Family Religious History

PHIL 110 ADF
Family Religious History
I grew up with my maternal grandparents in China. From an early age, I was taught the notion of
filial piety, paying respect to elderly members while making concessions to the younger members.
It plays a central role in my family as well as the families in which my grandparents came from.
My grandmother is born in a scholarly family heavily influenced by teachings of Confucianism.
Strict rules apply to how children should behave to show respect to adults. For instance, children
are not allowed to eat before adults begin eating, which exemplifies the belief that parents are
authoritative over children. Unlike her parents, my grandmother is not keen on being an
authoritative figure. She believes that a mutually respectful relationship with everyone regardless
of age is the key to a harmonious family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have adopted a secular view on traditions. Rather than accepting filial piety as an obligation, I see
it as a guide to the moral conducts. Making sacrifices means more of a duty to preserve my cultural
identity than a religious experience.
My grandfather, on the other hand, is from a poor, rural family. Although his family did not
enforce a harsh discipline which is derived from the notion of filial piety, he is the most pious
devotee to traditional practices in my family and sees filial piety as an obligation. It is his way of
showing reverence to his mother, who changed his course of life. Despite the meager income, my
great grandmother insisted on him to complete his college education so that he could find work
that allows him to escape poverty. He feels heavily indebted to

Dallas Cowboys Early Life
It was the biggest game of the year, what every person wants to win, the championship. The score
is tied 24 24 and the Idaho Hawks had the ball on twenty one yard line. It was third down and five
and they ran the ball for only two yards and it was fourth down. They went for the field goal and
got it. The scorewas 27 24 and the Texas Rams were ready to receive to it. On the return they ran
for twenty yards. With only five seconds left the quarterback, John Halen, threw the ball to James
Morgan. Morgan outran the cornerback and with no time left Morgan at the five yard line dropped
the ball. The Hawks won, they were the champions. In the summer James practiced with his dad
and sometimes with his friends. James loved playing with dad. They would playevery day and
would never miss a game. Their favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys. James was born in Dallas and
lived in Dallas his whole life. His dad always gave him tips and lessons. The Morgan s had always
been having trouble with money. James dream is to play in the NFL and help his parents with

goal. The rest of season was tough, the toughest season yet for James. In the last game they faced
the Hawks again. If they win, they will be in the playoffs and face Alabama. This was James best

Good Night And Good Luck And The Crucible Analysis
What is the main source of power? Well you probably already know the answer because of the
title, but it is fear and lying. Some may disagree but in the end we all have our opinions. Think of
it this way what controls people to do something they don t want to? The answer is fear. If
someone was threatening my family and had them captured, well the best option for me would
have to be to comply with them, because I would be afraid they might hurt my family.
The other source is lying to people. Lie to people and you just might have set fear into them. In
Good Night and Good Luck and The Crucible people who held power were mainly the people that
set the cluster of lies to unravel all the chain of events that made the story the way it was.
In addition to, the first source of power is fear. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam s dead sisters. And that is all. And
mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I
will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will
shudder you . (Abigail Act 1)
Furthermore, the second source for power is dishonesty. Yes, lying with fear does tend to lead to
power. When senator McCarthy lies to the people and tells them they all these certain rules that
explain basically most of the things the people were doing were all meanings of communism. In
The Crucible however lying was the main half rather than fear. The group of girls all made the
decision to lie and act like they were involved with the devil.
In conclusion, Power is a very dangerous thing. I am not saying anyone that has it is evil, but
what I am saying is that listen to the movies and all the quotes that come from great minds. They
all have one similar agreement and that is power in the wrong hands is dangerous. As we have
seen power with senator McCarthy is bad and power with Abigail over the girls also ended up to
being something

Impact Of The Construction Industry On The Uk Economy
Sector introduction:
Balfour Beatty Plc operates in the heavy construction sub sector of the FTSE 250. This sector is
particularly interesting given the effect recession has had on this sector and the ongoing
developments in the industry. The construction sector in the UK is unique as the output in this
sector fell faster than the whole economy in 2008. It has slipped into recession 3 times over the
past 5 years (gov.uk, 2013). Overall the recession has had a dramatic effect in the construction
contracting industry. In recent years the sector has been plagued with low customer confidence,
high unemployment and limited availability of finance. However now that the UK economy is
recovering so is the construction sector, in August 2014 the sector grew at the fastest pace for seven
months since the recession (bbc.co.uk 2014).
Government Initiatives:
Various recent measures have been undertaken by the government which are contributing to the
success of the sector. In 2011 a Localism act was introduced simplifying the planning system which
in turn incentivized growth. A growth and infrastructureact was also implemented which delivered a
further boost to the industry. The government also plans to increase its capital spending plans by
ВЈ3 billion per annum from 2015 16, meaning an additional investment of ВЈ18 billion by 2020
(gov.uk 2013). These schemes have proven successful since their implementation, planning
application approval rates are at a ten year high. Another

What Does Plantinga s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism Say?
Plantinga s argument against naturalism is very engaging. He begins to state that a lot of people
believing Darwin s theory of evolution have misguided beliefs about naturalism. Comprehensively,
he argues that the contingency of humans having stable cognitive faculties is extremely inferior.
Plantinga cites C.S. Lewis in recognizing that evolutionary naturalism leads us to distrust. He
brought up that even Darwin had doubts along those lines. The essence of reasoning in Plantinga s
argument is that the reliability of evolutionary naturalism is very low. He says the people who
believe the two, evolution and naturalism, go hand in hand should reevaluate its soundness; and
hence, withhold approval from all other beliefs including evolutionary naturalism, said to be self
defeating (316). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He notes that nearly all naturalists are also materialists with respect to human beings, because
human beings are materials. A main idea of materialists is that a person is simply their body.

The Role Of Art In The Aztec Art
Art was used by the Aztecs upper class to set them apart from the lower class. They adorned
themselves with feathers, jewelry and fancy clothes. The rich also owned paintings, statues and
music to honor and praise their gods. Most of the lower class, however, could make art but only to
sell to the rich. The Aztecempire had an appreciation and fascination with birds, bugs and
animals. These animals were praised and admired and as a result, they were popular subjects in
the Aztec art. Aztecs believed that their gods took the forms of animals. Paintings of them were
always brightly colored. The Emperor received art as tribute. The Aztecs considered art as a tool
to reinforce their dominance. Jewelry made from copper, jade, obsidian and gold was also
reserved for the Emperor. He had such a variety of clothing and jewelry, it is said that he never
wore the same thing twice. There were rules in the Aztec society that told which rank of people
could wear which type of clothing. For example, only nobles and the Emperor could wear
clothing decorated with feathers, beads and other pretty things. Farmers and other lower class
people could not. If this law was broken, the consequence was death. The Emperor and noble
families also had their bodies pierced so they could wear more jewelry. Statues and brightly
colored paintings would adorn their walls and set them apart from the lower class and maintain
their high class status. Different materials are used to make art such as coral,

Summary Of The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber
From Child to Man: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
Ernest Hemingway was a great American writer and journalist. Hemingway used a number of
different foils to give insight into his characters and foreshadow events to come in his writings.
In Hemingway s short story The Happy Life of Francis Macomber , a number of critics argue
about what exactly he used to tell the story of Francis Macomber growing from a cowardly boy to
a courageous man. One thing we can t argue about is the fact he did such a wonderful job.
Theodore L. Gaillard, Jr. argues in his journal article, The Critical Menagerie of The Short Happy
Life of Francis Macomber , that he believes that Hemingway used an animal menagerie as a
standard against which to measure and evaluate his human actors (Gaillard 31 32). In Gaillard s
journal article. He says the foil Hemingway used in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber
, are the different animals that are mentioned in his short story. Before getting to Africa, Francis
Macomber only had experience in spending money, fishing and hunting small animals (Gaillard
32). Francis is described as a rabbit hare towards the beginning of the story by himself, his wife and
Wilson, the hunter. I bolted like a rabbit Francis says in The Short Happy Life of Francis
Macomber (Hemingway 4). Francis uses the rabbit to describe his cowardice when running from the
lion he supposed to be hunting. More specific than this implicitly negative criticism of Macomber is

Incident Command System Vs Ics
For my Emergency Support Function assignment, I choose to research, and discuss the Incident
Command System ICS and the National Management Incident System NMICS . In this paper I will
compare the similarities, and differences the advantages and disadvantages of each system, as it
pertains to the Emergency ManagementSystem.
The ICS system is a personnel management structure through which disaster response is controlled.
ICS was developed by the State of California as a method by which earthquakes and other
emergencies could be handled efficiently. Flexibility is a main tenet of ICS. When properly
implemented, the system allows the development of a command chain of any size that can include
government agencies and non government organizations alike. Catlin Tidwell University of

How Japan Committed Crimes Against Humanity in Pursuit of...
Japan was one of the major powers of Axis Powers during the World War II. From 1937 to 1945,
Japan started a series of wars, and resulted in millions of casualties along the way. Japanese
battlefield consists of three parts: China, Pacific and Southeastern Asia. Japanese started these wars
because they wanted to gain resources and war advantages for their own country. Japan committed
crimes against humanity during their wars, which means they neglected human dignity and
degraded human value by humiliation. During the Sino Japanese War, the Pearl Harbor Attack and
wars in Southeastern Asia, Japan, in pursuit of self interest, violated human rights and committed
crimes against humanity. Japan s attacking China in 1937 is a crime... Show more content on

Joseph Keenan, the chief prosecutor during the Tokyo Trial after the war, stated that the attack
on Pearl Harbor violated both the war agreement and was a deceitful and treacherous act: But the
attack of Pearl Harbor did not alone result in murder and the slaughter of thousands of human
beings. It did not eventuate only in the destruction of property. It was an outright act of
undermining and destroying the hope of a world for peace. (Keenan 57 58). In addition, the
attack on Pearl Harbor was a crime against humanity since Japan gave American soldiers no time
to organize proper defense, and deprived them of their right to fight for their safety. Japan also
humiliated U.S. soldiers during the attack, which is a violation against human dignity. Japan
attacked the Pearl Harbor to weaken U.S. , as a powerful response to U.S. oil embargo to Japan.
In 1941, Japan and China reached stalemate, and the former was in dire need of resources for a
long war. U.S. and the Western oil sanction did not want Japan to exploit the oil resources in
China and Southeastern Asia, so U.S. set an embargo on oil to restrict Japan. Japan wanted the
resources, but was concerned with U.S. military power, so it decided to strike a sudden attack to
weaken U.S. in order to acquire resources and win the Sino Japanese war. Clearly, Japan attacked
Pearl Harbor to prevent U.S. intervention of Japanese interest, and Japan, desperately wanting U.S.

William Shakespeare s Taming Of The Shrew
Many classic literary works are considered timeless due to the way they tackle the human
condition. These works have stood the test of time and continue to do so because they grapple
with economic and social issues that people of all ages, from all walks of life, can relate to.
Shakespearean plays ideally encompass these viewpoints; they can be tragic, comedic or even
romantic. Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeareexplores the marriagebetween a shrewd
woman, Katherine and a willing suitor, Petruchio. Petruchio challenges himself to try and
transform shrewd ways of Katherine to turn her into the ideal and obedient house wife by using
various techniques, such as denying her company and even food and clothing. The comedic genre
is shown through the clever language and the witty words, revealing an entertaining and light
hearted tone. Classic literary works should always be relatable and to this day, this play is still
engaging people with issues prevalent in modern day society.
During Shakespearean and Elizabethan times, women were not seen as equal and were treated
like property, traded like cattle and sold off with a dowry during marriage. They had to be
subservient to the men in their lives, whether it be towards their father or their husband. The man
was seen as stronger, more able to do everyday tasks and providing for the family, while the
women were to stay at home to raise the kids and clean the house. Despite society s claims of
advancement, women are still

Compare And Contrast Evida And Eva Peron
Both Benedita da Silva and Eva Peron are undeniably incredibly influential women in the Latin
American societies of Brazil and Argentina respectively. Both of these women had very humble
origins, coming from lower class and living in conditions to match. Benedita grew up in a poor
neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, made up almost entirely of Afro Brazilian people, her experience
growing up became integral to her drive towards a career in politics. Eva Peron came to her
position in politics through a significantly different path. Eva in comparison reached a political
position through marriage to the influential Juan Peron, once she achieved fame as an actress. Once
Juan became president of Argentina, Eva immediately began helping the poor and underprivileged...

She used her position of power to put a particular focus on the favelas and the poor people who
lived in them. In comparison, Eva also used her power to focus on the poor of Argentina, this
however is where the two women diverge in their methods. Benedita lacked the same kind of
governmental support and near unchecked power that Eva had, forcing her to go through different
channels such as the media and legal routes to bring change. Eva had the luxury of full government
support, allowing her to on a whim create social programs to directly benefit the needy of her nation.
Eva s programs ranged from directly giving needy people and families homes and money, to being
accredited with giving Argentinian women the right to vote. Arguably Eva s actions had a much
larger immediate impact on the entire nation as a whole when compared to that of Benedita s
achievements. In the long term though, Benedita s contributions to Brazilian society were more
impactful. She managed to break through stereotypes and prejudices and pave the way for other
Afro Brazilians and women to enter politics in Brazil where they had only ever made up a small
margin of the political

The Three Branches Of Congress
The United States government is comprised of three branches; executive, legislative and judicial.
Of these branches it is said that the President, under the executive branch, has the most power.
Congress as part of the legislative branch, however according to the text, American Government
Institutions and Policies by James Wilson, John Dilulio, and Meena Bose, to the Framers of the
Constitution, the bicameral (two chamber) Congress was the first branch. They expected Congress
to wield most of the national government s powers...and [have] the ultimate authority to declare
war (p. 303). However, as we know the commander in chief (the President) has the authority to
declare war, and can be considered as the central figure in American politics . Coincidentally, the
relationship between Congress and the President, expected by the Framers of the Constitution, is
seemingly different than what they originally had in mind. The dynamic of both entities have
shifted over the years; especially in reference to how the legislative branch operates. Most
contemporary Americans and many experts, however, think of Congress not as the first branch but
as the broken branch, unable to address the nation s most pressing domestic, economic, and
international problems in an effective way; unduly responsive to powerful organized special
interests; awash in nonstop campaign fundraising and other activities that many believe border on
political corruption; and unlikely to fix itself through real reforms (p.303). The power and authority

The Approach Of Behavior Modification Within Classrooms
Behavior modification can be defined as a technique which focuses on punishment for behaviors
that are undesirable and rewards for behaviors that are desirable (Langa, 2014). The approach of
behavior modification is based off of the methodologies and findings of a famous psychologist who
researched the area of behaviorism, B.F. Skinner. Skinner, also known as the Father of Behaviorism,
developed the theory of operant conditioning(Langa, 2014). In his research, Skinner used
reinforcements and punishments to support his theory of operant conditioning (Langa, 2014).
Punishments, which Skinner believed could be used to decrease the probability of a certain
behavior happening repeatedly, could be defined as the granting of displeasing stimulants (Langa,
2014). Throughout his research, Skinner found that behaviors that are reinforced, or supported and
acknowledged, were usually repeated whereas behavior which was not reinforced usually weakens
or fades over time. Countless studies have been organized and carried out which have examined the
use of behavior modificationwithin classrooms. In many classrooms, especially early childhood
settings, behavior modifications have been used. Teachers use behavior modification in their
classrooms in order to alter classroom behavior. In order to rework unwanted behaviors into
acceptable behaviors, teachers may use a series of reinforcements or punishments. Some
reinforcements, or positive stimulants, that teachers have

Relationship Between Hinduism And Buddhism
The religious history of India is long and complex. Hinduism was the first known religion to
permeat India and the surrounding area. A couple thousand years later, Buddhism originated as a
reformation of Hinduism rejecting its caste system and deities and began to rearrange the religious
status of India. Today, Eastern Asia is divided between Buddhismand Hinduism. Only Nepal
employs both religions, considering them inextricably linked. The history and current situation of
the relationship between Hinduism and Buddhism begs the question: Can Buddhism exist in a
Hindu society in a way that fulfills each religion? Huston Smith s The World s Religions and the
Buddhist Scriptures each contribute to this controversial conversation. Despite strong arguments
for the conjunction of the two religions and the similarities they share, the philosophical and
categorical difference between the two demonstrates a tension better than it does a cohesion.
Since Buddhism arose from Hinduism, they share many values and goals. One mutual goal of the
two religions is the concept of Nirvana or moksha. Since each religion places this sort of
enlightenment as the paramount objective of its congregations, the efforts to reach it would be
doubled and individuals would be more inclined to and more capable of reaching enlightenment.
Some other features that Hinduism and Buddhism have in common include the significance of
karma and dharma. In each practice, improving one s karma is one of the goals of

Although today s social life is so different than the past, people are getting harder to focus on pure

Love, romance, and comedies have always been a success in whether it be books or movies. These

zombie life is, R s experience of love, and the war between the living and the undead. Three years
after publishing the book, Jonathan Levine created the movie adaptation. Zombies, at the time of

filmmakers interpreted the book s agents into more teen relatable characters to make the movie
relatable and more of a success. Originally the book suggests R s character as a business type
man. Marion described him as wearing black dress pants, gray button up, and a tie which gives
him more of a mid to late twenties age range(Rawden). In the book, R has children and a
marriage which would also cause for little to no interest in younger audiences since most
teenagers and young adults cannot relate to this. This However, the film depicts him more of a
teen or early twenties by wearing ripped jeans, simple white tee, sneakers, and a red hoodie. This
change in the character s physical appearance would cause for the younger movie audiences to
relate more, connect more, and ultimately causing them to have more interest in the movie. The
filmmakers of the movie also chose to pick very young looking actors to emphasize this teen
romance theme in the movie. In contrast, they chose R s best friend, an older looking actor, to
contrast these film s young leading stars. If

The Man Behind Alice. The Victorian Era
The Man Behind Alice The Victorian Era is known for many things. Within the time frame of
Queen Victoria s reign, there were major events such as Ireland s potato famine, the Crimean
War, as well as the industrial revolution. In the literary world, however, the era sprouted many of
the world s famous Victorian based novels that are still being read today. Alice s Adventures in
Wonderland is well known by most people for its vivid use of the imagination. The story itself is
one that promotes creativity, open mindedness and viewing the world in different perspectives.
While Lewis Carroll s story captivates and inspires people of all ages, what brings a young girl s
adventure to life are the illustrations behind it. The story of Alice is nothing without the visual aid
of the original illustrator, Sir John Tenniel. While there are some Alice lovers that do not know who
John Tenniel is, those that do, understand how important Tenniel was in creating the Victorian
novel as well as its sequel. The question that now stands because of this is, how involved was John
Tenniel to the Alice novels? While the world best knows Alice s Adventures in Wonderland best
due to the words of Lewis Carroll, it is nothing without the visual representations and influences by
Sir John Tenniel.
Tenniel s beginnings start when he was born in London in the year 1820. In his youth, he has done
a great many things, including attending the British Royal Academy to learn his craft. These ways

Exploring the Skeletal System Essay
Exploring the Skeletal System
The precise number of bones in the adult human skeleton varies from one person to another, but
on average there are 206 bones varying shapes and sizes. The skeleton is divided into two main
parts. The central bones of the skull, ribs, spin (vertebral column) and breast bone (sternum) form
the axial skeleton. The bones of the arms and legs, along with the shoulder blade (scapula), collar
bone (clavicle) and pelvis make up the appendicular skeleton.
The cylindrical, linked vertebrae of the spinal column offer strong, bony protection for the spinal
cord. Aided by muscles and ligaments, the vertebrae support the skull and hols the body upright.
The spin has a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ribcage
A bony cage within the chest shields the heart, lungs and other organs. There are 12 pairs of ribs,
all attached to the spine. The upper seven pairs of true ribs link directly to the sternum by costal
cartilage. The next two to three pairs of false ribs attach indirectly to the sternum by means of the
cartilage linked to the ribs above; the remaining floating ribs have no links to the sternum. (the
lowest ribs are hidden by the liver and stomach).
Pelvic bones
The pelvis varies in shape according to sex. Overall, the structure has a similar appearance in
both sexes but takes a shallower and wider form in females to allow for the specialised function of
childbearing. Arranged in a ring, the fused pelvic bones provide a strong foundation for the upper
body and protection for parts of the reproductive systems.
Bones of the skull
Two separate sets of bones from the intricate structure of the skull. The eight bones enclosing and
protecting the brain are called the cranial vault. Another 14 bones make up the skeleton of the
face. In adults, all of the lower jaw, (mandible) are locked together by joints known as sutures.
Theses seams are visible on the surface of the skull as lines between the bones.
Viewed from the front, the most prominent skull bones are the

Everyone Should Go Back To College
Everyone has busy lives especially those that daily, are juggling more than one task. Nowhere is
this more apparent than in the life of a college professional, or someone who attends a job while
going to college. Many struggle going to long work weeks to be able to afford their bills while
they also going to school for hope of a better future. This is something relatable to a great deal of
young Americans, and something that is becoming more common place in our older generations
that later in life are choosing to advance their education. Between the exams, essays, late nights
and long days how does one have time to forgo all these proceedings while simultaneously
maintaining a social life? As impossible as it may sound it is achievable with the right tools,
mindset and dedication. I am personally a part time student that normally attends three classes a

People should look to their peers, family, professors and advisors for the tools to be able to
surmount such a task. There are many options available for those who wish to go back to school

provided and to take every opportunity to be able to better ourselves. If we look to the past to
see how others have achieved their goals, we can learn to be able to accomplish such affairs
ourselves. With a little hard work a seemingly impossible task starts to become realistic with the
outlook of a better future. I consider going to school is important but shouldn t come with the

Developmental Math Syllabus
Essay 1
I teach developmental mathematics courses for struggling math students at the Community
College of Philadelphia. For many students, this is where the community college experience
begins in a remedial arithmetic or algebra class, reviewing mathematics concepts they learned, or
should have learned, before they graduated from high school. As I reviewed the course syllabus
and class requirements on the first day of a new semester, Scott, an older male student shouted
out a barrage of questions: What do we need this for? Can we take tests over? How many classes
can we miss? His tone was hostile, and all eyes were fixed on me and my reaction.

I teach in a computer lab and incorporate technology in the classroom. I use a supplemental online
program by Pearson Education, Math Lab Plus (MLP), to reinforce the material. The program has
an online discussion component. To foster a sense of community in the classroom, the first
assignment I post is for students to write a brief bio about themselves, including their goals and
aspirations for taking the course. I respond to each entry to make sure students know they are seen
and heard and that I care about their success. As part of their participation grade, students are
required to respond to two other students in the course. This helps them recognize they are part of a
community of learners and not just another student lost in the crowd. Students are placed in
cooperative learning groups where they work with a partner to improve their understanding of
different math concepts.
Additionally, I use a toolbox of leadership strategies that are implemented throughout the semester
including: reflective practice, naming and reframing the questions that arise and analyze the results,
integrating theory into practice. Carl Buehner said, They may forget what you said, but they will
never forget how you made them feel.

Theme Of Death In The Giver
The Journey Have you ever wondered where you will go when you die? The School by Donald
Barthelme and The Giver by Louis Lowry explore death as a common theme throughout the short
story and the novel. The School is a short story told from the perspective of a teacher at what
seems to be an elementary or middle school. The story, consisting of a mere 1200 words, follows
the numerous tragedies the school faces over roughly a month long timespan. The Giveris a novel
about a dystopian society and is told from the perspective of a young boy named Jonas. The story
follows Jonas journey in becoming the Receiver of Memory at age twelve, which is the normal
age to be assigned a career in this society, and how he learns the truth about the world that he lives
in. In The School, death is a very obvious theme. Barthelme uses death as the central theme and
portrays it in a very humorous way. Whereas in The Giver, death, in terms of it being a theme, is
very subtle and serious. This is shown in numerous ways throughout each story. Though death is
treated differently in both The Giver and The School, and the message behind each work is
different, the dystopian aspect connects the stories by exemplifying the lack of emotion and
dehumanization of the characters in each story. In The School, death is the central theme of the
story and is treated as something light and humorous, with the exception of a couple tone switches
throughout the story. Barthelme uses escalation and a perpetually

The Genius Of Fitzgerald By F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Genius of Fitzgerald In order to spot a literary genius, it is necessary for one to first define
the word literary genius. What makes a literary genius? Though a broad term that can be applied to
many situations, a literary genius can best be described as an author who has a timeless impact on
literature with themes that resonate with every kind of person. F. Scott Fitzgerald, along with several
others, is the epitome of a literary genius. Fitzgerald s works like This Side of Paradise and Tender
is the Night are both great stories and, in a deeper and more analytical context, works that reflect
the reality of the world. The world isn t in the most ideal state, and Fitzgerald knows that. From
describing the lonesome life of wealth and riches to examining how people feel about romance,
Fitzgerald s works will always be applicable to life.
In This Side of Paradise, the main character, Amory Blaine, is essentially on a quest to find values
that suit him. Throughout every aspect of life, Blaine is found repeatedly trying and failing
different methods of living. Blaine was raised in a very unconventional environment. Due to this,
Blaine is seen trying to counter this upbringing by acting in a conventional manner. This is first
observed when Blaine comes back to Beatrice after a 2 year separation. No, Beatrice. I enjoyed
them. I adapted myself to the bourgeoisie. I became conventional. (Paradise ?). With that in

Civil Aspects Of The Indigenous Communities
The Indigenous people throughout Mexico have had a tumultuous history filled with violence and
repression. Their rich cultures have repeatedly been infringed upon by outside cultures, and their
place in the world remains uncertain to this day. This battle to retain their culture began centuries
ago, and envelopes all different types of Indigenous groups, from the old Aztecs to the Zapotecs.
Their society was and remains to be very different from popular culturein Mexico and Spain during
the times of the Conquistadores, and they have therefore been subjected to different
persecutions and maltreatments throughout history. The Indigenous people have had their own
customs and social laws since their inception. These customs are very different than popular
Mexican society, and therefore are the targets of criticism and persecution at the hands of the
Mexican government. One of the most defining civil aspects of the Indigenous communities is
the concept of communal land. The land was owned by the community as a whole, known as
Ejido land, and households were given land to work and live on in exchange for their agreement to
follow the social aspects of the society. The system was a complex and effective web of public held
positions for every aspect of civil society from police to mayordomos, or the people who tended to
the saints for a year. It was a kind of social obligation, and composed of both a civil and religious
hierarchy. This system was an effective way to maintain

Feeling overwhelmed and burdened by her decision, Keith was pushed aside as his mother chose a

This survey included over 3,700 physicians in eight different countries. The results showed
Canada continuously had the lowest overall adaption rate; early adaption of technologies is a key
element to sustaining healthcare systems (Williams). Canada is a slow adapter of innovative

quality of life of Canadians (Daniel Muzyka). There is plenty of evidence to validate that many
Canadians are incorrect in believing that they have the best healthcare system in the world .
Spending on healthcare in Canada continues to outpace the government spending program in
growth and is limiting public investments in other areas that would make for an overall more

$2,600 per Canadian per year. Recent studies by Brett Skinner have looked at trends in the annual
growth rates for provincial healthcare expenditures and total government revenue. He found that if
recent trends persist, provincial government spending on healthcare will consume more than half
of total revenues from all sources in six of 10 provinces by the year 2020 (Neil Stuart). Due to the
over spending factor and tight budgets, several healthcare institutions in Canada are cutting back

The Epidemic Of Disease On The Continent Of Africa
The topic of disease on the continent of Africa has been discussed in increasing frequency over
the past three decades. Ideas regarding disease tend to center around the idea that disease can be
eliminated by a one step cure. This viewpoint is flawed because it excludes other factors
influencing disease. In this paper, I will argue that there are many factors that influence the
presence of disease on a continent. More specifically, I will be focusing on Human African
Trypanosomiasis(HAT) in the countries of Kenya, Uganda, and the Congo. To do this, I will explore
publications focused on how the history of disease, colonialism, the environment, social

The symptoms of HAT in the beginning tend to be milder, consisting of nausea and fever. The
disease is commonly referred to as sleeping sickness . It obtained this name from people
observing individuals in a certain stage of the disease. There are two main stages of HAT
caused by two different geniuses of tsetse flies. These two stages both have hemolymphatic and
acute disease stages. However, one of the two forms an acute stage that is drastically more severe
than the other. In this drastically different acute stage, the infected individual becomes almost
zombie like and can experience psychotic episodes that occasionally involve violence. These
episodes of an individual experiencing the acute stage gave the disease the nickname of sleeping
sickness . Some cultures have deemed the disease as a result of demonic spirits and thus those
infected can often be ignored because people are afraid of interacting with a bad spirit.
Human African Trypanosomiasis was first discovered on the continent of Africa in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. The initial outbreak of HAT killed approximately half of a million
people in the countries of Congo, Uganda, and Kenya. Shortly after this initial outbreak, a
treatment for HAT was developed. The drug was penned Suramin and is still used for treatment of
the disease today. Shortly after this drug was developed, a second drug known today as

The Stranger Essay
The Stranger
The Stranger exhibits a society that has confined itself with a specific set of social standards that
dictate the manner in which people are supposed to act. This ideology determines the level of
morality, and how much emphasis should placed on following this certain ethical structure. Albert
Camus s main character, Meursault, is depicted as a nonconformist that is unwilling to play society
s game. Through Meursault s failure to comply with society s values and conform to the norm, he
is rejected and also condemned to death by society. He is tried for the crime of murder, but is not

Meursault s character is the determining factor in his conviction and sentencing. His social
rebellion is deemed immoral and abominable.
The reader and the novel s characters both try to rationalize
Meursault s actions in order to give his life meaning. But according to Meursault, life is
meaningless and consequently needs no justification. The day after his mother s death, this man
was out swimming, starting up a dubious liaison, and going to the movies, a comedy, for laughs.
The prosecutor uses Meursault s previous unusual actions as evidence that he is a threat to society.
His actions are deemed monstrous by the jury and subsequently end in Meursault s conviction.
Society uses the past in order to justify the present. It is incorrect for one to assert that Meursault
has no emotion or incapable of emotion; it is simply that he fails to exhibit it for he feels it is
meaningless. Meursault contradicts society s expectations.
He does not indicate any signs of grief at the funeral and is therefore labeled a monster, thereby
threatening the level of morality that has been instilled into the other members of society.
Meursault s ideology concerning life has led him to deny the idea of a god or of an afterlife.
Meursault s ideas threaten the ideas passed down by the Catholic Church in the Algerian society.

Kohlberg s Moral Development Theory
Whenever Billy or his girlfriend ask Ashley to do her chores such as cleaning her room or

point of view that, she looks for her benefit or reward put her in Stage 2 of level 1(Pre

Moral Development is based on the reasoning. Pre conventional level is based on the physical

Light Absorption Research Paper
Light is said to be the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that all people can see. Many
people call this portion visible light, and know that visible light has a range of many colors. These
main colors are usually said to be red, orange, blue, indigo, violet, yellow, and green. The colors of
different objects are determined by the interaction between lightand the electrons of the atoms that
make up an object. The object is made up of specific wavelengths of white light unique to the
object, and it absorbs the light according to its wavelengths. Molecules have many states, two of
these states, are states where the electron is excited and neutral when it is originally found.
Molecules and atoms can only absorb light when the energy of a photonmatches the energy
difference between these two states.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The color wheel relates the wavelengths of transmitted light to absorbed light. Objects absorb
different amounts of white light, which is what makes an object have its unique color. The white
light is what in turn makes color. While there were many theories throughout history on light, the
first theories about light were created by the Ancient Greeks. These theories tried to describe
light as a ray which moved directionally to a point. Pythagoras was best known for his theorem of
the right triangle that was made up of the assumption that vision was made from light rays that
came out of a person s eye and hit an object. This is true in many senses. In reflection, when light
hits a smooth surface, it hits then bounces off. A reflected ray always comes off the surface of a
material at an angle equal to the angle at which the incoming ray hit the surface. However, when
light bounces off a rough surface, light reflects at numerous angles

enormous human capital: they encourage exchange of ideas and intellectual opportunities. Cities
are conceived upon diversity encountering individuals with different believes and points of view,
coming from very different backgrounds one has a chance to test his own convictions against those
of others. Cities therefore are constantly evolving subjects, where one continues to learn every
minute; they also become arenas for political action and organization. In my essay I am going to
discuss how through close spatial proximity and interrelation of different socio economic groups
important political questions are being raised.
With examples from different world regions, such as India, US and Brazil it is possible to distill a
trend that urban setting through compact spatial organization provides exposure to various
viewpoints and encourages its dwellers to take action, to attempt to solve infrastructural problems
and organize in political groups. It is both in the city center and the periphery where people become
involved into performative politics. I would argue, that physical proximity and socio economic
difference present simultaneously in one space no matter whether in the center or in periphery
foster one s involvement in

Analysis of Dynacorp Case Essay
Analysis of the Dynacorp Case
The political lens looks at an organization from the perspective of how power and influence are
distributed and wielded, how multiple stakeholders express their different preferences and get
involved in or excluded from decisions, and how conflicts can be resolved (Ancona, Kochan,
Scully, Van Maanen and Westney В
– M2 10) . It is an arena for competition and conflict among
individuals, groups and other organizations whose interests and goals differ dramatically. The roots
of conflict lie in different and competing interests and disagreements require political action,
including negotiation, coalition building and the exercise of power and influence. The steps in using
the political lens for an effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Middle managers, especially the branch managers, like Martha Pauly and product managers in
Business Units pay more attention to the changed performance measurement system than focusing
on the customer teams and making sure they are being more responsive to customer needs. Martha
Pauly seems very confused and inattentive to what s happening in her branch and sales team.
While talking about the change in organization, says that, It involves the knowledge of the
industry and the company, the full line of products, our various software, applications and
concepts of system integration. Exactly who handles all the pieces of sale like this is still unclear
(Dynacorp revisited, 1999: M2 88 89)
The team members are still operating under the old attitude, that the equipment, sells itself and that
the customer will do all the integration of the products into their operations. The notion of helping
the customers from initial call through implementation and use of the system is still quite unknown
to many of them. Customers are more particular about the service/product, and looking for
complete system solutions, more customized software, and more value added services.
In the course of this change, senior managers wish the whole organization can fit with the changed
situation and the operation of the new reorganized structure can be more smooth and efficient. But
also through this change, the middle managers, especially branch managers and

When one thinks of an Ohio State University student, they might first think of an Ohio resident, or
maybe someone from another Midwestern state such as Michigan, Illinois, or Indiana. The
student that comes to mind is most likely a white, 18 22 year old athlete who is a part of Greek
life. However, one of their recent recruiting videos appeals to students who do not fit these
demographics. This video can be found on Ohio State Universitys Youtube page, titled Ohio State
National TV Commercial. It is unique because it attempts to appeal to students who may not
consider OSU, such as international or non traditional students, or perhaps students of color. The
video begins with a quick shot of about ten to fifteen students, each... Show more content on

An aerial shot of the Ohio State football stadium comes on screen with a dark green color scheme
similar to the one in the previous scene, but slightly lighter to suggest that it is now early
morning. The camera cuts to a few shots of people, mostly men of various races, in crew uniforms
working on a white race car with the Ohio State logo on the hood. The man in the voice over says,
...with a team that shared diverse ideas and expertise.
An aerial shot of birds flying over Kampala, Uganda comes onto the screen. The man is now
wearing a nice suit and speaks confidently to a conference room full of people about a bright
yellow smart car model on the screen next to him. There is a shot of his hands working on a
small car part in an office. The man says, Now, I m home building more sustainable vehicles and a
new industry for my country. Then, the man looks out a large, clear glass window. His name,
Dennis Kibalama, pops up onto the screen next to him in a white, bolded, professional font. Below
his name the screen says, Engineer. Environmentalist. Driving Economic Growth. The man turns
and walks away as the screen closes out into a white screen featuring the Ohio State logo.
This video comes from the official Ohio State University Youtube page and was published on
August 17, 2017, so it can be safely assumed that it came directly from Ohio State itself. Ohio State
University is quite largely known for their football team and also

Social Roles in Society Essay
Social Roles in Society
Social psychology, as defined by the Microsoft Bookshelf, is the branch of human psychology
that deals with the behavior of groups and the influence of social factors on the individual. Social
roles are one of the many sub categories of social psychology. I believe social roles to be the way
we, as individuals, act in certain situations; such as home life, educational and economic statue,
peer groups, etc. The Prison Simulation by Haney, Banks Zimbardo is just one of the vast studies
in this area. In this study we will see how people take roles in life, and in simulated life situations.
Social roles are not fictitious, it is in fact a very real occurrence that many people deal with ever
day, whether it be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I noticed that the inmates that were sentenced to life acted out much more than the inmates that
were only sentenced for a few years. At the time I took no great thought into this, but after reading
this study I have recalled the prison tour in my mind to critically analyze why this would be. I have
come to the conclusion that the life sentenced prisoners have nothing to lose by acting irrational
and making spontaneous decisions. On the other hand, the inmates with the shorter sentences have
something to look forward to when getting out. They do not necessarily need to act out to obtain
attention, that is not what they are looking for.
While looking on the Internet for yet another social role study, I came upon an old friend that
also happened to be online. I decided to discuss his situation rather than one of which does not
effect me as personally as this. My friend was and I guess still is a victim of alcoholism. My
friend Matt is now out of the house and on his own and his parents are now divorced. Matt and I
grew up together, so many of his pains I felt as well. While he was growing up his father was
quite a heavy drinker and at many times became violent as well as abusive towards Matt, his two
younger siblings and his mother. I can remember at times Matt telling me how his father the night
before would hit him. Matt would tell me better it be me then my mother or

Character Analysis Of Janie Crawford
Janie Crawford, an independent women living in the early twentieth century is on a quest for
fulfillment which she believe can be found in true love. As she tells her story to her friend Pheoby
Watson, we learn that instead of finding love she finds everything but love. After running away
with Jody Starks, a handsome educated man, Janie begins to see how human nature can turn your
once loving husband into a power seeking monster. Through the buying of land, the complete
control over a town s workings, and eventually the control of Janie it becomes evident that the only
thing Jody Starks wants in life is control.
When first arriving in the small town of Eatonville, Starks was surprised that there was no mayor,
street lights, or even a store ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Janie soon realizes that her job is too simply to be pretty and not have a voice in simple
conversation or decisions in the marriage. Her opinions would become rare and no matter what
Jody did, she [would say] nothing. Her one purpose in life as Jody saw it was to be a stepping
stool in his image as a leader. Only after did she stand up for herself did he show his true
character to her which lead to him [striking] Janie with all his might. This resistance between the
characters deep shows how Judy let his crave for power effect his life. He probably never loved
Janie rather he saw her as an object. This reflects how the society of that time saw women. They
were items that greater empowered the man they married. The marriage comes to a bitter end as
Janie learns that being by herself in the world is not so bad.
Overall the search and craving for power can send even the humblest man to extreme hostility.
He was not afraid to do whatever it takes to get the high pedestal in life. He controlled other
people s lives and property to feel secure in himself. This lead to the power crazed man that Janie
ended up marring. He revealed himself to not be the love of Janie s life rather a man who abused
her beauty to gain power. His power hungry and boastful nature impacted the main character in a
way that built he into the stronger person she needed to

The Sport Of Football ( Soccer )
Ronaldinho once said I learned all about life with a ball at my feet. I honestly never knew what
Ronaldinho meant by this since I first heard about the quote. Every time I played soccer or
touched a ball, I tried figuring out what he truly meant. I would ask my mom, my uncles, my
brother, my cousins, and my friends if they knew what it meant but few of them simply didn t
care or didn t even care. I was so eager to find out what he truly meant. When I was 8, in 3rd grade,
I started playing the famous sport of football(soccer). Not only did I suck but I was awful at the
sport! There were certain rules I didn t know, that now I think of as the most obvious rules for the
sport. For example, I didn t understand the proper call for a foul.... Show more content on

He helped me to cool down. I remember he was one of bullies father. A very wise and honest
man. He told me Don t listen to him kid. He doesn t know what soccer truly is about. Life is the
same exact thing as this sport. There are ups and downs, and there are moments where you feel
no good, but that shouldn t stop you from quitting on your goal. I remember these words clearly
as if they were told to me yesterday and I will never forget them. I got up and with a new
determined mindset, I gave him his thanks and left home. I never returned to the team after that
day, but yet missed the wide man who helped me for some reason. This team made me realize the
emotions of despair, misery, and dejection. I took the wide man s words into consideration, and
realized that he s right. Life will bring me ups and downs just like soccer will.
Due to the way I was made fun of by the others, I quit playing for almost 3 years. In 6th grade I
started playing soccer again, age 11. It happened after school, when I had to stay because my
mom was going to pick me up late, due to work. There were some fellow schoolmates at the field
playing soccer, and out of nowhere I finally gained the eagerness to play again and touch the ball of
my life. At first I still seemed to suck, but after a while I finally got the hang of it! I don t know
how, when, or what made me finally get the hang of it, but in my opinion, I did pretty great

Analysis Of Fridman s Essay Nerds
Good and evil. Heroes and villains. Reality and unreality. Possible and impossible. Ethereal and
the general commonplace. Nerds and ... who knows? A term such as nerd can only take a
person so far into the fact of being close minded. Nobody reserves the absolute right to even call
a nerd a legitimate nerd solely because the derogatory term is quite offensive to certain people,
and the people who are actual nerds tend to be the brighter faction of society. In this case,
Fridman argues that a nerd is valuable in the sense that those distinct people will be the future and
that those people will determine what lies next for the betterment of society. Nerds and geeks are
explicitly used in the article of America Needs Its Nerds but not in the way that nerds are the worst
possible beings in the universe. Rather, nerds are used by Fridman to... Show more content on

Fridman begins by elaborating that there are few words to characterize an intellectual such as the
vilifying, derogatory terms like nerd and geek and also compares that a nerd is most likely a street
performer who shocks the public by biting off heads of live chickens, (1 2). Fridman, at the
beginning of the article, acknowledges intellectuals as people who have no value, or at the very
least, he showcases how U.S. society and culture increasingly portray the intellectual as a person
who is worthless. Fridman conveys Webster s New World Dictionary opinion, in which in turn is a
respected source, on what it feels about smart people to demonstrate that not only are the the
intellectuals downsized by the general public but are retained to the equivalent of a savage who has
no sense at all. Fridman is clear in how he presents his argument, the introduction being that there is
something very wrong with society and that society assumes surreal definitions of someone
dedicated to [the] pursuit of knowledge,

Explain the influences of two predictable and two unpredictable major life events on the
development of an individual
In this part of my assignment I will be looking at how both predictable and unpredictable major life
events can have an effect on a person s development.
Predictable A child starting school
*I spoke to a person who found the transition from Primary to Secondary school very difficult*
Physically Due to the difficulty she found adjusting to the new school, she began to eat less and
less, started making herself sick and began to suffer from panic attacks. These things didn t help
the stress of changing schools because she felt ill and weak and couldn t function while trying to
complete simple tasks.

Unpredictable Serious Injury
*I spoke to someone who damaged their knee*
Physical Whilst playing netball, this girl fell over, this was because he knee had dislocated.
Before this happened she would play any sport she could and was very active. The damage to her
knee meant she had to have a lot of operations to attempt to fix the problem. This is an on going
problem, she has difficulty walking and cannot use stairs, and because she cannot do much exercise
she has gained a lot of weight.
Intellectual As this problem had and still does affect her mobility she had to leave college as it
was on two different campuses. This meant she didn t get the qualifications she was expected to
leave with. This has contributed to the fact she cannot find work because she hasn t got the basic
skills others have who had finished their course at college. As she spent a lot of time at home she
took up doing art, which she had never really tried before, and now some of her designs are being
used in tattoo parlours, and she hopes to one day, train to be a tattoo artist.
Emotional unfortunately she began to develop a low confidence because of her weight gain, she
started to feel depressed because of all the time she had to spend at the hospital, for operations,
check ups

  • 2. Family Religious History Lixin Guo PHIL 110 ADF Family Religious History I grew up with my maternal grandparents in China. From an early age, I was taught the notion of filial piety, paying respect to elderly members while making concessions to the younger members. It plays a central role in my family as well as the families in which my grandparents came from. My grandmother is born in a scholarly family heavily influenced by teachings of Confucianism. Strict rules apply to how children should behave to show respect to adults. For instance, children are not allowed to eat before adults begin eating, which exemplifies the belief that parents are authoritative over children. Unlike her parents, my grandmother is not keen on being an authoritative figure. She believes that a mutually respectful relationship with everyone regardless of age is the key to a harmonious family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have adopted a secular view on traditions. Rather than accepting filial piety as an obligation, I see it as a guide to the moral conducts. Making sacrifices means more of a duty to preserve my cultural identity than a religious experience. My grandfather, on the other hand, is from a poor, rural family. Although his family did not enforce a harsh discipline which is derived from the notion of filial piety, he is the most pious devotee to traditional practices in my family and sees filial piety as an obligation. It is his way of showing reverence to his mother, who changed his course of life. Despite the meager income, my great grandmother insisted on him to complete his college education so that he could find work that allows him to escape poverty. He feels heavily indebted to ... They went for the field goal and got it. The scorewas 27 24 and the Texas Rams were ready to receive to it. On the return they ran for twenty yards. With only five seconds left the quarterback, John Halen, threw the ball to James Morgan. Morgan outran the cornerback and with no time left Morgan at the five yard line dropped the ball. The Hawks won, they were the champions. In the summer James practiced with his dad and sometimes with his friends. James loved playing with dad. They would playevery day and would never miss a game. Their favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys. James was born in Dallas and lived in Dallas his whole life. His dad always gave him tips and lessons. The Morgan s had always been having trouble with money. James dream is to play in the NFL and help his parents with money issues. Summer flew by and college was starting soon. • 4. Good Night And Good Luck And The Crucible Analysis What is the main source of power? Well you probably already know the answer because of the title, but it is fear and lying. Some may disagree but in the end we all have our opinions. Think of it this way what controls people to do something they don t want to? The answer is fear. If someone was threatening my family and had them captured, well the best option for me would have to be to comply with them, because I would be afraid they might hurt my family. The other source is lying to people. Lie to people and you just might have set fear into them. In Good Night and Good Luck and The Crucible people who held power were mainly the people that set the cluster of lies to unravel all the chain of events that made the story the way it was. (Abigail Act 1) Furthermore, the second source for power is dishonesty. Yes, lying with fear does tend to lead to power. When senator McCarthy lies to the people and tells them they all these certain rules that explain basically most of the things the people were doing were all meanings of communism. In The Crucible however lying was the main half rather than fear. The group of girls all made the decision to lie and act like they were involved with the devil. In conclusion, Power is a very dangerous thing. I am not saying anyone that has it is evil, but what I am saying is that listen to the movies and all the quotes that come from great minds. They all have one similar agreement and that is power in the wrong hands is dangerous. • 5. Impact Of The Construction Industry On The Uk Economy Sector introduction: Balfour Beatty Plc operates in the heavy construction sub sector of the FTSE 250. This sector is particularly interesting given the effect recession has had on this sector and the ongoing developments in the industry. The construction sector in the UK is unique as the output in this sector fell faster than the whole economy in 2008. It has slipped into recession 3 times over the past 5 years (gov.uk, 2013). Overall the recession has had a dramatic effect in the construction contracting industry. In recent years the sector has been plagued with low customer confidence, high unemployment and limited availability of finance. However now that the UK economy is recovering so is the construction sector, in August 2014 the sector grew at the fastest pace for seven months since the recession (bbc.co.uk 2014). Government Initiatives: Various recent measures have been undertaken by the government which are contributing to the success of the sector. In 2011 a Localism act was introduced simplifying the planning system which in turn incentivized growth. A growth and infrastructureact was also implemented which delivered a further boost to the industry. The government also plans to increase its capital spending plans by ВЈ3 billion per annum from 2015 16, meaning an additional investment of ВЈ18 billion by 2020 (gov.uk 2013). Plantinga s argument against naturalism is very engaging. He begins to state that a lot of people believing Darwin s theory of evolution have misguided beliefs about naturalism. Comprehensively, he argues that the contingency of humans having stable cognitive faculties is extremely inferior. Plantinga cites C.S. Lewis in recognizing that evolutionary naturalism leads us to distrust. He brought up that even Darwin had doubts along those lines. The essence of reasoning in Plantinga s argument is that the reliability of evolutionary naturalism is very low. He says the people who believe the two, evolution and naturalism, go hand in hand should reevaluate its soundness; and hence, withhold approval from all other beliefs including evolutionary naturalism, said to be self defeating (316). ... There were rules in the Aztec society that told which rank of people could wear which type of clothing. For example, only nobles and the Emperor could wear clothing decorated with feathers, beads and other pretty things. Farmers and other lower class people could not. If this law was broken, the consequence was death. The Emperor and noble families also had their bodies pierced so they could wear more jewelry. • 8. Summary Of The Short Happy Life Of Francis Macomber From Child to Man: The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber Ernest Hemingway was a great American writer and journalist. Hemingway used a number of different foils to give insight into his characters and foreshadow events to come in his writings. In Hemingway s short story The Happy Life of Francis Macomber , a number of critics argue about what exactly he used to tell the story of Francis Macomber growing from a cowardly boy to a courageous man. One thing we can t argue about is the fact he did such a wonderful job. Theodore L. Gaillard, Jr. argues in his journal article, The Critical Menagerie of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , that he believes that Hemingway used an animal menagerie as a standard against which to measure and evaluate his human actors (Gaillard 31 32). In Gaillard s journal article. He says the foil Hemingway used in The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , are the different animals that are mentioned in his short story. Before getting to Africa, Francis Macomber only had experience in spending money, fishing and hunting small animals (Gaillard 32). Francis is described as a rabbit hare towards the beginning of the story by himself, his wife and Wilson, the hunter. It did not eventuate only in the destruction of property. It was an outright act of undermining and destroying the hope of a world for peace. (Keenan 57 58). In addition, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a crime against humanity since Japan gave American soldiers no time to organize proper defense, and deprived them of their right to fight for their safety. Japan also humiliated U.S. soldiers during the attack, which is a violation against human dignity. Japan attacked the Pearl Harbor to weaken U.S. , as a powerful response to U.S. oil embargo to Japan. These works have stood the test of time and continue to do so because they grapple with economic and social issues that people of all ages, from all walks of life, can relate to. Shakespearean plays ideally encompass these viewpoints; they can be tragic, comedic or even romantic. Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeareexplores the marriagebetween a shrewd woman, Katherine and a willing suitor, Petruchio. Petruchio challenges himself to try and transform shrewd ways of Katherine to turn her into the ideal and obedient house wife by using various techniques, such as denying her company and even food and clothing. The comedic genre is shown through the clever language and the witty words, revealing an entertaining and light hearted tone. Classic literary works should always be relatable and to this day, this play is still engaging people with issues prevalent in modern day society. During Shakespearean and Elizabethan times, women were not seen as equal and were treated like property, traded like cattle and sold off with a dowry during marriage. Of these branches it is said that the President, under the executive branch, has the most power. Congress as part of the legislative branch, however according to the text, American Government Institutions and Policies by James Wilson, John Dilulio, and Meena Bose, to the Framers of the Constitution, the bicameral (two chamber) Congress was the first branch. They expected Congress to wield most of the national government s powers...and [have] the ultimate authority to declare war (p. 303). However, as we know the commander in chief (the President) has the authority to declare war, and can be considered as the central figure in American politics . Coincidentally, the relationship between Congress and the President, expected by the Framers of the Constitution, is seemingly different than what they originally had in mind. The dynamic of both entities have shifted over the years; especially in reference to how the legislative branch operates. Most contemporary Americans and many experts, however, think of Congress not as the first branch but as the broken branch, unable to address the nation s most pressing domestic, economic, and international problems in an effective way; unduly responsive to powerful organized special interests; awash in nonstop campaign fundraising and other activities that many believe border on political corruption; and unlikely to fix itself through real reforms (p.303). The Approach Of Behavior Modification Within Classrooms Behavior modification can be defined as a technique which focuses on punishment for behaviors that are undesirable and rewards for behaviors that are desirable (Langa, 2014). The approach of behavior modification is based off of the methodologies and findings of a famous psychologist who researched the area of behaviorism, B.F. Skinner. Skinner, also known as the Father of Behaviorism, developed the theory of operant conditioning(Langa, 2014). In his research, Skinner used reinforcements and punishments to support his theory of operant conditioning (Langa, 2014). Punishments, which Skinner believed could be used to decrease the probability of a certain behavior happening repeatedly, could be defined as the granting of displeasing stimulants (Langa, 2014). Throughout his research, Skinner found that behaviors that are reinforced, or supported and acknowledged, were usually repeated whereas behavior which was not reinforced usually weakens or fades over time. Countless studies have been organized and carried out which have examined the use of behavior modificationwithin classrooms. In many classrooms, especially early childhood settings, behavior modifications have been used. Teachers use behavior modification in their classrooms in order to alter classroom behavior. In order to rework unwanted behaviors into acceptable behaviors, teachers may use a series of reinforcements or punishments. Some reinforcements, or positive stimulants, that teachers have ... A couple thousand years later, Buddhism originated as a reformation of Hinduism rejecting its caste system and deities and began to rearrange the religious status of India. Today, Eastern Asia is divided between Buddhismand Hinduism. Only Nepal employs both religions, considering them inextricably linked. The history and current situation of the relationship between Hinduism and Buddhism begs the question: Can Buddhism exist in a Hindu society in a way that fulfills each religion? Huston Smith s The World s Religions and the Buddhist Scriptures each contribute to this controversial conversation. Despite strong arguments for the conjunction of the two religions and the similarities they share, the philosophical and categorical difference between the two demonstrates a tension better than it does a cohesion. Since Buddhism arose from Hinduism, they share many values and goals. One mutual goal of the two religions is the concept of Nirvana or moksha. Since each religion places this sort of enlightenment as the paramount objective of its congregations, the efforts to reach it would be doubled and individuals would be more inclined to and more capable of reaching enlightenment. The views of above aspects had formed the exhibition s main concept. The Asian art academies are facing the same situation in the higher degree education of ceramic art. The day to day teaching needs new energy and clear direction; the homogeneity in teaching should be avoided, and the lack of uniqueness should be made up. These are genres that throughout centuries have succeeded in standing the tests of time. The author Issac Marion took on this genre with an undead twist. Marion published a book about a zombie, R, and his perspective of the now post apocalyptic world. As the story progresses, the audiencesees what zombie life is, R s experience of love, and the war between the living and the undead. Three years after publishing the book, Jonathan Levine created the movie adaptation. Zombies, at the time of the movie release, were perceived as romantic in an eerie way. The filmmakers interpreted the book s agents into more teen relatable characters to make the movie relatable and more of a success. Originally the book suggests R s character as a business type man. Marion described him as wearing black dress pants, gray button up, and a tie which gives him more of a mid to late twenties age range(Rawden). In the book, R has children and a marriage which would also cause for little to no interest in younger audiences since most teenagers and young adults cannot relate to this. This However, the film depicts him more of a teen or early twenties by wearing ripped jeans, simple white tee, sneakers, and a red hoodie. This change in the character s physical appearance would cause for the younger movie audiences to relate more, connect more, and ultimately causing them to have more interest in the movie. The filmmakers of the movie also chose to pick very young looking actors to emphasize this teen romance theme in the movie. Within the time frame of Queen Victoria s reign, there were major events such as Ireland s potato famine, the Crimean War, as well as the industrial revolution. In the literary world, however, the era sprouted many of the world s famous Victorian based novels that are still being read today. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland is well known by most people for its vivid use of the imagination. The story itself is one that promotes creativity, open mindedness and viewing the world in different perspectives. While Lewis Carroll s story captivates and inspires people of all ages, what brings a young girl s adventure to life are the illustrations behind it. The School by Donald Barthelme and The Giver by Louis Lowry explore death as a common theme throughout the short story and the novel. The School is a short story told from the perspective of a teacher at what seems to be an elementary or middle school. The story, consisting of a mere 1200 words, follows the numerous tragedies the school faces over roughly a month long timespan. The Giveris a novel about a dystopian society and is told from the perspective of a young boy named Jonas. • 40. Abraham Lincoln Biography Abraham Lincoln has always been my favorite historical figure and I do have to admit there are some things that I don t know about him (no, he did not hunt vampires). His life has always been interesting to me for long time. Abe Lincoln s story as a child, a lawyer, and the President of a nation that was tearing itself has always been (in my opinion) the greatest in American history. Abe Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky to Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He has an older sister named Sarah and a younger brother named Thomas who unfortunately died in infancy. In 1818, he was once kicked in the head by a horse. Before he was, he said Git up, you old hussy; git up, you old hussy. Right when he said Git up he was kicked in... Even if all the Republican voters in the House of Representatives said yes, it would be 20 votes short for the Amendment to pass. So, he had to convince several Democrats to say yes and most them did. The final vote for the Amendment was 8 absent/not voting, 56 votes against, 119 votes (with a margin of 2 votes) and the 13th Amendment passed. However, there are a number of signs you may notice if your child has a vision problem. Below is a list of signs that your child needs glasses: Squinting Squinting is one of the most common signs of vision problems in children. The reason children squint when they have vision problems is because it can help bring a blurry object into focus. Squinting slightly changes the shape of the eyes. • 42. Urbanization and Social Disparities in Cities, Questions... Question 1: Cities as Locus for Political Debate Cities are plots of land, densely covered with built environment, inhabited by dwellers; however cities are also vast network hubs, linking social, economic and political flows. Cities possess enormous human capital: they encourage exchange of ideas and intellectual opportunities. Cities are conceived upon diversity encountering individuals with different believes and points of view, coming from very different backgrounds one has a chance to test his own convictions against those of others. Cities therefore are constantly evolving subjects, where one continues to learn every minute; they also become arenas for political action and organization. In my essay I am going to discuss how through close spatial proximity and interrelation of different socio economic groups important political questions are being raised. With examples from different world regions, such as India, US and Brazil it is possible to distill a trend that urban setting through compact spatial organization provides exposure to various viewpoints and encourages its dwellers to take action, to attempt to solve infrastructural problems and organize in political groups. It is both in the city center and the periphery where people become involved into performative politics. I would argue, that physical proximity and socio economic difference present simultaneously in one space no matter whether in the center or in periphery foster one s involvement in ... Analysis of Dynacorp Case Essay Analysis of the Dynacorp Case The political lens looks at an organization from the perspective of how power and influence are distributed and wielded, how multiple stakeholders express their different preferences and get involved in or excluded from decisions, and how conflicts can be resolved (Ancona, Kochan, Scully, Van Maanen and Westney В – M2 10) . It is an arena for competition and conflict among individuals, groups and other organizations whose interests and goals differ dramatically. The roots of conflict lie in different and competing interests and disagreements require political action, including negotiation, coalition building and the exercise of power and influence. Middle managers, especially the branch managers, like Martha Pauly and product managers in Business Units pay more attention to the changed performance measurement system than focusing on the customer teams and making sure they are being more responsive to customer needs. Martha Pauly seems very confused and inattentive to what s happening in her branch and sales team. While talking about the change in organization, says that, It involves the knowledge of the industry and the company, the full line of products, our various software, applications and concepts of system integration. Exactly who handles all the pieces of sale like this is still unclear (Dynacorp revisited, 1999: M2 88 89) The team members are still operating under the old attitude, that the equipment, sells itself and that the customer will do all the integration of the products into their operations. The notion of helping the customers from initial call through implementation and use of the system is still quite unknown to many of them. Customers are more particular about the service/product, and looking for complete system solutions, more customized software, and more value added services. In the course of this change, senior managers wish the whole organization can fit with the changed situation and the operation of the new reorganized structure can be more smooth and efficient. But also through this change, the middle managers, especially branch managers and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ov Essay When one thinks of an Ohio State University student, they might first think of an Ohio resident, or maybe someone from another Midwestern state such as Michigan, Illinois, or Indiana. The student that comes to mind is most likely a white, 18 22 year old athlete who is a part of Greek life. However, one of their recent recruiting videos appeals to students who do not fit these demographics. This video can be found on Ohio State Universitys Youtube page, titled Ohio State National TV Commercial. • 45. Social Roles in Society Essay Social Roles in Society Social psychology, as defined by the Microsoft Bookshelf, is the branch of human psychology that deals with the behavior of groups and the influence of social factors on the individual. Social roles are one of the many sub categories of social psychology. I believe social roles to be the way we, as individuals, act in certain situations; such as home life, educational and economic statue, peer groups, etc. The Prison Simulation by Haney, Banks Zimbardo is just one of the vast studies in this area. In this study we will see how people take roles in life, and in simulated life situations. I noticed that the inmates that were sentenced to life acted out much more than the inmates that were only sentenced for a few years. At the time I took no great thought into this, but after reading this study I have recalled the prison tour in my mind to critically analyze why this would be. I have come to the conclusion that the life sentenced prisoners have nothing to lose by acting irrational and making spontaneous decisions. On the other hand, the inmates with the shorter sentences have something to look forward to when getting out. They do not necessarily need to act out to obtain attention, that is not what they are looking for. While looking on the Internet for yet another social role study, I came upon an old friend that also happened to be online. I decided to discuss his situation rather than one of which does not effect me as personally as this. My friend was and I guess still is a victim of alcoholism. My friend Matt is now out of the house and on his own and his parents are now divorced. Matt and I grew up together, so many of his pains I felt as well. • 47. The Sport Of Football ( Soccer ) Ronaldinho once said I learned all about life with a ball at my feet. I honestly never knew what Ronaldinho meant by this since I first heard about the quote. Every time I played soccer or touched a ball, I tried figuring out what he truly meant. I would ask my mom, my uncles, my brother, my cousins, and my friends if they knew what it meant but few of them simply didn t care or didn t even care. I was so eager to find out what he truly meant. When I was 8, in 3rd grade, I started playing the famous sport of football(soccer). Not only did I suck but I was awful at the sport! There were certain rules I didn t know, that now I think of as the most obvious rules for the sport. For example, I didn t understand the proper call for a foul.... There are ups and downs, and there are moments where you feel no good, but that shouldn t stop you from quitting on your goal. I remember these words clearly as if they were told to me yesterday and I will never forget them. I got up and with a new determined mindset, I gave him his thanks and left home. I never returned to the team after that day, but yet missed the wide man who helped me for some reason. This team made me realize the emotions of despair, misery, and dejection. I took the wide man s words into consideration, and realized that he s right. Life will bring me ups and downs just like soccer will. Due to the way I was made fun of by the others, I quit playing for almost 3 years. In 6th grade I started playing soccer again, age 11. It happened after school, when I had to stay because my mom was going to pick me up late, due to work. There were some fellow schoolmates at the field playing soccer, and out of nowhere I finally gained the eagerness to play again and touch the ball of my life. A term such as nerd can only take a person so far into the fact of being close minded. Nobody reserves the absolute right to even call a nerd a legitimate nerd solely because the derogatory term is quite offensive to certain people, and the people who are actual nerds tend to be the brighter faction of society. In this case, Fridman argues that a nerd is valuable in the sense that those distinct people will be the future and that those people will determine what lies next for the betterment of society. Fridman, at the beginning of the article, acknowledges intellectuals as people who have no value, or at the very least, he showcases how U.S. society and culture increasingly portray the intellectual as a person who is worthless. Fridman conveys Webster s New World Dictionary opinion, in which in turn is a respected source, on what it feels about smart people to demonstrate that not only are the the intellectuals downsized by the general public but are retained to the equivalent of a savage who has no sense at all.
