The Characteristics Of An Epic Hero In The Epic Of Beowulf
What makes epic hero stories so compelling? Is it the continuous freedom, courage, and value in
society or is it the significance implemented in who the characters are? Stories have been passed
down for generations. Some of the most famous examples is Beowulf, ВЁGilgameshВЁ , Iliad,
and ВЁJulius Caesar.ВЁ Epic stories portray the development of an epic heroes characterization
through courage, strength, and love of glory throughout the plot of a story. A major epic hero trait
is courage. The act of picking yourself up after you were thrown down to help others. In the story
of Beowulf, Beowulf saved the Danes. ВґВґAnd a young prince must be prudent like that, giving
freely while his father lives so that afterwards in age when fighting starts steadfast companions will
stand by him and hold the line. Behaviour that s admired is the path to power among people
everywhere.ВґВґ (SparkNotes Beowulf) This selection is describing Beowulf as a prince and
warrior who is courageous enough to fight his life for people he cares about. Since Grendel often
attacks at night, it displays the setting as a more hard and rigid area. The behavior of saving
people brings power within the epic hero. ВґВґ Beowulf got ready, donned his war gear, indifferent
to death; his mighty, hand forged, fine webbed mail would soon meet with the menace underwater.
It would keep the bone cage of his body safe.ВґВґ (Spark Notes Beowulf) In this selection,
Beowulf is getting ready to go to war with Grendel s mother. He

Economic Causes Of The American Revolution
The thirteen colonies that became the USA were originally colonies of Great Britain. By the time
the American Revolution took place, the citizens of these colonies were beginning to get tired of
the British rule. Rebellion and discontent were rampant. For those people who see the change in the
American government and society a real Revolution, the Revolution is essentially an economic one.
The main reason the colonies started rebelling against mother England was the taxation issue. The
colonies debated England s legal power to tax them and, furthermore, did not wish to be taxed
without representation. This was one of the main causes of the Revolutionary War. The Revenue
Act of 1764 made the constitutional issue of whether or not the King had the right to tax the
thirteen coloniesan issue, and this eventually became an entering wedge in the great dispute that
was finally to wrest the American colonies from England (Olsen, 6). It was the phrase taxation
without representation that was to draw many to the cause of the American patriots against the
mother country (6).
The reaction against taxation was often violent and the most powerful and articulate groups in the
population rose against the taxation (6). Resolutions denouncing taxation without representation as
a threat to colonial liberties were passed (6). In October of 1765, colonial representatives met on
their own initiative for the first time and decided to mobilize colonial opinion against parliamentary

The Weaknesses Of Odysseus In Homer s Odyssey
Odysseus illustrates countless strengths during the adventure of Aeolus the Laestrygonians. One
of Odysseus strengths is his mastery in speech. After sailing for a while, Odysseus lands on the
magical island of the Aeolians. While adventuring through the floating island he comes across the
halls of Aeolus, the king of the Aeolians. As a result, he begs the king to help him reach his
homeland, And then, when I begged him to send me on my way, he denied me nothing, he went
about my passage. He gave me a sack, the skin of a full grown ox, binding inside the winds that
howl from every quarter... (10.20 23). With his speech, Odysseusis able to persuade Aeolus to send
him off to his homeland with the help of his divine powers. In addition, Odysseus also receives an
abundance of gifts to speed him off on his journey home. These interactions with Aeolus provide
Odysseus with ample materials to commence his journey to his homeland. Hence, it can be
acknowledged that Odysseus mastery of speech assisted him with his journey home. Another one of
Odysseus strengths is his ability to strategically plan his adventures.

Essay On The Babylonians
The Babylonian civilization existed from around 3000 BC until 539 BC. The civilization has its
roots to Mesopotamia, a plain between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River, which is now in
modern day Iraq. The Babylonians are notoriously famous in their discoveries and inventions, most
of which we still use today. The civilization developed ideas such as astronomy, in which they
created the Saros Cycle, a cycle used to predict solar and lunar eclipses. The Babylonians were also
masters in architecture, constructing buildings like the Hanging Gardens using innovative
techniques including glass covered bricks and adornments of gold and bronze. However, despite
many of these discoveries being forgotten or lost, their advancements in mathematics have been
kept for centuries, and have brought modern ideas of angles, quadratic equations and even
knowledge about the Pythagoras theorem, before Pythagoras himself existed.
One modern day use of mathematics and quadratic equations, created by Babylonians, was the
collection of taxes. Mesopotamia was a very fertile land; therefore there were a high number of
farmers in the Babylonian Empire. Because of the high number of farmers, tax collectors and
mathematicians had to develop a new and more efficient way of calculating the ... Show more

Despite the fact that many of their discoveries have been lost through time, it can be concluded that
the Babylonian Empire was very advanced for its time and despite ending with a societal collapse, it
is still possible to find everyday things without knowing they possess century old roots connecting
to the ancient Babylonian civilization. This truly shows, the large influence the Babylonian
civilization has on our modern day society and our understanding of the

Jenny Sullivan s First Love
The poem First Love by Mick Gowar describes the affect that first love has. Rejection by Jenny
Sullivan details the shame that rejection brings.
The title First Love links to a sense of naivety and innocence. It suggests that the poem may be
romantic and meaningful.
On the other hand, the title Rejection instantly signifies a negative atmosphere and implies that the
poem may be an elegy, as it could be exploring the darker, more sorrowful side of one s mind.
Whilst the poems share some similarities, they do not have many ideas or themes in common. First
Love includes themes such as desperation and naivety. These can be identified throughout the
poem. Desperation is particularly evident in the second stanza with the exclamative Please! and the
use of short phrases. The short phrases including Like you suggested. And ... Show more content on

These themes help create a reflective mood with the feeling of shame also prevalent. This poem
seems to be challenging popular belief as the first line is Rejection is orange . This is shocking
as one would usually assume rejection to be grey and nondescript . Isolation is highlighted here,
as it suggests that they stand out, thus making them feel alone, a point which is repeated a
couple of lines later, in which they describe themselves as a council worker s jacket . This point
is where I began to sense a link to mental illness as the jacket is used to represent a public symbol
of shame, much like the way mental illness is viewed in society. This idea is illuminated again in
the last quatrain where they describe themselves as feeling slightly leftover after all the guests
/have gone. This links back to the theme of isolation and also links to the ideas of low self worth
and mental illness. Paranoia can also be identified through descriptions of people whispering behind
my back , this again links to mental illness as many sufferers attempt concealing

Body Modification In Imperial China
Body modification is art because it is showing your personality on the outside. How you re feeling
in the inside you re showing it on your skin. Teens and young adults want tattoos and piercing. It is
considered attractive to some people, most people love body modification. Some people disagree
that body modificationis art. Many people today love to pierce their body or get tattoos. Most
people get a tattooif it has a deep meaning to them. In some work places you need to cover up
tattoos and hide you re piercing because they look unprofessional to some businesses. They need
to realize some people can t cover up everything. If you can t cover up then you don t get the job.

a lot of meaning to her. You would consider thing meaningful and beautiful? Induvial are
showing their feelings as well. Some People are just trying to show their inner self. A guy on the
news did everything to his face to look like a cat. He has so paid so much money on body
modification to look like a cat. This man felt inside he was a cat and showed his feelings on the
outside. All the tattoos and everything he did was art because it was beautiful to see him be what
he really wanted to be.
Body modification has different opinions for different people. Religious reasons are a big thing
but you should be allowed to make your own decisions. Thousands of people have tattoos and
piercings and not all can remove them so we all need to take a better look on everything. Body

Professional Athletes
Athletes are paid too much Do athletes make too much money? Most people today think so
because the amount of money they make for entertaining the public. Kobe Bryant makes more
than a yearly teacher salary by making a single basket. Doctors and surgeons make life saving
decisions every day and make significantly less than a rookie in a professional sport. An average
professional athlete makes two million six hundred thousand dollars more than the president of the

Police officers don t get paid enough for the situations they have to deal with that can possible
cost their life. Firefighters also deserve more money for what they do. Firefighters go fight fires
that can turn on them at any moment that could cause them to give up their lives. Along with
police officers, firefighter deserve better pay for what they do for our community. Lastly,
paramedics deserve a pay raise more than professional athletes do. Paramedics get paid the least
out of all of these other occupations and they have a difficult job. Their main objective is to get
people to the hospital as fast as possible and alive. Professional athletes should give up some of
their money to help pay for these occupations that deserve them (Bhagat, M., 2017).
Also, teachers deserve better pay because the play a more important role in society than athletes.
Teachers get us prepared for life through the information they teach us. None of these professional
athletes would be where they are today without the dedication teachers put into our lives. With the
amount of pay offered for a teacher, young adults that dreamed of becoming teachers will get
turned down because the pay isn t enough for the time they invest. They spend long hard working
nights preparing the lesson plans for the next day to help us as students gain more knowledge and
also point us in the right direction for our futures. With that being said, my conspiracy is that we

Mount St Helens Volcano 1980
Mount St Helens Volcano 1980
The Eruption
Mount St. Helens is an active volcano in the Cascade Range (see Figure 1) . It is situated in
southwestern Washington about 70 km northeast of Portland, Oregon and was formed during four
eruptive stages beginning about 275,000 years ago (Crandell, 1987). Prior to
Figure 1: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3721266.st 1980, the last time it erupted is believed
to have been in 1857. The first indications of renewed activity in 1980 were observed in the middle
of March when earthquakes were detected beneath the volcano. There were many quakes each day
and the largest ones were able to be felt by people in the nearby area. At 8:32 am PDT on May 18,

Intense earthquake activity persisted during this time and aerial observations indicated that the
earthquakes had induced small avalanches of snow and ice. As early as March 31st, volcanic
tremors had begun to be observed on seismographs. Volcanic tremor is a continuous, rhythmic
ground shaking that is generally longer in duration and more continuous than that produced by
an earthquake of similar amplitude. As a result of these data, scientists believed that a magma
eruption from Mount St. Helens was very likely (Mounsthelens.com, 2014). However, no
eruptive activity was observed between late April and early May at which time small steam blast
eruptions began again. These ceased on May 16th. During this time, the north face of the volcano
was becoming distended and cracks were appearing. The bulge grew at a rate of about 1.5 metres
per day to more than 135m higher than before the magma intrusion. The bulge eventually
collapsed and triggered the eruption and subsequent events of May 18, 1980. See Figure 3 for a
diagrammatic representation of the sequence of events. Figure 2 The Bulge Photo by Peter Lipman,

According to Zeilinga de Boer Sanders (2002) the north side of the volcano slid down in 3
blocks. The blocks then broke up and formed into an avalanche that raced down the volcano at
more than 200 km/h. The avalanche of rock, glacial ice, snow and debris relieved pressure on the

Silent Generation Vs. Centennials
The Silent Generation that many grandparents were born in and the Centennials are very diverse.
The younger generation has a very negative reputation and are known for being quite cynical.
Some traits commonly used to describe children now consist of being self centered and entitled.
While Centennials are looked at as being a certain way, the Silent generation is known for more
positive attributes. These include being insanely hard workers and keeping to themselves about
daily life, hence where the phrase originated, children should be seen and not heard. Schoolduring
the 1950s in comparison to the 2000s is incredibly multifarious due to common rules, technology,
and social standards. The typical length of school days during the 20th and 21st centuries are
fairly interchangeable. For instance, both time periods range from 7:30 start times to 3:00
dismissals. Many students are involved in extracurricular activities that start before the bell, or run
after school. After a long day of school and extracurriculars, that can lead to very little time to be
spent at home, working, or pursuing hobbies. The courses that were offered tend to stay the same,
with more advanced courses appearing progressively. Currently in public schools, there are

technology becoming the prime source of intelligence gathering, there is an assumption that other

This problem became apparent when the Soviet (now Russian) Embassy was placed in Washington.
With the White House, Pentagon, and State Department just outside of the Embassy s windows, the
possibility of telephone lines being monitored became increasingly significant. The Russians would
simply have to set up receivers in and around the embassy to pick up emitters coming from the
American buildings. The location is no less than prime real estate for setting up an intelligence
gathering center.
Other forms of monitoring could be used on members with access to classified material. With the
Russians now in Washington there are plenty of personnel around that are working within these
capitol buildings. The ultimate goal of monitoring these individuals is to find out weak points in
character for possible exploitation. If a member of these American organizations can be found to
have something that could be exploited, they are primary targets for blackmail of what they are
entrusted to protect. Other possible sites that may be of possible interest for monitoring are high
technology corporations and financial institutions.
MDCI can countermeasure this monitoring by offering a couple possible solutions to these kinds of
vulnerabilities. One is to bypass possible intercept sites, such as the Russian Embassy, with
underground cables; thus essentially moving the emitter past possible receivers and on the other
side of the Russian Embassy.

Native American Tribe
There are three main Native American tribes in South Carolina. They were known as the
Cherokee, Catawba, and Yemassee. The Cherokee was a tribe of Native Americans called the
real people located in the mountains of South Carolina. They built two types of homes for
summer and winter in their daily lives. Their summer homes allowed air to flow through to
make it cooler, and their winter homes were built with thick walls made of clay and grass called
duab to keep it warmer. Men poisoned the fishing water with walnut bark so the fish would float
to the top and be easier to catch. Men and women were allowed to be leaders of the council to
make decisions for the tribe. The holy man could be either men or women. The leader of the
nation would be a white leader during peaceful times, and a red leader would lead in times of war.

The Road In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
The name of this book written by Cormac McCarthy, the Road, can always drive the readers into a
misunderstanding that it is a Road style work. However, it is actually a apocalyptic story which
includes bunch of description and discussion about belief, morality and the human nature. It
actually presents how people will act under a extreme terrible situation when the civilizationtotally
does not exist. Actually McCarthy is not the only one who uses a lawless environment to analysis
the humanity. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is also a story which puts the characters in a
raw environment and presents their action. These two works have the similarities in the way they
set up the stories, the type of conflicts and the way they end the stories; and this similarities
actually show how the things described in the stories are commonly deemed, and help the two
stories to support each other s ideas. Differ from the Road, Lord of the Flies is actually a war based
story. However, even though the missions of the writing might be different, both the authors make
similar settings for the story. In the Road, the characters are in the environment where the
resources and the rules no longer exist. In Lord of the Flies, the characters are in an island where
is also out of anything civilized. It might be doubtful that how McCathy is sure his description
under that situation can be confirmed as logical and real, but what is described in Lord of the Flies
can confirm it. More

The Glorious Revolution in England of 1688
The Glorious Revolution in England of 1688 James II succession to the throne of England came
without protest of any kind. James II was the son of Charles I and younger brother to Charles II.
In January of 1649, Charles I, King of England, went on trial and was convicted as a Tyrant,
Traitor, Murderer, and public enemy to the good people of this nation. (Cannon, pg. 385) On 7
February 1649, Charles II was proclaimed King of Great Britain. While Charles II was in office, he

Hence, the Glorious Revolution earned the name the Bloodless Revolution. This was the first
revolution where a king was dismounted without any bloodshed (Israel, pg. 432 40). As the
Glorious Revolution ended, England was forced into an immediate conflict with Louis XIV of
France. James II, a Catholic king, had been disposed of, and a Protestant king, William, husband
of Mary, James s daughter, had taken over. Louis and James were able to get along but William
and Louis were not. They began a war over what is now present day Belgium. Belgium was a key
place for fortresses and harbors (Kissinger, pg.71). Though the revolution itself may have been
bloodless, it caused much unrest in England. Old stresses between the King and Parliament,
Church and Dissent, appeared to be undiminished and were joined by bitter divisions over the
succession of William III and Mary II. This involved rebellion and war in Ireland and Scotland,
and plots, riots, and insurrection in England (Hoppit, pg. 2). It is very doubtful whether many of
the revolutionaries of 1688 foresaw the consequences of their actions in terms of England s
relations with foreign powers. Before the revolution, England was largely pro French and anti
Dutch. After 1688, France was to become more or less a permanent enemy. The Nine Years War
was actually a war spawned from the Glorious Revolution between England and France (Morgan,

Definition of Agency Theory
A supposition that explains the relationship between principals and agents in business. Agency
theory is concerned with resolving problems that can exist in agency relationships; that is,
between principals (such as shareholders) and agents of the principals (for example, company
executives). The two problems that agency theory addresses are: 1.) the problems that arise when
the desires or goals of the principal and agent are in conflict, and the principal is unable to verify
(because it difficult and/or expensive to do so) what the agent is actually doing; and 2.) the
problems that arise when the principal and agent have different attitudes towards risk. Because of

Outside investors recognize that the firm will make decisions contrary to their best interests.
Accordingly, investors will discount the prices they are willing to pay for the firm s securities.
A potential agency conflict arises whenever the manager of a firm owns less than 100 percent of
the firm s common stock. If a firm is a sole proprietorship managed by the owner, the owner
manager will undertake actions to maximize his or her own welfare. The owner manager will
probably measure utility by personal wealth, but may trade off other considerations, such as
leisure and perquisites, against personal wealth. If the owner manager forgoes a portion of his or
her ownership by selling some of the firm s stock to outside investors, a potential conflict of
interest, called an agency conflict, arises. For example, the owner manager may prefer a more
leisurely lifestyle and not work as vigorously to maximize shareholder wealth, because less of the
wealth will now accrue to the owner manager. In addition, the owner manager may decide to
consume more perquisites, because some of the cost of the consumption of benefits will now be
borne by the outside shareholders.

The way of the peaceful warrior Essay
Joseph Campbell, a well know mythologist states in the Power of Myth that a hero is someone
who has given his or her life to something greater than oneself (Campbell 151). Campbell also
indicates that there are two types of hero deeds. One type is a physical deed, in which the hero
performs a courageous act in battle or saves a life (Campbell 151). The second is a spiritual deed,
in which the hero learns to experience the supernatural range of human spiritual life and then
comes back with a message (Campbell 152). In his story The way of the peaceful Warrior, Dan

Psychodynamic Approach To Counselling
Counselling theories provide a framework for counsellors to interpret a client’s behaviour,
thoughts, and feelings and help them navigate a client’s journey from diagnosis to post
treatment .The theories refer to the principles and theory of how different forms of counselling
should work, it deals with the assumptions and hypotheses about the process of human
development , the problems and difficulties that can arise at various stages in our life time as a
result of environmental influences and others . There are many counselling theories and all of
them have their own techniques some are similar or extended version of original theories but all

The Problem With Subprime Mortgages And Minorities
The problem with Subprime Mortgages and Minorities
When it comes to buying a home there are a few things you need first. Of course you need
money , but what if you don t have the money but you want to get a home? Well you would apply
for a loan, but there are two loans you could qualify for and those two are known as prime loans
and subprime loans. There are far too many cases where there are well qualified people with the
credentials to get a prime loan but were denied, forcing them to settle for worse forms of credit
such as subprime loan. The problem is that it is unethical to even offer these subprime loans
because of the debt that it puts subprime borrowers in. Through my research I have gathered I have
determined that well qualifying minorities, in particular blacks and Hispanics, have been denied
prime mortgages based on race and prejudices, making them easier prey for less convenient loans
such as subprime mortgages, which results in higher default and foreclosure rates amongst minority
residences.
Subprime loans A subprime loan is a loan given to people who generally have bad to below
average credit and are charged with higher interest rates because of past credit history. Subprime
mortgages was designed to help those Americans who want to achieve the goal of homeownership
for low income minorities (Gorton 12). The unethical dilemma is that the lender has the choice to
decide whether to refinance or not at the end of the first period without the borrower

Essay On Jungle Books
The Jungle Books The First Jungle Book The Second Jungle book is a collection of short stories,
several of which have the same protagonist, by Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1894 and
1895 respectively. The stories that are relevant to this essay will focus on take place in the
jungles of India and in a bungalow in the 19th century. The Mowgli stories tell the story of a boy,
found and raised in the junlge, whose primal life is full of adventures, all the while struggeling
with his own humanity. Meanwhile, RIkkiTikki Tavi is about a mongoose, seperated from his
family, who ends up with a British family whom he must protect from the local fauna. These stories,
and many other by Kipling, have been written with children in mind and are thus considered... Show

Therefore, one could discuss whether or not The Jungle Books is befitting for children or not in
current times. Is Mowgli a good rolemodel for children? Are the stories perhaps a wee bit
imperialistic? This essay will examine the short stories, through its use of symbolism and the
themes present, to discuss why The Jungle Books are usually, and not always, regarded as
children s literature. When we think about children s literature, we usually think of an easy to
read book with lively and fun characters who can be seen as a positive influence on the children.
If the main character is not able to handle himself, or herself, in a proper manner, then that will
reflect on the child who see them as their heroes. Also, the moral of the story is most often a
positive one so that the readers can learn from it and use it in their lives. While the morals are most
often positive these days, it was not always so. With time literature changes, and children s
literature from the 19 th century is quite different from children s literature in the 21 st

Replacing PE With Study Hall
I strongly disagree with replacing PE with study hall. It supports a lot of kids to have, through the
day. Study hall time will not help the students get through the day. Physical education is needed in
the students daily routine.
I think that the kids need to learn how to stay fit. The kids get shortage of exercise during their
school day. Therefor the students need to get physical movement during their day. Physical
education provides the students with varieties of workouts for the kids. The students love to go to
PE because they get to be with their friends and they get learning they need to get about their body.
Being mobile is vital to these kids they like active and they would be more alert in class.

Mercurial guitarist Mark Whitfield got the jazz world s attention during the 90 s, when the NY

Mark not only has collaborated with jazz legends such as Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown,

The Greatest Generation Essay
The Greatest Generation is a term used to describe the generation who were the children of the
Great Depression and who became the adults of the Second World War (Brokaw). There may be
strong reasons why other generations may be considered great. The generation born during the war
undertook the task of putting a man on the moon. This is perhaps the most important of all human
endeavors. They are certainly worthy of being considered great but not the greatest. In fifteen years
America and indeed the world endured the crushing poverty of the Great Depression and the
costliest war in all of human history. The enormous struggles and accomplishments of this

particularly married women joined the workforce in numbers never before seen Between 1940

The Seven Principles Of Making Marriage Work
The purpose of this paper is to explore the two primary relationships focused on in Knocked Up
(Apatow, Apatow, Robertson and Townsend, (2007), by using Gottman and Silver s (2015), The
Seven principles of Making Marriage Work, as a foundation for analysis. The exploration will
entail using some of Gottman and Silver s principles as a method of understanding Alison and Ben
s relationship, as well as Debbie and Pete s. Sine Gottman and Silver s book will be used as a
foundation, this will provide greater elaboration upon the strengths and weaknesses of each couple
s relationship. Although Knocked Upby Apatow et al. (2007) is fictional, many of the depicted
problems exist in actual relationships. Nevertheless, studying these issues will lead to a better
understanding of how to address these problems if encountered in the future. At first, the couples
have two very different relationships. Alison and Ben have been in a sense forced together, after
a one night stand leads to an unplanned pregnancy (Apatow et al., 2007). While on the other
hand, Debbie and Pete have been married for ten years with two children (Apatow et al., 2007).
So there is this new relationship that started rather unexpectedly, compared to the other
relationship, which has been forming for 10 years. So the couples are in different stages, but are
facing some of the same issues. Fairly early on, it is revealed that Debbie and Pete got married
after Debbie became pregnant with their first child (Apatow et

Essay on Branched Chain Amino Acids On Sports Performance
With sportsmen seeking alternatives to illegal and unsafe performance enhancing drugs, ergogenic
aids have come to their rescue. Ergogenic aids are supplements that enhance the performance of
athletes by improving their speed, strength and agility. A number of natural products are marketed
as ergogenic aids, which have found a ready market among sportspersons. Their biggest advantage
is that they are legal, apart from being safe and effective. Examples of such aids include branched
chain amino acids, creatine, medium chain triglycerides, pyruvates and vitamins.

Oxidation of these amino acids occurs in skeletal muscles. Though BCAAs are not used as a source
of energy in the body under normal conditions, they do contribute to energy generation during
heavy and strenuous exercise. The subsequent breakdown of these amino acids for energy
generation during heavy exercise leads to muscle damage and tear. Therefore, restoring them with
the help of protein supplements is extremely necessary to make up for the loss of proteins.
IV. Effect on athletic performance Innumerable studies have investigated the effects of BCAAs on
the performance of athletes. Studies and clinical trials have investigated their potential role in
decreasing fatigue, improving physical performance, increasing strength and affecting cognitive
abilities. A few of the most significant studies are discussed here. While BCAAs have been found
to be of help in enhancing sports performance, there is lack of sufficient evidence from clinical
trials. Therefore, while the intake of BCAAs has been proved to be of help in some cases, their
overall benefit in enhancement of sports performance is still debated and needs strong evidence.
Reduction of fatigue
BCAAs are reported to reduce central fatigue

Todd Burpo does a remarkable job translating, three year old, Colton s descriptions of his trip to

Another positive I found while reading the book Heaven is for Real is that I could not put it
down. This was because chapters were short and they always left the reader at a cliff hanger.
Burpo did a outstanding job keeping the reader engaged and wanting more by somehow creating
cliffhangers after every chapter. Whether it was whether Colton was going to make it out of
surgery or mid conversation about Colton s still born sister, Burpo made it impossible to not start
the next chapter to find out the answer or details to the newest bomb Colton dropped on his parents.
While some may be completely convinced by the innocence of the book, many skeptics

The Impact Of Economic Globalization
Globalization occurs in three forms: political globalization, cultural globalization, and economic
globalization. All forms work together to expand relationships and create a single place. On its
own Economic globalization is a way for economic relations to extend and integrate across the
world. Economic globalizationand its policies as well as, the ideology of neoliberalism have a way
of creating an inequality between countries and creates an endless debt cycle. International
economic organizations have caused long term effects due to the harsh conditions these
organizations impose. A prime example of this effect can be seen in countries such as Jamaica. It
is important to understand neoliberal policies and economic organizations in order to understand
how debt still plays a role in today s globalized economy.
In 1944 the Bretton Woods Conference took place; the main goal of this meeting as defined in
Amy Malek s lecture was to, find ways to stabilize global economy; break down trade barriers
(expand and encourage international trade post war) (Malek, 2017). Due to this conference, three
international economic organizations were created, the International Monetary Fund, World Trade
Organization, and the World Bank. It should be noted, that the International Monetary Fund and
World Bank were created for different reasons, but they soon began to work together. Esteemed
authors Smallman and Brown provide insight into this topic by stating that, the original distinction

The Holy Spirit Is God
The Holy Spirit is God Himself. He is a person that we can have a personal relationship with.
Also, the Holy Spirit is the one that God gave to us as a guide, to direct and teach us in living a
Holy life (King James Version, John 14:16). The Holy Spirit is the voice inside of us that tells us
when something is not right with the choices that we have made. The voice inside of us comes
from God, who loves and cares enough to show us our error that we have made. Also, the Holy
Spiritis part of the Trinity; where God transformed into three persons, the Father, the Son, and the

The Holy Spirit also acts in non believers as well. The Holy Spirit makes people feel guilty about
the things that they have done and helps them to ask for God forgiveness on their sin. (John
16:8 11). The Holy Spirit pulls on our hearts and minds asking us to repent and turn to God for
forgiveness and a new life. When the Apostle Paul was planting church in his missionary
journey, he preached lots about the duty of the Holy Spirit, and the role that he plays in our
lives for example in Roman 8:1 8. In view of this scripture, there is a very distinct difference
between the human flesh and the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul said that as long we become
Christian, the Spirit of Jesus Christ has set us free from the worldly law of sin. Whatever the flesh
could not do Jesus Christ has come to paid it all and to set us free from condemnation.
What is the Activity of the Holy Spirit?
The Bible talks about several roles that the Holy Spirit plays in the lives of people today. The
first thing that the Holy Spirit does is he provides conviction of sin to all people. John 16:8 said,
And when he comes, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment .
Also, the Holy Spirit works in several ways for many believers that follow Christ. One of the
roles that He works is to serve as a comforter and a helper in our daily life. In John 14:16 17 this
means that there is someone that is helping us and guiding us and encouraging us during difficult
time of

Psychological Factors of Addiction Essay
The basis for addiction can be assigned to a combination of social, physiological and psychological
aspects. Social factors highlight the fundamental tendency for humans to interact and form social
groups which contributes to the commencement of addiction. The intricacy of the human brain has
slowed the understanding of physiological and psychological factors, however experts agree the
neurotransmitter dopamineis instrumental to explaining the cause of addictionand ascertaining
successful pathways to assist addicted individuals. Analysing addiction within the domain of
methamphetamine use provides an insight to the causes and potential treatment strategies for these
individuals. There is no single treatment for methamphetamine addiction,... Show more content on

Ultimately, these factors contribute to the development of methamphetamine abuse but also
provide tangible strategies to counteract addiction. Boshears et al. (2011) suggest methamphetamine
users separate from existing social networks that encourage consumption and discover new
networks that support cessation of drug use. However, many methamphetamine addicts would be
forced to disassociate from immediate family or be required to terminate employment which create
limitations due to the impracticality of these changes. Evidently, social determinants contribute to
methamphetamine addiction, however successful treatment can only occur in conjunction with the
attenuation of significant physiological and psychological factors.
The complexity of the human brain creates mystery when determining the influence of
neurophysiological factors and their role in the process of addiction. There is a proposed
relationship between drug addiction and the mesolimbic dopamine system, with the mesolimbic
pathway from the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens considered the reward centre of
the human brain (Alcohol Rehab, 2011). A release of dopamine is necessary for reward which is
hypothesised to initiate the addiction cycle by providing positive reinforcement for drug self
administration (Feltenstein See, 2009). Methamphetamine triggers the release of dopamine from
synaptic vesicles which flood the synaptic cleft activating feelings of euphoria, well being

less shootings and catastrophes due to drugs. That s the purpose of drugtesting at jobs.
At work workers always have to be doing their job the correct way. For the employer they have

stop doing them and go on the right way in life. The purpose of the drug test is to get people to
stop doing them so everyone can be safer and more productive.
Snyder 1
There is at least a casualty a day caused by drugs. More Americans died from drug overdose in
2016 then died in the entirety of the Vietnam War. (Lopez). Innocent people die from them that
are just bystanders. This has to stop and drug tests are helping. A safer environment is the main
reason businesses started doing this. People should not have to give a life because of someone else
s actions. People at work are protected by the test as well. The employer saves money as well
because no equipment is destroyed and no lives will be taken.

Benefits Of Tryouts
For hundreds of years sports have been used as a way for kids and adults to cope with stress but
now with all these talented players it s no longer fair for the talented players to play with the
terrible players so in order to keep the talented players happy they created tryouts. Tryouts are a
kind of physical test that are used to determine what players are talented and deserve a spot on
the team and what players aren t very good and shouldn t be playing with good players. Tryouts
are beneficial for both players and schools because it allows poor schools to play and it reduces
the number of players and therefore helps develop gifted players. Tryouts cut down moneyby letting
those who are good stay making it better for games that are very costly such as football. This is
why many believe that sports are beneficial because they don t put poorer schools in debt, also it
doesn t make schools have to pay to get the materials needed, and finally they make it fair for the
good players by giving them more playing time.
My first reason why I believe tryouts are beneficial is because they don t put poor schools in debt
for expensive games because they wouldn t be able to pay for things such as equipment and

Genghis Kh The Emperor And Founder Of The Mongol Empire
Gunnar Burgin
Captain Honnen
History 300
16 November 2014
Genghis Khan Genghis Khan was the emperor and founder of the Mongol Empire, a man known
throughout history for his ruthlessness, and success, as head of the largest land based empire
during his tenure. A nomadic people, the Mongols spent many years prior to the great success of
Genghis living in turmoil, lacking a leader to unify and lead the people to greater success than
simply surviving. Prior to his death in August 1227 and subsequent burial back in Mongolia,
Genghis Khan s Mongol Empire spanned from China to Eastern Europe, Vietnam into Siberia,
encompassing the people and cultures of those conquered in these lands. In order to impose his will
and assert dominance over Russia, Eastern Europe, China, and the heartland of Islam, Genghis
Khan revolutionized warfare and weaponry, bringing a swift end to any enemy standing in his path.
With a territory stretching across Asia into Europe, and with his undersized army fighting and
defeating much larger forces, Genghis Khan s strongest attribute was his military prowess. Despite
conquering numerous civilizations over a vast area of land and influencing the cultures, governing,
social lives, and more, Genghis Khan s greatest influence on the world throughout his ventures was
his influence on the military, through tactics, weaponry, and leadership. Born sometime in the

Karl Popper The Enemy Of Certainty Analysis
In the three part informative bibliography Karl Popper, the enemy of certainty, published by The
Guardian, scientist and philosopher Karl Popper s perspective on science is identified and
discussed. Author Liz Williams describes how Karl Popper was driven by a passion for learning
and understanding the world around him, and eventually grew to reject the ideas of empiricism and
positivism. Popper states that deductive reasoning, rather than inductive reasoning, should be used
to evaluate a theorybased on the idea that proving a theory false provides a stronger argument
compared to proving a theory true. Popper also argues that theories cannot be considered
scientific theories unless they are able to be proven false, or are falsifiable. They must be able to
be tested, and have the ability to be proven false through those tests, before it can be considered a
scientific theory. Popper argues that scientific revolutions come about... Show more content on

Popper s scientific philosophy was solely based on truth, based on the idea that new scientific
theories are generated when old scientific theories are proven to be false; he states that in order for
a theory to be scientific, it must be falsifiable. On the other hand, Kuhn s philosophy was based on
thought, and how scientist s collective thoughts and theories change as concepts and practices
change with time. These two individuals have directly opposing philosophies truth versus thought.
Finally, Lakatos scientific philosophy acts as a happy medium between the two, describing science
and scientific revolutions as both truth and thought, although he did emphasize that truth may be a
more reliable factor. Whether it be truth, or thought, or both behind the changes in science over
time, it does not change the fact that scientific revolutions happen, and that they will continue to
happen throughout the course of

Comparison of News Reports Essay
Comparison of News Reports
On Thursday 22nd April 2004, Ron Atkinson, manager and footballing legend, was overheard
making a racist remark concerning player Marcel Desailly the black Chelsea defender during the
Chelsea Monaco Champion s League semi final.
The story received colossal press coverage from all of the newspapers, mainly because Atkinson is
famous for coaching so many black players. I have studies two newspapers accounts of the same
story. One paper is a tabloid (The Sun) and the other is a broadsheet (The Daily Telegraph). The
reason why I have chosen to examine a tabloid report and also a broadsheet is to discover the
similarities between them and also the contrasts in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also uses the technique of personalisation like the tabloid; however it is more formal and
does not use slang. It does not have as much impact as The Sun uses words like racist , it seems
less harmful because they are only costly thoughts instead. There is a more formal, serious picture;
he is shown doing his job in smart clothes and he looks dignified. There is only one picture and a
lot more text which is divided into eight columns.
The sun differs from the Daily Telegraph in content greatly. The Sun only has a short paragraph of
background information whereas The Daily Telegraph has quite a large section describing Atkinson
s tributes and achievements in football. Also The Sun has much shorter quotes in its article. This is
because The Sun is known to get straight to the point in articles whilst The Daily Telegraph usually
gives all sides of the argument before coming to a conclusion.
The Sun is part of the News Corporation Group owned by press baron Rupert Murdoch and is the
best selling British newspaper selling 3.5 million copies a day, compared to The Daily Telegraph
who is part of Hollinger Inc. owned by Conrad Black. In comparison to The Sun it sells over three
times less, a million copies per day are sold of The Daily Telegraph.
Ron Atkinson is a famous TV and football personality. This gives the story a high news value in
both the tabloid and the broadsheet

Ffa Creed Research Paper
I believe in the future of agriculture, with a faith born not of words but of deeds..... E.M. Tiffany
wrote the original FFA (Future Farmers of America) creed and it was revised at the 38th and 63rd
FFA National Convention, but it was adopted to the FFA at the third national convention. There are
649,355 current members that know this creed, but that number does not include the alumni (https:
//www.ffa.org/about/who we are/our membership). FFA is just only one amazing thing you can
do with agriculture. We will be taking a look at the problems, causes, and the solutions so that
more people can know the FFA creed and can discover something that they didn t know about
them and/or the agriculture experience. Some of the problems are the lack of knowledge, the
decline of agriculture, and the lack of younger generations not wanting anything to do with
agriculture. Most people in the cities like Indianapolis, for example don t think they can do
anything with agriculture because there is not a cornfields nor a bean fields like we... Show more

Now, for a hydroponics there are three ways you could do it; water culture, multi flow, and ebb and
flow. Water culture is a low cost and easy one and all you need is a styrofoam platform, water, and

plant trays with water and nutrients, a timer, float switch to control water levels, and plants; and
finally Ebb and flow and that s an easy system too and all it takes a plant tray, tubing, water pump,
nutrients, water, and plants. Yet, for all of these you need a container or a fish tank to put them

The Great Gatsby Theme Essay
In the film The Great Gatsby the themes of love, greed and corruption of the American Dream
are all set in the jazz age of New York City. One of the most prevalent themes of the story is that
of love, as well as its fleetingness. There are no stable relationships in present. Daisy and Tom s
marriage has been damaged by affairs from early in its life. Tom s affair with a hotel
chambermaid soon after their honeymoon. By the time the novel begins, Daisy is well aware of
Tom s regular affairs, seeming to suffer in silence until Gatsby offers her a way out. Myrtle s
relationship with Tom is no stronger, obviously based on a physical attraction, especially on the
part of Tom, who has little time for Myrtle outside the bedroom. Myrtle appears to be loved by
Wilson, but is unhappy in this relationship, apparently... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nick, the narrator, is unable to make commitments in his relationships, Jordan has had no lasting
relationship, discarding men when she has no further use for them. Partygoers are seen fighting
with spouses or else attend with mistresses or lovers. Only Gatsby seems capable of lasting love
his love for Daisy is unshaken till the end. Yet this love is unrealistic based not only on a
relationship started on a lie, but also needing a turning back of time to make it complete. However,
Gatsby s love for Daisy is not true love; it is infatuation based on objectification. She becomes the
symbol of everything he wants, rather than the complex human being she really is. The theme of
corruption is consistent throughout the film, every person involved in it somehow. Overall, the
society in which the film takes place is one of moral decadence. Whether their money is inherited
or earned, its inhabitant are morally decadent, living life in quest of cheap thrills and with no
seeming moral purpose to their lives. Any person who attempts to move up through the social
classes becomes corrupt in the

  • 2. The Characteristics Of An Epic Hero In The Epic Of Beowulf What makes epic hero stories so compelling? Is it the continuous freedom, courage, and value in society or is it the significance implemented in who the characters are? Stories have been passed down for generations. Some of the most famous examples is Beowulf, ВЁGilgameshВЁ , Iliad, and ВЁJulius Caesar.ВЁ Epic stories portray the development of an epic heroes characterization through courage, strength, and love of glory throughout the plot of a story. A major epic hero trait is courage. The act of picking yourself up after you were thrown down to help others. In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf saved the Danes. ВґВґAnd a young prince must be prudent like that, giving freely while his father lives so that afterwards in age when fighting starts steadfast companions will stand by him and hold the line. Behaviour that s admired is the path to power among people everywhere.ВґВґ (SparkNotes Beowulf) This selection is describing Beowulf as a prince and warrior who is courageous enough to fight his life for people he cares about. Since Grendel often attacks at night, it displays the setting as a more hard and rigid area. The behavior of saving people brings power within the epic hero. ВґВґ Beowulf got ready, donned his war gear, indifferent to death; his mighty, hand forged, fine webbed mail would soon meet with the menace underwater. It would keep the bone cage of his body safe.ВґВґ (Spark Notes Beowulf) In this selection, Beowulf is getting ready to go to war with Grendel s mother. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Economic Causes Of The American Revolution The thirteen colonies that became the USA were originally colonies of Great Britain. By the time the American Revolution took place, the citizens of these colonies were beginning to get tired of the British rule. Rebellion and discontent were rampant. For those people who see the change in the American government and society a real Revolution, the Revolution is essentially an economic one. The main reason the colonies started rebelling against mother England was the taxation issue. The colonies debated England s legal power to tax them and, furthermore, did not wish to be taxed without representation. This was one of the main causes of the Revolutionary War. The Revenue Act of 1764 made the constitutional issue of whether or not the King had the right to tax the thirteen coloniesan issue, and this eventually became an entering wedge in the great dispute that was finally to wrest the American colonies from England (Olsen, 6). It was the phrase taxation without representation that was to draw many to the cause of the American patriots against the mother country (6). The reaction against taxation was often violent and the most powerful and articulate groups in the population rose against the taxation (6). Resolutions denouncing taxation without representation as a threat to colonial liberties were passed (6). In October of 1765, colonial representatives met on their own initiative for the first time and decided to mobilize colonial opinion against parliamentary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Weaknesses Of Odysseus In Homer s Odyssey Odysseus illustrates countless strengths during the adventure of Aeolus the Laestrygonians. One of Odysseus strengths is his mastery in speech. After sailing for a while, Odysseus lands on the magical island of the Aeolians. While adventuring through the floating island he comes across the halls of Aeolus, the king of the Aeolians. As a result, he begs the king to help him reach his homeland, And then, when I begged him to send me on my way, he denied me nothing, he went about my passage. He gave me a sack, the skin of a full grown ox, binding inside the winds that howl from every quarter... (10.20 23). With his speech, Odysseusis able to persuade Aeolus to send him off to his homeland with the help of his divine powers. In addition, Odysseus also receives an abundance of gifts to speed him off on his journey home. These interactions with Aeolus provide Odysseus with ample materials to commence his journey to his homeland. Hence, it can be acknowledged that Odysseus mastery of speech assisted him with his journey home. Another one of Odysseus strengths is his ability to strategically plan his adventures. ... • 5. Essay On The Babylonians The Babylonian civilization existed from around 3000 BC until 539 BC. The civilization has its roots to Mesopotamia, a plain between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River, which is now in modern day Iraq. The Babylonians are notoriously famous in their discoveries and inventions, most of which we still use today. The civilization developed ideas such as astronomy, in which they created the Saros Cycle, a cycle used to predict solar and lunar eclipses. The Babylonians were also masters in architecture, constructing buildings like the Hanging Gardens using innovative techniques including glass covered bricks and adornments of gold and bronze. However, despite many of these discoveries being forgotten or lost, their advancements in mathematics have been kept for centuries, and have brought modern ideas of angles, quadratic equations and even knowledge about the Pythagoras theorem, before Pythagoras himself existed. • 6. Jenny Sullivan s First Love The poem First Love by Mick Gowar describes the affect that first love has. Rejection by Jenny Sullivan details the shame that rejection brings. The title First Love links to a sense of naivety and innocence. It suggests that the poem may be romantic and meaningful. On the other hand, the title Rejection instantly signifies a negative atmosphere and implies that the poem may be an elegy, as it could be exploring the darker, more sorrowful side of one s mind. Whilst the poems share some similarities, they do not have many ideas or themes in common. First Love includes themes such as desperation and naivety. These can be identified throughout the poem. Desperation is particularly evident in the second stanza with the exclamative Please! and the use of short phrases. The short phrases including Like you suggested. And ... This point is where I began to sense a link to mental illness as the jacket is used to represent a public symbol of shame, much like the way mental illness is viewed in society. This idea is illuminated again in the last quatrain where they describe themselves as feeling slightly leftover after all the guests /have gone. With the Russians now in Washington there are plenty of personnel around that are working within these capitol buildings. Lord of the Flies by William Golding is also a story which puts the characters in a raw environment and presents their action. These two works have the similarities in the way they set up the stories, the type of conflicts and the way they end the stories; and this similarities actually show how the things described in the stories are commonly deemed, and help the two stories to support each other s ideas. James II, a Catholic king, had been disposed of, and a Protestant king, William, husband of Mary, James s daughter, had taken over. Louis and James were able to get along but William and Louis were not. They began a war over what is now present day Belgium. Belgium was a key place for fortresses and harbors (Kissinger, pg.71). Old stresses between the King and Parliament, Church and Dissent, appeared to be undiminished and were joined by bitter divisions over the succession of William III and Mary II. This involved rebellion and war in Ireland and Scotland, and plots, riots, and insurrection in England (Hoppit, pg. 2). The Greatest Generation Essay The Greatest Generation is a term used to describe the generation who were the children of the Great Depression and who became the adults of the Second World War (Brokaw). There may be strong reasons why other generations may be considered great. The generation born during the war undertook the task of putting a man on the moon. This is perhaps the most important of all human endeavors. They are certainly worthy of being considered great but not the greatest. • 28. The Seven Principles Of Making Marriage Work The purpose of this paper is to explore the two primary relationships focused on in Knocked Up (Apatow, Apatow, Robertson and Townsend, (2007), by using Gottman and Silver s (2015), The Seven principles of Making Marriage Work, as a foundation for analysis. The exploration will entail using some of Gottman and Silver s principles as a method of understanding Alison and Ben s relationship, as well as Debbie and Pete s. Sine Gottman and Silver s book will be used as a foundation, this will provide greater elaboration upon the strengths and weaknesses of each couple s relationship. Although Knocked Upby Apatow et al. (2007) is fictional, many of the depicted problems exist in actual relationships. Nevertheless, studying these issues will lead to a better understanding of how to address these problems if encountered in the future. At first, the couples have two very different relationships. Alison and Ben have been in a sense forced together, after a one night stand leads to an unplanned pregnancy (Apatow et al., 2007). While on the other hand, Debbie and Pete have been married for ten years with two children (Apatow et al., 2007). So there is this new relationship that started rather unexpectedly, compared to the other relationship, which has been forming for 10 years. So the couples are in different stages, but are facing some of the same issues. Fairly early on, it is revealed that Debbie and Pete got married after Debbie became pregnant with their first child (Apatow et ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All forms work together to expand relationships and create a single place. On its own Economic globalization is a way for economic relations to extend and integrate across the world. Economic globalizationand its policies as well as, the ideology of neoliberalism have a way of creating an inequality between countries and creates an endless debt cycle. International economic organizations have caused long term effects due to the harsh conditions these organizations impose. A prime example of this effect can be seen in countries such as Jamaica. It is important to understand neoliberal policies and economic organizations in order to understand how debt still plays a role in today s globalized economy. In 1944 the Bretton Woods Conference took place; the main goal of this meeting as defined in Amy Malek s lecture was to, find ways to stabilize global economy; break down trade barriers (expand and encourage international trade post war) (Malek, 2017). The Holy Spirit is the voice inside of us that tells us when something is not right with the choices that we have made. When the Apostle Paul was planting church in his missionary journey, he preached lots about the duty of the Holy Spirit, and the role that he plays in our lives for example in Roman 8:1 8. In view of this scripture, there is a very distinct difference between the human flesh and the Holy Spirit. Whatever the flesh could not do Jesus Christ has come to paid it all and to set us free from condemnation. What is the Activity of the Holy Spirit? (2011) suggest methamphetamine users separate from existing social networks that encourage consumption and discover new networks that support cessation of drug use. However, many methamphetamine addicts would be forced to disassociate from immediate family or be required to terminate employment which create limitations due to the impracticality of these changes. Evidently, social determinants contribute to methamphetamine addiction, however successful treatment can only occur in conjunction with the attenuation of significant physiological and psychological factors. The complexity of the human brain creates mystery when determining the influence of neurophysiological factors and their role in the process of addiction. There is a proposed relationship between drug addiction and the mesolimbic dopamine system, with the mesolimbic pathway from the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens considered the reward centre of the human brain (Alcohol Rehab, 2011). A release of dopamine is necessary for reward which is hypothesised to initiate the addiction cycle by providing positive reinforcement for drug self administration (Feltenstein See, 2009).
