My Family And The Family
Families have played a crucial role in the formation of civilization since the beginning of time.
Although the definition of what a family consists of has constantly changed and evolved, the main
idea behind the raising and continuation of the human race has always been the primary goal. As
different individuals and groups have risen to power and fallen from it there have been different
political and economic shifts that have impacted the ideals behind family. Oftentimes, people would
be highly impacted by such worldly changes and it would create personal problems leading to
emigration as well as other hardships. Mills discusses the way that personal troubles are often
contrasted with public issues even though they typically intertwine or relate in one way or another. In
my family, heritage is something that is extremely important. On my mom s side, one of my great
aunts started a Facebook page dedicated just to posting old pictures with historical context of some of
my late family members. Although they have been deceased for most of, or my entire lifetime, it is
really eye opening to get a brief glimpse into the lives they lead and why they lived that way. Most of
my family is from Indiana currently, but we have ties leading back to the early 1900s in France. There
is no certain date as to when my great great great grandfather moved, but we know it was before 1920
so it can be inferred that perhaps the emigration had to do with political hardship created when France

Programming Bacteria To Sense Pressure Case Study
Programming bacteria to sense pressure
Neydis Moreno and Megan N. McClean
Pattern generating circuits coupled to production of organic material with inorganic interfaces allow
bacterial colonies to generate composite structures with unique function.
Mother Nature generates sophisticated and complicated structures from the humblest of ingredients.
Often their construction relies on the self assembly of building blocks resulting in hybrid structures
that combine both organic and inorganic materials. For example, Shewanella bacteria are capable of
forming extracellular networks of arsenic sulfide nanotubes with unique electrical and
photoconductive properties1. Our ability to mimic these natural processes to create desirable nano and

Cao, et al2 take advantage of an existing circuit capable of generating spatial patterning in two
dimensional populations of bacteria6 to pattern production of a modified curli protein in colonies of E.
coli. Curli is an extracellular amyloid material produced by E. coli that forms fibrils based on self
assembly of the major secreted curli subunit (CsgA) and an additional subunit CsgB. The authors
utilize the circuit described in Payne, et al (which consists of a positive feedback loop (mutant T7
RNA polymerase T7RNAP activates its own expression) and a negative feedback loop based on
production of a diffusible quorum sensing molecule AHL (see Figure 1). . Expression of the curli
protein occurs at high levels of the quorum sensing molecule AHL. By engineering curli to contain a
polyhistidine tag (6XHis) it can be interfaced with inorganic materials, for example, gold
nanoparticles conjugated to Ni Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA).
Cao et al use ink jet printing to print cells onto membranes to form single colonies of E. coli
containing this synthetic curli producing circuit. They found that the spatial patterning circuit caused
curli to be expressed in the exterior of the colony, forming domed curli structures. In contrast, cells
constitutively expressing curli without the patterning

Violating Moral Principles
If you can t solve a problem due to playing by the rules, break the rules. To clarify, lacking or
violating moral principles is what immoral or unethical stands for. Following this, is it sometime
acceptable to be immoral or unethical for, rules might go against your morals, no one is perfect and,
many people have gotten to where they are by being unethical. when you have to compromise your
morals for the people around you, change the people around you. For instance, in God s Not Dead a
teacher spoke to a student about her christian beliefs. The school has a rule about not speaking about
religious beliefs. So, another student told on the teacher and, the court got involved. The teacher
lawyer wanted her to apologize for her speaking about her beliefs but, taking back what she said
would be going against her morals. The teacher tried and tied to convince a jury that what she did
wasn t bad. In the end. The teacher won t and she went back to teaching. No one is perfect but, don t
change who you are for other people. Additionally, we were all born to be who we are, not to be
perfect. For example, in the bible there s a famous story about Noah s ark but, most people don t know

The Invention Of The Automobile Industry Essay
Cars are definitely the biggest invention on history changing the way humans transport. In the past,
there were no vehicles and therefore people used to walk while only the few lucky had the privilege of
enjoying a horse ride. There were also horse wagons which were made in order to increase the number
of persons who could be carried (Lynn, 54). However, in the year 1907, Henry Ford invented the first
car model which was referred to as T model, that allowed everyone to own a automobile. In this paper
I will argue the importance of cars through history and why cars are the biggest history humans have
created using too expecific examples from history. The T model reinvented the automobile industry
making automobiles accessible for every social class. And almost a century after Toyota car company
reinvented again the automobile industry creating the first hybrid named Prius. The importance of
automobiles in history is obvious and this two creation will teach you why. In the year 1903, there was
the formation of a Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers (ALAM) which was aimed at
ensuring that only the licensed dealers could be allowed to produce and sell vehicles (Grimm, 51).
There was however rule and regulations that they had to follow and failure to adhere would have led
to being overthrown from the business. During the invention of T model, the government was in the
process of eliminating monopolies which had taken the better part of the economy. These included

Analysis Of When The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In...
For decades discrimination has been continuously growing, being angled at minority groups. These
negative outlooks have created many barriers and disadvantages, with society, for those belonging to
different cultures. Each set of characters within the stories are created with different backgrounds, but
live with similar expectations and struggles. These barriers occur in day to day activities and
interactions, affecting individuals, and creating negativity. Paul K. Chappell once said, To truly listen
to others, we must develop empathy. If we do not empathize with people, we cannot really hear what
they are saying. When we do not listen with empathy, we hear only their words (Chappell). White
reading each short story, Amy Tan s Two Kinds, and Sherman Alexie s When the Lone Ranger and
Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, the reader is able to connect the stories characters through race, culture, and
ethnicity to create that feeling of empathy Chappell was trying to introduce.
In the stories, two kinds and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we see how the families
each are treated poorly because they are of different races. In two kinds the family is a Chinese family.
When moving to the United States Tan must change to look more like an American girl so they cut her
hair. Tan explains her change by saying, I now had hair the length of a boys, with straight across bangs
that hung at a slant two inches above my eyebrow (516). Tans original look made her stand out too
much compared to an American child. By cutting off her hair she felt that she could finally become
perfect (516). By explaining the drastic changes they felt were needed Tan is showing how far
individuals are willing to go in order to be accepted. In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in
Heaven the characters is spoken poorly to by an officer. When found driving around late at night the
main character is told you should be more careful where you drive, says the officer continuing with,
your making people nervous. You don t fit the profile of the neighborhood (35). The young man is
being told that people are afraid of him because of how he looks. The color of his skin or the length of

Analysis Of The Poem The Wife Of Bath Essay
Analytical Essay on the Wife of Bath.
By Chaucer s time, the antifeminism tradition was very strong and had grown up. Her faith on
marriage is surprising to men, especially during that period of time. She is a skilled woman, and
knows how to defend her views on marriage and sex, in which she blows the idealistic of
antifeminism by interpreting the bible to her benefit. And, when someone in authority disagrees with
her, she relies on her experience. Wife of Bath Tale provides insight and understanding of the women
change and their view mainly in matters of family, marriage, authority and marital affairs. The Prolog
is double the size of her Tale, a lot of information about marriage is given, the position of women in
the society and their quest for control and authority. Wife of Bath can be said to be a very progressive
woman (Minnis, 2008). To start with, her own Prolog has been displayed being twice the size of Tale.
The length Prologue is a clear indication of how much she is being focused upon and holding a lot of
attention and control in the whole Tale. Wife of Bath shares her information showing that she is a
woman of progress and activities as well as the change in her Tale. She announces about herself that
she has already have had five husbands near the holy grounds of the church place. Giving information
and description of how she has mastered the art of engaging men and handling them in bed and love
affairs, The Wife of Bath does not see anything wrong with

Essay on Comparing Hinduism and Buddhism
Comparing Hinduism and Buddhism
While Hinduism and Buddhism come from the same cultural backgrounds, they are extremely diverse
in their beliefs on afterlife, deity, and rituals. Both religions believe in reincarnation, but it is where an
individual goes after he or she gets off the endless cycle that differs. These religions also part when it
comes to whom they do or do not worship. Every religion comes with rituals and Hinduism and
Buddhism are no exceptions.
Hindu followers have no doubt they go to moksha after they accomplish redemption, but Buddhists
believe that the main goal is to achieve nirvana in the afterlife. A Hindu can conquer redemption by
living a life of asceticism. After becoming a Sadhu, or holy man, and renouncing ... Show more

The Eight Fold Path essentially states pupils should have the right knowledge, speech, aspirations,
behavior, livelihood, efforts, mindfulness, and know self concentration. Following the Eight Fold Path
leads to achieving nirvana.
Another distinction between Hinduism and Buddhism is their concepts of deity. Although Hinduism
claims to be a monotheistic religion, worshiping only Brahma Nerguna, Hindus worship 33 million
other gods that are aspects of Brahma Nerguna. Some of the most common gods or aspects are
Ganesha, Vishnu, and Shiva. Ganesha is the god of good luck, Vishnu is the god of families, health,
and children, and Shiva is the destroyer. Buddhism has different branches that seem to contradict its
original teachings. Some Buddhists worship Buddha, while the remainder of Buddhist think of
Buddha as just a man and follow his teachings.
An additional polarity of Hindus and Buddhists are their unique rituals and practices. The most
fundamental ceremonies for every Hindu are those that involve the rites of passage. These begin with
the first time a child eats solid food. The last rites are the funeral ceremonies and the yearly offerings
to dead ancestors. Rotating prayer wheels is a ritual of Tibetan Buddhists. The prayer wheels have
inscribed mantras or sacred chants. The wheel is believed to release benevolent forces and acquire
merit for the worshipper.
Hinduism and Buddhism have a variety of different beliefs. In Hinduism you become one

revolutionised the way people are communicating and transferring the data and information. The best

The banking industry also involves the practice of offering varied products which are necessary to
ensure that they are able to maintain the advantage in a highly competitive field and the globalization
has brought in different players who are vying for the same number of customers and this forces the
banks and financial institutions to look for various avenues to meet the customer needs. However, it
needs to be understood that the Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) had the most penetration in the
environment in comparison to other measures like phone banking, mobile banking, and internet
banking. There has been an exodus of offers with which the banks have penetrated in the economy and
this sea change has been made possible by the availability of technology. However, there is a still a
percentage of customers who would believe in the concept of conventional banking in comparison to
the modern banking methods which are confusing and at times intrusive for the conventional customer
who would still rely on the bricks and mortar banking system which works on hard physical currency
being transacted over the counter. (Yaha and Laura, 1990) There are many reasons for the deep
distrust towards the advancement that has been witnessed in the technology front, like the old age
people who are not adept at the system feel that it has nothing new to offer to them. However, the

However, in JetBlue s situation a corporate advertising program would not be sufficient to overcome
the customer service and communications issues stemming from the Valentine s Day crisis. What
JetBlue needed was an overhaul of their company culture which needed to start at the top. David

Doug s Short Story
As Doug and I walked into the room, the old familiar smell of band crept around me. A smell best
described as a mix of dirty carpet and metal; the majority of my free time in middle/ high school was
spent within the realm. Now 18, and out of high school, I set out to help Doug with his band s halftime
show, due to his shortage of staff, a task which seemed very easy at the time. Following the first day,
however, I abruptly found out how difficult the task was and the degree of perseverance needed to be a
successful tech. Doug is my cousin s fiance and the band teacher at a private catholic school. Slender
in build, polite and talented, we hadn t spent much time together prior to the upcoming week. But
based off of past encounters, I sensed the two of us would easily get along. Before the first day began,
Doug had given me a folder containing the show music. The brown cardboard folder, held about
twenty pages of show music, with the titles: Jurassic Park Fantasy , Indiana Jones , and Stars Wars/E.T
, a playlist meant to honor the famous composer: John Williams. But for the week, Doug noted, we
would mainly focus on Jurassic Park. And as I scanned through the pages, it definitely seemed
reachable. The rhythms had been simplified to accommodate a high school level and the note ranges
also seemed easier. Now sitting in Doug s office, awaiting the arrival of the children, I asked Doug,

Ms.Seda Joseph Rosendo PD 5 May 3, 2016 At the end of the novel of The Great Gatsby, Nick
recounts all the things that had just occurred and says I see now that this has been a story of the West,
after all Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed
some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life. Nick says it was a
story of the West because they all had the common trait of being lured and accustomed into the
Eastern style instead of their origins in the West. The West proven to not be the preferable home of
each of these characters, as they all made the decision to move to the East. On the East, where there
was a rapid and growing dream of wealth and prosperity. Once they achieve this, they think they can
do what ever they want, after all they have gotten the classic American dream so now what is there to
achieve? Although the wealthy should hold high profile images, much trouble is caused by them as
portrayed by some of the main characters in the book. Tom, Gatsby and Daisy are each characters that
couldn t adapt to Eastern life. Each went through different fates, but all with the common deficiency
of being affected negatively by Eastern life and portray an overall story of their lives rooted from the
West. First, there is Tom Buchanan, who came from Chicago and went to college with Nick. At the
time he was a football player and of course a giant with hardheaded features, that

Catcher In The Rye And The Kite Runner First Person Narrative
First person narrative expresses a point of view giving the greatest sense of identity of the character.
People are all different. Different colours, religions, different morals and beliefs, and maybe most
important different perspectives on the world. In both The Catcher in the Rye in The Kite Runner the
male protagonist tells the course of events from their perspective, and their role as narrator has a
significant impact on the novels In both The Catcher in the Rye, and The Kite Runner, first person
narration played a critical role in helping the reader know and understand the main characters, Holden
Caulfield Amir. From this perspective the reader gets to encounter the innermost thoughts on Holden
Amir s perspective on life and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Amir grew up with a sense of entitlement, and a loyal servant/friend in Hassan. After Hassan s rape,
Amir is stricken with grief and tries to console himself by saying that he is better than Hassan because
Hassan is a Hazara and has a cleft lip. It s here where the disgusting mindset of Amir, a perspective
that only the reader has the opportunity to understand. Hassan knew. He knew I d seen everything in
that alley, that I d stood there and done nothing. He knew I had betrayed him and yet he was rescuing
me once again, maybe for the last time. (Kite 9.29) This quote perfectly encapsulates Amir s feelings
of extreme grief for what he did to Hassan. This is a recurring theme within the book, the reader sees
the anxiety that Amir feels for betraying Hassan in the alley that day, and from that day he does his
best to repent for his unatoned sins.
Another importance of first person narrative within The Catcher in the Rye and The Kite Runner is it
allows the reader to empathize with the characters of the novels. In both novels the narrator/main
character is not the most likeable. Holden Caulfield is a very cynical and jaded narrator, and finds the
hypocrisy and ugliness of the world around him almost unbearable, through his cynicism he tries to
protect himself from the pain and disappointment of the adult world. Amir is a complex character like
all protagonist narrator s are. He isn t all bad, but he has a crippled conscious, and makes very

Symbolism in Kate Chopin s The Awakening Essay
Symbolism in Kate Chopin s The Awakening
Chopin s The Awakening is full of symbolism. Rather than hit the reader on the head with blunt
literalism, Chopin uses symbols to relay subtle ideas. Within each narrative segment, Chopin provides
a symbol that the reader must fully understand in order to appreciate the novel as a whole. I will
attempt to dissect some of the major symbols and give possible explanations as to their importance
within the text.
Art itself is a symbol of both freedom and failure. In her attempt to become an artist, Edna reaches the
zenith of her awakening. She begins to truly understand pure art as a means of self expression as well
as self assertion. In a similar way, Mlle. Reisz sees the path to ... Show more content on

A division exists between her and her environment as well as between her social character and her
awakening instincts (59). When she commits suicide she is finally naked, she has shed everything she
has in her quest for selfhood. But it is not only Edna who is symbolized in clothes, Adele is more
careful of her face in the seventh chapter and wears a veil. Both she and Madame Leburn constantly
make clothes to cover the body, and the woman in black and Mlle. Reisz never change their clothes,
symbolizing their distance from any physical attachment.
There are several symbolic meals in the text and each stress mythic aspects in the text. The meal on
Cheniere Caminada occurs after she awakens from a fairy tale sleep; the dinner party in chapter thirty
is viewed by some as a re creation of the Last Supper.
There are many symbolic houses in the novel: the one on Grand Isle, the one in New Orleans, the
pigeon house, the house in which Edna falls asleep on Cheniere Caminada. The first two of these
houses serve as cages for Edna. She is expected to be a mother woman on Grand Isle and to be the
perfect social hostess in New Orleans. The other two are places of supposed freedom. On the island
she can sleep and dream, and in the pigeon house she can create a world of her own. In the same way,
places have a similar significance. Grand Isle itself is a place of women.

Catalase Experiment
Discussion: According to the experiment, the highest reaction rate occurred when the enzyme,
Catalase, was 50% concentrated (see Fig.3). However, all of the rates were fairly similar no matter the
concentration, except for the test with 0% concentration. That test resulted in no production of Oxygen
because there was no enzyme for the Hydrogen peroxide to react to so nothing occurred in the testing
container (see Fig. 1). In Fig. 2, you can see that all of the concentrations, aside from 0%
concentration all produced very similar amounts of Oxygen even though there was not as much of the
enzyme in the tests that we added water to in order to change the concentration. The water took the
place of a portion of the enzyme, or all of it, to keep a constant volume of enzyme mixture and to see
how changing the amount enzymes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We used this information to form our hypothesis, which was that the 100% concentration test would
have the highest reaction rate because the more enzyme is the more active sites there are, so more
reactions can occur, and the the Hydrogen peroxide will be decomposed faster, giving it a higher rate.
However, the results of our experiment did not support this. Like explained before, the test that
resulted in the highest rate was the one with 50% concentration. It is unknown why this occurred. The
sources provided in class, a graph, showed that there should be linear growth between concentration
and rate, which supports our hypothesis. Fig. 2 shows that the reaction rate plateaus towards the end of
the 50 seconds, but this is because of the limited and constant amount of substrate, so it slowed down
when the Hydrogen peroxide ran out. Our data did not support our hypothesis, but the class source

Instructions: Please answer all questions
Question 1
Define the following terms used in food and agribusiness value chains. Give specific examples in your
answers
a. Agrifood value chains
A value chain is the range of activities required to bring a raw product to market. It is in a vertical
sequence and is often described as pond to plate, plough to plate, or farm to fork in an agri business
value chain. (Sturgeon, 2001)
b. Value creation
Value is created as goods move along the chain; at each stop value must be added for the consumer to
be willing to pay the price. Value can include packaging, cleaning labeling but also through
auctioneers and wholesalers. (Sturgeon, 2001)
c. Value chain market orientation
Market orientation refers to how the end market receives the value added product. To be successful a
value chain must be receptive to the demands of the market orientation. This can be monitored
through customer feedback processes. (Sturgeon, 2001)

Amory Blaine In F. Scott Fitzgerald s This Side Of Paradise
A significant part of F. Scott Fitzgerald s This Side of Paradise describes the time that the main
character, Amory Blaine, has spent at Princeton University. Through the portrayal of the several
characters, the novel shows that the years spent at Princeton either turned the students into a
homogenous mass or, on the contrary, prompted them to deviate from the crowd. A typical student
from the novel can most likely be described as a Princeton slicker (51). The slickers are predominantly
smart, well dressed and successful, but what truly draws the line between them and the other students
is the slickers sense of social values (40), or, in other words, their snobbishness. The very structure of

The word conventionalize seems to fully capture the negative impact that the college may have on one
s core values, as later Tom himself is accused of being conventionalized (126) when Amory Blaine
thinks he is no longer standing against people (126). Amory, too, becomes disillusioned with the idea
of being a slicker , and this is reflected in the nonchalance he develops towards all of the student
organizations and in a shift in the objects of his admiration. As a freshman and a sophomore, Amory
was fascinated by of Dick Hornby, a perfect type of aristocrat (78) with an air of elegance and style.
As an upperclassman, however, Amory grew fond of Burne Holiday, an enthusiastic pacifist and
socialist who seemed too eccentric to the rest of the college community. Unlike Dick Hornby, who
attracted Amory s attention merely because of the impression he made in public, Burne Holiday
strucks Amory because of his intense earnestness (117) and the unique path he chose to follow. This
change in Amory s values thus proves that, in time, he, too, has overgrown the snobbishness and
superficiality of the Princeton s student community and became more

Alexander the Great Conquest
Alexander the Great s Distribution of Culture
Someone who has abilities above the normal or average person is considered great. In this case, were
talking about Alexander the infamous Greek invader. Alexander the Great was a man of conquest and
curiosity. By the age of twenty he had already conquered many of his local Grecian city states and had
established himself as a leader. His desire to conquer and explore grew as he aged. As he travelled he
took along with him the morals and customs of the place he was from. Alexander the Great spread
Greek culture through conquest and the use of cultural manipulation.

His leadership skills and large military allowed him to usurp most of Asia and Persia. Cultures clashed
and ideals mixed. Alexander forced his men to marry persian women in order to try to make things

culture of Macedonia/Greece. As these two cultures were forced upon each other, Alexander left
leaving behind some of his men who did no wish to go with him. These men settled there and took
local women. (Document F.) A new culture arose from what Alexander left behind. His conquest
forced cultures to collide, and before things even began to happen, Alexander left.
After Alexander ravaged through Persia and North Africa, something was left behind. After he tricked
cultures into thinking he was their leader, and attracting the Persians with his strict but ordered
principles, something was left behind. Through conquest and curiosity Alexander the Great spread his
ideas and customs, and what he left behind was a multitude of coexisting cultures. Conquest forced
some of the cultures cultures to coalesce while deceit allowed others to mix. Alexander the Great

The Influence Of The Bobo Doll Experiment
In the contemporary world, there are several considerations regarding the impact of social influences
on the development and growth of a child s temperament and morality.
Television, computer games, food additives, music and the lack of role models are all cited as reasons

These concerns have existed for several years, even before the media turned these factors into

§ Who is using an IM system at work?
§ What systems are employees using?
§ Where did employees get the software?
§ How often is IM being used?
§ Under what circumstances are employees using IM?
§ Who are they talking to?
§ What is the content of the conversations?

Racial Inequality In Schools
Diversity is recognizing a person s differences as far as religion, ethnic group, sexual orientation, etc.
Diversity can be seen in a workplace, schools, restaurants, or any public area. Often diversity courses
aim to explain that racism not only entails attitudes but also affects the opportunity structure in U.S.
society; thus, the content of such courses should decrease the extent to which students view inequality
as the result of individual short comings (Cole, E. R., Case, K. A., Rios, D., Curtin, N.). Yes,
psychology is the study of the mind however; learning the many different diversities is also learned

A sophisticated understanding of race also entails sensitivity to the fact that race and racism are

social and religious setting for the rise of Islam. Its successful emergence was due in part to the
adoption and rejection of various factors which allowed Islam to mirror the socioeconomic trends,
traditions, practices and religious theories that were prevalent throughout the region during this time
period. One of the most influential events on the rise of Islam was in the rise of Mecca as a center of

Prior to the rise of Islam most of the people of the Arabian Peninsula were polytheistic. Their beliefs
consisted of multiple powers that governed a chaotic and disorganized world, which mirrored their
view of society, man, and nature as separate elements. They worshiped various elements of life, like
the moon, the sun, ancestors and nature. The situation was entirely different in the surrounding regions
where there was a tectonic shift away from polytheism to monotheism. This influenced the Arabian
Peninsula because it was sandwiched between the Christian Byzantine Empire and the Zoroastrian
Sasanian Empire. The rise of Islam is quite logical in this religious climate. First and foremost the fact
that Islam is a monotheistic religion represents the overall rise in popularity of monotheism and the
decline of polytheism in the region. This was due in part to the religious changes that came with the
rise of Mecca and the intermingling of people that I previously discussed. In this environment the idea
of monotheism is introduced by traveling Christians and Jews. This along with other concepts,
theories and ideas, allowed for people to shake of the mental, emotional, and religious restrains of the

Maryland, Virginia, and North and South Carolina. From these states, they traveled to the Delaware

video stores and provided services to almost three million of customers in America and 24 other
countries (p. 74). In 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy since it failed to adapt new technology in
their strategies, and was sold to satellite TV service provider DISH Network in 2011 (Biesada b).
Blockbuster used to have so much power in the movie rental industry until Redbox and Netflix have
come to the market. One of Porter s five forces ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Based on the Form 10 K (2010), Blockbuster stated that: Our level of indebtedness may make it more
difficult for us to pay our debts as they become due and more necessary for us to divert our cash flow
from operations to debt service payments (p. 22). At the end of 2009, their long term debt went up to
855.9 million of dollars (Form 10 K, p.40). One of the factors that negatively affected Blockbuster s
income and cash flow due to their debt obligation was the payment due date. It made even more
difficult for Blockbuster to pay off the debts when the company faced economic downturns. The
decrease in revenue made Blockbuster s obligation and interest higher. Due to this fact, the company
had a limited fund to contribute their strategy and operation. While their revenue decreased and debt
increased, Blockbuster gradually lost their ability to remain the war price as low as others. The
company ended up going bankrupt. The first failure of Blockbuster s strategies, which lead it to
bankruptcy, was the negative relationship with their consumers. While Netflix s chief executive, Reed
Hastings, recognized the technology had been grown rapidly and would change the transmission of
movie rental industry, Blockbuster s CEO, James Keyes, believed that consumers would still prefer to
the brick and mortar rental structure. Thus, Keyes planned to focus on expanding Blockbuster s stores

The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel
April 12, 1999 marked the Seventh Millennium Evening at the White House and the 54th year after
Franklin Roosevelt s death. Years after personally experiencing the horrors of the Holocaust and
World War II, Elie Wiesel shared his story with America among the President and First lady, Hillary
Clinton, to inspire the world to act upon social and political injustices. In his speech The Perils of
Indifference , Wiesel opened up about his past and how it made him realize how important it is to
stand up against crimes against humanity. He also discussed the state of the American people and
compared their involvement in foreign intervention back to the lack of intervention in World War II.
Wiesel motivated America with his emphasis on the emotional, logical, and ethical impacts of
indifference. Perhaps the most influential piece of Wiesel s speech was his inclusion of unique
personal narrative. His touching story of his youth spent in a concentration camp gave weight to his
points on indifference as he recalled that Fifty four years ago to the day, a young Jewish boy from a
small town in the Carpathian Mountains woke up...in a place of eternal infamy called Buchenwald
(Wiesel). With no property to their name and no individual rights, they marched to Buchenwald where
his father later died before they could both escape ( Wiesel, Elie ). The reality of these past horrors
gave him a strong sense of credibility as he spoke on about the time when he was oppressed and
victimized.

Essay on The Theme of Change in Madame Bovary
The Theme of Change in Madame Bovary
Change is a central theme in the novel Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, and is key to
understanding the character of Emma Bovary. Through parallel events the reader comes to realize that
Emma s need for change is the result of the influence her early life had upon her. At the convent
Emma is left to develop into an extreme romantic with high hopes for excitement and dreams of
sensuous pleasures that will never be fulfilled. Thus, when life refuses to conform to her romantic
notions Emma alternates between various activities in her constant search for a way to consummate
her romantic longings.
As a young girl from the country Emma is placed into a convent in the city. Here ... Show more

However, none of these are enough for Emma. With each occupation she takes up she soon becomes
bored and rejects one activity for another. Emma does not understand that she is a middle class
woman, in a middle class existence and that no amount of hope will result in the fulfillment of her
dreams. Instead of coming to the realization that fantasy is fantasy and reality is life she fritters away
her time in daydreaming of another life, waiting for something to happen. When Leon leaves for Paris,
Emma, left in the dull town of Yonnville, buys a plan of Paris, and moving the tip of her finger on the
map, she would wander about the capital. She subscribes to Parisian magazines searching in their
writings for vicarious satisfaction of her own desires. If she is not able to change her reality Emma is
left to the imagination of her mind to conjure up a new and exciting life. In a constant search for the
rare and expensive things of life Emma misses the obvious and simple pleasures that are hers to enjoy.
Even the secret and sensual pleasures of adultery do not satisfy Emma. No man can possibly live up to
her ideal lover. As Flaubert so cleverly states, Emma does not understand that one must not touch
idols; the gilt rubs off on one s hands. What Emma wants out of her affairs and life in

  • 2. My Family And The Family Families have played a crucial role in the formation of civilization since the beginning of time. Although the definition of what a family consists of has constantly changed and evolved, the main idea behind the raising and continuation of the human race has always been the primary goal. As different individuals and groups have risen to power and fallen from it there have been different political and economic shifts that have impacted the ideals behind family. Oftentimes, people would be highly impacted by such worldly changes and it would create personal problems leading to emigration as well as other hardships. Mills discusses the way that personal troubles are often contrasted with public issues even though they typically intertwine or relate in one way or another. In my family, heritage is something that is extremely important. On my mom s side, one of my great aunts started a Facebook page dedicated just to posting old pictures with historical context of some of my late family members. Although they have been deceased for most of, or my entire lifetime, it is really eye opening to get a brief glimpse into the lives they lead and why they lived that way. Most of my family is from Indiana currently, but we have ties leading back to the early 1900s in France. There is no certain date as to when my great great great grandfather moved, but we know it was before 1920 so it can be inferred that perhaps the emigration had to do with political hardship created when France ... McClean Pattern generating circuits coupled to production of organic material with inorganic interfaces allow bacterial colonies to generate composite structures with unique function. Mother Nature generates sophisticated and complicated structures from the humblest of ingredients. Often their construction relies on the self assembly of building blocks resulting in hybrid structures that combine both organic and inorganic materials. For example, Shewanella bacteria are capable of forming extracellular networks of arsenic sulfide nanotubes with unique electrical and photoconductive properties1. Cao, et al2 take advantage of an existing circuit capable of generating spatial patterning in two dimensional populations of bacteria6 to pattern production of a modified curli protein in colonies of E. coli. Curli is an extracellular amyloid material produced by E. coli that forms fibrils based on self assembly of the major secreted curli subunit (CsgA) and an additional subunit CsgB. The authors utilize the circuit described in Payne, et al (which consists of a positive feedback loop (mutant T7 RNA polymerase T7RNAP activates its own expression) and a negative feedback loop based on production of a diffusible quorum sensing molecule AHL (see Figure 1). . Expression of the curli protein occurs at high levels of the quorum sensing molecule AHL. By engineering curli to contain a polyhistidine tag (6XHis) it can be interfaced with inorganic materials, for example, gold nanoparticles conjugated to Ni Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). Cao et al use ink jet printing to print cells onto membranes to form single colonies of E. coli containing this synthetic curli producing circuit. They found that the spatial patterning circuit caused curli to be expressed in the exterior of the colony, forming domed curli structures. In contrast, cells constitutively expressing curli without the patterning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Analysis Of When The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In... For decades discrimination has been continuously growing, being angled at minority groups. These negative outlooks have created many barriers and disadvantages, with society, for those belonging to different cultures. Each set of characters within the stories are created with different backgrounds, but live with similar expectations and struggles. These barriers occur in day to day activities and interactions, affecting individuals, and creating negativity. Paul K. Chappell once said, To truly listen to others, we must develop empathy. If we do not empathize with people, we cannot really hear what they are saying. When we do not listen with empathy, we hear only their words (Chappell). White reading each short story, Amy Tan s Two Kinds, and Sherman Alexie s When the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, the reader is able to connect the stories characters through race, culture, and ethnicity to create that feeling of empathy Chappell was trying to introduce. In the stories, two kinds and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, we see how the families each are treated poorly because they are of different races. In two kinds the family is a Chinese family. When moving to the United States Tan must change to look more like an American girl so they cut her hair. Tan explains her change by saying, I now had hair the length of a boys, with straight across bangs that hung at a slant two inches above my eyebrow (516). Tans original look made her stand out too much compared to an American child. By cutting off her hair she felt that she could finally become perfect (516). By explaining the drastic changes they felt were needed Tan is showing how far individuals are willing to go in order to be accepted. In The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven the characters is spoken poorly to by an officer. When found driving around late at night the main character is told you should be more careful where you drive, says the officer continuing with, your making people nervous. Both religions believe in reincarnation, but it is where an individual goes after he or she gets off the endless cycle that differs. These religions also part when it comes to whom they do or do not worship. Every religion comes with rituals and Hinduism and Buddhism are no exceptions. Another importance of first person narrative within The Catcher in the Rye and The Kite Runner is it allows the reader to empathize with the characters of the novels. In both novels the narrator/main character is not the most likeable. Holden Caulfield is a very cynical and jaded narrator, and finds the hypocrisy and ugliness of the world around him almost unbearable, through his cynicism he tries to protect himself from the pain and disappointment of the adult world. • 24. Symbolism in Kate Chopin s The Awakening Essay Symbolism in Kate Chopin s The Awakening Chopin s The Awakening is full of symbolism. Rather than hit the reader on the head with blunt literalism, Chopin uses symbols to relay subtle ideas. Within each narrative segment, Chopin provides a symbol that the reader must fully understand in order to appreciate the novel as a whole. I will attempt to dissect some of the major symbols and give possible explanations as to their importance within the text. Art itself is a symbol of both freedom and failure. In her attempt to become an artist, Edna reaches the zenith of her awakening. She begins to truly understand pure art as a means of self expression as well as self assertion. In a similar way, Mlle. When she commits suicide she is finally naked, she has shed everything she has in her quest for selfhood. But it is not only Edna who is symbolized in clothes, Adele is more careful of her face in the seventh chapter and wears a veil. Both she and Madame Leburn constantly make clothes to cover the body, and the woman in black and Mlle. Reisz never change their clothes, symbolizing their distance from any physical attachment. There are several symbolic meals in the text and each stress mythic aspects in the text. The meal on Cheniere Caminada occurs after she awakens from a fairy tale sleep; the dinner party in chapter thirty is viewed by some as a re creation of the Last Supper. There are many symbolic houses in the novel: the one on Grand Isle, the one in New Orleans, the pigeon house, the house in which Edna falls asleep on Cheniere Caminada. The first two of these houses serve as cages for Edna. She is expected to be a mother woman on Grand Isle and to be the perfect social hostess in New Orleans. The other two are places of supposed freedom. On the island she can sleep and dream, and in the pigeon house she can create a world of her own. In the same way, places have a similar significance. • 25. Catalase Experiment Discussion: According to the experiment, the highest reaction rate occurred when the enzyme, Catalase, was 50% concentrated (see Fig.3). However, all of the rates were fairly similar no matter the concentration, except for the test with 0% concentration. That test resulted in no production of Oxygen because there was no enzyme for the Hydrogen peroxide to react to so nothing occurred in the testing container (see Fig. 1). In Fig. 2, you can see that all of the concentrations, aside from 0% concentration all produced very similar amounts of Oxygen even though there was not as much of the enzyme in the tests that we added water to in order to change the concentration. We used this information to form our hypothesis, which was that the 100% concentration test would have the highest reaction rate because the more enzyme is the more active sites there are, so more reactions can occur, and the the Hydrogen peroxide will be decomposed faster, giving it a higher rate. However, the results of our experiment did not support this. Like explained before, the test that resulted in the highest rate was the one with 50% concentration. It is unknown why this occurred. The sources provided in class, a graph, showed that there should be linear growth between concentration and rate, which supports our hypothesis. Fig. 2 shows that the reaction rate plateaus towards the end of the 50 seconds, but this is because of the limited and constant amount of substrate, so it slowed down when the Hydrogen peroxide ran out. • 27. Amory Blaine In F. Scott Fitzgerald s This Side Of Paradise A significant part of F. Scott Fitzgerald s This Side of Paradise describes the time that the main character, Amory Blaine, has spent at Princeton University. Through the portrayal of the several characters, the novel shows that the years spent at Princeton either turned the students into a homogenous mass or, on the contrary, prompted them to deviate from the crowd. A typical student from the novel can most likely be described as a Princeton slicker (51).
