Allen Slate-Personal Narrative
As one drives up the California coast, they will begin to notice several things. First, the general
atmosphere shifts. The further north they travel from Los Angeles palms and golden beaches, the
cities begin to lose their positive, sunny vibes. They go from beach villas to industrial apartments
to suburban neighborhoods to run down harbor towns. The positive emotional vibrations emitted
from such architecture slowly surrenders its grip on its surroundings to a grim, hopeless one. As
new, booming cities fade into sleepy and ancient villages only occupied by drunken sailors and lost
tourists, the traveler will soon realize they are in a much less pleasant place as where they
originated their journey.
Secondly, the traveler will notice the fog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, a dark fog filled the room, the lights flickered. He felt his knees give out as he heard the
monitor give out a long, monotone blare.
His younger self collapsed to the ground like a ragdoll dropped form a little girl s hand. Another
scratch ticket appeared in Allen s hand.
God s dice chose her. You couldn t stop it. You never really had control, did you? You have lived
your life running from chance, uncertainty, luck. You thought that by running from it, you could
avoid it.
The door swung open again. The homeless man walked in, holding a lottery ticket. Blood stained
his fingerless gloves.
His skin was pale and raw, shackles attached to broken chains were wrapped around his neck and
wrists.
His eyes were glowing white. A pair of horns had sprouted from he head.
He read the card aloud, his voice cutting through the air and filling the room like coastal mist.
The words reverberated in Allen s skull. He stared down at his hands as his palms bubbled black
like tar.
He felt vertigo as his neck snapped backwards.
His vision turned red. His eyes rolled back.
The demonic words played one more time in his head. Hear that? that s the sound your fate. The
sound of dice rolling.

Increase of Women Population in Prison Essay
Women in Prison
Introduction
The growing rate of women in prison has spawned widespread awareness in our society; leading
people to question why the percentage multiplied exponentially over the past three decades. In the
past, female offenders have not only been compared to their male counterparts, but to society s
view on the role of women; the roles that labeled them as housewives and mothers. But how did
these housewives and mothers go from the home to the prisons? The subject of women s issues has
sporadically been discussed in our society, and it has just recently being uncovered that women
operate differently than men in situations; and those differences are now starting to effect the
growth rate in the population of women in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a time when, according to Hagan s theory, sons were more likely to be deviant because
they were not as restricted as their sisters. The sons were allowed to stay out late, hang out with
friends, and when their misdemeanors were fixed with the simple saying of boys will be boys .
With males having more freedom to commit delinquent acts, there was doubt that the men were
the majority of the population of prisons. As time passed and women began to embrace their
liberations, more and more of them began working outside the home. This sudden rise of women
in the workplace led to the shift in families. The number of egalitarian families in this nation
began to increase, and with that women held more equal weight in household decisions with their
husbands. A shift in the deviance of the children began to occur as well. Criminology theorists
Matza and Sykes (1957) believe that anyone can be freed up to be delinquent and under this
egalitarian household both boys and girls shared equal chances of doing just that, since there was
starting to be a lack of supervision. When the parents did come home from work the women would
bring the equal opportunity mentality with them so daughters were not being as restricted as they
were before.
The rise in the population of women in prison The imprisonment boom that began in the late 1970s
has swelled the state and federal prison system to more than 1.4 million prisoners. Adding those

Case Study Of Maggi
MAGGI : The Crisis and the way forward
Summary
This case study is about the crisis that happened to Nestle s brand Maggi. This case details how a
company who was running successfully and was the market leader for the past 30 years in the
instant noodles segment, was suddenly banned in the whole country. Owing to concerns related to
MSG and Lead levels in Maggi samples, many state government banned usage of Maggi. The
MSG and the lead levels were found way above the permissible limits.
Currently, the ban for exports has been lifted by the Bombay HC but still Maggi samples have to
be tested again and only based on successful results can Maggi resume the production.

Recommendations
The first and the foremost thing that Nestle should do is to educate the audience about what wrong
has been done through television and newspaper advertisements and active communication with the
consumers through media. They can t remain conservative at this point and need to reply to media.
Only through this can they salvage their image.
Also, although they should have hired external crisis management team pretty early, but still hiring
them is a great move on the part of Nestle. They should co work with the crisis team to develop a
fool proof strategy to recover the brand image of Maggi in the minds of the Indian consumers so
that as soon as the test results are out and ban on maggi circulation is completely removed,
consumers should be as willing to buy maggi, as they were before the incident happened.
Nestle could come out with a statement detailing all that had happened and what possibly went
wrong on their part. They should clearly specify what they have done to rectify any problem
whatsoever and what all plans they had for the future regarding the safety of their food

uses Sophie Germain as an example in the play to display and exemplify some of the struggles that
Catherine went through with her identity and her proof. Sophie Germain was a female

Warrior Chief Attendants
The Warrior Chief flanked by Warriors and Attendants is an art piece from the Nigerian state of
Benin. It s a brass artwork made using a process called wax casting which involves creating molds
into the desired shapes and pouring molten metal (in this case brass) into the molds. As the name
suggests this art piece shows a chief with his warriors and attendants. Outside of these obvious
details derived from the title, this art piece is laden with different characteristics of representation
and symbolism that narrate the artist s story behind the artwork.
A close examination of this piece concluded that this artwork is a form of propaganda; which
serves the purpose of showing the power, prestige and authority of a figure. The artist purposefully
made the middle figure the most captivating and attention drawing figure for this reason. As such
this papers focal point of analysis will be studying the different artistic tools the artist used to bring
out this particular form of propaganda.

significance of the chief. It is difficult to not notice the chiefs powerful stare and stern facial
expression. His eyes and nose sizes are clearly larger than that of the other figures to make his face
more menacing to highlight his dominance and charge. He is clutching a spear on his left hand
symbolizing how he exerts power over the warriors. The chief does not carry much; he is not as
carrying as much as the warriors and attendants. In one hand he holds a flat fan looking object,
whose designs suggest that it is an ornamental object that possibly displays his prestige and is not a

Explain Why Did Stalin Rather Than Trotsky
Essay number 1: Why did Stalin rather than Trotsky emerge as Party leader in 1929
In 1924 Lenin died and a power vacuum developed from which from which Stalin would emerge
as leader of the communist party in 1929. Even though this seemed impossible in 1924, in this
essay we will go through how exactly Stalin was able to slowly secure his grip on this position
of power and how he used the control of party organisation, luck, the weakness of his opponents,
as well as his political abilities and policies, to emerge as Party leader rather than Trotsky. Other
contenders for power except Trotsky and Stalin were Kamenev, Bukharin, Rykov and Zinoviev. But
how exactly was Stalin able to defeat all of them even though the odds seemed against him?
Though Stalin was described as being too rude 1 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

and also stopped him from attending quite a large number of Politburo meetings which weakened
his position. Furthermore Lenin s ban on factionalism made it hard for Stalin s opponents to
weaken him. Much more important is however as Jim Grant says that Stalin had offered to resign,
however this was not accepted. He also states that There was an alternative strategy available with
Bukharin and the continuation of NEP, but the Party lost its

Spina Bifida Research Paper
Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the United States. Spina
Bifida happens when a baby is in the womb and the spinal column does not close all the
way. There are four types of Spina Bifida, Occulta, Closed Neural tube defects, Meningocele, and
Myelomeningocele. Spina Bifida Occulta is one or more vertebrae are not properly formed. In
Closed Neural tube defects it consists of a diverse group of defects in which the spinal cord is
marked by malformations of fat, bone, or meninges. Meningocele is spinal fluid and meninges

the birth defect. Spina bifida often doesn t need treatment at all. Surgery after birth, prenatal
surgery are treatments for Spina Bifida. The after birth surgery is Meningocele which involves
surgery to put the meninges back in place and close the opening in the vertebrae. Prenatal surgery is
where the surgeons expose a pregnant mother s uterus surgically, open the uterus and repair the

Is Euthanasia Wrong
An assisted dying law would not result in more people dying, but in fewer people suffering
(Selby). Euthanasia, also known as physician assisted death is the painless killing of a patient
suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma (Nordqvist). There are
many famous cases involving euthanasia. For example, on April 15, 1975, Karen Ann Quinlanlost
consciousness after mixing alcohol and the drug Valium, restricting oxygen to her brain( Karen
Ann Quinlan ). After several weeks, doctors at St. Clare s Hospital in Denville, New Jersey, say
she is in a persistent vegetative state, with irreversible brain damage ( Karen Ann Quinlan ). In
August, her parents asked doctors to remove their daughter s respirator. This was the first case of
physician assisted death. Another right to die case involved Terri Schiavo. In February of 1990,at
the age of 26, Terri Schiavo collapsed at home and oxygen was cut off to her brain for several
minutes (Lynne). More recently,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All doctors take an oath known as the Hippocratic Oath at the beginning of their career stating
that they will do whatever they can for a patient in order to help them, but helping is not always
keeping them alive. Ending a person s life upon request with a purposeful goal is hardly a
malicious act, therefore it is inaccurate to compare euthanasia to murder (Starks et al.). Another
issue that many people see in physician assisted death is that it gives doctors too much power.
However, the only power that it gives them is to fulfill someone s final wishes. Another valid
point is that vital organs can be saved. There is a long list of people that are in need of a kidney,
lung, heart, and liver transplant. However, with physician assisted death the organs can be
preserved and be transplanted to someone who has been long waiting for a transplant (Messerli).
Once again, we have to put the needs of the living before the

Mothballed Fleet In America
Undoubtedly, the most egregious offender to the overall environmental health and stability of
Benicia s waterways is the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, otherwise known as the mothballed fleet.
This collection of decrepit, rusting vessels has been plaguing the beautiful waters of our Bay
Area delta for more than sixty years. Ever since these ships were decommissioned at the end of
World War II, they been left stagnant in our backyard, resulting in numerous environmental
concerns. For example, various heavy metals such as lead and anti fouling agents pollute our
waters when paint peels off the ships hulls, thus exposing the natural wildlife to dangerous
compounds. Additionally, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and other hazardous substances
have been released, which can cause rashes if eaten by humans and liver damage or even death if
consumed by animals. Thankfully, recent efforts have been made to better maintain the fleet and
protect our native species, and the entire reserve is scheduled to be sold or scrapped by February
2017.
Question #2: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though there have been some adverse health condition and people cannot swim in the water near
the fleet, there has been remarkably little impact on the human population. Nevertheless, those that
are affected live on the shoreline and thus come into contact with the polluted waters more often
than other residents. These people generally have lower incomes when compared to the Bay Area
as a whole and often have had family living in the area for decades, which causes moving out of
the city to be more difficult. However, at least these people are only marginally affected by the
fleet s pollution and can take measures to limit their exposure to hazardous substances, while local
wildlife

by developing our strengths, not by eliminating our weaknesses. For me, I said that the

Swimming became a true sport in the 19th century when Great Britain began to start holding

type of stroke that they used was breaststroke because that was the easiest way to swim at the

the South Seas and saw people using the forward crawl but with a flutter kick which is now our
modern day freestyle. Swimmingfirst became featured in the Olympics in 1896 and the only
strokes that were raced were Freestyle and Breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904

Solutions For A Better Service
Solutions for a Better Service Data and information are powerful tools use to design, plan, manage
and maintain an entity; when information and data is collected, recorded, analyzed and presented,
we are experiencing the use of statistics. According to The Florida State University (2010),
Statistics is the mathematical science involved in the application of quantitative principles to the

well our instructor s lessons and styles are perceived by our customers. Some classes and
instructors are more popular than others, so there are times when zero participants show up for our

instructor earn free money without any productive outcome. The data are originally obtained when
participants sign up for the class.

Turning Point Of The American Revolution

have.
Most of the people in America before the revolution had no reason to revolt. In fact, nearly в…”
of all colonists were either neutral or against going to war with England. They had no reason to
escape England s bond. The only people who were set to gain anything from the revolution was
the elites and the wealthy of the time. In fact, most of those whom were loyal to the Revolution
either kept or gained great swathes of land, as Lord Fairfax had (84). Also, most of the wealthy
would buy in so to say by purchasing government bonds that would exponentially grow value as
the nation would grow in the future. Not only for these reasons did the wealthy prosper. They
were also promised a head at the table when forming the new nation. As Zinn points out on page
90, the rich were in a position to start writing business friendly laws that would benefit them. The
American Revolution is usually seen as a revolution of the people, but it is quite obvious that it was
simply an orchestrated coup

The Controversy Of Online Gambling
Contrary to what some people think, online gambling is not that bad. In a controlled environment,
gambling can actually be healthy. When most people hear the word Gambling , they think of
some scary people in a dark alley slanging some dice and drinking booze. Some think of Foxwoods
s multiple casinos, but that s not the type of gamblingi m talking about.
The gambling I am talking about is virtual or Online gambling, and In some cases illegal gambling
of non tangible items or goods. Non tangible items, you ask? Virtual items. Some of the most
gambled non tangible items include weapon skins, character skins, chests that contain random
skins, player accounts, and keys to open chests. I myself used to trade items in a videogame called

discovered a new betting site. It is clear from his tone that he is trying to appear as though he
does not own the underaged gambling site. He talks about how enthralled he was when he won a
$69 skin with their services. He goes on to say that he was offered the opportunity to be sponsored
by the site, csgolotto.com. He mentions that he would want to make more gambling videos if he
did not have to risk his own skins. At this point TmarTn claims no ownership of the website. As it
was a underage gambling site, and the most popular site at the time, it was quickly shut down by
the government and on behalf of valve, the manufacturer of the desktop application steam which the
game cs:go was on. Valve made it clear that they did not endorse underage gambling. The owners
of the website released a business contract to the government as required, and on the bottom of the
contract was signed TmarTn and another youtuber with 9 million subscriber s named Syndicate.
Might I add, Syndicate pulled the same story as TmarTn, endorsing the website and claiming to
have no affiliation with the website. They were in turn, both sued by valve, which is a company
you do not want to mess with by the way. Both of them also got permanently banned from cs:go.

Yoga Research Papers
Yoga
San Francisco State University
First thoughts that come into my head when I think about yoga are body flexibility, body
movements and relaxation. Though yoga is more than that, it has deeper connections to the mind
body. Connecting with the mind body is a great communication to have because knowing what our
bodies feel helps us figure out if we are tired, hungry, or hurting. Finding the connection between the
mind and body is one of the best breathtaking moments. This being said, there are plenty of benefits
that yoga has to offer. For example, yoga helps us with balancing a healthy lifestyle, because we
become aware of the outcomes from practicing yoga. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are quite a few different yoga posses and each one has a benefit towards the mind body
connection. As of 2011, 1,300 poses had been described and 200 had been video graphed
(Rockwood, Media, 2009). As a beginner it can be tough to perform some poses since there are
different ones with different names. Also, it may be challenging to do complete certain poses if
we are not familiar with how to precede a pose. For example, when I first tried yoga I had no
clue what was going on or how to remain in a certain position. Though not being familiar with
the different poses that were being practice during my first yoga class, helped me relax my body
and tension that I was holding on. In a way that I was able to listen to the teacher and just be
mindful. Yoga poses have been catalogued since before written history. Depictions of yoga
poses were found engraved on soapstone seals in the ruins of the cities of Mohenjo Daro and
Harappa, which flourished at least 5,000 years ago in the Indus River Valley (Rockwood, Media,
2009). Yoga poses have been around for a while and they are being practice in today s life style.
Seems to be famous since many people from different ages are studying and practicing it. For
example, college students may practice yoga to help reduce stress since balancing schoolwork and
personal life might cause stress. Yoga can be practice at any age single women and

Three Developmental Issues In Everyday Life

defecit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders, characterized
by problems with inattentiveness, over activity, impulsivity, or a combination. For these problems
to be diagnosed as AD/HD, they must be out of the normal range for the child s age and

Alcohol Drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, including symptoms like behavior
abnormalities, low birth weight, and medical problems. If you re pregnant or think you may be
pregnant you should not be consuming alcohol at all. 2.Smoking Smoking is not only bad for
you, but bad for your baby as well. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen that
the baby receives and increases the risk of miscarriage, bleeding, and morning sickness.
Chemicals inhaled while smoking may lead to other health problems with the baby. Reduced
birth weight, premature birth, increased risk of SIDS, and stillbirth are other possible
consequences. Pregnant women should also avoid second hand smoke. 3.Caffeine There are
many conflicting studies about caffeine and pregnancy and some believe that caffeine is not as
harmful as it was once thought to be. The FDA warns against caffeine consumption during
pregnancy because it has been shown to affect fetal heart rates and awake time which is when
fetuses grow when sleeping. The FDA suggests quitting or reducing consumption at the very

Nature Themes in Hurston s Novels, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee
Nature themes resound throughout Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the
Suwanee. Perhaps two of the most notable instances where the lush Florida scenery augments the
novels plot lines are the tree scenes , in which Janie kisses Johnny Taylor beneath the pear tree in
Their Eyes Were Watching God (p. 10 12) and Arvey loses her virginity to Jim beneath the
mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee (p. 37 pp. 50 53).
Close readings of the two passages reveal sexually charged language. In Their Eyes Were Watching
God, the pear tree s barren brown stems and the snowy virginity of bloom are referenced, possibly

In Janie s revelation about her sexuality, she longs to be a pear tree any tree in bloom! This
metaphor for Janie s youth and vitality suggest she is in the spring of her life, with her glossy
leaves and bursting buds and struggling to make sense of the marriage that is buzzing through the
air with bees. Thus in this scene, Janie crosses the threshold from childhood to adulthood, a passage
made complete by her hasty marriage to Logan Killicks, a man far beyond the tumultuous spring of
youth that Janie is in the midst of in this passage.
The passages with the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee focus more on a sense of rebirth.
When Arvey first takes Jim to the mulberry tree, it is because she wants a cleansing of her sacred
place from her old feelings for Carl. The images of the new mulberries growing perpetuate this
theme of rebirth in this scene. The word green also repeats itself, implying a sense of youth. This
is not so much maturation for Arvey (as it was for Janie) as it is a rebirth, a changing of her ways
as well as an introduction into sexuality. The actual scene where Arvey loses her virginity is rife
with violent images; the tearing have cloth, the gritting of teeth, juxtaposed against images of
passion. It is ironic that this should occur in her green temple of peace, but at the same time, Arvey
is essentially finally crossing the bridge

The Right to Bear Arms Essay
The Right to Bear Arms How many of us want the U.S. government to have the right to tell us
what to do, and when w can do it. There are probably not many who would agree that the
government should have that right. Though having gun control laws is not to that extreme, some
would say it is the first step. Growing up in a small town, and also growing up with guns my
whole life I was one of those people who did not want gun control laws. Then after reading two
articles that discussed this topic I found that I have been ignorant about this subject. I read the
articles that discussed gun control by J. Warren Cassidy and Nan Desuka. In the first article The

Desuka also argues that owning a handgun is not protected under the Second Amendment The
Second Amendment may be fairly paraphrased thus : Because an organized militia is necessary
to the security of the State, the people have the right to possess weapons. But the owners of
handguns are not members of a well regulated militia ( 424). In this essay the author is banning
of some handguns. After reading each article and analyzing them, I found the Desuka essay to
be a better composed essay for several reasons. The first reason the Desuka essay is more
effective than Cassidy is, because Desuka tends to be more of a believable authority than does
Cassidy. Cassidy at the time of the essay was the NRA S ( National Rifle Association ) executive
vise president. The NRA is the biggest advocate for the right to bear arms. In his essay, Cassidy
seems to be more involved in trying to sell memberships for the NRA than trying to show why there
shouldn t be any gun control laws: There are better ways to advance our society than to excuse
criminal behavior. The NRA initiated the first hunter safety program, which has trained millions of
young hunters. We are the shooting sport s leading safety organization, with more than 26,000

Differences Between Arab Immigrants And White Race
Arab immigrants living in the Western society often compare their identity to the White race. The
two main factors that differentiate the Arab immigrants and the Western White race are the two
factors of gender and religion. Gender relations is often associated with Arabs creating their
identity compared to the whites, this is because gender is associated with gender roles and the
hierarchy of power (Ajrouch, 2004, p. 372). Another type of comparison is the factor of religion;
White Christians often follow the Bible, which talk about the ideal breadwinner man and caretaker
women. But, studies have shown that between Christians and White women both were affected by
religiosity and ethnicity that relate to traditional gender roles (Ajrouch, 2004, p. 374) In the western
society, Arab women can choose to accept or... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This word is often associated with recent Arab immigrants who have not fully adopted the
mainstream culture (Ajrouch, 2004, p. 379). Moreover, the boater identity was seen as
undesirable label, therefore, more immigrants worked hard to get rid of this label over time to
be considered Arab American (Ajrouch, 2004, p. 380). Conflicts also arise between girls who
wear hijabs and those who choose not too; girls who wear hijabs are seen as morally superior
which symbolizes the pinnacle of respect and distances themselves from the idea of freedom
(Ajrouch, 2004, p. 383). Another aspect compares the relation between Arab men and women;
women are expected to adhere to the religious restrictions as it enhances their worth. An example of
this would be Arab girls not getting into relationship or doing anything sexually with a guy; this is
a double standard that the men do not have to follow through with and only perpetuates the idea of
the social hierarchy with men on

The Role Of Masculinity In Videogames
Masculinity, as defined by Webster, is the possession of the qualities traditionally associated with
men. In the year of 2018, are we still following these traditional senses of masculinity in
nontraditional ways? Traditional masculinity/ hegemonic masculinity can be defined as a practice
that legitimizes men s dominant position in society, justifies the subordination of women, and other
marginalized ways of being a man. Even in such an advance society our ideas of masculinitylag in
comparison to our overall development of a greater culture. This delay is evident in our work
environments, classrooms, and any other place imaginable.
Through our advancement of society, technology itself has been a big contributor to the
continuation of hegemonic masculinity way of thinking. One of the ways technology enforces this
ideology is through themes presented in videogames. As stated by Nina Huntemann in her 2000
film, Game Over: Gender, Race, Violence in Video Games, video games are often filled with

Gurian s concepts are geared towards boys and the sense of tradition masculinity. There is a way
to take these aspects of masculinity and make them positive. Gurian states one technique is to
make markers or rituals for the boys to accomplish. Like in videogames, there is often a mission
to accomplish, so creating curriculum that is more goal oriented can help boys to focus and
succeed. And Orenstein s ideology for girls would be to stress accomplishments as it is seen that
they do not generally take credit for their own accomplishments. My goal would be to make a
healthier class for both girls and boys. Though my approach may be different, I will hold both
genders to the same standards. I would not fall victim to the idea of boys will be boys . I instead

In the United States, child labor and sweatshops are illegal, and society frowns upon any business

A Feminist Reading of The Awakening
The Awakening is not new to me. However, in the class when I read it before the instructor refused
to entertain a feminist criticism. The theory presented was that Edna knew what kind of man she
was marrying and all these things she went through: her friendship with Madame Reisz leaving the
house, entertaining her friends at the party, her situation with Robert and Arobin were all selfish
efforts toward the ultimate freedom which is death.

Her search for freedom builds and destroys relationships. She befriends people and then chooses
to ignore them. Her final big party is her final farewell. She brings out all the sensuousness that her
reserve had kept her from expressing and enjoying. Everything pleasing to the senses is there for
her guests. There are colors, textures, tastes, and sounds for the senses to luxuriate. But all this
sensory enhancements doesn t keep her attention. She feels the same old ennui, and the party
shortly thereafter breaks up. Of course, all this meets with Leonce disapproval. His concern is not
about his wife s mental or emotional health, but rather, what people will say.
To experience freedom of the soul Edna has no choice but to return to the sea. It is the only thing
capable of giving her the emotional security and sensual satisfaction at the same time. She goes to
it and allows it to claim her.
Like many of Chopin s stories, The Awakeningends in a death. Chopin apparently sees death as
the ultimate freedom. No matter what we do as women in this world we are always restricted in
our movements by some facet of our lives. While Chopin tries to speak for women, I think this
premise that our lives are restricted also applies to men. There may not be as many restrictions but
they are there. Freedom s just another word for nothin left to loose. Janis Joplin

The Importance of Chariot Racing for the Romans Essays
The Importance of Chariot Racing for the Romans
Racing has been a pastime for humans ever since we were able to tame animals and since we have
had the technology to allowed us. There are so many forms of racing in the world today that have
been shaped through hundreds and thousands of years. What is it that attracts us to racing? Is it the
speed, potential crashes or even just the atmosphere? To answer this question many things have to
be considered.
To start with lets look at the start of the Rome, at the first celebration of the Consualia in honour of

The Song of Roland is the oldest epic poem in French, written by an anonymous poet, composed
in between late eleven century to twelfth century. This epic poetry holds an important place in

The time, when The Song of Roland was composed, is the era of creating national identity for
diverse kingdoms to unite and form a harmonious cultural area. To recognize the self it becomes
important to separates the other in terms of race, religion and culture. For The Song of Roland,
religion is selected to separate others . The misrepresentation of Muslims as pagans can be found
throughout the poem, which helps Christians to recognize themselves righteous and superior to
Muslims. Davies Norman quotes T.S. Eliot in Europe: A History, The dominant feature in creating
a common culture...is religion... I am talking about the common tradition of Christianity which has
made Europe. (Norman qtd. Eliot 9). Eliot emphasizes the importance of Christianity for Europe.
Christianity become a symbol for medieval Europe and gives a label of Christendom to the nation.
The self recognition by separating others continues. In thirteen and fourteenth century, Christians
gain prejudice by persecuting and demonizing Jews. George M. Frederickson quotes Joshua
Trachtenberg in Religion and Invention of Racism, Not being a human being but a demonic, a
diabolic beast fighting the forces of truth...was the Jew as medieval Europe saw him.

Vertical Integration Of Film Industry
When we think of the film industry in Hollywood, we often picture it in our mind as an ideal
industry full of fame and money. What makes the production process of films in Hollywood so
successful? The answer is the studio system. According to Hollywoodlexicon.com, the studio
system is a business model adopted by five major Hollywood studios Paramount Pictures, Metro
Goldwyn Mayer, Warner Brothers Pictures, 20th Century Fox and RKO that combined all facets of
filmproduction with studio owned distribution chains. In fact, The Big Five Studios possessed 17%
of the theaters that owned 45% of domestic film rentals by 1945. The genesis of the studio system
began when the studio system first took over Thomas Edison s organization called the... Show more

The term vertical integration refers to the structure of a marketplace that is integrated (rather than
segregated) at a variety of crucial levels; in the case of the motion picture industry, the studio system
established a market in which the studios are owners of their production facilities, distribution
outlets, and theaters (Belton 68). Since the studios could control the entire process of production,
distribution/booking and exhibition, they could be recognized as a monopoly. The studios even
owned their actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters, art directors, and other
staff by keeping them all under a contract. The formation of vertical integration first started in the
1910s, when independent exhibitors and independent distributors were denied motion pictures by
the trust. Independent exhibitors had to pay fees to the trust if they wanted to use its theaters and
many refused the idea of paying those fees while independent distributors disliked the idea of the
trust s control on the supply of films. These problems resulted in the merging of distribution
companies and production companies as they sought to get into production. The mergers bought
theater chains and exhibitors contributed their distribution and production to the merger s
business model. An example is the establishment of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, which was merged
from Metro Pictures, Louis B. Mayer Picture Corp, and Goldwyn Pictures in 1924. The formation
of Metro Goldwyn Mayer was made possible by Marcus Loew, who owned a chain of theaters and
bought the individual companies Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Picture
Corp. in order to get into production and distribution. This merge gave Metro Goldwyn Mayer the
ability to optimize the distribution, production and exhibition processes of a movie. To

Public Law Framers
Public law is the relationship between the government and its constituents. The Court has been a
key player in ensuring the majority rule, the Framers envisioned. The Court is not only an officer
over governmental actions, but ensures fundamental freedoms. The Court is the mediator to issues
between the people and the government. The Supreme Court asserts judicial responsibility in
addressing the concerns of the people in times of crisis. Judicial intervention is necessary and thus
has become a powerful branch with vast influence over the executive and legislative. The Framers

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Gics
Global In house Centers or GICs in India are 3 4 times more cost effective than their western
counterparts, but when it comes to automating processes, there s still a long way to go. While we
are steadily moving forward to a time when automated solutions can be implemented on a broader
scale across industries, GICs in the Indian market right now also have a long way to go. Globally,
this space has a $34 billion valuation, with Indiaoccupying a mammoth 40% of market share. With
the implementationof AI, machine learning and cognitive abilities, GICs in India can massively
ramp up their market share even further.
Potential Areas for Automation
The very nature of GICs implies that they provide support to the core business of the parent
organization, hence they cannot afford to overlook investments towards technology and
automation to improve productivity. This automation is usually triggered by a few necessities and
they are also applicable in order for automation tools and processes to be feasible and successful.
GICs thus need their automation to fulfill three key parameters it should tackle tasks that a
majority of people would not be inclined or motivated to perform, it should provide the most bang
for the buck in the form of tangible ROI, and it should be future looking and scalable. Otherwise it
simply isn t worth the investment of time and money that it requires. ... Show more content on

The Scopes Monkey Trial
In the United States, the early 1920s was a time of shifting and conflicting moral values due to
people attempting to see which values would dominate the nation s culture. One conflict was
between science and religion; ever since science began to explain what once was unexplainable, it
clashed with religion. Thus, in 1925, the Scopes Monkey Trial revealed the struggle of America s
culture between the forces of Traditionalism and Modernism. The mixture of religion and science
caused one of the most famous debates in American history to occur because ideas were the main
focus instead of an actual crime. The Scopes Trial opened the doors to the conflict between faith
and science that made it the trial of the century.
Dayton is a small beautiful Southern town in Tennessee with only a few thousand inhabitants.
However, in 1925, Dayton was on the front pages of newspapers all over the United States.
Thousands of Americans were arriving to watch the spectacle that happened in this town. Mencken,
one of the reporters that came to see the trial unfold, stated that the Scopes Trial was an
extraordinary opportunity to put the small town of Dayton on the map (Scopes Trial, Mencken s
Trial Account, July 9, p. 1). Not only that, the trial brought Clarence Darrow, the nation s greatest
defense attorney, and William Jennings Bryan, the nation s greatest political orator and three time
presidential candidate, into the trial. Due to these factors, New York Times called it the most

John Ford’s acclaimed film The Man Who Shot Liberty...
John Ford s acclaimed film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) is well known among
cinema buffs and historians to have emerged out of a brutal, often contentious process. Tension
between the lead actors, as well as tension between the actors and the director, spawned some of
the best behind the scenes stories of on set rivalry and outright pettiness that still circulate in an
industry that is primarily built on controversy and rumor. The film itself must be regarded as a
masterpiece. This assessment is due in part to the brilliant performances by the cast and also in
part to an elegant, carefully crafted script. That said; one of the main reasons that the film
distinguishes itself above many of ford s other brilliant films is due to... Show more content on

This image is itself, an indication that the film intends to deal with a clash of ages or civilizations
within the context of American history. The train station and train are symbols for the conquering
of the West and the industrialization of America. In other words, the film expresses important
ideas about the age old theme of progress versus tradition, as well as society versus the individual.
The central question of the film is whether or not the kind of frontier justice of the West, which was
built on gun fighting and local law enforcement, was adaptable to the modern age. The character of
Ransom Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) symbolizes the transition of American society by earning
his fame as a politician. The true frontiersman, Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), suffers a drastically
different fate. Despite being the man who actually shot Liberty Valance, Doniphon remains
unknown to fame. This is Ford s way of communicating to the audience that those who are in power
in our society are often in power through no power of their own. Also that the true spirit of America
resides in the common man, rather than in the man who is celebrated and attains social power and
influence.
Given these facts, the film can be seen as a cautionary tale considering the present day
homogenization of culture. With an increase in social conformity comes a decrease in personal
morality. This is shown by the

Murillo s Representations of Seville
BartolomГ© Esteban Murillo was a Spanish Baroque painter born in Seville in late December
of 1617. While many of his contemporaries would leave their native lands to seek commissions
elsewhere, Murillo stayed true to his roots and remained in Seville for most of his life, with the
exception of two short stays in Madrid: one from 1642 1645 and the other for several months in
1658. While these excursions particularly the first played a noteworthy role in the development of
his personal style, Murillo ultimately chose to found his Academy of Painting in his hometown.
Murillo was a prolific and talented painter who acquired numerous followers as well as
international recognition during his artistic career. He is best known for his religious... Show more

At the age of fifteen, he began training in the studio of Juan del Castillo, a Venetian influenced
Sevillian painter who went on to only be recognized in history as the teacher of Murillo. In 1642,
Murillo took the money that he had earned by making crude tempera paintings called sargas and
moved to Madrid, where he studied the works of Titian, Rubens, and Van Dyck. He even had the
opportunity to study with VelГЎzquez for a short time, though Murillo never ended up doing royal
court art. He received his first commission in 1645 from the Convent of San Francisco, and he
ascended to become one of the predominant painters of his city over the course of the 1650s. This
increased renown was fueled by a commission to create paintings for the Seville Cathedral. In 1648,
Murillo married DoГ±a Beatriz Cabrera and went on to have three children with her. His works
became high in demand and he received many important commissions, both from churches and
from individual collectors and merchants, particularly those who had come to Spain from the
Netherlands. He died in 1682 while in the process of making a cycle of paintings for a church in
Cadiz. During the mid 17th century, the period of Murillo s rise to prominence, Seville was a
suffering city. The impoverished and hungry citizens were overtaxed in order to fund the foreign
wars. The inland city became less significant as a trading

Costs Of Globalization And Localization
Globalization and localization are two conflicting trends in international politics today.
Globalization is the spread of peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies
from one area of the world to another. (Rosenau 15) Localization is the narrowing of horizons and
the confinement of peoples, activities, norms, ideas, goods, services, and currencies to a particular
geographic area. (Rosenau 16) Globalizationand localization affect the world s countries in three
main areas, politics, economics, and culture. Both globalization and localization have many
benefits, as well as many costs.

Participation in global organizations also undermines political autonomy of countries.
At the same time that globalization of the world is increasing, there are also strong localization
sentiments. Many things can be gained by the emphasis of local distinctiveness in politics, culture,
and economy. Politically, localization gives governmental autonomy to nations. Countries can
spend all their time and effort on programs and policies that emphasize their priorities.
Economically, the activities of producers and consumers are constricted to the country, which
provides support for domestic businesses and full consumption of the goods they produce.
Culturally, localization gives nations a rich sense of heritage and strengthens traditional customs
and ideas. (Rosenau 17) Localization serves to strengthen individual countries.
While there are benefits to localization, there are also costs. Localization decreases international
trade and investment which decreases the amount and variety of goods and services available to
people. Localization also prevents new customs and ideas from entering a country that could enrich
their culture. Without participation in international political organizations, a country is without
allies and support in times of military or economic crisis.
Globalization and localization can best be understood by examining current events. One of the most
prevalent examples of globalization today is evident in the first

In the essay Me Talk Pretty One Day, David Sedaris talks about his first experiences in France.
He talks about his teacher, and how she degrades every student, but he doesn t understand why.
Sedaris uses various examples of logos, ethos, and pathos, throughout the essay. Logos means an
appeal to logic or reason; ethos means an appeal in one s own character; and pathos means an
appeal to the emotions of one another. Sedaris portrays Logos, Ethos, and Pathos in the essay,
Me Talk Pretty One Day, to achieve a comic effect. Sedaris uses logos by portraying an
unreasonable behavior throughout his essay to achieve an amusing effect. One example of logos

Ethical Arguments Against Euthanasia
I will let my aunt chose to live or die! Euthanasia also medically termed as physician assisted
suicide , is medically defined; by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as suicide by a patient facilitated
by means or information (as a drug prescription or indication of the lethal dosage) provided by a
physician who is aware of how the patient intends to use such means or information. Individuals all

A Tale Of Two Cities And The French Revolution
A Tale of Two Cities, was a story about sacrifice and revenge before and during revolutionary
France. Charles Dickens thought that if things did not change, then a violent revolution in England,
similar to the French Revolution, was possible or in the future. In A Tale of Two Cities , Charles
Dickens symbolizes the discord that the English and the French faced as he tears apart the two
systems of their society.
Charles Dickens, a brilliant author back in the 1850 s, wrote A Tale of Two Citiesin order to
describe the similarities between the forces that led to the revolution and the oppression and unrest
occurring in England. The French revolution impacts history because the time period in which it
takes place is before and during the French revolution. The French revolution signifies the essence
of a rapid change, nevertheless, this change tore France right at the heart, where all the government
was functioning . France was torn apart because of the rebellions of the Bourgeoisie, against the
rich aristocrats, consequently the monarch Louis 14th. Charles Dickens went further. He conveys
the idea of the French revolution through the use of social reform along with its inevitable impact
on the individuals affected by the waves of change. Throughout history, the road to revolution is
described as an obsession to the minority group such as the American revolution in the late 18th
century. It is dangerous when a group goes down this road because the obstacle up ahead

  • 2. Allen Slate-Personal Narrative As one drives up the California coast, they will begin to notice several things. First, the general atmosphere shifts. The further north they travel from Los Angeles palms and golden beaches, the cities begin to lose their positive, sunny vibes. They go from beach villas to industrial apartments to suburban neighborhoods to run down harbor towns. The positive emotional vibrations emitted from such architecture slowly surrenders its grip on its surroundings to a grim, hopeless one. As new, booming cities fade into sleepy and ancient villages only occupied by drunken sailors and lost tourists, the traveler will soon realize they are in a much less pleasant place as where they originated their journey. Secondly, the traveler will notice the fog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, a dark fog filled the room, the lights flickered. He felt his knees give out as he heard the monitor give out a long, monotone blare. His younger self collapsed to the ground like a ragdoll dropped form a little girl s hand. Another scratch ticket appeared in Allen s hand. God s dice chose her. You couldn t stop it. You never really had control, did you? You have lived your life running from chance, uncertainty, luck. You thought that by running from it, you could avoid it. The door swung open again. The homeless man walked in, holding a lottery ticket. Blood stained his fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and raw, shackles attached to broken chains were wrapped around his neck and wrists. His eyes were glowing white. A pair of horns had sprouted from he head. He read the card aloud, his voice cutting through the air and filling the room like coastal mist. The words reverberated in Allen s skull. He stared down at his hands as his palms bubbled black like tar. He felt vertigo as his neck snapped backwards. His vision turned red. His eyes rolled back. The demonic words played one more time in his head. Hear that? that s the sound your fate. The sound of dice rolling. Happy

  • 4. Increase of Women Population in Prison Essay Women in Prison Introduction The growing rate of women in prison has spawned widespread awareness in our society; leading people to question why the percentage multiplied exponentially over the past three decades. In the past, female offenders have not only been compared to their male counterparts, but to society s view on the role of women; the roles that labeled them as housewives and mothers. But how did these housewives and mothers go from the home to the prisons? The subject of women s issues has sporadically been discussed in our society, and it has just recently being uncovered that women operate differently than men in situations; and those differences are now starting to effect the growth rate in the population of women in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a time when, according to Hagan s theory, sons were more likely to be deviant because they were not as restricted as their sisters. The sons were allowed to stay out late, hang out with friends, and when their misdemeanors were fixed with the simple saying of boys will be boys . With males having more freedom to commit delinquent acts, there was doubt that the men were the majority of the population of prisons. As time passed and women began to embrace their liberations, more and more of them began working outside the home. This sudden rise of women in the workplace led to the shift in families. The number of egalitarian families in this nation began to increase, and with that women held more equal weight in household decisions with their husbands. A shift in the deviance of the children began to occur as well. Criminology theorists Matza and Sykes (1957) believe that anyone can be freed up to be delinquent and under this egalitarian household both boys and girls shared equal chances of doing just that, since there was starting to be a lack of supervision. When the parents did come home from work the women would bring the equal opportunity mentality with them so daughters were not being as restricted as they were before. The rise in the population of women in prison The imprisonment boom that began in the late 1970s has swelled the state and federal prison system to more than 1.4 million prisoners. Adding those ... Also, although they should have hired external crisis management team pretty early, but still hiring them is a great move on the part of Nestle. They should co work with the crisis team to develop a fool proof strategy to recover the brand image of Maggi in the minds of the Indian consumers so that as soon as the test results are out and ban on maggi circulation is completely removed, consumers should be as willing to buy maggi, as they were before the incident happened. It s a brass artwork made using a process called wax casting which involves creating molds into the desired shapes and pouring molten metal (in this case brass) into the molds. As the name suggests this art piece shows a chief with his warriors and attendants. Outside of these obvious details derived from the title, this art piece is laden with different characteristics of representation and symbolism that narrate the artist s story behind the artwork. A close examination of this piece concluded that this artwork is a form of propaganda; which serves the purpose of showing the power, prestige and authority of a figure. The artist purposefully made the middle figure the most captivating and attention drawing figure for this reason. Even though this seemed impossible in 1924, in this essay we will go through how exactly Stalin was able to slowly secure his grip on this position of power and how he used the control of party organisation, luck, the weakness of his opponents, as well as his political abilities and policies, to emerge as Party leader rather than Trotsky. • 11. Is Euthanasia Wrong An assisted dying law would not result in more people dying, but in fewer people suffering (Selby). Euthanasia, also known as physician assisted death is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma (Nordqvist). There are many famous cases involving euthanasia. For example, on April 15, 1975, Karen Ann Quinlanlost consciousness after mixing alcohol and the drug Valium, restricting oxygen to her brain( Karen Ann Quinlan ). After several weeks, doctors at St. Clare s Hospital in Denville, New Jersey, say she is in a persistent vegetative state, with irreversible brain damage ( Karen Ann Quinlan ). In August, her parents asked doctors to remove their daughter s respirator. This was the first case of physician assisted death. Another right to die case involved Terri Schiavo. In February of 1990,at the age of 26, Terri Schiavo collapsed at home and oxygen was cut off to her brain for several minutes (Lynne). More recently,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All doctors take an oath known as the Hippocratic Oath at the beginning of their career stating that they will do whatever they can for a patient in order to help them, but helping is not always keeping them alive. Ending a person s life upon request with a purposeful goal is hardly a malicious act, therefore it is inaccurate to compare euthanasia to murder (Starks et al.). Another issue that many people see in physician assisted death is that it gives doctors too much power. However, the only power that it gives them is to fulfill someone s final wishes. Another valid point is that vital organs can be saved. There is a long list of people that are in need of a kidney, lung, heart, and liver transplant. However, with physician assisted death the organs can be preserved and be transplanted to someone who has been long waiting for a transplant (Messerli). • 12. Mothballed Fleet In America Undoubtedly, the most egregious offender to the overall environmental health and stability of Benicia s waterways is the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, otherwise known as the mothballed fleet. This collection of decrepit, rusting vessels has been plaguing the beautiful waters of our Bay Area delta for more than sixty years. Ever since these ships were decommissioned at the end of World War II, they been left stagnant in our backyard, resulting in numerous environmental concerns. For example, various heavy metals such as lead and anti fouling agents pollute our waters when paint peels off the ships hulls, thus exposing the natural wildlife to dangerous compounds. Additionally, polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, and other hazardous substances have been released, which can cause rashes if eaten by humans and liver damage or even death if consumed by animals. Thankfully, recent efforts have been made to better maintain the fleet and protect our native species, and the entire reserve is scheduled to be sold or scrapped by February 2017. Question #2: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though there have been some adverse health condition and people cannot swim in the water near the fleet, there has been remarkably little impact on the human population. Nevertheless, those that are affected live on the shoreline and thus come into contact with the polluted waters more often than other residents. These people generally have lower incomes when compared to the Bay Area as a whole and often have had family living in the area for decades, which causes moving out of the city to be more difficult. However, at least these people are only marginally affected by the fleet s pollution and can take measures to limit their exposure to hazardous substances, while local wildlife ... • 22. Turning Point Of The American Revolution Overall, the American Revolution is not a massive turning point in our history socially. It did not make any major changes to the social structure, how people were treated, and local laws. It only really exacerbated issues that were inevitable to change, such as voting rights and african american s rights. The only real change was the new political system. The American Revolutionwas a turning point in our history, but not one that should be blown out of proportion as many current day people have. Most of the people in America before the revolution had no reason to revolt. In fact, nearly в…” of all colonists were either neutral or against going to war with England. They had no reason to escape England s bond. The only people who were set to gain anything from the revolution was the elites and the wealthy of the time. In fact, most of those whom were loyal to the Revolution either kept or gained great swathes of land, as Lord Fairfax had (84). Also, most of the wealthy would buy in so to say by purchasing government bonds that would exponentially grow value as the nation would grow in the future. Not only for these reasons did the wealthy prosper. They were also promised a head at the table when forming the new nation. Nature Themes in Hurston s Novels, Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee Nature themes resound throughout Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Seraph on the Suwanee. Perhaps two of the most notable instances where the lush Florida scenery augments the novels plot lines are the tree scenes , in which Janie kisses Johnny Taylor beneath the pear tree in Their Eyes Were Watching God (p. 10 12) and Arvey loses her virginity to Jim beneath the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee (p. 37 pp. 50 53). In Janie s revelation about her sexuality, she longs to be a pear tree any tree in bloom! This metaphor for Janie s youth and vitality suggest she is in the spring of her life, with her glossy leaves and bursting buds and struggling to make sense of the marriage that is buzzing through the air with bees. Thus in this scene, Janie crosses the threshold from childhood to adulthood, a passage made complete by her hasty marriage to Logan Killicks, a man far beyond the tumultuous spring of youth that Janie is in the midst of in this passage. The passages with the mulberry tree in Seraph on the Suwanee focus more on a sense of rebirth. When Arvey first takes Jim to the mulberry tree, it is because she wants a cleansing of her sacred place from her old feelings for Carl. The images of the new mulberries growing perpetuate this theme of rebirth in this scene. The word green also repeats itself, implying a sense of youth. This is not so much maturation for Arvey (as it was for Janie) as it is a rebirth, a changing of her ways as well as an introduction into sexuality. The term vertical integration refers to the structure of a marketplace that is integrated (rather than segregated) at a variety of crucial levels; in the case of the motion picture industry, the studio system established a market in which the studios are owners of their production facilities, distribution outlets, and theaters (Belton 68). Since the studios could control the entire process of production, distribution/booking and exhibition, they could be recognized as a monopoly. The studios even owned their actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters, art directors, and other staff by keeping them all under a contract. The formation of vertical integration first started in the 1910s, when independent exhibitors and independent distributors were denied motion pictures by the trust. Independent exhibitors had to pay fees to the trust if they wanted to use its theaters and many refused the idea of paying those fees while independent distributors disliked the idea of the trust s control on the supply of films. These problems resulted in the merging of distribution companies and production companies as they sought to get into production. The mergers bought theater chains and exhibitors contributed their distribution and production to the merger s business model. An example is the establishment of Metro Goldwyn Mayer, which was merged from Metro Pictures, Louis B. Mayer Picture Corp, and Goldwyn Pictures in 1924. The formation of Metro Goldwyn Mayer was made possible by Marcus Loew, who owned a chain of theaters and bought the individual companies Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Picture Corp. in order to get into production and distribution. This merge gave Metro Goldwyn Mayer the ability to optimize the distribution, production and exhibition processes of a movie. The Scopes Monkey Trial In the United States, the early 1920s was a time of shifting and conflicting moral values due to people attempting to see which values would dominate the nation s culture. One conflict was between science and religion; ever since science began to explain what once was unexplainable, it clashed with religion. Thus, in 1925, the Scopes Monkey Trial revealed the struggle of America s culture between the forces of Traditionalism and Modernism. The mixture of religion and science caused one of the most famous debates in American history to occur because ideas were the main focus instead of an actual crime. The Scopes Trial opened the doors to the conflict between faith and science that made it the trial of the century. This image is itself, an indication that the film intends to deal with a clash of ages or civilizations within the context of American history. The train station and train are symbols for the conquering of the West and the industrialization of America. In other words, the film expresses important ideas about the age old theme of progress versus tradition, as well as society versus the individual. The central question of the film is whether or not the kind of frontier justice of the West, which was built on gun fighting and local law enforcement, was adaptable to the modern age. The character of Ransom Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) symbolizes the transition of American society by earning his fame as a politician. The true frontiersman, Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), suffers a drastically different fate. Despite being the man who actually shot Liberty Valance, Doniphon remains unknown to fame. This is Ford s way of communicating to the audience that those who are in power in our society are often in power through no power of their own. Also that the true spirit of America resides in the common man, rather than in the man who is celebrated and attains social power and influence. Given these facts, the film can be seen as a cautionary tale considering the present day homogenization of culture. With an increase in social conformity comes a decrease in personal morality. Countries can spend all their time and effort on programs and policies that emphasize their priorities. Economically, the activities of producers and consumers are constricted to the country, which provides support for domestic businesses and full consumption of the goods they produce. Culturally, localization gives nations a rich sense of heritage and strengthens traditional customs and ideas. (Rosenau 17) Localization serves to strengthen individual countries. Charles Dickens thought that if things did not change, then a violent revolution in England, similar to the French Revolution, was possible or in the future. Charles Dickens, a brilliant author back in the 1850 s, wrote A Tale of Two Citiesin order to describe the similarities between the forces that led to the revolution and the oppression and unrest occurring in England.
