A Thousand Years Of Good Prayer
Deeper Than Words: Communication in A Thousand Years of Good Prayer, by Yiyun Li There are
those who have a difficult time expressing themselves with words. It is as though there is a
communication barrier between people even if they are speaking the same language. The struggle for
successful communication can be even harder if different languages are spoken. Even if there are no
words spoken, communication between two people still occurs. Yiyun Li s short story A Thousand
Years of Good Prayer offers an excellent study in communication. This study includes examples of
communication barriers and the successful aspects of communication revealing the ultimate theme:
communication does not need to be verbalized to have a relationship ... Show more content on

In the same way the language barrier hinders conversation. Mr. Shi knows little English and mostly
speaks in Chinese. This hinders true communication between him and Madam, a woman he meets in
the park He feels that sometimes they run out of English (406). When there are no more English words
to be said, both revert to their native language. Neither Mr. Shi nor Madame truly understands what is
being said. Mr. Shi wishes at times to communicate to Madam in English: But he is sure, even before
he starts that his English would fail him (406). This struggle for words indicates the lack of
communication between him and Madam, but it also indicates the language barrier between him and
his daughter. He speaks primarily in Chinese, and while his daughter knows Chinese, she prefers to
speak English: It s different Baba. We talk in English, and it s easier. I don t talk well in Chinese (413).
His daughter does not like speaking in Chinese, and Mr. Shi struggles to converse in English. This
problem undermines their relationship. Even though verbal communication is lacking, nonverbal
communication is evident. Mr. Shi notices, her eyes behind her glasses, wide open and unrelenting,
remind him of her younger years (408). He notices his daughter s curiosity and need for an answer
even though few words are said. He is aware of her need, but he refuses to tell her the truth. Mr. Shi s

Summary Of The United Fruit Co. By Pablo Neruda
The United Fruit Co has driven Pablo Neruda Bananas! The Pablo Neruda s, The United Fruit Co., a
free verse poem, published in 1950, emphasizes the domination of the United Fruit Company amid the
Columbian people. Pablo Neruda s The United Fruit Co. is able to greatly describe what happened to
the Colombian people when the Chicago based United Fruit Co. destroyed his home and his people.
The United Fruit Co., was very successful in Columbia, due to its location in the Banana Republic and
the poor hardworking people of Columbia. The poem deplores the exploitation of the Latin American
countries by North American companies. Throughout the poem Neruda is able to bring to the surface
the issues of corruption that big, greedy, and wealthy companies, such as the United Fruit Co, bring to
small, poor, hardworking countries in Central America with the use of allusions and imagery.
Neruda organizes the poem into four stanzas that follows Neruda s stream of consciousness. Each
stanza represents events that occurred during the reign of the United Fruit Co. The first presents the
scene after the creation of the world and the birth of the different companies. The second talks about
the dictatorship in South and Central America. The third presents the entrance of the United Fruit
Company and the last presents the consequences people face from the arising of the said company
(Bayug Web). As Neruda mentions, When the trumpet sounded everything was prepared on earth, and

one kind of cultural heritage. The scale of construction for the craftsman must consider the division of
building materials, on the contrast, the industrial product only cares about the efficiency and the coast.
The lamp of memory, architects have responsibility to reflect the local culture and the resident s

Esperanza As A Cultural Melting Pot
ESPERANZA 2
Esperanza Rising Literary Analysis The United States of America is a cultural melting pot; as a result,
there are many stories of those who have immigrated into the land. Pam Munoz Ryan has written a
story similar to other s who ventured into California, in Esperanza Rising. Her focus is her own
grandmother s life and experience as an immigrant from Mexico in the 1900 s. By using the
characterization literary device Ryan conveys the importance of family through the protagonist s
growth in the story. There are many people who may live a comfortable life with stability; however,
they may face a situation that will force them to reinvent themselves and start over in a new land.

Unfortunately, the death of Esperanza s father forces her to flee to California and she is forced leave
everything behind and live amongst those who are below her. Esperanza travels to California with her
mother and previous servants Hortensia, Miguel, and Alfonso. The first main encounter Esperanza
experiences of growth is an encounter with a poor girl who wants her doll. Her reaction was to hide
her doll instantly because this doll was her last gift from her father and the little girl ... is poor and
dirty (pg. 70). She is surprised that her mother apologizes to the child s mother. Therefore, the author
creates this scene to be the first lesson of kindness Esperanza experiences because her mother makes a
yarn doll for the crying child. Although, she is relieved that they get off at the next stop because she
doesn t want to be reminded of her selfish behavior (pg. 72). The reader becomes aware of just how
rich and spoiled Esperanza was because she sees an innocent poor child to be so repulsive to her. The
author writes about the character s relief when the child is gone because it proves that she has not
changed and is still entitled. However, this event is the first step in Esperanza s realization and
awareness of her selfish ways because she acknowledges that her behavior was selfish. Moreover, they
begin their new life in Arvin, California in a farm workers camp and Esperanza must

Bill Beichick Persuasive Speech
At several points throughout someone s life, it is guaranteed that accusations will be made against
them. Some may be true, others may be false, but when they are made it is up to the accused to prove
themselves innocent. Within the past ten years, former Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich, and Head
Coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick faced adversity which came along with accusations
made against them. With the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, otherwise known as the three rhetorical
appeals, both gentlemen attempted to persuade others to believe in their innocence. After reading both
situations it is evident that by using his credibility, being very informative to his discourse community,
and sharing intellectual and emotional experience, Bill Belichick was far more successful in
accomplishing his persuasive purpose.
The ethos appeal is the author s persuasive power to use credibility in a rhetorical situation. Within his
press conference, Rob Blagojevich s tone in addressing the topic at hand suggests to the audience that
he is strong and confident in his words. By saying, I m not going to quit a job the people hired me to
do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob (Blagojevich 1), he attempts to gain
credibility by remaining firm and reminding the people of Illinois that they are the ones who voted for
him to be governor. He is implying that since they trusted him enough to elect him as the
representative of their state, they should have the

The Stata And Hlm Software
The HSLS data was collected through a stratified two stage sampling process. That is, 944 schools
(including public, private, and charter schools) were sampled in the first stage and in the second stage
25, 206 students selected in 50 states in the District of Columbia (Ingels et al., 2011, 2014). There
were approximately 27 students selected per school. To cater for the complex sampling, the data
include weights (students weights, parent weights, teacher weights, counselor weights, and school
weights) that should be used to account for the sampling and non response at the two stages of the data
collecting process. For these reasons STATA and HLM software will be used in the data analysis
process because these software can be used with weights and correction of standard error. The HSLS
has missing data that has been cleaned and the analysis process made easier because the data includes
variables in which imputation methods (weighted sequential hot deck [WSHD] were used to replace
the missing data (see Ingels et al., 2011, 2014). To answer the first research question that examines the

Benefits Of Photography Essay
The Benefits of Photography
Everywhere people go they are likely going to notice a piece of photography. Even it were to be
projection of a image on a screen, a painting on a building or just a printed image in a shop window.
Although there are many genres of photography such as monochrome, satellite, underwater, and
panoramic, the main focus on in this project is digital photography. Digital photography is a form of
photography that uses cameras containing arrays of electronic photodetectors to capture images
focused by a lens. (Wikipedia Dictionary, December 22, 2016) The subject being focused on are the
beneficial aspects of photography among students. Consistently we find the benefits of photography.

Parents often enjoy getting a glimpse of what is going on in their child s class. These photos are great
to put on display at a student conference. Create a book, a digital book or photo album for parents to
look at while they are waiting for their turn to talk to the teacher. By taking the time to document the
learning, you re reminding them just how important they are. There are hundreds of possible ways a
camera can add to the aid in the learning environment in the classroom. It doesn t need to be another
chore for the teacher, they can enlist the help of their students by turning it into a fun assignment using
instant cameras. Photography centered activities also empower students to create and communicate
with others, develop self esteem while breaking down cultural and emotional barriers. (Zahra 2013)
Emotional Aspects
Digital photography allows a person to express themselves. Through portrait photos, a person s
emotions are shown, this helps understand yourself and others. When it comes to digital photography,
the camera is there to document an image and catching a special moment to help preserve family ties
that are easily forgotten. (Zen Agency 2016) Digital photography helps capture and secure the
memories leading to happiness and well being among families. Having historical family photos helps

Reliability Is Defined, Within Psychometric Testing
Reliability is defined, within psychometric testing, as the stability of a research study or measure(s).
Reliability can be examined externally, Inter rater and Test Retest, as well as internally; which is seen
in internal consistency reliability methods. It s best to establish inter rater reliability outside of the
context of the study s measure. If the reliability is incorporated in the measure and is extremely low,
this can cause serious issues for the researchers going forward. It is highly recommended that a pilot
study be done to establish the inter rater reliability. It is also a good idea to periodically assess the inter
rater reliability if the study will be conducted for an extensive amount of time. There is a difference in
how to assess categorical versus continuous measures inter rater reliability. If the measure is a
compilation of categories, then the researchers could have the raters mark each category that is
applicable to the observations. From those selections, the research team should calculate the
percentage of agreement among the raters. However, the research team could also calculate Cohen s
Kappa, for a more stable percentage. Cohen s Kappa Cohen s Kappa states: where Pr(a) is the
observed agreement among raters, and Pr(e) is the conjectural likelihood of chance agreement, using
the observed data to calculate the probabilities of the raters hypothetically choosing each category.
With this calculation, if the raters are in complete agreement then

The Repeated Failure of the League of Nations in Keeping...
The Repeated Failure of the League of Nations in Keeping Peace
The League of Nations repeatedly failed in keeping the peace because, first of all Hitler went against
the Treaty of Versailles and started World War 2 yet the League of Nations failed to react. The Treaty
of Versailles also failed because Mussolini in Abyssinia went against the league and Manchuria also
contributed towards the failure to keep the peace. The structure of the league didn t help as the
council only met once a year. The power of the league was very weak as there was no military force.
Finally the lack of strong nations joining the league contributed to the failure of the League of
Nations.

The League of Nations also failed because Mussolini, a dictator from Italy, prepared to invade
Abyssinia. Abyssinia then asked the League for help; while the League of Nations talked to Mussolini
he used the time to send an army into Africa. The League of Nations then suggested giving Abyssinia
to Italy. Mussolini ignored the League of Nations and invaded Abyssinia. In secret however Britain
and France agreed to give Abyssinia to Italy, the Hoare Laval Pact.
Manchuria became a factor or the failure of the League of Nations in 1932 when the Japanese army
invaded Manchuria and threw out the Chinese residents. They then set up their own government called
the  Manchoukuo . When china asked the League of Nations for help it sent a group of officials led
by Lord Lytton to study the problem, this however took a year, but in February 1933 they ordered
Japan to leave Manchuria.
However Japan refused to leave Manchuria and instead left the League of Nations. As many countries
had important trading links with Japan the League of Nations couldn t agree on sanctions or even
ban weapon sales. Britain and France didn t want a war therefore nothing was done. This showed the
League of Nations as weak and powerless therefore adding to the failures and breakdown of the
League of Nations.

Causes And Effects Of Anthropogenic Ecosystems
Anthropogenic activity has affected a large number of ecosystems in the world including the earth s
oceans. Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) have been escalating since the rise of the
industrial revolution and are now at a far more prominent rate than previously experienced in the
Earth s history primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (Wood et al., 2008). The concentration of
CO2 in the Earth s atmosphere now surpasses 380 parts per million (ppm), which is more than 80 ppm
over the highest values of the past 740,000 years (Hoegh Guldberg et al., 2007). As a result, the
oceans have absorbed approximately 25% to 30% of the CO2 in the atmosphere acting as carbon sinks
and decreasing the rate of CO2 rise in the atmosphere, which has had a direct effect on the ocean s
chemistry (Logan, 2010). This results in the most prominent phenomena known as ocean acidification,
which worsens day to day as CO2 enters the oceans at a more noteworthy rate than ever before,
diminishing the ocean s natural buffering capacity and lowering the pH (Wood et al., 2008). This is
documented to have a significant threat to marine species. As CO2 enters the ocean and comes in
contact with the water, it reacts and changes the chemical properties of the ocean itself (Wood et al.,
2008). This process produces carbonic acid that breaks down into bicarbonate, carbonate, and
hydrogen ions that increase the acidity. The ocean s pH commonly ranges between 7.8 and 8.2, yet,
recent studies show that

Descriptive Essay About A Old House
It was a dark and spine chilling night and my friends and I stumbled across a really creepy house. This
old house was big and did not have any windows to peek inside of it. I also thought that it looked very
ominous, sinister, and abandoned. My friends wanted to check the house out, but I didn t want to go
in. I thought the house looked eerie and ghastly, but they said, you ll be fine your just a chicken. I
wanted to shriek it looked so scary, but instead, I said, I am not a chicken, I ll show you. I went into
the house by myself... there were COBWEBS, SPIDERS, and BUGS OH MY! I suddenly heard my
friends outside talking and I came out to see what the commotion was all about? They were shaking
and said, we don t want to go into the house anymore, so I said, ok then just stay outside in the dark
and wait for me to finish looking around the house and then we can leave. I said, it may take a little bit
for me to finish looking in the house, but they said, that s ok. I finished our conversation and then I
went back into the house. When I went back into the house, I heard something say DO NOT GO ANY
FURTHER in a belligerent way. I was paralyzed when I heard something say that, I thought that was
kind of an irrational and debacle way of saying it, but I don t think they meant to say it in a malicious
way. I then heard something say YOU SHALL NOT GO ANY FURTHER! the second time, they then
started to say it incessantly, it kind of got annoying. Then something said, ARE

Optimism The Most Powerful Thing In The World
Optimism is a powerful thing. We know it more commonly as hope. Hope empowers us, and lets us
press on even in the face of defeat. However, having too much of it can be dangerous. The Jews for
example, during World War II, they had too much hope, and they wound up dead. Allow me to
expand. As I said before, optimism (hope) is the most powerful thing in the world, with the second
being fear. However, having too much of it is very dangerous. Too much hope can cause people to
have tunnel vision. Hope can restrict the ability to notice, or recognize the things that are going on
around them. People can get caught in a feeling of unending optimism, and therefore miss important
things like hazards, or dangerous things that could be occurring around them. ... Show more content

The beginning of their optimism began even before the Nazi s captured their cities. An example of this
would be from the book entitled Night . The main character s city (Jewish), heard that some of the
other Jewish cities in their country, had been captured by the Nazis. The citizens of the main character
s city thought that they would be safe, and that the Nazis would not invade their city. They believed
that God would save them, therefore, they did not take any action to protect them from the Nazis and
from having their city captured by them. If they would have taken preventative measures, like
escaping their city, they could have prevented being captured by the Nazi s. Jews were blinded with so
much optimism that they did nothing to protect themselves. They carried on with the belief that they
would not have their cities invaded, and that they would therefore remain safe. While this is not the
case with all Jews, this is the many

Shock, Hemorrhagic And Non Hemorrhagic
Shock is described as a state of hypoperfusion of the organs and tissues, which results in cellular
dysfunction and cell death. There are many varieties of shock, but for the purpose of this essay I will
focus on hypovolemic shock. The term hypovolemic means low volume; this term in and of itself tells
us what the root cause of this form of shock is, low blood volume. There are two different types of
hypovolemic shock, hemorrhagic and non hemorrhagic. I will be discussing the possible causes, signs,
symptoms, and treatment options for the hemorrhagic type. I will also explain what health care
providers in the field should be looking for to determine whether the patient is in a state of
compensated or decompensating shock. Compensated shock is when the body is using all of it s
resources to maintain perfusion but in the later stages of shock the patient will decompensate, this is
when the body s attempts at maintaining perfusion are beginning to fail. Recognizing the signs and
symptoms of hypovolemic shock early is vitally important! The first thing that emergency medical
providers should remember is that just because you can t see bleeding does not mean it is not there.
Hemorrhagic shock can be missed if the care provider is hyperfocused on symptoms like low blood
pressure, which only becomes evident after the patient has already started de compensating. A
symptom that can be seen earlier on, while the patient is still in a compensated state is decreased

In 1949 Alfred Jones created the first hedge fund in the United States with $100,000 and a strategy to
off set the riskiness of holding long position in stocks by shorting other stocks. Since then hedge funds
have grown to control over $2.4 trillion in assets in over 11,000 different funds. Today hedge funds
employ many different techniques and strategies to gain a positive return that actually do not involve
hedging but instead taking a more risky stance in the market to obtain higher returns. Hedge funds are
predominately funded by wealthy investors and pensions but does this mean that they are a safe
investment to make? If I had the ability to invest in a hedge fund I would decline to do so. My
reasoning for this is that while some risky investors believe the high risk high return, lack of
regulation, illiquidity, and fees associated are the advantages of hedge funds that allow them to
generate high returns, from a conservative investor viewpoint these are all disadvantages and risks that
aren t compensated for making investments in hedge funds an unwise decision.
The first advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint is the high risk and high return
associated with hedge funds. Hedge funds allow investors opportunities to seek a return on investment

These five labels control about 80% of the market share in the record industry (Brown). The article

Sony announced its intentions to buyout BMG, while EMI announced it d do the same with Warner

Elizabeth Warren The Vanishing Middle Class Analysis
Debt in America now has grown to be at the highest it has been compared to the decades before.
People now spend tremendous about of money now then they have many years prior. Many people
today have borrowed money that they can not seem to pay back, which debt begins to accumulate and
may cause distress in many lives. Basically now there is no one preserving their own money, they re
are just spending their hard earned money. Elizabeth Warren, formerly a U.S. senator and also a
teacher, addresses the middle class in her essay called the vanishing middle class . There are abundant
of good ideas that she states in her essay. Elizabeth Warren is very effective in her argument because
of three concepts that stand out the most were having high incomes but at a price, savings and debt,
how different we use our money now compared with how we have in the past. Incomes now and back
then have changed tremendously. In her essay the vanishing middle class Elizabeth Warren states The
answer is that the typical man working full time, after adjusting for inflation, earns about $800 less
than his father earned in the early 1970s. After decades of rising incomes earlier in the twentieth
century, about thirty years ago wages for men have flatlined . This shows that even though incomes
have increased and changed over time people are still making less money than their parents have done
due to wages not being increased for 30 years and due to the facts the people spend more on things

An Interview With Andrea Williams, Principal Of Elena...
Using Strategic Planning
This information was gathered in an interview with Andrea Williams, Principal of Theresa Bunker
Elementary. In the past three years that Mrs. Williams has been principal of this school she has
brought a strong focus onto using data to make appropriate instructional decisions as well as execute
strategic planning to help the school progress. The implementation of the PLC process has helped the
teachers to gain an understanding of how valuable data collection and analysis can be for their
teaching practice. Looking at data also helps the school attain the yearly goals laid out by the district s
strategic plan. One of the first steps taken in developing a strategic plan for the school is to gather and
analyze data in order to find the school s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities for growth as well as
any threats to the progress of the school. Early in the year the strategic planning team will review
quantitative data collected from student achievement scores, attendance rates, discipline trends,
financial records, transportation reports, and so forth. Depending upon the specific issue addressed in
the planning process, these types of quantitative data serve to inform decision making processes. The
collection of qualitative data is also an integral part of best practices in development of a strategic
plan. Qualitative data collection includes use of surveys, focus groups, and interviews with key
stakeholder groups. It is important and useful to

Sumer Civilization Characteristics
I think that all civilizations must have a stable food supply, technology, a writing system, a social
structure, government, form of art or architecture, and religion to be considered a civilization. The city
state, Sumer, has all of these qualities of a civilization, so in my opinion Sumer was a civilization. The
first and in my opinion, most important quality of a civilization, is stable food supply, all of the
artifacts that we looked at in class indirectly show that Sumer had a stable food supply, they show that
because without a stable food supply people wouldn t have the time to make these things and

drank from the colored drinking fountain. You can see her dad helping her drink water. You can see
she has three other little sisters. I also noticed that none of the girls were wearing any shoes. The
father even throught the tough situation he still managed to have a smile on his face to help his little

Eveline Research Paper
Did Eveline Make The Right Choice?
The tale of Eveline is a very interesting story. Written by James Joyce in 1914, Eveline was part of a
collection of works entitled Dubliners. The story takes place in Dublin, Ireland around the time of
World War I. It is a narrative about a woman named Eveline who has a very important decision to
make. Eveline has met a sailor named Frank who is from Argentina and is visiting Dublin on vacation.
As the story proceeds, Eveline begins to develop feelings towards him and Frank asks her to
accompany him back to Argentina. However, due to unfortunate circumstances, Eveline s mother
passed away. Before her mother died, Eveline made a promise that she will care for her younger
siblings. Asides from the challenge ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As much as Eveline was abused, she still cared for him, and he has feelings for her as well. As she
remembers, Eveline states that her father was becoming old and that he would miss her. Eveline then
goes on to recall a time where she was laid up for a day, and read a ghost story and made a toast for
her. One might argue that Eveline s conscience is beginning to take over her decision making. Eveline
states, in her home anyway she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her life
about her (par.5). As Eveline is about to leave she begins to question the decision one last time.
However, Eveline states, Frank would save her. He would give her life, perhaps love, too, and it seems
as if Eveline is now questioning the life that Frank might provide her. by stating perhaps love, too (par.
18).
After taking into account the fact that she is unhappy in Dublin, Eveline is waiting at the station for
Frank. At this moment, Eveline is still unsure of exactly what she wants to do.If she went, tomorrow
she would be on the sea with Frank, steaming towards Buenos Ayres. However, as Eveline came back
to reality, one can argue that finally she woke up and realized that she knew nothing about Frank. She
was not sure about her feelings toward him and, her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or
recognition (para.

Essay on the Symbolism of the Menagerie in The Glass...
The Symbolism of the Menagerie in The Glass Menagerie
Tennessee Williams play, The Glass Menagerie, describes three separate characters, their dreams, and
the harsh realities they face in a modern world. The Glass Menagerie exposes the lost dreams of a
southern family and their desperate struggle to escape reality. Williams use of symbols adds depth to
the play. The glass menagerie itself is a symbol Williams uses to represent the broken lives of
Amanda, Laura and Tom Wingfield and their inability to live in the present.
The glass menagerie symbolizes Amanda Wingfield s overwhelming need to cling to her past and her
fulfilled fear of being alone. Amanda resents the poverty stricken neighborhood in which she lives so

Tom ends the argument by calling Amanda an ugly babbling old witch (Williams 1875), and struggles
to put his coat on, intent on leaving. When he cannot put the coat on properly, he becomes frustrated
with his clumsiness and flings it across the room, breaking some of the glass collection. Laura cries
out as if wounded (Williams 1875). This shows how fragile Laura really is and how she reacts when
even the small balance of her apartment is shifted. The most prominent use of this symbol comes at
the crisis of the story, when Jim is left alone with Laura. The conversation turns to Laura s glass
collection, when she remarks glass is something you have to take good care of. (Williams 1900), again
showing her fragility. More parallels are drawn between Laura and the glass collection with the
introduction of the unicorn. Jim says, Poor little fellow, he must feel sort of lonesome (Williams 1902)
to which Laura replies, He stays on a shelf with some horses that don t have horns and all of them
seem to get along nicely together (Williams 1902). The unicorn becomes a symbol for Laura because
just like the unicorn she is different. When Jim and Laura dance, and Jim accidentally knocks the
unicorn off the table and its horn is broken off, it loses its uniqueness. Similarly, when Jim kisses
Laura and then shatters her hopes by telling

Cons The Chevrolet Equinox is comfortable, generously spacious, and quiet, except when it increases
speed. It provides a quick transition and a smooth ride. The interior layout is flexible, switching
effortlessly between cargo and hauling passengers. The redesigned exterior is also quite fashionable.
However, the Chevrolet is noisy when it accelerates and has low power. The Eco Mode may not save
enough fuel for the reduction in performance, and manual shift mode is disappointing. Changes are
required in continual radius turns, and the distance necessary for fade free braking is slightly longer
than other compacted SUVs. Also, the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox doesn t have an emergency braking
system which is disappointing. Although it is slightly larger than its rivalry, the total cargo space is
smaller. The interior elegance could use an upgrade, and additional air vents are needed to heat and

Biomechanics Concepts and Principals of Tennis The behavior of biomechanics works upon many

European intervention whether or not they had a joint declaration ( quot;Monroe Doctrine quot; 617).
Then on October 12th, 1823 Canning had a number of meetings with Prince Jules de Polignac who
was a French ambassador in London. Their meetings concluded with the Polignac Memorandum,
saying that France would not help Spain regain her lost colonies. All of this hindered the action toward
cooperation. John Q. Adams had opposed the issue of a joint statement with the British (Migill 595).
Adams asked, quot; Why should the United States appear as a cockboat in the wake of a British man of
war? quot; (Perkins 51). With the guaranteed backing of the British Royal Navy and the Polignac
Memorandum the United States did not need the British in the statement. The United States would not
have to share the glory with the British. Monroe, convinced by Adams arguments, agreed to go on

The Theme of Heritage in “Everday Use” Essay
In her late twentieth century short story Everyday Use, African American writer Alice Walker
contrasts the struggle between the main characters involving the recurring theme. The story takes
place in a rural Georgia setting during the 1970s. The plot circulates around Mama, Maggie, and Dee.
Throughout, heritage develops and remains a central theme revolving them. Each of these women in
the Johnson family tries to stay true to heritage value. But different roles of heritage exist between
each woman, so their ways of achieving this mission differs. The story Everyday Use exemplifies the
various understandings and use of heritage through Mama, Maggie, and Dee.

Along with the name of Dee, Mama emphasizes heritage through the quilts. The mother understands
that the quilts represent her family heritage because they are composed of pieces of the lives of
previous generations (Andrews 3 of 4). Mama feels the true meaning of the family quilts. The quilts
represent tradition. Critic David Cowart reiterates the quote of Barbara Christian which is heritage . . .
must continually be renewed rather than fixed in the past . Thus for mother heritage is living tradition
manifested through homely skills, such as quilt making, passed on (Cowart 4 of 7). Mama denies Dee
of possessing the quilts and feels like she was touched by the spirit of God in church (Farrell 4 of 5).
She chooses Maggie to have the symbolic quilts over Dee. By selecting Maggie Mrs. Johnson
recognizes the quilt connection with her (Piedmont Marton 9 of 13). Mama realizes that heritage must
be kept up because the art will die if women like Maggie do not keep it up (Cowart 4 of 7). Values of
both daughters become factors during the decision Mama makes. The mother is assigning proper
weight to the virtues of Maggie and to the ancestral importance of the pieced quilts (Baker Jr. and
Pierce Baker 12 of 13). Thus, emphasizes her concept of heritage, Mama selects the correct daughter.

Compare And Contrast Benjamin Franklin And John Winthrop
John Winthrop and Benjamin Franklin both played pivotal roles in their structuring government, yet
were very different in their philosophical views. Winthrop, a Puritan, founded his ideals based on a

Franklin agreed and signed the Declaration of Independence that stated, We hold these truths to be self

Greeny Ride A Horse Western Analysis
How To Properly Ride a Horse Western
Welcome, greeny rider.
I am assuming you know nothing about horseback riding, western style, from the way you are looking
at the saddle. Yes, that is the correct form and fit of the saddle. Yes, it probably is heavy for your arms.
Yes, the reins are supposed to be that long. Any more questions...? Put your hands down! Good...
Make sure that, when you are trotting, you move against the saddle. When you are in saddle, you
should never move with the saddle. Never. You need to keep your body flailing around against it.
Also, make sure that when you are moving against it, you push your body up towards the saddle horn
and almost clonk the inside of your legs against it every time. That won t hurt at all..

This will make your horse get used to being pulled really hard in the mouth, and it will refuse to stop
whenever you pull back on the reins in the future, because it is so used to having its mouth ripped up.
This will make sure your horse go fast and never tire, because it doesn t have to worry about being
stopped.
Make sure the horse s head is behind the vertical when riding. They don t need to breathe! It won t
even hurt their neck! A horse s head is meant to be pulled down to it s neck, so air has trouble getting
in through their nose and into their lungs. Nobody s head hurts after looking down all day, either.
You must wear shorts or thin riding pants. Jeans are overrated. You are going to want the saddle to rub
against your legs and scrape the skin off. Tougher skin will grow back! But you must keep riding,
even through the pain. You fidgeting in your saddle will make the horse do much better, because it
totally can t pick up on your mood.
And, this, is how to ride Western. The proper way. It s for everyone, especially if you like ignoring
your instructor, or just learning on your own. No mistakes can be made if you do all of the things

  • 2. A Thousand Years Of Good Prayer Deeper Than Words: Communication in A Thousand Years of Good Prayer, by Yiyun Li There are those who have a difficult time expressing themselves with words. It is as though there is a communication barrier between people even if they are speaking the same language. The struggle for successful communication can be even harder if different languages are spoken. Even if there are no words spoken, communication between two people still occurs. Yiyun Li s short story A Thousand Years of Good Prayer offers an excellent study in communication. This study includes examples of communication barriers and the successful aspects of communication revealing the ultimate theme: communication does not need to be verbalized to have a relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the same way the language barrier hinders conversation. Mr. Shi knows little English and mostly speaks in Chinese. This hinders true communication between him and Madam, a woman he meets in the park He feels that sometimes they run out of English (406). When there are no more English words to be said, both revert to their native language. Neither Mr. Shi nor Madame truly understands what is being said. The Pablo Neruda s, The United Fruit Co., a free verse poem, published in 1950, emphasizes the domination of the United Fruit Company amid the Columbian people. Pablo Neruda s The United Fruit Co. is able to greatly describe what happened to the Colombian people when the Chicago based United Fruit Co. destroyed his home and his people. The United Fruit Co., was very successful in Columbia, due to its location in the Banana Republic and the poor hardworking people of Columbia. The poem deplores the exploitation of the Latin American countries by North American companies. Throughout the poem Neruda is able to bring to the surface the issues of corruption that big, greedy, and wealthy companies, such as the United Fruit Co, bring to small, poor, hardworking countries in Central America with the use of allusions and imagery. Neruda organizes the poem into four stanzas that follows Neruda s stream of consciousness. Each stanza represents events that occurred during the reign of the United Fruit Co. The first presents the scene after the creation of the world and the birth of the different companies. The second talks about the dictatorship in South and Central America. The third presents the entrance of the United Fruit Company and the last presents the consequences people face from the arising of the said company (Bayug Web). As Neruda mentions, When the trumpet sounded everything was prepared on earth, and Jehovah ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The culture and the memory could be absorbed from local craftsman and local material(ruins building material). Moreover, local events or resident s participation with building construction also help to maintain the culture and memory for themself. Her focus is her own grandmother s life and experience as an immigrant from Mexico in the 1900 s. By using the characterization literary device Ryan conveys the importance of family through the protagonist s growth in the story. Esperanza travels to California with her mother and previous servants Hortensia, Miguel, and Alfonso. Her reaction was to hide her doll instantly because this doll was her last gift from her father and the little girl ... is poor and dirty (pg. 70). She is surprised that her mother apologizes to the child s mother. Therefore, the author creates this scene to be the first lesson of kindness Esperanza experiences because her mother makes a yarn doll for the crying child. Although, she is relieved that they get off at the next stop because she doesn t want to be reminded of her selfish behavior (pg. 72). The reader becomes aware of just how rich and spoiled Esperanza was because she sees an innocent poor child to be so repulsive to her. The author writes about the character s relief when the child is gone because it proves that she has not changed and is still entitled. However, this event is the first step in Esperanza s realization and awareness of her selfish ways because she acknowledges that her behavior was selfish. • 7. Bill Beichick Persuasive Speech At several points throughout someone s life, it is guaranteed that accusations will be made against them. Some may be true, others may be false, but when they are made it is up to the accused to prove themselves innocent. Within the past ten years, former Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich, and Head Coach of the New England Patriots, Bill Belichick faced adversity which came along with accusations made against them. With the use of ethos, pathos, and logos, otherwise known as the three rhetorical appeals, both gentlemen attempted to persuade others to believe in their innocence. After reading both situations it is evident that by using his credibility, being very informative to his discourse community, and sharing intellectual and emotional experience, Bill Belichick was far more successful in accomplishing his persuasive purpose. The ethos appeal is the author s persuasive power to use credibility in a rhetorical situation. Within his press conference, Rob Blagojevich s tone in addressing the topic at hand suggests to the audience that he is strong and confident in his words. By saying, I m not going to quit a job the people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob (Blagojevich 1), he attempts to gain credibility by remaining firm and reminding the people of Illinois that they are the ones who voted for him to be governor. To cater for the complex sampling, the data include weights (students weights, parent weights, teacher weights, counselor weights, and school weights) that should be used to account for the sampling and non response at the two stages of the data collecting process. For these reasons STATA and HLM software will be used in the data analysis process because these software can be used with weights and correction of standard error. • 10. Reliability Is Defined, Within Psychometric Testing Reliability is defined, within psychometric testing, as the stability of a research study or measure(s). Reliability can be examined externally, Inter rater and Test Retest, as well as internally; which is seen in internal consistency reliability methods. It s best to establish inter rater reliability outside of the context of the study s measure. If the reliability is incorporated in the measure and is extremely low, this can cause serious issues for the researchers going forward. It is highly recommended that a pilot study be done to establish the inter rater reliability. It is also a good idea to periodically assess the inter rater reliability if the study will be conducted for an extensive amount of time. There is a difference in how to assess categorical versus continuous measures inter rater reliability. If the measure is a compilation of categories, then the researchers could have the raters mark each category that is applicable to the observations. From those selections, the research team should calculate the percentage of agreement among the raters. However, the research team could also calculate Cohen s Kappa, for a more stable percentage. Cohen s Kappa Cohen s Kappa states: where Pr(a) is the observed agreement among raters, and Pr(e) is the conjectural likelihood of chance agreement, using the observed data to calculate the probabilities of the raters hypothetically choosing each category. • 12. Causes And Effects Of Anthropogenic Ecosystems Anthropogenic activity has affected a large number of ecosystems in the world including the earth s oceans. Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) have been escalating since the rise of the industrial revolution and are now at a far more prominent rate than previously experienced in the Earth s history primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (Wood et al., 2008). The concentration of CO2 in the Earth s atmosphere now surpasses 380 parts per million (ppm), which is more than 80 ppm over the highest values of the past 740,000 years (Hoegh Guldberg et al., 2007). As a result, the oceans have absorbed approximately 25% to 30% of the CO2 in the atmosphere acting as carbon sinks and decreasing the rate of CO2 rise in the atmosphere, which has had a direct effect on the ocean s chemistry (Logan, 2010). This results in the most prominent phenomena known as ocean acidification, which worsens day to day as CO2 enters the oceans at a more noteworthy rate than ever before, diminishing the ocean s natural buffering capacity and lowering the pH (Wood et al., 2008). This is documented to have a significant threat to marine species. As CO2 enters the ocean and comes in contact with the water, it reacts and changes the chemical properties of the ocean itself (Wood et al., 2008). This process produces carbonic acid that breaks down into bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydrogen ions that increase the acidity. The ocean s pH commonly ranges between 7.8 and 8.2, yet, recent studies show that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many varieties of shock, but for the purpose of this essay I will focus on hypovolemic shock. The term hypovolemic means low volume; this term in and of itself tells us what the root cause of this form of shock is, low blood volume. There are two different types of hypovolemic shock, hemorrhagic and non hemorrhagic. I will be discussing the possible causes, signs, symptoms, and treatment options for the hemorrhagic type. I will also explain what health care providers in the field should be looking for to determine whether the patient is in a state of compensated or decompensating shock. Compensated shock is when the body is using all of it s resources to maintain perfusion but in the later stages of shock the patient will decompensate, this is when the body s attempts at maintaining perfusion are beginning to fail. Recognizing the signs and symptoms of hypovolemic shock early is vitally important! The first thing that emergency medical providers should remember is that just because you can t see bleeding does not mean it is not there. Hemorrhagic shock can be missed if the care provider is hyperfocused on symptoms like low blood pressure, which only becomes evident after the patient has already started de compensating. A symptom that can be seen earlier on, while the patient is still in a compensated state is decreased ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since then hedge funds have grown to control over $2.4 trillion in assets in over 11,000 different funds. Today hedge funds employ many different techniques and strategies to gain a positive return that actually do not involve hedging but instead taking a more risky stance in the market to obtain higher returns. Hedge funds are predominately funded by wealthy investors and pensions but does this mean that they are a safe investment to make? If I had the ability to invest in a hedge fund I would decline to do so. My reasoning for this is that while some risky investors believe the high risk high return, lack of regulation, illiquidity, and fees associated are the advantages of hedge funds that allow them to generate high returns, from a conservative investor viewpoint these are all disadvantages and risks that aren t compensated for making investments in hedge funds an unwise decision. The first advantage or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint is the high risk and high return associated with hedge funds. The most prominent use of this symbol comes at the crisis of the story, when Jim is left alone with Laura. However, the Chevrolet is noisy when it accelerates and has low power. The Eco Mode may not save enough fuel for the reduction in performance, and manual shift mode is disappointing. Changes are required in continual radius turns, and the distance necessary for fade free braking is slightly longer than other compacted SUVs. Also, the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox doesn t have an emergency braking system which is disappointing. Although it is slightly larger than its rivalry, the total cargo space is smaller. Critic David Cowart reiterates the quote of Barbara Christian which is heritage . . . must continually be renewed rather than fixed in the past . Thus for mother heritage is living tradition manifested through homely skills, such as quilt making, passed on (Cowart 4 of 7). By selecting Maggie Mrs. Johnson recognizes the quilt connection with her (Piedmont Marton 9 of 13).
