Confederation from 1815 to 1866, see Bundesversammlung (German Confederation).
The Bundestag (Federal Diet; pronounced [Л€bК
ЉndЙ™staЛђk]) is a legislative body in Germany
. In practice Germany is governed by a bicameral legislature, of which the Bundestag serves as the
lower house and the Bundesrat the upper house. The Bundestag was established by the German
Basic Law of 1949, as the successor to the earlier Reichstag. It meets in the Reichstag Building in
Berlin. Norbert Lammert is the current President of the Bundestag. With the new constitution of

Understandably, the opposition parties are active in exercising the parliamentary right to scrutinize
government actions.
One striking difference when comparing the Bundestag with the British Parliament is the lack of
time spent on serving constituents in Germany. This is in part due to Germany s electoral system.
A practical constraint on the expansion of constituent service is the limited personal staff of
Bundestag deputies. Despite these constraints especially those deputies that are elected directly
normally try to keep close contact with their constituents and to help them with their problems,
particularly when they are related to federal policies or agencies.
Constituent service does also take place in the form of the Petition Committee. In 2004, the Petition
Committee received over 18,000 complaints from citizens and was able to negotiate a mutually
satisfactory solution to more than half of them. In 2005, as a pilot of the potential of internet
petitions, a version of e Petitioner was produced for the Bundestag. This was a collaborative project
involving The Scottish Parliament, International Teledemocracy Centre and the Bundestag Online
Services Department . The system was formally launched on 1 September 2005, and in 2008 the
Bundestag moved to a new system based on its evaluation.[1]

Renaissance Love in Tristan and Iseult Essay
Renaissance Love in Tristan and Iseult
The modern concept of love owes a great deal to the Humanist tradition of the Renaissance. The
humanists focused on perfection and exaltation of this life as opposed to the afterlife. In Tristan
and Iseult the seeds of Renaissance love are present in the Middle Ages. To the modern eye, it is a
mystery how the period of the Middle Ages produced the seeds of the diametrically opposite
Renaissance. Yet it is necessary to understand this transformation if one is to fully comprehend the
forces that helped produce the modern consciousness. Courtly Love is a transitional concept that
emerged in the Middle Ages. It is transitional because it emerged early and acknowledges God as
the creator of love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The individual is nothing compared to the needs of the community. Tristanis even willing to give
Iseult the Fair to King Mark: for the life of King Mark, did Tristan by guile and by force conquer
the Queen of the hair of gold (37). Tristan is everything a lord could want in a vassal. Yet it is not
Tristan s love for King Mark that is what he is remembered for, but his love for Iseult, which is
portrayed as higher than the feudal system. The love between Tristan and Iseult clearly violates
the social conventions of the Middle Ages. When he falls in love with Iseult, Tristan s initial
reaction concerns his duty to King Mark, Iseult is yours and I am but your vassal; Iseult is
yours and I am your son; Iseult is yours and may not love me (43). Thankfully, the Love potion
that Tristan drinks excuses him from his duty to the king. It is necessary in the Middle Ages to
assure that Tristan is not being disloyal. The purity of the love is strengthened by the fact that
God sanctifies it, love dropped upon them from high heaven (57). This Love is God given and
therefore excused from the restrictions of feudal society. This mirrors the Humanist belief that
man was created in God s image, thus it is a form of worship to revere man. After Tristan and
Iseult have fallen in love, they exhibit all of the virtues that the Humanists of the Renaissance
admired. They focus on the joys of this life instead of focusing on death and the afterlife. When

While many different leadership theories have emerged, most can be classified as one of eight
major types: great man theories, trait theories, contingency theories, situational theories,
behavioural theories, participative theories, management theories and relationship theories.
However, I found the trait theories are best applied when talking about Margaret Thatcher.
4.1 An illustration of four theories
17 Trait theory
The trait theory of leadership, generally considered the first modern theory of leadership, became
popular during the second half of the twentieth century and, despite scholarly criticism, has
continued to be popular. The theory states that certain innate traits are common to leaders. Although
the identified traits vary, the most common are intelligence, self confidence, determination,
integrity, and sociability. (Shriberg and Shriberg, 2009) the reason behind choosing this theory to
be applied to my chosen leader is that I believe that the abovementioned traits are found in her.
Moreover, trait theory remains prevalent today.
4.3 Trait theory application to Margaret Thatcher
The trait theory expects leaders to have certain characteristics or traits. Traits are stable transferable
across situations. Traits are clearly identifiable measurable prediction. Traits such as: intelligence,
dominance, self confident, energetic, task related knowledge. According to one of her biographies

Roger s Influence On The Life Of Mr. Bacon
One of Roger s biggest influences, Aristotle, had been banned in the University of France, where
Roger wanted to work. In the 1240s they removed that rule and gave the chance for kids to
explore different thing, as they began the search for a young lecturer. Mr. Bacon had been perfect
for the job, thus he travelled over to France and began teaching there for several other years. At
the years of 1247 Roger has stopped teaching and focused more on his academics, as throughout
the rest of his life he made many different discoveries things such as optics, alchemy, and the
manufacture of gunpowder, the position and size of celestial bodies, Apocrypha, Calendrical

spent most of his elder years in his studies working on all sorts of things. Due to the fact that
Roger Bacon was alive in the medieval period they did not give out awards or award the success
of one another. Propitiously the Oxford University had dedicated their school too Roger Bacon and

The Dangers Of The Standardization Of Education In Schools
In his great work of poetry titled In Memoriam A.H.H., Alfred Tennyson (1850) praises his
friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, for straying from the city because of the standardization it caused:
For ground in yonder social mill / We rub each other s angles down, / And merge he said in form
and gloss / The picturesque of man and man (39 42). In these lines Tennyson is drawing attention
to dangers of large cities and their tendency to make residents the same rather than valuing people
s unique qualities and ideas. Hallam, as Tennyson notes here, abstained from cities in order to
preserve his own ideas and creativity. He did not want to be a part of standardized society. This
fear of losing ones creativity is not unique to Tennyson s time. In fact, this is a current problem
within universities today. Educationhas become extremely standardized and leaves little room for
creativity and does not take into account a person s unique abilities, strength, or interests beyond
the offered majors. Students are prescribed a generic core curriculum and then required to take a
broad range of courses in their field of study. With the modern standardization of education and
prescribed course tracks, creativity is stifled in college, where students are bound by unnecessary
requirements r simply by the inability to study their areas of interest.
The effects of prescribed education are being felt by college students in today s society as the class
tracks laid out for them are too broad in scope.

How Does Proton Pump Acid Affects The Body
Nutrition and lifestyle can change the body s response to drugs; conversely, a nutrient drug
interaction also affects the nutritional content in the body. Drugs may also change food absorption
and metabolism in the body. Some drugs can increase GI motility, increasing or decreasing food
digestion. Other drugs decrease GI motility. Some drugs are better tolerated if taken with food.1
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are one of the most important drugs in order to treat gastrointestinal
diseases. Proton pump inhibitors are a group of drugs whose main action is reduction of stomach
acid production. 2
Iron is an essential mineral in the body and there is iron in all cells in the body. It is the mineral
that should be in our diet, it is necessary for transport of oxygen through hemoglobin. Iron is also
vital for oxidation by cell.3 Dietary iron consist of two forms: heme or organic iron is found in

Play Essay
The play space is not school, and whilst learning may be an important playwork priority, what is
even more important is how the child learns and whether s/he retains control over prioritising
what is learnt. Play is a process of trial and error in which the error is as valuable to learning as is
the success. Within playwork we generally define playas behaviour which is freely chosen ,
personally directed and intrinsically motivated (Hughes, 1984). The definition is seen as having
authenticity by playworkers because it recognises not only the child centredness of play, but its
experimental nature (Eibl Eibesfeldt, 1967, 1970). (Hughes, 2001, p. 97)

Democratic Deficit in the European Union
Most voters seem to take the opportunity to give the incumbent national government a good
kicking during European elections, as seen in the UK, Spain and France, rather than vote on a
broad manifesto of ideas. This is fuelled further by MEPs campaigning on local issues rather than
European ones. This is an example of part of the democratic deficit in the European Parliament. To
further show how there is a democratic deficit in the European Parliament I will explain how it is
largely inaccessible to its European citizens and how the European Parliament lacks the power that
it requires to resolve the problems in the Union. I will then describe some unsuccessful attempts at
solutions and conclude with some possible future remedies.... Show more content on

The balance between these two branches differed from country to country. With the gradual
development of the EEC, more and more areas of public policy were transferred from national
governments to the community with the result that the overall powers of the executives within
member countries of the EU have increased while parliamentary powers have decreased.
The main argument is that the parliament is too weak, while the council is too powerful. The
executive branches, the Council and the Commission, are not drawn from Parliament and are thus
not accountable to it in the way it would be, for example, in the UK through a vote of no
confidence. The two branches are completely separate, which can mean that there is not an
effective check as there was meant to be. The Parliament is too weak to hold either of the executive
branches to account, meaning that they can pass legislation without the consent of the Parliament,
except when co decision applies on matters pertaining to qualified majority voting in the Council.
Compared to many national and sub national legislatures, the European Parliament has a relatively
low profile. In the past, some scholars of the European Union judged it to be less important than
other governing institutions of the Union. However, since the mid 1980 s the European Parliament
has undergone many substantial changes, probably more than any other major European Union
body. The Parliament s

A study done by Dr. George Reeves (1942) showed that emotional states play an important role
in the quality of people s eating habits. He studies five obese white women. Dr. Reeves
concluded that (a) obesity was used at a defense mechanism (b) these patterns were sadistic and
masochistic (c) oral satisfaction extended beyond social acceptable forms and (d) obesity was
used to simulate a masculine ideal. This study was limited because he had only five cases of
women, and they were all the same race and around the same age. Hirsch and Morse (1960)
presented a study to relate emotions to obesity and establish correlations between metabolic
findings from the obese patients in their study. They brought 74 patients to the Victoria General
Hospital Outpatient Obesity Clinic. The patients were given a questionnaire that was oriented
around their obesity history. The material from the interview were reviewed for symptoms of
emotional distress such as depression, anxiety, delusions, etc. 27 of the 74 patients were judged to
have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder after the questionnaire was completed. This study however
was unreliable because there was no average weighted people to interview as a control, also the
people in the study were unprepared to think abstractly, so the physician guided them throughout
the questionnaire, which made the data unreliable. Collyer (1974) backed Reeves (1942)
conclusions that women may gain weight as a defense mechanism to protect

The Importance Of Free Speech And The First Amendment
All the time, people are heard protesting about Free Speech , and The First Amendment . What
rights are really protected under the First Amendment according to our Constitution? The
answer may be shocking. In the United States of America, the concept of free speech is widely
called upon to reinforce the legality of offensive spoken words or actions. In reality, not all
speech is protected under the First Amendment. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinions,
but where is the line between what opinions are acceptable to be spoken of in public, and what is
inappropriate or too offensive. The true answer lies in the definition of the word public. While
government run agencies such as public universities have little they can do about what students
say, private colleges have virtually no requirements by law. Public universities have very little
say in what students are allowed to say or do so long as their speech and actions are reasonable.
Reasonable is defined as, for the duration of this essay, that they are not directly threatening to any
person or group, they refrain from using fighting words , and they do not take part in slander or
libel. Any restriction of reasonable free speech by a public universityis unconstitutional. While
public universities have requirements put upon them to allow most free speech, private colleges
have no such rules. The only requirements for any private collegeto allow free speech are those put
upon themselves by contract, or in few cases, put upon them by their state. Private colleges are
private so that they may choose which morals and ideals they put forward and deem important.
Although most private universities are not required to allow complete freedom of speech on their
campuses, many add an assurance of free speech or some variant of free speech in their handbook.
Free Speech Zones have become a popular solution to the ever growing problem of the
combination of protesters and easily offended people across the United States. These zones exist in
many places and are especially prevalent on college campuses. The intent of such zones is arguably
good, to ensure that the purpose of universities remains centered on learning. The constitutionality

A single silver toned, old fashioned key was lying in a beam of sunshine coming through the

She walked toward it in a stunned trance knowing this was the key that would open the door to the

` Standing up Whitley stepped to the other side of the table and ,just as she thought, there was a
straight seam running down the other side of the mirror down to the floor. She ran her hands
along the seam pushing every inch or so hoping to spring a hidden latch or lock. She went over
the entire seam, both sides and the top. The second time around she noticed a gap at the bottom,
under the table where the base board was supposed to meet the floor. The seam and the gap at
the bottom formed a perfect rectangle around the table and mirror; the shape of a doorway! She
began to prod under the table in hopes that she would find a handle or a knob of some sort. She
knew this was it, she felt it in her heart. Her frustration was increasing, she was so close and she
was getting nowhere. With a cry of exasperation she stood up, leaning against the table without
looking into the mirror for fear of seeing the gory vision again. She leaned heavily on the table,
her mind spinning circles. Suddenly she felt the table slide slightly backwards which should have
been impossible, and she heard a small click. Stepping back she watched as the section of wall

Importance Of Love In Literature

it then i loved it again and i hated it. ГЌ started at a young age with picture books and soon came

but i will always remember those. I started reading a writingat a young age. I was probably younger
than I could remember when my mother would read the short picture books to my while I lay in

with that book I always thought that was the most interesting thing. Give or take I was only 2
years old. From then on I read and read to the point where I was like Sonic reading all of those
books. Nobody read faster in my preschool, kindergarten and first grade classes. One day I was
sitting in my kindergarten class and teacher told us to go the library. We all had gotten in that

An Definition Of Domestic Violence Essay
The definition of domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, is a multiple or single incidence
of abusive behavior that uses oppression, threats, isolation, and fear that often results in
psychological and/or emotional trauma. Intimate partner violence is not a specific gender issue; a
common assumption is that victims of abusive relationships are only women, which is a false
belief. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 men have experience
some type of psychological and/or physical violence by their partner (2014). Partner abuse, or
domestic violence is a big social problem in the United States. Alone in Texas, the NCADV
reported that there were 76,704 victims of abuse by current or former spouses. They also
reported 114 Texan women were killed by their partners. This is more than 10% of the national
total (2015). No matter the age, gender or race, everyone is exposed to this threat. A recent report
by the NCADV also reveals that 75% of Texans ranging from 16 to 24 year olds have experienced
violence by their partners, or know someone (2015). This is definitely a scary high number. Another
common assumption is that it is only the victims the ones who suffer. This is not exactly true. Child
AbuseNeglect written by Stephanie Holt, Helen Buckley and Sadhbh finds that, children and
adolescents living with domestic violence are at increased risk of experiencing emotional, physical
and sexual abuse, of developing emotional and behavioral

What are crystals?
Crystals are a piece of a solid substance with a natural shape or form with arranged plane faces. A
crystal is a group of molecules or atoms. Each of the crystals have a different shape. Like a sugar

Both Jane Addams and Saul Alinsky, worked to enact social change within the poor neighborhoods
of Chicago. Both would also go on to inspire many other social changes due to their methodologies
and accomplishments. However, Addams and Alinsky s approaches to bring about social change
are often described as being polar opposites. One could argue though, that despite these superficial
differences, Addams and Alinsky shared a commonality that is not often talked about. Jane Addams

This falls back to Alinsky s do anything to win mentality and win he did. The BYNC housed the
infant station and the Chicago Settlement never regained its footing within the community. Alinsky
had again proved the effectiveness of his methods (Hamington, 2010). Addams and Alinsky appear
to have very different organizing philosophies. Alinsky himself often commented how his methods
were so different than those of the settlement houses. These comments however, should have been
more directed at what the settlement houses had become and not at the originating principles of
Jane Addams Hull House. Jane Addams herself would likely disapprove of the direction that the
settlement houses had moved towards. Addams and Alinsky both recognized the importance of
listening and learning the needs of the community in order to gain perspective. Addams recognized
that when existing social institutions do not provide a reasonable means for citizen participation,
those citizens will organize to resist... Similarly, Alinsky viewed his organizations as fully
democratic [stating]: This kind of organization can be built only if people are working together for
real, attainable objectives (Hamington, 2010). The connections between the philosophies of
Addams and Alinsky are inextricably linked. The resonance between the social philosophies of
Addams and Alinsky is not surprising if the Chicago School connection is taken into account.

success as an artist have cemented her as one of the influential musicians out of every genre of
music. In this essay, I will examine how her musical style and female identity each played roles
her incredibly successful musical career. Carole King was originally named Carole Klein when
she was born in New York City on February 9, 1942 [1]. An accomplished pianist by age 10,
Carole began songwriting in her early teens [1]. Shortly after, she helped form a quartet called the

friends, and visited some places that I have never gone to before. It is understandable that I have
had different memories and have accumulated knowledge. Furthermore, I have learned the
importance of cohesion, experience and sharing through this fieldtrip. To be honest, I was closer
with Ms. Sang than other members because we used to join a part time job and to take some
classes together. That s why we usually went to many places and took photographs together and
missed others in my team. However, on first day, I had a small problem that my left leg was
dislocated twice, and really hurt due to my careless. All team s members worried so much, Ms.
Diem always inquired my health, Ms. Oanh gave pain medicines to me and Ms. Sang massaged
my leg. They took... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this fieldtrip, my personality has been changed about my thinking and my relationship.
Besides, I have learned how to manage a busy schedule, and how to interact with the audience

should be changed is making the trip longer, because this trip was short and we could not visit
some destinations that were in our schedule. I feel regret about this, but not too much. The trip
is really fantastic and its cost is totally reasonable, while food is delicious and not too greasy. I
am very pleased to experience such well quality trip like this. Last but not least, please allow me
to express my sincere thanks to the two instructors, I would like to say thank you so much for

Washington Irving s Rip Van Winkle Tale
Once I read the Norton Anthology section as well as the Washington Irving introduction. I learned a
lot about Mr. Irving, In addition to the romantic literature. Such as the writers of this time being
engaged with certain conflicts and the concerns of the time. Mr. Washington Irving being one of
five most important namely writers. However out of the selection of writings, I am going to
analyze the Rip Van Winkletale.
This tale was found in papers belonging to a Diedrich Knickerbocker. He was a man with
curiosity in the province of the Dutch. And how the primitive settlers behaved. Although his
resources did not come from books, but from men themselves. Even still his researches resulted in
accuracy and has been established as a history of the Dutch governors province. There really is no
questions about the writings now. And are now historical collections. Yet still his mistakes are not
remembered with anger but sorrow. This is because he never meant to offend one, and this makes
his critics appreciate it. Many people hold him close. And provided him the chance of immortality,
which is equal to the waterloo medal which is a tiny coin. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Women Equality Research Paper
Women have had a battle with equality in the workforce for many years. Some say there is no

movements etc. they have stopped at nothing to achieve their goal. The goal to be equal and be

Discovering Netherlands Research Paper
Discovering Netherlands
During this past Spring I found myself traveling to The Netherlands to comfort my niece after a
terrible loss. This has been my second trip to this beautiful country even though it was not a
vacation trip it ended up been an amazing experience.
I arrived to Amsterdam but my destination was a new city for me The Hague, what a surprise! My
niece and her husband were renting a condo with a stunning view of Scheveningen beach. It is a
beautiful place with a large pier and all kind of restaurants, hotels and children attractions to
entertain locals and tourist. The weather was a little chill but the sun shone over the beach
making the scene just unforgettable. Full of people relaxing and having fun. The sun is really
appreciated there, people does not want to miss a bit of it since the winter days are very short. We
walked the original pier and sat at a restaurant to see the kids play and the adults enjoying a beer or
a glass of wine.
This city has many International buildings and it is the main residence for the royal family. The
architecture and the gardens are amazing. I photographed almost every sculpted garden full with

Dealing With Cats And Computers
I have had joy and stress with dealing with cats and computers. I work in a rescue and for the
most part, only a small portion of our cats care to entertain themselves with the computer and me
whilst I am using it. Those that do, it seems, only venture after the mouse. Okay, there has to be
a reason for that name so all righty then, I deal with it. However, we have started intaking some
cats that have taken to playing with me by walking up and down the key board some words even
spell check could not figure out. But all this was well and fine as it would only be for short bursts
of time. As long as I give equal attention to the felines as well as the computer, a happy medium
exists and work can continue. However, some of them (one in particular) have begun to sit atop
the monitor and bless Merlin s heart he s not graceful. Down he falls onto the keyboard and oh

Compare And Contrast The Liberal And Conservative Views On...
My philosophical viewpoint on the political parties can closely relate to both Liberal, and
Conservative. I will explain why I compare myself to both parties, and explain my views on
controversial topics. Liberalism part of the left wing of politics and the opposite of
conservative, Liberals have more tolerance for change, while conservatives would like to stick
with tradition attitude, values, and more so relates to politics rather than social reform. First and
most importantly gun control is an extremely popular topic as of right now with all the
shootings going on. Liberals protest that citizens should not have the right to keep and bear arms
because of all the shootings going on, while conservatives think that everyone with credibility
should be able to own a gun and protect himself or herself, and I completely agree with that. If
we as a whole make owning a gun illegal, not only will it start a big outrage across the country
and probably cause more destruction and death, but also it will also not help. For example drugs,
they are illegal but anyone can get it, and guns are much... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

should at least keep the price slightly the same for capable families that way we can at least pay

Death Penalty Pros And Cons
Opposing the Death Penalty When discussing the death penalty and its pros and cons, this subject
can quickly become very controversial. Can one really believe that an individual can commit a
crime so wicked that they should be put to death by another individual? The death penalty or capital
punishment is defined as a government sanctioned practice where a person is sentenced to death by
the state as a punishment for a crime. I oppose the death penalty, it should be put to an end and
terminated because the actual applications for the death penalty is random and capricious, the death
penalty violates the eighteenth amendment of the United States constitution, and even the guilty
should have the right to life.
The Death Penalty and Similar Crimes
To begin with, the death penalty should be terminated because the actual applications for the death
penalty is random, and capricious. In other words, the death penalty system here in the United
States is applied in an unfair manner. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU),
the death penalty system is an unjust method against people because it is largely dependent on
how much income and money the individual has, the intellectual skills of their attorneys, the
victim s race and or ethnicity and exactly where the crime took place. It is proven that people of
color is executed more compared to white people, more so if the victim is white. Innocent people
are often executed by the state. Over one hundred and fifty six

Support Children And Young People
Support children and young people to have positive relationships
1.1Identify the different relationships children and young people may have
There are many different relationships that children develop as they grow, babies know that they
cry to get attention from their parent for food or just a cuddle this is the beginning of learning to
build relationships. Every child and family are different in how they believe relationships should
be made and who children are allowed to talk to or be around so everyone is different when it
comes to who they trust or get along with. Relationships children and young people may have are:
parental, carer, sibling, family, friendship, emotional, acquaintance and professional.
1.2Explain the importance of positive relationships for development and wellbeing
The quality of relationships that we as practitioners have with children and young people has a
huge effect on the way in which we can work with them and help them. When children feel
comfortable with us they can separate more easily from their parents, they are more likely to
participate in the play and learning activities if they are secure emotionally. When children have a
strong relationship they are less likely to show unwanted behaviour as we can recognise and meet
their needs, children s language may develop more quickly as they feel confident talking to us.
Practitioners can plan more accurately as they understand children s developmental needs and know
their interests and what

Raynaud s Phenomenon Analysis
Raynaud s phenomenon is an episodic vasospasm of the peripheral digital arteries and veins that is
triggered by extreme heat or cold, emotional stress, or chemical stress such as exposure to

starting with pallor and moving to cyanosis and ending with erythema as the digits are reperfused.
Primary Raynaud s phenomenon is having these attacks as an isolated symptom without any

Analysis Of Kanye West s Song All Falls Down
The song I have chosen to talk about is one of my favorite songs ever and it s called All Falls

story of everything that he was going through at the time. Several individuals go to college
because it s a safe way to partake if you don t have anything planned after you have graduated

backup plan if they didn t do anything else with their career. If plan A doesn t work, you always

their studies and some people just don t have a job right after. Nothing is promised after you

Child Labor And The United States
When one hears the term Child Labor , an image of children making low quality clothing in some
dingy third world sweatshop inevitably comes to mind. While this imagery is unfortunately
founded in fact, the third world is not the only area complicit with this heinous practice.
Truthfully, we, as a nation are also guilty of propagating this heinous practice. For over a century,
this nation s youth were subjugated to exploitation and abuse at the hands of captains of industry
in the hopes of extracting every ounce of profit they could. Fortunately, sympathetic individuals
recognized the children s need for advocacy and rose to their defense in the form of organized
dissent that appealed to the highest powers of this country to fight for those who could not fight
for themselves. In this paper, we will look at what exactly child laboris, the circumstances that gave
rise to the widespread acceptance of child labor usage, what working condition these children
experienced, and how the United Stateseventually made its use illegal.
What is Child Labor?
Child labor is historically defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential
and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development (Hansan, 2013). Legally,
to be considered child labor, work must involve at least one of the following characteristics:
1.Violates a nation s minimum age laws
2.Threatens children s physical, mental or emotional well being
3.Involves intolerable

Bildungsroman In A Separate Peace
The quintessential element behind John Knowles s A Separate Peace is one of complex growth
through a personal journey, acknowledged as a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is a story of
formation, where the main character or characters face their demons. In other words, the novel
follows a coming of age tale where a journey of maturity whether emotional, psychological, or
social involves many events leading to the final personal analysis of which the main character
accepts. These concepts were highly present within the storyline of A Separate Peace, and they
follow the development of the main character, Gene Forrester. Throughout the conflicts that
occurred, Gene slowly transitioned into a new mindset that can be dissected in order to
understand the cause of his life altering experiences. As he arrived to the Devon school, an all
boys private academy in New Hampshire, Gene began a new chapter in his life. He sought out for
new friends, a new academic lifestyle, and an apprenticeship to life in preparation for the future. At

Overcoming Obstacles of Social Conventions in the Medieval...
Eliduc is a typical medieval story of courtly love. The Lai contains the common characteristics of
other Marie de France s Lais; as a worthy and valiant knight is confused about his love life. The
knight is caught between the duty he owes his wife and the new love he feels for a foreign
princess. Oddly enough, the two female characters, his wife and his secret lover have similar
names; Guildeleuc and Guilliadun. This is significant because these two women meet and rather
than becoming enemies as would be expected, they work as a team and live together. Over time
the title of the Lai has changed to Guildeleuc and Guilliadun because it is based on the two women.

Gender is only viewed as a small part in the social system which actually determines the role that
men and women have in society. It is Rubin s belief that the social and political systems are the
first cause of gender discrimination and the oppression of women in a society. It is these
conventions and customs that are ingrained in the minds of children from a very early age. Girls
are taught to perceive themselves as less gifted by nature because of their anatomical
characteristics. These conventions could make Guilliadun feel as that though she needs to
accept her husband s adulterous choices because that is how women should be treated by their
husbands, or so they have been told. In the beginning Eliduc is viewed as the perfect knight as
he is dutiful and faithful both to his lord and to his wife, and he is also valiant and courtly.
Eliduc is a man like no other in the land. Because Eliduc was so loyal to his king he was granted
special privileges he could hunt in the forests, there was no forester bold enough to dare try and

certain people to hunt in the forests, and it is usually men that are hunting for the king himself.

king cherished Eliduc s work. However, because of slander from jealous men

The Pros And Cons Of Prime Minister Borden
Prime minister Borden was wrong in passing military service act of 1917 being that all mentally
and physically stable men age 20 45 is forced to enlist in the military. He was wrong in
conscripting the french Canadians because it limited their french Canadian culture secondly it
limited democracy toward them and lastly there was no real reason for conscription in the first place.
Firstly The military service act was passed in the year 1917 by prime minister Borden, who was a
great nationalist and wanted to make sure that his country was well protected. Conscription took
away from french Canadian culture because many of the soldiers were mainly English speaking
creating language barriers between french Canadians and English Canadians. ... Show more content

Bringing nationalism could help Canada win the war and gain strength and power. Specifically,
conscription forces you to enlist meaning that there would be no way out young men could be
enrolled at any time and you can be arrested if you disagreed or resisted in any way. If you are
passionate to do something you will do it with great confidence. Similary if you feel patriotic
towards your nationality you will jump at any chance to do anything to protect it. But when you
are being forced to enlist you will not have a real passion, or feel patriotic towards your nation
because that person is being forced to enlist they will not feel loyal to their nation anymore, The
opposing point states that nationalism helps keep a country protected, and that enlisting people
will make canada seem larger. Secondaly when a young french canadian boy is being
conscripted/enlisted they will not be physically and mentally prepared for what they were going
to do , and what they will observe while serving in the military . The opposing viewpoint is
wrong because in order for nationalism to be brought in a country you have to have a passion or
really want to do it you need to feel great patriotism towards your country ,

luminol test and alternate light sources. Now a phenolphthalein test also known as the Kastle
Meyer test can be used at a scene to test for blood because if there is blood present it will react to
the heme molecules in the blood and give off a pink color. A luminol test is used to get a reaction
by using a light that results in the finding of oxidizing agents such as blood by catalyzing the
oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide in a basic solution. However, this test has been known to

Nightcrawler A Sociopath Analysis
It was a pleasant surprise seeing that NightCrawler was one of the film choices for this
psychopathy paper, I saw it in theaters when it was originally released and it has been one of my
all time favorites ever since. Even after rewatching it countless times since, the movie still never
fails to keep my attention. One thing is for sure, Jake Gyllenhaal s character, Louis Bloom, is a
bona fide psychopath. I will go into greater detail about the reasoning for this later, after discussing
what exactly being a psychopath entails and the different traits that are used to characterize them.
Believe it or not, many people in today s society cannot really distinguish between the two terms,
psychopath and sociopath. Back in the early 1800s, the doctors that were working with mental
patients began to realize that some of their patients who appeared outwardly normal had what they
termed a moral depravity or moral insanity . These patients seemed to have no sense of the rights of
other people, or even of ethics in general. The term psychopath was initially applied to these
individuals around the beginning of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, the term switched to
sociopath to focus more heavily on the detrimental effect that these people can have on... Show

He also wrote a book entitled Jogging in which he explained how to run for fun and fitness.
During Bowerman s tenure at the University of Oregon, he had coached a young middle distance

Japanese shoes could overthrow German dominance of the U.S. athletic shoe industry. On a trip
to Japan, Knight contracted with the Onitsuka Tiger Company to sell its quality athletic shoes in
the U.S. He made up the name Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) in 1962 and formed a partnership with
Bowerman in 1964, each partner investing $500 in the business (Nike Timeline, 2006).
Bowerman designed most of the prototypes and made suggestions for improvement to the Tiger

his car at track meets. In 1965, Jeff Johnson, Knight s former track competitor at Stanford
University, became the first full time employee of BRS. Under his guidance, BRS opened its first
retail outlet in Santa Monica, California, in 1966 (Nike Timeline, 2006). In the following year, the
company was incorporated. In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student that Knight met at

name Nike, after the Greek goddess of triumph and victory.

The Change Of The East India Company Monopoly
In the four months that he was in England, Say was confronted on the things he saw, the things he
admired and those that he deplored. Still in England, Say was able to make crucial friendship
networks with well known economist such as, David Ricardo, Jeremy Bethem, James Mill and
Thomas Malthus. At the time, he visited Glasgow; he got a chance to sit on the professorial chair
of Adam Smith, and this marked an emotional period in his life. Without a doubt, his perspective of
England could not go without observation and criticism of his fresh acquaintances, particularly
their view on the East India Company monopoly, as well as, the agricultural protectionism of
England via the Corn Laws. However, both of the problem eventually came to an... Show more

It would help them create the basis in which they would get to criticize the decisions of the state.
Say gave lectures at the conservatory for about ten years. It was in the acceptance that he coexisted
in a government that was doubtful of academic critics. During this time, some of the people who
talked about things that the state was not pleased would have their course closed.
Finally, prior to his death, about a year or less, Say was given a political economic chair at the
France College. Say was for the thought that, his discipline should have the name social economy,
as economic policies, and economic laws impacted the society as a whole.
Even though he was not feeling well in his last years of life, Say was still productive and was still
writing, overseeing and lecturing the fifth version of his famous book Treatise which was
published in 1826. Say s wife died in 1830, which led to Say being depressed and lonely. In 1832,
weeks later after his opening lecture at the France College for the opening term, Say died at the
age of sixty five.
Say got credited with more than what came to get known as Say s Law of Markets. Say was
neither the first person nor one of the first people to introduce unique economic concepts into the
paradigm of the classical school. Examples of such concepts are entrepreneur, services, and utility.

Theft is a unique short story in the Porter canon for several reasons. It is the first effort at
incorporating autobiographical elements into her work. Porter developed an intense relationship
with Matthew Josephson, her literary mentor and lover. His wife, after discovering the affair, told
him to choose between them. Josephson chose his wife and wrote Porter a letter detailing the
decision and the fervent hope they could continue working together and remain friends. Porter was

The curtain of the story rises, and Porter s protagonist emerges from her bath to see that her gold
cloth purse is no longer on the bench where she spread it out to dry the night before. As she recalls
the previous evening, trying to discover when it may have gone missing, we learn that she has been
robbed several times either material[ly] or intangib[ly] (85), but not of the purse.
The subtle yet critical thefts of the night before take place, as so many petty thefts can, under
the guise of friendship. As they leave a cocktail party together, her friend, Camilo, insists on
walking her through the rain to the Elevated and in doing so ruins his hat; still, she thinks, he
will associate her with his misery (79), as if his offer to walk her through rain puts her at fault.
Roger, another artist friend, spots her on the steps to the Elevated and offers to take a taxi with
her, but then borrows ten cents, a quarter of all the money she possesses, to pay his fare. Once in
her apartment building, she runs into a playwright who owes her money for writing the third act of

Different Applications For Small And Large Molecules
Q.1 Compare and contrast NDA and BLA. Why are there different applications for small and large
molecules?
A small molecule drug approval required a New Drug Application (NDA) because it covered
under Federal Food Drug and cosmetic Act Section 505 while large molecule drug required a
Biologics License Application (BLA) because it covered under Public Health Service Act Section
351. Compared with conventional small molecule drugs, products derived from a biological source
are structurally complex, large molecules and involved in different manufacturing processes that
require tight control to ensure their safety, purity, quality, and efficacy. Because of these differences

Drugs are nominated as orphan drugs for those diseases with patient population of less than

and marketing of orphan drugs under 21 CFR Part 316.The Orphan Drug Act provides incentives to
organizations to research and test drugs because it have limited commercial returns due to the
small size of the patient group. Companies are taking commercial risks so FDA is providing
assistance in the forms of NDA fee waivers, tax credits for clinical research, and grants for the
research. The FDA also provides market monopoly to the organization to market the drug for seven
years. The office also works on rare disease issues with the medical and research communities,
professional organizations, academia, governmental agencies, industry, and rare disease patient

statement regarding material fact or drug is not eligible as an orphan drug and withdraw marketing
monopoly.

Introduction to ethics
Ethics , in general, is nothing but a principle of conduct. Ethics can also be defined as moral
philosophy which is used to answer questions related to morality. The word Ethics has been derived
from the Greek word Ethos which simply meant the state of being or to keep ones soul pure . The
sub divisions of ethics are as follows;

Consequence Based Ethical Theory: Advocated by Jeremy Banthan
Let us first discuss Utilitarianism, on which, lies the whole development of the consequence based
ethical theory. Utilitarianism can be defined as :
An individual act (x) or a social policy (y) is morally punishable if consequences resulting from
(x) and (y) produce greatest amount of good for the greatest number of persons affected by that
policy .
All the people who believe and abide by the concept of utilitarianism are known as Utilitarian s.
Utilitarian s have always argued that the consequences by an act to the greatest number of
individuals in a given society deserve consideration in moral deliberation. They believe that if an
act produces happiness to the majority of people, then that act should be allowed.

Essay On Frankenstein
Mary Shelley is one of the best known authors of gothic literature. Her most famous work is the
horror novel Frankenstein which she wrote at the early age of 20. Since she was so young when
writing the novel, it is interesting to ask for her ideas and the source of inspiration for the content
of her story. In literary studies, Roland Barthes theory says that the author and so his or her life
should not be the reference point for an analysis (Jannidis et al. 182). Nevertheless in some stories,
the traces of the author are so strong and important that they cannot be ignored when analysing the
story. Therefore, this essay will examine the traces of Mary Shelley s biography in Frankenstein
with reference to mother s death, different places... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shelley s stepmother did not want the children to be highly educated due to her own only
average education. Shelley probably educated herself through reading a lot and the comings and
goings of such rare personalities as Lamb and Coleridge to the house (Sparks 13). This might
serve as an argument why books and reading are often mentioned in Frankenstein. Education is
also important for Victor Frankenstein. He studies in Germany and becomes a scientist with
deep knowledge in this area. Not only for Victor, education also plays a major role for other
characters. For example, Elizabeth is sad because she [has] not the same opportunities of
enlarging her experience, and cultivating her understanding (Shelley 106) when Victor leaves to
visit France, the Netherlands, Scotland and England. So even for a woman, knowledge was
desirable. Due to the lack of a high education, it might be that Shelley was not able to speak any
foreign languages. She might come to terms with it and the probable wish to speak other
languages through the detailed description of the acquisition of a language (Shelley 74 79). In
conclusion, one can see that education played a key role in Shelley s life even if she was not
allowed to take part in it as much as she would have

A New Land Of Opportunity Summary
In both The Last Wilderness Preserve and A New Land of Opportunity , the authors give their own
arguments about how human behavior and actions impact Antarctica. The passage The Last
Wilderness Preserve argues that human behavior and actions have an extremely negative impact on
Antarctica, therefore humans should not be allowed on such precious land. Contradictory to this,
the passage A New Land of Opportunity encourages human activity on Antarcticaand believes that
this can lead to a widespread of incredible opportunities. I believe that the author of A New Land of
Opportunity presents the stronger argument because they explain the reasoning behind their claim
more effectively. Based off of the information given from each passage, I believe that the author...

A Brief Look at Bioethanol Essay
In transport sector, bioethanol is considered a main alternative fuel and there is significant
increase in production from 17 to 86 billion litres over the period 2000 2011 [1]. There is an
expectation to exceed over 125 billion litres by 2020 [1, 2]. Normally ethanol is blended with
petrol with several percentages, either low 5% (E5), 10% (E10) or high 85% (E85) [1].
Production Methods: There are several technologies in producing bioethanol depending on raw
materials, which can be from annual crops (wheat, maize, sugar beet, and potato), herbaceous
perennials (miscanthus, switchgrass and reed canary grass), woody perennials (short rotation
coppice and pine) or residues and wastes (forest Residues, straw and organic municipal waste) [3].

After 2009 each scenario shows different amount of emissions reduction. By using 10% of

and 14.6% of market share. [4] Another study conducted by journal of Applied Energy shows
well to wheel analysis of energy produced from different types of biofuel and their impact on
greenhouse gases emissions. As shown in figure 2, ethanol has lower carbon emissions compared
to gasoline and diesel. Specifically ethanol is made of sugar beet or wood has significantly lower
gCO2 equevlent/km than petrol fuels, while wheat ethanol produces greater emissions since
fertilisers are used in its production process. [3] Other Considerations: In addition to emissions
saving, knocking resistance in gasoline engine is another main advantage of bioethanol since it has
a higher octane rating [1]. However, there are other main issues that should be considered such as:
1.Land availability: specifying the location of these lands, the current usage and the net energy gain
(NEG) per unit area. Furthermore, the consequences of using these lands on food production and
water [5]. 2.Emissions reduction percentage: bioethanol emissions percentage reduction is strongly

Dna Is A Polymer Of Nucleotides
DNA is a polymer of nucleotides, each consisting of three components. These components include a
nitrogenous base, a deoxyribose sugar and a phosphate group. The hydrophobic nitrogenous bases
are in the DNA molecules interior with the negatively charged phosphate groups on the outside.
Strong covalent bonds link each unit of the nucleotide together. Between the stacked pairs Van der
Waals interactions play an important role in holding the molecule together. There are four different
bases called adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. Adenine bonds with thymine and cytosine
bonds with guanine through weak hydrogen bonds. The number of bonds between the pairs differs
however with adenine forming two hydrogen bonds with thymine and cytosine forming three with
guanine. Adenine and guanine are nitrogenous bases with two organic rings and are purines.
Cytosine and thymine are pyrimidines with single organic rings. The backbone of the DNA
molecule is formed as the phosphate group of one nucleotide is attached the sugar of the next.
The DNA molecule is made up of two strands and these strands wind together to form a double
helix. There are ten base pairs per turn of the double helix. The strands are antiparallel and the
polynucleotide strand has directionality from 5 end to the 3 end. LINK

Confederation from 1815 to 1866, see Bundesversammlung (German Confederation). Confederation from 1815 to 1866, see Bundesversammlung (German Confederation). The Bundestag (Federal Diet; pronounced [Л€bК ЉndЙ™staЛђk]) is a legislative body in Germany . In practice Germany is governed by a bicameral legislature, of which the Bundestag serves as the lower house and the Bundesrat the upper house. The Bundestag was established by the German Basic Law of 1949, as the successor to the earlier Reichstag. It meets in the Reichstag Building in Berlin. Norbert Lammert is the current President of the Bundestag. With the new constitution of 1949, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Understandably, the opposition parties are active in exercising the parliamentary right to scrutinize government actions. One striking difference when comparing the Bundestag with the British Parliament is the lack of time spent on serving constituents in Germany. This is in part due to Germany s electoral system. A practical constraint on the expansion of constituent service is the limited personal staff of Bundestag deputies. Despite these constraints especially those deputies that are elected directly normally try to keep close contact with their constituents and to help them with their problems, particularly when they are related to federal policies or agencies. Constituent service does also take place in the form of the Petition Committee. In 2004, the Petition Committee received over 18,000 complaints from citizens and was able to negotiate a mutually satisfactory solution to more than half of them. In 2005, as a pilot of the potential of internet petitions, a version of e Petitioner was produced for the Bundestag. This was a collaborative project involving The Scottish Parliament, International Teledemocracy Centre and the Bundestag Online Services Department . The system was formally launched on 1 September 2005, and in 2008 the Bundestag moved to a new system based on its evaluation.[1] ELECTION : Members serve four year terms; elections are ... • 3. Renaissance Love in Tristan and Iseult Essay Renaissance Love in Tristan and Iseult The modern concept of love owes a great deal to the Humanist tradition of the Renaissance. The humanists focused on perfection and exaltation of this life as opposed to the afterlife. In Tristan and Iseult the seeds of Renaissance love are present in the Middle Ages. To the modern eye, it is a mystery how the period of the Middle Ages produced the seeds of the diametrically opposite Renaissance. Yet it is necessary to understand this transformation if one is to fully comprehend the forces that helped produce the modern consciousness. Courtly Love is a transitional concept that emerged in the Middle Ages. It is transitional because it emerged early and acknowledges God as the creator of love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The individual is nothing compared to the needs of the community. Tristanis even willing to give Iseult the Fair to King Mark: for the life of King Mark, did Tristan by guile and by force conquer the Queen of the hair of gold (37). Tristan is everything a lord could want in a vassal. Yet it is not Tristan s love for King Mark that is what he is remembered for, but his love for Iseult, which is portrayed as higher than the feudal system. The love between Tristan and Iseult clearly violates the social conventions of the Middle Ages. When he falls in love with Iseult, Tristan s initial reaction concerns his duty to King Mark, Iseult is yours and I am but your vassal; Iseult is yours and I am your son; Iseult is yours and may not love me (43). Thankfully, the Love potion that Tristan drinks excuses him from his duty to the king. It is necessary in the Middle Ages to assure that Tristan is not being disloyal. The purity of the love is strengthened by the fact that God sanctifies it, love dropped upon them from high heaven (57). This Love is God given and therefore excused from the restrictions of feudal society. This mirrors the Humanist belief that man was created in God s image, thus it is a form of worship to revere man. After Tristan and Iseult have fallen in love, they exhibit all of the virtues that the Humanists of the Renaissance admired. They focus on the joys of this life instead of focusing on death and the afterlife. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While many different leadership theories have emerged, most can be classified as one of eight major types: great man theories, trait theories, contingency theories, situational theories, behavioural theories, participative theories, management theories and relationship theories. However, I found the trait theories are best applied when talking about Margaret Thatcher.
  • 5. 4.1 An illustration of four theories 17 Trait theory The trait theory of leadership, generally considered the first modern theory of leadership, became popular during the second half of the twentieth century and, despite scholarly criticism, has continued to be popular. The theory states that certain innate traits are common to leaders. Although the identified traits vary, the most common are intelligence, self confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. (Shriberg and Shriberg, 2009) the reason behind choosing this theory to be applied to my chosen leader is that I believe that the abovementioned traits are found in her. Moreover, trait theory remains prevalent today. 4.3 Trait theory application to Margaret Thatcher The trait theory expects leaders to have certain characteristics or traits. Traits are stable transferable across situations. Traits are clearly identifiable measurable prediction. Traits such as: intelligence, dominance, self confident, energetic, task related knowledge. In the 1240s they removed that rule and gave the chance for kids to explore different thing, as they began the search for a young lecturer. Mr. Bacon had been perfect for the job, thus he travelled over to France and began teaching there for several other years. At the years of 1247 Roger has stopped teaching and focused more on his academics, as throughout the rest of his life he made many different discoveries things such as optics, alchemy, and the manufacture of gunpowder, the position and size of celestial bodies, Apocrypha, Calendrical reform,Linguistics, Secret of Secrets, and one of his biggest works Opus Majus.... • 7. The Dangers Of The Standardization Of Education In Schools In his great work of poetry titled In Memoriam A.H.H., Alfred Tennyson (1850) praises his friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, for straying from the city because of the standardization it caused: For ground in yonder social mill / We rub each other s angles down, / And merge he said in form and gloss / The picturesque of man and man (39 42). In these lines Tennyson is drawing attention to dangers of large cities and their tendency to make residents the same rather than valuing people s unique qualities and ideas. Hallam, as Tennyson notes here, abstained from cities in order to preserve his own ideas and creativity. He did not want to be a part of standardized society. This fear of losing ones creativity is not unique to Tennyson s time. In fact, this is a current problem within universities today. Educationhas become extremely standardized and leaves little room for creativity and does not take into account a person s unique abilities, strength, or interests beyond the offered majors. Students are prescribed a generic core curriculum and then required to take a broad range of courses in their field of study. With the modern standardization of education and prescribed course tracks, creativity is stifled in college, where students are bound by unnecessary requirements r simply by the inability to study their areas of interest. The effects of prescribed education are being felt by college students in today s society as the class tracks laid out for them are too broad in scope. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Play Essay The play space is not school, and whilst learning may be an important playwork priority, what is even more important is how the child learns and whether s/he retains control over prioritising what is learnt. Play is a process of trial and error in which the error is as valuable to learning as is the success. Within playwork we generally define playas behaviour which is freely chosen , personally directed and intrinsically motivated (Hughes, 1984). The definition is seen as having authenticity by playworkers because it recognises not only the child centredness of play, but its experimental nature (Eibl Eibesfeldt, 1967, 1970). • 10. Democratic Deficit in the European Union Most voters seem to take the opportunity to give the incumbent national government a good kicking during European elections, as seen in the UK, Spain and France, rather than vote on a broad manifesto of ideas. This is fuelled further by MEPs campaigning on local issues rather than European ones. This is an example of part of the democratic deficit in the European Parliament. To further show how there is a democratic deficit in the European Parliament I will explain how it is largely inaccessible to its European citizens and how the European Parliament lacks the power that it requires to resolve the problems in the Union. I will then describe some unsuccessful attempts at solutions and conclude with some possible future remedies.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The balance between these two branches differed from country to country. With the gradual development of the EEC, more and more areas of public policy were transferred from national governments to the community with the result that the overall powers of the executives within member countries of the EU have increased while parliamentary powers have decreased. The main argument is that the parliament is too weak, while the council is too powerful. The executive branches, the Council and the Commission, are not drawn from Parliament and are thus not accountable to it in the way it would be, for example, in the UK through a vote of no confidence. The two branches are completely separate, which can mean that there is not an effective check as there was meant to be. The Parliament is too weak to hold either of the executive branches to account, meaning that they can pass legislation without the consent of the Parliament, except when co decision applies on matters pertaining to qualified majority voting in the Council. Compared to many national and sub national legislatures, the European Parliament has a relatively low profile. In the past, some scholars of the European Union judged it to be less important than other governing institutions of the Union. However, since the mid 1980 s the European Parliament has undergone many substantial changes, probably more than any other major European Union body. The Parliament s ... • 11. Literature Review In Literature Review Literature Review A study done by Dr. George Reeves (1942) showed that emotional states play an important role in the quality of people s eating habits. He studies five obese white women. Dr. Reeves concluded that (a) obesity was used at a defense mechanism (b) these patterns were sadistic and masochistic (c) oral satisfaction extended beyond social acceptable forms and (d) obesity was used to simulate a masculine ideal. This study was limited because he had only five cases of women, and they were all the same race and around the same age. Hirsch and Morse (1960) presented a study to relate emotions to obesity and establish correlations between metabolic findings from the obese patients in their study. They brought 74 patients to the Victoria General Hospital Outpatient Obesity Clinic. The patients were given a questionnaire that was oriented around their obesity history. The material from the interview were reviewed for symptoms of emotional distress such as depression, anxiety, delusions, etc. 27 of the 74 patients were judged to have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder after the questionnaire was completed. This study however was unreliable because there was no average weighted people to interview as a control, also the people in the study were unprepared to think abstractly, so the physician guided them throughout the questionnaire, which made the data unreliable. Collyer (1974) backed Reeves (1942) conclusions that women may gain weight as a defense mechanism to protect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Importance Of Free Speech And The First Amendment All the time, people are heard protesting about Free Speech , and The First Amendment . What rights are really protected under the First Amendment according to our Constitution? The answer may be shocking. In the United States of America, the concept of free speech is widely called upon to reinforce the legality of offensive spoken words or actions. In reality, not all speech is protected under the First Amendment. Sure, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but where is the line between what opinions are acceptable to be spoken of in public, and what is inappropriate or too offensive. The true answer lies in the definition of the word public. While government run agencies such as public universities have little they can do about what students say, private colleges have virtually no requirements by law. Public universities have very little say in what students are allowed to say or do so long as their speech and actions are reasonable. Reasonable is defined as, for the duration of this essay, that they are not directly threatening to any person or group, they refrain from using fighting words , and they do not take part in slander or libel. Any restriction of reasonable free speech by a public universityis unconstitutional. While public universities have requirements put upon them to allow most free speech, private colleges have no such rules. The only requirements for any private collegeto allow free speech are those put upon themselves by contract, or in few cases, put upon them by their state. Private colleges are private so that they may choose which morals and ideals they put forward and deem important. Although most private universities are not required to allow complete freedom of speech on their campuses, many add an assurance of free speech or some variant of free speech in their handbook. Free Speech Zones have become a popular solution to the ever growing problem of the combination of protesters and easily offended people across the United States. These zones exist in many places and are especially prevalent on college campuses. The intent of such zones is arguably good, to ensure that the purpose of universities remains centered on learning. She walked toward it in a stunned trance knowing this was the key that would open the door to the secret room; if she could only find it. She ran her hands along the seam pushing every inch or so hoping to spring a hidden latch or lock. She went over the entire seam, both sides and the top. The second time around she noticed a gap at the bottom, under the table where the base board was supposed to meet the floor. The seam and the gap at the bottom formed a perfect rectangle around the table and mirror; the shape of a doorway! She began to prod under the table in hopes that she would find a handle or a knob of some sort. She knew this was it, she felt it in her heart. Her frustration was increasing, she was so close and she was getting nowhere. With a cry of exasperation she stood up, leaning against the table without looking into the mirror for fear of seeing the gory vision again. • 16. An Definition Of Domestic Violence Essay The definition of domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, is a multiple or single incidence of abusive behavior that uses oppression, threats, isolation, and fear that often results in psychological and/or emotional trauma. Intimate partner violence is not a specific gender issue; a common assumption is that victims of abusive relationships are only women, which is a false belief. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 4 men have experience some type of psychological and/or physical violence by their partner (2014). Partner abuse, or domestic violence is a big social problem in the United States. Alone in Texas, the NCADV reported that there were 76,704 victims of abuse by current or former spouses. They also reported 114 Texan women were killed by their partners. This is more than 10% of the national total (2015). No matter the age, gender or race, everyone is exposed to this threat. A recent report by the NCADV also reveals that 75% of Texans ranging from 16 to 24 year olds have experienced violence by their partners, or know someone (2015). This is definitely a scary high number. Another common assumption is that it is only the victims the ones who suffer. This is not exactly true. Addams and Alinsky appear to have very different organizing philosophies. Alinsky himself often commented how his methods were so different than those of the settlement houses. These comments however, should have been more directed at what the settlement houses had become and not at the originating principles of Jane Addams Hull House. Jane Addams herself would likely disapprove of the direction that the settlement houses had moved towards. Addams and Alinsky both recognized the importance of listening and learning the needs of the community in order to gain perspective. Addams recognized that when existing social institutions do not provide a reasonable means for citizen participation, those citizens will organize to resist... Similarly, Alinsky viewed his organizations as fully democratic [stating]: This kind of organization can be built only if people are working together for real, attainable objectives (Hamington, 2010). In other words, the death penalty system here in the United States is applied in an unfair manner. When children feel comfortable with us they can separate more easily from their parents, they are more likely to participate in the play and learning activities if they are secure emotionally. While this imagery is unfortunately founded in fact, the third world is not the only area complicit with this heinous practice. Truthfully, we, as a nation are also guilty of propagating this heinous practice. For over a century, this nation s youth were subjugated to exploitation and abuse at the hands of captains of industry in the hopes of extracting every ounce of profit they could. Fortunately, sympathetic individuals recognized the children s need for advocacy and rose to their defense in the form of organized dissent that appealed to the highest powers of this country to fight for those who could not fight for themselves. In this paper, we will look at what exactly child laboris, the circumstances that gave rise to the widespread acceptance of child labor usage, what working condition these children experienced, and how the United Stateseventually made its use illegal. What is Child Labor? Child labor is historically defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development (Hansan, 2013). A bildungsroman is a story of formation, where the main character or characters face their demons. This is significant because these two women meet and rather than becoming enemies as would be expected, they work as a team and live together. Girls are taught to perceive themselves as less gifted by nature because of their anatomical characteristics. Shelley probably educated herself through reading a lot and the comings and goings of such rare personalities as Lamb and Coleridge to the house (Sparks 13). This might serve as an argument why books and reading are often mentioned in Frankenstein. Education is also important for Victor Frankenstein. He studies in Germany and becomes a scientist with deep knowledge in this area. Not only for Victor, education also plays a major role for other characters. For example, Elizabeth is sad because she [has] not the same opportunities of enlarging her experience, and cultivating her understanding (Shelley 106) when Victor leaves to visit France, the Netherlands, Scotland and England. So even for a woman, knowledge was desirable. Due to the lack of a high education, it might be that Shelley was not able to speak any foreign languages. She might come to terms with it and the probable wish to speak other languages through the detailed description of the acquisition of a language (Shelley 74 79). In conclusion, one can see that education played a key role in Shelley s life even if she was not allowed to take part in it as much as she would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. A New Land Of Opportunity Summary In both The Last Wilderness Preserve and A New Land of Opportunity , the authors give their own arguments about how human behavior and actions impact Antarctica. The passage The Last Wilderness Preserve argues that human behavior and actions have an extremely negative impact on Antarctica, therefore humans should not be allowed on such precious land. Contradictory to this, the passage A New Land of Opportunity encourages human activity on Antarcticaand believes that this can lead to a widespread of incredible opportunities. I believe that the author of A New Land of Opportunity presents the stronger argument because they explain the reasoning behind their claim more effectively. Based off of the information given from each passage, I believe that the author... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The passage goes on to keep stating this fact without providing reasoning to support it, causing a weak argument. • 53. A Brief Look at Bioethanol Essay In transport sector, bioethanol is considered a main alternative fuel and there is significant increase in production from 17 to 86 billion litres over the period 2000 2011 [1]. There is an expectation to exceed over 125 billion litres by 2020 [1, 2]. Normally ethanol is blended with petrol with several percentages, either low 5% (E5), 10% (E10) or high 85% (E85) [1]. Production Methods: There are several technologies in producing bioethanol depending on raw materials, which can be from annual crops (wheat, maize, sugar beet, and potato), herbaceous perennials (miscanthus, switchgrass and reed canary grass), woody perennials (short rotation coppice and pine) or residues and wastes (forest Residues, straw and organic municipal waste) [3]. ... By using 10% of biofuel the first and second scenarios present maximum emission reduction of 2.54 % and 4.1% respectively in 2020. Third and fourth scenarios achieving 6% emissions reduction with 23.8% and 14.6% of market share. [4] Another study conducted by journal of Applied Energy shows well to wheel analysis of energy produced from different types of biofuel and their impact on greenhouse gases emissions. As shown in figure 2, ethanol has lower carbon emissions compared to gasoline and diesel. Specifically ethanol is made of sugar beet or wood has significantly lower gCO2 equevlent/km than petrol fuels, while wheat ethanol produces greater emissions since fertilisers are used in its production process. [3] Other Considerations: In addition to emissions saving, knocking resistance in gasoline engine is another main advantage of bioethanol since it has a higher octane rating [1]. However, there are other main issues that should be considered such as: 1.Land availability: specifying the location of these lands, the current usage and the net energy gain (NEG) per unit area. Furthermore, the consequences of using these lands on food production and water [5]. 2.Emissions reduction percentage: bioethanol emissions percentage reduction is strongly ... • 54. Dna Is A Polymer Of Nucleotides DNA is a polymer of nucleotides, each consisting of three components. These components include a nitrogenous base, a deoxyribose sugar and a phosphate group. The hydrophobic nitrogenous bases are in the DNA molecules interior with the negatively charged phosphate groups on the outside. Strong covalent bonds link each unit of the nucleotide together. Between the stacked pairs Van der Waals interactions play an important role in holding the molecule together. There are four different bases called adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine. Adenine bonds with thymine and cytosine bonds with guanine through weak hydrogen bonds. The number of bonds between the pairs differs however with adenine forming two hydrogen bonds with thymine and cytosine forming three with guanine. Adenine and guanine are nitrogenous bases with two organic rings and are purines. Cytosine and thymine are pyrimidines with single organic rings. The backbone of the DNA molecule is formed as the phosphate group of one nucleotide is attached the sugar of the next. The DNA molecule is made up of two strands and these strands wind together to form a double helix. There are ten base pairs per turn of the double helix. The strands are antiparallel and the polynucleotide strand has directionality from 5 end to the 3 end. LINK DNA Replication LINK. Replication of DNA is initiated by proteins that recognise a specific sequence of nucleotides from short stretches of DNA at sites called origins of replication. They ... Creating a Designer Baby One need not be deeply religious or oppose abortion to be troubled by the prospect of a society in which, as bioethicist Alexander Capron puts it, The wanted child becomes the made to order child (Shannon). With rising concerns of building a baby through eugenics and IVF or In Vitro Fertilization, the government, court systems, activists, and public media is starting to take notice. Being able to pick your babies generic make up would be an ethical disaster with a slippery slope into an era where one s child is created by man with build a baby qualities instead of the natural creation of a new life. • 56. Cognitive Disabilities In The Boys Next Door By Tom Griffin How many people do you think are diagnosed with a cognitive disabilities? About one and three percent of the global population. The play The Boys Next Door by Tom Griffin is about four men with cognitive disabilities who live together in a home funded by the government. Lucien and Barry, two of the main characters, have the strongest relationship because Lucien was comforting Barry when he was sad, and Lucien brought Barry a quarter when he was in the institution, and finally, Lucien and Barry never talk bad about each other. Lucien is very caring, and he s there for Barry when he needs him. Barry was talking to Lucien about how worried he was that his dad was coming to visit and Barry says, I think I ll go inside and get ready for bed. That s what I think I ll do.
