of new poets came into existence. These poets brought about new themes and perspectives that
manipulated the minds of humans all across the world. The poets that are in our study are Sylvia
Plath, Anne Sexton, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Robert Hayden. These four poets wrote detailed,
intricate poems that are packed full of a slew of different themes and perspectives. These themes

Her unique poem lays down a line of different instances of courage throughout, and describes
courage in a way never thought of before. Sexton elaborately states in lines 20 and 21 of her
poem, Your courage was a small coal that you kept swallowing. She s explaining in this quote
that courage has always been inside everyone, and when everyone is little, they bury it down
and don t let it breach the surface. However, as humans grow and experience, they become more
and more open, and courage begins to flow from the souls of everyone. Maya Karsh states in her

feared most of all the choices, that cried to be taken. Brooks is desperately trying to show her
readers that one shouldn t be afraid to make choices, or to explore, because exploration and more
importantly choices, are crucial to human survival. Without the ability to choose, humanity would

The loss of tradition is a sub theme in both short stories, A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner
and The Boat by Alistair Macleod. In the former, the loss of tradition is seen by Miss Emily
losing her way of life in the old South. In the latter, the boat is the tradition for the story. The

Consequently the mother is left with no boat to attend to, metaphorically, she is lost just as
tradition, and the boat is lost. Specifically, the daughters moving out and leaving the community is
a symbol of the loss of tradition in that women stay home and run the house as the men run their
boats. The women would have lunches ready for the men as they make their way down to the piers
and set out for a day of fishing. In winter, the boat would still pay a pivotal role in the community as
lobster traps are needed to be sown and mended. However, this tradition is lost since the daughters

Kublai Khan ruled the Mongol Empire for 34 years and founded the Yuan dynasty. He started a

An Intertextual Analysis
Tennyson is known for his word paintings the use of words that conjure pictures. Word paintings,
according to Benjamin are produced by the imagination and by certain tricks of light and colour
which produce the desired effect on the eye of the beholder (1931, p. 355). Stylistically, these word
paintings consist of metaphors and similes, and noun phrases that contain colour and sensory
adjectives and adverbs. Some examples from TLE (1969/1987, p. 469) that are instances of
figurative language include:
1.wavering lights, showery drops (noun phrases with adjectives)
2.dark faces, rosy flame (noun phrases with colour adjectives)
Although the painting by Duncanson shares some commonalities with the poem, it is different
in some ways. While highlighting these, I will provide pointers for further discussion on the
