Case Study Of The Royal Dutch Petroleum Company
Case Study
Background
In 1907, the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company of the Netherlands and the Shell Transport and Trading
Company of the United Kingdom were mergered and became Shell Company ( The Beginnings
shell.com, 2015). Before the merger of the two companies, the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company was
a Holland Corporation, founded in 1890, and mainly engaged in oil field development. The shell
transportation and trading company is a British company was founded in 1897 by Marcus Samuel, in
1833 shell expanded import and sale of sea shells (Forsyth, 2011). At the beginning, one of them in
Hague was responsible for manufacture and production, while another one in London was responsible
for the transportation and storage of products. Then, in the World War I, Shell made many
contributions. It was the fuel supplier of the British army and the sole supplier of aviation fuel ( The
early 20th century shell.com, 2015). Since 2005, Shell has officially united and become a dual listed
company, now their business as many as 70 countries. Right now, Royal Dutch Shell is the world s
sixth largest oil and gas company. ( Shell at a glance . Royal Dutch Shell plc., 2010)
Strengths
There are two important strengths which give Shell more advantages than other big oil companies.
First, Shell has a diversified geographical location. Shell is a multinational enterprise. Therefore, the
regional diversification can helps Shell mitigate the risks of over reliance on a particular market.

Eharmony Examination
What kind of a platform business is the online personals market? What kind of network effects (direct,
cross sided, positive, and negative) does it leverage? How structurally attractive is it? The online
personals market is a specific niche of social networking, and it is a sole sponsor, proprietary platform
business. In terms of network effects, it could be seen as a one sided network (users can instigate an
interaction, or can have someone else instigate an interaction with them), but is better described as a
two sided market with men on one side, and women on the other (with the exception of homosexual
sites which are clearly one sided markets). Within this, there are both direct and cross sided network
effects. For direct, there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The company creates value by doing a lot of the work for its clients. While the initial time investment
(45 minutes) may be longer than the traditional model, it then provides the service of searching
through the millions of potential matches. This not only proves to be a more accurate way to find
dates, but also saves a great deal of time (where most online daters spend a 7 times as much time
searching for a partner as they do interacting). And for men, who are usually fighting over a scarcity
of women, they benefit from the majority percentage of women who have become the core of
eHarmony s paid customers. Thus the value proposition for the customer is: better matches (and better
quality people) with a much smaller time commitment. The customers who benefit most from this are
people who are serious about finding a person for a long term relationship (rather than those who are
just browsing, or hoping to have flings with as many people as possible). With eHarmony s superior
product, we can calculate that their competitive advantage (WTP Cost)eHarmony (WTP
Cost)Chemistry. In this case, eHarmony s average price (of the four options) is $37.45 versus $34.14
for Chemistry, demonstrating the increased WTP of their customers. Further, their advertising strategy
(avoiding costly broadcast networks in favor of more cost effective national cable buys) has helped to
keep costs down

Scientific Revolution Enlightenment
Is it possible for a revolution to occur overnight? No. A Revolution is the wish to overthrow a
government or social belief to achieve a new political or belief system in the course of several years.
These revolts or breakthroughs tend to occur when the essential needs of the common people are not
being met. Between 1500 1800 in Europe, literature also reflected historical events including famous
romantic novels such as Frankenstein and A Tale of Two Cities. For my Winter Trimester Final in
Revolutions in Thought, I chose to represent revolutions by creating a tree where each revolution was

Revolution s discoveries would benefit the Enlightenment Period. ... Show more content on

During the Enlightenment Period, philosophers questioned what is truth along with how to break free
from tutelage, instructions or learning from others. When the poor people looked at the way France
was being run, they questioned why the upper class was not being taxed as heavily as themselves. In
these secret meetings, a group of men entitled the National Constituent Assembly created the
Declaration of Men which stated Men are born and remain free and equal in rights (National
Constituent Assembly). This was the first document of its kind where all people could be created equal
no matter what class. Rich and poor would pay equal taxes and be given the same respect by the
government. This document would later become the first step toward writing a new constitution for
France. Sixty years after the French Revolution was completed, Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two
Cities, which reflected the French Revolution with characters from both France and England.
Throughout the book, Dickens makes reference to the comparison of wine verses blood and how this
symbolized the revolution itself. This comparison is shown when Dickens states The time was to
come, when that wine too would be spilled on the street stones, and when the stain of it would be red
upon many there (Dickens 22). In this quote, Dickens hints at the lethal mistakes in the revolutionaries

The Doctrine Of Predestination
The Doctrine of Predestination is one potential answer to the question of how individuals come to a
saving faith in Christ. Although he did not invent the Doctrine of Predestination, John Calvin has often
been considered its figurehead since the Reformation. This doctrine is defined as the divine decree
according to which certain persons are infallibly guided to eternal salvation. On the other side of the
argument is Arminianism. This view states the Christ died for all of humanity rather than just an elect
percentage. The Arminianist argument states that God s divine sovereignty is compatible with the free
will of humanity. C.S. Lewis argued for and defended the Arminian view. Both sides can present
biblical passages to support their arguments. The fact that the Bible is inconclusive on the matter is
ultimately the source of this dispute. While either Calvin or Lewis could be correct, the truth is likely
an amalgamation of the two.
Although the Bible is ambiguous on the topic of predestination versus free will, one will find a case
for the Doctrine of Predestination in the scriptures. In the Bible, God uses individuals and people
groups to fulfill plans for the world. Noah, for example, was chosen to survive the flood and continue
humanity. God called Abraham from Ur to father the Nation of Israel, God s chosen people in His plan
to redeem creation. In Jeremiah 1:5, the case for predestination is particularly strong when God spoke
to Jeremiah, telling him, before I

The Atmosphere and The Ozone Layer
The atmosphere is an amazing creation. It contains many things that help make this world a place
where we can live. The atmosphere contains ozone. That helps protect our skin from harmful sun rays.
Many layers make up our atmosphere. There are five main layers, the troposphere, stratosphere,
mesosphere, thermosphere, and lastly the exosphere. Each layer has a different purpose. Clouds are
located in the atmosphere and are a big part of the water cycle. There are different types of clouds and
they all have different effects. Conduction and convection also play a big part in how we live our lives
today.
Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Without ozone, our
skin would burn from the suns radiation. Ozone can be either good or bad for your health. It depends
on the location of it in the atmosphere. It can also be bad for the environment. When ozone is near the
ground it is considered very dangerous. During the hot summer months ozone levels should be
monitored. In the summer, more harmful ozone concentrations are in the air we use. Inhaling ozone
can be very dangerous to our health. It can cause a number of health problems. Scientists are figuring
out ways to help keep the air clean and people and the environment healthy. (1)
There are many different layers in the atmosphere, five actually. The layer closest to the earth s surface
is the troposphere. The troposphere is again the very

A Research Study On Breastfeeding
Case study: breastfeeding
Breast feeding rates in developed countries such as the UK, Australia and the US are typically lower
than World Health Organisation goals Parkinson (2010) 3. From a study carried out by Queensland
university stressed the importance of not only the delivery of literature on how effective breastfeeding
is for your babies health but that what was also needed to increase the number of breast feeders was to
give personal support and explains social and environmental benefits also. When they looked at the
UK in particular, Parkinson (2010) 3 stated women already understood that breastfeeding was good
for their baby, and what they needed were the tools to help them to breastfeed longer. From this it is
clear that although effective and sufficient information around the benefits of the child is being
addressed, there is no sufficient information or skills being given direct to the parents in order for
them to carry this out for any length of time. Another piece of research was carried out in 2010 on
ways to change the paradigm of breastfeeding, from encouraging promotion of breast feeding within
the employment setting. Dr Lawrence (2010) 1 said instead of promoting the tremendous benefits of
breastfeeding to this population, the risks of formula feeding and the costs to health and the
community of not breastfeeding will have to incorporated into persuading these women to do the best
for their infants and themselves .

Wildlife Progression
In the late 1800 s and early 1900 s there were a lot of things going on in the United States. New laws
were being formed about child labor, women started standing up for themselves and demanding tights
and just in general people started to realize that if they wanted something to change that they had to
speak up to make a difference. As cities became more crowded, people started to look for peace in
their chaotic lives. Before this time period, not many people valued the true beauty of the western
United States and all of its beautiful scenery.
Many explorers that have gone west have discovered wonderful things. New plants, rivers, mountains
and many new creatures were among the things that they discovered. In 1857 when S.H. Hammond
writes a book explaining the outdoors as a retreat from everyday life, that was the first time that
people started to value our nation s great resources. After this book was published, many other books
were published by different authors all saying the same thing. We have to preserve our nation s
wildlife for our future generations to enjoy. If we are ignorant and destroy what we have, our nation s
lands will never be the same. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Economic, Military and Political Power of the Union...
The economic, military, and political power of the Union was much greater than the Confederacy.
Still, the war did go on for four years. The Confederacy demonstrated itself strong many times.
Throughout the war the struggles continuously shifted, and because of that, so did the economic,
military, and political strength of both sides. Although both sides saw accomplishments of military
successes, at the end of the war, the bigger economy of the north, centralized government and
overpowering manpower would eventually lead to a northern victory. In 1863, it was up in the air
because either the Union or the Confederacy could have won the war, but the Confederacy did not
have enough manpower to outlast the Union in a drawn out war. The Union was seemingly far more
advanced in terms of industrialization compared to the South. The North was in control of about 80%
of United States industry (McPherson, 24). Also, most of the Confederate industry was not located in
the Deep South but rather the Upper South, mostly in Virginia. After Deleware, West Virginia,
Kentucky and Maryland joind the Uninion, the Confederacy continued to lose large amounts of
possible industry and manpower. The Confederacy lost these states due to the clever politics of the
North such as the state of Maryland, as it was to the opposition within certain states such as West
Virginia. With the loss of these four states the confederate industry would start to decline and could
not compete with the industry in the

The Depositional Environment, Petrology, Mineralogy,...
The purpose of this paper is to explain the depositional environment, petrology, mineralogy, structure,
exploration, technology, methods of extraction and processing, as well as the applications and
economics of oil in the Greater Green River Basin. This paper will mainly focus on the oil shale
within the basin but will also touch on some of the more conventional oil and gas plays as well.
According to Crawford and Killen (2010), Oil Shale is defined as being a sedimentary rock embedded
with organic material called kerogen... and has not been under the necessary heat, pressure, and/or
depth for the right length of time to form crude oil . Oil shale is typically found in silica and carbonate
based rocks that are usually no greater than 900 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the United States current demand for oil at roughly 20 million barrels per day, this resource
could potential last for another 400 years. These types of numbers suggest that if low cost production
methods can be developed and used effectively to recover the oil, the economic benefits would be
great. In the following paper I intend to give clear and succinct information on how oil shale was
deposited in the Greater Green River Basin, what it is made of, what was the maturation history of the
shale, how the oil is recovered from very impermeable sedimentary units, how economics will play a
role in its future as a reliable energy source, as well as the environmental impact of oil production in
the basin.
Structure of the Greater Green River Basin
The Greater Green River Basin is a basin located in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The mountains
that surround the basin are the Wind River Mountains and Granite Mountains (Sweetwater Arch) to
the north, the Uinta Mountains to the south, the Wyoming thrust belt to the west, and the Sierra Madre
Mountains and the Rawlins Uplift to the East. The Great Green River Basin is further subdivided into
sub basins as mentioned earlier by intrabasinal anticlines. The largest anticline occupies the central
portion of the basin and nearly separates the basin into equal east and west segments. There are also
several other anticlinal

Rationalism
Rationalism In Plato s Meno it begins with a debate between a fictional Socrates and Meno about
whether virtue can be taught or if it is acquired in another way. Socrates begins to prove his point
when he asks the slaves about the geometry question. When the slave answers the question, Socrates
suggests to Meno that they inquire this together. Meno argues with his Meno s Paradox that, one
logically cannot inquire productivity into what one does not already know (Meno 58). Then Socrates
continues to make Meno question his own beliefs when the slave recognizes the answer to geometrical
problem. Socrates proceeds to confirm with the concept that the sole is immortal and the slave was
recollecting knowledge that the soul already had. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes goes through valid and well thought out arguments to come to find realizations. He
concentrates on knowledge rather than action. In the Third Meditation, Descartes continues to
introduce the idea that God is innate. Descartes introduces the role of God in the Third Meditation. He
suggests that you can use your intuition, but you can t use time or senses. Descartes uses the
teleological argument to show innate things. It consists of teleological intuition which has two caused
principles. One is that everything has a cause with at least as much reality as it has itself. The other
principle is that everything with objective reality has a cause with formal reality. Objective realities
are things like images and ideas, and formal reality is the kind of reality it has by virtue. There are
infinite and finite substances which are both types of formal reality. Finite substances cause properties,
but the properties depend on the finite substances for their existence, but infinite substances don t
depend on anything at all. There are certain standards the infinite and finite substances must have to
have an idea of an idea mind such as, God. Through this argument, Descartes is trying to introduce the
idea that God is innate. Descartes and Plato s arguments all did come to the conclusion that knowledge
was an innate. Both philosophers believe that you can come to realizations of the truth. Plato believes
that you have the concept to begin with

Why A Penny Is The United States Government Should...
Say Goodbye to the Penny There is a good chance that when an item is purchased, change will be
given back. It is also very likely that the change included multiple pennies. These pennies will then
proceed to be left in a pocket and forgotten, never to be used again because their purchasing power is
non existent. The United States government should discontinue the manufacturing of pennies. Pennies
do not serve the primary role of currency anymore. Also, pennies are uneconomical to produce and
waste taxpayers money by lining the pockets of corporations. Lastly, many other countries have
discontinued the production of their cent pieces with no negative impact. To understand why a penny
does not fulfill its role as currency anymore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the use of fiat currency, many governments backed the value of the currency with
gold. For a while, thirty five United States Dollars could be traded for 1 Troy ounce of gold at a bank.
Today however, the USD is no longer backed by gold. Most money today is just worthless paper , and
if the government endorsing that money fails, it turns that currency into useless paper. (This is causes
hyperinflation and recently happened to the Zimbabwean dollar.)
All of this ties back into the original problem with pennies. Fiat currency cannot itself be worth more
than the value it is given. It would make absolutely no sense to take a dollar worth of gold and make it
into a 50 cent coin. If this was done, people would just use the coin as gold, not the 50 cent piece it
was supposed to be. When the material fiat money is made out of is worth more than the government
proclaimed value, the purpose of that currency has failed and it has turned back into commodity
currency. A penny currently costs 1.8 cents to make. That 1.8 cent chuck of metal is then assigned a
value of 1 cent. It is unthinkable to lose .8 cents for every penny manufactured. This is just like the
aforementioned example where a dollar worth of gold was made into a 50 cent coin. When quarters
and dimes used to be made out of silver, and the price of silver started to rise, the silver content in
coins was reduced so

Pluto And Sun Comparison
Being asked to compare my mother with my father is like being asked to compare Pluto with the Sun.
Both completely separate entities consisting of elements antagonistic to each other. Each containing
their own distinct atmosphere and climate: each having their own characteristic qualities that affect the
life surrounding them or subsequent lack thereof. To be quite honest, I don t understand how two
people that are so fundamentally different could have ever fallen in love, fallen into each other s orbit
rather. Polar opposites each on the respective opposite of the perceived solar system. Pulled together
by gravity, yet when found close together they seemed to wear on each other. They were two entirely

Their polarity suggests as if their relationship was like the Sun was slowly engulfing Pluto into its
gravity. Coexistence was not an option, not a possibility. Thus came their inevitable, fateful, grand
end.
Like the sun, my mother s appearance is bright, recognizable and captivating. Her beauty can be seen
from great lengths and not easily circumvented. Thankfully, I take after her.
Fortunately for me, I did not inherit any of my father s aberrant or a symmetrical physical attributes.
To best describe him I would recommend visualizing something ogre like. Most importantly, their role
in my universe has always been entirely different. Their characteristic qualities have been the defining
factors in how they affect and influence the lives surrounding them. My mother s all encompassing
love, compassion and support has always been present. She is essential to the life surrounding her, she
sustains the needs of those within her gravity. She, as the Sun, has always been close to my earthly
realm always within reach.
Pluto, being so distant, is non essential. It is incapable of affecting Earth from such a far distance;
Pluto is in no way necessary for

What Is The Beethoven Crisis
When Beethoven made a debut as a composer, he was writing a work that was bright and vibrant
faithful to the classical style, without being bothered by ear disorders. It is pointed out that this style is
under the strong influence of Haydn and Mozart. The first crisis in 1802 is the spiritual crisis that
wrote the will. Beethoven escaped this crisis by rediscovering the form of the Viennese classical
school. In other words, rather than the predecessors of the two Viennese classicalists, emphasis was
placed on the development and development and transformation of the motive as a material, pursuing
formal and constructive things. After this is called the middle term, succeeded in expanding the

Comparison Of The Book And Alice In Wonderland
Comparison of Alice in Wonderland Book and Movie Alice s Adventures in Wonderland written by
Lewis Caroll was originally published on November 26, 1865. On the other hand, the movie version,
directed by Clyde Geronimo, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske and produced by Walt Disney, was
published in 1951. Carroll s book has twelve chapters and begins by describing a girl who named
Alice that falls down a hole and finds herself in wonderland. In comparison, the movie begins with a
scene not included in the book in which Alice sings about her world, foreshadowing wonderland. In
the beginning, the versions are similar. Alice follows the rabbit because she is bored with her sister
who only wants to read books with pictures. When she follows the rabbit, Alice finds herself in a
different world. The difference is that in the book when Alice comes to the place, she finds the rabbit
and follows him until she sees many doors. In the movie, however, the door talks to her instead. In the
movie Mrs. Doorknob never appears, but the door has magic and gives her a potion bottle and box on
the table. Conversely, in the book the bottle and box are already there. Because she didn t see the two
things, they appear after she talks to the door and he works his magic, and she drinks the potion to
become smaller so she can enter the door. In the second chapter, there are several differences. In the
book Alice feels so desperate that she was ready to ask help from

Burning Of Our House, By Anne Bradstreet
During the height of Puritan times, Anne Bradstreet writes Upon the Burning of Our House. Jonathan
Edwards, another writer of these times, also writes the sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
as well. With strong connecting imagery to their listeners, both these writings portray the religious
views to their way of life. As she stood in front of her once burning home, Bradstreet wrote here stood
that trunk and there that chest...under the roof no guest shall sit... Bradstreet uses imagery to describe
that her house is completely burned to the ground and that her once flourishing home can no longer
house her or her guests. The bow of God s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and
justice bends the arrow at your heart , Edward s wrote his sermon to poise fear into one s heart just

The Between China Vs. American Child Nurturing Essay
care nurturing differs between China compared to American child nurturing. What are the differences?
The focus is on values, punishment, actions, and education. Values help mold the culture and shows
how the parent chooses to bring their children up in society. Child care differences show us habits,
morals, and the intentions of a child in these cultures which have different effects. We can compare
childhood, adolescence, and maturity.
Self conduct and child nurturing differences In American and Chinese culture self conduct is used to
teach children. In the Chinese culture they practice Guan, which is to educate, care, control, support
and love. They follow Confucianism, which is criticism to encourage to push them to gain social
values. Confucianism is a strict action that is practiced. China continues to make every effort to reach
for success. China has high values for individualism and respect of adolescents to others. China
always looks toward the future and never lets any short interests interfere with that which they praise
and are valued ideas in which made China a secure society and held together for thousands of years.
China s stable society is payable to the way they obey to their future commitments established by

The Grounds Of The Arena
Taxpayer can also bring a claim against the owner of the arena, the City of Milwaukee, for failing to
maintain the arena in a reasonably safe condition for spectators. Generally, the owner of a sports
venue must use reasonable care to protect spectators from the harm that exists due to the sports event.
However, extent of protection depends on the venue and the inherent risks of the sport. For example,
determining if a golf course is in a reasonably safe condition includes considering its design,
protections for spectators, and the manner in which the coarse is operated. In baseball it is generally
accepted that owners of stadiums owe a duty to protect spectators seating behind home plate and on
the baseline from foul balls. Further, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, it is likely that the safe place statute would be applied to it. Additionally, spectators at
the game, like those at a baseball game, will likely be found as frequenters. Thus, the City of
Milwaukee probably owed a duty to keep the arena as reasonably safe as possible under Wisconsin s
safe place statute.
Under the safe place statute, Taxpayer can make several claims that the City of Milwaukee was
negligent in maintaining the course. First, Taxpayer can assert that the City failed in their duty to warn
spectators of the risks of an errant ball. However, the National Basketball Association ( NBA ), the
largest professional basketball in the world, does not require arena owners to warn spectators of the
risks for attending a basketball game, particularly those inherent with courtside seats. Unfortunately,
courts have yet to address the issue of to what extent, if any, an owner of a basketball stadium has to
warn spectators of potential risks. A determination of if a basketball arena s owner duty to warn will
likely require the court to look at unique circumstance of a basketball game, using the duty to warn
spectators in golf, baseball, and hockey as guidance but not binding precedent. Ultimately, it is likely
that a court would find that no duty to warn spectators exist because the risks of setting courtside at a
basketball game, literally feet from the intense action of the game, should be

Two Main Coronaries
1. The two main coronary arteries that supply blood to the hart are the left main coronary artery and
the right coronary artery.
The left main coronary artery provides blood to the left part of the heart (e.g. left atrium and left
ventricle). In particular, the left main coronary branches off into the circumflex artery and the left
anterior descending artery. If there is occlusion in the circumflex coronary, then there is infarction in
the left atrium and the side and back of the left ventricle. In addition, if there is blockage in the left
anterior descending artery, then there is infarction in the front and bottom of the left ventricle, and the
bottom of the sepum.
The right coronary artery supplies blood into the right area of the heart

President Franklin D. Roosevelt And The Great Depression...
In the beginning of the United States, government pioneers generally abstained from managing
business. As the twentieth century drew closer, in any case, the union of U.S. industry into
progressively intense enterprises prodded government intercession to ensure little organizations and
purchasers. In 1890, Congress authorized the Sherman Antitrust Act, a law intended to reestablish
rivalry and free endeavor by separating imposing business models. In 1906, it passed laws to
guarantee that sustenance and medications were effectively named and that meat was investigated
before being sold. In 1913, the administration set up another government managing an account
framework, the Federal Reserve, to direct the country s cash supply and to place a few controls on
saving money exercises.
The biggest changes in the administration s part happened amid the New Deal, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt s reaction to the Great Depression. Amid this period in the 1930s, the United States
persevered through the most noticeably awful business emergency and the most noteworthy rate of
unemployment in its history. Numerous Americans presumed that free private enterprise had fizzled.
So they looked to government to straightforwardness hardships and lessen what had all the earmarks
of being self dangerous rivalry. Roosevelt and the Congress instituted a large group of new laws that
gave government the ability to mediate in the economy. In addition to other things, these laws

Value Chain System
VALUE CHAIN SYSTEM
The value chain concept was created by Michael Porter and explained in his book Competitive
Advantage , published in 1980. The value chain is a series of activities that create and build value
culminating in the contribution of total value to the organization. Porter used the concept of value
chain as a systematic approach to examining the development of an organization s competitive
advantage in the marketplace.
In using the value chain concept, the total activities undertaken by a business are split into Primary
Activities and Support Activities. Primary activities relate to inbound logistics, operations, outbound

Socrates And The Early Athenian Era
Socrates, a well known philosopher of the early Athenian era, is believed to be one of the wisest and
virtuous philosophers of all time. This belief holds true in the encounters of Symposium by Plato, as
depicted by Alcibiades during a symposium held by Agathon. Alcibiades, the last to speak at the
symposium, derails from the topic of the night, love, and elicits much praise and gratitude for
Socrates. Although Alcibiades did not witness the speech given by Socrates on love, he manages to
depict how Socrates endeavors through life with notions that are remarkable to that of what Socrates
mentions during his oral, from which much insight is inspired as to the values of which Socrates
holds.
Socrates is reveled as a man who has no greater desire than to gain more knowledge and holds the
greatest beauty of all in that of knowledge. During Socrates turn during the speeches of love, he
examples what the others have said during their turn and does not discord them, but adds on to reveal
how he himself views these notions. Socrates starts by stating that although the previous accounts on
love were sound, this is not how he views such topics. He goes on to question the members of the
symposium on hard concepts mentioned by those before him and manages to unravel that those who
desire something then does not have that of which is desired. Socrates does not live with desires for
extremes of the spectrum for any topic, but finds an equal medium that allows him to have better

Who Really Decides Abortion
Who Really Decides Abortion?
The advocates for legal abortion, or pro choice believe women should have the right to abortion at any
point during a pregnancy. On the other hand, those against pro choice advocate that any abortion
should be considered murder, and want to protect human life. The landmark Supreme Court case Roe
v Wade (1973) allowed women the right to make their own personal medical decisions regarding
abortion, and pro choice women were then protected by a Constitutional Right to Privacy. In the next
three decades, Supreme Court decisions began to limit the ability for young women, and especially
low income women of color to make the decision to end a pregnancy. The Supreme Court was also
called upon repeatedly to decide whether ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We see this isn t the case in real world applications, but it should not require government interest to be
challenged at the highest level in order to outlaw discriminative laws and the lawmaking process. It
comes as no surprise to anyone that abortion restrictions especially in the state of Texas were
discriminative, and the acts of a few who challenged the discriminative lawmaking process takes more
than courage. For example, the Supreme Court s assumption that Men acting as legislators, doctors,
judges, or husbands must have a role in women s private decisions (Daly). The bigger picture of this
presumption should bring light to a question for legislative bodies who have the power to pass laws.
Should legislative bodies be considered in contempt for crimes of discrimination for allowing such a
burden towards women to exist. Restrictions passed went against the governmental structure of
political culture laid before us by our Founding Fathers, and after 2 decades some of the previously
listed restrictions to abortion have finally been

Essay On The Future Of The Energy Industry
What is the future of the energy industry in Canada? A big uncertainty that arises for the energy
industry in Canada surrounds the new U.S. administration. According to National Resources Canada,
Canada currently exports 99% of its oil and gas to the U.S. (2017a). If Trump were to revise the
current NAFTA agreement, and impose a tax on imports to the U.S. from Canada, it could result in
Canada losing a major partner, and cause the economy to take a hit. As mentioned, President Trump is
in support of the Keystone XL pipeline, however, that then also comes under scrutiny for how much of
the profit would Trump expect. As of November 2017, the Keystone XL pipeline is approved, but on
an alternative route, and it still faces challenges. If ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, emissions per barrel of oil produced in the oil sands have fallen over 35% since 1990,
(Government of Canada, 2017a). It is good that Canada is taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint,
but the future of Canada as a member of the Paris Agreement is uncertain if Canada does not take
more tangible steps to reduce the production and emission of greenhouse gases. What is Suncor s
Future? Based on the challenges identified, and the way that Suncor approaches these challenges, the
future looks bright for Suncor. As the case study points out, water use is an environmental issue that
requires careful management (Vietor, 2016, p.7). The major oil producing companies were taking
measures to reduce the amount of fresh water they were withdrawing from the Athabasca River, and
the Canadian government had restricted withdrawals to 5.2% of the river s median flow (Vietor, 2016,
p.7). In 2015, Suncor more than exceeded their goal of reducing their water usage. The government
regulated that they could use 59.8 million cubic meters annually, however, their 2014 usage was only
18.65 million cubic meters, (Vietor, 2016 p.12). This demonstrates that Suncor is on track to meet
national demands and constraints placed on the energy industry. As they are ahead of the game in this
regard, they set precedence for other oil and gas companies in the industry, and this action encourages
them to reduce their own water consumption in the future. As Suncor has already achieved

How Did Ancient Greek Culture Influence Ancient American...
People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history live
forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world currently, no
matter if it s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn t just pop out of no where. History
is part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome s greatest philosopher, Marcus
Tullius Cicero once said, To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a

American s interest in ancient Greek culture develops when they sense that there s a connection
between them: ...the Greek War of Independence against Turkish domination aroused the sympathy of
our citizens, who saw in the Greek struggle for freedom a parallel to our own War of Independence
(Downs 173). The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for freedom from a
controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the Greek culture even
more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of democracy: As the Greek
Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as indigenous to the soil of our
system of law...and our democratic system of government, which was founded on the ancient ideal of
individual freedom (Downs 176). After studying and getting hold of the architectural idea and
vocabulary, Greek architecture soon becomes America s national style. The classical look of the Greek
architectural are made up of three primary orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric being the oldest
and simplest of the three: The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a
column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base...entablature includes a frieze
composed of triglyphs and metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky,
proportions (Becker 1). The Doric is best describe as the most understated style with a masculine
appearance out of the three orders. Despite the simplest look of the Doric, it is the most popular. The
Parthenon, also known as the epitome of Greek culture, is built under the Doric order. Famous works
of the Doric order in the United States can be seen on the design of the Lincoln Memorial in
Washington D.C and the Justice Hall Building in New York City. Next is the Ionic: notable for its

Christina Rossetti Remember Essay
After reading Christina Rossetti s poem Remember , it is evident to one s eyes that Rossetti is
expressing to her loved one that she wants to be remembered when she passes and wishes for him not
to be grieving of her presence being no more, but yet, wants him to smile of the memories that they
once shared. Rossetti expresses how she desires to be remembered by her lover, and does this by the
choice of diction, her utilization of syntax, and the tone in which she presents to the reader. In Rossetti
s poem Remember , the poet expresses herself and her work in a very neutral way. Although she does
phrase some words in a way one may not use in modern times, such as When you can no more hold

not any sentence fragments, nor are there rhetorical questions throughout the poem, Remember . In
line 6, it states You tell me of our future that you planned: only remember me; Parallel structure is thus
shown in that line. Aforementioned, the narrator wants to be sure that when she does pass, her beloved
remembers her. There is a continuous repetition of the words Remember me... There is also a
repetition in the beginning of the poem when the author says ...when I am gone away, gone far away...
the words gone and away are repeated and the word far is added into the ending of that sentence to
add emphasis on how she will be away. There is not much variety as to how the sentences are
structured and patterned. The author has the poem in an iambic pentameter in the opening of the poem
consisting of the pattern ABBAABBA and later towards the end of the poem going to CDE CDE. The
poem is organized into one stanza that is consisted of fourteen

to protect their own people. The electronic surveillance that each government conducts is so complex
and covert that you don t even know that you are the target. The US government has become one of
the biggest cases of this kind of surveillance. The US government has been employing several forms
of high level surveillance such as wiretapping, CCTV cameras (Closed Circuit Televisions, aka street

The Theme Of Dirality In The Bacchae
The classic Greek play The Bacchae by Euripides, explores the concepts of the restraint of human
convention as opposed to the liberty of nature.
From the beginning, Dionysus and Pentheus personalities clash. Pentheus refuses to acknowledge that
Dionysus is a god, which is made clear in the first passage he s dead, burnt to cinder by lighting . This
passage also shows the audience what Pentheus thinks about people who express their natural desires
openly through Bacchae worship Sir I am ashamed to see two men or your age with so little sense of

behavior. Pentheus sees Dionysus epicurean disposition as a threat and therefore ridicules him for it Is

He asks Pentheus if he would like to see the Bacchae rather than attack them to which Pentheus
replies that he would, even though it would cause me distress to see them drunk with wine . Even then
Pentheus continues the charade of self control and decency when the audience can clearly see that he
is long gone. It is now clear that Pentheus has these natural desires that he hypocritically condemns
the Bacchae for. Dionysus then degrades Pentheus in one of the most ghastly ways possible, he
convinces Pentheus to dress in women s clothes. By this point Pentheus mind has become so distorted
by Dionysus power that he is compliant with the idea, even parsing Dionysus for it how you think of
everything! . Dionysus replies with what can be argued is the most telling line of the play It was
Dionysus who inspired me with that thought . By having Dionysus refers to himself in the third person

Polyethylene Research Paper
Around 150 years ago, there was no such thing as plastic or any synthetic materials that were widely
used. The invention of plastic gave us the ability to produce materials that cannot be made from
natural substances alone. At first the benefit of creating synthetic materials was greatly overlooked for
many years, but over time the benefits became more evident. Polyethylene s first discovery was
actually made on accident. In 1899, Hans von Pechmann discovered polyethylene at the bottom of a
test tube in his laboratory (Sharp 18). He was convinced that this chemical was a waste product that
could be found after chemical reactions had taken place. Making this assumption, he disregarded the

In fact the 1950 s and 1960 s showed a time of great expansion for the uses of plastic materials. So
much so that in 1976, plastic surpassed steel in becoming the most widely used material (Greer A.25.).
With the major technological advancements that occurred around this time in the 1970 s, many
technological products today now contain polyethylene or other plastic materials. Some examples of
current technological products that are composed of polyethylene include DVDs, computer and video
games and CDs (Bell 17). It has been proven that the use of polyethylene in these products has also
increased the audio and video capabilities of these products greatly (Bell 17). CDs made in the last
several decades are made from an injection molded [form of] polyethylene and this material makes the
CD less likely to wear down over time (Bell 17). Our entertainment would be of a much lower quality

The unemployment rate is projected to lower in 2017 and the years following it. The 4.5 percentage is
at a low compared to the 4.7 unemployment rate from 2016 and the 6.7 unemployment rate from the
Fed s. Although this drop means that the creation and attaining of jobs for citizens has increased, there
is still an issue. The specific unemployment known as structural unemployment has increased,
meaning that many workers are only working part time or have been subjected to lower paying jobs.
Janet Yellen, Federal Reserve Chair, explains that most job growth has come from food service
industries and low paying retail such as being an associate at Target or Sears. These increased job
fillings make it seem that unemployment rate is low when the high paying job positions are not
increasing. Yellen considers the real unemployment rate to be a more accurate representation of the
current state of unemployment in the nation. As opposed to the official unemployment rate (U 3), the
real unemployment rate (U 6) considers those who are marginally attached and discouraged rather
than just those who have looked for a job in the past four weeks and are unemployed. In addition, the
real unemployment rate looks at the part time workers who are not satisfied with their current

Literary Analysis Of Jimmy Santiago Baac Poetry As Lifesavor
Literary Analysis of Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as Lifesavor The article, Jimmy Santiago Baca:
Poetry as Lifesavor retells the challenges and hardships Baca experienced. Rob Baker, the author,
informs the readers that past experiences will continually influence decisions in the future. In the
beginning it is revealed that the characters parrents abandoned him at the young age of seven. His
troubles only worsened as time went on for he dropped out of junior high, due to not performing well
academically and socially. Therefore, he fell into the wrong crowds and was eventually sentenced to
prison for five to ten years, at the age of twenty one. Poety helped him to overcome the mental and
emotional impact that prison imparts with the individual. Baca now uses his experiences to reach out
to the community by becoming a teacher to encourage children to embrace their own stories. Rob
Baker s tone and diction assists the reader in comprehending how Bacas past shaped his future. The
serious tone and the vocabulary Baker applies; adds to the total effect of Bacas story. The vocabulary
is simple enough for a varitey of ages to understand, although elaborate enough to be capable of
picturing the scene, The healer who tended to her wound and then brought Baca into the world said
that because of the venom Baca would be able o see in the dark and he would change many times in
his life (Baker 893). Both diction and and tone appeals to the emotions of the reader, for it causes the
reader to be aware that this story is reality to Jimmy Santiago Baca. The author utilizes examples,
compare/contrast, a story line, and cause effect. Baker gives the reader an example of Bacas
employment before prison, He worked piecemal jobs loading food on planes, operating a vending
machine route, a handyman business. Then, during stints in Caliornia and Arizona, he became a very
successful drug dealer (Baker 893). Demonstrating how much the character struggled to create a living
without a formal education. Baker not only compared and contrasted Bacas skill level before and after
prison but also his quality of life. Illustrating Baca as an individual who could not read or write to
someone who fell in love with poetry. The writer

  • 3. Eharmony Examination What kind of a platform business is the online personals market? What kind of network effects (direct, cross sided, positive, and negative) does it leverage? How structurally attractive is it? The online personals market is a specific niche of social networking, and it is a sole sponsor, proprietary platform business. In terms of network effects, it could be seen as a one sided network (users can instigate an interaction, or can have someone else instigate an interaction with them), but is better described as a two sided market with men on one side, and women on the other (with the exception of homosexual sites which are clearly one sided markets). Within this, there are both direct and cross sided network effects. For direct, there are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The company creates value by doing a lot of the work for its clients. While the initial time investment (45 minutes) may be longer than the traditional model, it then provides the service of searching through the millions of potential matches. This not only proves to be a more accurate way to find dates, but also saves a great deal of time (where most online daters spend a 7 times as much time searching for a partner as they do interacting). And for men, who are usually fighting over a scarcity of women, they benefit from the majority percentage of women who have become the core of eHarmony s paid customers. Thus the value proposition for the customer is: better matches (and better quality people) with a much smaller time commitment. The customers who benefit most from this are people who are serious about finding a person for a long term relationship (rather than those who are just browsing, or hoping to have flings with as many people as possible). With eHarmony s superior product, we can calculate that their competitive advantage (WTP Cost)eHarmony (WTP Cost)Chemistry. In this case, eHarmony s average price (of the four options) is $37.45 versus $34.14 for Chemistry, demonstrating the increased WTP of their customers. • 4. Scientific Revolution Enlightenment Is it possible for a revolution to occur overnight? No. A Revolution is the wish to overthrow a government or social belief to achieve a new political or belief system in the course of several years. These revolts or breakthroughs tend to occur when the essential needs of the common people are not being met. Between 1500 1800 in Europe, literature also reflected historical events including famous romantic novels such as Frankenstein and A Tale of Two Cities. For my Winter Trimester Final in Revolutions in Thought, I chose to represent revolutions by creating a tree where each revolution was benefited from pervious discoveries in the prior revolution. For example, how the Scientific Revolution s discoveries would benefit the Enlightenment Period. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Enlightenment Period, philosophers questioned what is truth along with how to break free from tutelage, instructions or learning from others. When the poor people looked at the way France was being run, they questioned why the upper class was not being taxed as heavily as themselves. In these secret meetings, a group of men entitled the National Constituent Assembly created the Declaration of Men which stated Men are born and remain free and equal in rights (National Constituent Assembly). This was the first document of its kind where all people could be created equal no matter what class. Rich and poor would pay equal taxes and be given the same respect by the government. This document would later become the first step toward writing a new constitution for France. Sixty years after the French Revolution was completed, Charles Dickens wrote A Tale of Two Cities, which reflected the French Revolution with characters from both France and England. Throughout the book, Dickens makes reference to the comparison of wine verses blood and how this symbolized the revolution itself. This comparison is shown when Dickens states The time was to come, when that wine too would be spilled on the street stones, and when the stain of it would be red upon many there (Dickens 22). In this quote, Dickens hints at the lethal mistakes in the revolutionaries ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Doctrine Of Predestination The Doctrine of Predestination is one potential answer to the question of how individuals come to a saving faith in Christ. Although he did not invent the Doctrine of Predestination, John Calvin has often been considered its figurehead since the Reformation. This doctrine is defined as the divine decree according to which certain persons are infallibly guided to eternal salvation. On the other side of the argument is Arminianism. This view states the Christ died for all of humanity rather than just an elect percentage. The Arminianist argument states that God s divine sovereignty is compatible with the free will of humanity. C.S. Lewis argued for and defended the Arminian view. Both sides can present biblical passages to support their arguments. The fact that the Bible is inconclusive on the matter is ultimately the source of this dispute. While either Calvin or Lewis could be correct, the truth is likely an amalgamation of the two. Although the Bible is ambiguous on the topic of predestination versus free will, one will find a case for the Doctrine of Predestination in the scriptures. In the Bible, God uses individuals and people groups to fulfill plans for the world. Noah, for example, was chosen to survive the flood and continue humanity. God called Abraham from Ur to father the Nation of Israel, God s chosen people in His plan to redeem creation. In Jeremiah 1:5, the case for predestination is particularly strong when God spoke to Jeremiah, telling him, before I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Atmosphere and The Ozone Layer The atmosphere is an amazing creation. It contains many things that help make this world a place where we can live. The atmosphere contains ozone. That helps protect our skin from harmful sun rays. Many layers make up our atmosphere. There are five main layers, the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and lastly the exosphere. Each layer has a different purpose. Clouds are located in the atmosphere and are a big part of the water cycle. There are different types of clouds and they all have different effects. Conduction and convection also play a big part in how we live our lives today. Ozone is a gas in the atmosphere. It absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Without ozone, our skin would burn from the suns radiation. Ozone can be either good or bad for your health. It depends on the location of it in the atmosphere. It can also be bad for the environment. When ozone is near the ground it is considered very dangerous. During the hot summer months ozone levels should be monitored. In the summer, more harmful ozone concentrations are in the air we use. Inhaling ozone can be very dangerous to our health. It can cause a number of health problems. Scientists are figuring out ways to help keep the air clean and people and the environment healthy. (1) There are many different layers in the atmosphere, five actually. A Research Study On Breastfeeding Case study: breastfeeding Breast feeding rates in developed countries such as the UK, Australia and the US are typically lower than World Health Organisation goals Parkinson (2010) 3. From a study carried out by Queensland university stressed the importance of not only the delivery of literature on how effective breastfeeding is for your babies health but that what was also needed to increase the number of breast feeders was to give personal support and explains social and environmental benefits also. When they looked at the UK in particular, Parkinson (2010) 3 stated women already understood that breastfeeding was good for their baby, and what they needed were the tools to help them to breastfeed longer. From this it is clear that although effective and sufficient information around the benefits of the child is being addressed, there is no sufficient information or skills being given direct to the parents in order for them to carry this out for any length of time. Another piece of research was carried out in 2010 on ways to change the paradigm of breastfeeding, from encouraging promotion of breast feeding within the employment setting. Dr Lawrence (2010) 1 said instead of promoting the tremendous benefits of breastfeeding to this population, the risks of formula feeding and the costs to health and the community of not breastfeeding will have to incorporated into persuading these women to do the best for their infants and themselves . New laws were being formed about child labor, women started standing up for themselves and demanding tights and just in general people started to realize that if they wanted something to change that they had to speak up to make a difference. As cities became more crowded, people started to look for peace in their chaotic lives. Before this time period, not many people valued the true beauty of the western United States and all of its beautiful scenery. Many explorers that have gone west have discovered wonderful things. New plants, rivers, mountains and many new creatures were among the things that they discovered. In 1857 when S.H. Hammond writes a book explaining the outdoors as a retreat from everyday life, that was the first time that people started to value our nation s great resources. • 9. The Economic, Military and Political Power of the Union... The economic, military, and political power of the Union was much greater than the Confederacy. Still, the war did go on for four years. The Confederacy demonstrated itself strong many times. Throughout the war the struggles continuously shifted, and because of that, so did the economic, military, and political strength of both sides. Although both sides saw accomplishments of military successes, at the end of the war, the bigger economy of the north, centralized government and overpowering manpower would eventually lead to a northern victory. In 1863, it was up in the air because either the Union or the Confederacy could have won the war, but the Confederacy did not have enough manpower to outlast the Union in a drawn out war. The Union was seemingly far more advanced in terms of industrialization compared to the South. The North was in control of about 80% of United States industry (McPherson, 24). Also, most of the Confederate industry was not located in the Deep South but rather the Upper South, mostly in Virginia. After Deleware, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland joind the Uninion, the Confederacy continued to lose large amounts of possible industry and manpower. The Confederacy lost these states due to the clever politics of the North such as the state of Maryland, as it was to the opposition within certain states such as West Virginia. In the following paper I intend to give clear and succinct information on how oil shale was deposited in the Greater Green River Basin, what it is made of, what was the maturation history of the shale, how the oil is recovered from very impermeable sedimentary units, how economics will play a role in its future as a reliable energy source, as well as the environmental impact of oil production in the basin. Structure of the Greater Green River Basin The Greater Green River Basin is a basin located in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The mountains that surround the basin are the Wind River Mountains and Granite Mountains (Sweetwater Arch) to the north, the Uinta Mountains to the south, the Wyoming thrust belt to the west, and the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Rawlins Uplift to the East. Meno argues with his Meno s Paradox that, one logically cannot inquire productivity into what one does not already know (Meno 58). It consists of teleological intuition which has two caused principles. One is that everything has a cause with at least as much reality as it has itself. The other principle is that everything with objective reality has a cause with formal reality. Objective realities are things like images and ideas, and formal reality is the kind of reality it has by virtue. There are infinite and finite substances which are both types of formal reality. Finite substances cause properties, but the properties depend on the finite substances for their existence, but infinite substances don t depend on anything at all. It is also very likely that the change included multiple pennies. These pennies will then proceed to be left in a pocket and forgotten, never to be used again because their purchasing power is non existent. The United States government should discontinue the manufacturing of pennies. Pennies do not serve the primary role of currency anymore. Also, pennies are uneconomical to produce and waste taxpayers money by lining the pockets of corporations. Lastly, many other countries have discontinued the production of their cent pieces with no negative impact. To understand why a penny does not fulfill its role as currency anymore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the use of fiat currency, many governments backed the value of the currency with gold. For a while, thirty five United States Dollars could be traded for 1 Troy ounce of gold at a bank. Today however, the USD is no longer backed by gold. Most money today is just worthless paper , and if the government endorsing that money fails, it turns that currency into useless paper. (This is causes hyperinflation and recently happened to the Zimbabwean dollar.) All of this ties back into the original problem with pennies. Fiat currency cannot itself be worth more than the value it is given. It would make absolutely no sense to take a dollar worth of gold and make it into a 50 cent coin. If this was done, people would just use the coin as gold, not the 50 cent piece it was supposed to be. When the material fiat money is made out of is worth more than the government proclaimed value, the purpose of that currency has failed and it has turned back into commodity currency. A penny currently costs 1.8 cents to make. That 1.8 cent chuck of metal is then assigned a value of 1 cent. It is unthinkable to lose .8 cents for every penny manufactured. This is just like the aforementioned example where a dollar worth of gold was made into a 50 cent coin. In comparison, the movie begins with a scene not included in the book in which Alice sings about her world, foreshadowing wonderland. In the beginning, the versions are similar. For example, determining if a golf course is in a reasonably safe condition includes considering its design, protections for spectators, and the manner in which the coarse is operated. Under the safe place statute, Taxpayer can make several claims that the City of Milwaukee was negligent in maintaining the course. First, Taxpayer can assert that the City failed in their duty to warn spectators of the risks of an errant ball. However, the National Basketball Association ( NBA ), the largest professional basketball in the world, does not require arena owners to warn spectators of the risks for attending a basketball game, particularly those inherent with courtside seats. Unfortunately, courts have yet to address the issue of to what extent, if any, an owner of a basketball stadium has to warn spectators of potential risks. A determination of if a basketball arena s owner duty to warn will likely require the court to look at unique circumstance of a basketball game, using the duty to warn spectators in golf, baseball, and hockey as guidance but not binding precedent. If Trump were to revise the current NAFTA agreement, and impose a tax on imports to the U.S. from Canada, it could result in Canada losing a major partner, and cause the economy to take a hit. As mentioned, President Trump is in support of the Keystone XL pipeline, however, that then also comes under scrutiny for how much of the profit would Trump expect. As of November 2017, the Keystone XL pipeline is approved, but on an alternative route, and it still faces challenges. If ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, emissions per barrel of oil produced in the oil sands have fallen over 35% since 1990, (Government of Canada, 2017a). It is good that Canada is taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint, but the future of Canada as a member of the Paris Agreement is uncertain if Canada does not take more tangible steps to reduce the production and emission of greenhouse gases. What is Suncor s Future? Based on the challenges identified, and the way that Suncor approaches these challenges, the future looks bright for Suncor. As the case study points out, water use is an environmental issue that requires careful management (Vietor, 2016, p.7). The major oil producing companies were taking measures to reduce the amount of fresh water they were withdrawing from the Athabasca River, and the Canadian government had restricted withdrawals to 5.2% of the river s median flow (Vietor, 2016, p.7). In 2015, Suncor more than exceeded their goal of reducing their water usage. The government regulated that they could use 59.8 million cubic meters annually, however, their 2014 usage was only 18.65 million cubic meters, (Vietor, 2016 p.12). This demonstrates that Suncor is on track to meet national demands and constraints placed on the energy industry. As they are ahead of the game in this regard, they set precedence for other oil and gas companies in the industry, and this action encourages them to reduce their own water consumption in the future. As Suncor has already achieved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. How Did Ancient Greek Culture Influence Ancient American... People come and go, but their work of art and ideas can flourish for eternity. Art makes history live forever. It opens up doors to the past and wisdom to the future. Existence in this world currently, no matter if it s a person or a thing, is all result of the past. Stuff doesn t just pop out of no where. History is part of everything. Everything is a part of history. One of Rome s greatest philosopher, Marcus Tullius Cicero once said, To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. American s interest in ancient Greek culture develops when they sense that there s a connection between them: ...the Greek War of Independence against Turkish domination aroused the sympathy of our citizens, who saw in the Greek struggle for freedom a parallel to our own War of Independence (Downs 173). The parallelism is that they both have experience of battling for freedom from a controlling country. Another relation that makes the Americans appreciate the Greek culture even more is the archeological discovery showing Greece as the birthplace of democracy: As the Greek Revival style unfolded and developed in the United States it became as indigenous to the soil of our system of law...and our democratic system of government, which was founded on the ancient ideal of individual freedom (Downs 176). After studying and getting hold of the architectural idea and vocabulary, Greek architecture soon becomes America s national style. The classical look of the Greek architectural are made up of three primary orders: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric being the oldest and simplest of the three: The Doric order is characterized by a plain, unadorned column capital and a column that rests directly on the stylobate of the temple without a base...entablature includes a frieze composed of triglyphs and metopes. The columns are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky, proportions (Becker 1). The Doric is best describe as the most understated style with a masculine appearance out of the three orders. Despite the simplest look of the Doric, it is the most popular. The Parthenon, also known as the epitome of Greek culture, is built under the Doric order. Famous works of the Doric order in the United States can be seen on the design of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and the Justice Hall Building in New York City. Christina Rossetti Remember Essay After reading Christina Rossetti s poem Remember , it is evident to one s eyes that Rossetti is expressing to her loved one that she wants to be remembered when she passes and wishes for him not to be grieving of her presence being no more, but yet, wants him to smile of the memories that they once shared. Rossetti expresses how she desires to be remembered by her lover, and does this by the choice of diction, her utilization of syntax, and the tone in which she presents to the reader. In Rossetti s poem Remember , the poet expresses herself and her work in a very neutral way. From the beginning, Dionysus and Pentheus personalities clash. Pentheus refuses to acknowledge that Dionysus is a god, which is made clear in the first passage he s dead, burnt to cinder by lighting . This passage also shows the audience what Pentheus thinks about people who express their natural desires openly through Bacchae worship Sir I am ashamed to see two men or your age with so little sense of decency . It is now clear that Pentheus has these natural desires that he hypocritically condemns the Bacchae for. Dionysus then degrades Pentheus in one of the most ghastly ways possible, he convinces Pentheus to dress in women s clothes. By this point Pentheus mind has become so distorted by Dionysus power that he is compliant with the idea, even parsing Dionysus for it how you think of everything! . Dionysus replies with what can be argued is the most telling line of the play It was Dionysus who inspired me with that thought . The invention of plastic gave us the ability to produce materials that cannot be made from natural substances alone. At first the benefit of creating synthetic materials was greatly overlooked for many years, but over time the benefits became more evident. Polyethylene s first discovery was actually made on accident. In 1899, Hans von Pechmann discovered polyethylene at the bottom of a test tube in his laboratory (Sharp 18).
