The document provides an analysis of the varying shots, editing, narration, and other elements used in an opening film sequence about American football. It notes that extreme close-ups build suspense, the narration works well with the editing, and reaction shots add humor. While many elements like the sun glint, font, establishing whistle, and use of the ball were effective, some areas could be improved such as reducing echo in the narration, adding more emotion to the narrator's voice, and incorporating additional diegetic sound.

Varying Shots & Editing Build Suspense in Football Opening
1. Varying Shots
• The shots throughout the whole sequence were
different as they consisted of match-on-action, close-
ups etc…
Opening extreme close-ups build suspense
• Using the American football players face at the
beginning of the sequence makes the audience want
to keep watching to know what happens to him
“Over and over again” is really funny
• It makes you feel really sorry for the player but at the
same time it makes you laugh at his misfortune
because it is such a terrible catch
2. Narration with editing worked really well
• Having the narration over the top of the editing made
it feel very open to interpretation and it made you feel
like you have a relationship with the character
Sense of character breaking fourth wall
• Using the character at the beginning and a voice-over
at the end made it seem personal and breaks the
fourth wall to the audience
Reaction shots were funny
• Using the two football players at the end looking up at
the sky to see where the ball is going is funny as you
can already tell it isn’t going to go well
3. Sun Glint off of the helmet worked well
• The shot of the sun glint made it have a good effect as
the light is obviously behind the camera and it made it
look bright but not un-focus the camera
The font worked well
• The colour fit with the comedy convention and them
being regular throughout the opening sequence kept
it within the realm rather than a music video
Some characters wearing different clothing
• It made them stand out more than the others so we
were focussed more on them as they were filmed in a
much more controlled way
4. Establishing Whistle
• The referee whistle at the beginning of the shot
was good because it set the scene well so we knew
it was going to be sport related before the footage
Good use of ball in the shots
• The way the ball was captured in the shots worked
really well and the shooting of the ball looked really
good as it didn’t disappear out of shot
Exciting
• The overall feel of the film was exciting as it made
you want to keep watching as it is quite adrenaline
filled throughout the montage
5. The voiceover was a little echoed
• The voiceover originally sounded like the character
was talking inside of a box and the background
noise could have been cut out
Narration sounds like he was just reading
• The narration didn’t contain that much emotion
and it could have made him sound more upset
about not being good at playing
Lacks some direction
• It worked really well with the different shots but
there could have been more set direction with what
the players were doing
6. Narration should have come in earlier
• The sound of the narration could have come in
earlier as it sounds like the music stops too early
before he says “wait”
• He also doesn’t say “wait” in a very enthusiastic
tone so this could be improved
More diegetic sound
• There could have been more diegetic sound
throughout the opening rather than just music
over the top as it could be seen as more of a
music video than an opening sequence to a film
