In the United States, people like to believe everyone has an equal chance at success. This emphasis on
self effort perpetuates the belief that people control their own social standing. However, sociologists
recognize that social stratification is a society wide system that makes inequalities apparent (Griffiths
et al., 2016, p.188). There are many factors that drive social inequality; globalization and immigration,
technology advances, the family you were born into, and even the education you received in pre
school. I feel the most important contributing factor is economic inequality. I consider this to be true
not only for the United States, but globally as well.
Both wealthy and poor classes, and all those in between would benefit from living in a more
economically equitable society. Statistics show correlation of an increase in overall physical health
and longevity, a decrease in infant mortality rates, and an increase in mental health in individuals
living in societies with higher economic equality. There is also substantial evidence linking greater
equality to better social relationships within societies there is less violence, and a greater sense of
overall trust.
I believe addressing education, implementing new tax policies, and making fundamental changes to

the bureaucratic ranks of the military. Each of its character s represent something special and they are
either aggressors or victims of the aggressors. The aggressors in the novel are the ones who bully or
manipulate selfishly and heartless. They have zero compassion for human life and answer only to
those with the money and the power. The victims are the ones that are the target of such bullying and
manipulation by the aggressors. The aggressors in the novel are Milo Minderbinder, ex P.F.C.
Wintergreen, Colonel Cathcart, General Dreedle, and Captain Black. The victims in Catch 22 are
Yossarian, Doc Daneeka, Nately, the Chaplain, and Major Major. Milo Minderbinder, the first
aggressor, is satire for modern business and all that is wrong with it. As a mess officer he runs a
lucrative enterprise syndicate and his only real care is profit. He will go to great lengths to make a
profit and he has no allegiance or loyalty to a country, person, or principle unless it pays him. He cares
about no one other than the money and therefore has no real concern for anyone else. Even though he
says that everyone has a share in the profits of the syndicate, this is not really true, he just says it to
make more money for himself with their help.

The Sun Also Rises is a deceiving novel. Opening with absolutely riveting scenes such as characters
drinking in a café, characters drinking in a speakeasy, and characters drinking in hotel rooms, the
reader can easily confuse the novel for reality television in print form. But what lies under these
scenes are actually calls of help resonating from the characters. The reason for this desperation is that

For the purposes of this research chapter I shall be exploring youth works response to the issue of
alcohol consumption among young people today. According to the Youth Work Act 2001;
Youth work means a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and
enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation,
and which is
(a) Complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education and training; and
(b) Provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations.
Youth workers achieve this by creating circumstances which enable young people to feel comfortable
with themselves, make and sustain personal relationships, reach their potential and find their place in
society. Due to the nature of their work, youth workers form close relationships with the young people
they engage with. These relationships are central to the youth work process. It is essentially a
partnership, which allows the young people space to express themselves and provides an opportunity
for learning which they may otherwise ignore. By utilising this relationship youth workers can offer
essential support to the young people during the crucial stages of their development by befriending
them, listening to them and advocating on their behalf. The importance of this relationship does not

The purpose behind Fredrick Douglass s Narrative was to appeal to the other abolitionists who he
wanted to convince that slave owners were wrong for their treatment of other human beings. His goal
was to appeal to the middle class people of that time and persuade them to get on board with the
abolitionist movement. Douglass had a great writing style that was descriptive as well as convincing.
He stayed away from the horrific details of the time, which helped him grasp the attention of the
women who in turn would convince their husbands to help by donating money and eventually ending

This meant that these bastard children were slaves despite their paternal heritage because their mother
was a slave. The effect of this revelation was to shock and offend the morals of the conservative
Northern whites. Northern society scorned people in adulterous and interracial relationships. By
portraying these Southerners as immoral and adulterous, Douglass wanted to cultivate in his audience
a damaging opinion of southern slaveholders (Quarles ix).
Continuing with the theme of family values, Douglass shifts to the basic family unit. Their master
separated Douglass and his mother when he was an infant, for what reason he does not know
(Douglass 2). No one gave Douglass an explanation because this situation was customary on
plantations. Douglass wanted to horrify his Northern white readers by informing them that
slaveholders regularly split slave families for no apparent reason. This obviously would upset
Northerners because the family unit was the foundation for their close knit communities. Multiple
generations and extended families lived together or near each other. It was unimaginable to the readers
that a society existed that took children away from their mothers without reason. Northerners would
think of anyone who was part of such a society as a heartless monster (Quarles ix).
