Skin Fold Method Essay
Potential sources of measurement error can occur while using the skin fold method if the person that is
administrating the test has not had significant amount of practice. Taking skin fold measurements
requires specific training. Without training, it is complicated to obtain consistent accurate skin fold
measurements. To reduce error while using the skin fold method, it is important to have a good quality
skin fold caliper. Good quality calipers should deliver a specific amount of force and this can be
assured by the manufacturer of the caliper. he easiest skin fold site to measure was the abdominal area.
Typically, most people have a greater amount of fat in this area, therefore, it was easier to grab and
measure. The thigh is the most difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Certain areas of measurements was harder to take than other areas because of it s angle. It was harder
to take skin fold measurements on a participant who did not have much fat on their body. It was also
difficult to take measurements when the participant was in multiple layers of clothes. The potential
sources of error when measuring circumferences and skeletal diameters can occur if the administrator
does not properly measure the specific areas. Measuring too high or too low of a certain area can skew
accuracy. It is also important for the administrator to remember to stand on the right side of the
participant. Not accurately reading the measuring tape can result in error. For example, reading inches
instead of centimeters would cause error. For my skin fold measurements, body fat percentage was
between twenty five and thirty five percent. For BIA, my body fat percentage for sitting was twenty
two percent, standing with straight arms was twenty one percent, and standing with bent arms at
seventeen percent. The measurements may have been different since the SKF was taken by a person
and BIA through a machine. Although the results were not completely off, it was off by a few

Disabilities Education Act
Up until age 21, children with disabilities are covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act (IDEA), which was first enacted in 1975 and most recently revised in 2004. IDEA mandates that
every state provides children with disabilities a free public education that meets their individual and
unique needs (Autism speaks toolkit, 2015). Many families with children with ASD have spent years
navigating the school system in order to maximize their child s potential under this Act. Children with
ASD can receive various services included special education, speech language therapy, occupational
therapy, or mental health counseling. When the school years are over, many adolescents may lose
these support services that they have become ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This requires the students with ASD to learn independence in order for them to succeed. While sparse,
there are colleges and universities that are skilled at providing accommodations for students with
ASD. Unfortunately, students with ASD have decreased graduation and employment rates, and they
are more likely to develop mental health disorders during their college years when compared with
other students with disabilities (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). Challenges the students with ASD will
face in college include organizational and time management difficulties, lacking self advocacy skills,
sensory overload, and problems meeting academic demands (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). It is
important for a primary care provider to provide anticipatory guidance to the adolescent and their
family of what to expect of postsecondary school if that is what they choose for the next step.
A recent study investigated the challenges and support needs of students with ASD in postsecondary
education (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). The first challenge the researchers found were that the
students with ASD struggled with the new situations and unexpected changes in college. These
students found it very difficult to oversee the large amount of new information and choices they had to
make. They are leaving behind what is familiar and transitioning into something completely new,

Social Conformity In The Fountainhead, By Ayn Rand
In a world plagued by the infinite expansion of corruptness, human beings are tainted by the natural
tendency to succumb to the horrors of social conformity. This social conditioning is the source of all
challenges that individuals are faced with in life. In the masterpiece The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand,
the protagonist Howard Roark is considered to be a moral ideal that others must attempt to mirror. In
the midst of unimaginable distress and agony, Roark remains valiant and never ceases to remain true
to himself. Rand considered this trait to be one in which society should abide by a quality of
stubbornness to shuffle into the river of social acceptance. While many regard Roark to be an
outstanding role model, to imitate his ideals would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Howard Roark has a unique way of living his life, based on objectivism, attempting to emulate
this behavior is a paradox upon itself. Roark does not wish to be the symbol of anything. [He s] only
[himself] (602). While creating a character who is a moral ideal to emulate might have been what Ayn
Rand wished while writing The Fountainhead, she is contacting the very beliefs that Roark abides by.
Roark is a man of honor and dignity a man who would never turn his back on his morals. The most
important rule of Roark s philosophy is to be able to stand by one s beliefs. If an individual attempts to
emulate Roark s morals, then he/she is breaking the fundamental concept of objectivism. As stated in
plain text by Roark, reason can be fought with reason (346). While the reasoning behind emulating
Roark s behavior may be valid, it is impossible for one to do so without disgracing the objectivistic
lifestyle. While Howard Roark is an exceptional character in literature that has made a profound mark
on the advancement of human growth, who is to say that the polar opposite of Roark could not also be
considered a moral ideal ? In the eyes of Walt Whitman, whatever satisfies the soul is

Breaking Down Doors
Breaking Down Doors No single person opened as many doors as Jackie Robinson. The greatest
athletes of all time would have never been anything if it were not for his journey. Jackie broke the
color barrier in professional sports, up until the time that he played in there were only white males
were playing professionally. If it is even possible, try and imagine a world with no Michael Jordan, no
Barry Sanders, or no Barry Bonds. They were all arguably the greatest in their respective sports, if not

According to Rubie Obias, a writer for a magazine, Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born January 31,
1919 in Georgia (2012). But later his family would end up moving to California. He had four siblings,
Edgar, Frank, Matthew Mack, and Willa Mae Robinson (Obias, 2012). He later married his wife, who
he met while he was in college. He would have three kids, Jackie Jr., Sharron, and David Robinson

is where Jackie would gain his constant competitive spirit. When someone is never as good as their
older sibling that they look up too, it is one of the hardest things to handle. They always want to be
just as good as them, and never be known as their little brother . In the summer Olympics in 1932,

having two girlfriends at the same time. The older people in town see him as a ladies man and

since then. He grows up to become a nerdy, fat, and awkward adolescence with few friends and even
less interest from girls. This phase persists throughout his life and he never develops out of the nerdy

Pushing The Herd Off The Cliff Edge
Introduction
The idea of institutional herding has a striking implication for security price volatility. Estimations
from the essay Sending the Herd Off the Cliff Edge suggests that the predominance of herding
behavior may explain why the financial system in 1990s had been in crisis for 40 out of the 120
months or 33% of the time (Persaud, 2000). These concerns, along with the increasing stock market
ownership of institution investor in comparison to individual investors, is often used as a basis for
advocating for an increase in monitoring institutional trading in equity markets in hopes that it that
would lead to a reduction in the dominance of institutional investors in the financial market. However
such claims are not fully supported by empirical research in the literature. Two schools of thoughts
emerge the first being that herding enhances pricing efficiency, and second ascertains that herding
initiates short term trend reversals.
The emergence of two seemingly polar opposite beliefs is not as a result of lack of scholarly
competence but rather due to the nature of complexity within the subject leading to conflicts in
assumptions and methodology. Conflicts in assumptions and methodology often arise due to rational
definitional irregularities on institutional herding. An example of such a definitional irregularity
occurs when as Avery defined herd behavior as a trade by an informed agent which follows the trend
in past trades even though that trend is counter to his

Mythology in Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were...
Mythology is a key part of many of Zora Neale Hurston s short stories and novels. She researched the
stories of her home town and many other areas of the world. Hurston used this knowledge of myths
and stories to help her carry them on to later generations in a form that almost everybody could relate
to. Through out all of Zora Neale Hurston s stories, mythology has been a crucial keystone. Her novel,
Their Eyes Were Watching God, has been influenced by three different ancient myths: the myths of
Ezili Freda, Osiris and Isis, and Aphrodite and Adonis.
Janie s love for nature and turbulent relationships comes from the myth of the Haitian Goddess of
love, Ezili Freda. In the novel the main character, Janie, is deeply interested in love and ... Show more

But this relationship is cut short by Adonis getting attacked and castrated by a wild boar (Stine). Later,
Adonis bled to death (Stine). After her first three husbands Janie finally found a man she could be
with, Tea Cake. And going along with the myth of Aphrodite and Adonis, Janie must stand by and
watch as Tea Cake is attacked by an animal which in Hurston s story was a dog. She ends up having to
kill him and watch him die as did Aphrodite with Adonis.
One of the largest mythological influences on Their Eyes Were Watching God is the myth of Isis and
Osiris. Ishtar is a goddess associated with love and was very callous with the men that she loved.
(Pondrom 181). Ishtar fell in love with a God by the name of Tammuz and eventually ended up being
responsible for his death (Pondrom 181). She descended into the underworld and was successful in
bringing him back and she lived at peace (Pondrom 181). We see strong parallels to this myth in Their
Eyes Were Watching God. After multiple loveless relationships Janie fell in love with Tea Cake. She
eventually had to kill him because he had rabies. Later, she was able to restore him to her memory,
bringing her peace. Isis and Osiris were in love, but this relationship did not last long once Osiris was
killed (Pondrom 181). Osiris body was sent out on a ship and Isis goes to retrieve the body and is able
to partially restore him (Pondrom 181). Again, a myth with Isis losing her love and being able to
restore them

Analysis of the Photography of The Fallen Man Essay
We ve all heard the phrase A picture is worth a thousand words. It s the mere fact that an idea can be
conveyed with just one single image. We come across tons of unfiltered images everyday, whether we
see them in newspapers or magazines. These images move us, they have an impact on some of us,
deep to our core. When a photograph directly impacts an individual, one will recount an image long
after they have seen it. The photograph that is forever imprinted in my mind is the image The Falling
Man, from The New York Times, a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It is a photo

you can see in the portrait behind him, is the Twin Tower seconds from burning down and completely
collapsing. When analyzing this photograph it seems like the falling man has accepted his fate. One
can look at this photo ten years or even hundred years from now, and still encapsulate the horror, and
pain, that American people endured on September 11, 2011. As much as I want to wipe this image

me back to the phone called I received that day from my best friend. She told me her father had left

Also, going to college or to a university increases the likelihood of receiving a well paying job, which
is why most students attend college in the first place (Learn Liberty).
Students have obviously realized the increasing tuition and have taken action on how to prevent their
wallets being emptied. Although some young people want to attend a traditional 4 year university and
have the full college experience, some students have the option of attending a community college
which substantially has a much lower tuition price than universities. If a student plans ahead their

Along with this, universities also have taken the action to help students not go into debt after college.
Universities have the option of reducing administrative staff. One of the drawbacks of reducing the
amount of staff is that there are now more students to teacher ratio meaning larger classes due to a

American Revolution And Religion
The Revolutionary period had much more substance to it than meets the eye. Although it is often
looked at as just Americans creating the United States of America, that is not the only perspective that
should be taken away from the American Revolution. It should be recognized more as Englishmen, as
Anglo Protestants, getting away from England. There are numerous diverse perspectives and events
that shaped the American Revolution. Some of the most imperative instances are Religion, Anglo
Americans, the Intolerable Acts and taxes, and the role of the Tories.
One of the most overlooked perspective of the popular view has to do with religion. The eighteenth
century colonists had a plethora of options to choose from when it came to religion. Many ... Show

These people were called Tories. Tories, also known as loyalists, were colonists that stayed faithful to
Britain during the Revolutionary War. They consisted of royal officials, wealthy merchants,
conservative urban lawyers, people who disliked pro revolution citizens, southern slaves who looked
to Britain in hope of freedom, and a multitude of Indian tribes. Contrary to popular view, one could
argue that the American Revolution was not only a fight between the Patriots and the British, but it
was really a civil war between the Rebels and the Tories. The fight between the Rebels and the Tories
can be described as brutal because of the guerilla warfare, brigade war, tarring and feathering, and
killings that were exhibited between the two sides. According to Tories: Fighting For the King in
America s First Civil War, General Nathanael Greene stated, The division among the people is much
greater than I imagined and the Whigs and Tories persecute each other, with little less than savage
fury. There is nothing but murders and devastation in every quarter. (Thomas Allen p. 1). The Tories
main concern was stability, which the British could provide to them unlike the rebels. Many times, this
would divide families because they would disagree on whether they wanted to be a Tory or a Rebel.
Additionally, if they decided to ultimately be a Tory, they would join the British army to fight against
the Patriots or flee to Canada or back to England. Although their role in the American Revolution was
to support the British, even with the Tories help, the British were still

The Period Of The Antebellum South
The period of the antebellum south was among the most burdensome times for African American
slaves, especially females. During the early 1800s the lives of enslaved women were extremely
demanding. The female slaves were expected to bear children, as well as were required to work just as
hard as the male slaves on the plantation. Days were long and laborious for slave mothers, they had to
make sure that all the work that needed to be done was completed, and also care for their children.
Female slaves jobs varied from housework, to field work. Slave mothers knew that giving up on their
work was not an option, they had to persevere for their families. Motherhood and work went hand in
hand for female slaves, one was not able to do one and not the other. Field labor was an unavoidable
task that was fulfilled by nearly all slaves in the antebellum south. There was no gender discrimination
in the fields, female slaves had to perform almost all of the plantation chores. Some of the chores
female slaves were obligated to complete were picking, hoeing, plowing, mending fences, burning
fields, weeding, planting, and harvesting. The work day was long and grueling, slaves worked from
sunrise to the sunset. Working the fields was a strenuous job, however it was not done alone. They
acquired the opportunity to work beside other female slaves. The groups of female slaves in the fields
were called gangs. The gangs often sang, talked quietly, and passed along confidential information.

the blood back into the patient. Sadly, the first 15 patients only survived a couple days off the machine
that introduced hemodylsis. Kolff wasn t discouraged by this; it only stimulated him to prolong patient
s lives longer.
Determined by overstepping so many boundaries already, Kolff improved his hemodylsis machine and
was ready to defeat renal kidney failure once again. In 1945, a disliked Nazi woman was in need of
hemodylis treatment (Academy of Achievement, n.d.). Although many people wanted Kolff to let her
die, he did all he could as a doctor. Ultimately, Kolff s hemodylsis machine saved her life. Wanting to
help others in need, Kolff shipped his hemodylsis machines to the United States, and also to Canada.
In 1946 Kolff completed his postgraduate studies at Groningen and received a P.h.D in medicine
(Pegels, 2010). Accomplishing so many things, many physicians and researchers took great interest in
Kolff. He was then invited to join the research staff of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the United
States (Academy of Achievement, n.d.). Accepting this invitation he became an American citizen in
1956. While at the Cleveland Clinic, Kolff started to study the cardiovascular system and developed
one of the first heart apparatuses. This development

Persuasive Essay On Marijuana
The United States was once a country that enslaved African American people because of their skin
color. America has progressed significantly since slavery was abolished over 150 years ago; however,
there are still significant differences the land of the free continues to make between races in. As Martin
Luther King, Jr. once said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Across the country,
minorities, specifically African Americans, are being unfairly targeted and arrested for marijuana
related crimes compared to Caucasians. The state must stand up against this and propose a change in
the strict laws surrounding marijuana, or also known as cannabis.
The disparities in arrest rates are caused by the bias and generalizations law enforcement and society
have towards minorities. This disproportionality is proven based off arrest data gathered from different
states, counties, and cities ( The war on marijuana in black and white, 2013). The discrepancy in
apprehensions involving cannabis has become a noteworthy social problem that has led to some states
already implementing and adopting new policies on marijuana use. The ultimate goal is for Texas to
pass a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, Texas can adopt plan in place similar to that of
the other five states that have already allowed the private consumption of marijuana.
The state of Texas was the second highest state for marijuana arrest; the number of arrests grew over

How Is Creon A Foil Character
The play Antigone, written by Sophocles, is a tragedy about Antigone, who defies the king s order of
her brother s burial after. She shows her strength by using morality and the laws from the gods, not

wanted to just do what is open minded. However, characters like Haemon, acts as a foil character to

Essay about And He Shall Smite the Wicked
If there is one message that most fairy tales have, it is that good will always triumph over evil. That is
also prevalent in the dark tale from the Brothers Grimm, The Juniper Tree . A story full of cannibalism
and homicide still manages to lead up to an iconic happy ending. Interwoven through every ironic
sentence are symbols. Connections with tales from Greek Mythology to Biblical times hide the true
macabre nature of the story of (as it is also called) My Mother Slew Me, My Father Ate Me . The very
first line of the fable, Long, long ago, some two thousand years or so , is an allusion itself dating back

The stepmother mimics this act almost to a tee. After beheading her stepson with the lid of an apple
chest and tricking her daughter to re knock off his head, she and her daughter (against her will) chop
him up and cook him into puddings. They then share a meal together, father included, feasting on the
child s remains. This sociopathic and remorseless act also reflects upon Kronos character traits.
Unforgiving, unyielding, and controlling, he (as the mother does) sets his downfall up through the
desire for power. And she, as Kronos did, found her death through the cunning of the person she was
desiring to control. Kronos wanted to remain the Lord of the universe eternally, and he was told that
his children would overpower him. The Stepmother feared that her stepson would inherit more than
her daughter would, therefor overpowering her. Both Kronos and the Stepmother act the same way,
and eat their offspring. But, in Kronos case, he eats a blanket full of rocks instead of Zeus (all part of
Zeus plan) and becomes sick. With the Stepmother, she hears birdsong and feels sick, as if a heavy
thunderstorm were coming...so full of distress and uneasiness...as if there were a fire in [her] veins .
Her stepson s sickly sweet birdsong is the treachery with which he resembles Zeus. After Kronos

The Irish Potato Famine and Emigration Essay
The Irish Potato Famine and Emigration
During the Victorian era, England experienced tremendous growth in wealth and industry while
Ireland struggled to survive. The reasons for Ireland s inability to take advantage of the Industrial
Revolution are complex, and have been the subject of debate for more than a century. Many English
viewed the Irish as stubborn farmers who refused to embrace the new technology. The Irish, however,
believed the English had sabotaged their efforts to industrialize. The truth of why the Irish fared so
badly while England became the most powerful nation in the world probably lies somewhere between
these two extremes.
It s a common assumption that Ireland s mass exodus during the first half of the l9th ... Show more

Anticipating mass starvation from the previous failed crop, Mrs. Gerrard, like many landowners,
feared nonpayment of rent from her tenants, and suddenly leveled 61 houses occupied by 76 families.
The following is an eyewitness account taken from The Great Hunger.
The inhabitants were not in arrear of their rent, and had, by their industry, reclaimed an area of about
four hundred acres from a neighbouring bog. On the morning of the eviction a large detachment of the
49th Infantry commanded by Captain Brown and numerous police appeared with the Sheriff and his
men...the people were officially called on to give up possession, and the houses were then demolished
roofs torn off, walls thrown down. The scene was frightful; women running, wailing with pieces of
their property and clinging to door posts from which they had to be forcibly torn; men cursing,
children screaming with fright. That night the people slept in the ruins; next day they were driven out,
the foundations of the house were torn up and razed, and no neighbour was allowed to take them in.
(p. 71 2)
Tenant farmers who weren t evicted found there was less land available to them, and these shrinking
plots were being shared by more and more occupants. This diminishing land contributed much to
Ireland s eventual reliance on the potato during the late 18th century. Potatoes didn t rob the soil of its
nitrogen, and the amount of land needed to grow potatoes could feed more people than the same

increasing costs of farming and limitations in the supply of labor. We argue that improving the

cultivars, adopting more laborsaving technologies, and providing incentives to farmers.
Market
Mention Shanghai and many people immediately think of cranes. Not the feathered sort but the
mechanical ones that dominate the skyline. Wherever you go, they rise dramatically from the mud and

Some things never change in Shanghai and an obsession with property is one of them. Apart from

The Origins Of The American Mafia
INTRODUCTION Since their beginning, American society has been fascinated with the gangster
lifestyle and the American Mafia is no exception to this trend. Mafia themed movies such as Scarface
and Goodfellas have proven to be timeless classics. However, the American Mafia goes deeper than
the media shows. While they do have the same name, the American Mafia is a group of Italian
Americans and is not directly affiliated with the original Sicilian Mafia. The American Mafia is a
highly organized and complex nationwide criminal network with a membership hierarchy and a strict
set of values.
HISTORY
The origin of the American Mafia can be traced back to the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. Thousands of
Italians flocked to America in hopes of better economic opportunities. Between 1880 and 1910, the
Italian population in New York alone increased by 2400%, from 20,000 to 500,000. While the
majority of the Italian immigrant were good and law abiding citizens, a minority formed small
neighborhood gangs that would later become one of the largest organized crime gangs in the United
States. During the 1920 s Prohibition era, the 18th Amendment was in full swing and the manufacture,
sale, and distribution of alcohol was strictly banned. The budding American Mafia took this as a
business opportunity and turned to bootlegging. They were incredibly successful at this and their
crime regime also grew to include money laundering, smuggling, and bribing officials. Meanwhile in
Italy, the

The Ira s Failure Of The Irish Civil War
While the War of Independence was the first time Ireland would be separated from England in over
100 years, Ireland and England have had a parallel history for far longer than that. Since the Act for
the Union of Great Britain and Ireland passed in the parliaments of both England and Ireland in 1800,
Ireland has been considered a legal part of the United Kingdom. Prior to this unification by law,
Ireland had been under some sort of British control since the feudal rule under the King of Britain
started in 1177. Feudal rule was brought to a close by proclamation of Henry VIII, in which he
became King of Ireland. The Irish rebellion of 1641 brought a slight bump to this rule, but the re

Unlike in the War of Independence the IRA did not have the backing of many Irish Americans.
Probably the major problem with finding backing amongst their former allies was the fact that they all
almost universally welcomed the signing of the Treat. Even Irish strongholds like the city of Boston
were pro treaty, with one James Phelan telegramming the Lord Mayor of Dublin that he loved the
treaty saying he expressed the feeling(s) of all true friends of Ireland and England the world over .
Even the Catholic church in America refused to help the IRA. Former allies in Scotland were also of
little help as most were loyal to Joseph Vize, who was a member of President Collins inner circle.
With their assets in the United States frozen by Congress, the IRA had little chance of securing enough
money to buy firearms. In addition to this the lack of support of the Irish in the United States meant
that they would be unable to receive any substantial sum of money nor be able to secure weapons
shipments. Additionally, unlike in the previous war they were unable to obtain arms and explosives
from sympathizers in Scotland in large part thanks to Collin s influence over this area. The IRA
repeated a mistake they made during the earliest inkling of revolution, as in the Easter Rebellion they

The Importance of Accountability in the Army Essay examples
The Importance of Accountability Is so you know where everyone is so if you need a person for
something you will know where to find them. It is also necessary to have accountability to make sure
everyone in your unit is safe and so you make sure they are where they are supposed to be. You also
want your unit to be on standby so they are ready for anything that may happen. It is also needed so
nobody goes UA. When you have accountability it is easier to track down people if you were to need
them for anything. Being accountable means being dependable, showing up to work and to
appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being at the right place and at the right time and doing the
right thing at the right time. It is also to see if everyone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There many reasons why accountability is an important part of business. Showing up on time is a very
important thing when it comes to work because if you ever show up late that would be time lost from
the work day or the time you lost you could have been working on something but because you showed
up late that task was never completed on time as needed. When something is not done it affects
everything in the organization. If one thing isn t completed it affects all the other tasks like a chain
reaction. Another reason accountability is needed is so you know where weapons are located. In
leadership roles, accountability is the acknowledgment of responsibility for actions, decisions, and
resulting consequences. Some of those consequences can be loss of pay, loss of rank, or loss of job.
When you say you are going to get something done you are accountable of getting it done no matter
what because you gave your word that you were going to get it done. Whenever you don t keep your
word it makes everyone think you are not reliable. Then none of your peers will come to you for help
because you will not be able to complete the task. Consequences when you do something wrong could
mean that you can lose your job or just get a warning. Whenever you do something wrong it is
possible to correct your mistake if it is possible to make a correction. The ways you can make a
mistake when getting accountability is by not having an up to date muster

The Melting Pot
The melting pot metaphor explains how societies melt together to form a common culture. This
process can be seen throughout the world even with some of the most heterogeneous societies now
becoming more homogeneous. It is very true that change is persistent in all societies and the
possibility of progression is endless, thus creating grounds for new playing fields globally. This
growing interconnectedness known as globalization shows how the world we live in is full of
innovations that bring us closer together than ever imagined before. Whether it be economically,
politically, culturally, technologically, ecologically or socially, there s no doubt globalization has
become one of the strongest forces behind cultural homogenization. Globalization brings about
opportunities such as richer societies through trade, and the sharing of knowledge and information
from people. However, scholars have challenged just how one dimensional these notions can truly be.
How can one effectively create meaning and remain an individual with such a socio political and
political economic driven world? This particular debate is outlined by three fundamentally different
paradigms of cultural difference in Pietere s text. Cultural differentialism is the idea that differences
are lasting (Piterse 2009:4), cultural convergence is the awareness of growing sameness, and cultural
hybridization is an ongoing mix of the two, ultimately creating new differences. Well known author

Madonna and Venus from Two Different Periods Essay
Madonna and Venus From Two Different Periods I have always been intrigued by the many depictions
of Madonna and Venus therefore I chose to compare and contrast Parmigianino s Madonna of the
Long Neck from the mannerist style of the later Renaissance and Titian s Venus of Urbino from
Venetian Renaissance. First I will tell you a little bit about the historical background of both paintings,
then I will prove my thesis by talking about exemplifies two artist s style and the movement it
represents, and considering the differences between two artwork in artistic styles, subject matter, and
formal approaches.

When looking at Madonna with the Long Neck, the colors are subdued and dull but his use of color
with the High Renaissance formula the primary colors. In terms of mannerism, elongation was thought
to create a more elegant and graceful look, which may be one of the main reasons why Mannerist art
contained a lot of unnatural looking human figures. In the painting, I see a lot of elongation being used
in different areas as well as oddly proportioned bodies. Madonna herself has a very extended neck,
which holds up her smaller sized head making her look unusual and abnormal. Below her neck, I see
her unnaturally slanted shoulders and her elongated fingers resting on her chest. Her legs also appear
to be very long as they look much bigger than her narrow upper body. This makes for Madonna being
a very colossal and dominant figure. Furthermore, when comparing Madonna to the women who stand
beside her, Madonna is huge. In Madonna s lap is her baby Christ who also has unnaturally long
features. The body of baby Christ is so long especially his legs. It looks like a much older boy. I think
Pontormo wanted the audience to focus more on the bodies and the drama, rather than the specific
details.
In Venus of Urbino, Titian formed a good composition that balances somewhat the delicate static
character of the reclining Venus with a consistent dynamic component. The painting

Is Technology Has Changed Our Brains
Don t Fret: Technology Has Changed Our Brains Humans are creatures of habit. We wake up at
specific times to go about our days and then we sit down at our dining room tables to eat at specified
times throughout the day, usually habitually. But, humanity hasn t always been this algorithmic. It
wasn t until the advent of the mechanical clock that our lives began to mold around time. We changed.
I would like to assume that we became more productive because of this change. However, humanity
historically hasn t perceived change as good. In Sherry Turkle s The Flight from Conversation she
negatively asserts that technology has changed the way we socialize and communicate by sacrificing
conversation for our mere connection to each other through technology and allowing that connection
to replace the former. In the same vein, Nicholas Carr s Is Google Making Us Stupid? establishes the
idea that technology has altered the way we critically read and think for the worse. As the title of his
article suggests, Google (more broadly the internet) has simplified our reading style, and in turn is
making us stupid . I choose to defy both these notions. Technology hasn t become the catalyst for a
society where we lose the ability to have social connections or critically read and think. Rather,
humans have adapted to change through the use of technology as a new way of thinking, reading,
connecting, and socializing in attempt to become more productive and efficient.

Russian Revolution After World War I Essay
For many revolutions people may argue different reasons why that particular revolution was caused,
but there often one that is the primary cause. The Russian Revolution began February 1917, many
people in Russia lost faith in their government, especially since they had not done so well to begin
with when they participated in World War I. Which resulted in a lot of expenses. Others may argue
that since Tsar was an unproductive leader and because of the decisions he made when he was in
power that influenced the Russian Revolution. Although Tsar s weak leadership may have influenced

Russia struggled to provide food for its populations. Citizens took control into their own hands,
Ludovic Naudeau wrote in October 1917, One morning recently I was awakened by the cries of my

office told me that he had been robbed six of pairs of pantaloons, ... Four hundred thefts every night!
he cried; that is the average for the last two weeks, (One Aspect of Bolshevist Liberty). Russia could
not even uphold itself because the economy was not successful compared to other countries. This led
people to desire a change in the government; therefore this led to the Russian Revolution. People went
to different maters to get what they wanted such as stealing since they were not getting the aid that
they needed and they needed financial support. This caused them to protest against their government
because many people from the lower class could not take care of their families. This cause led to a
greater impact compared to Tsarist weak authority. Some may argue Tsar Nicholas weak leadership
help contributes to the Russian Revolution but World War I was be the primary cause. Tsar Nicholas

because his actions did not lead to as many problems that World War I had caused. World War I had a

Power, Decision-Making, And Decision Making In A Family
For my interview, I talked with my mom and dad, Sharla and Bruce Zwanziger. My parents have been
happily married for 21 years now. The unconditional love that they show for each other every day
makes me hope that someday I have a marriage just like theirs. I interviewed my parents about power,
decision making, and conflict management in their relationship. For the first question, I asked my
parents how they approached power, decision making, and conflict in their relationship. After asking
this question, my mom replied with I think we both have very easy going personalities, so when it
comes to conflicts, we both talk about different options and listen to each others ideas. (S. Zwanziger,
personal interview, June 25, 2017.). My dad replied with Yes, I definitely agree with that. We both
have different ideas sometimes, but we make sure that we are open to each others ideas as well as our
own. (B. Zwanziger, personal interview, June 25, 2017.). As I watched them answer this question, I
noticed that they both paid very good attention to each other and let one another state their opinions,
just like how I would imagine their conversations about solving a conflict would be. Just like my
parents, Galvin, Braithwaite, and Bylund (2015), believe that decision making in a family involves
more than just one individual (p. 197). They agree that whatever decisions that are made will affect
the entire family, so everyone in the family should have a say in what the decision is

Essay On Acropolis
The acropolis is one of Greece s most monumental pieces that is still standing today, Built as a place
of worship. The temples within its walls were used to worship Greek gods like Athena and Poseidon.
Rising over three hundred feet above the city of Athens, it can clearly be noticed why it is called The
Acropolis , which means top of the city . It isn t the only acropolis in Greece, but it was noticeable
more than the others because of its almost flawless planning in where each building is placed.
The winding rocky path that led up to the Acropolis was surrounded by numerous small shrines,
including one to the god Pan, who had appeared to the runner Phidippides before the battle of
Marathon. At its top was the Propylaia, an entryway and façade that formed the gateway to the
Acropolis. Once inside the Sacred Precinct you d notice the most fabulous building in there, The
Parthenon . The Parthenon was started in 447 BC, but they couldn t finish it so they completed it some
fifteen years later. It housed both a treasury and a sanctuary to Athena, in which was placed a fantastic
12 meter high ivory and gold statue of the goddess Athena , called the Athena Parthenos . ... Show

Despite these obstacles he was successful in creating a harmonious entrance. It took two hundred
years of experimenting to get it right. Each building is placed specifically to be pleasing to the viewer
s eye. As for the viewer s point of view every building is seen in perspective, and at any point from the
entrance there is only one face from each building that is seen. This is what made the Acropolis at
Athens have a great architectural and historic significance. What makes the Acropolis amazing is the

Why Physical Therapy
Why Be a Physical Therapist?!
Sometimes in life we don t know which direction to take in choosing the best career for us. I was once
in that place knowing that I wanted to do something in the medical field but I didn t know exactly
what. After doing some research I came across physical therapy and how rewarding it is to become
one. Knowing that I can make a difference in people s lives meant a lot to me. I suggest many to
follow the physical therapy career path. You will work one on one, see them progress through
treatment, and know that you are making a difference in their lives, (said APTA Meredith Harris).

Essay about ansel adams
Ansel Adams photographer and artist
Until the 19th century most artwork was created in a two or three dimensional media. In England,
William Fox discovered a technique that allowed camera images to be captured on paper. This
medium has evolved since Fox s discovery in 1839 to a serious and viable form of art today.
Photography allows the artist to capture what he sees. The image produced is reality to the artists eye,
it can only be manipulated with light and angles.
The photograph is a very powerful medium. The French painter Paul Delaroche exclaimed upon
seeing an early photograph from now on, painting is dead! (Sayre, 2000). Many critics did not take
photography seriously as a legitimate art form until the 20th century. With the ... Show more content

sometimes abstract design (Jacobs, 1995).
In 1935, Adams published his first book, Making a Photograph. Six years later, his Zone System was
formulated. The Zone System introduced a way for the professional and amateur photographers to
determine and control the exposure and development of prints for maximum visual acuity (Jacobs,
1995). The Zone System marked his first efforts at public education on photography.
Adams felt a sense of duty to share his knowledge of nature and photography. ...[Adams] was master

Adams cherished the times he spent on vacation in Yosemite with his family. He spent part of his life
teaching others how to capture the panoramic beauty of our national parks. In 1940 he taught his first

Women s Struggle For Equal Rights
In pre Revolutionary France and America, Women had no political rights and were forced to rely on
men. The women were destined to live a life of a house wife, she was only seen competent enough in
society to raise and educate kids and take care of her household. In both countries, the revolution
increased the population s attention to political matters and made liberty and equality very important
to the people. Unfortunately, Women did not claim any rights during this time, but the women of the
French Revolution and the activities they were implicated in heavily influenced the movement and
struggle for equal rights. Their March on Versailles, their political clubs and pamphlets, and the
prominent women political figures were vital assets that influenced the struggle and movement for
equal rights during the 19th and 20th century in France. During that period, due to the abolition of the
censorship and the liberty to publish, some writers argued for the women s struggle for liberation and
suffrage like Judith Sargent Murray with her Essay On the Equality of the Sexes , which protested the
idea that men had greater intellectual capacities then women, As well as other French writers such as
Olympe de Gouges who wrote several plays, short stories and novels in which she expressed that
women and men are different, but this shouldn t stop them from equality under the law. Additionally,
De Gouges was the author of the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen in

Biography Of Sir Isaac Newton s Life
By: Katlyn Arneson Every day there are new better things being offered to the world, whether it be a
new Phone, a new car, or even a new type of medical advancement, there is always going to be
something new that we haven t heard of or seen before. During Newton s time, many people didn t
understand the concept of light, motion or gravity until Newton came around and discovered them. I
know one question that I have is what would our world be like today if these important discoveries
were not found?
Sir Isaac Newton was simply a genius. He discovered many important aspects that are used in the
modern world on a daily basis. He was very passionate about learning and his innovations changed the
world. The first innovation that Newton brought to our world was the discovery of light. Newton said
that white light is made up of many colors. He discovered this by setting up a prism near his window,
and projecting a spectrum twenty two feet onto the far wall, to prove that the prism was not coloring
the light, he refracted the light back together. The advantage of Newton s theory of light is that we
know that light is made up of many colors. If he wouldn t have discovered this phenomena, we would
still think that color was a mixture of light and darkness, which is what people thought before Newton
s theory of light. Along with his light theory, Newton also discovered the lovely subject Calculus and
he invented a telescope using a mirror rather than a lens, which was something

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara And Horatio Alger
Success is the chance to go out there and use the resources available to take advantage of opportunities
that most people do not. Usually, things happen in life and it can prevent the process of obtaining
success. In the readings, The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara and Horatio Alger by Harlon L. Dalton
conveys the message that success is not always an everyday thing and it takes opportunities for it to
become part of life. In The Lesson , an angered girl named Sylvia is taken on a field trip to a toy store
with Miss Moore to learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is to become successful in society because it is
the only way to make it to the top. On the other hand, Horatio Alger shows more of a realistic
viewpoint where success is not as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dalton states, Black folk certainly know what it is like to be favored, disfavored, scrutinized, and
ignored all on the basis of our race. Sometimes we are judged on a different scale altogether (273).
Dalton is trying to state that African Americans know what it is like to be judged and because of this it
creates a road block. In addition, race has become a universal problem that people tend to cause huge
tensions and the way Horatio Alger s essay states it is that everyone is equal would not be true. On the
other hand, Sylvia seems to be under the paradox that Dalton has stated about race. Sylvia throughout
the story goes on a field trip to a toy store where she sees items that cost a lot of money from the glass
window, but when she enters the store an issue occurs. Sylvia states, Not that I m scared, what s there
to be afraid of, just a toy store. But I feel funny, shame. But what I got to be shamed about? Got as
much right to go in as anybody (269). Sylvia is afraid to enter the store because the fear of race keeps
occurring in her mind. It is a huge issue because African Americans had many different views and it
made them feel insecure. Also, Sylvia knows that the toy store is fancy and expensive, which triggers
her to back off because she is from a poor background. Race has a huge impact on society, no matter
what way it is looked at and Sylvia s fear expresses that of many at the time.

New Asembling Forms Of The Industrial Revolution
In the eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution was the progress to new assembling forms
introducing machines for the manufacture of textile goods that were speedier and more productive
than individuals. Logical advances in mechanical development, agriculture, modern creation, and
financial extension sparked the inventions of the spinning jenny (1765) created by James Hargreaves,
allowed more wool to be spun at a time increasing production. In 1775, James Watt invented the steam
engine which was used to pump water and air into and out of the coal mines. As new and improved
editions of the steam engine was created, new forms of transportation became available such as the
steamboat and the railroad. The power loom ( also in 1775) created

What Was The Impact Of The Second World War Essay
The massive impact the second world war has had on the world can still be seen today. On the 70th
anniversary of the end of World War II, one wonders what had caused it and what were the effects of
this conflict on the world. World War II was a terrible moment in human history, however, the war has
had positive effects such as the formation of the United Nations and the economic boom in the United
States. We should look back at history on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II with what
we have gained from this war and the invaluable lesson it taught. It has been seventy years since the
closing of the Second World War. This war between the Axis powers and Allies, which lasted from
1939 to 1945, left a definite mark on the world. The amount of casualties from the war was the highest
in any war in human history, with the death toll going as high as 80 million. General Dwight D.
Eisenhower, a five star general in the United States Army, once said while visiting a nazi death camp,
The world must know what happened, and never forget. So what had caused this brutal moment in
history? Many say that the cause of the Second World War was primarily because of ... Show more

The Capitalist Class And The Proletariat Essay
Adam Smith and Karl Marx both examine the capitalist mode of production as an issue of central
theoretical concern. I will be addressing many issues regarding capitalism from both theorists that will
demonstrate the general theoretical orientation that each has towards the nature of capitalism and the
roles of the capitalist class and the proletariat. This includes the moral character of the capitalist class,
the tendency of capitalism towards crisis, the effects of the division of labour, and the permanence of
the system in a historical context. Further, I will also demonstrate why these issues are relevant today,
and how many of the arguments made by these theorists are still being used.
The first issue surrounding the nature of capitalism I will address is the moral character of the
capitalist class as perceived by Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The overall position that Adam Smith
adopts in the Wealth of Nations is that the pursuit of self interest for personal gain of the capitalist can
be beneficial for the general welfare of society, so long as it is channeled through the market rather
than through the interference of the state (Baumol 1976; McNally 1998). However, this does not
imply that the interests of the capitalist class should be the guiding interests of the market. Baumol
(1976) argues that Smith repeatedly attacks the personal morality of the capitalists, arguing that the
intentions of the individual should not determine the economic fate of society. Smith

The Theme Of Nature InLight, By Eva Figess
In the world today, the journey of life portrays a human s characteristics through the principles of their
growth, emotions, and aspirations. As Noam Chomsky once said, Humanity is made up of sniffles,
happiness, and anger in a bundle of internal thoughts. In the novel, Light, by Eva Figes, she exhibits
illuminates the story by studying the human condition. She also demonstrates how ideas and the
character s nature are associated with a theme. As a result, Figes uses grief and childhood to illustrate
the characters actions, imagery from the text, as well as aspects of the individuals. For example, the
curiosity of a young girl and a grieving mother reveal a message in the story. Also, variation of detail
exposes in the text the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another major event that takes place in the literature was when Lily is lured towards a morning light.
The grandduaghter then becomes fascinated with what she is observing her environment: Laying back
down in bed she then begins to observe the leafy hinged panels and a clear light coming into the room,
creating a bigger perspective (Figes 21). The excerpt presents Lily s childhood state. She is curious
about what is happening in her bedroom. The text also exemplifies Lily s character through the usage
of light by studying its features. A little while Lily is attracted to a pond full of water lilies: The
aquatic plants then began to unbolt, layer after layer with rows of flowery petals folded back to the
sky, revealing many light hues (Figes 35). The quote shows that as Lily approaches the flowers on the
pond, each plant reflects brilliance from the sun. She also uses nature to describe the various aspects
of light bouncing from the sky. The character s essence represents her childhood because she is
curious about the natural features from the earth. The author then uses figurative language to reveal
the aesthetics in nature. For example, Figes incorporates a depressing setting in Alice s environment
because of the sadness in her life. The narrator clarifies that, ...its vibration continued, sounds going
through the cool shadowy spaces, rising forward into the pale sky (Figes 8). The author then shows
that the details in the background is related to a

The west had small towns popping up everywhere and with little to no law, the Marshals were called
in to police the Wild West .
The Marshals duties really didn t with the exception of serving a lot more warrants and the hunting of
outlaws. Some of the famous outlaws hunted by the Marshals include Billy the Kid, Jessie James, and
Butch Cassidy. Marshals such as Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok and Pat Garret were perhaps just as
famous or infamous as the outlaws themselves. After many outlaw and Marshal deaths, the wild west
calmed down and the Marshals moved into a new century that brought civil unrest.
The 1900 s began with a steel, steel for railroads that is. With the expansion of America west, railroads
became the main source of travel. With no one to protect the railroads from robbers, and natives, the
US Marshals found themselves guarding Americas interest. 1917 brought the first World War and the
Marshals found them selves with new taskings from the justice department. They protected ports and
industries that were crucial to the success of America in the war.
Due to the development of multiple federal agencies such as the FBI, the Marshals fell silent until the
1960 s. The 1960 s was the start of the civil rights movement in America. With all of the unrest, the
Marshals found themselves protecting equality and integration of races. In the late 60 s the
Department of Justice finally saw that the Marshals were a key asset within the department and

  • 2. Skin Fold Method Essay Potential sources of measurement error can occur while using the skin fold method if the person that is administrating the test has not had significant amount of practice. Taking skin fold measurements requires specific training. Without training, it is complicated to obtain consistent accurate skin fold measurements. To reduce error while using the skin fold method, it is important to have a good quality skin fold caliper. Good quality calipers should deliver a specific amount of force and this can be assured by the manufacturer of the caliper. he easiest skin fold site to measure was the abdominal area. Typically, most people have a greater amount of fat in this area, therefore, it was easier to grab and measure. The thigh is the most difficult ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Certain areas of measurements was harder to take than other areas because of it s angle. It was harder to take skin fold measurements on a participant who did not have much fat on their body. It was also difficult to take measurements when the participant was in multiple layers of clothes. The potential sources of error when measuring circumferences and skeletal diameters can occur if the administrator does not properly measure the specific areas. Measuring too high or too low of a certain area can skew accuracy. It is also important for the administrator to remember to stand on the right side of the participant. Not accurately reading the measuring tape can result in error. For example, reading inches instead of centimeters would cause error. For my skin fold measurements, body fat percentage was between twenty five and thirty five percent. For BIA, my body fat percentage for sitting was twenty two percent, standing with straight arms was twenty one percent, and standing with bent arms at seventeen percent. The measurements may have been different since the SKF was taken by a person and BIA through a machine. Although the results were not completely off, it was off by a few ... Disabilities Education Act Up until age 21, children with disabilities are covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which was first enacted in 1975 and most recently revised in 2004. IDEA mandates that every state provides children with disabilities a free public education that meets their individual and unique needs (Autism speaks toolkit, 2015). Many families with children with ASD have spent years navigating the school system in order to maximize their child s potential under this Act. While sparse, there are colleges and universities that are skilled at providing accommodations for students with ASD. Unfortunately, students with ASD have decreased graduation and employment rates, and they are more likely to develop mental health disorders during their college years when compared with other students with disabilities (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). Challenges the students with ASD will face in college include organizational and time management difficulties, lacking self advocacy skills, sensory overload, and problems meeting academic demands (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). It is important for a primary care provider to provide anticipatory guidance to the adolescent and their family of what to expect of postsecondary school if that is what they choose for the next step. A recent study investigated the challenges and support needs of students with ASD in postsecondary education (Hees, Moyson, Roeyers, 2015). The first challenge the researchers found were that the students with ASD struggled with the new situations and unexpected changes in college. • 5. Social Conformity In The Fountainhead, By Ayn Rand In a world plagued by the infinite expansion of corruptness, human beings are tainted by the natural tendency to succumb to the horrors of social conformity. This social conditioning is the source of all challenges that individuals are faced with in life. In the masterpiece The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand, the protagonist Howard Roark is considered to be a moral ideal that others must attempt to mirror. In the midst of unimaginable distress and agony, Roark remains valiant and never ceases to remain true to himself. Rand considered this trait to be one in which society should abide by a quality of stubbornness to shuffle into the river of social acceptance. While many regard Roark to be an outstanding role model, to imitate his ideals would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Howard Roark has a unique way of living his life, based on objectivism, attempting to emulate this behavior is a paradox upon itself. Roark does not wish to be the symbol of anything. [He s] only [himself] (602). While creating a character who is a moral ideal to emulate might have been what Ayn Rand wished while writing The Fountainhead, she is contacting the very beliefs that Roark abides by. Roark is a man of honor and dignity a man who would never turn his back on his morals. The most important rule of Roark s philosophy is to be able to stand by one s beliefs. If an individual attempts to emulate Roark s morals, then he/she is breaking the fundamental concept of objectivism. As stated in plain text by Roark, reason can be fought with reason (346). While the reasoning behind emulating Roark s behavior may be valid, it is impossible for one to do so without disgracing the objectivistic lifestyle. While Howard Roark is an exceptional character in literature that has made a profound mark on the advancement of human growth, who is to say that the polar opposite of Roark could not also be considered a moral ideal ? The greatest athletes of all time would have never been anything if it were not for his journey. Jackie broke the color barrier in professional sports, up until the time that he played in there were only white males were playing professionally. If it is even possible, try and imagine a world with no Michael Jordan, no Barry Sanders, or no Barry Bonds. His teammates did not do this at first; and, they were completely against him at the beginning. But as time grew on, they saw the things he was going through for no reason. They were on his side and had his back in situations like that. Other white people frowned upon them because of their love for Jackie. According to Rubie Obias, a writer for a magazine, Jackie Roosevelt Robinson was born January 31, 1919 in Georgia (2012). But later his family would end up moving to California. • 11. Pushing The Herd Off The Cliff Edge Introduction The idea of institutional herding has a striking implication for security price volatility. Estimations from the essay Sending the Herd Off the Cliff Edge suggests that the predominance of herding behavior may explain why the financial system in 1990s had been in crisis for 40 out of the 120 months or 33% of the time (Persaud, 2000). These concerns, along with the increasing stock market ownership of institution investor in comparison to individual investors, is often used as a basis for advocating for an increase in monitoring institutional trading in equity markets in hopes that it that would lead to a reduction in the dominance of institutional investors in the financial market. However such claims are not fully supported by empirical research in the literature. Two schools of thoughts emerge the first being that herding enhances pricing efficiency, and second ascertains that herding initiates short term trend reversals. The emergence of two seemingly polar opposite beliefs is not as a result of lack of scholarly competence but rather due to the nature of complexity within the subject leading to conflicts in assumptions and methodology. • 12. Mythology in Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were... Mythology is a key part of many of Zora Neale Hurston s short stories and novels. She researched the stories of her home town and many other areas of the world. Hurston used this knowledge of myths and stories to help her carry them on to later generations in a form that almost everybody could relate to. Through out all of Zora Neale Hurston s stories, mythology has been a crucial keystone. Her novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, has been influenced by three different ancient myths: the myths of Ezili Freda, Osiris and Isis, and Aphrodite and Adonis. Janie s love for nature and turbulent relationships comes from the myth of the Haitian Goddess of love, Ezili Freda. In the novel the main character, Janie, is deeply interested in love and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But this relationship is cut short by Adonis getting attacked and castrated by a wild boar (Stine). Later, Adonis bled to death (Stine). After her first three husbands Janie finally found a man she could be with, Tea Cake. And going along with the myth of Aphrodite and Adonis, Janie must stand by and watch as Tea Cake is attacked by an animal which in Hurston s story was a dog. She ends up having to kill him and watch him die as did Aphrodite with Adonis. One of the largest mythological influences on Their Eyes Were Watching God is the myth of Isis and Osiris. Ishtar is a goddess associated with love and was very callous with the men that she loved. (Pondrom 181). Ishtar fell in love with a God by the name of Tammuz and eventually ended up being responsible for his death (Pondrom 181). She descended into the underworld and was successful in bringing him back and she lived at peace (Pondrom 181). We see strong parallels to this myth in Their Eyes Were Watching God. After multiple loveless relationships Janie fell in love with Tea Cake. She eventually had to kill him because he had rabies. Later, she was able to restore him to her memory, bringing her peace. Isis and Osiris were in love, but this relationship did not last long once Osiris was killed (Pondrom 181). Osiris body was sent out on a ship and Isis goes to retrieve the body and is able to partially restore him (Pondrom 181). Again, a myth with Isis losing her love and being able to restore them ... We come across tons of unfiltered images everyday, whether we see them in newspapers or magazines. These images move us, they have an impact on some of us, deep to our core. The photograph that is forever imprinted in my mind is the image The Falling Man, from The New York Times, a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. When analyzing this photograph it seems like the falling man has accepted his fate. One can look at this photo ten years or even hundred years from now, and still encapsulate the horror, and pain, that American people endured on September 11, 2011. As much as I want to wipe this image from my memory, I think it will always haunt me. Part of the reason it haunts me is because it brings me back to the phone called I received that day from my best friend. My best friend s father lost his life that day along with the falling man. The flashback is clearer in my mind than ever. They consisted of royal officials, wealthy merchants, conservative urban lawyers, people who disliked pro revolution citizens, southern slaves who looked to Britain in hope of freedom, and a multitude of Indian tribes. Contrary to popular view, one could argue that the American Revolution was not only a fight between the Patriots and the British, but it was really a civil war between the Rebels and the Tories. The fight between the Rebels and the Tories can be described as brutal because of the guerilla warfare, brigade war, tarring and feathering, and killings that were exhibited between the two sides. According to Tories: Fighting For the King in America s First Civil War, General Nathanael Greene stated, The division among the people is much greater than I imagined and the Whigs and Tories persecute each other, with little less than savage fury. There is nothing but murders and devastation in every quarter. (Thomas Allen p. 1). The Tories main concern was stability, which the British could provide to them unlike the rebels. Many times, this would divide families because they would disagree on whether they wanted to be a Tory or a Rebel. During the early 1800s the lives of enslaved women were extremely demanding. The female slaves were expected to bear children, as well as were required to work just as hard as the male slaves on the plantation. Days were long and laborious for slave mothers, they had to make sure that all the work that needed to be done was completed, and also care for their children. Female slaves jobs varied from housework, to field work. Slave mothers knew that giving up on their work was not an option, they had to persevere for their families. There was no gender discrimination in the fields, female slaves had to perform almost all of the plantation chores. Some of the chores female slaves were obligated to complete were picking, hoeing, plowing, mending fences, burning fields, weeding, planting, and harvesting. The work day was long and grueling, slaves worked from sunrise to the sunset. Working the fields was a strenuous job, however it was not done alone. America has progressed significantly since slavery was abolished over 150 years ago; however, there are still significant differences the land of the free continues to make between races in. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Across the country, minorities, specifically African Americans, are being unfairly targeted and arrested for marijuana related crimes compared to Caucasians. The state must stand up against this and propose a change in the strict laws surrounding marijuana, or also known as cannabis. The disparities in arrest rates are caused by the bias and generalizations law enforcement and society have towards minorities. This disproportionality is proven based off arrest data gathered from different states, counties, and cities ( The war on marijuana in black and white, 2013). The discrepancy in apprehensions involving cannabis has become a noteworthy social problem that has led to some states already implementing and adopting new policies on marijuana use. The ultimate goal is for Texas to pass a bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, Texas can adopt plan in place similar to that of the other five states that have already allowed the private consumption of marijuana. However, scholars have challenged just how one dimensional these notions can truly be. How can one effectively create meaning and remain an individual with such a socio political and political economic driven world? This particular debate is outlined by three fundamentally different paradigms of cultural difference in Pietere s text. Cultural differentialism is the idea that differences are lasting (Piterse 2009:4), cultural convergence is the awareness of growing sameness, and cultural hybridization is an ongoing mix of the two, ultimately creating new differences. Madonna and Venus from Two Different Periods Essay Madonna and Venus From Two Different Periods I have always been intrigued by the many depictions of Madonna and Venus therefore I chose to compare and contrast Parmigianino s Madonna of the Long Neck from the mannerist style of the later Renaissance and Titian s Venus of Urbino from Venetian Renaissance. First I will tell you a little bit about the historical background of both paintings, then I will prove my thesis by talking about exemplifies two artist s style and the movement it represents, and considering the differences between two artwork in artistic styles, subject matter, and formal approaches. When looking at Madonna with the Long Neck, the colors are subdued and dull but his use of color with the High Renaissance formula the primary colors. In terms of mannerism, elongation was thought to create a more elegant and graceful look, which may be one of the main reasons why Mannerist art contained a lot of unnatural looking human figures. In the painting, I see a lot of elongation being used in different areas as well as oddly proportioned bodies. Madonna herself has a very extended neck, which holds up her smaller sized head making her look unusual and abnormal. Below her neck, I see her unnaturally slanted shoulders and her elongated fingers resting on her chest. Her legs also appear to be very long as they look much bigger than her narrow upper body. This makes for Madonna being a very colossal and dominant figure. Furthermore, when comparing Madonna to the women who stand beside her, Madonna is huge. In Madonna s lap is her baby Christ who also has unnaturally long features. The body of baby Christ is so long especially his legs. It looks like a much older boy. I think Pontormo wanted the audience to focus more on the bodies and the drama, rather than the specific details. In Venus of Urbino, Titian formed a good composition that balances somewhat the delicate static character of the reclining Venus with a consistent dynamic component. The painting ... We wake up at specific times to go about our days and then we sit down at our dining room tables to eat at specified times throughout the day, usually habitually. But, humanity hasn t always been this algorithmic. It wasn t until the advent of the mechanical clock that our lives began to mold around time. We changed. I would like to assume that we became more productive because of this change. However, humanity historically hasn t perceived change as good. In Sherry Turkle s The Flight from Conversation she negatively asserts that technology has changed the way we socialize and communicate by sacrificing conversation for our mere connection to each other through technology and allowing that connection to replace the former. In the same vein, Nicholas Carr s Is Google Making Us Stupid? establishes the idea that technology has altered the way we critically read and think for the worse. As the title of his article suggests, Google (more broadly the internet) has simplified our reading style, and in turn is making us stupid . I choose to defy both these notions. Technology hasn t become the catalyst for a society where we lose the ability to have social connections or critically read and think. Rather, humans have adapted to change through the use of technology as a new way of thinking, reading, connecting, and socializing in attempt to become more productive and efficient. This caused them to protest against their government because many people from the lower class could not take care of their families. He discovered many important aspects that are used in the modern world on a daily basis. He was very passionate about learning and his innovations changed the world. The first innovation that Newton brought to our world was the discovery of light. Newton said that white light is made up of many colors. He discovered this by setting up a prism near his window, and projecting a spectrum twenty two feet onto the far wall, to prove that the prism was not coloring the light, he refracted the light back together. The advantage of Newton s theory of light is that we know that light is made up of many colors. I will be addressing many issues regarding capitalism from both theorists that will demonstrate the general theoretical orientation that each has towards the nature of capitalism and the roles of the capitalist class and the proletariat. This includes the moral character of the capitalist class, the tendency of capitalism towards crisis, the effects of the division of labour, and the permanence of the system in a historical context. Further, I will also demonstrate why these issues are relevant today, and how many of the arguments made by these theorists are still being used. The first issue surrounding the nature of capitalism I will address is the moral character of the capitalist class as perceived by Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The overall position that Adam Smith adopts in the Wealth of Nations is that the pursuit of self interest for personal gain of the capitalist can be beneficial for the general welfare of society, so long as it is channeled through the market rather than through the interference of the state (Baumol 1976; McNally 1998). However, this does not imply that the interests of the capitalist class should be the guiding interests of the market.
