Apologetics New Generation
Review 3: Sean McDowell, Apologetics for a New Generation (Harvest House, 2009)
SUMMARY
Apologetics for a New Generation is a compilation of essays from some of the greatest Christian
minds geared towards answering the question: How do we use apologetics effectively to reach the new
generations? It is clear that large numbers of youngsters view Christianity negatively. Relativism and
postmodernism have eroded the mindset and values in our culture. Therefore, the immutable truths of
Christianity need to be pitched differently to the current generation. Apologetics is more important
than ever, but the manner in which we deliver truth is equally important: Christians must build
relationships in the context of love, civility, wisdom and kindness ... Show more content on

We need to retell the stories of old, the stories of Scripture and of Jesus Resurrection in ways that
captivate the modern mind without compromising truth. This statement from Brian Godawa
summarizes my take away from the book: The one who can tell the best story, in a very real sense,
wins the epoch (131). As a left sided brain engineer (and not unlike Godawa), I expected my logical
syllogisms to be devastating to atheism and that after seeing the undeniable logic in them, unbelievers
would come to Christ in hordes. I am well aware that is unlikely to happen. I am convinced that the
days when masses walk down the aisles in football stadiums to receive Christ are long gone. With the
advent of relativism, postmodernism, and mass media, the modern apologist should adopt a distinct
approach. From Apologetics for a New Generation and past experience I believe there are tree
winning strategies for the modern apologist to win the new generations : (1) Storytelling: both Jesus
and the Apostle Paul had the gift of storytelling. They took fact, encapsulated it in a context relevant
and captivating story, and delivered it to those willing to hear. They were interesting, engaging, and
truthful. They knew their culture and how to engage it. We

Essay On The Great Stupa Of Sanchi
The Great Stupa, Sanchi One of the outstanding monuments in India, the Great Stupa, Sanchi, leaves a
lasting impression on its visitors. It is found that its construction is started back in the 3rd century
during Mauryan emperor Ashoka s regime and researchers believe that it is one of the most ancient
stone structures India has in its geographical boundary (Archaeological Survey of India). At the
present time, it is in Sanchi town, situated in one of the India s states, Madhya Pradesh s Raisen
district. This Buddhist pilgrimage attraction is not remained only as a tourist spot in India, but it has
world s recognition as well. UNESCO has recognized its legacy and includes it in World heritage site
category. In truth, it is one of the marvel architectures in India, which depicts ancient Buddhist art and
architecture, of which construction and amendments spans into several different centuries (third
century BC to the twelfth century AD) (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 1989). The thesis of the

Many theorists have interpreted several studies on this Stupa for its relation with nature s elements.
For example, the Great Stupa of Sanchi has surrounded by a balustrade reminiscent of Sun s circuit.
Further, having 28 posts, harmika balustrade represents the number of nakshatras (Subhash, 2010).
Likewise, its orientation is also kept in line with the center of the structure and assigning a vector to
determine the exact East West line on the date of the Spring equinox. Further, talking about its
symbolism, Stupa, it represents freedom from the birth death cycle, and while its dome represents
world egg and Buddha s life and other Jataka stories epitomize Buddha himself. Similarly, four
gateways denote elements of Buddhist philosophy. Its hill location even represents the spreading of

Identity In Outliers By Malcolm Gladwell
Most young adults do not have a single clue of what they want to do with their lives. These young
adults do not know who they are or what they want to become. They are absolutely oblivious until the
end of high school or even college. They have not developed their identity completely. Meanwhile, in
the book Outliers, written by Malcolm Gladwell, it talks about certain characters who have developed
their identity and stand out in history, such as Bill Gates and Bill Joy. It talks about how these
successful people became successful. There are many aspects that contribute to the identity and
success of someone. The development of one s identity plays an important role in one s future and
determines who someone is; their identity is based off their skills, talents, and the background that
they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One s skills and talents define what someone does and how others perceive them. In Outliers,
Gladwell speaks of the 10,000 Hour Rule . He says that if one practices a skill for 10,000 hours, then
they will master that skill. Some musicians, like the Beatles, are known for their music and their
musical talent, because they practiced over 10,000 hours. Their musical skills help develop their
identity and how others recognize them. Also, the author states, The average person has an average IQ
of one hundred, the voice over continued. Einstein one fifty. Chris has an IQ of one ninety five
(Gladwell 70). This quote takes place during a game show, in which Chris is competing in. Since
Chris has such a prodigious IQ, he has multiple skills in intelligence. This increases his chance in
winning the game show. The Beatles s and Chris s identity are developed by their skills and talents. If
they never became famous, they would not be the people they are today. Even though skills and talents
play an immense role in developing one s identity, other factors can contribute to it, such as the
background one comes

Goodwill Impairment at Jackson Enterprises Case
1. When is a company required to perform the two step test for goodwill impairment? Explain in your
own words and provide citation from the ASC.
Goodwill is considered impaired when the implied fair value of goodwill in a reporting unit of a
company is less than its carrying amount, or book value, including any deferred income taxes. By
qualitative factors, if the fair value is less than its book value (likelihood more than 50%), two step of
the goodwill impairment test is necessary. According to ASC 350 20 35 2 and 3(A amp;B amp;D), if

According the above assessment of qualitative factors for both companies, I think that the goodwill

Dynamic has 3% of gross profit margins over competitors, it was not enough to offset the negative
impacts; I think that the goodwill impairment test is not necessary for ZD. Due to ZD shows all

Essay 12 Angry Men Analysis
12 Angry Men Analysis
12 Angry Men is a movie, directed by Sidney Lumet, about twelve jurors who are deliberating a
murder trial. An 18 year old has been accused of murdering his father and the jury has retired to
determine his fate. The jury performs a preliminary vote and the results came out to be eleven for
guilty and one, the architect played by Henry Fonda, for not guilty. The rest of the jury then begins to
persuade the architect that the accused is actually guilty. Each member of the jury played a key role in
the development of the group and the task at hand. The foreman played a major task role and was
almost like a manager of the group. He didn t have much to contribute to the discussion of the case,

than the trial. He was one of the more difficult jurors because he made inappropriate remarks and
jokes, he didn t contribute very much to the discussion, he insulted a few of the other jurors, and he
changed his vote without having a reason other than, I don t think he s guilty. Henry Fonda s character
was an architect and who played a task and maintenance role. He was the first person to say not guilty
and started the entire discussion which ultimately made everyone change their vote to not guilty. The
ninth juror, the wise elderly man, played a maintenance role. At one point in the movie the architect
decides that after a vote he would say guilty if the rest of the jury still voted guilty. After the vote, the
old man was the only person to change to not guilty because he felt that standing alone isn t easy and
he wanted to hear more facts about the trial. The tenth juror, the garage owner, was a self centered
bigot and seemed to stick to the fact that the accused was guilty because of his race or social level.
After a while it seemed that the race of the accused was the only grounds that he had to argue

Summary Of The Scarlet Ibis By James Hurst
Storms and Sorrow
It s strange that all this is still so clear to me, now that summer has long since fled and time has had its
way, ( Hurst 595). James Hurst s short story The Scarlet Ibis is full of symbolism. The use of
symbolism does a great deal to add to the tone of the story by allowing large concepts to be depicted
simply and subtlety, such as the characters emotions and the misfortune that befalls Doodle. The
symbols that James Hurst uses range from the colors of the settings the characters are in to the scarlet
ibis from which the book draws its name, with many others in between. By far the most important
symbol Hurst uses is the ibis, because not only does it foreshadow the death of Doodle and his
determination to survive, but shows that both it and Doodle were thrust into worlds where they were
incapable to live and thrive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The bird not only dies from circumstances similar to those of Doodles but also in appearance, namely

untimely demise. The bird s red feathers are comparable to the Doodle s blood stained clothing at his
time of death. The deaths of both Doodle and the ibis are both related to storms giving even more
evidence to the claim that the ibis and Doodle meet their and in similar

Question: What Is Psychology?
One of the most common questions asked by students new to the study of psychology is What is

Comparing the Forgotten God of Love in Robert Bridges Poem EPÙÓ and Anne Stevenson s Poem
Eros
It is often in books, poems, paintings, and sculptures that one hears of and sees the goddess of love.
But when is it that one hears of the god? In Greek mythology, Eros is the god of love, and a god who
is many times overlooked. In Robert Bridges EPÙÓ and Anne Stevenson s Eros , the idea that Eros is
overlooked is portrayed, but in two separate ways. Techniques such as diction, imagery, and tone are
used to help convey the idea.
EPÙÓ, Greek for Eros, is shown to be beautiful in Bridges poem: beautiful and adored, yet forgotten.

After so many times of distributing love, but receiving no recognition, respect, or acknowledgement of
any sort, Eros face just turned blank.
Continuing on, Bridges writes, And would in darkness come, but thou makest the light wher er thou
go. Ah yet no victim of thy grace. This shows the horrible state of disregard that Eros has to face. It is
sad, that after all the satisfaction and light love gives, love himself isn t satisfied and is still
enshrouded in the dark. Eros himself is forgotten. All the love Eros creates and instills in people stay,
but Eros and even his memory is quickly overlooked and not given the proper gratitude and reverence.
In Anne Stevenson s Eros, the god of love is shown to be broken and abused. Many negative words
are used to emphasize Eros brokenness. He is described as a bully boy, a brute that offends, and is
given blows delivered by lust. These words are not pleasant, as they illustrate an offensive, hurtful
figure. As a slave to immortality, Eros is doomed to a bruised and battered visage for eternity. It is
destined for him to endure such a future because of the nature of his job. These strong words of hate
and hurt show the pain that love had to endure. The caller of love asks, Can this be you, with boxer
lips and patchy wings askew? Eros answers with, what you see is what long overuse has made

Bart Vs. Australia Is Offensive To Australians Everywhere
Why The Simpsons Episode Bart versus Australia is Offensive To Australians Everywhere The
Simpsons has a pull on everyone. I ve watched the show since I was older enough to understand what
half the jokes mean. Every episode has a habit of sucking you in and not letting go until the episode
has ended. Well, one episode in particular rattles my bones in an angry sort of way. In 1995, an
episode called Bart versus Australia aired. At the time, this writer didn t know how intimidating the
episode was. Years later, we were studying something Australia based in high school English when we
had to watch the episode. Since then, the episode has offended this writer. Let s allow ourselves now
to look at the reasons why this episode is offensive and why the people of Australia could take
offense. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Aristotelian Influence Durrenmatt
However, the most important Aristotelian influence Durrenmatt is arguably the chorus. The chorus is
the melody and song element of Aristotelian tragedies. A chorus is a group of people who are
homogenized and are non individualized that comment and react as one to the action of the play in
order to help the audience follow the play. The chorus also typically comments on the moral issue in
the play, for example in The Visit comments on the moral issue of if justice can be bought as well as
provide insight into the play. Typically in Greek tragedies there would only be a few actors who would

reader to truly understand why the town needed and wanted the money so badly that they were willing
to kill the town s one most beloved man, Ill. In Act II and III however, is when the chorus begins to

This is even more prevalent at the end of the act when the townspeople surround Ill at the train station

Examples Of Ptsd In The Iliad
PTSD and a Reevaluation of Homer s Achilles
In Homer s Iliad, Achilles hears about the death of his dearest friend and says Nothing matters to me
now / But killing and blood and men in agony (19.226). In the fit of reckless violence which follows,
he slaughters so many young men that he clogs the River Scamander with their gore, slays helpless
suppliants, and attempts to mutilate his chief enemy s body after killing him. While it is impossible to
deny Achilles compulsive and violent behavior in much of The Iliad, modern research on the effects of
battle trauma on the human psyche invites us to reevaluate his behavior. In light of modern research
conducted on war veterans suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Achilles ... Show

Achilles, once a figure of godlike power and bravery, now appears a very mortal figure suffering from
the brutality of war. His fall from heroism to barbarism is no less tragic and no less horrid, but is much
more understandable when viewed as a psychological phenomenon only recently identified by modern
psychology. This understanding of Achilles also serves to bridge the cultural and temporal gaps
between Homeric society and our own. The Iliad provides compelling evidence that PTSD is a cross
cultural and cross temporal disorder which warriors have experienced since time immemorial. From
Troy to Vietnam and beyond, soldiers have suffered trauma from combat which has in turn caused
them to inflict violence on others, as well as on themselves. Achilles almost cuts his own throat in the
opening lines of Book 18, and refuses to eat, drink or bathe for most of the rest of The Iliad. Thus, he
effectively makes himself the living dead (in commiseration with Patroclus). Similarly, the number of
Vietnam vets who have committed suicide exceeds the number who died during and after the war
from wounds, and an estimated 1.5 million still suffer from

Greed In Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
The 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory , based off of an original story by Roald

entertaining characters and chocolate filled world are enough to attract anyone viewer, not to mention
its innocent nature, making it a great watch for all ages. But if you look closely into the tale, you will
begin to see that it shows a scary resemblance to a topic far more mature than what is visible from a

While it is not the first thing that comes to mind when the sins are brought up, gluttony is a huge
aspect of our society, referring to the overconsumption of goods and resources to the point of waste.
Society today literally runs off of gluttony, where people on a daily basis are always after more, no
matter how much they already have. This ties into greed on some levels, but it differs in that when
people are gluttonous, they crave so much that things are being wasted or taken away from those who
don t have much. It is almost ironic to think that as much as we encourage giving to local food banks
or volunteering at soup kitchens, we are so gluttonous and waste so much food everyday that could go
to other people who have nothing and are dying of starvation. Gluttony is extremely present in the
film, specifically Augustus Gloop, who practically eats his feelings. In almost all of the clips we see of
him, his is shoving down sweets, particularly the scene in the film where he falls into the chocolate
river after trying to drink from it. Alternatively, Violet Beauregard can be seen as the best fit character
for gluttony, shown when she steals the gum from Mr. Wonka, despite him telling her not to. But there
are undoubtedly more examples that show just how gluttonous Augustus is, and he is a better
representation of the sin than any other character in the

onomatopoeia s. Followed by track Represent , this is the only track to have other artists featured;
these artists include Jae Harmony, Nobe, and Crowda. It surely wouldn t have hurt to have a small
handful of other artists on other songs to bring more to the table either. At least with varying
producers, and diversified samples, there s enough variation to never become too monotonous at any
point.
Arguably, one of the greatest issues with The Android FiLFTEEN EP as a whole is that the outro track
is simply non existent to compliment the intro in the same manner we were brought in. While it s an
EP and doesn t necessarily need to be confined to having an album experience, it would have made for
absolute completion. Instead, G Mo Skee decided to stop on the track Sabotage . Although, both the
intro and Sabotage convey similar messages of hatred, it s not quite the same. I ll admit it s a fantastic
track and within my top 3 on the extended play but ultimately detracts from the experience in

Open-Carry Case Study
The 2015 Texas legislature passed a bill to allow concealed handgun permit holders to begin carrying
their handguns openly. You do not have to conceal your gun like you did in the past. The bill was
signed into law on June 13, 2015, and was effect as of January 1, 2016. Handguns should be carried in
a hip or shoulder holster when out in the open now. Businesses can in fact say no to guns on their
sites, areas that were considered gun free zones before this bill took effect remain gun free zones
today. If businesses decide to ban guns they have to post signs to let their customers know. Some of
the businesses in Texas (and other states) that are banning open carry include Whataburger, H E B,
Whole Foods, Randall s Food Markets, Torchy s Tacos, Jimmy Changas and Gringo s Mexican
Kitchen. Ariana P Habich/shutterstock.com. www.keranews.org
Also, I work at a Texas Roadhouse and there is a sign that reads No open carry allowed at the front
door entrance but when I did some research online I did not find anything about any other Texas
Roadhouse banning open carry, nor do I recall any of my managers asking someone to leave because
they had an open carry firearm. Concluding from my research, I did not find any problems on open
carry in any of the states that were already open carry before Texas joined. ... Show more content on

A Brief Biography Of Salvador Dali
On May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain, a boy named Salvador Dalí was born. People today know him as
a famous painter who symbolized surrealism. Throughout his life, the experiences that he confronted
within his journey set him on the path of success. The way his family raised him and supported his
craft, joining the surrealist movement and even the people he had in his life helped shaped the man he
was and how he acted until his death. After Dalí s forced retirement, on January 23, 1989 at the age of
85, Dalí passed away due to heart failure. Dalí was the second born of three into the family of
Salvador and Felipa Dome Dalí. However, he grew up as the first born due to his older brother dying

It was during this time when he was introduced to the style of Surrealism. Then in 1929 he met
Diakonova, also known as Gala , who turned out to become his wife in 1934. Even though Freud s
theory is considered to be eccentric and outdated in today s society. However, some parts of his theory
still hold true in the present and to people s lives. One of Freud s components of this theory was the
Oedipus complex and castration anxiety. The Oedipus complex is the unconscious desire to have the
mother and get rid of the father. It is during this complex when castration anxiety occurs within the
son and the superego starts to develop. Castration anxiety is the fear that his penis will be cut off by
the father. Dalí s father was a notary who held political and social power, not only within his job but
also within the family dynamic as well. Dalí s father had such a bad temper that Dalí was afraid of him
and sought comfort from his mother. Because of this, he and his father competed for his mother s
attention and love. Another example in Dalí s life of the Oedipus complex is the way his mom and dad
treated him. Before Dalí was born, his parents had another son and named him Salvador Dalí. Yet, he
died during infancy and nine months later they had another son and named him Salvador Dalí as well.
Throughout his childhood, his parents treated him like he was the son they had lost. An example Dalí
has talked about is when he was 5 years old, his parent took him to his brother s

Compare And Contrast David And The Evolution Of Art
The evolution of art, be it paintings, sculpture, poetry or music has impacted the world towards a more
observant and intelligent society. The Renaissance was a movement that saw the reemergence of
realistic depiction of human form and nature. These artists were inspired by the ancient Greek and
Roman art and it s culture. Renaissance masterpieces incorporated accurate and harmonious
proportions of the human body and balanced, well thought out compositions relating to the ideas of an
ideal world. The Baroque movement came right after the Renaissance. It was developed in Rome, by
the Catholic church in the hope of reinventing itself. This style used a lot of drama and grandeur to

have left us enough evidence of their mastery and are immortals because of their work. The intention
here is to compare the differences and similarities of ; Michelangelo Buonarroti s and Gianlorenzo
Bernini s representation of David. According to the Old Testament, (Samuel, book 1) David was a
shepherd who was among the battle lines of the Israelites and who accepted the challenge to fight
Goliath, champion of the Philistines, one on one. David came out victorious despite the lack of
protection and armoury by cutting Goliath s head off after bringing him down from his horse with a
single stone shot. David, since then is considered a symbol of bravery and intelligence. He s also a
symbol of hope and strength for the weak. He is the proof that there are other more important virtues
aside from physical strength that confide power. Due to this important symbology many artists
decided to create their own representation of how they saw this brave figure while giving a very
important message to the spectators. Some of these artists are Donatello, Ghiberti Verrocchio,

Male Gaze In The Gaze
The gaze is an important part of any literary work in that it defines the viewpoint from which the
reader sees the rest of the story. The gaze, however, is also much more than a particular point of view.
It is a conveyance of power, and a way in which a narrator is able to completely shape the way readers
understand other characters in the story, imparting their own standards and beliefs onto an often
unrealizing audience. The gaze has a very clear relation to power in the sense that it is what shapes
how an audience sees certain things. An example of this is through the institution of white supremacy
in media via the gaze of the mass media in the mid 20th century. As Bell Hooks explains, when black
people in the United States first had the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it be the console game or the video, the gaze conveys the same image: the woman is an
object, there for the male to act upon, but without any input onto her surroundings of her own.
Let us take, for example, the role of Mary Jane in the Spiderman franchise. This is especially
important because Spiderman is primarily marketed towards a younger audience, thus imparting the
male gaze upon young people who may never realize that they are being influenced. Mary Jane is the
object of affection of not only Spiderman, but also of Harry Osborn, who becomes the villain Green
Goblin.
Here, we see Mary Jane as the object of desire for both hero and villain, and is subsequently captured
and used to lure the hero into battle, where Spiderman must come to her rescue and save the day. And
then, once rescued, of course, Mary Jane falls for her heroic savior, despite the obvious danger that his
existence has placed her in throughout the course of the tale. But think, for a minute, what things
would be like if they were portrayed from the female gaze, by way of Mary Jane. The story would be
entirely different, with the men involved all becoming villains in their own

Smallpox Viruses Essay
For approximately three thousand years, smallpox has ravaged and plagued the four corners of the

West, with an astounding 90% mortality rate in America. It wasn t until 1796, with English surgeon
Edward Jenner s smallpox vaccination, that the world saw relief from this devastating virus. However,
even with this inoculation in use, the world continued to witness death from both the virus and the
vaccine. In the year 1966, it was estimated that 10 15 million infected citizens world wide had passed

stated, If you really believe there s a bioterrorist threat out there, then you can t get rid of smallpox. If
smallpox is outlawed, only outlaws will have smallpox ( Preston 4). To date, only Russia and the
United States have clearance to maintain the smallpox virus in two selected laboratories. Enforced by
the W.H.O, this was mandated to ensure that the virus cultures could be heavily monitored and
researched to prevent future outbreaks. Unfortunately, the power that is associated with having access
to a virus as devastating as smallpox is often interwoven with greed. For example, in 1991, British
inspectors discovered that the Russian government had been testing bio nuclear weapons using
smallpox in an unauthorized base ( Preston 6). Since smallpox can be used as a powerful weapon,
there is no way to determine what country may try to obtain it. Additionally, even if a country was
highly suspected of testing the virus for warfare, it would be difficult to prove that the country actually
had virus cultures. During that same inspection in Russia, for instance, the head of the base that was

The Negative Effects Of Technology
The use of technology varies amongst different age groups, often used for productive means, but there
is also a negative side of technology usage. With the advancement of technology, technology is
considered as survival tools for humans. These generally make life easier and helps humans be extra
productive. Moreover, Adults harness the power of technology to solve complex problems. Usually,
this can only be done with the aid of a computer. Another arena of technology use is for school, both,
parents and teachers believe technology helps enhance learning. Although technology is meant to be
useful in different scenarios, it does not always mean it is healthy. For example, as suggested in a
study Students who use less technology, score higher on reading exam versus those who use
technology above the average (Bremmer, 2016). Society has evolved to misuse technology in many
unhealthy ways; these negative uses have many ramifications for individuals.
With the advancement of technology, communication is far more convenient for today s society,
especially with long distance relationships. People with family, friends, and loved ones who are miles
away now can video chat easily through apps, on their devices, such as FaceTime or Skype. For
example, when parents cannot make it to their kid s soccer game because they are on the other side of

Some of the artifacts that define the NSWC PCD culture include the Annual Report Naval Surface
Warfare Center, strategic plan, annual employee survey results and follow on actions, and display
cases in lobbies of buildings across the base, lack of a formal dress code, and flexible schedules. The
commands values can be seen in the verbiage in the artifacts, e.g. technical rigor, investing in people,
equal opportunity. After the annual employee surveys are analyzed the CO and TD meet with each
department to report the results of the survey and the action items the CO will take to address any
problems identified. Special attention is always given to analysis of demographics and diversity in
upward mobility trends. The first female department head took over the business support department
four years ago. In 2014 there were four female department heads of the six departments. However,
there is only one deputy department head at this time, and very few female division level managers. A
total of only six division or branch head positons are held by women.

History of the Fire Service
The History of the Fire Service
Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost being
destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about 7,000 paid
firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets with the
authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major piece of
firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to hand to
deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the fuel and
prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to escape a
burning building. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with the establishment of fire companies, fire insurance was also created.
In 1829, a steam fire engine was built in London, but the volunteer fire companies were stuck in the
olden days and they were slow to accept it, but in Cincinnati, Ohio, the public forced the firefighters to
use the steam engines. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology to develop the
first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was struck, and boxes
were placed all over the city.
Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull their
engine. Before long, horses became a part of the fire service all over the country (Hashagan). Many of
the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the front of the
engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians were chosen as
fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also because they
guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the
dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of the
fire house (Hashagan).
In the year 1870, the aerial ladder wagon appeared. This enabled the firefighters to reach high places,
tall buildings, and made putting out fires and rescuing trapped victims easier. Then in 1871 the hose
elevator was created. The hose elevator made it possible for the water

Irish Immigration To Chicago Essay
The history of Irish in Chicago follows a similar pattern to one alike the Irish in other American cities
where they settled in large numbers. Many early immigrants created a visible Irish community which
was sustained by many different key structures, this community stayed relatively together into the

In the 1830s and 1840s, the growth of Irish immigration occurred with significant numbers of Irish

Explain What Natural Resources Were Highly Valued During...
Natural resources were highly valued during the era of imperialism. Natural market trade was a
popular source of income, and with this, natural resources were necessities. If a country did not have
enough natural resources on their own soil to make a decent share, they had to expand their territory
by taking over other lands. Being the holder of large territories of land was also highly valued during
this time. The more land a country had, the stronger and more powerful they viewed as. With
expansion and power came a need for a smart political system. In the period of 1880 to 1914,
Europeans acquistized African colonies because they were politically smart so they had justification
for this, they needed more natural resources, and they needed to expand of their territories. To begin, a

The Chaco And Its Effects On Indigenous Peoples
Much of the Chaco is still inhabited by indigenous people who often do not have rights to the territory
they are on. Development brought on by actions from organizations like the IIRSA can be devastating
to the indigenous people. Natural resource companies can displace communities. They can also harm
the indigenous people by extracting resources which the indigenous rely on for their way of life. The
IIRSA is attempting to boost economic development by promoting resource extraction and agriculture
production, but in doing so they are harming many communities that need the Chaco s resources to
survive. According to a USAID Issue Brief about Tenure and Indigenous Peoples new infrastructure to
improve access to markets, facilitate trade, and promote economic growth leads to an increase in
demand for land. This new infrastructure makes it easier for settlers, merchants, and illegal loggers to
clear forests and settle in indigenous territories. The USAID brief also mentions how this
infrastructure has both directly and indirectly caused negative effects in the Gran Chaco region. They

Open and Closed Source Systems Essay
An operating system is a considered a set of programs that schedule tasks, assign storage and

created for personal use, some for business use, and some can be used for both. One of the biggest
differences is whether the operating system is open source or closed source. Operating systems are
created with programming code. Programmers are responsible for writing the source code, which is
compiled into executable code. This executable code is what creates the product ran on computers. An
open source system is a system in which the source code is visible. A closed source system keeps the

Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X operating systems. Like open source systems, closed source
systems offer software for a variety of uses that include personal, server and mobile.
Open Source Closed Source
Linux
Red Hat
Unix Windows 97, XP, 7, Vista
Versions of Window Server
Mac OS X
Closed source systems are usually found in personal computers because the level of expertise needed
to use them is minimal. There are many factors to consider when determining which system to use.
The level of expertise of the user, the costs of the system and any add ons, and the flexibility of the
system must all be considered. The type of application also plays some role in the decision. Both types
can be found in personal, server, and mobile applications. However, open source systems are often
found more in mobile and server applications.
Using the UNIX Environment
I am currently using Windows 7 as my primary operating system and I have been a Windows user
since I started really using computers so the transition for me to a UNIX/Linux environment has been
a bit daunting. For the purposes of this comparison I downloaded Cygwin, which emulates a Linux
environment quite well. The first issue that I had to figure out was where did the GUI go? I realized
that a UNIX/Linux system uses the command prompt

Observations On The Effect Of Pumping Jetty On The...
Observations Evidence Impact Pumping Jetty The pumping jetty has a positive impact on the
Southport Spit as it reduces the northward sand drift from forming bars in the entrance to the
Southport Seaway and blocking access to small craft. It also pumps sand north across the Southport
Seaway through a bypass pipe and out onto the beach of South Stradbroke Island (Banks, 2012).

loss of Southport Spits beach by helping maintain, conserve and rehabilitate the natural dunal areas
remaining. It is important for sand dunes to be maintained as they significantly protect the coastline.

2. The hotels in the association have a place in two particular divisions. The hotels and the resort
segment, each with their own particular executives. The two LOBS have held an in number
personality from before the merger. The divisions are even marked the organization names premerger.
An associated undertaking vision is not made totally clear from the case. The beginning vision for the
IT part was to get IT to bolster senior administration s control over marking advertising, and
operations. The ERP was initiated to get a solitary monetary framework and process set up, however
there appeared to be an organization purchase in on the thought. The data framework has considerably
less business comprehension and backing.
3. The organization has an IT directing board included in the choice making procedure.
4. The different character of the divisions puts a strain on the data gathering process and choosing
what data ought to be gathered. The resort division bargains generally with visits and gatherings while
the hotels have direct contact with clients when reserving a spot. The varying viewpoints prompts
every part of the data administration framework being pored over to verify the LOBs adjust. The data
gathered had the same issue as the financials distinctive frameworks and arrangements for the
information. There was little to none in the method for gauges between the individual hotels and
resorts.

“It’s not where I’ve been, it’s where I am going!”
It s not where I ve been, it s where I am going!
I don t understand it! There was cancer... I can t explain it? These were the words that where delivered
to Dwayne Cleveland, Stacy s husband by a doctor in the city of Tifton, Georgia. Only the day before,
Stacy had been given startling news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I was scared, I
was worried, and I was frightened! Stacy expressed to me as she sat in her small, southern kitchen,
starring at the camera. Her brown hair mixed in with the shadows caused by the low lighting, but yet

was glad that her daughter had a desire to go to church. On one particular Sunday Stacy related to me
that, Michael, her youngest was upset, and confronted Dwayne about their attendance at church.
Michael asked Why don t we go to church as a family? This comment caused Dwayne to really think,

Do Hair Colors Have Different Effects On Static Electricity
Designing your own experiment
1. Make an observation: When a balloon is rubbed on someone s head the hair on the person s head
will stand up, and if the balloon is later placed on a wall it will remain there for a certain amount of
time.
2. Ask a question: Do different hair colors have different effects on static electricity?
3. Prediction: The color of hair will have different effects on static electricity, one color of hair will
produce the highest amount of static electricity.
4. Hypothesis: If you have black hair then there will be a higher effect on static electricity then there

second balloon and write blonde, then a third and write red on it and on the last balloon write brown.
(You will only be doing 1 trail for each color of hair).
d. In your notebook, create a table with 2 columns and 5 rows the left column will be used for the 4

Paper On Frida Kahlo
For my artist research paper I decided to write about Frida Kahlo. I decided to do a paper on her
because I feel that she has a very interesting story to talk about. To begin with, Magdalena Carmen
Frieda Kahlo y Calderon, also known as Frida Kahlo, was born on July 6th of year 1907 at her parents
house known as La Casa Azul(The Blue House) in a small town, Coyoacan, in the outside skirts of
Mexico City. The Mexican Revolution began in the year of 1910. Kahlo later gave her birth date as
July 7 of 1910 because she wanted her birth to coincide with the beginning of the Mexican
Revolution. At the age of six, Frida caught a case of polio, known as an infectious disease. This
disease left her right leg thinner than the left and for feeling insecure ... Show more content on

Frida was best known for her self portraits. All she painted were self portraits because she said that she
often felt alone. Her mom decided to have an easel made so Frida can paint in bed, while her father
lends her a box of oil paints and brushes. The first painting she painted was in the year 1926 and was
entitled Self Portrait in a Velvet Dress. This self portrait of her shows that she has a long narrowed
face, long neck, and elongation of her hands recalls the Mannerist portraits of Bronzino. The turbulent
waves in background give this painting a deep emotional turmoil. In this painting, some of the line
work is bold, thick, and some that are flowing. The tone in this painting can be subtle. I think this is
the tone because it is very hard to describe and figure out what Frida was feeling while she painted
this. Most likely, she was feeling alone and depressed. Many of her paintings were a reference of her
reproduction failure. The painting Henry Ford Hospital also known as The Flying Bed, was based on
her first miscarriage in 1932.This painting is the most painful portrait she has painted. It is very
descriptive because it shows herself laying on the bed bleeding. There were six images surrounding
her body. On her lower abdomen by the umbilical cord looking red lines is the fetus of Dieguito. The
snail on the upper right represents the horror of losing a baby slowly. Next, is the machine on the
lower left, this symbolizes medical impersonality. The orchid is real and was actually a gift from

Components Of Multi Core Architecture
Multi core architecture 1. Introduction: It s a new trend in Computer Architecture in which, multiple
processor cores are replicated in one single integrated circuit die. These cores fit in single processor
socket called Chip Multi Processor (CMP), runs in parallel enhancing the overall speed of a program
in execution time. Each core has it s own time sliced threads executing CPU instructions just like in
uniprocessor. 2. Multi core Processors and Operating Systems: Most major Operating Systems support
multi core processors. Operating System perceives each core as separate processor. The operating
system scheduler maps it s threads and processes to different cores. 3. Advantages And Disadvantages:
Shifting towards more parallelism is a trend now in Computer Architecture. Many applications are
being multi threaded. For example, each opened tab in the browser runs in different threads. Games
are becoming increasingly multi threaded. File compression programs are multi threaded. Video
encoders are multi threaded as well. Most image processing programs are multi threaded. So,
converting to multi core processors was a must. It increases the speed, enhance the performance and
makes the clock frequency much higher. But, here we have to differentiate between two things. Using
multi core processors with multi threaded applications, and using it in single threaded applications.
Using multi core processors with multi threaded applications have

Therefore strategy should match to resources, altering environment and in specific markets and
customers. Therefore for surviving in this new competition, firms will have to develop suitable
strategies for cost reduction, quality enhancement, new investments and development of
competencies. Due to dynamic nature of market scenario, strategies will have to be dynamic with
time. A more natural and evolving approach is therefore to think of knowledge and skills required by a
company in order to maintain or improve its competitiveness. It is interesting to identify various
pressures and constraints on Indian auto component sector, relationship of pressures and constraints
with strategies and finally to analyze relationship of strategies with performance and competitiveness.
Formation of strategies and their implementation will decide their performance. Performance
measurement can be both subjective and objective. Performance of organizations on these measures

many records of floods in the past and some very minor earthquakes. There are still dangers of floods
and earthquakes, and many people live on the fault line, where it is expected to have a huge
earthquake in about 50 years. This large earthquake could destroy many homes and neighborhoods
and will cost the city a substantial amount of money to repair all of the damages.
Growth over time and space Population has increased a lot in Sandy. There were a few people in the
1900s, when the city was still developing. But ever since, the population has boomed. Sandy
experienced its biggest growth in 1970 1980, when the population increased 711%[5].

Here is a projection for future population trends in Sandy. It is expected that population growth will
expand steadily. By 2060, the population in Sandy would increase to over 145,000.

The population of Sandy is growing because Sandy is a physically attractive place. Many families are
coming to Sandy because it is a safe place to raise their children. There is a lot of economic

Social Norms And Social Aspects
Social norms are what the world or society view as acceptable ways to act. A social norm that I tend to
follow would be facing the front when riding on an elevator. This is one that I assume most people
follow, but I have actually been in a situation where someone walked on an elevator while they were
texting and never turned around. I had never thought about that being socially normal until someone
didn t face the door. However, it is only normal because the majority believes it s normal.
I believe that yielding to a majority s opinion is something that I rarely do. I speak up very quickly to
voice my opinion (perhaps sometimes a little too quickly). I have very strong beliefs and tend to let
people know about them. I also let people know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The social norm that I decided to violate was wearing my sweatshirt backwards the whole school day.
I wore it all day, even in the morning and at home. I also went so far as to wear it backwards to all of
my piano lessons that I teach. This was one of the main reasons I wanted to violate this particular
social norm. I knew that I would get good reactions out of my students. Before I put it on backwards,
honestly I was a little nervous even though this really isn t that big of a deal. I was also really excited
about wearing it in front of the kids I teach. I didn t get a lot of reactions at school so I was looking
forward to the lessons. When I answered the door for my first student, she gave me the funniest look,
but she didn t say anything to me. Instead, she just walked in and was silent for most of the lesson. My
second student asked so many questions when I tried to explain it to her.
The next student couldn t even focus on the lesson. She was about six years old so she couldn t stop
laughing every time she looked at me. When I would lean over to help her, she would pull on my
hood. Pretty soon, I ended up just having her play her songs the best she could so that she would
actually get something out of the lesson. I was actually laughing part of the time too because I really
didn t expect such big reactions.

  • 2. Apologetics New Generation Review 3: Sean McDowell, Apologetics for a New Generation (Harvest House, 2009) SUMMARY Apologetics for a New Generation is a compilation of essays from some of the greatest Christian minds geared towards answering the question: How do we use apologetics effectively to reach the new generations? It is clear that large numbers of youngsters view Christianity negatively. Relativism and postmodernism have eroded the mindset and values in our culture. Therefore, the immutable truths of Christianity need to be pitched differently to the current generation. Apologetics is more important than ever, but the manner in which we deliver truth is equally important: Christians must build relationships in the context of love, civility, wisdom and kindness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We need to retell the stories of old, the stories of Scripture and of Jesus Resurrection in ways that captivate the modern mind without compromising truth. This statement from Brian Godawa summarizes my take away from the book: The one who can tell the best story, in a very real sense, wins the epoch (131). As a left sided brain engineer (and not unlike Godawa), I expected my logical syllogisms to be devastating to atheism and that after seeing the undeniable logic in them, unbelievers would come to Christ in hordes. I am well aware that is unlikely to happen. I am convinced that the days when masses walk down the aisles in football stadiums to receive Christ are long gone. With the advent of relativism, postmodernism, and mass media, the modern apologist should adopt a distinct approach. From Apologetics for a New Generation and past experience I believe there are tree winning strategies for the modern apologist to win the new generations : (1) Storytelling: both Jesus and the Apostle Paul had the gift of storytelling. They took fact, encapsulated it in a context relevant and captivating story, and delivered it to those willing to hear. They were interesting, engaging, and truthful. They knew their culture and how to engage it. We ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is found that its construction is started back in the 3rd century during Mauryan emperor Ashoka s regime and researchers believe that it is one of the most ancient stone structures India has in its geographical boundary (Archaeological Survey of India). At the present time, it is in Sanchi town, situated in one of the India s states, Madhya Pradesh s Raisen district. This Buddhist pilgrimage attraction is not remained only as a tourist spot in India, but it has world s recognition as well. UNESCO has recognized its legacy and includes it in World heritage site category. In truth, it is one of the marvel architectures in India, which depicts ancient Buddhist art and architecture, of which construction and amendments spans into several different centuries (third century BC to the twelfth century AD) (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, 1989). For example, the Great Stupa of Sanchi has surrounded by a balustrade reminiscent of Sun s circuit. Further, having 28 posts, harmika balustrade represents the number of nakshatras (Subhash, 2010). Likewise, its orientation is also kept in line with the center of the structure and assigning a vector to determine the exact East West line on the date of the Spring equinox. Further, talking about its symbolism, Stupa, it represents freedom from the birth death cycle, and while its dome represents world egg and Buddha s life and other Jataka stories epitomize Buddha himself. These young adults do not know who they are or what they want to become. They are absolutely oblivious until the end of high school or even college. They have not developed their identity completely. Meanwhile, in the book Outliers, written by Malcolm Gladwell, it talks about certain characters who have developed their identity and stand out in history, such as Bill Gates and Bill Joy. It talks about how these successful people became successful. There are many aspects that contribute to the identity and success of someone. The development of one s identity plays an important role in one s future and determines who someone is; their identity is based off their skills, talents, and the background that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One s skills and talents define what someone does and how others perceive them. In Outliers, Gladwell speaks of the 10,000 Hour Rule . He says that if one practices a skill for 10,000 hours, then they will master that skill. Some musicians, like the Beatles, are known for their music and their musical talent, because they practiced over 10,000 hours. Their musical skills help develop their identity and how others recognize them. Also, the author states, The average person has an average IQ of one hundred, the voice over continued. Einstein one fifty. Chris has an IQ of one ninety five (Gladwell 70). This quote takes place during a game show, in which Chris is competing in. Since Chris has such a prodigious IQ, he has multiple skills in intelligence. This increases his chance in winning the game show. The jury performs a preliminary vote and the results came out to be eleven for guilty and one, the architect played by Henry Fonda, for not guilty. The rest of the jury then begins to persuade the architect that the accused is actually guilty. Each member of the jury played a key role in the development of the group and the task at hand. James Hurst s short story The Scarlet Ibis is full of symbolism. The use of symbolism does a great deal to add to the tone of the story by allowing large concepts to be depicted simply and subtlety, such as the characters emotions and the misfortune that befalls Doodle. The symbols that James Hurst uses range from the colors of the settings the characters are in to the scarlet ibis from which the book draws its name, with many others in between. By far the most important symbol Hurst uses is the ibis, because not only does it foreshadow the death of Doodle and his determination to survive, but shows that both it and Doodle were thrust into worlds where they were incapable to live and thrive. ... Comparing the Forgotten God of Love in Robert Bridges Poem EPÙÓ and Anne Stevenson s Poem Eros It is often in books, poems, paintings, and sculptures that one hears of and sees the goddess of love. But when is it that one hears of the god? In Greek mythology, Eros is the god of love, and a god who is many times overlooked. In Robert Bridges EPÙÓ and Anne Stevenson s Eros , the idea that Eros is overlooked is portrayed, but in two separate ways. Techniques such as diction, imagery, and tone are used to help convey the idea. EPÙÓ, Greek for Eros, is shown to be beautiful in Bridges poem: beautiful and adored, yet forgotten. After so many times of distributing love, but receiving no recognition, respect, or acknowledgement of any sort, Eros face just turned blank. Continuing on, Bridges writes, And would in darkness come, but thou makest the light wher er thou go. Ah yet no victim of thy grace. This shows the horrible state of disregard that Eros has to face. It is sad, that after all the satisfaction and light love gives, love himself isn t satisfied and is still enshrouded in the dark. Eros himself is forgotten. All the love Eros creates and instills in people stay, but Eros and even his memory is quickly overlooked and not given the proper gratitude and reverence. In Anne Stevenson s Eros, the god of love is shown to be broken and abused. Many negative words are used to emphasize Eros brokenness. He is described as a bully boy, a brute that offends, and is given blows delivered by lust. These words are not pleasant, as they illustrate an offensive, hurtful figure. As a slave to immortality, Eros is doomed to a bruised and battered visage for eternity. It is destined for him to endure such a future because of the nature of his job. These strong words of hate and hurt show the pain that love had to endure. The caller of love asks, Can this be you, with boxer lips and patchy wings askew? The chorus also typically comments on the moral issue in the play, for example in The Visit comments on the moral issue of if justice can be bought as well as provide insight into the play. Achilles, once a figure of godlike power and bravery, now appears a very mortal figure suffering from the brutality of war. His fall from heroism to barbarism is no less tragic and no less horrid, but is much more understandable when viewed as a psychological phenomenon only recently identified by modern psychology. This understanding of Achilles also serves to bridge the cultural and temporal gaps between Homeric society and our own. The Iliad provides compelling evidence that PTSD is a cross cultural and cross temporal disorder which warriors have experienced since time immemorial. From Troy to Vietnam and beyond, soldiers have suffered trauma from combat which has in turn caused them to inflict violence on others, as well as on themselves. Achilles almost cuts his own throat in the opening lines of Book 18, and refuses to eat, drink or bathe for most of the rest of The Iliad. While it is not the first thing that comes to mind when the sins are brought up, gluttony is a huge aspect of our society, referring to the overconsumption of goods and resources to the point of waste. Society today literally runs off of gluttony, where people on a daily basis are always after more, no matter how much they already have. This ties into greed on some levels, but it differs in that when people are gluttonous, they crave so much that things are being wasted or taken away from those who don t have much. It is almost ironic to think that as much as we encourage giving to local food banks or volunteering at soup kitchens, we are so gluttonous and waste so much food everyday that could go to other people who have nothing and are dying of starvation. Gluttony is extremely present in the film, specifically Augustus Gloop, who practically eats his feelings. In almost all of the clips we see of him, his is shoving down sweets, particularly the scene in the film where he falls into the chocolate river after trying to drink from it. Alternatively, Violet Beauregard can be seen as the best fit character for gluttony, shown when she steals the gum from Mr. Wonka, despite him telling her not to. Another arena of technology use is for school, both, parents and teachers believe technology helps enhance learning. Although technology is meant to be useful in different scenarios, it does not always mean it is healthy. For example, as suggested in a study Students who use less technology, score higher on reading exam versus those who use technology above the average (Bremmer, 2016). Society has evolved to misuse technology in many unhealthy ways; these negative uses have many ramifications for individuals. With the advancement of technology, communication is far more convenient for today s society, especially with long distance relationships. People with family, friends, and loved ones who are miles away now can video chat easily through apps, on their devices, such as FaceTime or Skype. The commands values can be seen in the verbiage in the artifacts, e.g. technical rigor, investing in people, equal opportunity. After the annual employee surveys are analyzed the CO and TD meet with each department to report the results of the survey and the action items the CO will take to address any problems identified. • 35. History of the Fire Service The History of the Fire Service Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about 7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major piece of firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the fuel and prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to escape a burning building. ... In 1829, a steam fire engine was built in London, but the volunteer fire companies were stuck in the olden days and they were slow to accept it, but in Cincinnati, Ohio, the public forced the firefighters to use the steam engines. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology to develop the first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was struck, and boxes were placed all over the city. Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull their engine. Before long, horses became a part of the fire service all over the country (Hashagan). Many of the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the front of the engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians were chosen as fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also because they guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of the fire house (Hashagan). In the year 1870, the aerial ladder wagon appeared. This enabled the firefighters to reach high places, tall buildings, and made putting out fires and rescuing trapped victims easier. Many early immigrants created a visible Irish community which was sustained by many different key structures, this community stayed relatively together into the early twentieth century. After that, many of the descended Irish immigrants gradually began to mold into a more general Catholic American subgroup, though a smaller core of very ethnic Irish still remain to this time.
