2. Introduction
This presentation will tell you about.
• What is a Robot ?
• Quadruped and quadruped robot and its need
• Bigdog Robot
– About
– Architecture
– System Specifications
– Capabilities
3. What is a Robot ?
• According to Robot Institute of America,
Reprogrammable, Multifunctional manipulator
• Designed to move material, parts, tools or
specialized devices
• Using various programmed motions for the
performance of a variety of Tasks
4. Quadruped and Quadruped Robot
• Animals with four legs. Source: Oxford Dictionary
• Quadrupedalism: Terrestrial locomotion in
animals using four limbs or legs. Source:
Wikipedia
• Quadruped Robot: Four Legged Robot
– Self balancing, using sensors
– Also called, Quadrupod
5. Need of Quadruped Robot
• Earth’s half landmass is only accessible vehicles
• People and Animals can go almost anywhere
• Uncertain and Extreme rough terrain
• Efficient Warhead
• Stability, in any uncertain surface motion
6. Bigdog: Quadruped Robot
• Four legged Robot, Developed by Boston
Dynamics, funded by- DARPA.
• Unmanned legged vehicles with rough-terrain
mobility superior to existing vehicles.
• Can Negotiate terrain with a minimum of
human intervention.
• Carry its own fuel and payload
8. • It can stand up, squat down
• Travel speed for the crawl is about 0.2 m/s
• For trot is about 1.6 m/s, running trot- 2 m/s
• It weighs about 109 kg, 1 meter tall, 1.1 meters
long, and 0.3 m wide.
• jump about 1.1 meters, carried 154 kg- flat
terrain.
• Longest continuous operation- 10 km hike (6.2
miles) that lasted 2.5 hours.
• Climb slopes upto 35 degrees.
Capabilities
9. System Specs
• Power supply- Leopard go-Kart engine, water-
cooled two-stroke Internal Combustion engine
15hp, 9000 rpm, electric Starter.
• Variable displacement hydraulic pump (3,000
psi)
• Custom actuator package (x16)
• About 50 sensors.
• Inertial sensors, joint sensors, homeostasis
sensors: hydraulic pressure, flow and
temperature, engine speed and temperature, and
the like.
10. Control System
• Human operator- through an operator control
unit (OCU) that communicates with the robot
via IP radios.
• High-level Input- to steer and speed.
• Start or stop its engine, stand up, squat down,
walk, trot, or jog.
• A visual display for operational and engineering
data.
• BigDog's onboard control system operate legs,
provide stability, reflex responses to external
disturbances.
11. Summary
• Robot is a reprogrammable, multifunctional
manipulator
• Quadruped Robots have four legs, self
balancing
• Bigdog is the most advanced quadruped robot
• Inspired from fact- Animals and human can go
anywhere, unlike wheels
• Capable to cope extreme terrains
