The Buckthorn
The Buckthorn (Rhamnus catharica), a shrub found in parts of the United States and Canada, is known
for being a non native invasive species. In this study, research was done to explain how the Buckthorn
manipulates the soil in order to dominate the woodland ecosystems it is found in. The study was
carried out in a 10 acre woodland area in the Skokie Preserve of Lake Forest, Illinois. Newly fallen
leaves were collected from dominant trees in the area: Hill s Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis), Wild Cherry
(Prunus serotine), Cottonwood (Populus deltoids) and the Buckthorn. Three grams of air dried leaves
of each species were placed into litterbags that allowed access to microarthropods. Another litterbag
had a combination of all the leaves matching

Negative Impacts Of Landfills
Impacts of Landfills Impacts on the environment Landfills dumping can disrupt natural processes on
land and in the water. Dumping can interfere with proper drainage of runoff. Areas are more
susceptible to flooding when waste blocks 6 ravines, creeks, culverts, and drainage basins. In rural
areas, burning at dump sites can cause forest fires and severe erosion as fires burn away trees and
undergrowth. The run off from improper disposal of toxic substances such as motor oil or household
cleansers can contaminate lakes, streams, and drinking water supplies. Dumping also has a negative
impact on plants and wildlife. Many birds and small animals die after ingesting or becoming entangled
in debris. Fish and other aquatic species are killed when decomposing litter and food wastes in streams
deplete oxygen supplies in the water. Refuse in a stream can also clog fish spawning areas. Dumped
appliances are not only an eyesore, but can also release toxic chemicals. Refrigerators and freezers
may release chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) into the air, harming the earth s protective ozone layer.
Improperly discarded appliances built before 1979 may also leak polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
into the soil. According to the EPA, PCBs can cause cancer, reproductive failure and hormone
imbalances in animals and humans, (Environmental Protection Agency, 2008). Impacts on human
Health. Landfills are very dangerous to kids and all other human beings. Other physical hazards to

The House Of The Scorpion Summary
In the story,The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt. The
main setting of the story is Opium, poppy fields that are between United States and the old Mexico. In
the beginning of the story there is a boy named Matt and he lives in the poppy fields with a woman
named Celia and he has never met anybody besides her. The main conflict in the book is that Matt is a
clone and clones are looked down at and treated very poorly works but Matt is different. The solution
is that Matt is El Patron s,the ruler of Opium, clone so people don t treat Matt as bad as other clones
are treated. Also he doesn t have the injection that destroy a clone s brain. At the end of the story Matt
returns to Opium after a long journey in Aztlan and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Celia really cares about Matt when she only focuses on freeing him from the prison. In the book, The
House of the Scorpion , it states, You reminded me that the most important thing is to get Matt free.
(48). To Celia, getting Matt out of the prison was her priority and it didn t matter the cost. This shows
that Celia has a really strong motherlike connection with Matt even though Celia isn t his mother.
Celia is a very courageous character. In the book, The House of the Scorpion , it claims, He accepted
what God gave him and when God told him it was time to go,he did it. Matt was amazed by her
courage. (234). Celia has a lot of courage to stand up to El Patron, a very powerful leader who haves
people turned into eejits who question him. Celia is probably one of the bravest characters in the book.
Celia is very clever. In the book, The House Of the Scorpion , it emphasizes , I poisoned Matt with
foxglove from my garden. I made Matt s heart to unstable to transplant. (235). Celia also is very smart
for learning about poisonous plants. Celia is also probably one of the smartest characters in the

Is Ponyride A Creative Incubator, Provides Socially Minded...
Ponyride
Ponyride is a creative incubator that provides socially minded startups and artists with an affordable
space. The 30,000 square foot warehouse was purchased for only $100,000, this and community
support has allowed for space to be rented at as low as $0.20 $0.25 per square foot. The low entry
barriers means creative can focus on their talents not the bills.
In return, each tenant shares their craft with the local community for 63 hours per month. The intent is
to promote collaboration, build capacity and skills in the wider community, cultivate ideas and
catalyse positive change.
One of the tenants is the Empowerment Plan, a non profit manufacturer who builds jackets that
convert into sleeping bags for the homeless. What started out as a class assignment for the Detroit
based College for Creative Studies has become a full time job making 6,500 coats a year. She realised
that the jacket was only a Band Aid for a larger systemic problem of homelessness. So she began
employing single parents who have been homeless, providing them with a skill, a job and self
empowerment.
Detroit SOUP
What started as a small group of individuals trying to improve their community using their combined
social capital became potluck style monthly microgranting dinner supporting community projects in
Detroit. SOUP showcases four projects that support Detroit based projects, attendees make a
suggested donation of $5, they listen, connect and vote on the project they believe is most worthy.

That which Is Accepted as Knowledge Todays Is Sometimes...
Human beings are much of a strange creature many are attracted by what the majority of the
population accepts as knowledge and follow this path for many years without asking themselves the
reason why it is said to be that way. Others prefer completing their own knowledge by referring to an
entity which is thought to be superior to all the living on Earth. Then there are those which are open
minded, which stand out from the crowd, whose own curiosity takes the lead into finding out the
secrets of the world. What the question is implying, is the fact that sometimes a statement is said to be
a
fact, a principle or the truth, entering our own classification of knowledge . On the other hand, this
could also be discarded ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was simply because they based
their idea on their present evidence; it was not just a matter of how it looks , as the Earth looks
chaotically bumpy, with hills, cliffs, mountains and much more. It was another way of looking at the
Earth which raised the idea of it being flat. This was by looking at the curvature of the planet s
surface over a considerable length; how much does the Earth deviate (on average) from perfect
flatness.
The flat Earth theory would make it seem that the surface doesn t deviate from flatness at all, that its
curvature is 0 per mile. The actual curvature of the Earth is on average 0.000126 per mile (being it not
perfectly spherical), a quantity very close to 0 per mile, and certainly not easily measured by the
equipment used by the ancients. The very small difference accounts for the fact to why it took so long
to pass from the flat Earth to the round Earth. It is also however essential not to discard this scientific
evidence as the Earth could not be mapped over large areas without extreme accuracy, and long
voyages can t be undertaken with any reasonable way of locating one s own position unless the Earth
is
considered round rather than flat. Hence, although the flat Earth theory is only slightly wrong in small
dimensions, it is enough to be discarded in favour of the round Earth theory.
As previously stated, not all theories have an absolute right or wrong , however, is there such an

How Is Glass Used In The Glass Menagerie
Glass is an everyday object that serves a different purpose in each particular person s life. Its uses
range from decorations to something as common as a household mirror. Others use glass to see more
than just themselves; they use it to see the world. Additionally in the play, glass itself is an everyday
object with a deeper meaning; the glass animals themselves are symbols of the uniqueness of
individual people and Laura relies on them (like one would glasses) to cope with the world around her.
Spectacles take something nonsensical, and turn it into a clear picture; much like how spectacles in the
play, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, clarifies the theme of realism. The first way a
spectacle is used to create realism is with dim lighting. The use of lighting makes scenes more
dramatic and can sometimes make it seem more real. Tom is the narrator as well as a character in the
play and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lighting is one special effect that creates a form of reality. In the play lighting is used to convey the
emotions of the characters so it can be easy to tell their mood. Just the same in real life, bright colors
can show happiness and even improve our moods. Music is another spectacle Tennessee Williams
uses. A lot of people can relate to music in their life and it can often be an escape from our troubles as
it was for Laura. Props, a final spectacle, provide symbolism as well as another way for the characters
to escape the reality the cannot face in their lives. Along with being a prop, glass is an object that
people use in different ways. Some cannot get through the day without looking at themselves in a
sheet of it, and others cannot see without it. Even insignificant objects that some people take for
granted, others rely on solely to be able to absorb the world around

How To Manipulate Cognitive Dissonance
If one is trying to pull a thought or feeling in closer, or push it away, they may be attempting to
manipulate their cognitive dissonance. If one knows that they are not happy with their actions, they
can dilute that feeling of cognitive dissonance by decreasing the negative or enhancing the positive
attitudes about it (Smith Mackie, n.d.). One might be a smoker for instance, and know that smoking is
bad for them, but continue smoking anyway. A perception of a clash of unsuitable elements is a way to
describe the way one feels when their actions and beliefs are at odds (McLeod, 2014). So, if one is
unhappy about the things they do because they do not match what they think they should do, they will
be said to be experiencing cognitive dissonance.

Luminous Soul Method Essay
Luminous Soul Method
Prana Series: Where is Your Energy?
By Manorama
You are beautiful. You are powerful. You are free. You are a Luminous Soul.
~ Manorama
Once when I was working with a private student at my office in NYC I noticed that she was talking
non stop and her eyes were darting here and there. Her energy was wild. What I mean by wild is that
she engaged her energy in an unaware way. In an effort to help her begin to gain awareness of her
relationship with her energy, so that she could gain greater stability within, I posed the question,
Margaret, do you know where your energy is? She looked at me, then around the room, above and
behind her and finally turned to me saying, Uh well ... No I don t. I smiled at the honest and sincere
way in which she engaged the question. I believe you, I told her. Margaret really didn t know where
her energy was. The thing Margaret didn t know is that her energy is her.
Maybe as you read this you are thinking, Well, I don t know where my energy is either. Through the
Luminous Soul Method, I show students that it is their job to know where their prana, their energy, is.
To develop a close relationship with energy is important because energy is your soul, energy is you.

The Reflection Of The Myth Of IcarusFoundations
During the pre assessment, the students were given the myth of Icarus and his wings. We were
assessing the students ability to perform three important reading comprehension and literacy skills.
These included identifying the main idea of a text, making connections from the text to their own
personal lives and experiences, and finally, to draw inferences from the text. We collaborated with our
cooperating teacher, Ms. Aviles, in order to design lessons that addressed the students needs and were
relevant to their classroom work. We chose myths as a literary medium to coordinate with their next
unit, which was Ancient Greece, and to expose them to a style of writing that many had no prior
experience reading. From our pre assessment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The need to implement these scaffolds was concluded through the responses students turned in during
the pre assessment. For example, one student wrote, to have a meaning to the name of the island of
Icaria...It is also to learn the name of the island Icaria. It was very clear this student was unfamiliar
and didn t understand the main idea of the text and that the general plotline was confused. Another
student wrote, I think this myth was made to tell the origin of people with wings. Both of these student
responses indicate that those students had difficulty pulling out the main idea of the text because they
give details that are irrelevant or gives misinformation.
We also tailored instruction based on objective 3 which asks how the myth relates to the students lives.
According to the data we gathered, this was the objective with the highest average scores on the pre
assessment. Since we wanted to make the content culturally relevant and use the students background
knowledge, we wanted to take the end of class during the lessons to do a quick share out of the
questions, specifically, the one that dealt with objective 3. This is so that the whole class had the
opportunity to hear the other students connections and to critically think about their own experiences.
For example, in the pre assessment, one student wrote, It can be related to my life because, like Icarus,
I didn t heed to instructions. People also ruin my plans like Icarus did to Daedalus. This

Gettysburg A Turning Point Dbq Analysis
It is 1863 and people are wondering who will win the war? The war had gone on for two years and the
Confederates were marching towards Pennsylvania. Lincoln reacted by making George Meade a
General and sending Union soldiers to Gettysburg to take all the high ground. This lead to the battle of
Gettysburg the bloodiest battle in the civil war. The Battle of Gettysburg lead to the downfall of the
Confederacy because the confederacy lost many soldiers, Gettysburg was the last battle in the North,
and Robert E. Lee was losing hope.
The Confederacy lost many soldiers at Gettysburg. After the battle the Confederates lost 30% to 34%
of their army while the north lost 27%. (Doc B) Robert E. Lee also tells us in a letter to Jefferson
Davis that they have lost a large amount of important Generals General Barksdale is killed Generals
Garnett and Armistead are missing.... Generals Pender and Trimble are wounded in the leg, General
Hood in the arm, and General Heth slightly in the head. (Doc C) This evidence helps prove that
Gettysburg was a turning point because it shows that the Confederacy suffered more casualties than
the North. Many of those casualties were very valuable to their army because an army cant function
very well without Generals.

Hand Hygiene In Health Care
Hand hygiene is the simplest way, but the most important way to control infection (Di Muzio,
Cammilletti, Petrelli, Di Simone, 2015). This simple activity can protect patients and healthcare
workers (HCW) from infection. Healthcare workers including nursing staffs in the hospital keep
washing their hands with soap and water or with sanitizer when they are in and out of patient s room.
Even though all healthcare workers acknowledge the importance of hand hygiene in patient care, the
hospital acquired infections are still growing and cause multi drug resistant pathogen infection as well
(World Health Organization, 2009). Guideline of hand hygiene in health care, provided by the World
Health Organization (WHO) addressed a healthcare associated infection (HACI) is the global problem

As discussed above, self awareness of proper hand hygiene by the health care workers and
patients/caregivers and promoting good hand hygiene for discharge patient/ caregiver can be a good

Eva Stachniak s The Chosen Maiden
It is hard enough to make yourself as a dancer, it is even harder to become one in the amidst of the
war. The Chosen Maiden, by Eva Stachniak, tells the story of Bronia Nijinsky s life as a professional
dancer from a child to a grown woman. The majority of the novel takes place during World War One
and follows Bronia as she must learn to support her family and survive the war. Stachniak takes
Bronia s real life experiences and turns them into a wonderful work of fiction, blending fact with
fiction effectively. To begin, the author creates compelling family dynamics. To add on, the characters
in the novel are very interesting and develop throughout. Furthermore, the author fills the book with
many flashbacks and foreshadowing. To conclude, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This book is unique because it is a detailed biography about the events in Bronia s life. The readers
learn that Bronia and her brother Valsav are very different from others in the dance industry because
they are trying to change the face of ballet by modernizing it; Modern ballet should break boundaries,
chart new paths, achieve the unity of music and movements. Modern ballet should be a feast for the
eyes (Stachniak 99). Bronia has quite an interesting life outside of her professional career. It is
interesting to see how she starts as a dancer and the things she must overcome throughout her life. For
instance, once Bronia marries Sasha, another dancer, they have two kids, Irina and Levushka; and she
must learn on how her career choices will affect her entire family. Throughout the novel Bronia
becomes more courageous especially once she has to deal with several of Sasha s affairs. She
eventually leaves him after one of his mistresses becomes pregnant; this is quite like the situation her
parents were in at the beginning of the novel. To conclude, The Chosen Maiden is a good book
because the characters are unique and the readers observe their entire

Human Perceptions In Che Guevara s The Time Machine
The process of discovery can inform an individual s perspectives by allowing confrontation with the
inadequacies of the human condition. Che Guevara s memoir The Motorcycle Diaries (TMD),
published in 1995, reveals the transformative influence of an odyssey across Latin America, where
confronting discoveries of social injustice violently reshape Che s perspectives. H.G. Wells novella
The Time Machine (TTM), published in 1895, explores how the Time Traveller s optimistic
speculations about the future of humanity are overturned by the discovery of futuristic societies that
personify the failure of evolution. In both texts, feelings of curiosity and necessity motivate
discoveries of a social nature, which elicit feelings of empathy in Che and the Time Traveller, and
develop their understandings of humanity.
An innate sense of curiosity about unknown societies and necessity towards fulfilling their ambitions
instigates Che and the Time Traveller s journey of discovery. In TMD the high modal statement we
sealed our pact never to give up until we realised our dream reveals Che Guevara s resilient
determination to journey around Latin America in order to grow more conscious of his aspirations and
purpose. The interplay between the real and the imagined in this statement introduces the idea that
discoveries often begin as idealistic perceptions of one s place in the world. In Che s meeting with a
woman suffering from severe asthma on Valparaiso, he recounts It is at times like

Satire In Mark Twain s The Damned Human Race
Mark Twain s logical fallacies wash over his readers like depression in the mind. They creep in like a
soft voice heard just by the ears at first, but soon they take over the entire limbic system. Attacking the
amygdala in a verbal hijacking, rendering the host unable to feel conversely. Satire is by definition
Mark Twain s View of the man in The Damned Human Race. It s his use of ridicule to expose and
criticize people s stupidity or vices and follies to scorn (Merriam Webster.com). Mark Twain s
approach to prove his hypothesis that; man is at the bottom of evolution, is enticing but not successful.
The purpose of the reading for Mark Twain was to show: That the human race is of one distinct
species. That other animals also more or less distinct and that they are in the procession. They are
links in the chain which stretches down from the higher animals to man at the bottom (Twain). He
eases his readers into his claims strategically by presenting his facts and findings. He frantically
unravels as he depicts his findings to show the believed evidence as he attempts to stake his claim.
He vexes in an attempt to persuade the reader from the beginning with his experiment of the anaconda
and the English Earl . Showing how the hunters killed many buffalo for theater of the Earl and only
consumed part of one leaving the rest of the buffalo to rot (Twain). While the anaconda on the other
hand was presented with multiple calves and only killed one in entirely, leaving the rest unharmed or
bothered (Twain). Here Twain uses logos as proof to support his claim with his experiments and
findings. He also uses pathos to enrage his reader in the sheer waste that the human man can produce
but as everyone knows not all men are created equal.
In one of his examples he speaks of a two cages (Twain). One filled with assorted animals the other
with different men from different religions and locations (Twain). He hopes to prove how animals
very quickly learned the most basic survival technique to cohabitate where the man did not. He lacks
logos, as the man is an intellectual species and has evolved, surpassing other animals. The animals do
not wear clothes, nor do they choose how they present themselves and what

Theseus And The Labyrinth In Greek Theatre
The myth of Theseus and the Labyrinth can be transformed into an Athenian tragedy because there is
not an abundance of characters, there is a unity of action, and a unity of time. To adapt this myth of
Theseus into an Athenian tragedy, a few changes would have to be made. One drastic change that I
would implement is something completely new to the Athenian theatre; I would use the audience as
part of the play. Constructing and displaying a labyrinth on the stage would be incredibly difficult to
pull off therefore I would have the audience seated in a labyrinth type structure in addition to having a
small section that leads to the back of the stage as this is where the minotaur would be. In addition to
using the audience as a labyrinth, the composition of the chorus would contribute to the importance of
Theseus task of killing the minotaur. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The chorus would be composed of the seven men and women sent into the labyrinth every year to feed
the minotaur. Choosing the sacrificed people to serve as the chorus further intensifies the importance
for Theseus to kill the minotaur because if he fails, the cycle will continue and countless people will
have to be sacrificed to feed the beast. In Agamemnon by Aeschylus, the chorus consists of old men
whom are citizens of Argos (Aeschylus Agamemnon 1. 40 43). The chorus in Agamemnon serves as a
wise voice to the audience whereas the chorus of this play would be slightly sinister and foreboding,
however, it would still serve the purpose of explaining to the audience the importance of the task at

With all of that new water rushing to the Mississippi river the river went and rose to unprecedented

April 16. With the remaining leeves to go and burst in the following weeks to come. This flood came
to be known by many different names. The two most common names are the Great Flood of 1927 and
the Mississippi River Flood of 1927. ( Mississippi River flood of 1927) The flood waters that came

This flood did not stop there though, it went and displaced hundred of thousands of people from their

The Political Theology Of The Spanish State
conversion to the political theology of the Spanish State. We argued that the articulation of forced
conversion as a paramount goal of the State s ontological aspirations relies upon a misunderstanding
apropos of the alleged divine performativity of the Law. We then moved to The Turn and analysed the
literary sublimation that Cervantes operates in Don Quixote I II apropos of the aforementioned
political reality. In particular, we focused on the way Cervantes s ingenium relies upon the trope of
conversion (literary sense) and on how its deployment helped Cervantes circumvent the inquisitorial
censorship while suspending the reader s belief in the State s ontological tendency (and by extension,
in forced conversion as the crowning policy of that ambition). As part of this task, we analyzed a
multiplicity of semantic (featuring a symbolism linked to the countryside, the military, the economic,
the religious, the political, the professional fields, to name but a few) and non semantic displacements
(related to the materiality of language as such) across forms (novel and theatre, but also poetry) and
genres (epic, comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, realistic fiction, romance and satire)iv. After The Pledge
and The Turn it is now time for us to ask ourselves the following question: for all this string of ecstatic
conversions, wherein, though, resides The Prestige of Cervantes as instantiated in Don Quixote Parts I
II?

The most prevalent and easily identifiable technique is his use of symbolism. Like previously
mentioned, the novel is series of short stories; each referencing a certain thing each soldier of the
Alpha Company humps . Also, the soldiers are referred to as legs or grunts , which symbolizes their
role in the war. The role, according to O Brien, to march for the sake of the march (O Brien).
According to an interview by Jack Smith, Tim O Brien states that My hope was that by imposing
certain technical requirements on myself, I would end up as a consequence with an interesting,
compelling, and fresh way of telling a story (Smith). His use of symbolism does in fact give a
refreshing take on storytelling and is a vital role in relating the reader to the story. Without symbolism
the story would be a very different, less interesting one. In the story titled The Man I Killed O Brien
reflects on the events leading to and following his killing of a Vietnamese soldier via a grenade. He
goes on to tell the reactions of his platoon mates as well as his own. The explosion of the grenade left
the Vietnamese soldier s face burned and unrecognizable. This symbolizes the life of so many of the
thousands of dead Vietnamese soldiers that too were killed and consequently buried. These dead
soldiers went unidentified and failed to bring their respective families closure. O Brien struggles to

Similarities Between Willy Loman And Oedipus
Professor Mary Lounsbury
Composition II

Drama Essay Plays can be compared despite being composed in different historical times, tragedy
plays started progressing from traditional to modern by focusing on self discovery and less on tragic
mystery and destiny. Today, we will be comparing two tragic plays: Oedipus The King was a Greek
tragedy by Sophocles was written in 429 BC, whereas The Death of a Salesman was written in 1949
by Arthur Miller. The two plays compare and differ in ways even though they were written at different
times. Ancient Greek Drama honored the history of Athens, and as Athens was in a protected war with
Sparta also honored the power of the gods and goddesses who might be prevailed upon for protection.

Prologue is the introduction of the play. Parados: is the chorus first song, offering an interpretation of
the conflict learned in the Prologue. Episodia: is a series of scenes usually debates between characters,
in which the action and events of the play are presented. Stasimon: is the Chorus s interpretation and
response to the proceeding act. Exodos is the conclusion scene, including the final lines of the chorus.

Violance in Schools Causes Deviant Behavior
Violence among our youth has spread widely throughout the nation. This can be linked to several
problems in our society, but mainly one. The constant barrage of television and media violence causes
deviant behavior in children. When children are young they are very impressionable by the things
around them. Often kids are influenced by what they see. If kids are watching shows or being
introduced to violent acts they too will tend to act out this violence (Huesmann and Eron, 1986). The
results of studies on the effects of televised violence are consistent. By watching aggression, children
learn how to be aggressive in new ways and they also draw conclusions about whether being
aggressive to others will bring them rewards (Huesmann and ... Show more content on

Today the data linking violence in the media to violence in society is superior to that linking cancer
and tobacco. The American Psychological Association (APA), the American Medical Association
(AMA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Surgeon General, and the Attorney General
have all concluded there is a problem with media and T.V. violence.
Violence has become more and more prevalent in today s society. We see it in the streets, back alleys,
schools, and even at home. Homes, in particular, are a major source of violence. A television set has
become common to the living room of most family homes. This outlet for violence often goes
unnoticed. Children who view television are often pulled into the realistic, yet a devastating world of
violence. Much research has gone into showing why children are so mesmerized by this big glowing
box and the action that takes place within it. Research shows that it is definitely a major source of
violent behavior in children (Howe 55). The research proves time and time again that aggression and
television viewing do go hand in hand. The truth about television violence and children has been
shown.
Some are trying to fight this problem. There are numerous advocate groups lobbing for television and
media sensor ship. The National Cable Association is one industry groups studying the trends violent

man named Ramón Sampedro, who is a bedridden quadriplegic who petitioned to the federal court
requesting that he be allowed to end his own life and die with dignity. Ramón spent twenty eight years
fighting the courts to grant him permission to die with dignity. Ramón became a quadriplegic after

The Measuring Of Flow Volume Loops Essay
Introduction: The measuring of flow volume loops (FVL) in laboratory settings during exercise are
becoming increasingly popular to identify the limiting mechanics of ventilation (Johnson, Beck,
Zeballos Weisman, 1999a). The collection of a maximum flow volume loop (MFVL) through a forced
maximal maneuver at rest allows researchers to compare a baseline value with tidal loops obtained
during exercise (Johnson et al., 1999a). Dominelli and Sheel state that MFVL provides information on
an individual s capability to produce volume and flow with respect to their mechanical ceilings
(2012). Placing the respective tidal loops associated with different exercise intensities within a resting
MFVL shows the difference in volumes during exercise and rest. An MFLV maneuver would yield the
largest loop; whereas, the resting tidal loop would be the smallest (Johnson, Weisman, Zeballos Beck,
1999b). Additionally, tidal loops during exercise will fit somewhere between resting and maximal tidal
loops; increasing in volume as intensity increases; however, the loops still remain small in comparison
to the MFVL (Johnson et al. 1999b). This aforementioned trend observed in healthy individuals during
increasingly intense exercise is related to the lack of constraints on ventilation (Johnson et al. 1999b).
Major factors responsible for limiting ventilation at rest and during exercise are bronchodilation and
bronchoconstriction; these in turn affect total lung capacity (TLC) a key measure with

Introduction and History
Laser Doppler flowmetry, or LDF, is a unique way to measure the microcirculatory blood flow
without a painful or invasive procedure. LDF uses the Doppler shift theory as a way to transmit the
information, with the scattering of light coming from the laser by way of the red blood cells. [A, B, C]
Micro vascular applications have greatly benefited from this type of technology. The accuracy and
reproducibility can be shown after years of extensive research. It can continuously monitor the blood
flow and between every two to five seconds give an average output value. [E]
The blood cell velocity in capillaries is too low to use the technique of the Doppler shift using
ultrasound, as the frequencies of the sound that would reverberate back would be too small to identify.
[B] Using the laser, calculations based upon the measurements between the primary light source s
frequencies that were transferred towards the vasculature and the reflective light coming back towards
the source can determine the blood flow s velocity. [B] This non destructive way to assess
microcirculatory function has been around for approximately 40 years now in its realised state. The
proposed device became experimentally plausible in 1972 when Riva used LDF for measuring retina
vessels in rabbits. [D] Around 1980 another

Globalization Through The Eyes Of Soccer
Globalization through the Eyes of Soccer
One indisputable aspect of modernity is that as time has progressed, the world has become more and
more connected in all imaginable ways. This aspect of modern society is termed globalization, and it
has a large impact on how the world operates. Observing and understanding the development and
integration of soccer in various societies proffers insight as to how the sport has aided in the
increasing globalization of the world within the past century. These effects of globalization can first be
seen in the international efforts around the world of soccer. Globalization can be divided into political,
cultural and economic interactions. Examples of both the political and the cultural impacts of soccer
can be found in France and its recent history, whereas a consequence of economic globalization and its
ties to soccer can best be seen in Asia.
The history of soccer at the international level connects heavily with the idea of globalization.
Globalization, in essence, is the interaction, collaboration, and sometimes even conflict, between
people of different nations; soccer embodies this idea heavily. For instance, in 1904, seven European
nations founded the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), creating the foundation
for the behemoth of an organization that it is today (McMahon 11/8/2016). The idea behind the
association was to have a governmental body that could control and dictate international matches, as

The Impact Of Technology On The Workforce
The advancement of technology has impacted many areas of life, especially the workforce. Advances
in technology, such as the development of the robot, have started to have a significant impact on the
individual worker. These workers come from many different areas of life, some including
manufacturing, service, and jobs that do not require much education. For example, manufacturing jobs
have been impacted by the robot because the robot is able to perform manufacturing skills at an easier
and faster rate than humans. Jobs that also do not require extensive education will be impacted
because robots will be able to replace these humans since it does not take a lot of expertise to fulfill
these particular jobs. The interaction with robots is also an area addressed in the paper.
Communication with other humans will be affected because people will be dealing with robots more
at your local stores or your local movie theaters. Humans will be associated more with technology and
less with human interaction. In addition to these ideas, the future of workers is addressed in this paper.
Even though there will be a loss of jobs and a declining economy because of the increase in robots
may at first not seem beneficial, it will all work out in the end. The loss of jobs will create more jobs
since robots will be doing their jobs at a faster rate, creating more of a demand for other jobs to
perform their jobs faster. Humans will have to be recruited for these jobs to keep up with the demand

An Explication of Sharon Olds’ Poem, Feared Drowned Essay
An Explication of Sharon Olds Poem Feared Drowned.
Fear is an amazing emotion, in that it has both psychological as well as physiological effects on the
human body. In instances of extreme fear, the mind is able to function in a way that is detached and
connected to the event simultaneously. In Feared Drowned, Sharon Olds presents, in six brief stanzas,
this type of instance. Her sparse use of language, rich with metaphors, similes and dark imagery,
belies the horror experienced by the speaker. She closes the poem with a philosophical statement
about life and the after effects that these moments of horror can have on our lives and relationships.
The setting of the poem is a day at the ocean with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the poem, Olds use consonance sounds, particularly s w and z sounds, to recreate the
sounds of the surf, and perhaps even the sound of gasping for air. In this respect, even the very sound
of this poem reinforces its central idea of drowning.
In the third stanza, the speaker scans the swimmers emerging from the water, realizing that none of
them is her husband. The lack of emotion in her tone suggests that the speaker is experiencing that
state of simultaneous detachment and connection that often occurs in moments of intense panic. The
sense of foreboding is reinforced in the fourth stanza: Rocks stick out near the shore like heads / Kelp
snakes in like a shed black suit... One wonders if the shed black suit is meant to be a symbol for
typical funereal attire, perhaps the black suit the speaker fears she will bury her husband in. It is not
until the fifth stanza that the speaker s body belies her fear and shock with a natural physiological
response: My stomach begins to contract as if to / vomit salt water.
As her husband emerges from the surf in the last stanza, the tone of the poem switches from one of
darkness and fear, to one that is philosophical: Once you lose someone

Techniques
Currently, there are four prenatal diagnosis techniques used. The first, and safest method, is an
ultrasound. It is noninvasive and can assess and evaluate gestational age, fetal position, growth,
development, and any structural birth defects. When performed by highly skilled operators,
abnormalities can be detected with as high as 90% accuracy (IOM 1994).
The next technique routinely performed for prenatal diagnosis is amniocentesis. A long needle is
inserted into the mother s uterus to withdraw a sample of amniotic fluid containing cells shed by the
fetus. The cells are cultured and analyzed for chromosome abnormalities. Despite the lengthy time in
obtaining results because the cells need to be cultured, this method has become widely accepted as a
safe and accurate way to determine genetic disorders.
Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is yet another technique that can be performed very early on in
gestation between 9 and 12 weeks. A

Argumentative Essay On Organic Food
Organic Foods
The topic of being healthy is currently trending in our world right now. Everyone wants to follow the
idea and live some form of a healthy lifestyle. Along being healthy, there is the demand of eating
healthy; which is not always easy. There are so many types of food to consider, that it is almost
overwhelming to search for healthy options. These options can range from yogurt to granola or even
the type of carrots we choose, especially when there are different forms of farming methods for our
vegetables. These methods of farming include conventional farming or organic farming. The
difference? Simple, one requires the use of harmful fertilizers and pesticides; the other does not.
Therefore, when it comes to deciding on the right vegetables for your health, organically grown food
is your best option, here s why.
First of all, the counter argument needs to be addressed. Many argue that there is not a significant

Prevention And The Prevention Of Cancer
In an attempt to keep anyone from wasting their time reading an article that does not apply to them we
need to clearly define the subject of this article. If you are comfortable with waiting for a miracle drug
to cure cancer, expecting that early detection through any number of exams at your physicians office
followed by chemotherapy in an attempt to kill the now detectable cancer cells, then this article is not
for you. If however, you would prefer to avoid cancer totally by preventing it before it starts, then

When addressing nutrition and the prevention of cancer one of the hottest topics in this arena at this
time are antioxidants. The primary reason that antioxidants have received increasing attention is based
on the very nature of cancer cells themselves, how they are started and more importantly how they can
be eliminated before becoming detectable. For most forms of cancer, they get their start when your
cell s DNA becomes damage in some form. Keep in mind that your body is generating new cells on a
daily basis and that these new cells are being created based on the blue print of how they should be
constructed. That blue print is your DNA. When your DNA has become damaged or during the
creation process of these new cells they come in contact with free radicals they are damaged.

only the direction of his life, but also the effect everyone involved. As the novel progresses further,
you begin to realize that Dunstable is essentially a spectator who explains accounts of other
characters, eventually leading to his own discovery of his place in the hierarchy of life. From his
innocent experiences as a child, to his enlistment in the Canadian military to fight in WW1, to his
various ventures to Europe and South America to gain knowledge about saints and magicians,
Dunstable is constantly an observer of others lives as well as his

Catch-22, by Joseph Heller
Catch 22 is a story about the different personalities that can be involved in a war. Out of all the
different archetypes, the three I ve chosen are John Yossarian, Albert Tappman, and Milo
Minderbinder, although, not in that order. The first character being analyzed is Yossarian, the
unwilling hero of this book. Although the book labels Yossarian as the main character, he constantly
tries to coward out of going to battle. The second character that will be described is Milo
Minderbinder, the archetypical business person of Catch 22.He runs the camp mess hall and controls
what everyone in the camp is buying, selling, and eating. Milo is constantly trying to control or
manipulate the economies around him, and after he gets a large commission ... Show more content on

It was like seditious and insidious too, and like socialist, suspicious, fascist and Communist. It was an
odious, alien, distasteful name, a name that just did not inspire confidence. It was not at all like such
clean, crisp, honest, American names such as Catchcart, Peckem and Dreedle. (Heller 210)
The quote above describes the relationship with Colonel Cathcart, in which Cathcart has a worrying
doubt about Yossarian and his role in the squadron. Yossarian complains to Doc Daneeka about
Colonel Cathcart s dictum regarding the mission count during every visit to the medical tent. Cathcart
s opinion about Yossarian also dawns upon the other men who start to wonder about the man with that
name and who he actually is. One of the main points within the story is when the soldiers question
Yossarian during the death of Lt. Mudd, whom the men continuously call the dead man in Yossarian s
tent (Heller 166). A character that changes Yossarian completely about war is Snowden. After
Snowden s death, Yossarian is given a medal of honor for fighting through that battle, but unlike the
other men, Yossarian shows up in a disorderly fashion. He realizes that he doesn t want to be in a war
like atmosphere anymore and starts to long for his trips throughout Italy. It is after these trips that
Yossarian tries to weasel his way out of the squadron by feigning sicknesses and pleading for Doc
Daneeka to claim him insane. Just because you re paranoid doesn t mean they aren t

Essay On Falsettos
Falsettos, written by William Finn and James Lapine. The time period is present in late 1970 s 1981.
Under the Dramaturgical Statement, it said Falsettos was first produced as two separate one act
musicals, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. It opened before the first report of the HIV/AIDS
outbreak was published. The play remembrance to LGBT movements and all men in America that
were afflicted by HIV/AIDS. Director, David Charles Goyette from Truman State University brought
Falsettos to Severns Theatre because the songs in the musical framed his life with his partner PJ who
passed two years ago. He sings them to remember him and wants all of us to know that LGBT s are

Before the performance begun, there was a couch positioned on the center of the stage. Behind the
couch, a rectangular entrance was opened revealing a hallway where the actors entered. Falsettos, had
changeable scenes that constantly used the rectangular entrance. It easily drawn the audiences
attention when the actor entered because the lighting drenched the entrance, cueing the actors to enter.
The vacant couch placed before the performance began could be distorted into chairs, short end tables,
and a love seat. One scene I remembered that distorted the couch apart into an assortment of furniture
was Marvin s visit at the psychologist s office. Before the scene was cued, the couch was distorted
into a love seat, and a chair. These props conveniently made it a less hassle changing furniture pieces.
Also, the back wall had photo images of framed pictures and books that were projected to make the set
livable. Although, the set itself helped me envision what the 80 s and late 70 s may had looked like by
style, the sounds that I heard in the performance revealed the conflict Marvin was having to find true
love. One sound that was plot driven in the performance was when he smacked Trina. He smacked her
because he was angry towards her for flirting with Mendel, Marvin s psychologist. He thought she
deserved a smack for disobedience in the family, but ironically Marvin

There Is The Main Cause Of Ocean Pollution
Believe it or not, pollution may have been older than you have thought. Archeologists have discovered
settlements dated from between forty and ten thousand years old. Another discovery of pollution that
dates back to the old times is the lead pollution from the Roman Smelters. This type of pollution was
found all over Europe leading the Archeologists to believe that they have dumped a vast amount of it
into rivers. Although pollution had little effect at the time, the magnitude of pollution started to
increase when humans went from nomadic colonies to settled ones. One of the biggest spikes in
pollution occurred in the 1900 s due to the World Wars. The toxic manufactured materials, such as
plastic, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plastic debris and other forms of waste are commonly gathered into big groups known as gyres. There
are 5 known gyres that are currently in the ocean caused by ocean currents. The Great Pacific Garbage
Patch is one of the five gyres that is nearly twice the size of Texas. Waste from the North Pacific
Ocean, including the coastal waters of North America and Japan, are joined together.
Relation to Tolerance Most people do not realize how marine animals have to tolerate with the ocean
pollution. Their main focus is on how to get rid of pollution and do not put in account for the
organisms that have to deal with it. We get food from the ocean, to be more exact nearly 200 billion
pounds of fish and shellfish, we pull natural resources from it, such as salt, oil and metals, it provides
transportation, and provides a great amount of oxygen. The ocean provides so many resources for us,
being one of Earth s most valuable resources,we should take better care of it.

Theme Of Family Dysfunction In King Lear
Family Dysfunctions in King Lear
No two snowflakes are alike. Similarly, every family s relationship is unique. William Shakespeare s,
King Lear, focuses on the similarities between the two families involved in the plot and subplot. The
plot consists of King Lear, who is fooled into believing that his eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan,
love him; however, he soon realizes the opposite as Goneril and Regan betray him in hopes of gaining
power. Fortunately, Cordelia truly loves her father and stays loyal to him, despite Lear s public
rejection of her. The subplot consists of Gloucester and his two sons Edgar and Edmund. Edgar is
Gloucester s natural son, and Edmund is Gloucester s illegitimate son a bastard. Edmund yearns for
the inheritance Edgar will receive from Gloucester, so he incriminates Edgar by forging a letter stating
that Edgar wants to kill his father. In William Shakespeare s, King Lear, the subplot of Gloucester and
his sons parallels the plot of King Lear and his daughters in that children betray their fathers, the
siblings betray each other, but there are loyal children who contrast the betrayal.
Noticeably, in both the plot and the subplot, the fathers are betrayed by their own blood, emphasizing
the injustice experienced by Lear and Gloucester. In the main plot, Goneril and Regan scheme against
Lear in order to avoid the obligation of caring for him in his old age. When Lear visits Goneril in her
castle, she discloses to Oswald her scheme of getting Lear

Lenin s Role In The 1917 Revolution
History Coursework Plan Section I Introduction Introduce Lenin and aims of the essay such as giving
a balanced view of Lenin s Legacy. Try to keep it short. Section II Lenin s Role in the 1917
Revolution Points for Lenin The April Thesis The April Thesis was a monumental step in Lenin s step
to revolution. The speech outlined the failures of the provisional Government. This helped gained the
sympathy of the general public of Russia and boosted support for the Bolsheviks. The April thesis laid
much of the ideological groundwork of the Bolsheviks when they had gained power. The April Thesis
had united key factions in the Provisional Government such as the Workers and Soldiers. Without the
April Theses, it is possible that the Russian Revolution would not happen and Russia s power would
still be kept under the hands of the Russian Oligarchs. This makes Lenin significant to the 1917
revolution. (Refer to counterpoint) All Power to the Soviets Lenin united his strongest supporters by
uniting the masses against the provisional government. Lenin understood that he could orchestrate a
new uprising in much the same way that the previous one had happened, by initiating large street
demonstrations. This was an extremely significant step to revolution as without these demonstrations,
he would not be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This made the provisional government itself extremely unpopular. They were unable to meet the
demands of the Workers, Peasants and Soldiers demands as they were too selfish and was unwilling to
work against their own Self interest in the best interests of the country. This made them extremely
weak and anyone could have united the people against the provisional government. Examples of
failures include lack of distribution of food, land and not bringing peace. Points will be further
developed in

Holden s Attitude to Loss
The Catcher In The Rye Holden s Attitude To Loss And Goodbyes The theme of loss and goodbyes
recurs throughout The Catcher in the Rye and each occurrence reinforces Holden s negative attitude
towards change. The most vivid quote to gain insight into Holden s view on change and subsequently
loss (Byrne, Kalua and Scheepers 2012: 64) is in chapter 16 when Holden reflects back on his
childhood and his regular school visits to the Natural History Museum, Holden finds a great comfort
in the static and unchanging displays in the museum and in the continuity he finds in there, The best
thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody d move.
(SparkNote...2007). The first example of a departure we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This difficulty to accept the migration of the ducks is most likely due to Holden s inability to adapt to
and accept change and loss. We see this again in Chapter 16 Holden says after he reminisces about his
school trips to the Natural History Museum Certain things they should stay the way they are. You
ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. (Salinger
1994:110) To understand Holden s natural affinity towards constancy and familiarity we need to look
at his reaction and praise of the kettle drummer in the Radio City pre show before the movie, we can
see that Holden admires the drummer for his precision and enthusiasm but mostly as he recognises
him as a constant in the Radio City orchestra since he was a child and Holden has memories attached
to watching his performance I ve watched that guy since I was about eight years old. My brother Allie
and I, if we were with our parents and all, we used to move our seats and go way down so we could
watch him. He s the best drummer I ever saw. (Salinger 1994: 124) SOURCES CONSULTED Byrne,

In this study, research was done to explain how the Buckthorn manipulates the soil in order to dominate the woodland ecosystems it is found in. The study was carried out in a 10 acre woodland area in the Skokie Preserve of Lake Forest, Illinois. Newly fallen leaves were collected from dominant trees in the area: Hill s Oak (Quercus ellipsoidalis), Wild Cherry (Prunus serotine), Cottonwood (Populus deltoids) and the Buckthorn. • 5. Negative Impacts Of Landfills Impacts of Landfills Impacts on the environment Landfills dumping can disrupt natural processes on land and in the water. Dumping can interfere with proper drainage of runoff. Areas are more susceptible to flooding when waste blocks 6 ravines, creeks, culverts, and drainage basins. In rural areas, burning at dump sites can cause forest fires and severe erosion as fires burn away trees and undergrowth. The run off from improper disposal of toxic substances such as motor oil or household cleansers can contaminate lakes, streams, and drinking water supplies. Dumping also has a negative impact on plants and wildlife. Many birds and small animals die after ingesting or becoming entangled in debris. Fish and other aquatic species are killed when decomposing litter and food wastes in streams deplete oxygen supplies in the water. Refuse in a stream can also clog fish spawning areas. Dumped appliances are not only an eyesore, but can also release toxic chemicals. Refrigerators and freezers may release chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) into the air, harming the earth s protective ozone layer. Improperly discarded appliances built before 1979 may also leak polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the soil. According to the EPA, PCBs can cause cancer, reproductive failure and hormone imbalances in animals and humans, (Environmental Protection Agency, 2008). Impacts on human Health. • 8. That which Is Accepted as Knowledge Todays Is Sometimes... Human beings are much of a strange creature many are attracted by what the majority of the population accepts as knowledge and follow this path for many years without asking themselves the reason why it is said to be that way. Others prefer completing their own knowledge by referring to an entity which is thought to be superior to all the living on Earth. Then there are those which are open minded, which stand out from the crowd, whose own curiosity takes the lead into finding out the secrets of the world. What the question is implying, is the fact that sometimes a statement is said to be a fact, a principle or the truth, entering our own classification of knowledge . It was another way of looking at the Earth which raised the idea of it being flat. This was by looking at the curvature of the planet s surface over a considerable length; how much does the Earth deviate (on average) from perfect flatness. The flat Earth theory would make it seem that the surface doesn t deviate from flatness at all, that its curvature is 0 per mile. The actual curvature of the Earth is on average 0.000126 per mile (being it not perfectly spherical), a quantity very close to 0 per mile, and certainly not easily measured by the equipment used by the ancients. The very small difference accounts for the fact to why it took so long to pass from the flat Earth to the round Earth. • 10. How Is Glass Used In The Glass Menagerie Glass is an everyday object that serves a different purpose in each particular person s life. Its uses range from decorations to something as common as a household mirror. Others use glass to see more than just themselves; they use it to see the world. Additionally in the play, glass itself is an everyday object with a deeper meaning; the glass animals themselves are symbols of the uniqueness of individual people and Laura relies on them (like one would glasses) to cope with the world around her. Spectacles take something nonsensical, and turn it into a clear picture; much like how spectacles in the play, The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, clarifies the theme of realism. Along with being a prop, glass is an object that people use in different ways. Some cannot get through the day without looking at themselves in a sheet of it, and others cannot see without it. If one knows that they are not happy with their actions, they can dilute that feeling of cognitive dissonance by decreasing the negative or enhancing the positive attitudes about it (Smith Mackie, n.d.). One might be a smoker for instance, and know that smoking is bad for them, but continue smoking anyway. A perception of a clash of unsuitable elements is a way to describe the way one feels when their actions and beliefs are at odds (McLeod, 2014). You are a Luminous Soul. ~ Manorama Once when I was working with a private student at my office in NYC I noticed that she was talking non stop and her eyes were darting here and there. Her energy was wild. What I mean by wild is that she engaged her energy in an unaware way. In an effort to help her begin to gain awareness of her relationship with her energy, so that she could gain greater stability within, I posed the question, Margaret, do you know where your energy is? She looked at me, then around the room, above and behind her and finally turned to me saying, Uh well ... No I don t. I smiled at the honest and sincere way in which she engaged the question. I believe you, I told her. Margaret really didn t know where her energy was. The thing Margaret didn t know is that her energy is her. Maybe as you read this you are thinking, Well, I don t know where my energy is either. Through the Luminous Soul Method, I show students that it is their job to know where their prana, their energy, is. To develop a close relationship with energy is important because energy is your soul, energy is you. Knowing About Versus Living In We live within the idea that the body and mind are who we are. We were assessing the students ability to perform three important reading comprehension and literacy skills. We collaborated with our cooperating teacher, Ms. Aviles, in order to design lessons that addressed the students needs and were relevant to their classroom work. We chose myths as a literary medium to coordinate with their next unit, which was Ancient Greece, and to expose them to a style of writing that many had no prior experience reading. It was very clear this student was unfamiliar and didn t understand the main idea of the text and that the general plotline was confused. Another student wrote, I think this myth was made to tell the origin of people with wings. Both of these student responses indicate that those students had difficulty pulling out the main idea of the text because they give details that are irrelevant or gives misinformation. We also tailored instruction based on objective 3 which asks how the myth relates to the students lives. According to the data we gathered, this was the objective with the highest average scores on the pre assessment. Since we wanted to make the content culturally relevant and use the students background knowledge, we wanted to take the end of class during the lessons to do a quick share out of the questions, specifically, the one that dealt with objective 3. This is so that the whole class had the opportunity to hear the other students connections and to critically think about their own experiences. Che Guevara s memoir The Motorcycle Diaries (TMD), published in 1995, reveals the transformative influence of an odyssey across Latin America, where confronting discoveries of social injustice violently reshape Che s perspectives. H.G. Wells novella The Time Machine (TTM), published in 1895, explores how the Time Traveller s optimistic speculations about the future of humanity are overturned by the discovery of futuristic societies that personify the failure of evolution. In both texts, feelings of curiosity and necessity motivate discoveries of a social nature, which elicit feelings of empathy in Che and the Time Traveller, and develop their understandings of humanity. An innate sense of curiosity about unknown societies and necessity towards fulfilling their ambitions instigates Che and the Time Traveller s journey of discovery. In TMD the high modal statement we sealed our pact never to give up until we realised our dream reveals Che Guevara s resilient determination to journey around Latin America in order to grow more conscious of his aspirations and purpose. • 19. Satire In Mark Twain s The Damned Human Race Mark Twain s logical fallacies wash over his readers like depression in the mind. They creep in like a soft voice heard just by the ears at first, but soon they take over the entire limbic system. Attacking the amygdala in a verbal hijacking, rendering the host unable to feel conversely. Satire is by definition Mark Twain s View of the man in The Damned Human Race. It s his use of ridicule to expose and criticize people s stupidity or vices and follies to scorn (Merriam Webster.com). Mark Twain s approach to prove his hypothesis that; man is at the bottom of evolution, is enticing but not successful. The purpose of the reading for Mark Twain was to show: That the human race is of one distinct species. That other animals also more or less distinct and that they are in the procession. They are links in the chain which stretches down from the higher animals to man at the bottom (Twain). He eases his readers into his claims strategically by presenting his facts and findings. He frantically unravels as he depicts his findings to show the believed evidence as he attempts to stake his claim. He vexes in an attempt to persuade the reader from the beginning with his experiment of the anaconda and the English Earl . Showing how the hunters killed many buffalo for theater of the Earl and only consumed part of one leaving the rest of the buffalo to rot (Twain). While the anaconda on the other hand was presented with multiple calves and only killed one in entirely, leaving the rest unharmed or bothered (Twain). Here Twain uses logos as proof to support his claim with his experiments and findings. He also uses pathos to enrage his reader in the sheer waste that the human man can produce but as everyone knows not all men are created equal. In one of his examples he speaks of a two cages (Twain). One filled with assorted animals the other with different men from different religions and locations (Twain). He hopes to prove how animals very quickly learned the most basic survival technique to cohabitate where the man did not. He lacks logos, as the man is an intellectual species and has evolved, surpassing other animals. The animals do not wear clothes, nor do they choose how they present themselves and what ... Theseus And The Labyrinth In Greek Theatre The myth of Theseus and the Labyrinth can be transformed into an Athenian tragedy because there is not an abundance of characters, there is a unity of action, and a unity of time. To adapt this myth of Theseus into an Athenian tragedy, a few changes would have to be made. One drastic change that I would implement is something completely new to the Athenian theatre; I would use the audience as part of the play. Constructing and displaying a labyrinth on the stage would be incredibly difficult to pull off therefore I would have the audience seated in a labyrinth type structure in addition to having a small section that leads to the back of the stage as this is where the minotaur would be. • 22. The Political Theology Of The Spanish State conversion to the political theology of the Spanish State. We argued that the articulation of forced conversion as a paramount goal of the State s ontological aspirations relies upon a misunderstanding apropos of the alleged divine performativity of the Law. We then moved to The Turn and analysed the literary sublimation that Cervantes operates in Don Quixote I II apropos of the aforementioned political reality. In particular, we focused on the way Cervantes s ingenium relies upon the trope of conversion (literary sense) and on how its deployment helped Cervantes circumvent the inquisitorial censorship while suspending the reader s belief in the State s ontological tendency (and by extension, in forced conversion as the crowning policy of that ambition). As part of this task, we analyzed a multiplicity of semantic (featuring a symbolism linked to the countryside, the military, the economic, the religious, the political, the professional fields, to name but a few) and non semantic displacements (related to the materiality of language as such) across forms (novel and theatre, but also poetry) and genres (epic, comedy, tragedy, tragicomedy, realistic fiction, romance and satire)iv. After The Pledge and The Turn it is now time for us to ask ourselves the following question: for all this string of ecstatic conversions, wherein, though, resides The Prestige of Cervantes as instantiated in Don Quixote Parts I II? According to an interview by Jack Smith, Tim O Brien states that My hope was that by imposing certain technical requirements on myself, I would end up as a consequence with an interesting, compelling, and fresh way of telling a story (Smith). His use of symbolism does in fact give a refreshing take on storytelling and is a vital role in relating the reader to the story. Without symbolism the story would be a very different, less interesting one. In the story titled The Man I Killed O Brien reflects on the events leading to and following his killing of a Vietnamese soldier via a grenade. He goes on to tell the reactions of his platoon mates as well as his own. The explosion of the grenade left the Vietnamese soldier s face burned and unrecognizable. The constant barrage of television and media violence causes deviant behavior in children. When children are young they are very impressionable by the things around them. • 29. The Measuring Of Flow Volume Loops Essay Introduction: The measuring of flow volume loops (FVL) in laboratory settings during exercise are becoming increasingly popular to identify the limiting mechanics of ventilation (Johnson, Beck, Zeballos Weisman, 1999a). The collection of a maximum flow volume loop (MFVL) through a forced maximal maneuver at rest allows researchers to compare a baseline value with tidal loops obtained during exercise (Johnson et al., 1999a). Dominelli and Sheel state that MFVL provides information on an individual s capability to produce volume and flow with respect to their mechanical ceilings (2012). Placing the respective tidal loops associated with different exercise intensities within a resting MFVL shows the difference in volumes during exercise and rest. An MFLV maneuver would yield the largest loop; whereas, the resting tidal loop would be the smallest (Johnson, Weisman, Zeballos Beck, 1999b). Additionally, tidal loops during exercise will fit somewhere between resting and maximal tidal loops; increasing in volume as intensity increases; however, the loops still remain small in comparison to the MFVL (Johnson et al. 1999b). This aforementioned trend observed in healthy individuals during increasingly intense exercise is related to the lack of constraints on ventilation (Johnson et al. 1999b). Major factors responsible for limiting ventilation at rest and during exercise are bronchodilation and bronchoconstriction; these in turn affect total lung capacity (TLC) a key measure with ... The Principles Of Laser Doppler Flowmetry 2 Table of Contents Introduction and History 1 The Principles Of Laser Doppler Flowmetry 2 Clinical Applications 4 Recent Developments 4 Glossary 5 Works Cited 6 Introduction and History Laser Doppler flowmetry, or LDF, is a unique way to measure the microcirculatory blood flow without a painful or invasive procedure. LDF uses the Doppler shift theory as a way to transmit the information, with the scattering of light coming from the laser by way of the red blood cells. [A, B, C] Micro vascular applications have greatly benefited from this type of technology. The accuracy and reproducibility can be shown after years of extensive research. It can continuously monitor the blood flow and between every two to five seconds give an average output value. [E] The blood cell velocity in capillaries is too low to use the technique of the Doppler shift using ultrasound, as the frequencies of the sound that would reverberate back would be too small to identify. [B] Using the laser, calculations based upon the measurements between the primary light source s frequencies that were transferred towards the vasculature and the reflective light coming back towards the source can determine the blood flow s velocity. [B] This non destructive way to assess microcirculatory function has been around for approximately 40 years now in its realised state. The proposed device became experimentally plausible in 1972 when Riva used LDF for measuring retina vessels in rabbits. [D] Around 1980 another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Globalization Through The Eyes Of Soccer Globalization through the Eyes of Soccer One indisputable aspect of modernity is that as time has progressed, the world has become more and more connected in all imaginable ways. This aspect of modern society is termed globalization, and it has a large impact on how the world operates. Observing and understanding the development and integration of soccer in various societies proffers insight as to how the sport has aided in the increasing globalization of the world within the past century. These effects of globalization can first be seen in the international efforts around the world of soccer. Globalization can be divided into political, cultural and economic interactions. Examples of both the political and the cultural impacts of soccer can be found in France and its recent history, whereas a consequence of economic globalization and its ties to soccer can best be seen in Asia. The history of soccer at the international level connects heavily with the idea of globalization. Globalization, in essence, is the interaction, collaboration, and sometimes even conflict, between people of different nations; soccer embodies this idea heavily. For instance, in 1904, seven European nations founded the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), creating the foundation for the behemoth of an organization that it is today (McMahon 11/8/2016). If you are comfortable with waiting for a miracle drug to cure cancer, expecting that early detection through any number of exams at your physicians office followed by chemotherapy in an attempt to kill the now detectable cancer cells, then this article is not for you. If however, you would prefer to avoid cancer totally by preventing it before it starts, then please read on. When addressing nutrition and the prevention of cancer one of the hottest topics in this arena at this time are antioxidants. The primary reason that antioxidants have received increasing attention is based on the very nature of cancer cells themselves, how they are started and more importantly how they can be eliminated before becoming detectable. For most forms of cancer, they get their start when your cell s DNA becomes damage in some form. Keep in mind that your body is generating new cells on a daily basis and that these new cells are being created based on the blue print of how they should be constructed. That blue print is your DNA. When your DNA has become damaged or during the creation process of these new cells they come in contact with free radicals they are damaged. Unchecked that damage begins going through an uncontrolled growth and at some point this once damaged cells has now become a tumor. While there is a lot of talk about ... • 41. Hip Flexor Activity During mid stance the peak height of the hip is seen to be higher on the prosthetic limb than in a non amputee. This is a result of the reduced flexion of the prosthetic knee. Also the characteristic of the prosthetic foot influences the peak height too. After contralateral foot contact an abrupt transition from hip extension to flexion is seen. In the late stance, an eccentric hip flexor activity is seen as compared to normal. This inturn generates higher hip flexor moment. This greater moment further decelerates the extending hip and ensures that the HAT segment does not lag behind as the amputee pulls themselves over the prosthesis. noindent Coming to swing now, it is seen that during early swing the hip flexors act concentrically ... • 42. Dunstable s Life In Fifth Business By Robertson Davies Do you ever wonder why your life has taken the course it has? Was the path you chose sparked by a particular moment from your youth? Or was it different incidents that have occurred throughout your life? These are a few of the questions I am left with after reading the novel Fifth Business written by Canadian author Robertson Davies. Originally published by Macmillan Canada in 1970, this book is approximately 273 pages in length and takes about a week to complete. The novel focuses on the story of the life of Dunstable Ramsay, a small town boy from Deptford, Ontario who evolves from a child into an intellectual man looking for a meaning to his life. Dunstable speculates on the past experiences of his life through a letter after retiring as a history teacher and is why this novel falls under the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his account, The involvement which he mentions is in reference to when his friend, Percy Staunton, threw a snowball at him which accidentally hits Mrs. Dempster in the head and causes her to fall. To make matters worse, Mrs. Dempster is pregnant at the time and this incident causes her to enter labour early in which she eventually gives birth to a premature son. Even from the beginning of the novel, Dunstable is concerned about how this one seemingly minor event can have drastic impacts on not only the direction of his life, but also the effect everyone involved. As the novel progresses further, you begin to realize that Dunstable is essentially a spectator who explains accounts of other characters, eventually leading to his own discovery of his place in the hierarchy of life. From his innocent experiences as a child, to his enlistment in the Canadian military to fight in WW1, to his various ventures to Europe and South America to gain knowledge about saints and magicians, Dunstable is constantly an observer of others lives as well as his ... • 43. Catch-22, by Joseph Heller Catch 22 is a story about the different personalities that can be involved in a war. Out of all the different archetypes, the three I ve chosen are John Yossarian, Albert Tappman, and Milo Minderbinder, although, not in that order. The first character being analyzed is Yossarian, the unwilling hero of this book. Although the book labels Yossarian as the main character, he constantly tries to coward out of going to battle. The second character that will be described is Milo Minderbinder, the archetypical business person of Catch 22.He runs the camp mess hall and controls what everyone in the camp is buying, selling, and eating. Milo is constantly trying to control or manipulate the economies around him, and after he gets a large commission ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was like seditious and insidious too, and like socialist, suspicious, fascist and Communist. It was an odious, alien, distasteful name, a name that just did not inspire confidence. It was not at all like such clean, crisp, honest, American names such as Catchcart, Peckem and Dreedle. (Heller 210) The quote above describes the relationship with Colonel Cathcart, in which Cathcart has a worrying doubt about Yossarian and his role in the squadron. Yossarian complains to Doc Daneeka about Colonel Cathcart s dictum regarding the mission count during every visit to the medical tent. Cathcart s opinion about Yossarian also dawns upon the other men who start to wonder about the man with that name and who he actually is. One of the main points within the story is when the soldiers question Yossarian during the death of Lt. Mudd, whom the men continuously call the dead man in Yossarian s tent (Heller 166). A character that changes Yossarian completely about war is Snowden. After Snowden s death, Yossarian is given a medal of honor for fighting through that battle, but unlike the other men, Yossarian shows up in a disorderly fashion. He realizes that he doesn t want to be in a war like atmosphere anymore and starts to long for his trips throughout Italy. It is after these trips that Yossarian tries to weasel his way out of the squadron by feigning sicknesses and pleading for Doc Daneeka to claim him insane. Before the performance begun, there was a couch positioned on the center of the stage. Behind the couch, a rectangular entrance was opened revealing a hallway where the actors entered. Falsettos, had changeable scenes that constantly used the rectangular entrance. It easily drawn the audiences attention when the actor entered because the lighting drenched the entrance, cueing the actors to enter. The vacant couch placed before the performance began could be distorted into chairs, short end tables, and a love seat. One scene I remembered that distorted the couch apart into an assortment of furniture was Marvin s visit at the psychologist s office. Before the scene was cued, the couch was distorted into a love seat, and a chair. These props conveniently made it a less hassle changing furniture pieces. Also, the back wall had photo images of framed pictures and books that were projected to make the set livable. Although, the set itself helped me envision what the 80 s and late 70 s may had looked like by style, the sounds that I heard in the performance revealed the conflict Marvin was having to find true love. One sound that was plot driven in the performance was when he smacked Trina. He smacked her because he was angry towards her for flirting with Mendel, Marvin s psychologist. He thought she deserved a smack for disobedience in the family, but ironically Marvin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. There Is The Main Cause Of Ocean Pollution Believe it or not, pollution may have been older than you have thought. Archeologists have discovered settlements dated from between forty and ten thousand years old. Another discovery of pollution that dates back to the old times is the lead pollution from the Roman Smelters. This type of pollution was found all over Europe leading the Archeologists to believe that they have dumped a vast amount of it into rivers. Although pollution had little effect at the time, the magnitude of pollution started to increase when humans went from nomadic colonies to settled ones. One of the biggest spikes in pollution occurred in the 1900 s due to the World Wars. The toxic manufactured materials, such as plastic, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other ... We get food from the ocean, to be more exact nearly 200 billion pounds of fish and shellfish, we pull natural resources from it, such as salt, oil and metals, it provides transportation, and provides a great amount of oxygen. • 46. Theme Of Family Dysfunction In King Lear Family Dysfunctions in King Lear No two snowflakes are alike. Similarly, every family s relationship is unique. William Shakespeare s, King Lear, focuses on the similarities between the two families involved in the plot and subplot. The plot consists of King Lear, who is fooled into believing that his eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, love him; however, he soon realizes the opposite as Goneril and Regan betray him in hopes of gaining power. Fortunately, Cordelia truly loves her father and stays loyal to him, despite Lear s public rejection of her. The subplot consists of Gloucester and his two sons Edgar and Edmund. Edgar is Gloucester s natural son, and Edmund is Gloucester s illegitimate son a bastard. Edmund yearns for the inheritance Edgar will receive from Gloucester, so he incriminates Edgar by forging a letter stating that Edgar wants to kill his father. In William Shakespeare s, King Lear, the subplot of Gloucester and his sons parallels the plot of King Lear and his daughters in that children betray their fathers, the siblings betray each other, but there are loyal children who contrast the betrayal. Noticeably, in both the plot and the subplot, the fathers are betrayed by their own blood, emphasizing the injustice experienced by Lear and Gloucester. In the main plot, Goneril and Regan scheme against Lear in order to avoid the obligation of caring for him in his old age. When Lear visits Goneril in her castle, she discloses to Oswald her scheme of getting Lear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Try to keep it short. Section II Lenin s Role in the 1917 Revolution Points for Lenin The April Thesis The April Thesis was a monumental step in Lenin s step to revolution. The speech outlined the failures of the provisional Government. This helped gained the sympathy of the general public of Russia and boosted support for the Bolsheviks. The April thesis laid much of the ideological groundwork of the Bolsheviks when they had gained power. The April Thesis had united key factions in the Provisional Government such as the Workers and Soldiers. Without the April Theses, it is possible that the Russian Revolution would not happen and Russia s power would still be kept under the hands of the Russian Oligarchs. This makes Lenin significant to the 1917 revolution. (Refer to counterpoint) All Power to the Soviets Lenin united his strongest supporters by uniting the masses against the provisional government. Holden s Attitude to Loss The Catcher In The Rye Holden s Attitude To Loss And Goodbyes The theme of loss and goodbyes recurs throughout The Catcher in the Rye and each occurrence reinforces Holden s negative attitude towards change. The most vivid quote to gain insight into Holden s view on change and subsequently loss (Byrne, Kalua and Scheepers 2012: 64) is in chapter 16 when Holden reflects back on his childhood and his regular school visits to the Natural History Museum, Holden finds a great comfort in the static and unchanging displays in the museum and in the continuity he finds in there, The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. This difficulty to accept the migration of the ducks is most likely due to Holden s inability to adapt to and accept change and loss. We see this again in Chapter 16 Holden says after he reminisces about his school trips to the Natural History Museum Certain things they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone. (Salinger 1994:110) To understand Holden s natural affinity towards constancy and familiarity we need to look at his reaction and praise of the kettle drummer in the Radio City pre show before the movie, we can see that Holden admires the drummer for his precision and enthusiasm but mostly as he recognises him as a constant in the Radio City orchestra since he was a child and Holden has memories attached to watching his performance I ve watched that guy since I was about eight years old.
