750 BC) both belong to civilizations of Mesopotamia,
but they existed different period. The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia are the source of the
earliest surviving art; these civilizations were situated between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers.
Dating back to 3500 B.C.E., Mesopotamian art was intended to serve as a way to glorify powerful
rulers and their connection to divinity. Art was made from natural resources such as stone, shells,
alabaster and marble, and was often created as didactic pieces. No artist signatures can be found on
most of the work, because the pieces were meant to embody the subject matter, rather than the creator.
Popular items that typify this time period include cylindrical seals, steles, narrative relief sculptures,
and lavishly decorated tombs. More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers
began to teem with life first the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian
empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. Examples of fine
works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuliahve been found. Stone, wood, and metal
was imported. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex primarily used for religious
purposes painting and sculpture the main median used. Of the many portraits produced in this area,
some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble,

Carbon Dioxide And The Effects Of Climate Change
Carbon Dioxide and the Effects of Climate Change
At the 2016 Oscar awards, Leonardo DiCaprio received a long awaited first Oscar, only to mention
climate change as, the most urgent threat facing our entire species. Talk of climate change has become
more prevalent in recent years, but has not done so unjustified. Global ambient air temperatures have
risen at alarming rates and are projected to rise up to 6 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. Such drastic
changes in the air temperature will not only have an effect on heat distribution, but could prove
disastrous to individual ecosystems and the overall biosphere of planet earth. Many ecosystems are a
delicate balance of plant and animal life and, when altered by slight margins, can harm carbon cycles
and imperiled species. Furthermore, evaporation and precipitation rates will also morph over time to
match the changing of the seasons, further antagonizing severe weather patterns. In combination, all of
these side effects of carbon emissions provide a bleak future for the earth and all of its inhabitants, and
if these problems are not addressed properly we could all suffer the consequences for future
generations to come. Research suggests that the harmful effects of carbon emissions must be
addressed aggressively because many species are suffering in number as well as quality of life,
weather patterns and rainfall are behaving more erratically, and the overall temperature of the earth
continues to rise at an alarming rate.

  • 2. The First Crusade And The Crusades As the historian John Riley Smith points out The First Crusade was a violent and brutal episode during which the crusaders cut out a swathe of suffering through Europe and Western Asia. In this description of the First Crusade (1095/6 1099) Smith makes it difficult for us to see and, or uncover any elements of pilgrimage in the crusaders actions. However, there are many different ways in which the crusades have been described, the historian Christopher Tyerman on the other hand, steers towards the idea that it is reasonable to label the Frist crusade as an armed Pilgrimage as it showed a defining commitment to the church to accommodate the spiritual aspirations of the laity . However, it s worth pointing out he labels other less sanctified ways in which the First Crusade could be described. The approach to answer the question for this essay will focus mainly on whether the Crusaders joined and embarked on the First Crusade with the belief of it representing an armed pilgrimage, as it seems important to focus on the origins of the crusades in order to answer why it may be perceived so, after all every pilgrimage must start from somewhere. However, in answering this question it s also important to consider other factors such as the role of Pope Urban II, who has been labelled by some historians as playing a pivotal role in crusaders participation and therefore the creation of the First Crusade and why it could be perceived as an armed pilgrimage, or whether an ... • 3. Biography Of Garson Kanin And David Crane And Hands On A... This past week, I had the opportunity to experience a magnificent play called Born Yesterday by Garson Kanin. This performance was the third of three plays I saw at the Arizona Repertory Theatre. The other two plays were Epic Proportions by Larry Coen and David Crane and Hands on a Hardbody by Doug Wright. These were the first plays I have been to, not only while attending the University of Arizona, but in my generation as a teenager. All together, these performances were amazing and have brought a newly improved insight to my perception of theatre. The hard work and dedication by the actors, directors, producers, cast members, and sound developers were absolutely incredible and I have tremendous respect for their efforts during the overall sequence of producing the plays. The most recent performance I saw, Born Yesterday, can be described and reflected on through various topics such as lighting, sound, directing and producing. I decided to arrive a half hour early to witness all the elements of the stage, audience, and theater in order to truly express my thoughts on the external features of the play. The Marroney theatre has 332 seats which were designed like movie theatre chairs. They were manufactured to be a bold red with black carpet surrounding the floor to cover the entire theatre space. For the first thirty minutes before Born Yesterday started, the theatre played classical music to soothe the ears of the audience and create a bridge to a rather quiet prolonged ... This software was among the first ones to address the issue of easing the integration between a musical score and a computational music framework [Hammel, 2006]. NoteabilityPro started as a flexible music notation editor and later the Integrated Interactive Music Performance Environment module (IIMPE) was added to support interactivity with Max/Msp (PureData). NoteAbiltyPro communicates with Max/Msp(PureData) by sending messages, so these messages are added by the user to the score in the NotabilityPro environment as text messages and specifies the measure and beat location with text numbers. Antescofo stands for anticipatory synchronization and control of interactive parameters in computer music, and its core is a score following system based on Hidden Markov Models (HMM) with some variants to be able to model time changes which are one of the major drawbacks of the HMM algorithm. The Antescofo score following core performs tracking of audio events and triggers some customized actions written in a text based programming descriptor. In Antescofo, the text based representation of computer generated events follows a Score Language design pattern, which has a long tradition in computer music since the debut of Mathews MUSIC N languages in the late 60 s [ Mathews, Miller, Moore, Pierce, and Risset, 1969 ], but Antescofo extends the concept to a reactive language, meaning that customized actions responds to events. The current Antescofo public version runs as a patch extension of Max/Msp (or PureData). • 7. The Effects Of Child Labor Laws On Children And The Value... Every single individual experiences childhood as a part of life s journey, yet no two individuals share the same experiences, therefore when asking people to define childhood and what is considered appropriate approaches to deal with children, perspectives and opinions vary significantly. Independently of people s different perceptions of childhood, modern society has come to a consensus that children are different from adults and must be spared from the burdens of the labor force. However, child labor impacts the way society views children and the value it places upon them. What is childhood and how is it perceived throughout history? The pioneer of the history of childhood Philippe Ariès, defines it as a social construct that is culturally determined and establishes the expectations set for children, which are determined by social leaders and experts (Hawes and Hiner 381). Since social values change overtime, the expectations that society places upon children also changes. In order to understand the importance of child labor laws, and the factors that contributed to the perception that children are not supposed to work, it is important to understand the role of child labor and how the concept of childhood changed throughout history. The perception of the importance of focusing on children and the part that they play in society, was not a substantial matter of focus and study in previous eras. Consequently, history of childhood is fairly new, and there are limited sources ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fact, collegiate athletes are not permitted to use their own image for personal profit, as it violates the NCAA s rules on amateurism. Paying college athletes has been debated and argued about for years, with tensions increasing on both sides. However, one idea remains clear. The NCAA needs to compensate college athletes, and can do so through salaries, compensation for games played, or through endorsement deals. The NCAA is one of the largest sports organizations in the world, representing college athletics through three divisions and over twenty different sports. It is a multi billion dollar business that brings in revenue through ticket sales, television contracts, and sale of memorabilia. However, with none of the profits going towards the athletes themselves, the NCAA is using their students for personal gain within the organization. There are multiple ways the NCAA profits off its athletes, by undervaluing players and giving them less compensation because of it, as well as limiting their opportunities to make money on their own. Critics of compensating college athletes claim that the scholarships the players receive is enough compensation for their play, as well as earning an education. His purpose in writing this article was to persuade professors to ban laptops in the classroom because he feels they are a distraction. Snyder s arguments against the use of laptops in classrooms are convincing, but he lacks evidence to support his stance and he uses emotionally charge wording to sway the reader. Snyder uses a variety of emotionally charged words in his article, both positive and negative. Snyder states, Meanwhile, we are losing a long tradition of people learning from other people (166). Traditions are very special and are passed down generations. Losing these traditions is very disheartening. Therefore, the use of the word losing has a very negative emotional effect on a reader s attitudes towards the possible loss of learning happening with laptops present. Another element of logical reasoning is making hasty generalizations. Snyder states, I would not have the attention of these very gifted students if I did not ban laptops and smartphones from my classroom (165). This is an example of a hasty generalization. Eveline Hill sits at a window in her home and reminisce the times when she as a child played with other children in a field which now has been developed with new homes As Eveline was trying to make a major decision whether or not to move to Buenos Ayres (escape) with Frank. She holds two letters, one to her father, one to her brother Harry. She begins to favor the sunnier memories of her old family life, when her mother was alive and her brother was living at home. She thought back of the moment she promised her mom that she will put all her dedication in maintaining this home. And she reasons that her life at home and doing all of those chores are hard, but perhaps not in the worst position her father isn t always mean, after all. This memory is also important for another reason as it suggests that a bond (or connection) still remains between Eveline, her siblings and her father. Despite how her father treats her, Eveline still feels connected to him. This pushes her to escape from the fate and embark on a new phase of life. Eveline s action, of dusting every week for so many years is significant as it suggests repetition, doing the same thing, which in turn would suggest a paralysis within Eveline. It is also significant that the dust remains. This suggests that no matter how much Eveline does while at home nothing will change. Appears ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pearl Harbor Reaction Paper The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was the single most important event of the century and there are many lessons learned from this event that can be applied to modern day military principles. Complacency on the part of the United States Government and senior military officials played a key role in this attack being successful. No one ever thought the Japanese, or any other nation for that matter, would directly attack the United States. Had the intelligence officials at the time utilized the high impact, low probability critical thinking model to identify those high payoff targets, then maybe the attack could have been prevented. In terms of technology, the United States had a distinct advantage at the time, especially since the Japanese communications code was not only broken, but remained unchanged for a significant amount of time. There were plenty of indicators that were collected by United States intelligence activities and by Washington; however, most of the critical information collected was never appropriately passed to the people that needed it most, the commanders in the field. Greek women are often depicted draped in a garment that exposes one breast, however, in states such as Sparta where women often participated in sports a band of cloth called an apodesmos or mastodeton was worn to bind down the breasts (Wikipedia History, 2010). The Romans tended to de emphasize the breasts more so than the Greek, often wearing loose tunics in which the women would also wear an adopted version of the Greek apodesme called a mamillare (Wikipedia History, 2010). In the Middle Ages, the Holy Empire banned any form of breast binding instead tight laced bodices were worn. Moving into the Renaissance Era emphasis was now on form with décolletage becoming fashionable. Women achieved this with garments consisting of paste stiffened linen and eventually included iron supports at the side and back. Upper class women favored firm breasts and wet nurses were often used to keep the breasts from changing form. It wasn t until 1789 that the first corset appeared, contraptions made from whalebone to make women s waists appear smaller and to confine their breasts. He wanted the church to be an expression of modernity and enlightenment. (Verdon and Dally 190 191). Suger considered it as modern because it was not heavy looking and inspiring. • 17. How to Institutionalize Peace Another major influence on the ability to institutionalize peace is the role of powerful national individuals. Many people will follow an influential figure and do whatever they say if they believe in what they are being told. This can be both good and bad depending on the situation. If the leader has radical views and wants change, they will often resort to violence to get what is desired. That is the worst case scenario because if peace is trying to be obtained, then fighting will only make the situation worse. This is why major global powers such as the United States have overthrown important political leaders in other countries to help restore order to the country. Larger, more powerful countries will often make decisions to intervene if they feel it is in the best interest of the world or neighboring countries. If such great power is put into the wrong hands, the consequences can be devastating. McNamara is a good example of a powerful figure that had a terrific war mind, but wasn t the best when it came to making or keeping peace. The Vietnam War was one that came with lots of controversy because of how costly it was. The war lasted many years and resulted in the death of many American soldiers. A heavy rock song would be more suitable for the rock playlist that I have. Songs have different characteristics, while also evoking different feelings within the those who listen. This fact hints at the concept of subclasses and super classes. For example, the genre rock and roll could be the super class of punk rock, because Rock and Roll is a fairly broad category of music and punk rock is a more specific type or flavor of rock; thus showing how punk rock is a subclass of Rock and Roll. • 20. Mind Body Dualism In The Concept of Mind, Gilbert Ryle labels the theory for mind body dualism as The Dogma of the Ghost in the Machine (Ryle, 5). The argument for mind body dualism states that two substances exist: physical substances and mental substances. Physical substances are composed of matter (Ryle, 3). Moreover, physical substances are beings like bodies; they have a spatial location, but they cannot think. In comparison, mental substances consist of consciousness (Ryle, 3). Mental substances are beings like minds; they can think, but they do not have a spatial location. Furthermore, the theory for mind body dualism states that every living person has both a mind, which is a mental substance, and a body, which is a physical substance, and that the mind interacts with the body. When all of the tracks of a project have been recorded, assembled, and edited onto the digital audio workstation or tape deck, the next step would be to individually mix the elements of their work in their final edited forms. The mix down process occurs by routing the various tracks of a digital audio workstation or tape based recorder through a hardware virtual mixing console to alter the overall session s program, all which include getting relative level, spatial positioning, using equalizers, and effects. Once these measures are taken care of, the engineer can then set up a rough mix of the song by adjusting levels and the spatial pan positions. The producer who is mostly provides feedback to the artist and the engineer during the session, listens to the mix and may ask the engineer to make specific changes such as amplitude adjustments. Instruments in their isolated tracks are often soloed for equalized changes to be made. The usual compression and limiting can be used in the mixing process to make individual tracks sound fuller and more consistent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The offshore tax evasion is a problem that most countries face mainly because there are many structures that help sophisticated investors to avoid the payment of those taxes. Its been estimated that the worldwide value of the offshore accounts is somewhere around $11.5 trillion. After the 2008 global financial crisis, the United States was going through one of the most severe recession, the tax evasion crisis and the growing budget deficit at it highest point , in 2009 President Obama stated during an interview I did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of, you know, fat cat bankers on Wall ... The IFI s will be required to report information on financial accounts of U.S. persons and foreign entities with significant U.S. ownership to the IRS in order to avoid the 30% withhold, among other duties that would be discussed later on. Professor Bruce W. Bean refers to the implementation of FATCA as; FATCA is the most extraordinary extension of Congressional extraterritorial overreach ever enacted . The unilateral decision made by the U.S. government to impose these huge and costly compliance and reporting requirements to the FFI s, it was alarming to the international financial community, only not because FFI s are forced to implement expensive compliance programs in order to avoid the withholding that was imposed upon them, but also because many jurisdictions rely heavily on their bank secrecy law as an asset for making business and creating revenue in their own countries. • 24. A Brief Look at Quantum Optics Quantum optics tells us that left (l) and right (r) circularly polarized (CP) photon conveys integer spin angular momentum, +ℏ and ℏ, respectively, although photon is massless elemental particle. The nature of integer spin obeying Bose Einstein statics makes plural spins confine in an ultrasmall temporalspace with the same quantum state, meanwhile, half integer spin like electron denies to share the same quantum state in a molecular space, well known as Pauli exclusion principle. Intense CP photon acts as an energy source that preferentially generate optically active substance from prochiral substances and/or to preferentially decompose one enantiomer from racemic mixtures. On the other hand, weak CP photon is used as a probe to detect substance chirality in the ground and photoexcited states, known as circular dichroism (CD), optical rotation dispersion (ORD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopy.1 Knowledge and understanding an efficient generation and reversibility of optically active substances from achiral precursors in the absence of chiral chemical influence has long been a challenging subject among chemists and scientists. This approach called absolute asymmetric synthesis (AAS) is beneficial to avoid multiple step synthesis that often require designed catalysts and specific chiral chemical sources with high ee.2 So far, several AASs have been employed, including spontaneous symmetry breaking crystallization, vortex stirring,3f 3h ... I will be exploring the short film Surviving Sabu which was written and directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid in 1998, with reference to the 1942 film The Jungle Book. My analysis will question the presentation of Indian and Muslim identities in both films. Surviving Sabu presents the relationship between two characters: a father and his son. The family have immigrated to England at some point in recent decades, although the audience is never told when or specifically where from. The characters have anonymity, we are not even told their names. They could be two individuals of any migrant Indian, Muslim family, and the son concludes that this is all that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They tell a kind of Indian folklore which is not of India, but constructed by Kipling himself. This is not to suggest that what The Jungle Book depicts is a work of complete imagination; essentially an idea with no corresponding reality, but rather that there are regular constellations of ideas which become the pre eminent thing about the Orient . The Orient is conceptualised by strict and rigid lines of thinking which can never do justice to the lives, histories and customs of the cultures and nations whose location is in the East . It is the pre supposed authority of what is said about them (the Orient) in the West which establishes the relationship between the Occident and the Orient as one of power, of domination, of varying degrees of cultural hegemony. 5 Kipling arguably secures this authority in his use of Hindi words and names; he can be perceived as merely documenting the true voices of the other . In the same way, the 1942 film presents a character who is played by an actor of Indian heritage; what is depicted henceforth says something true about Indian culture. Such presentations legitimise stereotypical and problematic representations of Orientalist characters, for example the village men in The Jungle Book as brutish, simple minded and power hungry. The greedy characters of the barber, the pundit and Buldeo are easily corrupted by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through out the entire story she was enraptured in talking about how many Remenzels had attended the Whitehill School and what contributions they had made to it. She stated during one part of the drive to the school: I look through this catalog, and I see all the buildings named after Remenzels, look through the back and see all the hundreds of dollars given by Remenzels for scholarships, and I just can t help thinking people named Remenzel are entitled to ask for a little something extra. Forests cover 31 percent of total land in Minnesota, with 15.9 million acres classified as timberland, While most homes are now fueled by hydrocarbons and fossil fuels, Minnesota timber is harvested for several different purposes, including pulp and paper production as well as lumber for housing. Among these trees, the Aspen species dominates the market with 61 percent of Minnesota s total timberland cover. Private owners control 47 percent of the total timberland in Minnesota. The remaining 53 comes from a combination of federal, state, and local governments (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources 2012). According to the von Thunen model, timber would have to be in close proximity to a market in order to provide fuel for populations. In a modern perspective, however, timber forests, both private and state owned are isolated away from society in areas with sparse populations. Thus, forests and timberland may now be considered wilderness and potentially agree with the von Thunen model, as they exist far from the confines of the city center. According to the University of Minnesota land economics dataset, timberland values in closer proximity to the St. Paul Minneapolis metropolitan area, specifically in Atkin County eclipse those of St. Louis County to the north. St. Louis County s timberland is priced at $1,039 per acre, while Atkin County is priced at $1,329 per acre. Each of these counties hold large amounts of timberland acreage, but Atkin may hold an advantage in land prices due to its location closer to the city center. Epics are long poems, typically told orally in ancient times, about the adventures of a hero or heroine and their deeds. The Iliad should immediately come to the mind of any student proficient in western literature. Nonetheless, the themes and archetypes of these works known as epics are so well known, that they are even parodied, take completely out of context, and pasted on the wall for laughs. One of the most recognized parodies of this kind would be Alexander Pope s The Rape of the Lock. The Rape of the Lock is a story about taking a minor incident and satirizing it by making it into a huge and important epic of divine proportions. One might think of the phrase a tempest in a teapot , which perfectly describes this poem. In the poem, the main character, a girl named Belinda, has her hair unwillingly cut by a baron, and the struggle to regain her lost hair even pulls in mythical creatures like sylphs to describe this epic poem. Pope was actually asked to write something like this in order to reconcile two Catholic families, as the hair cutting fiasco was based off a real event that caused bad blood between the two aforementioned families. The man who requested the poem, John Caryll, hoped that if the two families could laugh about the whole thing, they would put the whole thing behind them and end their estrangement (Rippy, n.p.). ... As women, the sisters were objects of discrimination by the dictator s regime. Their struggle against obstacles forced consequences upon them for speaking their minds in a censored society. Through Mate Mirabal, the youngest sister, we see a shift in characterization from a cautious adolescent to a strong woman who helps change her country. Joining the rebellion and spending time in jail changed Mate into a courageous person. Distressed debt sells at a very low percentage of par value, for example 30 cents on the dollar. We find that, counter to standard reasoning, graphene sheets with Stone Thrower Wales (STW) defects are able to bear high compressive stress as compared to pristine graphene. We show that this trend can be understood by considering the critical bonds in the seven and five membered carbon rings which bears the maximum compressive stress. Graphene with STW defects is stronger in compressive strength point of view because they are able to better accommodate these strained rings. Our results provide guidelines for designing graphene with STW defects to obtain maximum compressive strength, so that we can get the benefit of this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Made Up Hypothesis The following report is on the different hypotheses developed on the topic of the Origin of Life. It will include six of the created hypotheses: Primordial Soup, Iron Sulfur, Deep Sea Vent, RNA World, Community Clay, and Panspermia. It will explain who came up with each hypothesis, when it was created, their claim, evidence supporting their claim, identification of testing if any of the hypothesis, and reasoning for making their hypothesis. All sources used came from the worldwide web. What may be interesting is that all hypotheses differ with how they believe life started and the evidence supporting it. But some are closely connected to each other In conclusion, most, or even all, of these hypotheses may be incorrect on how the world came to be. Having no witnesses present during the beginning of time, no one is really sure of the actual circumstances of prehistoric Earth. However, all claims are logical and are convincing hypotheses for the origin of biomolecules. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believed that organisms were formed by the molecules found in Earth s primordial soup . That chemicals and an energy source had combine to form the first organisms formed in water, a pond or ocean, which was Earth s primordial soup. They had concluded to this hypothesis after realizing the evolution of molecules which contained carbon. The Miller Urey experiment was how this hypothesis was tested. By using a mixture of gases, the experiment was able to produce macromolecules, such as amino acids. Their reason was that oxygen in the atmosphere prevented reactions to occur so results wouldn t compare to ones billions of years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Ancient Civilizations Of Mesopotamia And Mesopotamia Sumerian (3500 2300BC) Babylonian (1792 1750 BC) both belong to civilizations of Mesopotamia, but they existed different period. The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia are the source of the earliest surviving art; these civilizations were situated between the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers. Dating back to 3500 B.C.E., Mesopotamian art was intended to serve as a way to glorify powerful rulers and their connection to divinity. Art was made from natural resources such as stone, shells, alabaster and marble, and was often created as didactic pieces. No artist signatures can be found on most of the work, because the pieces were meant to embody the subject matter, rather than the creator. Popular items that typify this time period include cylindrical seals, steles, narrative relief sculptures, and lavishly decorated tombs. More than 4,000 years ago the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers began to teem with life first the Sumerian, then the Babylonian, Assyrian, Chaldean, and Persian empires. Here too excavations have unearthed evidence of great skill and artistry. Examples of fine works in marble, diorite, hammered gold, and lapis lazuliahve been found. Stone, wood, and metal was imported. Sumerian art and architecture was ornate and complex primarily used for religious purposes painting and sculpture the main median used. Of the many portraits produced in this area, some of the best are those of Gudea, ruler of Lagash. Some of the portraits are in marble, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Carbon Dioxide And The Effects Of Climate Change Carbon Dioxide and the Effects of Climate Change At the 2016 Oscar awards, Leonardo DiCaprio received a long awaited first Oscar, only to mention climate change as, the most urgent threat facing our entire species. Talk of climate change has become more prevalent in recent years, but has not done so unjustified. Global ambient air temperatures have risen at alarming rates and are projected to rise up to 6 degrees Celsius by the year 2100. Such drastic changes in the air temperature will not only have an effect on heat distribution, but could prove disastrous to individual ecosystems and the overall biosphere of planet earth. Many ecosystems are a delicate balance of plant and animal life and, when altered by slight margins, can harm carbon cycles and imperiled species. Furthermore, evaporation and precipitation rates will also morph over time to match the changing of the seasons, further antagonizing severe weather patterns. In combination, all of these side effects of carbon emissions provide a bleak future for the earth and all of its inhabitants, and if these problems are not addressed properly we could all suffer the consequences for future generations to come. Research suggests that the harmful effects of carbon emissions must be addressed aggressively because many species are suffering in number as well as quality of life, weather patterns and rainfall are behaving more erratically, and the overall temperature of the earth continues to rise at an alarming rate. ...
