A year after shirtwaist workers thought they had won a war, the Triangle Fire proved that it had
merely been a battle. Under the Triangle Shirtwaist Company owners, Max Blanck and Isaac
Harris, the men and women laboring to sew waist skirts were dissatisfied with their terrible
working conditions and low wages. While working, the garment workers, made up of mostly
poor Italian and Jewish women immigrants, would constantly be yelled at and called sexist slurs
by bosses, and forced to work long, tiring hours for little pay (Argersinger 11). Tired of these
conditions, the workers of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York met in secret to form a
union against the company in September 1909 (Argersinger 11). The union of the garment
workers acquired the backing of both the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the
Women s Trade Union League, which inspired many other women, both working and upper
classes, to follow the older unions lead and join the garment workers fight. Accordingly, thousands
of garment workers launched an eleven week strike on November 22, 1909, which became known
as the Uprising of Twenty Thousand (Argersinger 11 12). The strikes were successful because they

In the case of the National Trust for Historical Preservation (this will be referred to in the future
as NTHP in this paper), the concept is reflected in their decision to break away from government
funding. Because Congress had designated them as a trust, they had a large portion of their budget

Most people hear about meditation from their families and friends but have little knowledge of
what the practice actually entails. Before joining my Masters Program in the field led by my
experienced and knowledgeable Professor Sophie Sore, I was both nervous and excited. I had no
prior experience with meditation neither visualization and had was still unsure of how the learning
experience would turn out. My friends had made comments that they had lost their minds after their

Abstract
This paper explores the change that General Motors faced after the economic recession and credit
crisis that began in 2007. This pushed GM to request assistance from the U.S. Treasury which
resulted in the restructuring of their US operations. The start of this restructuring change involved

GM s structural change is an example of retrenchment, which is done by centralizing/specializing a
firm s operations to sustain or improve productivity (Palmer et al., 2009).
Downsizing is generally regarded as midrange or second order change . A second order change is
transformational, radical, and fundamentally alters the organization at its core. Second order
change entails not developing but transforming the nature of the organization (Palmer et al., 2009).
Furthermore, GM s downsizing can be seen as a type 2 transformation, which involves the
revitalization of already established companies... where the organization remains in the same
market but focuses on how to rebuild itself in order to operate more effectively (Palmer et al.,
2009). GM remained in the automotive industry but needed to restructure and downsize in order to
mitigate the effects of the economic recession.
In its restructuring, GM closed plants, cut its workforce, shed three brands, reduced debt,
introduced popular new vehicles, and implemented changes to reduce retiree legacy costs, which
had been a major financial drain (Canis Webel, 2013). Cuts were made based on whether a person
s position was deemed redundant, the level of their subject matter expertise, and performance
