Hormones are chemical substances that regulate body activities so that
homeostasis or equilibrium is maintained. Hormones are generally produced and
released by the glands directly to the blood which then circulates the hormones
throughout the body. They are sometimes called the chemical messengers of the
body. They can be detected in the blood and bodily excretions such as urine and
saliva through laboratory tests.
There are different hormones which control different processes in the
body such as growth, development, metabolism, and mood. There are also
hormones produced by reproductive organs for the reproductive functions of
the body. These are:
❖Estrogen. Produced by the ovaries, this controls the development of
female secondary characteristics and stimulates the growth of the lining
of the uterus.
❖Progesterone. Produced by the ovaries, this prepares the uterus for
implantation of an embryo.
❖Testosterone. Produced by the testes, this controls the development of
male secondary characteristics and sperm formation.
The names of hormones also tell us their chemical composition and
structure which are now known thanks to medical and biochemical research.
Medical doctors who specialize in the treatment of hormonal disorders are
called endocrinologists because most hormones are produced by the endocrine
glands.
