What Is The Epic Of Gilgamesh
Flood stories are a part of most ancient civilizations throughout the whole world. Yet arguably the
most well known is the story of Noah and the Ark. Today I am going to go over the other main flood
stories most closely related with the former, and show proof that out of the numerous flood narratives,
this is the most factual and realistic of all of them. First off we have the ancient Mesopotamian
narrative Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is told a story by, an immortal man, that long ago the gods
had decided to destroy the whole world by sending a flood. Upon hearing this information the man
Utanapishtim was able to build a giant ship that he stored all different species of creatures on, and
even some craftsmen for after the flood. Historians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet if it were a copy of such a story, why would all of the dimensions for the ship be factually checked
out as stable and realistic, the ability for caring and keeping alive all of the animals mentioned in both
stories, and that neither the Sumerians or the Israelites were known for their nautical skills. Sumerians
were the first to write the flood account in cuneiform then the Akkadian s carried it on, there were two
types of dialects Babylonian and Assyrian and they each had their own version of the flood story. This
shows that they were recounting the stories that they have been told, writing it in their own style.
Scholars of the Christian faith believe that the recounting of the Noah s flood was told orally and
passed down until Moses eventually wrote it to be apart of the bible. So this makes the origins of the
bible older then all of the other flood

Jack Rapke
Yesterday, I was granted the opportunity, as a New York Film, Academy alumni , to attend a Q A given
by producer, Jack Rapke, preceded by a screening of his newest film, The Walk which is based on a
true story. The movie stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (whom Rapke called Joe ) who plays French
tightrope walker Phillippe Petit who in 1974, strung a rope connecting the buildings of the world trade
center then tightrope walked across it. The movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis (who Rapke called
Bob ), starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who, much to my surprise, did all of his own stunts and speaks
fluent French. His acting performance paired with the fact that he had to switch off speaking French
and speaking English with a French accent while also balancing tediously on a tightrope was nothing
short of astounding. Even with an all star cast and crew, the movie flopped at the box office.
After the movie and before the Q A, they set up the lights and the cameras, but not just for the guest
speaker. I heard someone yell striking , not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every single student that asked a question was from a different country with a different dialect. I could
have remembered this from when I did the NYFA summer program. They love having that diversity
and I loved hearing people here and there talk in other languages to one another.
It was wonderful to listen to such an experienced person in the industry share his insights on the
business. One of the more unusual truths I learned was that talent agents for actors are petrified of
their clients. No one wants to break the tough news to one another and agents are no exception. This
came as a surprise to because, as an actor, we want desperately to be taken in by an agent, that we fear
them and what they will think of us. To realize that they re afraid of their actors too is mind boggling.
It s like everyone functions under a mutual terror of one

Flood Simulation Paper
The outcome of the trainer who is trained through role play gaming simulation is superior than the
trainer who was trained by traditional lecture method for the knowledge of flood protection measure,
flood mitigation measure, flood evacuation scheme, the way to deal with the stakeholder, important
factor of community based flood management and resident s point of view. Their test scores were also
elevated in six categories. Apparently, there were two categories which had significant improvement
while the other team did not reach that level. (see figure 4)
Eminently, a few of those knowledges did not come from the GS itself, however the trainer learned by
experiencing the community meeting planning and by the dynamic of the game which could simulate
back and forth, they could redo the process of the plan as well as they could grasp the principal
content through the process of thinking and brainstorming in the simulated community meeting. They

Experiential Learning
CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Knowledge results from the
combination of grasping (observation) and transforming reflections into action (concrete experience)
(Kolb, 1894). Nursing is a practice profession. Clinical experience in the clinical setting is the integral
part of the total education process for nursing students. (Estrella Cuarezma Sanchez, 1998) The
clinical exposure of a student nurse is an experience that is not to be taken for granted. It is as
important (if not more so) than the classroom lectures. In the field, the student nurse is allowed to
experience dealing with actual patients and witnessing medical cases first hand. That is the reason why
it is imperative that the student nurse make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sheth (2008) sighted that private hospitals possesses centralized care. Therefore, student nurses are
exposed to a conducive learning brought by ideal nursing practice exhibited in the health care setting.
In the said type of hospital, Colladilla and Argos (2000) claimed more opportunities available both
professionally and personally for its staff. Thus, student nurses in return could profit from it. Also,
these hospitals are equipped with well maintained facilities, highly technologic equipment and
complete medical supplies. (Johns, 2000) Thus, familiarization begins and would further evolve to
learning. Adequate manpower plus limited handled patients could provide a centralized care.
However, there are also disadvantages. Limited assignments are given to student nurses because they
make sure they give quality care to patients due to patient s payment for services rendered. There are
strict norms associated with providing health care interventions. Herewith, staffs nurses have
significant liability to their patients. They can not afford to make mistakes. That is why, unlike in
public hospitals, students learn more through observation of the different procedures done in the
hospital. Public hospital provides culturally competent care (Vaknin, 2008). In public hospitals,
student nurses learn from actual experience. They can assume

Arguments Against Fishing Regulation
Luke Combs Mrs. Daugherty English 9 March 20, 2017 Are Fishing Regulations Strict Enough?
Fishing has been around for thousands and thousands of years. It has been a crucial part to our
survival and well being as a human race. Nowadays fishing is not only done for food, it has also
become a recreational activity. With the large affect fishing has on our society isn t it important we
regulate what we do with the fish? Fishing regulations are used to protect what we do with the fish and
the limits we have. Commercial fishing regulations need to be stricter or fishing may not be around
forever. Fish populations are declining much faster than scientists ever thought. In fact the population
of fish has declined by nearly fifty percent since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anyways it s not like fast food fish sandwiches are required for us to survive. Also fish is wasted very
frequently, it expires or is not eaten, so that is just harming our resources for no reason. People need to
realize that fish is important, but could be used in a much smarter way. Many are reasonable and try
not to be wasteful, but too many people are. Undoubtedly, if we continue this pattern of wastefulness
with our ocean s resources there will be consequences. Many statistics and facts back this up. The
rules and regulations we are putting on commercial fishing simply aren t getting the job done. Our
ocean s fish population has declined so much in forty five years and the overfishing by commercial
boats hasn t gotten better, just worse. Remember the fate of the ocean s resources is in our very own

FBI Case study
An organization s design is made keeping in mind the decision making principle of the company and
the flow of information (both formal and informal) within the company. Four organizational structures
are the most common to all organizations, namely: hierarchical, flat, matrix and networked.
The hierarchical structure comprises of a top level management and keeps getting segmented to
different levels depending on the work that has to be done. The decision making is done by the
topmost level management in the structure while the lower level work force follows the rules made by
their seniors. The lower levels are grouped basing on their department of function such as marketing,
sales, production etc., or they are divided as divisional teams ... Show more content on

In the FBI case, it was their lack of information among departments that caused the ineffectiveness of
its performance. In the article Who killed the Virtual Case File? it is clearly identified that the gaps in
information made it difficult to solve issues in crime and terrorism.
Though the senior management in both the company cultures showed failure in embracing technology
for example in the case of FBI paper work was followed instead of using electronic documentation,
FBI also failed to identify the use of database in a smart and effective manner to store and share
information securely among departments. This was however not the case with Kodak. It was the
reluctance of senior management to accept the new technology though they identified the new horizon
of business identified by them.
Though Kodak had flaws with decision making by its senior management, they have acted upon not
making hierarchical structure as their organization s framework. Another article called Lessons from
the past by Jessica Lipnack and Jeffrey Stamps on Turning Hierarchy on its Side explains the famous
Pizza organization of Eastman Kodak. This structure encourages that company to communicate
horizontally and not vertically. There is no up or down chain of command, instead it is a cross
sectional approach. Though it maintains hierarchy, the CEO s role is more central in the structure

Essay on Environmental Economics and Government Policy
Economists often talk about letting the economy work through the mechanism of the free market
versus government control and regulation. Some believe that if the market is allowed to do its thing
unprohibited and without government interference, then resources will be allocated efficiently,
equilibrium will be found, and so on... However, this is not always possible. Of course, government
control is not perfect either. Thus, it would seem that at times the market may be more appropriate
than the government; other times the government may be needed because the market is not able to
function properly; and other times a combination of the two working in unison may provide the best
and most effective and efficient answers.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Property rights that would lead to efficient allocations have four main characteristics: universality,
exclusivity, transferability, and enforceability. Universality is when all resources are privately owned
and the entitlements are specified. Exclusivity refers to the fact that all benefits and costs due to
owning and using the resource should be directed solely at the owner. Transferability refers to the fact
that all property rights should be transferable from one owner to another in voluntary exchange. And
finally, enforceability simply means that all property rights should be secure from involuntary seizure
by others. With all of these in place, one would certainly use a resource efficiently because a decline in
the value of the resource would represent a personal loss. Furthermore, individuals will only buy as
much of something so that the marginal cost is equal to the marginal benefit that they receive from
purchasing it. And thus, with these defined property rights in place the market indeed would prevail.
Environmental problems are one important class of circumstances in which the market economic
system is not always efficient. This occurs most especially because of the presence of externalities,
and the fact that the agents making the decisions do not bear

The Principle Of Respect For Patient Autonomy Essay
Over the past several decades, the principle of respect for patient autonomy has assumed a central
place in health care. Indeed, respect for the self determining decisions or interests of patients now is an
underlying consideration for most professional codes of practice and also patient codes of rights
(Cruess Cruess, 2008; MacLeod, Wilson Malpas, 2012). The dilemma now is that fear of losing
autonomy or dignity during the dying process could lead some patients to request a hastened death. In
a study investigating physician attitudes and behaviors when utilizing end of life decisions that
hastened death, researchers found physicians who would submit to a patient s request for an assisted
death stated that respect for the patient s autonomy was important in their decision making (Fried,
Stein, O Sullivan, Brock, Novack, 1993). Physicians who would not comply with a patient s request
for an assisted death agreed that respect for autonomy was significant but instead citing other factors
such as ethical and legal concerns (Fried et al., 1993).
Expenditures
Before the passing of the new law, gravely ill Canadians were forced to travel to Switzerland for a
medically assisted death. The cost $20,000 to $30,000 when accounting for flights and
accommodation puts this option out of reach for most Canadians. The service for preparing and
monitoring the PAS can cost up to 4,000 Euros, and if they assume responsibility for having a doctor

Internet and the Music Industry
Internet and the Music Industry Cassandra Utz University of Phoenix
In our society today, there is a growing number of consumers using the Internet as a main source for
music. The smaller music companies are having to come up with new and different ways to use the
Internet to increase their sales. The music companies can drive there sales because so many people are
previewing songs online by downloading it first. The artists are also able to capitalize on their music

The bigger companies like Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Song BMG Music
Entertainment, etc., have the big dollars to promote all of their artists. Because the Internet has caught
on, all of the music companies can promote everyone. Even the little companies can do this.
Hopefully, the music industry will look at this as a blessing in disguise for the underground labels.
Looking at this in the short term of things, downloading music could hurt the music industry and their
profits. However, later down the line, it will eventually benefit them. In a study done by Ipsos Reid, it
shows that 81% of the public that download music, often spend at least the same on records or even
more than they did before downloading music from the Internet. The record industry must concentrate
on offering value to the user and adapt to the publics needs (Vives, 2004). The music industry should
try to realize that the ideas behind free downloads can benefit them. They should do what they can to
market more from it, rather than turning their noses up at the technology behind it. They should realize
that they waste more money on fighting the sites that offer free downloads and lobbing Congress to
stop the downloading, they should build a system in which all music is readily available free. Making
sites with easy to follow links to other online music store so that the people can buy music from the
same place that they listen to it.

ABSTRACT
Shelf life of fruit was significantly enhanced with minimum ripening percentage, higher number of
healthy fruit percentage in Kesar mango having sp. gr. 1.00 (M3) fallowed by sp. gr. 1.00 1.02 (M2).
Wax coating 6 per cent (R3) was effective to increasing the shelf life of fruit, ripening days, healthy
fruit per cent and minimum ripening per cent. Soft rot diseases incidence was does not found in hot
water (R1) and bavistin (R2) treatments. A comparative study on the effect of low temperature storage
of fresh harvested mango stored at 150C (T1) and 200C (T2) was made with respect to physiological
changes. Not only delay the ripening percentage with ripening day, but also increase the healthy fruit
per cent in lower temperature at 150C of storage temperature with 85% RH up to 42nd days of shelf
life.

Protections and improvement of the environment, morally is a good thing as you help protect the
homes of the animals that live there. Similar to helping the sick, there is little to no ethical dilemmas
when it comes to being eco friendly. Since the SODIS method has some environmentally based
drawbacks, it could be harmful to the environment and it will present some moral concern when it
comes to recommending the technology. The SODIS method uses plastic PET water bottles to help
disinfect the water. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and also referred to as polyester, is a common
plastic used in plastic bottles for water, soft drinks, juice and many other common items (American
Chemistry Council, 1988). The production of plastics, its frequent and disposable role and the hazards
it poses once it needs to be disposed of has made the use of plastic an environmental drawback to the
SODIS method. PET can be reused but only to a certain extent. PET bottles should be replaced within
6 to 12 months and should no longer be used if they get scratched or show signs of wear (SODIS,
2009). When it comes to the disposal of the bottle, there are two methods each with its own
drawbacks. The first method, landfills use up lots of space which could be better used. Also, due to the
lack of oxygen found in landfills, plastic can take more than 20 years to decompose. The other method
is incineration which creates harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases which
easily can get released into the atmosphere (Webb, Arnott, Crawford, Ivanova, 2012). However a
study conducted found that PET can undergo microbial degradation by Nocardia with help of the
esterase enzyme (Sharon Sharon, 2012). Although this is evidence of progress, currently there is no
commercial scale method capable of the biodegradation of PET (Webb,

Ken can do this by using I language instead of you language (Wood, 2012). By doing so, Ken would

The New Deal and the Civil Rights Legislation of the 1960 s
The New Deal of the 1930s and the civil rights legislation and movements of the 1960s were very
different in what they did, but shared a common goal of bettering the country when they were
introduced, and making the country better in the future. The New Deal of the 1930s and its programs
were able to help millions of Americans get their feet back on the ground after the Great Depression.
Civil rights legislation of the 1960s helped African Americans get the respect and equality they
deserved after slavery had been eradicated. Prior to the 1960s, there were a few attempts to pass civil
rights bills. During the early 1960s, many believed it was time to finally pass civil rights bills that
would make a serious impact on the country as a whole. The goal of civil rights legislation was to
completely desegregate the blacks and whites, and had a vision of peace of equality. Martin Luther
King Jr. wanted a demonstration, or protest, of the situation of the blacks and whites to be held in the
most segregated city in the United States, Birmingham, Alabama. The Birmingham March took place
between April and May of 1963. The protests and rallies were both peaceful and nonviolent. However,
the police got tired of the daily protests and arrested hundreds that they found to be responsible for
taking part in them and used unnecessary force, such as high pressured water hoses. As a result of
these protests, President Kennedy made an announcement speaking out against racism

fierce debate among scholars about when globalization began. Stated by Investopedia.com.
Economists argue globalization started with the earliest human migratory routes, while others view it
far more modern. The term itself, globalization has seen common use since the 80 s. I believe
globalization started in the post war era when the United States was seen as the most powerful country
in the world. Multinational corporations set off a swell of consequences, both very positive and
negative. Investopedia.com states, The unpredicted ease of travel around the globe and the
development of modern communications are used to support this view of globalization. Capital
flowing from country to country around the world has changed the way businesses increase in size and
power. Thefreedictionary defines industrial capital as Capital advanced to produce surplus value and

Owens Valley Summary
Kharl argues that in the case of the Sierra Nevada s Owens Valley, located approximately 250 miles
north Los Angeles, the valley s agricultural shareholders and the City of Los Angeles originally sought
an agreement that reserved sufficient water for valley residents to maintain their ranching life style
while concurrently exporting the valley s surplus to the soon to be developed San Fernando Valley.
Such an agreement would allow rural users to maintain their ranches while concurrently allowing Los
Angeles to grow. In 1913, as plans for the Los Angeles Aqueduct finally came to fruition with water

Religious Significance The Pantheon And The Dome Of The Rock

TA Ginny Reynolds, Wednesday 5pm
The Religious Significance the Pantheon and the Dome of the Rock Convey
Architecture comes with many significant meanings, including religious significance. The Pantheon,
built from 118 to 125 CE in Rome, Italy, was a temple made to worship the Roman gods and
goddesses. This temple is one of the most important buildings both in history and architecture,
influencing many other monuments with its form, such as The Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the
Rock, built from 687 to 692 CE, was the first great Islamic building. Located in Jerusalem, it is a
shrine still very significant to many religions, such as Judaism and Christianity, today. Though not
resembling each other in appearance, these buildings are extremely similar, in terms of religious
meaning. The Pantheon and the Dome of the Rock, through their own distinctive form and similar
location backgrounds, illuminate religion as the most important factor in each society, as these
monuments symbolize a sense of unification throughout the city. The Dome of the Rock and the
Pantheon are constructed similarly. The Dome of the Rock was even influenced by the Pantheon, built
on a domed central plan structure. While the two buildings look different in appearance, they have
similar forms. They both contain geometric structures. In the front, the Pantheon has a porch, with a
triangular top. Behind this porch is a cylinder base with a hemispherical dome

Global perspective on society
26 September 2017
Significant differences Filial Piety is a widespread custom belief that is prominent within a
confucianism community. The whole idea of filial piety is to teach younger generations to commence
with the service of parents; it proceeds to the service of the ruler (Jing 58). In a society, filial piety has
more than a function of simply teaching people to respect their elders: the ideals of Confucian s
teachings help to create certain social standards within a community. According to Jing, high ministers
and great officers exemplify [their people through] virtuous ways, and as long as none of their actions
[are] contrary to the right way [then] they can then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His texts claims that while love is what is chiefly rendered to the mother, and reverence is what is
chiefly rendered to the ruler, [both] of these things are given to the father. The belief of filial piety has
a clear distinction on a patriarchal society that emphasizes respect and praise towards a mature
generation. However, in Mill s The Racial Contract, Mills makes the point that people s social
discipline usually leans toward respecting the white race. As mentioned, the Racial Contract has asked
many people s perception on equal distribution of power by letting white people take advantage of the
status quo (Mills 40). The clear distinction between these two texts is clear: although both argue that
people pay their respects to anyone but themselves in a society, Jing makes it clear that the kindred
plays a role in exemplifying privilege whereas Mills argue that the privilege has already been
established due to European conquest. The real difference is that within the readings of filial piety, the
mandates of heaven are also required follow a certain guideline in which they serve as an honorary
example for their people (Jing 60). However, Mills explains that the whole social contract idea is that
people give up their rights to serve underneath people who are just as equal as them: the only
difference is that their countries were able to

The Presence Of Social Pressure And Stop Playing With Toys
The presence of social pressure to stop playing with toys featured most commonly among the
participants. They all specifically mentioned some form of conformity to social norms of growing up
(e.g., R27, 151 152; R33, 238 241; R46, 158 160; R51, 302 304; R57, 108 111; R59, 144 146). They
provided examples of alternative activities that were considered acceptable for adults, such as hanging
out with friends (e.g., R27, 103 104; R59, 72 73), and electronic games (e.g., R46, 158 160; R59, 79
80).
The pressure that participants felt to move on from playing with toys appeared to emerge either
internally, stemming from self identification as grown up (e.g., R33, 121 123; R46, 254 255; R51, 79;
R59, 55) or externally, through observation and imitation of peer behaviour (e.g., R46, 124 126; R59,
144 146) In a few instances, participants mentioned being explicitly told by peers that playing with
toys was no longer acceptable (e.g., R27, 188 190; R57, 108 111; R59, 71 72), although parents were
rarely cited as a source of pressure (e.g., R57, 114 115; R59, 140 143).
Participants with siblings highlighted the impact of these siblings on their cessation of play with toys.
Interestingly, participants with younger siblings tended to cite an internal process of social pressure,
where they were driven by a personal desire to appear older:
R27: ... you get to an age where if your sisters are playing with them and they are younger, you don t
really want to play the same things as

How Far A Projectile Travels Based On Its Angle
In this experiment, we are measuring the difference in how far a projectile travels based on its angle.
To use the mathematical model to find this, we must measure the initial velocity and the angle used to
launch the projectile. The independent variables in this case are the initial velocities and the angles,
while the dependent variable is the distance traveled by the projectile.
Not shown above are the cables attaching the projectile launcher to a LabQuest device to allow the
collection of data, which was then connected to a computer to show the data that was collected, and
the hand pump which applies pressure to launch the projectile. The model is not to scale. This setup
was chosen due to the need to measure the distances the projectiles were launched at during each trial.
The marker tape was used to see where the projectile, a small metal ball, landed so that its distance
could be measured easily. The blocker, the case the balls were kept in, had a foam bottom and was
used to prevent the projectiles from bouncing away from the trial area. The projectile launcher was
placed approximately one meter away from the blocker to allow the projectile to travel as far as
needed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The marker tape, along with a meter stick was used to measure the distance traveled by the ball at the
first bounce.
Using the LabQuest to measure the velocities the projectiles were launched at helped minimize error.
If the launch speed had been left uncontrolled, the results would have been inconsistent, as the
projectile could have been launched to an unreasonable distance compared to the controlled trials, and
our initial velocities would have been either too high or too low. Keeping our pressure used to launch
at 25 psi and watching the projectile launcher were both critical to achieving consistent

Analysis Of Richard Parker s The Last Animal
The last animal, Richard Parker, symbolizes Pi, his animal like instincts when he was stranded at sea,
as he must complete many tasks to survive which in the real world he would find very hard to do.
Richard Parker can symbolize many things, Pi himself and Pi s fears. Richard Parker represents Pi
himself, and his inner strength. In Mexico, when Richard Parker left Pi and is never to be seen again,
it shows that Richard Parker was only what Pi needed for strength and that he never was real. He also
represents Pi s fears, and how he overcomes all of his fears, mainly his major fear; death. The skills Pi
had learned at his father s zoo helped him face his fear of Richard Parker and in order to tame Richard
Parker, he pretends that he is at a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This time he had gave him a new start, and it helped Pi to equally grow and to expand as a person.
This is shown by the fact that Pi had left his vegetarianism, because if he wanted to survive, he had to
kill and eat fish. That is not it though, as he also had to learn how to take care of himself and survive
on his own since his parents were not on the lifeboat with him. Although in the moment this may have
been hard for Pi to do, but in the end it only had a positive outcome on him. After his journey was
over, he was a much more respecting, thankful, stronger more mature person. The cargo ship, the
Tsimtsum, is also symbolic. The family was forced to Canada from India due to government issues.
All the animals from the zoo are put on the ship, the family is excited, and all is well. The ship leaves
and Pi is enjoying the journey so far, as everyone is. At the beginning the ship is smooth sailing, until
the devastating storm comes and the ship sinks. The Tsimtsum sinking is symbolic of Pi s life. When
Pi was stranded out in the ocean all alone, it was taking a great toll on him emotionally, Pi just stops
everything and takes a break, he says; I looked out at the empty horizon. There was so much water.
And I was all alone. All alone. I burst into hot tears. I buried my face in my crossed arms and sobbed.
My situation was patently hopeless (Martel 187). His life was great, he was happy, nothing was

The Dragon As A Symbol Of Strength, Power, And Good Luck
Every culture throughout the world has their own unique stories of their beginnings and histories, their
own mythologies. In these mythologies there are stories of creations, destruction s, Gods, Goddesses,
heroes, villains, features, and creatures. That last category being one that enraptures them all. The tales
of mythological creatures are ones that have captivated the masses since the beginning. Children are
told stories of the wonderful, and sometimes fearsome, creatures that dominate the world of
mythology. Of all those many creatures, one of the creatures spread through nearly all cultures, in
some form or another, good or bad, is the dragon. In the lands of the East the dragon is often seen as a
symbol of strength, power, and good luck (Wu, 2015), in the Western lands the dragon is often seen as
the opposite, it s seen as destruction and chaos, bringing nothing but terror and bad luck. Which ever
version of the dragon one chooses to believe in, and despite the things children are led to believe in
their bedtime stories, some dragons are more then just monsters that knights slay to save the princess.
Dragons, in their various forms, represent a plethora of things to many different cultures around the
world. This paper will talk about what dragons are, what they mean to the Chinese, Slavic, and Celtic
cultures, their part in the history of those cultures along with the world, and how they continue to
captivate the imagination and teach the people of today. The term

Preventing Obesity among School Children through Healthier...
Preventing Obesity Among School Children through Healthier School Meals
Obesity and overweight are among the pressing health problems among children and adolescents in
the developed world.
Obesity refers to an excess amount of body fat whereas overweight can be measured by the BMI index
or height weight ratio.
According to the WHO (2012), obesity and overweight are the fifth largest risk for global deaths.
Introduction
Obesity and overweight among children and adolescents has increased to more than a third of children
and adolescents (CDC, 2012).
Children and adolescents consume 700 to 1000 more calories per day than required (NCCOR, 2012).
School lunches mostly consist of fried and salty foods, which has prompted ex military officers to call
for legislation on healthy school lunches (Spillius, 2010).
Problem Identification
Such children are likely to have higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in later years (CDC,
2012).
Obesity in children and adolescents can lead to greater susceptibility to the following in later years:
Asthma
High blood pressure
Bone and joint problems
Sleep apnea
Low self esteem
Problem Identification
Children and adolescents often resort to unhealthy ways of controlling weight including: Crash diets
Binge eating, leading to bulimia nervosa Starvation Drugs, e.g. cocaine Laxatives
Hence, there is a need to develop healthy ways of controlling obesity in children.

My Cultural Identity Essay examples
My culture identity, as I know it as is African American. My culture can be seen in food, literature,
religion, language, the community, family structure, the individual, music, dance, art, and could be
summed up as the symbolic level. Symbolic, because faith plays a major role in our daily lives
through song, prayer, praise and worship. When I m happy I rely on my faith, same as when I m sad,
for I know things will get better as they have before. There are different disciplines within the
humanities, but there is one that I feel that has influenced my cultural identity the most...music. I say
music because from the start music told my culture s history; informed others about deeds or events
that had taken place, also, music was and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Now, this is what you call a celebration, each year is exciting more and more. I ve met a variety of

Self-Defense Legislation
Self defense is the right for an individual to use necessary force in order to defend oneself against an
unlawful force of another. Therefore, an act that is typically depicted as a crime is not punishable
under these circumstances. Joycelyn M. Pollock (2013) pointed out that, the right to protect oneself,
one s family, and one s castle is a time honored right that existed before the common law and was
recognized by it (P.101). Under common law, a criminal charge depended upon a showing that the
defendant believed force was necessary in order for self protection, upon reasonable grounds, the
threat was forthcoming, and the force was not excessively used (Pollock, 2013, 102). Today, self
defense elements are different in each state. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Correspondingly, in some statues an agency cannot arrest an individual for the use of force unless the
force used was determined unlawful. Therefore, the Stand your Ground laws have thoroughly
extended self defense rights. Some states contain Make My Day laws, which allow the use of deadly
force for the protection of property when an individual believes that force is necessary to prevent a
criminal felony (Pollock, 2013, 106). An individual is also allowed to use reasonable force even if the
user does not feel an immediate threat but reasonably believes a crime will occur. Originally, case law
prohibited the use of weapons due to the possibility of hurting innocent individuals such as a police
officer trying to legally enter the premises. Nevertheless, Stand your Ground laws have allowed the
use of deadly force in order to protect against all possible felonies. The extension and initiation of
various self defense laws have caused nationwide controversy. Advocates state that law abiding
individuals should be allowed to protect themselves unlawful force without the possibility of being
criminally or civilly charged. Correspondingly, the Second Amendment to the United States
Constitution grants the federal right to bear arms regardless of militia stature and upholds the natural
rights of self defense. Likewise, legislators argue that individuals visiting or residing in the United
States contain the right to remain secure in

Pluto s Abuse In The Black Cat
6. The main character eventually mistreats the cat because of his alcoholic addiction and Pluto
attacking him. On page 2, it reads, One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my
haunts about town, I fancied that the cat avoided my presence. I seized him; when, in his fright at my
violence, he inflicted a slight wound upon my hand with his teeth. Initially, Pluto began to realize the
main character s alcohol consumption was changing him as a person so he was trying to keep his
distance. Consequently, when the narrator tries to pick Pluto up, Pluto hurts the main character with
his teeth. This action angers the storyteller, which causes his abuse towards the cat. Although he did

In the story, the narrator says perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart one of
the divisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of Man. He defines
perverseness as an unfathomable impulse of the soul that gives direction to man and causes one to kill.
I do agree with his definition because perverseness is like a conscience. The main character is saying
how perverseness is an inner guide or feeling that causes one to do the right thing or the wrong thing.
In my opinion, like a conscience, perverseness is a difficult term to explain and is not fully
understood. In addition, I do agree it is human nature. The reason why we have perverseness is so we
can distinguish right from wrong. Everyone in the world has it, though, it is all dependent on the
person regarding whether they want to listen to it or

Diffusion Of Displacement Essay
Empirical evidence regarding displacement and diffusion of benefits
A number of reviews and studies of displacement studies have been conducted since 1990. The first
critical examination of displacement was produced by Cornish and Clarke in 1987, and the result
showed that overall research stated that displacement is not inevitable, which is not compatible with
the traditional criminology predictions (Cornish and Clarke, 1987). In 1990, Barr and Pease examined
more research and found out that the evidence witch supported displacement hypothesis was little.
They suggested that it is difficult to distinguish displacement from natural offender behavior.
Moreover, they also suggested that some forms of displacement could be beneficial, i.e., less harmful
crime types (Barr and Pease, 1990). This is the similar idea of benign displacement.
Eck made a systematic review of the 33 empirical research and studies on displacement and suggested
that there is more reason to expect no displacement than a great deal ... Show more content on

They examined 102 evaluations of situationally focused crime prevention projects and evaluated 574

analytical approach, including the gross effect (GE), net effect (NE), the total net effect (TNE), and
the weighted displacement quotient (WDQ) (Bowers and Johnson, 2003; Clarke and Eck, 2005). They
found that the possibility of diffusion of benefits (27%) was even a little bit greater than the possibility
of displacement (26%). This provided the consistent support for the argument that crime did not
simply relocate because of the situational intervention, however, its opposite, the diffusion of benefit
was more likely to happen. Moreover, even though displacement could happen in some situation,
crimes tended to be less than before, so the initiatives were surely

Benjamin Franklin s Autobiography
Benjamin Franklin is an iconic figure in history, primarily for his many inventions. Franklin also
wrote an autobiography about his life, there is a difference between a biography and an autobiography.
Biographies are written by someone who is writing about another person s life. An autobiography, on
the other hand, is a person writing about their own life. Usually in an autobiography, the writer will
talk about his or her life, including their childhood, family, and schooling. The writer will also usually
talk about their parents, and their marriage. Benjamin Franklin s autobiography is very different, he
starts off by saying dear son , which leads the reader to believe that it is a normal autobiography. Once

He also briefly talks about his childhood life, but even then he still talks about how good he was and
how his friends respected him so much. Franklin also very briefly writes how he met the love of his
life in Philadelphia, then he doesn t really write much about dating the love of his life, which you
would think being an autobiography he would talk more about her. When the Governor of
Philadelphia wanted Franklin to go to London for starting a printing business he basically told his love
to marry another (Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin). Franklin s autobiography tells about his
many great accomplishments but very little about his personal life. When he does talk about his
personal life though, he always makes sure that even when he describes one of his family members or
a childhood memory Franklin writes about how good he was. Franklin also likes to portray himself as
the icon of the American dream, for example, Franklin emphasizes how vital it is for creditors to
support fledgling entrepreneurs; and so these stories illustrate, by implication, the importance of the
reader s willingness to credit Franklin s representations of the American experience ( Vassar

The Reading I Chose Is Animal Liberation, By Peter Singer
The reading I chose is Animal Liberation, by Peter Singer. Peter Singer argues against animals cruelty,
discrimination, and animals equal rights. Singer uses philosophy to teach and educate others on his
point of view. Singer points out that animals have rights too and supports animals just like he does
with Black Liberation, Gay Liberation, and Women Liberation. Singer states, It is a demand for a
complete change in our attitudes to nonhumans. It is a demand that we cease to regard the exploitation
of other species as natural and inevitable, and that, instead, we see it as a continuing moral outrage.
(pg.208) He supports the equal treatment of animals just like women did in changing societies views
of work place and labor. Comparing Practical Ethics in the book with other stories, Singer tells the

Poverty In Alex And Morgan s Life
Poverty is a serious topic that most people tend to feel to uncomfortable to acknowledge. Only those
who have lived it or are living it know what it is really like, meanwhile others have no idea. Some
people lived their entire lives like this, others only just beginning, all know how difficult it is. Much of
the time, people scrounge for food, a job, some shelter, and money. Alex and Morgan have been living
an easygoing lifestyle up until the day they decided to take the challenge of going into poverty for

For example when Morgan had his wrist hurt, he was torn at the subject. He could ve gone to the

change his mind about going to get his wrist checked out. This shows that he cared about the fact that
his fiancee wouldn t have to be on nerves about not having enough money to purchase some basic
essentials. Another example is when the children came over. The two were worried about trying to
attempt at having a fun time for the kids, but within the next few days they have decided to go to the
movie theatre for entertainment. Morgan ended up spending around $50 on the teenagers and Alex
was angry at the fact that he do this; knowing that they couldn t afford anything anymore all due to the
fact that Morgan can t say no, causing them to argue right then and there. This shows that Alex is very
responsible and wouldn t forget the things anyone tell her, meanwhile Morgan just like to please
people. A third example would be Alex s concern for the apartment. Somewhere around the ten day

anything, knowing that the ants were in the building. This made Alex realize how dull the apartment
was and want to go get furniture. Luckily they found a charity that sells furniture and clothing that is

Theme Of Patriarchy In The Epic Of Gilgamesh
For centuries, books, television shows, even beloved childhood movies have subtly reinforced the
social construct of patriarchy. Classic movies such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty follow the
typical story line of a damsel in distress, followed by a heroic man coming to her rescue. This
conception of a male focused storyline is nothing new and is an aspect that constitutes patriarchy,
which has existed since the advent of agriculture and has persisted throughout the centuries. In fact,
patriarchy was a major theme that was reinforced in the first story ever recovered; The Epic of
Gilgamesh was written as early as 2000 BC in Mesopotamia and is loosely based on the Sumerian
king, Gilgamesh. The story tells of Gilgamesh s adventures with his friend Enkidu as they conquer
everything from other men to the Bull of Heaven. Throughout the story, patriarchy is heavily
reinforced. Although the driving force behind patriarchy is personal attainment of security and status,
a number of objectively undesirable events result such as the subjugation of women and societies that
value control and dominance. The narrator reinforces different aspects of patriarchy in The Epic of
Gilgamesh by portraying men in a good light and women in a bad one, focusing society around males,
withholding agency from female females, normalizing violence, and creating the need for unequal
relationships between men and women.
The narrator of this epic consistently reinforced the stereotypical gender roles and

Summary Of The Night Odyssey
Lost It was the summer of 1998; I was pregnant with my second child, when my two year old son, my
husband, my brother Vladimir, his girlfriend Nicole, two other couples and I went on vacation to

ones with a child, the rest of the group treated my son like an alien whose task was to turn the nightly
rest upside down, so the banned us to the only bedroom in the first floor. In hindsight, it was the best
room of the whole house, due to the heat which emanated at night heavily from the attic rooms and
made breathing difficult. The area was beautiful, green hills everywhere; the few houses looked like
they were put into the lush meadows by a creative behemoth. Although you could not see the ocean,

was to experience how to settle for rent, food, and bills while working in minimum salary. The idea of
this project came in mind when she discussed with Lewis Lapham, the editor of Harper s, about future
articles in magazines and then asked How does anyone live on the wages available to the unskilled?
How, in particular, we wondered, were the roughly four million women about to be booted into the

Kirksville Library Volunteers Case
Introduction to Organization and Environment In regards to the Kirksville Library Volunteers Case,
this is a medium sized public library located in a large, southern city. Non profit. Funding. In order for
the library to function beyond the limits of its normal paid staff, the library relies on a large volunteer
reserve of 75 volunteers.
This library functions like many other libraries in its input, throughput, and output. It is most likely a
non profit organization that is funded by sources such as taxes, grants, and private benefactors. The
library also likely runs on a quarterly budget if not a yearly budget and it does not often have to
change how things are done. Because of this, the library by definition falls into a placid environment.

Volunteers would be guaranteed projects and tasks to do during their shift. In this situation there
would only be one employee managing the 75 volunteers, again this may be too much for one person.
Managing a lot of individuals can cause frustration for the selected employee who is managing the
volunteers, thus disturbing morale in the workplace.
The most practical solution for this management case would be to choose three to four serious, eligible
and qualified volunteers to become Volunteer Coordinators. Each Volunteer Coordinator would be
assigned to one section of the library e.g. circulation, technical services, or outreach and so on. They
would be liaising with staff from the designated section, creating a list of projects and tasks that could
be fulfilled by the volunteer. Previous communication issues would more than likely be solved
between staff and volunteer coordinators.
The Volunteer Coordinators would then select which category of the library volunteers would work,
dividing them up evenly as possible. A trusting relationship will begin to form after the volunteer
works in their designated section. One disadvantage of this arrangement could be that

Linguistics and Child
.Introduction
Language is a human tendency to communicate with others and this could underlie the emergence of
language. Montessori said, To talk is in the nature of man. Humans needed language in order to
communicate, and soon, the powers that come with language were revealed. The evolution of the
human language began when communication was done through pictograms or pictures and drawings.
It then developed into ideograms when pictures began to turn into symbols. Later, these symbols
became words, words involved letters, vowels emerged, one symbol came to represent one sound, an
alphabet was created, and then came the alphabet we now use today. And just as language evolved
hundreds of thousands of years ago, it also changes with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Montessori Prepared Environment | | | |
|
The prepared environment is Maria Montessori s concept that the environment can be designed to
facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child. In the prepared environment,
there is a variety of activity as well as a great deal of movement. In a preschool classroom, for
example, a three year old may be washing clothes by hand while a four year old nearby is composing
words and phrases with letters known as the movable alphabet, and a five year old is performing
multiplication using a specially designed set of beads. In an elementary classroom, a small group of
six to nine year old children may be using a timeline to learn about extinct animals while another child
chooses to work alone, analyzing a poem using special grammar symbols. Sometimes an entire class
may be involved in a group activity, such as storytelling, singing, or movement. In the calm, ordered
space of the Montessori prepared environment, children work on activities of their own choice at their
own pace. They experience a blend of freedom and self discipline in a place especially designed to
meet their developmental needs

The Effects Of Salmon Farming On The Salmon Population Essay
Introduction
Fish, one of our most important sources of high quality protein, provides some 16% of the animal
protein consumed by the world s population, (Food Agriculture Organization, FAO, of the United
Nations, 1997). Our responses towards a growing demand for fish led to a boom in the salmon
farming industry (Naylor, et al., 1998). Unfortunately, the consequences of salmon farming outweigh
the value that comes with it. Even though salmon farming is steadily becoming more sustainable,
salmon farming is not a suitable and environmentally sound way of producing food due to the
negative issues salmon farming has caused in the environment, the salmon population, and the health
of humans.
Salmon farming effects to wild salmon population
Scientists of various fields have found that escaped salmon from fisheries have negatively impacted
the salmon population. The gradual increase of salmon farming has led to a higher rate of escaped
salmon reaching local ecosystems. As farmed salmon escape through weather events, poor
containment, careless handling, etc. the local ecology changes dramatically. In McGinnity s study
(2003), farmed salmon have been found to breed poorly and have difficulty surviving in comparison
to wild salmon. The study was carried out in Western Ireland and highlighted the behavioral
differences between wild salmon against various generations of hybrid salmon. It was found that
farmed salmon and hybrid salmon (various mixed farmed wild breeds) carry the

Odysseus Vs. Epic Of Gilgamesh

20 Oct. 2017 Paper Topic One: Odysseus vs. Gilgamesh
Sometimes it only takes a few seemingly small flaws to determine if one will live a lifetime of
adversity, and this appears to be the case for both Odysseus in Homer s Odyssey and Gilgamesh in the
Epic of Gilgamesh. Unlike what their grand titles may suggest, these ancient heroes were by no means
perfect people, and, if anything, it would be more realistic to attribute the concept of imperfection with
them instead. However, that is not suggesting that heroism equates to imperfection, but rather that
these heroes have earned their titles from their battles with their imperfections. In the introduction of
the Epic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Gilgamesh Tb.I P5.) Odysseus, however, was very different from Gilgamesh in terms of his ruling
style. While Gilgamesh had exercised harsh and unjustified rule, Odysseus had difficulties controlling
and disciplining his crewmen. Throughout Odysseus journey home, on the boat given to him by the
Phaeacian King Alcinous, there were many instances where the crewmen did not follow his
leadership, made their own decisions, and even talked back to him. For example, whilst Odysseus and
his crewmen approached the island of the Sun god Helios, he reminded them of Circe s dangerous
prophecy regarding the temptations of Helios island. Thus, he ordered his men to sail forward (Homer,
Od. 12.294 299); however, one seaman, Eurylochus, pleaded him to let them stop for the night and
rest; the rest of the crewmen agreed with Eurylochus cheerfully, to which Odysseus gave in and
allowed them to rest one night, if only they all promised not to harm Helios cattle. (Homer, Od.
12.328 329) Under better authority, the crewmen would not have pleaded to their leader, nor would
their leader have given in so easily; however, Odysseus was easily manipulated and lacked the
necessary authoritative skill. Unfortunately, this was neither his only nor greatest flaw. Actually,
Odysseus greatest known flaw is what is known as hubris, and it is often described as a sense of
excessive pride or defiance of the gods. Odysseus greatest show of hubris occurred on the

Renewable Sources Of Energy And Energy
The world today is a place of rapid progress and scientific advancement, which has been going strong
for the last few decades. This period will gradually begin to slow down and eventually stop altogether
because the world will, quite literally, run out of fuel. Right now, the majority of all the energy used in
the day to day lives and operations of the entire world population are nonrenewable. This energy is
created from the fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas. Fossil fuels are still cheap and high in
supply, but the rate at which we are consuming them, which is only expected to increase, vastly
exceeds the rate at which they regenerate. This creates the aforementioned problem of mankind
running out of the required natural resources to fuel its own energy demands. The only solution to this
problem that is possible, is to begin placing more influence renewable sources of energy and doing so
as soon as possible. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal
power. Each of these are insignificant alone, but as a group they become a viable alternative to
nonrenewable energy sources. Together, they have the potential to replace the fossil fuels as our
primary provider of energy. Although there are many that argue against the use of renewable energy it
is vital that the United States government makes the implementation and widespread use of renewable
energy sources mandatory.
Experts have known and understood that nonrenewable energy sources

Indigenous People In Canada Essay
Terminology: Different terminology is used to describe groups of people. In Canada it had been
commonly accepted to say Aboriginal or First Nations people; however, nowadays, the term
Indigenous is more appropriate. Indigenous people are those, living on Canadian territories before
Europeans arrival. The term includes First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. All these groups have a unique
culture, languages, and beliefs.
History: Indigenous communities have existed for thousands of years on the Canadian territories.
They lived as independent nations, with different degrees of socio cultural, political and economic
complexity. After European came, their interactions were divided into four periods: first mutual
respect, second first conflicts, third ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, accordingly to Maldonado, Having an Indian status does not necessarily mean free
universities and no taxes (lecture, November 15, 2016). The Canadian s stereotypes about Indigenous
people and their favorable position in the society is based on the misunderstanding and leads to the
discrimination they are still facing nowadays. Although Canada s bill of rights were created in 1960
and gave people the right for equality, liberty, and freedom of speech and religion, even the fact of
existence of Residential Schools makes it obvious that Ingenious people were still harshly
discriminated. Those schools, where children were kept away from their families and taught that their
culture was evil, that their parents were pagans, that their identity was primitive, existed till 1996 and
have been teaching approximately 150,000 First Nation, Inuit and Metis children (lecture, November
15, 2016). Residential School is an example of the discrimination against Aboriginals, trial to diminish
the culture, language and family connections of the whole nation. The formation of The Truth and
Reconciliation Commission of Canada was an essential step for the Government in order to renew the
positive relationships with Indigenous people. This commission worked on revealing the truth about
the Residential Schools and informing about it all Canadians. I believe that creating such programs is
an important part of history of social policy in Canada as it fosters positive relationships between
different groups of

  • 2. What Is The Epic Of Gilgamesh Flood stories are a part of most ancient civilizations throughout the whole world. Yet arguably the most well known is the story of Noah and the Ark. Today I am going to go over the other main flood stories most closely related with the former, and show proof that out of the numerous flood narratives, this is the most factual and realistic of all of them. First off we have the ancient Mesopotamian narrative Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh is told a story by, an immortal man, that long ago the gods had decided to destroy the whole world by sending a flood. Upon hearing this information the man Utanapishtim was able to build a giant ship that he stored all different species of creatures on, and even some craftsmen for after the flood. Historians ... Yet if it were a copy of such a story, why would all of the dimensions for the ship be factually checked out as stable and realistic, the ability for caring and keeping alive all of the animals mentioned in both stories, and that neither the Sumerians or the Israelites were known for their nautical skills. Sumerians were the first to write the flood account in cuneiform then the Akkadian s carried it on, there were two types of dialects Babylonian and Assyrian and they each had their own version of the flood story. This shows that they were recounting the stories that they have been told, writing it in their own style. Scholars of the Christian faith believe that the recounting of the Noah s flood was told orally and passed down until Moses eventually wrote it to be apart of the bible. So this makes the origins of the bible older then all of the other flood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jack Rapke Yesterday, I was granted the opportunity, as a New York Film, Academy alumni , to attend a Q A given by producer, Jack Rapke, preceded by a screening of his newest film, The Walk which is based on a true story. The movie stars Joseph Gordon Levitt (whom Rapke called Joe ) who plays French tightrope walker Phillippe Petit who in 1974, strung a rope connecting the buildings of the world trade center then tightrope walked across it. The movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis (who Rapke called Bob ), starred Joseph Gordon Levitt, who, much to my surprise, did all of his own stunts and speaks fluent French. His acting performance paired with the fact that he had to switch off speaking French and speaking English with a French accent while also balancing tediously on a tightrope was nothing short of astounding. Even with an all star cast and crew, the movie flopped at the box office. After the movie and before the Q A, they set up the lights and the cameras, but not just for the guest speaker. One of the more unusual truths I learned was that talent agents for actors are petrified of their clients. No one wants to break the tough news to one another and agents are no exception. Experiential Learning CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Knowledge results from the combination of grasping (observation) and transforming reflections into action (concrete experience) (Kolb, 1894). Nursing is a practice profession. Clinical experience in the clinical setting is the integral part of the total education process for nursing students. (Estrella Cuarezma Sanchez, 1998) The clinical exposure of a student nurse is an experience that is not to be taken for granted. It is as important (if not more so) than the classroom lectures. In the field, the student nurse is allowed to experience dealing with actual patients and witnessing medical cases first hand. Also, these hospitals are equipped with well maintained facilities, highly technologic equipment and complete medical supplies. However, there are also disadvantages. Limited assignments are given to student nurses because they make sure they give quality care to patients due to patient s payment for services rendered. There are strict norms associated with providing health care interventions. Herewith, staffs nurses have significant liability to their patients. They can not afford to make mistakes. It has been a crucial part to our survival and well being as a human race. Nowadays fishing is not only done for food, it has also become a recreational activity. With the large affect fishing has on our society isn t it important we regulate what we do with the fish? Fishing regulations are used to protect what we do with the fish and the limits we have. Undoubtedly, if we continue this pattern of wastefulness with our ocean s resources there will be consequences. Many statistics and facts back this up. Four organizational structures are the most common to all organizations, namely: hierarchical, flat, matrix and networked. The hierarchical structure comprises of a top level management and keeps getting segmented to different levels depending on the work that has to be done. The decision making is done by the topmost level management in the structure while the lower level work force follows the rules made by their seniors. In the FBI case, it was their lack of information among departments that caused the ineffectiveness of its performance. In the article Who killed the Virtual Case File? it is clearly identified that the gaps in information made it difficult to solve issues in crime and terrorism. Though the senior management in both the company cultures showed failure in embracing technology for example in the case of FBI paper work was followed instead of using electronic documentation, FBI also failed to identify the use of database in a smart and effective manner to store and share information securely among departments. This was however not the case with Kodak. It was the reluctance of senior management to accept the new technology though they identified the new horizon of business identified by them. Though Kodak had flaws with decision making by its senior management, they have acted upon not making hierarchical structure as their organization s framework. Another article called Lessons from the past by Jessica Lipnack and Jeffrey Stamps on Turning Hierarchy on its Side explains the famous Pizza organization of Eastman Kodak. Some believe that if the market is allowed to do its thing unprohibited and without government interference, then resources will be allocated efficiently, equilibrium will be found, and so on... However, this is not always possible. Of course, government control is not perfect either. Thus, it would seem that at times the market may be more appropriate than the government; other times the government may be needed because the market is not able to function properly; and other times a combination of the two working in unison may provide the best and most effective and efficient answers. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Property rights that would lead to efficient allocations have four main characteristics: universality, exclusivity, transferability, and enforceability. Universality is when all resources are privately owned and the entitlements are specified. Exclusivity refers to the fact that all benefits and costs due to owning and using the resource should be directed solely at the owner. Transferability refers to the fact that all property rights should be transferable from one owner to another in voluntary exchange. And finally, enforceability simply means that all property rights should be secure from involuntary seizure by others. With all of these in place, one would certainly use a resource efficiently because a decline in the value of the resource would represent a personal loss. Furthermore, individuals will only buy as much of something so that the marginal cost is equal to the marginal benefit that they receive from purchasing it. And thus, with these defined property rights in place the market indeed would prevail. Environmental problems are one important class of circumstances in which the market economic system is not always efficient. • 9. The Principle Of Respect For Patient Autonomy Essay Over the past several decades, the principle of respect for patient autonomy has assumed a central place in health care. Indeed, respect for the self determining decisions or interests of patients now is an underlying consideration for most professional codes of practice and also patient codes of rights (Cruess Cruess, 2008; MacLeod, Wilson Malpas, 2012). The dilemma now is that fear of losing autonomy or dignity during the dying process could lead some patients to request a hastened death. In a study investigating physician attitudes and behaviors when utilizing end of life decisions that hastened death, researchers found physicians who would submit to a patient s request for an assisted death stated that respect for the patient s autonomy was important in their decision making (Fried, Stein, O Sullivan, Brock, Novack, 1993). Physicians who would not comply with a patient s request for an assisted death agreed that respect for autonomy was significant but instead citing other factors such as ethical and legal concerns (Fried et al., 1993). Expenditures Before the passing of the new law, gravely ill Canadians were forced to travel to Switzerland for a medically assisted death. The cost $20,000 to $30,000 when accounting for flights and accommodation puts this option out of reach for most Canadians. Similar to helping the sick, there is little to no ethical dilemmas when it comes to being eco friendly. Since the SODIS method has some environmentally based drawbacks, it could be harmful to the environment and it will present some moral concern when it comes to recommending the technology. The SODIS method uses plastic PET water bottles to help disinfect the water. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and also referred to as polyester, is a common plastic used in plastic bottles for water, soft drinks, juice and many other common items (American Chemistry Council, 1988). The production of plastics, its frequent and disposable role and the hazards it poses once it needs to be disposed of has made the use of plastic an environmental drawback to the SODIS method. PET can be reused but only to a certain extent. PET bottles should be replaced within 6 to 12 months and should no longer be used if they get scratched or show signs of wear (SODIS, 2009). When it comes to the disposal of the bottle, there are two methods each with its own drawbacks. The first method, landfills use up lots of space which could be better used. Also, due to the lack of oxygen found in landfills, plastic can take more than 20 years to decompose. The other method is incineration which creates harmful compounds such as carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases which easily can get released into the atmosphere (Webb, Arnott, Crawford, Ivanova, 2012). However a study conducted found that PET can undergo microbial degradation by Nocardia with help of the esterase enzyme (Sharon Sharon, 2012). The New Deal and the Civil Rights Legislation of the 1960 s The New Deal of the 1930s and the civil rights legislation and movements of the 1960s were very different in what they did, but shared a common goal of bettering the country when they were introduced, and making the country better in the future. The New Deal of the 1930s and its programs were able to help millions of Americans get their feet back on the ground after the Great Depression. Civil rights legislation of the 1960s helped African Americans get the respect and equality they deserved after slavery had been eradicated. Prior to the 1960s, there were a few attempts to pass civil rights bills. During the early 1960s, many believed it was time to finally pass civil rights bills that would make a serious impact on the country as a whole. The goal of civil rights legislation was to completely desegregate the blacks and whites, and had a vision of peace of equality. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted a demonstration, or protest, of the situation of the blacks and whites to be held in the most segregated city in the United States, Birmingham, Alabama. The Birmingham March took place between April and May of 1963. The protests and rallies were both peaceful and nonviolent. Such an agreement would allow rural users to maintain their ranches while concurrently allowing Los Angeles to grow. In 1913, as plans for the Los Angeles Aqueduct finally came to fruition with water flowing from the valley to the basin, years of effort ended with both parties unable to agree to an acceptable division of those waters with the ... Under the terms of the document, California receives the largest share, but with Southern California s exploding population, this will be increasingly inadequate. Absent changes in both urban and agricultural use patterns, the deficit will only grow and further stress the state s political and economic systems. • 19. Religious Significance The Pantheon And The Dome Of The Rock Kathryn Shim November 24, 2015 Professor Moser TA Ginny Reynolds, Wednesday 5pm The Religious Significance the Pantheon and the Dome of the Rock Convey Architecture comes with many significant meanings, including religious significance. The Pantheon, built from 118 to 125 CE in Rome, Italy, was a temple made to worship the Roman gods and goddesses. This temple is one of the most important buildings both in history and architecture, influencing many other monuments with its form, such as The Dome of the Rock. The Dome of the Rock, built from 687 to 692 CE, was the first great Islamic building. Located in Jerusalem, it is a shrine still very significant to many religions, such as Judaism and Christianity, today. Though not resembling each other in appearance, these buildings are extremely similar, in terms of religious meaning. The Pantheon and the Dome of the Rock, through their own distinctive form and similar location backgrounds, illuminate religion as the most important factor in each society, as these monuments symbolize a sense of unification throughout the city. The Dome of the Rock and the Pantheon are constructed similarly. The Dome of the Rock was even influenced by the Pantheon, built on a domed central plan structure. While the two buildings look different in appearance, they have similar forms. They both contain geometric structures. In the front, the Pantheon has a porch, with a triangular top. Behind this porch is a cylinder base with a hemispherical dome ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Essay On Filial Piety YoungHyun Lee Rebecca Ehrenwirth Global perspective on society 26 September 2017 Significant differences Filial Piety is a widespread custom belief that is prominent within a confucianism community. The whole idea of filial piety is to teach younger generations to commence with the service of parents; it proceeds to the service of the ruler (Jing 58). In a society, filial piety has more than a function of simply teaching people to respect their elders: the ideals of Confucian s teachings help to create certain social standards within a community. According to Jing, high ministers and great officers exemplify [their people through] virtuous ways, and as long as none of their actions [are] contrary to the right way [then] they can then ... His texts claims that while love is what is chiefly rendered to the mother, and reverence is what is chiefly rendered to the ruler, [both] of these things are given to the father. The belief of filial piety has a clear distinction on a patriarchal society that emphasizes respect and praise towards a mature generation. However, in Mill s The Racial Contract, Mills makes the point that people s social discipline usually leans toward respecting the white race. As mentioned, the Racial Contract has asked many people s perception on equal distribution of power by letting white people take advantage of the status quo (Mills 40). The clear distinction between these two texts is clear: although both argue that people pay their respects to anyone but themselves in a society, Jing makes it clear that the kindred plays a role in exemplifying privilege whereas Mills argue that the privilege has already been established due to European conquest. The real difference is that within the readings of filial piety, the mandates of heaven are also required follow a certain guideline in which they serve as an honorary example for their people (Jing 60). However, Mills explains that the whole social contract idea is that people give up their rights to serve underneath people who are just as equal as them: the only difference is that their countries were able to ... They all specifically mentioned some form of conformity to social norms of growing up (e.g., R27, 151 152; R33, 238 241; R46, 158 160; R51, 302 304; R57, 108 111; R59, 144 146). They provided examples of alternative activities that were considered acceptable for adults, such as hanging out with friends (e.g., R27, 103 104; R59, 72 73), and electronic games (e.g., R46, 158 160; R59, 79 80). The pressure that participants felt to move on from playing with toys appeared to emerge either internally, stemming from self identification as grown up (e.g., R33, 121 123; R46, 254 255; R51, 79; R59, 55) or externally, through observation and imitation of peer behaviour (e.g., R46, 124 126; R59, 144 146) In a few instances, participants mentioned being explicitly told by peers that playing with toys was no longer acceptable (e.g., R27, 188 190; R57, 108 111; R59, 71 72), although parents were rarely cited as a source of pressure (e.g., R57, 114 115; R59, 140 143). Participants with siblings highlighted the impact of these siblings on their cessation of play with toys. Interestingly, participants with younger siblings tended to cite an internal process of social pressure, where they were driven by a personal desire to appear older: R27: ... you get to an age where if your sisters are playing with them and they are younger, you don t really want to play the same things as ... • 22. How Far A Projectile Travels Based On Its Angle In this experiment, we are measuring the difference in how far a projectile travels based on its angle. To use the mathematical model to find this, we must measure the initial velocity and the angle used to launch the projectile. The independent variables in this case are the initial velocities and the angles, while the dependent variable is the distance traveled by the projectile. Not shown above are the cables attaching the projectile launcher to a LabQuest device to allow the collection of data, which was then connected to a computer to show the data that was collected, and the hand pump which applies pressure to launch the projectile. The model is not to scale. This setup was chosen due to the need to measure the distances the projectiles were launched at during each trial. The marker tape was used to see where the projectile, a small metal ball, landed so that its distance could be measured easily. The blocker, the case the balls were kept in, had a foam bottom and was used to prevent the projectiles from bouncing away from the trial area. The tales of mythological creatures are ones that have captivated the masses since the beginning. Children are told stories of the wonderful, and sometimes fearsome, creatures that dominate the world of mythology. Of all those many creatures, one of the creatures spread through nearly all cultures, in some form or another, good or bad, is the dragon. In the lands of the East the dragon is often seen as a symbol of strength, power, and good luck (Wu, 2015), in the Western lands the dragon is often seen as the opposite, it s seen as destruction and chaos, bringing nothing but terror and bad luck. Which ever version of the dragon one chooses to believe in, and despite the things children are led to believe in their bedtime stories, some dragons are more then just monsters that knights slay to save the princess. Pollock (2013) pointed out that, the right to protect oneself, one s family, and one s castle is a time honored right that existed before the common law and was recognized by it (P.101). Under common law, a criminal charge depended upon a showing that the defendant believed force was necessary in order for self protection, upon reasonable grounds, the threat was forthcoming, and the force was not excessively used (Pollock, 2013, 102). The first critical examination of displacement was produced by Cornish and Clarke in 1987, and the result showed that overall research stated that displacement is not inevitable, which is not compatible with the traditional criminology predictions (Cornish and Clarke, 1987). In 1990, Barr and Pease examined more research and found out that the evidence witch supported displacement hypothesis was little. They suggested that it is difficult to distinguish displacement from natural offender behavior. Moreover, they also suggested that some forms of displacement could be beneficial, i.e., less harmful crime types (Barr and Pease, 1990). This is the similar idea of benign displacement. • 36. Theme Of Patriarchy In The Epic Of Gilgamesh For centuries, books, television shows, even beloved childhood movies have subtly reinforced the social construct of patriarchy. Classic movies such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty follow the typical story line of a damsel in distress, followed by a heroic man coming to her rescue. This conception of a male focused storyline is nothing new and is an aspect that constitutes patriarchy, which has existed since the advent of agriculture and has persisted throughout the centuries. In fact, patriarchy was a major theme that was reinforced in the first story ever recovered; The Epic of Gilgamesh was written as early as 2000 BC in Mesopotamia and is loosely based on the Sumerian king, Gilgamesh. The story tells of Gilgamesh s adventures with his friend Enkidu as they conquer everything from other men to the Bull of Heaven. Throughout the story, patriarchy is heavily reinforced. Although the driving force behind patriarchy is personal attainment of security and status, a number of objectively undesirable events result such as the subjugation of women and societies that value control and dominance. The narrator reinforces different aspects of patriarchy in The Epic of Gilgamesh by portraying men in a good light and women in a bad one, focusing society around males, withholding agency from female females, normalizing violence, and creating the need for unequal relationships between men and women. The narrator of this epic consistently reinforced the stereotypical gender roles and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The main idea of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich demonstrates the complications and the way on how minimum wage workers survived during 1996 in Florida, Maine, and in Minnesota when the welfare reform had an impact on minimum wage. Her goal was to experience how to settle for rent, food, and bills while working in minimum salary. The idea of this project came in mind when she discussed with Lewis Lapham, the editor of Harper s, about future articles in magazines and then asked How does anyone live on the wages available to the unskilled? • 40. Kirksville Library Volunteers Case Introduction to Organization and Environment In regards to the Kirksville Library Volunteers Case, this is a medium sized public library located in a large, southern city. Non profit. Funding. In order for the library to function beyond the limits of its normal paid staff, the library relies on a large volunteer reserve of 75 volunteers. This library functions like many other libraries in its input, throughput, and output. It is most likely a non profit organization that is funded by sources such as taxes, grants, and private benefactors. The library also likely runs on a quarterly budget if not a yearly budget and it does not often have to change how things are done. Because of this, the library by definition falls into a placid environment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Volunteers would be guaranteed projects and tasks to do during their shift. In this situation there would only be one employee managing the 75 volunteers, again this may be too much for one person. Managing a lot of individuals can cause frustration for the selected employee who is managing the volunteers, thus disturbing morale in the workplace. The most practical solution for this management case would be to choose three to four serious, eligible and qualified volunteers to become Volunteer Coordinators. Each Volunteer Coordinator would be assigned to one section of the library e.g. circulation, technical services, or outreach and so on. They would be liaising with staff from the designated section, creating a list of projects and tasks that could be fulfilled by the volunteer. Previous communication issues would more than likely be solved between staff and volunteer coordinators. The Volunteer Coordinators would then select which category of the library volunteers would work, dividing them up evenly as possible. A trusting relationship will begin to form after the volunteer works in their designated section. One disadvantage of this arrangement could be that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Linguistics and Child .Introduction Language is a human tendency to communicate with others and this could underlie the emergence of language. Montessori said, To talk is in the nature of man. Humans needed language in order to communicate, and soon, the powers that come with language were revealed. The evolution of the human language began when communication was done through pictograms or pictures and drawings. It then developed into ideograms when pictures began to turn into symbols. Later, these symbols became words, words involved letters, vowels emerged, one symbol came to represent one sound, an alphabet was created, and then came the alphabet we now use today. And just as language evolved hundreds of thousands of years ago, it also changes with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Charles Yang Montessori Prepared Environment | | | | | The prepared environment is Maria Montessori s concept that the environment can be designed to facilitate maximum independent learning and exploration by the child. In the prepared environment, there is a variety of activity as well as a great deal of movement. In a preschool classroom, for example, a three year old may be washing clothes by hand while a four year old nearby is composing words and phrases with letters known as the movable alphabet, and a five year old is performing multiplication using a specially designed set of beads. In an elementary classroom, a small group of six to nine year old children may be using a timeline to learn about extinct animals while another child chooses to work alone, analyzing a poem using special grammar symbols. Sometimes an entire class may be involved in a group activity, such as storytelling, singing, or movement. In the calm, ordered space of the Montessori prepared environment, children work on activities of their own choice at their own pace. • 42. The Effects Of Salmon Farming On The Salmon Population Essay Introduction Fish, one of our most important sources of high quality protein, provides some 16% of the animal protein consumed by the world s population, (Food Agriculture Organization, FAO, of the United Nations, 1997). Our responses towards a growing demand for fish led to a boom in the salmon farming industry (Naylor, et al., 1998). Unfortunately, the consequences of salmon farming outweigh the value that comes with it. Even though salmon farming is steadily becoming more sustainable, salmon farming is not a suitable and environmentally sound way of producing food due to the negative issues salmon farming has caused in the environment, the salmon population, and the health of humans. Salmon farming effects to wild salmon population Scientists of various fields have found that escaped salmon from fisheries have negatively impacted the salmon population. The gradual increase of salmon farming has led to a higher rate of escaped salmon reaching local ecosystems. As farmed salmon escape through weather events, poor containment, careless handling, etc. the local ecology changes dramatically. In McGinnity s study (2003), farmed salmon have been found to breed poorly and have difficulty surviving in comparison to wild salmon. The study was carried out in Western Ireland and highlighted the behavioral differences between wild salmon against various generations of hybrid salmon. It was found that farmed salmon and hybrid salmon (various mixed farmed wild breeds) carry the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Odysseus Vs. Epic Of Gilgamesh Madison Aycock HST 328 Dr. Chang 20 Oct. 2017 Paper Topic One: Odysseus vs. Gilgamesh Sometimes it only takes a few seemingly small flaws to determine if one will live a lifetime of adversity, and this appears to be the case for both Odysseus in Homer s Odyssey and Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Unlike what their grand titles may suggest, these ancient heroes were by no means perfect people, and, if anything, it would be more realistic to attribute the concept of imperfection with them instead. However, that is not suggesting that heroism equates to imperfection, but rather that these heroes have earned their titles from their battles with their imperfections. In the introduction of the Epic of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Gilgamesh Tb.I P5.) Odysseus, however, was very different from Gilgamesh in terms of his ruling style. While Gilgamesh had exercised harsh and unjustified rule, Odysseus had difficulties controlling and disciplining his crewmen. Throughout Odysseus journey home, on the boat given to him by the Phaeacian King Alcinous, there were many instances where the crewmen did not follow his leadership, made their own decisions, and even talked back to him. For example, whilst Odysseus and his crewmen approached the island of the Sun god Helios, he reminded them of Circe s dangerous prophecy regarding the temptations of Helios island. Thus, he ordered his men to sail forward (Homer, Od. 12.294 299); however, one seaman, Eurylochus, pleaded him to let them stop for the night and rest; the rest of the crewmen agreed with Eurylochus cheerfully, to which Odysseus gave in and allowed them to rest one night, if only they all promised not to harm Helios cattle. (Homer, Od. 12.328 329) Under better authority, the crewmen would not have pleaded to their leader, nor would their leader have given in so easily; however, Odysseus was easily manipulated and lacked the necessary authoritative skill. Unfortunately, this was neither his only nor greatest flaw. Actually, Odysseus greatest known flaw is what is known as hubris, and it is often described as a sense of excessive pride or defiance of the gods. Odysseus greatest show of hubris occurred on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Renewable Sources Of Energy And Energy The world today is a place of rapid progress and scientific advancement, which has been going strong for the last few decades. This period will gradually begin to slow down and eventually stop altogether because the world will, quite literally, run out of fuel. Right now, the majority of all the energy used in the day to day lives and operations of the entire world population are nonrenewable. This energy is created from the fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas. Fossil fuels are still cheap and high in supply, but the rate at which we are consuming them, which is only expected to increase, vastly exceeds the rate at which they regenerate. This creates the aforementioned problem of mankind running out of the required natural resources to fuel its own energy demands. The only solution to this problem that is possible, is to begin placing more influence renewable sources of energy and doing so as soon as possible. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power. Each of these are insignificant alone, but as a group they become a viable alternative to nonrenewable energy sources. Together, they have the potential to replace the fossil fuels as our primary provider of energy. Although there are many that argue against the use of renewable energy it is vital that the United States government makes the implementation and widespread use of renewable energy sources mandatory. Experts have known and understood that nonrenewable energy sources ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All these groups have a unique culture, languages, and beliefs. History: Indigenous communities have existed for thousands of years on the Canadian territories. However, accordingly to Maldonado, Having an Indian status does not necessarily mean free universities and no taxes (lecture, November 15, 2016). The Canadian s stereotypes about Indigenous people and their favorable position in the society is based on the misunderstanding and leads to the discrimination they are still facing nowadays. Although Canada s bill of rights were created in 1960 and gave people the right for equality, liberty, and freedom of speech and religion, even the fact of existence of Residential Schools makes it obvious that Ingenious people were still harshly discriminated. Those schools, where children were kept away from their families and taught that their culture was evil, that their parents were pagans, that their identity was primitive, existed till 1996 and have been teaching approximately 150,000 First Nation, Inuit and Metis children (lecture, November 15, 2016). Residential School is an example of the discrimination against Aboriginals, trial to diminish the culture, language and family connections of the whole nation. The formation of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was an essential step for the Government in order to renew the positive relationships with Indigenous people. This commission worked on revealing the truth about the Residential Schools and informing about it all Canadians. I believe that creating such programs is an important part of history of social policy in Canada as it fosters positive relationships between different groups of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
