Comparison of the Effectiveness Of Imagery in “ The Secret...
While writing stories it is importing to keep in mind that readers should be able to picture the
story in their mind while reading. It is best to use effective ways to explain or describe the point;
such as, wording and writing format, in order to grab reader s attention and interest them.
Referring to the readings The secret of Walter Mitty written by James Thurber, and Bartleby the
scrivener written by Melville, both have been written in a great effective way for readers to use
their imagery and develop the ideas of what the story is about. Providing that, both stories have
described the character and setting with enough details to be effective imagery for readers.
Understanding the story and the main characters requires a suitable description of characteristic
and personality of people in the story. Therefore, both stories have introduced the characters
with a brief description to leave a picture of the characters in readers head. In reading The secret
of Walter Mitty, Walter Mitty has been described as a middle age man who has trouble handling
mechanical tasks, forgets mostly everything easily, and someone who is a daydreamer. This
description of Walter Mitty gives readers a picture of a man who may not be able to work very
well and may not have a strong memory. But, daydreams of having great times to forget and not to
worry about his sad moments and his disability. Someone who wants to stay happy and tries to
make his life interested and joyful the way he

Liberal News Media Analysis
News sources are networks where many people are informed about important news event. Being
liberal bias about news networks is to be open to new opinions about an event and sometimes
can be given false information or misinterpretation about it. Having a conservative view about
the news is still having to hold to certain beliefs and values and being cautious about what
changes are happening. Many people get news from the six powers house news networks that
are either liberal or conservative. CBS, ABC, and NBC were the only news networks, since
1948, where people were able to get the recent news happening and are now considered the
mainstream news channels which also have a liberal view about the news. CNN, MSNBC, and
CNBC are the news networks that run in cable tv and are considered ultra... Show more content on

These cable news started in the 1980s because the mainstream news did not get all the
information out and were not telling the whole truth. Later in 1996, FOX News started and
became really popular because of being both liberal and conservative and were considered the
truth seekers. FOX News decided to become a news network because since all the other six news
networks were not telling the whole truth, Fox decided to get the information and tell the truth
without lying and getting everything out. Before cable news, the mainstream news networks were
the only channels where many people get the news. All three news networks talk about the same
event happening currently, but not all will have the same details and have different information
and sometimes that information is not truth or correct because these news sources want to be the
first ones to get the news on air for people to view and at times leave out the main focus of the
occurrence. ABC, CBS, and NBC are liberal bias and at times misinterpreted the news and give
false information. According to an online timeline of the television in the

Sexual Harassment In The Military Essay
Over the last several years the Canadian Military has come under considerable pressure to
appropriately deal with the moral issue of sexual harassment and assault of women within its
sphere. The Canadian media has given a number of reports during this time that have attacked
military leaders for their failure to bring about constructive change. The moral issue of how women
are treated in the militaryis of upmost importance; however I have chosen to write on the moral
issue of honesty and accuracy in news reporting. Was the media honest and accurate in its
reporting when it constantly used a news byte from a recent interview with General Tom Lawson,
leader of the Canadian Armed Forces? The news byte being considered gave a detrimental or
slanted view of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reaction to the newsbyte from women s groups, the House of Commons and the general public was
swift with calls for General Lawson to immediately resign, despite the fact that he is due to retire
this autumn.
The full interview:
Canada s military chief says sex assaults continue to be a problem in the Canadian Forces because,
we re biologically wired in a certain way.
Appearing Tuesday on CBC s The National, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson said that
sexual harassment and assaults continue to plague the military because men are biologically
predisposed to force themselves on women.
It s a terrible issue, it s one that disturbs the great majority of everyone in uniform and yet, we re
still dealing with it, Lawson said.
It would be a trite answer, but it s because we re biologically wired in a certain way and there will
be those who believe it is a reasonable thing to press themselves and their desires on others. It s not

An Analysis Of Elie Wiesel s The Jewish Scriptures
Set in early 1930 s Sighet, Elie Wiesel is expected to do as he is told and continue to further his
studies in the Jewish scriptures. Young Elie becomes intrigued by the vast amount of
knowledge he has absorbed over his youthful fifteen years, and determined to verse himself in
Kabballah, a more intense and deeper branch of the holy texts. Going against his father s word,
he dives into the water, swimming into depths uncharted by all Sighet boys his age. One day, in
his search for intellect, Wiesel met a man, worn by age, and wised by life. Moishe the Beadle he
said he went by. The two shared a special passion for Kabballah. Upon meeting the Beadle, Elie
began to extend his learning. Time progressed until Moishe the Beadle vanished with no word.
Days later he came back in a state quite unexplainably poor. The man was sad and scared out of
his mind, but it was the worry and the concern that had spoken to Elie and the villagers. It was
his worrisome and concerned voiced that pleaded everyone to listen. To heed his advice and run.
Run far and wide. Run, and don t stop. Run until they reached a safe haven. The boy cried wolf
but the villagers did not seize to listen, not even once. Little did they know what fate had in store
for them. Finally, the monsters and creatures crawled out of the darkness of the Beadle s
imagination. Impeccably charismatic, and skilled in the field of first impressions, the behemoths
won the trust and respect of many of the people in no time... but it

Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address
The pattern of the prodigal is: rebellion, ruin, repentance, reconciliation, restoration (Edwin Louis
Cole). Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address is a speech that highlights every point in
Cole s quote. He, Lincoln, talks about how the south manages to rebel, how their economy will be
left in ruin, how they will repent and be forgiven by both God and the North, how the North and the
South will reconcile, and finally he talks of how the nation will move on to restoration. Abraham
Lincolns Second Inaugural Address emphasizes the reconciliation of a torn apart nation by
appealing to pathos, logos, and ethos and by using diction to appeal to the listener s emotion.
The American Civil Warbegan on April 12, 1861 when the Southern United States seceded from
the union. The first battle, taking only thirty four hours, caused Lincoln to officially rally troops
against the South. Most Northern Americans would eventually learn to love Lincoln s courage;
however, many Southern Americans would despise Lincoln. Throughout the civil war many
lives were lost, and many families were torn apart. Lincoln would remain a strong figure
throughout the war. He would give his people hope, he would give his people courage, and he
would give his people strength. Around the time the Civil War was drawing to a close, Lincoln
was being reelected. The general of the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee, surrendered after a battle in
Virginia. His troops surrendered in April, a little over a

Importance Of Immigration Reform
Not all immigrants are good people, but the good people are living in fear, but they shouldn t
because there should be an immigration reform. Immigration has always been a problem in the
United States. There are estimated 11 million immigrants living in the U.S, most of them are good
people trying to get a better life for their families. These people are often discriminated for being in
fact illegal immigrants , but they are hard working people who deserve better.
Immigrants are always working so they definitely provide to the economy in some way or another.

illegal because they are afraid of getting deported. Especially now, due to some of the
deportations that have been happening recently. According to usatoday.com employers are
reporting difficulties with workers uneasy about coming to work. It also says that business with
a large amount of Latino customers have noticed a drop in sales because they are avoiding

State Trooper Research Paper
Have you thought about what you want to do after high school i have thought about it over and

Arkansas State Trooper. The history of the Troopers, is that on march 19th it was approved that
arkansas had a state police department. When it first started out, they were just seen as rangers .
By 1948, the state trooper had grew in size, were there were now over sixtyfive officers,
including highway patrol and criminal investigation. In the same year the state police stated being
called as highway patrol as troopers . By the year 1957 the state police had doubled in size. At this

Having a career it is very important to make sure that you have benefits. As having benefits as a
state trooper, they would be social security, disability, healthcare, pension, and also you have
time off and to be with your family. In every job that we people have, there are risk that come
with the job. Some of the risk of being a state trooper is accidents happening, for example a hit
and run, when you pull someone over, and you are hit from the side or if someone is trying to
leave a sense. A bigger risk is someone not wanting to get into trouble for something that they
have done and they may try to fight you. For example, just this year alone there have been 76
police officers who have been killed. Most of them deaths have came from people who either
ran the police officer over, or have shot the officer. But like i had said, with every job there is
there are the benefits, and then there are the risk. That is why I choose this career over any other
ones. I want to be the one who can try to make sure that people are following the rules of the state,
maintaining the highways and the

Waiting For Superman
Ever since we were young kids we used to believe that in times of crisis Superman would come to
our rescue, however the most heartbreaking day in our childhood was probably when we realized
that Superman did not exist. Similarly, parents look for proper education for their children however
they soon find that just like Superman, this educationdoes not exist. In Waiting for Superman ,
Davis Guggenheiminforms parents that schools are failing to produce successful students and
inspires his viewers to act against this injustice.

where only 13% of their students are proficient in math. Then she ll go to Roosevelt High
School, which is one of the worst high schools in LA, with 50% dropout rate, and only 3 out of
100 meet the academic requirements for admission to a public California College (Waiting for
Superman ). Daisy hopes that one day she will be a doctor or veterinarian because she wants to
help people. But Guggenheim skillfully uses Daisy to show that her dreams have a very low
chance of coming true because of her school. Guggenheim uses these kids as heart wrenching
stories that reach out to the viewers to take a stance and make change. He furthermore uses a
cause and effect strategy to claim that if parents want better education for their kids, it means
having more options. Many parents want their children to attend a charter school such as Daisy
s parents who want her to enter KIPP LA Prep because the students become more advanced in
reading and writing. However due to the popularity of these charter schools, to get in she ll have
to participate in a lottery. If Daisy wins the lottery she will be able to get on a good path to
achieve her dreams. As the movie shows parents and children scream when they find out they got in

Law And Public Policy
The Law and Public Policy At every level of government, laws are passed to implement a public
policy. In fact, almost every law in the country enforces some public policy or provides for some
kind of public service. Public Policy plays important roles in areas such as: requiring
immunizations and setting speed limits to limiting sales of firearms and restricting the sale of
drugs and alcohol. Laws are intended to serve the greater good by implementing public policies.

marriage. This assignment will describe the stakeholders involved; describe the laws and bills that

Not only does denying same sex unions deem gay and lesbian families as not worthy, it prevents
them from legal protections, rights and obligations valued as lawful by states to support the
respectability and success of family. Per the authors in Introducing Public Administration, because
policy making involves so many aspects, so many players, and so many issues, it is difficult to
grasp it as one single thing (Shafritz, 2013). Due to the biblical, societal and constitutional
implications that are involved in making gay marriage legal, it offers open dialogue for what is
legal in the eye of the law for something that has not always been constitutional for decades.

My Son The Fanatic Essay
My son the fanatic is a short story by the author Hanif Kureishi first published in The New
Yorker 1994. In the story we meet the Pakistani immigrant Parvez and his son Ali. Parvez
migrated from Pakistan before he got his son. They now live in London, England, where Ali was
born and raised. Working as a taxi driver Parvez haven t had an ease getting money, but with
dedication, he has raised enough money for his son to get the dream education as an accountant.
But lately Ali has acted significantly different. A change from what you would call a normal

Ali is remarkably dedicated and confident in his religion, and nothing can persuade him into
another assumption of life. It is evident that Ali has nothing left for Western people, in the way he
behaves towards his father when they talk/discuss life viewpoints. All things considered Ali is
steadfast in his faith, and doesn t seem likely to change.
Bettina works as a mirror in this story. She reflects the set of values that Parvez and Ali have. In
their opinions about her, we can clearly see the difference that Parvez s and Ali s philosophy of life
possesses. Bettina s character is within the culture clash of Parvez and Ali.
The thematic in this short story is definitely a culture clash between the West and the muslims. In
the right hand we have a father, Parvez who symbolize the Western culture, and in the left hand we
have Ali who represent the muslims. The story deals with a well known conflict, the divide between
the fundamentalists and the materialists. Not only this it also shows the generational conflict where

Language In Rabbit Proof Fence
Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington
Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people
being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated
properly. Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australias history. Many aboriginal
children didn t want to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof
Fence has been created from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has
created many representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual
elements and the audio components.
The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous
people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs,
Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that
they were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she
didn t want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had
no authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary.
It was used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. When the Grandmother
came to the car with a large stick, which she may have used to try and break the car windows,

Katherine Anne Porter, Ernest Hemingway, And Robert Frost
Katherine Anne Porter, Ernest Hemingway, and Robert Frost were only some of the author s
that reflected the modern era in their literary work.Change , rebelliouness, fresh, current, etc.,
are words that could be used to describe the Modern Era. The Modern Era Consist of many
changes, changes the revolutionized the world. The lost generation is an example of a change
that occured the Modern Era. The lost generation basically was a grouo of writer s that served in
the war that felt alienated. The Lost Generation questioned the American Dream after seeing the
conditions of work places. This was a change because before this time rarely ever did anyone
ever question the American Dream or even the way of American living. Another, change that took
place in the Modern Era was Jazz Age. The Jazz Age was a tim when the younger generation
started questioning a lot of things. The younger and older generation also started conflicting with
each other because they were acting out, being more new school / modern rather than old school.
Change especialy took off during this time with Flappers, who started to be more rebellious withe
there clothes, hair, etc.; Speakeaises, underground clubs that served alcohol during the Prohibtion
which was the banning of alcohol; and Music, such as Jazz;afterall, it was called the Jazz Age.
The biggest change was in the NYC. The literaary scene in NYC changed dramatically, because of
the rebelliousness. The literary scene started to becom more hippie

Summary Of The Departure The Arrival
Lubna Warawra s The Departure The Arrival, and Nila Somaia Carten s February 1, 1992, from
When Your Voice Tastes Like Home: Immigrant Women Write, are short stories written in first

about her experience immigrating to Torontofrom the West (Western) Banks of war torn Palestine

her mother prefers sunrise, Warawra enjoys the sunset. She deems the sunset is a start of a new

a new step in her life; the sunrise to come. In February 1, 1992, by Nila Somaia Carten, Somaia
Carten also symbolizes her conflicts in immigrating, more so with objects than words. On her
flight to Vancouver, Somaia Carten is very nervous about her immigration. Her sweaty palms
represent the nervousness she feels anticipating the landing of the plane, the palms of my hands

asserts how difficult it is for her to make the decision to leave her comfort zone and immigrate to
Canada. Unlike Warawra, Somaia Carten is not fleeing a war zone. Comparable to Warawra,

Analysis Of Rainbow s End And Jane Harrison s Rainbows End
As a result of discovery, individuals are opened to the opportunity to transform and in doing so,
renew perceptions of themselves and those around them. In having renewed perceptions,
individuals are automatically exposed to new experiences and perspectives, and as a result
undergo personal growth. Change is an aspect of discovery that is enabled by past experiences
and in this, transformation is achieved. Through Jane Harrison s Rainbow s End, a 1950 s play
about three generations of an Aboriginal family, and Gwen Harwood s Father and Child, a poem
exploring the transformation of a child we are able to explore the way change is inflicted through
experiences of discovery and the responses we find as a result of this. Maturation and... Show more

Feelings of sadness and sympathy towards Dolly and the situation she is in. Individuals may
feel a sense of loss, where they are encouraged to rediscover something about themselves and
essentially, gain a new understanding of themselves and those around them. Through the sexual
assault scene, we establish that Dolly has lost all the innocence she once endured. As a result of
this loss, she matures and transforms into who she becomes. This is shown through Harrison s
use of symbolism. When Dolly s clothes are stripped off her, this shows essentially the stripping
away of her innocence. From this we see that she is no longer a young girl, but a woman. We see
this in the the way she defies Jungi. Through Dolly s discovery and transformation, her emotional
state is threatened, thus causing her ultimate change. This concept of Dolly s loss of innocence
transforming into a growth of maturity implies that growth is compulsory as a result of a loss or
significant event in an individual s life. Some discoveries may be the result of significant
experiences that one undergoes. In moving on from these experiences, the discoveries can be
provoked and have the ability to open the eyes of individuals. Gwen Harwood s Father and Child
explores the growth and maturation of a child. Harwood shows the juxtaposition between innocence
and maturity and the way that discovering this deepens the perception one has of the world. The

Analysis Of The Article How A Cockpit Remembers Its Speed
One day after reading Hutchins How a Cockpit Remembers its Speed, I was on an airplane flying

and flaps that Hutchins described in his article I m happy to say I was able to give a
rudimentary description to my girlfriend as to what was going on as we took off and landed!
Hutchins argued that there are many representations that are inside the cockpit system, yet outside
the heads of the pilots (pp 267). This first point I agree with; however, he goes on in the
discussion to conclude that the cockpit systems remembers its speeds (pp 286). While Hutchins
and I agree that the pilots are the focal point of the cockpit, I wouldn t go as far as to say that
cockpit remembers its speed. The cockpit is certainly a complex system, with many elements
combining to create the phenomenon of an aircraft that can control its speed and maneuver the

alternative. The authors also predicted possible deleterious effects of visitors who produced
misconceptions, but argued that experts would counteract this effect by responding correctly. I
think that the amount of these deleterious effects would depend on the type of museum. While

In other words, I lacked the rhetoric of rhetoric.
Consider this: you bring your vehicle to an auto mechanic to resolve an issue, and you are
attempting to explain in mutually understood terms where the problem lies. The mechanic may
have the most advanced knowledge possible in his or her field. He or she will be able to
diagnose your issue using expensive, specialized equipment, and be able to draw upon years of
experience to do so. Yet, as the owner of the vehicle, and someone with no technical knowledge in
this field, it is still up to you to attempt to explain to the mechanic where to start looking for the
problem.
It makes a noise when I turn left, you might say.
What kind of noise? the mechanic asks, Like a grinding noise? A bumping or knocking sound?

Comparing Saul And David
Saul and David had a lot in common. Both were kings of Israel while Samuel was its prophet.
Both men were considered attractive. 1 Samuel 9:2 describes Saul as a choice and handsome
man, and there was not a more handsome than he among the sons of Israel. David is described as
he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance in 1 Samuel 16:12. While Saulwas
sent to find the lost donkeys, Davidwas a shepherd over flocks of sheep. Both men were handpicked
by God. God revealed his choice through the prophet Samuel who also anointed them both.
Both Saul and David were men of war. Each led armies against the enemies of Israel. They were
both politically perceptive and operated prophetically. The difference between these two

My Leadership Reflection Paper
Glimpses of Me
The following is a self reflection of my leadership style and the experiences in my careers that
have led me to a Captain with the Henderson Police Department. The intent is to provide the reader
with some insight into why I am the person that I am and what I need to do to improve myself and
in turn the department as a whole.
I was born in May of 1968 in San Diego, California. I was the first of what would eventually
become 3 children. My parents divorced when I was five and I spent my early years with my
mother and sister, visiting my father on the weekends.
In 1980, my mother remarried and we moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where my younger brother
was born, 13 years my junior. My step father was not a father figure by any ... Show more content

There was not much in the way of mentoring or assistance in guiding my career, but being new and
wanting to please, I worked hard and did what I was asked, even if I did not like the way it was
asked.
In 1995 the department decided that it needed a Crime Prevention Unit and I was selected to design
and implement this unit. They failed to mention that I was the unit and would be doing it by myself.
Based on the success I had in the Crime Prevention Unit, I was asked to create a Crime Analysis
Unit and then asked to implement Computer Forensics into our Investigations Bureau. During all
of these assignments, I worked as an individual and answered to a supervisor, who was uninvolved
as long as I did not cause them issues up the chain and obtained results.
The problem with this was that I learned to depend on no one and developed patterns that
prevented me from learning how to deal with and in turn lead others. If a project missed a
deadline it was my fault. I had the timelines, the due dates, and where the project was in my head
at all times. There was no need to determine how vacations, sick leave or any other scheduling
issue would interfere with the completion of a project. I never had to learn how to ask another
person to pick up the pace, provide a status check, handle additional workload, etc. Basically, I was
a one man show, which as I moved up the ranks of my department, turned into a weakness as I had
not developed those interpersonal

Aristotle Voluntary Or Involuntary
Virtue, then, is about feelings and actions. These receive praise or blame when they are voluntary,
but pardon, sometimes even pity, when they are involuntary (Nicomachean Ethics Book III 1109b).
Aristotle believed that every action one partakes in is considered to be either voluntary or
involuntary, and that for each circumstance an action is looked upon differently. Although, Aristotle
brings up an astounding point: some actions may have the ability to be mixed , meaning they are
both voluntary and involuntary actions. But now consider actions done because of fear of greater
evils, or because of something fine ( Nichomachean EthicsBook III 1110a 4 5). Actions performed
under threat brought up many conflicts in Aristotle s argument.... Show more content on

Through defining what Aristotle thought to be involuntary, he was able to define the voluntary.
Finding that a voluntary act must be known by he/she performing the act, and must be
originated by him/her. For example, if one is to choose to take an action such as to eat a cookie,
this action has been processed in their own mind, and decided without any outside pressure
causing it to be a voluntary action. ...For, presumably, it is not correct to say that action caused
by emotion or appetite is involuntary. For, first of all, on this view none of the other animals
will ever act voluntarily; nor will children... (Nicomachean Ethics Book III 1111a 24 27). He
states a fact to say that if every action done out of instinct was considered to be involuntary then
many actions which are considered voluntary would no longer be considered so. While
involuntary actions are caused by something that could cause pain, voluntary actions are said to be
caused my pleasure. Next, among all the actions caused by appetite or emotion do we do none of
them voluntarily? Or do we do the fine actions voluntarily and the shameful involuntarily? (Book III
1111a 28 30). Aristotle states that it is absurd to think the things we want are involuntary. He states
that this is because some

Understanding Cultural Discourse Of Logic And Emotion
Emotions Versus Logic
Maybe the most sure way to understand cultural discourse of logic and emotions cultures. The
contrast in the middle of logic and emotion cultures relies on upon the amount of importance is
found in the context versus in the code. Emotions cultures, for example, the American society, have
a tendency to place additionally significance in the dialect code and almost no importance in the
context. Hence, correspondence has a tendency to be particular, unequivocal, and scientific
(Hofstede Geert H, 1997).
In logic cultures, significance is implanted more in the context as opposed to the code. As Hall

The inquiry is who would we be able to trust to come clean about Islam? The answer you will get
by passing by conversing with Muslims has the point of preference that on the off chance that you
pick the right nation and the privilege Muslim, you will get the right reply. Be that as it may, in the
event that you ask the wrong Muslim (typically called a fanatic or radical Muslim) you will get
the answer you won t care for. Is Saudi Arabia or Turkey the right nation to go to? Is a Wahabbi

Kennedy Flexible Response Essay
The most successful foreign policy was Flexible Response because it allowed for President John F.
Kennedy to deal with foreign issues with both military and nonmilitary options. Kennedy took the
position after Dwight D. Eisenhower with a narrow victory over Richard Nixon. Though the Soviet
Union was causing trouble at the time, Kennedy focused on Cuba. The foreign policy of Flexible
Response played a large role in dealing with the Soviet Unionand Cuba. Cuba had a rising
communist leader named Fidel Castro but as soon as Cuba became friends with the Soviet Union,
President Eisenhower broke ties with the country. To eliminate the threat of the rising leader,
President Eisenhower devised a plan. This event would later be called the Bay of Pigs... Show more

That s why Flexible Response worked because of the different alternatives the government had to
handle the situation. During the Cuban dilemma, the Soviet Union was planning to send nuclear
missiles to Cuba and from there, only ninety miles away, they would be aimed at the United States.
To prevent this Kennedy sent a blockade of ships to stop the missiles from entering Cuba. The
situation became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis and this impacted the people of the United
States. From home, they waited for six long days as the Soviets approached Cuba and the
blockade. The people lived as though this would be their last day because if anyone were to fire,
World War III would have broken out. This was similar to Brinkmanship because the country was
approaching the verge of war but again this was a military option President Kennedy used to stop
the missiles from reaching Cuba. Had Kennedy not send his blockade, the world would have been
on the verge of nuclear warfare. This blockade made Nikita Khrushchev, current leader of the

Naturally, I m talking about Alcatraz Island or The Rock as it s also known. Over a million

the people surprised to learn that Alcatraz was more than a former federal penitentiary.
Alcatraz was initially a military prison. During the Civil War, Confederate sympathizers and

Analysis Of Home Life In Colonial Days
The colonization in the new continent took place in the sixteenth century after many failed
attempts. It is thanks to the first European settlers that the United States of America was later
formed. As colonizers left their homelands and traveled across the Atlantic ocean in hopes of
finding fortune and a better life, they were faced with the opposite. Although after some time
they soon started considering the New World and the colonies formed as their new homes. In
spite of the first travellers to arrive being simply men, women started arriving slowly to the new
discovered land as Tobacco Wives. They were sent so the settlers could start families and
procreate. As time progressed more and more families of different social statues and religious
groups arrived to the unknown land. The history behind the colonization is very known although
many times the acute details of the home life are not spoken of. Thanks to the book Home Life in
Colonial Days written by Alice Morse Earle, one becomes aware of the settlers day to day life.
In the book, Alice Morse Earle writes about all characteristics in regards to the life of the colonist
in the new land. Every part of the life of colonists including the struggles they faced, type of
homes that were built, how they looked inside and the way individuals ate and served the food are
mentioned as well as the occupation each member of the household had and the popular fashion
attire at the time. In addition she too spoke of Sacred Sundays

This ACE inhibiter is isolated from the Viper s venom and is injected for treating high blood

It is very difficult to think of the dreadful, fatal snake and consider it as helpful in making cure for

Self Concept Is Our Self Identity Essay
Self concept is our self identity, and is the way that one perceives itself, it includes both attitudes
and the collection of beliefs. Self Concept also branches out into self image and self esteem. Self
image, is the way the person pictures itself. The self esteem is the way we evaluate ourselves. We
identify ourselves by our communication, and our interactions with others. In other words I think,
therefore I am (RenГ© Descartes; ego cogito, ergo sum ) If a person was to tell another person
what they think they look like, odds are that that person may view himself as what the other person
thinks/views him as. It could either raise or lower the self esteemof the person, it could also
enhance the way we view ourselves, depending on the type of people the person associates,
communicates and experience interactions with them. If a person associates himself or herself
with educated people, he or she will most likely feel respected. If he or she associates with people
of less morals, odds are that that person may just have a lower self esteem and self image
compared to the person that hangs around overall good people.
It is believed that developing a self concept is essential to perform well in the work place. A work
place involves a constant interaction between its workers and environment, communication. Believe
it or not communication and self esteem are related, we perceive ourselves based on our own
experiences and communication with others. The people one is surrounded by

Eukaryote and Prokaryote Bacterial Cells Differences
Abstract
This paper explores the functional anatomical differences between prokaryote and eukaryote
bacterial cells and the process by which substances move across the cell membranes. The cell
theory is a widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things. The
cell theory states All living things or organisms are made of cells and their products, new cells
are created by old cells dividing into two, and cells are basic building units of life (Tortora et al,
2002) Prokaryotes and eukaryotes cells are chemically similar in their composition ... Show more

Its division is by binary fission. Prokaryotes have no histones, their DNA is not associated with
histones whereas, and the DNA of eukaryotes is consistently associated with these special
chromosomal proteins called histones and with no histone. Bacteria species are differentiated by
morphology, biochemical activities, source of energy and chemical composition. Bacteria comes
in great many sizes and several shapes. Most bacteria range from 0.2 to 2.0 um in diameter and
from 2 to 8 um in length. Three basic cellular arrangement of bacteria shapes are coccus( spherical),
bacillus (rod shaped), and spiral(twisted), Only pleomorphic bacteria like rhizobium and
corynebacterium can assume varieties of shapes.
However, among the structures external to the prokaryotic cell wall are the glycocalyx, flagella,
axial filaments, fimbriae and pili. Many Capsules Prokaryotes secret on their surface a
substance called glycocalyx (meaning sugar coat), which surrounds the cell. This is referred to
as capsule when it is firmly attached to the cell wall. The presence of a capsule can be
determined by negative staining. If not organized or is loosely attached to the cell wall, the glycol
calyx is serves described to be a slim layer or extracellular polysaccharide. Capsules protect
pathogens from phagocytosis and cell adherence to surfaces thereby providing nutrients to the

Idealism In A Wall Of Fire Rising By Edwidge Danticat
In A Wall of Fire Rising by Edwidge Danticat, Guy is a poor Haitian man stuck struggling in a
shantytown with his wife and son. This kind of life is the only one he has ever known but, dreams
stir within him. When his son gets the part of a legendary Haitian revolutionary in the school play,
Guy s idealism begins to beat up against the reality of his situation causing this loving father and
husband to become increasingly weary of life.
Guy s idealism shows itself most boldly in his obsession with the balloon. He dreams of escaping
the difficult life that he has by taking off in the owner s son s hot air balloon that is kept by the
sugar mill. His obsession is so great that During the day when the field was open, Guy would
walk up to the basket [of the balloon], staring at it with the same kind of longing that most men
display when they admire very pretty girls (370). What s more is that he honestly believes that
from somewhat distant observation, he could pilot the balloon if given the chance, even though
it is a job that requires several people (373, 376). In the field with his wife, Guy makes a plea for
her to understand his infatuation with the balloon which is actually an intense desire for escape.
He tells her, Sometimes, I just want to take that big balloon and ride it up into the air. I d like to
sail off somewhere and keep floating until I got a really ice place with a nice plot of land where I
could be something new...Just be something new (375).

The Ethical Considerations Of Children And Young People
Over recent years there has been an increasing approval in Britain and elsewhere that children and
young people should be involved more in decision making which may affect them. Recent years
have seen an increase on the focus of children s rights which include ways of getting young people
and children involved more directly in decision making that impact their lives. In researchterms, this
has been mirrored in a linguistic shift from talking about research on to research with and now,
increasingly, to research by children and youngpeople (Kimmel, A.J., 1988).

The participation of Children and Young People (CYP) in research is placed within the
framework of an international rights based framework within which CYP were granted a right to

that all CYP who are competent of forming their own views, have a right to articulate those views

According to Robert Holmes (2006), the power dynamics between adults and children present an
important obstacle to the collection of high quality evidence from children. Of course, engagement
with children and young people is not always at an individual level. There are a variety of issues
to think about when engaging with young children. Children and young people may be shy around
unfamiliar adults, even at times even afraid, so it is important to find ways of making them feel
safe and secure. Explanations for adults having power over children and young people are willingly
established in materialistic and paternalistic declarations of looking out for the young children s
best interests, which is to protect them from harm. Most people including young children are in
agreement with the involvement of adults is necessary there are however some critics who question
this. Roberts, H. (2008) points out that power dynamics in children s participation are much messier
than is often explicated, and that power isn t something that children

Thomas Hobbes Argues That Reason Is Both A Cause Of War
Thomas Hobbes argues that reason is both a cause of war and a cause of peace. It is a cause of war
because reason obeys the law of nature and human exercise the right of nature rationally will
inevitably lead everyone to war. It is a cause of peace because the state of war is a bad place for
everyone to function the law of their nature. Thus reasonleads to a better but more vulnerable
conditional state that is the state of peace. In this paper, I will explain this dual role of reason in
Hobbes theory. I will do so by first explain what is the law of nature and what is the right of
nature, and how does reason obey the law of nature inevitably lead human to war. Then I will
explain the three rational laws that lead human to peace.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We fight to acquire what we desire, to defend what we have acquired or to acquire or defend our
reputation.
But in the states of war, we are not able to preserve our life well. Thus to preserve one s life,
reason makes human wants peace. The first law is saying: every man ought to endeavor peace,
as far as he has the hope of obtaining it, and when he can t obtain it, that he may seek and use all
help and advantages of war. Which means if possible, peace is a choice of reason.
However, making peace requires everyone to lay down parts of his rights. Thus we have the
second law claiming that in the state of peace, a man is willing, when others are willing too and
when the man is still able to defense himself, to lay down his right to all things and be content
with so much liberty against other men, as he would allow other men against himself. Hobbs
believes the only way to make peace is to lay down one s rights because as discussed in the
previous part: retain the right of nature inevitably leads to war. But one could only lay down his
rights while others are doing so as well because if he is the only one who is disarmed, he simply
made himself a prey to his armed competitors and will be taken advantage of, which is not allowed

My Philosophy Of My Personal Philosophy In The Classroom
All students are unique individuals, who have their own way of learning. Some students, might find
it easier to learn from hands on work rather than reading materials. Others, may be capable of
learning with just reading content. Since every student learns differently, I believe there isn t just
one philosophical way of how students should be taught. I would incorporate a couple different
philosophies and teachingmechanisms into my classroom. I also believe that the environment a
child is in impacts the way they learn. Students should have a set of rules to follow, but also be
able to express what they think and feel just as well. My personal philosophyis that there are
numerous ways to teach children the materials they need to know. Pragmatism is one philosophical
theory I will follow in my classroom. Since, this helps the development of practical knowledge, my
students will be able to apply some things in actual... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The students will have an opportunity on the first day of class to come up with some more they
think should be followed. The rules will be as follows: Number one, be on time for class. This
will help them throughout life just as much as in the classroom. No matter what, in life you
must be on time for certain things. In a workplace you have a schedule to follow. I believe
implementing certain rules early in life gives the opportunity for success and good work ethic.
Number two will be to complete all tasks in a timely manner. This sets them up for a good work
ethic also. If all tasks are completed on time for the whole class, I will reward them by having a
game day. Number three, no talking during tests. If students are talking during a test, then that
makes it hard to see if they need a different learning method to catch on to the material. The class
overall must follow all rules or there will be no reward handed

Childbirth During The Nineteenth Century Essay
The idea of childbirth has been viewed in three peculiar ways: a social natural occurrence, as a
passage to an early death, and in present times a medical procedure needed when having children. In
the seventieth and eighteenth century childbirth was seen as a social celebration conducted by
midwives, while in the nineteenth century fear of death arose due to an increase of maternal
mortality rates. This time period also served as a transition time between the elimination of the
midwife and the emergence of the physician. The transition was due to attitude changes and
knowledge understanding. During the twentieth century, medical knowledge expanded and thus the
idea of childbirthwas medicalized into a medical procedure needed to have healthy children.
Childbirth once seen as a natural phenomenon was now an event that needed medical attention by
health facilitators at institutions of health. The ideas around childbirth developed based on the
knowledge, cultural setting, mortality rates, and professionals available at the time. Based on these
ideas it is easy to see how social and behavioral aspects influenced childbirth throughout the
seventeenth, eighteenth, ninetieth and twentieth centuries. In addition, the communities views on
childbirth were influenced by the development of public healthinfrastructure, public health policy
advancement and how well public officials were able to disseminate information. In the colonial
era, the majority of women spent their lives

  • 2. Comparison of the Effectiveness Of Imagery in “ The Secret... While writing stories it is importing to keep in mind that readers should be able to picture the story in their mind while reading. It is best to use effective ways to explain or describe the point; such as, wording and writing format, in order to grab reader s attention and interest them. Referring to the readings The secret of Walter Mitty written by James Thurber, and Bartleby the scrivener written by Melville, both have been written in a great effective way for readers to use their imagery and develop the ideas of what the story is about. Providing that, both stories have described the character and setting with enough details to be effective imagery for readers. Understanding the story and the main characters requires a suitable description of characteristic and personality of people in the story. Therefore, both stories have introduced the characters with a brief description to leave a picture of the characters in readers head. In reading The secret of Walter Mitty, Walter Mitty has been described as a middle age man who has trouble handling mechanical tasks, forgets mostly everything easily, and someone who is a daydreamer. This description of Walter Mitty gives readers a picture of a man who may not be able to work very well and may not have a strong memory. But, daydreams of having great times to forget and not to worry about his sad moments and his disability. Someone who wants to stay happy and tries to make his life interested and joyful the way he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Liberal News Media Analysis News sources are networks where many people are informed about important news event. Being liberal bias about news networks is to be open to new opinions about an event and sometimes can be given false information or misinterpretation about it. Having a conservative view about the news is still having to hold to certain beliefs and values and being cautious about what changes are happening. Many people get news from the six powers house news networks that are either liberal or conservative. CBS, ABC, and NBC were the only news networks, since 1948, where people were able to get the recent news happening and are now considered the mainstream news channels which also have a liberal view about the news. CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC are the news networks that run in cable tv and are considered ultra... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These cable news started in the 1980s because the mainstream news did not get all the information out and were not telling the whole truth. Later in 1996, FOX News started and became really popular because of being both liberal and conservative and were considered the truth seekers. FOX News decided to become a news network because since all the other six news networks were not telling the whole truth, Fox decided to get the information and tell the truth without lying and getting everything out. Before cable news, the mainstream news networks were the only channels where many people get the news. All three news networks talk about the same event happening currently, but not all will have the same details and have different information and sometimes that information is not truth or correct because these news sources want to be the first ones to get the news on air for people to view and at times leave out the main focus of the occurrence. ABC, CBS, and NBC are liberal bias and at times misinterpreted the news and give false information. According to an online timeline of the television in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sexual Harassment In The Military Essay Over the last several years the Canadian Military has come under considerable pressure to appropriately deal with the moral issue of sexual harassment and assault of women within its sphere. The Canadian media has given a number of reports during this time that have attacked military leaders for their failure to bring about constructive change. The moral issue of how women are treated in the militaryis of upmost importance; however I have chosen to write on the moral issue of honesty and accuracy in news reporting. Was the media honest and accurate in its reporting when it constantly used a news byte from a recent interview with General Tom Lawson, leader of the Canadian Armed Forces? The news byte being considered gave a detrimental or slanted view of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reaction to the newsbyte from women s groups, the House of Commons and the general public was swift with calls for General Lawson to immediately resign, despite the fact that he is due to retire this autumn. The full interview: Canada s military chief says sex assaults continue to be a problem in the Canadian Forces because, we re biologically wired in a certain way. Appearing Tuesday on CBC s The National, Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Tom Lawson said that sexual harassment and assaults continue to plague the military because men are biologically predisposed to force themselves on women. It s a terrible issue, it s one that disturbs the great majority of everyone in uniform and yet, we re still dealing with it, Lawson said. • 5. An Analysis Of Elie Wiesel s The Jewish Scriptures Set in early 1930 s Sighet, Elie Wiesel is expected to do as he is told and continue to further his studies in the Jewish scriptures. Young Elie becomes intrigued by the vast amount of knowledge he has absorbed over his youthful fifteen years, and determined to verse himself in Kabballah, a more intense and deeper branch of the holy texts. Going against his father s word, he dives into the water, swimming into depths uncharted by all Sighet boys his age. One day, in his search for intellect, Wiesel met a man, worn by age, and wised by life. Moishe the Beadle he said he went by. The two shared a special passion for Kabballah. Upon meeting the Beadle, Elie began to extend his learning. Time progressed until Moishe the Beadle vanished with no word. Days later he came back in a state quite unexplainably poor. The man was sad and scared out of his mind, but it was the worry and the concern that had spoken to Elie and the villagers. It was his worrisome and concerned voiced that pleaded everyone to listen. To heed his advice and run. Run far and wide. Run, and don t stop. Run until they reached a safe haven. The boy cried wolf but the villagers did not seize to listen, not even once. Little did they know what fate had in store for them. Finally, the monsters and creatures crawled out of the darkness of the Beadle s imagination. • 6. Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address The pattern of the prodigal is: rebellion, ruin, repentance, reconciliation, restoration (Edwin Louis Cole). Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address is a speech that highlights every point in Cole s quote. He, Lincoln, talks about how the south manages to rebel, how their economy will be left in ruin, how they will repent and be forgiven by both God and the North, how the North and the South will reconcile, and finally he talks of how the nation will move on to restoration. Abraham Lincolns Second Inaugural Address emphasizes the reconciliation of a torn apart nation by appealing to pathos, logos, and ethos and by using diction to appeal to the listener s emotion. The American Civil Warbegan on April 12, 1861 when the Southern United States seceded from the union. The first battle, taking only thirty four hours, caused Lincoln to officially rally troops against the South. Most Northern Americans would eventually learn to love Lincoln s courage; however, many Southern Americans would despise Lincoln. Throughout the civil war many lives were lost, and many families were torn apart. Lincoln would remain a strong figure throughout the war. He would give his people hope, he would give his people courage, and he would give his people strength. Around the time the Civil War was drawing to a close, Lincoln was being reelected. • 12. Language In Rabbit Proof Fence Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated properly. Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australias history. Many aboriginal children didn t want to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof Fence has been created from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has created many representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual elements and the audio components. The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs, Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that they were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she didn t want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had no authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary. It was used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. Through the sexual assault scene, we establish that Dolly has lost all the innocence she once endured. As a result of this loss, she matures and transforms into who she becomes. This is shown through Harrison s use of symbolism. When Dolly s clothes are stripped off her, this shows essentially the stripping away of her innocence. From this we see that she is no longer a young girl, but a woman. We see this in the the way she defies Jungi. Through Dolly s discovery and transformation, her emotional state is threatened, thus causing her ultimate change. This concept of Dolly s loss of innocence transforming into a growth of maturity implies that growth is compulsory as a result of a loss or significant event in an individual s life. In moving on from these experiences, the discoveries can be provoked and have the ability to open the eyes of individuals. Self Concept also branches out into self image and self esteem. Self image, is the way the person pictures itself. The self esteem is the way we evaluate ourselves. We identify ourselves by our communication, and our interactions with others. In other words I think, therefore I am (RenГ© Descartes; ego cogito, ergo sum ) If a person was to tell another person what they think they look like, odds are that that person may view himself as what the other person thinks/views him as. This kind of life is the only one he has ever known but, dreams stir within him. When his son gets the part of a legendary Haitian revolutionary in the school play, Guy s idealism begins to beat up against the reality of his situation causing this loving father and husband to become increasingly weary of life. Guy s idealism shows itself most boldly in his obsession with the balloon. His obsession is so great that During the day when the field was open, Guy would walk up to the basket [of the balloon], staring at it with the same kind of longing that most men display when they admire very pretty girls (370). What s more is that he honestly believes that from somewhat distant observation, he could pilot the balloon if given the chance, even though it is a job that requires several people (373, 376). In the field with his wife, Guy makes a plea for her to understand his infatuation with the balloon which is actually an intense desire for escape. Children and young people may be shy around unfamiliar adults, even at times even afraid, so it is important to find ways of making them feel safe and secure. Explanations for adults having power over children and young people are willingly established in materialistic and paternalistic declarations of looking out for the young children s best interests, which is to protect them from harm. The first law is saying: every man ought to endeavor peace, as far as he has the hope of obtaining it, and when he can t obtain it, that he may seek and use all help and advantages of war. Which means if possible, peace is a choice of reason. However, making peace requires everyone to lay down parts of his rights. Thus we have the second law claiming that in the state of peace, a man is willing, when others are willing too and when the man is still able to defense himself, to lay down his right to all things and be content with so much liberty against other men, as he would allow other men against himself. Hobbs believes the only way to make peace is to lay down one s rights because as discussed in the previous part: retain the right of nature inevitably leads to war. But one could only lay down his rights while others are doing so as well because if he is the only one who is disarmed, he simply made himself a prey to his armed competitors and will be taken advantage of, which is not allowed by reason. • 42. Childbirth During The Nineteenth Century Essay The idea of childbirth has been viewed in three peculiar ways: a social natural occurrence, as a passage to an early death, and in present times a medical procedure needed when having children. In the seventieth and eighteenth century childbirth was seen as a social celebration conducted by midwives, while in the nineteenth century fear of death arose due to an increase of maternal mortality rates. This time period also served as a transition time between the elimination of the midwife and the emergence of the physician. The transition was due to attitude changes and knowledge understanding. During the twentieth century, medical knowledge expanded and thus the idea of childbirthwas medicalized into a medical procedure needed to have healthy children. Childbirth once seen as a natural phenomenon was now an event that needed medical attention by health facilitators at institutions of health. The ideas around childbirth developed based on the knowledge, cultural setting, mortality rates, and professionals available at the time. Based on these ideas it is easy to see how social and behavioral aspects influenced childbirth throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, ninetieth and twentieth centuries. In addition, the communities views on childbirth were influenced by the development of public healthinfrastructure, public health policy advancement and how well public officials were able to disseminate information.
