that the Franklin s actions were rescuing the Squire from an awkward
predicament (Specht 154) in which his tale was threatening to go on far

two reasons. First of all, the Squire gives no indication he wishes to be

the telling of the next section. For the Franklin to begin speaking at

A different argument for self identification comes from an old social norm developed during the
era of slavery known as the one drop rule. This rule states that a multiracial person is assigned to
the race with the lowest social standing among the races represented. Going off of previous
history and other social norms, the hierarchy would be as follows: non Hispanic white, Asian,
Latinos, and lastly black. When forcing a youth to choose between one of their multiple races,
those with some black or Latino heritage are far more likely to report being black or Latino than
those with white or Asian heritage are to report being white or Asian (Herman 2009). Herman s
study in 2009 examines the difference in grades between students of mixed races. Her ultimate
conclusion is that self identification is the main indicating factor in academic achievement.
Students possessing black or Latino ancestry are associated with decreased grades whereas
students with white or Asian ancestry tend to do better. However, she also looked at the difference
in grades between students of the same biracial category who self identify differently. Those who
identify as Asian or white do significantly better in school than those who identify as black or
Latino. An interesting conclusion from the study shows that where there is a difference between

The object I chose to draw was a stained glass window depicting the thirteenth station of the cross,
where the crucified Jesus is laid into the arms of His mother, Mary. This object is colorful and
vivid, with the people in the window image portrayed in bright colors in contrast to the background.
In addition, the people portrayed have precise naturalistic details and proportions regarding their
clothing, bodies, and facial expressions. Through the exercise of drawing this stained glasswindow

Otherwise, the entire image would not look right. I did not finish drawing the window because I
wanted to place the parts proportionately so as to accurately portray the window as a whole. The
window s detail did not serve as a priority in the drawing exercise because I believed the unity of
its parts was central to making it look as accurate as possible. Additionally, I learned that the
unification of the drawing s parts were necessary in drawing the window. It can be said in the

also essential to the beauty of the window, and that drawing images is as much about using space

Human beings spend a lifetime finding the meaning of life and what makes us happy. In Aristotle
s Nicomachean s Ethics, Aristotle gives his own wisdom to his son, Nicomachean on how to
achieve the end goal of life which is happiness. He explores this virtue of happiness through many
other characteristics and virtues. One of the characteristics, Aristotle explores for one to be happy
is moderation. Overindulgence in food, sex, and drinks can lead to dangers in one s life. To obtain
happinessand live a complete life, one must be moderate.
Aristotle asserts that moderation is a mean with respect to pleasures (Aristotle 62). Aristotle takes
into account both the body and soul when discussing pleasures. What gives a person pleasures? In
many cases, food, drinks, sex, listening to one s favorite music, and even hanging out with friends
can give someone pleasure. Overindulgence of pleasures of the body (food, drink, and sex) is
limited compared to the soul (honor and learning) which is unlimited. Aristotle makes the argument
that when a person takes enjoyment in the smelling of apples, roses, or incense (Aristotle 64) they
are not licentious since that smell could remind that person of a past encounter that could signal
desire (Aristotle 64).
Aristotle then compares human to animals with the direct reference to a lion; where a lion does
not receive desire because it smells the meat of a cow, but because the lion knows that it will take

was a life that was wasted. Socrates believed that a person should question their motives and what
they valued in life. He believed a life spent pursuing material gain or power was a life that was not
