Religious Reform in the Middle Ages
Religious Reformation in the Middle Ages Throughout the middle ages, religion underwent much
criticism and controversy. In a time where Catholicism reigned as the sole religion, ideas arose that
opposed this strict faith. These ideas spawned the Protestant reform and changed religion
throughout Europe. It not only changed religious practices and the path to God, but also initiated
political repercussions. These results were all in search of an answer to the question to which
everyone sought assurance: How do I know I am saved?
At the start of the sixteenth century, after years of living under strict Catholic rule, Christians began
to question their means to salvation. They had long been under the belief that the sacramental ...

Within the Catholic reform, a greater importance was also placed on literacy and education, so
much so that some Protestant reformers were willing to switch over . With all of these changes, one
could argue that the reform changed things for the better, strengthening societal values and
introducing leniency in religion. There were, however, many political implications as well.
Religion played a large role in the political welfare of Europe as well. Discontent united with
increasing national spirit spurred a desire for religious reform. The office of papacy in regards to
indulgences had intentions of charging people in Germany in order to finance a church in Rome.
Horrified, Luther sought help from German princes, dukes and local leaders. They were all too
happy to help, for they would benefit from saving money involved with inflation, confiscating
wealthy Catholic property, as well as increasing German nationalism as separate from Church. The
reform and Luther s ideas were backed strongly by the peasants, who violently rallied, resulting in
the gruesome Peasants war. This only strengthened the reformation s backing by German princes. In
England, King Henry used religion for his own personal gain in legitimizing the birth of his child to
Anne Boleyn. After Parliament passed an Act of Supremacy that declared the king the head of the
Church of England, it separated the

Social Connectivity And Its Effects On Society
Imagine if everything in the world around you existed only in theory but didn t really exist at all.
How much would you have to worry about the consequences of your actions? This kind of nihilism
isn t practical when you go out in public, but computation and social connectivity may be the
closest thing, in the real world, to the construction of an actual nihilistic landscape. When you go
online, you often won t have to worry about tarnishing your identity and reputation because, with
anonymity, it never really existed to your audience in the first place. There are many places where
you don t have to worry about saying the wrong things because there aren t any authority figures to
effectively enforce them. The internetdoesn t so much... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here you have two major American political candidates from both the Democratic and Republican
parties emphasizing the need for authority and moderation for the dangerous aspects of the World
Wide Web. In one sense, it s easy for people to mock just how vague, naГЇve, and impractical this
idea sounds, as shutting something down online doesn t necessarily prevent it from being built up
again. In another sense, it s long overdue for politicians to start taking the issue of toxicity in
global internet activity and reactivity very seriously. This issue is not so much about terrorism
itself. Fundamentally speaking, it is about the downsides of the internet s global reach and the
lack of exclusivity that dangerous ideas have because of social media s accessibility. In can be
argued by the social contract theory that people, in general, will submit to their governments
under a common law to live in a civil society. In other words, the authority of the law, and its
ability to dish out consequences for actions, is what can ensure communal peace and security
among people. But legislation has a notorious lag time in its ability to properly keep up with
technology and its sociological uses. There arguably isn t a clearly defined social contract on the
internet. Overall, this is an issue about how internet rhetoric seems to be fueling a contagious toxic
culture,

Explain The Panopticon By Michel Foucault
According to Michel Foucault, power is knowledge and knowledge is power. He also believed that
as individuals, everyone will react to situations in different ways. Foucault said that power reaches
into the very grain of individuals, touches their bodies and inserts itself into their actions and
attitudes, their discourses, learning processes and everyday lives. 1 Foucault believed that
knowledgeis always a form of power, but he took it a step further and told us that knowledge can be
gained from power. Through observation, new knowledge is produced. Foucault presents these
thoughts in the following manner.
Knowledge linked to power, not only assumes the authority of the truth but has the power to make
itself true. All knowledge, once applied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This building allowed the guard, who was usually located in the center tower, to monitor every
prisoner while no prisoner could see the guard. This created an illusion of being monitored even
when the guard was not looking at a particular inmate. This constant observation acted as a control
mechanism; a consciousness of constant surveillance is internalized. According to us, the
documentation of Sijil was similar to a Panopticon prison. It gave the Ottoman state, an ability to
constantly monitor every subject by recording them into Sijils. The documentation of its subjects
and the territorialisation of Sharia law can be considered as the process of govenrmentality (2nd
point above) in Ottoman empire. By documenting the different parameters of its subject, the state
always knew how, what and when to exercise its power. This How What When represents the
knowledge which is required to yield power and power again gives them the ability to further
observe them and these new observations lead to new knowledge and news ways of exercising
power. Thus it becomes a vicious

How Did Women Dominate The Post Office
The inner workings of the post office enabled the postal service to have a wider communication
system. Strangers were allowed to communicate with each other easily by going to the post office
in their small towns and urban cities, able to contact the outside world. Going to the post office was
something that only men had done when the postal system had been an integral and fast system of
communication for the first time in American history. It also was a place of secrecy where
unexpected encounters might have occurred. It lead the public to fear over their privacy. Women
were more prominent to be uncomfortable by the masculinity that dominated the post office which
meant the women had a difficult time sending letters to a loved

Social Dominance Theory
A major point of social dominance theory is that all humans belong to various groups. There are
powerful groups that provide status and authority and there are powerless groups as children that
are easy targets of violence. Some adults sexually abuse a child to feel the power and control they
don t feel in their relationships with other adults. Sometimes, adults who have intimate sexual
relationships with other adults may sexually abuse children in moments of unusual stress. Other
adults are primarily sexually attracted to children and act impulsively when presented with an
unexpected opportunity to sexually abuse a child. Each person who sexually abuses a child is
motivated by issues unique to that individual. Some adults who sexually abuse children recognize
that it is wrong and are deeply repentant. Other adults believe their behavior is okay and that what
they do shows their love for children. b.Psychological Explanation:... Show more content on

There is no single profile that accurately describes or accounts for all child molesters. There are
many variables among individuals in terms of their personal characteristics, life experiences,
criminal histories, and reasons for committing such offenses. One common misconception is that
molested children grow up to become child molesters themselves. Most adults who sexually use
or abuse children were, during their own childhoods, abandoned, abused sexually, physically, and
/or emotionally. In reaction to those experiences of abuse, neglect, betrayal and powerlessness,
they may have attempted to find feelings of power and control over others including sexual power
over children. Some people who sexually use or abuse children have high social status in a group

Occupational Therapy Theory Essay
Introduction
Theory has been described as a set of ideas that help us to better understand and explain the
concepts behind different behaviours (Tufan Cole, 2008). As described by Duncan (2009), theories
are different ideas that are linked and form the basis for action. (Duncan A.S, E, 2009). In
occupational therapy, theories work alongside conceptual models and frames of reference to guide
therapists in using the most suitable assessment or therapy for their client (Joosten, V.A, 2015).
This essay will discuss the reason theory is used in occupational therapy and how it is implemented
in the OT process.
Purpose of Theory
Theory guides actions and helps therapists carry out their job better (Turpin Iwama, 2011). Theory
provides occupational therapists with the basis of knowledge for what they practice (Duncan, A.S.,
E, 2009). To be able to carry out effective and correct interventions with their clients, occupational
therapists must have to have something to refer to, to ensure what they do is credible and focused
on the occupation (Turpin Iwama 2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is done through following the occupational therapy process which is influenced by conceptual
models. Examples of these models are the Model of Human Occupation (Kielhofner, G, 2008),
Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (Polatajko, Townsend Craik, 2007)
and PEO. These models influence the occupational therapy practice. Conceptual models are an
important aspect of OT theory as they try to understand how the person, environment and the
occupation are linked (Tufano Cole, 2008). Also mentioned by Tufano Cole (2008), is the idea that
the model chosen by the occupational therapist highlights the therapist s outlook on a patient s
ability to engage in their daily occupations (Tufano Cole,

Two Points Of View Stories
Two Points of View Stories Liddy Newnam Every year I anticipate our vacation to visit the
Quartapella s beach house. Bouncing in my seat, we ride the ferry taking us out to Bald Head
Island. Michael and Nicholas faces show as we approach the shore. Their arms wave wildly,
their hands flapping in the air. Every year, since we moved from Charlotte to DC, we visit them.
My sister Anna is two years older than me and went to play group with Mike and Nick., For me
it s a little tough fitting in with the older kids. For me to truly participate in the games, I have to
push a little harder to be accepted. Most years we do the same activities, the games only differ a

It may seem odd, but we spend a lot of time in our bedroom. When you walk into that room, there
are two sets of bunk beds, and clothes cover the floor. Anna and Michael always claim the top
bunks, and Nick and I each have a bottom. Almost immediately after we arrive, Michael suggests
his favorite game. This consists of hitting Nick with ugly dolls by throwing them at the fan, and
having them fly off and hit him. This game quickly evolves into a violent dodgeball game with
stuffed animals that can only be compared to the Hunger Games. Commonly I don t want to
participate in the reckless games that we normally do, because I am younger and as a result I
become injured quite a bit. I don t admit this to the older kids because all I want to do is play
with my best friends. The game tends to come to a close when someone falls off the top bunk,
which apparently, this time, was Nick. When we aren t wrecking the house, we go outside. Racing
across the sand, we plummet into the water, the splash wars have begun. Next to come, sandcastle
building and, what seems like endless laughter. Then, we come home, sand filling our swimsuits
and sheeted to our skin, to rinse off in the outdoor shower. I pull the handle out

Thesis Statement For Old Spice
Arevalo 1 Annalyn Arevalo
Nicole Vandever
English 101
12 October 2017
Outline
I. Introduction
A. Thesis:
1. The highly popular Old Spice commercials addresses a number of issues related to the
construction of masculinities in contemporary American culture. In the 2012 Smell is Power Old
Spice commercial, it offers great insight into cultural ideas related to the construction of hegemonic
masculinity and implies the masculinity constructed through the protagonist s, Terry Crews,
appearance and body, sexuality, behavior, and his character pattern and mannerisms.
II. Body
A. Hegemonic Masculinity
1a. Assertion: The male protagonist, Terry Crews, is shown to be aggressive, dominant,
heterosexual, and competitive.
2a. eXample: In her article, Boys Will Be Boys: The Male Image In Old Spice Advertising,
Katherine Krauss says, Advertisements directed toward male consumers suggested that the
qualities of the products would reflect the qualities of the owner, the qualities of a real man. The
traditional image of masculinity was, and still is, defined by characteristics such as heterosexual,
competitive, individualistic, aggressive, strong, successful, capable, and authoritative. The ideal
man is financially responsible, outdoorsy, athletic, and completely undomesticated (8).
3a. Explanation: Krauss concludes that in contemporary society, men buy products that support
their public image of a man, and that in order to be conceived as a real man, a

should look at the shapes carefully and according the sides you must put in one circle. For
example, in circle 1 we have all shape with 4 sides that we call quadrilateral.
When they were doing the activity I was watching them how to do the activity. Sometimes I asked
them some questions to make sure that they understood completely. I observed all pupils in my
group loved to play with the colourful shapes and they separated them in the right circle. This
activity was very simple but through that the pupils can recognise the all type of shapes. When we
finished Miss B suggested each group should check other group work and they should find if there
is any mistake. While my group were checking other groups work I was with them and supported
them with explaining more.
That was one of our learning activity for numeracy skills and I think I was be able to support them

The University Of Southern Mississippi
Please accept this personal statement as a part of my application for the doctoral program in
criminal justice starting the fall semester of 2016. The University of Southern Mississippi is my
ideal location for the achievement of a doctoral degree. I would like to demonstrate my knowledge,
experience, and research ability in the field of criminal justiceand correctional studies. Having
majored in the discipline as a former graduate student, I want to further my education to assist and
promote future changes in criminal justice and correctional policy. I am looking forward to the
opportunities your program has to offer and I believe my background and perspective in criminal
justice will help enrich the program, as well.
A wide range of diversity in the field of criminal justice studies is of great importance. As a
second year graduate student, I was given an opportunity to work closely with U.S Probation and
Pretrial Services as an intern. This internship allowed me to further my knowledge in correctional
studies and provided the necessary resources to complete my master s thesis. I was also exposed
to various policies and procedures pertaining to probation practices while gaining a vast amount of
knowledge assisting with investigations, liaisons between state and local agencies, and the
intricacies of offender case management. Furthermore, I was able to form close relationships with
employees of the agency who have assisted in my current career endeavors.

The Detrimental Effects of Soda
What is your favorite soda? Coke? Do you know what is in soda? Cutting down on soda can lead to
a healthy and better lifestyle. Studies show that soda, though it tastes good, has many negative
effects that outweigh the positive effects. Soda, especially diet, is detrimental to the health of your
body.
My cousin s teacher did an experiment with coke. She put a tooth in coke and left it for at least a
week. The next time they checked the tooth had disintegrated. The coke had eaten away at the

Coke s new C2 and Pepsi Edge hope to solve this problem without compromising taste but there
are still many other ingredients in C2 and Edge that can lead to obesity. Tooth Decay is another
problem affecting the US. Both sugar and phosphoric acid from sodas contribute to it and the soft
drink industry admits to it. But the NSDA (National Soft Drink Association) also says that soft
drinks aren t the sole cause of tooth decay.
A lot of sugary foods, from fruit juices to candy and even raisins and other dried fruit, have what
dentists refer to as cariogenic properties, which means they can cause tooth decay. Though other
foods have cariogenic properties soda definitely has the largest percentage of these properties.
A federally funded study of nearly 3,200 Americans 9 to 29 years old conducted between 1971
and 1974 showed a direct link between tooth decay and soft drinks. Numerous other studies have
shown the same link throughout the world, from Sweden to Iraq. Soda has become the number
one choice beverage in the US. The younger you start drinking soda daily the more likely you are
going to develop osteoporosis, tooth decay, and a myriad of other ailments when older. Soda is

An Analysis Of Susan Glaspell s Trifles
A Love Gone Bad A woman who was once full of life and happiness is now left with no joy in her
life. In the play, Trifles by Susan Glaspell, we see how Mrs. Wright has changed over the years.
We see how cheerful she was before marrying Mr. Wright. While trying to solve the murder, the
author uses symbolism, conflict, and irony. The are many examples of conflict in this play. The
most apparent conflict is that between the men and the women in the play. In the first parts of the
investigation, the sheriff is already showing his feelings towards women. Well, can you beat the
woman! Held for murder and worryin about her preserves (Glaspell). To Mr. Peters, the concerns
of women mean nothing. Even Mr. Hale s view of the women is crude. Well, women are used to
worrying over trifles(Glaspell). Mr. Hale even thinks that what the women are worried about isn
t important. The county attorney is also in conflict with the ladies in the story. Mr. Henderson
can t even dry his hands without finding some excuse to talk bad about Mrs. Wright. Dirty
towels (Glaspell). Not much of a housekeeper, would you say ladies (Glaspell). In the eyes of
Mr. Henderson, the women are nothing more than housekeepers. Mrs. Hale doesn t see things
the way the men do. There s a great deal of work to be done on a farm (Glaspell). She wasn t only

The Importance Of The Gilded Age In The Gilded Age
The Importance of Frances Willard Throughout the course of the Gilded Age, several influential
figures rose impacting the economy, political factors, and culture of the United States. One of the
most important figures of this time period was Frances Willard, born in New York in 1839. She
held several important positions, exceeding as an educator, a women s suffragist, and a co founder
of the Woman s Christian Temperance Union. The fact that Frances Willard held these positions
indicates that she contributed to the improvement of the United States, specifically by educating
Women, fighting for Women s rights, and fighting for prohibition. These key roles were
complementary to the issues associated with the United States at the time. For example, a
significantly low percentage of the population attended college after completing high school. Most
of the people that attended college at the time were men. Women were typically held to Victorian
standards by society s expectation of them to stay home to raise children, making it uncommon for
them to attend college. In terms of alcohol, Christian churches completely disagreed with and
despised the consumption of liquor, leading to the establishment of temperance reform. Frances
Willard was the most influential figure of the Gilded Age because of her work through the Woman s
Christian Temperance Union that contributed towards the ratification of the 18th and 19th
amendment, prohibiting the consumption or production of alcohol and

Creating A Planner
Whether it s through memory loss, aging or sheer forgetfulness, it can be hard to remember your
life s To Do list. Life can be so stressful at times that you might want to forget what you need to
do. However, if you create a planner, you ll simultaneously free your mind to focus on task
completion instead. To create a planner you ll actually use, consider these three tactics.
1. Take a look at your goals.
Write down all the things you d like to accomplish this year. Whether the goal involves losing
weight, saving money or going on a vacation, write it down. In order to succeed with a goal, you
ve got to break it down into bite size chunks. When you break the big goal down and create a plan,
you re more likely to accomplish it. For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you have a family, they probably have their own schedules as well. It s not fun when you
realized you ve forgotten something important to attend or do. When you keep a planner, you ll
have a better chance of remembering important dates and tasks. Look at your planner as your
personal assistant. Just before you head to bed each night, pull out the planner and take a look at
what you have scheduled for the following day. If there are any additions, you ll want to write
them down at this time. This one habit can really help you center your mind and mentally prepare
yourself for what the day has to offer. A planner also takes the guesswork out of the equation. By
maintaining a planner, you ll know what s next.
3. Use visual cues.
If you love colorful stickers or brightly colored pens, use them in your planner. Visual stimulation
can really motivate you to look and see what s going on in your planner. If you love motivational
quotes, try to find a planner that has a few already etched in. It s all about incorporating the things
you love so you can accomplish the things you ve set out to do.
Overall, having a system to keep you organized is always beneficial in more ways than one. A
planner is merely the best tool to keep everything in one place. After using this tool for a few

Religion In Japan
Our group separated the research on Japan into sections of history, current Religious Education
(RE) in schools, demographics, and government/current policies. There were two main religions
that surrounded Japan: Shinto and Buddhism. In addition, two other religions, Confucianism and
Christianity, also contributed a considerate amount to the RE in Japan. The four major time periods
involving RE in the history of Japanwere Pre Meiji, Meiji Restoration Period, wartime era, and post
WWII (Inoue 115). There were religious tensions during the Tokugawa shogunate era that which

Shinto is the belief of kami, spirits, deities that exist as things in nature, such as trees or streams,
watching over the humans on Earth. To the Japanese, Shinto was not particularly a religion but
something that is part of their lives, like another part of the natural world, albeit a part of enormous
power (BBC: History 1). So, in a sense, religion actually came into Japan in the 6th century, when
Buddhism, founded by Prince Shotoku (571 622), was transmitted to Japan from China (Web Japan
2). After the birth of Buddhism into Japan, Shinto faiths and traditions took on Buddhist elements,
and later, Confucian ones (BBC: History 1). The Emperor Shomu (701 756) adopted Buddhism as
the official state religion and build a huge statute of Buddha to commemorate this occasion. Even
still, the coexistence of Buddhism and Shinto continued (Web Japan 2). Since Buddhism and Shinto
were the main beliefs in Japan, during the time in the 16th century, religious tensions with
Christianity grew when Christian missionaries tried to convert many of the Japanese (BBC:
History 2). Due to such actions of forced conversions, Christianity was seen as a threat in Japan
and in which made Buddhism and Shinto the dominant religions in the 17th century partly because
an anti Christian measure forced every Japanese person to register at a Buddhist temple and to pay
for the privilege of being a Buddhist (BBC: History

Colonoscopy Essay
In the course of recent years we have made incredible advances in the analysis of colon and

Alcohol Related Accidents
Someone in America dies every twenty two minutes, because of an alcohol related accident. Most
people feel that they will never be part of this statistic, but experts on this subject say that everyone
has a forty percent chance of being in an accident with a drunk driver. Drunk driving is a serious
problem that the United States, as well as the world, is trying to deal with, because it does not only

Even if the person appears to be fine and there is no one to drive their car, call a taxi. The amount
of money that it costs does not even compare to how priceless a life is. Many little things come
into affect when you are socially drinking and it is better to be safe then sorry. Children always
are afraid that their parents will be upset with them if they are intoxicated. One hundred percent
of parents would rather have their kids home alive and drunk, then get in a car with a drunk
driver and run the risk of death. Driving drunk impairs everyone and no one is immune to it.
Driving an automobile while under the influence of alcohol is one of the most dangerous things
a person could do. This is because they are not only dangering themselves, but the other drivers

harsh battle to stop people from drinking and driving. The best way to stop this horrible epidemic
is to make people aware and to educate them. These two groups as well as many others are trying
to do so. They promote parties on weekends for kids to go to, just so they are not in danger of

The beginning of economic hardship started after World War I, Kaiser William I, the German ruler
fled to Holland. In his place was the democracy of Germany, they were known as the Weimar
Republic. The Weimar Republic was blamed for the failure of World War 1, due to signing the
Treaty of Versailleson the 29th of June 1919 (BBC, 2014). This led to the Great Depression.
Prior to the Great Depression Germany was doing well, it was the most powerful industry. This is
the main reason for the anger and hatred within the German society, they were use to power and a
stable economy. The German economy relied heavily on America, without this it caused a mass of
unemployment and 744 banks failed (livinghistoryfarm, 2003). This led to poverty within
Germany with the unemployed increased to six million (Mason, J., 2003). This had an impact on
different groups within society. Children feared of leaving school unemployed with no jobs, while
anxiety and embitterment grew in the minds of the Germans (Swinton, J., 1995). Farmers were
also greatly impacted, they were unable to sell or produce stock which meant no money or food in
Germany. The Great Depression impacted Germany politely and socially, many were upset about

Josh Sweeney Brings Sled Hockey to Portland
Sled hockey was invented in the early 1960s at the Stockholm rehabilitation center. A group of
Swedes wanted to continue to play hockey despite their disability. The game follows the ice
hockey rules with a few exceptions. The players sit on specially designed sleds that have two
hockey blades under them. Furthermore, each player uses two specially designed sticks with
metal pick on the ends. This helps the person propel themselves across the ice. Finally, the goalie
uses specially designed gloves with metal picks sewn to the back of each glove. This helps the
goalie to maneuver during the game. http://www.usahockey.com/sledhockey

My Experience At A Children s Camp
The past few days of observation are based upon my final week as a coordinator for a children s
camp. Including my interactions with people as our programs are winding down and the
unexpected realities of what was going on outside of the camp. In this week I experienced; upward
social comparison, availability heuristic, mortality salience and social cognition.
Upward social comparison I participated in a panel discussing the benefits of advanced
placement classes. In my discussion of my personal experiences, I talked about comparing
myself to my more intelligent classmates. In high school I felt like I was not as mart as my
classmates. I discussed how it made me work harder, I wanted to be at what I perceived was a
higher level. The example in the book mentioned studies of people using upward social
comparison to motivate themselves to success (pg. 86). As mentioned by the text upwards
social comparison can be a positive tool for motivation. The textbook also spoke about the
dangers of comparing yourself with others if a person does not believe they can reach what they
are aspiring to be. I recognize what the danger in upward social comparison could be, it would be
hard to process failure if you lived your entire life comparing yourself to others. I do not know if I
thought I could reach what I was comparing myself to, but I believe I benefited from the push.
Eventually, I no longer relied the comparison.

2.2 Strategic Transformation
The S curve (Figure 3), allows businesses to predict the rise and fall of new product life cycles
within their market or industry. Whilst the airline industry in itself is in the maturity stage, the
low fare segment is currently in the growth stage. Gaining in popularity over the past few years,
the low fare segment is slowly reaching out to the masses and shedding its traditional negative
impression of compromising on safety and service quality. A growing middle class in the region,
with increased standards of living and disposable income and an appetite for travel combined with
increasing fuel prices and resultant ticket prices by traditional carriers have led to growing

Example Of Political Cartoon
In his 1988 Supreme Court opinion in Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, the late Chief Justice
Rehnquist argued, the art of the cartoonist is often not reasoned or evenhanded, but slashing and
one sided...the political cartoon is a weapon of attack, of scorn and ridicule and satire...it is
usually as welcome as a bee sting . Despite these biting words, the Court ruled that political
cartoons are essential tools in a democracy. Political cartoons are inherently controversial, as they
seek to mock both the legal and governmental process. However, they are also inherently
American, as they reflect the core tenets of the First Amendment, the right to free speech, and
expression. In this paper, I will analyze a political cartoon, created by the artist Paul Conrad in
1972 for the Los Angeles Times. I will first provide a description of the cartoon, its relevance at the
time, and the political salience that it still maintains today. Secondly, I will examine this cartoon
through five intersecting lens: the efficacy of visual rhetoric/graphic discourse, materiality,
technology/modernity, power, and institutional/male domination. Through these lenses, I will trace
my object s physical and ideological genealogy, and examine its social, political, and historical
significance in contemporary culture. This object came to the archive in a collection of political
cartoons and was clipped from the Los Angeles Times. The collector probably saved a series of Los
Angeles Times political cartoons,

Nostalgic Memories In Yusef Komunyakaa s Facing It Essay
Nostalgic Memories In Facing It Just as farmers brand their livestock in order to claim them as
their own, humans do the same when it comes to important events. There are certain moments in
one s life when an incident is so powerful, emotionally or physically, that it leaves a mark on a
person forever. The branded symbol that is left could be positive or negative, but there is no
doubt that it has caused a wave of all encompassing feeling. And although when looking back at

these rare occurrences when a certain event can be so distinct that it is like experiencing it once

His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction
of the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something
that one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time,
in a way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one
has more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents
emotion through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force,
which expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content
and theme of the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I
see a booby trap s white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me В… he s lost his right arm
. Literary devices such as this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary
and depressing image of a past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that
Komunyakaa wants certain words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one
to concentrate on certain thoughts: I turn that wayВ—I m inside causes one to imagine that the
main character is deep inside his train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious
that the literal meaning of the phrase is that the character is

Unlike any other form of literature or entertainment, Fairy Tales help children to discover their

The Ball was for the prince to find a bride, and although Cinderella begged her stepmother to let
her go, she wasn t allowed. Bettelheim must agree with all this adversity that Cinderella is

had picked them up, she could go. Even though the Birds came and picked up the food,
Cinderella s stepmother still said no. Her stepmother s reasoning for not letting her go was that
she had no clothes and that could not dance. It s hard not to see how hard Cinderella is trying to
lead a good life, although she faces so much adversity. Bettelheim might also agree.
As the old saying goes The good guy always wins ; Cinderella ends up going to the prince s ball

and she would disappear. However, on the third day the prince caught Cinderella s shoe by

Essay on Horror Films
Horror films
Movies have been growing increasingly more explicit for years. Horror films are no longer based
on a cleverly written script with lots of twists and turns, but rather how graphic and twisted the
images are throughout the movie. Horror films are appealing to viewers for various reasons. In

McCutcheon in Too Disturbing, Too Shocking, According to Olson, people particularly enjoy

Stanley J. Solomon in The Nightmare World claims If the depiction of archetypal fears is one

The Importance Of Assistive Technology
Over the last decade technology has become such an important aspect in life. The push towards
having technology in your hands at all times has made its way into the classroom also. This
clearly started with the use of a computer and being able to find what you want quickly instead of
having to go through a very large library to find one important sentence to use for your essay.
Laptops, tablets, smart devices, projectors, and many more devices biggest advancement helping
students in the classroom because of what it is capable of doing. Most mainstream students are
now being provided with these sorts of devices to use during and even to take home. These
improvements of technologyare not only helping mainstream students in the classroom but... Show

Because of this increase of these type of students, this specific technology can be such a great
thing for these students. With these numbers growing so quickly there has to be a way to help all
of these students learn quickly and lots even though their disability gives them trouble doing this.
With the numbers of children with disabilities means more kinds of disabilities so he assistive
technology is also made for the different types.. Lots of different softwares that can help deaf,
mute, physical disabilities, and even specific ones like autism or down syndrome. Word prediction
software is something that can be easily put on computers to help students reduce the number of
keystrokes that are required to type words and provides assistance with spelling for students of
various ability levels (Hasselbring 107). This incredible software gives these students the chance to
do written documents. These students will try not to use large words and to think create because
they do not want to get upset about what the can not do. The software uses their words to create
their vocabulary instead of them using the easiest kind of words to write. It s such an amazing use
of technology because it makes the student with the disability be able to do the same thing a
mainstream student does. Most mainstream students are able to easily communicate with teachers
and other classmates but special needs have trouble doing this. With these technologies it helps

Gender Deviance In Sweetheart Of The Song Tra Bong
Does deviating from one s gender norms inevitably doom one down a spiral of moral
corruption? Tim O Brien, author of Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong and Ernest Hemingway,
author of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , certainly seem to hold this view, as
evident by the fates of the major female characters in their respective works. The deviance of the
major female characters in both works appears to corrupt not only themselves, but also pollute
their partners, causing them to suffer injury or harm as a result. The degree of injury ranges from
negligible, like Fossie s demotion and broken heart, to fatal, like the bullet that rips through
Macomber s skull. It begs the question, are these stories meant to serve as cautionary tales for their
female readers, or possibly for their husbands, so they may recognize genderdeviance and stop it in
its tracks before their wives transform into Margot Macomber or Mary Anne Bell? This essay will
analyze what such characters say about pervading views of women, both in society and in literature.
At the end of Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong , Mark Fossie gazes upon his previously demure
and sweet girlfriend as a demon, surrounded by carnage, a necklace of shriveled human tongues
around her neck as she stands barefoot in the hootch of the Green Berets. The male reader is
meant to resonate with Mark s horror and be terrified of Mary Anne s feral transformation. The
pure, sweet, socially conforming to be wife has been corrupted by

The Kneeling Protest
Is the Kneeling Protest Needed or Disrespectful Professional athletes protesting the National
Anthem has sparked controversy among American citizens causing a massive debate as to whether
or not this protest is a disrespectful protest or a protest that is greatly needed in America. In my
eyes, NFL players protesting the National Anthem is needed as the unity and equality that the
National Anthem stands for is nonexistent. I stand with the NFL players protesting the National
Anthem and I will tell you why. Colin Kaepernick, the NFL player who started to kneel, is
protesting the National Anthem because he believes that the police brutalityhere in America is
unconstitutional and I agree with him. Police officers are brutally murdering unarmed African
Americans without due process. These police officers aren t providing these now dead men and
women any chance to prove themselves innocent in a court. Amendment 14 which states Equal
protection under the law is being completely violated by police officers yet no one is doing
anything to stop them. Between 2005 to April 2017, CNN states that only 80 officers were
convicted for murder or manslaughter, yet an estimated amount of 1000 police shootings occur
yearly here in the United States. This means for every 150 police shootings, 1 police officerwas
convicted of murder. The 150 to 1 ratio is just way too high and calls for a change. Chris Rock, an
African American comedian, was stopped 3 times in the span of 7 weeks by the

  • 2. Religious Reform in the Middle Ages Religious Reformation in the Middle Ages Throughout the middle ages, religion underwent much criticism and controversy. In a time where Catholicism reigned as the sole religion, ideas arose that opposed this strict faith. These ideas spawned the Protestant reform and changed religion throughout Europe. It not only changed religious practices and the path to God, but also initiated political repercussions. These results were all in search of an answer to the question to which everyone sought assurance: How do I know I am saved? At the start of the sixteenth century, after years of living under strict Catholic rule, Christians began to question their means to salvation. They had long been under the belief that the sacramental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the Catholic reform, a greater importance was also placed on literacy and education, so much so that some Protestant reformers were willing to switch over . With all of these changes, one could argue that the reform changed things for the better, strengthening societal values and introducing leniency in religion. There were, however, many political implications as well. Religion played a large role in the political welfare of Europe as well. Discontent united with increasing national spirit spurred a desire for religious reform. The office of papacy in regards to indulgences had intentions of charging people in Germany in order to finance a church in Rome. Horrified, Luther sought help from German princes, dukes and local leaders. They were all too happy to help, for they would benefit from saving money involved with inflation, confiscating wealthy Catholic property, as well as increasing German nationalism as separate from Church. The reform and Luther s ideas were backed strongly by the peasants, who violently rallied, resulting in the gruesome Peasants war. This only strengthened the reformation s backing by German princes. In England, King Henry used religion for his own personal gain in legitimizing the birth of his child to Anne Boleyn. After Parliament passed an Act of Supremacy that declared the king the head of the Church of England, it separated the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Social Connectivity And Its Effects On Society Imagine if everything in the world around you existed only in theory but didn t really exist at all. How much would you have to worry about the consequences of your actions? This kind of nihilism isn t practical when you go out in public, but computation and social connectivity may be the closest thing, in the real world, to the construction of an actual nihilistic landscape. When you go online, you often won t have to worry about tarnishing your identity and reputation because, with anonymity, it never really existed to your audience in the first place. There are many places where you don t have to worry about saying the wrong things because there aren t any authority figures to effectively enforce them. The internetdoesn t so much... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here you have two major American political candidates from both the Democratic and Republican parties emphasizing the need for authority and moderation for the dangerous aspects of the World Wide Web. In one sense, it s easy for people to mock just how vague, naГЇve, and impractical this idea sounds, as shutting something down online doesn t necessarily prevent it from being built up again. In another sense, it s long overdue for politicians to start taking the issue of toxicity in global internet activity and reactivity very seriously. This issue is not so much about terrorism itself. Fundamentally speaking, it is about the downsides of the internet s global reach and the lack of exclusivity that dangerous ideas have because of social media s accessibility. In can be argued by the social contract theory that people, in general, will submit to their governments under a common law to live in a civil society. In other words, the authority of the law, and its ability to dish out consequences for actions, is what can ensure communal peace and security among people. • 4. Explain The Panopticon By Michel Foucault According to Michel Foucault, power is knowledge and knowledge is power. He also believed that as individuals, everyone will react to situations in different ways. Foucault said that power reaches into the very grain of individuals, touches their bodies and inserts itself into their actions and attitudes, their discourses, learning processes and everyday lives. 1 Foucault believed that knowledgeis always a form of power, but he took it a step further and told us that knowledge can be gained from power. Through observation, new knowledge is produced. Foucault presents these thoughts in the following manner. • 6. Social Dominance Theory A major point of social dominance theory is that all humans belong to various groups. There are powerful groups that provide status and authority and there are powerless groups as children that are easy targets of violence. Some adults sexually abuse a child to feel the power and control they don t feel in their relationships with other adults. Sometimes, adults who have intimate sexual relationships with other adults may sexually abuse children in moments of unusual stress. Other adults are primarily sexually attracted to children and act impulsively when presented with an unexpected opportunity to sexually abuse a child. • 7. Occupational Therapy Theory Essay Introduction Theory has been described as a set of ideas that help us to better understand and explain the concepts behind different behaviours (Tufan Cole, 2008). As described by Duncan (2009), theories are different ideas that are linked and form the basis for action. (Duncan A.S, E, 2009). In occupational therapy, theories work alongside conceptual models and frames of reference to guide therapists in using the most suitable assessment or therapy for their client (Joosten, V.A, 2015). This essay will discuss the reason theory is used in occupational therapy and how it is implemented in the OT process. Purpose of Theory Theory guides actions and helps therapists carry out their job better (Turpin Iwama, 2011). Theory provides occupational therapists with the basis of knowledge for what they practice (Duncan, A.S., E, 2009). Upward social comparison I participated in a panel discussing the benefits of advanced placement classes. In my discussion of my personal experiences, I talked about comparing myself to my more intelligent classmates. In high school I felt like I was not as mart as my classmates. I discussed how it made me work harder, I wanted to be at what I perceived was a higher level. The example in the book mentioned studies of people using upward social comparison to motivate themselves to success (pg. 86). As mentioned by the text upwards social comparison can be a positive tool for motivation. The textbook also spoke about the dangers of comparing yourself with others if a person does not believe they can reach what they are aspiring to be. I recognize what the danger in upward social comparison could be, it would be hard to process failure if you lived your entire life comparing yourself to others. Despite these biting words, the Court ruled that political cartoons are essential tools in a democracy. Political cartoons are inherently controversial, as they seek to mock both the legal and governmental process. However, they are also inherently American, as they reflect the core tenets of the First Amendment, the right to free speech, and expression. In this paper, I will analyze a political cartoon, created by the artist Paul Conrad in 1972 for the Los Angeles Times. I will first provide a description of the cartoon, its relevance at the time, and the political salience that it still maintains today. Secondly, I will examine this cartoon through five intersecting lens: the efficacy of visual rhetoric/graphic discourse, materiality, technology/modernity, power, and institutional/male domination. Through these lenses, I will trace my object s physical and ideological genealogy, and examine its social, political, and historical significance in contemporary culture. His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction of the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something that one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time, in a way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one has more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents emotion through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force, which expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content and theme of the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I see a booby trap s white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me В… he s lost his right arm . Literary devices such as this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary and depressing image of a past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that Komunyakaa wants certain words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one to concentrate on certain thoughts: I turn that wayВ—I m inside causes one to imagine that the main character is deep inside his train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious that the literal meaning of the phrase is that the character is ... Tim O Brien, author of Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong and Ernest Hemingway, author of The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber , certainly seem to hold this view, as evident by the fates of the major female characters in their respective works. The deviance of the major female characters in both works appears to corrupt not only themselves, but also pollute their partners, causing them to suffer injury or harm as a result. The degree of injury ranges from negligible, like Fossie s demotion and broken heart, to fatal, like the bullet that rips through Macomber s skull. It begs the question, are these stories meant to serve as cautionary tales for their female readers, or possibly for their husbands, so they may recognize genderdeviance and stop it in its tracks before their wives transform into Margot Macomber or Mary Anne Bell? I stand with the NFL players protesting the National Anthem and I will tell you why.
