Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance And Violence
A psychologist would apply the psychological school of thought of cognitive dissonance theory to the
theme of violence. Cognitive dissonance theory is when there is inconsistency within the person, they
tend to do things to eliminate dissonance and gain consistency with themselves. People who are in
cognitive dissonance use violent acts to get back into consistency. This is shown in the movie Crash
when Farhad tries to kill Daniels daughter Laura because Farhad thinks that Daniel robbed is store.
Farhad being in cognitive dissonance goes to Daniels house and tries to shoot him. But, Laura walks
in front of him trying to save him. Farhad feels the only way to come back to consistency is to take
revenge on Daniel. Another example can be seen in the movie American History X when the reporter
interviews Derek about his father s death. After his father s death Derek was in dissonance, he thinks
to only way to get back into consistency is to hate black people. He commits violent acts not only
physically but verbally to black people. Violence is also shown in the movie Pleasantville when the
non colored people destroy Bill s diner and all his paintings that he drew. In Made in Dagenham
violence is displayed when Eddie hits the pillow to take out his anger because he is mad at Rita.
Lastly, in the movie In Out violence is shown when Emily is in dissonance because Howard came out
on the wedding day so she resorts to violence and punches Howard in the face. Discrimination is one

The Four Key Trade Policy Of The European Union Legislation
When Poland joined the European Union legislation, it has led to wide ranging reforms in economic
regulation and has decreased government intervention in the private sector. Changes in areas such as
financial markets, company and competition law, accounting, and intellectual property rights have
improved the environment for private business and increased economic growth. The European Union
trade policy and regulation sets the direction for trade and investment in and out of the European
Union. There are four key trade policies that the EU is working towards. Firstly, to create a global
system for fair and open trade. The World Trade Organization shapes a system of global trade rules
that keeps the global economy open for trade as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Europe has opened its markets to all imports from the world s poorest countries, and works actively to
help developing countries build the capacity to take advantage of trade. They also use the trade policy
to reinforce other important international goals (European Commission 2017).
In the power sector of Poland, coal takes the gold. It is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions
as well as a major employer. Under Poland s new energy plan, it is set to prioritise long term energy
security, putting a strong hold on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, while
increasing energy efficiency and decarbonising the transport system (IEA 2017). There are over 770
hydropower plants in poland. For many years, water has been a dominant source of energy produced
from renewable sources. Most polish hydropower resources are located in the area of the Vistula
River. In certain policy documents, such as Poland s Energy Policy until 2030 and he National Action
Plan in the Field of Renewable Energy, hydropower is said to be mainly based on the use of existing
damming to produce electricity (Pigeor 2012).
A focal point for great flow between sources of supply and consumers, is a warehouse. A warehouse is

Compare And Contrast Achilles And Odysseus
Achilles and Odysseus are quite different in the way they view combat and take down their enemies.
Achilles seems to rely on his physical prowess, often charging in headfirst into battle using surprise
and brute force to overpower his opponent whereas Odysseus has a tendency to use his intelligence
and cunning nature in both the battlefield and politics as he stealthily plans the demise of his
unsuspecting opponent. Gnashing his teeth with rage, Achilles leaped from his chariot, made for his
enemy, and lunged out at him with his sword (341). Even when faced with a seemingly invincible
assailant, Achilles uses his anger and sheer power to overtake Cycnus and impulsively attacks his
unblemished skin in the hopes to end his life. It is Achilles agile and finesse in battle that has led to
many victories for him. Even though the reasoning for his actions are more simplistic and even quite
animalistic in some scenarios, it is this godlike strength and vicious temper that makes him the
physical embodiment of a vengeful hero and in the Greeks stories he possesses all of the physical
traits a hero should exemplify. For now Odysseus began to boil with envy and thought up a despicable
plan to end his rival (342). Odysseus is quick and decisive in his actions but he relies on his sly nature
to defeat and overwhelm his opponent in battle. Odysseus is valued for his wisdom and fair counsel,
he has experience in the real world and this shows in the way he manipulates and even plays

Brave New World Satire Analysis
In Aldous Huxley s Brave New World, satire is used to show how ridiculous modern society was in
the 1930s. Huxley refers to a variety of themes, ranging from the decay of morals and culture to drug
dependency to brainwashing to others. Huxley also speaks of how the world in the 1930s is getting too
liberal, nobody cares about each other, and how if you have a problem you can just take drugs until it
is no longer a problem. The main thing Huxley speaks about is moral and cultural decay in modern
society. chaps 16 and 18. Nobody cares about history or each other, just progress and making money.
The ...I m working on a wonderful Delta Minus ovary... (ch1, pg 9) shows that they are harvesting
organs from babies. This could be a reference to organ farming in the 1930s. Huxley may have been
feeling particularly morbid when he wrote From the ranks of crawling babies came little squeals of
excitement, gurgles and twitterings of pleasure....The children started, screamed; their faces were
distorted with terror. (ch2, pg 20 1) The author is drawing a sharp mental image of pain and suffering
here, possibly regarding what it was like to be a child at the time the story was written. The author is
showing how little people care about the babies themselves in both of those quotes. No sane person
would find it okay to torture babies. When Mustapha Mond said You all remember, I suppose, that
beautiful and inspired saying of Our Ford s: History is bunk, (ch3, pg 34) the author was expressing

Argumentative Essay On Baroque Music
Baroque Music The word Baroque was derived from the word barroco, which is used to mean the
period in which western region widely used music especially in the nineteenth century to express how
the European artist practiced the art. When the historical happenings of the music in well explored, the
critics who applied the musical knowledge made it look strange and majorly sounded exaggerated.
Furthermore, ornamentals were initially used during the era of Bash and Handel. After the brand of
music had shed the connotations that were derogatory, baroques became one of the mot simplest and
convenient in the brand and one of the richest term, which in the diverse period was included the
musical history. Additionally, despite producing the music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Accordingly, the composers can start imagining about the inspiration the work of music has done as
well as the starting point of the artwork. Throughout the Baroque era, the composers of the music
earned a living through just writing the songs and were fortunate to be included in the payroll thus
perform the religious and political works that they were presented with during the time. The needs of
the institution in which the work was done dictated entirely which type of music that would be written
by the composers. When the Baroque music has been fully used will dictate the way the history of the
music can be perceived by the people and how gently they would be used to influence the belief of the
majority of the people and how important they are to the society.
Characteristics of Baroque Music The dramatic and rhetoric composition of the music gave the
possibilities of generating new interests and the creation of a variety of sounds during the Baroque
period. Some of the major characteristics of the Baroque music were;

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Research Paper
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder which effects around five million women of
reproductive age in the United States (activebeat.co). The ovaries and adrenal glands excrete
abnormally high levels of male hormones which prevents the regular release of an egg, causing many
fluid filled sacs, or cysts, to form on the ovaries. Several types of cysts can be found on the ovaries of
someone diagnosed with PCOS, the most common being those developed during the menstrual cycle,
functional cysts. Follicular cysts are a subcategory of functional cysts formed by the overgrown
follicle resulting from an unreleased egg. When a follicle ruptures following the release of an egg, the
follicle may reseal and cause fluid buildup, resulting in a corpus luteum cyst; these cysts may enlarge
considerably, causing pain, bleeding, or twisting of the ovary (PCOS Awareness Association). Some
cysts resolve themselves in one to three months while others grow to be painfully large and require
surgery to remove. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Animal Fashions In The Fashion Industry
Animal fur and skin started being used centuries ago. It started as a functional material however in
time animal provided materials became a statement for high end fashion. Veganism movement started
70 years ago however only got popular last year. It is lead by 14 to 34 years olds aka millennial.
Fashion evolves and something new comes to the market everyday. Lately, healthy lifestyle is very
popular. The trend affected the fashion industry as well. Consumer became more aware of the harm,
fashion industry puts on animals in order to use their fur and skin. Animals are hanged, bled to death
and strangled with wire nooses. Each year around 31 million animal loses their lives
Leather is on of the biggest animal product market in the fashion industry. However, it is one of the
most brutal one. It can be made from couple different animals. Such as pic, goat, cow, sheep or
kangaroos, alligators and snakes like exotic animals which are more on the expensive side. Chinese
market also uses cats and dogs for leather production since the cost if lower when it s compared to the
other animals. Most of the leather products consumer sees on the market comes from China and India.
Where are the places animals harmed the most. Another big market is the fur industry. Also most fur
comes from China as well. The cheapest methods are used to kill the animals. Such as poisoning them,
giving gas or electrocution method which an breathing creature should never experience. Fur industry

MacEwan University, Department of Biology.
Abstract: Trophic cascades are powerful forces that have a pronounced effect on ecosystems. They
occur when predation causes shifts in prey dynamics that indirectly lead to enhanced survival in the
next lowest trophic level. Walleye fishing bans at Lac la Biche coinciding with a restocking effort
have led to a large recovery of walleye populations. The increase in populations of a high trophic level
predator should cause shifts in a lower trophic level species (yellow perch) prey preferences from fish
towards invertebrate prey. 576 yellow perch stomach collected from 2009 2013 by Alberta
Environment and Sustainable Resource Development were sent to MacEwan University for
processing/analysis. Yellow perch stomachs will be measured (dry weight, empty weight), and prey
items will be removed identified and weighed. Sampling procedure differs depending on the type of
prey item removed from the stomach (fish, macro and micro invertebrates). Length and weight
measurements will be taken for fish and macro invertebrates; whereas, micro invertebrates will be sub
sampled until 50 100 individuals can be identified. Data will be analyzed using multi

Catholic Social Teaching Essay
Three important Catholic Social Teachings for us to take into account when considering Caritas
actions in the Pacific are Stewardship of Creation, Preferential Option for the Poor and Subsidiarity.
Stewardship is a Catholic Social Teaching which instructs us that we the people have a responsibility
to maintain and take care of the environmental resources, for we are the guardians of the land, not the
true owners. Stewardship is us, God s Creation, having a responsibility to care for the gifts God has
given us, with an emphasis on the environment as disregarding it and not taking care of it will have
detrimental effects on generations to come. This Catholic Social Teaching is interlinked with the
Maori view of Kaitiakitanga, that we are guardians and stewards of the land and are holding it for
future generations to come. Because as in the Maori proverb:

We need to share the water and food from this earth with the whole human family. (Social Justice
Week 2014 Catholic Social Teaching). Stewardship is a Catholic Social Teaching evident in scripture
and is shown in Genesis 2:15, Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden
to cultivate it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). In this, we can see how Catholics are called to look after the
land by cultivating it in the best way so that we may keep it, just as it is in the scripture. The scripture
is telling us that God has entrusted us, his creation, to the task of looking after his creation with
harmony and development, protecting it from harm. The idea of we the people having the
responsibility to look after God s creation for all of creation, is an idea that Pope Francis reflects on in
his Laudato Si #68 when he says This responsibility for God s earth means that human beings,
endowed with intelligence, must respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria existing between

The Importance Of Religions
Before I begin to talk about my personal calling, allow me to share some wisdom I heard at my first
SEND Conference in the Fall of 2014. Christians make such a major ordeal of their call . In churches
across the country, people ask others what s your call or use a lack of a Macedonian Call as an excuse
to not be evangelistic. I came to Holmes with that mindset. I knew I was called to missions. I had gone
to Honduras in September 2011. Before that, I had heard Isaiah 6:8 while Steve Harrelson was trying
to recruit people for the trip. I knew that I had always loved history, geography, and anything
involving other cultures. My favorite channel was the Travel Channel; my favorite program was

Jamie Dunning spoke about his work among the people of Kenya using sustainable missions. He
spoke about using micro business loans to start chicken houses for the people of Kenya. It gives them
a job and source of income/food in an economy where money and food are scarce. It also gives the
people, the indigenous church, a self reliant mindset. This may sound brash or strange but consider
how a strongly independent people feel when they are the recipient of a welfare state mindset in
regard to missions? They feel stupid, weak and dependent on outside sources. In turn, this causes them
to view the religion of the missionary as something foreign or not their own . That is the polar
opposite of what we desire for the indigenous church (a term borrowed from Melvin Hodge). The
church is a united network of multicultural, multiethnic, and international groups who work for a
single purpose. Paul uses the analogy of the human body quite befittingly in regard to the Body of
Christ. ( The Indigenous Church by Melvin Hodge. Title quoted not line from book) Because of the
Dunning s use of sustainable missions, the church is not only growing in Kenya but also sustaining
itself. They have pride in what they do. They are able to share the Gospel by providing for the social
needs of the people. This is biblical social justice at work (Isaiah 56:1). This has inspired me to follow
suit and practice sustainable missions in whatever regard

Summary Of Chains By Laurie Halse Anderson
The book Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, shows that true strength is achieved by fighting for what
you believe in. Isabel looks up to the memory of her father when he showed true strength to protect
his family. When Isabel tries to show true strength to prove to herself that she is a lion she fails. When
Isabel believes that she can save Ruth, Isabel achieves true strength. Isabel is not born with the true
strength she shows later in the book; it is through struggle that Isabel attains it, just like her father,
when it became necessary. Isabel s father shows true strength when he fights to keep his family
together. Poppa fought like a lion when they came for him, the strongest lion, roaring; it took five of

Lead Sinker Lab Report
This lab s problem asked how the heat capacity of a lead sinker can be determined (Bridges 192). The
hypothesis stated for the first experiment that if the lead sinker is heated in boiling water, placed in a
calorimeter, and tracked consistently for the temperature, then the heat capacity of the lead sinker can
be calculated because with the mass of the lead sinker, the original volume and mass of the water, and
before and after temperature checks of the water, the data collected can be used with available
formulas for heat capacity to find the heat capacity of the lead. This statement was not supported by
the data for the first experiment because the margins of error were too great to affirm the hypothesis.
Likewise, though there wasn t a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A Cheeto Puff was used as the food sample in the second experiment. The heat capacity of the sinker
was determined by dividing the heat absorbed by the water by the sinker s temperature change and the
two values for each trial were determined to be 7.82 J/०C and 9.88 J/०C, with an average actual
specific heat capacity of 0.136 J/g०C, a 16.9% difference from the theoretical heat capacity of lead of
0.159 J/g०C. The percent difference was too vast to support the hypothesis, which required that heat
capacity be calculated accurately with little error. For this first experiment, performance errors that
contributed to the inconsistent results were the touching of the the thermometer to the calorimeter and
continuous, unnecessary movement of the thermometer, producing inaccurate measurements of the
water temperature. Likewise, the lead sinker was left out in the open for too long while transitioning
between the hot water bath and the calorimeter, causing heat and energy loss. In the second part of this
lab, which set out to determine the caloric capacity of the Cheeto Puff, the average calories per gram
found from the two trials were 0.330 Cal/g, in comparison to the 5.71 Cal/g that was determined from
the nutrition facts off the bag. This made for a percent difference of 1630%, far too great of a

Descriptive Essay On A Dreamy Island
Imagine a place of pure bliss, where time is seemingly endless, simplicity is valued and relaxation is a
top priority. In our everyday lives where stress is customary and chaos is routine, it is hard to visualize
a place of such carefreeness. I too believed there could be no such place until I found it for myself.
When I close my eyes and imagine, I can still clearly hear the gentle splash of the waves lapping the
shoreline, and feel the slight ocean breeze whizz through my hair, sending it flying in every direction.
During phases of anxiety and trouble, there is one place in particular that my heart longs to be. Marco
Island, Florida.
My father proposed the idea of vacationing on Marco Island before the summer of 2016 after hearing
multiple people rave to him about the breathtaking beaches and unforgettable experiences. My mother
and I had never heard of Marco Island, but after five short minutes of browsing through images online
of the picturesque island, we were instantly captivated and could not wait to see it for ourselves. After
what seemed like an eternity of waiting for our trip to commence, we finally arrived on the dreamy
island. Grinning from ear to ear, we buckled ourselves into the rental car, feeling anxious to explore.
Unlike in Missouri, glossy green palm trees lined every street, which made us feel like we had entered
an alternate universe. Rather than staying at a hotel, we rented a beach house that was supposedly only
a six minute walk from Marco

External Causes Of Aging
There are many reasons why your skin ages. The number one reason is aging. It is simply natural for
skin to become thinner, produce less collagen, elastin, and decrease cellular regeneration as you get
older. There is not much you can do about these internal causes of aging, but there are external causes
of aging skin that you can control to some extent.
The number one external reason skin ages is exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of direct sunlight
over extended periods. Ultraviolet rays break down elastin and collagen and hamper the production of
new collagen, which the skin naturally produces to repair the damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun
also significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. This is true for tanning beds and indoor tanning
equipment. Fortunately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A sedentary lifestyle will slow circulation, and over time contribute to prematurely aging skin.
Exercise will also help you have more energy, which will make you look and feel younger.
Cold weather contributes to aging skin, especially cold wind. It dries out the skin causing wrinkles.
When you need to go outside in cold weather, you can protect your face with a good moisturizer.
Indoors the air may be heated and dry. This is also not good for the skin. A humidifier can reduce the
dryness in the air its aging effects on the skin.
Regular consumption of alcohol will gradually dilate the small blood vessels in the skin and increase
the blood flow near the surface of the skin, especially on the face. This condition can become
permanent and create a flushed appearance caused by broken blood vessels. Alcohol also dehydrates
the skin causing wrinkles.
A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables as well as Omega 3 fatty acids will go a long way to
protect the skin against premature aging. Regularly eating too much sugar may cause glycation, which
will harm collagen and eventually cause a loss of elasticity and

The War On Poverty And Poverty
The War on Poverty
Poverty in the United States would appear to be an oxymoron. Considering the United States of
America is one of the most prolific economies in today s global market. However, according to the US
Census Bureau forty seven million Americans live in poverty today. Poverty condemns millions of
people throughout the world to live in deplorable and inhuman conditions. These people are trapped in
a cycle of poverty, living in places offering little protection from the rain, wind, and cold (George
671). Despite poverty being a major problem within the boarders of the United States, American
government disperses over fifty billion dollars to relieve similar situations in third world countries. A
more logical allocation of resources would be to address the problem right here at home rather than
blindly giving to the poor of the rest of the world.
Fifty two years ago in 1964 United States President Lyndon Johnson declared War on Poverty in his
State of the Union Address saying This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional
war on poverty in America. Our objective is total victory. This declaration of war marked the
beginning of a campaign that sparked many anti poverty programs. These programs include the
Economic Opportunity Act, Head Start, Community Action Program, and Job Corps. Johnson targeted
the causes of poverty rather than the mere consequences of it. Since the War on Poverty took effect in
the US the quality of life and

History of Cosmetology Nail Care
Cosmetology is the study and application of beauty treatment. Branches of specialty including

Nail Technology is the art and science of beautifying and improving the nails and skin of the hands
and feet.
The history of nail care reveals some intriguing facts. It was a part of aristocracy and a symbol of
status in ancient times. It was in the nineteenth century that nail care started to become a part of
fashion and glamour. Today nail salons all over the world offer various nail care services and plenty of
nail care products are available for use in home but it still in some way reflects that symbolism of
aristocracy and status. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
History of Nail Care in the Nineteenth Century
With the social and technological developments, new tools for nail care began to emerge in Europe. In
1830 a foot doctor named Sitts invented a wooden manicure tool. Before that metal rod, acid, scissors
etc. were used for manicure. Almond shaped nails or slightly pointed nail styles were popular at that
time.
In 1890 s these trends reached United States. Soon many salons started to offer nail care services to
women. But mostly nail care was a personal thing; women usually took care of their nails by
themselves.
History of nail Care in the Twentieth Century
In the beginning of Twentieth century nail care and nail polish become hugely popular by courtesy of
glamorous Hollywood film stars. New companies were coming in the market with new nail care tools
and techniques. New nail paints and shades arrived together with polish removers, nail protectors and
other tools that made it possible to choose any style at any time and complement the overall dress up
with a matching nail color. At that time manicure was done in barber shops not in beauty salons.
1970 s was the era of artificial nails. These nails looked real, were usually long and worn by the rich.
Soon nail drills were introduced to use on acrylic nails. Nail charms, gold nails as well as nail art were
getting popular. Then French manicure arrived in the market and it was ruled the

Review Of The Movie Contemporary Japanese Cinema
In contemporary Japanese cinema, a common theme that is portrayed is that of the failing family.
Films with this theme show families that do not fit the ideal family image and are instead riddled with
issues and problems that conflict that prevent the families from being whole and can lead to the
separation and breakage of them. One film that has aspects of the failing family theme is Ringu (1998)
directed by Hideo Nakata; a film about a tape that curses and kills the viewer in seven days after
watching which prompts the lead character, Reiko Asakawa, to stop the curse. The failing family
theme is expressed through two different families, Reiko s family and Sadako s family, which both
show, in different ways, the failings of their respective families and what those themes convey in their
depiction. These families show together how the failings and problems they have impact the family
members in negative ways.
Reiko s family is one example of the failing family theme in Ringu. Reiko is a single mother, divorced
from her ex husband Ryuji, who lives with her son Yoichi on their own. She is independent, and able
to financially provide for the both of them as a journalist. This separates her from the traditional
domestic Japanese woman ideal as she lives independently from any patriarchal figure (Wee, p. 157).
However, the film implies that Reiko is not home as often as she should as she mentions to Ryuji that
Yoichi is fine on his own because he is used to it (Nakata, 1998).

slippers which are too large for her. While walking along, a slipper is stolen by a boy who wants it for
his own selfish reasons. As the story goes on it explains that she is sent out by her father who appears
to be abusive. The story mentions how her father will land blows for not being able to sell matchsticks
to make money for the family. One can only wonder about her parents, maybe they are physically
unable to go out themselves. Is her father projecting his anger onto her because of his own failures?.
Not succeeding at it she ends up trying to go into survival mode and warm herself with the matches,

Financial Crisis And The Crisis
Summary Mortgage backed securities and subprime mortgage crisis were generally thought to be the
cause of the 2008 financial crisis. This paper will be discussing the cause of the financial crisis and the
relationship between mortgage backed securities and the crisis. The paper will further describe the
actions taken by the government to recover the securities. The Cause of the Financial Crisis and the
Recovery It is believed by many and known by some that the historical damage in the crisis of 2008,
called the financial crisis was pushed by the housing bubble. The recent crisis was the biggest horror
around the world since the Great Depression. Prices of houses were rising since the year of 1999 and

In fact, MBS has a structure where borrowers, or homeowners, pass through their principal and
interest payments to the owner, or investor, of the MBS. The housing market was at all times high and
everyone was attracted to invest in this sector. However, there was not enough money for the public to
buy houses at such a high price and as a result, people sought for ways including seeking home loans
from local banks. Even people with bad credit history were motivated to buy houses for the high gains
thereafter. The banks and brokers lent out money at the prime lending rate to people with average
credit history, while lending at a higher than prime lending rate to people with bad credit history,
without much prior investigations. At the same time, investment banks offered attractive rates of
returns to the investors of MBS. As MBS are often repackaged and resold as obligations to collateral
debts, the lower quality of credit ultimately resulted massive defaults as the housing market declined.
Superficially, the high interest subprime loan presents nothing that is devious or illegal, it is simply a
case of lender taking on a higher risk and receiving a higher interest rate in compensation. Yet, nearly
half of the loans made in 2006 were of the subprime variety, which increased the risk of borrowers
defaulting on many banks balance sheets. According to the Brookings study notes, Prime mortgages
dropped to 64% of the total in

Damascus Steel Research Paper
Damascus Steel is a forged steel that comes out of the Middle East. It is thought to have been invented
around 1100 to 1700. It is amazingly sharp and was said to be able to cut though other swords such as
European swords. It is said that they can even cut though rocks. Although the recipe to make real
Damascus steel is lost to history. No one really knows how it was made. The one thing that we do
know is that a steel called Wootz steel. All the makers of Damascus steel use this steel as a base for

One way that this is thought to have been achieved is alternating hard bands of iron with softer more
flexible bands of iron giving you the best of both worlds. Another thought is that they where made
with a small amount of vanadium. This might have been what gave Damascus steel its amazing
strength. now how it got the name is still a matter of opinion. Most people would think that the reason
that they are called Damascus is that that is where they are made. There is a though that they might be
named after that man that first made them. It is thought that the man that first made the Damascus
steel is in faced named Damashqu, and that is where they got there legendary name. This steel was
originally made using ore from a mine. This ore had a certain chemical composition, and well for lack
of a better word this mine was mind tell it was empty, so they just ran out of the material used to make

My College Admission Analysis
I have imagined what my college experience would be like since I was in elementary school. I am
from a large family that is passionate about sports and all of their respective alma maters. Colleges and
their various merits have always been a part of our family dialogue. I have had plenty of time to
consider the many aspects of college such as, size, location, resources, career development and
campus life. The college experience I desire has me more suited to small to medium size campuses.
Top notch academics, a well regarded reputation and many opportunities for undergraduate research
and mentorship are also key items to consider in my search. Resources and facilities have to be such

Campus life needs to host a vibrant, diverse and welcoming community. I choose Baylor because it
fulfills every component of my college wish list. I have fallen in love with the Baylor campus after
seeing it first hand during two different Spring Premiere events and I am very excited to apply to
Baylor University. The open campus has charming little pockets to meet with friends and is easy to
navigate. I know many current students and alumni from Baylor who have only positive things to say
about the school and its courses. Many of my friends are also applying at Baylor. My grandparents
were both graduates of Baylor. They are encouraging me to attend the school because of its great
academic curriculum and strong christian values. I would like to attend Baylor because I believe it will
be a truly transformational experience. I am interested in global health and medical humanities. The
Medical Humanities Program at Baylor University is one of only a few programs of its kind in the
country. Most of the doctors I know agree that medicine is moving toward an emphasis and

Cause And Effects Of Global Warming
Global warming is an increase of Earth s temperature throughout a period of time. Global warming is
a disease that is one of the root causes of Earth s illness. This invisible change has a lot of drastic
effects on mankind, wildlife as well as nature. The reasons to these destructions are humans
themselves. There are some very obvious ways to tackle the situation. Many of the extraordinary
weather changes since the 1950 s are recorded in the instrumental temperature record which stretches
out to the mid 19th Century while having thousands of years according to the Paleoclimate Proxy
Records [IPCC Climate]. Temperature across the whole world is predicted to change throughout this
century and continuing. The Earth s ability to tackle the emission of heat trapping gases, as well as the
amount of gases released will predict the magnitude of global climate change [NASA].
Scientists are sure that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to
greenhouse gases produced by human activities. 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature rise is
predicted over the next century by a group of 1300 scientists of The Intergovernmental Panel of
Climate Change (IPCC) from the United States[IPCC]. Climate change will have different effects on
different regions depending on the adapting ability with time, of that region, said IPCC. A 1 to 3
degree Celsius increase in global temperature will have deadly consequences in some region and

Critical Appreciation Of Judith Decapitating Holofernes
From Whitney Chadwick third edition of Women, Art, and Society, the piece of artwork that engaged
me deeply from this book is the 17th Century Italian Baroque painting Judith Decapitating Holofernes
c. 1618 by Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. This painting is oil on canvas painting in the style of
classical Italian Baroque characteristics of chiaroscuro, dramatic realism, naturalistic, and rich vivid
colors. What I see physically at first from the painting is at the center of the work a violent action is
being played out by two young women using a sword to behead a man s head while he s in bed. I can
see the arm strength of Judith and her maidservant in the way they re holding the man down to keep
him still while their killing him and in the way the artist arranges the women s arms. I also see the
amazement, terror, and vulnerability Holofernes is feeling by the way Artemisia painted in such detail
in the look in his unnaturally wide eyes due to shock, his mouth is open like he s either screaming for
help or in pain, and how his body is contorted in an uncomfortable arrangement almost like he s trying
to get up to stop this assault. What mostly draws me and holds my attention to this painting is the raw
intensified emotion Artemisia can show of the three characters in this dramatic climatic scene, how
theatrical she is with the blood when Judith cuts into Holofernes neck, raw emotions, and how to me
other paintings seem so tame compared to Artemisia Judith. I

Shell-Less Egg Lab
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to explore how an organism s internal environment is affected
when exposed to different external environments, the eggs modeling humans.
Testable Question
How much will a shell less egg change in mass if it is soaked in distilled water and Monster Energy
Drink for 30 minutes?
Hypothesis
If a shell less egg is soaked in corn syrup for 30 minutes, then its mass will decrease by 3 grams.
If a shell less egg is soaked in distilled water for 30 minutes, then its mass will not change.
If a shell less egg is soaked in Monster Energy Drink for 30 minutes, then its mass will decrease by 5
grams.

Reflection
1.The vinegar is an isotonic environment for the egg. There is already balance in the solutions of these
things. I believe the corn syrup and the monster energy drink weakened the external barrier of the egg,
penetrated the egg through its pores, and caused the egg to release its contents, which decreased its
mass. I think the distilled water wasn t strong enough to negatively weaken the egg s barrier, but
actually strengthen the egg by penetrating to a safe extent, therefore providing benefits .
2.Corn syrup and the energy drink caused the egg mass change percentages of 5.8% and 1.6%, while
distilled water caused an increase of 2.9%. If external environments didn t affect internal
environments, then these results would be flat. Also, after the experiment, our eggs looked plumper
than before the experiment.
3.I was surprised that the vinegar didn t cause a change in the egg s mass. Vinegar was the most acidic
liquid tested, so this makes me wonder if eggs have the same pH as vinegar. Since vinegar was used to
destroy the shell of the egg, my reasoning was that since the shell is stronger than the inside barrier,
then it will destroy that barrier easily as

Then and Now: Changes of Racism, Sexism, and Classism
In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout, the protagonists in the book, experience and
learn about the problems of racism, sexism, and classism when their father, Atticus, agrees to defend
Tom Robinson, an African American, in a trial. Set in the 1930s, most people were treated unfairly
because of their race, gender, or social class. Even though problems about race, gender, and class
decreased over time, these problems are still very prevalent today. Even though racism decreased
dramatically over the past decades, there are still problems today that are strikingly similar to the
problems in To Kill A Mockingbird. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to Jem and Scout
about the unfairness of court: when it s a white man s word against a black man s, the white man
always wins. They re ugly, but those are the facts of life (Lee 220). Even though this was set in the
1930 s, juries from court still have a racial bias to this day. In fact, from the Sentencing Project, an
organization that advocates change in sentencing policy and advocating alternatives to incarceration, it
has been shown that African Americans are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white males...
if current trends continue, one of every three black Americans can expect to go to prison in his lifetime
(Sentencing Project 1). In the United States, people have come a

The Caribbean History
Derek Walcott and Jean Rhys both have texts that use the fragments of the Caribbean history to create
their texts. Walcott has mentioned in many essays and interviews how important it is for the artist to
not become disillusioned and bitter about history. Rather, artists should make use of these fragments of
European, African, and native Arawak/Amerindian, to reinvent and create a voice that entails all of
those influences.
Walcott redefines and reinvents the literary epic in Omeros and Rhys challenges the ignored narrative
of Bertha/Antoinette in Wide Sargasso Sea. In Omeros, I propose on demonstrating how Walcott uses
Helen as a symbol of the St. Lucia and how her struggle represents the struggle of the island. I will
investigate the images of the victimized Helen of Troy in contrast with this Antillean Helen who,
rather than a victim, is the seducer of the men, and resists the domination of the men and the effects of
colonialism. This gives Helen a tremendous amount of power. She represents the beauty and desire
through which the men of St. Lucia define themselves. I will zoom in on how Walcott uses Helen
through her resistance of the influences of New World and the tourism to show how the natives still
try to hold on to their traditions and strive to create their own identities in an environment that is
constantly causing the natives to reinvent themselves to suit the colonizers and tourists. Walcott uses
Ma Kilman as the mother healer who heals the wounds of

Fog In Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens diplomatically uses symbolism throughout the novel to portend upcoming conflicts.
The horses with drooping heads and tremulous tails (16) struggled to march up the harsh conditions of
the lofty hill. The horses embodies King Louis XIV, Queen Marie Antoinette, and aristocrats of
France. The rulers and aristocrats eventually face death due to the dissatisfaction of the people about
the dying economy. The horses drooping heads epitomizes the King, Queen, and the aristocrats heads
under the guillotine, which leads to their appalling death. As the passengers of the carriage, along with
the horses, trudged up the the precipitous hill, they had to walk through a curtain of fog that was
enough to shut out everything from the light (16). The fog best exemplifies the unpredictable future of
the aristocrats because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the passengers and company hiked up the steep hill, they mashed their way through the thick mud
(16). The thick mud prefigures the difficulties and conflicts the aristocrats have to face in the end for
ignoring the suffering and poverty of the people around them. The story takes place on a Friday night
in November, one thousand seven hundred and seventy five (17). Dickens chose a night in November
because the month has more dark and gloomy weather and color during the day than luminous and
radiant. The month s gloom and darkness foreshadows the many deaths of the aristocrats and the
depression feeling of the lower class. On the Friday night of November, the passengers were
lumbering up Shooter s hill (17) to get the the Dover Mail. Shooter s hill is steep, muddy, and
sufficient with many obstacles. The hill presages the tough obstacles the upper class will encounter
because of their money and arrogance towards the lower class. The setting is a strategy used by the
author to foretell future events and and set a

Moral Distress And Avoidance Behavior
In the article ¨Moral Distress And Avoidance Behavior In Nurses Working In Critical Care And
Noncritical Care Units, by Mary Jo De Villers, she states ¨it has been predicted that there will be a
shortage of 500,000 nurses in the United States by 2025.¨ This counts for the United States alone.
Many articles state that more and more research is being done on moral distress relating to nurses all
around. This leaves researchers wondering, could this be the main reason for the shortage of nurses?
Moral distress comes into play dramatically with specific nurses such as pediatric intensive care,
neonatal intensive care, and intensive care unit. Many of the nurses have to deal with life or death
situations on a daily basis working in those units. Dealing with that dilemma daily makes it harder for
this medical staff to go back to the hospital. All nurses deal with some kind of moral distress, but
critical care nurses suffer from a more intense level of distress. There are many factors that play into
the shortage of nurses. In Anthony Tuckett s study, he discovers reasons why nurses are leaving the
profession. In attempt to understand, he interviewed nurses and asked for their opinion on the lack of
physicians assistant. Overall, Tuckett concluded that the primary reasons for this are no manager
support, co worker support, and the fact that business policies are put before caring for the patient
(364). New nurses feel belittled when entering the profession and old nurses feel as

  • 2. Examples Of Cognitive Dissonance And Violence A psychologist would apply the psychological school of thought of cognitive dissonance theory to the theme of violence. Cognitive dissonance theory is when there is inconsistency within the person, they tend to do things to eliminate dissonance and gain consistency with themselves. People who are in cognitive dissonance use violent acts to get back into consistency. This is shown in the movie Crash when Farhad tries to kill Daniels daughter Laura because Farhad thinks that Daniel robbed is store. Farhad being in cognitive dissonance goes to Daniels house and tries to shoot him. But, Laura walks in front of him trying to save him. Farhad feels the only way to come back to consistency is to take revenge on Daniel. Another example can be seen in the movie American History X when the reporter interviews Derek about his father s death. After his father s death Derek was in dissonance, he thinks to only way to get back into consistency is to hate black people. He commits violent acts not only physically but verbally to black people. Violence is also shown in the movie Pleasantville when the non colored people destroy Bill s diner and all his paintings that he drew. In Made in Dagenham violence is displayed when Eddie hits the pillow to take out his anger because he is mad at Rita. Lastly, in the movie In Out violence is shown when Emily is in dissonance because Howard came out on the wedding day so she resorts to violence and punches Howard in the face. • 3. The Four Key Trade Policy Of The European Union Legislation When Poland joined the European Union legislation, it has led to wide ranging reforms in economic regulation and has decreased government intervention in the private sector. Changes in areas such as financial markets, company and competition law, accounting, and intellectual property rights have improved the environment for private business and increased economic growth. The European Union trade policy and regulation sets the direction for trade and investment in and out of the European Union. There are four key trade policies that the EU is working towards. Firstly, to create a global system for fair and open trade. The World Trade Organization shapes a system of global trade rules that keeps the global economy open for trade as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Europe has opened its markets to all imports from the world s poorest countries, and works actively to help developing countries build the capacity to take advantage of trade. They also use the trade policy to reinforce other important international goals (European Commission 2017). In the power sector of Poland, coal takes the gold. It is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions as well as a major employer. Under Poland s new energy plan, it is set to prioritise long term energy security, putting a strong hold on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, while increasing energy efficiency and decarbonising the transport system (IEA 2017). There are over 770 hydropower plants in poland. For many years, water has been a dominant source of energy produced from renewable sources. Most polish hydropower resources are located in the area of the Vistula River. In certain policy documents, such as Poland s Energy Policy until 2030 and he National Action Plan in the Field of Renewable Energy, hydropower is said to be mainly based on the use of existing damming to produce electricity (Pigeor 2012). A focal point for great flow between sources of supply and consumers, is a warehouse. A warehouse is a space for storage and handling of goods and material. • 4. Compare And Contrast Achilles And Odysseus Achilles and Odysseus are quite different in the way they view combat and take down their enemies. Achilles seems to rely on his physical prowess, often charging in headfirst into battle using surprise and brute force to overpower his opponent whereas Odysseus has a tendency to use his intelligence and cunning nature in both the battlefield and politics as he stealthily plans the demise of his unsuspecting opponent. Gnashing his teeth with rage, Achilles leaped from his chariot, made for his enemy, and lunged out at him with his sword (341). Even when faced with a seemingly invincible assailant, Achilles uses his anger and sheer power to overtake Cycnus and impulsively attacks his unblemished skin in the hopes to end his life. It is Achilles agile and finesse in battle that has led to many victories for him. Even though the reasoning for his actions are more simplistic and even quite animalistic in some scenarios, it is this godlike strength and vicious temper that makes him the physical embodiment of a vengeful hero and in the Greeks stories he possesses all of the physical traits a hero should exemplify. For now Odysseus began to boil with envy and thought up a despicable plan to end his rival (342). Odysseus is quick and decisive in his actions but he relies on his sly nature to defeat and overwhelm his opponent in battle. Odysseus is valued for his wisdom and fair counsel, he has experience in the real world and this shows in the way he manipulates and even plays ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Brave New World Satire Analysis In Aldous Huxley s Brave New World, satire is used to show how ridiculous modern society was in the 1930s. Huxley refers to a variety of themes, ranging from the decay of morals and culture to drug dependency to brainwashing to others. Huxley also speaks of how the world in the 1930s is getting too liberal, nobody cares about each other, and how if you have a problem you can just take drugs until it is no longer a problem. The main thing Huxley speaks about is moral and cultural decay in modern society. chaps 16 and 18. Nobody cares about history or each other, just progress and making money. The ...I m working on a wonderful Delta Minus ovary... (ch1, pg 9) shows that they are harvesting organs from babies. This could be a reference to organ farming in the 1930s. Huxley may have been feeling particularly morbid when he wrote From the ranks of crawling babies came little squeals of excitement, gurgles and twitterings of pleasure....The children started, screamed; their faces were distorted with terror. (ch2, pg 20 1) The author is drawing a sharp mental image of pain and suffering here, possibly regarding what it was like to be a child at the time the story was written. The author is showing how little people care about the babies themselves in both of those quotes. No sane person would find it okay to torture babies. When the historical happenings of the music in well explored, the critics who applied the musical knowledge made it look strange and majorly sounded exaggerated. • 7. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Research Paper Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder which effects around five million women of reproductive age in the United States (activebeat.co). The ovaries and adrenal glands excrete abnormally high levels of male hormones which prevents the regular release of an egg, causing many fluid filled sacs, or cysts, to form on the ovaries. Several types of cysts can be found on the ovaries of someone diagnosed with PCOS, the most common being those developed during the menstrual cycle, functional cysts. Follicular cysts are a subcategory of functional cysts formed by the overgrown follicle resulting from an unreleased egg. When a follicle ruptures following the release of an egg, the follicle may reseal and cause fluid buildup, resulting in a corpus luteum cyst; these cysts may enlarge considerably, causing pain, bleeding, or twisting of the ovary (PCOS Awareness Association). Yellow Perch (Perca flavenscens) Food Chain Dynamics in Lac la Biche, Alberta Proposal Jacob Thalen, Feb, 5, 2015 ThalenJ2@mymacewan.ca MacEwan University, Department of Biology Done in part for the requirements of BIOL 498 under the supervision of Dr. David Locky Dr. Mrinal Das. MacEwan University, Department of Biology. Abstract: Trophic cascades are powerful forces that have a pronounced effect on ecosystems. They occur when predation causes shifts in prey dynamics that indirectly lead to enhanced survival in the next lowest trophic level. Walleye fishing bans at Lac la Biche coinciding with a restocking effort have led to a large recovery of walleye populations. The increase in populations of a high trophic level predator should cause shifts in a lower trophic level species (yellow perch) prey preferences from fish towards invertebrate prey. 576 yellow perch stomach collected from 2009 2013 by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development were sent to MacEwan University for processing/analysis. Yellow perch stomachs will be measured (dry weight, empty weight), and prey items will be removed identified and weighed. Sampling procedure differs depending on the type of prey item removed from the stomach (fish, macro and micro invertebrates). Length and weight measurements will be taken for fish and macro invertebrates; whereas, micro invertebrates will be sub sampled until 50 100 individuals can be identified. • 10. Catholic Social Teaching Essay Three important Catholic Social Teachings for us to take into account when considering Caritas actions in the Pacific are Stewardship of Creation, Preferential Option for the Poor and Subsidiarity. Stewardship is a Catholic Social Teaching which instructs us that we the people have a responsibility to maintain and take care of the environmental resources, for we are the guardians of the land, not the true owners. Stewardship is us, God s Creation, having a responsibility to care for the gifts God has given us, with an emphasis on the environment as disregarding it and not taking care of it will have detrimental effects on generations to come. This Catholic Social Teaching is interlinked with the Maori view of Kaitiakitanga, that we are guardians and stewards of the land and are holding it for future generations to come. (Social Justice Week 2014 Catholic Social Teaching). Stewardship is a Catholic Social Teaching evident in scripture and is shown in Genesis 2:15, Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). In this, we can see how Catholics are called to look after the land by cultivating it in the best way so that we may keep it, just as it is in the scripture. The scripture is telling us that God has entrusted us, his creation, to the task of looking after his creation with harmony and development, protecting it from harm. The idea of we the people having the responsibility to look after God s creation for all of creation, is an idea that Pope Francis reflects on in his Laudato Si #68 when he says This responsibility for God s earth means that human beings, endowed with intelligence, must respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria existing between the creature of the ... • 11. The Importance Of Religions Before I begin to talk about my personal calling, allow me to share some wisdom I heard at my first SEND Conference in the Fall of 2014. Christians make such a major ordeal of their call . In churches across the country, people ask others what s your call or use a lack of a Macedonian Call as an excuse to not be evangelistic. I came to Holmes with that mindset. I knew I was called to missions. I had gone to Honduras in September 2011. Before that, I had heard Isaiah 6:8 while Steve Harrelson was trying to recruit people for the trip. I knew that I had always loved history, geography, and anything involving other cultures. Jamie Dunning spoke about his work among the people of Kenya using sustainable missions. He spoke about using micro business loans to start chicken houses for the people of Kenya. It gives them a job and source of income/food in an economy where money and food are scarce. It also gives the people, the indigenous church, a self reliant mindset. This may sound brash or strange but consider how a strongly independent people feel when they are the recipient of a welfare state mindset in regard to missions? They feel stupid, weak and dependent on outside sources. In turn, this causes them to view the religion of the missionary as something foreign or not their own . That is the polar opposite of what we desire for the indigenous church (a term borrowed from Melvin Hodge). The church is a united network of multicultural, multiethnic, and international groups who work for a single purpose. Paul uses the analogy of the human body quite befittingly in regard to the Body of Christ. ( The Indigenous Church by Melvin Hodge. Title quoted not line from book) Because of the Dunning s use of sustainable missions, the church is not only growing in Kenya but also sustaining itself. They have pride in what they do. • 12. Summary Of Chains By Laurie Halse Anderson The book Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, shows that true strength is achieved by fighting for what you believe in. Isabel looks up to the memory of her father when he showed true strength to protect his family. When Isabel tries to show true strength to prove to herself that she is a lion she fails. When Isabel believes that she can save Ruth, Isabel achieves true strength. Isabel is not born with the true strength she shows later in the book; it is through struggle that Isabel attains it, just like her father, when it became necessary. Isabel s father shows true strength when he fights to keep his family together. • 13. Lead Sinker Lab Report This lab s problem asked how the heat capacity of a lead sinker can be determined (Bridges 192). The hypothesis stated for the first experiment that if the lead sinker is heated in boiling water, placed in a calorimeter, and tracked consistently for the temperature, then the heat capacity of the lead sinker can be calculated because with the mass of the lead sinker, the original volume and mass of the water, and before and after temperature checks of the water, the data collected can be used with available formulas for heat capacity to find the heat capacity of the lead. This statement was not supported by the data for the first experiment because the margins of error were too great to affirm the hypothesis. Likewise, though there wasn t a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A Cheeto Puff was used as the food sample in the second experiment. The heat capacity of the sinker was determined by dividing the heat absorbed by the water by the sinker s temperature change and the two values for each trial were determined to be 7.82 J/०C and 9.88 J/०C, with an average actual specific heat capacity of 0.136 J/g०C, a 16.9% difference from the theoretical heat capacity of lead of 0.159 J/g०C. The percent difference was too vast to support the hypothesis, which required that heat capacity be calculated accurately with little error. For this first experiment, performance errors that contributed to the inconsistent results were the touching of the the thermometer to the calorimeter and continuous, unnecessary movement of the thermometer, producing inaccurate measurements of the water temperature. Likewise, the lead sinker was left out in the open for too long while transitioning between the hot water bath and the calorimeter, causing heat and energy loss. In the second part of this lab, which set out to determine the caloric capacity of the Cheeto Puff, the average calories per gram found from the two trials were 0.330 Cal/g, in comparison to the 5.71 Cal/g that was determined from the nutrition facts off the bag. In our everyday lives where stress is customary and chaos is routine, it is hard to visualize a place of such carefreeness. I too believed there could be no such place until I found it for myself. When I close my eyes and imagine, I can still clearly hear the gentle splash of the waves lapping the shoreline, and feel the slight ocean breeze whizz through my hair, sending it flying in every direction. During phases of anxiety and trouble, there is one place in particular that my heart longs to be. Marco Island, Florida. My father proposed the idea of vacationing on Marco Island before the summer of 2016 after hearing multiple people rave to him about the breathtaking beaches and unforgettable experiences. My mother and I had never heard of Marco Island, but after five short minutes of browsing through images online of the picturesque island, we were instantly captivated and could not wait to see it for ourselves. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for our trip to commence, we finally arrived on the dreamy island. Grinning from ear to ear, we buckled ourselves into the rental car, feeling anxious to explore. Unlike in Missouri, glossy green palm trees lined every street, which made us feel like we had entered an alternate universe. • 15. External Causes Of Aging There are many reasons why your skin ages. The number one reason is aging. It is simply natural for skin to become thinner, produce less collagen, elastin, and decrease cellular regeneration as you get older. There is not much you can do about these internal causes of aging, but there are external causes of aging skin that you can control to some extent. The number one external reason skin ages is exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of direct sunlight over extended periods. Ultraviolet rays break down elastin and collagen and hamper the production of new collagen, which the skin naturally produces to repair the damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun also significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. This is true for tanning beds and indoor tanning equipment. Fortunately, ... Considering the United States of America is one of the most prolific economies in today s global market. However, according to the US Census Bureau forty seven million Americans live in poverty today. Poverty condemns millions of people throughout the world to live in deplorable and inhuman conditions. These people are trapped in a cycle of poverty, living in places offering little protection from the rain, wind, and cold (George 671). Despite poverty being a major problem within the boarders of the United States, American government disperses over fifty billion dollars to relieve similar situations in third world countries. A more logical allocation of resources would be to address the problem right here at home rather than blindly giving to the poor of the rest of the world. Fifty two years ago in 1964 United States President Lyndon Johnson declared War on Poverty in his State of the Union Address saying This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America. Our objective is total victory. This declaration of war marked the beginning of a campaign that sparked many anti poverty programs. • 20. Review Of The Movie Contemporary Japanese Cinema In contemporary Japanese cinema, a common theme that is portrayed is that of the failing family. Films with this theme show families that do not fit the ideal family image and are instead riddled with issues and problems that conflict that prevent the families from being whole and can lead to the separation and breakage of them. One film that has aspects of the failing family theme is Ringu (1998) directed by Hideo Nakata; a film about a tape that curses and kills the viewer in seven days after watching which prompts the lead character, Reiko Asakawa, to stop the curse. The failing family theme is expressed through two different families, Reiko s family and Sadako s family, which both show, in different ways, the failings of their respective families and what those themes convey in their depiction. These families show together how the failings and problems they have impact the family members in negative ways. Reiko s family is one example of the failing family theme in Ringu. Reiko is a single mother, divorced from her ex husband Ryuji, who lives with her son Yoichi on their own. She is independent, and able to financially provide for the both of them as a journalist. This separates her from the traditional domestic Japanese woman ideal as she lives independently from any patriarchal figure (Wee, p. 157). However, the film implies that Reiko is not home as often as she should as she mentions to Ryuji that Yoichi is fine on his own because he is used to it (Nakata, 1998). ... Critical Appreciation Of Judith Decapitating Holofernes From Whitney Chadwick third edition of Women, Art, and Society, the piece of artwork that engaged me deeply from this book is the 17th Century Italian Baroque painting Judith Decapitating Holofernes c. 1618 by Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. This painting is oil on canvas painting in the style of classical Italian Baroque characteristics of chiaroscuro, dramatic realism, naturalistic, and rich vivid colors. What I see physically at first from the painting is at the center of the work a violent action is being played out by two young women using a sword to behead a man s head while he s in bed. I can see the arm strength of Judith and her maidservant in the way they re holding the man down to keep him still while their killing him and in the way the artist arranges the women s arms. I also see the amazement, terror, and vulnerability Holofernes is feeling by the way Artemisia painted in such detail in the look in his unnaturally wide eyes due to shock, his mouth is open like he s either screaming for help or in pain, and how his body is contorted in an uncomfortable arrangement almost like he s trying to get up to stop this assault. What mostly draws me and holds my attention to this painting is the raw intensified emotion Artemisia can show of the three characters in this dramatic climatic scene, how theatrical she is with the blood when Judith cuts into Holofernes neck, raw emotions, and how to me other paintings seem so tame compared to Artemisia Judith. Many articles state that more and more research is being done on moral distress relating to nurses all around. This leaves researchers wondering, could this be the main reason for the shortage of nurses? Moral distress comes into play dramatically with specific nurses such as pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and intensive care unit. Many of the nurses have to deal with life or death situations on a daily basis working in those units. Dealing with that dilemma daily makes it harder for this medical staff to go back to the hospital.
