The, The Ancient Olympics, By Nigel Spivey
In the monograph, The Ancient Olympics, Nigel Spivey examines how culture encourages and shapes
the Olympic Games, as well as become a safe haven for ancient Greece during times of conflict. This
multifaceted monograph demonstrates that the societal behavior of the Athenians shifted within
prescribed roles regarding the use of violence, the imagery of true beauty, and the love for Greece s
youth during the games. In addition to shedding light on society s enlightening interpretation of what
occurs within the gymnasia, the Olympic Games redirect a whole new meaning to conflicts that arise
on and off the Olympic stage. Although the concept of a multifaceted culture revolving around
incessant conflict is not new to the study of ancient Greece, it is Spivey s unique analysis of the
impact of the Olympic Games that make his argument so compelling to his readers. Specifically,
Spivey argues that the behaviors captured during the Olympic games in ancient Greece and Rome are
synonymous with the shifts in cultural norms observed , as well as society s reactions to incessant
conflict surrounding ancient Greece, within and outside of the Olympic gymnasia. In order to
conceptualize the very shift in cultural norms that took place during the Olympic Games within
ancient history, Nigel Spivey claims in his monograph that the societal interpretation of the Games
correlates to culturally prescribed roles regarding strife as a guiding principle of existence, the
imagery of true masculinity,

Government Surveillance In America
Government Surveillance Are the controversies true? Am I always being watched? These questions
are typical questions that most Americans might be asking themselves for the past few years. For
years, the American eye has been opened to everyday threats of being watched, monitored and spied
on by the government. For some, this may not have come off as shocking as it may have had to other,
but the problem is still there and problem is still there. The problem Americans face is the problem of
being under constant surveillance by our trusted leaders. In America, government surveillance needs
to be reduced. The Patriot Act demonstrates how much unnecessary supervision the government has
on America. After America s 9/11 incident, the Patriot Act was hastily passed in regard to protect ...

Essay on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was probably the greatest genius in Western musical history. He was born
in Salzberg, Austria on January 27, 1756. The son of Leopold Mozart and his wife Anna Maria Pertl.
Leopold was a successful composer and violinist and assistant concertmaster at the Salzberg court.
At the age of three, Wolfgang showed signs of remarkable musical talent. He learned to play the
harpsichord, a keyboard instrument related to the piano, at the age of four. Wolfgang began composing
minuets at the age of five. When he was only six years old, he and his older sister, Anna Maria,
embarked on a series of concert tours to Europe s courts and major cities. They played for the Austrian

Several of his twenty two operas gained worldwide recognition soon after his death, and they still
please audiences all over the world. The Marriage of Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787) are
operas he composed with words in Italian. The Magic Flute (1791) has German words. Each of these
contains arias (beautiful melodies for singers), recitative (Rapidly sung dialogue), ensembles in which
several people sing at the same time, and choruses. The orchestra provides an ever changing
expressive accompaniment. The drama ranges from comedy to tragedy. Mozart wrote over forty
symphonies, many of which are performed today. Some originally were overtures (orchestral
introductions) for operas, and last only a few minutes. His later symphonies, which are the most
popular, are full length orchestral compositions that last twenty to thirty minutes. Most of them consist
of four sections. Mozart s last and most famous symphony, Number 41 (1788), is nicknamed the
Jupiter.
Mozart composed a great amount of church music, most of it for performance at the Salzburg
Cathedral. He wrote Masses and shorter pieces called motets; and he set psalms to music, especially
for the afternoon or evening service. The music is beautiful and varied. It includes choral and solo
parts, usually with accompaniment by organ and orchestra. Mozart s best known sacred work is the
Requiem (Mass for the Dead). He began it in the last year of his life and

Archaeopteryx Research Paper
For my research project, I did it on the archaeopteryx and the dodo bird. The archaeopteryx, also
known as the ancient wing . It comes from the 2 Greek words archaīos, meaning ancient, and ptéryx,
meaning wing. The Dodo bird or the flightless bird is another example of an extinct species that is
included in this paper.
The archaeopteryx, once thought of as the First Bird or Urvogel was a avian/reptile. The
Archaeopteryx was believed to live about 150 million years ago, towards the end of the Jurassic
period. The Avian dinosaur was a carnivore and scientist believe it prayed on small animals, which it
would pick up in its talons. It also had wings like any other avian, but scientist are not completely sure
if it could fly, glide or it even be another type of flightless bird, like the Dodo.
The structure of the reptilian/ avian has many similarities and differences to the modern bird, which is
why it s understandable that the scientist were not sure what to categorize the creature. The size of the
Ancient Wing, is typically the size of a modern day raven with the weight of only 2 pounds. A
distinguishing trait about the creature is the fact it had a full set of teeth which lead scientist to believe
that this animal is in fact a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This species is in the columbidae family, a family made up of doves and pigeons. The dodo bird does

Another amazing fact about these interesting creature is that appearance of the dodo bird was only
confirmed in 2007, though their has been many drawings of the creature they were all amateur
drawings of all of these characters. The reason why the dodo birds where able to nest on the ground is
because during there time of existence and the environment around them, the species around them

Torture In Count Olaf s The Baudelaire Children
In this novel, the Baudelaire children each face the possibility of either death, sexual assault, or
torture. Count Olaf demonstrates paedophilic behaviours towards Violet by attempting to marry her in
order to gain access to their fortune that their parents have left for them in their will. When Count Olaf
confronts her with this unfavourable situation, he strokes Violet s hair (Snicket 94). Violet realizes that
agreeing to marry this predatory man entails maintaining traditional gender roles. She imagines
sleeping beside Count Olaf, and waking up each morning to look at [him]. She pictured wandering
around the house [...] and cooking for his terrible friends at night (94). Not only does this passage
entail possibilities of non consensual sex between Count Olaf and Violet, but also encompasses torture
of Violet, since she is no longer able to follow her dreams of becoming an inventor. These themes of
sexual assault, lack of consent, and being forced into gender roles can be very traumatic ... Show more

He is struck across the face by him and humiliated by Count Olaf s company when he is struck. This is
demonstrated when the theatre troupe laughed and [...] applauded at Klaus s abuse (46). It is clear that
Count Olaf s strike was rather hard as it is stated that it left a bruise on Klaus s cheek (49). Klaus
receives rather gruesome death threats from other members of the theatre troupe. While attempting to
do research into Count Olaf s plan, the member of the troupe with the hook hands tells Klaus that the
only reason Count Olaf hasn t torn [him] limb from limb is that he hasn t gotten a hold of [his] money

already demonstrated his lack of inhibition to act violently towards children. The depiction of violence

Genetically Modified Organism Or Gmo
ntroduction: Genetically modified organism or GMO, while a genetic marvel that has the capability to
advance our scientific knowledge also brings fear into people s hearts and minds whenever mentioned
in the media. For years its usage and dangers have been hotly debated within the science community
and the general public. It seems that a good portion of the nation s population are afraid of GMOs, and
unfortunately many people that are anti GMO are very under informed in what or how GMO is
created. According to World Health Organization (WHO), genetically modified organisms are animals,
plants, or prokaryotes in which their DNA is altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating
or natural recombination.1 By this definition, the only difference between GMO and naturally
occurring organisms is one is made in a laboratory while the other is created through a natural process
like mating. The process in which a GMO is produced, strictly speaking, is very simple. There are
only three things needed to accomplish a modified organism and these are: the insert gene, target
species, and vector(HudsonAlpha)2. To initiate the process, the insert gene must be cut and isolated
through restriction enzymes, then transferred to the target gene, thereby becoming the vector2. In
1978, Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer introduced recombinant DNA technology that resulted in the
biotechnology boom (Ballard et al.)3 and with it gave rise to genetic engineering. After Cohen and

The Art of Living Consciously
What does it mean to live consciously? To live consciously means to take every aspect of your life and
try to look deeper into what is going on. In his book, Branden tries to take different aspects of life and
try to explain to the reader how it is that we can live consciously. In the beginning, Branden starts off
with the simple things to address and then moves his way up throughout the book to explain the more
complicated things we deal with in our daily lives. What does it really mean to live ... Show more

How has Branden helped us to achieve a life of consciousness? Well for starters, he helps us in his
book with what he says in the different chapters in the book. One of the ways he helps us is by telling
us to sit down once in a while and just examine our lives. What is it that we are doing wrong and what
are we doing wrong? If we can do this with all the other stuff that Branden explains in his book such
as doing daily exercises with sentence stems and see what you come up with can help your life in the
simplest way. Everyone has those moments in their life when they do not know what is going on with
them or even why this thing is happening to them. Such moments can be a birth of a child, a death of a
friend or even the person waking up one day and coming to the realization that his or her life still has
plenty of decisions to make. These such moments can come at any point in a person s life whether
everything is going along fine or the person is having a tough time. The point of this is that Branden is
telling us to open up our eyes a little bit more and we can start living a conscious and easy going life.
Living in the western world as we know cannot be easy for anyone but how can Branden explain that
it actually could be easy to live in such a culture? All you

The Effects Of Alcohol On Alcohol Abuse Essay
Dependance on alcohol has been around ever since its creation and records of writing existed. From
Biblical commandments clearly restricting the drink due to its destructive and addictive nature to the
celebrities on tv screens and music devices glorifying the substance, alcohol has always been part of
various cultures. Being the number one drug problem in the U.S with over 12 million people
reportedly being alcoholics and of those 7 million being binge drinkers between the ages 12 20, it
comes as no surprise that beneath its shiny and glamorous exterior, this drink comes with its set of
problems ( Alcohol Abuse Statistics. ). In American society today many people think that being an
alcoholic simply stems from laziness and the lack of will to simply stop. There is much more to this
disorder than having one too many drinks at a bar that people are either ignorant to or just ignore for
the sake of judging other individuals. Just like famous English philosopher,William Penn, said: All
excess is ill, but drunkenness is of the worst sort. It spoils health, dismounts the mind, and unmans
men. It reveals secrets, is quarrelsome, lascivious, impudent, dangerous and mad. ( Alcoholism
Quotes. ). So with all these consequences associated with alcohol, why do people drink? What is
alcoholism? Who does it affect? Why does it happen? How can it be solved? Dependance on alcohol,
otherwise known as alcoholism is defined as a treatable chronic disease where your body becomes

Value Of Life In To Be Or Not To Be
Value of Life
Considering the value of our own or someone else s life is a difficult topic to talk about considering
the fact that every one views it differently. Some view life as a priceless gift that we as people should
cherish, while others can only see the value of someone s life in dollar signs. Every life is valuable no
matter what you come from, every life has value. Hamlet has pessimistic view on life, which he
consistently shows in his speech To Be or Not to Be. Throughout his speech, he goes back and forth
between the appeal of life and the peace he thinks he will find in death. To grunt and sweat under a
weary life explains the pain he is feeling going about his everyday life (Line 22). He realizes after the

Roger Ebert was a well known and respected movie critic, who passed away in 2013 from salivary
and thyroid cancer. In June of 2006, Ebert had to have his jaw removed due to cancerous tissue. He
lost the ability to eat, drink, and talk, his sole form of communication was through his writing.
Although he was going through all of these struggles, he still managed to see the beauty in life. He
remained positive and some would even say he was always smiling. What I am grateful for is the gift
of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter (p. 32). Ebert always valued his life even
through his hardships. He showed gratitude for the wonderful life he lived and the people around him
who supported and stood by him throughout his life. Amanda Ripley, author of What Is a Life Worth?
brings to light the value of someone s life in terms of big business corporations and even the federal
government. After 9/11 the families of the victims received compensation for the death of their loved
ones. But everyone received a different amount depending on what the government thought the value
of the victim s life was worth. If one man only made $22,000 a year he received a smaller
compensation than someone who

Great American Cities
In Jacob s book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, the various ways that city planning is
being practiced incorrectly are explored. One problem that cities are encountering is the decay of inner
city areas that are forming slums . City planners have been attempting to mend this problem by
spending money on new low income housing projects and developments. This tactic does not fix the
problem of high crime rates and low levels of education because these people stay in the same area
just in slightly better housing and still without proper education and opportunities. Another reason
why these problems do not improve is that planners focus on how a city should look and not on the
actual happenings in the real city. The author mentions

Essay on Community Oriented Policing (COP)
Introduction The police are usually charged with the great responsibility of ensuring that citizens are
living quality lives that are free of crime and fear. In order to perform this duty effectively, the police
need accurate and deeper knowledge of the citizens and issues they encounter in their daily lives. This
knowledge will not be easy to come by if the police work independently from the citizens. Over the
last several decades, police agencies have been working to gain the respect and the cooperation of the
communities they serve. Community Oriented Policing was introduced to bring a closer working
relationship between the citizens and the police.

Through this cooperation, it is possible to modify the environments that promote criminal behaviors.
The concept of COP is almost similar to that of Problem Oriented Policing (POP) apart from a few
differences. POP is a concept that involves critically examining pieces of community issues with the
aim of learning something new from the problem identified that will lead to more effective strategies
for dealing with crime (Zarka, 2007). POP is designed to identify and eliminate causes of reoccurring
crime and disorder that harm the community. Just like COP, the main goals of POP are to reduce crime
and maintain social order. POP replaces the traditional incident driven policing strategies and,
therefore, gave rise to the concept of Community policing (Reno Police Department, 1992).
COP and POP designs involve a more open relationship between the citizens and the police with the
aim of giving the police a more proactive role in community issues (Mirsky, 2009). Under community
policing, police are empowered to engage citizens in providing solutions to community s problems.
COP involves tactics such as foot and bike patrol, mini stations, and beat meetings among many
others. It also entails changes in police and community structures among a few other external changes.
These may include formation of community squad division and geographical organization.
COP and POP recognize that crime may be associated to micro social

The History of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt Essay
The History of Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt
Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt are both cradles of civilization. Both contributed greatly to human
development through their achievements, failures, peoples, scientific accomplishments, philosophies,
religions, and contributions.
Mesopotamia is a rich flat plain created by deposits from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. At the
southern end of this plain developed the first recognizable civilization, in the area known as Sumer. In
3000 B.C. Sumer contained a dozen or more city states, each ruled by its own king and worshiped its
own patron deity. The citizens of these city states were classified into three classes: nobles and priests,

The ruler of this dynasty was Ur Nammu. He was the first ruler to establish law codes and spell out
regulations and penalties.
Another great ruler was King Hammurabi of Babylon. He set up the Code of Hammurabi, which
includes 300 sections of carefully organized codes that ruled the Babylonians. Hammurabi was the
first example of a lawgiver. He provided one of the greatest written documents of his time: a stone
column with a long series of legal judgments published with his name. Hammurabi even designed
codes for the family life. He took care of the women and children in his society. He regulated marriage
with care to secure a stable life for future generations. He combined both law and religious belief to
create an ordered society. The Mesopotamians built on foundations laid by the Sumerians using their
sexagesimal system. They had multiplication tables, exponents, tables for computing interest, and
textbooks with problems for solution. They also developed systems of astrology and astronomy, and
even created a lunar calendar.
The early cities of Mesopotamia fell from one warlord to another, and were constantly changing,
unlike the kingdoms of Ancient Egypt that kept its stability. The Egyptians lived along the Nile River,
which probably made it easier to govern the people. The King was the owner and ruler of all Egypt
and was considered a god by the people. The economy was a royal monopoly, the peoples duties was
to serve the King. In the old Kingdom

The Effects Of Fructose On Body Weight Regulation
Anne Alexander, an editorial director of Prevention Magazine, published a diet book three years ago,
The Sugar Smart Diet, which reveals the potential cause of the epidemic of obesity and provides
feasible diets for weight loss. Alexander believes that added sugar directly contributes to continuous
weight gain in modern people. Over the past 40 years, the consumption of added sugar has increased
dramatically in processed foods, and the refined sugars have become critical and ubiquitous additives
for the food industry to enhance flavor and promote sales. At the same time, the number of obese
Americans climbed sharply as well (Harvard Health Letter, 2006). Therefore, Alexander reached the
conclusion that the food supply sugarjacked people and sugar overload became a public health crisis
that might result in obesity and many other diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Specifically, she stressed the strong adverse effects of fructose on body weight regulation. Fructose is
usually added to foods in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is the primary caloric
sweetener in America and is one of the main focuses of this diet book and this paper. The overall goal
articulated in the sugar smart diet is to gradually remove excessive added sugar intake, particularly
fructose, so that your body can regain a healthy sugar balance. The method contains two major stages,
which last 32 days in total. In stage one, people are deprived of

New Inclusive Approach To Bullying Essay
Over the past couple of decades, schools all across the nation have noticed a significant rise in the
amount of bullying taking place among their students. Two decades ago, bullying was often seen as a
rare occurrence, where small groups of parents sought protection for their children with the school
district , stated by Vikki Healy Ortiz, writer of the article New inclusive approach helps schools fight
bullying . However, the same cannot be said for our society in today s world. Our modern world has
advanced tremendously over the past few decades and there are even more opportunities for children
to be susceptible to feeling isolated from others because they are simply unique. In today s society,

Serra s Canonization
As Serra s canonization may have come as a moment of deep pride for Latinos and Catholic alike, it
was obviously also a source of great controversy for many Native Americans. They have since grown
weary of the deception and the corruption on the part of many different outfits of the Catholic Church.
In one particularly angering case from 1986, the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, California, where
Father Serra is buried, released a report that found no evidence of Native American mistreatment.
Despite the utter lack of respect and false research from that report, there are also proponents of the
Church who have acknowledged Serra s crimes against Native Americans, both then and now.

The acceptance and even glorification of his good deeds also played an immense role. Many have
touted Serra as a champion for Native American rights despite the clear historical evidence supporting
the idea that he was a forceful evangelizer who saw himself and the Spanish as superior beings to the
Native Americans. Although many say Serra was better than most missionaries of his time, it still
doesn t account for all the heinous crimes he committed. Robert M. Senkewicz, a history professor at
Santa Clara University rightfully said that while Serra represented the softer side of Spanish
colonialism, he still actively participated in a system in which violence and coercion were an integral
part. One could argue that the only real reason why this historical narrative hasn t been rightfully
rewritten is that its roots are in a religious institution. Not just any institution, the Catholic church
yields power and influence on a global scale. Yet again, we see the presence of both an oppressor as
well as the oppressed. The Catholic Church has been viewed as the defender of all that is right and just
throughout history because it claims that many of its unholy actions were carried out in the name of
God. As we study history to make sense of the present, we can often become naïve, accepting facts at
face value. With that said, we form silences just like in the historical narrative

Central Park Five Documentary
The documentary The Central Park Five discusses two New York nightmares through riveting
cinematography. The first being the rape and beating of a 28 year old white woman, inside Central
Park within the early morning hours of April 20th, 1989. She was found fighting for her life, bound,
gagged, practically naked, her head crushed and shirt soaked in her blood. For years she was known

The Growth And Success Of Canadian Airline Westjet Essay
Roger Solis MNGT 370 Dr. Dilek Yunlu WestJet Case Analysis Introduction This article discusses the
growth and success of Canadian airline WestJet. The company was established in 1994 by Clive
Beddoes who stumbled upon an opportunity to collaborate with fellow businessmen: Tim Morgan,
Don Bell, and Mark Hill to create a cost effective and very profitable airline in western Canada.
Together they achieved a concept of an airline that would be low fare but rich in culture to maintain its
integrity. With the help of David Needleman, president of Morris Air, the team developed a business
plan and visualized what is now WestJet Airlines. They built an integrative, financial model and
business plan which included only three aircraft and features of being: direct, cost effective, and short
haul. Within 30 days of constructing a business plan the needed capital was raised and the foundation
for WestJet airlines kicked off. In 1995 WestJet was established and began rapidly integrating into
eastern Canada. Problem WestJet s quick success posed an issue because even though it was centered
on culture eventually its concept would fail; the airline was growing very quickly and that could only
mean that it would be difficult to maintain the intimate focus while staying extremely profitable.
Critical Analysis In 1999 many changes occurred within the Canadian market of aviation. There was
merging between successful and struggling airlines, and even airlines that failed relatively

What I Thought Represented A Good Teacher
In my first field experience, I acquired many skills and knowledge in what I thought represented a
good teacher. In my total time spent in my observation hours I saw, two schools, eight different
teachers, and four different grade levels. The grades I viewed the most were first and second,
particularly because these are the grades I wish to teach in. For the majority of the time I spent with all
the grade levels, I found most of the teachers inspiring in some aspects of their lesson cycle, teaching
style and of course the creative décor around their rooms. I found that the most inspiring or beneficial
teachers were in Hondo, Texas, at Meyer elementary because of their unique structure and
compassionate curriculum for all of the students in which I want to pass on to my students in my
teaching future. At Meyer Elementary I first started with Mrs. Jessica Martinez s class, overall I found
her class to be well structured, organized and successful at most. But, She did not have her class quite
under control, and had difficulty retrieving their attention span, which I found odd with the multiple
teacher assistants she had, however I found that her lessons where quite intriguing to the students
knowledge. One lesson I found extremely stimulating was her word of the day, in which the students
compared and contrasted that specific vocabulary word throughout the activities in their school day.
The second teacher I observed was Mr. Gabe Cortez s P.E. class for first and second

once the good is provided, additional resource cost of another person consuming the good is zero and
to prevent anyone from consuming it is either very expensive or impossible. Consequently, recorded
music exhibits the economic properties of information. One of the fundamental economic properties
of digital information deals with its cost structure characterized by low reproduction costs. Another
noteworthy attribute that can be associated with music is its nature as an experience good. According
to the definition by Shapiro and Varian, (1988), music can be classified as an experience good since it
needs to be experienced to know what it is. According to other definitions by Hampe and Schwabe
(2001), music is a repetitive good, since unlike many other types of information, if one likes a song,
one is inclined to listen to it over and over again. It is essential to keep these economic properties in
mind when considering mobile music distribution.
2.2 History of innovation in the music industry
The history of music distribution sees its birth in the early days when music printing was the only
means of distribution. Subsequently, the ability of audio recording and duplication emerged,
eventually giving rise to mass production capabilities using various technologies as storage media
(Figure 2).
Despite the continuous stream of innovation, the record labels have remained largely

The Effects Of Beauty Standards On Body Image
The Effects of Beauty Standards
Understanding the effects of beauty standards to both men and women requires research of both sexes
and different orientations in regard to the influence the media has on them. While cultural standards
contribute to beauty standards, media carries most of the responsibility for swaying public opinion of
attractiveness. In order to find an answer as to why certain beauty standards currently exist, one must
examine the root cause: media.
Literature Reviewed
First Group of Studies Media and Body Image. In order to prevent continued negative effects on body
image by the media, it has been suggested that images that have been changed need to have labels to
prevent body dissatisfaction (Slater et al., 2012). Wang et al. (2010) provided evidence that both men
and women attempt to appear like the people portrayed in magazines. Men were influenced by health
and sports magazines, whereas women attempted to look like the models in entertainment and fashion
magazines (Wang, 2010). Participants in the Slater et al. (2012) study showed that warning labels may
help prevent the negative effects of media images, as they portray an unrealistic ideal for the human
body (Slater et al., 2012; Wang, 2010).
Second Groups of Studies Body Dissatisfaction. The development of removing pubic hair is caused by
body dissatisfaction, which relates to one s choice, physical attractiveness, and other key themes

The systems are to be installed in the Starshine Electronics Company.
The following is a diagram explaining the various steps involved in the purchasing process. The first
step involved is to identify the need for certain goods. These can be in form of raw materials or
equipments. The need must be felt and identified before taking any step to purchase the product. For
example, Starshine Electronics may want to offer transport as an after sale services to their customers.
In order to do this, a vehicle is required. The need of this vehicle is then identified and the first step in
purchasing the product is put into action.
The second step involves selecting the specific type of product that Starshine Electronics desires to
purchase according to their needs. There are various types of products that can be used to do a given
function and hence there is need to decide the product that suits you better. For example, there are
many types of vehicles in the market from different manufacturers and hence Starshine Electronics
should decide on the best model from a particular manufacturer to order. After selecting the product, a
purchase team needs to be appointed or selected. The formation of the team helps greatly in the
management of the purchase process through conducting research, analyzing the findings and
planning on the necessary technical specifications for the product and the process involved in
purchasing the product. Research about the product

Impact of Foreign Remittances on Economic Growth and...
INTRODUCTION:
Remittances typically refer to transfers of money by foreign workers to their home countries.
Remittances are not a new phenomenon in the world, being a normal associated to migration which
has always been a part of human history. Remittances are playing an important role in the economies
of many developing and low income countries. Pakistan is a labour abundant country; hence, as
neoclassical theory shows, if workers are unable to find jobs and/or wages to satisfy their needs, they

are sent by millions of Pakistanis working abroad. For capital deficient countries, like Pakistan,
worker s remittances are considered to be an important source of foreign exchange. These remittances
have a positive impact on Pakistan s economy through improved balance of payments position and
reduced dependence on external borrowing. Significant flows of remittances also helped Pakistan
recover from the adverse effects of oil price shocks, reduced the unemployment problem, and
improved standard of living of recipient households.

My Son, My Executioner Essay
My Son, My Executioner
In the Donald Hall poem, My Son, My Executioner, Hall depicted a father who has grown old,
holding their young child in their arms. Hall portrayed strong imagery of a fatherly figure giving up
everything to care for his young child. The tone of the poem is both happy and dark. Hall s theme
showed that once a person has a child, the parent s life is completely changed. My Son, My
Executioner is a very well written poem with a deep, true meaning that readers could relate to. The
imagery helps Hall depict a father caring for their young child. Hall is first telling the reader that the
father is with his child. The child seems to be very young because the father takes the child in his

This poem could either be taken in a happy tone or a dark tone. The main theme Hall is trying to
express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, My son, my
executioner, is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent s life is taken away.
Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent s life is made eternal through their child forever. The father
knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the child gets bigger and
stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. Sweet death, small son, our instrument/of immortality.
Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That day the child was born, their lives
were changed and it will never be the same again. We twenty five and twenty two. In conclusion,
Donald Hall portrays a father who has grown old, holding their young child in their arms. . The way
Hall used imagery, showed the reader a fatherly figure that gives up everything to care for his son. The
tone of the poem was important because it let the reader know that the poem could be seen as happy or
dark. The theme showed the readers that once they have a child, their lives are changed forever. My
Son, My Executioner is a very well written poem with a deep, true meaning that readers, along with

Herman Melville s Story, Bartleby, the Scrivener Essay
In Herman Melville s short story, Bartleby, the Scrivener, the narrator s attitude towards Bartleby is
constantly changing, the narrator s attitude is conveyed through the author s use of literary elements
such as; diction descriptive and comical, point of view first person, and tone confusion and sadness.
One of the literary elements that Melville uses that convey the narrator s attitude towards Bartleby is
diction. The author s diction in this short story is very descriptive and is also slightly comical. One of
the ways this is used is when the author gently mocks the narrator by having him expose his flaws
through his own words. For example, when the narrator talks of John Jacob Astor, a well respected

Diction is just one of the literary elements used in this short story which convey the narrator s attitude
towards Bartleby. Another literary element that is used to convey the narrator s attitude towards
Bartleby is through point of view. In Bartleby, the Scrivener the point of view that is used is that of
first person narration. By Melville s use of first person narration it allows us to get close to Bartleby
but still be confused and in awe of him and since we see him through the eyes of his employer we can
quickly identify with the narrator s confusing feelings over Bartleby. An example of this appears on
page 127 in paragraph 6; I sat awhile in perfect silence, rallying my stunned faculties. Immediately it
occurred to me that my ears had deceived me, or Bartleby had entirely misunderstood my meaning. I
repeated my request in the clearest tone I could assume; but in quite as clear a one came the previous
reply, I would prefer not to. Here Bartleby has just refused orders from his boss who sits at his desk
stunned at wheat he has just heard. This is not the only time throughout the story in which Bartleby
does this and always with the same words; I would prefer not to which only frustrates and confuses
the narrator. Another contributor to the narrator s growing

Throughout the course of my history career, which is not very long, teachers and professors have
always focused on the point that General Grant was a butchering alcoholic who won the war solely on
the account of his stubborn personality. And on the other hand, teachers portrayed General Lee as a
masterful strategist, who used Christian values in order to win the rebellion. However, in Fuller s

Is this book biased? Of course, but as Fuller explains in the preface of the book, his instinctive
premise was to show that Lee was the superior General because, he was taught this in his previous
education, where he later states, ...so much for school education. (Page 8)
As an overview of the book, Fuller does not indulge in reacting all of the battles of the war, that would
be too much material. Instead, he sets up some of the battles in aspect of format, which he used to
reenact the strategies that were influenced by the men s personalities. For instance, after the battle of
Bull Run General Lee s inability to communicate effectively will be his downfall. Floyd states, his
[Lee] subordinates were at loggerheads, his personality at once crippled his generalship, for he refused
to take command, that is to say he refused to impose his will upon them and so established unity of
direction. (137)
The direct example of this occurs on August 7, 1861, when Lee unofficially gave commander Wise,
the right to give an order. However, since this was going against the chain of command, the other
commander, Floyd, justifiably denounced this order and stated that it should come from Lee himself,
not an equal.(137) Other situations, between these two other commanders, show how Lee s patience
for insubordination, or miscommunication, helped to cripple his unity of command. If Lee would have

Upper Class of Canterbury Tales
Some ill hearted people use corruption to achieve the highest place in society. Even in the 1600 s
Shakespeare writes about how corruption can shape a society. Corruption can cause an unbalance of
power in the wrong places. Geoffrey Chaucer writes about certain classes in the fourteenth century.
Chaucer uses the upper class in Canterbury Tales to show the importance of corruption through the
following characters: The Friar, the Pardoner, and the Summoner.
The Friar is a sneaky and evil beggar that associates with the upper class, which makes him part of the
corruption. He also enjoyed befriending comely young women and wealthy men, (Morgan) as he

The Summoner was known for knowing everything about everyone which really played to his
advantage. He could bring duress on any young fellow in the diocese. (114) The Summoner s job was
to summon people to the church for committing sins. Since he knew everything about everyone he
would accept bribes from people to revoke their summons. The Summoner has no hint of a personality
beyond [his] life of predatory malfeasance. (Salter) He devotes his life to corruptly earning money and
becoming as wealthy as he can. Making his way to the upper class, the Summoner destroys the church
system by using his power to help his finances. The Friar s, Pardoner s, and Summoner s power and
position in Canterbury Tales helps them corrupt their way to the top of the class. Each of these
characters have a common motive: wealth. Money seems to drive people to do things most people
would not do. The upper class of any society is usually the people with the most money. In order for
these characters to be in the upper class they had to use their power and position to their advantage.

After years of delayed independence the U.S. finally granted the Phillipines independence on July 4,

Although President McKinley tried to avoid a war with Spain it seemed to be inevitable. The trouble
began with journalism exploiting Spanish atrocities. Then, a battleship blew up and was falsely
identified as a Spanish attack. The U.S. first took hold of a Spanish colony (the Philippines) which it
later used as a stepping stone to trade with other countries. Then, they fought battles in Cuba (another
Spanish colony) and conquered that along with Puerto Rico. By winning the Spanish American War
the U.S. gained a position as an imperialist country.
After much bloodshed the United States secured it s position as an imperialist and world power.
Presidents such as Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson came under power and called for expansion and
imperialism all over the globe. The United States choice of action in the Philippines was just one
example of it s imperialistic characteristics. The Spanish American War brought a lot of power to the
United States. During the early 20th century the United States of America became and stayed an

EuripidesMedea, Hippolytus, And Electra
The Minds of Euripides s Creations Upon a first inspection of Euripides s Medea, Hippolytus, and
Electra, women were depicted as a vicious brood for the only purpose of bringing men to their ruin.
However, this was not the case at all. Euripides portrayed women as downtrodden individuals because
of the scorned love they had experienced. Love was the main factor in all of these plays. In addition,
Euripides presented how women were influenced by their emotions. Euripides s Medea characterized
a woman, Medea, who was driven by her anger at Jason s betrayal to perform atrocious acts. She was
grief stricken because Jason treated her like a harlot and broke her heart. She was stricken by the
sinful desire of revenge that she was even willing to murder her own children to make Jason pay for
his actions for marrying another woman (Medea 1 4). She felt betrayed by Jason because she
sacrificed everything familiar to her to journey across the vast seas to be with him (Medea 13 14).
Medea had a right to want revenge because she knew that Jason was cheating on her with another
woman. Jason attempted to justify his new marriage by pointing out that the only reason he was
marrying this other woman was to support his children and her in the best possible way (Medea 15
17). Jason s endeavors only added fuel to Medea s loathing. He claimed that all of his actions were
just, and Medea was only jealous because she was not copulating with him anymore. He was being

this goes back to the strategies used in the 50s and 60s to invoke fear simmon from Nydaily news

An Epidemic Of Baseball Spectator Injuries
Introduction: There is an epidemic of baseball spectator injuries. With an estimated 1,750 fan injuries
per year, there is serious cause for concern regarding the safety of the citizenry in Gallatin. Because
there are a number of professional, semi professional, and recreational baseball parks, including a
minor league park in Sen. Gallatin s district, it is important to consider enacting legislation to address
this issue. Some states, such as New York, have created the Baseball Rule through judicial precedent,

the field owners have a legitimate interest leaving certain areas uncovered. New Jersey Baseball
Spectator Safety Act of 2006 sets forth a nearly identical rule, however, the Baseball Rule is codified
legislatively, rather than as a legal precedent as it is in New York. The law s authors state that their

what constitute[s] reasonable safety measures evolves and should be injected into future cases.
However, the majority ruling prevents this from happening by prescribing specific guidelines that are
certain to become outdated, if it is not already. Further, it criticizes the majority s lack of attention to
the particular facts of a case. In Akins, for example, the

  • 2. The, The Ancient Olympics, By Nigel Spivey In the monograph, The Ancient Olympics, Nigel Spivey examines how culture encourages and shapes the Olympic Games, as well as become a safe haven for ancient Greece during times of conflict. This multifaceted monograph demonstrates that the societal behavior of the Athenians shifted within prescribed roles regarding the use of violence, the imagery of true beauty, and the love for Greece s youth during the games. In addition to shedding light on society s enlightening interpretation of what occurs within the gymnasia, the Olympic Games redirect a whole new meaning to conflicts that arise on and off the Olympic stage. Although the concept of a multifaceted culture revolving around incessant conflict is not new to the study of ancient Greece, it is Spivey s unique analysis of the impact of the Olympic Games that make his argument so compelling to his readers. Specifically, Spivey argues that the behaviors captured during the Olympic games in ancient Greece and Rome are synonymous with the shifts in cultural norms observed , as well as society s reactions to incessant conflict surrounding ancient Greece, within and outside of the Olympic gymnasia. In order to conceptualize the very shift in cultural norms that took place during the Olympic Games within ancient history, Nigel Spivey claims in his monograph that the societal interpretation of the Games correlates to culturally prescribed roles regarding strife as a guiding principle of existence, the imagery of true masculinity, ... These questions are typical questions that most Americans might be asking themselves for the past few years. For years, the American eye has been opened to everyday threats of being watched, monitored and spied on by the government. For some, this may not have come off as shocking as it may have had to other, but the problem is still there and problem is still there. The problem Americans face is the problem of being under constant surveillance by our trusted leaders. In America, government surveillance needs to be reduced. The Marriage of Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787) are operas he composed with words in Italian. The Magic Flute (1791) has German words. Each of these contains arias (beautiful melodies for singers), recitative (Rapidly sung dialogue), ensembles in which several people sing at the same time, and choruses. The orchestra provides an ever changing expressive accompaniment. The drama ranges from comedy to tragedy. Mozart wrote over forty symphonies, many of which are performed today. Some originally were overtures (orchestral introductions) for operas, and last only a few minutes. His later symphonies, which are the most popular, are full length orchestral compositions that last twenty to thirty minutes. Most of them consist of four sections. Mozart s last and most famous symphony, Number 41 (1788), is nicknamed the Jupiter. Mozart composed a great amount of church music, most of it for performance at the Salzburg Cathedral. He wrote Masses and shorter pieces called motets; and he set psalms to music, especially for the afternoon or evening service. The music is beautiful and varied. It includes choral and solo parts, usually with accompaniment by organ and orchestra. Mozart s best known sacred work is the Requiem (Mass for the Dead). It comes from the 2 Greek words archaÄ«os, meaning ancient, and ptéryx, meaning wing. The Dodo bird or the flightless bird is another example of an extinct species that is included in this paper. The archaeopteryx, once thought of as the First Bird or Urvogel was a avian/reptile. The Archaeopteryx was believed to live about 150 million years ago, towards the end of the Jurassic period. The Avian dinosaur was a carnivore and scientist believe it prayed on small animals, which it would pick up in its talons. It also had wings like any other avian, but scientist are not completely sure if it could fly, glide or it even be another type of flightless bird, like the Dodo. The structure of the reptilian/ avian has many similarities and differences to the modern bird, which is why it s understandable that the scientist were not sure what to categorize the creature. It seems that a good portion of the nation s population are afraid of GMOs, and unfortunately many people that are anti GMO are very under informed in what or how GMO is created. According to World Health Organization (WHO), genetically modified organisms are animals, plants, or prokaryotes in which their DNA is altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating or natural recombination.1 By this definition, the only difference between GMO and naturally occurring organisms is one is made in a laboratory while the other is created through a natural process like mating. The process in which a GMO is produced, strictly speaking, is very simple. There are only three things needed to accomplish a modified organism and these are: the insert gene, target species, and vector(HudsonAlpha)2. To initiate the process, the insert gene must be cut and isolated through restriction enzymes, then transferred to the target gene, thereby becoming the vector2. In 1978, Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer introduced recombinant DNA technology that resulted in the biotechnology boom (Ballard et al.)3 and with it gave rise to genetic engineering. From Biblical commandments clearly restricting the drink due to its destructive and addictive nature to the celebrities on tv screens and music devices glorifying the substance, alcohol has always been part of various cultures. Being the number one drug problem in the U.S with over 12 million people reportedly being alcoholics and of those 7 million being binge drinkers between the ages 12 20, it comes as no surprise that beneath its shiny and glamorous exterior, this drink comes with its set of problems ( Alcohol Abuse Statistics. ). In American society today many people think that being an alcoholic simply stems from laziness and the lack of will to simply stop. There is much more to this disorder than having one too many drinks at a bar that people are either ignorant to or just ignore for the sake of judging other individuals. Just like famous English philosopher,William Penn, said: All excess is ill, but drunkenness is of the worst sort. It spoils health, dismounts the mind, and unmans men. It reveals secrets, is quarrelsome, lascivious, impudent, dangerous and mad. ( Alcoholism Quotes. ). So with all these consequences associated with alcohol, why do people drink? What is alcoholism? Who does it affect? Why does it happen? How can it be solved? Dependance on alcohol, otherwise known as alcoholism is defined as a treatable chronic disease where your body becomes ... POP is designed to identify and eliminate causes of reoccurring crime and disorder that harm the community. Just like COP, the main goals of POP are to reduce crime and maintain social order. The Effects Of Fructose On Body Weight Regulation Anne Alexander, an editorial director of Prevention Magazine, published a diet book three years ago, The Sugar Smart Diet, which reveals the potential cause of the epidemic of obesity and provides feasible diets for weight loss. Alexander believes that added sugar directly contributes to continuous weight gain in modern people. Over the past 40 years, the consumption of added sugar has increased dramatically in processed foods, and the refined sugars have become critical and ubiquitous additives for the food industry to enhance flavor and promote sales. Senkewicz, a history professor at Santa Clara University rightfully said that while Serra represented the softer side of Spanish colonialism, he still actively participated in a system in which violence and coercion were an integral part. One could argue that the only real reason why this historical narrative hasn t been rightfully rewritten is that its roots are in a religious institution. Not just any institution, the Catholic church yields power and influence on a global scale. Yet again, we see the presence of both an oppressor as well as the oppressed. The company was established in 1994 by Clive Beddoes who stumbled upon an opportunity to collaborate with fellow businessmen: Tim Morgan, Don Bell, and Mark Hill to create a cost effective and very profitable airline in western Canada. Together they achieved a concept of an airline that would be low fare but rich in culture to maintain its integrity. With the help of David Needleman, president of Morris Air, the team developed a business plan and visualized what is now WestJet Airlines. They built an integrative, financial model and business plan which included only three aircraft and features of being: direct, cost effective, and short haul. Within 30 days of constructing a business plan the needed capital was raised and the foundation for WestJet airlines kicked off. In 1995 WestJet was established and began rapidly integrating into eastern Canada. Problem WestJet s quick success posed an issue because even though it was centered on culture eventually its concept would fail; the airline was growing very quickly and that could only mean that it would be difficult to maintain the intimate focus while staying extremely profitable. The grades I viewed the most were first and second, particularly because these are the grades I wish to teach in. For the majority of the time I spent with all the grade levels, I found most of the teachers inspiring in some aspects of their lesson cycle, teaching style and of course the creative décor around their rooms. I found that the most inspiring or beneficial teachers were in Hondo, Texas, at Meyer elementary because of their unique structure and compassionate curriculum for all of the students in which I want to pass on to my students in my teaching future. At Meyer Elementary I first started with Mrs. Jessica Martinez s class, overall I found her class to be well structured, organized and successful at most. But, She did not have her class quite under control, and had difficulty retrieving their attention span, which I found odd with the multiple teacher assistants she had, however I found that her lessons where quite intriguing to the students knowledge. One lesson I found extremely stimulating was her word of the day, in which the students compared and contrasted that specific vocabulary word throughout the activities in their school day. Consequently, recorded music exhibits the economic properties of information. One of the fundamental economic properties of digital information deals with its cost structure characterized by low reproduction costs. Another noteworthy attribute that can be associated with music is its nature as an experience good. According to the definition by Shapiro and Varian, (1988), music can be classified as an experience good since it needs to be experienced to know what it is. According to other definitions by Hampe and Schwabe (2001), music is a repetitive good, since unlike many other types of information, if one likes a song, one is inclined to listen to it over and over again. It is essential to keep these economic properties in mind when considering mobile music distribution. 2.2 History of innovation in the music industry The history of music distribution sees its birth in the early days when music printing was the only means of distribution. Subsequently, the ability of audio recording and duplication emerged, eventually giving rise to mass production capabilities using various technologies as storage media (Figure 2). The Effects Of Beauty Standards On Body Image The Effects of Beauty Standards Understanding the effects of beauty standards to both men and women requires research of both sexes and different orientations in regard to the influence the media has on them. While cultural standards contribute to beauty standards, media carries most of the responsibility for swaying public opinion of attractiveness. In order to find an answer as to why certain beauty standards currently exist, one must examine the root cause: media. Literature Reviewed First Group of Studies Media and Body Image. In order to prevent continued negative effects on body image by the media, it has been suggested that images that have been changed need to have labels to prevent body dissatisfaction (Slater et al., 2012). Wang et al. (2010) provided evidence that both men and women attempt to appear like the people portrayed in magazines. Men were influenced by health and sports magazines, whereas women attempted to look like the models in entertainment and fashion magazines (Wang, 2010). Participants in the Slater et al. This poem could either be taken in a happy tone or a dark tone. The main theme Hall is trying to express is that once a person has a child, their lives are changed forever. In the first line, My son, my executioner, is saying that once a child comes into the world, in a sense the parent s life is taken away. Yet as morbid as that sounds, the parent s life is made eternal through their child forever. The father knows his time is now focused on his son. There is a reversal of roles, as the child gets bigger and stronger, the father gets weaker and will die. Sweet death, small son, our instrument/of immortality. Another problem was that the parents had their child young. That day the child was born, their lives were changed and it will never be the same again. We twenty five and twenty two. EuripidesMedea, Hippolytus, And Electra The Minds of Euripides s Creations Upon a first inspection of Euripides s Medea, Hippolytus, and Electra, women were depicted as a vicious brood for the only purpose of bringing men to their ruin. However, this was not the case at all. Euripides portrayed women as downtrodden individuals because of the scorned love they had experienced. Love was the main factor in all of these plays. In addition, Euripides presented how women were influenced by their emotions. Euripides s Medea characterized a woman, Medea, who was driven by her anger at Jason s betrayal to perform atrocious acts. She was grief stricken because Jason treated her like a harlot and broke her heart. She was stricken by the sinful desire of revenge that she was even willing to murder her own children to make Jason pay for his actions for marrying another woman (Medea 1 4). She felt betrayed by Jason because she sacrificed everything familiar to her to journey across the vast seas to be with him (Medea 13 14). Medea had a right to want revenge because she knew that Jason was cheating on her with another woman. Jason attempted to justify his new marriage by pointing out that the only reason he was marrying this other woman was to support his children and her in the best possible way (Medea 15 17).
