Summaries of Books on Central America
*Andrien, Kenneth J. Andean Worlds: Indigenous History, Culture, and Consciousness under Spanish
Rule, 1532 1825. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 2001.
Andrien s book is a historical summary of the Andean region from native people to after the Spanish
conquest. It addresses economy, culture, and the importance of religion, as well as power structures.
There is an emphasis on the continued existence of indigenous culture despite Spanish involvement
for hundreds of years.
The book is important in situating the context in which Rose of Lima lived and the native traditions
that would have influenced her and her family. Andrien s book can be used in understanding the
historical events that led up to Spanish rule and the importance of Catholicism and the power it held
over the native people and how it was used to establish Spanish control.

article discusses how Christian priests and religious figures replaced Indian deities and idols with
saints. The author relates the two together as connected processes, unlike previous scholars who
believed that they were not related. She talks about how preists stimulated support for up and coming
religious figures and how they portrayed saints to the Indians. The excitement for saints and their

Politics Of Trinidad And Tobago
Topic: Politics in Trinidad and Tobago
The topic of politics in Trinidad and Tobago is one that need major concern at its present standing.
Most inhabitants in this country (Trinidad and Tobago) are not familiar with how political debates are
supposed to be orchestrated. Politicians are supposed to talk about the issues an ways to overcome
them using hard work and determination not just saying choose me and I will give you this and choose
me and I will give u that . They are supposed to state a topic, state the issues of the said topic, state the
reasons why it s an issue, and how it became one and last state how they can be fixed/how you intend
to fix them to last over a period of time. Some topics that are relevant in this discussion are as follows:
Do you agree with the nationwide legalization of same sex marriage? Should Incest between two (2)
consensual adults be legalized? Bribes in politics, do conservatives compromise their integrity and
ethics for money? Should adultery be considered as a very serious crime? Should women have more
seats in government? Should killing a law enforcement merit the death penalty? And many more but
these are some of the topics that should be discussed because these are what are affecting the integrity
of our nation.
In the nation of Trinidad and Tobago we stress over the he say she say in other words we use what we

The Civil Rights Movement And The LGBTQ Rights Movement
Civil Rights Movement and The LGBTQ Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s
and the LGBTQ rights movement happening now seem different on the surface but are more similar
underneath. Many of the differences found between the two movements are only comparing the outer
layer and not what is going on below that layer. When you look at how similar they are at the core,
you will start to see a scary trend in the way people treat minorities in our society. The disturbing truth
is people fear differences. The two movements were started during different times. The Civil Rights
Movement started in 1955 and continued till 1968 (Janken). The LGBTQ movement was officially
founded in 1986 and is still going on now (LGBTQ). African Americans in the past and present are
being discriminated against and oppressed because of their skin color (Patterson). The LGBTQ
community is oppressed and discriminated against for their sexuality and gender (Singh and Durso).
In the 1960s, the African Americans were legally segregated from the majority because it was easy to
tell the difference between the oppressive group and the oppressed group (Jim). Looking at someone
will not reveal what their sexuality is, so this makes it difficult for the oppressors to separate them
from the majority group. These differences create the idea that each movement is happening for
unique reasons, but this is only when you look at the top layer of the movements. We know that both

Discussion Questions Browning
1. What is this poem s expressive purpose?
This poem s expressive purpose is to show the listener what the speaker s last duchess was like, and
through this, show what the duke himself is like. He explains that this piece was done very well, and
that the expression that the duchess seems to be making in the painting could be a result of when Fr
Pandolf chanced to say Her mantle laps / Over my lady s wrist too much, or Paint / Must never hope
to reproduce the faint / Half flush that dies along her throat. This shows that any simple compliments
that the painter may have chosen to give to the duchess were enough to cause a an earnest glance with
such depth and passion. From here on, the speaker is conveying serious disappointment in how the
duchess acted; she appreciated him just as she appreciated everything and everyone else.
2. How many characters do we find in this poem?
In this poem, we find six individual characters. There is the duke himself, the person he is speaking to
(who is servant to a count), the count, Fr Pandolf , Claus of Innsbruck who has cast in bronze a statue
of Neptune...Taming a sea horse for the duke, and the duchess herself. There are also some other
people that are spoken of, such as the officious fool who brought the duchess a bough of cherries and
the people who are waiting for the duke and the servant.

Thayer s Microcosm Of Culture
In discussing Dartmouth s landscape, we primarily stuck to the center of campus: the Green,
Dartmouth Hall, Baker Library, etc. On the way west side of campus, Thayer promptly sits, hidden by
the trees on the south side of Tuck Drive. As Pierce K. Lewis explains, if one part of the country looks
substantially different from some other part of the country, then the chances are very good that the
cultures of the two places are different also. We know that Dartmouth is not a country, but in essence it
has many qualities to resemble one an administration (government), employees (faculty and staff),
taxpayers (students), states (different academic major buildings).
Thus, Thayer is its own microcosm of culture, which is clearly resembled in its comparatively

The Great Pumpkin Comes Again Analysis
The Great Pumpkin Comes Again!
This is not a Linus fantasy sequence or a visit to the Twilight Zone. I?m referring, instead, to the
annual eruption of pumpkin recipes that seems to overshadow the coming of fall and the holiday
season, beginning with the eve of the Feast of All Hallows, or All Saints Day to Roman Catholics. It
seems that every year the uses for this orange colored squash expands and diversifies. This year is no
different. Don?t misunderstand me, I look forward to the annual visit of pumpkin donuts and muffins,

Tattoos And Its Effects On Society
In the past to get a tattoo you would have to go to a shady shack in the bad side of town where you
would be greeted by a dark smoky room and a man that looks like he is about to stab you. After
proving your worth by not bursting into tears you would haggle a price you want to pay and he would
begin tattooing you while smoking a cigarette and ashing all over your open wound. Today getting a
tattoo is a much more enjoyable thing to do you go to a clean shop and everything is sterile. I have
been in some tattoo shops that are cleaner than hospitals. Around the same time that tattoos were very
dangerous you could have as many as you wanted and join the military. There is a long history of
tattoos in the military, Sailors would get certain tattoos that signified where they were stationed.
Soldiers in the army would get tattoos representing their units, and the most sacred of all military
tattoos when they have lost a brother in combat. I believe that the government should let soldiers have
tattoos below their elbows and below their knees because, tattoos are very mainstream, they are
trained killers, most of the military has tattoos that would make them ineligible for reenlistment, it is
one of the last ways soldiers can show self expression in the military, and tattoos have such a rich
history in the military. I don t see why soldiers having tattoos above the wrist and below the neck
would be off limits. Every day men and women cycle through basic training where they are

Apathy Mantra Death; Apathy Empathy Healing William D. Tammeus, a journalist, once wrote that
You don t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry go round will
wave at his parents every time around and why his parents will always wave back. This quote
beautifully paints a picture of the natural love present between a parent and child. However,
sometimes this love becomes obscured and a disconnection occurs that prevents the parent from
empathy. The stories Two Kinds, and The Rocking Horse Winner show that a parent s lack of empathy
impacts the child s search for the self in the following phases: first, the search for the self is stunted ...

I pictured this prodigy part of me as many different images, and I tried each one on for size (Tan 405).
However as the time passes by, the mother s tests driven by a lack of empathy begins to suffocate and
stunt the search for the self within Jing mei. She recalls, And after seeing, once again, my mother s
disappointed face, something inside me began to die (Tan 406). As her search for the self is suffocated
to its threshold, Jing mei stands in front of the mirror. Here her search for the self is completely buried
and replaced with mantras, filled with lots of wont s. I won t let her change me... I won t be what I m
not (Tan 406).
In the second stage, the mantra intensifies and this can be observed in Paul as his mother continues to
deprive him of her empathy. While Paul s search for the self is deeply buried, his initial mantra does
get him the luck he is searching for. He wins five thousand pounds to secretly give to his mother. This
is an important and emotional gift to her because He was very anxious to see the effect of the birthday
letter... (Lawrence 359). This is an open window for Paul s healing and recovery of the self if she
could muster some emotion and empathy for his efforts. Instead, she leaves him still deprived. When
Paul watched her face as she read the letters... her face hardened and became more expressionless
(Lawrence 359). Asking for one last chance to see emotion capable of love and empathy on her
mother s face, Paul asks,

How Plot And Character Affect The Experience Of Tragic Art...
How Plot and Character Affect the Experience of Tragic Art
The experience of tragic art can be determined through the plot setup, the type of tragedy, and how the
plot appeals to the audience. Aristotle incorporated distinct rules in his passage about how a plot
should be arranged. He indicates that a tragedy must contain a prologue, episode, exode, and a choral
portion... (Aristotle, 2324), but does a plot need to be so planned? The plot should have some
structure, but it should also flow naturally and freely. If there is too much planning in the plot, then the
storyline will be too predictable. New ideas and turning points should be part of the story in order to
keep the audience on their toes. The scenes of the plot can be about realistic events or about imaginary
events. If the events are realistic it may appeal more to the audience in a personal way. Having a
strategically planned plot will keep the story line on track and there will be no unexpected surprises.
This however ruins the aesthetic of the development of the characters. The characters need to
encounter unexpected consequences and surprises in order to create a less expected appeal in the
audience. The plot in fact should be so framed that, even without seeing the things take place, he who
simply hears the account of them shall be filled with horror and pity at the incidents... (Aristotle,
2326). He believes that a planned plot will allow the audience to receive more emotions from the
tragedy. The audience

Explain How Has The Extraction Of Copper Changed The...
How has the extraction of copper changed the course of history? Copper (Chemical symbol Cu,
Atomic number 29), is one of the best electrical conductors in all metals, has influenced the use of
telecommunications throughout the world. We rely on copper for a lot of things power, heating,
lighting, transport, communication, and even coinage. The wide application of copper in our daily
lives has made our homes, schools and businesses pleasant, decorative and efficient but also has
created negative impacts in our environment. Copper is usually extracted from sulphide ores such as
Chalcopyrite. Since these ores contain low amounts of copper, they have to be concentrated through
froth flotation before refining. The sulphate ore is first mined underground, and then bought to the
surface to be crushed. Pine oil is then applied to the crushed copper ores, binding copper compounds
together, but not the rocky material remaining. The ore is then put in a tub of water through the feed
consisting of a foaming agent. Air is then released bit by bit in the agitator, causing bubbles to form.
The water repellent copper compounds are picked up with the bubbles, making them float, letting the
excess froth flow over the sides, creating concentrated copper in the concentrate launder. ... Show

Froth flotation Process The ore is then heated with silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate and air in a
furnace. The copper (II) ions in the ore are converted to copper (I) sulphide, while the iron in the ore is
transferred into iron (II) silicate slag (Due to the calcium carbonate), furthermore, a majority of the
sulphur turns into sulphur dioxide gas. The equation used in the above steps is as follows: 2CuFeS +

The Element Of Moral Philosophy By James Rachels
In the book, The Element of Moral Philosophy , James Rachels explores the several criticisms of
Utilitarianism. In this essay, I will touch on these criticisms, outlining the major implications they
propose to Utilitarianism. I will also explain why many of the notions proposed against Utilitarianism
are self serving, and instead serve to improve the general good of a minority population, which
contradicts the Utilitarian theory of equating moral aptitude to the general good of a majority
population, and that in this respect a greater consequence is achieved. Lastly, I will demonstrate how
many societal values have a Utilitarian basis, which proves that Utilitarianism can be salvaged in the
face of most criticisms.
In substance, the nature of Utilitarianism is derived of consequence. Utilitarianism proposes that the
outcome of an act should suggest whether or not said act is morally correct. Many philosophers
disagree, and believe that the consequence of an act does little to implicate morality. For example,
there are numerous crimes committed daily. Some of these crimes remain undiscovered and therefore
result in zero negative consequence. The text specifically outlines a particular situation wherein a
peeping Tom spies on a woman without her ever finding out. If the woman never finds out, then she
has no reason to be upset, and in contrast the peeping Tom will be evidently pleased. This results in a
positive outcome, or positive consequence, and therefore would

Anti Discriminatory Practice
This essay will consider the prominence of anti judgemental and anti discriminatory practice through
the examination of the chosen article Queer treatments: giving a voice to former patients who received
treatments for their sexual deviation by Dickinson, Cook, Playle and Hallett (2012). The three
significant messages highlighted are the harmful medical practice utilised on the patients, the
criminalisation of homosexuality until 1967 (Dickinson 2010) and the lack of autonomy of nursing
profession. In this essay, the harmful medical practice will be discussed in relation to The Code (NMC
2015), the NHS Constitution (DoH 2015) and the Equality Act (2010).
The National Health Service (NHS) carried out several treatments to cure homosexuality and
transvestism (Dickinson 2010). Chemical aversion therapy involved inducing vomiting by using a
strong emetic, apomorphine, whereas electrical aversion therapy involved the patient receiving electric
shocks. These treatments were enabled by doctors and nurses to alter the sexual orientation of certain
individuals (Dickinson et al 2012). A barbaric torture scene by the Gestapo in Nazi Germany trying to
extract information from me is how Percival Thatcher (Dickinson 2015) described aversion therapy
from his experience. Because of the intensive nature of the chemical aversion therapy, individuals
receiving chemical aversion therapy were inpatients at psychiatric wards (Smith et al. 2004). This

Analysis Of The God Of Small Things
Perceiving through the gender and sexually lens in the novel The God of Small Things, it have
illustrated the severity of gender oppression and discrimination through examination of the marital and
intergender relations like patriarchy, gender roles and love. Specifically in the novel, Ammu,
Mammachi and Baby Kochamma are all female characters and that they have experienced horrible
discriminations and oppressions due to their gender, religion and statuses which have torn them
between traditional norms and modern attitudes. Sadly speaking, their private love relationships are
actually socially and politically regulated to emphases of caste and religion. Reversing the natural
uncontrollability of who to love, in what way and to what extent, results in equally unnatural
insurrections and obstructions of love relationship. The love laws are basically to put or set boundaries
between the upper caste and lower caste which they are not allow to have any sexual relationship
besides working as intensive labor. Women who are married are expected to be a good house wives
and to serve their husband. This novel have demonstrated gender oppression, sexism and
discrimination against women. When the female characters attempt to challenge or disobey the
customs, laws, values of social and cultural boundaries, they commit moral transgressions which
ultimately lead them toward their death and ruination. Therefore, majority women doesn t have an

The Vertebrate Immune System
The vertebrate immune system is composed of a constellation of diverse immune cell types, each with
an exquisite ability to protect the host from infectious agents, cancers, and other immunopathologies.
Central to the success of this elegant complex system is the arm of adaptive immunity, dominated by
the effects of T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes. In terms of evolutionary history, an immunological
big bang resulted in the adoption of T/B lymphocyte receptors as dominant anti pathogen defense
system by the vertebrate lineage (Flajnik, 2014; Pancer Cooper, 2006). The result is the near virtual

The Deregulation Of The Insurance Industry Essay
INTRODUCTION
Life insurance is a form of insurance that pays monetary proceeds upon the death of the insured
covered in the policy. Essentially, a life insurance policy is a contract between the named insured and
the insurance company wherein the insurance company agrees to pay an agreed sum of money to the
insured s beneficiary. With a large population and the untapped market area insurance happens to be a
very big opportunity in India. Today it stands as a business growing at the rate of 15 20% annually.
Together with banking services, it adds about 7 percent to the country s GDP. In spite of all this, the
growth statistics of the penetration of the insurance in the country is very poor. Nearly 80% of Indian
population is without life and health insurance cover. This is an indicator that growth potential for the
insurance sector is immense in India. It was due to this immense growth that the regulations were
introduced in the insurance sector and in continuation Malhotra Committee was constituted by the
government in 1993 to examine the various aspects of the industry. The key element of the reform
process was participation of overseas insurance companies with 26% capital. Creating a more
competitive financial system suitable for the requirements of the economy was the main idea behind
this reform.
CLASSIFICATION OF INSURANCE
The insurance industry in India can broadly classified in two parts. They are.
1) Life insurance.
2) Non life (general) insurance.

Separating proved no help, but only aiding in more doubting and hurt. Hurting not only my parents but
my brothers and I as well. They finally divorced, and when they did my life changed. No more picture
perfect life, and it had already dissipated soon before the divorce. I just conflicted with myself to
believe that what I had was gone. I felt my like life was a lie. Like some sort of fictional story. I
felt,off.
A few years after the divorce I had to come to realization that it wasn t my fault that they divorced. It
wasn t a lie I lived, I just had to accept the reality of life and relationships. I had to ensure myself that I
just had to overcome it and not see myself in the manner that I did.I had to learn that. And learning
that wasn t an easy task. I had to change my perception to see that life gives lessons and you just have
to be able to be perseverant and grow. Today I realize that it wasn t because of me, and I have come to
terms to accept life and it s

Effects Of Labelling On Deviant Behaviour
What is defined as deviance can be dependent on one s subjective views which can be influence the
study of crime and reliability of crime statistics. Within my essay I ll be exploring the effects of
labelling on deviant behaviour, and the ways in which views differ due to the influence of various
groups within society and the influence of the media on societies interpretation of deviance. Deviance
is understood to be behaviour which deviates from what is seen as the norm or what is socially
acceptable by violating the rules of groups in society, and on that basis an individual s behaviour can
be labelled as deviant. Within many societies particular rules are enforced leading to expectations of
those within that society and subsequently those who do not abide to these rules are perceived as
deviant. Acts of deviance can be seen to be either primary or secondary deviance. The terms primary
and secondary deviance capture the distinction between original and effective causes of deviance
(Lemert 1951,1967). Lemert (1951,1967) argued that several acts of norm violations that occur
occasionally e.g. underage boy who occasionally drinks at a party often causes very little reaction
from others therefore the individuals perception of themselves will also not be effected, this is
considered as primary deviance. However secondary deviance occurs when others take notice and
respond to one s deviant behaviour. Consequently, this can lead individuals to associate themselves

Early Signs Of Abscess In The Tooth
An abscess in the tooth refers to an infection that was caused by a pocket of pus existing in the tissue
throughout the tooth. If they aren t treated promptly, abscesses are extremely acute ailments, and may
lead to even more serious conditions. When the pulp of a tooth dies due to decay or damage, bacteria
will start to grow from the dead tissue that is left. These bacteria will eventually spread into the tissue
that s below from the root of the tooth that is dead and make a pocket of pus the abscess. Tooth

Signs Of Tooth Abscess The symptoms of an abscessed tooth are not difficult to see, as they include
severe pain in the affected area, red or swollen gums, a poor taste in your mouth, swelling on the jaw
or the region around it, and perhaps a high fever. Pain is excruciating with an abscess, generally
affecting the region in a way that is bad. No matter what you do, the pain seems to intensify.
Abscesses largely occur with back teeth, although they could happen in the front too. Your dentist won

the abscessed tooth is pulled, it can easily propagate. Last but not least, he may also drill a hole in the
tooth to provide an opportunity to empty and try to eliminate any dead pulp to the disease. The most
typical treatment of an abscess would be to make use of antibiotics to kill the disease, then get the

Causes Of The New Deal
The Great Depression of the 1930 s became one of the United States biggest tragedies and placed
stress upon millions of Americans and their families. President Franklin Roosevelt became every
American s hopeful savior. During this decade of depression, President Roosevelt created the New
Deal blueprint, which included many Federal Agencies, otherwise known as Alphabet Soup, that
focused on addressing the roots of the Great Depression and ways to fix them. The main agencies of
the New Deal were the: Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC), National Recovery Administration (NRA), Social Security Administration (SSA), Tennessee
Valley Authority (TVA), and Works Progress Administration (WPA). The New Deal was a successful
plan, which included many federal agencies; although most of the agencies were successful, the relief
agencies were the most successful.
President Roosevelt s Alphabet Soup Agencies were created based on his three r s mission: relief,
recovery, and reform. His idea of relief was giving direct aid to the homeless and unemployed. His
goal for his idea of recovery was fixing the economy and focusing on creating jobs and establishing
new successful small businesses. Lastly, President Roosevelt s goal for the nation s reform was to
solve issues within the federal government and create new federal agencies that would prevent another
Great Depression. These three R s were the basis of his New Deal project and the foundations of every
Alphabet Soup Agency.
The recovery based Agriculture Adjustment Administration (AAA), was the first federal program to
place a limit on agricultural production. During the World War One (WWI), agricultural production
was very profitable for Americans because many European countries were unable to produce large
amounts of agriculture, so American agriculture was always in high demand. After WWI ended,
Europeans were able to begin to restore their agricultural industry; thus, making American agriculture
in low demand. This caused items like corn to go from $1.20 per bushel to 26 cents per bushel. Not
only agriculture prices retract back to prewar prices, but farmers began losing their land due to a
decline in the earning power of

The Treatment Of Physician Assisted Suicide
Just imagine...the invitation arriving in the mail, it was no ordinary invite. The days of physical misery
and suffering that lead up to this final celebration of life were unbearable to watch. Having a
terminally ill family member is hard because you know the days, weeks and months are numbered.
Quality of life, what is that anyway? Each passing hour has the quality of life diminishing to
unimaginable physical pain and anguish. Watching someone you love slip away and turn into a shell
of who they once were is unbearable. This invitation is special. This special day and every precious
hour will give the loved ones a time to say goodbye just before they die with dignity in physician
assisted suicide. Terminally ill patients have the right to end their own lives using physician assisted
suicide (PAS) without repercussions of laws and people with opposing opinions.
According to an article from CNN.com, there are currently five states in the U.S. where physician
assisted suicide is currently legal. In order to be eligible legally for PAS the patient must have six
months or less to live. In the states of Oregon, California, Vermont, Washington and Montana a
physician can prescribe medications to move along the death without being prosecuted for murder.
It is hard to know the correct statistics on just how many physician assisted suicides happen across the
U.S. Since it is illegal in the majority of the states it is not something that is reported because those

How Did Italy Transition Into The Renaissance
The Islamic world enabled Europe s transition into the Renaissance by allowing Italy, the center of the
Renaissance, to prosper through trade with Venice, and by being the source of many of the writings
that Renaissance scholars studied.
Italy became the center of the Renaissance for one reason: money. It was necessary for a society to be
wealthy in order to support artists, for they were paid only through patronage. Patrons were the
people, or organizations, that would pay artists and scholars to work for them. Italy was certainly the
richest nation in Europe. The country generated wealth through two different forms. Its city states
were industrial powerhouses, each with its specific product. Florence made cloth, Milan made arms,
and Venice, the most economically successful Italian city state, profited from trade.
Venice, a city made up of hundred of islands on the northern tip of the Adriatic sea, was Venice was

To: Amanda Rico, Instructor: English 210 Section 581
From: Jared Glenn
Subject: MWP 2 Outline of Report Completion
Purpose
The purpose of this memo is to provide an outline of the topics I plan to conduct further research on
and compile that research in a formalized report over the specifics of those topics. The final result will
be a proposed program, backed with modern research sourcing, ready for completion.
Introduction
In reference to my last memo, I discussed plans to make alterations to Francis Hall, a newly renovated
building on the Texas A M Campus for the Construction Science Department and student. Specifically,
the first task is survey to compile major courses of action, followed by compiling a proposal in
conjunction with a general contractor for consideration by the Board of Regents. The original
renovation had a budget of 5 million dollars, which included classrooms, a computer lab, student
lounge, lavatories, and staff offices. The renovation is suitable for the current status of Construction
Science; however the growing program will soon outgrow the building. For these reasons, I am
writing a follow up memo of the topics to be included in my upcoming researched recommendation
report.
Tasks to be Researched
With approval to conduct research on my proposed tasks, I will begin by restating each task from the
original memo, followed by the subtasks I will research for each main task.
Main Task 1. Research student opinion, and popular

The Psychodynamic Approach To Psychology
The psychodynamic approach is an approach to psychology that emphasizes systematic study of the
psychological forces that underlie human behavior, feelings, and emotions and how they might relate
to early experience. Sigmund Freud the founder of the psychodynamic approach to psychology or
psychoanalysis. While he led the process to look at subconscious thoughts and desires most of his
beliefs were wrong. Some beliefs are that our behavior and feelings as adults (including psychological
problems) are rooted in our childhood experiences, Personality is made up of three parts: the id, ego
and superego. Parts of the unconscious mind (the id and superego) are in constant conflict with the
conscious part of the mind (the ego).
Using this approach focuses on the analysis of the subconscious. When treating Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder a psychologist will propose therapy. The first thing a therapist might recommed
it to try as hard as possible to not commit the action they want to commit. Paired with medication this
can be a very effective tool. Analyze the compulsion to the environmental events and to other factor
that increase compulsion. Then to document what the patient avoids doing or exposing themselves to
in order to avoid the compulsion. After doing all of these steps they decide how long they have to ...

The Police Powers of Search, Arrest, and Interrogation Essay
The Powers of Police
Individuals have civil rights; people are entitled to be allowed to move freely and to have their person
and their property respected. However the police must have sufficient powers to investigate crimes.
Therefore Parliament has given the police special powers that can be used in certain circumstances.
These powers include the rights to stop and search suspects, to arrest and interview people when
necessary and to take fingerprints and samples (blood samples) for scientific analysis.
Without the police having these certain powers then it would be nearly impossible to investigate any
crimes. But it is also important for the police to remember that, at the same time, they ... Show more

To use this power under PACE the police officer must have reasonable grounds for suspecting that the
person is in possession of or the vehicle contains stolen goods or prohibited articles, such as items of
offensive weapons, and articles for use in connection with burglary or theft.
As these powers are very wide there are safeguards in that the police officer must give his name and
station and the reason for the search. If he or she fails to give reason for the search, then the search is
unlawful. This was shown in the case of Osman v DPP 1999, where the officers did not give their
names and station. The Queens Bench Divisional Court held that this made a search of Mr. Osman
unlawful and so he could not be guilty of assaulting the police in the execution of their duty.
If the search is in public, the police can only request that the suspect removes his or her outer coat,
jacket and gloves.
The code of practice A contains details and guidance on when these powers should be used. In
particular it stresses that police officers must not act just because of a person s characteristics.
Paragraph 1.7 of code A says:
Reasonable suspicion can never be supported on the basis of personal factors alone. For example, a
person s colour, age, hairstyle or manner

Carpenter received critical acclaim for Assault in Precinct 13. From the introduction of the film, we
are given settle warnings about the events to come. Carpenter captures many street scenes with signs
that said no parking , do not enter and no seating . Interestingly enough these signs would appear right
before or after a scene of devastation. Carpenter uses color to convey symbolic messages as well. The
color blue is used on the African American officer tie to convey patriotism and civil service. On the
other hand the color red is used in the brae of one of gang members and stands out on all of the
warning signs to symbolize danger (bad guys). Even more symbolic is the dart board which is hung in
the police station, which had two blue darts and a red bulls eye reinforcing the conflict between good
guys vs. bad buys consequently as the movie plots envelopes, we find ourselves catching the settle
details along the way.
John Carpenters career began while he was still studying in college. He launched his career with the
makings of short films in 1962. Carpenter experienced success early in his career, going on to win his

Street Children
INTRODUCTION
One of the miseries brought by the modern civilization is the situation of the street children. In the old
times, and still now in some areas, children worked with their parents and reamed a lot of things from
them; later, children looked after aged parents, and therefore much value was put on children, and
there was strong bond of affection between parents and child. However, now it has changed. Parents
go to work, and children do not go to work with them. Children only cost much money for food and
education. Parents of a poor family are suffering from much financial stress. As the stress becomes

conducted actual outreach on the streets, conducted interviews, made initial contact with families or

Characteristics of self regulation include; trustworthiness, integrity and openness to change. Internal

Who has emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is similar to intelligence quotient (IQ) in the respect that we all have it to
some degree. Both emotional intelligence and intelligence quotient have standardized tests to evaluate
your EQ and IQ respectively. Even though one s IQ can change over time, you are likely remain in the

Essay On Macbeth s Loyalty To A Green Heart
Illustrated with a green heart, you can see Macbeth s first aspect of his character being loyalty. In the
beginning of the play, Macbeth tells how he feels about king Duncan by stating that the service and
the loyalty I owe in doing it pays itself (Act 1, scene 4). Macbeth most certainly had a heart and loads
of compassion to the ones he was close to. At the start, he may have even been the only person to
express such loyalty to the king. Just like fresh grown trees, Macbeth still had that clean mindset and
that goodness in his heart. Therefore coming into the play, Macbeth is introduced as a green, healthy
heart.
Consequently, Macbeth s ambition for power turned him into a greedy man which is shown as a
yellow crown. Wanting even more, Macbeth says the Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I
must fall down, or else o erleap, For in my way it lies (Act 1, scene 4, lines 55 57). After all that
Macbeth has gone through, he only had the crown in mind now. He was made Prince of Cumberland
by the king that he showed his loyalty to. But at this point of the play, the crown was the only thing for
him. The power of a king was more than anything. Greedy Macbeth falls into this trap, and now the
green fades to yellow. This mello unsatisfying color is what Macbeth turns ... Show more content on

city council on future growth patterns of the county in consultation with a Citizen Committee to
established goals and applied various zones to an area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Retooling the staff so that it would be able to predict problems and work with communities and
development interests of other public agencies was her number one priority. Teams that are cohesive,
productive, and efficient, whose members enjoy doing their work and working together, are a result of
managers developing and leading teams that work in these ways. Successful teams are cohesive
because team members work cooperatively, sharing common goals as well as the resources to achieve
them. They are productive, because they have clarity on the common goal and purpose. The manager
in the case determined this to be the first priority in her efforts to turn the department around. She
helped the staff decide wither they wanted to be a part of her vision for the department. She
accomplished by clearly identifying her goals and objectives then had them make a clear choice, you
re either in or you re out, shifting the focus from skills and talents of the existing staff to their
priorities and values. They are efficient because tasks are assigned in a way that takes into account the
broader picture and strategy, rather than letting the team be dominated by near sighted tasks that did
not produce a valuable product to their customers, shifting from policy recommendations based on
research to active negotiations with communities. Now

Changing The Voting Age
In 2012, 62% of Americans that are elgible voters actually did vote. It should be our goal to have a
higher voting rate like in Belgium it s elgible voters are at 93% participation. Changing the legal
voting age from eighteen to sixteen won t change the participation rate. I believe the legal voting age
of eighteen needs to stay how it is because younger voters already have a small outcome of voters and
a voter younger than eighteen isn t truly an adult. If we change the voting age now it will only hurt
than help.
There is only 38% of younger population that did vote in 2012. So if there isn t a difference in age the
numbers will still be very small. Letting people a couple years younger vote, won t help boost the
participation, but make the younger voters have even lower voting rates. I believe that younger people
of the age of sixteen most likely are too young to understand everything about politics. So if they
cannot comprehend the politics of it all then they sure won t vote if they don t even know. The small
percentage of voters is just one fact that proves changing the legal voting age won t change anything
for the participation of voting Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The brains are still developing in a young adults mind. If the age of voting went down anymore it will
only be changing the legal age, but most sixteen year olds aren t having their minds set on politics. It s
better to keep the legal voting age to eighteen so it s fully developed adults that have grown from
graduating from high school can vote properly. Politicians need to remember that eighteen is suppose
to be the age someone turns into a real adult in this world. It s better to keep the legal age of eighteen
for real adults that can make real choices like

Comparing Bachelor s Degrees
Several consistent messages emerge from looking at the wages of graduates across institutions. One is
that graduates first year earnings range widely. In all five states, at least $18,000 separates the schools
where bachelor s graduates earn the most from schools where graduates earned the least during their
first year on the job. The difference between master s graduates from different institutions ranges from
more than $10,000 in Arkansas to more than $40,000 in Tennessee and Texas. At the master s level,
across the states, graduates with degrees in mechanical engineering, computer/information sciences,
and mathematics are the highest paid, with chemistry graduates also earning more than graduates from
the remaining fields. In Texas, where

The Pros And Cons Of The Monarch Butterfly
They classify many species of animals and living organisms. The monarch butterflies are not essential
to the ecosystem, so many do not care that they are near threatened. This is a serious problem because
monarchs represent so much more than most humans see. Lafontaine and Jeffery P. Crolla write
various status reports about living creatures. The Monarch butterfly is a symbol of natural history
conservation. Recent disasters and human pressures at the overwintering sites have made the Monarch
susceptible to a catastrophic decline in numbers that could potentially push the North American
population of the Monarch to the brink of extinction (Lafontaine and Crolla). The quote mentions that
the monarchs are a part of history. It also mentions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They do not have the resources they need in order to reproduce. The bare minimum resources they
need is milkweed and the proper daylight and warm temperature. They are barely making it by in
society today and there are statistics to prove that they are hurting. A University of Minnesota
professor, Karen Oberhauser, says the population is less than half of the population from the previous
year (Gregory). She has been studying monarchs for over 30 years. The Illinois Butterfly Monitoring
Network stand behind Oberhauser s observation. This means that their whole species has been cut in
half in just one year. It is frightening to think that the species could get cut in half again this year if
nothing were to change. Animals are classified by how common they are around the world. The
monarch is now the seventh most common species this year when it was usually second or third most
common in previous years. This makes perfect sense because the population is cut in half so their
commonality has been more than doubled. The places that monarchs have been observed is also
decreasing. Places include specific sites where monarchs gather and preserves throughout North
America. Monarchs have been spotted at only forty eight of the sixty eight sites that are observed in
the past year. Twenty of the sites have no sight of monarchs. The monarchs are categorized into
different types of species, and the number of species has dropped from eighty five to sixty eight this
year (Gregory), so this means that some species have already died off. When people say that the
monarch population is not close to being endangered, it is a false statement because some of the
species are already extinct. The entire monarch population is not near becoming extinct because there
are so many types, but the ones that are already extinct get overlooked because many monarchs look

  • 2. Summaries of Books on Central America *Andrien, Kenneth J. Andean Worlds: Indigenous History, Culture, and Consciousness under Spanish Rule, 1532 1825. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 2001. Andrien s book is a historical summary of the Andean region from native people to after the Spanish conquest. It addresses economy, culture, and the importance of religion, as well as power structures. There is an emphasis on the continued existence of indigenous culture despite Spanish involvement for hundreds of years. The book is important in situating the context in which Rose of Lima lived and the native traditions that would have influenced her and her family. Andrien s book can be used in understanding the historical events that led up to Spanish rule and the importance of Catholicism and the power it held over the native people and how it was used to establish Spanish control. Cussen, Celia L. The Search for Idols and Saints in Colonial Peru: Linking Extipation and Beatification. Hispanic American Historical Review 85 (2005): 417 48. Accessed March 7, 2014. The article discusses how Christian priests and religious figures replaced Indian deities and idols with saints. The author relates the two together as connected processes, unlike previous scholars who believed that they were not related. She talks about how preists stimulated support for up and coming religious figures and how they portrayed saints to the Indians. The excitement for saints and their deeds was heightened by the destruction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Politicians are supposed to talk about the issues an ways to overcome them using hard work and determination not just saying choose me and I will give you this and choose me and I will give u that . They are supposed to state a topic, state the issues of the said topic, state the reasons why it s an issue, and how it became one and last state how they can be fixed/how you intend to fix them to last over a period of time. Some topics that are relevant in this discussion are as follows: Do you agree with the nationwide legalization of same sex marriage? Should Incest between two (2) consensual adults be legalized? Bribes in politics, do conservatives compromise their integrity and ethics for money? Should adultery be considered as a very serious crime? Should women have more seats in government? Should killing a law enforcement merit the death penalty? And many more but these are some of the topics that should be discussed because these are what are affecting the integrity of our nation. The Civil Rights Movement And The LGBTQ Rights Movement Civil Rights Movement and The LGBTQ Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and the LGBTQ rights movement happening now seem different on the surface but are more similar underneath. Many of the differences found between the two movements are only comparing the outer layer and not what is going on below that layer. When you look at how similar they are at the core, you will start to see a scary trend in the way people treat minorities in our society. The disturbing truth is people fear differences. The two movements were started during different times. The Civil Rights Movement started in 1955 and continued till 1968 (Janken). The LGBTQ movement was officially founded in 1986 and is still going on now (LGBTQ). African Americans in the past and present are being discriminated against and oppressed because of their skin color (Patterson). The LGBTQ community is oppressed and discriminated against for their sexuality and gender (Singh and Durso). In the 1960s, the African Americans were legally segregated from the majority because it was easy to tell the difference between the oppressive group and the oppressed group (Jim). Looking at someone will not reveal what their sexuality is, so this makes it difficult for the oppressors to separate them from the majority group. These differences create the idea that each movement is happening for unique reasons, but this is only when you look at the top layer of the movements. We know that both ... This poem s expressive purpose is to show the listener what the speaker s last duchess was like, and through this, show what the duke himself is like. He explains that this piece was done very well, and that the expression that the duchess seems to be making in the painting could be a result of when Fr Pandolf chanced to say Her mantle laps / Over my lady s wrist too much, or Paint / Must never hope to reproduce the faint / Half flush that dies along her throat. This shows that any simple compliments that the painter may have chosen to give to the duchess were enough to cause a an earnest glance with such depth and passion. From here on, the speaker is conveying serious disappointment in how the duchess acted; she appreciated him just as she appreciated everything and everyone else. 2. How many characters do we find in this poem? In this poem, we find six individual characters. There is the duke himself, the person he is speaking to (who is servant to a count), the count, Fr Pandolf , Claus of Innsbruck who has cast in bronze a statue of Neptune...Taming a sea horse for the duke, and the duchess herself. There are also some other people that are spoken of, such as the officious fool who brought the duchess a bough of cherries and the people who are waiting for the duke and the servant. 3. Soldiers in the army would get tattoos representing their units, and the most sacred of all military tattoos when they have lost a brother in combat. I believe that the government should let soldiers have tattoos below their elbows and below their knees because, tattoos are very mainstream, they are trained killers, most of the military has tattoos that would make them ineligible for reenlistment, it is one of the last ways soldiers can show self expression in the military, and tattoos have such a rich history in the military. Tammeus, a journalist, once wrote that You don t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry go round will wave at his parents every time around and why his parents will always wave back. This quote beautifully paints a picture of the natural love present between a parent and child. However, sometimes this love becomes obscured and a disconnection occurs that prevents the parent from empathy. She recalls, And after seeing, once again, my mother s disappointed face, something inside me began to die (Tan 406). As her search for the self is suffocated to its threshold, Jing mei stands in front of the mirror. Here her search for the self is completely buried and replaced with mantras, filled with lots of wont s. I won t let her change me... I won t be what I m not (Tan 406). In the second stage, the mantra intensifies and this can be observed in Paul as his mother continues to deprive him of her empathy. • 12. How Plot And Character Affect The Experience Of Tragic Art... How Plot and Character Affect the Experience of Tragic Art The experience of tragic art can be determined through the plot setup, the type of tragedy, and how the plot appeals to the audience. Aristotle incorporated distinct rules in his passage about how a plot should be arranged. He indicates that a tragedy must contain a prologue, episode, exode, and a choral portion... (Aristotle, 2324), but does a plot need to be so planned? The plot should have some structure, but it should also flow naturally and freely. If there is too much planning in the plot, then the storyline will be too predictable. New ideas and turning points should be part of the story in order to keep the audience on their toes. The scenes of the plot can be about realistic events or about imaginary events. If the events are realistic it may appeal more to the audience in a personal way. Having a strategically planned plot will keep the story line on track and there will be no unexpected surprises. This however ruins the aesthetic of the development of the characters. The characters need to encounter unexpected consequences and surprises in order to create a less expected appeal in the audience. The plot in fact should be so framed that, even without seeing the things take place, he who simply hears the account of them shall be filled with horror and pity at the incidents... • 13. Explain How Has The Extraction Of Copper Changed The... How has the extraction of copper changed the course of history? Copper (Chemical symbol Cu, Atomic number 29), is one of the best electrical conductors in all metals, has influenced the use of telecommunications throughout the world. We rely on copper for a lot of things power, heating, lighting, transport, communication, and even coinage. The wide application of copper in our daily lives has made our homes, schools and businesses pleasant, decorative and efficient but also has created negative impacts in our environment. Copper is usually extracted from sulphide ores such as Chalcopyrite. Since these ores contain low amounts of copper, they have to be concentrated through froth flotation before refining. The sulphate ore is first mined underground, and then bought to the surface to be crushed. Pine oil is then applied to the crushed copper ores, binding copper compounds together, but not the rocky material remaining. The ore is then put in a tub of water through the feed consisting of a foaming agent. Air is then released bit by bit in the agitator, causing bubbles to form. The water repellent copper compounds are picked up with the bubbles, making them float, letting the excess froth flow over the sides, creating concentrated copper in the concentrate launder. ... • 14. The Element Of Moral Philosophy By James Rachels In the book, The Element of Moral Philosophy , James Rachels explores the several criticisms of Utilitarianism. In this essay, I will touch on these criticisms, outlining the major implications they propose to Utilitarianism. I will also explain why many of the notions proposed against Utilitarianism are self serving, and instead serve to improve the general good of a minority population, which contradicts the Utilitarian theory of equating moral aptitude to the general good of a majority population, and that in this respect a greater consequence is achieved. Lastly, I will demonstrate how many societal values have a Utilitarian basis, which proves that Utilitarianism can be salvaged in the face of most criticisms. In substance, the nature of Utilitarianism is derived of consequence. Utilitarianism proposes that the outcome of an act should suggest whether or not said act is morally correct. Many philosophers disagree, and believe that the consequence of an act does little to implicate morality. For example, there are numerous crimes committed daily. Some of these crimes remain undiscovered and therefore result in zero negative consequence. The text specifically outlines a particular situation wherein a peeping Tom spies on a woman without her ever finding out. If the woman never finds out, then she has no reason to be upset, and in contrast the peeping Tom will be evidently pleased. This results in a positive outcome, or positive consequence, and therefore would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Anti Discriminatory Practice This essay will consider the prominence of anti judgemental and anti discriminatory practice through the examination of the chosen article Queer treatments: giving a voice to former patients who received treatments for their sexual deviation by Dickinson, Cook, Playle and Hallett (2012). The three significant messages highlighted are the harmful medical practice utilised on the patients, the criminalisation of homosexuality until 1967 (Dickinson 2010) and the lack of autonomy of nursing profession. In this essay, the harmful medical practice will be discussed in relation to The Code (NMC 2015), the NHS Constitution (DoH 2015) and the Equality Act (2010). The National Health Service (NHS) carried out several treatments to cure homosexuality and transvestism (Dickinson 2010). Chemical aversion therapy involved inducing vomiting by using a strong emetic, apomorphine, whereas electrical aversion therapy involved the patient receiving electric shocks. These treatments were enabled by doctors and nurses to alter the sexual orientation of certain individuals (Dickinson et al 2012). A barbaric torture scene by the Gestapo in Nazi Germany trying to extract information from me is how Percival Thatcher (Dickinson 2015) described aversion therapy from his experience. Within my essay I ll be exploring the effects of labelling on deviant behaviour, and the ways in which views differ due to the influence of various groups within society and the influence of the media on societies interpretation of deviance. Deviance is understood to be behaviour which deviates from what is seen as the norm or what is socially acceptable by violating the rules of groups in society, and on that basis an individual s behaviour can be labelled as deviant. Within many societies particular rules are enforced leading to expectations of those within that society and subsequently those who do not abide to these rules are perceived as deviant. Acts of deviance can be seen to be either primary or secondary deviance. The terms primary and secondary deviance capture the distinction between original and effective causes of deviance (Lemert 1951,1967). Lemert (1951,1967) argued that several acts of norm violations that occur occasionally e.g. underage boy who occasionally drinks at a party often causes very little reaction from others therefore the individuals perception of themselves will also not be effected, this is considered as primary deviance. However secondary deviance occurs when others take notice and respond to one s deviant behaviour. Consequently, this can lead individuals to associate themselves with ... • 27. Causes Of The New Deal The Great Depression of the 1930 s became one of the United States biggest tragedies and placed stress upon millions of Americans and their families. President Franklin Roosevelt became every American s hopeful savior. During this decade of depression, President Roosevelt created the New Deal blueprint, which included many Federal Agencies, otherwise known as Alphabet Soup, that focused on addressing the roots of the Great Depression and ways to fix them. The main agencies of the New Deal were the: Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA), Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), National Recovery Administration (NRA), Social Security Administration (SSA), Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and Works Progress Administration (WPA). The New Deal was a successful plan, which included many federal agencies; although most of the agencies were successful, the relief agencies were the most successful. President Roosevelt s Alphabet Soup Agencies were created based on his three r s mission: relief, recovery, and reform. His idea of relief was giving direct aid to the homeless and unemployed. His goal for his idea of recovery was fixing the economy and focusing on creating jobs and establishing new successful small businesses. Lastly, President Roosevelt s goal for the nation s reform was to solve issues within the federal government and create new federal agencies that would prevent another Great Depression. These three R s were the basis of his New Deal project and the foundations of every Alphabet Soup Agency. The recovery based Agriculture Adjustment Administration (AAA), was the first federal program to place a limit on agricultural production. During the World War One (WWI), agricultural production was very profitable for Americans because many European countries were unable to produce large amounts of agriculture, so American agriculture was always in high demand. After WWI ended, Europeans were able to begin to restore their agricultural industry; thus, making American agriculture in low demand. This caused items like corn to go from $1.20 per bushel to 26 cents per bushel. The final result will be a proposed program, backed with modern research sourcing, ready for completion. Introduction In reference to my last memo, I discussed plans to make alterations to Francis Hall, a newly renovated building on the Texas A M Campus for the Construction Science Department and student. If he or she fails to give reason for the search, then the search is unlawful. This was shown in the case of Osman v DPP 1999, where the officers did not give their names and station. The Queens Bench Divisional Court held that this made a search of Mr. Osman unlawful and so he could not be guilty of assaulting the police in the execution of their duty. If the search is in public, the police can only request that the suspect removes his or her outer coat, jacket and gloves. The code of practice A contains details and guidance on when these powers should be used. In particular it stresses that police officers must not act just because of a person s characteristics.
