The Policies of Lenin and Stalin Essay
Identified within this study is the argument that whilst many of Lenin s theories and practices were
continued under Stalin, many were in fact developed and extended to new levels, possibly reflecting
different motives: what Pipes refers to as Stalin s personality of excesses . Although for many years,
numerous historians including both members of the Western school of thought (such as Pipes), along
with the official Soviet historians of the time believed that Stalin was the natural heir of Lenin,
opinions have changed with time. As more evidence came out of Stalin s mass atrocities, the Soviet
historians soon began to see Stalin as the betrayer of the revolution as Trotsky had always maintained,

According to this view, had Lenin lived, these policies would probably have been reversed as political
and economic stability was restored, and certainly would not have given rise to the mass
extermination of millions of peasants and party members, which prevailed under Stalin in the 1930s.
In scrutinising the actions of Stalin, I have examined especially how they differed from those of
Lenin, and in what ways the motives for similar actions changed. One aspect of continuity is reflected
in the control and influence that both Lenin and Stalin had over their parties. In 1921, Lenin
effectively destroyed democracy in the party through his ban of factionalism. Although this was used
to end the problem of splits (during the crisis of the same year), many see it as a key factor in allowing
Stalin to rise to power. Stalin often accused people of factionalism (e.g. Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev)
as a response to any challenges to his authority. It also created a situation that allowed the party
leadership to do what it wanted and dismiss any opposition. Pipes argues that as a result of this, the
Bolsheviks were carefully coerced into always following Lenin s will, and that his policy of
democratic centralism was merely a façade like many of the other

Examples Of Overcoming Fear
The Prison Within Overcoming fear
Overcoming fear introduction
There is a prison that has an inmate population in the billions. It s a prison without walls, without
barbed wire, without guards and without any physical barrier. But it is the most effective prison in the
whole world. Few escape it, but those who do find real and lasting freedom.
That prison is in our minds. It is a prison that holds back our initiative, our talent, our ability to
express ourselves and, most of all, it holds back the fulfilment of our full potential as human beings.
That prison is fear. Our lives today are controlled by fear more than we know. Fear controls the
choices we make, our actions, our habits and even our destinies. Fear has become one of the greatest

It will absolutely stop you from living a life that you desire. Recognise it. Conquer it. Eleanor
Roosevelt s advice is that you gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which
you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.
Overcoming fear there s nothing to fear but fear itself
I m sure you have had an experience in the past when you really feared something. After doing it how
did you feel. Silly? Stupid? The feeling is often one of that wasn t so hard after all. I don t know what
I was afraid of. Trying to fight fear is like trying to fight the dark. You can t do it. The way to get rid of
darkness is to bring in the light. The way to get rid of your fears is to conquer them. Do the thing you
fear to do and keep on doing it... that is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer
fear ( Dale Carnegie).
Overcoming fear you can do it today
Go ahead and start that business you want to start. Go ahead and study what you really want to study.
Go ahead and become a musician, poet, artist, fashion designer or whatever else you want to do. Sure
you might fail, but you might succeed too. Take the risk today and conquer your fears. Do you want to

Living and Coping with Cystic Fibrosis in the South Asian...
A widely accepted Caucasian disease has since changed; as cases of its existence are appearing in the
South Asian Population (Orenstein, Rosenstein and Stern, 2000). First discovered in 1989, Cystic
Fibrosis (CF) is a genetically predetermined condition, its presences is lifelong and highly complex,
which is why many CF sufferers and families develop various mechanisms in order to adapt to the
condition (Tippingemail, Scholes, Cox, 2010). Cystic Fibrosis causes the body to develop thick, sticky
mucus which clogs the lungs and affects other organs in the body, mainly the pancreas. The layer of
mucus if untreated develops in to a chronic infection which can be detrimental. The pancreas of a CF
patient is most vulnerable, once the mucus has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discussions of such issues suggest that other external factors may be influencing the decisions and
maintenance of many CF patients. For instance CF patients need to prioritise the way in which they
self manage their treatment, this can be difficult when trying to balance family, work, education and
other responsibilities and their levels of adherence may fluctuate (Sawicki, Sellers, Robinson, 2009).
These fluctuations can be detrimental to their condition and may result in hospitalisation, causing
additional disruptions in their daily life. However, engaging in so called normal activities might
therefore also reinforce a sense of being healthy and having a nondifferent identity. Conquering a
healthy balance is one which CF patients may need to adopt. One of the significant points from
McCormick et al, (2005) research underlined the substantial clinical differences for females in
comparison to males. The authors found that females had worst disease severity than males. Why
might this difference be occurring? In 2009 Besier, Schmitz and Goldbeck, investigated the effects of
relationship status on life satisfaction, as numerous findings suggest that despite the relationship
status, many females CF patients still reported worse quality of life scores than males (Walters,
Britton, Hodson, 1993). Besier et al, (2009) administrated the Life satisfaction questionnaire on a
sample of 243 CF (129

Radar Intrusion Detection System ( Ids )
 INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEM (IDS): The IDS is a type of security management system for
computers and networks. It gathers and analyzes the information from different areas within the
computer or a network in order to identify possible security threats, which may include both intrusions
and misuse[[98] , [99]]. It is installed between the firewall and personal computer or server as shown
in figure 7. The moment the IDS detects the attacks, an alarm is produced that informs the user of the
undergoing attacks. It has three core parts packet sniffing, detection and reporting.
Figure 7: Intrusion Detection System
According to the method of detection , IDS can be divided into: Anomaly and Misuse based detection.
After the construction of the normal pattern the data is classified into attacked data if it doesn t belong
to normal data. Misused detection is used to detect the attacks in different ways. Anomaly based
detection often has high false alarm rate due to the changeful attack patterns. Its accuracy rate is low
as compared to the Misuse based detection .The accuracy rate of misuse based detection is high
because the

The Theories And Models Of Behavior And Behavior Change
Mirror published a story about a father and husband who totally spied members of his family. [1] He
installed an application on their mobile devices which allowed him to control their location, to read
their emails, text messages. This application allows him even to listen to their conversations and to see
who they are with via camera. While this story makes an impression as being fabricated, it could serve
as a basis to deliberate about aspects of human nature. Though the husband s misdeed is at least
controversial from legal and ethical point of view, nevertheless the causative effects of his behaviour
is a matter of concern in this paper. I will talk about the human behaviour first, about how it is
perceived from a scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can find out, that he is a web developer and a technology geek. We can also find that his wife
knew about the application and that she witnessed couple of times when the application was used. We
cannot specify neither genetic factors or core faith. We can assume that the story is about typical
British family and in this way, we can assume the British culture and social norms are the background
of the story. We know very little about real husband s attitude. He confessed that safety was his
concern. But we don t know whether he is honest and whether this is the whole truth. Therefore, I
think that it doesn t make sense to try and analyse the story in depth, because the story is rather
shallow. However, basing on the story we can explore some what if scenarios, like what if the wife
didn t know about the application, what if the husband lied and his intentions was not so harmless as
he explained. The interesting part of the story is that it touches the problem which appeared quite
recently. If we take into account permanent character of husband s espionage, and if we make an
assumption that it was done without explicit consent of his wife and his children, then this story
illustrates a problem which has become quite prevalent lately a stalking. I m going to explore this
problem in more detail and I will try to find its relevance to the story mentioned above. I will also try
to identify causative

The Negative Effects Of Violence In Television And Mass...
With 59 dead and 527 injured, the Las Vegas shooting earlier this month was one of the deadliest mass
shootings in American history. With no immediately apparent motive, it begs the question in people as
to what might possess a person to go out and commit such a heinous crime. Indeed, the question has
dogged the American populace ever since the invention of the modern mass shooting, and even before,
attached to other senseless violent atrocities. Human brains are wired to look for causality in
meaningless events as a survival mechanism, so they have a tendency to find it in places where it
actually never existed in the first place. This is why violence in television and video games has come
under fire in recent years as their influence expands, despite evidence that such phony violence does
not beget real violence and may, in fact, be beneficial to a person s well being.
Firstly, it should be noted that the studies people often cite when attempting to prove media violence
has negative effects on behavior are flawed and inconsistent. In a review of publications on the subject
conducted by psychologist Jonathan L. Freedman, he found that of the 2,500 publications, there were
only 200 pieces of non duplicated research among them, stemming from places of varying scientific
legitimacy. The ways in which many of these studies are conducted can lead to skewed results in favor
of the hypothesis the researchers want to prove. When studying how violent media consumption

Theories of ethical decision making assume it is a process that is special, or different in some regard
from typical individual decision making. Empirical results of the most widely known theories in the
field of business ethics contain numerous inconsistencies and contradictions. In an attempt to assess
why we continue to lack understanding of how individuals make ethical decisions at work, an
inductive study of ethical decision making was conducted. The results of this preliminary study
suggest that ethical decision making might not be meaningfully special or different from other
decision making processes. The implications of this research are potentially significant in that they
challenge the fundamental assumption of existing ethical decision making research. This research
could serve as an impetus for further examination of whether ethical decision making is meaningfully
different from other decision making processes. Such studies could create new directions for the field
of business ethics.

Of Mice And Men Freudian Analysis Essay
Freudian Analysis: Of Mice and Men Introduction In John Steinbeck s book of Mouse and Men a
story that was based on the relationships between people, Steinbeck tackles issues of race relations the
dynamics and stereotypes of men and women, but unlike other authors of his time included a character
facing a form of mental illness. Throughout the book we see Lennie Small a seemingly innocent giant
reliance on a quick talking dreamer who goes by the name of George Smith. American society was
never truly ready to face mental illness, and Steinbeck wanted to open the dialogue. With this rejection
of the mentally ill as normal beings in society psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud had his own views on
the capacity and formation of mental illnesses. Views ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a few treatments for mental diseases, the most common treatment was hot and cold continuous
baths, lobotomies that that were introduced in the 1930s and usually resulted in permant brain damage.
What made Lennie s character different? Is the fact that he wasn t a hospital patient or in an asylum he
is able to function in the outside world and had George to help hide his illness. On the Ranch Lennie is
seen as the huge hulk of a man that could lift anything staying strong with the belief that the mental ill
is only good for their physical prowess. Every few times have we heard Lennie speak about his
feelings and stand up for himself, George was his mouth peace disguising Lennie s developmental
(lack of speech) delay as being from an accident he got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a
kid this is similar to saying he was dropped when he was a baby. These phrases are used to sugarcoat
or give an excuse for why someone like Lennie, behaves the way he does, the lesser of two evils.
Americans would rather their child to be in an accident than be born with a mental illness. Because
many American didn t want to accept the fact that there were mentally ill people outside of asylums,

Button Button Analysis
In, Button, Button, the author, Richard Matheson introduces Norma and Arthur Lewis. The button
causes temptations that lead to conflicts between the two characters. In the narrative, Mr. Steward
arrives at the house and tells them about the button. If one of them pushes the button, someone will
die, and they will receive a grand total of $50,000. This causes a dramatic conflict between the two. It
brings the worst out of the two of them, causing jealousy, selfishness, and acquisitiveness. Norma has
to make a decision whether to press the button or not. She contemplates and then eventually to press
the button. Matheson uses dialogue, inner thinking, description, and symbolism to develop the central
conflicts in the story and to accentuate how relationships break off even in the best circumstances.
Richard Matheson uses dialogue to develop conflict in the story. The use of dialogue is utilized to
represent situational irony. In Button, Button the text states:
You said I wouldn t know the one that died.
My dear lady... Do you really think you knew your husband? (Matheson 111).
Additionally, this conversation indicates the situational irony revealed by between the two characters:
Norma and Mr. Steward. Mrs. Lewis didn t believe her husband would be the one that dies. She didn t
realize that she was so self absorbed and never truly knew her husband. This conversation between
two characters leaves the readers on a cliffhanger. Readers were also not aware that Mr. Lewis would

A Long Way Gone Freedom Analysis
Since the beginning of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the protagonist of the novel Ishmael
endeavors to flee from the hardships enkindled by the RUF rebel organization that has amalgamated
the country of Sierra Leone, officially making it a war zone. Moreover, for more than two years
Ishmael has attempted to escape from the rebels, moving from village to village, rummaging through
abandoned homes. Seemingly, the rebels would make their way to Ishmael, sweeping all villages.
Deprived of food or any sign of hope surviving as a lone wolf , Ishmael enlisted in the Army of Sierra
Leone to fight against the radical organization. Ishmael risked his life for the prime purpose of
surviving and to pursue freedom. Furthermore, self determination was one of the reasons for such
bravery, but it was also due to specific objects that aided in Ishmael s journey for freedom.
Nonetheless, in his literary work, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses
symbols to underscore his central theme of oppression and/or freedom. The most evident symbols that
accentuate the theme of oppression and/or freedom are the moon, the rap cassette tape, and the AK 47.
The moon s role in Ishmael s journey is very prominent, as it exhibits the theme of freedom also
oppression in the novel. When Ishmael is in dire need of comfort he looks to the moon for help when
struggling to survive the civil war alone. Furthermore, the moon for many in Sierra Leone portray the
moon as a symbol of peace

Hypnosis And Meditation At The County Fair
Hypnosis and meditation. When I think of these two words very vivid, and perhaps stereotyped,
images come to mind. For instance, hypnosis reminds me of watching a hypnotist at the county fair. I
think of how he claimed to randomly select ten volunteers from the audience, and sat them in a
straight line of folding chairs facing the audience. Throughout his half hour performance he
hypnotized his volunteers and commanded them to perform odd tasks and act like various barnyard
animals. The audience roared with laugher as one man performed the chicken dance with intense
gusto. As on the other side of the stage, a woman ran around smelling the armpits of the other
volunteers. On the other hand, a starkly different image comes to mind when ... Show more content on

I also learned the method can be used to treat real medical conditions like high blood pressure and
insomnia. The article talked about using the techniques of measured breathing and imagining calming
surroundings. Telling you to completely immerse yourself in this scene, and stay there for at least five

communication skills, performance anxiety, focussing, and clear thinking (SMS).
While the benefits sounded fantastic, and I did want to try it, I knew I would have a hard time being
able to do this exercise successfully on my own with my busy brain. With this in mind I went

through a hypnosis session to reduce stress. In the beginning she tells you to lie down and close your

There is no better way to describe the year 1968 than as important, tumultuous, and just flat out crazy.
The three articles this time around looked at the whole year and outlined different important events
and ideas that came about during this time. I wanted to touch on the Tet offensive, the different social
movements of the time and the role of the media. All of these aspects came together to form the

what is happening in the United States, but he always points out something that makes the Germans

Interpretation of Survey Results
INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY RESULTS As part of the requirements in order to complete this
paper, I took three surveys to determine my stand on change itself. I ve known that change is the only
constant thing in life. People change, situations change, and even nature changes. We have to be
prepared for the changes to come around us or we will not be able to make it. In fact, science itself
tells us that those who can adapt most to change will those who survive. In the survey entitled Are You
Tolerant of Change? , I was able to score 66. This score falls on the moderate level of tolerance for
change. But, looking at the number, it s pretty closer to lower tolerance compared to high level of
tolerance. The questions in these survey mostly pertained to my reaction in work changes. I might say
that the result is quite spot on. Although I am quite moderately tolerant to change, I feel quite
uncertain, especially with work changes because I know for a fact that not all the time, things end up
positively for us employees. With all the economic uncertainties today, you quite never know when
you re going to be laid off and that s quite scary. Still, the results show that I can at least tolerate
change and I hope that s enough to get me through. For the survey entitled An Assessment of Low
Tolerance for Change , I scored 22 and 36 for self efficacy and tolerance for risk, respectively. From
the interpretation, both scores lie on the middle grounds. This means that I am moderately

SOM Teacher Observation
After completing the SOLOM teacher observation assignment I received great information about
where my student stands and what areas he has room for improvements so that I can better his
learning. My student has great comprehension skills. This is definitely his strongest skill out of the

understand what the teacher was saying and had no trouble on neither his quiz or test. If he was able to

He only missed 4 out of 10 questions on his vocabulary test. I would rate his vocabulary skills at a 3.
The only reason why I gave my student a 3 and not a 4 is because he still struggled to understand
some of the vocabularies that was on the quiz and struggled using the right words in his conversations.
His pronunciation is definitely one of the biggest areas for improvements. I would rate my student at a
2 under pronunciation because at times it is very hard to understand him. There are certain sounds that
he picks up right away and knows how to use it in a sentence. He is still able to say what is on his
mind and you are still able to understand what he is saying; it is just difficult at times to understand

Grammar is another area where my student did well at. After looking over his journal writing for the

As we saw in the documentary The Fourth Part of the Brain, some of the kids who starred in
Dizdarevic s film An Awkward Age were Bosnian Muslims, others Bosnian Croats, others Bosnian
Serbs. In spite of different ethnicities, they still liked and cared about one another during the war. After
the premiere of the movie, Esvedin, Sabina, and Sedin were interviewed in an apartment in Sarajevo.
Sedin sent special regards to his good friends Srdjan, who was in Zvornik. They both grow up in the
same part of Sarajevo, where they used to hang out together, and Sedin hoped to hang out with Srdjan
again. Srdjan replied that he was moved that Sedin still wanted to be with him again, but he was afraid
that he could not go back. He believed that everybody would hate him if he went back to Sarajevo
because his uncle and possibly other relatives had been involved in killing Muslims. The reason why
Srdjan was so moved might be that Sedin understood that it was not Srdjan but the soldiers that should
be to blame. Sedin could make distinctions between the soldiers who were terrorizing the Muslim
population and other Serbs who were blameless like his friends. Srdjan and Sedin, in spite of their
different religions and ethnicities, used to be good friends before they were both picked for the movie.

Erikson s Phychosocial Development In The Lion King
As a child, I can remember watching the Lion King movie several times because my family loved this
timeless movie. I always just thought of it as a story about the circle of life that we all hear so much
about in church and from our parents. However, for this assignment I chose to watch this movie once
more; giving particular attention to details and thoroughly examining Simba s life stage development
in relation to Erik Erikson s psychosocial stages and Jean Piaget s cognitive development stages.
Needless to say, I was able to find significant evidence relating to these developmental theorists. The
story not only displays the hardships of maturation, and the perplexities associated with growing, but
it also deals with the search for one s own identity and responsibility. To exemplify Erickson s
psychosocial theory which emphasizes the emergence of the self, the search for identity, the individual
s relationships with others, and the role of culture throughout life (page), I will begin with the opening
of the movie which shows Simba at the infancy stage where he is developing a trusting behavior from
his parents (Mufasa and Sarabi) and the Hornbill bird, Zazu, who is always reminding everyone to be
cautious and careful. His parents accomplished this by providing him a safe and comfortable living
environment and Sarabi made sure there was someone wiser (Zazu) to go with him when he wanted to
start exploring. Mufasa taught him how to make a living and other new activities,

Essay on The Easter Uprising of 1916
The Easter Uprising of 1916
The Easter Uprising of 1916 was an event that happened at the tail end of a long list of events that
would forever change Ireland. The Uprising or Rising, as some call it, took place mostly in Dublin but
was felt throughout Ireland. The point was to gain independence from Great Britain who had ruled
Ireland for the past couple hundred years. At the turn of the 19th century England believed that Ireland
had too much independence and made the Act of Union. The result was the Act of Union of 1801: the
Irish parliament voted itself out of existence and England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales were formally
politically unified for the first time (Hegarty 2). Around the time of the First World War, Ireland began

The Irish were promised the Home Rule Act, but it was taken away at the start of the Ester Uprising.
This modest promise was swept away the Easter Uprising of 1916, when a small band of rebels
paralyzed the city and the Irish Republic was proclaimed from the steps of the GPO (Hegarty).
Padhraic Pearse led about 2000 people into the Easter Revolution, only a small fraction of the people
that had lived in Dublin at the time. Most of the Irish were involved in World War I. They had little
support many Irish volunteers had joined the war effort and the rebels were perceived to be traitors to
the great cause (Hegarty). It would take more violence and rebellion against the British to bring
attention to their cause both locally and abroad.
The Easter Rising led to the arrests of approximately 3500 people. Although more than half were
released after they were questioned; many received unfair trials or no trial at all. When the news broke
to the Irish public about the treatment of the rebels, they also found out that there were 15 fifteen
secret executions, of the leaders of the Uprising. The tables began to turn away from the War to the aid
of the rebels as the truth came out. The seven signatories of the proclamation of independence (
Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, MacDonagh, MacDermott, Plunkett, and Ceannt) were all executed to the
outrage of the Irish

My Statement Of Purpose For Industrial And Systems...
Einstein aptly said, Knowledge is like an ocean and I m just a young lad picking shells on its shore.
On a scale of such magnitude, I m probably one who is still trailing rivers on their journey to the
deltas, but I certainly have the zeal to make it to the abyss of that ocean, facing the toughest of the
waves. It is my passion for nurturing my knowledge in the field I know best and where I believe I can
leave a lasting contribution to society, which has brought me to your doorstep.

My undergraduate course curriculum and my involvement in several projects outside the coursework
has given me ample opportunities to gain experience in various fields of Industrial and Systems
Engineering. This has also assisted me in narrowing down my academic interests to specific areas. My
interest in Industrial Engineering is particularly because of its striking relevance to real world
problems; supported by my competence to model, formulate, and solve such problems. However, with
the maturity of the organizations in terms of information infrastructure, the speed of access to that
information and the plethora of types of that information have led to a natural evolution in decision
making from an Industrial Engineering perspective to an Information Engineering perspective. ...

Earthquake s Impact on the People of Haiti
On January 12th, 2010, the small Caribbean nation of Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.
This was the worst earthquake to hit the region in over two centuries (BBC News). More than fifty
aftershocks measuring over 4.5 followed within the next two weeks. The earthquakes left Haiti in
shambles and exacerbated their conditions. There were 3.5 million people affected and over 220
thousand killed (Disasters Emergency Committee). Major damage was caused at the Haitian capital,
Port au Prince. The country was manifestly unprepared for this event and Haiti was propelled into a
downward spiral. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a devastating event which furthered the country s
social, economic, and political instability.

However, by purchasing imported food instead of locally grown food, the prosperity of local farmers
becomes undermined. This highlights Haiti s lack of self sufficiency as a country. Haiti has become
extremely reliant on other countries for it to barely scrape by. In response to the horrific earthquake,
the world rallied together and pledged over $4.5 billion in aid to help alleviate Haiti s troubles. Of the
pledged aid, $2.3 billion has already been disbursed (Washington Post). Yet, years after the incident,
the country is still struggling to recover. The money is crucial for restoration, but it does not create
opportunities for the people. The unemployment rate before the earthquake was at a staggering 70
percent (Global Post). Instead of empowering locals, projects have been created to provide instant,
quantifiable results. As the country becomes more reliant on foreign aid, their development as a nation
is hindered. This, in turn, continues the vicious cycle of unsustainability. To quote a Chinese proverb,

Lean And Six Sigma Origins Of Statistical Tools Essay
Lean and Six Sigma, both are different words or we can say two powerful methodology which
changed the view of the manufacturer to the customer. Lean Six Sigma pleased customer with
manufacturers over the years by its implementation of various industries. Today, almost all industries
have adapted Lean Six Sigma methodology to make standard quality products. I personally feel proud

The Tibetans and the Navajo Native Americans are from different cultures. The Tibetan s have lived
intertwined with China for centuries. They tried to free themselves from China rules yet they failed.
The 14th Dalai Lama fled China and found exile in India. China to this day has total control over
Tibetan people. Using all the tools of repression to deter and punish Tibetan resistance as stated on
Free Tibet. The people of Tibet are dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The monks and nuns play a vital part
in the community, furthermore they are viewed as teachers and mentors. The Chinese did not want the
Dalai Lama to have the followers that he had. If a person how any paraphernalia of the Dalai Lama
could lead to their incarceration and or torture. The Chinese monitors and controls the religious
aspects in Tibet. Consequently, the Chinese government found the devotion of the Tibetans to the
Dalai Lama as a danger to their political goals. By way of contrast with the conflict with the Chinese
government, the monks live a simple life. The Tibetan monks believes in the liberation of all being,
personal enlightenment, compassion and nature around us.

The Distinction of Social Classes in Sister Carrie by...
By the later part of the 1800 s New York and Chicago were some of the largest cities in the world and
both had populations that exceeded a million. With the growing population, the economy s stability
began to fluctuate. The instability within the states gave rise to two distinct populations within
America, the upper and the working classes. Theodore Dreiser, knowing the volatile state America
was built upon, highlighted the economic differences between the wealthy and the poor in his novel
Sister Carrie.
During the eighteenth century, America had transformed from a simple homestead into an ornate
country. Within the bustling empire, the wealthy were able to live lavish lifestyle that inspired the idea

were often too large of an expense. Even with Governmental/ Charity handouts the citizens had no

cold and sterile, and they were not guaranteed a place to stay every night. On the others side of the
unbalanced American social scale, the rich were living in superb houses and apartments that bespoke

To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell
Andrew Marvell s poem, To His Coy Mistress is an equally beautiful and provocative piece of writing.
Written in iambic form as a three part proposition addressed to the coy mistress, the poem is
permeated with literary devices such as tone, alliteration, imagery, hyperbole, as well as similes and
metaphors. Marvell s speaker acknowledges the idea that mortality is of little to no value after death.
Through the speaker, Marvell is suggesting that one can avoid the regrets of not participating in the
adventurous aspects of life by seizing the day, thus supporting the Carpe Diem philosophy. The three
part proposition can be identified through the change of the poem s tone as well as the change of pace.
The first argument has a sly and devious tone. Had we but world enough, and time, This coyness, lady,
were no crime. (lines 1 2). The use of the punctuations, the commas and the period, hinders the pace
of the poem. In doing so, it shows the insignificance of time at that moment. The insignificance of
time at the moment is further emphasized when the speaker tells his mistress that they would sit down,
and think which way, To walk, and pass [their] long love s day (lines 3 4). The use of alliteration
creates a carefree tone, as if the speaker was daydreaming and sighing as he was trying to woo his
mistress. Marvell uses delicate and sublime imagery to flatter the mistress with a seemingly
disingenuous exaggeration of her physical beauty. Because of the unrealistic use

Eminent Domain Case Analysis
This seems to be the fundamental issue underlying the paper: a pernicious sense of what is valuable.
Multiple times, the paper asserts that the be all, end all metric of value ought to be economic value,
specifically the value derived from synergistic arrangements of real property. But viewing a situation
through this lens dehumanizes the situation. It leads to situations where we can, with a straight face,
describe human settlement as clutter to be disposed of. Indeed, alternative metrics of value exist which
add nuance to the situation. Sentimental or cultural value, for example, may be entirely at odds with
economic value. Were a city to grow and encompass sacred Native American land, would it not be fair
to consider such interests alongside those of the capital class? What about a family with ancestors ...

One of the crucial assumptions underlying the paper s analysis is that a redevelopment effort will
necessarily create positive economic value. But what if it does not? Kelo serves as a perfect example.
What was supposed to be a profitable facility is currently an empty lot collecting storm debris. At least
with eminent domain, voters have some form of cathartic recourse. They can vote out the individuals
who made the decision to condemn their homes for an ultimately disastrous product. In a callable fee
or floating fee situation, voters have little ability to seek redress, instead nurturing feelings of political
disenfranchisement and anti establishment resentment. Further, the threat of losing their seats
incentivizes politicians to carefully examine any proposed development and only exercise their power
when reasonably sure of its success, minimizing potential mishaps. Thus, voters are both empowered
and incentives are put in place to encourage careful decision making concerning development

Fredrick s Use Of Falconers In Medieval Times
In Europe, the ancient art of falconry is patently linked to Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. The
exploration of falconry and hunting with hawks in the Middle Ages is based off Frederick s studies,
mainly his book called De Arte Venandi Cum Avibus and his court at Palermo, Sicily. He affected and
inspired falconers in medieval and modern society. He encountered Matthew of Paris and a few other
famous rulers at his court in Palermo. Matthew of Paris proclaimed Frederick as Stupor Mundi, Latin
for wonder of the world. He exchanged ideas with his scholars and expanded the practice of hawking
throughout medieval Europe.

Ban Zhao s Lessons For A Woman
Though authored possibly centuries apart, the Confucian Analects and court historian Ban Zhao s
Lessons for a Woman have far more similarities than they do differences. The reason for this
complementarity is that Ban Zhao s writings are intentionally constructed to mirror the teachings of
the Analects with a focus on the roles of women in society rather than those of men. She very
specifically focuses on relationships between men and women, thus between the two texts a well
rounded picture of the proper marriage relationship in ancient Chinese culture can be formed. The

2. Once it is established that the first step of the goodwill impairment test must be completed, the
following steps must be taken according to FASB codification section 350 20 35.4. The first step of
the goodwill impairment test is to, compare the fair value of a reporting unit with its carrying amount,

Huckleberry Finn Dehumanization
In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, author Mark Twin explores the dehumanization of African
American slaves in American history. The novel follows Huckleberry Finn and his unlikely

While the novel focuses on racism in American society at the height of slavery, it is as controversial in
today s society as it was in Mark Twain s time. When Twain wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1884, slavery
had been abolished but racism was still evident in the mistreatment of African American people. Huck

quote, Huck is pretending to be a girl and has already given the name Sarah Williams. But he forgets
and the woman questioning him says Honey, I thought you said it was Sarah when you first come in?
to which Huck replies with a quick lie. Oh, yes m, I did. Sarah Mary Williams. Sarah s my first name.
Some calls me Sarah, some calls me Mary (52). After being caught in a lie, Huck proceeds to tell
another one. Of course teenagers nowadays still try to use this lying strategy. But like Huck, they are
often caught in the lie and end up having to tell the truth. It seems to be a second nature for most
teenagers to lie when they feel like they are at fault. And for someone like Huck, who is usually at
fault, getting one s way through deceit appears to be the easiest plan. This trait of Huck s is something
students can personally relate to and laugh

How Does Shakespeare Present Relationship Between Men and...
How does Shakespeare present relationship between Men and Women and how might a modern day
audience respond?
During the time of Shakespeare women lived in a male dominated society. Women In this period had
virtually no legal power and lost all right to own all personal property when they married. Men were
expected to be the heads of the households. Once a boy turned eight he no longer was required to obey
his mother. The ideal woman was believed to be a virgin and a faithful wife. Female honour and social
respectability were tied so closely to sexuality that death was often presented as preferable to the loss
of female chastity. The relationships between Men and Women In this play do reflect the status
between them at the time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hermione is reasonable and rational; she is proud of her self and confident that she has done no
wrong. She trusts in her husband to find the truth, where as Leontes completely irrational jealously
shows he has no trust. This reflect the imbalanced relationship they have although a modern audience
would want Hermione to fight for her rights against this hysterical man, we admire her for her dignity.
Although Hermione accepts the charges the lords of the courts show that Hermione is true and loyal
and they want the good truth to be known . In contrast to the relationship of Hermione and Leontes
rests the relationship of Paulina and Antigonus. Unlike Hermione, Paulina is a strong minded and
dominant woman and does not let her husband rule her like Hermione does He shall not rule me .
Paulina and Antigonus seem to contradict the conventional rules of marriage because at the time of the
play it was very unusual for a woman to be in control of the marriage. Although in today s modern
society these would be seen as a common normal thing. Therefore a Modern audience would relate
more with Paulina and Antigonus and would feel more comfortable watching them. However Leontes
expects Antigonus to rule Paulina and control her which reflect the expectations of a Jacobean
marriage. A modern audience would be shocked by how forceful Leontes is. Force her hence . The
contrast in the two marriages reflects the contrast between the two men and the two women, and

Computer Vs. Personal Computers
Smart phones and computer have been around for quite a while, but the only difference is that the
personal computers have been around way longer than smart phones. Before computers were a big
deal, but now it s all about smart phones and new ones that are launching soon. People may not think
so much about personal computers because today s generation is all about smart phones now. I
understand that people can have their own personal opinion and may disagree with what I m saying,
but my opinion is that personal computers are better. Personal computers is a better, electronic than
smart phones because personal computers are not a distraction, and are a lot more helpful. First,
personal computers are less distracting. Computer actually need access to Wi Fi in order to do
anything. I believe computer are better because if you have no Wi Fi then you can t access your social
media and wouldn t be distracted. You also won t be distracting while driving because you won t have
Wi Fi and it is actually safer because you can pay more attention to driving than being on social
media. Computers also don t receive text messages nor phone calls, which is a good thing. This
electronic is also good for when doing homework because you can listen to music, type better, and
faster on the keyboard. In contrary, smartphones are very distracting. Smartphones can be helpful
when you can t access Wi Fi for google maps or just looking up a store for hours, email and other
notifications. Smart phones

Susan B Anthony Women s Rights Movement
For decades, the fight for women s rights has been a constant struggle in a male dominated American
society. During the early 1800s, women s traditional roles included providing for the household, such
as educating and raising their children. At this time, women were not given the right to own property
or vote, and they had very minimal economic independence. However, throughout the Gilded Age and
the Progressive Era, a time of business expansion and social reforms, the women s civil rights
movement had escalated due to the actions of many influential figures and reform groups. One of the
most substantial women of the time was Susan B.Anthony, who led the National Woman Suffrage
Association (often abbreviated as NWSA). The equal rights movement ... Show more content on

Despite the social adversities, the law worked in favor of women during multiple important court
cases such as Roe v. Wade, which sought to ensure a woman s right to abortion. However, during the
rise of conservatism in the late 1900s, opposers such as Phyllis Schlafly attempted to halt the
movement with her STOP ERA campaign. Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative activist, was credited with
almost single handedly stopping the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (Sullivan, Patricia.

The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed by the National Women s Political Party in 1923 and was
intended to ensure equality of men and women and prohibit discrimination. Furthermore, the backlash
against feminism was prevalent through Susan Faludi s book, The Undeclared War Against American
Women, in 1991 that detailed the defeat of the Equal Rights Amendment; the rise of the antiabortion

The Lack Of Ppi Claim Deadline Hurt Lloyds Shares
5 Will the lack of PPI claim deadline hurt Lloyds shares?
The PPI (Payment Protection Insurance) scandal has gripped the United Kingdom, as millions were
seemingly undone by this somewhat fraudulent contractual term. PPI is also known as credit
insurance, loan repayment insurance, or credit protection insurance and relates to the insuring of a
loan repayment should a borrower become ill, unemployed, or pass away. Sadly, while it sounded like
a fair enough concept on paper, it was far from it on reality. Banks such as Lloyds were mis selling
PPI, with some even having no idea that they had PPI until they faced charges later on. The issue
related to PPI would take years to come fruition, but when it did Lloyds shares would pay a heavy ...

This presents a serious issue for Lloyds and Lloyd shares, especially considering that in other
departments the bank is seen as a notably strong performer.
Addressing the matter head on, Lloyds is leading the charge when it comes to capping the time in
which a PPI claim is made. The original plan was for a deadline of 2018 to be implemented, but
Lloyds want it brought forward in attempt to boost Lloyds shares prospects. Speaking on the matter
Lloyds Finance Chief George Culmer said, We think that by implementing a shorter time bar, it will
force people s hand. It will make those people who have a potentially outstanding claim to act more
quickly . Pushing the matter forward, he has also declared the original cut off date of 2018 to be
unnecessary and excessive .
The facts are clear; people are apprehensive when it comes to Lloyds shares because the matter of PPI
has still yet to be settled. The results announcement failed to deceive in the sense that PPI is being
shown to be a huge burden on Lloyds, and in many ways is a black cloud that is hanging over the
bank. Since the turn of the 2008 credit crisis, Lloyds is one of the few banks that has been truly able to
steady ship. The problem is that due to PPI concerns that isn t necessarily showing within the price of
Lloyds shares.

Causes Of The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill
The 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill was the largest ship based oil spill in US waters where more than 11
million gallons of crude oil poured into the Gulf of Alaska after the ship ran aground on Bligh Reef in
Prince William Sound, Alaska. The main causes of the accident were attributed to a fatigued crew, a
lack of a proper navigation team while transiting through the Sound, and an inadequate ship design.
The oil spill led to federal legislation for ship hull requirements, oil spill prevention and response
improvements, and new escorting requirements through the Sound. On 22 March 1989, the Exxon
Valdez arrived in Valdez, Alaska at 2330 to begin loading cargo bound for Long Beach, CA (Alaska
Oil 1990, 5). Capt. Joseph Hazelwood and other officers drove into town the following morning with
William Murphy, the pilot who would be leading the ship through the Valdez Narrows. According to
the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB 1989,29), Hazelwood in addition to finishing ship
business and running errands had a few alcoholic drinks that afternoon at a local bar and at least one
more drink as the group waited for dinner. At 2024 on 23 March, the officers returned to the ship at
2024 and found out that the ship was ready to depart at 2100. The ship was originally scheduled to
depart at 2200. Before the officers returned, Third Mate Gregory Cousins had performed pre departure
equipment tests and found that the tests were successful. The ship set sail and was clear of the dock

side of this course. From there, the beginning of module 2, we dive into harder skills. So module 2
focuses around your immediate priorities in a survival situation. Following that is module 3, short
term survival skills. Then, schedule wise, we ll be heading out on to the overnight after that and

Executive Of Corporate Sustainability Consulting Group Essay
In response to the request of the Director of Corporate Sustainability Consulting Group, this memo
provides analysis and recommendations regarding Unilever s transition to sustainably sourced tea.
With dominant shares in the tea market, the transition to sustainably sourced tea will have first mover
advantage. By adopting the Rainforest Alliance certification, Lipton Tea can expect to certify all farms
and plantations. To counteract low market response, contingency plans need to be developed including
price adjustments and targeted marketing. This transition is also an opportunity to implement
sustainability internally at Unilever and expand across other products.
Tea is the most consumed beverage after water in the world (Groosman, 2011, p. 1). Due to its
climatic requirements, the tea crop is produced only in tropical or sub tropical areas except for a few
varieties that can be produced in other regions (FAOUN, 2015, p.2). The main production areas
include Southeast Asia and Southeast Africa (FAOUN, 2015, p.4).
The global tea supply chain includes three parts: production, trading, and blending and packaging.
While Unilever is involved in all three parts, key companies in production include McLeod Russel and
Tata Tea (Groosman, 2011, p. 2). Approximately 60% of tea is consumed locally within production
areas and in developing countries as shown in Figure 3 (Groosman, 2011, p. 2). One key distinction
from other popular beverages is high consumption in developing

  • 2. The Policies of Lenin and Stalin Essay Identified within this study is the argument that whilst many of Lenin s theories and practices were continued under Stalin, many were in fact developed and extended to new levels, possibly reflecting different motives: what Pipes refers to as Stalin s personality of excesses . Although for many years, numerous historians including both members of the Western school of thought (such as Pipes), along with the official Soviet historians of the time believed that Stalin was the natural heir of Lenin, opinions have changed with time. As more evidence came out of Stalin s mass atrocities, the Soviet historians soon began to see Stalin as the betrayer of the revolution as Trotsky had always maintained, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to this view, had Lenin lived, these policies would probably have been reversed as political and economic stability was restored, and certainly would not have given rise to the mass extermination of millions of peasants and party members, which prevailed under Stalin in the 1930s. In scrutinising the actions of Stalin, I have examined especially how they differed from those of Lenin, and in what ways the motives for similar actions changed. One aspect of continuity is reflected in the control and influence that both Lenin and Stalin had over their parties. In 1921, Lenin effectively destroyed democracy in the party through his ban of factionalism. Although this was used to end the problem of splits (during the crisis of the same year), many see it as a key factor in allowing Stalin to rise to power. Stalin often accused people of factionalism (e.g. Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev) as a response to any challenges to his authority. It also created a situation that allowed the party leadership to do what it wanted and dismiss any opposition. Pipes argues that as a result of this, the Bolsheviks were carefully coerced into always following Lenin s will, and that his policy of democratic centralism was merely a façade like many of the other ... • 3. Examples Of Overcoming Fear The Prison Within Overcoming fear Overcoming fear introduction There is a prison that has an inmate population in the billions. It s a prison without walls, without barbed wire, without guards and without any physical barrier. But it is the most effective prison in the whole world. Few escape it, but those who do find real and lasting freedom. That prison is in our minds. • 4. Living and Coping with Cystic Fibrosis in the South Asian... A widely accepted Caucasian disease has since changed; as cases of its existence are appearing in the South Asian Population (Orenstein, Rosenstein and Stern, 2000). First discovered in 1989, Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetically predetermined condition, its presences is lifelong and highly complex, which is why many CF sufferers and families develop various mechanisms in order to adapt to the condition (Tippingemail, Scholes, Cox, 2010). Cystic Fibrosis causes the body to develop thick, sticky mucus which clogs the lungs and affects other organs in the body, mainly the pancreas. The layer of mucus if untreated develops in to a chronic infection which can be detrimental. The pancreas of a CF patient is most vulnerable, once the mucus has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Discussions of such issues suggest that other external factors may be influencing the decisions and maintenance of many CF patients. For instance CF patients need to prioritise the way in which they self manage their treatment, this can be difficult when trying to balance family, work, education and other responsibilities and their levels of adherence may fluctuate (Sawicki, Sellers, Robinson, 2009). These fluctuations can be detrimental to their condition and may result in hospitalisation, causing additional disruptions in their daily life. However, engaging in so called normal activities might therefore also reinforce a sense of being healthy and having a nondifferent identity. Conquering a healthy balance is one which CF patients may need to adopt. One of the significant points from McCormick et al, (2005) research underlined the substantial clinical differences for females in comparison to males. The authors found that females had worst disease severity than males. Why might this difference be occurring? In 2009 Besier, Schmitz and Goldbeck, investigated the effects of relationship status on life satisfaction, as numerous findings suggest that despite the relationship status, many females CF patients still reported worse quality of life scores than males (Walters, Britton, Hodson, 1993). Besier et al, (2009) administrated the Life satisfaction questionnaire on a sample of 243 CF (129 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Radar Intrusion Detection System ( Ids )  INTRUSION DETECTION SYSTEM (IDS): The IDS is a type of security management system for computers and networks. It gathers and analyzes the information from different areas within the computer or a network in order to identify possible security threats, which may include both intrusions and misuse[[98] , [99]]. It is installed between the firewall and personal computer or server as shown in figure 7. The moment the IDS detects the attacks, an alarm is produced that informs the user of the undergoing attacks. It has three core parts packet sniffing, detection and reporting. Figure 7: Intrusion Detection System According to the method of detection , IDS can be divided into: Anomaly and Misuse based detection. After the construction of the normal pattern the data is classified into attacked data if it doesn t belong to normal data. Misused detection is used to detect the attacks in different ways. Anomaly based detection often has high false alarm rate due to the changeful attack patterns. Its accuracy rate is low as compared to the Misuse based detection .The accuracy rate of misuse based detection is high because the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Theories And Models Of Behavior And Behavior Change Mirror published a story about a father and husband who totally spied members of his family. [1] He installed an application on their mobile devices which allowed him to control their location, to read their emails, text messages. This application allows him even to listen to their conversations and to see who they are with via camera. While this story makes an impression as being fabricated, it could serve as a basis to deliberate about aspects of human nature. Though the husband s misdeed is at least controversial from legal and ethical point of view, nevertheless the causative effects of his behaviour is a matter of concern in this paper. I will talk about the human behaviour first, about how it is perceived from a scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can find out, that he is a web developer and a technology geek. We can also find that his wife knew about the application and that she witnessed couple of times when the application was used. We cannot specify neither genetic factors or core faith. We can assume that the story is about typical British family and in this way, we can assume the British culture and social norms are the background of the story. We know very little about real husband s attitude. He confessed that safety was his concern. But we don t know whether he is honest and whether this is the whole truth. Therefore, I think that it doesn t make sense to try and analyse the story in depth, because the story is rather shallow. However, basing on the story we can explore some what if scenarios, like what if the wife didn t know about the application, what if the husband lied and his intentions was not so harmless as he explained. The interesting part of the story is that it touches the problem which appeared quite recently. If we take into account permanent character of husband s espionage, and if we make an assumption that it was done without explicit consent of his wife and his children, then this story illustrates a problem which has become quite prevalent lately a stalking. I m going to explore this problem in more detail and I will try to find its relevance to the story mentioned above. I will also try to identify causative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Negative Effects Of Violence In Television And Mass... With 59 dead and 527 injured, the Las Vegas shooting earlier this month was one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history. With no immediately apparent motive, it begs the question in people as to what might possess a person to go out and commit such a heinous crime. Indeed, the question has dogged the American populace ever since the invention of the modern mass shooting, and even before, attached to other senseless violent atrocities. Human brains are wired to look for causality in meaningless events as a survival mechanism, so they have a tendency to find it in places where it actually never existed in the first place. This is why violence in television and video games has come under fire in recent years as their influence expands, despite evidence that such phony violence does not beget real violence and may, in fact, be beneficial to a person s well being. Firstly, it should be noted that the studies people often cite when attempting to prove media violence has negative effects on behavior are flawed and inconsistent. In a review of publications on the subject conducted by psychologist Jonathan L. Freedman, he found that of the 2,500 publications, there were only 200 pieces of non duplicated research among them, stemming from places of varying scientific legitimacy. The ways in which many of these studies are conducted can lead to skewed results in favor of the hypothesis the researchers want to prove. When studying how violent media consumption affects play ... Empirical results of the most widely known theories in the field of business ethics contain numerous inconsistencies and contradictions. In an attempt to assess why we continue to lack understanding of how individuals make ethical decisions at work, an inductive study of ethical decision making was conducted. The results of this preliminary study suggest that ethical decision making might not be meaningfully special or different from other decision making processes. The implications of this research are potentially significant in that they challenge the fundamental assumption of existing ethical decision making research. This research could serve as an impetus for further examination of whether ethical decision making is meaningfully different from other decision making processes. Of Mice And Men Freudian Analysis Essay Freudian Analysis: Of Mice and Men Introduction In John Steinbeck s book of Mouse and Men a story that was based on the relationships between people, Steinbeck tackles issues of race relations the dynamics and stereotypes of men and women, but unlike other authors of his time included a character facing a form of mental illness. Throughout the book we see Lennie Small a seemingly innocent giant reliance on a quick talking dreamer who goes by the name of George Smith. American society was never truly ready to face mental illness, and Steinbeck wanted to open the dialogue. With this rejection of the mentally ill as normal beings in society psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud had his own views on the capacity and formation of mental illnesses. Views ... With a few treatments for mental diseases, the most common treatment was hot and cold continuous baths, lobotomies that that were introduced in the 1930s and usually resulted in permant brain damage. On the Ranch Lennie is seen as the huge hulk of a man that could lift anything staying strong with the belief that the mental ill is only good for their physical prowess. Every few times have we heard Lennie speak about his feelings and stand up for himself, George was his mouth peace disguising Lennie s developmental (lack of speech) delay as being from an accident he got kicked in the head by a horse when he was a kid this is similar to saying he was dropped when he was a baby. • 11. Button Button Analysis In, Button, Button, the author, Richard Matheson introduces Norma and Arthur Lewis. The button causes temptations that lead to conflicts between the two characters. In the narrative, Mr. Steward arrives at the house and tells them about the button. If one of them pushes the button, someone will die, and they will receive a grand total of $50,000. This causes a dramatic conflict between the two. It brings the worst out of the two of them, causing jealousy, selfishness, and acquisitiveness. Norma has to make a decision whether to press the button or not. She contemplates and then eventually to press the button. Matheson uses dialogue, inner thinking, description, and symbolism to develop the central conflicts in the story and to accentuate how relationships break off even in the best circumstances. Richard Matheson uses dialogue to develop conflict in the story. The use of dialogue is utilized to represent situational irony. In Button, Button the text states: You said I wouldn t know the one that died. My dear lady... Do you really think you knew your husband? (Matheson 111). Additionally, this conversation indicates the situational irony revealed by between the two characters: Norma and Mr. Steward. Mrs. Lewis didn t believe her husband would be the one that dies. She didn t realize that she was so self absorbed and never truly knew her husband. This conversation between two characters leaves the readers on a cliffhanger. • 12. A Long Way Gone Freedom Analysis Since the beginning of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the protagonist of the novel Ishmael endeavors to flee from the hardships enkindled by the RUF rebel organization that has amalgamated the country of Sierra Leone, officially making it a war zone. Moreover, for more than two years Ishmael has attempted to escape from the rebels, moving from village to village, rummaging through abandoned homes. Seemingly, the rebels would make their way to Ishmael, sweeping all villages. Deprived of food or any sign of hope surviving as a lone wolf , Ishmael enlisted in the Army of Sierra Leone to fight against the radical organization. Ishmael risked his life for the prime purpose of surviving and to pursue freedom. Furthermore, self determination was one of the reasons for such bravery, but it was also due to specific objects that aided in Ishmael s journey for freedom. Nonetheless, in his literary work, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses symbols to underscore his central theme of oppression and/or freedom. The most evident symbols that accentuate the theme of oppression and/or freedom are the moon, the rap cassette tape, and the AK 47. The moon s role in Ishmael s journey is very prominent, as it exhibits the theme of freedom also oppression in the novel. When Ishmael is in dire need of comfort he looks to the moon for help when struggling to survive the civil war alone. For instance, hypnosis reminds me of watching a hypnotist at the county fair. I think of how he claimed to randomly select ten volunteers from the audience, and sat them in a straight line of folding chairs facing the audience. Throughout his half hour performance he hypnotized his volunteers and commanded them to perform odd tasks and act like various barnyard animals. The audience roared with laugher as one man performed the chicken dance with intense gusto. As on the other side of the stage, a woman ran around smelling the armpits of the other volunteers. On the other hand, a starkly different image comes to mind when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this in mind I went searching for a video or audio recording to aid me and guide me through the exercise. I was successful and found a video on YouTube titled, Relaxation Hypnotherapy Hypnosis for Stress Management by Chloe Brotheridge, posted on her channel Easy Ways to Change. In the video, which was primarily an audio recording, a woman s voice speaks to you and guides you through a hypnosis session to reduce stress. In the beginning she tells you to lie down and close your eyes and to begin focusing on deep breathing. From there she guides you through relaxing and releasing all of your muscles, starting in your toes and going all the way up to your scalp. At this point I felt very relaxed, as well as heavy and light at the same time. She then tells you ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The three articles this time around looked at the whole year and outlined different important events and ideas that came about during this time. I wanted to touch on the Tet offensive, the different social movements of the time and the role of the media. All of these aspects came together to form the perfect storm of 1968. The Tet offensive is touched in both The Doves Ascendant: The American Antiwar Movement in 1968 and 1968: The End and the Beginning in the United States and Western Europe . • 17. Interpretation of Survey Results INTERPRETATION OF SURVEY RESULTS As part of the requirements in order to complete this paper, I took three surveys to determine my stand on change itself. I ve known that change is the only constant thing in life. People change, situations change, and even nature changes. We have to be prepared for the changes to come around us or we will not be able to make it. In fact, science itself tells us that those who can adapt most to change will those who survive. In the survey entitled Are You Tolerant of Change? , I was able to score 66. This score falls on the moderate level of tolerance for change. But, looking at the number, it s pretty closer to lower tolerance compared to high level of tolerance. The questions in these survey mostly pertained to my reaction in work changes. I might say that the result is quite spot on. Although I am quite moderately tolerant to change, I feel quite uncertain, especially with work changes because I know for a fact that not all the time, things end up positively for us employees. With all the economic uncertainties today, you quite never know when you re going to be laid off and that s quite scary. Still, the results show that I can at least tolerate change and I hope that s enough to get me through. For the survey entitled An Assessment of Low Tolerance for Change , I scored 22 and 36 for self efficacy and tolerance for risk, respectively. From the interpretation, both scores lie on the middle grounds. This means that I am moderately ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I always just thought of it as a story about the circle of life that we all hear so much about in church and from our parents. However, for this assignment I chose to watch this movie once more; giving particular attention to details and thoroughly examining Simba s life stage development in relation to Erik Erikson s psychosocial stages and Jean Piaget s cognitive development stages. Needless to say, I was able to find significant evidence relating to these developmental theorists. The story not only displays the hardships of maturation, and the perplexities associated with growing, but it also deals with the search for one s own identity and responsibility. To exemplify Erickson s psychosocial theory which emphasizes the emergence of the self, the search for identity, the individual s relationships with others, and the role of culture throughout life (page), I will begin with the opening of the movie which shows Simba at the infancy stage where he is developing a trusting behavior from his parents (Mufasa and Sarabi) and the Hornbill bird, Zazu, who is always reminding everyone to be cautious and careful. His parents accomplished this by providing him a safe and comfortable living environment and Sarabi made sure there was someone wiser (Zazu) to go with him when he wanted to start exploring. Essay on The Easter Uprising of 1916 The Easter Uprising of 1916 The Easter Uprising of 1916 was an event that happened at the tail end of a long list of events that would forever change Ireland. The Uprising or Rising, as some call it, took place mostly in Dublin but was felt throughout Ireland. The point was to gain independence from Great Britain who had ruled Ireland for the past couple hundred years. At the turn of the 19th century England believed that Ireland had too much independence and made the Act of Union. The result was the Act of Union of 1801: the Irish parliament voted itself out of existence and England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales were formally politically unified for the first time (Hegarty 2). This modest promise was swept away the Easter Uprising of 1916, when a small band of rebels paralyzed the city and the Irish Republic was proclaimed from the steps of the GPO (Hegarty). Padhraic Pearse led about 2000 people into the Easter Revolution, only a small fraction of the people that had lived in Dublin at the time. Most of the Irish were involved in World War I. They had little support many Irish volunteers had joined the war effort and the rebels were perceived to be traitors to the great cause (Hegarty). It would take more violence and rebellion against the British to bring attention to their cause both locally and abroad. The Easter Rising led to the arrests of approximately 3500 people. Although more than half were released after they were questioned; many received unfair trials or no trial at all. When the news broke to the Irish public about the treatment of the rebels, they also found out that there were 15 fifteen secret executions, of the leaders of the Uprising. The tables began to turn away from the War to the aid of the rebels as the truth came out. • 31. To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell Andrew Marvell s poem, To His Coy Mistress is an equally beautiful and provocative piece of writing. Written in iambic form as a three part proposition addressed to the coy mistress, the poem is permeated with literary devices such as tone, alliteration, imagery, hyperbole, as well as similes and metaphors. Marvell s speaker acknowledges the idea that mortality is of little to no value after death. Through the speaker, Marvell is suggesting that one can avoid the regrets of not participating in the adventurous aspects of life by seizing the day, thus supporting the Carpe Diem philosophy. The three part proposition can be identified through the change of the poem s tone as well as the change of pace. The first argument has a sly and devious tone. Had we but world enough, and time, This coyness, lady, were no crime. (lines 1 2). The use of the punctuations, the commas and the period, hinders the pace of the poem. In doing so, it shows the insignificance of time at that moment. The insignificance of time at the moment is further emphasized when the speaker tells his mistress that they would sit down, and think which way, To walk, and pass [their] long love s day (lines 3 4). Multiple times, the paper asserts that the be all, end all metric of value ought to be economic value, specifically the value derived from synergistic arrangements of real property. But viewing a situation through this lens dehumanizes the situation. It leads to situations where we can, with a straight face, describe human settlement as clutter to be disposed of. Indeed, alternative metrics of value exist which add nuance to the situation. Sentimental or cultural value, for example, may be entirely at odds with economic value. In a callable fee or floating fee situation, voters have little ability to seek redress, instead nurturing feelings of political disenfranchisement and anti establishment resentment. We still weigh our birds as they did in medieval times, although we use digital scales. We still make hoods, jesses, and anklets from leather in much the same fashion. Even with the addition of new species and new technology we continue to use the same language to describe our birds and equipment, Rosen expressed. Ban Zhao s Lessons For A Woman Though authored possibly centuries apart, the Confucian Analects and court historian Ban Zhao s Lessons for a Woman have far more similarities than they do differences. The reason for this complementarity is that Ban Zhao s writings are intentionally constructed to mirror the teachings of the Analects with a focus on the roles of women in society rather than those of men. She very specifically focuses on relationships between men and women, thus between the two texts a well rounded picture of the proper marriage relationship in ancient Chinese culture can be formed. • 39. Huckleberry Finn Dehumanization In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, author Mark Twin explores the dehumanization of African American slaves in American history. The novel follows Huckleberry Finn and his unlikely companion, Jim, a runaway slave, as they travel up the Mississippi River in search of a different life. While the novel focuses on racism in American society at the height of slavery, it is as controversial in today s society as it was in Mark Twain s time. When Twain wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1884, slavery had been abolished but racism was still evident in the mistreatment of African American people. Huck and Jim s story forces readers to recognize the racism that was and is in existence in America. Many schools require students to read The Adventures of Huckleberry ... After he writes a letter confessing his adventures with Jim, he rethinks sending it, and tears it up stating, All right, then, I ll GO to hell (192). When Huck says this, he is choosing his friend over society. This expresses a sense of rebellion against society that most teenagers go through. Teenagers today rebel against what society says is right, by using their own thoughts and coming up with a different conclusion. Young adults are often greatly influenced by their friends and they will do almost anything for a friend. This is what Huck is doing, and once readers realize this, they can relate to how he is feeling. It puts his situation into perspective for someone in today s world. Walking in Huck s shoes, helps students gain a better understanding of Huck s choices. Students can also relate to Huckleberry in his immature actions. In the following quote, Huck is pretending to be a girl and has already given the name Sarah Williams. But he forgets and the woman questioning him says Honey, I thought you said it was Sarah when you first come in? to which Huck replies with a quick lie. Oh, yes m, I did. Sarah Mary Williams. Sarah s my first name. Some calls me Sarah, some calls me Mary (52). After being caught in a lie, Huck proceeds to tell another one. Of course teenagers nowadays still try to use this lying strategy. But like Huck, they are often caught in the lie and end up having to tell the truth. It seems to be a second nature for most teenagers to lie when they feel like they are at fault. Causes Of The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill The 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill was the largest ship based oil spill in US waters where more than 11 million gallons of crude oil poured into the Gulf of Alaska after the ship ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The main causes of the accident were attributed to a fatigued crew, a lack of a proper navigation team while transiting through the Sound, and an inadequate ship design. The oil spill led to federal legislation for ship hull requirements, oil spill prevention and response improvements, and new escorting requirements through the Sound. On 22 March 1989, the Exxon Valdez arrived in Valdez, Alaska at 2330 to begin loading cargo bound for Long Beach, CA (Alaska Oil 1990, 5). Capt.
