Medicine In The Medieval Era
The study of medicine stretches as far back as can be remembered and has been an integral area of
study in every society and civilization throughout history. Medicine is constantly improving and
being innovated, making the treatment of various diseases and ailments easier and easier. However,
in the early millennia, the rate at which medicinewas being improved and innovated was not as
rapid as it is today. The physicians and doctors of the time were not as skilled as the medical
professionals in the present era. Lacking the technology and knowledge people have today, the
people in earlier civilizations were faced with many obstacles. Among those obstacles were not
only technological obstacles, but social obstacles as well. In some cases,... Show more content on

If the planets did not align correctly, the four humours would become unbalanced and lead to an
ailment. The affected would then proceed to seek out ways to return the balance. Many doctors
of the Medieval Era referred to a Zodiac Chart to determine the positions of the planets, which
helped them determine whether or not to conduct blood letting. The four humors were associated
with an element: blood air, phlegm water, black bile earth, and yellow bile fire ( Medieval
Medicine ). When they would become unbalanced, medieval doctors would turn to various
methods to attempt to rebalance them. A common method was blood letting, which involved the
use of numerous leeches. However, they were not reluctant in using knives and other sharp
objects to get the job done (Trueman). The mindset behind this process was that blood letting
allowed for all the bad blood to leave the body. Conventionally, leeches were used to extract small
amounts of blood, while knives were used to extract large amounts. Another commonly scrutinized
bodily fluid was urine, which was examined quite frequently. They mostly focused on the color of
the urine sample and made conclusions depending on what the color was. The differences in color
was a direct result of humoral imbalances (Evans). Not only could doctors diagnose a patient s
ailment by analyzing one s urine in a practice called uroscopy, but they could also detect pregnancy.
Clear urine would signify virginity, while colors close to black, and a cloudy urine would signify
sexual impurity, thus possible pregnancy (Evans). All in all, while these fantastical influences had
no scientific, concrete backings, many believed these various concepts, which would later indirectly
stunt the growing influence concrete science would have on medicine. Luckily, this would not
discourage the medieval scientists who were hungry for knowledge and

Pear Tree Analysis
Emely Gonzalez
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
AP Literature Pd.3
Topic 3
All forms of life commence as a seed, hoping to grow into a mature tree with a solid foundation,
firm limbs, and distinctive leaves. In order to reach desired growth, one must be watered with the
earth s nutrients and acquire the sun s vital rays. These paramount provisions symbolize nurture,
independent or parental, and allows an individual to learn, experience, to flourish. The trunk of
the tree, our flows, links to the branches, our paths and experiences. The leaves are a series of
encounters with people or situations, and it illustrates the idea that we are constantly meeting
different individuals who leave little or great impact in our lives and we constantly go through
episodes that help define who we are. There is a frequency of these occurrences, they come and
go like the leaves do as the seasons change. Ultimately, a tree is a metaphor of life, one that ideally
depicts the journey of Janie, the protagonist in Their Eyes Were Watching Godby Zora Neale
Hurston. Throughout the novel, she is compared to a pear tree, and as it matures, she is struck with
the repercussions of poor decisions and the inevitability of change which begins to transform Janie
and disintegrate the tree. All trees possess their own flaws, meaning that every tree is one of kind.
Janie spent most of her time under a pear tree, which frequently presents itself throughout the novel.

Low-Voltage Current-Tmode Realization of Digital Logic...
Low Voltage Current Mode Realization of Digital Logic Gates using CMOS
In this paper a new technique is introduced for implementing the basic logic function by using
analog current mode techniques. By expanding the logic function in power series expression, and
using adder and sub tractor realization of the basic logic function is simplified. To illustrate the
proposed technique, a CMOS circuit for simultaneous realization of the logic function NOT, AND,
OR, NAND and XOR is considered. PSPICE simulation results, obtained with В±2V supply, are
included.

In an attempt to answer this question, the translinear principle (Gilbert, 1990) has been used to
realize a digital inverter circuit (Kemp, 1983, 1984) a bistable element (Seevinck, 1978) and NOT
/OR/NAND/XOR functions (M., 2003) . All the realizations of logic gates in current mode
reported in references (Kemp, 1983, 1984; Seevinck, 1978; M., 2003) use bipolar technology.
In this paper, we present such an approach, a low Voltage CMOS analog digital circuit in current
mode where it works with a supply voltage of VDD= VSS=2V. The circuit is based on the four
quadrant CMOS analog multiplier (Ali et al., 2009).
POWER SERIES REPRESENTATION OF LOGIC FUNCTIONS
Using their truth tables, it is easy to show that the input output relations of the basic digital logic
function can be expressed as (Enab and Zaki, 1993):
Z= 1 Ix (1)
for the NOT operation,
Z= Ix*Iy (2)
for the AND operation,
Z= Ix + Iy Ix*Iy (3)
for the OR operation,
Z= 1 Ix*Iy (4) for the NAND operation, and
Z= Ix + Iy 2Ix*Iy(5)
for the XOR operation.

Volatility Markets.
Introduction When the stock market goes up one day, and then goes down for the next five, then
up again, and then down again, that s what you call market volatility. Historically, the volatility of
the stock market is roughly 20% a year and 5.8% a month, but volatility keeps on changing, so we
go through periods of high volatility and low volatility. Analysts and experts have different opinions
about what you should do in volatile markets, and how to scope with stock marketvolatility or the
tendency for share prices rising and falling.

ounce then retreats. All the analysts and experts agrees and predicting that gold would continue
the bull market and reaches new highs. Doug Casey, the founder and chairman of Casey
Research, a provider of financial analysis about specific market verticals, including precious
metals, says, Gold could hit $5,000 an ounce in the next couple of years, as paper currencies in
the U.S, Europe, and Japan drop in value. Hal Lehr, the managing director of cross commodity
trading at Deutsche Bank, says Gold, which reached record on May2 2011, may surge a further
30 percent as investors seeks to protect themselves from economic uncertainty. John Paulson, the
founder and president of Paulson Co., Inc. a New York based hedge fund, predicted that gold
would reach $4,000 an ounce over the next three to five years, as the U.S and U.K flood the
money supply. Jim Sinclair, is a precious metals specialist and founder of JS Mindset, is predicting
that gold is targeting $5,000 as a long term objective.

Investors in volatility market should make no move waiting for the market to steady it self as
volatility doesn t change stocks valuations. Based on analyst s opinion most of them recommend

Business In Australi Business Analysis
Business is essential to any developed and developing society as it makes various contributions
to the economy and the progress of the society. In Australia, business is considered as a driving
force for social progress. There are currently 2.1 million businesses actively trading in Australia,
as of 2016. This is an increase of 2.4% from 2015. In the last couple of years, business entry rates
have increased from 13.4% to 14.6% while exit rates have decreased from 12.4% to 12.3%. This
shows that there has been business growth in Australia recently. At the moment, the industry
classification with the highest survival rate is Health Care and Social Assistance, which has a
survival rate of 74.2%. On the contrary, Accommodation and Food Services... Show more content

The first factor is the failure to react to changes in society or the marketplace. Many business
owners think that their success in the past will continue to work and help their business grow,
but in reality, society and demands change all the time, especially with the development of
technology. Failure to adapt to these changes will cause many businesses to become outdated
and lose to their competition. Another factor for failure is the inability to price a product or
service correctly. There are many examples of this, one including a business making a product
expensive for customers even though it isn t of high quality. This mistake will make businesses
lose their customer base and eventually fail. Another example is if a business tries to make a
high quality product, but also sell it for a cheap price. This will make the business lose money,
therefore narrowing its chances of achieving business success. Although there are many failure
factors, one important one that means the difference between a successful business and a failed
one is the lack of financial management. Good financial skills are needed in a business in order
to control and track the money that it earns and spends. An example of this failure factor is if a
business chooses to spend more money than it can earn, and also chooses to spend it on something
unproductive. This will cause the business to lose its money and fail. Overall, there are

Resident Assistant Motivation
What is your motivation for applying for the Resident Assistant position with Housing and Dining
Services? Coming to KSU as an incoming freshman, and starting potentially one of the biggest
steps of my life was nerve wracking. However, after being here for two months I can easily call
this place my second home. I currently live on the eighth floor of Moore Hall with some of the
greatest people on earth. In the short amount of time that we ve been together, my hall has thrived
and molded into, not just a community, but a family. A major component of having such a
successful, tight knit floor was having a motivated and passionate RA. Chantelle Simon is the

friendly environment in my hall. Having strong communication skills as a Resident Assistant is
vital to have a successful hall during the year. Having this quality allows the residents to hone a
deeper connection with their RA. Having a door open mindset throughout year creates an open

EE Cummings
E. E. Cummings s experimentation with form and language places him among the most innovative
of twentieth century poets. He developed a style so unique that his poetry was not fully appreciated
until after his death. Cummings experimented radically with form, punctuation, spelling and
syntax, abandoning traditional techniques and structures to create a new and unique style of poetic
expression. Like Charles Williams and many other poets of his time, Cummings expresses in his
poetryhis philosophical views of individualism and transcendentalism, and his criticism towards
society s intolerance of nonconformists. He particularly conveys his philosophy of individualism
and view of how we are all forced to conform in his poem s anyone lived... Show more content on

The form of the poem reflects the spontaneity that an individual can have within the restricted views
of mainstream society. The ungrammatical structure of the poem endorses Cummings views of
being a nonconformist, as he promotes that he does not need to abide by society s restrictions on
language and grammar in order to portray and write a story. Through his experimentation with
poetic form and language, Cummings is able to promote his philosophy on individualism in anyone
lived in a pretty how town .
In maggie and milly and molly and may , Cummings expresses and promotes his transcendentalist
philosophical views through the use of personification. In the second couplet of the poem,
Cummings introduces maggie, and she symbolizes the sweetly troubled one. When Maggie was in
a time of trouble, she turned to nature (the shell), as transcendentalists do, to find comfort. Maggie
not only finds nature, she also finds art in the form of music. The shell sings to her, personifying
the shell as a person who can sing. It is through the shell and its song that maggie loses her woes
and finds her inner self, hence conveying transcendentalism and individualism. Cummings used
personification in maggie and milly and molly and may to help promote his philosophical views of
transcendentalism and individualism.
A homophone was used in the end rhyme of maggie and milly and

The Right Of The Inventors With The Rights Of A Public
a)The patent system attempts to balance the right of the inventors with the rights of the public.
(A.Brewer) The purpose of this was to encourage scientific progress while rewarding inventors
the ownership of their ideas for a period of time and the right of the public to use these ideas to
create new inventions. An example of this is the HIV medication. Recently the CEO of Turing
Martin Shkreli, decided to increase the price of their life saving pill from $13.50 to $750 to
recuperate costs of research and development. Due to the patentfiled that prevents competitors
from replicating the drug, Mr. Shkreli was able to do this. However this large price hike has eft his
competitor scrambling to find an equally comparable drug now that... Show more content on

The America Invents Act has shifted the power of intellectual property towards large companies
who have the ability to file provisional patents before individual inventors or smaller companies can
file.
d)The obviousness contention of patents takes four primary concepts into consideration after
Graham et al. v. John Deere Co.: 1) the scope of the prior art, 2) the level of ordinary skill in the
art, 3) differences between the new inventions and prior art, 4)Evidence of not being obvious.
These contentions of obviousness have since been expanded by KSR v. Teleflex. This introduced
the idea of a person having ordinary skills in the arts. Subsequently this shifted the litmus test to if a
person with ordinary skill in the arts are given the elements of the invention would they be able to
replicate the invention without any help.
e)Provisional patents provide a party the ability to file first and allow the inventor a year to develop
the provisional patent to convert it to either a utility, plant or design patent. The content is never
disclosed which allows another parties to file on the same content without the first parties
knowledge. The provisional patents must detail the design of the invention and cannot simply be an
idea.

Motivation in leadership through Achievement Motivation Theory
MM3151 Managerial Leadership
Introduction
Motivation is the willingness to exert high levels of effort towards a goal, provided the effort
made also satisfied some individual need. (Keenan K., 1995, e.g. 60)
Everyone at least once asked themselves: What I am doing now? , Where will it bring me? , How
can it help me to reach my target? . These questions have always accompanied me and help to
understand what I want and what is my goal. We have a motivation from the childhood, for
example, to get sweets or toys: every child love candies, chocolates, toys, and parents motivate us
by saying: Study hard, get a high mark and I will buy you everything ... Show more content on

The Lovely Bones, Othello And Rebecca Is Adultery
is an affair, Susie explains and hints throughout the novel as to why Len has the affair If the case
was still open in his mind it was blank. There was nothing on the back of mine, there was nothing
on the back of his wives. Unlike Mrs Danvers and Iago, the reader can relate and sympathise with
Lens situation as seen in the quote with the repetition of Nothing connoting a need for true love,
making less of a Iago, Mrs Danvers antagonist and more of simply an obstacle with gets in the way
of a relationship. One similarity however between Len and Mrs Danvers is that they have both lost
the one that they loved, nonetheless in an attempt to cope with this they react in vastly different
ways, though both destructive and emotionally scaring.
Another hindrance of true love as seen in The Lovely Bones, Othello and Rebecca is adultery. Third
party characters are seen launching the plot and the act of adultery is seen driving the plot into
motion leading to the story s climax.
As we see in Othello, the women of Venice are portrayed in this era as sexually driven and
untrustworthy. For example William Davis (1614) describes them as Lude and wicked It is this
contextual knowledge that is the reason for the quick mistrust of Desdemona, unlike in Rebecca
for example when the consensus at the time was one of a pure and perfect woman especially in
Pre war England and the Angel in the house concept at its near conclusion but still in force. The

Target Market Of Pepsi
Target Market
To identify the target consumers, companies must divide the market into groups with distinct needs
and preferences before identifying which segment to target (Kotler Keller, 2017). The target
market for PepsiCo products is the population aged between 13 and 45 years. Since this population
mostly comprises of young people, Pepsi sells its products in restaurants, schools, colleges, fast food
stores, and other places that this target market frequents.
The segmentation of PepsiCo is as follows:
1.Geographic According to Kotler and Keller (2012), geographical segmentation involves dividing
the market into smaller geographical units like regions, states, nations or neighborhoods. For
PepsiCo, its market is not highly geographically segmented as people from any geographical unit
can purchase its products. The company markets and sells its products both domestically and
internationally through its six recognized segments or regions including: Frito Lay North America,
Quaker Foods North America, North America Beverages, Latin America, Europe and Sib Saharan
Africa, and Asia, Middle East and North Africa regions. While the company targets both urban and
rural areas, it makes more sales in big cities that are densely populated.
2.Demographic This divides the market on the basis of age, income, gender, income, occupation,
religion and other demographic factors. In terms of age, Pepsi s target market are the youth and
middle aged people within the age bracket of

Essay about Teaching Goals and Philosophy
Teaching Goals and Philosophy
Entering the field of education requires a person to take on many very important responsibilities.
Teachers play a very vital role in the lives and futures of many individuals. Through the perspective
of a teacher, many students come and go year after year. The names and faces of many students are
often forgotten as you enter and new year with new students, new faces, and new names. On the
other hand, although educators encounter many more students then students do educators, a teacher
has a much more substantial impact on the life of a student. Upon taking this into consideration, I

This child needs to be reassured that this is okay, everyone learns by different methods and at
different rates. For some students, encouragement is very important. For example, if a child is not
receiving the necessary encouragement from his or her parents to do well in school, then they may
not see the importance in it.
More time and attention should be given to those students who need it. Teachers should pay
attention to the special needs of their students and do whatever they can do to fulfill them. While
some students are more independent and seem to have no problems studying and progressing with
the material given to them, others need to be instructed and guided on a one on one basis by the
teacher at whatever pace suits them yet challenges them.
Also, agreeing with the Pragmatic method, I feel strongly about hands on approach to learning. I
think that students develop a fuller understanding of how things work when this approach is used. I
see methods such as experimentation and problem solving to be very beneficial; it promotes
interest and comprehension.
I also feel that a classroom should be a very comfortable, non threatening, and inviting environment.
Children shouldn t have to dread going to school, but should see it as an opportunity to better

Philip Zimbardo is known for his famous prison experiment that revealed some important facts
about human nature. This type of experiment had never been done before. The Stanford prison
experiment was designed to find out whether the brutality reported among guards in American
prisons was due to the sadistic personalities of the guards or had more to do with the prison
environment (McLeod 1). Zimbardo was influenced by the Milgram experiment, which was a study
of the power of the situation. He says that the Milgram experiment was focused on one on one
social power. Zimbardo s experiment was focused on institutional power over the individual in
groups due to the change of the environment. Zimbardo has written many books about social
psychology, which is the study of human behaviors and the social situation. I learned about
Zimbardo in my Psychology 100 class. He was born on March 23, 1933, and is still alive to this
day. His studies and experiments are what influenced me to go into the field of psychology.
Zimbardo is a crucial social psychologist because of his prison experiment, which led to unique
discoveries.
Zimbardo decided to conduct the prison experiment because of his interest in social psychology.
He was influenced by the milligram experiment that left a great impact on him as a person.
According to Zimbardo, he said that he wanted to expand on the Milgram s experiment and focus
less on power authority and obedience. The prison experiment mainly focused on the

Content Analysis Of The Media
There are numerous sources in which an individual can obtain information about current events
happening around the world; some produce content strictly on the pretense of political affiliation,
while others attempt to establish a more neutral footing, and others are simply more credible than
others. Only four examinations will be necessary to prove this, however: The New York Times,
the New York Post tabloid, the Richmond Times Dispatch, a local newspaper centered in Virginia,
and finally the Telegraph, a conservative leaning news source based in Britain. Each of these
sources provide an overwhelming amount of diversity on the issues they cover and the manner in
which they do so, format, and political ideology within their editorials and... Show more content on

The New York Times was perhaps the most diverse of the four examples provided here. Their
stories covered issues happening all around the globe; such as the earth quake which just hit
Mexico, hurricane Maria, the United Nations Council meeting, North Korea, and most notably
Donald Trump. The New York Post however, was more geared towards the casual reader
covering topics such as celebrity gossip in the U.S. and occasionally a political issue here and
there. The Telegraph focused mainly on issues in England, especially the problems Parliament is
facing with the Brexit decision and internal conflicts between members Theresa May and Boris
Johnson. The Richmond Times Dispatch was circulating many articles concerning the removal of
Confederate monuments as it is a pressing issue for many people residing in the Southern states
of the U.S. Other articles were very focused on issues Virginian s were facing. Specific articles
that had been written by the reporters of each website varied, especially in contrast with work
done by the New York Post. The New York Times in discussing Trump on his statements made at
the UN council meeting were not followed with words of praise or condemnation, but rather felt
factual and focused on informing rather than convincing. However, in a article written by the New
York Post concerning a Trump Victory Dinner to be hosted in New York, albeit short, had subtle
discontent with the actions of the president ensuring to note that he rarely

Always Choose Right Accountants to Boost Your Business
Choosing and using the right accountant or accountancy company for your business, whether it is
large or small, can be an important decision. Few people recognize that just about anyone can
arrange themselves up running a business and advertise and label themselves as an accountant.
Below are a few key factors you should think about when deciding which accountant to hire if you
are the UK structured:

things is a great asset for you as well as your business organization. You will see however cases
where your accountant must tell you that you will be doing something amiss or there is something
that you ll require to address. When you have mutual esteem for the other person this process is a
lot easier. Understand that your accountant is wonderful for you in your team and is wanting to

Technology
Once after a period, all accounts were done yourself in ledgers. Nowadays this is nearly unusual.
Also nowadays it is regular to find that lots of companies could keep their accounts on relatively
easy to make use of the software. What you ought to check however is that your accountancy
company can acknowledge the electronic documents to their system. Also, if they require the data
by using a proprietor software system is this heading to entail you buying the program to be

popular. There are also systems that enable you to store copies of your articles on remote machines

Halo Vs Call Of Duty Essay
Ah, video game debates, a wonderful thing when 2 gamers bond over videos games. which is
better? Which is worse? Its all fun talk until people bring up call of duty vs Halo.
The Call of Duty series vs the Halo series. People often argue that call of duty is better than halo
which is 100% false. Halo is a lot better than call of duty because call of duty makes the same game
over and over and people buy it because is the new call of duty. Thing is the company and
publisher that owns call of duty only makes it because of the money which they have stated
before and people who are into video games dislike that because it shows they do not care about the

played that game for 3 years straight and its replayability is so great that you just can t get bored
while playing it. Call of duty 1 was absolutely terrible as the same goes for the two that follow,

Loopy Lydia Diary
Short story
Seven days ago, something awful happened. I m only writing this diary entry as I need to get my
anger and frustration out some way. The guilt inside me is eating me alive it s growing and

begin to make sense.
I hated the man with a passion, the mere thought of him made me sick to my stomach. You could
say that I haven t been the same since that day. I hardly eat and I like to keep to myself. The girls
in my school call me loopy Lydia. It s only because I don t speak in class and I prefer to draw then
speak. People think I don t understand, what they say, they think I m crazy when in actual fact I
can understand. They say that I have pale, lifeless eyes and that I seem like I m in catatonic state
but if only they knew. My mum knows and I hate that she knows. She had the power to do
something to stop it, to stop that disgusting act. But she didn t, she stood there and watched. She
cried and watched but she didn t stop him. She sat in the corner while it all happened. For 8 years

down her cheeks. I remember her cradling him and whispering he same five words: Where did we

British Colonization Of India Essay
Historical Context and Background
British involvement on the Indian subcontinent began early in the 17th Century through the British
East India Company and its business ventures and dealings. The early British Empire was
composed of several self governing colonies which had been settled in by British civilians, and
colonial policy was one of salutary neglect (Brown 2010). It is not unfair to say that Britain s
relationship with India was one of political subordination, but economic exploitation formed the
core of this relationship. The colonisation of India by the British Empire was clearly geared to
benefit the mother country, even at the cost of the colony (Modern India 2010).
Colonial exploitation was carried out through three distinct phases over time. The first phase of
mercantilism, which took place between 1757 and 1813, was one of direct plunder in which
surplus Indian revenues were used to buy Indian finished goods to be exported back to Britain
(Modern India 2010). In the second phase, from 1813 to 1858, India was converted into a source
of raw material and a market for British goods. The third and final phase from 1858 onwards, was
one of finance imperialism in which British capital began to control Indian banks, foreign trading
firms and managing agencies in India. This phased exploitation was carried out through a range of
economic policies, primarily in the industrial and agricultural sectors of the colonial economy of
India (Modern History 2010).

The workers were unhappy with the fact that their wages were decreasing and their rents weren t

was written by an actual Pullman Striker at that time, it s a primary source. Writing this was a way
to channel their frustration and their reasons on why they decided to go on a strike. This statement
does contain biases because it was written to inform others on their melancholy daily lives as

Without Visible Permanent Deformation Of A New Guardrail
without visible permanent deformation. This load requirement is applied at any point
distributed over 50 millimeters from any direction. Also, if the guardrail is a flexible barrier
such as chain or cable than it should not deflect from the minimum force or 1,000 Newtons as
well. This load is applied more than 80 millimeters from the normal undeflected position of the
flexible barrier. Also, the standards state that fixed guardrails can be replaced by retractable
guardrails or handrails or handholds to make transporting from jobsite to jobsite easier
(Standardization, 2011). These standards give the team a specific set of dimension and load
constraints for the design of a new guardrail. The dimensions of the guardrail the team is designing
shouldn t be much different than the current design. The team believes the load requirement will
be the biggest requirement to meet, since the current design is failing from vibration loads. This
set of standards states that the replacement of a fixed guardrail for a retractable guardrail is
allowed. This states that the purpose of the project follows the international standards; the only
difference is the project is called a collapsible guardrail. Expected Results/ Outcome Expectations
Determining how a project will turn out is somewhat puzzling when looking at the big picture.
When doing a project this extensive, it is key to have a detailed plan and good communication.
Without this, the project will more than likely fail.

Self-Torture In Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven
The mind is an exceptionally fragile thing, when off kilter it can fabricate many ideas and
feelings. Many writers believe that there is no death more poetic than that of a beautiful young
woman leaving behind her grieving lover. In the 1845 poem, The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe explores
the psychological madness that comes with trying to escape the curse of time. Poe uses repetition
to uncover character instability, illustrate self torture, and the loss of self that is fearfully avoided
and yet eagerly sought for.
Poe is well known for his suspenseful stories, but attention is seldom drawn to the psychological
nature of them. In, Philosophy of Composition, Poe made it clear that he wanted to have an effect

Viking Stereotypes
Viking Paragraphs
Raider (violent): Since the Vikings weren t historically proven to wear the armour we portray in
pop culture, what did the common Viking battle armour consist of or look like?
In today s pop culture, we represent Vikings as bloodthirsty warriors of great savagery, bearing
horned helmets with layers of animal hides draped over their colossal bodies. Of course, they
were commendable warriors but not all of these fan favorite TV shows and movies were
necessarily factual in all aspects. During Viking times, hand to hand combat was the only way to
achieve victory and gunpowder was just pure fiction. The weaponry used was primarily axes,
bows and arrows, spears, and swords. This made substantial armour absolutely fundamental for
battle successions. Their authentic armour was quite contrary to our modern beliefs. Unlike the
common artistic portrayal, Vikings never wore horned helmets and instead bore coned shaped
helmets made from leather. Raiders wore armour made from thick layers of animal hide which
sometimes had bones sewn in for added stability. It was also believed that weapon inventory was
used to base Vikings social standing.
During their time, weapons cost an arm and a leg to produce so only the wealthiest of kings had a
fully stocked armoury while the poor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

In here, corruption can be defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain where, there are
many forms of corruption that Transparency International fight against (Transparency International,
2015). Through the anti corruption glossary there are 3 types of corruption, which are:
Grand Corruption: acts committed at a high level of government that distort policies, enabling
leader to benefit at the expense of the public good.
Petty Corruption: acts of everyday abuse of entrusted power by mid level and low public officials
during their interaction with the ordinary citizens, usually in public places like hospital, schools
and other agencies.
Political Corruption: Acts of manipulating policies, rules of procedure and institutions in the
allocation of resources, which abuse their position to sustain power, status and wealth.
This three acts of corruption have a huge negative impacts on the society, it can cost people s live,

their trust in the political system as well as environmental degradation. Therefore, due to its high

Essay about Comparing Oceania in 1984 and the USA
Comparing Oceania in 1984 and the USA
This paper will discuss the similarities and differences between the Oceanic society of Orwell s
Nineteen Eighty Four and the society of the United States. First I will talk about the similarities
and then I will finish off with the differences, all of which will be based on factual information that
I have gathered both, from the book and the mainstream media. Then I will finish by coming to a
conclusion to an opinion I have and whether the government systems are more similar or different.
In order to do so, I had to ask myself some important questions like: Is the telescreen in the book
the same as the cameras at work watching us or the satellites the government has in space that can
see you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These people, for whom the government really does not care, are seen as a burden.
The overall conclusion to this statement is that the classes are divided with different opportunities
and even though not as much as the government officials in the book, the upper classes still have
more freedom to excel and do as they please.
The second similarity is that both governments believe that ?War is Peace.? We saw in the book
that the government of Oceania believed that the only way to have peace was through war and
strength. They would at one time be peaceful with one of the two other two countries in the
world, Eurasia or Eastasia, while waging war against the other. The government would also use
excuses on why they were waging war. The same is here in The United States. We went to Iraq
for reasons that some feel were not justified while others feel differently. The main argument of
the opposition was that we went to war with Iraq on the basis that they had weapons of mass
destruction and so forth but non were found. The question that I want to ask is: Were we lied to as
the people in Oceania were?
The third similarity is that both governments have their hands and control in every aspect of
society?s life. Also the government spies on their citizens. In the book we saw Oceania had
absolute control over people?s life. Even though the control that the United State government has
over people?s lives these days is not as great as the one in the book, they still interfere

Tiananmen Gate By Takashi Murakami
Visual art and culture has been known to recycle elements from the past to construct new artistic
traditions. Traditional and historical elements such as images and symbols may be taken from their
original context to create a new visual culture, resulting in a reinvention of the element s purpose,
function, and meaning. Through case studies of Tiananmen Gate, Takashi Murakami s art, and
Dongdaemun Design Park and Plaza, it will be demonstrated that aspects of tradition and historyare
often used during the creation of modern visual cultureand art in Asia to establish a positive
(powerful, innocent, modern etc.) image of the state. Tiananmen Gate was originally a part of a
group of gates that served as formal entrance[s] to a number of subcities . Emphasis on gates and
walls in dynastic China was a manifestation of the belief that power could be maintained only by
keeping it secret . Gates and walls were therefore made to conceal the emperor and to prevent
outsiders from accessing power. The multiple layers of walls and gates of imperial Beijing
produced a visually dominating effect which emphasized the grand authority of the emperor while

Greatest Scientific Discoveries
Antibiotics Antibiotics transformed medicine. The discovery of antibiotics began by accident.
On the morning of September 3rd, 1928, Professor Alexander Fleming was having a clear up of
his cluttered laboratory. Fleming was sorting through a number of glass plates which had
previously been coated with staphyloccus bacteria as part of research Fleming was doing. One of
the plates had mould on it. The mould was in the shape of a ring and the area around the ring
seemed to be free of the bacteria staphyloccus. Further research on the mould found that it could
kill other bacteria and that it could be given to small animals without any side effects. However,
within a year, Fleming had moved onto other medical issues and it was ten years later... Show more

They wanted to devise an inter networking system (or internet) whereby different networks could
talk to one another. Arpanet devised TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).
This was a set of rules for communication between networks. The Internet became a network of
networks. Only the military stayed outside of this for security reasons. In 1988, there were
50,000 computers attached to the Internet. By 1991, there were 1 million. However, it was
difficult to access the information contained on the Internet as the system had little organisation.
This problem was solved by Tim Berners Lee, a British scientist studying at a research facility in
Switzerland. He invented a method of organising information which he called the world wide
web (www). His system linked documents from different sources and guided users to related
information. The www was first used by the public in 1991 and it allowed the transfer of text,
sound, images and video clips. Above all else, it was simple to use. In 1998, 130 million people
were using the Internet and the figure continues to grow annually. The Jet Engine Sir Frank
Whittle s jet engine transformed travel. The jet engine has allowed millions of people now to do
something that was barely thinkable just 70 years ago crossing the Atlantic at speed. The Wright s

Sir Frank Whittle. In 1937 he

The Use of Horizontal and Vertical Integration by Carnegie...
The use of horizontal and vertical integration by Carnegie in the industrialization period
Throughout history many people used unfair ways to improve their lives over others. In the late
18th century and early 19th century the use of vertical integration became more popular and used
by large business owners. Vertical integration is when a company attempts to own all parts of the
business by owning every piece that goes into the product being created. One large business owner
who was a robber baron and particularly used vertical integration was Andrew Carnegie. He used
these tactics as a way to improve his business and wealth. Under the table deals, allowed

The use of vertical integration by Carnegie was taking business away from other industries who
needed citizens and companies to purchase their product. Carnegie became more popular and
people started to buy his steel over others which had a negative effect on society as a whole
while only improving his earnings and taking from other industries. Along with using vertical
integration negatively, Carnegie was a robber baron. A robber baron is a business owner who
tends to use ruthful tactics to gain more wealth. Carnegie Steel and many other business
enterprises had people working for them in harsh conditions that were unsafe and unsanitary.
Along with getting low pay, the workers were also forced to work 7 days a week for
unbelievable hours. Carnegie s factories were unsanitary, poorly ventilated and the employees
were underpaid and overworked in unsafe environments. Overall, Carnegie abused his power of
wealth to overrule his employees and used vertical integration to take from other industries, but
without doing so he would not be as successful as he was. If Carnegie wanted to be a successful
business leader, he would have to do whatever it took to improve his company without breaking
the law. In the late 18th century and early 19th century, there were no laws on how workers should
be treated, wage laws or how sanitary factories must be showing that Carnegie was not the only
business owner treating his employees as he did.

Greek Mythology Influence On Romeo And Juliet
Greek mythology consists of all the cultural stories (legends and myths) that were told and passed
on by the people of ancient Greece ( Greek Mythology 2017).
These myths had many morals and everyday lessons that could be learned ( Greek Mythology
2017).
These stories have ultimately become the basis of Greek culture as well as religion ( Greek
Mythology 2017).
These myths were first developed in a visual form, because only the elders knew how to read and
write, they passed these stories down to the next generation in an oral form ( Greek Mythology
2017). Roman mythology is the compilation of legendary stories that played a major role in the
formation of religion in Rome (Roman Mythology 2017).
The Roman gods, goddesses, pagans, and important individuals were featured in these stories (

Living In Rural Kansas
Breanna Prater Rural Voices of America Essay

Home Is Where The Heart Is
I will forever remember my fourth grade choir class. We went to the Kansas State Capitol and
sang Home on the Range for the Senators, Represenatatives, and anyone who happened to be
passing by. These infamous words of Brewster Higley stick out in my mind when I read our
writing prompt; what are the benefits of living in rural Kansas? What are the benefits of living on
See if you can use a synonym to seemingly increase your vocabulary our Home on the Range? A

And it is because we are taught this common sense, that rural individuals of all ages are often some
of the best people to be around. Because they understand how things work, and that what goes
around comes around. This ties directly with the down to earth perspective that rural Kansas offers.
Just exactly what is a down to earth perspective? A layman definition of a down to earth
perspective is seeing the world as it really is. You do not need to embellish it, or pretend that the
world is something that it is not. With a down to earth perspective you see the world, and in it,
you see truth. It is a second instinct of most Kanasans to develope a down to earth perspective,
because there is earth all around us. Farmers work in and with the earth to reap a bountiful harvest.
Because of this, they have a realistic perspective on the world, and see how nature works firsthand.
This ripples out to those around them. Rural Kansas is a farming community, and life lessons that

Analysis Of Nino Ricci s Lives Of The Saints
In Nino Ricci s Lives of the Saints, Vittorio s grandfather, Lu Podesta, has a high reputation as
the mayor of Valle del Sole. He behaves like a holy catholic like everyone else, especially he sits

Firstly, he resigns as a mayor for saving his own daughter. Last but not least, he isolated himself
from the village including his family.
First of all, Lu Podesta resigns from mayor because his daughter is being accused of having an

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27, 1902. He studied marine

his story The Grapes of Wrath to encompass many themes and ideas. To help enforce his message
Steinbeck included several Biblical allusions. John Steinbeck uses Biblical allusions to create the
theme that strength to survive comes from faith by using characters and events. Steinbeck creates
the theme of the novel by alluding the characters in his story to characters in the Bible. Jim Casy is

Examples Of Sympathy For The Monster In Frankenstein
Owen E. Ashley
Instructor Toni J. Weeden

Sympathy for the Monster
I feel sympathetic for the creature on many occasions in the fiction novel Frankenstein by Mary
Shelley. Frankenstein has brought something to life that he cannot even look at without being
horrified. I believe it was wrong that Frankenstein played God and created something he didn t
understand. Once you are finished with this essay I believe you will agree with me.
In chapter 15 there are many times the reader feels sympathy for the monster.
As I read, however, I applied much personally to my own feelings and condition, I found myself
similar yet at the same time strangely unlike to the beings concerning whom I read and to whose
conversation I was a listener. I sympathized with and partly understood them, but I was unformed
in mind; I was dependent on none and related to none. The path of my departure was free, and
there was none to lament my annihilation. My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What
did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come? What was my destination? These
questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them. (Shelley 109)
Although this quote is quite long, it embodies many of the sympathies readers have with the
creature. The creature has many questions that cannot be answered because Victor abandoned him
after being created. The creature learns through reading books ... Show more content on

Mark Twain s Cone-Pone Opinions
According to Webster Dictionary, conformity is defined as, in compliance of rules, laws, or
standards. Mark Twain s, Cone pone Opinions, demonstrates how society reacts to new
conformities; individuals eventually conform to popular ideas and inevitably abandon these ideas
for something greater. Twain states, It is our nature to conform; it is force which not many can
successfully resist. (Twain 2). The reason people conform is not for self approval, but rather, for
the approval of others. In his essay, Twain discusses the flaring hoopskirt and how individuals were
appalled at first. Six months later, everyone admires hoopskirts and no one laughs anymore.
However, the hoopskirt has disappeared in the same way. One woman who abandoned this fashion
influenced others to abandon it as well. This demonstrates that society establishes habits, fashions,
and trends only to please others and will abandon those same habits, fashions, and trends to again
please others. Therefore, the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

are all too weak and tame to touch the military minded. (James 51). Furthermore, James adds that
peace cannot be sought unless we maintain some military discipline. ...I do not believe that peace
either ought to be or will be permanent on this globe, unless the states pacifically organized

cannot be a simple pleasure economy. (53). Thus, humans need an equal balance of peace and war

Science Fiction And Cultural Values
Science Fiction and Cultural Values
Introduction
Science fiction is a genre of creative writing which has stories that are connected with the future of
technology and science. This style of writing is often seen in graphic novels, fiction novels,
television series, and in film. Some common portrayals of science fiction include time and space
travel. At times, these stories feature life that is found on other planets apart from Earth. The tales
are usually based on new technologies, different social systems and scientific discoveries. Science
fiction may seem to be a fantasy because the technologies involved sometimes look unrealistic.
However, that fantasy becomes a reality when it changes how people view their daily lives.
History of science fiction
Philosophical stories and texts from centuries ago have some imagery that relates back to
science fiction. The stories imply that, even then, they predicted advances in science in future
years to come. Religious poems and stories that talk about the creation or demolition of the
universe have some elements that are like the elements of Science fiction. The powers used by
science fiction can be associated with those of the gods during and before biblical times. An
example of an old philosophical text which can be associated with science fiction is Plato s The
Republic . The topics and adventures discussed in the text are viewed as a fantasy and do not seem
practical in real life because they cannot be experienced using normal

(NBC) Each documentary style episode portrays different situations in the workplace. In episode
fifteen of season two called Boys and Girls focuses on a common problem in the workplace,
gender gaps. Gender and different minority s issues have been a problem in the business industry
for many years. Women are treated differently for many reasons such as stereotypes and
perceptions. (Modaff, Butler, Dewine, 2012) In the boys and girls episode a women s seminar is
being held in the office. First, I will be talking about the behaviors presented in the seminar. The
women were circled around a conference room, all calmly listening to Jan, One of the women

confidence building. The seminar in The Office episode was not the best example of a women s

Florence Nightingale Contributions To Nursing
Florence Nightingale is best known for her contributions to nursing, but she is also recognized
for her contributions to data analysis and graphical representation of data. She was born in
Florence, Italy and died in Mayfair, London, United Kingdom. Her lifespan was May 12, 1820
to August 13, 1910. She was born into a well off merchant family and had one older sibling.
Despite her mother s upwardly social tendencies Florence herself, was more awkward socially.
During her lifetime there were a number of wars and revolutions across Europe. Additionally,
women were not seen as the equal to men and did not have the right to vote. Nightingale was
unique in her social class as instead of focusing on keeping house and getting married, she instead
pursued education and progressed in the field of nursing. When Nightingale was in her teens she
was interested in mathematics and it was also clear that nursing was her calling (Biography.com
Editors, 2017). In 1840, Nightingale begged her parents to let her study mathematics instead of
more feminine pursuits such as sewing and dance lessons. Her initial preference was to study
mathematics, even though ladies of her social standing did not formally pursue that field of study,
so ultimately her parents allowed her to study mathematics with tutors. Nightingale passed her
learning onto other children through tutoring. One of the tenets she followed was that of Socrates
to ask questions of what she and her students were learning

  • 2. Medicine In The Medieval Era The study of medicine stretches as far back as can be remembered and has been an integral area of study in every society and civilization throughout history. Medicine is constantly improving and being innovated, making the treatment of various diseases and ailments easier and easier. However, in the early millennia, the rate at which medicinewas being improved and innovated was not as rapid as it is today. The physicians and doctors of the time were not as skilled as the medical professionals in the present era. Lacking the technology and knowledge people have today, the people in earlier civilizations were faced with many obstacles. Among those obstacles were not only technological obstacles, but social obstacles as well. In some cases,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the planets did not align correctly, the four humours would become unbalanced and lead to an ailment. The affected would then proceed to seek out ways to return the balance. Many doctors of the Medieval Era referred to a Zodiac Chart to determine the positions of the planets, which helped them determine whether or not to conduct blood letting. The four humors were associated with an element: blood air, phlegm water, black bile earth, and yellow bile fire ( Medieval Medicine ). When they would become unbalanced, medieval doctors would turn to various methods to attempt to rebalance them. A common method was blood letting, which involved the use of numerous leeches. However, they were not reluctant in using knives and other sharp objects to get the job done (Trueman). The mindset behind this process was that blood letting allowed for all the bad blood to leave the body. Conventionally, leeches were used to extract small amounts of blood, while knives were used to extract large amounts. Another commonly scrutinized bodily fluid was urine, which was examined quite frequently. They mostly focused on the color of the urine sample and made conclusions depending on what the color was. The differences in color was a direct result of humoral imbalances (Evans). Not only could doctors diagnose a patient s ailment by analyzing one s urine in a practice called uroscopy, but they could also detect pregnancy. Clear urine would signify virginity, while colors close to black, and a cloudy urine would signify sexual impurity, thus possible pregnancy (Evans). All in all, while these fantastical influences had no scientific, concrete backings, many believed these various concepts, which would later indirectly stunt the growing influence concrete science would have on medicine. Luckily, this would not discourage the medieval scientists who were hungry for knowledge and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pear Tree Analysis Emely Gonzalez Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston AP Literature Pd.3 Topic 3 All forms of life commence as a seed, hoping to grow into a mature tree with a solid foundation, firm limbs, and distinctive leaves. In order to reach desired growth, one must be watered with the earth s nutrients and acquire the sun s vital rays. These paramount provisions symbolize nurture, independent or parental, and allows an individual to learn, experience, to flourish. The trunk of the tree, our flows, links to the branches, our paths and experiences. The leaves are a series of encounters with people or situations, and it illustrates the idea that we are constantly meeting different individuals who leave little or great impact in our lives and we constantly go through episodes that help define who we are. There is a frequency of these occurrences, they come and go like the leaves do as the seasons change. Ultimately, a tree is a metaphor of life, one that ideally depicts the journey of Janie, the protagonist in Their Eyes Were Watching Godby Zora Neale Hurston. Throughout the novel, she is compared to a pear tree, and as it matures, she is struck with the repercussions of poor decisions and the inevitability of change which begins to transform Janie and disintegrate the tree. All trees possess their own flaws, meaning that every tree is one of kind. Janie spent most of her time under a pear tree, which frequently presents itself throughout the novel. It ... • 4. Low-Voltage Current-Tmode Realization of Digital Logic... Low Voltage Current Mode Realization of Digital Logic Gates using CMOS In this paper a new technique is introduced for implementing the basic logic function by using analog current mode techniques. By expanding the logic function in power series expression, and using adder and sub tractor realization of the basic logic function is simplified. To illustrate the proposed technique, a CMOS circuit for simultaneous realization of the logic function NOT, AND, OR, NAND and XOR is considered. PSPICE simulation results, obtained with В±2V supply, are included. Key Word: Current Mirror; CMOS analog multiplier; Current mode; Translinear principle; Digital logic circuits; INTRODUCTION The current mode implementation of logic gates is a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an attempt to answer this question, the translinear principle (Gilbert, 1990) has been used to realize a digital inverter circuit (Kemp, 1983, 1984) a bistable element (Seevinck, 1978) and NOT /OR/NAND/XOR functions (M., 2003) . All the realizations of logic gates in current mode reported in references (Kemp, 1983, 1984; Seevinck, 1978; M., 2003) use bipolar technology. In this paper, we present such an approach, a low Voltage CMOS analog digital circuit in current mode where it works with a supply voltage of VDD= VSS=2V. The circuit is based on the four quadrant CMOS analog multiplier (Ali et al., 2009). POWER SERIES REPRESENTATION OF LOGIC FUNCTIONS Using their truth tables, it is easy to show that the input output relations of the basic digital logic function can be expressed as (Enab and Zaki, 1993): Z= 1 Ix (1) for the NOT operation, Z= Ix*Iy (2) for the AND operation, Z= Ix + Iy Ix*Iy (3) for the OR operation, Z= 1 Ix*Iy (4) for the NAND operation, and Z= Ix + Iy 2Ix*Iy(5)

Historically, the volatility of the stock market is roughly 20% a year and 5.8% a month, but volatility keeps on changing, so we go through periods of high volatility and low volatility. Analysts and experts have different opinions about what you should do in volatile markets, and how to scope with stock marketvolatility or the tendency for share prices rising and falling. Analysts. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first factor is the failure to react to changes in society or the marketplace. Many business owners think that their success in the past will continue to work and help their business grow, but in reality, society and demands change all the time, especially with the development of technology. Failure to adapt to these changes will cause many businesses to become outdated and lose to their competition. Another factor for failure is the inability to price a product or service correctly. There are many examples of this, one including a business making a product expensive for customers even though it isn t of high quality. This mistake will make businesses lose their customer base and eventually fail. Another example is if a business tries to make a high quality product, but also sell it for a cheap price. This will make the business lose money, therefore narrowing its chances of achieving business success. Although there are many failure factors, one important one that means the difference between a successful business and a failed one is the lack of financial management. Good financial skills are needed in a business in order to control and track the money that it earns and spends. An example of this failure factor is if a business chooses to spend more money than it can earn, and also chooses to spend it on something unproductive. This will cause the business to lose its money and fail. Overall, there are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. EE Cummings E. E. Cummings s experimentation with form and language places him among the most innovative of twentieth century poets. He developed a style so unique that his poetry was not fully appreciated until after his death. Cummings experimented radically with form, punctuation, spelling and syntax, abandoning traditional techniques and structures to create a new and unique style of poetic expression. Like Charles Williams and many other poets of his time, Cummings expresses in his poetryhis philosophical views of individualism and transcendentalism, and his criticism towards society s intolerance of nonconformists. The form of the poem reflects the spontaneity that an individual can have within the restricted views of mainstream society. The ungrammatical structure of the poem endorses Cummings views of being a nonconformist, as he promotes that he does not need to abide by society s restrictions on language and grammar in order to portray and write a story. Through his experimentation with poetic form and language, Cummings is able to promote his philosophy on individualism in anyone lived in a pretty how town . In maggie and milly and molly and may , Cummings expresses and promotes his transcendentalist philosophical views through the use of personification. In the second couplet of the poem, Cummings introduces maggie, and she symbolizes the sweetly troubled one. When Maggie was in a time of trouble, she turned to nature (the shell), as transcendentalists do, to find comfort. Maggie not only finds nature, she also finds art in the form of music. The shell sings to her, personifying the shell as a person who can sing. It is through the shell and its song that maggie loses her woes and finds her inner self, hence conveying transcendentalism and individualism. Cummings used personification in maggie and milly and molly and may to help promote his philosophical views of transcendentalism and individualism. A homophone was used in the end rhyme of maggie and milly and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Right Of The Inventors With The Rights Of A Public a)The patent system attempts to balance the right of the inventors with the rights of the public. (A.Brewer) The purpose of this was to encourage scientific progress while rewarding inventors the ownership of their ideas for a period of time and the right of the public to use these ideas to create new inventions. An example of this is the HIV medication. Recently the CEO of Turing Martin Shkreli, decided to increase the price of their life saving pill from $13.50 to $750 to recuperate costs of research and development. Due to the patentfiled that prevents competitors from replicating the drug, Mr. Shkreli was able to do this. The America Invents Act has shifted the power of intellectual property towards large companies who have the ability to file provisional patents before individual inventors or smaller companies can file. d)The obviousness contention of patents takes four primary concepts into consideration after Graham et al. v. John Deere Co.: 1) the scope of the prior art, 2) the level of ordinary skill in the art, 3) differences between the new inventions and prior art, 4)Evidence of not being obvious. These contentions of obviousness have since been expanded by KSR v. Teleflex. This introduced the idea of a person having ordinary skills in the arts. Subsequently this shifted the litmus test to if a person with ordinary skill in the arts are given the elements of the invention would they be able to replicate the invention without any help. e)Provisional patents provide a party the ability to file first and allow the inventor a year to develop the provisional patent to convert it to either a utility, plant or design patent. The content is never disclosed which allows another parties to file on the same content without the first parties knowledge. Unlike Mrs Danvers and Iago, the reader can relate and sympathise with Lens situation as seen in the quote with the repetition of Nothing connoting a need for true love, making less of a Iago, Mrs Danvers antagonist and more of simply an obstacle with gets in the way of a relationship. One similarity however between Len and Mrs Danvers is that they have both lost the one that they loved, nonetheless in an attempt to cope with this they react in vastly different ways, though both destructive and emotionally scaring. Another hindrance of true love as seen in The Lovely Bones, Othello and Rebecca is adultery. More time and attention should be given to those students who need it. Teachers should pay attention to the special needs of their students and do whatever they can do to fulfill them. This type of experiment had never been done before. The Stanford prison experiment was designed to find out whether the brutality reported among guards in American prisons was due to the sadistic personalities of the guards or had more to do with the prison environment (McLeod 1). Zimbardo was influenced by the Milgram experiment, which was a study of the power of the situation. He says that the Milgram experiment was focused on one on one social power. Zimbardo s experiment was focused on institutional power over the individual in groups due to the change of the environment. Zimbardo has written many books about social psychology, which is the study of human behaviors and the social situation. I learned about Zimbardo in my Psychology 100 class. He was born on March 23, 1933, and is still alive to this day. His studies and experiments are what influenced me to go into the field of psychology. • 29. British Colonization Of India Essay Historical Context and Background British involvement on the Indian subcontinent began early in the 17th Century through the British East India Company and its business ventures and dealings. The early British Empire was composed of several self governing colonies which had been settled in by British civilians, and colonial policy was one of salutary neglect (Brown 2010). It is not unfair to say that Britain s relationship with India was one of political subordination, but economic exploitation formed the core of this relationship. The colonisation of India by the British Empire was clearly geared to benefit the mother country, even at the cost of the colony (Modern India 2010). Colonial exploitation was carried out through three distinct phases over time. The first phase of mercantilism, which took place between 1757 and 1813, was one of direct plunder in which surplus Indian revenues were used to buy Indian finished goods to be exported back to Britain (Modern India 2010). In the second phase, from 1813 to 1858, India was converted into a source of raw material and a market for British goods. The third and final phase from 1858 onwards, was one of finance imperialism in which British capital began to control Indian banks, foreign trading firms and managing agencies in India. This phased exploitation was carried out through a range of economic policies, primarily in the industrial and agricultural sectors of the colonial economy of India (Modern History 2010). As ... This load requirement is applied at any point distributed over 50 millimeters from any direction. Also, if the guardrail is a flexible barrier such as chain or cable than it should not deflect from the minimum force or 1,000 Newtons as well. This load is applied more than 80 millimeters from the normal undeflected position of the flexible barrier. Also, the standards state that fixed guardrails can be replaced by retractable guardrails or handrails or handholds to make transporting from jobsite to jobsite easier (Standardization, 2011). These standards give the team a specific set of dimension and load constraints for the design of a new guardrail. The dimensions of the guardrail the team is designing shouldn t be much different than the current design. The team believes the load requirement will be the biggest requirement to meet, since the current design is failing from vibration loads. This set of standards states that the replacement of a fixed guardrail for a retractable guardrail is allowed. This states that the purpose of the project follows the international standards; the only difference is the project is called a collapsible guardrail. Many writers believe that there is no death more poetic than that of a beautiful young woman leaving behind her grieving lover. In the 1845 poem, The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe explores the psychological madness that comes with trying to escape the curse of time. Poe uses repetition to uncover character instability, illustrate self torture, and the loss of self that is fearfully avoided and yet eagerly sought for. Poe is well known for his suspenseful stories, but attention is seldom drawn to the psychological nature of them. Critical theory , in terms of literature, can be defined as a form of criticism through the close reading of a text and the application of knowledge acquired from the study of the humanities. The multiple readings mentioned in the question refers to the different schools of literary criticism for example, structuralism, feminist theory, new historicism/cultural materialism, ecocriticism and postcolonial criticism. It is true to say that Wordsworth s I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud can be read and interpreted in many different ways, especially when both the original and revised versions of the poem are taken into account. • 34. Viking Stereotypes Viking Paragraphs Raider (violent): Since the Vikings weren t historically proven to wear the armour we portray in pop culture, what did the common Viking battle armour consist of or look like? In today s pop culture, we represent Vikings as bloodthirsty warriors of great savagery, bearing horned helmets with layers of animal hides draped over their colossal bodies. Of course, they were commendable warriors but not all of these fan favorite TV shows and movies were necessarily factual in all aspects. During Viking times, hand to hand combat was the only way to achieve victory and gunpowder was just pure fiction. The weaponry used was primarily axes, bows and arrows, spears, and swords. This made substantial armour absolutely fundamental for battle successions. Their authentic armour was quite contrary to our modern beliefs. Unlike the common artistic portrayal, Vikings never wore horned helmets and instead bore coned shaped helmets made from leather. Raiders wore armour made from thick layers of animal hide which sometimes had bones sewn in for added stability. It was also believed that weapon inventory was used to base Vikings social standing. First I will talk about the similarities and then I will finish off with the differences, all of which will be based on factual information that I have gathered both, from the book and the mainstream media. Then I will finish by coming to a conclusion to an opinion I have and whether the government systems are more similar or different. The overall conclusion to this statement is that the classes are divided with different opportunities and even though not as much as the government officials in the book, the upper classes still have more freedom to excel and do as they please. The second similarity is that both governments believe that ?War is Peace.? We saw in the book that the government of Oceania believed that the only way to have peace was through war and strength. They would at one time be peaceful with one of the two other two countries in the world, Eurasia or Eastasia, while waging war against the other. The government would also use excuses on why they were waging war. The same is here in The United States. We went to Iraq for reasons that some feel were not justified while others feel differently. The main argument of the opposition was that we went to war with Iraq on the basis that they had weapons of mass destruction and so forth but non were found. The question that I want to ask is: Were we lied to as the people in Oceania were? The third similarity is that both governments have their hands and control in every aspect of society?s life. Also the government spies on their citizens. In the book we saw Oceania had absolute control over people?s life. Even though the control that the United State government has over people?s lives these days is not as great as the one in the book, they still interfere ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Traditional and historical elements such as images and symbols may be taken from their original context to create a new visual culture, resulting in a reinvention of the element s purpose, function, and meaning. Through case studies of Tiananmen Gate, Takashi Murakami s art, and Dongdaemun Design Park and Plaza, it will be demonstrated that aspects of tradition and historyare often used during the creation of modern visual cultureand art in Asia to establish a positive (powerful, innocent, modern etc.) image of the state. Tiananmen Gate was originally a part of a group of gates that served as formal entrance[s] to a number of subcities . Emphasis on gates and walls in dynastic China was a manifestation of the belief that power could be maintained only by keeping it secret . The use of vertical integration by Carnegie was taking business away from other industries who needed citizens and companies to purchase their product. Carnegie became more popular and people started to buy his steel over others which had a negative effect on society as a whole while only improving his earnings and taking from other industries. Along with using vertical integration negatively, Carnegie was a robber baron. A robber baron is a business owner who tends to use ruthful tactics to gain more wealth. Carnegie Steel and many other business enterprises had people working for them in harsh conditions that were unsafe and unsanitary. Along with getting low pay, the workers were also forced to work 7 days a week for unbelievable hours. Carnegie s factories were unsanitary, poorly ventilated and the employees were underpaid and overworked in unsafe environments. Overall, Carnegie abused his power of wealth to overrule his employees and used vertical integration to take from other industries, but without doing so he would not be as successful as he was. • 51. Examples Of Sympathy For The Monster In Frankenstein Owen E. Ashley Instructor Toni J. Weeden Honors Senior English 16 November 2017 Sympathy for the Monster I feel sympathetic for the creature on many occasions in the fiction novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Frankenstein has brought something to life that he cannot even look at without being horrified. I believe it was wrong that Frankenstein played God and created something he didn t understand. Once you are finished with this essay I believe you will agree with me. In chapter 15 there are many times the reader feels sympathy for the monster. As I read, however, I applied much personally to my own feelings and condition, I found myself similar yet at the same time strangely unlike to the beings concerning whom I read and to whose conversation I was a listener. I sympathized with and partly understood them, but I was unformed in mind; I was dependent on none and related to none. The path of my departure was free, and there was none to lament my annihilation. My person was hideous and my stature gigantic. What did this mean? Who was I? What was I? Whence did I come? What was my destination? These questions continually recurred, but I was unable to solve them. (Shelley 109) Although this quote is quite long, it embodies many of the sympathies readers have with the creature. The creature has many questions that cannot be answered because Victor abandoned him after being created. The creature learns through reading books ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 52. Mark Twain s Cone-Pone Opinions According to Webster Dictionary, conformity is defined as, in compliance of rules, laws, or standards. Mark Twain s, Cone pone Opinions, demonstrates how society reacts to new conformities; individuals eventually conform to popular ideas and inevitably abandon these ideas for something greater. Twain states, It is our nature to conform; it is force which not many can successfully resist. (Twain 2). The reason people conform is not for self approval, but rather, for the approval of others. In his essay, Twain discusses the flaring hoopskirt and how individuals were appalled at first. Six months later, everyone admires hoopskirts and no one laughs anymore. However, the hoopskirt has disappeared in the same way. One woman who abandoned this fashion influenced others to abandon it as well. This demonstrates that society establishes habits, fashions, and trends only to please others and will abandon those same habits, fashions, and trends to again please others. Therefore, the... The purpose of James s essay is to demonstrate that mankind cannot achieve a perfect, warless society until there is a moral equivalent of war such as a substitute for war s disciplinary function. The duties, penalties, and sanctions pictured in the utopias they paint are all too weak and tame to touch the military minded. (James 51). Furthermore, James adds that peace cannot be sought unless we maintain some military discipline. ...I do not believe that peace either ought to be or will be permanent on this globe, unless the states pacifically organized preserve some of the old elements of army discipline. A permanently successful peace economy cannot be a simple pleasure economy. (53). Thus, humans need an equal balance of peace and war to attain a faultless ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Science Fiction And Cultural Values Science Fiction and Cultural Values Introduction Science fiction is a genre of creative writing which has stories that are connected with the future of technology and science. This style of writing is often seen in graphic novels, fiction novels, television series, and in film. Some common portrayals of science fiction include time and space travel. At times, these stories feature life that is found on other planets apart from Earth. The tales are usually based on new technologies, different social systems and scientific discoveries. Science fiction may seem to be a fantasy because the technologies involved sometimes look unrealistic. However, that fantasy becomes a reality when it changes how people view their daily lives. History of science fiction Philosophical stories and texts from centuries ago have some imagery that relates back to science fiction. The stories imply that, even then, they predicted advances in science in future years to come. Religious poems and stories that talk about the creation or demolition of the universe have some elements that are like the elements of Science fiction. The powers used by science fiction can be associated with those of the gods during and before biblical times. An example of an old philosophical text which can be associated with science fiction is Plato s The Republic . The topics and adventures discussed in the text are viewed as a fantasy and do not seem practical in real life because they cannot be experienced using normal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Florence Nightingale Contributions To Nursing Florence Nightingale is best known for her contributions to nursing, but she is also recognized for her contributions to data analysis and graphical representation of data. She was born in Florence, Italy and died in Mayfair, London, United Kingdom. Her lifespan was May 12, 1820 to August 13, 1910. She was born into a well off merchant family and had one older sibling. Despite her mother s upwardly social tendencies Florence herself, was more awkward socially. During her lifetime there were a number of wars and revolutions across Europe. Additionally, women were not seen as the equal to men and did not have the right to vote. Nightingale was unique in her social class as instead of focusing on keeping house and getting married, she instead pursued education and progressed in the field of nursing. When Nightingale was in her teens she was interested in mathematics and it was also clear that nursing was her calling (Biography.com Editors, 2017). In 1840, Nightingale begged her parents to let her study mathematics instead of more feminine pursuits such as sewing and dance lessons. Her initial preference was to study mathematics, even though ladies of her social standing did not formally pursue that field of study, so ultimately her parents allowed her to study mathematics with tutors. Nightingale passed her learning onto other children through tutoring. One of the tenets she followed was that of Socrates to ask questions of what she and her students were learning ...
