and is subject to social abjection . In Judith Butler s Gender Trouble, she identifies a need for a new
interpretation of gender against the previous regime of gender hierarchy and compulsory
heterosexuality. In this essay, I will argue that Judith Butler s approach to gender politics is an
improvement on previous attitudes towards homophobia. I will do this through a close contextual
reading of Butler s work, particularly Gender Trouble and her article Imitation and Gender
Insubordination. Butler calls for a more fluid, variable interpretation of gender that would strive for a
new equality where subjects are not restricted to notions of masculinity or femininity . Butler herself
