European Imperialism In British India
The works of Thomas Metcalf, T.W. Roberts, Daniel Headrick, and other notable historians explore
the development of the European imperial project through the use of architecture, technology, and
medicine. These technologies become the machines and driving force of imperialism and are used
to retain control over colonial regions. Headrick argues that these sciences provide the means to the
motives behind the imperialist powers who are working to keep their territorial subjects subdued to
their will. Without the means of technology, the motive can never be achieved, and the constructed
empires are inevitably doomed to failure. Along with the means of technology, the invention, use,
and implantation of these technologies also reflect the broader political and social trends of the
empires. Architecture, technology, and medicine showcase the changes in imperial policies,
ideologies and overarching view of the empireitself. (Present or Past Tense)
Metcalf s analysis of architecture in British India shows how a combination of cultures becomes
essential in designing an empire that reflected both the colonizer and the subjects. After the Sepoy
Mutiny of 1857, British officials realized that a serious reassessment of Indian culture was
necessary for Britain to remain the colonial power. Metcalf explores the construction of the Mayo
College and the architectural debates that came with building it. The formation and science behind
the architecture are essential to empire building

Computers Are A Necessary Part Of Our Lives Day Essay
Computers are indeed a necessary part of our lives day in and out. Some of us need to face them
all day, others spend only a few hours or less. Nevertheless it is undeniable all of us get to a
certain point in time where our eyes feel the strain of using it. How can we avoid computer
eyestrain? Here are a few pointers to help our eyes stay healthy. Break up the time we spend on the
computer. For those that need to spend hours at a time on the computer, the degree of eyestrain
often correlates with the length of usage of the computer. Taking a very short break after 30
minutes e.g. even if only for 1 minute will help to reduce the fatigue. Use eye lubricants when
necessary. When using the computer, most of us stare at the screens because we are
concentrating on something, This reduces the blink rate and results in dry eyes. For some, just
resting the eyes by closing it for a short period helps to get our eyes sufficiently moist again,
however some people s eyes are so dry that they need regular lubricants to alleviate the
symptoms. Use eye lubricants that are recommended by your doctor. Do not get into the habit of
using steroidal based eyes or eyedrops that cause vessel constriction (giving the false security of
having white eyes) as these can cause future unwanted side effects such as glaucoma. When using
lubricants, those with severe dry eyes should use it on a regular basis rather than waiting for their
eyes to feel pain or discomfort first. Relax

Biological Determinism Summary
In his introduction, Gould enlightens us on the views of Socrates. All people should be educated
and belong to one of three classes within society; rulers, auxiliaries and craftsmen. Socrates
believes firmly that if this organization is upheld then society will be stable. It was said by
Glaucon, that Socratesprophecies may be disseminated through the generations. This was in fact
the case due to his claims being advanced by the science of the times (Gould, 1996). This book
according to this introduction looks to discuss this science of biological determinism. Biological
determinism is an idea that sees all human behavior as innate. It postulates that we function as a
matter of our genetics, brain size and biology and not society or culture.

Drug Discovery And Development Of New Medicine
Describe and discuss recent developments in drug discovery. As our society is evolving so is
diseases many drugs that were previously effective to cure certain diseases are simply not as
effective any more or on the other hand there isn t sufficient medicine to battle the current new
health problems that are arising with our evolving society for example obesity and a range of
cardiovascular diseases. In addition many of the medicine available today either only treats the
symptom or cures the disease with the addition of unwanted side effects. Hence, this is why drug
discovery and development is vital. It is through drug discovery and development that new
medicine is found.
Currently a lot of effort is going into Binuclear metallohydrolases as a target in drug development.
This is due to the fact this enzyme group has the potential to find solutions to health problems such
as erectile dysfunctions, osteoporosis, cardiovascular dieses and also even become the seed in
possible eradication of some antibiotic resistance.
The main enzymes in the binuclear metallohydrolases group that are most vital us are purple acid
phosphatases, metallo ОІ lactamases and arginases. The homologous feature in all these enzymes is
the existence of two very nearly touching metal ions that hold the ability to attract water molecules
that will then act as a nucleophile in a very particular hydrolytic reaction the importance of this is
that it means that binuclear acids will have a powerful ionic

Single Gene Disorder
When a certain gene is known to cause a disease, it is referred as a single gene disorder or a
Mendelian disorder. These disorders involve mutations in the DNA sequences of single genes.
As a result, the protein the gene codes for is either altered or missing (Landsverk, 2013). Few
examples of single gene disorders includes cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, Fragile X
syndrome, muscular dystrophy, or Huntington disease. As a rule, single gene disorders are not
very common. For example, only one in 2,500 people are born with cystic fibrosis. There are a
number of inheritance patterns of single gene disorders that are predictable when you know what
they are. There are three main transmission patterns: autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and
X linked or sex linked recessive (Mahdieh, 2013).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
LSDs result from incompletely digested macromolecules due to loss of enzyme function
(Filocamo, 2013). These enzymes normally break down items for reuse in the cells. If the
enzymes are missing or don t work properly, then the items can build up and become toxic. This
happens in an area of the cell called lysosomes. To date, 51 genetically determined lysosomal
storage diseases have been described. Since there can be different mutations of the same gene, they
result in different clinical manifestations and are classified as infantile and adult types. The
acquired disorders are the result of inhibition of О± mannosidase II by ingestion of plant materials
of Astragalus lentginous, Oxiftropis serica, Swainsona canescens, and Ipomoea carena as well as
treatment with certain drugs, such as amphophilic cationic drugs, amiodarone and chloroquine,
which induce phospholipidosis and MPS. There are 9 different inherited and 2 acquired
mechanisms that are known to cause lysosomal storage

Nitrate Nitrite
However, nitrate reductase can further reduce nitrite to ammonia or molecular nitrogen, which does
not react with the reagents and does not produce a colour change. To verify nitrate has been reduced
past nitrite, zinc powder is added to the medium. If the medium does not change colour after the
addition of zinc powder, then the nitrates in the medium have been reduced further. If the bacterium
does not use nitrate, then the addition of zinc powder will reduce the nitrates in the medium to
nitrite, changing the medium to a pink or red colour.
I inoculated my bacteria into a tube containing nitrate broth, and waited until the next class day to

Disillusionment In The Vietnam War
Thomas the Apostle once said that seeing is believing, and rightfully so. A person consciously
chooses to stand firm in his beliefs until given cold, hard evidence that proves a different reality
and opens his eyes. Coming to understand these new facts is a vital part of life that man must face
in order to better understand the natural world. However, new knowledge can become a double
edged sword when it attributes to man s disillusionment. An individual s mindset falls into the
depths of despair when introduced to a harsh reality that clashes with his previous perceptions of
right and wrong. Unfortunately, the entirety of America faced such a reality during the Vietnam
War. According to Spector, a large number of journalists found themselves

However, American citizens no longer saw war with such optimism after witnessing the
pessimistic reports that the news chose to televise. In one report, a journalist from CBS Evening
News followed American troops as they pillaged and burnt down a village. The news televised
graphic images of the burning homes, and the journalist on the scene solemnly listed the peaceful
Vietnamese that died in the process. Soon afterward, Americans became outraged (CBSN). At this
point, America could no longer view war as something glorious. The United States not only
witnessed as their troops cause death but also as their troops met their own ends. According to
Spector, the media s tendency to report about negative events such as death undermined American
support for the Vietnam War. As casualties increased, support decreased (Spector). It is also
important to note that casualties would logically increase as the amount of time the war went on
increasing. Since the news reported events unfolding in the war each day, a person would hear
about death every day. These daily death reports would not only be extremely depressing, but they
would also have a compound effect as time continued. The media s reports on death and destruction
changed turned America s perception of war into one that was bleak and hopeless. Many Americans

Constructivist Teachers And Teaching Philosophy
Teachers who have a constructivist basis for their philosophy of teaching and learning are seldom
satisfied to use textbooks alone. Constructivists know that students must have motivation to search
for meaning and create their own understanding of the world of ideas. When students want to know
more about an idea, a topic, or an entire discipline, they put more cognitive energy into classroom
investigations and discussions and study more on their own. There are five identified central tenets
of constructivism as a teaching philosophy: Constructivist teachers seek and value students points
of view. This concept is similar to the reflective action process we call withitness, in which teachers
attempt to perceive students needs and respond to them appropriately; Constructivist teachers
challenge students to see different points of view and thereby construct new knowledge. Learning
occurs when teachers ask students what they think they know about a subject and why they think
they know it; Constructivist teachers recognize that curricula must have meaning for students.
When students see the relevance of curricula, their interest in learning grows; Constructivist
teachers create lessons that tackle big ideas, not small bits of information. By seeing the whole first,
students are able to determine how the parts fit together; Constructivist teachers assess student
learning in daily classroom activities, not through the use of separate testing or evaluation events.

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Volta
INTRODUCTION Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Volta is known as the scientist that founded the
electric age. He was an Italian physicist pioneer that contributed greatly to the development of the
battery. Alessandro Volta was born in Como, Italy in 1745. He attended a public school; in 1774
he was appointed professor of physics at the Royal School in Como. His first invention was an
electrophorus; a device that produced static electricity. In 1776 77 he devoted his time to chemistry,
studying atmospheric electricity, and devising experiments such as the ignition of gases by an
electric spark in a closed vessel. In 1779 he became professor of physics at the University of Pavia,
a chair he occupied for 25 years. By the 1800 he had developed... Show more content on

Not long after the invention of the voltaic pile, electrical developments boomed. With the key that

in French: le Prix Volta was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1801 1802 to honor Alessandro
Volta, an Italian physicist noted for developing the battery. At that time Alessandro Volta was
summoned to Paris to demonstrate his great discovery before the French Academy of Sciences. A
museum in Como, the Voltian Temple, has been built in honor of Volta and contains some of the
original instruments he used to conduct experiments. Near Lake Como stands the Villa Olmo,
which houses the Voltian Foundation, an organization which promotes scientific activities. The
Emperor of Austria honored him naming him a professor of Philosophy at Padova. Also an
electric unit Volt was named after Alessandro. And even now the French government awards the
Volta Prize for scientific achievement in electricity. Also a portage of Alessandro Volta, appeared

Critical Information About A Patient s Plan Of Care
Specific problem requiring change and Situation description: The shift report between the off going
and oncoming nurses must include all of the critical information about a patient s plan of care. This
information must be communicated. The change of shift report that is done incorrectly can be a
result of missed information and poor communication between nurses, affecting their ability to
deliver safe and efficient care for the patients. This problem occurs not just at one but at most
hospitals, where inter shift report still continues to take place at the nursing station without
inclusion or a visual of the patient until the report is done. As I witnessed shift report in the
hallways or at the nursing stations of SCVMC of the 33 bed mother and baby unit, I noticed that at
times unnecessary information is received and critical information may not be communicated. On
the other hand, at Redwood City Kaiser neuroscience unit bedside inter shift nursing report works
well and I have witnessed better nurse patient relationship, lower incidents of falls, strong
teamwork, as well as improved nurse accountability and prioritization at the beginning of the shift.
As evidence shows in the article Improving Client and Nurse Satisfaction Through the Utilization
of Bedside Report , there is a direct correlation between the bedside report and both client and nurse
satisfaction in care settings, validating the importance of changing to bedside report (Vines, Dupler,
Guido, 2014). I

The Epistle To The Philippian
Paul is attributed with writing the Epistle to the Philippians, and no serious doubt is raised
against the claim otherwise. It was during Paul s second missionary journey, he and his
companions set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to
Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a
Roman colony (Acts 12:11 12). They remained in the city, where they met a small group of Jews
attending a prayer meeting by the river. Paul was able to preach to them, and Lydia and her
household was baptized. However, the writing of the Epistle to the Philippians was not a joyous
occasion for Paul because he was in prison in Rome. The church of Philippi sent Epaphroditus to

encourage the church, but he rebuked them for their disunity and contentiousness. His letter
provided a sharp disagreement against the possibility of the Gospel being hindered because of the
discord within the church. Paul wanted them to understand and imitate the same humility
demonstrated by Christ (Acts 2). He admonishes the church to be of the same mind, having the
same love, a being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but
in humility regard others as better than yourselves (Acts 2:2 3). He further shows the faithfulness
and humility of two of his companions, Timothy and Epaphroditus as examples of individuals in
harmony with the fulfillment of the work of Christ. According to D.A Carson and Douglas Moo, it
is possible that Paul further wrote to the church to thank them for their gift, to commend Timothy to
them, and to prepare for his possible future

The Problem With Communication Is The Illusion That It Has...
Hey guys! :)
So I missed Monday Mantra but I thought to make up for that, I would go ahead and post a
Tuesday Truth which leads me into today s post Five Ways To Communicate Effectively .
Since starting my new job, I have taken on a lot of new things. I am learning everyday and I love
that but no matter how much we love to learn, or how much we think we already know, the one
thing that will continue to be a work in progress throughout our lives is communicating effectively.
As Mr. Shaw quotes, The problem with communication, is the illusion that it has been
accomplished. This is especially true in the workplace. For many of us, our job demands that we
multi task so right there, communication is weakened and it s easy to have misunderstandings that
most of the time could have been avoided if we had just done one tiny thing
Listen.
Some us will admit we re not the best listeners and others will claim to be great listeners when in
reality, they only listen with the purpose of responding and fail to absorb what is actually being said.
Guilty as charged.
As I mentioned earlier, big learning curve at work right now and in certain situations my
primary language, English, falls short because English is not a first language for everyone I
work with so training takes on a whole different meaning but in the best way possible. It has
forced me to slow down, to be more mindful of tone and expression and really focus on what is and
isn t being said.

foreign jobs. They work hand and hand with the suppliers on the design, production and testing

also came across that Best Buy also participates in a U.S. and China joint Customs and Border

Terrorism (C TPAT) in which I found very intriguing since you never hear of companies doing
this or at least I have not, since I am military and while finding this out they will now have more
support from me. I would say Best Buy is an organization that takes its social and ethic
responsibilities serious and has surpassed my expectations. BestBuy learned early in the on in the
beginning to engage in some sort of social responsibilities if they want to have a chance to survive.
So you can say a responsible business is defined by actively deciding to better the conditions of the

The Great Man Theory Of Leadership
The Great Man Theory of leadership dates back to the early 1900s where it was strongly believed
that great leaders are born, not made. The basic premise of this theory has been contested since the
inception of leadership study. While recent studies show some evidence to the contrary, the
fundamental principle of the theory does retain some validity. The historian Thomas Carlyle
coined the Great Man Theory as he argues the world s history is simply a collection of biographies
belonging to great men (U, 2016). Although referred to as the Great Man Theory, the foundation of
the theory is gender neutral. It has more recently been termed the Great Man/Great Woman Theory
of leadership, removing the gender associated bias. The lack of... Show more content on

Executives, military leaders and senior government officials often possess a similar charisma
that empowers them to lead effectively. Although they have all likely attended a slew of
leadership seminars and workshops, there remains a certain x factor they all possess. To gain a
worldwide perspective on the question born or made, the Center for Creative Leadership posed
the question to executives spanning 53 countries. The results indicated a consensus to the
contrary of the Great Man Theory. More than half, 53.4% of respondents believe that leaders are
made, referred to as Mades while only 19.1% believe that they are born, Borns . Interestingly,
about a quarter of the executives surveyed, 28.5%, think leaders are both born and made.
(Mascone, 2013) Analyzing further, a combined 47.6% think there is some validity to being born a
leader. Thus, it proves difficult to arrive at a conclusion with empirical data in support of either
theory.
The survey expanded on various leadership topics in an effort to determine what Borns and Mades
believe are important characteristics of leaders. Both Borns and Mades believe that leaders should
be humane, charismatic, participative and team oriented. Borns are more likely to believe that
following protocol and behaving in traditional ways in accordance with the status and position of a
leader will make them more effective.

The Problem Of California Drought
California Drought
It wasn t so long ago America experienced one of its biggest natural disasters. From this event
many lost their homes, vegetation, and brought the great depression to an even worse position.
The worst American drought was known as the dust bowl in the 1930 s, many citizens didn t see
it coming because they didn t see the signs and for that same reason many suffered. Today
California is receiving the same signs that it s coming to a drought, but the citizens don t seem to
take it seriously to what the outcome could come too. The people from California need to
understand that there has to be something done to preserve more water. Discipline is key to
preserve more water, it can all start at home by also being responsible managing how much water
you should be using. Cities as well should put in action by investing more money to give our
community the best up to date irrigation system, and or have a larger amount of city workers
around the clock inspect all the areas to see no wasting is occurring. As I said discipline is the
key word for every citizen in California to understand if they would like to keep California out of
a drought. Many people waste water in a daily basis where if one person may not seem like a lot,
but multiply it with about more than 39,145,000 people that live in California doing the same
thing, it tends to add up drastically. Anything is a waste of water from leaving the sink running

Media In Politics Analysis
The media s role in politics should be to tell the people the facts about the candidates. They
should also tell us about candidates views, policies, rankings in the polls, and not give their own
opinion of the candidates. The media set the agenda on Democratic presidential nominee Bernie
Sanders as being a Socialist and not a real Democrat. Some media sources have believe this could
hinder Sanders since he is running as a Democrat, and some sources claim he has just as much
potential as Hillary Clinton. The following data was collected from new articles released between

with a parliamentary republic government. In addition, Poland has also been a member of the
European Parliament since 2004 in which it is the sixth largest member state with a population of
over 38.53 million as of 2013. The politics of Polandcan arguably be viewed as complex to an
outsider, such as one from the United Statesof America. Unlike the United States, Poland does not
use a two party system in elections and it also operates under a semi presidential system meaning
the country has both a president and prime minister. Poland operates with a semi presidential

Duda is an independent politician meaning he does not particularly align with any political party.
Contrarily, SzydЕ‚o is a member of the political party known as the Law and Justice party. The
political parties, or lack of, of Polish politics can greatly assist in influencing how Poland is
governed. Poland operates under a multi party system in which various political parties compete
against one another in elections. This system contrasts from the United States in that the United
States operates within a two party system in which elections are between only two major political
parties. Poland currently has 15 political parties that hold seats in either the Sejm, Senate or the
European Parliament. These parties include Law and Justice, Civic Platform, Modern, Polish
People s Party, Union of European Democrats, Union of European Democrats, Democratic Left
Alliance, Solidary Poland, Poland Together, Liberty, Congress of the New Right, Right Wing of the
Republic, National Movement, Real Politics Union, Labour United and National Catholic
Movement. Civic Platform and Law and Justice are the two major political parties of Poland, as
they accumulate the most seats by a plurality in the Sejm, Senate and European Parliament. Due to
their pluralities in these institutions, members of these two parties have a large impact and
influence on decisions in the country of Poland. In addition to

American Policy In Graham Greene s The Quiet American
Through its critical depiction of American policy in the conflict between the Viet Minh and
Southern Vietnam, Graham Greene s The Quiet American suggests that journalist Thomas Fowler
s perspective of foreign non intervention in Vietnamese affairs is justified because Fowler
understands the discomfort and struggles Vietnamese citizens face first hand while his rival,
Alden Pyle, refuses to allow his experiences change his firm beliefs in democracy. Pyle, an
American working with the Economic Aid Mission, is an ardent believer in the virtue and
necessary action of the American foreign policy. Despite formulating his own opinions based on
author York Harding and having no experience in Southern Asia, Pyle was absorbed already in the

As he perceives the individuals and nations only as they conform to his, and York Harding s,

of Democracy , taking away certain rights to maintain order, justifies these harmful political
ramifications to the Vietnamese. Greene allegorically depicts Pyle as America and its ideology
containment is a responsibility Americans have for the rest of the world. As he did not spend any
time amidst the problems and grounds in Vietnam, Pyle is narrow minded and naive because he
fails to comprehend how America s actions are colonialist and to acknowledge that the solution
should come from within Vietnamese civilians own society rather than foreign countries. While
Fowler and Pyle discuss contrasting Western perspectives on foreign intervention in a watchtower

Essay on Why did King Charles I Resort to Personal Rule in...
Why did King Charles I Resort to Personal Rule in 1629? The Personal Rule came about when
King Charles I dissolved parliament in 1629. It was symbolic of a time when the King felt that
any joint governing of the country was impossible. Right from the start of Charles reign,
relations had been poor with Parliament. But the time leading up to the start of the Personal
Rule, or the Eleven Year Tyranny as it is sometimes referred, marked a low point. So for what
reasons did Charles embark on the Personal Rule, and whose fault was it? These issues will be
discussed in the following paragraphs. The broad overall reason for the collapse of relations
between Parliament and the King is the conflict... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An obvious reason why Parliament could not work with the King was Charles deep emotional
problems. Although this is not the most important reason, it is nevertheless an important one
that cannot be overlooked. Charles was a deeply insecure man. His insecurity had roots in his
childhood, where he was seen as the runt of the litter, and very much outshone by his older
brother Henry. Perhaps his hard line approach of being unwilling to compromise or negotiate
was because he lacked the emotional intelligence and confidence to reason with people
effectively. In reality, this was probably a culmination of his strong belief in the Divine Right of
Kings and his lack of confidence. In his history of the period, the Earl of Clarendon cited a major
reason for Charles personality problems at not trusting himself enough . The King s speeches to
Parliament lacked conviction, largely due to a constant stutter that he had possessed since birth. At
a time when mastery of oral communication was seen as a sign of prestige, this speech
impediment affected him in many ways, and would have contributed to his lack of confidence. He
was also of slight appearance, only five foot four, and therefore lacked the assertiveness to ensure

the consequences Gatsby faced for going after the American Dream. Jay Gatsby was born to a

Dubosson Torbay et al. (2002) identify the principal dimensions user s role, interaction pattern,
nature of the offering, pricing system, level of customization, and economic control for classifying
e business models. Rappa (2001) describes companies by their value proposition and ways of
generating revenue. His classification has nine categories of e business models: brokerage model,
advertising model, infomediary model, merchant model, manufacturer model, affiliate model,
community model, subscription model and utility model. E business models are comprised of a set
of components so we need to choose the appropriate application framework to define the
relationship between them. The growth of e business has raised interest in transforming traditional
business models to exploit opportunities through innovation (Pateli and Giaglis, 2003). The internet
has changed the idea of a business model and this has practical implications for companies.
Consequently, companies need to redefine customer value propositions, and their business model.
Enhancing customer experience helps to reshape customer value propositions (Berman and Bell,

information to manage organizations, and integrating and optimizing digital and physical
components (Berman and Bell, 2011). Effective use of e business models depends on the economic

Juvenile Crime Solution
It may seem shocking that America has one of the highest crime rates per capita compared to other
similar industrialized nations. Over the years, there have been many discussions and efforts in
order to reduce this problem. Perhaps one of the more sensitive issues when discussing crime in
America is the problem of juvenile crime. Recently, juveniles make up 3% of all felonies
committed each year and 6% of all violent crimes (criminamerica.net). These statistics have
troubled politicians for decades as they have worked to find a solution. Starting in 1994 the
Clinton administration started putting stricter punishment on juvenile offenders, but it was
quickly realized that this harsh punishment may not be the best solution. Various studies and
programs put into action have shown that early prevention in a child s life is much more
effective and more cost efficient in reducing crime. Because of these efforts, juvenile crime has
reduced 68% since the violent boom of the 1990s. In light of these discoveries, it is important for
states to focus on these results in order to reduce crime. In the 1990s, as crime was continuing to
rise at a steady rate, American leaders soon realized they had a crisis on their hands. In response to
this, President Bill Clinton released a bill in 1994 aiming to take extreme action in combatting
crime. This bill included many actions such as increasing the amount of police officers, more
funding for cities law enforcement programs, and enforcing

No, the association between the two variables does not imply that one causes the other. No, a

Marital law which finally ended in 1846 was traditionally enforced by the English colonies in the
Caribbean from Christmas through the first or second week of January.(Liverpool:132)These
festivities along with the pomp and ceremony involved in imposing marital law (this included
maneuvers by the militia), provide the slaves with ideas for some of the earliest masquerades for
carnival.
Trinidad s French Creole planter community used this opportunity to celebrate their memories of
their ancestral home. Pre emancipation carnival was highly stratified and segregated affair,
however with the planters and the free coloured keeping to themselves. Slaves were in theory
debarred from the festivities but eye witness evidence suggests that they will have taken advantage
of the temporary anarchy to indulge in the street parades (Regis 2000:231).Because of this
segregation and the debarring of slaves from this celebration the slaves in turn would hold their
own little carnivals in their backyards called the Dame Lorraine masque(Regis 2000:231) by using
their own rituals and folklore but also imitating their masters behaviour at the masked balls.
The pre emancipation carnival saw whites costume themselves as negres de jardin (field Negro
labourers) and mulatresses. This also reenacted the Cannes Brulees (French for burning canes): the
practice of rounding up slaves to put out fires in the cane fields.

metals and 1 kills of soybeans per day and the U.S. can produce 1 kilo of Precious Metals and
500 kilos of soybeans per day. We can easily calculate that the opportunity cost for China to only
produce 1 kilo precious metals is 1/100=0.01 kilo of soybeans. The U.S. s opportunity cost for
only product 1 kilo precious metals is 500/1=500 kilos of soybeans per kilo. Compare with these
two number we can see there is a huge difference between China and the U.S. s cost for
producing precious metals, which is 500/0.01=50000 times. In another word, China have a
much lower cost for them to produce the precious metals than the U.S. Using the same method,
we can know that the cost of producing 1 kilo soybeans in China equal to 100/1=100 kilos of
precious metals. However, in the U.S. it only cost them 1/500=0.002 kilo of precious metals to
produce one kilo of soybeans; it means the U.S. has a much lower cost for them to produce the
soybeans than China. i.According to the analysis provided above, we can know that China has a
much lower cost to produce the precious metals and a super high cost for them to grow soybeans.
It is better for China to focus on produce the precious metals instead of growing soybeans. That is
why China should buy soybeans from the country that have a lower cost to growing them,

Pure Products Of America Essay
Anna Baldwin Dr. Shaheen Literary Analysis The pure products of America What is the
American Dream? In the poem, To Elsie, William Carlos Williams asks us the many questions
lurking beneath the pavement of our perception behind the American dream: what are the pure
products of America and what is the reality of this imagined concept? Through the use of texture
and form, Williams perfectly depicts with cynical aptitude the recycled degradation of society.
In To Elsie, a depraved America is personified through the history and conception of a woman
named Elsie. The poem begins in the muck and destitution of the lower working class. When a
woman is raped, a child named Elsie is born out of wedlock and that child grows to become a
housemaid of a rich doctor s family. Almost in cycle, she becomes the subject of prying eyes and
perverse fantasies of rich men. Elsie is thus a symbol of America used and corrupted by the
debauched society we live in. From the very beginning, the poem s diction is designed as a
method of psychology to detach the mind of the reader from the picture portrayed. In the
introductory line, The pure products of America... go crazy (l.1, l.2), the mind of the reader is
manipulated by use of the words pure products. There is an emphasis of stressed R s consonants,
especially in the words products and crazy , giving essentially a very raw and industrial grinding
roll of the tongue. When one thinks of the word product, they are

of income generated by economic development. Gunter and van der Hoeven points out that: The

production, traditionally identified as labour and capital (2004, p. 20). Stiglitz (2003, as cited in

Maglev Train Essay
Maglev train states the train is lifted above its tracts by electromagnetic force when operating.
According to the study of Liu, Long and Li(2015), the general advantages of this brand new
technology over the conventional one, namely, the wheeled train, can be concluded into the
following three items. First, due to the absence of the friction, it can run more smoothly and
quietly. Secondly, there are less wear and tear happening during the operation, hence less
maintenance and on going cost is needed. Lastly, it can attain a rather high speed. This essay will
examine the key technologies of the maglev train from both the dominanted systems and the main
characteristics of high speed and low speed maglev trains perspectives.
There are three main systems lying in the train: suspension system, guidance and brake system and
traction system. Traction system and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The findings of Lu et al (2013) study suggest that it consists of primary coils, secondary coils and
levitation magnet. As Lu et al (2013) state, the train is driven by the interaction between traveling
magnetic field and the eddy currents, as well as thrust force. This can be demonstrated by the
electricity magnetism. However, the limitations of this system can be apparently found. The
intensity of the magnetic field is uneven, which is shown by the weakened near the entry end
sector and the intensified near the exit end sector (Guo, Zhou and Lian, 2012). This is known as
the end effect . Lee, Kim and Lee (2006) points out that its efficiency is relatively low due to the
end effect. This is further demonstrated by Guo, Zhou and Lian (2012), who claim that end effect
will produce a downwards pressure on the thrust force, which decreases the power efficiency and
affects the motor performance. Additionally, it tends to be evident that normal force can exert a
negative impact on the levitation system due to end

Change in the Victorian Period. the Role of Women.
Change in the Victorian period. The role of women. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland is the country whose rich history covers many periods and eras. It saw its ups
and downs, experienced both hardships and prosperity. It has been the leading power throughout
centuries, with many countries looking up to it and kneeling before it. Still, the echo of its
former majesty can be seen up to the present day. However, it is impossible to describe the periods
all at once. It would be better to single out an era, we are most interested in, and retrospect it,
emphasizing a certain aspect. So, the Victorian period is the one standing in the limelight and
capturing most attention. The era, preceded by the Georgian period and... Show more content on

There were numerous acts protecting the rights of men but almost none for women. Women were
deprived, neglected and usually considered to be the husband s property . Moreover, when
women s rights were violated there wee no institutions they could turn to for help. Men could get
the divorce when a case of adultery occurred, while women could actually get divorced if husband
s adultery was accompanied by cruelty or abuse. Previously, after the divorce all possessions went
to husbands leaving wives poor and deprived of everything. During the Victorian period some acts
were passed that changed the position of women in the society considerably. From than on, women
were allowed to keep their property. Nevertheless, even though women in the Victorian period didn
t get all the rights and freedoms they claimed for, the necessary steps were made to ensure the stable
position of females in the society. Observing the mentioned facts, we can say for sure that during
the prominent Victorian era women got more independence, social recognition and respect from the
opposite sex. Still, a lot was yet to be done. [ 2 ]. According to the statistics taken from the website

Attila The Hun Ethical Leadership
Synthesis Essay Attila the Hun
MSgt Aaron M. Hazen

Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officers Academy
30 January 2017 Attila the Hun History has Attila, King of the Huns labeled as a barbaric savage
that lacked refinement. The Huns had a powerful leader who used critical thinking to become one
of the most powerful leaders of the time. He civilized the Huns and changed his people from a
nomadic lifestyle that dated back 32 generations. He developed cities and gained territory for his
people to settle in and established commerce for trade and sale of goods. In this paper I will go
over the actions, decisions and behaviors that made Attila a visionary leader. Also we will review

Surprisingly contrary to that he was a man with a vision and led his people ethically to civilize
the Huns and make them a very strong nation. His actions and behaviors united his people and
instilled a shared vision of the future. He united tribes that all fought for a common purpose and
stopped fighting themselves. He used ethical behavior in his mannerism and avoided pitfalls by
not using silver platters as other kings would. Finally, I reflected on how I view myself as an
ethical and visionary leader rooted in the same principles that Attila believed in. The King of the
Huns inspired a nomadic people to become civilized and establish commerce based on his
visionary and ethical leadership. History saw him as a tyrant, but I see that he truly was one of the

Noir Film Analysis
American film noir didn t start as a genre but a visual style of film as depicted in 1940s American
films like This Gun for Hire, but following the coining of the term by post world war II french
scholars film noir especially from the 70s to the present day through films like LA Confidential
has evolved to a very recognizable and full featured genre . We are able to recognize films within
the noir genre as with any genre films for their distinct syntactic and semantic qualities, the same
theories/concepts Rick Altman uses to define the difficult concept of genre remain very similar
between the 1940s noir and today s contemporary neo noir. In talking about the syntactic and
semantic list of film noirits pretty helpful to know and understand what these elements are. It s
difficult to say that there is a sole formula for every noir film, but there are many recognizable
commonly occuring traits that remain constant from the genre s inception over 70 years ago going
forward into contemporary neo noir. In terms of syntactic elements as identified in the Belton text s
noir chapter the most universal elements would be the complex narrative structure, the violent
nature and involvement with crime, fem fatales, arbitration of justice, tough guys, and loneliness.
These are really what drive the film non visually whereas the semantics contribute to the visual
stylings of the film. Noir films share the common semantic elements of low key lighting, dark and
rainy nights, sequencing,

countries. Our partners to the east, Bahrain serves as a great asset to United States and Coalition
forces. Allowing the United States to maintain a certain military and political presence in the
Middle East. However this is not a one way alliance, Bahrain in return receives protection from
tactical ballistic missiles, air breathing threats as well as sea coverage from our presence in this
Middle East region. Bahrain is ranked 18th in the world economically, number 1 in the region.
With a population of 1.2 billion and an unemployment rate of 4.1%. There is no tax on the

The Importance of Social Networking
Social Networking
Andrea Whitfield
Ashford State University
INF 103 March 15, 2010
In today s society knowledge, having technical skills and access to information technologies, is
becoming very important for people who have become open mind and supportive with social
connections. Although resources and opportunities may be available, one may not necessarily
be aware of their existence, or even have direct access to them. In those cases, getting to know
people from different backgrounds, grades of expertise, and social levels turns out to be essential
or can be negative from all areas of networking. For instance, who among us has never needed a

Badoo has an estimated 124 million users, a truly global operation, the site is managed and run

million users and is a business based social network. Orkut, 100 million users is another Google
owned site; Orkut is very popular in India and Brazil. MySpace with 50million users once
dominated the social networking market, but declined steadily from 2008. Social networking is
growing stead vastly and will continue to grow with the advance of technology.(Connell,2009)
Social networking is a place where the sense of popularity is known and the more friends you
have on your face book the more popular you seem to become, but is this good or bad? How
many of your friends on face book do you actually know when you see them out and about and how
many of them do you interact with? Many people have taken to adding anyone they think they have
something in common with on face book for one reason or another. Just because they added them
does not mean they will ever communicate with them.
The bad part of all this has to do with status and in a society where people want to be more than
just that person we have come to want more friends on face book. Twitter is the same way but can
be ugly as many people and their favorite stars to

Windshield Essay
What To Do About A Chip In Your Windshield
If you re driving down the road and a big truck flings road debris against your windshield and
damages it, you re faced with the decision of whether to drive with the damage or call for
roadside repairs. Each situation is different, but generally, it isn t safe to drive with a damaged
windshield, and it may even be against the law in your jurisdiction. Fortunately, you can call a
mobile windshield repair truck to come to your location, whether it is by the road, at your work, or
at home. Here is some information about how the repair process works.
Evaluation Of The Damage
The first decision the glass contractor has to make is whether to repair or replace the
windshield. Even if the glass has to be replaced, it can usually be done at a mobile location. One
thing that determines if the glass can be repaired is the location of the chip. If it is directly in
front of your line of vision as you drive, the contractor may opt to replace the glass, ... Show more

Be sure to check your coverage before you have the work done so you know if you have to pay out
of pocket or if the contractor can bill your insurance company. If your windshield has to be
replaced, there is a better chance your car insurance will kick in so you can have the work done at
no cost to you.
Whether your insurance company pays for the repairs or not, you don t want to put off fixing the
glass. A sudden temperature change or hitting a bump in the road could cause the chip to send
out cracks that lead to further damage. When the glass is cracked, it isn t stable. That means you
aren t protected as well in case of an accident. Plus, if the damage spreads into your line of sight, it
could pose a danger when you re driving down the road. Make it a priority to repair your damaged
windshield as soon as you can so you stay safe when you

The Stereotypes Of Italian-Americans In The Godfather
Italy and America share a complicated history dating back to the 1800 s. More than 4 million
Italians immigrated to America after the 1870 s which is more than 10% of the nation s foreign
population. Italian Americans are an important ethnic society within America which have been
stereotyped by the media for many years. An ethnic group can be defined as a group of people who
share the same cultural background, language, ancestry or nation. Ethnicity and culturealthough
some might find them to have the same meaning are not quite the same, culture is a way to
describe human behaviour while ethnic groups are a primary characteristic of culture. Italian
Americans as an ethnic group have had a huge impact on the media because of their love... Show

This film is a prime example as to why Italian Americans are stereotyped as members of the
mafia with violent tendencies. These negative traits that are depicted through the characters are
why people believe that Italian Americans are like the characters the play. The Godfathers
depiction of the typical mafia gangster wearing the pin stripped suits and being extremely
wealthy creates their identity and that identity is portrayed to us a viewer as to how Italian
Americans really are. The Godfather portrays how powerful, respected and feared the head of
these mafia families are but also how dangerous their lifestyle is with Don Corleone head of the
mafia being nearly assassinated for refusing a deal with their rival family. Family is extremely
important to Italian Americans which is evident throughout The Godfather one aspect of their
ethnicity which is not over exaggerated or false, but this extreme loyalty which is portrayed by
Michael Corleone when his father is assassinated shows how brutal the mafia can be because of
their loyalty. The film defines Italian Americans as loyal but also willing to use violence as an
answer to all their problems. Retaliating with even more violence is the norm to these mafia
families and they see no wrong is doing so. The Godfathers depiction of Italian Americans I
believe has had an impact on the mainstream perceptions of them as an ethnic group because the
film depicts that the mafia is a crucial part of their life and that acts of violence to protect their
families are acceptable, this kind of ethnic stereotyping has been damaging to Italian Americans in
America who do not associate themselves with this mafia

  • 2. European Imperialism In British India The works of Thomas Metcalf, T.W. Roberts, Daniel Headrick, and other notable historians explore the development of the European imperial project through the use of architecture, technology, and medicine. These technologies become the machines and driving force of imperialism and are used to retain control over colonial regions. Headrick argues that these sciences provide the means to the motives behind the imperialist powers who are working to keep their territorial subjects subdued to their will. Without the means of technology, the motive can never be achieved, and the constructed empires are inevitably doomed to failure. Along with the means of technology, the invention, use, and implantation of these technologies also reflect the broader political and social trends of the empires. Architecture, technology, and medicine showcase the changes in imperial policies, ideologies and overarching view of the empireitself. (Present or Past Tense) Metcalf s analysis of architecture in British India shows how a combination of cultures becomes essential in designing an empire that reflected both the colonizer and the subjects. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, British officials realized that a serious reassessment of Indian culture was necessary for Britain to remain the colonial power. Metcalf explores the construction of the Mayo College and the architectural debates that came with building it. The formation and science behind the architecture are essential to empire building ... • 3. Computers Are A Necessary Part Of Our Lives Day Essay Computers are indeed a necessary part of our lives day in and out. Some of us need to face them all day, others spend only a few hours or less. Nevertheless it is undeniable all of us get to a certain point in time where our eyes feel the strain of using it. How can we avoid computer eyestrain? Here are a few pointers to help our eyes stay healthy. Break up the time we spend on the computer. For those that need to spend hours at a time on the computer, the degree of eyestrain often correlates with the length of usage of the computer. Taking a very short break after 30 minutes e.g. even if only for 1 minute will help to reduce the fatigue. Use eye lubricants when necessary. When using the computer, most of us stare at the screens because we are concentrating on something, This reduces the blink rate and results in dry eyes. For some, just resting the eyes by closing it for a short period helps to get our eyes sufficiently moist again, however some people s eyes are so dry that they need regular lubricants to alleviate the symptoms. Use eye lubricants that are recommended by your doctor. Do not get into the habit of using steroidal based eyes or eyedrops that cause vessel constriction (giving the false security of having white eyes) as these can cause future unwanted side effects such as glaucoma. When using lubricants, those with severe dry eyes should use it on a regular basis rather than waiting for their eyes to feel pain or discomfort first. Relax ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Biological Determinism Summary In his introduction, Gould enlightens us on the views of Socrates. All people should be educated and belong to one of three classes within society; rulers, auxiliaries and craftsmen. Socrates believes firmly that if this organization is upheld then society will be stable. It was said by Glaucon, that Socratesprophecies may be disseminated through the generations. This was in fact the case due to his claims being advanced by the science of the times (Gould, 1996). This book according to this introduction looks to discuss this science of biological determinism. Biological determinism is an idea that sees all human behavior as innate. It postulates that we function as a matter of our genetics, brain size and biology and not society or culture. ... • 5. Drug Discovery And Development Of New Medicine Describe and discuss recent developments in drug discovery. As our society is evolving so is diseases many drugs that were previously effective to cure certain diseases are simply not as effective any more or on the other hand there isn t sufficient medicine to battle the current new health problems that are arising with our evolving society for example obesity and a range of cardiovascular diseases. In addition many of the medicine available today either only treats the symptom or cures the disease with the addition of unwanted side effects. Hence, this is why drug discovery and development is vital. It is through drug discovery and development that new medicine is found. Currently a lot of effort is going into Binuclear metallohydrolases as a target in drug development. This is due to the fact this enzyme group has the potential to find solutions to health problems such as erectile dysfunctions, osteoporosis, cardiovascular dieses and also even become the seed in possible eradication of some antibiotic resistance. The main enzymes in the binuclear metallohydrolases group that are most vital us are purple acid phosphatases, metallo ОІ lactamases and arginases. The homologous feature in all these enzymes is the existence of two very nearly touching metal ions that hold the ability to attract water molecules that will then act as a nucleophile in a very particular hydrolytic reaction the importance of this is that it means that binuclear acids will have a powerful ionic ... • 7. Single Gene Disorder When a certain gene is known to cause a disease, it is referred as a single gene disorder or a Mendelian disorder. These disorders involve mutations in the DNA sequences of single genes. As a result, the protein the gene codes for is either altered or missing (Landsverk, 2013). Few examples of single gene disorders includes cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, Fragile X syndrome, muscular dystrophy, or Huntington disease. As a rule, single gene disorders are not very common. For example, only one in 2,500 people are born with cystic fibrosis. There are a number of inheritance patterns of single gene disorders that are predictable when you know what they are. LSDs result from incompletely digested macromolecules due to loss of enzyme function (Filocamo, 2013). These enzymes normally break down items for reuse in the cells. If the enzymes are missing or don t work properly, then the items can build up and become toxic. This happens in an area of the cell called lysosomes. To date, 51 genetically determined lysosomal storage diseases have been described. Since there can be different mutations of the same gene, they result in different clinical manifestations and are classified as infantile and adult types. The acquired disorders are the result of inhibition of О± mannosidase II by ingestion of plant materials of Astragalus lentginous, Oxiftropis serica, Swainsona canescens, and Ipomoea carena as well as treatment with certain drugs, such as amphophilic cationic drugs, amiodarone and chloroquine, which induce phospholipidosis and MPS. To verify nitrate has been reduced past nitrite, zinc powder is added to the medium. If the medium does not change colour after the addition of zinc powder, then the nitrates in the medium have been reduced further. If the bacterium does not use nitrate, then the addition of zinc powder will reduce the nitrates in the medium to nitrite, changing the medium to a pink or red colour. • 9. Disillusionment In The Vietnam War Thomas the Apostle once said that seeing is believing, and rightfully so. A person consciously chooses to stand firm in his beliefs until given cold, hard evidence that proves a different reality and opens his eyes. Coming to understand these new facts is a vital part of life that man must face in order to better understand the natural world. However, new knowledge can become a double edged sword when it attributes to man s disillusionment. However, American citizens no longer saw war with such optimism after witnessing the pessimistic reports that the news chose to televise. In one report, a journalist from CBS Evening News followed American troops as they pillaged and burnt down a village. Soon afterward, Americans became outraged (CBSN). At this point, America could no longer view war as something glorious. The United States not only witnessed as their troops cause death but also as their troops met their own ends. According to Spector, the media s tendency to report about negative events such as death undermined American support for the Vietnam War. As casualties increased, support decreased (Spector). It is also important to note that casualties would logically increase as the amount of time the war went on increasing. Since the news reported events unfolding in the war each day, a person would hear about death every day. These daily death reports would not only be extremely depressing, but they would also have a compound effect as time continued. The media s reports on death and destruction changed turned America s perception of war into one that was bleak and hopeless. • 11. Constructivist Teachers And Teaching Philosophy Teachers who have a constructivist basis for their philosophy of teaching and learning are seldom satisfied to use textbooks alone. Constructivists know that students must have motivation to search for meaning and create their own understanding of the world of ideas. When students want to know more about an idea, a topic, or an entire discipline, they put more cognitive energy into classroom investigations and discussions and study more on their own. There are five identified central tenets of constructivism as a teaching philosophy: Constructivist teachers seek and value students points of view. This concept is similar to the reflective action process we call withitness, in which teachers attempt to perceive students needs and respond to them appropriately; Constructivist teachers challenge students to see different points of view and thereby construct new knowledge. Learning occurs when teachers ask students what they think they know about a subject and why they think they know it; Constructivist teachers recognize that curricula must have meaning for students. When students see the relevance of curricula, their interest in learning grows; Constructivist teachers create lessons that tackle big ideas, not small bits of information. By seeing the whole first, students are able to determine how the parts fit together; Constructivist teachers assess student learning in daily classroom activities, not through the use of separate testing or evaluation events. • 13. Critical Information About A Patient s Plan Of Care Specific problem requiring change and Situation description: The shift report between the off going and oncoming nurses must include all of the critical information about a patient s plan of care. This information must be communicated. The change of shift report that is done incorrectly can be a result of missed information and poor communication between nurses, affecting their ability to deliver safe and efficient care for the patients. This problem occurs not just at one but at most hospitals, where inter shift report still continues to take place at the nursing station without inclusion or a visual of the patient until the report is done. As I witnessed shift report in the hallways or at the nursing stations of SCVMC of the 33 bed mother and baby unit, I noticed that at times unnecessary information is received and critical information may not be communicated. On the other hand, at Redwood City Kaiser neuroscience unit bedside inter shift nursing report works well and I have witnessed better nurse patient relationship, lower incidents of falls, strong teamwork, as well as improved nurse accountability and prioritization at the beginning of the shift. As evidence shows in the article Improving Client and Nurse Satisfaction Through the Utilization of Bedside Report , there is a direct correlation between the bedside report and both client and nurse satisfaction in care settings, validating the importance of changing to bedside report (Vines, Dupler, Guido, 2014). It was during Paul s second missionary journey, he and his companions set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony (Acts 12:11 12). They remained in the city, where they met a small group of Jews attending a prayer meeting by the river. Paul was able to preach to them, and Lydia and her household was baptized. Secondly, not only did Paul encourage the church, but he rebuked them for their disunity and contentiousness. His letter provided a sharp disagreement against the possibility of the Gospel being hindered because of the discord within the church. Paul wanted them to understand and imitate the same humility demonstrated by Christ (Acts 2). He admonishes the church to be of the same mind, having the same love, a being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves (Acts 2:2 3). He further shows the faithfulness and humility of two of his companions, Timothy and Epaphroditus as examples of individuals in harmony with the fulfillment of the work of Christ. • 16. The Problem With Communication Is The Illusion That It Has... Hey guys! :) So I missed Monday Mantra but I thought to make up for that, I would go ahead and post a Tuesday Truth which leads me into today s post Five Ways To Communicate Effectively . Since starting my new job, I have taken on a lot of new things. I am learning everyday and I love that but no matter how much we love to learn, or how much we think we already know, the one thing that will continue to be a work in progress throughout our lives is communicating effectively. As Mr. Shaw quotes, The problem with communication, is the illusion that it has been accomplished. This is especially true in the workplace. For many of us, our job demands that we multi task so right there, communication is weakened and it s easy to have misunderstandings that most of the time could have been avoided if we had just done one tiny thing Listen. Some us will admit we re not the best listeners and others will claim to be great listeners when in reality, they only listen with the purpose of responding and fail to absorb what is actually being said. Guilty as charged. As I mentioned earlier, big learning curve at work right now and in certain situations my primary language, English, falls short because English is not a first language for everyone I work with so training takes on a whole different meaning but in the best way possible. It has forced me to slow down, to be more mindful of tone and expression and really focus on what is and isn t being said. At first, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my research I also came across that Best Buy also participates in a U.S. and China joint Customs and Border Protection, they are also involved in a program called Custom Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C TPAT) in which I found very intriguing since you never hear of companies doing this or at least I have not, since I am military and while finding this out they will now have more support from me. I would say Best Buy is an organization that takes its social and ethic responsibilities serious and has surpassed my expectations. BestBuy learned early in the on in the beginning to engage in some sort of social responsibilities if they want to have a chance to survive. • 18. The Great Man Theory Of Leadership The Great Man Theory of leadership dates back to the early 1900s where it was strongly believed that great leaders are born, not made. The basic premise of this theory has been contested since the inception of leadership study. While recent studies show some evidence to the contrary, the fundamental principle of the theory does retain some validity. The historian Thomas Carlyle coined the Great Man Theory as he argues the world s history is simply a collection of biographies belonging to great men (U, 2016). Although referred to as the Great Man Theory, the foundation of the theory is gender neutral. It has more recently been termed the Great Man/Great Woman Theory of leadership, removing the gender associated bias. The lack of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although they have all likely attended a slew of leadership seminars and workshops, there remains a certain x factor they all possess. To gain a worldwide perspective on the question born or made, the Center for Creative Leadership posed the question to executives spanning 53 countries. The results indicated a consensus to the contrary of the Great Man Theory. More than half, 53.4% of respondents believe that leaders are made, referred to as Mades while only 19.1% believe that they are born, Borns . Interestingly, about a quarter of the executives surveyed, 28.5%, think leaders are both born and made. (Mascone, 2013) Analyzing further, a combined 47.6% think there is some validity to being born a leader. Thus, it proves difficult to arrive at a conclusion with empirical data in support of either theory. The survey expanded on various leadership topics in an effort to determine what Borns and Mades believe are important characteristics of leaders. Both Borns and Mades believe that leaders should be humane, charismatic, participative and team oriented. Borns are more likely to believe that following protocol and behaving in traditional ways in accordance with the status and position of a leader will make them more effective. ... • 19. The Problem Of California Drought California Drought It wasn t so long ago America experienced one of its biggest natural disasters. From this event many lost their homes, vegetation, and brought the great depression to an even worse position. The worst American drought was known as the dust bowl in the 1930 s, many citizens didn t see it coming because they didn t see the signs and for that same reason many suffered. Today California is receiving the same signs that it s coming to a drought, but the citizens don t seem to take it seriously to what the outcome could come too. The people from California need to understand that there has to be something done to preserve more water. Discipline is key to preserve more water, it can all start at home by also being responsible managing how much water you should be using. Cities as well should put in action by investing more money to give our community the best up to date irrigation system, and or have a larger amount of city workers around the clock inspect all the areas to see no wasting is occurring. As I said discipline is the key word for every citizen in California to understand if they would like to keep California out of a drought. Many people waste water in a daily basis where if one person may not seem like a lot, but multiply it with about more than 39,145,000 people that live in California doing the same thing, it tends to add up drastically. The Personal Rule came about when King Charles I dissolved parliament in 1629. It was symbolic of a time when the King felt that any joint governing of the country was impossible. Right from the start of Charles reign, relations had been poor with Parliament. But the time leading up to the start of the Personal Rule, or the Eleven Year Tyranny as it is sometimes referred, marked a low point. An obvious reason why Parliament could not work with the King was Charles deep emotional problems. Although this is not the most important reason, it is nevertheless an important one that cannot be overlooked. Charles was a deeply insecure man. His insecurity had roots in his childhood, where he was seen as the runt of the litter, and very much outshone by his older brother Henry. Perhaps his hard line approach of being unwilling to compromise or negotiate was because he lacked the emotional intelligence and confidence to reason with people effectively. In reality, this was probably a culmination of his strong belief in the Divine Right of Kings and his lack of confidence. In his history of the period, the Earl of Clarendon cited a major reason for Charles personality problems at not trusting himself enough . The King s speeches to Parliament lacked conviction, largely due to a constant stutter that he had possessed since birth. • 27. Juvenile Crime Solution It may seem shocking that America has one of the highest crime rates per capita compared to other similar industrialized nations. Over the years, there have been many discussions and efforts in order to reduce this problem. Perhaps one of the more sensitive issues when discussing crime in America is the problem of juvenile crime. Recently, juveniles make up 3% of all felonies committed each year and 6% of all violent crimes (criminamerica.net). These statistics have troubled politicians for decades as they have worked to find a solution. Starting in 1994 the Clinton administration started putting stricter punishment on juvenile offenders, but it was quickly realized that this harsh punishment may not be the best solution. Various studies and programs put into action have shown that early prevention in a child s life is much more effective and more cost efficient in reducing crime. Because of these efforts, juvenile crime has reduced 68% since the violent boom of the 1990s. In light of these discoveries, it is important for states to focus on these results in order to reduce crime. In the 1990s, as crime was continuing to rise at a steady rate, American leaders soon realized they had a crisis on their hands. In response to this, President Bill Clinton released a bill in 1994 aiming to take extreme action in combatting crime. We can easily calculate that the opportunity cost for China to only produce 1 kilo precious metals is 1/100=0.01 kilo of soybeans. The U.S. s opportunity cost for only product 1 kilo precious metals is 500/1=500 kilos of soybeans per kilo. Compare with these two number we can see there is a huge difference between China and the U.S. s cost for producing precious metals, which is 500/0.01=50000 times. In the poem, To Elsie, William Carlos Williams asks us the many questions lurking beneath the pavement of our perception behind the American dream: what are the pure products of America and what is the reality of this imagined concept? Through the use of texture and form, Williams perfectly depicts with cynical aptitude the recycled degradation of society. In To Elsie, a depraved America is personified through the history and conception of a woman named Elsie. The poem begins in the muck and destitution of the lower working class. When a woman is raped, a child named Elsie is born out of wedlock and that child grows to become a housemaid of a rich doctor s family. Almost in cycle, she becomes the subject of prying eyes and perverse fantasies of rich men. Elsie is thus a symbol of America used and corrupted by the debauched society we live in. From the very beginning, the poem s diction is designed as a method of psychology to detach the mind of the reader from the picture portrayed. In the introductory line, The pure products of America... go crazy (l.1, l.2), the mind of the reader is manipulated by use of the words pure products. There is an emphasis of stressed R s consonants, especially in the words products and crazy , giving essentially a very raw and industrial grinding roll of the tongue. FEASIBILITY Hearst and the business team have three options, on one hand a line extension or new product positioned against Plax could be introduced into the market and in the other hand doing nothing and just looking at claims other than breath instead of adding a new product. Launching a new product new pre brushing rinse, for example would cannibalize a part of Scope sales, also the delivery, marketing and capital costs of P G will increase if a new rinse was launched and the user of Scope would be confused since he/she saw in the old scope a breath refreshment, taking into consideration that the new rinse is not any better than Plax in reducing plaque, but at the same time it may increase the market share of P G and increase its profit. However, the irresponsible use of plastic bags has led to a number of impacts; particularly towards the environment. The negative implications on the use of plastic bags causes conflict where there is a need for the manufacture of plastic bags, especially the usual conventional bags used for shopping, to be reduced or banned. The book gives you many scenarios on everyday life situations in which economics is used for example prostitution, cable tv causing more crime, and etc. Levitt and Dubner are brilliant authors, who wrote a book about some of the most controversial topics tying it all into economics. How brilliant is that? Economics is one of those topics that many either love or hate discussing. In the introduction of the book the authors discuss the statistics of walking drunk vs driving proving with statistical data that pedestrians are more like to be killed walking drunk and drivers who driver drunk. Cable television has more of a negative effect on children and teenagers with all of the violence and negativity that is seen on tv today. I believe that this is the case because cable tv programs and video games such as grand theft auto and others place a perception on children and young adults that creating crimes is okay and easy to get out of, which is true for the virtual world but not the same for the real world. These negative traits that are depicted through the characters are why people believe that Italian Americans are like the characters the play. The Godfathers depiction of the typical mafia gangster wearing the pin stripped suits and being extremely wealthy creates their identity and that identity is portrayed to us a viewer as to how Italian Americans really are. The Godfather portrays how powerful, respected and feared the head of these mafia families are but also how dangerous their lifestyle is with Don Corleone head of the mafia being nearly assassinated for refusing a deal with their rival family. Family is extremely important to Italian Americans which is evident throughout The Godfather one aspect of their ethnicity which is not over exaggerated or false, but this extreme loyalty which is portrayed by Michael Corleone when his father is assassinated shows how brutal the mafia can be because of their loyalty. The film defines Italian Americans as loyal but also willing to use violence as an answer to all their problems. Retaliating with even more violence is the norm to these mafia families and they see no wrong is doing so. The Godfathers depiction of Italian Americans I believe has had an impact on the mainstream perceptions of them as an ethnic group because the film depicts that the mafia is a crucial part of their life and that acts of violence to protect their families are acceptable, this kind of ethnic stereotyping has been damaging to Italian Americans in America who do not associate themselves with this mafia ...
