Around the world, various minimum legal drinking ages (MLDA) exist. There are countries like
Vietnam and Fiji who have no law at all, countries like Belgium and Germany with low ages of
sixteen or seventeen, and countries like the United States and India with ages as high as twenty
one (McCardell 21). Up until 1984 the United States had no federal MLDA law, and it was up to
the states to decide, but the National Minimum Drinking Age Actof 1984 changed all that: setting
