Essay on Standardized Test
Standardized Test Standardized test have been a means measuring student performance. Some
important questions that always come up regarding standardized test are what are the tests really
measuring? Are they measuring a person s intelligence? Their ability to perform well on
standardized tests? Or just some random quantity of the person s IQ? When examining the issues
around which these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that
however useful the tests may be for standardizing a group s intellectual ability, they are not a good
indicator of intelligence.
To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone
involved. A person s environment... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What about physical intelligence, conversational intelligence, social intelligence, survival
intelligence, and the others that go into everyday life? Why are these important traits not figured
into intelligence tests? Standardized tests certainly get predictable results where academics are
concerned, but they should not be considered good indicators of general intelligence because of
the omissions they make in the testing process. To really gauge a person s intelligence, it would
be necessary to put them through a rigorous set of real life trials and document their
performance. The standardized IQ tests of today are test only a limited quality of a person s
character that can hardly be referred to as intelligence. Standardized test also have no way to
compensate for cultural differences. Different cultures have different methods of solving problems,
and speediness is not always the best way to tackle a problem. Therefore the time limitations on
standardized test are a major drawback.
The reasons that IQ tests fail at their task can be separated into two main groups. The first grouping
is where the tests assume too much. Examples of this are the assumption that speed is always good,
vocabulary is a good indicator of intelligence, and that different test taking environments won t
affect the outcome. The second grouping comes because the tests gauge the wrong items. Examples
of this are different culture groups being asked to take the

The Critique Of Culture In The Sand Child By Tahar Ben...
Culture is an amalgamation of shared beliefs, values, and norms within a society. Thus, culture has
the ability to influence the way in which one learns, lives, and behaves. When the cultural values
and practices are negative, the fate of a person growing up in this situation can be critically
affected. In The Sand Child, Tahar Ben Jelloun exhibits how the cultural values of the Moroccan
society such as the inheritance law and the social practices such as the blatant rejection and
demeaning treatment of women in society have affected Ahmed, the protagonist, and provide an
insight into Jelloun s critique of those practices. The codification of misogynistic rules that solely
pertain to leveling up the man s position in a society have had a... Show more content on

They were right. In this way they rid themselves of misfortune. It was an act of wisdom, a brief
pain, an implacable logic (Jelloun 99). Ahmed s father comes to him in a dream and tells him
that he did not have the courage to proceed with this practice himself, but admires the fathers that
were able to follow through with it. He specifically mentions how Ahmed was saved from this
torturous procedure, as his father chose him to take on the male lead, while on the other hand
his sisters were ignored and were figuratively dead to the father. Although, this cultural practice
did not directly affect Ahmed, nor did it affect his sisters, it affected other female babies in this
society, while also subconsciously affecting Ahmed. This sense of betrayal and guilt has affected
Ahmed s life as it is something that will always follow him because he feels as though he
betrayed his father by not following through with his wishes and becoming the man he had
always wished for. The author may have put this section in because he wanted to demonstrate the
guilt that is subconsciously put onto women. All aspects of a woman s life are criticized merely
for having female body parts and being seen as the weaker gender. These cultural practices are
seen as a normal, wise act done in order to keep the honor in the family. Thus,

Rock Autobiography
Much of my childhood was spent with my head pointed towards the ground, scanning the earth
for treasures, or as other people refer to them: rocks. I was usually granted permission to bring as
many rocks as would fit into my father s deep pockets and the front pocket of my mother s
drawstring bag to take home with me from whatever. My grandpa, a professor and teacher of many
different subjects in the field of science, used to bring me to rock shows after taking notice of my
interest. He would teach me about different minerals as we walked past each cluttered booth and
explain igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock types. He helped teach me about the science
behind something I already found interesting; this is where my fascination with

Should Professional Athletes Get High Salaries
Athletes and Professional Entertainers Deserving High Salaries?
Many professional athletes and entertainers earn large sums of money. Do you agree or disagree
with these individuals making this kind of money? I agree with them earning high salaries
because people have the choice to pay money to see them. These people are not in it for the
money. They do it because this is what they love to do. They deserve the money and need it.
They worked hard every day to do what is need to keep on doing their career. They should not be
punish or criticized for doing what they want. They deserve the money for their hard work,
dedication, and people should not get mad at them and keep paying them.
My first reason I think they should keep making their high salaries because people are going to
keep paying them. People pay to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Just like anyone else they need the money to survive. I know they may not need that much
money, but that s how much it cost for them to keep on with their job. They deserve it because
they worked hard to get where they are. They didn t just wake up and get where they are.
Athletes have been working years to get as good as there are. They also wouldn t be able to be
where they are. They deserve this money for the years of work they have done and they need the
money for the financial expenses of going on tour or having an injury.
In conclusion, I agree that these people deserve their high salaries they receive. They don t only
deserve them the need them. People have they choice to pay and see them. If you disagree with
them, then why do people keep paying for them? People pay for cable which is literally full of
professional entertainer and athletes. People pay because they love watching them that s why they
deserve all the money they receive. People need to understand how these professionals are people
to and need the same things we need. They deserve the money they worked for Just like anyone else

The Pardoner is a big liar and act so greedy but at the same time he telling good story and lesson.
In The Pardoner s Prologue , especially in the end of the prologue, it clearly show that his
teaching and church believe are all corrupted. It really show they are selfish and greediness and
also in The Pardoner s Tales , we can see that there are a lot of repeat word that represent the
Pardoner itself and the church believe. The Pardoner say the word gluttony and greed many
times, he tells that they are bad but the way he act and speech are all ironic. Here are some quote
from the tale, O gluttony, so full of cursedness! O first cause of our trial and tribulation, Origin
of all our souls damnation till we were purchased back by blood of Christ! (Chaucer 498 501).
This quote, the Pardoner all blabbing about the gluttony are very bad and the cause of all bad
things. It is very ironic to what he does in the story, the pardoner get drunk and eat while he

wretchedness. O drunken man, disfigured is your face, sour your breath, you re foul to the

During the transition into the new millennium, a number of factors including new technology,
sports personalities, and originality of new fans, led to the media destruction of modern sports. The
media changed professional and amateur athletics into businesses rather than into moralistic
entertainment while disgracefully exploiting higher education and individuals in the sporting
world. The press has also produced a new set of ideals and attitudes in the fans and players of
popular sports (Torr 49).What began in the transition to the new millennium is now an ever
occurring phenomenon that plagues the wide world of sports. While it is true that the media
occasionally broadcasts stories of unlikely successes and cordial charity, it consistently publicizes
the most shameful and less copious actions of certain athletes and leagues. One of the most prolific
examples derives from the National Football League, which has a substantial problem with
regulating touchdown celebrations and dances. Rather than help control the problem, the media
feels the need to emphasize the celebrations more so than the actual plays. Athletes have engaged in
line dances, dice rolling, fake photo shoots, air guitar playing, and many other imprudent dances
and actions. The most notable occasions (thanks to the media) include: Joe Horn removing a cell

Literary Analysis Of Truman Capote
Truman Capote s writing techniques are an essential component to the overall effect that his
message gives to the readers. The use of rhetorical as well as literary devices work hand in hand
to show the reader just exactly what Capote was trying to convey through his words. At first
glance, it may be difficult to decipher the message, however once one digs deeper the message
becomes much clearer. Capotewants the audienceto understand the importance of living life to the
fullest because it can change drastically in the matter of minutes. Although he explains very little
that directly relates to his true purpose, his subtle use of stylistic devices work in cohesion to
express his ideas, thus the importance of living life to the fullest at all times is greatly
emphasized. His message is explored through the use of extensive foreshadowing throughout the
section preceding the murders. Capote writes, There s him. Her. The kid and the girl. And maybe
the other two. But it s Saturday. They might have guests. Let s count on eight, or even twelve.
The only sure thing is every one of them has got to go (Capote 37). The obvious foreshadowing
expressed in this piece is just the first part to the rest of the sections that force us to realize how
vital it is to appreciate life and live it to the fullest. It exemplifies how life can change at any given
moment and the suspense offered in this quote further embodies that idea. Along with
foreshadowing, Capote extends his message with

The History Of The Globe Theatre
Luke Hallfrisch
Prof. Rebecca Thornberry
Intro to theater
October 28, 2016
The History of the Globe Theatre Today we know of The Globe Theatre on because of the
famous playwright and director known as William Shakespeare. The events which took place in
The Globe s past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the
history of theater and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance
it held at its time, and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future.
In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen,
to lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be
allowed to build his theatre known as The Theatre . It was located north of the London Wall
(Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there
were many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those
involved in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard
and Cuthbert Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme
action to protect their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The
landowner had hoped he would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In
December of 1598 while Giles Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers,

Mac Os Classic Has Its Shortcomings Essay
Since the first Macintosh operating system, System 1, back in 1984 there has been 15 major
versions issued. System 1 was the beginning point of the GUI based systems made available to the
market. No longer relying on the text command line, it relied on the user manipulation of the GUI
and mouse. However, the Mac OSClassic had its shortcomings. According to Jonathan Levin
(2012), Memory management was poor, however, and multitasking was cooperative, which by
today s standards is considered primitive. Cooperative multitasking involves process voluntarily
yielding their CPU timeslice, and works reasonably well when processes are well behaved (p.
3,4). This wasn t always the case and any process malfunction would shut down the system.
System 3, released in 1986 introduced File System Hierarchy, storing files in a tree like
directory that is currently common on all operating systems today. It also was the first system to
have Disk Cache that kept regularly used commands in the memory that sped up operations. There
were several minor versions in between System 3 until System 7. System 7 was released in 1991
and it made use of a hard drive instead of a floppy disk that was too limited in size. It also had
virtual memory that used free space on the hard drive as random access memory (RAM). Mac OS
7.6, released in 1997, was the first version to use the Mac OS instead of System in it naming
scheme. Mac OS 7.6 and Mac OS 8.0 released also in 1997, where very

The Most Memorable Moment That Changed My Life
I was born into a prestigious family who has raised me to have proper etiquette , show respect,
and have chivalrous qualities. Throughout my life, I was always viewed as the child of god, the
boy that never lies, the one who would never do that , that s not like him. On the contrary, the
truth is that nobody is perfect nor innocent, including myself. People such as myself receive
judgements such as these periodically due to the fact that we have learned how to keep our
personal lives private. For this reason, for people such as myself, we have difficulties expressing
ourselves. This is just a glimpse of my background so you could have a better understanding of
my point of view . The most memorable moment that has changed my perspective in life was
when I had to move from Upstate New York to Connecticut (CT). I moved in 2014 with my sister
to my half brother s house. It all started in the summer when my sister and I went to go visit my
half brother in CT. When we arrived, that part of the familywelcomed us in a way in which no one
from my mother s side of the family has ever done before. That alone made me feel special; as if
I was actually loved by my father s side of the family. Therefore, we spent some time with them.
We also went to six flags which, quite frankly, was the highlight of the year. We had a blast until
my father came up with the idea of sending my sister to CT. He wanted to do this because she was

Countrywide’s Unethical Business Dealings
Abstract
It would be convenient to start this research paper by stating that corruption is a challenge mainly
for businesses in developing countries and that it is unrelated to the current affliction of the
economy in the United States. It would also be convenient to claim corruption has declined in
America as a result of awareness raising campaigns and the numerous anti corruption laws. But none
of those aforementioned statements would be true. Corruption is not the exception, but rather the
rule in today s business practices. In 2004, Daniel Kaufmann, a senior fellow at Brookings
Institution and former director at the World Bank, calculated an index of legally corrupt
manifestations which is defined as the extent of undue influence ... Show more content on

Subprime lenders are lenders who, for a price, are willing to assume a higher risk than conventional
lenders to purchase or refinance homes (Setzer, 2004). Countrywide s tactics often led borrowers to
expensive and sometimes unfavorable loans that resulted in richer commissions for Countrywide s
sales forces, fees to company affiliates providing services on the loans, and a roaring stock price that
made Countrywide executives among the highest paid in America. Countrywide s entire operation,
from its computer system to its incentive pay structure and financing arrangements, was intended to
wring maximum profits out of the mortgage lending boom no matter what it cost borrowers
(Morgenson, 2007). The company s incentive system also encouraged brokers and sales
representatives to move borrowers into the subprime category, even if their financial position meant
that they belonged higher up the loan spectrum. Brokers who peddled subprime loans received
commissions of 0.50 percent of the loan s value, versus 0.20 percent on loans one step up the
quality ladder. For years, a software system in Countrywide s subprime unit, sales representatives
used to calculate the loan type that a borrower qualified for, did not allow the input of a borrower s
cash reserves (Morgenson, 2007). A borrower who has more assets poses less risk to a lender and

Psychoactive Drugs Can Have On An Individual s Brain
To fully understand the affects that psychoactive drugs can have on an individual s brain, one has
to first define the term, dissect the history and use, know what factors cause addiction, and what
leads to drug dependency. What is a psychoactive drug? A psychoactive drug, psycho
pharmaceutical, or psychotropic is a chemical substance that changes brain function and results in
alterations in perception, mood, or consciousness (drug, n.d). Typically the term drug alone can be
seen or associated with a positive or negative view. For example, when an individual is under the
weather suffering from cold like symptoms, they may take cough syrup to aid them into recovery

Opioids have long been valued for their effect on the gastrointestinal system due their ability to
quieting coughing (codeine) and counteracting diarrhea. One of the most popular forms of opium
used today medically is morphine. Although opioids are the most effective medication in aiding
chronic pain and many other issues, it has been given a bad rap as a very addictive substance when
not monitored correctly or taken in moderation.
What causes addiction? .No one single factor can determine why psychoactive drugs have a
tendency to become addictive. On the contrary the more risk factors a person has, the greater the
chance that taking drugs will lead to abuse and addiction. Learned behavior such as classical
learning is one factor that can lead to addiction and later abuse. Through classical conditioning
one can pair the pleasure of addictive substances or activities with environmental cues. For
example, suppose someone smokes a cigarette in their car after work. The enjoyment of smoking
a cigarette forms a paired association with riding in the car, as well as the time frame after work .
By repeatedly pairing cigarettes with car, and cigarettes after work, both the car and after work
will become cues to smoke cigarettes. Then these cues (getting into the car, getting off work) may
create powerful cravings for nicotine.

Differences Between Henri De Lautrec s Painting And Degas...
Lautrec once said, I paint things as they are. I don t comment ( Henri de Toulouse Lautrec quotes,
n.d.). A painting can represent various objects and emotions within a square canvas, which each
artist creates an artwork with different techniques. These make each painting has it own meaning.
There are several differences between Lautrec s painting and Degas painting, which are the artists
themselves, the subject matter, the emotions depicted, and the technique of painting.
The first difference between the paintings is the artists themselves. An artist is a person who
produces an artwork. Henri de Toulouse Lautrec is a french man. He was born into an aristocratic
family, which seems to be beneficial to him. However, he was born with a genetic condition.
Between the ages of thirteen and fourteen, his legs were fractured, and both of them ceased to

position of the feature in Seated Dancer in Pink Tights by focusing on the center and painting this

objects in Waiting, and the artist divided the space into two section for each of them (Martin,
2003). There are numerous techniques to place features into different positions. Seated Dancer in
Pink Tight, Lautrec s painting, focuses on the single object at the center of the painting, which is a

My Personal Teaching Style And My Student s Learning Styles
I thoroughly enjoyed the reading, Learning and Teaching Styles In Foreign and Second Language
Education by Richard M. Felder Eunice R. Henriques. I have related this reading selection to my
personal teaching/ learning style and my student s learning styles, but especially to one particular
student that I work with.
The students on my caseload have disabilities that range from the following: verbal, sensory,
auditory skills, and emotional and behavior disorders.
Most of my students have specific learning disabilities that relate to the basic psychological
processes that involve, understanding or using spoken or written language, which may contribute to
their ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell and to perform mathematical calculations.
One of my students, who I will refer to as, JV has a behavior disorder. It s important to note that
children with behavioral disorders do not necessarily have learning disabilities. JV is achieving
above grade level with his reading fluency, yet requires ongoing support with behavior issues. To
be specific, he is constantly making noises, will get out of his seat and roam about the room, lose
focus and begin talking about different things that interest him. It is very difficult for JV to
maintain focus for long unless a stimulating environment is provided.
I decided to reach JV by providing material that is of interest to him. Stories that relate to his
interest that he has selected are being used with instructional

guide you to preordained locations, and Disney employees and rides reinforce those restrictions and
guidances at numerous points throughout your visit (Shearing, p. 301 302). More significantly, in
the panopticon design, inmates are always under surveillance. Further, inmates are aware they are
always under surveillance even if they cannot see their supervisor so that they begin monitoring
their own actions to conform with rules and restrictions (Dillon, p. 371). At Disney, once a guest
breaks the rules or regulations, they quickly become aware that they are being surveilled. Park
employees in unassuming costumes seemingly unrelated to security or rule enforcement are trained
to enforce rules and hold guests accountable as soon as they act out of line, making clear to guests
that they are always being surveilled even if they cannot see the supervisors

Should Craig Venter Use Yeast To Create Synthetic Life
The concept of synthetic life is to create a new type of living cell out of synthetic DNA. Craig
Venter and other scientists wanted to find a way to understand how life form on Earth. They were
answering the question; can mankind create lifeforms? Craig Venter did answer this question by
eventually using yeast to perform a transplant to make a new type of cell. In my opinion, Craig
Venter should not attempt to create synthetic life because I think it is playing Godand ultimately
messing with the balance of nature. Abiotic synthesis proves that life was made out of inorganic
precursors like energy from lighting or UV radiation. I am such a strong believer in letting mother
nature take care of itself and because of that I would not trust the creation of synthetic life. I also
think messing with synthetic life would make more problems for... Show more content on

synthetic life was God giving us permission to go ahead and use synthetic life every day. There
are many consequences for creating synthetic life and because of that I really feel like it is
something we as humans need to think deeply about. A positive consequence/reward would be that
creating synthetic life would boost our economy and help in the medical field. However, a really
bad outcome could be that this innovation could be misused and cause another problem. It could be
a disease or just a new battle between nations to create the best synthetic biohazard bacteria or virus,
eventually wiping out the human race. My example may seem too extreme, but it could

Race in Shakespeare
Since the Middle Ages, the issues of race have long been discussed. In nearly every culture, race
has been a topic of complex discussion that has brought social discomfort and in most instances
racial prejudice Elizabethan England being no exception. William Shakespeare applies the issue of
race in many of his plays; such in the tragedy of Othello that captures the reality of society in
Elizabethan England, showing common racial bias of that era. Through his characters in the play,
Shakespeare illustrates Elizabethan social ideology towards race, in which foreigners have adapted
to a lifestyle of racial prejudice.
In order to better understand the racial context behind the tragedy of Othello it is important to keep

This as we see in the play provokes more racial slurs towards Othello, although the love that
Desdemona and Othello share for each other is too strong for race to become an issue between them.
In the opening act of the play we see Iago, a veteran military man of Venice and the harshest
critic of Othello throughout the play, share with Roderigo and the audience his intentions of
revenge against Othello. Here not only do we unravel Iago s personal hatred for Othello, but
Roderigo s racial views as well. What a full fortune does the thick lips owe if he can carry t thus!
(I, i ,65) Roderigo, who wants to win Desdemona s love away from Othello at any cost, calls
Othello as thick lips , a racial stereotype of blacks, when responding to Iago about their plans to
turn Venetians such as Desdemona s father Brabantio, against Othello. As Roderigo and Iago go
to awake Brabantio in the middle of the night to tell him of the news that Desdemona ran off
with Othello to get married, multiple stereotypes and slurs are used in this exchange. Iago tells
Brabantio that he s been robbed of his soul, for Othello has taken Desdemona by some sort of
curse, being that there s no way a prominent Venetian woman would go off to marry a barbarian
instead of a Venetian man. Because we come to do you service and you think we are ruffians, you

Tesco Valuation
Aim of the report
The aim of the report is to use different valuation techniques to see if the current share price of
Tesco plc is fair, undervalued or overvalued. Some of the findings will be compared with other
firms in the same industries and share holders will be informed on whether they should buy, hold or
sell.
Background information on Tesco
Tesco is the largest supermarket retail chain in the United Kingdom with Sainsbury being their
closest rival. It is also the third largest retail chain in the world. In the beginning Tesco started off
by selling basic groceries before diversifying into many different markets. In 2007 Tesco was
operating in the following fields:
General groceries
Personal banking

There are many other factors that will have a say in a firms share price. All of which can have an
effect on a share price if there is a slight change in their figures or prospects.
Earning Based Valuation
Price to Earnings Ratio (PER) refers to the fact how long a shareholder has to wait to recover the
cost of purchasing the share. PER is directly affected by the market valuation of a share. Tesco
has a PER of 18.1p in the year 2007. This is above the competitor s average PER in the same
industry (appendix 1). Sainsbury has the highest PER but this doesn t suggest they are shares are
more profitable than the other three companies. This suggests they earnings are expected to
increase at a quicker rate than their rivals. Sainsbury PER is high this year but this is because
their EPS for prior years were quite low which meant they were not really profitable in the previous
years. Tesco have had a stable growth when it comes to EPS so their PER has also been stable.
The two problems with using PER are that it is calculated using accounting profits and based on
historical information. Accounting can be biased or even miscalculated which can lead to a wrong
PER figure.
Price to Sales Ratio (PSR)

Cause And Effect Essay On How To Deal With Concussions
I am writing to you concerning the new trainings that will take place on how to deal with
concussions. Foremost, I will discuss how the brain is affected by an impact. The brain can be
seriously injured when there is a blow to the skull. A coup injury occurs immediately under a site
where there has been an impact. Contrastingly, a countrecoup injury is an impact that occurs on the
reverse side that brings a person s head to a sudden stop, thus causing the brainto hit the skull.
The parts of the brain that are most at risk for traumatic brain injury are the frontal lobe and the
temporal lobe. This may be attributed to the fact that they are up against rigid bone. The structure
of the skull positioned anterior to the neck allows for greater distances and variances of movement.
The frontal lobe influences personality, planning, initiating, and organizing; all of which that are
needed for high level cognitive functioning. Damage to the frontal lobe may result in changes in an
individual s personality and lower level organizing. Moreover, the temporal lobe is ... Show more

Primarily, in the case of a sport like football or boxing, the athletics department should examine all
protective headgear and make sure they meet regulations to effectively protect the individual s head

seriously. Often times, players would prefer to play despite being injured, opposed to receiving the
appropriate medical care that is meant to ensure their health (Le Batard, 2013). In conclusion, the
athletics department, coaches, and players alike should work together to minimize the damaging
effects of concussions on athletes. I hope this information has been useful to you and will improve

Physics Of Running Research Paper
The Physics of Running
Running uses many different laws of physics. Some specific laws or principles are Law of
Pendulum; Newton s First, Second, and Third Laws; velocity; acceleration; and friction. In our
project, we will focus specifically on Newton s three laws, the Law of Pendulum, and velocity.
Running is defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as to go faster than a walk; specifically :
to go steadily by springing steps so that both feet leave the ground for an instant in each step. This
project will explain how the aforementioned laws pertain to the physics of running. Those involved
in running sports, for example track and long distance runners, could benefit greatly from the study

Velocity is the rate of change of an object s position and is a function of time. You can find the
speed that someone goes by knowing how far they went and how long it took them to get there.
The equation used to find velocity is v=d/t; v is velocity, d is distance traveled, and t is time.
Someone who runs the 3200m in 12 minutes runs at an average speed of 266.67 m/min. For a
runner who wants to improve their time in a race, they need to cover more distance per minute.
To achieve running an 11 minute 30 second 3200m a person would run at an average pace of
278.26m/min. This is found by using the same equation v=d/t. This is used to find average
velocity for the race. Many runners do not keep the same speed in a race, especially in a 3200m
race. At the end of a race a runner will speed up to as fast as they

How To Be Learned In My Antonia
The American West: Things Learned from My Antonia The story, My Antonia by Willa Cather
holds many historically accurate information; especially about the way of life on the Nebraska
frontier. Through the Adventures of Jim and Antonia there is much to be learned about the
American West. Be it the hardships of winter, the monetary struggles of immigrants into the land,
the trials of farming, or humble living of everyday citizens; the American West had plenty of
learning opportunities. These learning opportunities were not only for people of that time, but
for people even today in this era. Winters of the American west were extremely difficult, constant
storms, food shortages and freezing temperatures; all of which made the winters so trying. In
Dee Brown s Book, The American West on page 152 she says, Homesteaders who refused to quit
and they were in the majority were faced with a hard winter. Many had no money, no credit, no
food; some had no fuel or clothing. The frontier was no place to be during the cold and bitter
winter months. Some families, like the Shimerda family, were not fully prepared and... Show more

them less humble and more demanding. It seemed that life was actually better during the humbling

Communism In Russia
Communism is a system of social organisation which formerly consumed almost a third of countries
in the entire world, having originated in Russia. The first official communist state was founded
during the Russian revolutions in 1917, due to the inaugural communist political party Bolsheviks
gaining primal power. Afterwards, the influence of communismspread to other countries with the
likes of Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and East Germany to name a few. These countries that were
governed on communist principles were known as the Eastern Bloc . Even countries in Asia were
persuaded into the theoretically human equality system such as China, Laos and Vietnam.
Communism was gathering strength to strength every year in the mid 20th century, but eventually
its impact was wiped off in the late 20th century when the Berlin War was knocked down in 1989,
ending the barrier between the Eastern and Western blocs. Communism arguably was the most
influential social experiment in history, but also the most flawed and its failure to change the world
permanently will always remain significant in history.
The word communism originated from commun , a French term meaning belonging to all . Before
the actual foundation of communist parties and countries, there were people who had desired the
theory of shared ownership and equal wealth among society for centuries. The earliest notable
people to endorse this theoretical societal system included Greek philosopher Plato and religious
leader

Bipolar Disorder And Its Effects On The Lives Of Patients...
When freshman (?) at Frederick Area High School in Frederick, South Dakota, was asked to
describe what bipolar disorder is, he said that it refers to people that change personalities fast.
However, this is only a common misconception. Though the word bipolar is often used in
conversations to describe a person that has mood swings, bipolar disorder actually refers to a
serious mental illness. According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, about 2.6
percent of American adults suffer from a form of bipolar disorder, and about one in five people
with bipolar disorder commits suicide. Despite the impact that bipolar disorder has on the lives
of patients and families alike, it is treated casually by many people across the United States.
Even though many treat it flippantly, bipolar disorder is a serious mental ailment, and the public
needs to have a greater understanding of it. There is a dark stigma surrounding mental illness in
general, and bipolar disorder is no exception. According to the Mental Health Commission of
Western Australia, a stigma is a mark of disgrace that sets someone apart. Bipolar disorder is
incredibly misunderstood by society at large, which leads to this stigma, prejudice, and
discrimination. In everyday conversation, the word bipolar is frequently used to describe how
someone is feeling at that moment. If a person is sad one moment and becomes happy soon after,
their mood swing is labelled as bipolar. When students and faculty at a

The Phrynosoma Hernandesi s Coloration
Does the Phrynosoma hernandesi s coloration assist in camouflaging itself into the environment?
Introduction: The issue of predation amoung most animals in not uncommon and has been the
leading reasons for increased survival pressures. As a result many animals have evolved various
different predatory strategies, these specific traits assist in increasing a species chances for survival.
Phrynosoma hernandesi is a species of lizard in the family Phrynosomatidae, and is a highly
variable species. Characteristics such as colour, pattern, and size vary based on its geographical
location. Short horned lizards such as the Phrynosoma hernandesi, have settled all across North
America, particularly in Saskatchewan and Alberta Canada as well as Montana, Utah, Colorado,
Arizona, New Mexico. The Phrynosoma hernandesi favours the desert environment and generally
resides in the semi arid environments of North and Central America, much like a majority of short
horned lizards that have settled throughout Mexico and along northeastern Sonora, Chihuahua, and
Durango. Through years of evolutionary adaptation Phrynosoma cornutum, which generally resides
in the Sonoran desert, Colorado, Kansas, and Northern Mexico, have developed cryptic colouration
(William 2009). Similarly, the colouration of the Phrynosoma hernandesi varies based on the
geological location, its colouring ranges between grey, yellowish brown, and reddish brown.

`` 6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person `` By...
6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person is a listicle written by David Wong, the chief
editor of the website cracked.com . In this article, Wong takes an atypical side to the tradition self
help style of writing. He approaches the genre with an aggressive, volatile, angry tone to motivate
those who find themselves unmotivated. Wong divides his audienceinto two distinct groups. He
uses a scene from the famous 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross to his aid. This particular scene
is the Alec Baldwin, If you want to work here, CLOSE! speech that received massive critical
praise. Wong uses this scene to parallel the audience to those who worked under Alec Baldwin.
Wong directly then divides the audience into those who get things done in the face of adversity,
and those who fail to even step up to challenge. After making this distinction, Wong then targets
those who fail to step up to the challenge, and proceeds to portray his ideas on how to improve
one s dire situation. However, what Wong doesn t fully understand is that through this article, he
truly alienates the group that he is trying to assist in the first place. Wong s use of vulgar language,
from the very first line to the concluding paragraph, makes an informal attempt to grab an audience
s attention. This caustic style of informality effectively makes the audience cringe and not
responsive to the article s message. Wong also uses different forms of media, ranging from pictures

rebellion instead, of always being confined by religion. For instance, when I was 12 years old my
mom scolded me for turning up the stereo while an Eminem track was playing. She would always

Social Workers And The Social Worker Client Relationship
Today s social workers are surrounded by technology, which changes the way social workers and

Analysis Of The Treasure Of Lemon Brown
In the realistic fiction story, The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter Dean Myers, Greg Ridley
a fourteen year old boy, starts off by getting a lecture from his dad, about his poor grades in math.
Greg is upset and he walks away from his house to get some alone time. As Greg is walking, a

complex. As Greg walks in he finds out that he isn t the only one in the apartment, an old man
named Lemon Brown is also there. Lemon is there for a different reason though. He is trying to
hide his treasure, an old harmonica, from the neighborhood thugs. The thugs weren t successful
in getting Lemon s treasure. Greg returns home with a valuable lesson learned, that he should
value things in life. Greg changes from the beginning of the story to the end of the story. At the

  • 2. Essay on Standardized Test Standardized Test Standardized test have been a means measuring student performance. Some important questions that always come up regarding standardized test are what are the tests really measuring? Are they measuring a person s intelligence? Their ability to perform well on standardized tests? Or just some random quantity of the person s IQ? When examining the issues around which these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that however useful the tests may be for standardizing a group s intellectual ability, they are not a good indicator of intelligence. To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone involved. A person s environment... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, culture has the ability to influence the way in which one learns, lives, and behaves. When the cultural values and practices are negative, the fate of a person growing up in this situation can be critically affected. In The Sand Child, Tahar Ben Jelloun exhibits how the cultural values of the Moroccan society such as the inheritance law and the social practices such as the blatant rejection and demeaning treatment of women in society have affected Ahmed, the protagonist, and provide an insight into Jelloun s critique of those practices. The codification of misogynistic rules that solely pertain to leveling up the man s position in a society have had a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were right. In this way they rid themselves of misfortune. It was an act of wisdom, a brief pain, an implacable logic (Jelloun 99). Ahmed s father comes to him in a dream and tells him that he did not have the courage to proceed with this practice himself, but admires the fathers that were able to follow through with it. He specifically mentions how Ahmed was saved from this torturous procedure, as his father chose him to take on the male lead, while on the other hand his sisters were ignored and were figuratively dead to the father. Although, this cultural practice did not directly affect Ahmed, nor did it affect his sisters, it affected other female babies in this society, while also subconsciously affecting Ahmed. This sense of betrayal and guilt has affected Ahmed s life as it is something that will always follow him because he feels as though he betrayed his father by not following through with his wishes and becoming the man he had always wished for. The author may have put this section in because he wanted to demonstrate the guilt that is subconsciously put onto women. All aspects of a woman s life are criticized merely for having female body parts and being seen as the weaker gender. The media changed professional and amateur athletics into businesses rather than into moralistic entertainment while disgracefully exploiting higher education and individuals in the sporting world. The press has also produced a new set of ideals and attitudes in the fans and players of popular sports (Torr 49).What began in the transition to the new millennium is now an ever occurring phenomenon that plagues the wide world of sports. While it is true that the media occasionally broadcasts stories of unlikely successes and cordial charity, it consistently publicizes the most shameful and less copious actions of certain athletes and leagues. One of the most prolific examples derives from the National Football League, which has a substantial problem with regulating touchdown celebrations and dances. Rather than help control the problem, the media feels the need to emphasize the celebrations more so than the actual plays. • 8. Literary Analysis Of Truman Capote Truman Capote s writing techniques are an essential component to the overall effect that his message gives to the readers. The use of rhetorical as well as literary devices work hand in hand to show the reader just exactly what Capote was trying to convey through his words. At first glance, it may be difficult to decipher the message, however once one digs deeper the message becomes much clearer. Capotewants the audienceto understand the importance of living life to the fullest because it can change drastically in the matter of minutes. Although he explains very little that directly relates to his true purpose, his subtle use of stylistic devices work in cohesion to express his ideas, thus the importance of living life to the fullest at all times is greatly emphasized. His message is explored through the use of extensive foreshadowing throughout the section preceding the murders. Capote writes, There s him. Her. The kid and the girl. And maybe the other two. But it s Saturday. They might have guests. Let s count on eight, or even twelve. The only sure thing is every one of them has got to go (Capote 37). The obvious foreshadowing expressed in this piece is just the first part to the rest of the sections that force us to realize how vital it is to appreciate life and live it to the fullest. It exemplifies how life can change at any given moment and the suspense offered in this quote further embodies that idea. Along with foreshadowing, Capote extends his message with ... The History Of The Globe Theatre Luke Hallfrisch Prof. Rebecca Thornberry Intro to theater October 28, 2016 The History of the Globe Theatre Today we know of The Globe Theatre on because of the famous playwright and director known as William Shakespeare. The events which took place in The Globe s past and what is its future may be, have become, and will be, an important part of the history of theater and drama. This paper will discuss the history of the Globe theatre, the importance it held at its time, and the importance of The Globe Theater now and in the future. In 1576, during the Elizabethan era, James Burbage and a partner went to a landlord, Giles Allen, to lease some land for a theater. Giles and James agreed to a 21 year lease in which James would be allowed to build his theatre known as The Theatre . It was located north of the London Wall (Mabillard). Starting in 1596, when the lease for the land for the theatre was due to expire, there were many legal issues between the landlord and tenant. There were also disputes between those involved in running the business. James Burbage died in 1567 and he left his two sons, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage, his shares of the theatre.(Globe) The Burbage brothers took an extreme action to protect their assets because, as a result of the dispute, they were facing eviction. The landowner had hoped he would be able to acquire the theater when the tenants left. (Shapiro) In December of 1598 while Giles Allen was away on holiday, the Burbage brothers, ... System 1 was the beginning point of the GUI based systems made available to the market. No longer relying on the text command line, it relied on the user manipulation of the GUI and mouse. However, the Mac OSClassic had its shortcomings. According to Jonathan Levin (2012), Memory management was poor, however, and multitasking was cooperative, which by today s standards is considered primitive. Cooperative multitasking involves process voluntarily yielding their CPU timeslice, and works reasonably well when processes are well behaved (p. 3,4). This wasn t always the case and any process malfunction would shut down the system. System 3, released in 1986 introduced File System Hierarchy, storing files in a tree like directory that is currently common on all operating systems today. It also was the first system to have Disk Cache that kept regularly used commands in the memory that sped up operations. There were several minor versions in between System 3 until System 7. System 7 was released in 1991 and it made use of a hard drive instead of a floppy disk that was too limited in size. It also had virtual memory that used free space on the hard drive as random access memory (RAM). Throughout my life, I was always viewed as the child of god, the boy that never lies, the one who would never do that , that s not like him. On the contrary, the truth is that nobody is perfect nor innocent, including myself. On the contrary the more risk factors a person has, the greater the chance that taking drugs will lead to abuse and addiction. Learned behavior such as classical learning is one factor that can lead to addiction and later abuse. Through classical conditioning one can pair the pleasure of addictive substances or activities with environmental cues. For example, suppose someone smokes a cigarette in their car after work. The enjoyment of smoking a cigarette forms a paired association with riding in the car, as well as the time frame after work . Contemporary Sociological Theory Final Exam Contemporary Sociological Theory Final Exam Section I, Question 1: In Shearing and Stenning s From the Panopticon to Disney World, the world renowned fantasy amusement park is revealed to be a compelling embodiment of Michel Foucault s ideas regarding the disciplinary society. In Foucault s writings on the prison panopticon his idea of a perfected disciplinary institution of a disciplinary society Foucault describes how inmates (or Disney s guests) behavior and movements is overseen and tightly controlled (Dillon, p. 371). This level of control is clear from the moment you enter Disney: barriers, guardrails, and directions guide you to preordained locations, and Disney employees and rides reinforce those restrictions and guidances at numerous points throughout your visit (Shearing, p. 301 302). More significantly, in the panopticon design, inmates are always under surveillance. Further, inmates are aware they are always under surveillance even if they cannot see their supervisor so that they begin monitoring their own actions to conform with rules and restrictions (Dillon, p. 371). At Disney, once a guest breaks the rules or regulations, they quickly become aware that they are being surveilled. Earning Based Valuation Price to Earnings Ratio (PER) refers to the fact how long a shareholder has to wait to recover the cost of purchasing the share. PER is directly affected by the market valuation of a share. Tesco has a PER of 18.1p in the year 2007. This is above the competitor s average PER in the same industry (appendix 1). Sainsbury has the highest PER but this doesn t suggest they are shares are more profitable than the other three companies. This suggests they earnings are expected to increase at a quicker rate than their rivals. Sainsbury PER is high this year but this is because their EPS for prior years were quite low which meant they were not really profitable in the previous years. Tesco have had a stable growth when it comes to EPS so their PER has also been stable. The two problems with using PER are that it is calculated using accounting profits and based on historical information. Accounting can be biased or even miscalculated which can lead to a wrong PER figure. Price to Sales Ratio (PSR) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Cause And Effect Essay On How To Deal With Concussions I am writing to you concerning the new trainings that will take place on how to deal with concussions. Foremost, I will discuss how the brain is affected by an impact. The brain can be seriously injured when there is a blow to the skull. A coup injury occurs immediately under a site where there has been an impact. Contrastingly, a countrecoup injury is an impact that occurs on the reverse side that brings a person s head to a sudden stop, thus causing the brainto hit the skull. The parts of the brain that are most at risk for traumatic brain injury are the frontal lobe and the temporal lobe. This may be attributed to the fact that they are up against rigid bone. The structure of the skull positioned anterior to the neck allows for greater distances and variances of movement. The frontal lobe influences personality, planning, initiating, and organizing; all of which that are needed for high level cognitive functioning. You can find the speed that someone goes by knowing how far they went and how long it took them to get there. The equation used to find velocity is v=d/t; v is velocity, d is distance traveled, and t is time. Someone who runs the 3200m in 12 minutes runs at an average speed of 266.67 m/min. For a runner who wants to improve their time in a race, they need to cover more distance per minute. To achieve running an 11 minute 30 second 3200m a person would run at an average pace of 278.26m/min. This is found by using the same equation v=d/t. This is used to find average velocity for the race. Many runners do not keep the same speed in a race, especially in a 3200m race. At the end of a race a runner will speed up to as fast as they ... • 31. Communism In Russia Communism is a system of social organisation which formerly consumed almost a third of countries in the entire world, having originated in Russia. The first official communist state was founded during the Russian revolutions in 1917, due to the inaugural communist political party Bolsheviks gaining primal power. Afterwards, the influence of communismspread to other countries with the likes of Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and East Germany to name a few. These countries that were governed on communist principles were known as the Eastern Bloc . Even countries in Asia were persuaded into the theoretically human equality system such as China, Laos and Vietnam. Communism was gathering strength to strength every year in the mid 20th century, but eventually its impact was wiped off in the late 20th century when the Berlin War was knocked down in 1989, ending the barrier between the Eastern and Western blocs. Communism arguably was the most influential social experiment in history, but also the most flawed and its failure to change the world permanently will always remain significant in history. The word communism originated from commun , a French term meaning belonging to all . When freshman (?) at Frederick Area High School in Frederick, South Dakota, was asked to describe what bipolar disorder is, he said that it refers to people that change personalities fast. However, this is only a common misconception. Though the word bipolar is often used in conversations to describe a person that has mood swings, bipolar disorder actually refers to a serious mental illness. According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, about 2.6 percent of American adults suffer from a form of bipolar disorder, and about one in five people with bipolar disorder commits suicide. Despite the impact that bipolar disorder has on the lives of patients and families alike, it is treated casually by many people across the United States. Even though many treat it flippantly, bipolar disorder is a serious mental ailment, and the public needs to have a greater understanding of it. There is a dark stigma surrounding mental illness in general, and bipolar disorder is no exception. According to the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia, a stigma is a mark of disgrace that sets someone apart. Bipolar disorder is incredibly misunderstood by society at large, which leads to this stigma, prejudice, and discrimination. In this article, Wong takes an atypical side to the tradition self help style of writing. He approaches the genre with an aggressive, volatile, angry tone to motivate those who find themselves unmotivated. Wong divides his audienceinto two distinct groups. He uses a scene from the famous 1992 movie Glengarry Glen Ross to his aid. This particular scene is the Alec Baldwin, If you want to work here, CLOSE! speech that received massive critical praise. Wong uses this scene to parallel the audience to those who worked under Alec Baldwin. Wong directly then divides the audience into those who get things done in the face of adversity, and those who fail to even step up to challenge. After making this distinction, Wong then targets those who fail to step up to the challenge, and proceeds to portray his ideas on how to improve one s dire situation. However, what Wong doesn t fully understand is that through this article, he truly alienates the group that he is trying to assist in the first place. Wong s use of vulgar language, from the very first line to the concluding paragraph, makes an informal attempt to grab an audience s attention.
