Biblical Allusions In The Metamorphosis
What led to Gregor Samsa s tragic end? In the novel, The Metamorphosis by Franz
Kafka, published in 1915, a young man named Gregor Samsa wakes up one day,
only to find that he has gone through a very shocking physical transformation into a
human sized bug. Throughout The Metamorphosis, Gregor s family basically
disowns him, and he begins to feel like a burden to them, so he decides something
needs to change for them, and for him, death is the only option. One of the literary
elements in this novel is the incorporation of biblical allusions. The first example,
is when Gregor is hidden away and shunned by his family, this can be looked at as
a biblical reference to Gregor s situation, when Jesus is turned against by his
followers. The second, and most prominent example of biblical allusion is the role
that the apple plays in the plot. The apple can be interpreted as the same Biblical
fruit, from the tree of knowledge. Lastly, when Gregor cannot move from the pain
after an apple is wedged in his back, he states that he feels nailed in place (Kafka 52).
This is just like Jesus, and how he was nailed to the cross.
After Gregor s transformation, his family only sees him as a bug, they do not see
the Gregor who is a person, and a part of their family, anymore. Thus, his family
does not let Gregor come out of his room. The family does not know what to do

civilization on three levels: family, city, and cosmos of gods. To achieve this goal,
we will look into Bacchae by Euripides, and Oresteia by Aeschylus. Bacchae shows

SnowBowl has proposed to do just that; make artificial snow on their ski resort. The
proposal is for their own economical benefit with no respect for the holy San
Francisco Peaks, where the Ski resort is located.
The San Francisco Peaks are located in Northern Arizona, seven miles outside of

The San Francisco Peaks are a sacred place to thirteen tribes in Northern Arizona. The
tribes go up to the mountain for religious beliefs and prayers. Specifically, the tribes
pray to the rain gods. If snow machines are put on the mountain, that would defeat
the purpose in praying for rain. The holiness of the peaks would be lost for the
Native Americans, knowing that their prayers are disrespected by the Arizona
SnowBowl.
The habitat and ecosystem of the San Francisco Peaks is rare. The Mountains are
located in the middle of the desert. The vegetation on the mountain is uncommon.
The addition of snow machines and remodeling of ski runs would greatly change
the terrain of the mountain. In order to put new ski runs and snow machines on the
mountain many impacting preliminary events must happen first. One major event
would be the removal of trees for the new ski runs and piping for the snow
machines. The trees that will be cut are on the edge of a wilderness area, which is
out of bounds for skiing. This means people will be more inclined to ski in out of
bounds areas. Also, a gigantic water pipe will be run from the Rio De Flag water
treatment plant to the upper parts of the mountain. This will involve digging trenches,
cutting trees, and using heavy machinery. All of these actions will forever impact the

This monument was created in order to commemorate the civilians lives lost
during the Salvadoran Civil War. The monument was made to resemble the
Vietnam Memorial; it is made of black granite and has in scripted the names of the
war victims. However, the monument only has in scripted the names of 30,000 of
the 75,000 war victims. The names are organized in alphabetical order. It is 85 feet
long and 15 feet tall. The monument also has the name of the massacres that took
place during the war such as La Masacre del Izote in which an entire town was
burned down and 10,000 civilians were killed. The project begun in 1994 and it was
finished in 2003. The monument was made to pay the government s moral debt to the
population, as stated by the current president of El Salvador. It is meant to be a
symbol of memory and reconciliation. However, the reconciliation aspect of it can be
debatable because it requires the forgiveness for all the lives that were lost during the
war and the horrific circumstances citizens were subject to. The question whether or
not the goal of the monument was met is challenged by forgiving means forgetting

The Day Of My Meditation Practice
It is now the 8th day of my meditation practice. I can t believe how far I have come
since the first day. I was already addicted to the feeling and idea of meditation. I was
surprised at how clear my mind was today before I began my mantra recitation. As
always, I felt the tension in my body fade away as I got into my meditative practice.
At the end of today s session I felt really good!
I sat on my bed and got comfortable before beginning my meditative practice today. I
started off with concentrating on my breathing before reciting my mantra. I felt my
body relax. I was surprise at the feeling of ease and relation mediation was providing
to me. I feel very good about this practice.
Today I decided to do something a little different. Instead of repeating my mantra in
my head using my own voice, I decided to listen to an audio playing of the mantra. I
sat on my bed and got comfortable before putting on my ear buds on and playing the
mantra. It felt different listening to someone else s voice, however I did enjoy it. I
found myself more easily being able to concentrate on the mantra, without having to
think about the words. I felt my body relax and I enjoyed the sensation that was
running through my bones.
Once again, I choose to opt to listen to the audio playing of my mantra. I sat down
and concentrated on my breathing before hitting play. I enjoyed listening to
someone else s voice, it was oddly very calming. At the end of my session, I felt very
joyful. I hoped to

hypertension with age. Left untreated, hypertension can result in retinopathy,
cardiomyopathy, and stroke with the most common cause of death being coronary
artery disease. The diagnoses of hypertension is primarily done by the monitoring of
blood pressure with multiple readings of systolic pressure greater than 140 mmHg
and diastolic pressure greater than 90 mmHg indicating stage one hypertension1,2.
The evaluation of the eyes, heart, thyroid, and renal system are also important in
understanding the cause and extent of hypertension. Initial treatment involves
lifestyle and diet modifications such as exercise, smoking, cessation, and limited

blood pressure greater than 160/100 mmHg are recommended by the American Heart

because cursive is a lost art, an important mode of communication, and cursive

Even though people are going digital there still needs to be a hard paper copy to go
along with everything. There are so many artifacts that are written in cursive that
if a person does not know how to read cursive then they will not get the enjoyment
of the artifact. First, there continues to be a need to sign hard copies of documents.
There is a sense of ceremony and a seriousness of purpose about the act of signing
something (Klose 1). If a student needed to sign something, then they cannot simply
print their name. They need to be able to actually sign their name in cursive. When

United States is recorded in handwritten documents, including personal letters. There
is nothing like seeing, and, if opportunity permits, touching, actual source material

unlikely that one will be able to read it (Klose 1). Getting to touch and feel how the
pen moved across the paper while writing cursive is a great opportunity. Students who
cannot read or write cursive will definitely have a disadvantage in life because then
they cannot read things that other people can read. Handwritten documents were
written in cursive because that is the way people were taught to write. Why do people

The placebo effect is the reaction a patient has to a substance that is believed to be
medication. The New Medical Dictionary in 1785 referred to a placebo to be a
common place method or medicine. Before that, people would believe anything
would heal them, if it worked in the slightest way possible. For example, Elisha
Perkins s Perkins Tractors. Some physicians believe that deceiving a patient is
unethical and do not participate in studies that contain placeboresearch. The placebo
effect has been studied by a lot of well recognized people. The same conclusion has
been drawn for years, that the placebo effect is simply replies in one s mind. In
1796, Elisha Perkins invented pointers made of alloys used to extract pain and
reduce inflammation (Miller 1935). Since he saw how popular the Perkins
Tractors were, John Haygarth decided to conduct an experiment. In 1799, just a
few years after the Perkins Tractors were introduced, Haygarth made his own
version of the Perkins Tractor (Booth 2005). The Perkins Tractor was somewhat
pricey, so Haygarth chose to make his tractor affordable (Booth 2005). Haygarth s
tractor was made out of wood and still advertised the same effects of the Perkins
Tractor (Booth 2005). Haygarth found that if the patient believed that a simple
tractor, whether made of wood or metal alloys, would cure their inflammation or pain,

Equality can be measured through various measures to understand the magnitude
or scale of it social scientists use various techniques to examine and deduce the
level of equality. The level of equality varies drastically across the globe, in one of
the most unequal societies in generations. According to equality human rights

In doing so, some fundamental conclusions can be drawn pertaining to the eventual
succession of Christianity over stoic thought. Christianity and Stoicism: Logic,
Physics, and Ethics
In terms of logic, Christianity can be understood in three parts. Initially, there is
the undeniable doctrine of the Trinity, which teaches that God, as revealed in the
Old and New Testaments, actually exists in three persons. In essence, God is the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all at once. However, Jesus is not the Father,
nor is he the Holy Spirit; He is separate, and yet they are all God. Mathematically
this makes no sense. If one considers that God=A, God=B, and God=C, it logically
follows that A=B=C. An intellectually honest person questions if the Trinity is truly
logic at all. As a matter of fact, this particular dogma has no true Biblical origin.
The concept of the Trinity does not even arise until the formation of the Nicene
Creed (Metzger 90). This is interesting to note though, for it was primarily used to
falsify the so called heretical systems that rivaled it (Metzger 782). A second main
tenant of Christian logic is the idea that the Bible is inerrant. In other words, all
scripture is God breathed, and as such, what is written was done so in accordance
