Examples Of Hybridity In The Bluest Eye
In the last season summer , Pecola becomes pregnant. Claudia and Frieda want Pecola s baby to live in
order to validate their own blackness and to oppose the universal love for white baby dolls. The anger
reaches Pecola to madness because Pauline also does not believe that Pecola is an innocent sinister of
Cholly s drunken rape. Pecola s schism has created an imaginary friend for her because she has no real
friend. Her imaginary friend represents an escape from reality as the researcher thinks. The researcher
shows that Pecola wants a person who will pay attention while she talks about her new blue eyes. Her
imagination that she obtains blue eyes recompense the horrible memory of the events in her life. This
well made plot exists from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her lunacy is not an escape from the idealized forms of white life, in her insanity, she feels most fully
the force of white constructions of beauty, even as the normal flow of human interaction and language
cease to have meaning for her. Morrison uses painful irony to remind people that Pecola s madness is
a fault of her society. Morrison is influenced by hybridity in her novel The Bluest Eye . Hybridity
refers to any mixing of western and eastern culture , it most commonly refers to colonial subjects from
Africa and Asia who have found the balance between eastern and western cultural attributes.
According to Homi Bhabha, the third place is the place for multicultural communities where injustice
and oppression are executed. Morrison proves that third place is a far place and no one can reach to
this place easily. She also proves that Pecola reaches to madness and could not reach to third place. In
addition to, Morrison is influenced by the idea of other and orientalism, otherness which is an
approach that divides the world into two binary opposites as white versus black or modern versus
traditional. Morrison manages to apply the four elements that involved the creation stereotyping which
are generalization, essentialization, oversimplification, and repetition. Morrison succeeded in showing
the fixed image for pecola s family that claims to reflect their reality without necessarily truly doing so

Youth Culture Is Saturated With Porn Essay
The main purpose for this essay is to discuss whether or not youth culture is saturated with porn? The
essay aims to highlight what youth culture is and how it can be affected? This will take into account a
number of sources, research including The Academy of Paediatrics and Colett (2014) in order to
establish a definition of what the term youth culture truly is. It will then discuss what porn is and how
it can affect a young person and finally how educators can approach such a sensitive topic. What is
youth culture? Youth culture is the way adolescents live their lives and the social normalities, values
and practices they share. Colette identifies that youth culture is not so easily defined and is rapidly
changing. This identifies an issue in itself that because of rapid change youth can find it difficult to
define them selves, who they are and what they want. There are many areas in society that affect youth
culture, these include: music and film, literature, social media, sexual attitudes, sub cultures, political
and commercial influences, and a constant battle to challenge traditions. In more recent years young
people are feeling more pressure by society in many ways but none so as high as sexual pressure. The
age people are beginning to have their first sexual experience is on a rapid decrease with some known
cases as young as 10, along side the amount of sexual promiscuity is on the increase. Television and
radio advertisement, movies and everyday music young people

Fishing Vs Canada Research Paper
I believe that fishing in Canada is much better than fishing in the United States. Through personal
experience, I have had better luck fishing in Canada than in the United States. Every year, my family
and I go on vacation to Senneterre in Quebec, Canada. It is about an eighteen hour drive to go fishing
at Parent Lake Lodge. We stay for about two weeks in a small cabin. It s made of wood and a tile roof.
We rent it from a married couple about sixty years old, Lisette and Rolan. It doesn t cost a lot of
money, about two thousand dollars, to stay there two and a half weeks. It is a very small, white, run
down cabin overlooking the lake. The view is gorgeous out of a cracked window. You see the deep,

get away or your gear could break. After a fish longer than five pounds is caught, it is taken to the
shore, measured, photographed, tagged, and then released back into the wild. After breakfast in the
morning, guests will be flown by helicopter to the Canyon where a guide in a jet boat will be waiting

Nightmare On Elm Street Movie Comparison Essay
Kaylin Brooks English 1010 October 6, 2017 Nightmare On Elm Street Remake VS. Original Me
being a total horror movie fanatic and with the remake craze taking the horror genre by storm, we all
compare the remake to the original while we re watching it. One of the most classic horror films of all
time, Nightmare on Elm Street, was originally made in 1984 and later got remade in 2010 after a slew
of sequels. When Nightmare on Elm Street got a remake, everyone at that time had split decisions
about the new movie. Me personally, I am not a big fan of remakes, but since I am such a fan of scary
movies, I went in with an open mind and actually liked it a lot. I have seen this movie hundreds of
time since the movie came out and my sentiments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They made Freddy look more human as opposed to the original, where the makeup was cartoonish and
devilish. In the original Freddy was completely red. Freddy is also known for the red and green striped
sweater and razor glove. The sweater is pretty much the same in both films, but the glove in the
remake is much more intricate, probably due to technology, in the remake. Even the sounds on the
gloves, when Freddy is rubbing his fingers together, are much sharper an realistic. In the 1984 classic,
Freddy was about psychologically attacking his victims. He liked to play off of his victim s fears and
when they went to sleep he would bring their fears into their nightmares resulting to their demise. But
in the remake, Freddy would attack his victims physically and in their dreams, he would constantly
remind them of how he died causing them to develop insomnia. Also making them have psychotic
breakdowns and killing themselves. In both films, Freddy Kruger preyed on the children of the parents
that killed him. The parents decided to kill him because they believed he was molesting their children
while he was working as a gardener at their children school. The parent burned him alive. That
storyline remained constant in both movies. His favorite target in both movies was Nancy. There were
some changes to Nancy in the remake, they changed her last name from Thompson to Holbrook. In
1984 Nancy was played by Heather Langenkamp and in 2010, Nancy was played by Rooney Mara.

Common Core State Standards Act
Common Core State Standards Common Core State Standards is being heard throughout the education
world. Many cringe when the words are spoken and many fight to support what the words stand for.
Common Core was introduced in 2009 by state leaders. Common Core State Standards were
developed to prepare children for the business world or the reality after grade school. The Common
Core is a set of high quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy,
also known as ELA (About the Standards, n.d.). The goals for the standards outline what students
should know before leaving his or her current grade level. The standards were created to ensure that
all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college,
career, and life, regardless of where they live (About the Standards, n.d.). This is an ambitious goal,
but with much support can be accomplished. According to Common Core State Standards Initiative
(n.d.) The Common Core has been adopted by forty two states already and is accompanied by District
of Columbia and Department of Defense Education Activity. Common Core was developed to
improve the academics in society s schools. Academics in the past years have not been successful and
the United States has fallen behind international education. One root cause has been an uneven
patchwork of academic standards that vary from state to state and do not agree on what students
should know and be able to do at each

Should Euthanasia or Physician Assisted Suicide Be Legal
Should Euthanasia or Physician Assisted Suicide be Legal? One day while interning at the Animal
Clinic of Bay Ridge I witnessed something so cruel. This middle aged shiatsu was dropped off at the
animal clinic. Mind you, the owners didn t even bother to come in the room with the dog. As I played
with the dog until he would be putdown I wondered why in the world someone would put such a
lovely dog down is unimaginable. Despite being sorry for the dog I feel euthanizing both animals and
human should be legal with exceptions. For instance, if an animal or human is really sick and cannot
stand the pain or is in a vegetated state I believe it is okay to euthanize. If the reason is that you don t

So another question is does this person who is encouraging euthanasia on their loved one have the
persons best interest in heart? And as they questions arise euthanasia is still illegal. In conclusion I
believe that euthanasia should be legalized. But as with anything else that the government grants it
should be taking under deep consideration. I believe that a person should file a request to administer
euthanasia then it should undergo an investigation and if the investigation comes out with all good
intentions go for it. Even for animals most people don t look at animals a living things but they are
too. If you have an animal and you really can t take care of it take it to a shelter. Or post up fliers or
post on the internet inquiring if anyone wants a pet. But with animals and humans there is always a
choice. If you re pet develops cancer it may be smart for you to euthanize your pet because surgeries
are extremely expensive and if you choose not to attain surgery for your pet it will suffer from
excruciating pain. Remember there is no pet chemotherapy. Also if someone you love is dying and
wishes not to become a vegetable for the rest of their lives you can put on their medical records in the
case of a bad event to put don t resuscitate . If an animal is sick and should be euthanized to not suffer

College Athletes Should Not Be Paid Essay
Amongst the controversy surrounding the NCAA s recent crackdown on violations with regards to
college programs compensating players and players accepting compensation from universities and
outside sources, one question has understandably been brought up. It is a question that was bound to
be asked sooner or later, and one without an obvious answer: should college athletes be paid? It is one
of the biggest, if not the biggest, question that surrounds the world of college sports. The answer, quite
simply put, is no. Allowing universities to pay students athletes to participate in sports would require a
complete overhaul of the NCAA rule book. At this stage, too many questions need to be answered:
how much would athletes get paid? Where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some schools also bring in considerably more money than others from their sports programs. Schools
like the University of Florida and the University of Alabama would have no problem using the money
brought in by football and basketball to pay all of their athletes (which would still be going against the
aforementioned sports ethics, but let s pretend for a little bit). That is all fine and dandy, but what
about smaller market schools like Bethune Cookman University and the University of Montana?
These schools bring in more than $50 million less than the previously mentioned schools. Not only
does this limit the amount of money these schools could use to spend on paying athletes, it puts them
at a great disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint. This is an extremely important piece of
information. Aside from the idea of maintaining amateurism, the entire reason that the NCAA has
rules against paying players and players accepting said compensation for play is to keep the recruiting
game fair. As nice as it would be, it would be nigh impossible to compensate athletes with the revenue
that they bring in, which further muddies the discussion on where money would even come from if
athletes were to be paid. Some people would say, raise tuition . To put it nicely, institutes of

World Revolution Vs. Soviet Policy
Initially the need for a world revolution dominated Bolshevik ideals to such an extent that foreign
policy in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was regarded as unnecessary. Soviet Policy
was dominated by conflicting ideologies; the Marxist ideological view, and the Commissariat s
traditional policy theory. By co operating with both mindsets, the Communist International, or
Comintern, was created in order to work towards global revolution. In 1922, under the control of
Vladimir Lenin, the Treaty of Rapallo was signed. This enabled both Germany and Russia to unite and
benefit from one another s trade and security, as well as providing each other with training aid and
weapon testing grounds. In 1926, the USSR signed another treaty with Germany, the Treaty of Berlin,
which promised that if either nation was at war with a third power, the other would remain neutral.
However, whilst ties between Germany and the USSR were being created Britain posed as an
unwanted burden to the Soviets as it renounced trade ties and diplomatic recognition of the communist
regime. During this, on Russia s Eastern border both China and Japan fought back against their Soviet
counterparts. By 1934, the Soviet Union had joined the League of Nations, a League put in place to
attempt to keep peace and relinquish violence within Europe. With the further rise of Germany s Adolf
Hitler, came the Nazi Soviet Non Aggression Pact, however the treaty did not last long.

A Long History Of Sexuality Is Conditioned And Inhibited...
How we think about sexuality is conditioned and inhibited by a complicated history and, to make our
problems worse, that history is in the power of those who have necessarily been antagonistic to
women for a very long time. Males generally have been economically and socially superior to women
since they became the primary producers and possessors of private property. (Murphy Robinson,
1984: 251)
One of Western societies biggest social taboos is sex. Even more so, there is a long history of
repressed female sexuality. The years of absent representation of overtly sexual women has affected
how they think and feel about their own sexuality, and allows them to be treated as a minority despite
the gender being half the population. The first Ann Summers retail store opened in 1970, and current
CEO Jacqueline Gold introduced the Party Plan in 1981. Presently, Ann Summers does well to help
empower women, and is ultimately positive in terms of female sexulity representation and discussion.
When Jacqueline Gold was appointed CEO in 1993, she was a key figure in turning the company s
reputation around to focus on women and what they want. As constructive as this is, there are
problems to the company s marketing, specifically when looking at the Ann Summers Party Plan.
Their approach can be considered heteronormative as a result of their phallocentric homosocial
atmosphere.
When thinking about the social taboos around female sexuality, there are many reasons for people to
believe

Foreign Aid From The United States
When I chose Brazil as the subject country for examining its foreign aid received, I ran into a bit of a
dilemma. Brazil has evolved from being a foreign aid recipient and less developed nation of the past,
to become a major foreign aid provider in recent years. This fact places this emerging country in a
unique and interesting position as both a donor and recipient as of 2010 records reveal and Brazil s
donor status is on the increase since this new middle of the road development status for this intriguing
country emerged.
Brazil s modern history includes 300 plus years of colonization by Portugal form 1500 to 1800, to the
establishment of its independent status in 1822. (2) Today, Brazil in its association with BRIC (Brazil,
Russia, India and China) bloc partnership, Brazil now distributes close to 4 billion dollars in annual
global aid to less developed nations around the world, especially in sub Saharan Africa. (4)
As a recipient of foreign aid, Brazil in 2012 received $2.4 million (US) in international humanitarian
aid. Also, during the period of 2003 to 2012, Brazil received $ 4.5 billion (US) in official development
assistance (ODA). (1) As a donor nation, Brazil contributed $1.3million (US) in humanitarian
assistance in 2013 and $54 million in that same category of international aid (US) in 2012. (1) Due to
global austerity, international foreign aid is on a constant decline around the globe. Some estimates

The Effect Of Unconventional Gas Expansion On Energy Economy
Section 8 9
8. Effect of Unconventional Gas Expansion on Energy Economy
8.1 Methodology
The expansion of the unconventional gas production exhibits a number of uncertainties with regards to
the natural gas overall supply balance which in turn has a great impact on the energy economy in
general. In order to understand this effect, one must start to look in to the
1. Difference in trading between the main sources of energy: oil and Natural gas and how this
expansion is going to affect these methods of trading either negatively or positively.
2. The cost of production from unconventional gas resources and the future expected changes due to
development in technology. Adding to that the expected amount of production in the future.

Asia uses crude oil as a benchmark for natural gas prices and favours long term contracts. Japan and
Korea almost totally dependent on imported LNG. This dependence places a high premium on
security of supply and has kept prices in Asia high relative to other regions (Suárez, 2012).
Despite the two different trading methods between gas and oil, historically it has been noticed that the
trend in energy cost of both is following the same trend ignoring the price difference based on trading
model between the three pre mentioned trading methods for Natural gas.
The fast recent development of production from unconventional gas resources mainly shale gas in
North America (United States and Canada) has interrupted this relationship.
Early in 21st century, North America was forecasted to require around 60 billion cubic feet/ year of
gas and since the resources at that time do not include the unconventional gas resources, this supply
was forecasted to be delivered from other countries including Qatar, Angola and Nigeria. A number of
export terminals were built on those countries. In addition, around 50 import terminals were planned
to be constructed in North America including Mexico, United States and Canada.

Circular Organisational Structure.. Standard Circular...
Circular Organisational Structure Standard circular organisational structure shows the business CEO
in the centre and all the key management and staff positions reporting directly to him/her. This is an
advantage as it means that if the CEO decides to make any modifications in the procedures of the
company, they have the power and choice to decide if they wish to inform all the appropriate people
who report to him because of his/her decision. However, it could also be a disadvantage on the CEOs
part because not everyone is on the same page in terms of coordinating what must be done to strive the
business forward.
A good way to overcome problems like this is to have a circular organisational structure where all

It is quite a centralised system with the majority of the decision making taking part at the top of the
business. This is definitely seen in the top 3 layers. We can deduct from the diagram that the decision
making is passed down the hierarchy with each layer having more people to command and this may
mean that information passed from the top may be tampered with or lost easily and this is a
disadvantage. Furthermore, it will be very hard for the manager of each department to keep track on
everything their employees are doing and this may lead to a fault somewhere in the system. There is a
lot of chance for promotion in the lower part of the structure but as you get higher and higher in the
ranks it becomes increasingly harder to get promoted due to smaller amount of management this also
makes the chain of command very long.
The Managing Director is presented at the top of this pyramid as he is at the top of the hierarchy and
has set the agenda for the business or in this case factory. There are 7 layers in this pyramid which
means information won t be passed around effectively and there are 6 below the MD and the first line

the Manufacturing Director as this is the key area of the automobiles. The second line consists

Mental Illnesses And Its Effects On Mental Illness
Mental illnesses are generally characterized by changes in mood, thought, or behavior. They can make
daily activities difficult and impair a person s ability to work, interact with family, and fulfill other
major life functions (SAMHSA, 2015). Contemplated early on in history, treatments for mental illness
looked to cure the reflections of the anger of gods, demonic possession, sorcery, the evil eye, or an
angry deity, responded with equally mystical, and brutal treatments (Nash, 2007). Attempts to treat
mental illness date back as early as 5000 BCE as verified by the discovery of trephined skulls in
regions of ancient world cultures (Porter, 2002, p. 10). Only a few realized that individuals with
mental illness should be treated humanely rather than exorcised, punished, or banished. Psychiatry has
come a long way since the days patients were shunned from society and shackled in asylums.
Experiments and techniques for treating mental illness from ancient times to the turn of the 20th
century have paved the way for the treatment plans used today.
The history of mental illness represents the ways in which trends in psychiatry and cultural
understanding of mental illness influence thoughts and attitudes towards mental health. The earliest
records of mental illness show that many cultures have viewed it as a form of religious punishment or
demonic possession. In ancient Egyptian, Indian, Greek, and Roman writings, mental illness was
categorized as a religious or personal

Role Of The Meatpacking Industry In Upton Sinclair s The...
The Jungle Book was a book written by Upton Sinclair in 1905 which discussed the meatpacking
industry. It exposed the industry as a dirty industry that was not very well regulated at all and that the
meat that they produced was often contaminated and could make individuals who ate it very ill. This
caused major outrage throughout America and in 1906 a meat inspection bill was passed by Congress
so that the meat industry could be regulated so individuals would not have to eat dirty meat like they
did before. This showed the power of the Progressive Era as a major flaw in regulations was shown in
1905 and just a year later there was major legislation passed which was there to regulate the industry
to protect the consumers. The Dawes Act was passed in 1890 with the intent of giving up tribal lands

Secret And Forbidden Love In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The...

Title
Nathaniel Hawthorne s book The Scarlet Letter is a story of secret and forbidden love as well as the
cause and effect of this forbidden love, the setting is a Puritan colony in Boston, Massachusetts around
1750. The main character Hester Prynne, a God fearing Puritan living within this community, gets
caught in the act of adultery when she is discovered to be with child whilst having no husband. During
this era, the punishment for adultery forced the adulteress or adulterer to wear a scarlet letter A upon
their bosom. While staying in prison, following the discovery of her sin, Hester gave birth to a
beautiful baby girl, which she named Pearl. Although some may choose to look upon pearl as a gift
from the devil, or as a rotten curse, Pearl grows to become a reflection of both individual and
collective human conscience, a personification of the scarlet letter, and a symbol of light. Pearl
represents a physical form of many character s consciences throughout the novel. For instance, she is
the voice of the collective conscience within her community when she points the crooked finger at
Hester in the forest. Everywhere Hester goes, Pearl must follow and so she is a constant reminder to
Hester that she must wear the scarlet letter at all times, while on their walk in Chapter 16, Pearl tells
her mother that the sunshine does not (274) love her and it runs away and hides itself (274)because it
is afraid of the letter. However, after Hester has cast off the letter A Pearl refuses to come to her. Pearl
often highlights and brings attention to Hester s scarlet letter by inquiring about its purpose, this shows
that while she may represent the conscience of those around her, she is still a little girl trying to
understand the world around her. Pearl is not only of manifestation of a community conscience but she
is most importantly a physical manifestation of Arthur Dimmesdale s conscience. She sees most
clearly his inner desires and she is attracted to him from the beginning. During their first encounter
when Pearl is still practically a newborn, she reaches for Dimmesdale, and while he notices he does

The Film Gangs Of New York
The film Gangs of New York, highlighted the facets of many different gangs; the most important
being the Natives and the Dead Rabbits. Both gangs vied for power over the region called the Five
Points during the Civil War time period. Within the film there were many different examples of social
stratification like class privilege, status, and power. The examples of stratification were shown by both
gangs and the individuals that the gangs were compromised of. The purpose of this paper is to analyze
these examples of social class and privilege, status, parties, and power, as described by Max Weber,
and how they exemplified in the film Gangs of New York. The examples of stratification in the film
similar to that of Weber s will show that the Gangs of New York represent the strife and problems that
come with a person s class, status, and party.
In Class, Status, Party, by Max Weber, Weber defines a class as any group of people that happen to be
facing the same class situations, or problems (Weber). Both of the two main gangs in the film, the
Natives, formally known as the Native Americans, and the Dead Rabbits, which is compromised of
the Irish Immigrants, were mostly a part of the same social class. There are many different ways that
classes in society can be stratified other than by just the basic three, upper class, middle class, and the
poor (Rothman). The characters in the Gangs of New York mostly belong to the working poor or
unemployed caste, because they have

Marketing has evolved and grown tremendously throughout the years. If you have a Facebook or
instagram page you have seen some sort of marketing promotion or ad that a local business is offering
to draw in customers or a following. For instance Z Burger, a burger joint in the DC area offered a
promotion that went viral through Facebook offering $2 burgers and $4 veggie burgers for the entire
day of last Tuesday at their Columbia Heights location. I attended myself thinking it was going to be
ridiculously crowded but I beat the rush and the staff created a system that provided a speedy service
and less wait time to order and receive your food.
That event was so popular through Facebook that they are offering a second location and if ... Show

To launch social media marketing campaigns, all businesses need to do is sign up for free with each
social network they want to use. Once registered, businesses can create individual profiles for their
business and start posting content, such as industry trends, company news and promotional
information right away. This phenomenon has only developed within the last decade, thus social
media research has largely focused on (1) defining what it is through the explanation of new
terminology and concepts that makeup its foundations, and (2) exploring the impact of a company s
integration of social media on consumer behavior. This paper begins with an explanation of
terminology that defines social media marketing, followed by a discussion of the four main themes
found within current research studies: Virtual Brand Communities, Consumers Attitudes and Motives,
User Generated Content, and Viral Advertising.
Although social media marketing is a well researched topic, it has only been studied through
experimental and theoretical research; studies never precisely describe the benefits retailers gain from
this marketing tactic. In reviewing the rich plethora of multi disciplinary literature, it is has become
clear that studies are focusing on describing what social media marketing is as well as examining what
factors affect consumer behavior relative to social networking. Despite the initial progress made by
researchers, development in this area of

Comparing Emerson s Writings with Whitman s Writings
Emerson and Whitman
A commonality when comparing Emerson s writings with Whitman s writings are the use of the ideas
Emerson came up with integrated and used in Whitman s writing. It is clear that Emerson s writing
were a set of instructions for the Transcendentalist movement in addition to a lifestyle to try and attain
or rise up to for society. Emerson give guidelines and ideas on how people should function in society
largely based off of nature and its natural occurrence and set order. When Whitman starts writing, he
adopts Emerson s guidelines in order to become a great poet. In Transcendentalism, one of the
commonalities in the writing is the idea of nature as a beneficial part of the world. The natural world
to be precise is an underused and not understood piece of the world. Emerson and Whitman both saw
nature as a beneficial topic to study in their writings. Emerson and Whitman both studied and reflected
upon nature in order to understand lessons or basic guidelines that it could teach them about being
human. In Self Reliance and Song of Myself, it can be seen that if you are willing to study nature and
gain the knowledge it gives you to live your life lessons can be gained. Nature is not simply pretty
scenery to look at but if studied deeper it promotes a lifestyle. Particularly, for Emerson, nature is seen
as perfect because it is not tainted by the constructs or failures of man it is simply natural and
untouched. In addition, man s law has no power over

Essay Salmonella and Enteritis or Systemic Diseases
Salmonella
Introduction
Salmonella is known as a gram negative, rod shaped bacillus. It is a facultative anaerobe in the family
Enterobacteriaceae (Todar). There are more than 1,000 known types of Salmonella, with ranging
levels of toxicity (Jones), accounting for 60% of all bacterial diseases (Curtello). Salmonellosis has
affected over 1.4 million people per year in the United States, including more than 500 fatal cases
(Jones). This organism has a wide host range with abilities to attack both animals and humans
(Tartakow). Salmonella s main habitat is in the intestinal tracts of warm blooded animals (Jones). It
best grows at a temperature between 5 and 47 degrees Celsius (Pui). Non host adapted Salmonella
may reside in food or water ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since it has such a long incubation period, this suggests that Salmonella typhimurium is able to avoid
detection by the host immune system early in the course of infection (Helene). The non host adapted
Salmonella cause very diverse typhoid like symptoms and is most common cause for foodborne
infections (Todar). Gastroenteritis is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, abdominal pain,
vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Diarrhea is a result of secretions of fluids by the small and large
intestines. These symptoms are caused by acute inflammatory responses given off by the bacteria
within the intestine (Giannella). In extreme cases S. typhimurium could affect respiratory, central
nervous or cardiovascular systems causing things like pneumonia and meningitis. The severity of
symptoms depends on the type, amount ingested, a person s age, and susceptibility to illnesses.
Elderly people and young children are the most vulnerable to symptoms of Salmonellosis. Symptoms
can begin to appear anywhere between six and forty eight hours and can last three days or even three
weeks.
Septicemia is another form of the manifestation of Salmonella in the body. This is known as the
intermediate stage of the infection and does not cause intestinal symptoms. Also, the bacteria are
unable to be eradicated from the fecal matter secreted by an infected host. The harshness of the
specific infection is dependent on the endurance of the patient

Admittedly, form, length and literary devices are not requisite to a poem, as many fine free verse
poems illustrate, but this poem does not compensate for its lack of structure by enhancing its other
aspects. In Mary Oliver s poem Morning, there are no devices aside from alliteration, yet Oliver s
poem is much more complex and interesting for other reasons. The imagery is more artistic, the words
more creative, the syntax more fluid. Oliver describes the linoleum, the wild words, and the
curvaceous response of the lightly leaping cat. The only adjectives Williams uses, delicious, sweet,
and cold, are so common as to have been rendered banal in every reader s mind. Rather than making
the ordinary appear extraordinary through the clarity and discreteness of his imagery, as the
Encyclopaedia Britannica asserts, Williams succeeds only in making the ordinary appear well,
ordinary.
In fact, the whole poem is rather dull. There is no intrigue, no unusual phrase which catches the
attention, no unexpected yet perfect images such as Emily Dickinson s idea of quartz contentment in
her poem After great pain, a formal feeling comes . One might argue that Dickinson s poem would
naturally be more weighty because she was discussing a great pain, yet it is neither the simplicity of
Williams poem nor the

Harvey Milk Informative Essay
If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door. This quote was said by a
man who took that very close to home. Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the U.S.,
said this quote in one of his personal recordings. Harvey Milk is an important figure in history because
of his ability to persevere and inspire all those who are a part of the LGBT community. Milk is
considered a hero because he refused to let his sexuality get in the way of his dreams and inspired
thousands to embrace their sexuality. Harvey Milk was born May 22, 1930 in Woodmere, New York.
He was a popular kid in his High School, and did many activities from football to opera. He knew he

Tropical Rainforest Essay
Tropical Rainforest Description After my research, I have found that the tropical rainforest is very
important because they help maintain global weather and rain patterns. Tropical rainforests are also
warm all year round, its temperature barely changes from day to night. The tropical rainforest is pretty
wet from all that rain and has high humidity. The vegetation in a rainforest is very green with very
different heights. There are three major layers of vegetation. The first and top layer is called the
canopy, it is made up of large trees , the second layer is the understory, it is made up of vines, smaller
trees, and ferns, the third and bottom layer is called the floor, it is covered with wet leaves and leaf
litter. Many famous mountains and rivers are found in the rainforest, such as, Mount Kilimanjaro,
Amazon river, and Angel Falls. Heavy vegetation causes the rain to take up to ten minutes to reach the
ground.

endangered animals include gorillas and bengal tigers. Gorillas are endangered because of destruction

tiger is endangered because of poaching. Since bengal tigers do not die easily from bullets poachers
would kill them with poisoned meats to cause the tiger a long and agonising death. There are also
endangered plants, such as the orchids and mangrove trees. The orchids are endangered because of
how beautiful they are and people just want to pick them. Mangrove trees are endangered because of

Hurricane Andrew Research Papers
The sound of the wind, that s what you never forget. The initial whisper. The growing mewing that
turns into a howl. Then they cry of glass shattering. The grumbling of a roof peeling apart , said Ana
Veciana Suarez, as she remembers one of the worst, fiercest, and most powerful storm to hit South
Florida, Hurricane Andrew. On August 24, 1992, Category 5 Hurricane Andrew came through and
devastated South Florida turning its full forces on Miami Dade county. The aftermath of this hurricane
was completely unbelievable and devastating, being that it was the most high priced storm ever
recorded in United States History. Rebuilding the community took several years and even after
everything was rebuilt, citizens of South Florida, would never forget Hurricane Andrew.

How Are Biddy And Estella Alike
Will Layton A Contrast in Characters Throughout the book Great Expectations, Biddy and Estella are
contrasted with Pip. Through this, Dickens is able to show Pip s flaws and advantages throughout the
book. Biddy and Estella are complete opposites for the most part and many of their traits are complete
opposites of each other. For instance, Biddy is kind and nice to Pip, but Estella bullies Pip and tells
him that he is not good enough for her. Biddy is very plain and simple and as Pip describes her as
common. (Dickens p.100) On the other hand, Estella is described to be very beautiful and extravagant.
These descriptions would make them exact opposites however the comparison does not stop there. It
is also said that Biddy is very smart and intelligent, which plays a big role in her character
development. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She teaches Pip everything that she knows and despite this he only uses her for what she has to offer

and why Biddy had a deep concern in everything I told her , I did not know then, though I think I
know now. (Dickens p.78) Another similarity with Pip and Biddy is that they are both Orphans
brought up by hand, this also puts them in the same class order however despite this Pip still tries to
get out of his low class no matter what and his drive for a little success is scary. This drive will almost
certainly be his downfall. Throughout the story Biddy and Estella are pretty much foils of each other
and Dickens uses this so that he can explain some of Pips behaviors, like his selfishness comes from
Estella and his kindness comes from Biddy, these two traits are opposites of each

Accolades In Beowulf
Heroes shouldn t seek accolades, heroes should stay humble and never be selfish; not doing so makes
you selfish and non heroic in every aspect possible. Risking your life for treasure isn t worth it, it s
also not what being a true hero is really about.
Definition of a hero summed into my own words a person who does selfless acts without thought of
reward. In the Story Of Beowulf all Beowulf wanted was accolades, because of that Beowulf died
selfishly instead of dying as a true hero. Living a more modest life as a hero gets you remembered no
matter what you did, Neil Armstrong was the first guy to step foot on the moon; even though he did
such a big thing or big leap for the future of the country he still lived a very humble life, thirty years
later he s still remembered like it happened yesterday. When you seek accolades you re the one losing,
Beowulf seeked accolades his whole life and he also lost his life fighting a dragon for some treasure,
that really wasn t worth it, it just doesn t make him a true hero, the dragon was not hurting anyone he
risked his life for the treasure and not the people which brings me back to my point you shouldn t seek
accolades because it does not make you the true hero, the real reward is the feeling of helping the
person in need or doing the extraordinary at the end of the day that s all that really matters. On the
other end of the scale heroes could seek accolades, they deserve the reward for saving

Telescreens are a computer screen which the Thought Police uses to survey the people as well as a
way for the Party to communicate information. Their placement is all over the entire state of Oceania
leaving no privacy for any of the Oceanian citizens. Winston says, Every sound you made was
overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized (Orwell 3). This shows the
telescreens allow constant surveillance, and even in the dark, it picks up ever sounds. Therefore, these
devices make it so that the Party knows what you are doing all the time. This also shows there is no
margin for error when it comes to the Party. Any disobedient gesture or act will be picked up the
telescreens. The Thought Police will arrest you if they pick up any sort of act or thought of action
against the Party. Even in the safety of your own home, you are really not safe at all. However there is
one thing the telscreen cannot pick up, He thought of the telescreen with its never sleeping ear.
Winston explains, They could spy upon you night and day, but if you kept your head you could still

Feminism In The Novel Herland
There are many different ways one may view a utopian society. While looking back in a historical
context of feminism, we may see feminism through a political aspect in a utopian society. The
connection between feminism and utopianism could be drastic if viewing in a historical context
because of the want of a perfect world which would include the equality of women. When reviewing
the novel Herland written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author demonstrates her strong views on
feminism throughout the novel in many different ways. Gilman addresses gender roles throughout her
novel to express her own views of feminism in the late first wave of the feminist movement. To
understand the novel Herland in a historical context one must understand the challenges women have
faced in the mid 1800 s including the aspects of motherhood, marriage and not having the opportunity
to work.
Motherhood has changed throughout the world especially in today s time. In the 20th century women
tend to juggle many different aspects besides motherhood such as a job, school and their own
responsibilities. In the novel Herland the men in the novel express motherhood differently than the
basic norms. The women in the novel are not only expressed as doing the normal duties of a mother
such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. In fact the women in the novel are shown
doing jobs a man would do. In the novel Gilman created her own utopian society where females were
superior and the roles

Military Deployment Has Affected The Family System
Throughout many years, military deployment has affected the family system. Especially young
children are effected by their parents shipping overseas since they are still are trying to figure out how
to cope without guidance during their development into adult years. In this particular study,
researchers examined adolescents between the ages of 12 18 to determine their thoughts about their
parents going into war. More specifically, researchers wanted to study the children s experiences with
ambiguous loss within their military families. Researchers hope to find ways in prevention and
intervention in order to reduce the feeling of uncertainty within adolescents. Sociologists determined
that the ambiguous loss theory provides explanation of the youth s responses from the study. If
children are uncertain of their parent s job entitlement then it helps with grieving, but may lead to
depression and effecting future relationship with others. When parental deployment occurs, family life
becomes a catastrophe since they are present for a short time. According to Boss, it is hard to set and
organize roles and responsibilities in a family setting when one or both supervisors are frequently
away. Another factor that was a part of the research was the Double ABC X framework, created by
McCubbin and Patterson. The letter A was commonly seen during the sample where parental
deployment and other stress factors, such as getting an A on a test, bothered the adolescent. In other
words,

Willy Loman In Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
Willy Loman is the main character, who struggles to differentiate between idealism and reality
situations among the events occurred through his time as a salesman. Throughout the play Death of a
Salesman, Miller portraits Willy as a well known salesman in Boston as the New England man yet, in
reality Willy appears to be merely a salesman in a firm. The play suggests Mr. Loman desires his
oldest son, Biff Loman, to become an ideal successful salesman, He could be big in no time yet Biff is
a farm worker traveling to harvest with low pay (Miller Act â… :1559). Willy persona interacts with Biff
intense arguments about Biff s life choices, though Willy contains a deep affection for Biff and wants
the best for him. Linda Loman is the ideal 1940s housewife, she loves her husband and takes care of
him. Mrs. Loman is constantly worried about her husband and tries to maintain the family together to
create the ideal household. She attempts to encourage Biff to reconnect with Willy by showing his
love and be kind to him, to affix their relationship as father and son as opposed to arguing every
encounter between them (Miller Act â…¡:1588). Linda s personality of kindness shows the strong
feminism of a mother to keep their family together, although her family is not as perfect as she
believes herself. Biff Loman is the oldest son of Willy and Linda Loman, farm worker, and the realist

Quality Management System For Coventry University Library
The `Know IT` (Knowledge intergration ) quality management system for coventry university library
Introduction
Higher education intuitions have always resisted total quality management, quality management
systems were perceived as incompatible with the academic culture. However, universities have
become market driven, so in order to compete on a global scale and attract international students, they
had to establish quality management systems to set themselves apart from the competition.
It has become explicit that students were choosing universities based on quality; this has a very
subjective definition as quality means different things to people.

Furthermore process improvement methodologies will be explored so the library can become an
organisation that strives for excellence.
Improvements and modifications to the previous quality management system proposed
Before we can design quality management system we must firstly assess the libraries standard of
quality, the previous quality management system that was designed for the library was extremely
vague and generic both in design and principles.
The Lanchester Library at Coventry University opened in September 2000; the aim of the library was
to accommodate changing customer needs. Their mission for the library was, to stay student focused
by offering quality information and services to support, teaching, learning and research.
These goals and aspirations were met for a while, however, is obvious the library is in a desperate
need for an effective quality management system as it seems to buckling under the pressures exerted
by the increased number of students. More than ever it needs to realign the system with student
requirements and ensure that it s actually delivering the services required by the users. The most
essential qualities to the users of the library are: the availability of resources, such as collaborative
work spaces, books, computers, helpful staff ect.

The anger reaches Pecola to madness because Pauline also does not believe that Pecola is an innocent sinister of Cholly s drunken rape. Pecola s schism has created an imaginary friend for her because she has no real friend. Her imaginary friend represents an escape from reality as the researcher thinks. Her lunacy is not an escape from the idealized forms of white life, in her insanity, she feels most fully the force of white constructions of beauty, even as the normal flow of human interaction and language cease to have meaning for her. Morrison uses painful irony to remind people that Pecola s madness is a fault of her society. Morrison is influenced by hybridity in her novel The Bluest Eye . Hybridity refers to any mixing of western and eastern culture , it most commonly refers to colonial subjects from Africa and Asia who have found the balance between eastern and western cultural attributes. According to Homi Bhabha, the third place is the place for multicultural communities where injustice and oppression are executed. Morrison proves that third place is a far place and no one can reach to this place easily. She also proves that Pecola reaches to madness and could not reach to third place. In addition to, Morrison is influenced by the idea of other and orientalism, otherness which is an approach that divides the world into two binary opposites as white versus black or modern versus traditional. Morrison manages to apply the four elements that involved the creation stereotyping which are generalization, essentialization, oversimplification, and repetition. Morrison succeeded in showing the fixed image for pecola s family that claims to reflect their reality without necessarily truly doing so as they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Youth Culture Is Saturated With Porn Essay The main purpose for this essay is to discuss whether or not youth culture is saturated with porn? The essay aims to highlight what youth culture is and how it can be affected? This will take into account a number of sources, research including The Academy of Paediatrics and Colett (2014) in order to establish a definition of what the term youth culture truly is. It will then discuss what porn is and how it can affect a young person and finally how educators can approach such a sensitive topic. What is youth culture? Youth culture is the way adolescents live their lives and the social normalities, values and practices they share. Colette identifies that youth culture is not so easily defined and is rapidly changing. This identifies an issue in itself that because of rapid change youth can find it difficult to define them selves, who they are and what they want. There are many areas in society that affect youth culture, these include: music and film, literature, social media, sexual attitudes, sub cultures, political and commercial influences, and a constant battle to challenge traditions. In more recent years young people are feeling more pressure by society in many ways but none so as high as sexual pressure. The age people are beginning to have their first sexual experience is on a rapid decrease with some known cases as young as 10, along side the amount of sexual promiscuity is on the increase. • 5. Fishing Vs Canada Research Paper I believe that fishing in Canada is much better than fishing in the United States. Through personal experience, I have had better luck fishing in Canada than in the United States. Every year, my family and I go on vacation to Senneterre in Quebec, Canada. It is about an eighteen hour drive to go fishing at Parent Lake Lodge. We stay for about two weeks in a small cabin. It s made of wood and a tile roof. We rent it from a married couple about sixty years old, Lisette and Rolan. It doesn t cost a lot of money, about two thousand dollars, to stay there two and a half weeks. It is a very small, white, run down cabin overlooking the lake. The view is gorgeous out of a cracked window. You see the deep, blue, glass like water with the sunset reflection ... • 6. Nightmare On Elm Street Movie Comparison Essay Kaylin Brooks English 1010 October 6, 2017 Nightmare On Elm Street Remake VS. Original Me being a total horror movie fanatic and with the remake craze taking the horror genre by storm, we all compare the remake to the original while we re watching it. One of the most classic horror films of all time, Nightmare on Elm Street, was originally made in 1984 and later got remade in 2010 after a slew of sequels. When Nightmare on Elm Street got a remake, everyone at that time had split decisions about the new movie. Me personally, I am not a big fan of remakes, but since I am such a fan of scary movies, I went in with an open mind and actually liked it a lot. I have seen this movie hundreds of time since the movie came out and my sentiments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They made Freddy look more human as opposed to the original, where the makeup was cartoonish and devilish. In the original Freddy was completely red. Freddy is also known for the red and green striped sweater and razor glove. The sweater is pretty much the same in both films, but the glove in the remake is much more intricate, probably due to technology, in the remake. Even the sounds on the gloves, when Freddy is rubbing his fingers together, are much sharper an realistic. In the 1984 classic, Freddy was about psychologically attacking his victims. He liked to play off of his victim s fears and when they went to sleep he would bring their fears into their nightmares resulting to their demise. But in the remake, Freddy would attack his victims physically and in their dreams, he would constantly remind them of how he died causing them to develop insomnia. Also making them have psychotic breakdowns and killing themselves. In both films, Freddy Kruger preyed on the children of the parents that killed him. The parents decided to kill him because they believed he was molesting their children while he was working as a gardener at their children school. The parent burned him alive. That storyline remained constant in both movies. His favorite target in both movies was Nancy. There were some changes to Nancy in the remake, they changed her last name from Thompson to Holbrook. In 1984 Nancy was played by Heather Langenkamp and in 2010, Nancy was played by Rooney Mara. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Common Core State Standards Act Common Core State Standards Common Core State Standards is being heard throughout the education world. Many cringe when the words are spoken and many fight to support what the words stand for. Common Core was introduced in 2009 by state leaders. Common Core State Standards were developed to prepare children for the business world or the reality after grade school. The Common Core is a set of high quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy, also known as ELA (About the Standards, n.d.). The goals for the standards outline what students should know before leaving his or her current grade level. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live (About the Standards, n.d.). This is an ambitious goal, but with much support can be accomplished. According to Common Core State Standards Initiative (n.d.) The Common Core has been adopted by forty two states already and is accompanied by District of Columbia and Department of Defense Education Activity. Common Core was developed to improve the academics in society s schools. Academics in the past years have not been successful and the United States has fallen behind international education. One root cause has been an uneven patchwork of academic standards that vary from state to state and do not agree on what students should know and be able to do at each ... • 8. Should Euthanasia or Physician Assisted Suicide Be Legal Should Euthanasia or Physician Assisted Suicide be Legal? One day while interning at the Animal Clinic of Bay Ridge I witnessed something so cruel. This middle aged shiatsu was dropped off at the animal clinic. Mind you, the owners didn t even bother to come in the room with the dog. • 9. College Athletes Should Not Be Paid Essay Amongst the controversy surrounding the NCAA s recent crackdown on violations with regards to college programs compensating players and players accepting compensation from universities and outside sources, one question has understandably been brought up. It is a question that was bound to be asked sooner or later, and one without an obvious answer: should college athletes be paid? It is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, question that surrounds the world of college sports. The answer, quite simply put, is no. Allowing universities to pay students athletes to participate in sports would require a complete overhaul of the NCAA rule book. At this stage, too many questions need to be answered: how much would athletes get paid? Where ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some schools also bring in considerably more money than others from their sports programs. Schools like the University of Florida and the University of Alabama would have no problem using the money brought in by football and basketball to pay all of their athletes (which would still be going against the aforementioned sports ethics, but let s pretend for a little bit). That is all fine and dandy, but what about smaller market schools like Bethune Cookman University and the University of Montana? These schools bring in more than $50 million less than the previously mentioned schools. Not only does this limit the amount of money these schools could use to spend on paying athletes, it puts them at a great disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint. This is an extremely important piece of information. Aside from the idea of maintaining amateurism, the entire reason that the NCAA has rules against paying players and players accepting said compensation for play is to keep the recruiting game fair. As nice as it would be, it would be nigh impossible to compensate athletes with the revenue that they bring in, which further muddies the discussion on where money would even come from if athletes were to be paid. Some people would say, raise tuition . To put it nicely, institutes of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Soviet Policy Initially the need for a world revolution dominated Bolshevik ideals to such an extent that foreign policy in the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was regarded as unnecessary. Soviet Policy was dominated by conflicting ideologies; the Marxist ideological view, and the Commissariat s traditional policy theory. By co operating with both mindsets, the Communist International, or Comintern, was created in order to work towards global revolution. In 1922, under the control of Vladimir Lenin, the Treaty of Rapallo was signed. This enabled both Germany and Russia to unite and benefit from one another s trade and security, as well as providing each other with training aid and weapon testing grounds. In 1926, the USSR signed another treaty with Germany, the Treaty of Berlin, which promised that if either nation was at war with a third power, the other would remain neutral. However, whilst ties between Germany and the USSR were being created Britain posed as an unwanted burden to the Soviets as it renounced trade ties and diplomatic recognition of the communist regime. During this, on Russia s Eastern border both China and Japan fought back against their Soviet counterparts. By 1934, the Soviet Union had joined the League of Nations, a League put in place to attempt to keep peace and relinquish violence within Europe. How we think about sexuality is conditioned and inhibited by a complicated history and, to make our problems worse, that history is in the power of those who have necessarily been antagonistic to women for a very long time. Males generally have been economically and socially superior to women since they became the primary producers and possessors of private property. (Murphy Robinson, 1984: 251) One of Western societies biggest social taboos is sex. Even more so, there is a long history of repressed female sexuality. The years of absent representation of overtly sexual women has affected how they think and feel about their own sexuality, and allows them to be treated as a minority despite the gender being half the population. The first Ann Summers retail store opened in 1970, and current CEO Jacqueline Gold introduced the Party Plan in 1981. Presently, Ann Summers does well to help empower women, and is ultimately positive in terms of female sexulity representation and discussion. When Jacqueline Gold was appointed CEO in 1993, she was a key figure in turning the company s reputation around to focus on women and what they want. As constructive as this is, there are problems to the company s marketing, specifically when looking at the Ann Summers Party Plan. Their approach can be considered heteronormative as a result of their phallocentric homosocial atmosphere. Effect of Unconventional Gas Expansion on Energy Economy 8.1 Methodology The expansion of the unconventional gas production exhibits a number of uncertainties with regards to the natural gas overall supply balance which in turn has a great impact on the energy economy in general. In order to understand this effect, one must start to look in to the 1. Difference in trading between the main sources of energy: oil and Natural gas and how this expansion is going to affect these methods of trading either negatively or positively. 2. The cost of production from unconventional gas resources and the future expected changes due to development in technology. Adding to that the expected amount of production in the future. Giving ... This dependence places a high premium on security of supply and has kept prices in Asia high relative to other regions (Suárez, 2012). Despite the two different trading methods between gas and oil, historically it has been noticed that the trend in energy cost of both is following the same trend ignoring the price difference based on trading model between the three pre mentioned trading methods for Natural gas. The fast recent development of production from unconventional gas resources mainly shale gas in North America (United States and Canada) has interrupted this relationship. Early in 21st century, North America was forecasted to require around 60 billion cubic feet/ year of gas and since the resources at that time do not include the unconventional gas resources, this supply was forecasted to be delivered from other countries including Qatar, Angola and Nigeria. • 16. Mental Illnesses And Its Effects On Mental Illness Mental illnesses are generally characterized by changes in mood, thought, or behavior. They can make daily activities difficult and impair a person s ability to work, interact with family, and fulfill other major life functions (SAMHSA, 2015). Contemplated early on in history, treatments for mental illness looked to cure the reflections of the anger of gods, demonic possession, sorcery, the evil eye, or an angry deity, responded with equally mystical, and brutal treatments (Nash, 2007). Attempts to treat mental illness date back as early as 5000 BCE as verified by the discovery of trephined skulls in regions of ancient world cultures (Porter, 2002, p. 10). Only a few realized that individuals with mental illness should be treated humanely rather than exorcised, punished, or banished. Psychiatry has come a long way since the days patients were shunned from society and shackled in asylums. Experiments and techniques for treating mental illness from ancient times to the turn of the 20th century have paved the way for the treatment plans used today. The history of mental illness represents the ways in which trends in psychiatry and cultural understanding of mental illness influence thoughts and attitudes towards mental health. The earliest records of mental illness show that many cultures have viewed it as a form of religious punishment or demonic possession. • 18. Secret And Forbidden Love In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The... Jordan Hendrickson Mr. Foster AP English 11 2nd period December 15, 2017 Title Nathaniel Hawthorne s book The Scarlet Letter is a story of secret and forbidden love as well as the cause and effect of this forbidden love, the setting is a Puritan colony in Boston, Massachusetts around 1750. The main character Hester Prynne, a God fearing Puritan living within this community, gets caught in the act of adultery when she is discovered to be with child whilst having no husband. During this era, the punishment for adultery forced the adulteress or adulterer to wear a scarlet letter A upon their bosom. While staying in prison, following the discovery of her sin, Hester gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, which she named Pearl. Although some may choose to look upon pearl as a gift from the devil, or as a rotten curse, Pearl grows to become a reflection of both individual and collective human conscience, a personification of the scarlet letter, and a symbol of light. Pearl represents a physical form of many character s consciences throughout the novel. For instance, she is the voice of the collective conscience within her community when she points the crooked finger at Hester in the forest. Everywhere Hester goes, Pearl must follow and so she is a constant reminder to Hester that she must wear the scarlet letter at all times, while on their walk in Chapter 16, Pearl tells her mother that the sunshine does not (274) love her and it runs away and hides itself (274)because it is afraid of the letter. However, after Hester has cast off the letter A Pearl refuses to come to her. Pearl often highlights and brings attention to Hester s scarlet letter by inquiring about its purpose, this shows that while she may represent the conscience of those around her, she is still a little girl trying to understand the world around her. Pearl is not only of manifestation of a community conscience but she is most importantly a physical manifestation of Arthur Dimmesdale s conscience. She sees most clearly his inner desires and she is attracted to him from the beginning. Both gangs vied for power over the region called the Five Points during the Civil War time period. Within the film there were many different examples of social stratification like class privilege, status, and power. The examples of stratification were shown by both gangs and the individuals that the gangs were compromised of. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these examples of social class and privilege, status, parties, and power, as described by Max Weber, and how they exemplified in the film Gangs of New York. The examples of stratification in the film similar to that of Weber s will show that the Gangs of New York represent the strife and problems that come with a person s class, status, and party. • 22. Comparing Emerson s Writings with Whitman s Writings Emerson and Whitman A commonality when comparing Emerson s writings with Whitman s writings are the use of the ideas Emerson came up with integrated and used in Whitman s writing. It is clear that Emerson s writing were a set of instructions for the Transcendentalist movement in addition to a lifestyle to try and attain or rise up to for society. Emerson give guidelines and ideas on how people should function in society largely based off of nature and its natural occurrence and set order. When Whitman starts writing, he adopts Emerson s guidelines in order to become a great poet. In Transcendentalism, one of the commonalities in the writing is the idea of nature as a beneficial part of the world. The natural world to be precise is an underused and not understood piece of the world. Emerson and Whitman both saw nature as a beneficial topic to study in their writings. Emerson and Whitman both studied and reflected upon nature in order to understand lessons or basic guidelines that it could teach them about being human. In Self Reliance and Song of Myself, it can be seen that if you are willing to study nature and gain the knowledge it gives you to live your life lessons can be gained. Nature is not simply pretty scenery to look at but if studied deeper it promotes a lifestyle. Particularly, for Emerson, nature is seen as perfect because it is not tainted by the constructs or failures of man it is simply natural and untouched. In addition, man s law has no power over ... Gastroenteritis is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Diarrhea is a result of secretions of fluids by the small and large intestines. • 29. How Are Biddy And Estella Alike Will Layton A Contrast in Characters Throughout the book Great Expectations, Biddy and Estella are contrasted with Pip. Through this, Dickens is able to show Pip s flaws and advantages throughout the book. Biddy and Estella are complete opposites for the most part and many of their traits are complete opposites of each other. For instance, Biddy is kind and nice to Pip, but Estella bullies Pip and tells him that he is not good enough for her. Biddy is very plain and simple and as Pip describes her as common. (Dickens p.100) On the other hand, Estella is described to be very beautiful and extravagant. These descriptions would make them exact opposites however the comparison does not stop there. It is also said that Biddy is very smart and intelligent, which plays a big role in her character development. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She teaches Pip everything that she knows and despite this he only uses her for what she has to offer and nothing more, which is very selfish which is trait possessed by Pip and Estella. I reposed complete confidence in no one but Biddy; but, I told poor Biddy everything. Why it came natural to me to do so, and why Biddy had a deep concern in everything I told her , I did not know then, though I think I know now. (Dickens p.78) Another similarity with Pip and Biddy is that they are both Orphans brought up by hand, this also puts them in the same class order however despite this Pip still tries to get out of his low class no matter what and his drive for a little success is scary. This drive will almost certainly be his downfall. Throughout the story Biddy and Estella are pretty much foils of each other and Dickens uses this so that he can explain some of Pips behaviors, like his selfishness comes from Estella and his kindness comes from Biddy, these two traits are opposites of each ... • 32. Accolades In Beowulf Heroes shouldn t seek accolades, heroes should stay humble and never be selfish; not doing so makes you selfish and non heroic in every aspect possible. Risking your life for treasure isn t worth it, it s also not what being a true hero is really about. Definition of a hero summed into my own words a person who does selfless acts without thought of reward. In the Story Of Beowulf all Beowulf wanted was accolades, because of that Beowulf died selfishly instead of dying as a true hero. Living a more modest life as a hero gets you remembered no matter what you did, Neil Armstrong was the first guy to step foot on the moon; even though he did such a big thing or big leap for the future of the country he still lived a very humble life, thirty years later he s still remembered like it happened yesterday. When you seek accolades you re the one losing, Beowulf seeked accolades his whole life and he also lost his life fighting a dragon for some treasure, that really wasn t worth it, it just doesn t make him a true hero, the dragon was not hurting anyone he risked his life for the treasure and not the people which brings me back to my point you shouldn t seek accolades because it does not make you the true hero, the real reward is the feeling of helping the person in need or doing the extraordinary at the end of the day that s all that really matters. On the other end of the scale heroes could seek accolades, they deserve the reward for saving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Feminism In The Novel Herland There are many different ways one may view a utopian society. While looking back in a historical context of feminism, we may see feminism through a political aspect in a utopian society. The connection between feminism and utopianism could be drastic if viewing in a historical context because of the want of a perfect world which would include the equality of women. When reviewing the novel Herland written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author demonstrates her strong views on feminism throughout the novel in many different ways. Gilman addresses gender roles throughout her novel to express her own views of feminism in the late first wave of the feminist movement. To understand the novel Herland in a historical context one must understand the challenges women have faced in the mid 1800 s including the aspects of motherhood, marriage and not having the opportunity to work. Motherhood has changed throughout the world especially in today s time. In the 20th century women tend to juggle many different aspects besides motherhood such as a job, school and their own responsibilities. In the novel Herland the men in the novel express motherhood differently than the basic norms. The women in the novel are not only expressed as doing the normal duties of a mother such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. In fact the women in the novel are shown doing jobs a man would do. In the novel Gilman created her own utopian society where females were superior and the roles ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Military Deployment Has Affected The Family System Throughout many years, military deployment has affected the family system. Especially young children are effected by their parents shipping overseas since they are still are trying to figure out how to cope without guidance during their development into adult years. In this particular study, researchers examined adolescents between the ages of 12 18 to determine their thoughts about their parents going into war. More specifically, researchers wanted to study the children s experiences with ambiguous loss within their military families. Researchers hope to find ways in prevention and intervention in order to reduce the feeling of uncertainty within adolescents. Sociologists determined that the ambiguous loss theory provides explanation of the youth s responses from the study. If children are uncertain of their parent s job entitlement then it helps with grieving, but may lead to depression and effecting future relationship with others. When parental deployment occurs, family life becomes a catastrophe since they are present for a short time. According to Boss, it is hard to set and organize roles and responsibilities in a family setting when one or both supervisors are frequently away. Another factor that was a part of the research was the Double ABC X framework, created by McCubbin and Patterson. The letter A was commonly seen during the sample where parental deployment and other stress factors, such as getting an A on a test, bothered the adolescent. In other words, ...
