begins with light as it comes in from external sources, with the amount of light being regulated by

I.Introduction
Buddhism was started by a man named Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha ). He was born ca. 563
B.C.E. in Lumbini near the Himalayan foothills. Siddhartha Gautama was the warrior son of a
king and queen. Legend has it that at his birth an astrologer predicted he would withdraw from
the temporal life. His father, in an effort to prevent this, provided him with many luxuries and
pleasures. As a young man, he once went on a series of four chariot rides where he first saw
severe forms of suffering: old age, illness, and death (a corpse), as well as an ascetic renouncer,
according to the Asia Society (2014). The Buddha had a difficult time reconciling his life
compared to human suffering and abandoned his way of life leaving his wife and new son. He
lived in the forest to the point of near starvation. Finally, he ate some food and sat down by a tree
to meditate. According to some approximately six months later he attained Nirvana and discovered
the true answers of suffering and the release from it.
There are three basic principles of the Buddha s teachings: Sila, Samadhi, and Panna. Sila is the
development of morality. Samadhi is the tool to purify the mind on order to see its nature, how to

taking this time to apply to graduate school. I am planning on applying to PhD programs in
material science, nanotechnology, or organic chemistry. For my PhD thesis I want to explore the

Phagocytosis is a crucial process in fighting pathogens and clearing away apoptotic debris and
senescent cells. Previous research has suggested that with age, there is a decline in this process,
which can contribute to the build up of senescent cells thus, exacerbating chronic inflammation
(van Deursen 2014). The current paradigm by Linehan et al, 2014 suggests that extracellular
environmental factors and the senescent associated secretory phenotype play a major role in
contributing to decreased phagocytic activity with age. In this experiment, we investigated for the
presence of a cell autonomous impairment in gut phagocytes that could contribute to a decline in

within the mhc+ cells in the wild type zebrafish gut, phagocytosis by macrophages within gut
phagocytes was higher than B cells.This high proportion of phagocytosis by macrophages
within leukocyte populations is consistent with Page et al s, 2013, in vivo study in which more
than half of the phagocytic cells in murine peritoneal cavity were macrophages. We further
quantified phagocytic efficiency of each cell type within their respective populations. 54.5% of
macrophages within the macrophage population were phagocytic and 33.8% of B cells within
the B cell population were phagocytic. Interestingly, previous research by Li et al, indicated that
teleost fish can show up to 60% of phagocytic behaviour by B cells. However, in contrast, a study

40 individuals were a part of Spotlight s outstanding production on February 6th, 2016. Each
year, Spotlight Dance Academy has a Kick Off event for the purpose of performing all the
routines for their competition season. This event is reserved for their elite troupe dancers to
evince their hard work and takes place in Grand Haven High School s performing arts center. An
event like this allows for the patrons to be entertained and the performers to express themselves
while participating in a sport they enjoy. For weeks in advance, my friends and I were planning
our car pools to support our friend. The day of the event, we all met and traveled in a few cars
down to Grand Haven High School, including a small detour to Starbucks. Once we arrived, we
had to wait in line for the doors to open. It was general admission so we got there early to ensure
all 15 of us could sit together. While standing in line, I began to observe the people. Surprisingly,
there was a plethora of people at this event, including parents, grandparents, and close friends.
Clearly, the people who were in attendance were here to see a specific individual. Many of them
carried flowers or signs to support their dancer. This created a celebratory and joyful atmosphere.
Soon, the doors opened and we were allowed to choose our seats. We were some of the first to be
