Research Methodology Of The Research Approach
This chapter outlines an overview of the research approach adopted in the study as well as the research
methodology and the practical approach adopted to achieve the set objectives of the study. In addition,
it also highlights the data collection methods, ethical considerations, and data analysis. Case studies
will be used as a research strategy as they are distinguished by their ability to investigate a
phenomenon which, in this case, will be the upgrading heritage buildings through sustainable designs
and construction. The chapter also rationalizes the sampling approaches and the research methods
used for collecting the data in the case studies. To achieve the objectives, data for this study will be
collected using two qualitative research methods: document analysis and semi structured interviews
which were used to give a scholarly definition of the term sustainable adaptation to heritage sites and
buildings which is part of the objectives. The chapter also looks at the qualitative analysis techniques
which will be used to analyze the data.
3.2 Research approach
The difference between qualitative and quantitative research is basically a methodological issue and
the researcher s decision to choose a specific research approach should be based on its suitability to
answer the established research questions (Bryman, 1992). A qualitative approach according to
(Creswell, 2003) should be a logical subjective approach and should be able to describe experiences

Description Of A Photo Journal Assignment
This photo journal assignment was very interesting and educational. It helped me look outside the box
and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact with
during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I
witnessed evaporation taking place in the creek. I have been going to this park for quite some time and
in the summer, water levels decrease drastically. Evaporation is one of the four phases in the
hydrologic cycle (water cycle). According to our Geosystems Eighth Edition book, Christopherson
say, Water travels endlessly through the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. [...]

Cloud falls into is the precipitation category. Water vapor, droplets of water suspended in the air,
builds up in the Earth s atmosphere. Water vapor in the atmosphere is visible as clouds and fog
(http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/condensation/). Precipitation the process when water is
released from clouds in different types such as rain, snow, hail or sleet.
My second relatable topic that I came into contact with were these beautiful stepping stones. These
large stepping stones are sedimentary rock which is one of the rock types in the rock cycle. The word
sedimentary means that the rocks was formed by organic minerals and different particles. This rock
forming process can take many years and it starts when rocks weather and erode. This specific
stepping stone that I encountered was known as chert. So how is chert formed exactly? According to
Geoscience News and information (http://geology.com/rocks/chert.shtml), When microcrystals of
silicon dioxide grow within soft sediments that become limestone or chalk [...] when dissolved silica
is transported to the formation site by the movement of groundwater.
Global warming and the greenhouse effect were some of the negative topics that I researched. After
further research for each topic, I became aware how I contribute to global warming. On my way to the
park, I was driving my car and then it hit me. I remembered that for every gallon of gas used, our cars
are accounted for 24 pounds of

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Analysis
Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation in the
intestinal mucosa and transmural. IBD is divided into two main categories Crohn s disease (CD) and
ulcerative colitis (UC). While there is no known cure for IBD, current therapies can only reduce the
inflammation that triggers the signs and symptoms and induce long term remission. Therefore, better
treatment modalities for the complex IBD are still evolving. The increased understanding of the
underlying immunopathology has helped identify new targeted treatment options using stem cells that
are capable of modulating the immune system. Haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and mesenchymal
stromal cells (MSC) are the most evaluated stem cell treatment ... Show more content on

ectodermal and endodermal cells [26, 45]. They also express NANOG and Sox2 transcription factors
which enables them to utilise self renewal pathways similar to those in embryonic stem cells [46].
They also secrete growth factors, cytokines and chemokines and express Toll like receptors (TLR) 2,

both repair the tissue damage caused by the disease and modify the immune response of

Surveillance Cameras Should Be Public Places
Surveillance Cameras Earlier this year my brother and I were hit by a white Ford truck, while riding to
school. The driver of the truck quickly sped off immediately after the accident, leaving us scared, and
confused and the car totaled. If only there was a surveillance camera that could have witnessed it. The
camera could have got a clear view of his license plate, or even him. More surveillance cameras
should be installed in public places because they are useful for catching criminals, protecting people,
and growing the economy. Every day there are property crimes, assault crimes personal crimes and if
there is a way to benefit the safety the citizens it should be taken advantage of. First, the more
surveillance cameras that are in an area the lower the rate of the criminal participating in criminal
activity (Brown). Research shows that surveillance cameras are not as effective in all locations and
crimes, but there is evidence that they decrease property crime rates (Brown). There are already
surveillance cameras at most stop lights and in most stores to capture images of people in case
someone breaks the law, but if there were more surveillance in public places it would be easier to
catch crimes other than just someone running a red light or shoplifting. For example, if a child was
kidnapped, the police would already have video evidence of the kidnapper. This would make it easier
to identify the person. Overall, more surveillance would make police investigations

Speech About The Archangel Ariel
The Archangel Ariel embodies feminine strength and encourages strength through gentle means, only
using force when absolutely necessary. She is the lioness of the angelic realm, and as such, she
champions those who cannot fend for themselves and are often victims of the power of others,
particularly women, children, and animals. When Daniel was thrown into the lions den to be mauled
and devoured, for example, her angelic presence interceded, held the lions at bay, and protected Daniel
s life. She helped him to soothe the lions and to lay down with them without fear or danger.
Ariel is the protector of the animal kingdom and keeps balance between both predator and prey. She
helps us to understand and communicate with animals and to heal them. By placing our hands on a
sick or injured animal and calling her name, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The animal kingdom and the human kingdom are not much different from each other. Look to the
animal world to learn great lessons about moderation, strength, defense, nurturing, and symbiosis.
Recognize that all species have a place on the earth, and it is the gentle balance of all species that
keeps the world in check. Be kind to each other and respect the natural world and animal world with

Order is craved in our society. Take the recent terrorist attacks in London. What was the world s
response? World leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, instructed the public to remain
...united beyond all borders in horror and sorrow, but also in determination (RT News, 2017). This
sense of fortitude, avoidance of rash decisions and the importance of order is not new to western
society. Despite originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, the central themes of Neo Classicism are
still deeply ingrained in our contemporary society. These themes inform the public of the importance
of discipline and emotional restraint, the value of civility and the significance of social responsibility,

Like Wickham, the audience is positioned to marginalise Nero, viewing him as cold, calculating and
cruel. This is highlighted through cool toned, chiaroscuro lighting and costuming Nero to look
malicious and menacing through facial tattoos and angular features. In Pride and Prejudice, Wickham
is represented as uneducated and uncivilised, writing that ...his studying the law was mere pretence,
and now being free from all restraint, his life was a life of idleness and dissipation (pg. 195). This Neo
Classical ideal is represented on the board. By emphasising Nero s unnecessary genocide of worlds,
the audience is manipulated to believe that the character is simple minded and primitive. This
reinforces the necessity of civility in modern society, demonising those who do not conform to these
standards.
Our society s value of the Neo Classicisms emphasis on ...emotions governed by personal restraint,
decorum and discipline... and the value of intellect and reason is highlighted through the correlation
between Star Trek and If (Stanners, 2009). Towards the beginning of the film, a flashback of Spock s
childhood occurs. As he is neither human or Vulcan, Spock is bullied and lashes out at his fellow

society have and what happens to those who do not conform. Distraught by his loss of temper, Spock

The Effect Of Breastfeeding On Ovarian And Breast Cancer...
Introduction
Since some years, there has been fundamental shift in infant nutrition research due to increasing
evidence that the role of early nutrition during this vital period of life has deep biological effects and
has an important consequence both in long and short term health (Fewtrell 2007).
The research that has been done in this area offers strong evidence that human milk feeding decreases
the severity and incidence of a vast range of infectious diseases (Garner 1997). There are many
benefits of breastfeeding reduces the ovarian and breast cancer risks and a reduction in other types of
systemic health such as obesity, overweight, asthma and morbidity. In this way breastfeeding also
becomes one of the main causes of benefits for the mothers (Horta 2013).
In their report, WHO also recommends the exclusive breastfeeding until the infant is six months old.
They further, recommend that the children should consume breastfeeding complemented with food
intake until they are two years old (Horta 2013).
Formula fed vs. Breastfed
The evidence that is present regarding the infant feeding as a risk factor for dental caries in
inconsistent in many ways. The risk regarding dental caries is closely related to carbohydrate content
in breast milk besides the factors that decide the length of contact between the erupted dentition and
the breast milk (Danielsson 2009).
In contrast to formula, breast milk contains breast specific Lactobacilli and other substances that

An Organization For Employee Incentives
Short Paper
In any organization implementing employee incentives will only make the business flourish. An
incentive is something that motivates an individual to perform to the best of their ability. Using
incentives to motivate the employees can create a successful business, but it has to be done properly.
In fact, employee incentives relate to positive reinforcements because if an individual gets rewarded
for performing a task efficiently, then they are more likely to repeat that task again. Some people
believe that money is as the only incentive to motivate employees, but that is incorrect. Money can
only motivate employees when a task is simple and does not require conceptual, creative thinking.
(YouTube) Consequently, money does not always influence individuals and may create an even bigger
problem. According to the book, An important principle is that the stronger the incentive intensity, the
stronger the motivation, but also the greater the chance that there will be unintended, undesirable
consequences. In other words, if there is a giant cash reward in play, this will increase motivation of
all employees, which may lead to an unfortunate result because the employees will become stressed
out. Therefore, the more a manager creates employee incentives the more the company will benefit in
the end. Managers have to first start by treating their employees as people and nothing else. In fact,
employee recognition programs create an increased sense of worth and improved

The Internal Combustion Engine
1 Introduction
Since the advent of the internal combustion engine nearly two centuries ago, humans have become
increasingly reliant on fuel to power these engines. Our only method, historically, for obtaining this
fuel is to probe the earth and oceans until crude oil is struck. Crude oil is termed a fossil fuel as it
takes hundreds of millions of years to form. Crude oil is extracted from a geological reservoir and
subsequently refined into the various fuels which we use at ever increasing rates (petroleum, diesel,
aviation fuel etc). Unfortunately we are not finding new oil deposits at anything like the rates we are
consuming, so logically we will eventually run out. Many of the alternate energy sources currently
available (electric engines, fuel cells and ethanol) have low energy density and do not scale well to
larger vehicles like aeroplanes and trucks. Therefore finding new renewable sources of energy to
power our current and future devices is paramount to our continuation as a successful species.
This project focuses on the prokaryotic enzyme, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 DGAT1 (not to be
confused with eukaryotic DGA1P a protein which provides the same function but is very different in
sequence and structure). This enzyme is encoded by the atf1 gene in Rhodococcus opacus PD630.
DGAT is important because it catalyses the final, rate limiting step, in the Kennedy pathway. This step
is the transfer of an acyl group from acyl CoA to diacylglycerol, creating

Police Officers As Beacon For Justice
In the past the media portrayed police officers as beacon for justice. Based on personal experiences,
until about the 1990 s every little boy growing up wanted to be the good guy. However in today s new
popular culture, young boys are no longer arguing over who gets to be the good guy. The villain is
now seen as a viable option. The difference in views comes from the mass media; police officers are
now being represented in a more negative characteristic. Some police portrayals show the police as
being just as corrupted or evil as the criminals they are supposed to be apprehending. This illustrate
the mass media have an influence that goes far beyond their role in the entertainment industry. Police
have been portrayed negatively in the media for quite some time and it seems to be getting worse.
Music, social media, and even the news have a negative impact on the way police are being viewed. In
fact, now anyone with a smart phone or other type of digital recording can capture police officers at
their worse adding to the tainted image of our law enforcement agents. For instance, a Fort Worth
police officer was videoed taped using pepper spray on a group of motorcyclists as they rode past him
(Heinz Gordon, n.d.). In mere moments this video was upload to YouTube and became a viral video
over the next few days with more than 2,800,000 views in a two month span (East Texas Heat
Productions, n.d.). Furthermore, the local news exacerbates the issues by continually running

character with some wonderful qualities. Kent s character is the most loyal, brave, truthful, wise, and

himself as Lear s physician. He wants to remind him or show him the right path. So, when Cordelia

Detrimental Effects of Open Access Policies
Detrimental Effects of Open Access Policies In this paper, a bioeconomic model used by Barbier in
two separate papers to explain the relationship between shrimp farming and destruction of mangroves
in Thailand s coastal zone waters (Barbier, 2003) and the Laguna de Terminos in Mexico (Barbier and
Strand, 1998) will be used to examine the detrimental effects of clam farming on the Venetian Lagoon
ecosystem. Barbier (2003) uses an intertemporal model of an open access fishery to illustrate the
changes in mangrove area (or in this case, area of healthy seafloor) on the carrying capacity of the
stock and therefore on production, examining the relationship between the stock (S) and number of
fishermen (L). This model operates under several assumptions. The first is that in order to incorporate
a habitat fishery linkage in a bioeconomic fishery model, it must be assumed that the habitat s role in
supporting the growth and maturation of species as a breeding ground and nursery has an effect on the
carrying capacity and biological growth of the stock of the fish (Barbier, 2003). Using . Using M_(t )
to denote the area of healthy seafloor, any change in the stock can be illustrated as: (1) S_(t+1)
S=F(S,M_t ) h(S,L). Therefore, net expansion of the stock occurs because of biological growth in the
current period F(S,M_t), net of harvesting h(S,L), which is a function of the stock and effort. This
relationship between the area of seafloor and biological growth is assumed to be

of Dryden Corporation and John is the CEO of Mega Corporation. John has been talking to Jack about
the possibility of joining Mega Corporation s board of directors. Sam Bigger is the chairman and
former CEO of Mega Corporation. They need an answer from Jack by the end of the month in order to
get his name in for nomination. However, there are some issues that Jack wants to think through and
discuss with his wife before making a decision. First, Jack is worried about the future of Dryden
Corporation. Even though the company has grown and been successful for the past ten years, it has
been rather stagnant lately. He isn t sure how to get it back on the right track. One option is an
acquisition with Mega Corporation, which seems to always do well. Mega has acquired 20 companies
and sold 10 of them. Sam Bigger never lost money on any of the deals, and even became profitable
with some of the investments. On the other hand, Mega Corporation s financials are going downhill.

The Pacific Campaign Of World War II
The Pacific Campaign of World War II showed an uncommon test for the United States. The
Americans were successful for some reasons including the commitment of US General Douglas
MacArthur and the Australian s effect on the war. Numerous Successful attributes identified with the
war were the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Battle of Midway and The Battle of Coral
Sea. The Pacific Campaign for the US was initiated after the bombing of Pearl Harbour which was
done by the Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbour quickly aroused an
isolated country without hesitation. Public opinion had been moving towards support for entering the
war amid 1941, however extensive resistance stayed until the assault. Overnight, Americans joined the
allies against Japan. American solidarity in the war exertion most likely made the unconditional
surrender position later taken by the Allied Powers. Many Historians believed that this effort by the
Japanese doomed them to defeat because they had awoken the sleeping giants of the US. Once
awoken the US were able to have an immense impact on the pacific theatres. General Douglas
MacArthur s impact on WWII: MacArthur was the Chief of Staff of the United States Army amid the
1930s and assumed an unmistakable part in the Pacific Campaign within World War II. After the
Philippine fiasco, MacArthur started the long crusade to crush Japanese military force in the pacific.

Essay about Pet Health Insurance
What is pet health insurance
Pet health insurance is not very much like the health insurance that we are used to. For regular human
health insurance, in many cases the person receiving the health care does not see the costs of their
health care as the health care provider bills the insurance company directly. However, pet health
insurance is different in that no pet health insurance provider in the United States pays the pet health
care provider directly, instead you submit your claims to the insurer and you receive a reimbursement
for expenses. Furthermore, pet health insurance is drastically cheaper than human health insurance as
the upper end of veterinary costs, although rising, are significantly lower than that of human health ...

However, this focus is on human health care. Non pet owners, and maybe even many pet owners, do
not realize it, but pet health care prices have been skyrocketing over the past few decades for many of
the same reasons that human health care costs have been on the rise. Americans spent around $24
billion on health care for their pets in 2006, an amount nearly double what was spent in
1996(http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=7827666 page=1).
New technology in pet health care
Technological progress has advanced so much in health care for pets that there are now many services
available to your pets that up until a few years ago were only available to humans. Following are a
few technological advances in medicine that up until recently were available only to humans but are
now available for widespread use in pet care as well.

Freshman School Experience
Freshman year, the first year of high school. No one knows what s going to happen and who they are
in this new environment. Are you nervous? Because I am. As I walked into school, the smell of
perfume and cologne filled my nose. Having my binder squeezed to my chest, and the feeling of
sweaty hands; I tried not to act nervous. I see a boy walk past me, his dark brown hair and tall figure
lured me as I watched him pass without a glance in my direction. As I walked down the long freshman
hall with checkered tiles and cream colored lockers, the eyes of my classmates turned in my direction.
The feeling of anxiety fell over me. I quickly headed to my first class when the bell rang not wanting
to be late. Seeing my friends made me more comfortable.
The first several periods of the day passed in a blur, finally we reached the last period, band. I walked

A Brief Note On Physician Assisted Suicide And Euthanasia
Before I start, I want you all to know that this speech is meant to challenge your beliefs and show
there are always two sides of the story. Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) is a very touchy subject;
some people are passionately for it and some people are passionately against. Everyone has their own
personal views or personal opinions but this is one of the situations where you would not know what
you would do unless you were in that particular situation. Some people choose to die with dignity and
would like to control how, where, or when they die. Some people would choose to avoid excruciating

The Arguments In The Downside Of Grit, By Alfie Kohn
The idea of grit is to be used to help students improve on goals they ve made, but in the The Downside
of Grit by Alfie Kohn he would argue that somethings are better left alone instead of trying to pursue
them and achieving them with little success. Kohn claims that grit can be counterproductive because
anyone could be continuing something that doesn t make them content with the outcome. He also
discusses about how people with grit could experience issues with psychological health when you try
over and over again and end up with continuous failure. It would be better to find an alternative
pathway that would cause less stress, and end with success. Another argument that Kohn has is against
the reliability of the research done on grit doesn t rely on evidence. It ... Show more content on

He also approaches the idea of creating a learning environment that help students explore ideas. This
would help students participate more in their education. Overall grit is used for students to develop
long term goals (Para 25). Seemingly students should explore their interest instead of following
through with a goal they might not enjoy. Kohn makes it clear that you shouldn t go through with a
goal if it doesn t give you satisfaction. Kohn also states that the motives of your goal should come first
before you take action. Kohn states that grit is applied more to students than adults for completing
academic goals, but fails to mention how grit can be applied outside of school. Alfie Kohn explains
that there is no point in continuing with a problem that has no solution, just like how you shouldn t
continue with a goal that doesn t give you contentment. I agree with Kohn that there s no point in
continuing with a task that doesn t feel worth it to complete, a point that needs emphasizing

Cato s Analysis
In addition to training and self control, Rome was suggested to value discipline in education. Children,
specifically boys, were expected to be well schooled and regiments, physically and mentally. Cato was
spoken to have been his son s reading teacher, tutor, and athletic trainer, forcing his son to fight and
brave the extremes of nature (Plutarch 411). As Rome s military vigor was seen as important to the
strength of the empire, Plutarch hints that it was crucial for children to be disciplined into great
fighters. Cato s attention to his son s education had appeared to be successful in Plutarch s eyes, as
Cato s son grew into a formidable soldier despite his frail body (412). Education was fundamental to
Romans in order to practice discipline

Copyright Law Of 1976 Summary
The Copyright Law of 1976 provided teachers with guidelines and allowances to reproduce
copyrighted materials to teach in face to face classrooms, but Congress revised the laws in 2001 to
meet the needs of educators teaching students through distance learning. Before the Technology,
Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2001 (TEACH Act), the Copyright Law of 1976
provided only for display of copyrighted broadcasts in a classroom setting or place of instruction, to
homebound students, and to government employees. The Copyright Law of 1976 prohibited most
digital transmissions because of the inherent need to reproduce and distribute materials through
distance learning platforms (United States Senate 107th Congress, 1st Session, 2001). ... Show more

the movie are of relation to a certain specific kind of audience viewing the lives of five teenagers with

The Controversy Over Free Will And Determinism
Introduction
It has been debated over centuries whether us humans have control over our destiny, and if we are
really able to decide on our own. The controversy between free will and determinism has been argued
about for years. If we look into a dictionary, free will is define as the power given to human beings to
be able to make free choices that is unconstrained by external circumstances or a force such as fate or
divine intervention. Determinism is defined as a philosophical doctrine that every event, act, and
decision is the inescapable consequence of antecedents that are independent of the human will.
Determinism states that humans have no free will to choose what they wish. Due to this fact,
contemporary philosophers cannot agree whether free will does exist, let alone it be a divine influence.
Three major Beliefs
There are three major arguments in the thought of free and they are libertarianism, compatibilism, and
fatalism. There are both a religious and secular position for this argument. The religious aspect of free
will is that it is an objective by God, while the secular position is subjective to causal determinism and
the effect of the physical and concrete things on the process of decision making.
In an article by Alvin Plantinga he tackled a few types of compatibilism, and he believes that he has
found an objective to serve as a middle ground in the free will debate. Plantinga believes that God had
already began the process, with an abrupt cause, and since

Lolita Innocence Essay
advances. But by six she was wide awake, and by six fifteen we were technically lovers. I am going to
tell you something very strange: it was she who seduced me. (Nabokov 132). However, this accusation
against Lolita again proves Humbert to be unreliable and his need for control by blaming Lolita for
her perilous magic of a nymphet. He also points out that he was not even Lolita s first sexual
experience, ultimately, he justifies that he did not possess her sexual innocence. Although, he also
reveals Lolita to appear physically inexperienced in which he says, she was not quite prepared for
certain discrepancies between a kid s life and mine. (Nabokov 135). Humbert contradicts himself in
his use of innocence in the way that Lolita has prior sexual experience, so therefore by his definition,
she is no longer innocent; however, he indicates she remains innocent in respect to knowledge and
naivety. Humbert alludes to his belief that Lolita is innocent due to her lack of knowledge and
understanding during their first sexual encounter in which he suggests she seduced him, She saw the
stark act merely as part of a youngster s furtive world, unknown to adults. What adults did for
purposes of procreation was no business of hers. (Nabokov 133). These passages reveal is far from
being sexually mature and understanding the magnitude of adult sexuality, whereas Humbert does
understand. Hagemann elaborates on Humbert s manipulation of innocence which ultimately points in
his unreliability by stating, If lack of knowledge of or experience with sex ... Show more content on

The Use of Electroconvulsive Therapy in Patients with...
The Use of Electroconvulsive Therapy in Patients with Severe Depression or Schizophrenia In
surveys, individuals with both a history of severe depression and a history of physical trauma due to
an accident ranked the pain of mental illness as much worse than that of physical trauma (Isaac 5).
Mental illnesses cause immense suffering and potentially even death; in the year 2000, the suicide rate
of patients suffering from depression was estimated at fifteen percent. This is a testament to the fact
that mental illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia are serious issues, and those suffering from
them deserve the most effective treatment available. Many psychiatrists turn to anti depressants and
talk therapy in attempts to heal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The origin of these skeptical and fearful preconceptions is the imperfect history of the practice. The
most primitive forms of electroconvulsive therapy began in the 1930s, with the injection of various
chemicals into mental health patients, inducing seizures. The first published reports of such treatments
came from Ladislas Meduna, a Hungarian neuropsychiatrist whose experiments sparked the interest of
clinicians worldwide (Fink, Electroconvulsive 1). The first account of actual electroconvulsive therapy
was in 1938 in Italy; neurologist Ugo Cerletti, and his assistant Lucio Bini, applied electrodes on both
temples of the patient, and passed electricity through the brain, causing the patient to have a seizure
(Fink, Electroconvulsive 2). The earliest ECT procedures were administered without anesthesia or
muscle relaxants, and the seizures it induced were brutal, often resulting in fractures and severe
memory loss. However, the success of this experimentation outweighed the trepidation it created, and
the use of ECT progressed, using Cerletti s studies as a foundation and orienting around the use of
electric currents instead of chemicals. Despite its growing popularity and usage, through the 1950s,
the procedure was administered recklessly, still lacking the use of anesthetics or muscle relaxants, and
intensifying negative effects with implementation of a higher, more dangerous level of electrical
current (Electroconvulsive Mayo 4 5). During the

Essay On Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of the Victorian Era. She was born on March 6, 1806
at Coxhoe Hall, Durham, England. Barrett had a big family, she was the oldest out of 12 children. Her
parents, Mary Graham Clarke and Edward Barrett, educated their children at home. The family made
their money off of Jamaican sugar plantations and depended on slave labor. Barrett began her love for
reading and writing poetry at a very young age. She began reading the classic poetry written by
William Shakespeare and John Milton. At the age of 12, she wrote her first book of poetry. When
Barrett was 14 years old, she suffered a spinal injury while riding her pony. The doctors diagnosed her
with a skeletal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Barrett continued to publish her books anonymously, and in 1826 she published her book, An Essay
on Mind and Other Poems. This book really started the kickoff in her writing career.
In 1829, Barrett s mother passed away. Due to the abolition of slavery, the Barretts income decreased
tremendously. In 1832, Edward Barrett was forced to sell his rural estate at an auction. After selling
their land, the family rented cottages in a coastal town for the next three years before settling in
London. In 1833, after the move, Barrett published her translation of Aeschylus s Prometheus Bound,
an Ancient Greek tragedy. A few years after that she published The Seraphim and Other Poems, a
book expressing her opinion on Christian faith.
Barrett s health continued to decline, she moved in with her brother, Edward, near the sea of Torquay.
That same year, Edward drowned while sailing in the waters of Torquay. Barrett was forced to move
back to London, she was physically and emotionally weak, but that didn t stop here from her writing.
In 1844 she published her collection Poems. This collection drew lots of attention from the public, in
particular, this drew the attention of the English Poet, Robert Browning. Browning began to write
letters to Barrett, confessing his love. Over twenty months, they exchanged 574 letters to each other.
Barrett and Browning fell deeply in love with each other and wished to marry. Edward Barrett was

  • 2. Research Methodology Of The Research Approach This chapter outlines an overview of the research approach adopted in the study as well as the research methodology and the practical approach adopted to achieve the set objectives of the study. In addition, it also highlights the data collection methods, ethical considerations, and data analysis. Case studies will be used as a research strategy as they are distinguished by their ability to investigate a phenomenon which, in this case, will be the upgrading heritage buildings through sustainable designs and construction. The chapter also rationalizes the sampling approaches and the research methods used for collecting the data in the case studies. To achieve the objectives, data for this study will be collected using two qualitative research methods: document analysis and semi structured interviews which were used to give a scholarly definition of the term sustainable adaptation to heritage sites and buildings which is part of the objectives. The chapter also looks at the qualitative analysis techniques which will be used to analyze the data. 3.2 Research approach The difference between qualitative and quantitative research is basically a methodological issue and the researcher s decision to choose a specific research approach should be based on its suitability to answer the established research questions (Bryman, 1992). A qualitative approach according to (Creswell, 2003) should be a logical subjective approach and should be able to describe experiences and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Description Of A Photo Journal Assignment This photo journal assignment was very interesting and educational. It helped me look outside the box and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact with during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I witnessed evaporation taking place in the creek. I have been going to this park for quite some time and in the summer, water levels decrease drastically. Evaporation is one of the four phases in the hydrologic cycle (water cycle). According to our Geosystems Eighth Edition book, Christopherson say, Water travels endlessly through the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. Water vapor in the atmosphere is visible as clouds and fog (http://nationalgeographic.org/encyclopedia/condensation/). Precipitation the process when water is released from clouds in different types such as rain, snow, hail or sleet. My second relatable topic that I came into contact with were these beautiful stepping stones. These large stepping stones are sedimentary rock which is one of the rock types in the rock cycle. The word sedimentary means that the rocks was formed by organic minerals and different particles. This rock forming process can take many years and it starts when rocks weather and erode. This specific stepping stone that I encountered was known as chert. So how is chert formed exactly? According to Geoscience News and information (http://geology.com/rocks/chert.shtml), When microcrystals of silicon dioxide grow within soft sediments that become limestone or chalk [...] when dissolved silica is transported to the formation site by the movement of groundwater. Global warming and the greenhouse effect were some of the negative topics that I researched. After further research for each topic, I became aware how I contribute to global warming. On my way to the park, I was driving my car and then it hit me. I remembered that for every gallon of gas used, our cars are accounted for 24 pounds of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Analysis Abstract Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are group of disorders that cause chronic inflammation in the intestinal mucosa and transmural. IBD is divided into two main categories Crohn s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). While there is no known cure for IBD, current therapies can only reduce the inflammation that triggers the signs and symptoms and induce long term remission. Therefore, better treatment modalities for the complex IBD are still evolving. The increased understanding of the underlying immunopathology has helped identify new targeted treatment options using stem cells that are capable of modulating the immune system. • 6. Surveillance Cameras Should Be Public Places Surveillance Cameras Earlier this year my brother and I were hit by a white Ford truck, while riding to school. The driver of the truck quickly sped off immediately after the accident, leaving us scared, and confused and the car totaled. If only there was a surveillance camera that could have witnessed it. The camera could have got a clear view of his license plate, or even him. More surveillance cameras should be installed in public places because they are useful for catching criminals, protecting people, and growing the economy. Every day there are property crimes, assault crimes personal crimes and if there is a way to benefit the safety the citizens it should be taken advantage of. First, the more surveillance cameras that are in an area the lower the rate of the criminal participating in criminal activity (Brown). Research shows that surveillance cameras are not as effective in all locations and crimes, but there is evidence that they decrease property crime rates (Brown). There are already surveillance cameras at most stop lights and in most stores to capture images of people in case someone breaks the law, but if there were more surveillance in public places it would be easier to catch crimes other than just someone running a red light or shoplifting. For example, if a child was kidnapped, the police would already have video evidence of the kidnapper. This would make it easier to identify the person. Overall, more surveillance would make police investigations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She is the lioness of the angelic realm, and as such, she champions those who cannot fend for themselves and are often victims of the power of others, particularly women, children, and animals. When Daniel was thrown into the lions den to be mauled and devoured, for example, her angelic presence interceded, held the lions at bay, and protected Daniel s life. She helped him to soothe the lions and to lay down with them without fear or danger. Ariel is the protector of the animal kingdom and keeps balance between both predator and prey. World leaders such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, instructed the public to remain ...united beyond all borders in horror and sorrow, but also in determination (RT News, 2017). This sense of fortitude, avoidance of rash decisions and the importance of order is not new to western society. Despite originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, the central themes of Neo Classicism are still deeply ingrained in our contemporary society. These themes inform the public of the importance of discipline and emotional restraint, the value of civility and the significance of social responsibility, all essential to maintain harmony in our ... • 9. The Effect Of Breastfeeding On Ovarian And Breast Cancer... Introduction Since some years, there has been fundamental shift in infant nutrition research due to increasing evidence that the role of early nutrition during this vital period of life has deep biological effects and has an important consequence both in long and short term health (Fewtrell 2007). The research that has been done in this area offers strong evidence that human milk feeding decreases the severity and incidence of a vast range of infectious diseases (Garner 1997). There are many benefits of breastfeeding reduces the ovarian and breast cancer risks and a reduction in other types of systemic health such as obesity, overweight, asthma and morbidity. In this way breastfeeding also becomes one of the main causes of benefits for the mothers (Horta 2013). In their report, WHO also recommends the exclusive breastfeeding until the infant is six months old. They further, recommend that the children should consume breastfeeding complemented with food intake until they are two years old (Horta 2013). Formula fed vs. Breastfed The evidence that is present regarding the infant feeding as a risk factor for dental caries in inconsistent in many ways. The risk regarding dental caries is closely related to carbohydrate content in breast milk besides the factors that decide the length of contact between the erupted dentition and the breast milk (Danielsson 2009). • 10. An Organization For Employee Incentives Short Paper In any organization implementing employee incentives will only make the business flourish. An incentive is something that motivates an individual to perform to the best of their ability. Using incentives to motivate the employees can create a successful business, but it has to be done properly. In fact, employee incentives relate to positive reinforcements because if an individual gets rewarded for performing a task efficiently, then they are more likely to repeat that task again. Some people believe that money is as the only incentive to motivate employees, but that is incorrect. Money can only motivate employees when a task is simple and does not require conceptual, creative thinking. (YouTube) Consequently, money does not always influence individuals and may create an even bigger problem. According to the book, An important principle is that the stronger the incentive intensity, the stronger the motivation, but also the greater the chance that there will be unintended, undesirable consequences. In other words, if there is a giant cash reward in play, this will increase motivation of all employees, which may lead to an unfortunate result because the employees will become stressed out. Therefore, the more a manager creates employee incentives the more the company will benefit in the end. Managers have to first start by treating their employees as people and nothing else. In fact, employee recognition programs create an increased sense of worth and improved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Internal Combustion Engine 1 Introduction Since the advent of the internal combustion engine nearly two centuries ago, humans have become increasingly reliant on fuel to power these engines. Our only method, historically, for obtaining this fuel is to probe the earth and oceans until crude oil is struck. Crude oil is termed a fossil fuel as it takes hundreds of millions of years to form. Crude oil is extracted from a geological reservoir and subsequently refined into the various fuels which we use at ever increasing rates (petroleum, diesel, aviation fuel etc). Unfortunately we are not finding new oil deposits at anything like the rates we are consuming, so logically we will eventually run out. Many of the alternate energy sources currently available (electric engines, fuel cells and ethanol) have low energy density and do not scale well to larger vehicles like aeroplanes and trucks. Therefore finding new renewable sources of energy to power our current and future devices is paramount to our continuation as a successful species. This project focuses on the prokaryotic enzyme, diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 DGAT1 (not to be confused with eukaryotic DGA1P a protein which provides the same function but is very different in sequence and structure). This enzyme is encoded by the atf1 gene in Rhodococcus opacus PD630. DGAT is important because it catalyses the final, rate limiting step, in the Kennedy pathway. This step is the transfer of an acyl group from acyl CoA to diacylglycerol, creating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Police Officers As Beacon For Justice In the past the media portrayed police officers as beacon for justice. Based on personal experiences, until about the 1990 s every little boy growing up wanted to be the good guy. However in today s new popular culture, young boys are no longer arguing over who gets to be the good guy. The villain is now seen as a viable option. The difference in views comes from the mass media; police officers are now being represented in a more negative characteristic. Some police portrayals show the police as being just as corrupted or evil as the criminals they are supposed to be apprehending. This illustrate the mass media have an influence that goes far beyond their role in the entertainment industry. Police have been portrayed negatively in the media for quite some time and it seems to be getting worse. Music, social media, and even the news have a negative impact on the way police are being viewed. In fact, now anyone with a smart phone or other type of digital recording can capture police officers at their worse adding to the tainted image of our law enforcement agents. For instance, a Fort Worth police officer was videoed taped using pepper spray on a group of motorcyclists as they rode past him (Heinz Gordon, n.d.). Open angle is the most common. Even though there is no treatment yet for glaucoma, a person can manage it. To maintain continuous control of IOP, avoiding unhealthy peaks and valleys, it would be necessary to smoke a joint about every 1 to 2 hours. That s several thousand cigarettes a year (Scerra). • 15. Detrimental Effects of Open Access Policies Detrimental Effects of Open Access Policies In this paper, a bioeconomic model used by Barbier in two separate papers to explain the relationship between shrimp farming and destruction of mangroves in Thailand s coastal zone waters (Barbier, 2003) and the Laguna de Terminos in Mexico (Barbier and Strand, 1998) will be used to examine the detrimental effects of clam farming on the Venetian Lagoon ecosystem. Barbier (2003) uses an intertemporal model of an open access fishery to illustrate the changes in mangrove area (or in this case, area of healthy seafloor) on the carrying capacity of the stock and therefore on production, examining the relationship between the stock (S) and number of fishermen (L). This model operates under several assumptions. The first is that in order to incorporate a habitat fishery linkage in a bioeconomic fishery model, it must be assumed that the habitat s role in supporting the growth and maturation of species as a breeding ground and nursery has an effect on the carrying capacity and biological growth of the stock of the fish (Barbier, 2003). Using . Using M_(t ) to denote the area of healthy seafloor, any change in the stock can be illustrated as: (1) S_(t+1) S=F(S,M_t ) h(S,L). Therefore, net expansion of the stock occurs because of biological growth in the current period F(S,M_t), net of harvesting h(S,L), which is a function of the stock and effort. This relationship between the area of seafloor and biological growth is assumed to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are a few other people as well, but they are not worth noting. Jack is the CEO of Dryden Corporation and John is the CEO of Mega Corporation. John has been talking to Jack about the possibility of joining Mega Corporation s board of directors. Sam Bigger is the chairman and former CEO of Mega Corporation. They need an answer from Jack by the end of the month in order to get his name in for nomination. However, there are some issues that Jack wants to think through and discuss with his wife before making a decision. First, Jack is worried about the future of Dryden Corporation. Even though the company has grown and been successful for the past ten years, it has been rather stagnant lately. He isn t sure how to get it back on the right track. One option is an acquisition with Mega Corporation, which seems to always do well. Mega has acquired 20 companies and sold 10 of them. Numerous Successful attributes identified with the war were the Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Battle of Midway and The Battle of Coral Sea. The Pacific Campaign for the US was initiated after the bombing of Pearl Harbour which was done by the Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbour quickly aroused an isolated country without hesitation. Public opinion had been moving towards support for entering the war amid 1941, however extensive resistance stayed until the assault. Overnight, Americans joined the allies against Japan. American solidarity in the war exertion most likely made the unconditional surrender position later taken by the Allied Powers. • 19. Essay about Pet Health Insurance What is pet health insurance Pet health insurance is not very much like the health insurance that we are used to. For regular human health insurance, in many cases the person receiving the health care does not see the costs of their health care as the health care provider bills the insurance company directly. However, pet health insurance is different in that no pet health insurance provider in the United States pays the pet health care provider directly, instead you submit your claims to the insurer and you receive a reimbursement for expenses. Furthermore, pet health insurance is drastically cheaper than human health insurance as the upper end of veterinary costs, although rising, are significantly lower than that of human health ... Non pet owners, and maybe even many pet owners, do not realize it, but pet health care prices have been skyrocketing over the past few decades for many of the same reasons that human health care costs have been on the rise. Americans spent around $24 billion on health care for their pets in 2006, an amount nearly double what was spent in 1996(http://abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=7827666 page=1). • 21. Freshman School Experience Freshman year, the first year of high school. No one knows what s going to happen and who they are in this new environment. Are you nervous? Because I am. As I walked into school, the smell of perfume and cologne filled my nose. Having my binder squeezed to my chest, and the feeling of sweaty hands; I tried not to act nervous. I see a boy walk past me, his dark brown hair and tall figure lured me as I watched him pass without a glance in my direction. As I walked down the long freshman hall with checkered tiles and cream colored lockers, the eyes of my classmates turned in my direction. The feeling of anxiety fell over me. I quickly headed to my first class when the bell rang not wanting to be late. Seeing my friends made me more comfortable. The first several periods of the day passed in a blur, finally we reached the last period, band. I walked into this dark green room with dark gray carpets. As i scanned the room looking for someone I knew I realized that all I see are people sitting in chairs that weren t familiar to me. My best friend Kelsie was sitting with a tired looked in her eyes, so I walked over to the chair next to her. As I sat there hearing the new band teacher talk about what to expect, my eyes started to wander, and immediately stopped to see the dark haired boy sitting across from me on other side of the room. Our eyes met as he smiled, and I felt my cheeks getting hot so I looked away quickly. As we were listening I could see him from the corner of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Brief Note On Physician Assisted Suicide And Euthanasia Before I start, I want you all to know that this speech is meant to challenge your beliefs and show there are always two sides of the story. Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) is a very touchy subject; some people are passionately for it and some people are passionately against. Everyone has their own personal views or personal opinions but this is one of the situations where you would not know what you would do unless you were in that particular situation. Some people choose to die with dignity and would like to control how, where, or when they die. Some people would choose to avoid excruciating pain and not to have their loved ones see them suffer. Some people would choose to speed up the inevitable, avoid outrageous medical bills, and choose physician assisted suicide to die peacefully. Just imagine, you are a 44 year old married man with 2 young children and you were diagnosed with ALS and that your diagnosis is terminal. You were told that you would lose all muscle function, never will be able to hold your kids or your loving wife again, or enjoy life with your loved ones. You will first lose the use of your legs; you will not be able to walk anymore and you will have to use a wheelchair to move around. Next you will lose the use of your arms and no longer able to feed or dress yourself. The Arguments In The Downside Of Grit, By Alfie Kohn The idea of grit is to be used to help students improve on goals they ve made, but in the The Downside of Grit by Alfie Kohn he would argue that somethings are better left alone instead of trying to pursue them and achieving them with little success. Kohn claims that grit can be counterproductive because anyone could be continuing something that doesn t make them content with the outcome. He also discusses about how people with grit could experience issues with psychological health when you try over and over again and end up with continuous failure. It would be better to find an alternative pathway that would cause less stress, and end with success. Another argument that Kohn has is against the reliability of the research done on grit doesn t rely on evidence. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also approaches the idea of creating a learning environment that help students explore ideas. This would help students participate more in their education. Overall grit is used for students to develop long term goals (Para 25). Seemingly students should explore their interest instead of following through with a goal they might not enjoy. Kohn makes it clear that you shouldn t go through with a goal if it doesn t give you satisfaction. Kohn also states that the motives of your goal should come first before you take action. Kohn states that grit is applied more to students than adults for completing academic goals, but fails to mention how grit can be applied outside of school. Alfie Kohn explains that there is no point in continuing with a problem that has no solution, just like how you shouldn t continue with a goal that doesn t give you contentment. Children, specifically boys, were expected to be well schooled and regiments, physically and mentally. Cato was spoken to have been his son s reading teacher, tutor, and athletic trainer, forcing his son to fight and brave the extremes of nature (Plutarch 411). As Rome s military vigor was seen as important to the strength of the empire, Plutarch hints that it was crucial for children to be disciplined into great fighters. • 29. The Controversy Over Free Will And Determinism Introduction It has been debated over centuries whether us humans have control over our destiny, and if we are really able to decide on our own. The controversy between free will and determinism has been argued about for years. If we look into a dictionary, free will is define as the power given to human beings to be able to make free choices that is unconstrained by external circumstances or a force such as fate or divine intervention. Determinism is defined as a philosophical doctrine that every event, act, and decision is the inescapable consequence of antecedents that are independent of the human will. Determinism states that humans have no free will to choose what they wish. Due to this fact, contemporary philosophers cannot agree whether free will does exist, let alone it be a divine influence. Three major Beliefs There are three major arguments in the thought of free and they are libertarianism, compatibilism, and fatalism. There are both a religious and secular position for this argument. The religious aspect of free will is that it is an objective by God, while the secular position is subjective to causal determinism and the effect of the physical and concrete things on the process of decision making. In an article by Alvin Plantinga he tackled a few types of compatibilism, and he believes that he has found an objective to serve as a middle ground in the free will debate. Plantinga believes that God had already began the process, with an abrupt cause, and since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Lolita Innocence Essay advances. But by six she was wide awake, and by six fifteen we were technically lovers. I am going to tell you something very strange: it was she who seduced me. (Nabokov 132). However, this accusation against Lolita again proves Humbert to be unreliable and his need for control by blaming Lolita for her perilous magic of a nymphet. He also points out that he was not even Lolita s first sexual experience, ultimately, he justifies that he did not possess her sexual innocence. Although, he also reveals Lolita to appear physically inexperienced in which he says, she was not quite prepared for certain discrepancies between a kid s life and mine. (Nabokov 135). Humbert contradicts himself in his use of innocence in the way that Lolita has prior sexual experience, so therefore by his definition, she is no longer innocent; however, he indicates she remains innocent in respect to knowledge and naivety. Humbert alludes to his belief that Lolita is innocent due to her lack of knowledge and understanding during their first sexual encounter in which he suggests she seduced him, She saw the stark act merely as part of a youngster s furtive world, unknown to adults. What adults did for purposes of procreation was no business of hers. (Nabokov 133). Mental illnesses cause immense suffering and potentially even death; in the year 2000, the suicide rate of patients suffering from depression was estimated at fifteen percent. The origin of these skeptical and fearful preconceptions is the imperfect history of the practice. The most primitive forms of electroconvulsive therapy began in the 1930s, with the injection of various chemicals into mental health patients, inducing seizures. The first published reports of such treatments came from Ladislas Meduna, a Hungarian neuropsychiatrist whose experiments sparked the interest of clinicians worldwide (Fink, Electroconvulsive 1). The first account of actual electroconvulsive therapy was in 1938 in Italy; neurologist Ugo Cerletti, and his assistant Lucio Bini, applied electrodes on both temples of the patient, and passed electricity through the brain, causing the patient to have a seizure (Fink, Electroconvulsive 2). The earliest ECT procedures were administered without anesthesia or muscle relaxants, and the seizures it induced were brutal, often resulting in fractures and severe memory loss. However, the success of this experimentation outweighed the trepidation it created, and the use of ECT progressed, using Cerletti s studies as a foundation and orienting around the use of electric currents instead of chemicals. Despite its growing popularity and usage, through the 1950s, the procedure was administered recklessly, still lacking the use of anesthetics or muscle relaxants, and intensifying negative effects with implementation of a higher, more dangerous level of electrical current (Electroconvulsive Mayo 4 5).
