Comparing Sacrifices In The Magi And The Minor Canon
Sacrifices can come in many different forms; whether it be an object, time, a way of living, or
even a life. These sacrifices are usually made out of love. Della s sacrifice was giving up her
appearance and the way people would think of her for her husband. The Minor Canon made his
sacrifice of leaving a town for the townspeople he cared about. Both of these sacrifices were not
for personal gain, but to improve the lives of those around them. Sacrifices are a prominent part of
both The Gift of The Magi and The Griffin and The Minor Canon.
In The Gift of The Magi, Della gave up her hair for her husband, which may seem like an odd
sacrifice for an odd reason without further explanation. Della had beautiful hair, but not a lot of
money, so she sold her hair for enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. In The Griffin
and The Minor Canon, the Minor Canon gave up his way of life in the best interest of the town.

Della gave up her hair, but with that also comes the criticism and embarrassment from the
surrounding community. In the area and time that Della was in short hair could be looked down
upon. Della thought that She looked wonderfully like a schoolboy . Della already felt bad about
how her hair looked and said If Jim doesn t kill me... before he looks at me a second time, he ll
say I look like a girl who sings and dances for money. Della was already tearing herself down
before her friends and family saw her. The Minor Canon wouldn t have to worry about what his
friends and family would think, because he was giving up everything to live alone and draw the
griffin away from the town. The Minor Canon would have known that he would die since he only
carried enough food to get far away enough from the town that was needed to keep the town

Vietnam War Ethical Analysis
No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon, 1985.
Since the Vietnam War, there has been almost fifty years of remembrance, various readings, and the
publication of military documents. However, Richard Nixon s quote still has a certain veracity. The
United States has fought in many wars, but none have compelled Americans to question our
motives like the Vietnam War. The United States
should not have gotten involved in Vietnam,
because it was illegal, unjustified, and unethical.
The legality of the Vietnam War has been brought into question frequently since the Gulf of Tonkin
incident of 1964. Original United States documents blame the two separate attacks on United States
aircrafts and vessels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While many believe that the United States was fighting against communism, and communism
should be wiped off the entire face of this planet, one has to ask himself the question: is it really
worth it? However, the Vietnam War was not just botched. From the beginning, American
military officials brainwashed their soldiers into carelessly slaughtering millions of Vietnamese
for the crime of being communists. If any Vietnamese hesitated for a millisecond on listening to
an order, he was shot. If any Vietnamese was in simply in the way, he was shot. Aside from
Vietnamese casualties, more 58,000 American soldiers died in this forsaken war. According to
BBC News, the amount of ammunition fired per soldier was roughly twenty six times greater in
Vietnam than during World War II. Additionally, by the end of the war, the United States had
released the equivalent of about 640 Hiroshima sized atomic bombs on Vietnam. This begs the
question, what other things happened in this conflict that hundreds of Vietnam War novels have
conveniently hidden from the American public? Rape, torture, imprisonment, pillaging and
burning of villages, and starvation are just a few. According to Mother Jones, on August 31,
1969, a young Vietnamese girl was kidnapped, held at gunpoint, brutally gang raped, and
eventually murdered by United States soldiers. Her full story was told in the book Casualties of
War by Daniel Lang, one of the few exceptions to all the patriotic Vietnam War books out there.
Even more hidden from public scrutiny were crimes that United States soldiers committed against
other United States soldiers. A document from the National Archives tells the story of a man
called Curtis, who was viciously raped by three fellow GI s. His story is as follows: Curtis was
feeling sick that late summer day and wouldn t drink with his hootch mates, so they pounced on
him, held his mouth open, and poured whisky down his throat. When he

Emotional Intelligence And Organizational Leadership
Emotional Intelligence and Organizational Leadership
Various authors have been debating the issue of emotional intelligence and organizational
leadership. However, the existing discourse on the matter has been hampered in terms of limited
theoretical applications. Moreover, many analysts have failed to propose effective relationships
among constructs, thus failing to offer any meaningful relationship between emotional intelligence
and organizational leadership. Nevertheless, many authors offer a candid evaluation of the issue in
terms of discussing empirical data although few of them create a relationship between
organizational leadership and emotional intelligence. By considering the work of Dabke (2014) for
instance, the author is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This assertion makes his studies inconsistent. By recommending further study in the analysis of
emotional intelligence, the author contracts his empirical result. The results indicated that
participants believe that organizational leaders can use emotional intelligence for recruiting staff.
Lack of theories in this work also makes it deficient. Al Noor s work gives a detailed discussion
of leadership styles in relationship to emotional intelligence. The author decided to consider gender
differences in the way leaders manage their organizations. By discussing transactional and
leadership styles about emotional intelligence, this work can illustrate how female leaders score
higher when it comes to emotional mentoring (Noor, 2011). The author s work gives a more
meaningful discussion of the relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational
leadership. Moreover, he presents a better theoretical basis for his ideas. He uses contingency
theory as well as situational ethics in his analysis. The author is quite consistent in his analysis and
avoids overdependence on empirical data even as he forms his opinion on the issue. Most of the
works in this analysis focused on discussing research findings. The decision of the author to
combine empirical research and scholarly review distinguishes his work from others that discuss the
relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational leadership.

Animals Have Been Used For Animal Therapy From Early As
Animals have been used for animal therapy from early as the 18th century (Chu et al., 2009).
Animals have been shown to aid in lowering stress, feelings of isolation and depression. Studies
have shown that different types of animal therapy can be helpful with a range of mental illnesses,
from schizophrenia to anxiety to dementia. There are many ways that animals can be implemented
into different forms of therapy. There are uses for animals in psychological and physical therapy.
Each of these present paths to help different types of mental illnesses in separate ways. For my

That would have allowed for perspective on both sides which would have been good data to have,
but there is a lot of data to compare the characteristics that pets present that make them feel like
family members.
Next, the focus turned more on questions about therapy animals and what those surveyed knew
about animal therapy. These questions, Which animal would you choose to have as a therapy
animal? , and What animals have you seen used as therapy animals? , are able to gauge the
knowledge of therapy animals and the frequency that some animals are used compared to others.
The question about which animal the participant would choose was based on the idea of less
common animals, such as goats, being used as therapy animals and if someone would choose a
farm animal as a therapy aid.
The last section of questions focused on mental health and stress. The questions were based
around the mental health and/or stress level of the participant to see how these factors may affect
their opinion on the use of therapy animals for psychological therapy. The responses collected

their own mental health or decrease in stress levels. These questions were based off some of the
information that I found in the article by Mills (2014). He wrote about the bonds between humans

with some local sound systems. Hall s stage persona as Lady Saw is a distinct contrast to her

Types Of Political Risk Index Essay
As mentioned before, components of political risk index are divided into six sub indicators. This
section examines changes in political risks sub indicators as a response to political changes and the
mutual relationship between the six sub indicators that form political risk index in Egypt.
3.1 Behavior of and Changes in Political Risks Sub Indicators
Figure (1) shows that indicators of political risk have had noticeable changes especially after 25th
of January revolution except for government effectiveness and control of corruption indicators
which stayed at levels 0.5 and 0.33 respectively during the considered period. The following
points summarize the performance of political risks sub indicators as a response to political
changes in Egypt. An indicator with points near to 1 indicates a relatively very low risk indicator,
while an indicator with points near to 0 indicates a relatively very high risk indicator.
The most vulnerable and risky indicator of political risks sub indicators is voice and
accountability indicator, as points awarded to this indicator were always below 0.5 and hence it
is always located in very high risk zone. Prior to 25th of January (from 2006 to 2010), the
indicator recorded 0.4 average points and during revolutions period this average points has been
dropped to 0.24. Voice and accountability indicator recorded average points 0.33 during the whole
considered period (2006 2014) with standard deviation 0.09 points.

Radiometric Dating
Scientists use the Law of Superposition, the Principle of Cross Cutting Relationships, index fossils,
radiometric dating, and the Geologic Time Scale to organize Earth s 4.6 billion year old history.
The Law of Superposition is the law that states that in layers undisturbed rock, the older rocks will
be closer to the bottom and the younger rocks will be near the top. This is a helpful method used
by scientists to organize earth s history. Our Law of Superposition Worksheet showed how there
were different layers and each was a different age. We figured out that the oldest went on the
bottom and the youngest went on the top. This paper helped us to figure out how scientists would
use this to help them. If they found fossils in one layer and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Scientists can uses fossil records to look at the amount of fossils in the population, which can
also help scientists to organize the history of earth and its animals. An archaeologist claims to
have uncovered Group B fossils related to the Group B fossils from the chart above that are 40
million years old, though the archaeologist did not mention the amount of fossils. With this little
bit of information and information from the graph above, I presume that this organism may
have fought for the same resources as Group A and Group C. As the amount of fossils of Group
B decreases, the amount of fossils of Group A and Group C increased. These two groups must
have stopped Group B from becoming successful. The other possibility could have been that
something changed in the environment at around 12 million years ago that was terminal to
Group B. As group B died other groups rose in population. This is not hard to agree with because
this organism has now been recorded to have lived for at least 30 million years, while most
species live up to only 10 million years, according our Geologic Time Scale Model Worksheet
that we did in class. I can also assume that Group B was large at around 20 30 million years old,
because Groups A had a small population at that time. The large population of Group B must have
hindered Group A s ability to thrive. Another

Definition of Air Pollution
1. Definition of air pollution
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause
harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural
environment or built environment, into the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is a complex dynamic natural gaseous system that is essential to support life on
planet Earth. Stratospheric ozone depletion due to air pollution has long been recognized as a threat
to human health as well as to the Earth s ecosystems.
Indoor air pollution and urban air quality are listed as two of the world s worst pollution problems
in the 2008 Blacksmith Institute World s Worst Polluted Places report.[1]

dangerous compound which is often associated with industrial uses. * Particulate matter
Particulates, alternatively referred to as particulate matter (PM) or fine particles, are tiny particles
of solid or liquid suspended in a gas. In contrast, aerosol refers to particles and the gas together.
Sources of particulate matter can be man made or natural. Some particulates occur naturally,
originating from volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland fires, living vegetation, and sea
spray. Human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels in vehicles, power plants and various
industrial processes also generate significant amounts of aerosols. Averaged over the globe,
anthropogenic aerosols those made by human activities currently account for about 10 percent of
the total amount of aerosols in our atmosphere. Increased levels of fine particles in the air are
linked to health hazards such as heart disease,[3] altered lung function and lung cancer. * Persistent
free radicals connected to airborne fine particles could cause cardiopulmonary disease.[4][5] * Toxic
metals, such as lead, cadmium and copper. * Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) harmful to the ozone

History and Albert Einstein Albert Einstein was one of the greatest physicists of all time. His early

Einstein s was born on the 14th of March in 1879. He grew up in Ulm, Germany. Einstein had an

parts of the nation body and vice versa. This is especially true about Metro Manila which itself is

The third and one of the best ways to tour Intramuros is hiring a Kalesa. Kalesa is the Tagalog
word for a horse drawn carriage which came to light in the Philippines during the 18th century
by the Spaniards. At that period, this mode of transportation was used only by the nobles and
high ranked officials who could afford it. But nowadays Kalesa are rarely used in the streets and
are commonly seen in famous tourists spots and rural areas. Therefore to bring back the
reminiscences on how Spaniards used to travel around Philippines, it is highly recommendable to
hire a Kalesa while touring Intramuros depending on the budget. Kalesa are considered to be more
expensive than the pedicabs nevertheless it can accommodate more people depending on their
sizes. The price range varies from 350 pesos to 600 pesos for that reason its better to negotiate with
the driver/kutchero before starting the tour as some of them rip off their passengers (Ahab, 2010).

Wonderful Words Welcomed With Wedding Weight Loss Essay
Wonderful Words Welcomed with Wedding Weight Loss In August 2012, Special K cereal ran

holding a bouquet of red roses. At first glance, her wedding gown appears to be a traditional,
white, mermaid style gown; however, if a reader looks at the garment more closely, he or she
will notice words discreetly embedded into the fabric of the gown. These words are positive
attributes that people may gain if they lose weight. Special K often uses its slogan What will you
gain when you lose? , and did so in this advertisement. The advertisement is not for only the
cereal, but for a customized weight loss plan provided by Special K that will presumably include
buying Special K products. By using this weddinggown with positive bonus effects of weight loss
written on it in elegant letters, Special K creates an effective weight loss advertisement. Kellogg
s first introduced Special K during the 1950s, and began the trend of high protein cereals that has
continued well into the beginning of the 21st century (A Historical Overview 2). Special K is
generally well known as a cereal that many people will eat whilst trying to lose weight. When
eaten correctly and in moderation, Special K can certainly be an effective weight loss tool.

Subject:Role of Internal Audit
It has come to my attention that the role of internal audit is not clear to some members of the
organization outside the finance department. Therefore, it was decided that a memo is written to
explain clearly the role of internal audit.
Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting function intended to add
value and improve an organization s operations. The audit function can help an organization to
achieve objectives by evaluating an organizations risk management, control and governance
processes to help improve them.
Internal auditors (IA) assess how well risks are being managed in an organization, how the
organization is being governed and how well internal control systems and processes are working.
They report their findings to senior management, highlighting and advising management where
improvements in systems controls and processes are necessary.
By evaluating an organization s risk management and assisting management in improvement of
internal controls, IA s help management to clearly show stakeholders that they are managing the
organization well.
Different from external auditors, IA s work within an organization and their work can vary
depending on the business requirements. They do not only look at financial risks and statements
but at a range of issues that are key to a company s survival

Solicitors General Influence Supreme Court Justices
Bailey, Kamoie, and Maltzma s article answers the question to whether Solicitors General (S.G.)
influence Supreme Court justices to behave differently than they would like. The article argues
that unlike some studies that assert that S.G. s influence the justices decisions, the reality is
somewhat contradictory. They claim that Justices are more sympathetic to motions from the S.G.
when both the justice and S.G. are ideologically proximate or when the Solicitors General s
motion is conflicting to his own ideological tendency. According to them, justices will find a
solicitor general s information more credible when the solicitor general and the justice are
ideologically congruent or when the signal from the S.G. is ideologically counter to his typical
policy views . (p 72) That means justices are sympathetic to the SG s signals under two
circumstances: when their ideology is close to the S.G. s ideology or when the S.G. files a motion
that opposes his own ideological tendency.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using the signaling theory to defend their position, it makes impossible to interpret their
thinking as valid. In fact, the signaling theory suggests that organisms with contradictory interests
should be expected to communicate honestly. That means justices sympathize with the S.G. when
he files a motion that opposes his own ideological predisposition because they believe the SG
could only vote against his own ideology if he/she is sincere. Also, the authors approach focuses
on success of the S.G. rather than the influence. Bailey, Kamoie, and Maltzma s logic is that the
S.G. wins cases depending on merits; not based on its influence which I can say is partially

and for many people that is very frightening and they sometimes prefer to stay quiet and not do
anything.
In the poem, Beowulf, he was a brave warrior, a hero to the people. His honorability was so great
he had faith and believed in God. Beowulf saved the people from the monstrous Grendel when he
was terrorizing the town. I think honor is one of the characteristics that Beowulf has. An honorable
person is one who is deserving of respect. (Lynne Bratcher)It is very hard to be honorable and
honest in a world of competition, where most everyone lies and betrays each other. It takes a very
strong person, not physically but mentally and emotionally as well to be honest and honorable.
Having faith and wanting to do good by God are what makes us do the right things. Speaking the
truth when everyone else disagrees, it can sometimes be very frightening and hard for us to do
because of the fear of being rejected by others. Being loyal and helping others without accepting
nothing back in return makes us honorable.
Beowulf was a brave and courageous warrior, defeating three terrifying monsters with his bare
hands.Walking into the layer of the monster had to be very terrifying but, Beowulf courageously
went into it and behead Grendel s mother. (Heaney)Fearless and daring can guide you to be
courageous and to move in a dangerous situation. What makes a person so brave and
courageous? Was is because he was big and extremely strong? Being courageous does not mean
you have to be strong, but having heart. Moving in the face of danger. (Martha
Pasternak)Having passion about what is being done, even if it means it would be dangerous and
even fatal. There are many brave and courageous people out there in today s society. A firefighter
that goes into a burning building to save a person or a police officer that puts his or her life in the
line for

The Creation Stories And Cultural Characteristics Of The...
There are many different types of stories, some fairy tales and some are origin myths. Within each
story there are different things not seen by just reading the story and not thinking about the deeper
meaning behind it. Such as in origin myths there are cultural characteristics. Cultural
characteristics are the beliefs of a culture in which its society is based off of. These cultural
characteristics can be seen as a blend of beliefs that tie the people to the land around them. This is
very evident when looking at the creation stories of ingenious people. Each culture has different
characteristics. For example the indigenous creation stories called The Earthon Turtle s Back ,
When Grizzlies Walked Upright , and the Navajo origin legend; all have characteristics of the
Native American culture. Such as the Native American cultural characteristics that you should
respect animals, nature, and elders. Those cultural characteristics are very evident throughout the
first two stories. The third creation story has different cultural characteristics. The story The Earth
on The Turtle s back has many cultural characteristics throughout the story. They are there, but they
are hidden within story throughout the text. For example in the text the chief tells his wife that her
dreams have power. After that the chief digs up the tree, and for the Onondaga, they believe that
powerful dreams should come true. Another example of cultural characteristics throughout the text

Surveillance And Surveillance Throughout The Book,...
Surveillance is a continuous close observation of a person. Surveillance plays a key part in the
book, Villette by Charlotte Bronte. In Villette, Bronte is focusing on a specific character, Lucy
Snowe. Throughout the book Lucy is telling us about her life story while surveillance appears
throughout. The focus of this paper is on how surveillance changes over the course of Lucy s life.
Lucy s opinion of surveillance changes over time because of her age, the people who come in and
out of her life, and when she realizes she is the one being watched by different characters. In Villette
, Lucy is telling us about her life story. Throughout the whole book we can tell that Lucy is a
different age at different parts of the book. Lucy s opinion of surveillance changes as she is
growing up. In the beginning, Lucy is a young teenager living with her god mother, Mrs. Bretton.
At this point in the story, Lucy s opinion of surveillance is nonexistence, she really does not care
about the what is going on around her because at this point there is nothing big going on in her life.
As the story goes on, another young girlcomes into the Bretton house and Lucy is very curious
about who this little girl is, who she belongs to, and why she is coming to stay at her god mother
s house. Lucy comes to find out through surveillance that the little girls name is Polly and she is
coming to stay at the Bretton s house because her father is ill and is traveling and she is too young

Jeremy Bentham And Utilitarianism
Jeremy Bentham was an English philosophy (1748 1632) who challenged the idea of the Social
Contract theory, which states that the people create a social contract to agree to form of
government. Bentham opposed the idea of natural rights and followed the idea of utilitarianism.
Utilitarianism is the idea that political and moral decision should not be based on natural rights,
but based on which choice produces the greatest good for the greatest number . For an example,
this principle explains whether a student should start a food fight or not. The food fight could
cause injuries (i.e someone slipping on food), property damage, and extra work for the people who
must clean it up. Starting the food fight may produce good for some people, but... Show more

The only way to fix this would be through a classless society. In this society, there would be no
churches, and no one would have to pay for their personal properties. Money would basically be
none existent, as people will contribute to the things they want. In the Communist Manifesto,
Karl Marx writes Communism deprives no man of the power to appropriate the products of
society: all that it does is to deprive home of the power to subjugate the labor of others by means
of such appropriation (Caste 265). Under this classless society communism , everyone would be
on equal grounds with no more classes. Everyone would also be given the necessities they need
to live, such as a home. By doing this, Marx thought it would eliminate capitalism, which would
eliminate the greediness of people. Comparison As stated earlier, utilitarianism is the idea that
political and moral decisions should be not be based on the pursuit of natural rights (life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness), but based on the decision of which choice would produce the
greatest good for the greatest amount of people. In other words, one should not be selfish when it
comes to making decisions. That is what utilitarianism and Marx s classless society has in
common. Marx s classless society is also trying to eliminate the greediness of society, which is a
form of selfishness. Both philosophies are ultimately trying to better society in their own way, but
both are trying to eliminate the

The Writer s Diet Analysis
The Writer s Diet
Helen Sword, in her book, dispenses with vivid and elaborate explanations accompanied with
succinct analysis. The author provides the reader with an easy to follow set of writing principles.
What is perceive to be the most significant take away ideas are the use active verbs at the
appropriate time, the application of concrete language instead of vague abstractions, and avoiding
long strings of prepositional phrases. Additionally, I value the concepts of employing adjectives
and adverbs only when they are applicable in contributing something new to the meaning of a
sentence. Another important idea presented by Sword is that of reducing one s dependence on
what she refers to as waste words : it, this, that, and there (Sword, ... Show more content on

Too many books on writing well are far too long and far too detailed. However, this is not with
the case of Sword since she makes the point that writing can be fat only when the writer employs
certain often unnecessary words that she refers to as waste words . According to her, writing can
also be fat when the writer uses overabundance of prepositions, unnecessary adjectives, and poor
choice of adverbs. I also like the manner in which Swords points out that some writers ignore all
these rules at times and write masterpieces. Sword moves on to present Shakespeare and Jane
Austin, just to name two, as perfect examples of such

John Knowles A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace Final Paper The setting of A Separate Peace by John Knowles plays a large
role in the plot of the story. The most important parts of the novel take place at the Devon
School. Another thing that makes Devon so important is that it s where the main characters
live. As I mentioned before, Devon is where most of the important parts of the novel take place
and it s where the main characters live, that is why Devon is so significant. The time period was
also very important; the novel takes place during World War II and Devon is a school where
boys are trained to be soldiers. The war is used as a symbol; it represents depression, anger, and
the end of childhood. The Devon School can change based on the season. During the summer
session, Devon is a peaceful place and shows the innocence of childhood and friendship. When the
winter session arrives the peaceful atmosphere disappears and the school becomes gloomy, tense,
and a more hostile place as the boys grow up.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Life Is A Jaw-Dropping Moment
I have never had a literal, involuntary jaw dropping moment. Nothing in my life has ever been
that devastating or overwhelming where I felt like my body didn t belong to me anymore.
Where my only response was a gaping mouth, tears escaping my eyes to drip down my cheeks,
shaking with every breath. Not until I saw footage in the museum of the South Tower come
crashing down. On repeat. The weight of this tragedy had never felt so heavy and unbearable
than in that moment. 2,997. A number I could count to in about an hour. Unlike a million,
billion and trillion it seemed relatively easy to fathom and grasp. It wasn t until I heard the
voices of those who had first hand witnessed the collapse of the South Tower that, that number
became infinite. Each tragic passing meant an immeasurable network of family, friends,
colleagues and neighbors who would feel the constant, painful void of losing a loved one. My
mind then went to think, what if it were my mom or dad or sister or best friend or close
colleague or next door neighbor in that building. I felt extreme urgency to call my family to
remind them how much I loved them and needed them in my life. I then thought about all of the
people who couldn t say I love you one last time. Who couldn t hug their mom and snuggle with
their dog and kiss their spouse and laugh with their friends. Life is immense. It was the first time
in my life where I couldn t fathom how important each life is. I couldn t wrap my head around all

Essay On Book Banning
Book banning first became prevalent in America in the early to mid nineteenth century. It was a
way to stop content that had been labeled sensitive or harmful from reaching its intended audience.
The first noted public challenge was Charles Darwin s On the Origin of the Species which included
a description of his theory that humans and other creatures could have evolved without the guiding
hand of a divine power, threatening many religious beliefs at that time. This led to the bookbeing
banned in several states, including Connecticut and Tennessee. Over the next few decades,
many books would be challenged and banned; there would be protests and several court cases
that make it to a national level. Today, very few books are actually banned, however a great
many are challenged for their content that adults find too explicit or sensitive for their children.
This past week was Banned Books Week, a time where many Americans come together to read
and discuss the topic of banned books, why they were banned, and if it was really necessary.
Banning books only started because adults wanted to keep young, impressionable minds away
from opinions that did not match theirs. On the Origin of the Species was only banned because
it questioned the possibility of a God in a mostly Catholic society. To Kill A Mockingbird was
originally banned because it addressed racial problems in a society that was fighting for equality
for all races. Literature like these works have come to the people in

Olaf s Transformation
There are many stories of Olaf told by the people from his village. There is a story about Olaf
defeating a dragon in face to face combat to protect his village or him racing down a mountain of
lava. But this is the story of how Olaf got his shield. Long time ago, Olaf was a simple shepherd,
living in the mountains above his village. He was very well known for being the kindest man
anyone had ever met. He always had a smile on his face. Tales about him say he could chop down
trees with his bare hands, and that strength was useful while helping others. Every time someone

troll roared from deep within the vault. He had a giant club, about the size of a tree. The troll
charged like a frantic bull. Olaf wasn t worried, he stood his ground and put the little boy behind.
The troll bashed Olaf with his club, but Olaf did not shift from his position. The troll was big
and strong, but he was no match for Olaf s might. Olaf grabbed the club with one hand, and
crushed it with the sheer force of his palm. He picked up the troll and spun him around like a
helicopter, before hurling him deep into the mountain. The troll was defeated, and the boy was
rescued. But then suddenly the ground began to rumble and shake once again, had the troll
returned? No, the vault, it was crumbling apart! As Olaf cut his way through the mountain, he had
weakened the structure, and now it was caving in. The ceiling began to decay, Olaf covered the
boy with his back. With no obvious way out, Olaf grabbed the ice covered door, and held it up like
a shield. Protecting them as the mountain top collapsed around

Popular Mechanics Redmond Carver Analysis
Redmond Carver s Popular Mechanics revolves around many enigmas, the most important of which
is who, out of its two main characters: an unnamed man and an unnamed women, gets the baby.
Likewise, this enigma, as well as others, is specifically designed to draws the reader into the story
and let him/her determine it s ultimate meaning. Similarly, when the readeris first introduced to the
man, who is busy pushing clothes into a suitcase and the women, who is repeatedly yelling at
him that she s glad you re leaving! , he/she is faced with several enigmas. These enigmas, such
as why the man is leaving and why the women is so anxious to see him go, are unanswered by
the stories end and force the reader to come to his/her own conclusions. Likewise, based on the
image of the man packing his belongings and the women telling him she s glad he s leaving,
readers, based on their own experiences and similar situations in other media , might assume that
the two used to be a couple and that there was a breakdown in their relationship (a particularly ugly

determined by the reader. For example, the fact that the man is willing to continue to grasp onto the

Setting In Poltergeist And The Haunting Of Hill House
In most fictional stories, setting seems to be just the background. In school students identify the

that can be enough. The story is focused on just the characters and setting doesn t really matter. In
the cases of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and Poltergeist directed by Tobe

making the setting crucial to the plot. Along with the house being crucial, it was important for
Carol Ann to be taken away in the first instance, otherwise it would be likely the family would

that desperation to stick around despite the paranormal experiences. The tension continues to
increase as the family hires different specialists into their home to save their daughter. It is not
until the end of the movie that it is revealed why the house is really haunted in the first place. It
is revealed that their home was built on a graveyard that had been removed the only catch was
that the tombstones were removed, but the bodies stayed put. This detail is imperative to story as
it gives another aspect to the setting and why the house was haunted. If this were any other house

Gun Control And The Amendment Of The American Constitution
The ever existing debate on whether or not American citizens should keep and exercise their right to

American citizens who believe guns should be regulated, recorded, and controlled overall within
the United Statesof America, to ensure that certain tragedies, such as school shootings and
robberies, do not occur. This paper will argue on the reasoning of why groups are advocating for
gun control because of school shootings and other tragedies associated with firearms. This paper
will also argue that, while American citizens should not have their firearms regulated because it
violates the Second Amendment of the American Constitution, screening for certain medical
problems and mental illnesses, as well as background checks into criminal records, should be
conducted as a requirement to make a legal purchase. While the citizens of the United States of
America should be allowed to own and make use of their firearms, in the case of protecting
themselves against harm, there should be a better system in place to ensure that a person does
not have a mental illness that could endanger another person if they have access to firearms. This
is also the same in the case of a person having a criminal record, such as having a prior conviction

The Medici Of Great Modern Art
The Medici could be regarded as the very first inveterate collectors of great modern art, with their
complicated emotions involved, such as their guilt, ambition of authority, and sexual lust. In the
end, the Medici did not only collect paintings and sculptures; they had changed the very nature
of art itself. Art had been transformed from serving Christianity to personal collecting purpose.
Francesco I de Medici s Studiolo could be marked as a sign of art as personal preference rather
than being used on other larger perspectives. Following up his father Cosimo de Medici s artistic
projects, Francesco has led them to an ultimate conclusion and a glorious beginning. According to
the name of Studiolo, we could infer that this is a place for collecting and displaying one s rare,
precious curiosities. The Studiolo was commissioned by Francesco I de Medici, who also known
as the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Being different from his ancestors, Francesco was only interested
in searching bizarre and fascinating art pieces for his own eyes. Francesco was obsessed

read between. It is not such a black and white situation and when it comes to properly disciplining
a police officer it can become difficult to do so especially when that officer has either been on the
force a long time so there is an established relationship, or the inappropriate act they committed
happened just once and they claim it will never happen again. These types of things make it much
harder to decide what the right discipline may be for that officer.
As the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief of Police advises me that one of my officers is being
investigated for inappropriate behavior. This police officer is under investigation for watching
pornographic websites on the company computers. When he is confronted with the allegation, the
officer denies this allegation but upon further investigation the computer crimes analyst proves
that it was this officer that was using the computer to access these websites. When confronted
with this information, the officer then admits to the wrongdoing but claims he will never do it
again. This officer has only been in trouble once before over ten years ago for a traffic violation
and is otherwise a good officer. As the Chief of Police it is now my decision to choose whether
this officer should be terminated of his duties or if he should face severe disciplinary actions.
It is a difficult decision to make as disciplinary actions are

incentives to sell cars. In addition, Chrysler had been on brink of bankruptcy some times before;
and it was already on the side of maturity stage with declining growth.
The simple motive of the merger was to take advantages of each other s distribution networks
global supplier base, thereby saving costs thanks to high volumes. Daimler Benz could gain access
to Chrysler s distribution networks in North America, while Chrysler could reach out to Europe
market thanks to Daimler Benz s networks. Goldman Sachs was just brought in to make the deal
happen.
In addition, equal status of both parties in the merger, as Schrempp said, did not exist, and the
promise that one day, the American would hold the highest management position in Daimler was...

Moreover, Daimler Benz s and Chrysler s brand images were completely opposite, which makes
them lose their own intrinsic value if they would merge together. Again, the clash in cultures and
values took them apart and a harmony within the new company seemed to be impossible.
In addition, with the purpose of protecting sales of Daimler s luxury and uncompromising
quality products like Mercedes, some core vehicles of Chrysler, such as Dodge Neon and the
Jeep Grand Cherokee, were sidelined in favor of Daimler s products. Apparently, Chrysler s
products are always within cost control, while Daimler Benz s vehicles are less cost effective.
Merging with Daimler Benz, Chrysler hadn t earned as many benefits as expected, but already
faced a severe internal competition which harmed it business not only in the US market, but also
hindered Chrysler s plan of expansion in Europe.
Practically, from Chrysler s point of view, instead of benefiting from synergy savings and instead
of promoting its brand in new market, the merger with Daimler Benz actually put Chrysler into a
bigger chaos and

The As A Form Of Influence On European Art
In nineteenth century Europe, exoticism grew in popularity as a form of influence on European art.
Renown art historian Enrico Crispolti defines exoticism as the imitation of elements in alien
cultures that differ from native traditions. Exoticism carries its own spectrum of interpretation, in
that certain works of art can fall under or between two main categories: pure exoticism and
transcultural composing. Through the use of non Western elements in Western music
, exoticism
seeks to evoke a group perceived as different, often by othering said group. Ralph P. Locke,
former professor of musicology at Eastman School of Music, views pure exoticism as a form of
exoticism with the purpose of representing an exotic subject as different from what is considered
acceptable or appropriate. Transcultural composing focuses on a hybrid of Western and non
Western styles, and is intended to pay a tribute to the music. There is no clear cut definition of
musical exoticism, but rather a window open to varied interpretations and opinions. Renowned for
his operas, English composer Benjamin Brittenwrote Death in Venice which uses non Western
elements to represent something as other within the character of the protagonist, Aschenbach. On
the spectrum of exoticism, Britten s Death in Venice falls under the category of transcultural
composing due to Britten s respectful use and understanding of gamelanstyle music. Claude
Debussy, one of the most influential French composers of the

Comparing Greek And Japanese Creation Myths
A long, long time ago in the earth, what happened to the earth? How did the human being be born?
Thanks to a lot of scientists, the precise fact about the earth are beginning to be unveiled year by
year. We easily assume that it is hard to reach the scientific fact for ancient people because of
behind in technology. Instead, people in old times used to create interesting myths that have been
handed down from generation to generation. There are many myths from country to country in the
world. There are even some for individual cultures and religions. The Greek creation myth and
Japanese one have a similarity although there are differences between them.
According to the Japanese creation myth, before the earth began, the world was filled with one
germ of life. The heavier part of it sank and lighter part of it rose. Shoots sprouted from the ocean
it were transformed into a god. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first god was born from the egg, one half of the shell became the sky, named Uranus, and the
other shell became the earth, named Gaia. Uranus and Gaia gave birth to a lot of babies. While
both stories are unique, they are on the same page in the beginning; the world was dark as dark. In
the Greek creation myth, there was nothing. There were no humans, gods, sun nor moon except
Nyx. Also, on the Japanese myth, there was a darkness. All the elements were mixed together with
one germ of life. There was only one germ of life that all things were mixed together. Later, one of
the gods became the sun, another god became the moon. In the beginning of the world, there was
no light in both

  • 2. Comparing Sacrifices In The Magi And The Minor Canon Sacrifices can come in many different forms; whether it be an object, time, a way of living, or even a life. These sacrifices are usually made out of love. Della s sacrifice was giving up her appearance and the way people would think of her for her husband. The Minor Canon made his sacrifice of leaving a town for the townspeople he cared about. Both of these sacrifices were not for personal gain, but to improve the lives of those around them. Sacrifices are a prominent part of both The Gift of The Magi and The Griffin and The Minor Canon. In The Gift of The Magi, Della gave up her hair for her husband, which may seem like an odd sacrifice for an odd reason without further explanation. Della had beautiful hair, but not a lot of money, so she sold her hair for enough money to buy a gift for Jim, her husband. In The Griffin and The Minor Canon, the Minor Canon gave up his way of life in the best interest of the town. He gave up his way of life by leaving his house, job, his family that may have lived there, and all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Della thought that She looked wonderfully like a schoolboy . Della already felt bad about how her hair looked and said If Jim doesn t kill me... before he looks at me a second time, he ll say I look like a girl who sings and dances for money. Della was already tearing herself down before her friends and family saw her. The Minor Canon wouldn t have to worry about what his friends and family would think, because he was giving up everything to live alone and draw the griffin away from the town. The Minor Canon would have known that he would die since he only carried enough food to get far away enough from the town that was needed to keep the town ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Vietnam War Ethical Analysis No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon, 1985. Since the Vietnam War, there has been almost fifty years of remembrance, various readings, and the publication of military documents. However, Richard Nixon s quote still has a certain veracity. The United States has fought in many wars, but none have compelled Americans to question our motives like the Vietnam War. While many believe that the United States was fighting against communism, and communism should be wiped off the entire face of this planet, one has to ask himself the question: is it really worth it? However, the Vietnam War was not just botched. From the beginning, American military officials brainwashed their soldiers into carelessly slaughtering millions of Vietnamese for the crime of being communists. If any Vietnamese hesitated for a millisecond on listening to an order, he was shot. If any Vietnamese was in simply in the way, he was shot. Aside from Vietnamese casualties, more 58,000 American soldiers died in this forsaken war. According to BBC News, the amount of ammunition fired per soldier was roughly twenty six times greater in Vietnam than during World War II. Additionally, by the end of the war, the United States had released the equivalent of about 640 Hiroshima sized atomic bombs on Vietnam. This begs the question, what other things happened in this conflict that hundreds of Vietnam War novels have conveniently hidden from the American public? Rape, torture, imprisonment, pillaging and burning of villages, and starvation are just a few. According to Mother Jones, on August 31, 1969, a young Vietnamese girl was kidnapped, held at gunpoint, brutally gang raped, and eventually murdered by United States soldiers. Her full story was told in the book Casualties of War by Daniel Lang, one of the few exceptions to all the patriotic Vietnam War books out there. Even more hidden from public scrutiny were crimes that United States soldiers committed against other United States soldiers. A document from the National Archives tells the story of a man called Curtis, who was viciously raped by three fellow GI s. His story is as follows: Curtis was feeling sick that late summer day and wouldn t drink with his hootch mates, so they pounced on him, held his mouth open, and poured whisky down his throat. With this little bit of information and information from the graph above, I presume that this organism may have fought for the same resources as Group A and Group C. As the amount of fossils of Group B decreases, the amount of fossils of Group A and Group C increased. These two groups must have stopped Group B from becoming successful. The other possibility could have been that something changed in the environment at around 12 million years ago that was terminal to Group B. As group B died other groups rose in population. Having the courage to be an honorable and honest person is an amazing quality to have. You may ask why is it so hard to be honest, well I feel it takes courage and honorability to stand alone and fight for what is right. Believing and fighting for what is right for me is very courageous and for many people that is very frightening and they sometimes prefer to stay quiet and not do anything. In the poem, Beowulf, he was a brave warrior, a hero to the people. His honorability was so great he had faith and believed in God. Beowulf saved the people from the monstrous Grendel when he was terrorizing the town. I think honor is one of the characteristics that Beowulf has. An honorable person is one who is deserving of respect. (Lynne Bratcher)It is very hard to be honorable and honest in a world of competition, where most everyone lies and betrays each other. It takes a very strong person, not physically but mentally and emotionally as well to be honest and honorable. Having faith and wanting to do good by God are what makes us do the right things. Speaking the truth when everyone else disagrees, it can sometimes be very frightening and hard for us to do because of the fear of being rejected by others. Being loyal and helping others without accepting nothing back in return makes us honorable. Beowulf was a brave and courageous warrior, defeating three terrifying monsters with his bare hands.Walking into the layer of the monster had to be very terrifying but, Beowulf courageously went into it and behead Grendel s mother. (Heaney)Fearless and daring can guide you to be courageous and to move in a dangerous situation. What makes a person so brave and courageous? Was is because he was big and extremely strong? Being courageous does not mean you have to be strong, but having heart. Moving in the face of danger. (Martha Pasternak)Having passion about what is being done, even if it means it would be dangerous and even fatal. There are many brave and courageous people out there in today s society. These cultural characteristics can be seen as a blend of beliefs that tie the people to the land around them. This is very evident when looking at the creation stories of ingenious people. Each culture has different characteristics. For example the indigenous creation stories called The Earthon Turtle s Back , When Grizzlies Walked Upright , and the Navajo origin legend; all have characteristics of the Native American culture. Such as the Native American cultural characteristics that you should respect animals, nature, and elders. Those cultural characteristics are very evident throughout the first two stories. The third creation story has different cultural characteristics. The story The Earth on The Turtle s back has many cultural characteristics throughout the story. They are there, but they are hidden within story throughout the text. For example in the text the chief tells his wife that her dreams have power. After that the chief digs up the tree, and for the Onondaga, they believe that powerful dreams should come true. Another example of cultural characteristics throughout the text is the ... • 24. Surveillance And Surveillance Throughout The Book,... Surveillance is a continuous close observation of a person. Surveillance plays a key part in the book, Villette by Charlotte Bronte. In Villette, Bronte is focusing on a specific character, Lucy Snowe. Throughout the book Lucy is telling us about her life story while surveillance appears throughout. The focus of this paper is on how surveillance changes over the course of Lucy s life. • 25. Jeremy Bentham And Utilitarianism Jeremy Bentham was an English philosophy (1748 1632) who challenged the idea of the Social Contract theory, which states that the people create a social contract to agree to form of government. Bentham opposed the idea of natural rights and followed the idea of utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the idea that political and moral decision should not be based on natural rights, but based on which choice produces the greatest good for the greatest number . For an example, this principle explains whether a student should start a food fight or not. The food fight could cause injuries (i.e someone slipping on food), property damage, and extra work for the people who must clean it up. Starting the food fight may produce good for some people, but... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only way to fix this would be through a classless society. In this society, there would be no churches, and no one would have to pay for their personal properties. Money would basically be none existent, as people will contribute to the things they want. In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx writes Communism deprives no man of the power to appropriate the products of society: all that it does is to deprive home of the power to subjugate the labor of others by means of such appropriation (Caste 265). Under this classless society communism , everyone would be on equal grounds with no more classes. Everyone would also be given the necessities they need to live, such as a home. By doing this, Marx thought it would eliminate capitalism, which would eliminate the greediness of people. Comparison As stated earlier, utilitarianism is the idea that political and moral decisions should be not be based on the pursuit of natural rights (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness), but based on the decision of which choice would produce the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. In other words, one should not be selfish when it comes to making decisions. That is what utilitarianism and Marx s classless society has in common. Marx s classless society is also trying to eliminate the greediness of society, which is a form of selfishness. Both philosophies are ultimately trying to better society in their own way, but both are trying to eliminate the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author provides the reader with an easy to follow set of writing principles. What is perceive to be the most significant take away ideas are the use active verbs at the appropriate time, the application of concrete language instead of vague abstractions, and avoiding long strings of prepositional phrases. Additionally, I value the concepts of employing adjectives and adverbs only when they are applicable in contributing something new to the meaning of a sentence. The most important parts of the novel take place at the Devon School. Another thing that makes Devon so important is that it s where the main characters live. As I mentioned before, Devon is where most of the important parts of the novel take place and it s where the main characters live, that is why Devon is so significant. The time period was also very important; the novel takes place during World War II and Devon is a school where boys are trained to be soldiers. The war is used as a symbol; it represents depression, anger, and the end of childhood. The Devon School can change based on the season. During the summer session, Devon is a peaceful place and shows the innocence of childhood and friendship. When the winter session arrives the peaceful atmosphere disappears and the school becomes gloomy, tense, and a more hostile place as the boys grow up.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nothing in my life has ever been that devastating or overwhelming where I felt like my body didn t belong to me anymore. • 31. Essay On Book Banning Book banning first became prevalent in America in the early to mid nineteenth century. It was a way to stop content that had been labeled sensitive or harmful from reaching its intended audience. The first noted public challenge was Charles Darwin s On the Origin of the Species which included a description of his theory that humans and other creatures could have evolved without the guiding hand of a divine power, threatening many religious beliefs at that time. This led to the bookbeing banned in several states, including Connecticut and Tennessee. Over the next few decades, many books would be challenged and banned; there would be protests and several court cases that make it to a national level. Today, very few books are actually banned, however a great many are challenged for their content that adults find too explicit or sensitive for their children. This past week was Banned Books Week, a time where many Americans come together to read and discuss the topic of banned books, why they were banned, and if it was really necessary. Banning books only started because adults wanted to keep young, impressionable minds away from opinions that did not match theirs. On the Origin of the Species was only banned because it questioned the possibility of a God in a mostly Catholic society. To Kill A Mockingbird was originally banned because it addressed racial problems in a society that was fighting for equality for all races. Literature like these works have come to the people in ... Renown art historian Enrico Crispolti defines exoticism as the imitation of elements in alien cultures that differ from native traditions. Exoticism carries its own spectrum of interpretation, in that certain works of art can fall under or between two main categories: pure exoticism and transcultural composing. Through the use of non Western elements in Western music , exoticism seeks to evoke a group perceived as different, often by othering said group. Ralph P. Locke, former professor of musicology at Eastman School of Music, views pure exoticism as a form of exoticism with the purpose of representing an exotic subject as different from what is considered acceptable or appropriate. Transcultural composing focuses on a hybrid of Western and non Western styles, and is intended to pay a tribute to the music. There is no clear cut definition of musical exoticism, but rather a window open to varied interpretations and opinions. Renowned for his operas, English composer Benjamin Brittenwrote Death in Venice which uses non Western elements to represent something as other within the character of the protagonist, Aschenbach.
