and task completion strategies involves reducing distractions, dividing tasks into smaller sections,
letting the child summarize new information, using cue words to catch the child s attention and
developing non verbal cues. Memory impairment may be intervened through repetition and
summarizing of information often, forming specific details together into categorized information,
connecting new information to existing knowledge and providing illustrations with detailed
instructions. Other tools for memory enhancement may include the use of self reminders such as
watches, smartphones, computers or day planners. Strategies to enhance organizational skills may
consist of providing extra time to review skills or concepts, written checklist for specific complex
tasks, instructions how to follow up on written checklist, written schedule of daily routine, specific

In this paper, Nyerere s views on education are examined with a view to determine the extent of their
relevance to contemporary theory of education in Kenya. This analysis is concerned with 3 aspects.
First, an exploration of possible theoretical contexts of his views on education is undertaken with a
view to obtaining a basis for an intelligible discussion. Second, an examination of education for self
reliance is undertaken. This is followed by an analysis of education for liberation as espoused by
Nyerere. This is followed by a delineation of salient views that can enrich contemporary education in
Kenya. Theoretical framework The liberal theory Liberalism envisions the ideal society to be one that
embraces a wide range of individual liberties. These include, personal dignity, free expression,
religious tolerance, right to own property, freedom of association, transparency of government,
limitations on government power, the rule of law, equality, free market economy and free trade
(Wikipedia,http://en.wikipedia.org/Liberalisms). It is incumbent upon government to uphold these
freedoms in order to guarantee stability and peace. In addition, liberalism tends to encourage
representative democratic governance. Here, the elected representatives are guided by the rule of law
under the overall guidance of the constitution. Enshrined in the constitution are

Bilingual Education to ban or not to ban?
When we speak about this country The United States of America we automatically think of the great
number of languages people speak in this country. Take California as an example. It is one of the
border states of America, and this state is made up mostly of immigrants. As a result, most people in
this state are either bilingual or even trilingual. In order for the immigrant students to become
integrated into this country, they must learn English, and Bilingual Education can help them assimilate
faster to this new country. Nevertheless, people continue to vote against and ban Bilingual Education
because they believe that if the student is here in America, he or she should be treated the same as the
native speakers in order to save money and for him or her to better fit in. Even though many people
criticize bilingual education, I personally am one of the supportive fans of it because Bilingual
Education allows new immigrant students to learn English at a reasonable pace, assimilate to a new
environment, maintain their academic specialties, and not to fall behind.
What is Bilingual Education? The term refers to the practice of teaching non English speaking
children in their native language, and was developed in the 1960 s; these programs were intended to
allow students to progress in science, math and social studies while they learned English in a separate
class.

Argumentative Essay On Gun Violence In The United States
Argumentative Essay Gun violence cost each person in the United States roughly $564 and the US
government $5.5 billion in lost tax revenue. A woman s risk of being murdered increases 500% if a
gun is present during a domestic dispute. 89% of unintentional shooting deaths of children occur in the
home and most of these deaths occur when children are playing with a loaded gun in their parents
absence. Gun control laws should be passed in the US because Guns are rarely used in self defense,
more gun control leads to fewer suicides, and gun control laws would reduce gun deaths. Gun control
laws should be enacted. First of all guns are rarely used in self defense. Of the 84,495,500 property

He is also aware of his lack of apprehension of other aspects of life and so throughout the tale, he gets
heavily misinterpreted by the majority of society. Regardless though, within his parameters, his
eccentricity allows him a wider range of analysis to decipher the situation rather than becoming
discombobulated and feart. Also, as far as maintaining relationships, I d say it s an area of Christopher
that needs work. His acknowledgement of his list of behavioural nodi well indicates his unintentional

methods of this approach are always in the process of refinement. It explains that Behavior is the

I could relate more with this one because of what my family went through. Behavioral therapy hit
home, by this I mean when my brother behavior was changing due to using weed my family behavior
was affected in the process too. My parents became stricter with my sister and I. Every time
something went wrong my parents would blame my sister and I. I felt like behavioral theory fit into
what my family was going through. During the time I didn t have any knowledge of what behavioral
therapy was, but when I started to learn about it I would think of my brother. Maybe it s not the right
example to compare it to, but I feel like it is because of the behavior he was learning when he was
hanging out with those people. The environment he was during those days made him act different
when he was with our family. Some people might argue that it s their own choice to behave the way
they want too, but if he would have been in different environment things might have been different.
His goals might have been different. Eventually, now that he is doing better in life I ask him, what was
going through your head when you were smoking marijuana? His response I was going to a lot of

Cultural Relativism And Its Impact On The World
Cultural relativism is the idea that all cultures are equal and no one is better than another. This way of
thinking was created and elaborated on by three main philosophers. Franz Boas, Alain Locke and
Robert Lowie were nineteenth century philosophers who shaped the ideas on concepts of Cultural
Relativism. These three men focused on the idea that one cannot judge other cultures because they
only see through eyes that have been influenced by their surroundings. They used relativist ideas that
existed already and expressed them on the world and the many different cultures that exist in it. They
created a mainly atheistic viewpoint in which the idea of a central moral truth and a higher power was
discounted. Only the people within a culture could create moral codes and laws for themselves. Franz
Boas was born on July 19, 1858 in Minden, Germany. Boas grew up in a well educated family and
was encouraged to follow his own beliefs and think for himself. From a very young age, Franz Boas
was interested in natural history and studied it throughout his years of schooling. He continued his
studies and graduated with a degree in physics, even though he considered himself more of a
geographer than a physicist. This interest in geography is what drove him to delve deeper into the
ideas of cultural difference and led to the beginnings of cultural relativism. Through his studies, Franz
Boas became drawn to anthropology, the study of humankind. He became interested in

uncontrollable spiral we chose to ignore the voice of God calling out to us. He wants to pull up out of

From above you would think this was only a good thing. But unfortunately a systolic blood pressure
of below 90mmHg can cause real problems. The lower you blood pressure becomes the less blood
reaches our vital organs like the brain. This can cause simple symptoms such as dizziness or faints.
However prolonged hypotension below 80 90mmHg can cause toxins to build up in the blood, this is
because the kidneys need a certain amount of blood pressure to filter the blood properly. This can be
fatal if left untreated.
2.2 Body temperature is a measurement of the body s ability to generate or get rid of excess heat.
When the body gets to hot the blood vessels near the skin dilate to carry the excess heat to your skins
surface. You will also begin to sweat as the sweat evaporates this helps cool you body. When the body
becomes too cold our blood vessels contract, this reduces the blood flow to the skins surface to
conserve body heat. As we become colder the body can start an involuntary response called shivering.
This is where the muscles of the body rapidly contract this extra muscle activity helps generate more
heat. Normal body temperature is around 37°C this is an average of normal body temperatures. Your
temperature may actually be 0.6°C above or below 37°C depending on the outside temperature or you

Things are Not Always as They Seem with Good Country People
Why that looks like the nice dull young man that tried to sell me a Bible yesterday, Mrs. Hopewell
said, squinting. He must of been trying to sell them to the
Negros back in there. He was so simple, she said, but I guess the world would be better off if we were
all that simple (145). At the end of the story, Mrs. Hopewell considers
Manley Pointer simple. Little did she know that this simple man had just caused Hulga severe mental
and physical anguish. Her ignorance towards the underlying evil in the world turns out to be her
greatest fault. Situations are not always as they seem, and unless one first looks within, his or her

The Bible carried by Manley turns out to be nothing more than a hiding place for a pocket flask of
whiskey, a pack of cards, and a small blue box with printing on it (135). Joy Hulga appears to be
accepting of her situation, but she is still very ashamed of her appearance. In the story, both Hulga and
Manley wear masks over their true natures. Their final confrontation, however, reveals Manley to be a
cunning atheist while Hulga is exposed as a girl whose naivete sharply contradicts the nihilistic cliches
she professes. After the confrontation in the hay loft with Hulga, Manley is revealed as an abuser and
a thief, but only to Hulga. There are two types of irony throughout this story, situational irony and
verbal irony. Situational irony is found when Hulga is expecting to seduce an innocent, however, it
turns out to be quite different. Joy Hulga is easily the most taken advantage of character in the entire
story. As her ugly sounding name implies, she appears ugly and evil, but deep down she has a desire
for love and happiness. She says, I am one of those people who see through to nothing (115). Little
does she know, that she recognizes one of her greatest weaknesses in this statement. Hulga has said
one thing but her hidden desires cause her several problems later on. For example, the whole scene
that takes place in the hay loft, which is know as verbal irony. Manley was

The Battle Of Santa Rosa Island
After several months of battles between the north and the south in several states, including North
Carolina, Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, the war reached Florida in 1861. The first
battle to reach Florida occurred when there was a standoff at Fort Pickens. When Florida seceded from
the Union, there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Pickens that were asked to surrender. A force of
almost 1,000 volunteer soldiers landed on Santa Rosa Island with the intent of raiding the outlying
defenses and camps near Fort Pickens. General Richard H. Anderson led these soldiers. Mainly the
Sixth New York Infantry Regiment defended the forts and camps. Soon after the Confederates burned
and ransacked the Union camp, reinforcements were sent from Fort Pickens to assist the confused
Union soldiers. The Confederates had 18 killed, 39 wounded, and 30 imprisoned soldiers, while the
Union had 14 killed, 29 wounded, and 20 imprisoned. By March 1862, the Confederates completely
withdrew from the area. This battle became known as the Battle of Santa Rosa Island because the
union troops landed on Santa Rosa Island, four miles east of Fort Pickens. Most of the civil war took
place in the states of Virginia and Tennessee but two major battles of and several smaller altercations
took place in the state of Florida. On February 20, 1864 the largest civil war battle in Florida took
place near Lake City. This battle occurred a year after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed and

Analysis Of Gabriel By George Sand
Gabriel by George Sand, translated by Gay Smith and directed by Rebecca MaxField was performed
at the AS220 Head Trick Theatre Saturday, December 15 at 9:00 pm. Art is about the obscurity of
modern art. In George Sand s Play, Gabriel raises many unsolved questions.
In the opening scene, Gabriel is introduced as a Woman who has been raised and educated as a boy by
his teacher, Father Chaivari played by Amy Thompson. In the seventeenth century Italy. At the
opening play, Gabriel played by Christine Pavao has a dream in which she sees an archangel Gabriel

Genetically Modified Foods
During the last few decades, the field of genetics has been significantly advanced. One of these
advancements is the understanding of how genes affect an organism. Through this understanding,
geneticists have begun to alter the natural genes found in food. The altercation of genes in food has
given these foods the name genetically modified. Currently, the affect of genetically modified food on
humans and the environment is a controversial topic among geneticists and environmentalists
worldwide. This paper examines the controversy surrounding genetically modified food in the United

The bacterium acts as a transport mechanism for the plasmid and injects the plasmid into the organism
s DNA (McInnis and Sinha, 2000).
In the Gene Gun Route, scientists also isolate the DNA for the desired trait and splice in a gene for
antibiotic resistance. Then the isolated DNA is coated on microscopic bullets of gold or tungston. The
final step in the process is using a gene gun to fire the bullets of gold or tungston into plant cells at the
speed of sound. The result of this final step is to insert the donor DNA into the organism s DNA
(McInnis and Sinha, 2000).
Now it is time for a short pop quiz to test the reader s knowledge of how genetically modified foods.

what you are eating or not telling the truth. Most likely, your answer for the second question was well

guessed a lower number is because genetically modified foods have successfully infiltrated the market

Bolivar s End Of The Second Republic
Bolivar returned to fight another day in 1813. He declared a war to the death against Spain. He gained
support from Colombia and drove the Spanish out of the Magdalena River area and amassed himself a
large army. Civilian leaders in Cartagena then gave him permission to liberate western Venezuela. He
did so and continued to take Caracas in August of 1813. This was known as Simon Bolivar s Admiral
Campaign . He went on to declare a second republic and assumed his role as a military dictator. The
Second Republic collapsed within a few months, however, because Bolivar had failed to win the
support of the non white, many of whom were instead recruited to fight with those loyal to the king.
What also led to the fall of the Second Republic was the Infernal Legion that consisted of skilled

Small Town Essay

This Small Town Means Business: Improving Local Economy When you grow up in a small town the
one thing that is the most difficult to withstand is boredom. At least, that s how it is for the youth of
the area. However, when you look at it from an older and more mature perspective you might realize
that the main issue with some small towns is job availability, as well as the town s revenue for
different projects, etc. Recently my hometown has been undertaking a few different projects that will
really benefit the area and it s economy. The youth league softball program has grown tremendously
within the past few years. Due to that improvement, Sallisaw was chosen to host a state tournament.
Which was wonderful until we realized that our softball complex was not best suited for a tournament
of this magnitude. This is when talk began on building an entirely new sports complex for all of the
youth league sports in the area. One other issue arose through hosting this tournament. Out of sixty
three teams who were in the tournament last summer, only one team stayed in Sallisaw. The rest of the
teams were sent to stay in hotels here in Fort Smith, all because the hotels that are located in Sallisaw
did not have an indoor swimming pool. The teams would rather make a thirty minute commute than
stay in a hotel that does not have a swimming pool. The next project Sallisaw is undertaking is
bringing in a well known hotel

Gladiatorial Contest in Rome
Gladiatorial Contest in Rome Rome was a warrior state. Since the state was a great fighting state in
their time, the wars sort of formed the gladiatorial contest in ancient Rome. The Romans were
fascinated and pleasured by violence, bloodshed, and human suffering the gladiatorial games. The
gladiatorial contests began at the reign of their first emperor Augustus to pay tribute to their warrior
traditions. The Romans built artificial battlefields within amphitheaters in cities and towns for public
entertainment. It is very obvious that gladiatorial contest were important because of the enormous size
of the amphitheaters. In A.D. 80, the Colosseum, which seated fifty thousand people, was used to

It was then when officers of the state started producing the gladiatorial shows on a regular basis as a
part of their job. Emperor Augustus restricted the gladiatorial games to two a year, limiting the
aristocrats chances to receive the peoples vote for political offices. Each of the officials were
forbidden to spend more on themselves than their associates. However, the emperor s rules were often
broken by aristocrats due to the competitiveness of political power and prestige. Animals played a part
in the gladiatorial shows also. In A.D. 108 9, Emperor Trajan gave games lasting 123 days containing
9,138 gladiators fought eleven thousand animals. In 169 B.C., sixty three African lions and leopards,
forty bears, and several elephants were murdered in a single show. Romans then started to hunt new
animals such as tigers, crocodiles, giraffes, lynxes, rhinoceros, and ostriches. Some shows involved
hundreds of animals in one show. All of the animals were killed for entertainment. Gladiators were
heroes to their culture. Even though most of the gladiators were slaves, women were attracted to them.
But gladiators were also degraded by society. They were not allowed to be buried in normal burial
grounds. Women also fought in gladiatorial games also. The women fought in the arena were men
fought. An example of women fighting was found on a small stone relief, depicting two female
gladiators, with one breast bare, called Amazon an Achillia. Sports

Essay about Good and Evil in Quinn s Ishmael
Human beings are destroying the world. It s a fact we all know. Pollution is abundant, we chop down
rain forests, we kill our own kind, we steal, lie, and cheat, and the list could go on and on. Daniel
Quinn believes that this destruction comes from something more extreme than just the notion to
survive. In his novel, Ishmael, Quinn believes that the problems facing humanity are do to man s
knowledge of good and evil. Man s knowledge of good and evil gives us the power to rule the world
any way we please. A God or Gods no longer have control. Once Adam, who represents the life of the
human race, took a bite from the fruit of the tree of knowledge man s fate was sealed. This knowledge
insured, Man was born to rule the world (165). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now, no matter what decision man makes or action man does, it is the correct one. Man s knowledge
of good and evil, and the belief in their ultimate power, is what leads to destruction. While man has
the knowledge, man has, no certain knowledge about how they ought to live (88). What is good and
evil is something there are no concrete answers for, yet man creates these answers to please himself.
Because they have no concrete answers, man has to go on ruling the world, even if it means
destroying the world and mankind with it (168). Man, even while slowly destroying the world, will
never be able to let go of their power and give up the knowledge of good and evil. For man to give
back the knowledge they have attained, would mean to spitting out the fruit of that tree and giving the
rule of the world back to the gods (168). By doing this man would return to innocence, become a
childlike creature that depends on the gods to rule their lives. Man will have the wisdom of the gods, if
he tries to preempt that wisdom, the result won t be enlightenment, it will be death (183). It is this lack
of wisdom that leads man to continue to destroy the world. This scares man and ensures that man will
never let go of the knowledge of good and evil. Quinn proves that the knowledge of good and evil has
certainly lead to the destruction of the world. Man s power far outweighs man s ability to savor the
world. I believe Quinn makes a very

Sometimes in life, we dream about unimaginable lives we could have, this causes us to disconnect
from our reality. In Chipped Beef , David Sedaris contrasts his fantasy with his reality to show how
living in a fantasy world disconnects you from your family. Throughout his memoir, Sedaris
demonstrates how his fantasy disconnects him from his reality, how he portrays his reality in a
negative manner, and how he loses his relationship with his family. In the beginning of this memoir
Sedaris uses his fantasy to show how disconnected he is from his reality and family by using rhetorical
devices and strategies like a mocking tone and analogy. First off, Sedaris describes his unthinkable

stating how he thinks how smart and intelligent his fantasy family is by making them able to control

Urbanization In The Late Nineteenth Century
Urbanization in the United States in the late nineteenth century resulted from a number of factors, in
particular the rise of commercial activity following the Civil War and the industrialization of the
period. During that post bellum period, cities grew along with a rising population of those residing in
the cities. Although those two factors might, at first, appear to be the same, they are, in fact, different.
In one early study from immediately after the period (Jefferson, 1915), scholars observed that
American cities grew by about 15 million people in the two decades before 1900. Immigration from
other countries certainly featured significantly in that growth, but the industrial revolution also played
a significant role (Schultz, 2013,

Since the 1970 s, the distinction between criminal law and immigration law has become increasingly
blurred. In many jurisdictions around the world, undocumented immigration was long considered a
civil offence in which violation resulted in fines and deportation. Now, however, illegal crossings are
often treated as criminal violations carrying overly punitive consequences such as incarceration in
harsh detention centers. The ever evolving assortment of laws and enforcement measures concerning
immigration, as well as negative rhetoric in politics and media, has resulted in migrants being ascribed

Essentially, our social reality is influenced by the state constructed definition of what is crime which
often reflects the values of the upper class (Persak, 2016). For example, the trend seen in many cities
in the United States of criminalizing homelessness through so called get tough policies reflects the
upper classes desire for public health and safety, protection of economic interests in business districts
and the maintenance of city aesthetic. Although, these policies do not address the causes of
homelessness rather they exacerbate the problem and violate the liberties and human rights of citizens
(Foscarinis, Cunningham Bowers Brown, 1999). Criminalization is perhaps the most repressive and
intrusive applications of state power on a citizen and is often implemented, as is the case with the
homeless, to target the less desirable social groups (Persak, 2016). Moreover, while formal
criminalization in the form of legislation and criminal consequences for infringement works as a
social control, it is not the only form of criminalization that occurs. Informal criminalization may in
some cases be a more effective form of social control and ultimately lead to formal criminalization of
behavior or come as a result of formal legislation. As stated by Hauptman (2013), informal social

The Hero Of The Odyssey By Homer, Louis Zamperini, And The...
The trait of heroism is something that has changed over thousands of years. Today s heros have
different traits than those heroes of the Trojan War. However, a few have survived the test of time.
Many of modern day heroes, as well as past heroes, do hold these long enduring traits, like Nelson
Mandela, Marcus Luttrell, Louis Zamperini, and the fictional Iron Man. Odysseus, the main character
in The Odyssey by Homer, portrays the traits necessary to be dubbed a hero. One is a hero if he or she
shows leadership, bravery, resilience, and creativity throughout their actions.
Throughout the novel, Odysseus shows leadership as he sails over the oceans with his crew. For
example, the crew must pass the massive whirlpool Charybdis and the six headed monster Scylla. The
monster will eat six men per ship. Odysseus knows that six men will die if they pass too close to
Scylla, or Charybdis will devour the whole ship and crew. Odysseus, the leader of the crew, makes a
decision that will benefit his crews mission. He motivates his men by assuring this danger is no worse
than what we faced before (12:227). His leadership creates a courageous atmosphere that triumphs the
fear in the hearts of his men. His men row on, despite the fear, following his orders, and only lost the
six men they had to lose to pass this section of road on the pathway to home. Another example of
strong leadership is the exploration of the cave of the cyclops Polyphemus. The cyclops is an

How Does Baraka Destroy Nature
Mankind can destroy nature, but when nature strikes, it can be more powerful than any modifications
that humanity makes on it. Baraka depicts the overwhelming strength of nature through action shots of
Kuwaiti oil fires and their devastation in the post war state. In the Persian Gulf War of 1991 between
Kuwait and Iraq, conflict over oil and petroleum led to catastrophic environmental degradation and
consequences. Burning for about 7 months, fires engulfed and towered over the Kuwait landscape as
Iraqi forces set over 650 oil wells ablaze. Washed over by poisonous dark smoke, soot, and ash, land
combined with oil formed hardened layers of tarcrete, and rain as black as night fell upon the sand.
Animals and livestock died as their lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes
was replaced with oil. Although human nature ultimately created this disaster, the extent of their
power does not expand to the point where they can manipulate something like fire into a colossal
environmental calamity. While fire may frequently be associated with destruction and evil, it is an
archetypal symbol that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Internal Conflict In The Lovely Bones
A well written story involves important topics that are interesting for the reader, but also incorporates
strong emotions. Susie Salmon, a fourteen year old girl, is raped and murdered by a neighborhood
man. She tells the story from her point of view in heaven as she watches her family grieve over her
loss and search to find her killer. In The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold creates a suspenseful novel that
explores rape through the victims eyes while also telling a heart wrenching story with conflict,
imagery, and plot twists. The internal conflict of this novel causes the reader to feel sympathy for the
main character, Susie. When Susie is raped and then murdered, she goes to heaven. When she is there,
she is so wrapped up in her family s life, she can not move on. She is stuck in a different heaven,
where she can t see any of her family that has passed, and all she sees is Earth. Susie s counselor in

Crime And Violence In Latin America
Over the last two decades, many Latin American countries have seen crime and violence increase
considerably; in some nations, this upward trajectory has been steep. During the 1980s, homicide rates
per 100,000 population rose from 20.5 to 89.5 in Colombia; from 11.5 to 19.7 in
Brazil; from 2.1 to 12.6 in Trinidad and Tobago; and from 2.4 to 11.5 in Peru (Ayres 1998: 3). In the
1990s, this upsurge of crime continued. In Venezuela, for instance, rates of homicide per

18.6 per 100,000 in 1990 and a low point of 15.6 in 1992 to 25 in 1999. And

discussed by the family members instead of the patient. This paper will discuss the importance of
acknowledging the decisions made by the family members in the context of end of life care in Chinese
culture, and how nurses can provide culturally competent care to assist the families in decision
making. An overview of the issue will be discussed, followed by analysis and synthesis of the research
topic and closing the paper with a succinct conclusion.
Overview of Background
The decision making practices around the end of life care are different in different countries which are
usually formalized according to the religious beliefs and cultural beliefs, traditions and ethical views
(Gu, Chen, Liu, Zhang Cheng, 2016). Decision making around the end of life care is not an easy task,
it is influenced by laws, rules and ethical issues and individual and cultural

This analysis is concerned with 3 aspects. First, an exploration of possible theoretical contexts of his views on education is undertaken with a view to obtaining a basis for an intelligible discussion. Second, an examination of education for self reliance is undertaken. This is followed by an analysis of education for liberation as espoused by Nyerere. This is followed by a delineation of salient views that can enrich contemporary education in Kenya. When we speak about this country The United States of America we automatically think of the great number of languages people speak in this country. Take California as an example. It is one of the border states of America, and this state is made up mostly of immigrants. As a result, most people in this state are either bilingual or even trilingual. In order for the immigrant students to become integrated into this country, they must learn English, and Bilingual Education can help them assimilate faster to this new country. Nevertheless, people continue to vote against and ban Bilingual Education because they believe that if the student is here in America, he or she should be treated the same as the native speakers in order to save money and for him or her to better fit in. Even though many people criticize bilingual education, I personally am one of the supportive fans of it because Bilingual Education allows new immigrant students to learn English at a reasonable pace, assimilate to a new environment, maintain their academic specialties, and not to fall behind. What is Bilingual Education? The term refers to the practice of teaching non English speaking children in their native language, and was developed in the 1960 s; these programs were intended to allow students to progress in science, math and social studies while they learned English in a separate class. ... • 13. Cultural Relativism And Its Impact On The World Cultural relativism is the idea that all cultures are equal and no one is better than another. This way of thinking was created and elaborated on by three main philosophers. Franz Boas, Alain Locke and Robert Lowie were nineteenth century philosophers who shaped the ideas on concepts of Cultural Relativism. These three men focused on the idea that one cannot judge other cultures because they only see through eyes that have been influenced by their surroundings. They used relativist ideas that existed already and expressed them on the world and the many different cultures that exist in it. They created a mainly atheistic viewpoint in which the idea of a central moral truth and a higher power was discounted. Only the people within a culture could create moral codes and laws for themselves. Franz Boas was born on July 19, 1858 in Minden, Germany. Boas grew up in a well educated family and was encouraged to follow his own beliefs and think for himself. From a very young age, Franz Boas was interested in natural history and studied it throughout his years of schooling. He continued his studies and graduated with a degree in physics, even though he considered himself more of a geographer than a physicist. This interest in geography is what drove him to delve deeper into the ideas of cultural difference and led to the beginnings of cultural relativism. However prolonged hypotension below 80 90mmHg can cause toxins to build up in the blood, this is because the kidneys need a certain amount of blood pressure to filter the blood properly. This can be fatal if left untreated. 2.2 Body temperature is a measurement of the body s ability to generate or get rid of excess heat. The Battle Of Santa Rosa Island After several months of battles between the north and the south in several states, including North Carolina, Virginia, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee, the war reached Florida in 1861. When Florida seceded from the Union, there were Union soldiers stationed at Fort Pickens that were asked to surrender. In 169 B.C., sixty three African lions and leopards, forty bears, and several elephants were murdered in a single show. Romans then started to hunt new animals such as tigers, crocodiles, giraffes, lynxes, rhinoceros, and ostriches. Some shows involved hundreds of animals in one show. All of the animals were killed for entertainment. Gladiators were heroes to their culture. Even though most of the gladiators were slaves, women were attracted to them. But gladiators were also degraded by society. They were not allowed to be buried in normal burial grounds. Women also fought in gladiatorial games also. The women fought in the arena were men fought. Pollution is abundant, we chop down rain forests, we kill our own kind, we steal, lie, and cheat, and the list could go on and on. Daniel Quinn believes that this destruction comes from something more extreme than just the notion to survive. In his novel, Ishmael, Quinn believes that the problems facing humanity are do to man s knowledge of good and evil. Man s knowledge of good and evil gives us the power to rule the world any way we please. A God or Gods no longer have control. Once Adam, who represents the life of the human race, took a bite from the fruit of the tree of knowledge man s fate was sealed. This knowledge insured, Man was born to rule the world (165). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now, no matter what decision man makes or action man does, it is the correct one. Man s knowledge of good and evil, and the belief in their ultimate power, is what leads to destruction. While man has the knowledge, man has, no certain knowledge about how they ought to live (88). What is good and evil is something there are no concrete answers for, yet man creates these answers to please himself. Because they have no concrete answers, man has to go on ruling the world, even if it means destroying the world and mankind with it (168). Man, even while slowly destroying the world, will never be able to let go of their power and give up the knowledge of good and evil. For man to give back the knowledge they have attained, would mean to spitting out the fruit of that tree and giving the rule of the world back to the gods (168). By doing this man would return to innocence, become a childlike creature that depends on the gods to rule their lives. Man will have the wisdom of the gods, if he tries to preempt that wisdom, the result won t be enlightenment, it will be death (183). It is this lack of wisdom that leads man to continue to destroy the world. This scares man and ensures that man will never let go of the knowledge of good and evil. Quinn proves that the knowledge of good and evil has certainly lead to the destruction of the world. Man s power far outweighs man s ability to savor the world. I believe Quinn makes a very ... Today s heros have different traits than those heroes of the Trojan War. However, a few have survived the test of time. Many of modern day heroes, as well as past heroes, do hold these long enduring traits, like Nelson Mandela, Marcus Luttrell, Louis Zamperini, and the fictional Iron Man. Odysseus, the main character in The Odyssey by Homer, portrays the traits necessary to be dubbed a hero. One is a hero if he or she shows leadership, bravery, resilience, and creativity throughout their actions. Throughout the novel, Odysseus shows leadership as he sails over the oceans with his crew. For example, the crew must pass the massive whirlpool Charybdis and the six headed monster Scylla. The monster will eat six men per ship. Odysseus knows that six men will die if they pass too close to Scylla, or Charybdis will devour the whole ship and crew. Odysseus, the leader of the crew, makes a decision that will benefit his crews mission. He motivates his men by assuring this danger is no worse than what we faced before (12:227). His leadership creates a courageous atmosphere that triumphs the fear in the hearts of his men. His men row on, despite the fear, following his orders, and only lost the six men they had to lose to pass this section of road on the pathway to home. Animals and livestock died as their lungs blackened from the toxic atmosphere, and the water in lakes was replaced with oil.
