Empire Notes
Empire
Niall Ferguson
Introduction * To the British, as to people in the rest of the world, imperialism s golden age is now
considered a stain on human history, an era of slavery and racism and the plunder of native lands and
peoples. The notion that imperialism is inherently evil, and that no empire can be a good empire, is an
axiom in today s geopolitics. * Examines the British Empire from an economic perspective,
controversially concluding that the British Empire was, on balance, a good thing * Globalisation is the
biggest thing that Ferguson thanks the British for * English language and ties to London made it

White Plague * Commerce and conquest by themselves would not have been enough to achieve an
Empire no matter what the financial strength or naval power of the British there had to be colonization
* Ferguson is disinclined to believe in the authorised American view of 1776 as a struggle for liberty
against an evil empire . * The imperialists were already experimenting with schemes for devolution,
and politicians at Westminster imagined that American colonies might settle down into membership of
a prototype Commonwealth , with the monarch as a unifying figurehead. * The battles across the
Atlantic merely extended a conflict at home between Whigs and Tories. This, Ferguson argues, really
was the second British or perhaps the first American Civil War. * Some myths about the American
War of Independence are shattered * Ferguson argues that the revolution , contrary to the conventional
revisionist modern American narrative of freedom and

Obesity Is A Threat For Global Health
Obesity is a major disease which has become a global problem, there are more than 250 million

diseases such as cancer, stroke, and heart diseases, HIV / Aids etc. are mostly caused in the countries

diseases among the people. Such deadly diseases mostly trap those people who are ignorant about the
disease, or the reasons that can cause the disease. Moreover, such people are ignorant of the fact how
to undertake the treatment of such diseases. What factors contribute to it: Some of the factors
inflicting the chronic disease obesity in any human are as follows: Lifestyle: Unhealthy Diet of the

factors or reasons cause these hazardous diseases to occur. This is the most important factor that
inflicts the person with obesity, is the lifestyle of the person. Some of the genetic factors are also the
important for the cause of obesity. If the parents or the previous generation was inflicted by obesity,
then there are huge chances for the patient to be inflicted with obesity. The people those who are not

Neuroprosthetics: A new dimension in restoration of function after spinal cord injury
Abstract
The deformation in the structure of spinal cord after an injury causes the conduction of impulse to be
disrupted and the body functions are lost. This happens relying on the severity of the injury. There are
different devices which have been developed or are under development to restore the body functions
after a spinal cord injury. Neuroprosthetic treatment has a promising future and it is a technology
which can be used to restore motor and autonomic functions and also to get the sensory feedback.
Described here are the neuroprostheses which are currently in different stages of development be it
preclinical, commercialization or testing and it involoves functional electrical stimulators, epidural
and intraspinal microstimulation, bladder neuroprosthesis, and cortical stimulation for restoring
sensation. Following the brief background of the SCI and neuroprosthesis is the chronology of the
developments related to neuromuscular excitation. The electrical stimulation in the form of functional
electrical stimulation (FES) is discussed in detail which can help facilitate and improve upper/lower
limb mobility along with other body functions lost due to injury. The applications and the future
directions are

The Futility Of Immortality Projects
The Futility of Immortality Projects Since the beginning of civilization, man s attempt to seek
immortality and their various immortality projects has been well documented throughout the course of
history. Whether it is Gilgamesh s quest to seek the plant that grants him immortality or the great
pharaohs of Egypt who built giant structures in their name in the hope that decades after their death,
their names will be remembered. As the pseudonymous England based graffiti artist Banksy once said,
They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when
somebody says your name for the last time. The line by Banksy had a beautiful, philosophical
sentiment in his message, which was that regardless of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Smuts, A.) By this I mean that our wants and desires, be it small like completing a course
successfully, or to invent a car, because of the amount of time we ve got on our hands, our goals big or
small will be accomplished and that the amount of things left to be accomplished is finite but the time
we have on our hands is infinite and the day will ultimately end in frustration. In the movie The man
from Earth the main character is immortal and has lived since the stone ages and he holds 3 separate
degrees in different time zones. Yet we soon learn that these degrees mean nothing because the topics
he had studies had since expanded as more material has come to light, hence making it impossible to
stay knowledgeable about the field. This is contrary to the popular belief that he who is immortal
would be the most knowledgeable person in the world. Through this we learn that it is not the man
who is good at recalling information who is remembered. But it is the man who is able to think outside
the box (Socrates) and the one with the original ideas who truly gains immortality. History has proven
to us that while it is those who spread their original thoughts and ideas who are remembered through
history. History has also taught us that original thoughts and ideas can be stolen and the original
owners may be forgotten. Famous examples include Nikola Tesla versus Thomas Edison. Faith has

A Symbol of Girl Power
Sword, armor, banner now the Maid was ready for her first military move (Yeatts, 29). Joan of Arc,
also known as the Maid of Orléans, led an army at the age of eighteen and successfully changed the
tide of the 100 Years War with her cleverness and bravery. Cunning and kind at the same time, Joan of
Arc used her belief in herself and in God to make everyone around her more hopeful for a better
outcome to the war. Born January 6, 1412 in Domrémy France, Joan of Arc began to hear voices at the
age of thirteen. Claiming to be guided by the Archangel Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret, the
Maid set out to Vaucouleurs to at age sixteen to say that she was destined to save France and to
request an escort to go see the heir, or dauphin, Charles VII. Although turned down twice before
Robert de Beaudricourt, the commander of a fortress near Vaucouleurs, gave in to her appeals, Joan of
Arc was insistent. After two years of nonstop effort, she was finally granted permission to journey to
speak with the dauphin. Joan of Arc gave girls in the world today a reason to be proud.
The Maid of Orléans, or La Pucelle d Orléans in French, is a symbol of courage and perseverance; she
was strong, fierce, and beautiful in every way, the beacon of hope for the Armagnacs. She was always
to be found in the thick of the fight, using her lance with expert skill. Everyone who fought alongside

Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir...
Characterization of duck viperin
Introduction:
Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV)
(Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic
infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large
burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90
million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al.
2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total
16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in
direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little
to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when
infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore,
characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during
IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response
of ducks, which will help us to control the virus.
When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation in
some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory

The Apology Of Socrates Analysis
According to Dr. Dave Yount, many Athenians still regret their decision to put Socrates to death to this
day. Is this feeling of regret acceptable? This paper will explore the details surrounding the trial of
Socrates and whether or not he was treated fairly throughout the sentencing process. In The Apology
of Socrates, Plato describes the charges against Socrates as not believing in the gods recognized by the
state, introducing supernatural beings, and corrupting the youth (246. 9 12). By considering Socrates
impiety, internal betrayal of the city, and arrogance and hypocritical words, it should be understood
that the Athenians were just in their verdict and punishment of Socrates.
It is argued that the charges brought against Socrates

Abstract
Resistance to change is always an obstacle for organisation when they try to implementing change.
But what is resistance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore one could argue that resistance to change is not a response or action that aims directly at
change but rather a failure of building a relationship between the management team and the team
members of the organisation. Thus it is the management team responsible as well for the arising of
resistance to change as it is an active participation of the process.
A change is the process of changing the old way or usual way of doing thing and implements a new
way or different path of doing thing and thus change could create fear of the unknown for the
participants (Mintzberg Waters, 1985)6. In order to make change happen, it is important for both
parties, the change recipient and change agent to actively seeking information, feedback, goal and
objective of change. The key word here would be Communication . By being honest to the recipient,
letting them known of the expectation from the change and the beneficial likeliness that change would
bring to personal gain and to the organisation, this would encourage the participant to adopt change
process (Kim Rousseau, 2006)7.
Is cultural difference a source of resistance to change?
Researchers have proved that there is a strong correlation between change success rate and cultural
values/ belief (Kotter, 19958; Schein, 19929). The concept of organisational change is very closely
linked with the culture context (Schein, 1992)10. Even though there is no hard evidence

Star Wars is a science fiction universe, created by the minds of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg,

Trek, Star Wars has becoming ever more popular ever since its first red carpet premiere in 1977. There
are six known movies, 2 different cartoon television series, countless merchandise sold, and much
more. Recently Disney spent $4 billion for the ownership rights of the franchise. Was this a good idea

trilogy, it centers on a young man, finding his role in the fight against the Galactic Empire. The man

Empire. This is what George Lucas created and what Disney plans to build off of. However, the
television series that just finished its seventh season does not follow this timeline. Such example
include the introduction to a padawan, apprentice to a key character, under the teachings of Anakin

there any mention of a padawan to Anakin in any of the movies George Lucas created. Stunts like this

one of some of the reasons how Disney may be ruining a much loved universe. While Star Wars: The

their goal was to inform on things not related to the timeline shown in the movies and to entertain to

Information From The Sales Department
. Now the information from the sales department is important information needed by other
departments like accounting, marketing and payroll. Each database needs to be accessible to various
departments in order for the business to function efficiently. These databases are collected together in
a data warehouse. Dish then uses data mining tools to extract information in order to solve whatever
problem may be at hand. Many departments have what they call foreign keys, which is information
present in multiple locations thus forming a relationship. As an example, payroll needs to know how

The sales agent doesn t have to look up any specifics, the program already knows availably based on
physical location of the customer by their zip code. Dish Networks sling technology is an example of
a mobile agent which allows the customer to watch live TV on almost any mobile device (iPhone,
android phone and computer) ( Dish Network, n.d.). The Payroll Work Center program used by Dish
is an example of a distribution agent, in which the consumer can access and manage paychecks, tax

interment connection. Finally, all of these agent based technologies work together to form a multi
agent system. The multi system is known as Swarm Intelligence, which is the collective behavior of
the group toward one goal, similar to an ant ecosystem (Bonabeau Meyer, 2001). The cohesion of
departments through the multi system agent based technology ensures efficiency.

Essay on Social Networking Sites
Essay on Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites peaked the year 2007. These sites encouraged online social connections. Early
sites such as SixDegrees.com and Friendster allowed people to manage a list of friends. One drawback
to these sites was that they did not offer users the ability to publish content like blogs.
Social networking sites begin with a group of founders sending out messages to friends to join the
network. In turn the friends send out messages to their friends, and the network grows. When
members join the network, they create a profile. Depending on the site, users can customize their
profile to reflect their interests. They also begin to have contact with friends, acquaintances, and
strangers.

The Web site had become the giant among social networking sites. It was the most trafficked site on
the Internet.
MySpace s influence traveled outside of the United States. The company built a local presence in over
twenty international territories. MySpace could be found in places such as the United Kingdom, Japan,
Australia, and Latin America. In a few short years, MySpace had become a worldwide cultural
phenomenon.
SOCIAL NETWORKING BEYOND MYSPACE
The success of MySpace in the social networking arena spurred the development and redesign of
many other online social networks. Some sites appealed to a general audience. Others, such as Black
Planet, LinkedIn, and MyChurch, sought to serve a niche market.
Facebook was one site that emerged as an alternative to MySpace. In February 2004 Harvard student
Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. The site began as a closed network for college students. Closed
networks only allow users to join if they meet certain criteria. In contrast, sites such as MySpace and
Friendster were open social networking sites. Anyone could sign up for an account.
Open and closed social networks have advantages and disadvantages. Open networks foster
interaction between adults and teens. Parents can check up on their teen s profile and decide if they are
comfortable with their child s online image. On the other hand, open access means that profiles are
completely public and can attract unwanted attention.
Closed networks are generally

Nordstrom vs. JCPenney
Introduction On paper, there might not seem much difference between a JC Penney and a Nordstrom.
Both are department stores, so they carry roughly the same merchandise categories. They are large,
and act as anchors in shopping malls all over America. The shopping experience is actually not that
much different between them. Yet, there are subtle differences for those who are willing to search for
them. The differences tend to relate to our concept of social class distinctions. Massey (2007) notes
that all human societies have a social structure that divides people into categories based on a
combination of achieved and ascribed traits (p.1). Obviously, we make use of groupings like gender,
race and religion, but less explored is the degree to which we use social stratification. Ehrenreich
(2001) recounts the story of her journey into the social underclass, starting in the Florida Keys. Florida
is a highly stratified society, with a concentration of high wealth individuals who choose to live in the
state for things like weather and proximity to the ocean, and low wealth individuals whose role is
primarily to serve the upper classes. Thus, money is one of the more important sources of social
stratification in American society. In today s political discourse, this stratification is framed as the 99%
and the 1%, but in reality that framing is overly simplistic. Those within America s middle class
occupy a different social stratification than those who occupy the lower

The Meanings Of A Word By Gloria Naylor
The essay The Meanings of a Word by Gloria Naylor discusses the many definitions of a word and
how its meaning can change according to context and delivery. She made this point by telling a story
of her childhood and the first time she heard the n word used by a white person in a derogatory,
demeaning way. She described her this situation that took place when she was in third grade and a boy
in front of her in math class called her the n word. She had no idea what it meant to be called that in a
negative way because the people she grew up around only used it as positive and empowering. At the

But [she] didn t hear it until it was said by a small pair of lips that had already learned it could be a
way to humiliate [her] (Naylor, 411). This not only supports the fact that the boy had been taught or
heard this word by someone older like a parent, but it is also sad that a nine year old had to be taught
that such a nasty, ugly word was created to make her and people like her feel ashamed and
embarrassed to be black, or that are worth less as human beings, which is absolutely false. That is why
slurs are created though, to make groups of people feel less human . This essay explored the most
infamous slur against the black community. The fact that slurs like this are prevalent in today s society
is extremely upsetting and wrong. There are plenty of racial slurs that are so casually used today, it
makes one s stomach ache in distress. Ableist slurs are even less reprimanded, a high school student

as commonly used are homophobic and anti LGBT slurs. A high school student will hear the f slur and

Matinees musicales were written purposely as a ballet. In the beginning, it was a subito dynamic

the march. This part the ballerinas showed a light but fast footwork. Throughout the composition the
beat was recurring to the movement before it and in some instances it mimic the beat but in lower

Many scholars have written about the particularly intimate connection between food and family
prevalent in Italian American culture. Herbert Gans interprets this to be a legacy of the traditional
Southern Italian peasant culture that the immigrant generation successfully passed down to the
younger generations in America. Thus, the connection is implied to be a transplanted cultural trait.
However, when viewed in light of the social changes in America, this bond was inevitably affected by
the Italians experiences in America. Italian American food culture was a tradition shaped by changes
outside and inside the family. An examination of the Italian American family of the interwar years
(c.1919 1940) demonstrates that the critical role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the character of the period is defined by the experiences of this single generational
grouping. A common set of opportunities and constraints frames these experiences given that each
generation tends to come of age within a short historical time period. The first portion of this essay,
the will focus on the Italian American family of the interwar years. Tracing the development of such a
family demonstrates how intergenerational negotiation was necessary for food to transcend its status
as a marker of social inferiority and point of family conflict and become a unifying family force. As
the large influx of Italian immigrants came to an end in the 1920s, the immigrants bonds with their
home country became weaker and the second generation became numerically predominant. This
change, as Alba points out, shifted the focus of communal concern: The immigrants anxiety about
finding a niche, however temporary, in American society was succeeded by that of passing on a way
of life to the new generation, one whose members were being raised in an environment vastly different
from that which lived on in their parents memories. Accordingly, major generational conflicts erupted
within the Italian American community during the earlier portion of interwar years. The children of
the immigrant generation were socialized under genuinely dual cultural pressures. They were raised in

the victim but also oppressors themselves. In Waiting for the Barbarians by J.M Coetzee and Women
at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi, both Coetzee and Nawal reveals the negative impact of
intolerance on both the intolerant and the victims.
In Waiting, Coetzee reveals how both social group have been negatively effected due to intolerance in
two key moments. The first key moment Coetzee presents the negative effect of othering on the
intolerant occurred when the Colonel is torturing barbarians in the public, a little girl was encouraged
to join the torture. As the author describes, She lifts the cane, brings it down smartly on the prisoner s
buttocks, drops it, and scuttles to safety to a roar of applause (116). In this quote through the use of
descriptive language, the author creates the image of the girl torturing the barbarians by lifting and

Both author presents a type of intolerance as a result of colonization and its effect on different social
groups. It reveals how through applying intolerance to the victims, the intolerant acquires an

audience of the malicious effect of intolerance on both social group to reveal the wrongfulness of

Compare And Contrast Dog And Border Collies
Each dog breed has a varying intelligence quotient, making it harder or easier to train certain dogs. An
individual should consider how patient and steady they are willing to be when it comes to training a
dog and should then apply that to which breed would fit best with their personality. The intelligence of
a dog is based on how quickly and consistently they learn and obey commands, how well they
perform a given task, and how willing they are to learn humanistic jobs. The Border collie is said to be
the smartest dog breed as they learn quickly and have amazing instinct and working ability. They are
known to herd sheep and remain in control of a flock, just as shepherds do. Border collies would
therefore be ideal for a person who isn t willing

Economic Indicators Paper
Economic Indicators Paper
What does it mean when someone refers to the health of an economy? Furthermore, how can one
classify an economy? Americans love to quantify data. Because of this inherent need to compare data,
economists have developed a way to collect nearly every type of statistics that may reveal the general
health of the economy. These statistics actually tell if the economy is productive and efficient or if it is
slow and inefficient. Included in these statistics are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Consumer Price
Index (CPI), Unemployment Rate, Retail Sales, Producer Price Index (PPI), and Personal Income.
Included in this paper, Team A defines the preceding six indicators, and describes their status.
Additionally, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There have been many indicators that have been developed to measure inflation. The CPI measures
inflation as experienced by consumers through their everyday expenses. The Producer Price Index
(PPI) measures inflation during the early stages of business development, such as production and
sales. The best measure of inflation for a given application depends upon how one intends to use this
data. CPI allows businesses to adjust prices based upon a comparison of the current cost of a defined
set of goods and/or services to the cost of those same goods at a time in the past. It is also, the best
measure to use to translate retail sales and hourly earnings into real or inflation free dollars (2005).
The CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation and is sometimes viewed as an indicator of the
effectiveness of government economic policy. It provides information about price changes in the
Nation s economy to government, business, labor, and private citizens and is used by them as a guide
to making economic decisions. In addition, the President, Congress, and the Federal Reserve Board
use trends in the CPI to aid in formulating fiscal and monetary policies.
Retail Sales Retail sales, represent an important component in the economy. Products sold by
companies, such as Target and local retail stores are tracked and reported to the Census Bureau. The
Census Bureau compiles this data on a monthly basis

How Is Henry A Selfless King
Shakespeare in Henry V shows Henry through his life as a king from just becoming king until right
after the battle of Agincourt. King Henry made many people who doubted him and his motives rethink
their initial thoughts. The way he handles issues and conflicts, he quickly makes them realize that he is
not a person to be messed with. Despite the reputation of his younger years, Henry V proves himself a
selfless king. As a young man, Henry had a reputation of being immature because he spent time with
the common people, but Henry disproves this by showing his selflessness for the good of his country.
When he becomes king he shows where his values lie and use his experiences from his earlier years to
better understand the common people. This results in him being able to relate to the common man and
better understand them, and later motivate them when needed. As soon as he came into power he was
recognized as more mature than he was expected to be. The bishops recognized that Henry was a
selfless leader: The courses of his youth promised it not. / The breath no sooner left his father s body
/But that his wildness, mortified in him, / Seemed to die too. (13). It was recognized that he gave up
all of his friendships with the plebeians so that he would follow the proper way to rule as king. His
intentions for becoming friends with the common people in the first place was also selfless, he wanted
to know more about them too, in turn, be a more effective leader, despite the

The Pros And Cons Of Suicide Terrorism
Suicide terrorism does not always have to be an attack on the United States from a different country
with different cultural values. Suicide terrorism can come from American citizens. More current
events are mass shootings by American citizens against their own people. One event is the attack on
Sandy Hook Elementary. This attack was where Adam Lanza started by killing his own mother, and
then moved on to Sandy Hook Elementary where he took the lives of Twenty children and six adults
(Connecticut Shootings Fast Facts, 2017, para. 2). After this act of violence, Adam Lanza committed
suicide. Another more recent mass shooting attack was the mass shooting in Las Vegas. This attack
was carried out by Stephen Paddock. Stephen Paddock, in his attack killed 58 and wounded around
500 people before taking his own life (Yan, Park, 2017). Whether suicide terrorism is being used by
domestic or foreign enemies, the message is clear. They want to hurt innocent people but at the same
time scare the rest of the American people. Also, after these attacks many political battles were
pushed. Whether it be going to war with another country, or making far stricter laws to possess a
firearm and to outlaw certain types of fire arms. These political battles have sparked many debates
among the American people. It seems with the loss of innocent lives, certain groups in America try to
use this to push their own personal views of what America should do to prevent any further acts.

Affirmative Action Should Be Changed or Ended All Together
Affirmative action should be changed or ended altogether
In the late Sixties, Martin Luther King Jr. fought hard for equal rights. Before he was assassinated in
1968, he made a speech about his vision of human equality. I have a dream that my four children will
one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of
their character. (King) The Sixties were a turning point for racial equality. Because of leaders like
King, many blacks and minority groups began to face/win new opportunities that were never before
available. New policies and laws were established to help reverse the detriment to ethnic groups
through years of injustice and prejudice. But is it right to limit other races to ... Show more content on

If we base our decisions on race or gender, we turn our back on the group that truly needs assistance:
the low income family. Race is present in every level of society, the lower class, the middle class, and
the upper class. Then why should middle and upper class minorities benefit today with special
privileges when they may have not been personally affected by discrimination? There are no policies
or procedures of affirmative action that prove an individual deserves special privileges. In theory, a
wealthy minority citizen would receive more advantages in society than an underprivileged or low
income white male. In this case, the underprivileged is in more need, but the determination of the
benefits is solely decided by ethnicity and not by proven hardship or financial need. The Center for
Equal Opportunity has expressed their disapproval of affirmative action specifically because it has
been an unnecessary benefit for wealthy minority business owners. The most disadvantaged group of
Americans are not blacks, Hispanics or women—they are the low income individuals who are
underprivileged.
In addition, affirmative action lowers the standards of excellence. The only quality that has value

think that politicians are so likely to plagiarize others works because they do not have the knowledge

A Experiment On Paramecium Experiment Essay
Paramecium Experiment Introduction The purpose of the paramecium experiment was to observe
competition or allelopathy between two different species of paramecium in the laboratory. Allelopathy
is a way organisms inhibit or affect other organisms when developing in nature. This insures the
survival of one organism against another organism. For instance in plants, some can release a
chemical that enters the environment and inhibits the growth and development of surrounding plants.
Another example in nature is plants developing defenses to prevent herbivores from eating them. This
kind of competition happens in nature when the need for resources is limited and survival is necessary.
Competition is displayed throughout nature all the time. A man named Georgy Gause previously
conducted this experiment between P. aurelia and P. caudatum. He determined that different factors
influence how the two species compete and coexist. Ever since then not many scientist have attempted
to experiment on paramecium. Only until recently have more experiments been attempted. The issue
with the experiment was that it was conducted in 1935 and nowadays there are more advance ways to
conduct and interpret the experiment and results. As previously stated, knowledge on this particular
subject has been limited. Ever since Gause s experiment, not many other scientists have attempted it
until recently. As a class, the experiment was a way to observe competition and better interpret the
results gathered

update students, faculty and stuff of the different locations and dates of such events. In this sense,
NYUADers are literally one click away from being part of a certain meeting or event. However, over
the last few years there have been a noticeable culture of overcommitting and then not attending .
Most of the organized events reach the student population with loud Facebook campaigns and
tempting slogans such as free , yet people still fail to show up when they need to. Could it be that
students fail to attend these meetings due to the overwhelming publicity? It is quite understandable
that freshmen of all classmen are the ones who over commit; they are simply excited to part of the
university life. As freshmen adapt to college routine, they start to realize what

Her main classical source of inspiration is the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, in which, as a
punishment for past crimes, Minos forces Athens to sacrifice seven youths and seven maidens to the
Minotaur, which kills them in a vast labyrinth. Collins says that even as a child, she was stunned by
the idea since it was just so cruel to force Athens to sacrifice its own children.
Collins also cites as a classical inspiration the Roman gladiator games. She feels three key elements
create a good game: an all powerful and ruthless government, people forced to fight to the death, and
the game s role as a source of popular entertainment.
A contemporary source of inspiration was Collins recent fascination with reality television programs.
She says they are like The Hunger Games because the Games are not just entertainment but also a
reminder to the districts of their rebellion. On a tired night, Collins says that while she was channel
surfing the television, she saw people competing for some prize and then saw footage of the Iraq war.
She described how the two combined in an unsettling way to create her first ideas for the series.

Similarities Between Omelas And The Lottery
In the fictional short stories The lottery and The ones who walk away from Omelas the authors convey
that sacrifice is the true key to happiness, prosperity, and livelihood, but both authors hold different
views on how these goals are achieved. In both stories the authors show different types of sacrifice
and how it helps hold together a Utopian society. In Omelas it describes a beautiful town and how
everything is perfect, it talks about how there is a festival and lights with bells and singing, decorated
with silver and gold streamers. From that description it makes this town sound like a year round party
that never ends, but this whole party is depending on the suffering of a small child. It could be a boy
or a girl. It looks about six, but actually is nearly 10. It is feeble minded. Perhaps it was born
defective, or perhaps it has become imbecile through fear, malnutrition, and neglect. It picks its nose

4-Seam Fastball Essay
In the game of baseball, the goal of the pitcher is to render the ability of the batter to effectively hit the

velocities on the pitches that they throw. The hardest of these pitches is agreed upon as the 4 seam
fastball. Many pitchers throw this pitch in the range of 90 to 95 miles per hour but as of recently many
pitchers have been reaching the triple digit mark. Recently, as more research into the science, and
specifically the physics of baseball pitching has been done, intellectuals in the sports science

By moving the way in which his fingers are placed on a ball, the pitcher can change the type of pitch
that he is throwing. There are multitudes of different types of pitches that pitchers throw such as
fastballs, pitches in which velocity is the main focus of the pitcher throwing it, and off speed pitches,
pitchers where the movement of the pitch is more important to the pitcher than the velocity of the
pitch. In the category of fastballs the 4 seam fastball is generally regarded as the fastest pitch available
in the arsenal of the pitcher. It is held with the index and middle fingers across the seam of the
baseball and thrown with a downward motion to maximize velocity. Along with these different types
of pitches there are also different ways in which to throw them. Some pitchers throw the ball in a
submarine style, or a style in which the pitchers releases the ball with their arm close to the ground,
almost underhanded in motion. This throwing motion typically leads to decreased velocity as
compared with an overhanded throwing motion, but more movement on the pitches and a higher rate
of deception. To maximize velocity most pitchers throw almost completely overhand or in a 3/4 arm
slot in which the arm is slightly skewed from the head and outstretched from the

We are still students but almost everybody of us has been working somewhere. I have few simple

you think are the most important aspects to a job?
A good first step towards understanding what motivates people is to ask What do people want from
their jobs? We might answer, money or power but really it is very difficult to judge because depending

Now they ruled supreme Notion of imitation, founded on the premise of copying others White Plague * Commerce and conquest by themselves would not have been enough to achieve an Empire no matter what the financial strength or naval power of the British there had to be colonization * Ferguson is disinclined to believe in the authorised American view of 1776 as a struggle for liberty against an evil empire . * The imperialists were already experimenting with schemes for devolution, and politicians at Westminster imagined that American colonies might settle down into membership of a prototype Commonwealth , with the monarch as a unifying figurehead. * The battles across the Atlantic merely extended a conflict at home between Whigs and Tories. Whether it is Gilgamesh s quest to seek the plant that grants him immortality or the great pharaohs of Egypt who built giant structures in their name in the hope that decades after their death, their names will be remembered. Joan of Arc, also known as the Maid of Orléans, led an army at the age of eighteen and successfully changed the tide of the 100 Years War with her cleverness and bravery. Cunning and kind at the same time, Joan of Arc used her belief in herself and in God to make everyone around her more hopeful for a better outcome to the war. Born January 6, 1412 in Domrémy France, Joan of Arc began to hear voices at the age of thirteen. Claiming to be guided by the Archangel Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret, the Maid set out to Vaucouleurs to at age sixteen to say that she was destined to save France and to request an escort to go see the heir, or dauphin, Charles VII. Although turned down twice before Robert de Beaudricourt, the commander of a fortress near Vaucouleurs, gave in to her appeals, Joan of Arc was insistent. After two years of nonstop effort, she was finally granted permission to journey to speak with the dauphin. Joan of Arc gave girls in the world today a reason to be proud. The Maid of Orléans, or La Pucelle d Orléans in French, is a symbol of courage and perseverance; she was strong, fierce, and beautiful in every way, the beacon of hope for the Armagnacs. • 7. Characterization Of Duck Viperin And The Natural Reservoir... Characterization of duck viperin Introduction: Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) and other waterfowl are the natural reservoir of Influenza A virus (IAV) (Webster et al. 1992). IAV may cross the species barrier from the reservoir species causing sporadic infections in other avian or mammalian species (Webster et al. 1995). These infections impose a large burden on human and animal health worldwide leading to economic losses; In humans, in 2008, 90 million new influenza infections resulted in an estimated 28000 115000 deaths worldwide (Nair et al. 2011), in birds, in 1999, Italy experienced a HPAI epidemic caused by an H7N1 virus subtype. In total 16 million birds were culled and the estimated loss was about € 507 million, with € 112 million in direct losses and € 395 million in consequential losses (Sartore et al. 2010). Ducks often display little to no disease symptoms after IAV infection. They stimulate a robust innate immune response when infected with HPAI by up regulating many innate immune genes (Vanderven et al. 2012). Therefore, characterization of innate immune genes of ducks, particularly the genes that are upregulated during IAV infection, might give insight into the relationship between IAV and the innate immune response of ducks, which will help us to control the virus. When exposing the mallard ducks to the highly pathogenic IAV (H5N1), there was an upregulation in some innate immunity genes; one of the highest upregulated gene was viperin (Virus inhibitory protein, ... But what is resistance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore one could argue that resistance to change is not a response or action that aims directly at change but rather a failure of building a relationship between the management team and the team members of the organisation. Thus it is the management team responsible as well for the arising of resistance to change as it is an active participation of the process. A change is the process of changing the old way or usual way of doing thing and implements a new way or different path of doing thing and thus change could create fear of the unknown for the participants (Mintzberg Waters, 1985)6. In order to make change happen, it is important for both parties, the change recipient and change agent to actively seeking information, feedback, goal and objective of change. The key word here would be Communication . By being honest to the recipient, letting them known of the expectation from the change and the beneficial likeliness that change would bring to personal gain and to the organisation, this would encourage the participant to adopt change process (Kim Rousseau, 2006)7. Is cultural difference a source of resistance to change? Researchers have proved that there is a strong correlation between change success rate and cultural values/ belief (Kotter, 19958; Schein, 19929). The concept of organisational change is very closely linked with the culture context (Schein, 1992)10. Even though there is no hard evidence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Both are department stores, so they carry roughly the same merchandise categories. They are large, and act as anchors in shopping malls all over America. The shopping experience is actually not that much different between them. Yet, there are subtle differences for those who are willing to search for them. The differences tend to relate to our concept of social class distinctions. Massey (2007) notes that all human societies have a social structure that divides people into categories based on a combination of achieved and ascribed traits (p.1). Obviously, we make use of groupings like gender, race and religion, but less explored is the degree to which we use social stratification. Ehrenreich (2001) recounts the story of her journey into the social underclass, starting in the Florida Keys. Florida is a highly stratified society, with a concentration of high wealth individuals who choose to live in the state for things like weather and proximity to the ocean, and low wealth individuals whose role is primarily to serve the upper classes. Thus, money is one of the more important sources of social stratification in American society. He was an amazing president, he abolished slavery and don t forget that his nickname was Honest Abe . I think you don t have to have a piece of paper to prove how smart you are. Electing these graduated politicians are bogus and they clearly seem to think that they re too smart for their own good and no one will notice. I don t think there are ANY different consequences regarding plagiarism. Whether you re in in college or have already graduated college. If you are caught plagiarizing you suffer the same consequences. You don t receive your credits and you don t graduate or in Walsh s situation you get your degree revoked. That s it. Period. The end. He deserves it. As everyone says, Fool me once shame on me (The Army War College) But fool me twice shame on you (John ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The opposite actually occurred; whereas fans continue to attend the games in mass numbers, even a greater amount continue to watch games throughout the week, quite frequently Mid American Conference games, and the weekend, with some Eastern Time zone fans watching till Sunday morning to see the west coast games. In 1984, The Associated Press estimated that the new landscape of television rights would generate $43.6 million. • 30. A Experiment On Paramecium Experiment Essay Paramecium Experiment Introduction The purpose of the paramecium experiment was to observe competition or allelopathy between two different species of paramecium in the laboratory. Allelopathy is a way organisms inhibit or affect other organisms when developing in nature. This insures the survival of one organism against another organism. For instance in plants, some can release a chemical that enters the environment and inhibits the growth and development of surrounding plants. Another example in nature is plants developing defenses to prevent herbivores from eating them. This kind of competition happens in nature when the need for resources is limited and survival is necessary. Competition is displayed throughout nature all the time. A man named Georgy Gause previously conducted this experiment between P. aurelia and P. caudatum. He determined that different factors influence how the two species compete and coexist. Ever since then not many scientist have attempted to experiment on paramecium. Only until recently have more experiments been attempted. The issue with the experiment was that it was conducted in 1935 and nowadays there are more advance ways to conduct and interpret the experiment and results. As previously stated, knowledge on this particular subject has been limited. Ever since Gause s experiment, not many other scientists have attempted it until recently. As a class, the experiment was a way to observe competition and better interpret the results gathered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Collins also cites as a classical inspiration the Roman gladiator games. She feels three key elements create a good game: an all powerful and ruthless government, people forced to fight to the death, and the game s role as a source of popular entertainment. In Omelas it describes a beautiful town and how everything is perfect, it talks about how there is a festival and lights with bells and singing, decorated with silver and gold streamers. From that description it makes this town sound like a year round party that never ends, but this whole party is depending on the suffering of a small child. It could be a boy or a girl. In order to do this many Major League Baseball hitters employ the use of high velocities on the pitches that they throw. The hardest of these pitches is agreed upon as the 4 seam fastball. Many pitchers throw this pitch in the range of 90 to 95 miles per hour but as of recently many pitchers have been reaching the triple digit mark. There are multitudes of different types of pitches that pitchers throw such as fastballs, pitches in which velocity is the main focus of the pitcher throwing it, and off speed pitches, pitchers where the movement of the pitch is more important to the pitcher than the velocity of the pitch. In the category of fastballs the 4 seam fastball is generally regarded as the fastest pitch available in the arsenal of the pitcher. It is held with the index and middle fingers across the seam of the baseball and thrown with a downward motion to maximize velocity. Along with these different types of pitches there are also different ways in which to throw them. Some pitchers throw the ball in a submarine style, or a style in which the pitchers releases the ball with their arm close to the ground, almost underhanded in motion. This throwing motion typically leads to decreased velocity as compared with an overhanded throwing motion, but more movement on the pitches and a higher rate of deception. To maximize velocity most pitchers throw almost completely overhand or in a 3/4 arm slot in which the arm is slightly skewed from the head and outstretched from the ...
