Winter Driving Research Paper
No one looks forward to winter driving with its snow and ice covered roads. These conditions also
increase the risk of multi car pileup accidents, especially when motorists continue to drive as though it
were summer. If another s negligent or reckless driving injured you in a winter accident, get in touch
with an experienced accident attorney.
Avoid a multi car pileup this winter by following these tips:
Reduce your speed. The slippery conditions reduce your ability to steer and brake. Higher speeds
reduce this further and make your car less stable on the road. Drive at a much slower speed and stay in
the slow driving lanes. The leftmost passing lanes are preferred by impatient and aggressive drivers.
Increase following distances. More distance

Automobiles and Pollution Essay
Automobiles and Pollution
In years past, levels of air, noise, and sight pollution were much lower than they are today. There are
more cars on the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than before.
The automobile is probably the leading contributor pollution in our cities. They release toxic
emissions into our atmosphere. Automobiles are linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution.
They are noisy (especially if you are living near the highway), and they take up valuable space in the
form of vast parking lots that are unpleasing to the eye. Why are there more automobiles on the road
today than there was in the past? Understanding the answer to this question is important when trying

Americans are known for our passion for the automobile. The automobile symbolizes freedom and
independence. Freedom is the backbone of our country. Many of our historical documents were
written with freedom as the major theme. For example, the declaration of independence proposes
freedom from an oppressive government. Freedom is a concept that most Americans take pride in. For
this reason, the automobile is attractive to us. If you own your own automobile, you are free to go any
place you like whenever you want. You suddenly become independent and you no longer have to rely
on other people for rides. This is a common feeling among 16 year olds. With the acquisition of the
drivers license comes a whole new world of opportunity and responsibility.
Another factor to be considered is the American concept of time. Time is money. Because of this we
are usually in a hurry, so we hop in our cars and off we go, late for some sort of an appointment. We
could use alternate forms of transportation like busses or railways which decrease pollution by
decreasing the total number of cars on our roads, but these forms of transportation are not as
convenient as driving ourselves. After all, time is money and I m late for a class. I don t have time to
wait for the bus. Is this

Drums History
Drums have existed for a very long time. Some say they even date back to 6000 BC. It is no wonder
then, that they have been used for a variety of situations and have evolved to create a wide range of
different types. This being said, all drums, or membranophones (the technical classification), consist
of at least one drum head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by hand or
instrument to produce its sound. Most commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part of the
percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day s rock bands. Throughout
the world, drums have been created from many materials, including wood, metal, plastic and even
clay.
The material of the drum skin can also vary from place to place, culture to culture. The skins of
assorted animals such as goats, sheep and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A drum can have two heads on either side of the body, or alternatively, one drum head on the top of
the body. There are drums which have been designed to be easy to carry around, such as those used in
street parades, and drums which are immobile.
When we listen to music such as rock, the drums we are hearing are inevitably part of the
aforementioned drum kit a selection of drums that are non pitched and can be used together in
harmony. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of
music genres can use them to create their preferred sound.
The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking
about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller kick drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums
are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick drum is the largest
drum in a drum kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. The last one mentioned, the pitched bass drum, is
a popular choice for marching parades and the drums

Descriptive Essay On The Pond
The Pond
It was only supposed to be a nice day at the pond. Although it was summer, most of the days had been
muggy, and under 65 degrees. Finally, Beyulah and I had a breakthrough. We woke with the sun
shining through my window and a 80 degree forecast, so we packed a water bottle, sparkling cider,
and a pack of Twix™ and got onto our bikes.
Immediately we encountered a problem. As we reached the main road, a huge construction truck was
parked at the end of my street, we found the road was being repaved. The workers said that we could
wait for the pilot car and ride along with the cars, so that s what we began to do. But, as we sat, the
sun beating down on us, Beyulah and I couldn t stand it any longer. We hopped back on our bikes, and
started riding down the other dirt road that looped through houses then back to the main road.
We got a little over a mile up that road when I had an idea. We can keep going down here and get
there normally, or we can ride down one of these older sketchy trails I used to ride that ll be faster. We
made the obvious decision and started down the shortcut. This was, as we found, the wrong decision.
I was in front of Beyulah, navigating all the old paths. Unfortunately, being in front meant taking the
brunt of all the huge, sticky spiderwebs that had been weaved across the trail. I d hit the web, panic
and almost crash, causing beyulah to break hard and fall over. We d get back up, rinse and repeat for
about another mile. Once we were back

A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest J. Gaines Essay
While we all would agree that racism is immoral and has no place in a modern society, that was not
the case in the U.S. in the 1940s. At the time African Americans were treated as second class citizens,
it was made near impossible for them to vote, and they were discriminated in many ways including in
education, socially and in employment. It was a time in which segregation and racism perforated the
laws and society, a time in which African Americans were separate but equal, segregation was legal
and in full force. Apartheid was also everywhere from the books to in society. Blacks were not truly
seen as equal as they were seen the the lesser of the two and it very much felt that way. Blacks were
oppressed in many ways including having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stance that is taken in the court to criminalize Jefferson is detrimental because they make
Jefferson lose his dignity as a man. Jefferson is compared to something that is seen as a rodent, and
taking such a stance makes Jefferson lose all the hope that he has. When the defense referred to
Jefferson as a boy and not a man, jefferson was being talked down by the side that was supposed to be
his own. This a Man? No, not I. I would all it a boy and a fool (Gaines 7). Jefferson is being talked to
like a boy, a fool. It is implied that he is inexperienced and he didn t know what he was doing as much
as a toddler wouldn t. While the defense was on his side, it referred to him as a fool because of the
color of his skin. The defense is making out Jefferson to be an innocent bystander and in the process
making jefferson seem to be a manchild. It is not only making Jefferson seem like he was too idiotic to
move out of the way, he is also being dehumanized. I would just as soon put a hog in the electric chair
as this (Gaines ). When the defense compares Jefferson to a hog, he is saying that Jefferson is just as
insignificant. It s dehumanizing in that Jefferson is made out to be an insignificant low life. Jefferson s
defence is getting a point across, but it s not the right one because I don t want them to kill no hog, she
said. I want a man to go to that chair, on his own two feet. (Gaines 13) In this quote Miss Emma wants

Theme Of White In Tamburlaine
Only in one or two situations, white is used in connection with military actions, notably in the
reference to Brave horses bred on the white Tartarian hills (p.10) that destroy the bowels of his
enemies, or, in the same speech, the allusion to victory resting herself upon my milk white tent. (p.35)
It can be noted that the only consistent use of the impression of whiteness in relation to war is in
connection with the white tents which Tamburlaine displays on the first day as a sign of mercy for
peaceful surrender, before the gloomy red and black colours are displayed on successive days. The
messenger reports to the Soldan of Egypt:
Here there is a connection between the white colours of mercy and Zenocrate, whom Tamburlaine

For example, Mycetes horses with their milk white legs fantastically splashed with crimson blood are
a decorative detail. When Tamburlaine says that he will Batter the shining palace of the Sun, /And
shiver all the starry firmament (p.89), Marlowe reaches the highest of purely decorative imagery.
Ellis Fermor considers that in Tamburlaine, there is much that is not effective rhetoric. In this case,
Marlowe s images are not in harmony with the emotions forming the background of the passage and
serve rather to illustrate them than to imply any association. There is no harmony between the
individual image and its setting. The imagery in Tamburlaine does not lack power, though it is most
effective when one rhetorical image leads on to another. Tamburlaine s description of his triumph in
the last act of Part I is an example of such effective, cumulative series of little pictures which
according to Ellis Fermor no one... can be picked out as having the quality of poetry. There are
showers of blood and meteors in Africa, there are mentions of Jove, the Furies and Death, dead kings

Burmese Pythons And Their Effect On Native Species
BURMESE PYTHONS
Stephanie Diaz

Dr. Marguerite Koch
Principles of Ecology
Introduction
Burmese Pythons and their effect on native species in the Everglades Burmese Pythons is a non native
pest in the United States of America, which originated from South Asia. The species is becoming an
established breeding population in South Florida and its environs. The python was illegally freed in
the Everglades National park where the marshy grasses and water provide a conducive environment
for its survival. Burmese python was recognized as a reproducing population around the year 2000.
The python has been classified as an invasive species in Florida. The species has disrupted the
ecosystem by preying on native species and out competing them for food. The python is a successful
invasive species because their large size makes it have fewer predators (alligators and humans)
(Brown, 2006). Efforts have been put in place to manage the increase of the Burmese pythons due to
the devastating effects it has caused in the ecosystem. Python removal and control is being done
through dogs and human search. Dog search has recorded much greater success than human beings
because humans cannot access some areas due to the thick vegetation. The origin of Burmese python
can be attributed to the regions of South East Asia including Burma,Thailand, China, and the regions
of Archipelago. There is continued decrease of the python in its native land, which has placed

Perspective On Reading
The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of the literature regarding an historical perspective
on reading instruction in schools, and the balanced literacy philosophy. This information provides a
background from which to better understand how the balanced literature approach to reading
instruction has come to exist, and the tasks that are part of this philosophy for the teacher. Then, more
specific information is examined from the Crowley Independent School District regarding how the
balanced literacy framework is implemented within that district. In addition, various curriculum
documents are discussed in order to better understand how the CISD implements its balanced literacy
program. Furthermore, the professional development and support for the reading initiative that occurs
at the district and campus levels is discussed, along with the leadership that is provided within the
schools to help teachers successfully carry out the balanced literacy program.

In this regard, there was a focus on the part of researchers about how teachers could use proper actions
and behaviors, as well as proper rewards and punishments to encourage and motivate children to read.
As part of this view that reading was a conditioned or even programmed behavior in children, phonics
became the primary way in which reading instruction occurred in schools. Researchers believed that
teaching phonics provided a way in which children would learn the basic components of language,
and would be able to improve reading skills in a logical manner. Phonics made it possible for children
to first learn letter sounds, then put those sounds together to learn words, and then put words together

Presidential Election Process Of The United States
Presidential Election Process The election process in the United States can be overwhelming and
confusing. Firstly, how a citizen can be eligible to become a Presidential candidate? What are the
requirements or the qualifications that a person needs to be a candidate? With that in mind, the
candidates get to sponsor for their electoral campaigns from what type of funds and from whom?
People need to know the type of character that a candidate demonstrates. America has become very
demanding. There are a lot of things that consume our lives and we are not giving enough importance
to the Elections Process. The U.S. Census found that only 47 percent of eligible adults with family
incomes of less than $20,000 a year voted in the 2012 presidential election, compared to 80 percent of
those whose earnings exceeded $100,000. Overall, only 19 percent of likely voters come from families
with incomes of less than $30,000 a year, even though that same group comprises 46 percent of
nonvoters. Americans should get more involved in the election process for our democracy to continue
because only a certain part of the population vote and get involved in the process. The United States is
a hectic place to live; many people say they are too busy to wait in line to vote. A survey executed by
the California Voter Foundation (CVF) found, that there are 6.4 million Californians who are eligible
but unregistered to vote. As well, 28% of infrequent voters and 23% of those unregistered said they do

Components Of Thermoregulation ( Tm ) Systems And The...
Phase change materials are widely used source of thermoregulation (TM) systems and in latent
thermal energy storage (LTES). PCMs capability to absorb and release large latent heat during phase
change transition processes provides a wide range of phase change temperatures for thermal
management systems. The incorporation of PCMs can achieve the same or even better performances
with a smaller volume. PCMs can meet the thermoregulation requirements of various applications.
Currently, the low thermal conductivity of PCMs (usually less than 1 W mK−1) greatly limits their
heat dissipation performance in thermal management applications. Currently main focus of research is
to increase the thermal conductivity of the PCMs. In this regard different kinds of materials such as
metal and carbon composites with PCMs are produced. The intensive experimental and theoretical
investigation are made to improve the performance of PCMs. This paper discusses in detail the
fabrication and thermal conductance measurement techniques, and mathematical modeling of PCMs
composites. Moreover applications of PCMs in TM and LTES system are also mentioned with
examples.

HERSHEY FOODS CORPORATION:

Synopsis and Objectives
The proposed sale of Hershey Foods Corporation (HFC) during the summer of 2002 captured
headlines and imaginations. After all, Hershey was an American icon, and when the company s largest
shareholder, the Hershey Trust Company (HSY), asked HFC management to explore a sale, the story
drew national and international attention. The company s unusual governance structure put the
Hershey Trust s board in the difficult position of making both an economic and a governance decision.
On the one hand, the board faced a challenging economic decision that centered on determining
whether the solicited bids provided a fair premium for HFC ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To facilitate the valuation aspect of the analysis, free cash flow forecasts are provided in case Exhibit
10 for Hershey as a stand alone entity. Most students should find it easy to calculate a value for
Hershey using the discounted cash flow (DCF) method and industry comparable multiples, which also
are provided. As with any valuation case, students must make judgments about the appropriate capital
structure, the weighted average cost of capital (WACC), sales growth, and the terminal growth rate.
Once students have explored the value drivers for Hershey though sensitivity analysis, they may then
evaluate the bids from both Nestlé S.A. Cadbury Schweppes PLC (NCS) and the Wm. Wrigley Jr.
Company. They will want to examine whether the bids are fair from the perspective of HFC
shareholders and whether the synergies assumed by the bidders in their offer prices are reasonable.
The instructor may vary the emphasis on different issues by altering the study questions and by the
choice of video clips. The case is well suited for courses and classes concerning corporate governance,
valuation, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate social responsibility. The following objectives of
the case allow students to:

Anime And Stereotypes
From what I have experienced through what I know of the anime world, I constantly make the
assumption that most anime follows the same plot, according to their genre, simply just with different
characters. Watching the new anime that come out each season, my mindset is that of already knowing
what is going to happen, or how the show will ultimately end. Another assumption that I find myself
making is that most female anime characters are portrayed in a sexual manner. It is a rare sight in
modern anime to find an anime without an overly explicit female character. In regards to the impact
my assumptions will have on my inquiry and writing, I find that my assumptions may create a bias

Why I Want To Be An Emergency Medical Technician Essay
Being an emergency medical technician (EMT) is a lot of work. Let alone becoming one. There are
plenty of different requirements for becoming an EMT. To become an EMT, you must first meet the
minimum requirements for certification. They vary from state to state, but here are the basic
requirements that are common among almost all states:
Must be 18 years old
Completed high school, or GED
Completion of approved EMS training courses
Pass the National Registry exam

Personally, I love helping people and chaotic situations are great for me. Getting past all the
requirements and gaining all of the qualifications I need will be easy for me. I m planning on moving
up from an EMT B to an EMT I and then, eventually, to a paramedic.
EMTs are the first responders to emergency situations such as car accidents or heart attacks, providing
immediate care to the critically injured and the severely sick on site and then transporting them to the
hospital in an ambulance. They are usually the first professionals to come in contact with patients at
emergency scenes. In addition to administering lifesaving medical care, they must interact with family
members and witnesses who may be very emotional, or even mentally deranged. How professionals
manage these situations can mean the difference between success and failure. ... Show more content

The Ministry Of Catholic Educations
The Ministry of Catholic Educations says that youth ministry is a response to the mission entrusted by
Christ. God told his disciples in Matthew chapter twenty eight verse nineteen Go and make disciples
of all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. And youth
ministry is one of the many ways the Catholic Church is doing this.
As stated in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, recreational workers create programs that can be
altered to specific age groups. Being a youth minister you encounter many different things. Like
recreational workers, youth minister put together programs for both middle school and high school.
The Arch Dioceses send a lesson plan of what the students should know by the end of the year. The
youth ministers will then branch together similar topics and make that the main focus for the night.
The themes revolve around the four pillars of the Catholic Church. According to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church these four pillars are faith, liturgy and sacraments, morality of our life and prayer.
This program is a fun an interesting way to bring these teenagers to Christ. A typical night starts with
snacks and games to start building a community and then officially starts with a prayer. One of the
reasons we pray is to calculate disengagement which is transitioning the students into a more prayerful
mode for the rest of the night. After prayer we go into a talk prepared by the minister and sometimes

Taking a Look at Emmanuel College
Founded 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay. Named after Jesus (Emmanuel). Sister College Exeter College
Oxford. Men and Women Undergraduates 487 Postgraduates 140. Emmanuel College, affectionately
referred to as Emma, only ever gives the casual passer by a brief glimpse of its gorgeous site, keeping
most of its vast spaces a secret. Hidden behind the college owned houses and high walls, is a lush and
green site complete with a lake containing giant fish and cherished ducks; neither ever having featured
on the hall menu. There is some dispute with Lady Margaret Hall in Oxford as to who produces the
most intelligent mallards in the country. The informal gardens, known as the Paddock, provide the
social epicentre in the warmer weather and students are allowed to work and play on the grass. This
contrasts with the formal Front Court, which is sacrosanct and only ducks and the occasional fellow
are allowed to venture. The snowmen that appear, as if by magic, in the bleak mid winter nights are
tolerated as long as they deliver their essays on time. Strong equal opportunities policy The college is
right in the city centre next to the bus station and is home to 140 postgraduates and 487
undergraduates, in a roughly equal gender divide. Women were first admitted in 1979. Emmanuel

The Characters Of Johnny And Outsiders In The Outsiders
Two different age kids in The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, turn out to have a lot in common but, also a
lot dissimilar. Johnny and Dally both do not have a strong relationship with their abusive, neglectful
parents but, at least they have the gang. On the other hand, Dally likes to fight and Johnny does not, so
in the end Johnny dies as someone to look up to and Dally dies a thief. Throughout the story they both
show different emotions towards their parents, gang members, and each other. Johnny and Dally have
a lot in common, and one of them is that they do not really have people to call their family, so they
call their gang their family. When Darry hits Ponyboy, Pony runs to Johnny, who is sleeping in the lot,
and tells him they are running away because of what Darry did to him. Johnny then explains to
Ponyboy that he does not have family and Pony yells at him saying, Shoot, you got the whole gang.
Dally didn t slug you tonight cause you re the pet. I mean, golly Johnny, you got the whole gang (51).
Even though Johnny s parents do not treat him nicely, he still needs to understand that he has people
that care for him, and that he is not alone. Later on in the story, Johnny is dying. While he is still alive
his mother comes to see him, but he does not want to see her because she will give him grief. When
Johnny dies, Dally is devastated. He is so angry that he goes and robs a grocery store. As the police
chase him, he goes to a phonebooth and calls the Curtis home. Darry

The Food Safety Is A Highly Overlooked Essay
Food safety is a highly overlooked yet crucial aspect of the food industry, as evident in the deadly
1993 Escherichia Coli outbreak in multiple Jack in the Box locations. Escherichia Coli is prevalent in
raw and undercooked ground beef, which is a common food item on the Jack in the Box menu; the
bacterial contamination during the slaughtering process of the meat lead to this gut wrenching
epidemic (Wiley 2013). The horrific E. coli outbreak could have been prevented if it were not for Jack
in the Box s meat supplier Vons, Foodmaker s vice president of technical services Ken Dunkley, and
Jack in the Box s President Bob Nungent. The 1993 Jack in the Box E. Coli outbreak could have been
prevented firstly if the contaminated meat itself had never set foot in a single Jack in the Box
establishment. It was made evident upon an interview with Jack in the Box s President Bob Nugent
that the testing that was done on that particular batch of meat indicated that it had high levels of E.
coli. It is their responsibility to notify us if there s any potential hazard with a product. We were
notified of those high levels of E. coli after the outbreak. So without notification, we couldn t take any
measures to preclude it . (Benedict 2011). Vons broke the Meat inspection Act, as it is a federal law
that spells out the food codes it is a breach of warranty to sell or distribute food that is contaminated or
adulterated (Benedict 2011). This initial error on Von s part gave leeway for

The Tortilla Curtain Analysis
In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal
immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an
immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white
middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat,
over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends
into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes
from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more
desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and
Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery,
applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at
Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of
suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in
the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable
(215). The coyote described is clearly a symbol for illegal immigrants, and, more specifically,
Candido. Each phrase is a specific reference to a dynamic or event of the story: the trail

Rap Or Hip Hop Is More Than Just Another Music Genre
Rap or Hip Hop is more than just another music genre, it is a movement full of more aspects than one
could imagine. The film The Art of Rap directed, produced, and hosted by Ice T, exemplifies the
different aspects and explains the importance of Hip Hop while taking a journey interviewing many
legendary MC s, giving the viewer an inside perspective of this music and the art of MC ing. This film
also heavily resonates with the book Rap Music and Street Consciousness. Ice T interviews many
influential and important MC s in the rap game, both old school and new school, enabling the viewer
to really gain knowledge on the role of the MC. Three MC s interviewed that really explain the role of
the MC is Grandmaster Caz, Ice T, and Big Daddy Kane. During Grandmaster Caz s interview, he
explains how he started out as an MC, taking his parents old funk and soul records and rapping over
the beats. He believes the most important part of rap is the lyrics, explaining his technique of trying to
go beyond what the next MC is going to do. Throughout the film, Ice T adds in his own commentary
about the MC and being one himself has important points about the role of the MC. Ice T stresses the
MC has a gift of communication and states the MC, Gets everybody s attention with displays of verbal

Joy Luck Club Culture
A culture s beliefs, traditions, and family structure can heavily influence the lives of its followers. In
The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan, the resilient Chinese cultures of its characters impact their
lives in many ways, sometimes causing hardships. This book includes the intertwined stories of four
mothers who are Chinese immigrants to San Francisco, and their American born daughters. Tan writes
about the relationships between the mothers and daughters and highlights the cultural differences
between Americans and Chinese. Each chapter travels deeper into the secrets and past of these four
women s families. As seen in The Joy Luck Club, the Chinese value of ancestors, family structure, and

The cultural beliefs impacted the characters of this book is when Lena recalled her mother telling her
that if a spouse didn t eat their food, the other spouse would develop pock marks on their face. In the
book it states, If my mother had been in the room, she would have told me these poor people were
victims of future husbands and wives who had failed to eat platefuls of food (153). When Lena heard
this warning as a little girl, she also thought that she would have to marry a neighborhood boy named
Arnold, who she loathed. She proceeded into leaving her rice uneaten, so that Arnold would develop
more marks. A couple years later, she wasn t eating and suffered with anorexia. The consequence on a
little tale that her mother told her eventually took over her life and altered the way she treated her
body. Another belief of the Chinese is that one should not stress so much, to go with the flow and not
try to control everything that isn t going right. In Lena St. Clair s chapter, she mentions her worry that
one day, her husband, Harold, will wake up and not want to be with her anymore. In her chapter, she
says, Or that maybe it was because when you re Chinese you re supposed to accept everything, flow
with the Tao and not make waves... (156). Lena was living in constant fear that the man she loved
would leave her, so she didn t want to speak up for herself when something felt wrong in their
relationship. Lena struggled between the Chinese beliefs to not make waves and accept the situation
and speaking up for herself and feel in control of the relationship. Finally, the practice of the Chinese
zodiac impacted Ying Ying St. Claire s life in The Joy Luck Club. The Chinese zodiac consists of 12
animals depending on the year one was born. The animals represent different personalities and spirits.

The Will To Believe Is A Philosophical Essay Written By
The Will to Believe is a philosophical essay written by William James. In the book, James focused on
the concepts of genuine choice and forced beliefs. His argument is that individuals have choices to
believe; however, those choices are shaped around facts and forced beliefs. He also argues on religious
hypotheses and the concept of belief without reason.
The first problem James tackles is genuine options. He disagrees with Clifford on the idea of genuine
options. He believes that there are certain things which we cannot wait for efficient evidence before
we make a claim. Those things are the ones where religious faith is intellectually acceptable. He states
that genuine belief is living, forced and momentous. A living belief will be ... Show more content on

We are supposed to gain, even now, by our belief, and to lose by our non belief (James 136).
According to James, science says things are, morality says things are better than other things, and
religion says essentially two things. Firstly, she says things that the best things are the more eternal
things (...) the things in the universe that throw the last stone (James 136). The second one states that
we are better off if we believe her first affirmation to be true.
Furthermore, religion is momentous force because the answer to these religious force is all up to you,
there is no intellectual ground to answer the questions. Therefore, James is saying, if you are a theist,
there is nothing wrong in choosing to believe that there is a God, also, if you are atheist, there is
nothing wrong in choosing to believe there is no God. This is because it takes as much faith to say
there is no God as that there is a God. Therefore, according to James, we can believe or not believe
based on our irrational passions alone.
In addition, James lays out the problem of choosing to believe. He argues that people are inherent
believers by nature and that they do not choose to believe.
There are some flaws in James argument. Firstly, his claim that belief in God is live, forced and
momentous and cannot be decided on intellectual means. The question of whether God is live has only
to do with the individual. There are some theists that are so dogmatist that they would

Title Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is an inadequate measure of societal well being and should be

Human Development Index (HDI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In this discussion I will argue
for HDI as a fairer comparison of a country s overall economic wealth health and social well being
rather than the generally accepted method used by most countries of GDP. HDI allows for a more
comprehensive understanding of well being than purely economic measurements like GDP, and better
identifies areas of need within countries. GDP is basicially a measure of a country s overall economic

It would causes prices rise which in turn means people have to pay more for the same goods and

declines even if they are making more. Taking China as an example, China s obsession with high GDP
growth is part of the economics problem (http://www.businessinsider.com/china inflation hits new
high 2011 5, May, 2011). In 2010, over half of GDP growth was due to investment in fixed assets,
much of it fueled by cheap money and easy credit. Because of the rates of GDP growth due to
personal assets such as a reasonable investment, integration, inflation may bring assets to face a
serious risk of shrinking in the future. As Chovanec stated that the real challenge for China isn t
racking up ever higher GDP figures, but putting its economy on a more sustainable footing going

called HDI was introduced to measure human development. This index focuses on three basic

The Nightingale Quotes
This quote is a flashback from an elderly Vianne, and it is the first line in the book. This quote
foreshadows the effect that war has on many characters, and how such a horrible event can put
everything under a microscope and show the courageous battles fought, and not just by the soldiers.
War is an abhorrent event that has the ability to destroy everything. That is no different in the novel
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The Nightingale is about two French sisters, Vianne and Isabelle
Rossignol and tells their stories while living in a German occupied France. Right from the very
beginning, it seems that the two sisters have completely opposite characteristics. When Vianne was 14
and Isabelle was 4 their mother died. This is obviously a very emotional time for the two and they
both cope with the death of their mother in very different ways. Vianne is forced to take over the
mother role which is courageous at any age, but at 14 it is simply gallant: You will be the mother now.
Her father said to Vianne while her eyes were swollen from crying, her grief unbearable (7). Vianne
did not even have the opportunity to cope with her mother s loss before she had to fill her mother s
shoes, whose shoes were not easy to fill by any means. Isabelle on the other hand is a fiercely
rebellious girl who refuses to listen to anyone. She is expelled from a dozen boarding schools
throughout her teenage years, and she is unwilling to settle down and be the proper lady her father so
desperately wishes her to be. At the beginning of the novel, both sisters appear to have distinctive
differences in regard to their personality and values.
In 1940, the war begins to intensify at a rapid rate, and it appears that when the war begins the
rebellious side of Isabelle will end up costing her her life or someone around her. The difference in the
two sisters is evident when Sophie questions why they have to relinquish their radio to the Germans,
and Isabelle immediately decides to hide it , and Vianne reacts by telling Isabelle that they will do as
we are told (99). This is a perfect example of different types of courage between the two sisters.
Isabelle s courage is bold and impulsive as she never thinks about the consequences

Types Of Diffusion And Diffusion
gy
2) All plants and animals are made up of cells and all cells are surrounded by a membrane. Any ion or
molecule that the cell needs to either use or get rid of requires the ability to move through the cell
membrane. Diffusion in plant and animal cells is the spontaneous net movement of ions and molecules
from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, this is also referred to as moving
down a concentration gradient. The movement of molecules and ions during diffusion is known as
passive transport because they move as a result of their own kinetic energy. Although the kinetic
energy is random in its movement due to the concentration gradient there will be net movement until
dynamic equilibrium is reached. The rate of diffusion depends on the distance the molecule needs to
travel, temperature, solubility, concentration gradient and the size of the molecule. Diffusion is
dependent on the molecules being able to pass through the cell membrane, however, diffusion does not
require a membrane in order to take place.
There are three different types of diffusion:
Simple diffusion some small molecules that are non polar pass through a membrane.
Channel diffusion larger, polar molecules are helped across the membrane by proteins that are
embedded in the membrane creating a gateway for the molecules to pass through.
Facilitated diffusion carrier proteins bind to certain molecules and release them on the other side of the
membrane.
If cells need

The Uniform Crime Report Is Perceived By The International...
The Uniform Crime Report also knowns as the UCR, is a program that was perceived by the
International Association of Chiefs of Police in 1929. This program was essentially created to provide
consistent, uniform crime statistics. Around 1930, Congress sanctioned the U.S. attorney general to
assess crime in the United States (NACJD, 2010). Thus allowing the UCR program to get underway,
tasking the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), with the jobs of gathering, circulating, and
archiving all crime statistics gained. Currently, they are multiple publications that publish crime
statistics produced from information given by more than 17,000 law agencies in the United States
(NACJD, 2010). The Uniform Crime Report is not only used to provide current crime statistics, but it
is also used to analyze and report rather criminalities have increased or decreased though out the year
in comparison to previous years (Maltz, 1999). In this essay, it will briefly discuss what is included in
the UCR; the revelations obtained from 2008 UCR as well as the downfalls of the UCR.
UCR is a crime reporting database used to identify and keep track of the information and crime data
that is reported by law enforcement agencies throughout the country. In collecting data for the UCR,
the FBI receives information from citizens to find out what crime they are aware has taken place in
their area (NACJD, 2010). Once that information is gathered, the FBI gathers information from the

extremely significant setting, as it is named after, and therefore is based on the mythological country
of the Lotus eaters . Evidently, as they enter, they are encouraged to eat lotus cookies, presented to
them by each passing staff member. These lotus shaped cookies make them lose track of time, dulls
their senses, and keeps them prisoner there, as they lose the will to leave. In Greek mythology, it was

It is clear that the film is directed at young children and family viewers with the purpose of educating
the audience of ancient Greek mythology in a modernised, child friendly method. This is clear in the
portrayal of the gods in their common modern American apparel instead of traditional Greek
clothing(see appendix A and B). A further example of this is when Percy Jackson uses the reflective
back of an iPod for combat with Medusa, as it allowed him to view her indirectly. In mythology,
Perseus used the reflective shield of Athene for the same purpose. The switching of the shield to an
item of modern technology emphasizes the modification of Greek myths in the film. Additionally,
Hermes winged boots were portrayed as winged Converse sneakers(See appendices C and D), given to
Percy by Luke, demigod son of Hermes/Hermes archetype. Converse sneakers are extremely popular
in the most recent generations/children of the modern day world, along with iPods, so the overall
effect of this modernisation of mythology is that no piece of equipment looks out of place. Moreover,
since the mythology in this movie has been modernised, it is a great way to entertainingly educate
people about ancient Greek mythology. To conclude, the target audiences of the film determined how
it adapted and modernised mythology for entertainment, as well as educational

Strategic Information Management Essay
Business Report 2000 words Answer the question below in an academically rigorous manner, using
business report style, with claims supported by referring to relevant literature. The assignment will
need to be a mix of your own intellectual property (interpretation and analysis) and evidence drawn
from published material to support your arguments, or the case you are building. You may make
appropriate assumptions about the case as required, but please note them in your report. The Case The
luxury clothing retailer Excellence, recently spent millions on IT for its futuristic exicenter store in
New York, but the flashy technology has turned into a high priced disaster. The company needed to ...

Excellence poured roughly 25% of the store s budget into IT, including a wireless network to link
every item to an Oracle inventory database in real time using radio frequency identification (RFID)
tags on the clothes. The staff would roam the floor armed with PDAs to check whether items were in
stock, and customers could do the same through touch screens in the dressing rooms. Each store
manager was an experienced retailer and was given responsibility for their overall exicenter
implementation, including the building and IT systems. The store managers were supported by the
architects and builders and by their in house IT staff, for whom the exicenter project was a new and
exciting opportunity. Although it proved difficult to integrate the different components of the project
and the IT testing schedule was minimised to meet a revised schedule, the project was eventually
finalised. But most of the flashy technology today sits idle, abandoned by employees who never quite
embraced computing chic and who are now too overwhelmed by large crowds to assist shoppers with
handhelds. On top of that, many gadgets, such as automated dressing room doors and touch screens,
are either malfunctioning or ignored. Packed with experimental technology, the clear glass dressing
room doors were designed to open and close automatically at the tap of a foot pedal, then turn opaque
when a second pedal sent an electric

Prison Litigation Reform Act Case Analysis
The influx of inmates in the late 1970s through 1980s led to unsustainable prions condition that
violated inmate s rights granted by the Eight Amendment. As the budgets were being exhausted,
transpired the issues of inmate s poor medical treatment, abusive physical security, and unsuitable
physical conditions (Newman and Scott 2013, 547). In the 1976 case of Estelle v. Gamble, the
Supreme Court of the United States established that an inmate s Eighth Amendment rights were
violated if prison personnel demonstrated deliberate indifference to a prisoner s serious illness or
injury (Newsman and Scott 2012, 548). The increased volume of filed lawsuits led to the passing of
the Prison Litigation Reform Act, which targeted frivolous lawsuits by limiting waivers for the
requirement that inmates pay filing fees, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the mandated reductions, the prison inmate s population would still be 137.5 % over its
allowed capacity (Liptak 2014). In opposition, the State of California submitted an appeal for the
federal order to the Supreme Court seeking protections under the Prison Litigation Reform Act
(Newsman and Scott 2012). In 2011, the Supreme Court 5 4 decision upheld three judge panel s
federal order requiring California state prisons to reduce its population by 30,000 inmates (Liptak
2014).The Supreme Court judges emphasized the notion that overcrowding inflicted pain on prisoners,
and, therefore, violated inmate s constitutional rights (Newsman and Scott 2012). After the Supreme
Court s decision, Jerry Brown advocated realignment in the state prisons that would transfer non
violent, non serous, and non sexual offenders to county jails (Ravi 2014). Likewise, to comply with
the federal order Brown allocated 6 billion in state funds to be transferred to counties aiding the
realignment reforms (Ravi

Many system and caregivers begin to be disconnected from the main campus and their leadership.
Simple issues, such as time differences, can create barriers to the inclusion of each piece of the
system. Control can be limited by time and space, creating issues with ensuring processes and
procedures are met for every patient. The high cost of healthcare is a weakness the Cleveland Clinic
shares with every other health system in operation. According to bea.gov, healthcare now comprises
17% of all expenditures in the US GDP. Containing costs and keeping healthcare affordable is a
struggle every health system faces. In June of 2017, Dr. Cosgrove announced his plans to retire at the
end of the year. His leadership has been strong and his vision to create a global health system has a
solid foundation built, it is time for him to step down. Although he intends to remain as a consultant,
there is great trepidation throughout the entire system as to what the future holds without Dr. Cosgrave

Taking a Stand on Land Forestry Wildlife Management
From the age of 15 I have had a job and was always better at work than school. It wasn t until recently
that I began to look back and decided I needed a change so, I made the choice to start college. My love
of fishing and the outdoors made the decision easy when it came to choosing my major, Land Forestry
Wildlife Management. Although the decision came easy and I feel it is the right career for me, there
are many issues, positive and negative, related to my field. Land Forestry Wildlife Management does a
lot of good for people and animals but can also hurt. Prescribe burning, wildlife control and forest
management are all big issues related to the field. Prescribed burning, also called controlled burns, has
many different purposes. The American Indians set fires to stimulate the growth of plants and keep
areas open to produce food (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Prescribed fires help
improve wildlife habitat and land quality. After the burns, the brush grows back greener and lusher,
providing nesting areas for animals such as deer. In addition, prescribed fires are a cheaper way to
manage vegetation as they require no bulldozing, cutting, or chemicals (Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources). Many argue that prescribed burning can be dangerous. To that I say with
everything there is good and bad. You must weigh the pros and cons and decide which outweighs the
other, for me that is the pros. Prescribed burning is a wonderful land management

  • 2. Winter Driving Research Paper No one looks forward to winter driving with its snow and ice covered roads. These conditions also increase the risk of multi car pileup accidents, especially when motorists continue to drive as though it were summer. If another s negligent or reckless driving injured you in a winter accident, get in touch with an experienced accident attorney. Avoid a multi car pileup this winter by following these tips: Reduce your speed. The slippery conditions reduce your ability to steer and brake. Higher speeds reduce this further and make your car less stable on the road. Drive at a much slower speed and stay in the slow driving lanes. The leftmost passing lanes are preferred by impatient and aggressive drivers. Increase following distances. More distance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Automobiles and Pollution Essay Automobiles and Pollution In years past, levels of air, noise, and sight pollution were much lower than they are today. There are more cars on the road today, and because of this we experience higher levels of pollution than before. The automobile is probably the leading contributor pollution in our cities. They release toxic emissions into our atmosphere. Automobiles are linked particularly to carbon monoxide pollution. They are noisy (especially if you are living near the highway), and they take up valuable space in the form of vast parking lots that are unpleasing to the eye. Why are there more automobiles on the road today than there was in the past? Understanding the answer to this question is important when trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Americans are known for our passion for the automobile. The automobile symbolizes freedom and independence. Freedom is the backbone of our country. Many of our historical documents were written with freedom as the major theme. For example, the declaration of independence proposes freedom from an oppressive government. Freedom is a concept that most Americans take pride in. For this reason, the automobile is attractive to us. If you own your own automobile, you are free to go any place you like whenever you want. You suddenly become independent and you no longer have to rely on other people for rides. This is a common feeling among 16 year olds. With the acquisition of the drivers license comes a whole new world of opportunity and responsibility. Another factor to be considered is the American concept of time. Time is money. Because of this we are usually in a hurry, so we hop in our cars and off we go, late for some sort of an appointment. We could use alternate forms of transportation like busses or railways which decrease pollution by decreasing the total number of cars on our roads, but these forms of transportation are not as convenient as driving ourselves. After all, time is money and I m late for a class. I don t have time to wait for the bus. Is this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is no wonder then, that they have been used for a variety of situations and have evolved to create a wide range of different types. This being said, all drums, or membranophones (the technical classification), consist of at least one drum head or drum skin. This is stretched over a shell and beaten either by hand or instrument to produce its sound. Most commonly it is used as a musical instrument as a part of the percussion group, to be used in rituals or entertainment such as modern day s rock bands. The sounds and rhythms one can create with a drum kit are so diversified that a number of music genres can use them to create their preferred sound. The bass drum is large and when played, creates a very low pitch. More specifically we are talking about the orchestral bass drum, the smaller kick drum and the pitched bass drums. Orchestral drums are the larger of the three and are primarily used in orchestral concerts. The kick drum is the largest drum in a drum kit and is utilized with a foot pedal. • 5. Descriptive Essay On The Pond The Pond It was only supposed to be a nice day at the pond. Although it was summer, most of the days had been muggy, and under 65 degrees. Finally, Beyulah and I had a breakthrough. We woke with the sun shining through my window and a 80 degree forecast, so we packed a water bottle, sparkling cider, and a pack of Twix™ and got onto our bikes. Immediately we encountered a problem. As we reached the main road, a huge construction truck was parked at the end of my street, we found the road was being repaved. The workers said that we could wait for the pilot car and ride along with the cars, so that s what we began to do. But, as we sat, the sun beating down on us, Beyulah and I couldn t stand it any longer. We hopped back on our bikes, and started riding down the other dirt road that looped through houses then back to the main road. We got a little over a mile up that road when I had an idea. We can keep going down here and get there normally, or we can ride down one of these older sketchy trails I used to ride that ll be faster. We made the obvious decision and started down the shortcut. This was, as we found, the wrong decision. I was in front of Beyulah, navigating all the old paths. Unfortunately, being in front meant taking the brunt of all the huge, sticky spiderwebs that had been weaved across the trail. I d hit the web, panic and almost crash, causing beyulah to break hard and fall over. We d get back up, rinse and repeat for about another mile. Once we were back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest J. Gaines Essay While we all would agree that racism is immoral and has no place in a modern society, that was not the case in the U.S. in the 1940s. At the time African Americans were treated as second class citizens, it was made near impossible for them to vote, and they were discriminated in many ways including in education, socially and in employment. It was a time in which segregation and racism perforated the laws and society, a time in which African Americans were separate but equal, segregation was legal and in full force. When the defense compares Jefferson to a hog, he is saying that Jefferson is just as insignificant. It s dehumanizing in that Jefferson is made out to be an insignificant low life. Jefferson s defence is getting a point across, but it s not the right one because I don t want them to kill no hog, she said. I want a man to go to that chair, on his own two feet. Theme Of White In Tamburlaine Only in one or two situations, white is used in connection with military actions, notably in the reference to Brave horses bred on the white Tartarian hills (p.10) that destroy the bowels of his enemies, or, in the same speech, the allusion to victory resting herself upon my milk white tent. (p.35) It can be noted that the only consistent use of the impression of whiteness in relation to war is in connection with the white tents which Tamburlaine displays on the first day as a sign of mercy for peaceful surrender, before the gloomy red and black colours are displayed on successive days. Ellis Fermor considers that in Tamburlaine, there is much that is not effective rhetoric. In this case, Marlowe s images are not in harmony with the emotions forming the background of the passage and serve rather to illustrate them than to imply any association. There is no harmony between the individual image and its setting. The imagery in Tamburlaine does not lack power, though it is most effective when one rhetorical image leads on to another. • 9. Burmese Pythons And Their Effect On Native Species BURMESE PYTHONS Stephanie Diaz Tuesday, June 21, 2016 Dr. Marguerite Koch Principles of Ecology Introduction Burmese Pythons and their effect on native species in the Everglades Burmese Pythons is a non native pest in the United States of America, which originated from South Asia. The species is becoming an established breeding population in South Florida and its environs. The python was illegally freed in the Everglades National park where the marshy grasses and water provide a conducive environment for its survival. Burmese python was recognized as a reproducing population around the year 2000. The python has been classified as an invasive species in Florida. The species has disrupted the ecosystem by preying on native species and out competing them for food. The python is a successful invasive species because their large size makes it have fewer predators (alligators and humans) (Brown, 2006). Efforts have been put in place to manage the increase of the Burmese pythons due to the devastating effects it has caused in the ecosystem. Python removal and control is being done through dogs and human search. Dog search has recorded much greater success than human beings because humans cannot access some areas due to the thick vegetation. The origin of Burmese python can be attributed to the regions of South East Asia including Burma,Thailand, China, and the regions of Archipelago. Perspective On Reading The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of the literature regarding an historical perspective on reading instruction in schools, and the balanced literacy philosophy. This information provides a background from which to better understand how the balanced literature approach to reading instruction has come to exist, and the tasks that are part of this philosophy for the teacher. Then, more specific information is examined from the Crowley Independent School District regarding how the balanced literacy framework is implemented within that district. In addition, various curriculum documents are discussed in order to better understand how the CISD implements its balanced literacy program. Furthermore, the professional development and support for the reading initiative that occurs at the district and campus levels is discussed, along with the leadership that is provided within the schools to help teachers successfully carry out the balanced literacy program. Researchers believed that teaching phonics provided a way in which children would learn the basic components of language, and would be able to improve reading skills in a logical manner. • 11. Presidential Election Process Of The United States Presidential Election Process The election process in the United States can be overwhelming and confusing. Firstly, how a citizen can be eligible to become a Presidential candidate? What are the requirements or the qualifications that a person needs to be a candidate? With that in mind, the candidates get to sponsor for their electoral campaigns from what type of funds and from whom? People need to know the type of character that a candidate demonstrates. America has become very demanding. There are a lot of things that consume our lives and we are not giving enough importance to the Elections Process. The U.S. Census found that only 47 percent of eligible adults with family incomes of less than $20,000 a year voted in the 2012 presidential election, compared to 80 percent of those whose earnings exceeded $100,000. Overall, only 19 percent of likely voters come from families with incomes of less than $30,000 a year, even though that same group comprises 46 percent of nonvoters. Americans should get more involved in the election process for our democracy to continue because only a certain part of the population vote and get involved in the process. The United States is a hectic place to live; many people say they are too busy to wait in line to vote. • 12. Components Of Thermoregulation ( Tm ) Systems And The... Phase change materials are widely used source of thermoregulation (TM) systems and in latent thermal energy storage (LTES). PCMs capability to absorb and release large latent heat during phase change transition processes provides a wide range of phase change temperatures for thermal management systems. The incorporation of PCMs can achieve the same or even better performances with a smaller volume. PCMs can meet the thermoregulation requirements of various applications. Currently, the low thermal conductivity of PCMs (usually less than 1 W mK−1) greatly limits their heat dissipation performance in thermal management applications. Currently main focus of research is to increase the thermal conductivity of the PCMs. In this regard different kinds of materials such as metal and carbon composites with PCMs are produced. The intensive experimental and theoretical investigation are made to improve the performance of PCMs. This paper discusses in detail the fabrication and thermal conductance measurement techniques, and mathematical modeling of PCMs composites. Moreover applications of PCMs in TM and LTES system are also mentioned with examples. 1. God told his disciples in Matthew chapter twenty eight verse nineteen Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. And youth ministry is one of the many ways the Catholic Church is doing this. As stated in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, recreational workers create programs that can be altered to specific age groups. Being a youth minister you encounter many different things. Like recreational workers, youth minister put together programs for both middle school and high school. The Arch Dioceses send a lesson plan of what the students should know by the end of the year. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church these four pillars are faith, liturgy and sacraments, morality of our life and prayer. If Holden saw this it would move him deeply because he would be just like the lone walrus, a person who is lost and seems to fail everything in life, then when he looks at the group of walruses he could think of multiple things. He could see the group of walruses as his actually closely knitted family or all of the people in his life that gave him advice like Mr. Antolini. • 24. The Food Safety Is A Highly Overlooked Essay Food safety is a highly overlooked yet crucial aspect of the food industry, as evident in the deadly 1993 Escherichia Coli outbreak in multiple Jack in the Box locations. Escherichia Coli is prevalent in raw and undercooked ground beef, which is a common food item on the Jack in the Box menu; the bacterial contamination during the slaughtering process of the meat lead to this gut wrenching epidemic (Wiley 2013). The horrific E. coli outbreak could have been prevented if it were not for Jack in the Box s meat supplier Vons, Foodmaker s vice president of technical services Ken Dunkley, and Jack in the Box s President Bob Nungent. The 1993 Jack in the Box E. Coli outbreak could have been prevented firstly if the contaminated meat itself had never set foot in a single Jack in the Box establishment. It was made evident upon an interview with Jack in the Box s President Bob Nugent that the testing that was done on that particular batch of meat indicated that it had high levels of E. coli. It is their responsibility to notify us if there s any potential hazard with a product. We were notified of those high levels of E. coli after the outbreak. So without notification, we couldn t take any measures to preclude it . (Benedict 2011). • 25. The Tortilla Curtain Analysis In The Tortilla Curtain, T.C. Boyle strives to show the economic and social divide between illegal immigrants and middle class American citizens. He does this by showing Candido Rincon, an immigrant from Tepoztlan, Mexico, crossing paths multiple times with Delaney Mossbacher, a white middle class American living in the complex of Arroyo Blanco. Delaney, a self proclaimed Democrat, over his interactions with Candido and other Hispanics, deviates from his liberal views and descends into overt racism. Likewise, Candido has the intentions that mirror his name the name Candido comes from the latin word candidus, a, um which has a connotation of pureness but as he gets more and more desperate, he diverges from his honest work and resorts to stealing and scavenging. Candido s and Delaney s actions display each s descent into savagery. The coyote, a traditional symbol of savagery, applies to both Candido and Delaney. Delaney writes an entire entrance into his nature blog Pilgrim at Topanga Creek regarding the coyotes: yet I can t help thinking too of the missing pets, the trail of suspicion, the next baby left unattended on the patio. The coyotes keep coming, breeding up to fill in the gaps, moving in where the living is easy. They are cunning, versatile, hungry and unstoppable (215). In the book, James focused on the concepts of genuine choice and forced beliefs. His argument is that individuals have choices to believe; however, those choices are shaped around facts and forced beliefs. He also argues on religious hypotheses and the concept of belief without reason. The first problem James tackles is genuine options. He disagrees with Clifford on the idea of genuine options. He believes that there are certain things which we cannot wait for efficient evidence before we make a claim. Those things are the ones where religious faith is intellectually acceptable. He states that genuine belief is living, forced and momentous. A living belief will be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are supposed to gain, even now, by our belief, and to lose by our non belief (James 136). According to James, science says things are, morality says things are better than other things, and religion says essentially two things. Firstly, she says things that the best things are the more eternal things (...) the things in the universe that throw the last stone (James 136). The second one states that we are better off if we believe her first affirmation to be true. Furthermore, religion is momentous force because the answer to these religious force is all up to you, there is no intellectual ground to answer the questions. Therefore, James is saying, if you are a theist, there is nothing wrong in choosing to believe that there is a God, also, if you are atheist, there is nothing wrong in choosing to believe there is no God. This is because it takes as much faith to say there is no God as that there is a God. Therefore, according to James, we can believe or not believe based on our irrational passions alone. In addition, James lays out the problem of choosing to believe. He argues that people are inherent believers by nature and that they do not choose to believe. There are some flaws in James argument. Firstly, his claim that belief in God is live, forced and momentous and cannot be decided on intellectual means. The question of whether God is live has only to do with the individual. Title Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is an inadequate measure of societal well being and should be replaced by the Human Development Index (HDI) Abstract This paper will discuss the anomally of Human Development Index (HDI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In this discussion I will argue for HDI as a fairer comparison of a country s overall economic wealth health and social well being rather than the generally accepted method used by most countries of GDP. • 35. The Nightingale Quotes This quote is a flashback from an elderly Vianne, and it is the first line in the book. This quote foreshadows the effect that war has on many characters, and how such a horrible event can put everything under a microscope and show the courageous battles fought, and not just by the soldiers. War is an abhorrent event that has the ability to destroy everything. That is no different in the novel The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. The Nightingale is about two French sisters, Vianne and Isabelle Rossignol and tells their stories while living in a German occupied France. Right from the very beginning, it seems that the two sisters have completely opposite characteristics. When Vianne was 14 and Isabelle was 4 their mother died. This is obviously a very emotional time for the two and they both cope with the death of their mother in very different ways. Vianne is forced to take over the mother role which is courageous at any age, but at 14 it is simply gallant: You will be the mother now. Her father said to Vianne while her eyes were swollen from crying, her grief unbearable (7). Vianne did not even have the opportunity to cope with her mother s loss before she had to fill her mother s shoes, whose shoes were not easy to fill by any means. Isabelle on the other hand is a fiercely rebellious girl who refuses to listen to anyone. She is expelled from a dozen boarding schools throughout her teenage years, and she is unwilling to settle down and be the proper lady her father so desperately wishes her to be. At the beginning of the novel, both sisters appear to have distinctive differences in regard to their personality and values. In 1940, the war begins to intensify at a rapid rate, and it appears that when the war begins the rebellious side of Isabelle will end up costing her her life or someone around her. The difference in the two sisters is evident when Sophie questions why they have to relinquish their radio to the Germans, and Isabelle immediately decides to hide it , and Vianne reacts by telling Isabelle that they will do as we are told (99). This is a perfect example of different types of courage between the two sisters. Isabelle s courage is bold and impulsive as she never thinks about the consequences ... • 37. Types Of Diffusion And Diffusion gy 2) All plants and animals are made up of cells and all cells are surrounded by a membrane. Any ion or molecule that the cell needs to either use or get rid of requires the ability to move through the cell membrane. Diffusion in plant and animal cells is the spontaneous net movement of ions and molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, this is also referred to as moving down a concentration gradient. The movement of molecules and ions during diffusion is known as passive transport because they move as a result of their own kinetic energy. Although the kinetic energy is random in its movement due to the concentration gradient there will be net movement until dynamic equilibrium is reached. The rate of diffusion depends on the distance the molecule needs to travel, temperature, solubility, concentration gradient and the size of the molecule. Diffusion is dependent on the molecules being able to pass through the cell membrane, however, diffusion does not require a membrane in order to take place. There are three different types of diffusion: Simple diffusion some small molecules that are non polar pass through a membrane. Channel diffusion larger, polar molecules are helped across the membrane by proteins that are embedded in the membrane creating a gateway for the molecules to pass through. Facilitated diffusion carrier proteins bind to certain molecules and release them on the other side of the membrane. If cells need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A notable example of this would include the location of the third pearl that the protagonists, Grover, Annabeth, and Percy went to retrieve, which was set in Lotus casino, Las Vegas, Nevada. This is an extremely significant setting, as it is named after, and therefore is based on the mythological country of the Lotus eaters . Evidently, as they enter, they are encouraged to eat lotus cookies, presented to them by each passing staff member. These lotus shaped cookies make them lose track of time, dulls their senses, and keeps them prisoner there, as they lose the will to leave. In Greek mythology, it was the flowery lotus fruit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is clear that the film is directed at young children and family viewers with the purpose of educating the audience of ancient Greek mythology in a modernised, child friendly method. This is clear in the portrayal of the gods in their common modern American apparel instead of traditional Greek clothing(see appendix A and B). A further example of this is when Percy Jackson uses the reflective back of an iPod for combat with Medusa, as it allowed him to view her indirectly. In mythology, Perseus used the reflective shield of Athene for the same purpose. The switching of the shield to an item of modern technology emphasizes the modification of Greek myths in the film. Additionally, Hermes winged boots were portrayed as winged Converse sneakers(See appendices C and D), given to Percy by Luke, demigod son of Hermes/Hermes archetype. Converse sneakers are extremely popular in the most recent generations/children of the modern day world, along with iPods, so the overall effect of this modernisation of mythology is that no piece of equipment looks out of place. Moreover, since the mythology in this movie has been modernised, it is a great way to entertainingly educate people about ancient Greek mythology. To conclude, the target audiences of the film determined how it adapted and modernised mythology for entertainment, as well as educational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Excellence poured roughly 25% of the store s budget into IT, including a wireless network to link every item to an Oracle inventory database in real time using radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on the clothes. The staff would roam the floor armed with PDAs to check whether items were in stock, and customers could do the same through touch screens in the dressing rooms. Each store manager was an experienced retailer and was given responsibility for their overall exicenter implementation, including the building and IT systems. The store managers were supported by the architects and builders and by their in house IT staff, for whom the exicenter project was a new and exciting opportunity. Although it proved difficult to integrate the different components of the project and the IT testing schedule was minimised to meet a revised schedule, the project was eventually finalised. But most of the flashy technology today sits idle, abandoned by employees who never quite embraced computing chic and who are now too overwhelmed by large crowds to assist shoppers with handhelds. On top of that, many gadgets, such as automated dressing room doors and touch screens, are either malfunctioning or ignored. Packed with experimental technology, the clear glass dressing room doors were designed to open and close automatically at the tap of a foot pedal, then turn opaque when a second pedal sent an electric ... • 43. Prison Litigation Reform Act Case Analysis The influx of inmates in the late 1970s through 1980s led to unsustainable prions condition that violated inmate s rights granted by the Eight Amendment. As the budgets were being exhausted, transpired the issues of inmate s poor medical treatment, abusive physical security, and unsuitable physical conditions (Newman and Scott 2013, 547). In the 1976 case of Estelle v. Gamble, the Supreme Court of the United States established that an inmate s Eighth Amendment rights were violated if prison personnel demonstrated deliberate indifference to a prisoner s serious illness or injury (Newsman and Scott 2012, 548). The increased volume of filed lawsuits led to the passing of the Prison Litigation Reform Act, which targeted frivolous lawsuits by limiting waivers for the requirement that inmates pay filing fees, ... In opposition, the State of California submitted an appeal for the federal order to the Supreme Court seeking protections under the Prison Litigation Reform Act (Newsman and Scott 2012). In 2011, the Supreme Court 5 4 decision upheld three judge panel s federal order requiring California state prisons to reduce its population by 30,000 inmates (Liptak 2014).The Supreme Court judges emphasized the notion that overcrowding inflicted pain on prisoners, and, therefore, violated inmate s constitutional rights (Newsman and Scott 2012). After the Supreme Court s decision, Jerry Brown advocated realignment in the state prisons that would transfer non violent, non serous, and non sexual offenders to county jails (Ravi 2014). • 45. Taking a Stand on Land Forestry Wildlife Management From the age of 15 I have had a job and was always better at work than school. It wasn t until recently that I began to look back and decided I needed a change so, I made the choice to start college. My love of fishing and the outdoors made the decision easy when it came to choosing my major, Land Forestry Wildlife Management. Although the decision came easy and I feel it is the right career for me, there are many issues, positive and negative, related to my field. Land Forestry Wildlife Management does a lot of good for people and animals but can also hurt. Prescribe burning, wildlife control and forest management are all big issues related to the field. Prescribed burning, also called controlled burns, has many different purposes. The American Indians set fires to stimulate the growth of plants and keep areas open to produce food (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Prescribed fires help improve wildlife habitat and land quality. After the burns, the brush grows back greener and lusher, providing nesting areas for animals such as deer. In addition, prescribed fires are a cheaper way to manage vegetation as they require no bulldozing, cutting, or chemicals (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources). Many argue that prescribed burning can be dangerous. To that I say with everything there is good and bad. You must weigh the pros and cons and decide which outweighs the other, for me that is the pros. Prescribed burning is a wonderful land management ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
