While at first glance Maupassant s story Boule de Suif seems to merely be a story of fellow
travelers and their struggles to continue their journey, it in fact presents a more political and
patriotic view of their journey and quarrels. The main characters, all of whom are French, are
crowded together on a stagecoach and begin discussing their distaste and hatred for the Prussians,
and their pride for the heroic acts of the French in the war. While the story begins with pride and
patriotismfor the groups country, it will become apparent by the end that the prostitute Boule de
Suif is in fact the only true patriot of the group. This sense of patriotism found in Boule de Suif
also allows for a very unique insight into the political and economic themes residing within the
story itself. Within the traveling group an odd mix of people come together to make for a very
